I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello ..This is for my friend who has a dell inspiron 1525.We have done what it says and reseated the hard drive, but we are still getting this message.I have ran the diagnostics test, and confirmed the the drive is not being detected in the BIOSWe have tryed to reseat the drive a few times but without any luck..Is there anything else we could try, but luck is not on our side at the moment as we have no other laptop we can try this drive on.I was wondering what might have caused this, ryan my friend says he had fallen asleep and had left the laptop on for about 10 hours  , it was buried in the bed, so could over heating have caused this

Answer:HELP - DELL INSPIRON 3542 "Internal hard disk drive not found..."

Hi Brandon,
Welcome to the Dell Community Forum.
Turn on the system, at startup or at Dell logo tap F2 to open BIOS. In the BIOS screen, check what is listed for fixed HDD. If the HDD size is not listed, try reseating the HDD & check if it helps. Refer to the link below for the service manual.

Hi all,

I am attempting to install Win7 in an Inspiron 1545 with a new SATA hard drive that was purchased. When i insert the drive, I get "Internal Hard Disk Drive Not Found." I have verified the drive is not showing in the BIOS, I've already attempted to reseat the drive several times. In addition, I've attempted to load the chipset drivers, SATA drivers, etc from Dells website, the drive still does not show in the OS install when booting to DVD or in bios.
I dont believe it to be an issue with the new drive, as I plugged the new drive into another model Dell laptop and it recognizes the drive fine in BIOS, also I can still boot to the previous hard drive in this laptop without issue when i plug it back in.
Is there a specific driver, etc that I need to use for the drive to be recognized or other thoughts people have?

Answer:Inspiron 1545- replacing hard drive, new SATA drive not found "Internal Hard Disk Drive Not Found

This is strange - either the new hard drive has a rare compatibility issue with your onboard controller (I use a 500Gbyte in my 1545 without probs)) or it is a mechanical problem.I would take a close look at the physical dimensions and compare your original hdd with the new one.Watch the video (even though it's about a 1525 (similar to an 1545) and an SSD hdd) -  go to 2:20

Hi, After turning on my laptop I am getting an error message, "Internal hard disk drive not found". No bootable devices.
I've turned it off, unplugged, removed battery, unplugged/re plugged disk and rebooted but that didn't do it.
I ran the ePSA prebiotic assessment. Everything ok, EXCEPT it tells me my hard drive is not installed.
F2 Set Up>Boot:
Fast boot enabled
Boot list option UEFI
Secure boot enabled
Load legacy option disabled
Boot option #1 onboard NIC ( IPv6)
Boot option #2 onboard NIC (IPv4)
Anyone experiencing this and found a solution that works?
Thanks,
Amy

It says please reseat drive. I replaced my old hard drive and my new hard drive was working for 3 days. Then it came out with the same issue my old hard drive had. Please help, I don't want to buy a third hard drive

Answer:Dell Inspiron 1440 no hard disk drive found

If you installed a 7 mm drive, you likely need a spacer to ensure  it connects in place of the original drive, which is 9.5 mm in height.

In the morning the pc was working just fine, i turned it off and then back on to change to a another operating system. Instead of taking me to the boot options it took me to a black screen saying;
intenal hard disk drive not found
to resolve this issue, try to reseat the drive.
No bootable devices--strike F1 to retry to boot, F2 enter Setup Menu, F5 enter PSA
I didnt did anything to the pc, it was just sitting in the table and so I doubt it may be related to the hardware as several forums say.
When I enter the BIOS it says on Fixed HDD; ST500LM012 HN-M500MBB                                              (500 Gb)
Here the details of the computer
Dell Inspiron 15N 3520
Windows 8 (with 8.1 Preview and Ubuntu)
uses UEFI
Core I5 2.5 GHz
4GB DDR3 Ram
500 GB of HDD (i think it has a 32GB SSD cache)

Please help, i have tried reading all over the internet and trying everything  that does not require opening the device (the device is new and is not easy as I would like it to be).
Can anyone tell me what to do or if it can be saved without any hardware change? It only has about 2 months and  i have important information inside (yeah no back up...)

Answer:Dell Inspiron 3520 Internal Disk not Found

Hi joseph97svl,
Thank you for the update.
Since the HDD is detected in the BIOS and also the test passed, the hardware is functioning as designed. I suspect it is a software issue and you may consider restoring the system using the recovery discs.  Follow the instruction given in the following link to restore the system using the recovery media:
http://dell.to/12Z2Lkq
In case the recovery discs are not created, send me a private message with the system service tag to assist you further.  Please click on my name and click Start Conversation to send me a private message.

Hi,
I have a Dell XPS 15 9530 and I'm getting this message when I try to boot it up:
internal hard disk drive not found
to resolve this issue, try reseat the drive
No bootable devices--strike F1 to retry boot, F2 enter setup Menu, F5 enter PSA.
The drive shows up in the setup menu under mSATA. I have ran all the test in the ePSA Pre-boot System assessment. All the test pass, including the Hard Drive 0 test. Has mentioned in the message I have tried reseating my drive, with no success unfortunately.
I do not know what else to do.

Answer:Dell XPS 15 - internal hard disk not found message when booting

Do you have a single, mSATA drive, or an mSATA drive (32G, usually), plus a 2.5" hard drive?
If you have the 32+hard drive setup, it sounds like the hard drive has failed -- you'll need to replace that and reload everything (the OS is stored on the hard drive - the mSATA drive is just a cache).

