Laptop 1545 won't start up past the Dell welcome page- Black screen with "_" blinking in top Left corner F8 won't work at all to restore or safe mode.

Question: Laptop 1545 won't start up past the Dell welcome page- Black screen with "_" blinking in top Left corner F8 won't work at all to restore or safe mode.

Monday morning- Screen pops up saying my laptop wasn't shut down right. That it had to run a test to shut it down normal- Test took about 3hrs to complete.
After test I could get on like normal then once I shut it it shut down and didn't get back on till later that night only to find I CAN"T get past the Black screen of death- the black screen with the "_" in top left corner. I've restarted it a lot to see if it would just turn on like normal with no luck. I CAN"T press F8 without having it beep at me I can only get into F2 and F12 and that is it. I know my battery is crap has been because it won't charge. I also Sunday night uploaded from malware bites web page a free download refreash virus protection again. Because somehow it went missing a few weeks before I did find that night I had to big viruses that I did get taken care of which were both trojans. I did get onto google.com a few times that night with having problems when trying to open the new window in a new tab- Fire Fox.- My mother also said her down stairs computer desk top was doing the same with google the day. So I'm wondering what is going on with everything. I've tried to get a email for tech support but no luck because they say that they don't do anything with my model number- which is only 2-3 yrs old. I've got a lot saved on the computer but can't get inside at all.

I need help getting something done I don't have any of the cds that come with the laptop. I do but somewhere I can't find them. I was reading others have this problem and have seen it could be from power ac adapter to mother board to just over heating- and of course a virus... I need to get this fixed asap. But just can't seem to get into safe mode or even restart the whole system-
I did do a virus scan Sunday night after deleting Big Fish games which I never used. I just can't find out what the heck happen.
Thanks,

Preferred Solution: Laptop 1545 won't start up past the Dell welcome page- Black screen with "_" blinking in top Left corner F8 won't work at all to restore or safe mode.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi Emilie2011,
Welcome to the Community, it could be an issue with the harddrive. I suggest you can start by running the Hardware diagnostics.
To run diagnostics press and hold down the "Fn" key (on the lower left hand bottom of the keyboard) and turn on the system,it should ideally bring up screen showing Pre-Boot System Assessment.
Another way to run the diagnostics go to F12 screen, scroll down using the "up" and "down" arrow key, choose diagnostics and press Enter.
If the diagnostics shows any error code/message please post it back.
Since your system is getting stuck on black screen with blinking cursor, you can also try to release flea power.
To release flea power disconnect the charger and remove the battery, press and hold down the power button for 30 seconds, reconnect the battery and charger.Turn on the system and see if it boots to Windows.
Hope this helps,
Thank You
Roshan.

I read all the responses to the exact question as mine as well as similar questions, none are applicable, as not even Safe Mode will load past black screen with "Safe Mode" in each corner, and at the top "Microsoft (R) Windows (R) (Build 7601:Service
Pack 1)". Thankfully, i had just recently backed up most of my files!  I want to get it working so I can wipe it clean and get rid of it. Please help, thanks!

I have a laptop with Windows 7. I was playing games on it today and suddenly browser closed. Then everything else closed and logged out and my laptop completely shut down. When I tried to turn it on again, a blank black screen with a flashing underscore "_" comes up and none of my keys work. The F8 key does nothing. I have turned it off and on many times. Please help!

Answer:Laptop won't start up past black screen with blinking "_"

StarJune,
Welcome to TSG.
From your description of the fairly normal but unrequested shutdown, this could possibly be a windows update that failed.
What type of laptop is it? Do you have the Operating System disk? If not you can and probably should order one from the manufacturer.
Take a look at http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/What-are-the-system-recovery-options-in-Windows-7

I would attempt a Startup Repair first, then try System Restore.

Hi, and welcome to TSF.

Firstly: try to boot in Safe mode ( Press F8 during startup and select safemode) Does it boot normaly now?

Also: when pressing F8 during startup you could also get the option to "Repair your computer". Click that and go to startup repair.

I'm trying to fix my brother's computer after he opened a trojan attached to an email. The email was the one saying your credit card had been charged for airline tickets.

"Warning! Spyware detected on your computer! Install an antivirus or spyware remover to clean your computer."

There are no icons visible. The only action I can perform is CTL-ALT-DEL to bring up the Windows Task Manager. I told my brother to start in Safe Mode from which he scanned the computer using AVG Free Edition which was installed before the infection. This did not fix the problem.

Starting Safe Mode I now get a black screen with Safe Mode in the corners and the operating system name at top. The blue login screen then comes up with Administrator and my brothers account. I click on Administrator and I get the same black screen as before with Safe Mode in the corners and the writing at top. My brothers account does the same. There are no icons or Start button visible.

Again, the only program I can bring up is the Windows Task Manager. Using that, I managed to install and run SmitfraudFix which was given as a solution to "Spyware detected" screen. After rebooting this did not fix the problem. I also installed SpyHunter 3.5.11 which found Zlob.Trojan, Rogue.AntivirusXP 2008 plus some other ... Read more

Hello , my computer won't start up to windows . I do not have the cd to restore my computer . I have a compaq windows xp computer . I believe it has to do something with a program called norton ghost that I was running , it froze so I restarted the computer and I chose to start windows normally . The blank screen then came up with the blinking cursor on the top left corner . Is there any possible way I can fix this problem myself ?

Answer:Blank black screen with blinking cursor at top left corner

Norton Ghost is a Clone/Imaging software to clone your existing HDD to a different HDD. What exactly were you trying to do?

