Pc doesn't want to reset and boot up to safe mode.

Question: Pc doesn't want to reset and boot up to safe mode.

I know I f* up, I've done torrents and nothing has ever gone wrong but now this time something went wrong. I try to download a series and it opens up an external link. I thought I downloaded it but it downloading another program from that it downloaded multiple other programs. I've tried to uninstall all the programs that it installed but some of them don't want to uninstall and now my web browser on my PC is having DNS problems and can't connect to a server. I've tried to reset my PC but every time the PC exit out the reset and when I try to boot up from safe mode I can't use my keyboard. What should I do,I'm so lost and I've regretted ever doing something that stupid.

Preferred Solution: Pc doesn't want to reset and boot up to safe mode.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Pc doesn't want to reset and boot up to safe mode.

Make and model?
What operating system? I assume win 10?
you are probably going to have to boot from a windows disk or a rescue disk to be able to run antivirus and malware removal tools

Hi,
I am using Compaq Pressario P4 PC with ?Windows XP Home edition? Operating System installed on it. The issue that I am facing is as follows:
- One day, audio was not working with PC. My hard disk drive was close to full, so, I thought of uninstalling couple of unnecessary programs. While doing so, I stopped uninstallation in middle by pressing back button, then, uninstallation process hanged. After that I also tried rollback of soundMAX digital audio driver and again I selected back button and this also hanged. Please note that I had inserted the restore CD in upper CD drive to search the audio driver file. Then, I started the computer through hard reset. After that first it went in restore mode, exited that, Windows Logo came and after that there was just a blinking cursor at top left corner and nothing would happen after that.
- Then I called one PC technician for data recovery from my hard drive. He took my hardrive out of the PC and connected it via USB adaptor to my laptop. The hard drive could be detected and we started data copying from hard drive to laptop. However after every 3-4 minutes, hard drive used to hang and then we had to take out the hard drive cable, again reconnect. This we repeated multiple times to recover the important data from my hard drive.
- After that, hard drive was re-inserted in the PC. Since, after restart PC was not booting up (Windows Logo came and after that there was just a blinking cursor at top left corner ... Read more

Answer:PC doesn't boot in normal mode even after OS reinstallation, though, boots in safe mode

Yes, the hard drive may have become faulty and unreliable and therfore will soon fail completely. For confirmation, test it with the drive maker's diagnostic software for DOS.
The links are here: Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools

In Safe Mode, no third-party drivers are loaded. In Normal Mode, all those extra drivers being accessed on an already flakey drive is causing it to crash.

If I could get to a normal boot, I could run the usual suite of anti-malware software. But I can't get there. And when booting, my keyboard is blocked (it works fine mechanically) so I can't change the boot approach or launch Kaspersky.

Attached is the FRST.TXT file. At least I could run that.

What should I do next?

Answer:Can't boot into safe or normal mode, keyboard doesn't function during boot

hi folks,
i just got this PIII machine w/ windows ME. this machine has not been run for quite a while, as per previous owner it has been in the shelf for more than a year, and i booted it up normally and took forever. before the desktop loaded it went to screensaver and can never get out of it. tried booting in safe mode and it seem ok. i tried defrag and no help. i tried system restore (2x) to last year's date and still no help. i did pcdoctor and all test came back ok. please keep your suggestions coming to get this machine working before i do a fresh install. thanks.

ibm (netvista??) 6276 model 34u
celeron 766
64 mb ram

Answer:doesn't boot normally, but safe mode ok

Why can't you get out of the screensaver? Does it ask for a password that you can't provide or what? If it's just a password go into the windows directory & delete *.pwd files . When asked for a password just hit enter.

In the long run best bet would be to reinstall the O/S, otherwise you don't know what else is wrong with it.

Hi, everyone. I'm begging for help here, so frustrated. I apologize in advance for the length of this post.

First some background on what I THOUGHT the problem was.

Last year, we purchased a custom system from a guy I know at work (big mistake), and it was set up with 2 SATA hard drives in RAID. When I went in to add a third drive (IDE) from my old PC, I knocked one of those touchy SATA cables loose, the one to my C: drive, and chaos ensued.

For a few hours, I was stuck in a loop of jiggle the cables, reboot, drive doesn't show. jiggle, reboot, jiggle, reboot, etc etc. Eventually, the guy I bought the PC from suggested I pull the a battery from the mobo and reset before rebooting. Finally, that did the trick, and all was fine since then. (The drives are no longer in RAID, I use them separately now)

I generally leave the PC on, and it will sometimes reboot itself from Windows updates and whatnot. So last night, I get home and the pc is frozen in the middle of a reboot.. it can't find the operating system because the PC is once again not recognizing my 2 SATA drives.

Grrr... so here we go. open it up, jiggle cables, pull the battery.. no success. Then, on a whim, I open up the BIOS when rebooting. Searching for the drives manually in the BIOS is also a no-go... but without changing anything else, I reboot the PC, and there my SATA drives are! Woot!

So, glowing with satisfaction, I watch the system boot. It hangs for a little bit at the windows logo screen with... Read more

I have the dreaded Vundo trojan, which is what got me into this mess in the first place. Hopefully someone can assist with helping me get out of my Catch-22.....

I have Windows XP....

1. Ran MSConfig
2. Under boot.ini tab, I checkmarked SAFEBOOT
3. Rebooted computer
4. PC boots with limited graphics ability, which I expected.
5. I click on my user icon
6. Windows begins to start, but nothing is displayed on the screen with the exception of a few white characters and a couple of labels that say "Safe Mode"
7. The only thing that I can get to happen is if I CTL-ALT-DELETE I get the Task Manager.
8. Because of steps 1 & 2, I'm unable to boot Windows in normal mode

Questions:

1. Is there some way to get Safe Mode to work?
2. How can I undo what I've did in steps 1 & 2 without accessing Windows?

Answer:Safe Mode doesn't work, and now unable to boot in Normal

Hello dfreeze and welcome to BC.If you can get back to Task Manager, go to the Applications tab and click New Task. Type in msconfig.exe and uncheck Safeboot. On the screen where you choose Safe Mode (get there by pressing F8 as you turn the computer on (or restart) until you see the menu) is one of the options Last Known Good Configuration? If so try that.

Hello all,
This morning when I booted up my HP Pavilion, my taskbar, windows button, Cortana, etc wouldn't respond. This has happened periodically since upgrading to Windows 10, but it hast happened for a while. The way I used to fix it was to open the system configuration tool, go to the boot tab, and select safe boot. After rebooting, I would change the option back and reboot again to a working taskbar. Like an idiot, first thing this morning, I didn't do that. I clicked on diagnostic startup under the general tab, not remembering exactly the way I used to do it. This is supposed to load only basic devices and services.

Now when windows boots to the login screen, as soon as I hit something to bring up the user icon, user name, and password, the screen dims and zooms slightly, but nothing comes up. The only icons I get are the lower right hand portion of the screen with network options (turned off), accessibility options, and power options. The screen will brighten and zoom back out after about a minute. This is also a problem I have had periodically, but reboots have fixed it in the past. No dice today.

