Windows Updates fail to install an already installed update error???

Question: Windows Updates fail to install an already installed update error???

I had already installed, successfully I might add, a Definitions update for Microsoft Office 2010 (KB3115321). The Update already installed and now it keeps coming up with the same error unable to install update:
Definition Update for Microsoft Office 2010 (KB3115321) 32-Bit Edition - Error 0x80070643
I tried uninstalling the installed update and Windows won't do it returning an "Unspecified error" response. I have Windows 10 Home (32bit) installed and I cannot find a way to get Update, as you used to be able do, to HIDE the offending update. (THANKS Microsoft for removing functionality from Windows YET AGAIN).
I'm at my wits end with this. . I have asked about this problem before directly reporting the issue to Microsoft (Surprise surprise... NO RESPONSE. I'd get a better response from a brick wall). Seriously not happy; considering cutting my losses and reverting (AS I STILL HAVE MY INSTALL DISCS) to Windows 7 or moving to Linux. Way to go to p**s off users!

Preferred Solution: Windows Updates fail to install an already installed update error???

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer:Windows Updates fail to install an already installed update error???

Problem solved. Used the Microsoft Show/Hide Updates Troubleshooter tool. Why did I have to go looking for this? This is a useful part of Windows functionality... What were they thinking of removing it. then hiding the tool? (Rhetorical questions; I know why. Thank you Nanny Microsoft, but I'm a better programmer than most of your shiftless lot)

Hello,

I am having 7 Windows updates fail to install a system. All 7 of them come back with error 0x800f0900. The problematic updates are as follows:

(kb3000483)
(kb3031432)
(kb3004375)
(kb3097966)
(kb3060716)
(kb3033929)
(kb3071756)

I have:

1. Ran SURT
2. Ran the SFC Scan
3. Error is as follows: windows failed to install the following update with error 0x800f0900: security update for windows 7 for x64-based systems (kb3097966).
Note: All 7 give the same message.
4. Zip of CBS is attached, however, I had to remove most of the CAB files that were in the CBS folder, due to the large file size. If the other files are necessary, please let me know how I can get them to you.

CBS.zip

Thank you!

Hi all,
I head to this section on advise by a Moderator from the Virus/trojan/Spyware Help section.
After cleaning the machine from a rootkit I have this issue:
I removed and then reinstalled SP3 (twice) and after downoading the updates now my pc prompts me to install updates that appear to be already in the system.
The last update haunting me is KB2633952 (before it was KB981793).
After every reboot I have the yellow update icon on the toolbar (down on the left, close to the clock). If start the installation procedure it ends telling me it is impossible to install. I tried to download it directly from Microsoft download center and the result is an installation error: "update cannot be installed as a newer or same timezone has already been installed on the System".
If I search the system I find the update in these directories:
1) C:\Windows\System32\CatRoot\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE}
2) C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download\be9e26e54f7a2d73396715001d0e1e17\update
3) C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download.old\be9e26e54f7a2d73396715001d0e1e17\update
4)C:\Windows\Prefetch

Please note that the system now appears to be cleared from malware.

IE 9 is already installed. But windows update says that an optional update is to install IE 9. When I try to apply the update, I get error code 9C48. Attached are the requested files to troubleshoot the problem.

I have tried everything I could find on the internet from changing permissions in the registry to manually deleting files in the command line.

The sfc /scannow returned with no exceptions found.

Please help, thanks in advance...

Last successful update was on 15/07/2012, since then I didn?t turn on my netbook. 3 days ago I turned it on and had 11 important updates waiting to be installed. All failed over and over again. Been trying to solve this issue for 3 days and have done the following to no avail. Search box typed run and then entered msiexec /unregister , then msiexec /regserver
1. In Services, Windows Installer, already set to manual, clicked on start and received following pop up error, Windows could not start the Windows Installer Service on Local Computer. Error 5: Access Denied.
2. Changed Permissions so that users and administrators have full control on all HKEYs.
3. CMD: sfc /scannow ? Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.
4. Saved on desktop Windows 7 msiserver.reg and double clicked on it.
5. Downloaded registry repair software.
6. In the HKEY_lOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/services/msiserver, deleted enum.
7. And others I can?t remember.

I cannot do a fresh install of Windows 7 as I do not have the cd. It?s just me and the netbook, and no cds. Any help will be most certainly appreciated. I?m tired but don?t want to give up.

You've made some large mistakes, I'm afraid.
Is your Recvoery parttion still intact? - Check your manual for the Recovery procedures, and back up your data to external media as a precaution.

Then attempt a System Restore to before you attemtped to repair the system.

Then post an MGADiag report - I have a suspicion I know what the problem is, and that should onfirm it (or tell me I'm well off base!)

I've encountered an array of problems. To start, when I try to play an .avi file, real player and windows media player both encounter a fatal error. Thinking there may have been a windows update I went to update.microsoft.com to get updates. I was able to download all of the updates, but I could not install any of them. I tried to install them via express and custom updates on the website, via automatic updates, and virtually every other method I could think of. After researching the problem I came across similar problems with an array of solutions, including trying in safe mode, running sfc /scannow, uninstalling and reinstalling .net, shutting off and turning back on both automatic updates and cryptographic services, changing .dll files (lccwiz & pidgen), renaming the SoftwareDistribution folder, downloading one update at a time, and other things that I can't even begin to think of at this moment, obviously with no success, as well as running SpyBot, AdAware, and Norton. Below are some of the links that I came across to help with this problem:

Hi,
I have been having some recurring problems with the attempts to install some automatic windows updates.

