Why did all my photo files turn to shortcuts?

Question: Why did all my photo files turn to shortcuts?

My Lenovo laptop recently decided to update itself to windows 10.I initially tough i lost all my pictures, but later found out they were located in C:/users/*myname*/pictures. I sighed with relief as they seemd to be intact and open as Intended.Like a month later i was working on resume online and was asked to include a picture of myself. So i went to the afromentoined directory only to find all of my files were turned into shortcuts. All of the shortcuts linked me to F:\*foldername* which i found preculiar given my hdd is named C:i googled arouond and found the attrib -h -r -s /s /d g:\*.* fix, but it kept telling me access denied. I understand this only works for portable drives?I really hope my pictures haven't just vanished anywhere, is there aything i can do to resolve this sitsuation?message edited by Megasatan

Preferred Solution: Why did all my photo files turn to shortcuts?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Why did all my photo files turn to shortcuts?

I'm not familiar with Windows 10, but if you look at the properties of the photos, what do you see? Also, are you located in the US? If so, it's not legal for an employer to ask for a photo until after a job offer has been made. :)

this started last week. I copied some programms from one pc to mine but my pc does not recognise it as it should be, it appears as a shortcut instead. What do you think is wrong?

Answer:[SOLVED] all my files turn to shortcuts

You cannot copy programs from one computer to another. A program when it is installed, installs not only in the Program Files but in the Windows Registry. If you just copy the program executable, it will just come across as a shortcut. You can copy, pictures, music, documents and videos etc. But not programs.

In the Metro screen, some shortcuts have an icon that looks like the Windows Photo Viewer icon. Some of these programs are: Macrium Reflect, Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard Center, TightVNC Viewer and Adobe Reader XI. See the screenshot below. How can I restore the icons, and prevent it from happening again?

Answer:Shortcuts have Windows Photo Viewer icon

Hello Megalos,

If you like, download and merge the .reg file for the listed lnk (LNK) option in the tutorial below. It will restore the default associations and registry entries for shortcuts, and hopefully fix this for you.

Default File Associations - Restore in Windows 8

In addition, you might also rebuild the icon cache.

Hope this helps,

A short time ago photos I open in Photoshop cc or Elements 11 open in huge size files.  I realize that these programs open the uncompressed files, which are larger than what shows on my harddrive, but when a 6 MB file opens as 51 MB, that seems excessive. As I work on the photo, the file rapidly become unworkable, using huge amounts of memory.  Can anyone help me with this?  I have been on an Adobe forum and haven't been able to resolve this.

Answer:Opening a photo in photo processing creates huge files

Welcome to Bleeping Computer. Whether what you're describing is unusual depends on a few factors. As you say the size variation can just come down to compression, as well as layers. What are the file formats and when you say "huge" amounts of memory, how much?

A 6MB .JPG could easily be compressed enough to be 51MB in RAM, especially if it has layers. Photoshop if I recall correctly uses default allocations that should allow filesizes over 1 GB to be handled. A more common cause of bogging down or instability is if the image RAM allocation is set very high to handle large images, but then a lot of effects plugins are used. Photoshop allocates a dedicated memory pool for plugins, and setting image memory very large robs this.

Answer:Narrator Keyboard Shortcuts to turn On/Off not working

Hi, first, the hotkeys are disabled if you have ever ticked the checkbox & No in the initial pop-up dialogue when Narrator starts.

This says these can be enabled again in Narrator's general settings. I've not found that yet.

Second, you can set Narrator to launch automatically in Settings:
Third, you could turn Narrator on like this:
Type
Narra in Cortana's search box.

Click
Narrator
(first find at top in Cortana's window).

Fourth, you could do this to start it:
Windows key + R, type
Narrator
<return key>

Hi,

I having a problem where if i set any short-cut on my desktop to a transparent one (both made in Photoshop, and one downloaded from here [7forums]) it will work until I log off (or restart ofc).

I have tried rebuilding the icon cache - again it worked until I logged off - and also tried rebuilding the thumbnail cache - but with the same result. Does anyone have any ideas?

The Install of Windows is fairly new only about a month old and although I do have a mod that removes the short-cut arrow this was happening before that point. - Just say if you want any other information.

Thanks, Wez.