I have restarted probably twenty times, with and without holding the shift key trying to prompt a screen that would give me access to start the computer in safe mode, which hasn't worked for me. The computer just restarts as normal. I've tried typing the password blind, also a suggestion I saw somewhere, but that didn't do anything. I have also tried hard restarting 3 co... Read more

Try using a Wired USB or PS/2 Mouse.
When you get to the choose a keyboard layout screen, click or press See More Keyboard Layouts. There should be an option to choose the onscreen keyboard. If not, do you have PS/2 Ports on the back of the computer? If so, try using a PS/2 Keyboard.

Is my hard drive dead? Here's what I've already tried:
Chkdsk /r (which did find some bad files)
Startup repair (which did not identify the issue)
Starting in safe mode - result was a partial start with list of drivers, then a blank screen
System restore to earlier date - tells me there is no restore point (?!)
Can't reinstall Vista bc I no longer have the cd
Fortunately, I have Carbonite, so probably haven't lost any important files. Before I head for the Apple store, I thought I'd see if anyone has additional ideas to get this PC to boot?
Thanks in advance, Rachel

It will boot no problem in safe mode which I am using right now.

This morning we had a power outage and when I turned my computer back on, it would not boot. I tried several times to hard boot, with no luck. Then I tried safe mode. Ran an antivirus scan and it showed malware and several infections which it cleaned. The computer still would not boot normally. I then ran chkdsk, still would not boot normally. I have ran malware bytes, registry repair and the registry defrag program as well as done a disk clean up. It still will not boot in normal mode.
Since my last problems that you helped me with, I have upgraded to a broadband internet connection and have a home network. The 2 other computers on the network are fine.
A week ago, I had purchased Avast internet security and had problems immediately. It would not allow me to connect to the internet. That was uninstalled and I went back to the free Avast antivirus, Zone alarm and Spyware blaster. I was very unhappy with Avast customer service and support iYogi and decided I did not want Avast on my computer at all. I have since downloaded PC tools free antivirus. Once I have my computer operational again, I am open to suggestions.

Alright this is a family's laptop that is about 5 or even more years old...has windows xp on it dont know the exact one -.-...alright.

My sister has been using it and says she has never done anything to it...which i dont believe but anyways this computer will not boot up what so ever...everytime you power it on it goes to the screen that says unexpected error software/hardware problem yada yada yada...and then it gives you the options of boot in safe mode, safe mode networking, safe mode command prompt, last known good configuration...and none of those will work...we do have the recovery disks to wipe it but are trying to find a better way if possible...and when you try to load into any of the safe mode choices it stops at multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\Mup.sys...will stay at that for about 5-10 mins and then just turn off...if you try to just do normal mode or last known configuration it just acts like it loads with the windows and the little green loading bar then shuts off...the more i type the more i think the harddrive is toast but im new and learning so i probably could be wrong. Just looking for suggestions =)

Oh and this pc will run very hot...so if its a hardware issue i would not be surprised.

Hi,

I got win 7 home premium 64 bit on an i3 laptop. My system worked fine until today morning.

The problem is this;
When I boot the system in normal mode, I get to the part where I need to enter my password to login. Once i do that, all I get is a black screen with the mouse pointer that moves about normally. I've waited for the normal desktop environment to appear (ie icons and taskbar) but this doesn't happen (btw, my desktop background color is always black).
The system boots perfectly in safe mode.

Yesterday was the first time in over a year I used utorrent. I used to get the BSOD when I used to use it. I couldn't rectify the problem and hence had stopped using it. It worked fine yesterday though.

Any idea whats happening and how I could fix the problem?

I need some help please as I do not know where to start.

I installed a Windows Update a few days ago and then got a BSOD the next time I turned my PC on. So I did a system recovery and this seemed to work.

Now, it's happened again without me doing a Windows Update and I cannot get into safe mode.

I am really sorry but I cannot even follow the BSOD instructions to run a diagnostic tool because I literally cannot get into anything to run the diagnostics.

Can anyone offer me advice?

After upgrading to SP2 about a month ago so I could take finals on my computer at school, i noticed that my computer wouldn't boot up in safe mode (i just get a blank dark screen and i can hear the computer doing something but giving it a reasonable amount of time it doesn't progress from that screen). It didn't concern me because normal mode was working and i was able to take my tests. But now I want to get to the bottom of this. I delayed getting sp2 because i had a feeling it would mess up my computer. (i've had other problems too with visual skins but i was able to resolve those). If it matters, i ran a scan of my system with spyware doctor and it said i had a trojan.dialer and needed to boot in safemode to get rid of it. When I tried, it wouldn't load. Oh, btw, any way to get rid of that trojan.dialer without using safemode?

Lately I have been having problems with my computer.
It turns itself off (it doesn't say "Windows is shutting down..", it just dies.) when I am using it. It turns off after a few hours, sometimes after a few minutes. Then I would have to wait a few minutes until I can turn it on. Because it would not turn on no matter how much you pressed the power button, so the only thing to do was to leave it for a while, and then it world turn on.

But now when you turn on the computer, it turns off seconds after you log in, and then the blue screen of death appears. The next time I tried to turn it on, I got the option to boot in safe mode, and it doesn't turn off. I left it on for a whole day and it didn't turn off.

My computer is a Dell Dimension 5150, running Windows XP Sp2 (I think). I will post more details soon, because the option for running in safe mode does not come up when I turn the computer on. I don't know how to boot up in safe mode because I am a computernoob .
I am typing this on my other computer if you're wondering.
Any help please?
Thanks.

Good Evening,
I could do with some pointers on resolving an issue. I can only boot into windows in safe mode in Windows 10. Normal mode and safe mode with networking doesn't work. The problem occurred after a windows update. I have removed the latest updates that were installed and cleared any pending ones but it still won't boot properly. I have also run the troubleshooter and tried to recovery to an earlier date which also doesn't work.
The laptop is a HP ENVY 17 notebook. At boot it just gets to the HP logo with the circular loading icon and no further and can only boot it into safe mode. Can anyone recommend the next steps? I have also tried the following;

stopping startup itemsuninstalling hardware driversremoving recent softwarerunning troubleshooters at bootsfc scandiagnostic/selective startups with minimal services running
Would the fact that I cant boot into Safe Mode with Networking imply its a network driver related issue?
Bit of a dead end really, any help would be much appreciated
Kind regards
Trevor

Answer:Can't boot into Normal/Safe Mode with Networking, only safe mode...

Hi Trevor and welcome to Tenforums. There are several ways to approach your problem. When I was reading your post, my initial impression was the same as yours, the Network driver was causing your issue. To be safe, go to Control Panel\Programs\Programs and Features uninstall a program and sort the drivers by date installed. See which drivers were installed at the time you began having the problem. If you find any, I think it would be safe to assume the problem would be one of them. If you have another computer, go to the HP website for your model computer and download those drivers to a USB Flash Drive. Do one at a time and install the drivers you just downloaded and reboot until you find the offending driver. I would do this one at a time so you will know which driver it is in case Windows Update decides to install it again. See if that will work for you.