Security Update for Microsoft Office Acess 2007
Security Update for Microsoft Office Outlook Junk Email Filter

I am not able to install these updates, maybe any other updates in general. After attempting the install the following install window says, "Windows Update encountered an unknown error." Next to it an error code 80070643. Microsoft provides a solution to the problem, by re-installing Microsoft NET. Framework. They also provide a link to the program NET. Framework cleanup tool that enables you to uninstall NET. Framework, and it's components.

I followed Microsoft's instructions to solve the issue, though I've been put at a standstill. I have used the NET. Framework Cleanup tool to uninstall NET. Framework and it's components (states that it uninstalls all versions, 1.1 SP1 1.1, 2.0, 3.0, 3.5.) Then afterwards instructed to reinstall NET. Framework, specifically in an order, 3.5 then, 1.1, then 1.1 SP1. I start with 3.5, then as the installation starts it says that to contiunue installation I must turn off or on windows features in the Control Panel. I do so and turn off all Windows features. Then continue and it again states to turn off features in the Control Panel.

I wasn't able to continue the process, and I am also concerned that this is the same error that made me unable to install Microsoft Security Essentials, (as t... Read more

Windows update stopped working after I restored the OS to the factory setup (using the built in one key recovery button). Windows appears to be working fine, but I cannot seem to install any updates (manually or through windows update).

Trying to install SP1 (for example) from the internet gives the error "Error_Install_Failure(0x80070643)".

Trying to update using windows update yields the following:
"To check for updates you must first install an update for windows update"
When I press "Install now", It tries to install this update, and comes back with the error "Windows could not search for new updates Code 80070643"

- I have tried using the Microsoft fixit related to this code, and the suggestions on the following two threads:

Update Error 80070643

Solved Windows Update Error 80070643

Any ideas as to how I might resolve this issue?
Thanks

The only 3rd party programs I have installed since the reset are CCleaner, Mozilla Firefox and Avira.

Hello

I am struggling to make my windows update run properly.
There are 3 important updates that I cant make it work, they are:
1- 2 of them concerning .NET framework 4 (KB2742595 and KB2789642)
2- Service Pack 1 (KB976932)

For the .NET framework 4 updates: windows actually do update them and says they are sucessfully updated, but when I check for updates again, they are still there. The SP1 is a little different, it does install normally, but when PC logs off to continue installation, it never goes through 14%. Then it restarts, says failure and it rolls back, aborting the update, so when I check windows updates again, if shows SP1 failure, error 0x80071a90.
I've tried many different things, like manual update, safe mode or clean startup config, none work.
Also, I downloaded SURT and installed it, but it seems nothing really happened.
Following Windows Update Posting Instructions
1- installed SURT, but seems nothing happened
2- SFC scan is normal; error-checking tool is also ok.
3- No errors appear on that screen. I will only find the error code for SP1 if I click on "View update history"
4- CBS.zip attached

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

EDIT = couldn't attach zip file because it's size is 20mb.

Answer:Windows Update - won't install SP1 and other updates- error 0x80071a90

I just found out that when I open 'msconfig' , there are many services stopped, including many microsoft ones. If I try to enable then and restart my PC, simply nothing happens, they keep stopped.

I tryed to manually start them through 'services.msc', some of them start to work, like 'Vaio Event Service' which enables my Fn key, but when I restart, every alteration made is undone ( I quickly notice this when I try to use Fn key in attempt to raise/lower the volume, after I restart).

I thought of virus/malware could possibly doing so, so I ran MSE,adwcleaner, spybot but the errors remain. Any suggestions please?

Hi there,
A couple weeks back I tried to connect my son's new Ipod touch to the PC. I encountered error after error, so I thought that maybe I needed to be sure my computer had all it's updates. There were 3 critical updates that failed when I tried to install them.

My system is Windows XP
Home Edition
Version 2002
Service pack 3

My automatic updates is on but the history shows nothing prior to Feb 26 (the day I tried to run updates).

These are the updates that failed to install:
Update Rollup for ActiveX Killbits for Windows XP (KB960715)
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP (KB961260)
Update for Windows XP (KB967715)

With the same error code: 0x8007F0DA

The only one that has installed in the past couple of weeks is:
Update for Microsoft Silverlight (KB960353)

I've tried to do a couple of suggestions on the support pages but I fear that they don't all apply to me. I don't want to mess it up more than it already is.

I'm not sure if this is relavent or not but, I had installed Windows Onecare months ago. About 2 months ago I had ended up taking my PC to a computer repair shop (I had a broken fan) and they uninstalled Onecare. After that I would frequently receive errors related to Onecare (according to Google - service excutable).

I figure that the first step to getting my computer back on track (and eventually my son's Ipod working) is to have all it's updates installed.