Boot off of the Windows Disc Or download the Recovery Console ISO. Burn it to CD with IMGBurn Boot off of the CD and get to the Recovery Console. Here type chkdsk /R and press enter. Disk Check Outside Windows (Windows XP) The Check Disk utility will try and fix any file errors.
You can also download the ISO image for Seatools, or DriveFitness in my signature and burn the image to a CD using IMGBurn also in my signature and boot off of the newly created CD and run the Quick and Advanced tests on the HDD to test the integrity of the drive.

What to do to repair windows 10?
Please advice.

Answer:black screen with blinking line in upper left corner

Hi, suggests it's not seeing your disk at all - nothing to boot from.

Check your connections, check your disk - e.g. using a live boot disk or connect it to another PC.

If you can manage to read it again, run chkdsk on it.

Hi, I am having a problem with my newer computer, I just got this rig a few months ago and never had a problem until last Thursday. It Blue Screened on me while I was installing ARC GIS 10.1. From then on it randomly crashes. (I have previously installed ARC GIS 10 and never had a problem.)

I keep things updated (windows and drivers) and I do think windows forced through an update earlier that day. I un installed ARC GIS 10.1 and the windows update, didn't make any difference. I have also ran the Windows Mem test and Auslogic BoostSpeed/ Registry repair. I keep getting "Bad Pool Header" and "Page In Nonpage Area" and I can't seem to find something that triggers it. So far it hasn't crashed in Safe Mode without network access. I tried it once with access and it crashed. Currently have windows checking the drives for errors ( I have 4).

I think I attached the proper dump files. This is my work computer so this is kind of causing a big problem. Thanks in advanced for the help!!

Answer:BSOD "Bad Pool Header" and "Page In Nonpage Area" Runs in Safe Mode

Welcome aboard.

The crash dump you supplied, suggests the display driver failed there.

Hi guys,

The other day I was using my old desktop and using firefox when suddenly firefox froze up while browsing and I was unable to ctrl+alt+del or click start or anything for that matter in order to close it down. I then turned off my computer manually by pressing the power button as I sometimes do when my computer freezes and turned it back on. Unfortunately, when I turned it back on the computer is stuck on the black screen with the blinking underscore in the top left hand corner.

I unfortunately am not good with computers and would like to avoid reformatting my computer, as this old desktop contains the largest amount of my media such as music and movies that I had been meaning to put onto an external hard drive. Furthermore, I do not have an XP installation disc and am unable to locate the system recovery discs that came with the PC (like I said, it's old, circa 2006, and they are most likely lost somewhere in the house or thrown out by now). Thank you for all the help and support in advance.

Answer:Windows XP black screen with blinking underscore in top left hand corner

if you haven't tried, as you switch on press the F8 key up and down repeatedly, if this works you will be at the safe mode menu - try last known good config. If still no go, try booting to BIOS - if this doesn't work I would say hard drive issue. Download the hard drive manufacturer's diagnostic program, this has to be burned to a disk. Then put the disk in and let it boot the pc and run the test.

I tried to reset my laptop and now when I try to set it up, I cant get past the "Hi there" settings screen that asks for country, language, keyboard layout, and time zone. I hit next and then use express settings and the computer gives me the spinning white dots and then reboots back to the blue "Hi there" screen. I can get into BIOS and have a recovery drive plugged in to the laptop, but nothing seems to work. The computer can't find the drive, or my admin password is incorrect, or something else goes wrong. This is very frustrating as I haven't been able to use the laptop for a few days now.

Can you log in to safe mode then try sfc /scannow from an admin command prompt. Its possible you have a corrupt user profile. You could create a new account and see if that fixes the problem. Do you have backup you can recover from? If not, you could try a repair install.

My Hotmail access is problematic. When I enter my login name and password, I get to a blank screen that says "done" in the lower left corner and cannot get to my email. I am running XP Home Edition SP2. I am using IE 6.

My son's and wife's hotmail accounts are fine. I can get to my Hotmail by way of Outlook Express, so at least I can read my email. I have not tried accessing my hotmail from another computer; I will try that today at work.

I can login to MSN.com, but when I take the hotmail link, I get the same blank screen and done in corner.

I used Ad-Ware SE to check for adware, spyware and it found a few things but that did not resolve the problem. I have deleted cookies and my IE cache. My Norton Antivirus 2005 scans found nothing.

Any thoughts?

Answer:Blank Hotmail Screen; "done" in left corner

Please download HijackThis. Create a folder at C:\HJT and move HijackThis.exe there. Run a scan and save the log file. Post the whole log file here. Do not fix anything since most of them listed there are harmless (some are system required). This program will help us determine if there is any spyware/malware on your computer.

I split your post off. Please do not post your log in someone else's thread.

Run these tools and then post a new log. Please post the WHOLE log from start header to last entry.

Please download Ad-aware SE and install it if you don't have it already. Make sure it's the newest version and check for any updates before running it. Go to this site to get the plug-in for fixing VX2 variants. To run this tool, go into Ad-aware->Add-ons and select VX2 Cleaner. Then click Run Tool and OK to start it. If it's clean, it will say Status System Clean. Otherwise, you will have to click on the Clean button to remove the VX2 infection. Also make sure to customize the settings in Ad-aware for better scan results. Run the scan and fix everything that it finds.

Download and install Spybot S&D. Run Spybot and click on the Search for Updates button. Install any updates if they are available. Next click on the Check for Problems button. Let it run the scan. If it finds something, check all those in RED and hit the Fix Selected Problems button. Exit Spybot.

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download Index.dat Suite to clean out all the temp folders. Run Index.dat Suite now and go to Tools->Settings. Then make sure to check the following: Cookies, History, Recent Documents, Swap File (if you have Windows 95/98), Temporary Internet Files and Temp Files. Click Save at ... Read more

Yesterday my PC crashed and now I can only use it in Safe Mode. I have been through the Windows self repair program which has done nothing. The first time it happened, it allowed me to start from a system restore point, but then it crashed again and now doing a system restore doesn't even let me start up windows normally.