I have a yoga tablet 2 pro. I powered down the tablet one night. In the morning, I normally held down the power button for no more than 2 or 3 seconds to power it up agian until I saw the lenovo logo. Everything was going well, but then it went to an android reboot screen. I never took any action to reboot my tablet, but the screen popped up anyways. I didn't want to reboot my tablet, so I selected the "power off" selection on the reboot screen. It powered off, and then took me back to the reboot screen. I selected the same option once more, but I got the same results. I decided to end the nonsense and just reboot. It wasn't going to hurt anything. When I did, it took me to my home screen where all my apps were gone. I noticed my tablet was then on safe mode. I researched what it was. I'm not sure why safe mode even exists or why it is on my tablet, but I can't get to any of my apps. So I decided to restart my tablet, but after it restarted, I was still on safe mode. I looked up how to take your tablet off safe mode, and all the info I got was to either power off your tablet or restart it and your tablet would be off safe mode. So I restarted it again...still didn't work. I then powered it off again and it took me back to the reboot screen. I have done this multiple times selecting every option on the reboot screen and nothing has seemed to work. I also powered it off and left it over night but that didn't work either. I even tried to power it off, then turn it back on while ... Read more

Windows just downloaded an update to my ASUS x83V laptop and now I can't get it to boot up. I've tried booting in normal mode, last successful mode, safe mode, safe mode with command prompt and nothing works.

If trying to boot in safe mode it gets stuck on crcdisk.sys. When trying to boot in any mode it eventually hits the blue screen with a STOP error of 0x0000001E. I have also gotten 0x0000007E and 0x00000024.

I am positive it's the latest Windows Update that caused this because my computer at work, which also runs on Vista and is also an ASUS, had an update yesterday. When I came into work this morning and tried to start up it was unable to and did a start up repair. That didn't work but it gave me a system restore option which did work.

Unfortunately my ASUS laptop does not prompt me to do a repair nor a system restore. The recovery disk I have that came with the laptop only allows me to do a restore which erases everything on my HD.

I'm only somewhat computer savvy; better at working with them than fixing them so please try to put things in layman's terms. Thank you!

I'm using Windows 10 on my laptop. Few days ago, I found a process in task manager (I forgot the name) which seemed suspicious. So I searched the internet for it and found out that it is a cryptocurrency mining app so I looked for up how to remove it. I downloaded Malwarebytes first it cleared some stuff. Then I downloaded HitmanPro after which all the problem started, I guess. It scanned my pc for a while without showing any result. After a minute it showed some files that were scanned and all of them were Firefox Browser's cache. But at the exact same time Windows Defender started showing virus detected notification. I panicked and stopped the HitmanPro scan and restarted my pc to remove stuff from Malwarebytes scan and this scan. After this restart, everytime I start my laptop, it shows the error "Your PC will automatically restart in one minute". Tried a lot pf fixes from the internet but to no avail. The final option I think I have is to reset my pc. But here's the problem. My laptop is only starting in safe mode due to "Your PC will automatically restart in one minute" error. I can't select the option of 'Keep my files and reset pc' from settings cause it isn't working in safe mode. I started the System recovery by F11 option while starting the pc and there's a reset option too. Please tell me will I get to keep my files if I reset my pc from there?
Also the salesperson already created a Recovery drive on the hard disk itself. I also have the Recovery CD with me.

Ok. This is the furthest I've seen a computer go, and I don't have much hope left.

My brother has a laptop (~4 yrs old). The battery went bad a couple of years ago, and so it now need to be plugged in all of the time. The laptop was asleep when he unplugged it to move it, and when he opened the lid again, it had shut down (very likely because it died). Upon starting it, he got the BSOD and 0xc000021a error code.
The startup repair couldn't fix his problem. Two restore points he had on the system from installing DirectX a few days earlier didn't work. I tried entering safe mode, no luck. Now thinking I was at a last resort, I tried to refresh Windows, keeping his files but removing all the installed programs. I got a message at around 60% telling me Windows encountered a problem and couldn't complete the procedure. Same deal with the full reset. At this point, a reboot greeted me with "No operating system could be found".
I got a large USB and made it into a recovery drive, checking the box that said to include OS files or something (can't remember the exact wording). I tried again using startup repair, then reinstalling windows.

Shockingly, no luck. It failed once again.

A big thankyou in advance!

I detected various trojans etc so ran a registry cleaner but some still remained so i booted into safe mode and ran a deep scan with Dr Web and cured issues but suddenly i got a blue error screen "crql not less or equal",that old chestnut!
My system would not boot into Windows (Xp prof. corporate) and after lots of various attempts decided yo try and "repair" Windows via the installation disk option. So off it went, copying all files etc. but then only got to a certain point and was halted with a message stating Disk 0 at i.d. 0 at bus 0 and something atapi
(sorry,it moved so quick i didnt write it all down but there was not much more than ive mentioned).Again after several attempts with nothing i started taking drastic action and decided to just try a full re-install after formating the drive but again it would not let me.
To cut a long story short,my pc boots up and gets to the initial "Windows Xp" loading bar but then freezes and reboots and does this in and endless cycle! I cant reinstall Cause it wont let me and there seems to be nothing in the Bios menu that can help???
I dont know what else i can try,how do i get Windows running again if it point blank refuses? I know it is only through stupidity that i have erased something important but i dont understand why it would prevent me doing a restore/repair or full reinstallation and i have had a fair few problems over the years but nothing like this, that simply prevents me from accessing an... Hi guys,

My problem is somewhat complex so please bear with me. I had malware and adware on my laptop which was really annoying and I tried really hard to get rid of it. So I decided I was going to do a system restore. The system restore kept saying "System restore is initializing". I tried it three times and it didn't work. I looked around on the internet, and someone suggested to do the system restore while in safe mode. This is where I made my mistake. I set safe mode in msconfig.exe (not knowing you could go into safe mode while booting). msconfig forces the computer to boot into safe mode everytime, but my safe mode won't boot. I get a b;ack screen with a cursor. I have noticed that the cursor gets reset to the middle of the screen every five seconds or so. I also see the words safe mode flash in all four corners sometimes. I have tried re-installing windows 8.1 from a bootable usb, but whenever I change the boot priority, it doesn't seem to save my settings. Please tell me what my options are. Will replacing my hard drive do the trick. Thank you in advance.

Answer:I set safe mode in msconfig.exe and safe mode won't boot.

Can you restart and get into your log in screen ? If you can, enter safe mode by pressing the power button icon (lower right corner) then Shift + restart. That gets you to Advanced Settings where Safe Mode and, if that fails, Reset PC to orig settings. If you can't, try a hard reset by removing battery and all external usb attachments and then pressing and holding power button until it shuts down. Repeat a few more times to drain memory, then see if powering up will get you to log on screen.

