How do i remove a dos program from my hard drive

Question: How do i remove a dos program from my hard drive

I installed a dos program and now I am trying to remove it. I tried the command prompt and the wmic thing and looked in the list of programs it populated, but the program does not show up in the list. Although it does show up in the c: programs listing on my hard drive. Do I just delete the folder containing the program exe files? or is there something else to I have to do to remove it

Preferred Solution: How do i remove a dos program from my hard drive

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, I just tried to uninstall a piece of software and it began removing my entire hard drive. I noticed the unexpected file names scrolling past and killed the process. It seemed to be going in alphabetical order and I no longer have any folders starting with 'a' on my computer (all my adobe software is gone ). Is there any way I can undo something like this? I suspect there isn't so is there any log kept of exactly what was deleted? I have backups of pretty much everything, but it's obviously extremely time consuming to recreate my computer so a list of what was deleted would speed things up a bit. Thanks.

I have a sea gate 300 gig hard drive and I cannot get the space/size on it to change. I've re booted, taken it in and out and tried different computers but they all think that there is 138 gigs free of the 300. I have a folder of stuff that has said "24.3 gigs" via properties for about a week now though I can open and close the files, play videos in it, and have added about 15 gigs of stuff to the folder. About 3 months ago I created a partition and made most of the 300 gigs FAT32 so I can play it on my ps3. I've had no issues until now. Also, I have the exact same hard drive also in FAT32 and it suddenly will not show up and it appears to be doing the same thing. When I delete files from the folder, the image still shows as it being filled with that file (on my computer). Though moved files etc still work with no issues on my computer.

I have vista, if that makes a difference.

Hi everybody,

I tried to find the answer by searching and more than one said this to other members: Uninstall anything you have installed to the D drive then re-install it to your C drive. Can someone tell me how to uninstall program on the D drive? I installed a new program and somehow it got on both the C and D drives, and now the D drive is almost full and not only that, the icon for the program I installed is in front of the D drive in the My Computer screen! That makes me think I have a really big problem. I uninstalled the program from the C drive hoping that would get it off both drives, but it didn't. So how can I get it off the D drive? I need to tell you that I am not a computer expert....obviously , so I hope there is an easy solution. I have no idea how this happened.

Thank you so much!

When did you install this program to the D drive?

My first inclination would be to do a System Restore to a date prior to the unintended installation.

With any luck, you should have restore points dating back several weeks.

Hello People,
A computer of mine failed and I want to reuse its single hard drive as a general purpose drive in another computer. That drive was created with three partitions: Recovery, System, and Windows. The drive is now mounted inside the second computer. (To repeat,
the second computer is configured perfectly normally with its own three-partition drive to boot from.)
The environment is:
Windows 10 Professional Version 1601 (Build 14393) 64-bit
User is an administrator
Hard drive is WDC 320 GB 2.5" attached to an add-in SCSI/SATA adapter card.
Using DiskPart I trivially deleted the System and Windows partitions from the drive I want to reuse.
However, the Recovery partition cannot be deleted. DiskPart (run from an elevated command prompt window) reports that the partition is "Hidden" and does not have a drive letter assigned. After selecting the disk and the partition to establish focus,
when I type "delete partition" I get the following error message:
   Virtual Disk Service error:
Cannot delete a protected partition without the force protected parameter set.
I do not know what that message means.
How can I eliminate this 13 GB partition so I can use all of the available space on the hard drive?
Thanks in advance.

I have 6 yr old Dell Dimension 6400 with a failing hard drive so I bought a new hard drive and decided to clone my drive before it failed, but I've ran into a few problems and I hope someone can help me before my old drive breaks!

I fitted the new drive as a slave drive using the "cable select" jumper setting as suggested in my Dell manual and managed to get the drive running fine. I can see it in the bios and my computer.

I cloned the drive using the free version of HDClone which appeared to run smoothly and afterwards I could see all the information from my old drive was on the new drive.

I opened the computer and unplugged the power from the old drive and changed the ribbon cable so the new drive would be the master drive and booted the computer but it said "boot disc failure" several times and a black screen.

I checked on the internet and found a post in a forum that said you could boot off the windows XP disc and run fixmbr which might work so I changed the boot order to boot from the CD rom, but when I tried it couldn't find the CD rom and wouldn't boot up.