If anyone could walk me thro... Read more

Basically im using my old celeron pc at the moment while my AMD rig is offline and to cut a long story short i screwed up the HDD on the old pc which meant i had to use the recovery cd's to reset the windows install to how it left the factory..............5-6 years ago so obviously service pack one was installed so i had to install like 160updates altogether not including service pack 2, but anyway after installing service pack 2 and restarting i checked for updates one last time and it came up with 2-3 but they just wont install, ive tried rebooting the pc loads of times, tried booting into safe mode with networking but my modem didnt work in that mode for some reason so i couldnt try that.

Anyway heres which ones wont install
im fairly confident that by not installing the above wont cause me any problems its just the fact that i keep getting prompted that theres updates and if i turn updates off i get that other message saying my pc might be at risk so i cant win really! i just want these installed

It downloaded fine, but when I try to install it, 2 or 3 seconds and it says that the installation has "failed"My PC came with XP sp2 and I had already installed sp3, but I downloaded a photo editing software and as best as anyone could tell, it corrupted something to the point where windows would not even begin to startup, couldn't even start in safe mode.  It ended up that we used the XP disc that came with the computer and reloaded windows.  Everything seemed ok except the failed updates.

My windows 7 (64bits) show that there are 10 important updates ready to be installed.
They are essentially security updates for various components of Office 2007.
When I give the OK to update windows update run the update process then shows update install fails for all of them.
There are errors Code 52F, 89B and 643.
When I try to resolve the problem by running Fix It from Windows update help, it cannot run either, displaying error 0x80004005.
When I search this error it takes me to a window that is related to residential group sharing?
Anyone help me please.
Thank you.

Recovered 5342 Laptop 2 days ago. When I hit update and restart it attempts to install 238 updates (for 1-1/4 hours), then while installing it gives a failure error and uninstalls all it has done (another 45 minutes)
Help, just want to upgrade to windows 10. Do I need to do the updates first?

Answer:Windows 8 re-install, 238 updates fail

Yes, you will need to do all the updates in Windows 8/8.1 prior to upgrading to Windows 10. You also may want to click the link below and choose your computer from the list. Once on the site for your computers Drivers choose the OS (windows 10) and download all the win 10 drivers for the computers hardware. You could download them on your computer and copy to a usb key or burn to a disc. That way when you upgrade to windows 10 you have the drivers on a disk to install.

Hey everyone, I'm a college student with a Macbook Pro running Boot Camp and running WinXP natively. Just yesterday, I got an error right in one of my classes saying I had a corrupt system file and said to reinstall or repair. So, I pop in the WinXP cd and repair Windows and go through the whole process of fixing Windows. Once I get through it all, I go to Microsoft Update just to find out I have a ton of updates to install. (91!) I had to install Installer 3.0 and it installed successfully and I restarted. I go to install the rest of the updates and Microsoft update downloads all the updates and when it goes to update....they ALL fail. Every last one fails. All 91! I don't understand what is going on.

I heard somewhere that you need to uninstall all .NET things so I did that. Still didn't work.

Someone said to stop AutoUpdate and clean out the SoftwareDistribution folder and start up AutoUpdate again. Still didn't work.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Installer 3.0, thinking it might be the problem. Uninstall is fine, but when I go to download and install, IT TOO FAILS TO INSTALL!! So, now I'm 92 updates down.....

I was told to go check my update history on the Windows Update website. It has no record of any failed updates. I tried multiple times to install with failed attempts and the history has no record of me failing to install anything. So, that basically means I have no error code to find through that.

Can anyone please help me? I ne... Read more

I run Win 7 Home Premium with IE9.I am informed that there are 13 Windows updates to install but repeatedly get the message that installation has failed with Error Number 80246008.
I have researched this error and downloaded a program called Error End.However, running this program reveals several hundred errors which I do not believe so uninstalled it.
I would appreciate any help available to solve this very frustrating problem.

Answer:Windows Updates fail to install

This is the first time I've heard of Error End but a quick search reveals it to be a poor piece of software so I suggest you don't buy it and dump it.
In an attempt to fix your problem, I suggest you read this link and follow the advice given.
If you still have problems post back and we'll try to help further.

Hello,

I've been having an issue with installing updates for a long time now, but it was only one update that was failing, and I wasn't able to find a fix for the specific one anywhere on the web. I decided to check again to make sure others have updated, but almost EVERY update that has been given to me has failed, aside from the occasional one that does work.
I have attached three images. Two images are of one particular update that, in the past, has never been able to install. It's been failing to install since the day after I built this computer (Dec, 25, 2013)

The other image shows all failed updates in the past two days. Windows tells me I have 16 important updates, but it can't even get passed "Preparing to install". I waited about an hour, and it was still preparing, so I canceled.
If anyone has any idea whatsoever of what I could do to make these updates finally go through, it would be much appreciate. My computer has attempted to update probably almost every night since I got it (nearly 2 years ago). I want it to finally stop.

Thanks

As the title says, my update are not being installed for some reason. I tried multiple times. I even tried doing in it from the Windows Update site, didn't work either.

As a note, I recently had my windows reinstalled.

Any ideas of what the problem could be?

There are a couple of possibilities, but lets start with BITS.
It is possible that BITS(Background Intelligence Transfer service) is not running. Check to see if it is running. If it has stopped running then restart in the following manner.
Start > control panel > Performance and Maintenance > Administrative tools > services. When the services window opens Look to see i f BITS Is running. If not click "restart the service".

If this doesn't work post a reply and lets try another solution.