I looked in the "device manager" driver section and it has an exclamation mark next to the "Consumer IR Devices" in the "System Devices" section and It says: "This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)"
Further details:
"Driver Provider: Microsoft"
"Driver Version: 6.0.6001.18000"

I click on "check for solutions" it doesn't do anything, and I have tried uninstalling and restarting the computer, and also the "update driver" option but it says windows has determined it is up to date.

Does anyone have any solutions for this? I have been googling for a solution for hours and haven't came across any solutions, apart from that it could potentially be to do with video card/drivers or RAM.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Lets try to diagnose, go in with safe mode and set up clean boot. Does that worK
How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7
If yes follow instructions to find the problem
If no
Go in via safe mode find out the necessary information about the driver then go to the website to download to desktop. Then install.
Follow this tut to up date the driver
Device Manager - Install Driver
If it cannot be updated in this way, follow to step 7 and go to website and explained above.

If you unistall the driver, you can use automatic update.

I am not sure if that is your problem, however.
You may want to go in via, safe mode and set up a new account.
Download Security Essentials
and Malwarebytes and check for virus and malware. Do the full scan and update first.

I accidentally pulled the plug out of my computer when it was in the middle of shutting down. Now that I've tried to reboot it, I get a screen saying:

Safe Mode With Command Prompt
Last Known Good Configuration
Start Windows Normally

Whenever I click on any of the options above, I always ends up back at the same screen, suggest the above options again. I've tried rebooting I again a few times but nothing works?

Any ideas?
Thanks.

I have an Acer desktop with Vista 32bit Home Premium edition with Service Pack 1 loaded on it. My computer was working fine yesterday afternoon (at least it appeared to be), but when I tried to boot my computer up last night, I could not get my desktop to load. Windows seems to boot up, as I can get to the screen with the user names to login. No matter which user I select, however, the screen just goes black with only the cursor showing. I have tried booting from the last good boot point from the F8 menu, but the same problem persists. I have tried booting in safe mode, but the screen shows up all black once again, except for the four 'Safe Mode' texts in the four corners and the text Microsoft (R) Windows (R) (Build 6001: Service Pack 1) at the center top of the screen.

The Repair Your Computer option from the F8 menu at startup is about the only thing I have been able to get open on the computer thus far. Startup repair can't find anything wrong with the computer. When I try to do System Restore, I get the error 0x800700B7, so it can't rollback to my restore points. I ran the Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool and it didn't seem to find any errors, although I couldn't view the whole report when it restarted because the screen, once again, went completely black except for the mouse cursor when it restarted.

I am at wits end and have no idea what to do to try to get my computer to start. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated, as this is my computer... Read more

Read more

I have recently been having this problem with my Compaq Presario Cq56 laptop. It used to be working fine for years and this problem suddenly came up a few weeks ago.

Whenever I turn on my computer it would seem to load but then when it frayed the starting windows screen nothing else happens. The screen remains black with just those words. An indication that windows would load was I the animation of the orbs coming together to make the windows logo appeared.

I have tried loading in safe mode but it would always hang on Class.pyp or ssomething like that. I tried system restore but it would only show the green loading bar and then the screen would black and nothing happens.

It seems the only way to have a chance of my computer booting is to do Primary Hard disk tests from the bios or System self diagnosis scans then try to load system restore while the windows 7 disk is in the drive but it's annoying to have to wait up to an hour or more to see if my computer might work.

I have tried some disk scans from the command prompt as well as a sfc scanthat seed to have fixed the problem but then it would happen again. I have also tried reformatting and reinstalling windows and that would work for a while but then it's back to square one. Of some one could helpe with this it would be very much appreciated.

I have four computers running Win10. On two of them the windows "Start" button on the task bar doesn't work. So I can't get to Settings or Apps. I can right click on the Start button and get the "right-click menu". All of the other task bar buttons work.

What's going on with this? It used to work. For a while it didn't work on my laptop, now that is working but on two other desktop computers it doesn't work. All computers have same Win10 version and latest updates (although hardware differs some between them).

Can I add the "Settings" and "All Apps" shortcut I would normally get left-clicking on the Start button to the Start button's "right-click menu"?

Hey everyone, here is my serious problem.

Unfortunately, I was stupid enough to let my "Free Space" on my entire computer get to less than 5 GB left. It may possibly have been at 4 or 3 GB, actually.

My computer then froze, and I went to restart it. However, it would just take me to the blue screen of death. I've tried booting it up in every way I could think of, in normal mode, in Safe Mode, with the "Repair Windows" option, and everything else. My computer will simply not get past the "Loading" screen.

On the blue screen of death, it does say "Check to see if you have adequate disk space", so I am guessing that is a big part of the problem.

But here's my question. How do I free up disk space when my computer cannot even run?

*Note: I've tried going on the BIOS and Advanced Start Up, but I can't seem to find any options that would help with my situation..*

Answer:BSOD: Cannot start up normally, cannot start up in Safe Mode, "Inadequate Disk Space"

Hi,

Use Ubuntu to free the space.

You can get it from here: http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download

Step #2 on that page shows you how to create the USB/CD.

Then once you boot into it (choose the option where it just runs off the USB/CD) you can use it to delete your files or to copy them from the Windows Drive to an external hard drive (Note: Do not copy anything to the Ubuntu Filesystem as it will not be saved on shut-down)

Regards,
Reventon

I'm a network admin for about 30 users. About 10 of them are having a problem with any new document in Word (both XP and 2003). A small hollow square appears in the upper left corner. They're unable to delete it, and it freezes the "File" button on the Menu bar. Sometimes it freezes Word totally. They are able to print existing documents opened in Explorer. Very annoying! Greetings, fayban.