A system restore in safe mode will just restore the malware. You need to boot into safe mode and run your anti-virus or malware program and have them quarantine and then remove them while in safe mode. Use Malwarebytes free or Adwcleaner or Hitman to clean the system. If that does the trick, manually create a system restore point that you know is clean after the system is to your satisfaction.

This morning, after resetting my PC, I encountered the blue ': (' error screen. After trying to restore to a previous instance of the PC (there were two dates to choose from), the restore failed and the two dates are no longer available.

I am unable to reset, restore, start in safe mode, etc.

What should I do?

Really weird issue. My computer locked up and restarted when I was playing Battlefield 3, not sure why. Then it didn't want to boot up for some reason. Eventually I got an error message about a disk i/o error. I assume this is due to a corrupted USB that was connected to the PC. When I removed that I was able to boot into normal mode, but not into safe mode. I didn't like this, so I went msconfig -> boot -> Safe Boot. And now every time I try to boot, no matter whether I select normal or safe mode, it tries to boot into safe mode and fails.

It gives me the menu, shows a screen loading all the system files and then says "Booting in safemode - Minimal Services". Then my monitor says "no signal" and remains black. Things are still plugged in - tapping numkey makes the light go on and off on the keyboard - but I can't actually DO anything. And now there's no way I can see to boot into normal mode.

What do I do?

Answer:Windows 7 won't boot into safe mode, WILL boot into normal mode

I just tried putting in the Windows Install disc, to try and launch the Recovery Console, but I only got 4 options on the boot up screen. 3 variations of safe mode and one "start normally" (which due to my msconfig edits means safe mode, minimal). Tried downloading a W7 64bit repair disc ISO, burnt that.. same deal.

Hello knowledgeable ones!
Switched computer on today (Medion with Windows XP) and got black screen with message to start normally or safe mode etc. Tried starting normally, after countdown, returns to same message. Tried safe mode and other options with same result. Tried rebooting with F8 pressed, takes me to Boot Menu with option of Hard Disk or CDRom. Do not have a CDrom with computer. Hard Disk option reads:
- Ch2 M : WDC WD2500JD-00HBB0 - (same message with this option)
- Bootable Add-in Cards
Where do I go from here.

Computer was working fine before, only recent event was after running Spybot Search and Destroy, an error was found regarding X10 USB Wireless Transceiver which was fixed. That was the last time it worked!
Using a neighbour's laptop who suggested I could download something to help, but what that is, neither of us know! I'd hate to lose my files which has my son's diary and photos!
Sorry to be such a novice but would appreciate some guidance. Many thanks

Hi,

my old computer has a problem . It's a PT 4 1.4 GB, Geforce MX 440 64 MB,Seagate HDD 80 GB, kingston RD RAM 384 MB, Intel Motherboard 850GB.
I reformated my computer and installed Win XP Pro SP2 new. The Installation was without any problem. But when I start up now it goes to the windows page for a very short time, then the black screen comes and after a while it restarts and the same thing happen again. I can go to the safe mode without problems. I tested RAM in safe mode and there were no errors. So what's the problem? Can it be the graphic card?

Thanks for your help.

If I boot to Safe Mode it works fine. Any ideas? is there a way to see a verbose mode at that point? I also tried copying msconfig from xp and used it to do a diagnostic startup to no avail. Do you have the Windows install CD?
1) If you do, put it in. When it says "Press __ to open Setup" or something similar, press the key it tells you to. Where it says Boot Order, make sure the CD rom is before the hard drive.
2) Reboot
3) It will say "Press any key to boot to cd..." (press any key)
4) Press R when it says "Press f8 to install, press r for recovery console"
5) Select your windows install by pressing 1, then enter
6) Type Administrator for the username, press enter
7) Leave password blank, press enter
8) type in fixboot and press enter. select y or yes if you get any prompts
9) when fixboot is done running, type in fixmbr. select y or yes if you get any prompts
10) when fixmbr is done running, type in chkdsk. select y or yes if you get any prompts
11) reboot and see what happens

When I try to get into the Safe Mode on my XP(HE), a bunch of white text runs through, and then it stops. All I'm left with is a monitor full of "scsi(0)disk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\..." lines.

The last line that it freezes on is:

"scsi(0)disk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\Mup.sys"

Last time I've waited few hours for something to happened, but everything was still the same as I left it when I came back.

Anybody know what the problem is?

I recently installed a new lcd in my laptop. The screen works perfect but there is one thing I was worried about, and thats that if any hardware got damaged at the time were i dropped my laptop. This is what happens. My computer starts up and I let it run, taking longer then normal (5 minutes) to get to the login screen. When i log in my hard drive light is a solid color and I can see its trying to boot, idk if its because something else is mest up or because the fall was to hard for it. At this point It took up to 7-8 minutes for it to just show my dekstop background (no icons, nothing but the background.) I then got a message after waiting saying my account has been corrupted. I then just thought i would go into safe mode, create a new name and transfer my files over. I then realised that I couldn't get into safe mode, i had the option to get into my cd drive or hdd drive or go to other options that don't have anything to do with boot up options. I tried loading the hard drive boot-up and wated for the option to go into boot menues and it never came. Any ideas? MUCH APPRECIATED!

Answer:Safe Mode Doesn't Show

If the laptop was dropped this is what i would do in this order:Remove the HDD access panel and remove / reseat the HDD...Re-boot and run the HDD FREE diagnostics from the drive manuf. site...Run chkdsk /r from either a command prompt and or Programs/Accessories/System Tools...Then go to Start/Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter...Have your Windows CD handy as it will ask for it...

Hello,
Safe mode isn't working for me for few months, but only now I need it badly so I came here to ask for help.
What happens is that it gets stuck on the black screen with the list of .sys files that it tries to load.
I tried removing the .sys file that appears last when it gets stuck, but it didn't help.
Normal mode is currently inaccessible as well.
I have Hiren on USB.

I'm using XP Pro SP3, Ge-force 250GTS, Hitachi 1000GB HDD.
Any other info needed? If so, please tell me and let me know how to retrieve it from the computer.

Please help.
Thank you

Click on the Start button and type in msconfig in the Search box. Run msconfig by double clicking it. Open the System Configuration box and select the Safe boot option with networking. When you restart it will be into Safe mode. You go the same path to revert to a normal boot up.

So about an hour ago my computer decided to crap out on my, when on reset my ASUS informed me that there was a power surge and was prevented. But now all I can do is access my OS via Safe Mode even if I choose to "Start Windows Normally". If I do it simply forces it into Safe Mode again. I'm at a complete loss if this is a software problem (I'm hoping so). Or if my motherboard or something else internally has been compromised or damaged when said surge happened.

Any thoughts on this or possible solutions?

Answer:Power Surge detected upon reset, windows 7 only starts up in Safe Mode

Try unplugging the PC from the mains power for a minute or two. Also try loading defaults in BIOS.