I tried the SFC Scan (Following the Windows Update Posting Instructions) and it didn't find anything wrong.
I've run microsoft fix it but it didn't help.
I couldnt seen to find the Windows Update Error Codes on my windows update, it's always green (after trying to install the updates but doesnt) or orange ("install your selected updates"), both which does not view the error codes. One update has not been successful so it cannot view the error codes at the moment.
Had to remove about 3 CAB files to make the file size smaller.

When I'm using the PC Settings app (Update and recovery) it seems almost all my Windows Updates fail with error 80200011. However, if I go to the desktop Windows Update and do the update from there, it succeeds.

Stranger still, if I check the update history from within the Desktop Windows Update, it shows every attempt to update and shows them failing. If I check the Update History from within the Metro app, it says the last update performed was on December 15th.

I have a Surface Pro 2 and I know that I installed the Firmware update from Microsoft around December 13th, so that might be related. Anyone have any idea what's going on?

Answer:Windows Updates fail from within Update App in Metro

hi, are you running windows 8.1 or windows 8? You may need to install pre-requisite updates through the windows 8 update software before you can use the metro update app. You could try and reinstall the operating system and see how that goes or if it still troubles you, contact the Microsoft helpdesk!

Did you try turning off the Firewall or uninstall Norton? Norton may be blocking the Internet Connection.

Answer:Latest windows updates fail to install

1) Do a registry scan using one of the tools like 360 Amigo System Speed-up
2) Clear your HDD from clutter using CCleaner
3) Scan your HDD and RAM for bad/broken sectors, the most affective option would be to download and use the set of tools called "The Hirens Boot CD"
4) Install all the essentials like all the latest .NET Framework utility, Direct X, etc AND update all your hardware drivers to the latest builds.
Try these suggestions and come back here if you're still unhappy, good luck.

When I access Windows Update 'Installed Updates' there is nothing there apart from Office2010, Adobe Reader, Silverlight and Visual C++ updates installed.

There are always three pending updates to be found in Windows Update: KB2977759 and KB3004469 and Windows IE9. The two KB updates will install, then show up in 'Check for Updates' repeatedly or occasionally fail and show error 80070002. The IE9 update receives error code 9C48.

Running Windows Update Troubleshooter displays error 0x80070003 - not fixed.

I've tried this: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/910336
All drivers are updated.
Also tried WSUSoffline.
I've more or less tried every solution that I could find over several days of trawling the net. At this stage any help would be greatly appreciated.

I got Microsoft .NET Framework 4 through my GPU's Drivers. It's a NVIDIA Geforce GTS 250. I was getting the 320.18 drivers (the latest) They were all installed without a problem.
Several hours later, I get 17 more updates. Mostly about security fixes and updates to .NET Framework 4.

Everything installs fine, except for two of them. Both are titled "Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4 on XP, Server 2003, Vista, Windows 7,".. blah blah blah.
I restarted of what updates it could install, then CHKDSK pops up after the restart and checks my C drive and finds nothing, does another restart, the windows updates try to install, and there's another restart.
Then finally I'm able to get on my desktop again.

Hello, Quick recap

Thursday I reformatted my pc due to long time issues that finally piled up. I installed windows 7 home 64bit from my original legit windows 7 upgrade disc I got when windows 7 was released. I've used this disc for this before and worked fine. The install went smooth and windows activation worked perfectly right when I booted up I was able to activate no problem. I installed my drivers and enabled automatic updates. Windows went through a series of 5-10 updates installing at a time then it had one big spurt of about 120 updates. All were installing fine, but a few were failing and kept re trying during the next update.

Finally I'm at a point now where the same 9 updates keep failing. I've tried running Fix it, SFC/ Scan shows no problems. System update readiness tool installs and finishes and still The updates fail. Attached is the CBS folder.

Error(s) found:
Code 8007065E
Code 800B0100
Code 80070490

The 9 Failing updates are

Problem: a whole bunch of updates fail to install (see screen printouts: http://www.techsupportforum.com/attachments/windows-vista-support/22531d1201173674-windows-vista-updates-fail-failed-updates.jpg and http://www.techsupportforum.com/atta...-updates2.jpg; you can add to the list the following: "Windows6.0-KB930857-x86").

I have Windows Vista Home Premium. I doubt there is any malware or virus as it's a fresh Vista install and I even ran a SpyEraser scan and a BitDefender Anti-Virus scane which returned nothing wrong.

I thought I found a fix suggesting to enter the following command in "cmd": "reg delete HKLM\Components /v AdvancedInstallersNeedResolving" but windows says it can't find "AdvancedInstallersNeedResolving".

Answer:[SOLVED] Windows Vista updates fail to install

Hi Tony

You've several threads with installation problems .. if these are all for the same PC, and it is as new as it sounds, running the Recovery Disks might be your most time-effecient method of fixing things.

For specific Windows Update errors, look in EventViewer & let us know what error code was generated -- the repairs vary depending on the error.

For a quick-fix try, however, you can try refreshing your Windows Update Agent --- http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?t=29407

That article contains the complete details, along with links to download the tools directly from Microsoft.