Answer:Transparent Desktop shortcuts, turn black after logging off.

Hello Wez, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You might see if using the method in the tutorial below may work for you for this since it's uses a trasparent icon included in Windows.

I'm seeing the same four files repeat in the Temp Files / Shortcuts section of a Registry Mechanic scan.

\C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\DRM\Cache\Indiv01.tmp

Recent history: Less than a week ago, during a routine McAfee antivirus scan I discovered a half dozen files associated with the Artemis trojan. Several months earlier I found and debugged (also with McAfee) a different trojan. And the laptop has been slow for several weeks/months.

In anticipation of getting help here I tried running RootRepeal. That ran for more than 24 hours. So I stopped it. Then I tried running SysProt AntiRootkit. But McAfee wouldn't accept it and returned the following message.

Hi there

My Kodal Easyshare digital frame (SV-1011) wont turn on.

This began after i plugged the frame out of the wall while it was turned on.After this it wouldn't turn on when i plugged it back in.

There is a light on the plug/adapter. It stays lighting while i have detached the power cable from the frame itself but when i attach it back into the frame the light starts flickering faintly.

Could this indicate that something is fried in the frame or adapter? Has anyone had any problems like this have any tips or advice?

Id really appreciate it..

I am a relatively new Vista user and am overwhelmed by the overlapping of programs....I want to keep all of my videos and photos within one program on my computer. I seem to soetimes upload to Windows Live Photo, and sometime to Windows Photo. Is there a way to combine all files on these 2 programs and then delete the unused program? I like the visual format of Live Photo, so that is the one I prefer to keep. Thanks in advance for the tips.

Answer:Combine files in Windows Photo with Windows Live Photo?

I'm not quite familiar with either one... but I'm sure all your pics are in the Pictures folder and all your videos are in the Videos. So you can just import...

Another alternative is Picasa (if you want one). It automatically scans your whole computer for pics and videos, so it wouldn't be a hassle to find them. It is centrallized in one location.

Recently my laptop was infected by a FakeSecurityAlert Virus. I downloaded ThreatFire from Cnet and it identified and quarantined the Ave.exe. Since then however many of Windows' system programs are no longer accessible, my desktop shortcuts wont startup and none of my other programs will start. I can only run any of them that are accessible by right-clicking their folder or icon and selecting "start" from the resulting drop down menu.
I am running Vista on a Gateway M-6846 Laptop, any assistance offered would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

My coumputer was running short on disk space (1,4 gb / 64 gb), so I downloaded and ran windirstat. Right after this, I noticed that all the files on my desktop were gone (except for the trash bin), and I tried to open windows explorer and almost everything's gone there as well ( shortcuts, folders...).

After a reboot, I still cannot see or access any of my files, but I can run windirstat, and windirstat finds all the files.

In the command prompt, i can browse my way through the directories, but if i type DIR to view the files, I get an error message, saying volume c has no label.

Any clue as to what this is? Only recent change I've made that I can think of is to make all hidden files visible before right before installing and running windirstat

Answer:Files and shortcuts cannot be found

Ok I didnt make all hidden files visible, I made all files hidden. Great.

I have made sure my machines does Not have any virus protection running.   I am both a Local Admin and a Domain Admin.   UAC is turned OFF.   Yet when I'm in a folder and I "right click" and choose New I only have 1 option, which
is a folder.  and on the folder I see the UAC shield icon.    How do you fix this?

Hello,

This problem has been going on for a little while. I'm using Windows XP home edition.

Whenever I try to delete a .exe file or a shortcut, explorer.exe is restarted. Basically, the whole screen just refreshes. However, if I go to the command prompt, I can delete the file using the black dos-like screen.

Other information:

I get these errors in the event viewer when this happens:
The IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service service entered the stopped state.
The shell stopped unexpectedly and Explorer.exe was restarted.

Another strange thing that I've noticed is that adaware has disappeared. I do not know if this is related or not. I have tried reinstalling the program and it still won't start, it says a file is missing and it looks like a lot of files just aren't there. Again this may or may not be related.

I ran a virus scan and could not find a virus. If anyone could please provide some help that would be great. I have done a lot of searching both on the web and the microsoft help site and I can not find a solution.

Thanks.

Answer:Can't delete .exe files or shortcuts

I have fixed my own problem.

Solution? I simply went to updates.microsoft.com and updated as much as seemed reasonable or a possible help.

I've still yet to find the reason why adaware is being a pain, but my biggest problem has been solved.

My files in usb are changed to shortcuts and I can not remove this virus. How to remove that? And when ever i insert a new pendrive it also getting the same problem.

Answer:Shortcuts instead of files in USB. Virus?

You sort it by using the Cmd box as Administrator, here's the command and how to do it click here I advise the cmd box way as I have never used the 'tool' offered so can't vouch for that (I would hazzard a guess that the tool is just a .bat or .script that runs the same command)

Some of my files disappeared from my desktop! I was working on something, and my brother accessed my computer over the network, and suddenly, my files and a few shortcuts were gone from my desktop! I was very alarmed. I restarted, turned off, disabled wi-fi, everything, and it wouldn't reappear. I know it's possible that he deleted those files, but he promised that he didn't. I there any way how I can get them back? They are all really important. I am now using freeware Recuva to try to recover the files. Thank you in advance for your help.

Answer:Help Me Please?(XP) shortcuts and .exe files do not work.

Hi, and welcome to TSF's HijackThis Log Help forum.

Before proceeding, please print this page or copy it to Notepad to help you carry out the instructions. If you have questions about any instruction, please ask before performing it.

If you can't download one of the below programs by simply clicking its link, please try right-clicking that link instead. Then click Save Link As. or Save Target As.. and save the file to your computer.

Now, the fix..

Go to My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing / visible. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files option.

To get rid of any lingering installation files, you should empty your Temp folders. (You should do this periodically anyway, as even benign software tends to leave a lot of junk there.) Download and install CleanUp! (alternate link), then run it and click the CleanUp! button. When it asks whether you want to log off, click Yes.

Reboot your system into Safe Mode by repeatedly tapping the F8 key until the menu appears, then selecting Safe Mode.

Click Start > (Settings >) Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs. If the following program exists -- and it might not -- uninstall it:

begin2search

Open Hijack This and click Scan. If they still exist -- and some might not -- check all of the following entries (make sure you do not miss any):

Hi All,
I don't think anyone will be able to help me on this one but it's worth a shot.
Basically I have a tonne of folders and files on my desktop and decided to select all of them and paste them into another users desktop (there are 2 users on my PC). After I moved them over to the other user I checked if it had worked successfully but I found they had all become shortcuts. At this point I wasn't worried because surely the originals on the other users desktop must be there? wrong. They had also become shortcuts!
I have tried the 'Show hidden files' many time but to no avail. They MUST still be on my computer right? They're really important files and I do desperately need them. Would anybody have an idea on how to solve this issue?
Many thanks for your time,
Ryan

Answer:Desktop Folders & Files have become shortcuts!!!

To try to find them: Rightclick on one of the 'Shortcuts' and choose 'Open Folder Location' (should be the 2nd item in the list)
Or: Rightclick and choose 'Properties' (last item on list) and look at the 'Target' in the 'Shortcut' tab - that will tell you where the file/folder is.

Hello forum,

I have a new problem: the computers from my school are all contaminated with this strange virus: It is not harmfull for the PC itself, but as soon as you plug a pen, your documents and folders turn into shortcuts and you won't be able to open/execute them.

I've opened the task manager and there are these strange applications going on:
ziehog.exe and ziehogx.exe
There is no process or the process that matches them is hidden, even if I right-click>go to process.
When I right-click>stop task, the task manager crashes and if I open it again, the tasks are still there.

To remove this, I open CMD and type:
attrib -h -r -s /s /d f:\*.*

This command makes my files and folders reappear, and also make other files appear, such as ziehog.exe and ziehogx.exe. Then I delete both of these files and I delete the autorun.inf that appears. I also delete all the shortcuts, because I have the files and folders back to normal.

The problem is: if I remove the pen and plug it back in, the same thing happens and my files turn into shortcuts again.

I've tried to look for ziehog.exe and ziehogx.exe in those computers but can't find them anywhere. I haven't tried to run any anti-virus or anti-malware because those computers don't have any of them and the Wi-Fi is too weak for me to download them from the internet (they cannot establish a connection). I also don't want to plug my pen because I'm afraid it will damage it, even after I run the CMD command (I'm affraid I bring the ... Read more

Hello all,

I would appreciate help. Namely, File Explorer shows files within the ROOT of my E drive as shortcuts. Please see picture below.

Moreover, when I double click (or if I right click and choose "Open", a warning message shown on the bottom right of the picture above appears: "This app can?t run on your PC. To find a version for your PC, check with the software publisher." And it shows "Canecel"

I have 3 PCs with windows 10 Pro x64. This issue came up on only one of them. I am thinking why is so. This PC has 4 disks. OS and most demanding application are installed on C: drive. I have put "My Documents" on D: drive, while I have put "Pictures", "Videos", and the rest on E: drive.

One thing that comes to my mind is a question. Why does it say "app"? Does it think it is an app? If so, why?

Final note: once I click "Cancel" on popup windows shown on the bottom right of above picture, it normally opens selected file as if nothing has happened.

Any ideas?

Hello everyone .. new to these forums. I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit edition on home built system with quad core phenom AMD and 8GB og meme using onboard raid 0. from installtion to running application s and installing printers this experience has been enjoyable. I really like the new itteration of windows.

With that said .. there seems to be a strange ghost in the machine here, first I had about 30% of teh icons on my desktop disapear from view (as seen in several other posts and forums on the internet this is not a case fo teh newbs where I turned off icons)... the icons just disapeared both from view and from my desktop folder. I accepted this may be a bug in teh RTM release and was reserved to wait for an update. However I thought I would post this because it is something new but has the same characteristics. I plugged in a WD 250GB usb drive I use for transferring files... several of the directories were showing no files in them and the drive free space was reported incorrectly. when I took the same drive over to my Vista 64 machine everything appears fine . reconnected it again to my Windows 7 machine and same results files were missing and the size was being reported incorrectly.

I was just wondering if anyone else has seen this behavior and would possibly have a resolution for it. Thank you in advance.

Computer is HP COMPAC D7800 CMT MINI TOWER

Today I uninstalled Malware Anti Bytes ( had name wrong) from Programs and Features because I discovered it was a LNK file and reinstalled correct malware bytes program
Scan was run and found following Riskware: Heuristics Reserved/Word Exploit and removed it. The source was C:\Users\terryfitzsimmons\Desktop.Explorer.exe .I had discovered earlier that Explorer Desktop shortcut was a LNK file and thought I had removed it, but apparently did not solve problem.
.During installation I was asked if I wanted to install a desktop shortcut and I answered yes. I right clicked on shortcut>properties>details and details showed it as an LNK file. The shortcut was also in white which I have found it indicates LNK file. I deleted the shortcut.
I have been having this problem for awhile with desktop shortcuts turning out to be LNK files. When I would click on desktop shortcut, instead of the program opening, I would get a window opened asking what program I wanted to use to open file, so I knew something was wrong.
So it seems that somehow my desktop shortcuts have been corrupted.
A few days ago all my program files had turned to LNK files. In startup folder, I discovered a file called "monitor lnk files"with unknown publisher and associated with one of my printers which HP 1510 which I had previously removed. When I unchecked it( I couldn't delete it), the lnk extensions all went away

I was using my friend's laptop to work from it but all the files and folders in my USB device have become shortcuts. Every device that is plugged in will end up with the same fate. To clean them, I have to scan them on another computer and reset the attribute from the Command Prompt. Avast scan results will always yield infected .exe files with a long name.

Hello,

To be able to use custom tiles on the Start Menu, I make .bat files of .exe files to use them as shortcuts to launch the .exe files. I make the .bat file by opening Notepad, pasting the directory path of the .exe file in quotes, and then save it as a .bat file. This usually works perfectly for many .exe files in my case.

However, there are 2 GOG games .exe files that simply don't launch when using a .bat file as a shortcut. One game (Spelunky) gives an error ("Error generating config file") and another one (Stardew Valley) simply doesn't launch when double-clicking its associated .bat file (it shows in the logs that it has crashed). Launching the games by double-clicking the .exe files works perfectly and I've double checked the directory paths that I've put in the .bat files.

What could possibly be the cause of this?

Hello, I have a 32GB Kingston USB that has been given me problems lately.

Everytime I try to put a folder or a file or anything in it, when I put it on another pc, those files are transformed into shortcuts so I cant really open them at all.

For days now I cannot open any of my shortcut icons on the Desktop, nor will my jumpdrive file name (Dble click on it) open in the [save as] box to look in a file or save one, like I've done 100 times b-4.

What can cause this, it's really exasperating.

I've spent "Hours' searching Microsoft & Sony help sites, they are very UNprofessional.
Not a word about it.

Grateful for your help, Josh in Orlando.

Answer:Can't Open any shortcuts or files=weird?

A shortcut to a jumpdrive, or any removable storage media, is not usually guaranteed that it will be the same drive letter the next time you plug the jumpdrive back in.

Sounds to me like that is what might be your problem.

If the shortcut was initially made when the jumpdrive was drive letter E: and then, because you may have other devices installed and E: was already in use, the jumpdrive will now be the next open drive letter. (Perhaps F:? perhaps G:? perhaps up to Z:?)

Any shourtcuts that pointed to the old drive letter are now invalid.

1) i right click on the desktop, create shortcut
2) i select an internet shortcut (.url file) as the target location
3) the shortcut is created, but the icon for the shortcut is the blank white icon
4) using the shortcut works correctly (firefox opens it correctly)

the icon SHOULD be the firefox icon. if i repeat this exact process on a windows xp 32 bit computer, it works as it should.

i've looked the registry somewhat, but i can't figure out what is wrong or how to fix it. :/

For some reason, when I place a file in the programs folder, it becomes a shortcut or asks me if I want to place it on the desktop. It used to ask me to just move and replace if the file was identical. The files are identical but it's not letting me just replace. Is there something that could have caused this? I temporarily turned off UAC but no luck. Any help would be great. Thanks.

I'm trying to get my parents computer back up and running. It's been slow for awhile but now it's almost at a standstill. After some investigation (and not much was needed) I see there are 50+ Internet Explorers, 15+ Add/Remove Programs, Etc. We took it to a computer place and they advised they removed 4,000+ duplicates but the remaining 17,000+ would be largely a "manual removal" so we should just wipe it and reload.

Well, isn't there another way? Plus, what will keep this from just happening all over again. I've got their information backed up (largely) but won't I probably just reinfect it (if an infection is what caused this?)

They claim it happened after Internet Explorer 7 was loaded through an automatic update. If this is accurate or not I don't know - they do their best with computers but their understanding is pretty darned limited! I ran Ad-Aware, Spybot, McAfee Stinger, Windows Defender, Defender Pro and the computer place didn't find any viruses/spyware either???

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanx for your time!
Tereza

I have a number of shortcuts on my desktop that when double-clicked respond with not finding the file using the path displayed. I have even gone to the file that the desktop points to and double-clicked it - with the same result. This has only started with W10 upgrade. However, there are other shortcuts that still work. Can you help, please? Thanks

Answer:Desktop shortcuts not locating files

Hello Bruce, and welcome to Ten Forums.

What are these shortcuts of?

If you like for now, download and merge the .reg file for the listed lnk (LNK) option in the tutorial below to see if it may help. It will restore the default associations for shortcuts.

When I try to open excell file through a shortcut on my desktop,
I have a +/- 15 seconds delay before the file actually opens.
If I open excel previously and open a file it does so immediately
I would appreciate help on this matter.
I have a very fast computer and 1Giga RAM

Sincerely,
Arturo Meneses

Answer:Delay Opening Files From Shortcuts

You would get a delay while Excel starts up and loads any add-ins. Presumably Excel is closed when you open the file from the shortcut, which would contribute to the opening time.
If excel is already running, it only has to open the file itself which is considerably quicker.

Any ideas?

In Win7 right-clicking on an software icon at the foot of the screen shows previously opened files plus some permanently pinned there. That's true for all my icons but one, for Serif Webplus X. For some reason there are none, even when I open a file and resave it its shortcut doesn't appear in this right-click menu. Previously opened files do appear within the programme itself under "File" but nowhere else in Win 7. Any one know what's wrong?

Hello,

Everytime a USB drive is plugged in all the files in the drive are placed in a hidden .Trashes folder. In the main directory there are the files are replaced with 'filename.lnk'. AVG triggers everytime and deletes the .lnk files.

My OS is Windows XP - 32bit.

I do not have access to a Boot CD.

I've been having this problem with my computer. I'm trying to burn a few back up audio Cd's. It has been working fine until a week or two ago. I tried burning an Audio Cd again and all I'm getting is the Shortcuts burned. The files on the disk are no more than 44bytes.

I have tried everything that I knew to do but apparently I'm missing something. It could be something simple I'm just overlooking. I have installed a brand new Burner already (probably a waste of money cuz of this problem) and I'm still getting this problem

I can't remember of any new programs or events that have been happening on my comp that could possibly caused it. I reinstalled XP, tried fixing the registry and looked at all the possible settings from my audio/burning software that I could think of and nothing yet. So I'm hoping that someone knows what I'm dealing with and is willing to lend me some advice.

Thanks in advance

Answer:How Do I Find Shortcuts To Files And Folders That I Created

shortcuts are system files with the .lnk extension (unless they are linked in the registry as a cls i think) the .LNK isnt visible under normal circumstances but you can still search for them. you just need to make sure you are doing an advanced search for *.lnk with the search hidden files and folders option ticked

This is a most unusual situation. The desktop shortcuts for applications works fine and when clicked they open right away. However, any other shortcut for documents or files takes a long time, like 45 seconds to a minute. If you open an Excel App and then open the file from within, it is immediate. It is the desktop that is a problem. I have checked the paths and they seem fine. I did a restore to before the problem and that did not work. I checked the updates and have the same updates on a separate machine and there is no problem on that machine. Nothing comes up on the virus scan and the malware check shows clean. I logged out of the computer as the user and logged in as administrator and a different user and the same problem exists. It is not user specific it is machine spacific.
It is a two year old machine with Windows XP. Software is Microsoft Office 2003 and there are a few other programs on the machine. It is a networked machine. All applications run open and run fine. I ran a scan of the hard drive and it passed. I have checked Microsoft's website but can't find anything like this. Surely there must be a reason for this all of a sudden and maddening delay. I even tried putting the shortcuts on the taskbar and they react the same way. The apps load quickly, the files do not. Help!

This is quite frustrating and I'm not sure how it happened but I'm having folder/file access issues on my D (data) drive. I've just noticed recently that any attempt at opening folders is greeted with a delay and a couple of folders are now empty where they weren't just days ago. When I double click on the now empty folders, I get the following message: "The disc in drive D is not formatted. Do you want to format?" I'm puzzled seeing as I haven't messed with any of the partitioning or assigning drive letters, etc (I haven't a clue how that works). Also, certain actions eg, deleting certain media files, backing up data, give me the following warning: "Cannot delete renders: data error (cyclic redundancy checks."I've scanned my computer up and down with no infections or registry issues of any kind to be found. I do believe the problem is my D drive is going. The strange thing is there are programs on the D drive that are missing, yet the shortcuts to them still open up the programs. Basically I can't get to them except by way of the shortcuts. How is that possible? Thanks in advance,- LTS

Answer:D drive files missing, but shortcuts work

Hi Lefky..! Your problem seem to be fit with this solution...please read and follow this instruction...* Solution 1The best way to deal with this is to never set user permissions or ownership on drives which will be shared between computers. You need to set group permissions and ownership because they will be retained across computers. Here's how to do this:1) Connect the hard disk to your laptop.2) Go to Windows Explorer, right-click on the drive name, select Properties, and then click on the Security tab.3) Click the Add button, type "Everyone" (without the quotes!), and then press Enter. Now click on the Everyone name you just added, then click the box which says "Full Control", and then click OK.4) Repeat step 2.5) Highlight a name other than Everyone (Owner, system, etc) and click delete. Repeat this with every name other than Everyone. What you want is the only name in the "group or user names" box to be "Everyone".6) Click the Advanced button, click the Owner tab, and change the owner to "Administrators". Then check the "Replace owner on subcontainers" box and click OK.7) Click the Advanced button again, check the "Replace permission entries on child objects" box and click OK. Once complete, click OK to return to Windows Explorer. You should now be able to connect the hard disk to your desktop -- or any other XP computer.* Solution 2The following error message may be displayed on your Windows XP Professional computer when you attempt to open or access a folder, but are ... I note a lot of my "newish" users place whole files on their desktop. 100's of megabytes sometimes.

I grew up in the days when doing this would slow the load time of your pc and use shortcuts instead.

What impact, if any does this have on todays OS's

Microsoft says - yes

Quote:
Don't store files on the desktop

To improve your computer's performance and find files more easily, it's best to store files in the Documents folder rather than on the desktop.

To access files from your desktop, create a desktop shortcut instead.

Am I worrying about nothing ?

Answer:Shortcuts vs Full Files on the desktop - what impact?

Hello KiwiTT,

The only impact it would have is less hard drive space if they were copied from another location on the drive instead of having a shortcut to the file there instead.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

My computer has suddenly started creating all my folders on my flashdrive into shortcuts. When I create a folder and save documents to it , the folder also becomes a shortcut. I have tried to delete the shortcut based on the Windows Online Help directions, and I lost the entire file. Noting a previous post, when I checked PROPERTIES, it shows an association to the cmd application. What's happening and how can I fix it?

hi,

I am facing some troubles on my hard disk.In my documents, music ,

but rest things on C drive seem to be ok.

I ran avg, it showed few trojans, i moved them to vault.attrib command doesnt work or seems to show no result.
Can you please suggest on how to recover my extremely imp files now?

i have tried file recovery softwares like recover my files and NTFS back up etc,
but they also didnt work for me. Mostly files are excell files(excell 2007).
They have shortcuts in c:\appdata\roaming\microsoft\office\recent\.. or
C:\Users\Rajesh Manchanda\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Recent.. but
when i click those shortcuts they say file moved/renamed and ask to delete the
shotcut.

I am so blank about what is the cause of this problem-- virus or something
else.
Trojans entered in my pc through windows update.
I have Windows Vista.
I need to recover my data as its very very important. Please suggest some solution asap?

I have 2 shortcuts on my desktop which I think are aimed at the same .exe file. If I right click on the shortcut icons and choose "properties", the description of the target is different on each one. One of them actually gives the address of the target software, but the other just gives a name, not an address.

Is there another way of finding the file address associated with a shortcut?

I had several hundred shortcuts in a folder on Server A.

The shortcuts all pointed to folders located within a certain folder on Server A.

Over the weekend, the IT guys moved all our data to Server B.

Unfortunately this broke all my shortcuts.

Is there a way I can fix them all in one step, or do I have to recreate all of them? Or, at least, is there a way to edit a shortcut path, ie, go in and change the server name from A to B, for all those shortcuts?

After I burn an audio cd in either Nero or Windows Media Player, it doesn't play in any other cd player and the files on the actual cd are only 1K shortcuts of the audio files I initially dropped into the burn list. I simply drag and drop the files into the designated area, whether its in Nero or WMP. The files show up as normal, actual files in the burning programs without any trace of them being shortcuts to anything. During the burning process, the burner takes same time to burn the files as if they were real audio files. Only after I open the cd in the file browser the file type reads "CD audio track shortcut" with a size of 1K per each track. This happens with both wma and mp3 files. What I have tried to do so far is uninstalled the drive in device manager and rebooted the computer thus reinstalling it. I have have no idea where to go next. I can't find the fix for it anywhere in the settings of both Nero and WMP and haven't changed any setting. This problem just began occurring recently and before it began I was doing the same exact steps I'm doing now without any problems.Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:Burner only burns 1K shortcuts of audio files

you're burning it as an Audio CD. technically an Audio CD doesn't have any files at all, but their tracks are often represented as files. Since the files are "make-believe" by the computer, and don't truly exist (and are, in essence, shortcuts to play each track) they really do not have a size.Don't know why it wouldn't be playing in other players. Maybe they aren't capable of reading the brand of disks you selected, or you forgot to finalize the disk.

Hi, I have a large collection of articles in various formats (pdf, doc, etc) that I want to organize in folders according to their topics (History, Literature, Art, etc). The idea is moving each file to the respective folder. Is there any way of programming the keyboard so that for example when I highlight (select) a certain set of files and press "H", it will move those files to the "History" folder, press "L" for Literature, etc. This would be a great timesaver to simplify the task. Thanks.

Answer:How to create keyboard shortcuts to move files

You can automate the copying by using Windows Send To feature.

You would need to add the new Send To locations, such as History.

For details how see: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310270