After I removed the CD rom and changed the boot order back I tried booting again and this time the Dell logo came up followed by the Bios information and it said "cannot find Disc (0) cannot find disc (1)"

I decided to give up for the day so plugged the old hard drive back in, set it the master disc and the new drive as the slave disc and my computer booted first tim... Read more

so do you mean physically removing them? or wiping them clean?

physically its quite easy. remove the side case panel, unplug the hard drive from the motherboard and power supply, unscrew/unlatch the drive (there should be some sort of thing on the side holding it in place) and pull it out. once you see it you'll most likely be able to figure it out without any help.

I am looking for a program that will:-

1. Clone my primary hard drive to a secondary hard drive which will be bootable if needed to replace the primary drive, and

2. Update the cloned drive with all subsequent changes made to the primary hard drive.

Anybody got any suggestions.

[I am running Windows XP Home SP3]

Answer:Program To Clone Hard Drive

Sounds like you are asking for RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks).

The level of RAID you are referencing is RAID1. This mirrors 2 drives so that if one fails, the other still works, and data is not lost.

Kind of expensive to implement though, you will have to judge if it is practical for your situation.

Unless of course, you don't need to make the changes constantly. If you are just looking to update daily rather than real-time then norton ghost might be all you need.

Sometimes randomly my HDD starts doing crackling noises alot and especially when i do something. This may last for like 5-20mins. Is there any program to check what program or other is using up all the bandwidth going/coming through to my HDD?

Answer:Program to check what is using my hard drive much?

You have one way already in your pc. Go into 'Task manager', then 'performance' tab, then 'resource monitor'. The 'Overview' tab tells you what is happening. It is very useful to show if you have enough RAM installed for the programs you are running.
*One idea though, do you have a defragmentation program installed, which is set to run in the background or 'smart/auto' mode ?

**If you want to try a more detailed program try; http://systemexplorer.net/download.php
Click on 'Download' tab.
(The link for the download is near the bottom of the site, just above the blue advert. 'Download installer version' is the one.)
Run it 'as administrator'. This program highlights the programs which have just been active with a coloured background, which may help you .

Answer:hard drive program transfer

You can't! You can move files, but the registry and file assosiations need to be set on the primary system partition and also have the support files installed. The install program will install dll's and other system files in many locations so it is more than a matter of just moving them.

I dont know if this would go in gaming or not:

Ok i have my OS on one hard drive. I have another free hard drive (exact same kind as the OS is on) that i can put programs or what ever into.

As far as speed goes (least lag, load times, etc.) would it be best to put the application.... for example a game, onto the hard drive that carries the OS or into the empty hard drive?

Or would it be best to put the game onto the OS hard drive and then put the paging file into the empty hard drive (non OS)?

Answer:Running A program from Non OS Hard Drive

I personally have Windows XP on one harddrive along with a "storage" partition, then I install all my applications and games on the separate hard drive. Im sure it would load faster as it doesn't have to load OS stuff from the same hard drive. My pagefile is on the windows partition i guess. I didn't know you could change the pagefile location?

Just read an article that suggested that a "must have" is a Hard Drive Monitoring Program. They did not tout any particular one. It was suggested that this type program is essential because it can not only provide you with the condition of your HD but also give you a "heads up" as to when your HD is in trouble and about to fail.

I was wondering if any of our group use such a program and, if so, which one, and the pros and cons relative to such a program.

Thanks,

Answer:my hard drive is full, how do I get rid of program

Personally, I use Easycleaner [ click here ] this is freeware, but will work if you do not want to pay a subscription. It's also a good registry cleaner/duplicate file cleaner/etc. as well as a pie chart so you can see what is taking up space on your drive or in folders.HTHPaul

I have the Pinnacle Studio Delux which I use to put still photos with transitions and music and burn to DVD or vhs tapes. In Pinnacle booklet, it says it will work better if it is on it's own hard drive, so I had someone install a second hard drive for me, but it does not work.
1. I cannot download program to this second hard drive (no programs), the only thing I have been able to use this second hard drive for is for storage (photos/documents, etc.). I am think ing this second hard drive has something missing, is the second hard drive suppose to have it's own operating system?
2, I install the Pinnacle to the master hard drive and it is now not working correctly there either, it runs real slow and when you go to render the video, it keeps crashing. The program worked fine before I installed a secondary hard drive, it was a little slow but it worked fine, now I cannot get this to work correctly at all. I had the person who put the second hard drive in come to check it, but they said it is not the computer, it is the program, but, my question is why did it work before and also why can't I use the second hard drive for anything but storage?
If you can solve any of these problems, it would be WONDERFUL!