A family member has come to me requesting help with a computer problem. Unfortunately, as she lives a few states away, I can't just pop in there to help. As of a few days ago, whenever she tries booting up her Windows Vista PC (an off-the-shelf HP desktop), she is greeted with the following screen:If the image doesn't show, it's a screen that shows an icon of a padlock, the words/logo "Windows Password-Reset", and a box that says:"Choose the userChoose the user whosepassword you want to reset:AdministratorGuestMy Relative's UsernameOkReboot"I was told that her account/username doesn't have a password, and that if she clicks on "Ok" she's prompted for some sort of authorization key. Choosing to reboot takes her back to that screen and she's not able to get to the OS.I tried directing her to get into safe mode via the F8 key, but she claims she can't; this screen pops up immediately as soon as she resets the computer or turns it on.Any ideas of what to do and where to start with this one? Thanks in advance.

My idiot self put a password on my computer to protect it temporarially, then by gods sense of humor the computer shut down through loss of pwer. But the password didn't save correctly and now I can't get on my account. It's the only user, and whenever I try using safe mode with command prompt, it goes to the user log in screen, which defeats the purpose.

In short, I need to reset my passdword, while not being able to log on in any way through the username. I would rather not have to wipe my harddrive, I have no recovery disc, nor partition for some reason. If I have to I will wipe my harddrive then download win7 again, but I need to know how to do that first. Any help?

Hi there , i know that there are a few threads posted about this problem but OP's never post enough info on the problem , after fiddling with the startup options and the general recovery process im going to post here before trying a clean install , i need to get to the bottom of this!

A Quick overview :

I made a clean install for windows 8 through my USB (used the windows 7 tool for that) , installed windows 8 without a single problem , used it for 3 days straight without any problems (some minor freezes here and there) , games were working fine and 3D applications (Maya , Unity3D..etc) worked fine. I updated my Windows to the latest update (some drivers were included through the update) , the night before this nightmare started i turned it off and went to sleep , next morning i woke up turned it on but i had to leave so i turned it off on the lock screen (before logging in). turned it on later that night and this problem happend.

Problem :

"Automatic Repair" saying "Automatic Repair Couldn't Repair Your PC".
The file is "F:\WINDOWS\System32\Logfiles\Srt\SrtTrail.txt".

I went to advanced options and tried the following:

1- Restore from system point :

gave me an error that the system Protection service needs to be activated.

2- CMD :

tried SFC / scannow and it gave me the same error above "system Protection service could not be started" .
tried chkdsk and it said that no problems were found.

3- tried through advanced star... Read more

same thing happened to me... That will probably take less time than actually getting reasonable help from Microsoft. Why don't I switch to Apple?

I am running using Dell Inspiron with windows vista. A couple days ago, I got on the computer and then it froze, at fist the program I was using froze, and then I got a circle next to the arrow, but could still move the arrow, then the arrow stops moving. CTL ALT DEL does not work, so i must do a hard reboot, try to boot in safe mode and all the files come up but then it goes no where and the computer either restarts or I reboot it.

I have run all types of tests and nothing comes up. Today I got the blue screen of death twice, but after reboot, it goes away. I do not have a Boot Disk and have tried all the tests in the F8 command. Currently I am running an expanded memory test, but figured I would get this out there before I go insane.

Any ideas would be MUCH appreciated.

Hello all
First time poster with problem after peforming sys restore on win7 pro 64bit.
Was troubleshooting a problem w/taskbar not staying hidden, tried to restore back 24hrs to when a java update occured. Restore seemed to proceed normally, but upon restart, it boots normally to just before the login screen would appear, then the screen goes black and all that is visible is the cursor , which I can still move.
But that's as far as it gets. Trying to boot in safe mode, or repair mode ends exact same way - can't boot in to try anything
Any ideas??

Answer:Black screen at boot with safe mode, system restore, or repair mode

no one has any suggestions? I also triedtoboot to my win7 dvd to see if I could attempt to repair but again, it only gets thru the windows bootscreen then goes black with only the mouse cursor showing as before.

I have also made sure my whole pc is all clean and connected, no corroding parts etc etc, made sure my pci-e slot is default etc etc, no luck at all...

Its a new installation and worked fine last night and early this morning after separate boots. But as soon as I booted this afternoon it wouldn't load and would hit the blue error crash dump screen....

So any suggestions?

Just last night My main HDD died also which is why I had to use my secondary HDD as my main....

Hi there, I'm trying to fix my Aunt's windows XP computer. I downloaded MBAM as she had previously mentioned getting a call on the phone from someone in India telling her she needed to pay $160 for her antivirus or her computer would shut down.

I ran MBAM and it took about 8 hours to scan, and at the very end found a bunch of results. I told it to get rid of them, and then restarted. Upon restarting, it also ran a disk check, and after that finished, it booted up but took forever to load. Upon loading the taskbar showed up for a brief moment, then disappeared, and I can't seem to get it to run from the task manager either. It brings up the explorer.exe process briefly, then without ever loading the taskbar, it ends the process.

I got a bit worried at this point and tried to restart in safe mode. However, when I do that, it loads a bunch of drivers and then stops. It never finishes loading. (this happens in safe mode with and without networking)

I also tried restarting back into normal mode and running avast through command prompts, but it doesn't do anything and I also got errors stating that a particular file is missing.

What should I do next? I was going to attempt running combofix from my flash drive, but when I try to CD into the drive, it says the drive isn't ready. If you have any suggestions on what to do, let me know, thanks.

Answer:Unable to boot in safe mode, explorer.exe not loading in normal mode

Do not run combofix, let me ask someone to help you

good luck

Answer:BSOD when trying to boot in normal mode, safe mode works fine

You may need to run SFC up to 3 times for it to have a chance to repair all files.

If it won't then you can consider a Repair Install.

However be aware that factory preinstalled Win7 is one of the worst possible installs of Win7 one can have, larded with bloatware and duplicate utilties that intefere with better versions built into Win7. So I would strongly consider doing the vastly superior Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7.

If you decide to try to repair you can also capture the BSOD file and post it up for one of our BSOD analysts as shown here: Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instructions - Windows 7 Forums

Hi, today I decided to restart my PC but it got stuck at the "logging off" screen, so I just held down power button to turn it off.
When I tried turning it back on, it got stuck at the windows logo. Safe-mode won't work, nor will system recovery.Note: I had not made any hardware changes in the past 3 years. I also don't think I have made any big software changes in the past couple of weeks.

What I was doing before I decided to reboot:
I was reinstalling different versions of firefox because I was having flash issues (FF and Flash arent very compatible on some of the newer FF versions)

So I installed 30.0 and it asked me reboot to finish the installation and here I am. I don't think it's related, might be just a coincidence.

Full details of what is happening:
Normal boot-up freezes at the windows7 logo. The animation freezes too. PC does not auto re-boot.
Safe-mode gets stuck while loading components. Notably at storport.sys (not sure if I spelt that right) PC does not auto re-boot.
System recovery freezes after a while during the © Mircosoft Corporation screen with green loading bar. PC does not auto re-boot.
The little light that flickers when the PC is doing something is not lighting up during the loading screens. It flickers for the first couple of seconds and then just stops (or very faintly flicks every 3-4 secs) The loading screen animation then freezes after ~10-15 seconds.