Best of luck
. . . Gary

PS .. never heard of SpyEraser ... seems to have garnered a fair number of lousy reviews, too. Might not be on the "rogue" software list yet, but I'll bet it ends up there. False positives, misses real threats, and then screws up the Registry --- http://www.security.ithub.com/articl.../200487_1.aspx --- I think it's possible you've been scammed. The safest path is likely a Nuke and Pave - just start over.

First some history.

This was my OH PC and he had windows 7 64bit installed and upgraded to Windows 8. Then did the free 8.1 upgrade.

After repeated problems I decided to reinstall the PC, Windows 7 installed with a few problems which were fixed prior to even looking at Windows 8.

Now I am trying to do all the Windows 8 updates so that I can upgrade to Windows 8.1 again.

However, Windows update KB3034344 and KB3032323 repeatedly fail and the system gets reverted back to before they were installed. I have tried installing these updates separately and even in different order. Nothing works.

I went onto helpdesk on microsoft and the tech guy couldn't do it, and repeatedly kept trying to sell the paid for $99 service. Then he said that he could help me no further and I would have to be up-scaled to the next tier of help, which is the paid for version. I repeatedly told this guy that I do not have the money for such a service, and as the last time I had problems with Windows updates the woman couldn't help and insisted that I needed to pay. Then my OH told me to try switching off my Antivirus whilst I install them, and it worked. (so I would have paid $99 for a tech person to remotely switch off my antivirus)

HOWEVER the problem this time is not with downloading them, it's when the system tries to install them, it dies.

I have tried the sfc /scannow command and it says there's nothing wrong.

I tried to manually reset windows update components using this guide: How do I rese... Read more

On 1 June 2013 I took my pc back to Factory Settings and did a clean install of Windows installing all the relevant important updates for Vista. My pc is now up-to-date but one thing puzzles me. My list of installed updates lists a significant number of updates installed in 2008. (Two installed on 21/01/2008 and 39 from 21/10/2008). I would have expected that all updates listed would have an installation date on or after 1 June 2013.

I would be grateful if someone could explain this for me.

Answer:Why do my installed updates list updates installed prior to date of clean install

Welcome
One important question, when did you buy the computer?
Was it after the installation date that shows, now?

6 to 9 months ago I found I could not download and run most Windows updates
At one point I did upgrade to IE9 but I returned to IE8
Now my main motivation is to once again upgrade to IE9 which I cannot do. The download stops about halfway thru process.

When the situation is at it's worst, I attempt to download updates and receive codes such as 643 and 8007371c. Some succeed and some do not. When I reboot, the "successful" updates are attempted, then stopped and backed out. The reboot procees will "cycle". I have to use HP rescue "F11" and system restore.

I have tried every suggestion. Some processes I was unable to preform ( for example: command prompt .. DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth ( "not recognized" ).

Answer:Windows Updates Fail / Cannot update from IE8 to IE9 / Vista Home Premium 32 bit

Hi John, welcome to VistaForums!

Sorry for the delay, it's been a busy week for me.

Let's see what's up here:

Export CBS folder
Click the Start button then click Computer. Double-click on the C: drive, under the Hard Disk Drives category, and then scroll down to, and double click on the Windows folder. Find and double click on the Logs folder. Right-click on the CBS folder, and select Copy. Go back to your Desktop, right-click on it, and select Paste. You should now see a copy of the CBS folder appear on your Desktop called CBS. Right-click on this new folder, and navigate through Send to, and select Compressed (zipped) folder. A new file, also called CBS (CBS.zip), but this time with a different icon, will be created.

Hello,

I am looking for some help with Windows Update. I have 11 updates that fail every time I try to run them. Every month when Microsoft releases new updates, I will typically have at least one new update that fails and adds to my growing list of failures. I am on a Dell XPS8500 running Windows 7 Professional 64 bit SP1 on an Intel core i7-3770 @ 3.4GHZ processor.

I receive the Windows Update error 80073701 when the updates fail. I have attached a copy of the error along with the Windows Update history showing the 11 failed updates.

I followed the directions on this site and ran the SURT and SFC /Scannow, but afterwards, the updates still failed. The SFC scan completed without finding any integrity violations. As the CBS log was too large to upload to this forum site, I put it up on Dropbox. The link to the files is:

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/d3c1fo8jc...K0hHNvDAa?dl=0

Any help with this issue would be most appreciated. Thanks!

Bruce

Answer:Growing List of Updates That Fail When Running Windows Update

Ouch! - you have over 200 missing Winning Component Keys!
One or two I can deal with - but this number is beyond a manual fix.
I'm afraid that a repair install is going to be your best option unless you have a Restore point that goes back to before the problem started.

Hello,
I got infected on 20 April ( last auto-update date from Bitdefender IS 2009) with something really nasty ! What does:
- doesn't let me access any known antivirus WEB sites
- block updates of Bitdefender and your tools ( I had to update them manually )
- Windowsupdate redirected to fake Google page

Bitdefender complain a lot about infections with Trojan.Heur.VB.xxxxxx ( some random numbers ). Even scan with BD in Safe Mode didn't resolved anything !