When you go to install the program, you should be able to select the hard drive to install to, you'll have to make that change manually. Once the install process starts, do not choose the 'standard installation' routine.

Windows 7 installed Office 2010 on system ond want to take off and install on another computer without activating it again

Answer:how to get a program off hard drive to install again

Read the license agreement you OK'd when you installed it, I am pretty sure that you are not allowed to reinstall it on a different system. If you install it without activating it, it is a trial version and I believe it will work for something like 30 days and bug you periodically to activate it.You can download and install free of any charge Openoffice.org for any system (Windows, Mac, and Linux). It can open MS Office formats as well as many others. You can set it to save in MS Office formats by default so everything is more portable. You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

well as of tomoro i will have 3 harddrives all with their own OS xp-vista-win7

my old pc that contained my vista drive was bought from ebay, and of course once an update failed i needed to reinstall the os, of course as it was from ebay i couldnt reinstall, so i got my old pc's hard drive that had an old version of xp on it, so now both the hard drives contain data that i want to keep, however i wanna free up room on my vista drive, and the best way for me to do that will be to remove vista as its doing nothing and is corrupt anyways

however i would like to know if its possible to remove vista, by deleting its "windows" section in the hard drive or by uninstalling it but still be able to get to all the files currently on the hard drive, im aware it seems an odd question, i know you dont need an os on each harddrive for it to work however im uncertain if the files are somehow attached to the os they was saved too, so for example deleating vista (i would still have an os (win7) would render all my files saved on my vista harddrive unusable as i was reading a similar post of this on win98 and the clever pc people at the time said this sorta thing wouldnt work, however of course its been nearly 10 years since that post, and the coding has changed an awful lot as well as a lot more different OS' companies around

my win7 hdd will be new and contain win7 and i intend to install my games to that, then i will have a second harddrive (my vista drive) for me... Read more

Answer:safe to remove second OS on a second hard drive

I can't see any reason why you couldn't remove Vista - but then I would have said the same about W98. As far as I'm aware, the user files are not attached to the OS at all (although some games and such might only be compatible with certain OSs).
Anyway, if you're in doubt, are you able to copy the files you want on the Vista HD (hard drive) onto one of the other HDs (or onto a CD if there isn't enough room), just in case? That would be a good idea anyway, as things do go wrong sometimes.
If you can uninstall Vista, that would be the better approach, but I can't see how you could do that if it's not working. You might be best to just copy everything you want, then reformat the disc and start fresh.

Hey guys, I hope this is the right forum for this question...

I have a 1TB hard drive. Roughly 700GB of it is devoted to my Windows partition, and the remainder is an Ubuntu partition that I created when I was having problems with my Windows installation. I'm no longer having problems with my Windows install, and I can't see myself using Ubuntu again.

Is there a painless way for me to "delete" the Ubuntu partition, and reassign that space as free space on my Windows partition? I don't want to have to reformat the whole drive. I'd also like to remove the GRUB bootloader, of course, so that my computer boots straight into Windows without me having to select it from a menu.

Thanks for your help!

Answer:Remove hard drive partition

Hello.

Before we make any specific recommendations will you please post a snip/screen-shot of the entire disk management drive map with a full description as to which drive/partition is which, so we can see what you have going on as there may be a fairly simple way to resolve the situation.

In the Windows start menu right click computer and click manage, in the left pane of the "Computer Management" window that opens click disk management and post a maximized snip of that.

