I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am having a very strange problem with my new X1 Carbon 2015.  Intermittently it will not turn off after being in sleep for a while. Pushing the power button does nothing, there is no light from the fingerprint reader of Fn key etc. At first i thought it has just run out of power, but when it booted up it had full battery. When it happens i found that i can connect the AC cord for 1 second, hit the power button and then immediatly disconnect the AC cord, and still have it boot up nicely with full battery. It seems there is some kind of powerstrapping issue? Has anyone encountered this problem before?  Its really hard to debug this issue, as i havent found exactly what the repro steps are, sometimes it will power up fine, other times not. Because of this i am also somewhat hesistant to get a tech. out to look at it, as i might not be able to repro it.

Answer:X1 Carbon 2015 not turning on without AC cord (but cable can be immediatly disconnected)

Just wanted to mention that i tried the reset pin-button and it didnīt do anything. I dont think the machine is hanging in any way, its just not getting power. I just updated the BIOS on the off chance if might help.

Can the new X1 put out 4k @ 60hz over dp?What about with the Onelink pro dock? As this supports dp 1.2 I assumed 4k @ 60hz would not be a problem, however the manual says that only 2560x1600 @ 60hz work.Is this confirmed? Or was Lenovo just being cautious due to the fact that many Haswell processors can't output 4k @ 60hz?Thanks

Answer:Will the new X1 Carbon (2015) put out 4k @ 60hz?

I'd like to know this as well. I have the 2014 X1 Carbon and want to connect it to my Dell 3415 (3440x1400). Would it work either via the mini DP port or via the OneLinkPro? Intel 4400 and 5000 should support ultra HD resolutions at least according to Intel specs.

I have the 2015 Carbon X1 and want to replace the existing 120GB SSD with the Samsung XP941 512GB. Can someone walk me through, or provide a link to the process of installing the Windows 7 on the new SSD? I know that the SSD is compatible, and know how to swap the drives.  Do I create a system recovery USB through Windows on the old SSD and boot from it with the new SSD installed, or do I need to clone the existing SSD to the new SSD. I currently have Windows 7 installed through downgrade rights in Windows 8.1.  All I want to do is have a "fresh" / "factory installed" version of Windows 7 on the new SSD. Thanks!

Answer:Upgrade SSD on 2015 X1 Carbon

You have the right idea: with the original M.2 stick still in the machine, create a recovery USB drive.  Then shutdown, swap the sticks, and boot the recovery USB drive you made; do a full re-install.  This will result in a from-factory configuration, complete with recovery and hibernate partitions on your new blazing-fast M.2 SSD. Note that it is very difficult to clone these PCIe-connected M.2 drives - you can't boot the originally installed drive as a USB drive, and you can't readily connect the PCIe M.2 SSD to a USB port.  (I have heard of a device to mount the PCIe M.2 drive to a USB port, but have never seen one in the wild.)  There are PCIe cards for desktop computers that can take the PCIe M.2 drives, so that's the alternate approach. -frank

I have a Toshiba Portege into which I installed a Samsung 840 EVO MZ-MTE1T0BW 1TB mSATA SSD, and it has been running fine for months. It replaced a similar unbranded 128GB SSD. On order I have a Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon with a 128GB SSD. Is there any reason I can't re-image the 1TB drive from the Toshiba and install it in the Lenovo?

Good day and welcome to the community.
Congrats on choosing a Carbon3.

The SSD in the machine is an m.2 2280 format card. The MZ-MTE1T0BW SSD you have is mSATA format, so it won't slot, nor will it fit width/length-wise.

I bought a fully decked out Thinkpad Carbon x1 with a 3 year warranty from Lenovo for only $2,200. Just a tip: if you order via the chat feature on the website you get some incredible savings. Basically the warranty was free.
If you own an x1 carbon 2015, what are your thoughts on the machine, what configuration do you have?
How does windows 10 run on it? I know that Daniel Rubino posted how it runs for him, but looking for more feedback.
I look forward to your responses and I will sure post mine once I receive it :)

Hi all DisplayportThe X1 Carbon 3rd generation (X1 3rd Gen) sports a mini 1.2 displayport (1.2 mDP). The 1.2 DP standard supports daisy chaining of monitors using multi stream transport (MST). Does this mean the X1 3rd Gen is good to power two 1.2 displayport capable monitors using just the 1.2 mDP? What about the internal / built-in display, can it be driven at the same time as two external monitors? If it is not possible with the mDP alone, is it possible to have all three (internal + 2x external) monitors driven by using the HDMI port also?MemoryIs the 8GB memory limit due the lack of  >8GB modules - i.e. there is no 16Gb modules for thsi kind of use?Changing keyboardIs the keyboard a Customer Replaceable Part (CRU)? I'm about the place an order for the X1 Carbon 3rd. gen. with non-touch QHD display, which will replace my trusted X301. I'm wondering which version of Windows I should choose. Would I miss out on any important features by going for Win 7 (which would be my natural choice) instead of 8.1? For instance, would scaling program icons and text, or graphics performance, be better implementated in 8.1 than in 7?

Can anyone confirm which Samsung PCIe SSD is being incorporated into the 2015 X1 Carbon? If it's the SM951 version, the US$700 upcharge for the 512GB SSD could possibly be justifiable. If it's the XP941, not so much. Not that the XP941 is bad, but the SM951 is reportedly about twice as fast and uses less power.