Hi,
I have a Sony VGN-FW139E with window vista. When my computer tried to boot into Windows, it just hangs on window vista loading screen.
If I selected Safe mode or Safe mode with Networking, I got this message.

Please wait?
Then it did not get any further. Is there any solution to fix this problem? Thx..

See if selecting Last Known Good Configuration helps.

In MSconfig I set windows to boot into safe mode, now it will not boot at all. Previously it booted into normal mode.

I used a Windows recovery disc from which the only option that works is the command prompt. From the cmd prompt I can see all of C: drive and also run regedit.

Is there anyway from the cmd prompt to reset Boot from safe mode back to normal mode?

Answer:Windows fails to boot, into safe mode or normal mode

Safe Mode - Start Windows 10 in - Windows 10 Forums
Option 3 and then number 5

Hope that works. Always worth checking the Tutorial section. Please have a look.

Or, if you have restore points, you can run System restore from your boot disk.

Failing those, it is possible to restore the backup copy of your registry.

When back running again (hopefully) I suggest you then do an in-place upgrade repair install.
Instructions also in the Tutorial section.
Keeps all your progs + data and most settings.

Once you have a stable working PC, I would urge you then to start using disk imaging e.g. Macrium Reflect (free) + its boot medium + external storage so you ca recover from many problems to a previous working state without technical help.

Ok, so I'm helping someone can help me on here. I was origionally running Windows 7 but had to install Ubuntu alongside it. I was installing a game, then started playing it while it continued downloading (it was a streaming download.) It ran fine for about 10 min, and then the computer froze. I decided to restart it and now it wont boot back up. Everytime I try booting it into either safe mode or regular mode it gets to the windows loading screen and then goes to the bsod and restarts. When I try booting it in safe mode it will load all the drivers until it reaches aswrvrt, then bsod flashes and it restarts. I tried booting it into recovery mode but it will reach a gray screen and then hang. I can move the courser around but nothing loads. I installed Ubuntu on a sd card so I can try and fix the problem. I can access all the data on the hard drive, so I tried uninstalling avast and the game. I dont think it worked since I can still see the files.Does anyone know what I am talking about and can help me?

Answer:Windows 7 wont boot into safe mode or recovery mode

Your Windows installation has corrupted in some way. If you cannot enter the "Last Known Good" option from the recovery screen you should then be looking at booting from a repair disk and repairing your file system.

EDIT: that is a windows repair disk specific to your OS that I am talking about.

Let me open by saying I'm too old to understand most of the jargon and directions found in a technical forum like this. I've been trying to fix this myself for about two weeks, and have made so many changes, I've probably made a complete hash of it.

The latest thing I did was to attempt a fresh install of Windows from a DVD. I had to format the C drive to have enough space for the installation, so I did. The installation seemed to running normally, so I took our dog for a walk. When I came back, there was this error message: "Installation was cancelled."

The details of the error message are as follows: "Windows cannot install required files. Make sure all files required for installation are available, and restate the installation. Error code: 0x80070070"

My fear is that my hard drive has failed. When it's trying to boot up, there's always a line that says something to the effect that no drives were found. However, when running GPart from a disc, it finds both C & D. I tried to use one of the GPart tools to repair C, but it didn't work. It said I need to "Run chkdsk /f, the reboot TWICE." I can't do that, because I can't get it to boot into a command prompt.

I think I already destroyed all of my data on D, where it was all stored, in trying to install Windows. At one point, it told me that Windows could not proceed with formatting if D was excluded, so I removed the exclusion. I think that was a bad mistake.

Answer:Windows crashed. Now can't boot, even in repair mode or safe mode.

You did a few smart things. So do not despair.

As a first measure I would try to save as much of your data as possible. Since you have the Xubuntu disc, try that.

Then you really should run the chkdsk /f. If you load your installation disk and go to "Repair this Computer" (or something like that), there should be a Command Prompt.

If that is all done, try to reinstall again and come back to let us know how you are doing.

I managed to run ad-adaware with the latest defs once, did a preboot scan with avast, then booted into normal mode. I tried to install the lastest defs for spybot S&D, and got this error message:

the installer you are trying to use is corrupted or incomplete.
This could be the result of a damaged disk, a failed download or a virus.

Upon reboot, the system freezes before the desktop finishes loading. I can still boot into safe mode, but running any scan, ad-aware or spybotS&D, causes a system freeze. Here is the HJT log:

I'm new to this forum and not a very sophisticated user, but help would be appreciated. I am running Windows XP (Build 2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.080814-1233: Service Pack2). My computer froze and I had to hold power button to shut down. Shortly before I froze a window popped open to tell me that windows security firewall had been changed to off. I switched it back to on, but then the computer froze up a few minutes later. When I try to boot in normal mode I can log-in, but about 3 seconds after I see my desktop the screen goes black and I need to hold the power button down to turn off. I am only able to boot in safe mode. I have run spybot and adaware in safe mode and they find 'Virtumonde'. Spybot also finds 'MicrosoftWindowsSecurityCenter_disabled'. I correct/fix these problems in the software, but when I reboot nothing has changed and when I run them again (in safe mode) they find the exact same problems.

I tried following the directions on 'Read and Run me First', but don't get far because I can only boot in safe mode... I can't use the program uninstall that is part of the control panel to get rid of the Java updates of which I have a few - this seems to be because I am in safe mode. Also, it sounds like steps 2 and 3 also require to be booted in normal mode. Is it possible to complete 'read and run me first' in safe mode?

Any advice on how to proceed from here would be appreciated. thank you.

MALWARE issues!!!I was having trouble staying in SAFEMODE to try to do some cleanup on my Laptop. The malware prevented my getting into safe mode and would cause the pc to just reboot normally. Because of this, I went into the msconfig>system config utility > boot.ini> then placed a check in the safemode box. I rebooted. Now its worse because it is now stuck with the BLACK screen safe mode choices. But It still wont go into safe mode and wont even reboot normally to reg windows mode.It trys to reboot on its own after a countdown of 30 seconds. But a blue screen quickly flashes once. Then it tries to reboot over and over again no matter which option I pick (last known config, safe mode networking, safe mode, safe with command, etc), it just tries to reboot over and over again like a broken record.I can get into phoenix BIOS by pushing F10 (or F12 I think), but I dont know what I can do there. At this point, i just want my pc to be able to boot normally into Window, and I will see what I can do in reg windows mode as far as cleaning the malware off my pc.Please help in easy terms. Thanks for your help in advance...PS: Windows Home edition OEM sp2 IE7-HP pavillion 8100 laptop-I have the original sealed discs that came with my 4 or so year old Laptop.I just need to be walked step by step if I need to boot from them. Please, can somebody assist me. When I try to log into vista normal mode all I get is 'Please Wait' where the 'welcome' logo used to be and it just sits there saying "Please Wait . . . ." forever. When I could login to safe mode I enable the verbose command and restarted and tried normal mode again and it would say "Please wait for the Local Session Manager . . ." and never get past that screen. Now, for some reason, I cannot even log into any safe mode options. After the safe mode drivers load, the computer just hangs at crcdisk.sys after it's loaded and not proceed. So, then I tried to boot to the cd to use the repair utility and my computer won't even acknowledge it, it just takes to me the three safe mode options. In the past I could boot to the cd and use the repair disk and now I can't. Please don't tell me I am screwed. I have so much valuable info that I would really not want to lose. So if anybody can please help me to try and resolve this, I would be greatly appreciative. Thnx

Hey guys,
Thanks ahead of time for the help. I can honestly say I'm dumbfounded with this issue and would rather ask for help then hook up my master HD as a slave and force a reformat which would be my next step.