Hi. Hope someone can help me. I recently purchased a new 120Gb hard drive for my desktop pc (Dell Optiplex GX260) to replace my old drive of 8Gb. I didn't have a clue what to do so I followed online advice and used a bootable Hard drive copying program. Despite reading up on the topic I wasn't 100% sure what i was doing. The end result was that I had copied everything onto my new drive AND partitioned it. All my files were on a new C:partition and a second partiton, H:, was created. Didnt seem like a big deal at the time but to my dismay C: was 8Gb and H: was 112Gb, furthermore to my horror my research suggests it cannot be undone, without erasing the drive. I ended up using the NTFS file system. I searchedhigh and low to find a way of unpartitioning the drive but I am told I can't fiddle with the 'system' partition. I have Windows XP and share the computer with my wife who has her own username. Everything revolves around 'My documents' and the user profiles, which are stuck on the C: partition, which has no space left. I have since faffed about trying to solve the issue. I put shortcuts in the My documents folder to the H:drive to try to solve the issue. Now i have a Program files folder on the H:partition, and as time goes on i am finding more problems with the partition. I know I can wipe the drive and try again but i don't have enough space on the old drive to put everything back on to it. Does anyone know an alternative?

Answer:Remove Hard Drive from "My Computer"

Ashampoo Win Optimizer, (which I got from a recent coverdisc). One of the things it can do is hide drives, so they are available to be used, but just aren't visible via, "My Computer" or Windows explorer, which is, I assume, exactly as you wish...I suspect that it's just a registry setting that is changed, but I'm afraid I know not which one!If you can get that prog, and install it on both, I imagine that you could use it from each and hide the relevant drive in each case.Good luck,Regards,Simsy

Answer:How to remove idx files from hard drive

First off you can try something simple. Go to your control panel and click the folder options icon. Then boogie over to the file types tab. Then look within that mess of file types for the mp3 extension. Then click the mp3" file and click the change button. Within the screen that pops up you should choose but no one likes to be told what to do. You can click the windows media player option if you want. Then make sure the check box "make sure you use this program......., is checked. Then click the okay button. Then click apply and okay. Okay! You can also go to this link and see what programs are default programs for different file types.http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorial... Take it easy man! Boy, have not been to this forum in a while. The hard disk in my Ideapad Z570 has failed and I need to replace it.  I can't find any guidance on the Lenovo website, google, or Youtube for how to remove / replace the hard disk for this laptop model.  I'm fully competent with doing this in a desktop PC, but this is my first laptop and I realise components are much more delecate so would like some guidance on this if possible. I have removed the bottom cover to reveal the serviceable components, but can't work out how to safely remove the hard drive. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
captainp

Answer:Satellite A30 - how to remove Hard Drive

Hi Tim,

The hard drive on your SA30 is underneath the optical drive so you need to slide the optical drive out of its slot (undo the screw marked F5 on the bottom of the notebook).

The hard drive will then be visible fastened in with four cross-headed screws which must be removed (two on each side of the hard drive. With the screws removed, carefully slide the hard drive towards the front of the notebook to disconnect it from its connector and carefully lift it out of its bay.

Ok heres the story, this is my first time posting btw I think I seriously could use a little help.

Well my computer was having freezes here and there then sometimes it would freeze so badly that I would have to manually power off my computer. Well after one of these freezes after I powered down, it would no longer start up. It would go to the loading screen for vista, then go black for a while, then go to a light blue screen. Not dark blue like the BSoD.

Well I took the computer to geeksquad at best buy to get an idea of what is wrong, I was told that all my hard ware appears fine and that I should probably just reinstall windows. I had vista and I know I can get windows 7 for free from my school so that's all fine and dandy. The real issue is they wanted like $100 to back up my files. All that is really important to me is some pictures on that hard drive, most of the pictures are backed up, but not the newest ones.

So I took it home, took out the hard drive and put it into my rocketfish I used 2 years be4 when my old computer died. So now I have it all set up in the external hard drive case. But when I tried to move the files off on my brothers Windows 7 operating system it said the hard drive needed to be formatted. It is showing up but wont let me access the files, and im decently sure I don't want to format the hard drive... I thought maybe it was windows 7 so I took it to my aunt's who has XP but now im having the same problem, it's reading the drive, but tell... Read more

Hi,

My beloved +10yr old Dell Dimension 5000 desktop hard drive, (the original one), has had it, (making a tick tock sound, and intermittently crashing)..... and yes it deserves a round of applause for a great life

I have another hard drive in the machine, (which has only data on it), and was wondering can i install an OS onto that and change the boot options to that drive and therefore remove the failed hard drive completely and still have a working machine?

Never done a hard drive swap before appreciate a bullet point guide

I have backed up all my data and the recovery partition on the Dell has long gone after multiple clean installs of XP.