I noticed 'fixmdr' in your list - is this a typo, or was that the command you used? 'Fixmbr' is the proper command. The same applies to 'bootcgf' - should be 'bootcfg'. (Apologize if these are just typos).

Looks like you've gone through the usual procedures - when you say you've installed another copy on a different partition, another copy of what? XP?

Hi all,

Every time I turn on my Dell Dimension 5150, I get greeted with "We apologize for the inconvenience... Windows did not start successfully".

My options are:

Safe Mode,
Safe Mode with Networking,
Safe Mode with Command Prompt

Last known good config...

Start Windows normally.

I have tried every option on several occasions... the windows xp logo comes up... then the dell logo comes up, everything seems to be running smoothly... then comes a black screen with a small flashing dot in the top left... and then I see the same"We apologize for the inconvenience... Windows did not start successfully" screen.

Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.

Answer:Can't get past "Windows did not start successfully" screen...

Have you added any new hardware just prior to this happening? If so remove it and try again.

Did you install new software or run windows update just prior to it happening?

Without much to go on it may be worth doing a windows repair installation. It sounds dramatic, but it will not destroy any of your data or files, just attempt to repair the windows os installation.

There is a step-by-step guide with pics here. Hopefully that will resolve your problem if windows became corrupt somehow...

My Vista randomly stopped working one day when I was watching a YouTube video. I thought "okay, whatever" and restarted my computer (a "hard-reset", also known as pressing the power button until it turns off). When it got back up, the computer wouldn't do anything except for the green-bar thingy at the beginning. It just keeps loading for hours on end, until it either does a CHKDSK or the screen flashes and it restarts. I am aware that many people had this problem years ago with vista, if the forums asking for help I read had their dates correct.

I know how to get to the Advanced Boot Options, I am currently in Safe Mode, and I have an intermediate understanding of the Command Prompt.

I don't have any System Restore points, and as I am in safe mode, I cannot make any. I also can't backup my computer at this point, and I used third-party backup software so I can't restore the backup with the "Repair your Computer" option at the Advanced Boot Options menu.

I had one small idea; I wanted to create a partition from my C: (or external J: ) drive that is at least 10 GB to install Ubuntu into. Unfortunately, I can't stop the pagefile thing and I have no knowledge of having snapshots at all.

I have a Sony VAIO VGN-NS325K Windows Vista Home Premium.

Answer:Solved: Vista won't start in anything but Safe Mode and "Repair your Computer"

If you've got a vista disc put that in on boot up and run a repair. You'll have to redo the updates.

Essentially what the title says: I was trying to fix my brother's computer because I kept getting a website redirect and I know something's wrong with his computer. I ran Malwarebyte's, Ccleaner, and AVG and they didn't catch anything. I came here after googling and seeing some advice to another person with the redirect issue, and did the run: msconfig: checked the safemode box in the BOOT tab. So I restarted his computer (it's running XP) and kept trying to restart in safe mode but it kept taking me back to the screen that gives the option to start in safe mode or normal. No matter which mode I chose, it kept coming BACK to that screen so I finally just manually shut it down. HELP! This sucks!

This is my first time being on these forums. If this is the wrong place to post about this, I apologize in advance.
Background on how this all started
vvvvvv
I have a hp pavilion dm4 laptop with windows 7 home premium OS. This laptop is about a year and 2 months old. Warranty has expired. 2 months ago, my laptop started making this loud fan noise. I checked the CPU's temperature through software and it was at 78 F (which i thought was normla). I decided to sit my laptop higher by stacking books underneath it. I dropped the laptop on accident because I was sweaty and nervous. The fan noise stopped. That caught my attention. Every time the fan became loud, my FPS for the games I was playing lowered. That made me mad and frustrated. I remembered once the laptop was tapped a little, the fan would stop and my performance would go back to normal. The tap eventually progressed into a light smack then to a hard smack. I smacked my laptop everytime this happened because of frustration (Im 15 and i do dumb things a lot). Last week, the fan just continued and would never stop. I didnt stop smacking it either.
Situation
vvv
So today, I tried to smack the laptop as little as i could and then my laptop froze. It stayed frozen for about 1 minute. Then I restarted my laptop. When it was rebooting, I saw a screen I have never encountered before; "Windows is Loading Files Screen". I waited patiently and the fan of my laptop continued to be loud. Then, for about a second and ... Read more

Answer:Startup repair after "Windows is Loading Files".Cant start safe mode

Welcome to the Forum.
It sound like the first problem is overheating. This can cause many more problems all by itself.
If it was my laptop I would take it apart and clean completely. I would also check the operation of the fan. (If in doubt replace the fan).
If you don't feel comfortable taking the laptop apart and cleaning I would take it to a shop.
You must not use the laptop until the cooling problem is solved.

hi I recently brought a Acer aspire one d257 -n57dqkk running windows 7 starter. I downloaded the latest Ubuntu desktop image and used a program to install it so I could test it before installing it. so in effect I could boot win7 or Ubuntu I liked what I sore and when I tried to install ubuntu I got a error install failure just after the partition settings of the install wizard. the computer restarted and when I tried to boot win7 it wouldn't start. so I run start up repair and let it do its thing but it came back with failure to fix. when It started it did the following. it loads the Acer logo and bios menu then blank lit up screen with blinking white horizontal line in top left hand corner and will no longer bring up startup manager or anything. has no beeping sounds at all when it gets to this point. I think I might have accidentally wiped the windows partition when installing Ubuntu. any help would be greatly appreciated. PS I have created. a bootable winxp USB flash drive using Rufus and set bios to boot from usb. but it has 3 options USB FDD,USB CDROM and USB HDD tryed all 3 USB options and it won't go past blinking line it worked perfect before Ubuntu install and the hard drive is brand new

Answer:blinking horizontal line at start up on top left corner help needed

It sounds like what you were trying to do is to dual boot Windows and Linux?