Hey all I have an Alienware X51 R3 and I was messing with my command prompt and accidentally changed what I believe is the path too boot my hard drive... In the command prompt I said

bcdedit /set {bootmgr} path \EFI\

I then reset my computer and now I get a "Internal hard disk drive not found to resolve this issue, try to reseat the drive. No bootable devices. Strike F1 to retry boot, F2 enter Setup Menu, F5 enter PSA"

I don't know what to do, I can boot my Linux OS by inserting my USB and I can mount my HDD and will have access to all the files in my drive.
I have no idea how to fix this, my computer will boot and instantly give that message unless I have my USB in to auto boot the Linux OS.How can I fix the path back to my HDD? Can I change anything in my hard drive through my Linux OS and make it work again? I don't even know how I would be able to reformat if I had no other option. What an I do?

Answer:Internal hard disk drive not found

This is my bootmgr entry, this is if you have a recovery partition as your first volume. If your boot partition is the first partition then the device value will end in HarddiskVolume1.

You probably just need to re-point path to the efi file.

I have a Dell Inspiron Laptop 1526, 2 years old. It came with Vista. I upgraded to Windows 7 back in Dec 2009.
I backed up my files onto an external HD the day before my system got this error. (3 days ago)
I physically took a picture of the screen with my camera to show what I was getting.
The first screen shows that internal hard disk drive not found.
Then I tried to do a "repair", and this is what it shows now ( i also took a picture of that too)

Test Performed:
System Disk Test
Result: Completed successfully. Error code OXO
Time taken 15ms

Root cause found:
System volume on disk corrupt
Repair Action: File system repair (chkdsk)

I have the original Dell OS CD...it says its Window XP service pack 2...however it came with Vista installed.
I also have the Windows 7 CD

Thank you
Elizabeth

Answer:Internal hard disk drive not found

Run hard drive diagnostics: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287 (or http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic28744.html)Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD (select "Write image file to disc" option), and make the CD bootable.NOTE. If your hard drive is made by Toshiba, unfortunately, you're out of luck, because Toshiba doesn't provide any diagnostic tool.

I checked the BIOS and it shows the hard drive is there and also ran the Dell Startup thing that checks the different components and got no errors.

What do I do next?

Answer:Internal hard disk drive not found...

Run the Dell Diagnostics again but this time select the Custom Hard drive extended test. The hard drive has most likely failed.

Answer:Internal hard disk drive not found.

You will need external media to boot into the Command Prompt, either a Recovery Drive or Install Media.  You may be able to download the install media from Dell and make a bootable flash drive.
Another alternative might be to boot into the media and run the command below.
bootrec /rebuildbcd
The real entry looks like the one below.. Of course, your volume numbers and GUID numbers will probably be different.
path                    \EFI\MICROSOFT\BOOT\BOOTMGFW.EFI
While there you might do a bcdedit  to make sure it looks something like this.

Oh boy. Somewhere between the time I posted tonight about my computer running slow and now, my computer has completely failed me.

It's a Dell Inspiron 9300. About 4 years old. Without finding a way into it, I can't tell you much else. The only thing I downloaded today was HJT so I could post a log on the other thread I have up.

I fell asleep on the couch, and when I awoke, there was a lovely blue screen with some gibberish about "if this is the first time you have seen this screen, restart" and when I did...BLACK SCREEN and this horrendous clicking noise coming from the lower right-hand side of the unit. I should also mention the unit was so hot to the touch I nearly burned myself. Literally. It's gotten hot before, but this was honestly stove-top burner hot.

The message is "internal hard disk drive not found" press f1 to continue or f2 to...something. F1 gets me back to the same black screen. F2 gets me to bios where it confirms I no longer have an internal hard drive.

The good news is I have an external harddrive backup. The bad news is it was last backed up on 9/10 and I've done at least 20 jobs since then (graphic design) and three in progress with in-hand dates of less than 5 days from now. I'm just sick. AND I KNOW BETTER!

Anyway, is it really toast?! Help!
Natalie

Answer:Internal hard disk drive not found - PLEASE HELP!!

Yeah 4 years out of a Hard Drive is actually very good. There are a couple ways to retrieve the data. It just depends on how important it is. If it is very very important ($2500 important) than locate a data recovery center.

So I've had my Dell Inspiron for about a year now. The other day, I tried turning it on, and it brought up only a black screen telling me to try reseating the hard drive. I figured I was supposed to take out and put back in the hard drive. After doing this twice, the screen keeps coming up. I would love to be able to use my computer again. Am I doing anything wrong? I still have a warranty for a week. Would that help with this situation? I have a Dell Inspiron 15 3541

So lo and behold this morning I found my internal hard drive disk was not working. I ran the pre boot diagnostics and everything else was working fine. I went to best buy and got another hard drive (1 TB SATA drive) and switched the old one with the new one. The computer still won't boot, but now the pre boot diagnostics recognizes the drive is present and says it's working fine. Any ideas?

Hello! I have a Dell studio 1735 laptop, with (seemingly) common problem and even more interesting spin to it.

When I boot, it sticks to the dell bios screen at about 95%, then shows up with this message:

"internal hard disk drive not found
To resolve this issue, try to reseat the drive."
(system beeps)
"No bootable devices--strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility
Press F5 to run onboard diagnostics"

Of course, i press F5, it runs its full diagnostics, with flying colors (everything passes)
once thats done, it boots to windows fine, but its the ONLY way im able to boot to windows,i just dont want to have to do the full diagnostic EVERY time i turn on my laptop.. (plus i think that means that the HDD is going bad?)