I manually put the system to sleep via the Start menu (or whatever it's called now).  Usually, when I come back and hit the power button, it resumes just fine.  But it seems that every now and then, it gets totally stuck.  The green light on the power button is blinking slowly, but the machine won't respond at all.  I press the power button, press the enter button, do everything I can think of, but it stays off.  This happens on battery and on AC.  It's not easily reproducible; it's done it maybe two or three times in the past week that I've had it.  I'm looking for some pattern but haven't found it.   The only resolution I've found is to hold down the power button until I get full power off.  Then I can boot from scratch, losing anything I had open at the time of the sleep.  Any ideas?

Answer:X1 Carbon 2015 won't wake from sleep

I've had this too...seems to me to be a Windows 8.1 issue.  Frustrating, especially coming from a MacBook Air which is pretty flawless in the reliability, dependability and battery life department.

Hello everyone, As proposed by my products update scan, I downloaded and installed the current Intel HD5500 graphic card driver. But it cannot be configured via the Intel graphic card control panel . The control panel doesn't show up (But its executable exists under C:\WINDOWS\system32\GfxUIEx.exe). I cannot run it from the start menu and it is missing from the context menu on the desktop. I tried reinstalling the driver, but couldn't get it to work. So, my question is: where can I get the old graphic card drivers for my laptop, since they don't show up on the download page anymore? Cheers,Patrick

All images (especially the small ones) and icons from internet and some applications have very bad quality as if they had very low resolution. For example, all avatars on Facebook look really bad, I can hardly recognize people. The same holds for all logos and banners with text images. I understand that the images get distorted because of extremely high resolution of the display (2560x1440) - by the way normal text and all Windows images have excellent clarity - however I can hardly beleive that a 2000 EUR machine is not able to provide appropriate image quality even for simle internet surfing! Is that a fact you have to accept when having 2560x1440 or is it somehow possible to get normal image quality? (Otherwise I'll return the laptop).

Answer:Bad quality of web images X1 Carbon 2015

Here is a screen shot of how it looks like when you open private modus in IE.At the top you see the blue block [InPrivate] in excellent quality and at the bottom you see how the same thing is displayed when it's an image. Actually both should look the same.

Dear Lenovo, I hope that someone from your company does read this.I'm an avid fan of the thinkpad line which began with my 1.6ghz x301.Currently, the screen is cracked, the bezel cracked, corners crunched in, all of my fault of course. I've seen it drop from 5 feet in the air by an unsuspecting bus attendant. I've seen it crushed in bags filled with books and yet it endured the abuse. For this I'm greatly thankful, but I just can't buy your x1 right now. I'm willing to purchase your $2000+ laptop, but just not this one. I loved the x301 keyboard. Till this day, I go to bestbuy just to type on other keyboards, because I have the satisfaction fo knowing my x301 is the boss when it comes to action and feel. Even right now, it is. I see so many upgrades from the x1, but the keyboard is a minus. Please stop thinking about profit and loss and start thinking about QUALITY and LOYALTY. In the long run, you'll make more money that way. I almost feel like the keyboard has become cheap and feels just like any other laptop keyboard out there. Don't lose the user experience that all thinkpad veterans are looking for. It's the only reason that we stick with you guys. Remember, a computer is a computer now and days. I can find better specs, better resolution, better anyone with time and money, but the reason I loved Thinkpad was the quality of the user experience. I'm here because I realllllly want to buy another x series laptop. I'm even will... Answer:Any news on the X1 Carbon 2015 refresh?

I agree it's not a 1 person rant - but I would assume that most just stay quiet. It's exactly the same issue here. I've been using Thinkpads ever since 1998. In 2013 I bought a X1Carbon which is quite nice (apart from the changed keyboard layout and the squeaking buttons on the trackpad) Anyway, after 1 year I  wanted to buy the new model X1 Carbon new and pass my current model on to my family - that's how I usually do it. The older models find their way from me to the family and have a nice life there. I went to a shop in my city to have a look at the new X1C a few weeks back and I was... shocked. 1) The keyboard layout is a nightmare -> remember the times when you had a layout like on a standard desktop keyboard. The change to the 6- line mayout was already a step back - but the new one is just awful2) What you call "adaptive keys row" is just not usable. Sorry, simple as that. I have seen a lot of reviews - but not one positve comment on that.3) I must admit the look of the new mousepad looks impressive. Also I think the mechanics how the whole pad is pressed looks nice. But again here - you can't really use it if you use the trackpoint. I even thought about buying a T440s for my wife now already - but the issue with the screens (AUO vs LG) and the same trackpad as in the X1C stopped me from doing so. So currently I will wait for 2015. Please - I'd like to stay with Thinkpads but not with the above mentioned drawbacks. M_CL

Today I tried to present a talk using my new X1 Carbon, and I found that nothing happened when I plugged in the HDMI cable to the projector. I used Fn-F7, tried duplicate screen, extend screen, etc, as well as the control panel, but nothing worked. When I restarted the computer it worked, but obviously that is not a solution. Has anyone else experienced this, or have any ideas what can be done to make it recognize an HDMI connection?

1. I would like to connect X1 Carbon 2015 to 2 external monitors: 27' (2560x1440) and 24' (1920x1200). Can it be done by connecting them to mini Displayport and HDMI on the laptop itself simultaneously (provided, of course, the monitors have the necessary ports)? 2. If yes, than can I also connect the Carbon to OneLink Pro Dock, still using these 2 ports (my understanding is that connecting 2 monitors through the OneLink Pro Dock with these resolutions is impossible). So, the minimum requirement for me is the use of the 2 above monitors. To enjoy the advantages of OneLink Pro Dock is also preferrable.Thank you.