Anyways, here's the background on the issue.

Rig:
AMD Athlon 64 3700+ OC'd to 2.75ghz
Asus A8N SLI Deluxe Mobo
BFG Tech Nvidia 7800 GTOC x2 (SLI)
Dual Sata Hd's, both the 3gb/s connection. (750gb main/250gb Backup)
Sound Blaster XFI Fatal1ty sound card
Creative modem blaster v.92 dialup modem ( @ dialup)

A few days ago, not quite sure why, but when I booted the comp the graphics card proceeded to tweak out and basically looked like fuzz upon entering windows. Eventually after hard resetting it a few times it'd boot normal. Today, I was running Nvidia NTune utility to find a stable OC setup for my PCI bus and what not, and it rebooted as normal during the process. Graphics card tweaked again, so I did what I know to do and uninstalled/reinstalled the drivers for my 7800's. Seemingly fixed the problem. Rebooted and resumed the OC process and went to watch TV.

45 Minutes later I come back and my computer is rebooting itself constantly. Upon getting the the xp loading screen, it BSoD's and reboots.

So, I try and boot in safemode to uninstall/reinstall drivers yet again. When I press safemode, it begins loading basic drivers. When it gets to SPTD.sys it pauses, locks up, and reboots (no BSoD)

Next step, repair through XP installer di... Read more

Answer:[SOLVED] BSoD on standard boot, safe mode boot, and xp install disc boot

Update:

Well, a friend needed me to fix a design for him emergency status in Illustrator CS3, so I went to work troubleshooting.

All signs point to NTFS.sys being corrupt, etc. Which makes the drive unreadable, hence the reboots.

So, I snagged my dads IDE harddrive from his computer, hooked it up as master in my computer and it still gave me the BSoD. I then unhooked both of my Sata Hd's, and ran ONLY the IDE drive. This IDE drive is fine (i'm on it right now on my dads comp to write this). I try and boot my system off just his harddrive and it STILL gave me the BSoD.

Only difference is the BSoD is staying up now on normal boot so I can give you the error.

Error code is 0x0000007B? I believe.

But yeah, the computer is still unable to boot off a good HD even with the bad ones not hooked up.

Now I'm thinking a memory issue? or Video ram issue? Fried GPU/RAM?

AHHHHHH!!!!! i have no idea what to do. This is ridiculous. meanwhile my friend is screwed on his design for a t-shirt i told him i'd do.

My PC has decided that it won't work grr. I was using it last night and set it to shut down after installing Windows updates. This morning I turned it on and its as if there are no drivers installed at all - graphics are knackered, my mouse and keyboard won't work etc.

My keyboard works in DOS, so I've booted it in Safe Mode, but as soon I've set it to boot in Safe Mode the same thing happens. My mouse light goes out and even thought it loads up in Safe Mode, my graphics are knackered, mouse and keyboard don't respond etc.

I've tried booting it in the last config that worked as well but that doesn't fix it. I'm going to try and get a hold of a PS/2 mouse and keyboard to see if they work instead, but I'm not sure they will.

I think it might be something to do wih the Windows update. Any ideas? I'd really appreciate any help =)

Thanks,
Ben

Please help, whenever I turn my computer on, the screen goes black just before the login screen. The computer still works, as it still makes all the noises it would normally make, eg. the login noise if I type my password. If I hit F8 when the computer first starts, it comes up with lots of options, one of those is 'last known good configuration'. That use to work and fix it, but now it no longer does. The computer also works perfectly fine on safe mode. My OS is Vista business, I have an Intel Core 2 Duo processor 2GHz, 2GB RAM, 32-bit OS. If I go into control panel in safe mode and go to problem reports and solutions, it says there is a problem with my graphics driver, but I can't find a way to update it. That's my summary, if you think you can solve it, below is more detailed.
I use my laptop at school. One day I closed it (which locks my computer), but when I opened it, the screen wouldn't work, but it still made all the regular sounds, such as the music I was playing. When I turned it on and off, it worked up until just before the login screen. This would keep happening unless I ran it in safe mode. Eventually I took it to the school IT department and they fixed it.
Quite a bit later the same thing happened. This time, while in safe mode, when the help menu came up, I searched around a bit until I found that hitting f8, when the computer starts, gives you a boot up menu. I tried this and one of the options was last known good configuration (LKGC), I chose this and the co... Read more

Answer:My screen doesn't work except in safe mode.

To me, this sounds like an issue with graphics card drivers.
When you go into Safe Mode, hit to go into Safe Mode with Networking. Without it you cannot go on to the internet (Which is also why you can't download drivers when you hook up a USB Drive...I think it usually goes to Windows Update, but cannot connect because you are in Safe Mode without Networking).
Go to the site for your graphics card's drivers and try installing the drivers fresh.

I'm not the best at this, but I read your post and that's what I think is wrong. I could be wrong. If it's not the problem, then I don't know and sorry.

My computer got infected with 'Winsecurity toolbar 2.1' (a spyware) and to fix it, I installed and ran SuperAnti Spyware (reviews say it's good). It then asked me to restart the pc, which I did manually. When it reached the 'click your username to continue' stage, the usernames weren't there. I opened my user with Ctrl+Alt+Del but then only the wallpaper showed up, no icons. I then tried to load it in safe mode but now only the blue screen ('windows is starting up...') appears and it doesn't go any further.

Please find me a solution. ANY help would be highly appreciated...

Many thanks...

Answer:Why doesn't Windows load (not even in safe mode)?

Once you log in (without any icons)
Do a Ctrl + Alt + Del again
Hopefully Task Manager opens
Click on File-->Run-->explorer.exe

Do your icons now show?

If so, do the following:
Check the Shell value for Winlogon in your registry (start->Run->Regedit). Under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
should show:

Shell REG_SZ explorer.exe

Or download this tool: http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/XP_FixLogon.zip
This utility checks for the correct GINA value in the Registry and will allow you to restore it, if its incorrect.