I have reseated, checked connections, etc. i have pretty much checked all that i can find online about how to fix this issue, but no one else seems to have the same situation i do.

im not sure if anyone could help me, but im savvy enough to dump diagnostic files on here/etc.. i appreciate the help in advance

This is a Dell Latitude laptop with Windows XP
I let the battery die on it and when i plugged it in the next morning to turn it on I get that error message. I tried taking out the hard drive and putting it back in. The BIOS is not seeing any hard drive. It reads "<none>"
I am not sure if the battery discharging has anything to do with it or not.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Answer:Internal hard disk drive not found after battery discharge

Faulty HDD Controller but I would have that laptop check out if you can. Most likely it's the MOBO that is to blame. MOBO = Motherboard. See if that was XP not seeing the HDD then you could re-install XP. But you said your BIOS is not seeing the HDD. It could also be your HDD as failed. Normally DELL has a tool that you run to test your system out. This tool is use by DELL Certified Techs to see where your issue is. HDD, MOBO, Battery. Most of the time the MOBO is replaced. Then HDD then the Battery to solve your issue.

My Dell has been acting up pretty recently (6 months old and still under warranty), and the battery does not charge past 80%. Once it get's near the 80% charge, it immediately fills up to 100%.

I've remembered using the laptop for more than 6 hours under moderate use but now it barely lasts 2 hours.

Please give me some advice because I'm really dependent on this laptop.

Answer:Dell Inspiron 3437 Battery Issue

You have 6 or 8 cells battery. If 6 it's normall. Should work about 2-max 3 hours when new. On 8 cells could work till 5 h.
Producers give only 6 months of warranty on bateries

Inspiron 14z-5423  Hard Disk Drive not found: How to Reseat Drive?
error code 2000-0142
validation 73381

Also, video card for memory has error code of 2000-0332

Much appreciation for info to help me do this, confused and sad.

Answer:Inspiron 14z-4423 Hard Disk Drive not found: How to Reseat Drive?

Hi HEARTLOTUS,
The 0142 error is a HDD failure. This is a smart error and indicates that the HDD is failing or already failed error - see this article for reference - http://dell.to/1NAsADX
So, reseating the HDD will not positively help in this case. If you would like to reseat the HDD anyway and check - download the service manual here - http://dell.to/2d326ia
Also, the 0332 is a video card related error. So, the motherboard needs to be replaced.
Personally, I would suggest you to invest your money on a new machine than to repair this system. However, that is your discretion.
Also, please click my DELL-username and write me a private conversation with the service tag and your Name for case records.
Let us know if you have any other queries.

My Dell Inspiron 3437 ( Core i5, 4th Gen) screen suddenly stopped work couple of days ago, now it just worked for external monitor. What I done for the issue ( I did all works by an external monitor)
1. Taking a Diagnostics for all hardware no problem.
2. Using function key but no help.
3. Flashing new bios ( A10), the computer display worked!  but the screen did not display again when I restarted the computer.
4. I tried re-flash bios, but the bios program won't let me to flash same bios version.
5. I tested the screen on another laptop, it worked perfect.
So I guessed the computer BIOS chip corrupt.
Anybody can help?

Answer:****** Dell inspiron 3437 only works external monitor********

If the system boots to Windows, it's not a BIOS problem.  Check the display settings - if they look correct, but there is no display image, you either have a bad display panel or a bad GPU (i.e., mainboard).  Hold the D key through powerup -- if you do see the built in display test (cycling solid color screens), the display is bad - meaning the mainboard is the problem.  If you don't see that, the display needs to be replaced.

I have a dell inspirion 9100 and I just recently installed a new dvd-ram drive because the old dvd-rw died...
I have a pioneer dvr-k16 and when I boot up it stalls for like 30 seconds now and then flashes "secondary hard disk drive 0 not found". Windows starts up like normal and my drive works, although I've only watched movies so far and haven't tried burning anything. How do I get the error message to go away? I've tried going into setup and that doesn't seem to help anything because I don't know what to do in there. I keep reading on other threads that you have to change the slave to cs or something like that but I have no clue as to how to do any of that or if that would even alleviate my situation. Maybe just a dirty computer? I do have two cats and I have fur balls floating all over the place that I can't seem to get rid of...that's a whole seperate issue of course. HELP?

Answer:secondary hard disk drive 0 not found on a dell laptop what do I do?

The bios in your laptop was set up to use your old drive, the specs on your new drive will be different.

First off, have a look at the drive you took out to see if it was set to master, slave, or cable select. To do this, have a look at the back end of the drive near the connector for the jumper setting, then make sure your new drive is set the same.

Then you need to go into the bios and look for any options to scan for hard drives (this will scan for optical drives too). You need to make sure its set to your new drive and not your old one.

If you don't know how to do any of this the your manual will help, if you don't have it you can probably download one from dell.

If you still have problems then let me know and i will do my best to help further.

Answer:Secondary hard disk drive 0,1 not not found at bootup[dell pc]

Sounds like you have an option in your BIOS to 'halt at everything.' Meaning if there is anything missing or possibly wrong with the system your BIOS will stop making the user press F1 so that they notice was is wrong (or possibly wrong).

If nothing is wrong with the system then just choose the option of 'halt on nothing' or something similar in your BIOS.

100 GB hard drive worked well. One day - it stopped.
"Primary hard disk drive 0 not found
No bootable devices..."

No disks in BIOS are shown now

Same story couple months before that was with another 80GB harddisk.
Several files on drive C (FAT) though were corrupted (CHKDSK corrected that)

"Fun" is:
1) Harddisk works fine if placed into desktop PC, no problems with any diagnostics
2) laptop works fine with small size old 4 GB harddrive

Harddrive connector problem???? BIOS problem with nonstandard size harddisks (DELL sold this notebook only with 60 GB max). Old not supported firmware ?