Some details related to logs:
- SuperAntySpayware run for several hours and reported some infections, most of them cleaned
- after that I run BD in Safe Mode, over the night and removed some other infections ( log not attached here )
- then MAMB ! After installation, I couldn't run because BD was moving mbam.exe to quarantine ( infected with Trojan.Heur.VB.xxxxx). I had to install it on my notebook, rename the mbam.exe to mbam.bat, copy on CD-RW , copy on installation directory from infected PC and start it. Run first time, removed some infections, reboot then run again
- Combofix - couldn't run, with BD antivirus disabled . I had same approach - renamed to Combofix.bat and start. After small loading bar progress, BD just pop-up ( still disabled !! ) and after short time an error window pop-up ( see attached image )
- MGtool - see log - I had to disable BD to allow running

I hope you can give me a hint here !
Thanks !

Answer:DNS changer virus - fail to update antivirus or windows updates

Welcome to Major Geeks!

I can see the reason for your problems. Your logs show that your Windows Operating system files have become infected and there is no known reliable fix for this. In addition there are many many other infected files. We could spend a lot of time trying to remove this infection, but odds are that it will not work because the nature of the infection has so many executable system files infected that as soon as we fix one file, other files that are infected will almost immediately or upon the next reboot, just reinfect the files. In addition, your PC would still basically be unreliable/untrustworthy even if we manage to fix the infected files that we can see since there could be many more that we are not seeing.

The safest thing for you to do is backup your personal data immediately since your PC could possible become unbootable at any point in time. Do not back up any executable files. This includes programs that you have downloaded since any of them could be infected.

Once you backup, you need to delete all partitions, repartition, format partitions and reinstall Windows.

Hi there,

I was wondering if someone could help me. I recently did a windows 7 repair install and tried to update. I found that the updates would install after my computer is shut down but everytime I boot up I get the failed to install windows updates, reverting changes. I have microsoft security essentials and malwarebytes anti-malware home premium edition. Updates never seem to be installed when I manually choose to update them using the windows updater rather than waiting for it to update when I shut down the computer. So I'm worried I might be infected with something preventing me from getting any windows updates.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for your time and effort in advance!

Here's the story behind this:
-Windows downloads and installs updates automatically
-While shutting down, computer says installing updates
-While booting back up, it says configuring updates
-Hangs at a certain percent (Don't remember which exactly)
-"Failure to install updates. Reverting changes..."
At this point, it seemed to have froze. So I had to manually shut down the computer.
-When it starts up again, Windows automatic repair starts up
-Automatic repair fails, and offers to restore computer to an earlier date
-Choose to restore; restore fails
-Tries to auto repair again, and fails again; this time, offers different boot options
-Choose to boot in safe mode; safe mode works
-Choose restart option through ctrl+alt+del; reboots normally, everything seems to be working.
But when I shut down the computer, it goes through the auto repair loop again.
So far I've been restarting after booting into safe mode to have my computer work normally; I'd put it into sleep mode when I'm off of it. But I'd like to fix this problem and possibly get my security updates.
When I try to run sfc /scannow from cmd (admin), it states that another servicing or repair operation is currently running.
Help would be appreciated.

Answer:Windows 8 Updates Fail to Install, Automatic Repair Fails

By the way, this isn't the first time an update for Windows 8 has left me in repair mode.
The last time it happened, the computer's restore point actually worked. Unfortunately, it is not working this time.

Try System Restore to before the problem began. This might force Updates to install correctly this time.

If not work through these steps:

If these don't help check the System File integrity: SFC /SCANNOW Command

I've been attempting to work on fixing this problem myself, but so far have been unable to get rid of the issue(s) on my own. I came here following a link on a Google Group forum that talked about Google links redirecting to the wrong sites. The following is a break down of what is going on:

My wife and I recently purchased a new laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium (presumably the 64-bit version). We have not had Internet access for it at home, and so have not been able to run updates for the anti-virus and OS straight out of the box. The laptop came with a 30-day trial of Norton preinstalled. It's been connected to the Internet once or twice, while my wife surfed the web at one of our family's houses.

A few weeks after that, we were able to get Internet access within our own home. The first time I noticed something was up was when I tried to run a search in Google and clicked on what appeared to be a legitimate link for a legitimate website in Internet Explorer. The link instead directed the browser to another search engine with link slightly related to my original search topic. At that point I knew something was up.

After doing some research on a different computer, I realized that we've managed to contract malware that I'm not able to get rid of on my own, as it appears to reset after rebooting. I've seen a few other posts with issues similar to mine, and so I believe someone here will be able to help me.

I have updated Norton to the mos... Read more

I have Windows 7 Home edition; Microsoft updates are problematic, have had to download individually to get important security updates installed, not all have installed, computer takes ages to create a Restore point and then does not always succeed in reconfiguring at reboot after install. Got error code 643, Have Norton 360, tried downloading the Norton Power Eraser but this failed, and got error code 0x80070005, n44, n66.

Can anyone help? Spent last two days trying to install MS security updates one by one and the last two simply will not install.

Answer:Windows 7 updates fail, error code 643

Download and install Malwarebytes, get it up to date, and do a scan.  When the scan finishes, click Quarantine all.  After that boot to Safe Mode and do a full system scan with your antivirus.

If you still have problems after that, do this.
Please download and run Speccy.  After running it click File -> Publish snapshot... Copy and paste the link it gives you into your next post.  Then download minitoolbox and run it with the following boxes checked:
List last 10 Event Viewer Errors
List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions, and Memory size
List Minidump files
Copy the resulting log and paste into a reply here.