After reading several posts on my separate laptop I was able to get the error code for why the Windows 7 isn't loading.

stop : 0X00000024 (0X0000000000190494 , 0xFFFFFA800471DA70, 0XFFFFFFFFC0000102 , 0X0000000000000000)

The pc was built with several different parts by my ex and I don't have the CD for Windows 7 to use on it. I was thinking about reformatting it anyway, but couldn't since the drive I wanted to format was running Windows 7.

Any ideas on how to get my pc to work without the CD?

Answer:Not loading OS, Safe mode doesn't work

It seems a problem with ntfs.sys. The best way is to use recovery console but since you don't have the installation cd you can't do that. So try to run chkdsk /f /r, this may do the job.
It would be better if you attach the dump file to your post.

Yes, remove the viruses.
Almost positive the virus causes this issue.

Do you have any virus scanners?
If not, I would suggest the following...

AVG Free - Download Free Antivirus and Antispyware for Windows XP and Vista
OR
Download FREE antivirus software - avast! Home Edition
OR
Free antivirus - Avira AntiVir

Any of those will work, and its up to you on the choice.
I personally use avast, but I've heard good things about the others also.

Let me know.
Thanks.

Okay, I run a Windows XP Pro SP2 computer as my main home computer. My problem could have started when I pressed my keyboard's Power button for my computer to shut off, which it did.  Later that night I came back out and tried to turn it back on.  It came as far as the Loading screen (the one with Windows XP on it with the moving bar on the bottom of the page) and it just stays there. When I restart it from that point and wait, I get the option for Safe Mode.  I try Safe mode and it works, at least twice.  Now that I had my computer try to restore itself, Safe Mode doesn't even work anymore...it just just sticks at Mup.sys and doesn't move.

Answer:Safe Mode worked, but Normal doesn't?

alright, first try and reset CMOS if you can then reboot in safe mode. If you get that far, click on my computer and right click on your hard drive (C: drive) , then to shared and make sure that you dont have it set as private or anything like that. see if that works

When I log on to safe mode in XP my cursor does not work. I can tab to different functions and I can type in safe mode with command prompt. The cursor works in all other modes. I'm using a Kensington Expert Mouse 5 with a serial connection, and I'm using the version of the mouseworks driver that Kensington recommends (5.61) for serial connections. Any ideas of why the cursor is frozen in safe mode?

Answer:Cursor doesn't work in Safe Mode in XP

I think that would be a good question for Kensington. Do they claim this mouse driver is XP compatible? Can it be adapted to PS2?

I've posted this whole story on another forum, but if anyone here has any suggestions then I'd love to hear them.

Basically, my computer seems to be fine, but I need to get into Safe Mode, and I can't! It runs the drivers down the page and then reboots itself!

Thank you everybody

Answer:Window XP loads... but Safe Mode doesn't

Have a gander here, but be very sure you know what you are doing if you choose to update the BIOS ...

http://www.mcpmag.com/columns/print.asp?EditorialsID=729

Find Ntbtlog.txt (in c:\windows) and see what the next driver is.

On my system it is: agp440.sys

Hangs here indicate a problem with the VGA drivers being loaded. I've seen this a few times and it can be resolved by updating the Video drivers.

On a Dell Dimension E521 with XP installed the computer will not load XP. I am given options to boot to Safe Mode, Safe Mode with networking, etc., load last configuration that worked but none of the options work.

I have tried to Restore XP but a password is required and I can't seem to remember what or if one was used...all I try are rejected.

I can choose to format the drive but I would like to find out if there is a way I can get access to my files before I do that. I keep most files on a thumb drive but there are some on the hard drive I'd like to at least see the names of before I format the drive. How can I do that?

When I try to start my computer normally it just restarts. I do not have a blue screen. Originally, I had problems with the computer freezing up immediately after logging on. Now it won't boot up normally at all. I also can't access control panel, use the search on my computer, or run malwarebytes, even in safe mode. All of these things cause my computer to freeze up. Thanks in advance!

Hi, I've searched around for quite a long time on this one, and although I've seen a few people with similar problems, I haven't seen anyone posting a solution. So here goes...

My computer works! However, I really want to change some of the security settings and to do this I need to start in Safe Mode, which won't work.

(If anyone knows how to change the security in Windows XP Home without Safe Mode I'd like to know, but I really want to fix the Safe Mode problem).

When I boot up in Safe mode, it starts to load, runs a list of drivers down the screen, then just stops and freezes (at one called mup.sys, although I have a hunch the problem is caused by the driver immediatley following this one) and then restarts the computer.

I have been through a long toruous process of buying a new harddrive and reinstalling windows because this problem got worse (although that was probably my fault) and having reinstalled all of my software from scratch... it's there again!!!

There must be something different about the way that Safe mode uses the
drivers than a normal boot, which is causing this!

My best guess it's a hardware problem (I recently bought a mains powered 4-port usb hub) but I don't seem to be able to stop it be removing the hardware. It could also be a software thing, so to ease the process here's a list of the main things I run: (Windows XP SP2 Home, Panda Titanium 05, Zonealarm, Nero (all of it) and a whole bunch of (I think) harmless other stuff.

I was using the machine, then all of a sudden it froze. I let it stand there for ~20 mins before holding the power button so it would turn off. When I try to turn it on and here's what happens:Normal boot: Stops here Safe boot: Starts listing all of the proceses (which is what usually happens, then stops at system32/drivers/Mup.sys and that's it.Is there a way to get my files off of that computer or is it done?

Answer:Netbook doesn't start normally nor in safe mode

What exactly were you doing/what sites were you visiting when the system stopped working or shortly before that time? Is it possible that malware has found its way onto your system and caused the problem?Sure, you can retrieve your files: Use Linux on a flashdrive to boot into one of the various Linux varieties, and you will be able to copy your files to one or more flashdrives, or external hard drives.Using a working computer:If you wish to use a LIVE CD ...There are many options to use for a LIVE CD: Try Puppy Linux (download file size 128 MB) or Ubuntu (download file size almost 700 MB).
When you have downloaded the ISO image, burn it to a CD using ImgBurn (choose "Write image file to disc").
The CD will be bootable.[*]OR ... if you wish to use a flashdrive ...Go to UNetbootin - Homepage and Downloads and at the top of the page, click on Download (for Windows) to download the application. Please follow the instructions further down the page under the heading Installation & Screenshots to run the application and install the Linux version of your choice to your flashdrive. I suggest that you try Puppy Linux (download file size 128 MB) or Ubuntu (download file size almost 700 MB).[/list]Boot the problematic machine from the LIVE CD or flashdrive.(You may have to configure the BIOS Setup Menu, or just your Boot Menu, to boot first from the optical/CD drive or the flashdrive.)Choose to run the Linux operating system from the CD or flashdrive without making any cha... I'm dealing with a windows 7 professional 32-bit operating system for a client of mine, ive tried everything to get their profile to boot but it keeps freezing after you put in the credentials. I have tried everything from combo fix to Microsoft root-kit  tools but no luck.

i have  even cloned the hard drive and thrown it into another machine just to see if it is the motherboard or ram. I'm stumped and need some input.

Thanks