Dell Customer Support after several diagnoistics by phone only suggested to buy ane more disk and check. But I afraid that most probably it will not work

Somethig similar was here (but guy does not respond)

I've got a new Inspiron 15 a couple of days ago with the following configuration:
Intel core  i7 7700HQ cpu
16GB DDR4
512GB SSD (bios reports M.2 PCIe ssd-0) -- no other hard drive
Graphics card NVidia Geforce GTX 1050 Ti
Screen resolution 3840 x 2160
My problem is that I cannot split the hard disk into 2 partitions nor can i shrink the partition on which windows is installed from within windows. I used both the windows gui (disk management) and the command line program diskpart.
Does anyone have any idea?

Answer:New DELL Inspiron 15 7000 denies to shrink windows installation hard disk drive

It sounds like you might have a 7567 Gaming system.  If so, Windows will shrink a partition if it can. I would not recommend using a third party utility to shrink it since problems could happen and you might lose the system.
If you need another partition, you should have an option to place a 2.5 inch drive in the system for that.

Hard Drive sounds like its bad. Do you have a spare hard drive that you can place into the laptop to see if it detects a healthy hard drive?

I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop and use Windows XP.

Recently, I went to start my laptop and initially, as soon as I pressed the power button, I noticed a strange buzzing noise that accompanied the usual whirring of the fans and start-up drive.

Then, one of two things occur: The window freezes on the boot-up menu and cannot complete, or I am directed to a blank screen with the message, Internal HDD Hard Error, press F1 to re-boot or F2 for setup. Pressing F1 only repeats the message. I went into Setup and did notice a warning for my battery health saying "This Battery can no longer provide sufficient power to your system and needs to be replaced."

So, of course, I will purchase another battery but I also want to make sure that there is no additional course of action I should take.

Please advise! Thanks!

As of a few days ago my internal D:\ (DVD/CD-ROM) drive was not recognizing any discs I put into it. I have 2 external LG Blu-ray portable drives and one of them is now recognized as D:\. How do I fix this so that the Internal DVD/CD-ROM drive is recognized as D:\ again? I have gone into the Device Manager and looked under DVD/CD-ROM Drives and the only ones present are my externals. I have also tried rebooting several times to no avail.

Hallo! I'm posting for a very frustrated friend without internet; she called because at the airport, her computer (A dell latitude d810 ) made a weird noise physically (like a whirry clicky unhappy noise) and while loading made two 'beepbeep noises'.... and then failed to properly boot. She runs Windows XP (though I don't know what service pack) normally, and hadn't made any hardware  or O/S changes, but the error shows as follows:Quoteinternal harddisk drive not found internal hdd hard error!strike f1 key to continue, f2 to run the setup utilityShe says the fan's not starting up - nothing's working. She went into the BIOS interface (which I admit is a bit over my head) and was soon after telling me about another error message --Quoteno bootable device strike f1 to restart f2 to go to setupShe's assuming this is a physical problem, but isn't sure what to do. Can anyone help? Thank you for your time and patience, and sorry for the lack of much information.

Answer: dell latitude d810: internal harddisk drive not found

Hard Drive is crashed...   Data may be lost for goodIf the drive still spins, but clunks/clicks a computer repair shop may be able to sweep the drive to rebuild the data onto a healthy hard drive but this can be costly.More costly is sending the drive out to be deconstructed and reconstructed by a hard drive data recovery center which can be $900 + to get data back.

I tried emailing the guy I bought it from but he hasnt emailed me back the password. I did some searching on google and came up on this website and tried out a couple thread on this website. I tried the debug mode, and the latitude.exe to try and reset the password. the latitude program didnt work because I have a 7 digit service tag and im not sure why the debug mode didnt work but I followed the instructions exactly and the password was still there. Does anyone know if there is another program like the latitude.exe that will work with the 7 digit service tag or do i have to go through dell and get there password reset device. My P.C has started giving an error. "No internal hard disk found". Press F1 to restart F2 to run setup utility F5 to run PSA.When I go to setup utility there sometimes it shows the fixed HDD, and sometimes there is written "None"...When I ran diagnostics, initially it did not give any error about hard disk. But now today diagnostic showed a message that "Hard disk not attached". I have to restart again and again to reach operating system.
Operating system also gave the error thrice "Your P.c have some issues" today the Stop code was Memory management.
What could be the problem....??

Answer:Dell Inspiron 15, Hard disk related issue.

It appears that the HDD (hard disk drive) could be intermittently failing. If you are in the operating system now, you should start saving your data (documents, MP3, pictures, etc.) to a USB HDD. We will need your exact model number to know what HDDs can be installed.

Hi,
I am planning to buy New Dell Inspiron 15 series 7000. I would want to replace the harddisk with SSD by next year or so. But i wanted to know if i can have SSD along with hard disk in this laptop.
I wanted both good performance along with large storage. So i was wondering if i can have two disks at once.
Thanks in advance

Answer:Can i have SSD along with hard disk in New Dell Inspiron 15 series 7000

mSATA and mini-PCI express have the same form factor but are electrically different.   It doesn't look like any of the newer Inspiron 7000 series models have mSATA connectors -- the older 3rd generation ones did, though.
If you want an SSD along with a hard drive, you'll need to consider  an XPS system - not an Inspiron.

Alright, so I have a Dell Latitude D630 laptop that's rather old and has several major problems, including never charging, overheating without a small fan next to it, and the occasional key falling off. Well, I was using it a few nights ago and it was working better than usual. Eventually, I turned it off and went to bed. Nothing unusual happened then, but the next day, when I booted it up, it told me the internal hard drive was missing and suggested I reseat it. I ran a diagnostic and it told me basically the same thing but this time it was accompanied by a happy little tune composed of loud beeps, as if to say: "Ha ha, I have found yet another way to ruin your life by becoming even more of an ungrateful mule than I already am, a feat which you thought was impossible but apparently isn't." As of today, when I try to boot it up, it doesn't even show the Dell logo before turning off. This is naturally a tad miffing, but I hope reseating the hard drive will help. Thing is, I don't know how. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:New Internal Hard Disk Drive Problems

You may have knocked the video card loose when replacing the HDD.
Make sure it's firmly in the slot.