Good luck.

Hi All,
I have in the past week been unable to install updates on my computer (HP Pavilion P6000 Series), running Windows 7 64 Bit Home Edition.
I am getting error codes:- 641,   80070641,   13EC.
I belive that these errors could indicate malware infection or file corruption (Windows Installer). I have run Kaspersky Internet Security (Latest Edition) and also I-Obit Advanced System Care 8. Both these have come up clean, and the problem is still there.
Any advice or solutions would be gratefully received. As it is now 23:11 UK time I am calling it a night, but will check back in tomorrow morning.
Thanks in advance.

I have multiple security updates failing each time they install but fail to configure upon reboot. The error associated with all the failed updates is 80071AA7 and I have exhausted my search on the microsoft support forum and have tried everything from installing in a clean boot to installing each one separately from their site. They seem to install fine but when I restart it gets to step 3 of 3 in configuration and fails and says it is reverting to before the updates. Some people I read had a problem that their computer would not start and was stuck in this loop but my computer just reverts the changes and allows me to sign back on but has the same updates waiting to be installed again. Each time the monthly quality rollups are downloaded and installed the update fails about 80-90% of the way.  The system reverts changes back and allows us to log back in.  The whole process starts again the next time an update is installed.
I have tried the following items:
1. Installed the Update Troubleshooter
2. Removed all of the "pending.xml" files
3. Booted to a clean state and retried the updates

Please follow the Windows Update Posting Instructions and post the requested data

If the file is too large (8MB compressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file is below the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (the forum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)

Please also post the C:\Windows\windowsudpate.log file

I bought a computer from my college computer lab that was tested running in perfect condition, It is a Dell Optiplex 780, the second one I bought from them. I wiped it and reinstalled Windows 7. Updates took 24 hours to download and install, out of 238, 29 failed. it asks me to restart my computer, after another two hours, I get a "Failure configuring Windows Updates reverting changes"

May I add that installing Visual C++ 2008 and 2005 fail when any program tries to install it. Any program trying to install dot net framework 4 fails too. Any program trying to register dll files throws an error that the dll file could not be registered causing the install to fail.

The other Optiplex 780 did not have this problem.

Any ideas?

Good Afternoon!

I have a problem I am struggling with. I have had problems with failed Windows Updates for the past 3 months or so. I started a forum on answers.microsoft but this hasn't help - yet (the link is here Windows Updates fail - Error Codes: 80070643 and 8024200D - Microsoft Answers)

Short background - I tried the windows update troubleshooter and it did not work. I tried to perform a clean boot and install the updates, it also did not work. I was able to successfully install a few updates to the .NET Framework by completely un-installing it and then re-installing it (and double checking that it installed properly).

At the moment I have 17 updates that fail to install and they pretty much all deal with microsoft office 2010. The only two not related to microsoft office are:

Update for Windows 7 (KB2545698)
Update for Windows 7 (KB2547666)

I don't know what else to do and would really appreciate any help anyone could give me. I currently have Windows 7 Professional x64. I bought the computer in March of this year and have not made any major changes. The only updates I have are from Windows Updates and the last time they successfully installed (besides the .NET Framework I just fixed) was 21/10/11 and it was a hotfix for windows (KB2482122) problems really started around 19/07/2011 (more than a few updates failed).

Thanks everyone for your help!

Hello KDog,

Have just read through your post & referred to the "Microsoft Answers" link you gave.
The advice you received there is highly likely what you would get here.

Troubleshooting steps can be lengthy with little return in a situation like this.
We have had update problems here at the Forum where numerous pages of help / advice has been given with no positive outcome.

Please refer to the following 2 tutorials & see what you think.

Repair Install

Clean Install Windows 7

Have you a System Backup prior to your current set of problems?

Have you a windows 7 Disk?

Alternatively you could seek Microsoft Tech's Support.
I believe the email service is free.

I am unable to install updates on a Windows 7 Shuttle PC. There has not been a successful update since I first installed Windows 7 on the machine. The machine originally had Windows Vista on it. I Gparted, wiped the machine, and installed a clean Windows 7 onto the machine. Five months later, still unable to get a single update installed. I have had a wide variety of error messages in the five months including Windows was unable to check for updates automatically error 8007000e to the most recent 80240016. It says "Windows updates were installed: Never" and the last check for updates was 11/11/16. I left the computer run for an entire week as of today with the VGA Cable unplugged in hopes that it would be restarted for updates, which means that it took Windows an entire 6 days to even check for updates. The computer was not restarted and when I tell Windows to install the 976 MB of updates, immediately when I click "install updates" it failed as soon as I clicked "install updates" Trusted Installer says it is occupying more than 2GB of ram but the number does not change at all and is using 0% CPU. It seems that Trusted Installer is hung. If I end process on Trusted Installer, I get a "Operation could not be completed. Access is denied"

Does anybody know what the problem could be?

Answer:G580 windows 8 updates fail with error code 8007371B

hi parvaz,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

Can you try pulling up a run box (Windows key + R)
then type services.msc

You will have a list of Services, look for Nalpeiron Licensing Service or any entry that has Nalperion
Right click on it and choose properties.

You should have an option to stop it and choose the Startup type to Disabled

Now run Msconfig and  look for the Nalperion service and disabled it aswell Under Services and Startup tab.