Hi, I just unpacked my shiny new X1 Carbon 2015, after having been a very happy X1 Carbon first gen user, and boy is it nice... up to the point where I connect my second monitor. It seems that my monitor has a resolution of 1920 x 1080, which was good enough for the first generation X1, but with this new laptop it is now saying "Your resolution is lower than 1920 x 1440, blah, blah". I am guessing because the laptop primary display operates at 2560 x 1440, it is probably concerned that if you drag something onto the monitor it will potentially drop off the sides. Now here is the weirdest thing though. The secondary monitor currently has some really weird behaviors...Most windows that I drag over actually resize right at the point where you drag it from the primary to secondary monitor, but Internet Explorer for instance is not 100% comfortable. The address bar, tabs and favorite bars are really blown up, probably font 24 or something, whereas the main body of IE where the page is displayed is fine.Same with tooltips when you hover over links, context menus, etc. They are all massive compared to the content of windows. What I reckon is that Windows 8.1 is trying to deal with the ratio issue by dynamically adjust windows content, but does not have the ability to do this with screen entities such as the status bars of windows, tooltips or context menus. Anyway, my question really is twofold:1. why is this setup not working well for my X1 2015, but worked... Hi everyone using X1C3 The device is advertised to last for 10 hours on battery, I understand these statistics are usually calculated with minimal usage and thus usually overrated, but my X1C3 lasts only about 5 hours (web browsing on text rich no graphic websites, screen brightness at 80%, no external device connected or powering, always on USB turned off, operating in room temperature). Can any one tell me if this is normal? Its also my first time using Windows 8.1 so is there something in windows 8.1 eating battery life that I should be aware of?? Thanks guys!

Answer:X1 Carbon 2015 battery life

It depends on the combination of the parts chosen for the X1 Carbon Gen 3. Some parts use more or less power, adding more powerful components in the configuration also reduces battery life *slightly*. 5-6 hours is what you should expect.

Hi Akjs,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

This kind of issue might also occur if the graphic driver version is incorrect. To verify it go to start and type ?Device Manager? and double click on that to open, expand graphic adapter and right click on it go properties, click on drivers tab to get the driver version.

To update the system drivers & application you can use ThinkVantage system update utility.

Hope this helps.

Hi everyone, This is driving me nuts now..  For a few months I was happily using the fingerprint scanner to login to my X1 carbon Gen3 under windows 10, a function called Windows Hello. After I did a system reset last week, Windows hello no longer shows in my sign in options.  Things I have tried:- Added a pin for my account- Updated the driver for the fingerprint scanner- Uninstalled and re-installed the fingerprint scanner driver multiple times The fingerprint scanner is there in the device manager but Windows hello is still not showing up. Any idea please?

Answer:X1 Carbon 2015 - Windows Hello not showing

I have been having the same problem since the last update was pushed out for Windows 10 Pro. I did not reset anything as I was hoping that a fix would get pushed out, but it is very annoying to say the least. My fingerprint scanner lights up at boot and then goes dark when I attempt to use it. I can go in and add and remove fingerprints through settings so it has to be something with the Windows Hello and not the scanner itself.

Just got the x1 for loan for my company.  They made several improvements.-Delete and backspace are not on the same button/location anymore.-Trackpad is not as clicky happy and feels like my mac air now, which is perfect imho.  I can do 2 finger scrolling on it (probalby had it in the past but i haded the trackpad so much i never used it) Negatives:-keyboad doesnt have a backlit (maybe its just this model i got?)-no light to shine down on keyboard so you better know your keys-screen does not auto dim when you go to a darker environment (unless there is a setting i am missing)-no sd card reader The above negatives are all working be default on my mac air. Send me any questions you might have.

Answer:2015 X1 Carbon Initial Review

Another negative, even though the native resolution is 1920x1080, many applications do not scale that way and it makes them appear blurry.  Even the lenovo solution center application is blurry.  Remote desktop is also blurry which is my primary use to my desktop.  If anyone knows of a way to fix this, please let me know.  Ill also reach out to my Lenovo rep.  I have the 2014 and 2015 models side by side and noticed the following:They got rid of the changing FN/F1 keys on top and now back to standard buttons.  I perfer this. The home/end key is not on the left anymore.  Its back to the top right next to the function keys.FN key is returned back to bottom left .Print screen key is now between alt + ctrl on the right side of the keyboard.

So I've read many comments regarding the X1 Carbon 2015 models SD Card Reader missing. Or is it missing really? Also many people compared it to the Macbook Pro and pointed out that it still has one. The way I see it, the Apple solution has a card reader because that is a big convenience for some of the target audience of that machine. As you might know cameras and such store their data on cards and people who use cameras alot tend to prefer Macbook Pro more so than any ultrabook (or even Macbook Air for that matter) due to some extra horsepower in case they do video or photo editing etc. It needs to be portable, last long on batteries and have a little punch. So few ultrabooks have this and in such a premium package and that is why it is popular. I have a similar reason to look at X1 Carbon, it is portable and now with 5th gen even more powerful with a 1440p screen and premium build. I don't care about MacOS so I ruled out the Macbook and that leaves me with very few options in terms of powerful ultrabook-ish solutions one of which is X1 Carbon. I might opt for a Razer Blade 2015 refresh if it becomes available soon due to similar reasons and I don't even require the extra gaming power as this will be my work laptop. (I am a self employed programmer) I think outside of testing once or twice, I have never ever used the SD Card readers on the laptops I owned. Most, no sorry ALL of the devices that use a card as storage, also provide means to connec... Read more

Answer:X1 Carbon 2015 - About SD Card Reader

I find the whining bizarre and ridiculous-and if you actually look, the overwhelming majority of posts about it are from one or two individuals. They just make so many posts that it seems like an issue. It's not. Most people never use it. I know I haven't. This is just the classic case of internet amplification.  As you mention, removing the card vs. connecting a USB cable? seems like a no-brainer. As far as trading it for an HDMI port? I'm all for that, since I use an HDMI cable almost every day to run an external monitor. If one really needs an SD card reader, the new XPS13 looks like a great option. I'm too wedded to the trackpoint and Lenovo keyboard personally, but otherwise it looks like a great machine.