If the PC has a built-in video chip, then make sure all the cables and memory are firmly plugged in.

When you turn it on, does the PC sound like it's turning on? (fans spinning, beeps, etc.)

Hi All,
I just purchased a new internal hard drive (Seagate Barracuda hard drive - 3 TB - SATA-600) to be used for storing data. Installation was simple, and Disk Management noticed it right away, with 1 problem: The free space is 743.48 GB, not the 3000 or so I was expecting. Disk Manager says it is 100% free. So the big question is: Where is all that other disk space?

Thank you!!

Hello everyone!

I have a Dell Studio XPS 1640 laptop and have just run into some major problems. When I boot up it will get as far as the opening loading screen (where it displays the XPS within the circle) and it will freeze up. I then ran the diagnostic and it showed that my system has no hard drive. (meanwhile the hard drive is making some pretty crazy sounds). When I tell the system to boot from the CD it makes it to the loading screen with the side-scrolling green bar at the bottom and it gets stuck in the loading cycle I.e. It keeps going going and going. What might this be caused by and is it a simple fix?

Thanks foe all your time! Any answers/help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi, Recently the Tech guy at my work threw out a bunch of computer towers and other computer parts etc..In amongst all of that was a Dell Inspiron Mini 1012 with no battery or AC adapter. So I took it home and plugged in an AC adapter that met the specs. It powered up and says the following: SMART Failure Predicted on Hard Disk 2
Warning: Immediately back-up you data and replace your hard disk drive. A failure may be imminent. Press F1 to continue.I press F1 and it Starts Windows. It then goes to a screen stating Windows Error Recovery. Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. Then they give you 2 options. Launch Startup Repair (recommended) or Start Windows Normally. I tried both of these without much luck. During the Startup Repair it says Startup Repair cannot repair this computer automatically. Well I know that the problem is obviously the hard drive is corrupt. I will need to replace the hard drive. I have tried to click F8 a ton of times during boot up and it won't get me to that option. I have tried plugging in an external cd/dvd drive and boot from the cd. It cannot get the mini 1012 to boot up that way. I changed the boot sequence to boot up from cd drive first. I don't understand why the F8 function won't work. Also during the System Recovery option I got it to a screen stating: To access recovery options, log on as a local user. To access the command prompt as well, log on using an administrator account. Usern... Read more

Try the Dell diagnostics

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/inspd530/en/OM/HTML/trouble.htm#wp1081896

There are several ways to run them. Read carefully. Also note the section "Dell Diagnostics Main Menu"

If Diagnostics do not run from the hard drive, and you do not have the Drivers and Utilities Media, you can download the diagnostics software and create a bootable CD or flash drive to run the diagnostics. Read the "Installation Instructions" on the page I linked to below.

http://support.dell.com/support/dow...typeid=-1&dateid=-1&formatid=-1&fileid=265259

When you download the file, and you get a download options window, choose "Download via your Internet Browser"

The hard drive on my Son's Dell Inspiron 1520 packed up and he had a new drive fitted by a local repair shop. It then worked OK.Now after a couple of months the machine is reporting that it can not recognise the hard drive. My church has a Dell Inspiron 8100 that it uses only for the lyrics to the praise and worship songs on the overhead, via PowerPoint. It never goes online.
It used to by it's previous owner, but it was given to us and I cleaned all spy/mal/ad-ware out of it and virus checked it.

It was running great until one day when they called me frantically saying it wouldnt boot up.
So I brought it home and sure enough, 2 hours it took to boot up and another 20 mins or so to open each program, or Windows Explorer, etc.

Finally as the night wore on, and it got hot, it ran great. I thought that by emptying all of the junk out of it, that's what fixed it. Booted, rebooted, opened a bunch of programs (at the same time) and it ran great.

Shut down, went to bed.....
the next morning I tried to boot up.... again with the 2 hours.
It was about 4 hours before it was running smoothly
PLUS, it's beginning to click loudly.

I copied all of the powerpoint presentations to my flash drive for safe keeping and I'm thinking I need to replace the hard drive.

Dell wants $180 so before I tell them that's what they need, I wanted to make sure that's what they needed......
so I came HERE !!!

You guys know EVERYTHING !!!!

If it is the hard drive clicking it is going out, but 180 is to high for a hard drive you can find them at your local retailer with pretty good rebate offers, need to find out from Dell if you replace it yourself if you can use their system restore disk to reinstall OS, i think the only way they won't let you use the disk if the motherbord has changed, better to find out for sure

Hi, I recently went to turn on my computer, and it loaded the Dell logo and then simply had a blank screen. I restarted it a few times, and tried taking out the battery and replacing it, as well as restarting while charging. None of that worked, so I ran diagnostics and the only thing it's telling me is that the hard drive is not detected. It says Hard Drive 0 instead of what it should say, which is Hard Drive C, I believe. Also, I did some testing on the memory, and now there is just a red x by the memory instead of a green check mark, like most of the other items have.My computer is a Dell Inspiron, running on Windows 7.

Answer:Dell Inspiron not recognizing hard drive

If you have 1 hard drive...it is hd0. 0 being the first number in computer terms. hd 1, would be a 2nd hard drive. So, that part seems right. How many ram modules are in this computer? If there more than 1, take them all out except one and then see if the computer boots, if not, take out that stick (powered off) and put in one of the other sticks, and try and to boot up the computer. See what that does for you.