After Restart Try the updates again,
If still failed
Perform a Clean Boot and try the updates again

Regards
Solid Cruver

Hello,
I hope I'm posting this in the correct forum.
I have about 100 PCs not able to install some updates successfully. Most of them ended up failing and most of them are failing at different updates. It only happens in two OUs. All the PCs are domain joined.  All the rest of the PC in different OUs
are able to download and install fine.
Should I check for a missing update? It seems like it started to happen when Microsoft decided to do a roll up update.
We have Win 7 Enterprise.

Try Post #3 on this page. Follow the wizard type troubleshooter. This worked for several people.
windows updates

This will reset as stated not delete all of them.
Windows Update - Reset

One of them should fix it or allow a reload or new download.
The downloaded file probably was messed up.
Let me know if you get it fixed.

Hey guys,
I've come across this annoying problem where, Windows Update can't update certain features/drivers. In this case it would be my mouse pad driver and integrated gfx driver... All I get is a notification saying it can't update. On the Windows Update window, this is what I get:
Once I click "Instalar Agora" (Install now), no second window appears, as you would expect from a third party update.
Any suggestions? This is really becoming highly annoying.

Answer:Updates can't be installed - Windows Update

Have you restarted the machine yet? Sometimes that fixes update issues. Also are you sure you're actually receiving an error... Driver updates in Windows 10 are delivered via WSUS as well now so you won't see anything other than the standard windows update procedure.

HP Pavilion a810n Desktop PC 64

1.Click start
2.Right click "my computer"
3.Click "properties" then the "automatic updates" tab
4.Choose "turn off automatic updates"
5.Reboot your computer
6.Go back to start menu and in all programs go to "windows update" you have to be connected to the internet.
7.Manually update windows.
8.Turn your automatic updates back on.

If that fails; I came across the following (you should be signed on as an Administrator:: <edited by Administrator>

As the title says, I have problems with Windows Update. I tried some fixes like: Reset_Reregister_Windows_Update_Components, Reset_Windows_Update_History, MicrosoftFixit50362 (which is a Microsoft Installer Fixer that couldn't install PowerShell), MicrosoftFixit50202. But what I really need is installing .NET Framework 4. I tried forcing it to install, installing it step by step, but it couldn't go further than .NET Framework 3.5. I need that Framework, the other updates don't really matter. And the interesting thing is that my antivirus doesn't say that Windows is not up-to-date, which is not normal, in ESET Smart Security, if Windows is not up-to-date.
If specs matter:
6 GB RAM
AMD Athlon ll X4 750K
AMD Radeon R7 240 4GB GDDR3
Vista SP2

Answer:Windows Update stuck at Checking for Updates and can't install Updates manually

Hi antoniu200:

Many other Vista users have reported that Windows Update seems to get stuck at "Checking for updates..." for long periods of time, and this problem dates back to the August 2015 Patch Tuesday updates - see my screenshots in ScousaJAY's thread windows update just seems to hang while checking in the VistaForums. This month's December 2015 Patch Tuesday updates required a full hour on my machine before it finished the  "Checking for updates..." phase and finally presented a list of available updates, so you might want to try running a manual Windows Update and leaving your computer alone for an hour or so to see if it eventually runs to completion.

You might also want to read Nikilet's recent thread Updates were not configured correctly in that same forum.  Some Vista users, including myself, received an error message this month stating "Updates were not configured correctly. Reverting changes. Please do not turn off your computer" when they tried to install the December 2015 Patch Tuesday updates.  Six updates for the Vista OS and one cumulative update for IE9 were marked as "Failed" on my machine after Windows forced an automatic rollback and re-boot of my machine.  I re-ran Windows Update today and all Important updates that failed yesterday eventually installed successfully ("Checking for updates..." still took about one hour and I declined one Recommended update KB3112148 for Vista and one Optional update KB3106614 for Silver... I recently (one week ago) made myself a dual-boot to Windows Vista SP2. I installed everything I needed and set the Windows updates to Automatically install updates. When I needed to make a video smaller (no need to talk about this in this thread) on Handbrake it said I needed Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0. I was surprised to see that. I went to see what Windows updates does and it wasn't checking for updates, as I set it to do. I started the check myself. I left it like that 30 minutes. When I closed my game, it was in the same state: checking for updates. So, I went to my .NET Framework 4 installer and, after 15 minutes, it gave an error: another installer is running. There were no installers, besides Windows update. So, I closed its process and let the installer run. After 15 minutes, it gave me an error (I don't remember the name of the error, I'll post it ASAP). So, I started researching, tried everything (MS FIXIT 50202, reset windows update history, reregister windows update components which gave me error 1060 and error 5 - error 5 is after trying MS FIXIT). I tried to "force" the .NET Framework 4 install by installing it step-by-step: 1.1  1.1 SP1  3.5  4. No succes. I AT LEAST need to install that .Net Framwork somehow. And the most interesting part is that my antivirus doesn't say that my OS is not up-to-date . SPECS: 6GB RAMAMD Athlon ll X4 750K 3.2-4.0 GHzAMD Radeon R7 240 4GB GDDR3

Answer:Windows update stuck at Checking for updates and can't install updates manually

Now it doesn't even give the error anymore. It just sits there and fake-installing .Net Framework.