I recently imported the X1 Carbon from the US, it doesn't have an international warranty. The FHD screen on this laptop is just too painful to use, white appear yellowish, view angles are really bad, even if its infront of me, the screen is relatively brighter on the bottom. All that combined makes it really problematic to use this laptop. So I am wondering if its possible to replace the FHD screen with the QHD (non-touch), has anyone else tried that previously ? If its possible can any one please tell a way on how I can purchase the QHD lcd. Thanks!

Answer:X1 Carbon (3rd Gen, 2015) replacing FHD screen with QHD

as long IPS screens have same connector size and width it will work but if full hd has one shape/wide size and QHD has diffirent then answer would be no you cannot change from FHD to QHD due to cable/connector is diffirent.

Apparently Windows 10, and I don't know for how long before that, has had a feature that when you change Scroll Lock / Num Lock key settings there is a notification that flashes on the screen. I have never used these keys and so have never noticed this annoyance before.

However, due to an update in VirtualBox which saves and restores the state of these keys between virtual machines and the Windows Host, I now see these notifications and they are very very annoying. Especially if you are capturing a screen shot.

As you can see from this screenshot of a virtual machine window, it's trashed by the windows 10 overlay. It took me sometime to prove to myself that the problem is the interaction between the VM in virtualbox and Windows 10. I'm not suggesting that this is VirtualBox fault, since someone probably wants the key settings saved / restored in the VM. And I'm not saying that Windows 10 should never display this, since some folks probably love this feature.

But I need to turn it off.

I've looked through the settings and can't see a way to turn this off.
Can anyone show me how to turn off this display in Windows 10?

Thanks much,
wg

I bought X1 carbon Gen 3 model online two weeks back. As per the specifications ths battery should last more than 10 hours. but my battery drains with in 4-5 hours. no heavy usage, 25% brightness even tested in strech mode , which lasts for 6 hours Any suggestions

Answer:x1 carbon 2015(Gen 3) battery draining too quickly

I think 4-5 hours is pretty spot on, unfortunately, at lest for moderate usage (browsing, word processing, etc.) with the screen brightness pretty far up where it needs to be because of the relatively dim screen.  It's really wrong of Lenovo to advertise the X1 as a 10+ hour machine.  Incidentally, Windows 10, while just the same battery efficiency on my Surface Pro 3, has taken a roughly 20% toll on my X1 Carbon so I used to be probably in the 5-7 range before Windows 10 but now, definitely closer to 4-5 hours until my day is done.  It feels like such a step backwards compared to my old MacBook Air which was a real 10-12 hours, just as Apple says.  Of course, everyone's mileage can vary.

Is it possible to change the wifi card in this model and can it be changed to a different manufacturer other than intel or maybe a different model of the intel one? Nothing but issues with the intel one.

Answer:2015 x1 carbon recommendations for wifi cards

The only card you can use is the one that ships with it. In this case the best WLAN card is the Intel Centrino 7265 Wireless-AC.Don't lose sleep over it. The Intel 7265 Wireless-ACE works perfectly fine. If you have issues then the cause is most likely your router. Update your router's firmware.

Just received (1 week ago) an x1 carbon 3rd gen (2015) with an IPS panel nontouch option. Love the computer. However, the screen is just not bright enought for me even at 100% brightness. I tried turning off the adaptive brightness feature (since I saw that in some other thread) and there's really no change. It looks just as bright as my T410 and that laptop is over 5 years old. Any suggestions? Returning it will cost a hefty 15% restocking fee.

Proud new owner of the 2015 X1 Carbon (3rd Gen.).  Really loving a lot about this laptop.  Great screen (I have the touch), awesome keyboard, great trackpoint, etc.  Just got the X1 yesterday and I've been using it ever since. Biggest issue is that web browing is really slow and choppy.  I generally use Chrome (I have a Surface 3 also and Chrome is fantastic on that) but have also tried Internet Explorer.  Both are pretty choppy browsing experiences with web pages taking too long (a few seconds or more) to fully load.  If everything hasn't loaded up yet, scrolling is very choppy (which is my biggest complaint).  I don't mind the slow loading as much as the fact I can't really scroll down the webpage without starts and stops until everything is loaded up.   Chrome is a bit worse but both are bad.  As I said, Chrome is fine on my Surface and also fine on my 4 year old MacBook Air - it just zips right along without delay.   I uninstalled Norton Internet Security which seemed to be intercepting everything I was doing and bumped performance up to max (which is now decemating my battery life) but still have the choppy browing experience.  It's like there's still something between Chrome and the internet slowing everything down (I have a mega-fast 150MB connection speed).  I also updated all firmware and drivers (there were alot) but that didn't help and Windows 8.1 is fully up to date after an... If this is a wireless connection I would look at how the wireless card and your wireless router play together. Usually slowdowns like you describe can be attributed to some setting in either the card or router.

I got an X1 carbon 3rd around 2 weeks ago and I am running on Win10 Education. I have encountered several "problems" 1. When I press the underside (the bottom) of the laptop below the touchpad, I heard this clicking noise, similar to clicking the touchpad.  2. Occasinally, when I shut down the computer, the screen was off, but the power light was still on. I need to hold power swith for a while to forcefully shut the computer down 3. Still occasinally, the laptop went to sleep with a solid green power light on and it could not be waken up. Still I need to forcefully shut it down and restart again.  I did a little research and I have not seen a lot of problem 1, but many complaints on 2 and 3. Did you encounter similar problems before? Are they design problems, system issues, or defects? If I got a defective product, I would like it to be exchanged or so.Thank you for your comments!

Hi,I bought an X1 Carbon 2015 with 8 GB RAM and as the ram is soldered in the MB, my question is if there is any way to have Lenovo upgrade the memory to 16 GB for me. Any suggestions? any idea how it costs? Thanks in advance.

Answer:How to upgrade the ram by Lenovo support for X1 Carbon 3 gen (2015)?

Good day and welcome to the community.

The only way I can think of this type of upgrade being possible would be a system board swap.
If you want to explore this option, having Lenovo Service doing it, I'd recommend you contact them directly to enquire. I've included the contact info below.

Hi there...  First time user,  just bought an X1 Carbon Gen 3, still waiting on delivery.I'm currently using a Sony Vaio which has a dedicated Active Capacitive Stylus which I love.  I bought the high res touch screen model of the X1 but it doesn't come with a pen, so I'm wondering if it is capacitive and if so could someone recommend a pen.  I'm giving my wife the Sony, which means she'll get my beloved pen too, which is a bummer.  Thanks

Hello guys, I am really not sure if this is the place to be posting this but I am not sure where to direct this. About a month ago, the right key of my Thinkpad X1 Carbon (2015) touchpad was jammed. It had been less than 6 months since I have purchased this laptop. I immediately contacted the Lenovo service centre (OPUS) in Singapore to enquire about repairs and they insisted that a jammed key is not covered under warranty. The service representative insisted that the jammed key was because of a spill without even looking at the laptop and said that they would send me quotation instead. Even though there was no such spill, believing the costs of replacing a single jammed key to be nominal, I requested for that quotation. A couple of days ago, I finally did get that quotation which stated the costs of a single key replacement to be roughly 650 dollars, a sum which I consider excessive and unjustifiable especially since the rest of the laptop and touchpad is in perfect working condition. Does anyone here have any advice on how to deal with this or is there really nothing I can do about this?

I recently bought a refurbished Carbon X1. The trackpoint and the touchpad top buttons don't work. The touchpad and bottom button do work. Touchscreen does work. So far, everything else has been okay. The "Enable Trackpoint" checkbox is greyed out in Control Panel / Hardware / Mouse / Thinkpad tab. After searching forums and web, I have tried the following, none of which have worked:- update all drivers - ensure windows 7 updates are up to date- uninstall lenovo driver and install synaptics driver (didn't work)  then reinstall lenovo driver (didn't work)- disable and enable trackpoint in BIOS (with reboots in between)- reset, power off, and reset via the hole in the base No luck so far. Any assistance greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hello to everyone, I have a very strange problem.I've purchased X1 carbon together with OneLink PRO dock. The problem I have, is that only thing I can use OneLink together is external monitor.USB ports does not work at all, there is no voltage at output, ethernet does not work too.Button on top also works and I can put carbon to sleep and wake him up from sleep.Other stuff does not work. I noticed that dock gets veery hot after 2-3 minutes when connected to power, as well as power supply for it, even if computer is fully charged.I also noticed that red led should be on if dock is active but it is not. I mean RED led on I letter of "ThinkPad". Is there a possibility that I received blown and not working dock from Lenovo?

Would it be possible to add a second SSD to the WWAN slot on the X1 Carbon 2015 3rd Gen? They make compact M2 SSD's that would fit the WWAN slot. Transcend makes a compact 42mm drive that would fit perfectly in this slot. (TS256GMTS400). I have read for the X1 Carbon 2nd gen it was not possible because of whitelisting within the Lenovo Bios only permitting certain wwan cards to work and an ssd was not possible. Would love to be able to host 2 ssds within this laptop. I just recieved my X1 Carbon today, and while the device itself is really nice, with an incredible screen (QHD/Non-Touch), I noticed an 'issue' on mine: My bottom covers seems to 'squish' in the area around the middle center screws (port sides, not LCD side). Is anyone else experiencing this? Is it just due to the way that bottom cover is manufactured, or should I put in for warranty service?

Answer:2015 Carbon X1. Faulty bottom cover?

Just going to keep updating this thread with my less than stellar experiences so far. I go to open a web page, internet explorer loads up, it's a white background on the new tab page. My monitor has noticeable 'spots' on it. It almost seems like the display wasn't properly fused to the display cover, or something.  In the picture I've attached, you can clearly see at least one of them (it's in the center - no, it's not a smudge or light reflecting off it).  I don't have time to call Lenovo support tonight, but I did put in a service ticket. We'll see what happens next, and where I go from here. So far it just seems like whoever is in charge of quality control isn't doing their job correctly. Would really like to not have to return the whole device and buy an XPS 13, but lets see how this goes.

Greetings, I received my new Lenovo X1 Carbon last week and have been transferring data and programs from my "old" T420sfor the past few days whenever I get the chance between working and sleeping. When I exported my fingerprint data from the T420s and transferred the exported file to my new X1 Carbon, I was surprised to find that the new "Fingerprint Manager Pro" apparently has no option to import fingerprints. This is a step backwards, but, not to worry, I can register my prints again.  Having registered one finger on each hand, I attempted to register a second finger of each hand and was confronted with "This finger is already enrolled in Database. Please try to enroll again using another finger".   I have tried updating drivers and even installing the Fingerprint software from the T420s (thought I could cheat and import my data via that SW) but that SW does not recognise the sensor device. My Product is 20A70092MZBIOS GRET44WW (1.21)Synaptics FP Sensors (WBF) (PID=0017) Driver Date 29.01.2015, Version 4.5.285.0Fingerprint Manager Pro Version 8.01.42(x64) Thanks in advanceWICA

Hello all,  Looking for some advice on properly setting up power managment on my new X1Carbon 3rd Gen, touch screen, i7, 8GB ram.  Running Windows 8.1.  I have used the default Lenovo powerplan but reduced brightness to 50%.   I noticed today and yesterday while traveling that I was not getting the 5-8 hours I have heard people mention.  Yesterday though I was watching some video in the VLC app and found I was down to 30% after approximately 2 hours.  In total may have gotten 3 hours battery.   Today I worked on my laptop on two train rides back to back total 2.5 hours and was down to 28% battery.  I suspect that I might have some settings not optimized so any feedback would be appreciated.  This is a fresh install so no bloatware and all Lenovo drivers are up to date.   Any feedback would be appreciated or areas I should look at to fix this.

Answer:X1 Carbon 2015 (Gen3) Battery life

I am probably in the 'real world' 5-6 hour range with my Gen. 3 X1 (sometimes I can stretch to 6.5-7 hours if I watch power usage very carefully and run Task Manager to shut down battery hogging processes).  Big dissapointment in the battery life department, for sure.  I think part of this is Windows 8.1 which tends to run processes that chew up battery (unlike Apple laptops which are way more optimized to sip power). I originally ran on "Balanced"  mode but I'm getting really bad browser (mostly Chrome) lag on battery so I switched to "Lenovo Power Optimized" which really hasn't helped the lag that much but the machine seems a bit more responsive.  I have Battery Bar Pro to monitor my instant power usage and found that the X1 uses far less power on battery when browsing using Internet Explorer touch (on the Metro side) but that requires you to choose IE11 as your default browser which is not optimal since the touch version of IE11 is so limited (no extensions) that it makes browsing difficult (at least for me).  I am praying that Spartan solves these problems.   So, bottom line is that the X1 is definitley not getting anywhere near its advertised battery life of 10.4 hours.  I'm sure you could get that if you had the screen all the way down and used the X1 in a very limited fashion but nobody works like that.  Lenovo should be more like Apple and give real world battery life estimates (yes, the MacBook Air real... Is there a fix for this?  I just ran the latest update as of 11/15/2015.   Prevoiusly on Windows 8.1, sleep worked fine. Now, all it does is try to boot, but shuts down and goes into a loop. So, the only way to get it back running again is to hold down the power button.  But what's the point of putting it in sleep mode if I have to do that each time?

Dear Lenovo, On 10-18-2014, 12:31PM, I posted a message entitled "Any news on the X1 Carbon 2015 Refresh?" After seeing your product on youtube from CES 2015, I immediately knew I wanted to purchase this laptop. The design is cutting edge, the keys back to normal and specs that blows my x301 1.6ghz away. My x301 has been retired and I've been without a laptop for 4 months. It's been doable since I have desktops everywhere I go, but still I missed having an ultraportable companion around. Lo and behold, I purchased an i7, 8gb, QHD non-touch, 256GB, LTE w/ Verizon. But before I did, I went to Best Buy with cash in hand to see if any laptop there could trump the x1. If at that moment, I would of purchased it. I saw the lenovo line, but they were consumer specs. I saw the others and they just bored me. Let's just say, after walking around and checking out the other laptops. I confidently came back to the Lenovo website to purchase a laptop that would take nearly 3-4 weeks to get into my hands. All in all, worth it. Thank Lenovo for listening to your people.  If you ever want me to review your 2016 unit... Message me.

Hi, i recently used my X1 to connect it to my TV via HDMI. It worked like a charm. Yesterday it stopped working (Nothing was changed. Audio was working, lid was shut. Lid was opened the other day, audio is not working...). I get a video signal, but no audio. To verify, that this is no issue on the hardware defect issue, I booted to an installed Debian and there I get an audio signal over HDMI. After that I deinstalled the audio and graphic driver, rebooted, installed the audio driver, rebooted again, installed the graphics driver, rebooted again. Still no working audio over HDMI.After that I tried the procedure above again but installed the audio driver first. Still no success. The HDMI audo device does not show up in the playback device tab. Not even if I select to show me disconnected devices. OS: Win 8.1 64bit, drivers a all newest. What to try next? Any ideas?

Windows 10 ProX1 Carbon Gen 3 When I shut down the system or close the lid, many times the device will not actually enter sleep. The LEDs remain on and the only way to shut down the machine is to press the power button until it switches off completely.  All the drivers and Lenovo software have been updated manually from the Lenovo website and Windows 10 doe snot offer any new updates either. The reliability report shows a "system not properly shut down" or "Windows stopped working" and this error-code: 0x0000009f (0x0000000000000003, 0xffffe0017881c060, 0xfffff80076bc3990, 0xffffe001780c0510) Windows 8.1 worked just fine on my Lenovo... a little help, please!

Answer:X1 Carbon 2015 (3rd Gen) Crashes on Shutdown/Sleep

I have the same problem but with a factory install of Windows 10. I either put it into sleep mode or close the lid, and it either shuts down, or crashes down but either way, I lose what I had open. All power settings are correct and I have even changed timings and sleep/hibernation options and same happens - also, can bebattery or plugged in.

Hello, I'm facing a problem with my lenovo pro 2840m display and carbon x1 (R90FWLB9) on windows 7 64bit. The specifications of both devices are saying that they are capable of showing a resolution of 3840x2160 at 60hz. Nevertheless, its not working. Here the steps I tried: - Using the mDP Port directly from the laptop - not the DP port of the dock- Buying a new mDP -> DP cable which is able to display 4K at 60hz (tested in another environment)- Enabled DP 1.2 in monitor settings- Installed last version of intel chipset driver- Installed last version of intel graphic chip driver- Restarted monitor and laptop several times- Factory reset the monitor- Downloaded and installed drivers for the display- There is no other display connected, and the laptop is shut. The 2840m is the only device which is in use After all these steps, I'm still only getting 30hz.  This are the urls to the device-support pages:X1 Carbon Support PageThinkVision Support Page I have no ideas what to try next, but working 8-10hrs a day with 30hz hurts my eyes. Any ideas?

Hi all,
I have a 3rd gen x1 carbon, about a month old.  I am not sure whether it has always done this or not, but when the computer goes to sleep mode with my external bose speakers plugged in, they buzz.  It's the same buzz that comes from the speakers when, for example, I touch the cable contact with my hand or against a piece of metal, but this is the first time a computer has ever done this when it is in sleep mode- the very same speakers did not have the problem on another computer.  And obviously the sound stops when the computer boots up, and no buzzing at any other time.

It's a minor annoyance- I walk away for twenty minutes and realize it's buzzing like crazy and unplug the speakers- but I'd rather there were a fix of some kind.  Does anyone know of one?

Yesterday I installed the firmware update for the 20BS Carbon X1 2015 and ran into a number of issues: 1) The BCD Store for the Windows Boot Manager is corrupted causing BitLocker to fail with "System cannot find the path specified" error on the last step trying to enable Bitlocker. Resuming BitLocker on an existing drive fails too. Tried a number of things already to fix it, but so far haven't found any solution except to turn off bitlocker drive encryption (Windows 8.1 Pro) Any hints towards sovind this are helpful. Already tried Windows Statup repair (no dice, bootrec /fixmbr, bootrec /fixboot, bootrec /rebuildbcd). Windows is able to start just fine at the moment, so not in immediate problems. Maybe the imminent Windows 10 upgrade will allow me to just pave over this.  2) The new "Legacy F1-F12" feature in the firmware settings doesn't work correctly. Turning it on breaks the behavior of the Insert and Delete keys. It looks like they switch their behavior. I've found a couple of other posts in the forums for different types of thinkpads with similar issues. I have the following items updated/installed:Hotkey package 5.6 <- Is that what's meant by "Lenovo Base utility"?Lenovo Power Management Driver <- available download is slightly older than required version according to readme. Instead of turning this on in the firmware I've opted to turn this on in Windows (Keyboard settngs).  3) had to use the "reset pin" at the ... Hey guysFirst, English is not my mother language... So there might be tons of mistake, sry about that.I ordered my X1 carbon with 120GB SSD 1 year ago, and i keep using it like normal.Every thing works fine but yesterday my SSD was full. So i decided to upgrade it.i bought a Plextor PX-G256M6e and clone the old 120GB SSD to the Plextor one on my desktop PC.Once I install the new ssd into my X1 Carbon Gen3 2015, everytime when i boot it up, there will be a message said "error 2103, ssd detection fail" something like that, and tell me to press the ESC key to continue. After I press it, It will boot up just like normal and i can use this laptop as usual. Everything works fine except when it boot up. In fact, I'm now typing this on the X1 carbon. If i re-install the old 120gb ssd again, that error screen won't appear. Can anyone help me to solve this error? I've searched and find different solutions to solve this annoying error, but no one works, not even ONE. There are some post in this forum too, and they don't work on my laptop as well... Hi everyone! I bough brand new Lenovo Thinpad X1 Carbon (3rd generation, 2015) and everything is working fine except build-in display - it's black since last system shutdown. I've checked every possible config, key shortcuts but it still doesn't want to cooperate. HDMI port is working, I can use my external display instead but it's very embarrassing for Lenovo that such reliable brand (Thinkpad) released a product which broke in less than 24 hours from purchase. Have you any constructive feedback except calling the service to take it and fix it? What else can I do to make sure it's hardware manufacturing defect? Cheers!

Earlier this year, I experienced a serious display flickering issue and the eventual full-blown display failure on my X1 Carbon (2015 20BS). The keyboard bezel around the display hinge (specifically the left one when you face the screen), is extremely sensitive to any amount of finger pressure. On top of that, the bottom of the laptop close to the hinge is just as sensitive to touch as well.  These sensitive areas can cause the display to stop working intermintently (off and on). Eventually, after about a week or so, the display would stop working all together. Since my X1 Carbon was just out of warranty, I had to send it to IBM for repair. The cost is $700, not including shipping and state + city taxes (about $50 worth). Initially I thought, maybe it was stress from carrying it around daily inside a laptop carrying case (I mean, X1 Carbon being a ultrabook..super portable right?). So now, after the repair, I actually treat this X1 Carbon way better than I do with my Apple Macbook Pro. In fact, the X1 Carbon is on house arrest, permanently sitting on my office desk. Fast forward a couple months since the repair, out of blue today, I decided to lower the audio volume, and I suddenly noticed a screen flicker. "Oh c*ap!" thought in my head.  Lo and behold, yep, the hinge trouble is back again without me ever putting any unsual stress on this ultrabook!. I am at a loss on what to do. At this point, if I spend anohter $700 on this repair, I might... Read more

When I take my laptop outside, the maximum brightness actually goes down a notch or two (it should go up!) so I'm thinking even though I am manually upping the brightness to maximum, the sensor is overruling me.  Maximum indoor brightness is higher than maximum outdoors because of the sensor - go figure!  Is there a way to turn off the auto-brightness sensor on a 2015 X1 Carbon? I've seen others with 2014 X1's say you can turn off the ALS (Ambient Light Sensor) in the Devices Control Panel under Sensors but there is no such setting for me in my 2015 X1.  I looked everywhere I could but can't find that toggle anywhere.

Hi All, I've got a Gen 3 X1 Carbon, and I just tried this morning to connect it to my two Dell U2415 monitors via the DisplayPort 1.2 output (daisy chained).  The monitor that is connected directly to the laptop works properly, but the daisy chained monitor will randomly go dark.  When it's not dark, it works as it should - and when it IS dark, it still shows up in my Windows "Screen Resolution" menu.  If I use HDMI to connect the second monitor to the laptop, it works fine.  The behavior is unchanged whether I have the built-in laptop screen enabled or not. I called Lenovo support, and was told that daisy chaining does NOT work directly from the laptop and that I would have to use a dock to get this functionality.  I don't believe this to be true, based on the research I did - and if it is true, the display specs for this laptop are extremely misleading. Has anyone else had this issue?  My system information is below: OS: Windows 8.1 64-bitProcessor: Core i7-5600URAM: 8GBSSD: 512GB PCIeExt. My new X1 (2015) doesn't seem to wake up from hibernation without the AC plug-in.  As I notice, this only happens when the battery is lower than ~90% (I guess the battery threshold).  After hibernation when the battery is lower than that number, the system won't able to start without pluging-in the AC cord.  The hibernation when the battery is above the threshold, everything is working fine. Does anyone face this issue?  I have just got this X1 to replace my old X220T, so I haven't exactly be sure if I do anything in the wrong sequence.

It's been 1 week since I received my first Lenovo Laptop - X1 Carbon Gen3 and I'm very pleased with it so far. Since the beginning I noticed a 'clicking' sound produced when resting my palms on the keyboard to type, but couldn't figured out what it was. Today I took a closer look and discovered that the bottom chassis (front corners) is being pushed in and out its position, creating this 'clicking sound'.  It almost looks like the screws were not properly tightend so they do not allow any flex between the bottom chassis and the body of the ultrabook.  I tried tightening the screws, but it seems like they are fully tightened, so there isnt anything I can do about it. I performed a research and found one more user complaining about the same issue here:http://www.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comments/30a5rz/i_have_a_touch_and_a_nontouch_qhd_x1_carbon_3rd/ I'd like to know if anyone else has experienced this issue and how its best resolved. Many thanks, Chris

Answer:X1 Carbon Gen3 (2015) Chassis constantly clicks in and out of position

You could try filing down the length of the screws, or inserting something that functions like a washer between the head of the screw and baseplate. Careful though, too many attempts to fix the problem may end up stripping the screw hole.

Hi folks, It has been about 10-11 months since I bought my X1 Carbon 3rd gen. (2015), with 512GB SSD. It comes with ThinkPlus warranty, which says battery is also covered for 3 years.A month back, my battery started getting discharged very quickly when not on AC power. I checked the the Lenovo app, which says: "The battery is in poor condition"."The battery can only store 52.9% of its original full charge capacity". Its "Design Capacity" is 50.22Wh, but now its Full Charge capacity is about 26-27Wh! Cycle count is 288. I've never used any other AC adapter, except the original that came with it.Questions:1. Is it covered under warranty? This degradation is not normal and I believe there's a replacement I can do. 2. Warranty page for my serial number on Lenovo's site lists 3 warranties:i. 3 year limited warrantyii. 3 year ThinkPlus warranty and "The battery is also covered for 3 years". iii. "The battery included within this product is entitled to a 1 year on-site warranty. Please note that this may differ from the warranty of the base product itself." So, is my battery covered for 3 years OR 1 year?

Simple question: is there any way at all to have a 3rd generation X1 Carbon docked (OneLink) and still output through the built-in HDMI port on the laptop? The built-in mini-DisplayPort video out still works when the device is docked, but I haven't been able to figure out how to get HDMI output when device is docked, even when all other displays are disabled. Using latest Windows 10 64-bit.

According to this thread it will not work as lot of users has also tried that configurations so sadly there is no workaround.

I hope the above information helped you.

Is there a way to keep these settings on (keyboard light and battery saver) even after restarting the pc or resuming from sleep?

Good Afternoon, I am having an issue with my x1 Carbon 2015 (Gen3). This machine uses a different Synaptic package from the x1 Carbon (Gen1) which I have used previously. The package I am using is as per the Lenovo website - version 18.1.27.14. When using Micorosft Excel 2013 and trying to scroll horizontally using the middle trackpoint button and the trakpoint nipple. The cursor changes and displays a horizontal scrollbar icon but only intermittantly works, mostly just after a reboot and then shortly after it fails although still changes the cursor. Verticle scroll works without issue in all applications. I have tried generic synaptic driver package directly from them to no avail. I have tried the Gen1 driver package to no avail. Does anyone have any ideas, similar experience, workarounds? Or a Gen3 that they can try to recreate the same issue? ThanksR

Answer:x1 Carbon 2015 (Gen3) Trackpoing Horizontal Scroll (Excel)

So the issue has moved on a litte. I have managed to find the previous drivers 18.1.27.12 but this has not made a difference to the issue either. However.....When it occurs and I am not able to scroll horizontally if I attempt to scroll using the trackpad it will then reactivate the trackpoint horizontal scroll. So better than previously and a workaround I can probably live with until the release of new drivers. As before though, if anyone is able to test the same circumstances as I have it would be interesting as I can't think what else with my setup could be the issue. ThanksR