I had a laptop brought to me and I diagnosed it as a bad hard drive. The owner has bought two replacements, one from Amazon and one from Newegg. Both of these replacements slide in, but they do not connect to the ports at all. The original hard drive firmly slides and and you can feel it slide into place. The two replacements I have tried are both Toshiba brand.

Both the original hard drive and the new hard drives look identical, but the original seems to be thicker by a fraction of an inch.

The model # on the laptop is PP41L. I've tried the Dell website by typing in the service tag. They have every replacement part under the sun except for the hard drive for this model.

I worked on a similar laptop a few years ago and was able to buy the replacement directly from Dell. Same model as the one I am working on now.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Answer:Dell Inspiron 1545 Hard Drive

You need to pay attention to the drive thickness. Newer laptops use 9.5mm thick drives while older used 12.5mm thick drives. You need to check the thickness under the drive specifications when ordering a drive. I believe all current shipping models of 2.5 inch drives are 9.5mm but can't say that for sure. My guess is that the drives the owner bought were bargain drives that were being sold inexpensively because they were older drives.

The 9.5mm drives I've purchased actually came with a spacer so they could be used for laptop's requiring a 12.5mm. No clean way to adapt a 12.5mm drive for a laptop that is designed for a 9.5mm.

This is first post, so please excuse any display of ignorance from me.

I know that the hard drive is bad. It will not let me boot up to try and recover data. Last resort is to send to a data recovery specialist.

If the drive is cool, it will try to boot, but it is looking for a corrupted file, "ntoskrnl.exe" in the \System32 dir (Win 2000 Pro). Is there a way I can transfer this file onto the drive?

I have tried to Repair with the Dell reinstall CD, it does not work. It hangs up during the checking C:\ drive portion. I tried it under the Console Recovery and same thing. Also tried the "fixboot"; it did not do anything for me.

Any Suggestions?

Your help is appreciated.

Hello!  It looks like your hard drive is/has gone bad.  You will need to replace it.  Depending on where you live, there should be computer repair shops in your city/town that can help you.  Dell might be able to do it but it would cost a bit more as your computer is more then likely out of warranty.

No, you cannot add hard drives to a laptop. Yes, you can copy the 40GB contents to the 80GB using an adapter or an USB enclosure and possibly a desktop computer.

Restarted the laptop, as asked and all I get is the bar with the green loading blocks, with the microsoft incorporation underneath it, and it does this for hours. It doesnt load anything?

Not only have a lost 4 years of data, now this new one wont work. I really need any advice, to sort this. Im not currently working and i cant afford a heavy bill to take it to someone.

[email addr. removed by mod] - if anyone can help me!

many thanks guys.....

Hi,I have what I think is a noisy hard drive on my Dell.I read somewhere how to check if its a fan issue or a hard drive issue is to disconnect it and switch the pc on? I did this and it wasn't making this annoying noise! A friend has given me a Western Digital WD500AADS which came out of a Virgin Tivo box and I'm wondering whether I can swap these? I hope so as the noisy drive is a Seagate 200 gb so I would be getting more memory. Also I did try connecting this new drive in place of the old drive but nothing came up on my monitor? Any help would be very helpful.
Thanks.

Answer:Swapping hard drive on a Dell Inspiron 546 MT.

click here is this your machine?
thought it came with a 1TB drive.
you need to connect the new drive as well as the old one, then use something like Macrium Refect (free) to clone the old drive to the new one. then put the cloned drive in place of the old one and check it boots.

Can anyone direct me to info on installing a second hard drive to Inspiron 3847 computer for purposes of image back up using Acronis True Image Home software back up? There is space for an optical drive which is totally foreign to me, but nothing is said anywhere in the material in users manual about adding second hard drive which seems to be a pretty normal hardware addition. Not savvy in these matters.

Thanks

Answer:Second Hard Drive Dell Inspiron 3847

toplap
Dell has not published the procedures for installing an additional SATA hard drive, the Inspiron 3847 has a second 3.5" bay, for the second hard drive next to the primary hard drive, there should be a set of rails located in the bay, two 6-32X1/4, phillips head screws are needed, to attach the rails.
The procedures on pages 26 to 28 of the owners manual should give you an idea of what is required for the installation.
http://ftp.dell.com/Manuals/all-products/esuprt_desktop/esuprt_inspiron_desktop/inspiron-3847-desktop_Owner%27s%20Manual_en-us.pdf
You will need a SATA data cable there should be a spare SATA power connector inside the case. After installing the drive enter the system setup and check that the hard drive is 'enabled' [on] and recognized.
For Windows to recognize the second hard drive, it must be partitioned and formatted.Go to Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management, Storage, Disk Management, right click new drive, select format, then you can assign a drive letter.Bev.

My computer hit the floor last night and since has been showing hard drive not found anf no boot able devices found.. I have tried everything please help

Answer:Dell inspiron 15 hard drive problem

Hi MrsStik87, and welcome to TSG.

Sounds like the hard drive may have been damaged in the fall. Whether or not any data can be recovered off of it would depend on the severity of the damage.

How high was the fall and what kind of surface did the computer land on? Was is turned on at the time of the fall?

I believe my Dell Inspiron 6000 has Ultra ATA. I wanted to upgrade my hard drive since it is kind of slow but I basically just want a cheap and fast hard drive. Could anyone recommend one for me?