(Oh.... id like to clean install WIN7 - having some issues with WIN10 at the mo, on my other machines and I need a WIN7 machine to get me by until resolved - thats another story though).

1 I have an HP5750 All-in-One printer/copier/scanner which came with a CDto programme my computer with.2 My computer is a Samsung laptop, running Windows XP. The AllinOne didn't behave properly so I tried to uninstall and then reinstall itssoftware, using the CD. I did not get any error messages. But it still didn't behave (wouldn't scan) and3 I got a message saying that the computer and AllinOne were not communicating properly. But this could not be, cos all the interfaces were ok and most printing and copying functions worked ok. So I thought that the problem could be due to residual corrupted files.4 After uninstalling (Control Panel>Add/Remove Programmes>HP>Remove), Ichecked Start>Search> Files n Folders>File Name 'HP', and found about 800files with hp or HP in the name, many contained inan HP scanner or printer folder, even though I had 'Uninstalled' the HP software. It seemed logical to remove these files and folders completely before attempting again to reinstall from the Allinone's disk, but deletingthem one by one would take forever and anyway I might pull some wrong ones. So I would like to know how to get all the HP AllinOne files out of my computer before attempting to reprogramme from the CD. Or can they safely stay in the hard drive without taking up hard disk space and without infecting or otherwise adversely affecting a new installation?

I have a new hard drive. I was hoping to use the Ghost Symantec program to copy my old hard drive on to the new one. It appears to be more difficult than originally thought. Can anyone walk me through this please. Thanks in advance.

Answer:Installing a new hard drive using ghost program

I do not use ghost, I use acronis true image however the steps should be about the same. I am assuming these are ide drives you are using.
To clone a drive.
1 Install the new drive as either a slave on ide1 or you can put it as the master on ide2 for now. Do not partition or format the drive; just install it like it came out of the box. If there is any partition info on the drive, delete the partition in disk management before you begin.
2 Boot with your clone CD ie the ghost CD. Select source [old drive] and destination [new drive]
3 Complete the clone process
4 Shut down the system; do not reboot with both drives connected. This will cause drive letter problems.
5 Install the new drive as the master on ide1. Be sure to set the jumper to master. Pull the power connector from the old drive.
6 Power on the system and make sure it boots and drive letters are correct. If all is well, you can shutdown and connect your old drive as a slave device for storage.

Note you may use CS [cable select] instead of master / slave. One other caution. If one of your drives is a WD western digital, they have two master settings. One is master single drive and the other is master multi drive. You set the jumper to what ever you have ie one drive on the ide channel or two drives on the ide channel. If your disks are not WD, disregard the above.

I want to copy the Hutchinson Science Reference Suite to my hard drive to save me inserting the free PC Advisor disk (Feb 2004) every time I run the program. Any one got any ideas. I have loaded all that I can see relating to the program but it still refers back to the cd-rom data. Thanks for any response.

I had a raid0 setup and kept failing out on me so I just separated the hard drives and decided to stop screwing with it. Anyway I have a program I would like to reinstall on another hard drive that was on the old previous one. It will not let me uninstall due to the old hard drive missing and cant reinstall. Does anyone know how I can fully uninstall or just reinstall the program on my new hard drive? Thanks in advanced for the gurus that help me.

Answer:Deleting program on removed hard drive

You might be able to use the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility to remove the instalelr references to it and hopefully successfully reinstall it. Here's the program: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

My hard drive had a bad volume error. I eventually got Windows to boot from a disk. I can access the hard drive but some files are missing. I wondered what the best commercial and best free hard drive content recovery programs were out there? It would save me so much time and effort as I have lost my dissertation.

Answer:Best hard drive content recovery program?

you can get a free demo of Easeus data recovery wizard which you can use to look at the data and see what it could recover. They tell you to use the demo and if you can see the files you are looking for then pay for the full prog about 70$. I used it to recover the data from an external usb hard drive with a master boot record failure.

Hi everyone,
I was wondering where all my hard drive space has gone today, and I wondered if a program that could show you what was on the hard drive existed. Kind of like a pie chart of your hard drive - each segment belonging to different categories.
Does something like this exist? It would be great to know where all the space has gone so I can delete some rubbish.