If that is true, Linux is very anal in terms of how you do this.

You have to install OSs in a specific order.  First, do Windows - oldest OS to newest OS, then you have to do Linux last.

Unfortunately, you can't just create a partition on your hard drive and install Linux to that.

Assuming no issues with the hard drive itself, I'd pull the data from it by attaching it with a SATA and data cables to another PC, then put your data on a removable storage device of appropriate size (USB hard drive, flash drive, etc.).

On this hard drive, erase all hard drive partitions and start over.

This is why I refuse to use Linux as an OS - sure it's nice and secure but that's only because there isn't enough market share for criminals to make it worth their while to grab the source code and devise malware or viruses from there.

It's a huge hassle to install, however, if you plan on using it.

However if I turn the computer off by the button that stops electricity going to my pc it starts up. I read that turning your pc off like that is bad for it so i'm trying to find a solution (if I turn it off normally by clicking shut down, the next time I turn it on  I get the line again). I have an HP desktop e9200z with Windows 7 Home Premium. I was on the internet, when my computer rebooted itself and took me to a black screen with a blinking cursor in the upperhand lefthand corner. It occurs before the welcome to windows screen. I can get into BIOS and the recovery manager, but I cannot get into safemode. I set the BIOS to the default settings by hitting f5. I also ran a repair, but it says it cannot successfully repair the system. Not sure if this matters, but I noticed this in the log

Problem Signature 07: NoOSInstalled

My son has a small Optiplex SX270 lunchbox style computer that I can't boot up. I can get into F12 and F2, but I can't get into safe mode. It will not boot from a CD. When it starts up, it appears to start loading the OS (Windows XP), but after a couple seconds the screen goes black and I see nothing except a blinking cursor in the upper left corner. There are no POST beeps. The only selection I can choose from F12 is number 5 (IDE drive diagnostics). It runs and tells me that the hard drive passes. Any ideas on what I can do to make this computer boot up?

Answer:Can't boot into safe mode or from cd, blinking cursor on black screen

Even though it says the HDD passes, i would say by by HDD. If your sure the HDD is fine, then your windows is corrupted and needs to be reinstalled, but when you do formatt the HDD first to make sure you have a clean surface to install on. you can try using something like Hirens.BootCD.10.2 to search for more of what is going on.

Has anyone tried to Start Windows 7 HP in "Safe Mode" using the usual F8 method?

When I attempt this, I Did Not obtain the usual "Advanced Boot Options " screen, = I have an entirely New Type of screen, I have not encountered before in either XP or Vista under the F8 option, it is a Window (rather than a black Dos type screen) that offered me a selection of the 4 Drives I have available on my Desktop PC, to Boot From =
1. 3.5 Floppy 2. HDD Drive 3. DVD/CD Drive 4. 2nd DVD/CD Drive,

This is of course a very useful addition, as you no longer need to change the boot sequence on your Bios Set Up to Boot from a DVD/CD Recovery Disk, you can boot from your hard drive as the First Boot choice and then tap the F8 key, on Start Up or Re,start, to select the Drive you wish to Boot from (Into which you have Pre, loaded your Recovery Disk)

However, How Do You Boot into the "Advanced Boot Options "menu (If you cant use the usual F8 method) if you have a need the start windows in "Safe Mode" (When in the situation that Windows does not Boot in the normal manner)

I have tried tapping F5 on Bios Start, = this provides the Vista type Black screen Giving you the choice to Boot From Windows 7 = or use "Tab" to select "Use Tools Available under F8" = except you cant select the F8 option with "Tab" (The option just disappears on selection)

Has anyone Solved this one? ......... Best Wishes to all.

Answer:Has anyone tried to Start Windows 7 HP in "Safe Mode"

I would try to hit F8 then select the hard drive boot and hit F8 again to get the Advance screen.

Product name: HP G62 Notebook PCProduct number: XG960UA#ABAOperating system: Vista I am not getting an error message or any message whatsoever. My computer was fine all day long til it started running a little slow, so I decided to restart it. When I restarted it, it acted like it was going to start up then it went to a blank screen with a blinking cursor in the top left corner. I have tried restoring the computer back to factory settings but there is no option for that when I press F10.

Hello,

I've been having this nasty problem since yesterday. I have no knowledge of viruses whatsoever so I am at a complete loss as to what to do.

I'm using a 7-year-old laptop and Windows XP. At a guess, the problem comes from my friend's USB. This is what happened: I inserted the USB and noticed a RECYCLER and some Shorcut to (1) etc. viruses. I thought this wasn't serious so I ignored it. An hour or two after that my Internet connection crashed (I don't know if it has anything to do with the virus). By checking randomly, I found out that gpedit.msc and my Antivir setup file also refused to run.

I then shut down my computer and have been unable to boot ever since. Every time I try to start up, I am faced with a dozen of "out of memory" pop-ups, all of them with "xxx" in their title bar. I tried closing them all, but new ones kept springing up. I opened Task Manager and found at least 20 processes named FONTS.EXE. I guess this was what caused the "out of memory" error, so I tried to end those processes, but they kept re-appearing over and over again.

The taskbar and the desktop icons won't show up. The screen is blank - there's just my wallpaper background, my cursor and the nasty error pop-ups. I can't run any virus check or do anything else.

I've also tried rebooting in Safe Mode, but it took me to the blue screen of death.

Another problem, my laptop's CD driver is out of order (as I said... Read more

Vista freezes with "pink screen," unless in safe mode. Problem persists after factory image recovery.

Windows Vista freezes with a "pink screen" and horizontal dashed lines. Sometimes after freezing, I'll get the BSOD and my PC will restart. The freezes used to happen about 3-5 minutes right after I logged in to my user account, but nothing happened up to about 5 hours yesterday.

Today, I wasn't even able to get past the login screen without freezing, so I went into safe mode, where I spent 2+ hours transferring the files I wanted onto a hard drive. My PC didn't freeze once. After I moved my files, I went and reformatted my windows partition of my hard disk drive with the HP factory image recovery.

But as soon as I finished that, before I could even set up my first account, my computer freezes (with the pink again). I tried going into safe mode, but it won't let me do that unless I have an account set up.

Help please! Thank you in advance.

Hello, I have a bit of a problem here. Last night my roomate was using my computer and kicked my surge protector off. The result was my computer wouldnt boot up. I played with it for a couple of minutes turning it on and off. Finally I opened the case and blew any dust out and tightened a few connectors. Turned it back on again and it seemed to boot up normally. I logged into my account and the desktop started to load up. The icons began coming up and then it froze. Control + Alt +Del would not work. So I manually turned the computer off. I attempted to boot up again and this time when I typed in my password I got stuck on a "Loading Preferences" screen. I attempted turning the computer on and off a few times hoping XP was just having an XP moment. Not the case. Next I tried booting in various safe modes. Right now I'm in Safe Mode with Network and it works perfectly. I tried to restore to a last known setting, didn't help. I did it both via the list after hitting F8 and within safemode. I played around with some account settings and now have it so I don't have to type in a password when logging in.

I tried booting up again, and now I'm stuck on the "Windows Welcome" screen. Its terrible. I've done virus and adware scans. Nothing has helped. Right now I don't know what else to do. I'm not sure if I have the actual WinXP MCE CD. I have to search for it, but I'm fairly sure it did not ship out with the computer. Obvio... Read more

Whenever I turn on my laptop (Toshiba Satellite L850D, 3 months old, Windows 7, 16GB RAM, 1TB Hard drive... [is that all the info you need in that aspect?]) it will load okay up until the log on screen. It will go from the Toshiba screen, to the "starting Windows" screen, then goes completely black, except for the fact that I can see the cursor. If I turn the laptop off and back on, it will allow me to use it in safe mode. I have googled what the issue could be, and the only advice I found was to update the drivers under "Display Adaptors" in Control Panel - When I tried to up date the drivers (named AMD Radeon HD 7660G and AMD Radeon HD7610M [if you needed that]) it told me that both drivers were already up to date.

(BTW, if someone has already asked this and it has been resolved - I apologise, my internet is playing up and refusing to load the other forum threads)

Answer:Laptop will only load in "Safe Mode"

Since you can see the cursor it should not be your Display adapter drivers. If the drivers were bad you would not see the cursor.

In safe mode go to Computer, right click the C: drive and select Properties. Under the Tools tab select Error Checking-Check Now button. In the window that opens leave the first box ticked and hit the Start button. It will schedule for next boot so say OK and then reboot. After the chkdsk runs, see if it goes further into Windows.

If you have a blank CD/DVD around you may want to create a Repair Disc before running the chkdsk. That is just going to the Start menu and typing in repair and hitting enter. Then insert a blank CD and follow the prompts. (chkdsk should cause no problems but it is always good to have a repair disc available.)

Hi there.

I've got a problem.

I thought that I had a virus on my computer, and therefore I installed a vcleaner, which told me to start my computer in "Safe Mode". I tried to do it with the F8 button during the start up, but every single time a blue screen was showing, and the computer restarted.
I searched on the internet to find another way to let the computer start in "Safe Mode". I found a way: to write "MSCONFIG" in "RUN". Then I could let the computer start up in "Safe Mode". Now I thought it would work, but it just got worse. Everytime I start my computer either in Safe Mode, Normally Mode or any of the other options you have in the "F8" menu it just do as when I chose "Safe Mode" before. A blue screen is showing, and the computer restart.
One of the buttons in the F8 menu make the screen stay so I can read what is on it. "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer" is written and many other things. Also something with the letters CHKDSK/F, what does that mean??

Please tell me what to do, so that I can start my computer again.

- xJohan

Hi, when entering the safe mode menu, I can't use my keyboard. I just have to wait the 30 seconds until it boots normally. As a matter of fact, pressing F8 doesn't seem to be able ot get me into the menu. I have to turn off the computer while booting so it goes there on next startup.

At first I thought it was because I used a wireless keyboard, but I tried it with a wired USB keyboard and it still doesn't work.

Answer:Can't use keyboard in "Safe Mode Screen"

It would be my feeling that if you are using a USB keyboard try a PS/2 keyoard.
Safe Mode loads fewer device drivers,
and USB wouldn't be supported.

I have a blue screen problem. Don't know if I should post it here or not but here is my problem.

I have windows 8. I updated to 8.1. So far so good. That is until this morning. I don't know if this is in fact a Windows 8.1 issue or if anyone has ever experienced this before. I turned on the computer. I got the 'Hi' message followed by the next message of windows getting my apps updated. I then had a blank blue screen with a 'start' in the top left hand corner and an arrow in a box pointing to the next page. On the next page I had APPS on the top left hand corner and a blank box. I typed in 'desk top' even tho' that is not an 'app' as such. It took me to a blank black page with a bin in the top left hand corner. It looked liked my machine had been completely wiped. This has never happened before and I tried to Google it but the answers given did not have any correlation to what happened to me...any clues anyone?" Sorry guys, I just reread my post....I forgot to say that my computer has been functioning as normal all day .. What I did was to turn it off and back on again and it worked as normal. The thing is, I don't now trust it and want to know what? why and is it something I need to address.

first of all, the problem we are having is not with the monitor, as we have just checked it and it works fine on another computer, so, that being said, here is our problem.

when we turn the computer on it begins to boot up, goes into the Windows welcome screen, then the screen flicks off (even shows the orange light like the monitor is not working) and it displays the message "burn in mode". This message is in a blue box and the rest of the screen is black.

If we turn the computer off and try again, the exact same thing happens.

sorry, I am not technical, so this was the best way I could describe what was happening.

hope someone can help

Answer:"burn in mode" on black monitor screen

Some motherboards have a "burn in" option. What is really happening is that the fsb [front side bus] is being overclocked by 5-10%

Have you tried to enter the bios and set defaults?

Has this always happened or was some hardware / software added or removed?

Is this a custom build or is it a mfg computer?

Help! This is so weird. My computer was frozen so I tried to restart it. I was re-booting it, but the "Starting Windows" screen was taking a really long time. I tried restarting it several times, it did nothing. I tried running the second option it gave me when i restarted, which was something like "run system restore" but that did the same, on a different loading screen. I have a HP Pavillion DV7, and it came with a "Quick Links" screen, before the startup, where I can access an internet browser, mail, calendar and skype. I am using that right now, so I don't understand why I can't go to my regular windows screen? I'm really confused, I tried pressing the delete button and f10 right when I started my screen, but it would be a black screen then my computer would shut down.... My warranty ran out last month, please help?

Answer:Can't boot up windows past the "starting windows" screen, can't run system restore

Re: Can't boot up windows past the "starting windows" screen, can't run system restor

Tap F8 while booting and see if you can get to safe mode. If you can, try a recovery from there. You also want to backup if you get there. Sounds like a failing hard drive as a first quick guess so scan your drive for errors.

Windows Explorer, right click drive C, check for errors.

Every thing installs fine but when it reboots for the first time the windows logo comes up and "Getting Devices Ready %" Then the screen goes black.
Ive tried:-To let is sit for awhile to see if it would come back and i get nothing after hours -I plugged in a Monitor with no response (also tried to close the lid to put to sleep and does go to sleep)-I shut it down and tried to boot to Safe Mode but it says Windows can not boot to safe mode because windows installation has not finished
I can boot to my windows repair and go to the recovery command prompt but dont know what to do. It seems like a video driver problem the laptop has a AMD Radeon HD 4200. if thers any why to install the driver before Getting devices ready? Please Help!!

Answer:Dell Inspiron M5030 Black Screen When Installing Windows 8.1 on "Getting Devices Ready"

I had the same problem and did this and it worked with no problem....The idea is to slipstream the updated drivers into the ISO/DVD. The drivers that came with the W8.1 DVD dont work well as I was getting the BSOD upon install.
1. Download Winreducer and install all 3rd party software it requires.  Look in the howto.pdf
2. Download the latest AMD Catalyst Drivers from AMD's site (not beta).  Listed as Windows 8 drivers i think.
3. Extract the files to temp dir.
4. Copy the files/drivers from the temp dir (packages\drivers\display\w86a_inf) and the sub dir (B149756) to the winreducer drivers dir (work\integrate\drivers\x64).  So in the x64 dir you should have the cats, msi, infs, and the b149756.
5.  Run winreducer.  Make sure you have handy an iso of the Windows 8.1 DVD.
6.  After you mount your iso, you will be taken to the options and features screen.  You will see presets, appearance, features....on the top.   Leave all options alone EXCEPT the drivers location under System.  Change that to x\WORK\INTEGRATE\DRIVERS\x64.  Dont forget to change the x to your proper location.
7.  Click finish.  Save as iso. Apply.  It will save the modified iso into the winreducer folder.
8.  Burn and install.
9. After you are done installing, install the FULL driver package you downloaded in step 2 by running the setup.exe in main dir.
10.  Thank me LOL

Hello all
First time poster with problem after peforming sys restore on win7 pro 64bit.
Was troubleshooting a problem w/taskbar not staying hidden, tried to restore back 24hrs to when a java update occured. Restore seemed to proceed normally, but upon restart, it boots normally to just before the login screen would appear, then the screen goes black and all that is visible is the cursor , which I can still move.
But that's as far as it gets. Trying to boot in safe mode, or repair mode ends exact same way - can't boot in to try anything
Any ideas??

Answer:Black screen at boot with safe mode, system restore, or repair mode

no one has any suggestions? I also triedtoboot to my win7 dvd to see if I could attempt to repair but again, it only gets thru the windows bootscreen then goes black with only the mouse cursor showing as before.

After browsing through many of the threads here I have decided to post my own as I am unable to come to any conclusions.

MSI, Pentium 4 1.9GHz, 2x60 GB HD (Maxtor ???), 2x256MD DDR-266

It wonīt boot at all - none of the F8 boot options work, which I have tried several times after recieving the following error:

Dialog Box Heading: WINLOGON.EXE - Bad Image
Message (not exactly): c:\windows\WnSxS\xxxxxxxxxWindows.Common.Controlsxxxxxxxxxxxx - bad image

I have used the Recovery Console to browse around a bit to see if I can trace what happened, find suspisious files, looking at *.log files etc. Nothing.

All attempts to boot (all boot options) result in the same situation: the regular WinXP load screen appears, then it turns black, mouse appears and there I sit waiting for the login screen. I am still able to move mouse, but no other actions have any effect.

I have had the machine for 2 years and never had any serious issues and I have kept drivers and Xp updated (except I havenīt installed SP2 yet).

Thanks for anything that might help.

PS! Reinstall is not an option (yet)

Any ideas?

well I'm not sure how much you know about me, so I'll start with the stupid stuff, Right click on the desk top, and go to properties, and finally to settings. Look at the resoloution pull down bar, it might be set to something like 16 bit, or 256 color if there is something like 32 bit, or true color set it to that. If it is 16 or 256, and there are no other settings then download the driver from HP/compaq, and reinstall.

Hello, I read here and attempted to fix this before posting. Your forum is so informative and I think its great that so many of you help out here as volunteers.

The problem when I boot up is I have a black screen with a huge pop up stating "WARNING YOUR IN DANGER" then smaller print saying like 'all you do on your computer is stored on your hard disc' .......and etc.

Okay, so I ran my EZ Antivirus, Ad Aware, Spybot (everything is updated and I run behind Zone Alarm premium). My system is XP.

I followed the directions from another thread and through that I already uninstalled PC Guard through add/remove. Then I DL LSPfix and saved it. I DL smitRem.zip and opened up the RunThis.bat file (only after in safe mode later), I DL CCleaner and altered the options as per instructions from the other thread. I also DL Ewido Security Suite and altered the additional options as instructed. I killed system restore then booted in safe mode. Oh yes and I DL Hijack This.

Then I opened the RunThis.bat file and finished the disk cleanup completely. Then I ran Ewido and saved report. Then I started Ccleaner. I reset websettings under Internet Options. Then I went to control panet>Display>Desktoop tab>customize desktop>Web tab>Web Pages>then deleted the entry 'Security'. Then I rebooted out of safe mode. Afterwards I ran ActiveScan online and saved report. Finally then I did the HijackThis log.

Please see below the reports from my ewido and ac... Read more

Yesterday I started having problems with my Windows 7 Professional 64-bit desktop machine. Here's the sequence of events I would encounter:

I would start the computer, logon normally, and about 3 minutes after I logged on my video would go black, monitor lights blinking like there was no signal, but the power to the system was still running. Each time I rebooted into normal Windows boot, the system would result in the same error.

I tried re-seating all my components to no avail. I also tried unhooking one component at a time, to no avail.

I started trying to diagnose the issue. Event Viewer logs provided nothing except for some generic error codes which I reviewed on EventID.net. I found that booting into Safe Mode worked fine. I found that doing a Clean Boot would result in the error. I found that doing a selective startup with Windows Services only would result in an error. I found that booting with Diagnostic Services only would result in an error.

I tried using a Windows 7 repair disc to repair my install and that didn't work. When I tried to do a full re-install over my existing install, my computer wouldn't stay on long enough for everything to finish.

Finally at 9:30pm last night the system stayed on with a normal windows boot with all services running (with the cd-rom unplugged; I don't think this actually had any impact) for a few hours before I went to sleep. I left the computer on overnight to see if it would last.

This morning when I woke up at... Read more

Answer:Black Screen upon Win7 logon, now result in "Windows Failed to Start"

Since the error did not occur in SafeMode where Win uses a generic low-res 600x800 video driver, but occurred in Clean Boot mode, where your hi-res installed video driver is used, I would guess the problem is a corrupted video/graphics driver. You might try looking for the latest vid driver from the manufacturer website, of your particular machine.

Hey guys I was on some porn site and got a nasty virus.

Following is a description of the virus:

- Black screen, cant see anything but a small icon of an standard application box, when I start in safe mode I get the words "safe mode" in the four corners like normal but still nothing but black screen.

- When I push ctrl+alt+del it goes to the normal screen but there is no option for "start task manager" its the all the other options. (this also happens in safe mode.

- If I push the windows key the start menu pops up for a brief second but goes away quickly, I cannot click on anything nor can I see anything but that black screen with that small pic of a application. I cant access the registry or run any programs.

What should I do?

I tried running the win 7 pro installation disk but when I click "repair computer" it says that this disk does not match your OS version.

I am running Win 7 pro 64gb

Hello,
I have an Acer aspire 5745DG with H2O Insyde bios (if that's correct).
About 2 days ago I left it hibernating. Today I started it up and after the Acer boot screen (where you can press f2 to go to boot settings), I got a black screen with two letter "Y"-s and that flashing cursor/line/underscore. Then it restarts and after the same thing happens, it freezes and it doesn't do anything.

I have tried to get windows safe mode by pressing f8 but after the letter Y-s come up it just gives off a loud beep.

Any help is very much appreiciated.

Answer:Windows won't start up after "YY" is displayed over black screen

It seems you had similar problems last month when you received excellent advice for Gregrocker that it does not appear you took. How did you resolve the last problem as you left no feedback?

I've tried F8, F2, and F12 to get to safe mode or startup options but all I ever get is the option to either start normally or launch repair. The function keys appear to do nothing. Launch normally doesn't work and just cycles me back to the two options again. Repairing just keeps "repairing" with nothing ever happening indefinitely. It will ask in the beginning if I want to restore to a different time, and if I click yes, nothing happens except that it keeps "repairing". There's nothing important on the hard drive that needs to be saved. I want to reformat, but I didn't get any disks with the computer, since it said I could use Dell Restore on my desktop, which of course I can't access now. Is there any free, safe program I can use to boot it up and restore? And can I even use a disk to restore if I can't access the advanced boot options to change it to "boot from disk"?

Answer:Win 7 Dell Inspiron 1545 won't get past repair screen

Do you have anything attached to the pc? Like printer, scanner, usb flash drives etc? including a docking station if one is used remove everything attached, other than your monitor, keyboard, mouse.

Then please try the suggestions here to restore the system to factory settings. http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/kcs/document?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&docid=DSN_362066&isLegacy=true

Good luck.