Also, would i be able to use a SATA hard drive on my laptop or would I have to stick to Ultra ATA? thanks

Answer:Hard Drive for Dell Inspiron 6000

You probably have to stay with Ultra ATA as the connector is built-in the the board.
If your drive is 4500 or 5400 RPM you can probably see an improvement by getting a 7200 RPM drive.
There are several here:

Hi,
Our 580 MT is 6 years old so time to instal a new Hard Drive before the original shows any signs of failing.
I have a Seagate 1 TB SSHD to become the main drive (& keep the original - now 6 year old - HDD in place as a Data Drive),
My plan is to put the new drive in the second Bay, clone the Drive, & then simply swap the SATA cables so the "new" drive becomes the Main drive without having to alter anything in the BIOS
Of course this requires a third SATA cable attached to the Motherboard
I checked inside the Tower today, & as should be, two of the SATA sockets are in use, (Numbered 1 & 2)
Sorry for what might be a Dumb Question, but although the sockets marked 1, 2, & 4 are black in colour, number 3 is white - is there any significance to this?

Thanks in advance for any answers!

Hello
My trusty Packard Bell gave up the ghost 2 months ago and the Pc Docs told me the mother board had burnt out but the hard drive (80GB) was ok and he saved my docs to a flash drive and I bought a new Inspiron 660S with
Intel dual core i3-2120.
Processor speed 3.3GHz.
4GB DDR3 RAM.
Hard drive:
1000GB SATA hard drive.
I know the old hard drive wouldn't fit into the new Dell as the new pc is a compact size but how would it be possible to connect the old hard drive to the new Dell? is it possible to be able to use it for backing up files etc even if it has to 'live outside' sort of thing?
Thanks for any advice.

Answer:Dell Inspiron + External Hard Drive

There is no reason why the old (very old) 80 Gb hard-drive should not fit in the new PC as hard-drive are pretty much a standard size for a desktop: 3.5" and 2.5"for a laptop. We now have 2.5"SSD hard-drives but I wwould worry about them.
I suspect that your 80Gb hard- drive has an IDE connection and your new PC will have Sata which would mean connecting to the new PC a little tricky.
So I suggest getting an external hard-drive caddy which will take IDE and Sata. Something like this. Caddy. It will be just a case of undoing a couple of screws sliding your HDD in connecting power and data cable to it, putting the face plate back on then plugging it into your PC with the supplied USB cable. It should be automatically seen by Windows and hopefully you will be good to go.

The hard drive in our Inspiron 600M Laptop died... Dell told me that only this one certain drive was compatible with that system at a cost of $240 for 60GB. My question is, wouldn't any hard drive work in that machine as long as it matched the physical dimensions and had the correct interface which is ATA/100 (ATA-6)???

Thanks!!!

Answer:Dell Inspiron 600M Hard Drive

Unless Dell was producing/inserting some kind of revolutionary hard drives in 2005, and I doubt they were, your laptop uses an Ultra ATA hard drive - run with it.

If in doubt, remove the bad one and look - what harm can THAT do, right?

I need to replace a hard drive in a Dell Inspiron 9100. Have never done this on a laptop. How hard is it?

Answer:Dell Inspiron 9100 Hard Drive

Just did my first one myself. The physical removal of the drive? Easy. Google will show you tutorials, but typically it is about 4 screws to access the drive, 4 screws to unbolt the drive and slide it out, reverse.

That said, call Dell. Some laptops have the operating system or the computers BIOS on the drive, so unless you have the tools to image the drive and copy it to the new drive, you want to ask Dell if you can buy any laptop drive. I bought a hard drive to USB for about 20 bucks, it plugs any hard drive into your computers USB port so you can access it. Of course, I was fixing a friends dead Sony Vaio laptop and the drive was dead and could not copy the data, Sony charges $199.00 for a $80 dollar drive because it comes with XP and recovery. No, I wont buy a Sony laptop again, 200 for a 4 year old laptop drive is unacceptable.

Good luck, let us know how you make out.

I actually tried to reload Win 7 from the start and once it came to which drive to install it on....nothing was there? I don't believe the hard drive is toast at least I hope not. Please what can I do?

I have an Inspiron 660 desktop that I bought at the end of 2012.  Last week I had a hard-disk drive failure. I purchased a Toshiba 3.5 inch 2TB SATA 7.2k RPM HDD thru Dell. After installing the new hard drive, I tried loading a brand new version of Windows 10 Pro from USB. During the Windows 10 install,  I got an error message saying there was no device drives found. I also got an error message saying hard drive locked, please unlock and try again.  I have no idea how to fix this issue and get Windows 10 up and running on my computer. Does anybody know how to fix this issue (with step by step instructions)? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

I've had this problem with a few disks actually--disks with media burned on them (I think QuickTime format), but for whatever reason DVDs either work immediately or take only one or two tries before succeeding.

I am trying to install a legit student copy of MATLAB, the disk is brand new but does somehow have one or two scratches, very minor. Usually the drive tries to read the disk for maybe 30 seconds before giving up, occasionally it spins without any sign of stopping until I pop the disk out when it starts to get hot. Clicking on the drive in the 'my computer' menu just tells me I need to insert a disk into the drive.

All of my drivers should be up to date. Also, for the record, the disk is fine and will run on other computers, just like the previous disks it's been unable to read.

Any suggestions?

Answer:Dell Inspiron 1521 DVD RW drive will not read MATLAB install disk

Sounds like a bad disk drive. I had a dell Inspiron 1720 that would do the same thing. I finally gave up on it and bought an external DVD drive and it worked fine. You could try ordering a replacement DVD drive from Dell.

I suggested a friend's old P3 Dell Inspiron may be quicker running Ubunto. I repartioned and formatted the hard drive before realising there was no CD player. How do I now reinstall an OS? The hard drive connection is not the same as my Dell Lattitude so I can't swop drives. I've tried USB supporting boot disks but still can't access USB devices. Is there any other way to install Ubunto or other OS?
I've tried Duse boot and an Iomega version. USB is assigned a drive letter but when I run DOSUSB.COM (part of the booting routine) the system hangs.
How do I restore the machine?

Answer:Dell Inspiron has no CD drive and I have formatted hard drive

Ubuntu is an excellent free operating system
But you removed the Partition? How did you remove it? With a floppy disk? because that would seem very strange

Obviously No.1 is to get a working CD or DVD Drive installed (he'll probably need it for other stuff too )
And then >> chat with Dell to see if you can get the Windows Recovery Disc from them (although "P3" is very doubtful that it exists)

Hi,
My dell inspiron 14z 5423 no longer have sound from both the speakers and the earphone jack.
This happened after I replaced the Battery and also the hard disk from 500gb to 1TB and upgraded to windows 10.
Before this, I was using Windows 8.1 and everything was working well. I have returned it back to windows 8.1 but the no audio problem still persist.
Also, my speaker symbol on the task bar shows a "cross" sign with "no audio output installed" displaying when I hover on the speaker icon.
Please I need help. have tried all options i can think of including driver updates.
One more thing, the sound driver are not showing up on the device manager window where other drivers are displayed.

Thanks

Answer:No Sound From Speaker & Headphone Jack On my Dell Inspiron 14z 5423 After Chnaging BAttery and Hard Disk

pizzz4allthe sound driver are not showing up on the device manager window where other drivers are displayed.
Hello. Download this Win8.1 IDT audio driver for the Inspiron 14z 5423. There are two versions there -- get the one that says "File Format Hard Drive". Follow the installation instructions and see if the driver shows up in Device Manager.
If it doesn't, perform the PSA or ePSA sound test. If no sound during the test then there has been hardware failure. Could have happened during parts replacement.

Help! I have a Dell Inspiron 8100 laptop which is probably around five years old. For the last couple of days it has been turning itself off and today it won?t boot up at all. The Dell welcome screen appears and then a black screen with white writing appears which states: Primary hard disk drive not found. Fixed optical drive nor found. No bootable devices. Strike F1 to retry boot. F2 for set-up utility. (At the second screen it goes BEEP BEEP). I use it mainly for recording magazines for the blind and have a number of hours which I need to get off. The hard drive is divided into two partitions. Does it mean that the hard drive has failed and, if so, is it possible to get the data off the second partition? Thank you.

Answer:Dell Inspiron Hard Drive Problem - Failure?

It does sound like the HD has gone kaputt. You could have a look at the connections to make sure that they are Ok but if the disk has gone there is very little chance of recovering anything unless you go to the professionals who charge 1500 upwards. You could put the OS disk in or borrow an XP disk to see if you can access the recovery feature You could try taking it out, putting it into an HD enclosure and connecting by USB to another machine to see if there is anything in it. If anything this illustrates the importance of backups.G

I have a Dell Inspiron 531S with Vista Home Premium that just quit working. Literally.
What it does is when you start it it goes to the first "page" with Dell's logo and website and then when it goes to the next one like it usually would it stays black although it's still on. I took it to a local pc repair shop and they said that the hard drive is bad. I was wondering if you guys have any ideas.

Answer:Dell Inspiron 531S possible hard drive problem.

You can test the drive yourself using a diagnostic disc.

In order to test the hard drive you can run one of the diagnostic programs below. The files, in ISO format, will need to be burned to a CD using a program that can burn CD image files.

I recently turned on my Dell Inspirion N5050 with Windows 7 Home Premium and received a several  codes on a black screen:
"PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM
Reboot and Select proper Boot device or insert boot media and press key."
Pressing any key just causes a loop where the same screen appears.

Any ideas what is wrong and how to fix it?
Thanks,

My hard drive is not detected.  It says a read disk error occured whenever i try to boot it up.  I have an external hard drive as well but i have no idea how to get though the boot up to access it.  thanks!

Answer:Dell Inspiron 1525 Hard Drive not detected.

Hello bmcvicker13.
Welcome to the community.
If the Hard drive on your computer is not getting detected I would suggest you try to load the BIOS defaults and see if that helps. To Load the defaults you need to try the following steps.
Power off the computer.
Power on the computer and as soon as you power it on start tapping the F2 key.
Once you have entered the System Setup screen look for Load Defaults (The option to load defaults would be different for different models. F9 works for some models else you would have an option to Load Defaults). If you can provide the System model I can provide you the exact steps.
Also if the Hard drive is not detected there is no way to access it before it gets detected by the computer.
Please let me know what happens if you successfully load the BIOS defaults and if the Hard drive is still not detected you may need to re-seat it.

Hello,
I have a Dell Inspiron 5100, P2.4, 768Meg ram. It originally came with a 30 Gig 5400RPM HD. After the drive failed on me, I purchased a Toshiba Travelstar 80 Gig 7200 RPM. Well, the Dell won't support 7200 RPM drives according to Dell tech support, and it would get so hot it shut down intermittantly. I have now purchased a 5400RPM 80 gig drive and need to clone the 7200 to the 5400. The 7200 still works , just unstable. Anyone know of any reliable freeware to clone one drive to the other so I can go back to the 5400RPM. I was told by Dell this will eliminate the overheating problem and stabilize the machine. Everything else works great. Thanks for any advice!

Hello,

For protecting against and removing Viruses, Torjans, Worms etc...

Avast! Antivirus v4.7 Home is entirely free. You can get it here:

http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

Alternatively, AVG Antivirus is also free:

I prefer Avast! than AVG. No specific reason...I just prefer the look.

For removing Adware and Spyware...

Spybot Search & Destroy is a free, very popular program:
