Registry setting to disable telemetry

Question: Registry setting to disable telemetry

Is there a registry setting that would disable telemetry to Microsoft - - without creating "Some settings are managed by your organization" problem?

Relevance 100%
Preferred Solution: Registry setting to disable telemetry

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Registry setting to disable telemetry

It might be easier and safer if you used one of the miriad of programs that are available for free. You could try this one and see what you think.

We would like to disable the usb selective suspend setting on our Windows 7 computers and can not find a way to do it without having to touch every computer.

Is there a registry setting or GPO setting we can change to make this easier.

We tried this registry entry and did not work. It seems it is only for Vista/XP

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\USB
Entry: DisableSelectiveSuspend
Type: DWORD
Value: 1 disables selective suspend mode. 0 enables selective suspend mode.

Thanks in advance for any help on this.

Answer:Disable USB Selective Suspend Setting for Windows 7 via GPO/Registry

*You can disable the USB Selective Suspend feature as a workaround by editing the registry. The USB device may become unresponsive because of a race condition in the Selective Suspend feature. The Selective Suspend feature suspends the USB device to efficiently
maintain battery power by enabling the computer to turn off the USB device. However, sometimes this feature may not correctly wake up the USB device. Therefore, the USB device is unresponsive when you try to use it.

You might want to disable this feature for server products where power management is not important or required.

*To disable the Selective Suspend feature, follow these steps:
Click Start and then click Run.
Note If you are running Windows Vista, click Start, and then use the Start Search box.
Type reedit, and then click OK. Registry Editor opens.
Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\USB
If the DisableSelectiveSuspend registry entry is present, double-click it. If it is not present, create the entry. To create the entry, follow these steps:

On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD.
Type DisableSelectiveSuspend, and then press ENTER.
On the Edit menu, click Modify.
In the Value data field, type 1 to disable the Selective Suspend feature, and then clicThanks, Swapnil Prajapati

how do I disable telemetry in windows 10

Relevance 66.83%

I have gone through seemingly endless forums and posts about getting Microsoft out of my data and it seems that nothing is a true solution - by the time the computer starts up again, it is back to factory "steal my data" settings.

I consult on a wide range of projects, and as such, I am in charge of a large amount of confidential information. Security settings and crash reports should be at my choice.

Is there any way whatsoever to set my computer from Win7-Win10 to not send any information out to Microsoft.

I understand that there is a "Limited" amount of data being sent when set to "basic" however, the interpretation of the user agreement by various organizations and firms is variable to what that actually means. Due to the vagueness of the agreement the Microsoft group has chosen to put out there, i am not comfortable with what I have and will continue to need to do on my PC with Windows 10 doing what can only be described as nosily tracking me.

Thanks

Answer:Windows 10 Pro Telemetry - Disable

Hi, two free programs have been designed aimed at changing settings to minimise reporting:
O&O shutup
Spybot Anti-beacon

These only change settings you can change manually.

Note one side-effect of changing some of the privacy settings is you may find a red message
'Some settings are managed by your organisation'
which is confusing and some find disconcerting.
(E.g. when in Settings, Privacy, General)

Sometimes this also means you come across a feature or setting that no longer works.

However these programs also have the means to change things back to default, so are relatively safe.

I would suggest
a. Turn system restore on (it's off by default in Win 10)
b. set a restore point before using them (they may prompt for this anyway, I can't recall)
c. don't change all settings at once; change some, check everything's ok for a while, then continue.

Note much has been written about the significance of non-personal reporting to MS, as you will be aware.

What's the most through and safest way to disable Windows 10 telemetry?

Answer:Disable Windows 10 Telemetry?

The safest way is to go through your privacy settings and Cortana & Search settings and set them up as you see fit.  I did this upon installing Windows 10 and that's all I did and most of the things people are complaining about, e.g., ads on the start menu, simply do not happen if you've tweaked the appropriate setting or settings (e.g., the "Let apps use my advertising ID" in general privacy settings for the prior example) to your liking.  It's not difficult nor is it particularly time consuming.  One can run through all the Privacy and Cortana settings in less than 15 minutes, tops.

I don't encourage anyone to turn off the system health telemetry, period.  All major OS developers have this sort of telemetry, and it's very helpful for catching "bad updates" on those occasions where they occur before they've been rolled out to the entire world and for improving little bits and pieces of the OS.  If you're really desperate to do that Spybot Anti-Beacon is probably your best choice.  Note well that this kind of telemetry is not new, not by a long shot, and has served its legitimate purpose for a long time now.  The telemetry related to building a personal profile on you for use by the Cortana personal digital assistant functionality is entirely new, and can be entirely turned off via a couple of switches.  If you had been using the Cortana PDA functionality and want to purge all "cloud memory" regarding yourself the links to do... I have read that office also does telemetry collection.

This can be seen, for example, here: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/...ffice.16).aspx

I have tried to search this and find how to completely disable office telemetry without uninstalling it. Unfortunately all I can find is how to prevent telemetry from windows update.

Can someone help-me on this?

Answer:How to disable office 2016 telemetry or how to check it.

A quick search of the linked documents shows the configuration options - https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/...6%29#configure

How to disable Telemetry and Data Collection in Windows 10

Windows 10 now comes with the telemetry feature enabled by default which collects all sorts of user activity and sends it to Microsoft. Unfortunately, Microsoft has provided no way to disable it completely using the Settings app for Home and Pro editions of Windows 10. Only Enterprise users can turn it off. Here is a solution for editions other than Enterprise to disable Telemetry and Data Collection in Windows 10.

I have been noticing lately a lot of people keep asking the same question on how to prevent the Windows 10 upgrade so here is a list of updates that need to be hidden in order to prevent the Windows 10 Upgrade or prevent updates that enable Telemetry, some of them are system preparation for the upgrade so you may not find them all in your updates list until a pre-requistie update was installed before.

If doing a clean installation of Windows 7 or 8, you need to scan the list of updates carefully everytime updates appear to ensure none of them re-appears as Micro$h4ft has been showing some of them again even if you hide them.

If you have already installed Windows and did a few updates, then head over to Control Panel > Programs and Features > View Installed Updates then go from the top to the bottom through the list to ensure none of them is installed, if you do find one installed, then uninstall it, reboot, then check for updates and once it appears right click on it and hide it.

Answer:Windows Updates to hide to prevent Windows 10 Upgrade / Disable Telemetry

Yes, I've kept a list of those updates for Win 10 and Telemetry and don't have them on my PC because I did hide them all multiple times (Win 10) and yet some came back over and over. Therefore I don't trust Microsoft anymore and don't have the automatic updates set anymore for at least 6 months.

Just checked them again against your list and all is fine here.

I just wish this had existed earlier.

So multi-user environment, xp, I need to set something for users by default and lucky its a registry setting. I'd not like to run a script in the background every time but set it once in the default user so when new accounts are created on the computer they get the setting.

Where?

I've always been told it was the default user profile hive %systemdrive%\Documents and settings\Default User\ntuser.dat

Nope I did that nothing

I tried hku\.default\ changed that, no to that too! Then create a new user log in with that user and they get the system default settings.

They key I'm trying to change is HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\PowerCfg

I'm stumped and searching isn't turning up either what I already though or anything useful.

Answer:Setting default registry setting?

If its a registry key, I am almost certain you need to create a VBScript ot BAT Script upon startup that will run and enter the key. Dont think there is any other way to do this.

I figured out why my video card didn't work. How do I disable my on-board VGA setting from the
Motherboards BIOS? Please help!

Answer:How Do I Disable Onboard Vga Setting

You will need to enter the BIOS menu when restarting your computer. There may be a message displayed on the screen telling you which key to press to enter the BIOS. For most systems it is one of Delete, Esc, F1 or F2.

When you are in the BIOS one of the catagories will allow you to disable the on-board graphics device. This presupposes that the motherboard doesn't automatically disable the on-board graphics when it detects a new graphics card.

This isn't a particularly long time and normally I would care less, but I use explorer often as I'm sure most of you do. Does any know the registry setting that sets this select item delay?

There's a setting in Folder Options where you can single-click files in folders and on your desktop.

If you're using Vista or 7 you can access Folder Options by opening any folder, press ALT to show the menu, then press Tools then Folder Options and select "single-click to open an item (single-click to select)".

Some how someone set a password on the Bios setting to a computer at the office. When I try to boot up now it will prompt me for the password. Apparently, the person who use the computer did not set the password and don't know who did.

How do I disable the Password. I've try flashing the Bios, but did not work. I need to disable the password first according to American megatrend, inc before I could attempt to flash the Bios. I've even try pulling out the CMOS battery, and reboot. still I get the same results. Do I have to leave the Cmos battery off and let it drain first and then try again to reset itself?

Any other solutions out there, please?

Thanks in advance,

Answer:Need to disable BIOS password setting

You may need to leave the battery out for a little longer, also, there may be a jumper near the battery that when set correctly then returned to normal will also clear BIOS settings. We would need more information on the motherboard to be sure though.

You do not want to disable the UAC. It is there for layered protection. With Windows 8.x.x now. It is very silent and just stands back in the background watching things. Just like a security guard at a job site.

Well I cannot find this entry at all.

Who can help?

How do I modify the registry to stop this?

In WinXP, how do you disable the option "Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings" using the registry or policy?

In SP2, how do you disable the option "Notify me if network connectivety is marginal or lost" (or something like that) using the registry or policy?

MS Sysprep re-enables these items, and I need a way to disable them easily (instead of manually doing it on every system).

I recently created a start up shortcut file that edits one aspect of the registry. Now when I start my computer it warns me of my start up file and asks me to agree to let it it run. Is there a way to prevent these warnings from showing up.

.

Answer:How do I disable registry editor warnings

/S option for regedit is a silent mode.

You either create a shortcut for regedit.exe
and then modify Target line on Shortcut tab of Shortcut properties
into something like that

Code:
C:\Windows\regedit.exe /S "C:\yourfile.reg"
and place it in Startup folder in Start menu

or create a batch file with the same content and put it in that Startup folder.

Did you mis-state what you did to the checkbox? If not you need to tick the box to not show it. I know this does not stop the original warning but if you or doing this before delivery it should never come up again,

Is there any way to disable System Restoration (My computer->Properties->Advanced Configurations->System Protection->Configure) using regedit tool?

I need to disable Automatic Maintenance on a lab of 20 computers. Is there a way to use GPO or a registry setting so that I don't need to go to each individual machine?

Answer:Can you disable Automatic Maintenance with GPO or registry

Which part of maintenance are you looking for stopping? They are run from the Task Manager. If this is a part of course work to earn a degree, you would be best to use your resources in creating a Batch and GPO that runs during boot as a script.

In almost every work environment, the systems are left running 24x7, so that any updates, etc can be pushed out to them. Automatic maintenance tasks are set at say 3 am, when no one would be using the computers. You are really best to just leave well enough alone.

Is there a way NOT to enable + disable Pagefile.sys through Systems dialog but with a Registry key?

When enabling from disbaled state it should take the previously (eventually in the past) set partition location and file size.

If this is not possible then pagefile.sys should be set to "system managed".

Be aware: I am NOT talking about just a deletion of pagefile.sys at shutdown but a complete disabling!

Peter

Answer:Enable+disable pagefile.sys in registry?

The registry value that controls the pagefile is "ExistingPageFiles" in the key:
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management"

I don't know what the value would be to disable the pagefile but I am quite sure that this will lose the previous values.

You can determine the values yourself by setting the pagefile configuration the normal way and checking what the results are.
Note that this is a REG_MULTI_SZ type as there can be multiple pagefiles.

The setting does not take effect until after a reboot.
Disabling the pagefile is not normally recommended.

How IE does to know if he has to activate or not a toolbar ? Is it in the registry ?
Thank you very much,

Answer:Enable / Disable a toolbar with registry ?

Yes, the settings are saved in the registry. Under the following
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\CommandBar
I uninstalled IE9 this week and not 100% positive but there may be a few in other locations as well, but I am pretty sure they are all located within the CommandBar key. Once I install the Beta back this weekend I can tell you every location for certain.

You can of course set the page file manually but in my experience it is best to let Win 7 do it automatically, and with the amount of ram you have installed I doubt very much that the page file is hardly ever used.

Also best not to play around with the registry unless you are competent and know what you are doing no offence to you.

Hi, i?m new here and i say hallo everybody, my question and maybe it is often replayed, is about HideFileExt, problematic.
i searched and i know from Microsoft that it is a security way that only per user you can set this reg parameters,
reg add "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Explorer\Advanced" /v "HideFileExt" /t REG_DWORD /d 0
reg add "HKLM\software\microsoft\windows\CurrentVersion\ex plorer\advanced\folder\hidefileext" /f /v "DefaultValue" /t REG_DWORD /d 0
but it must be a possibility to set all users with this option so that all used users that are logged in a windows windows10 for eg.
they can see the end of the file name. .jpg .txt. .pdf and so on.
maybe but sombody has just tryed to make any batch command to set all user with this?
i ?ve used the default user too but it refers only at the ones that is logged.
for ex. there are 3 or 4 users on PC now i want as admin to start a batch command to give
this option to everybody. It becomes only one and is the ones that is logged on.
has anybody any nice batch command to use?

Can anyone tell me where I can find the relevant registry values for certain folder properties? The folders in question are C:/Documents and Settings, E:/My Documents, C:/Windows and My Computer. These folders have recently begun behaving like picture and music folders; ie. they have folder tasks for viewing/editing pictures or playing music, rather than the default folder tasks for general use. They have also adopted background graphics that illustrate their supposed contents. These folders don't contain images or music files, except in sub-folders. No other folders are behaving oddly (as yet).Obviously, these particular folders are not customisable from the View tab or from their properties box, in the way that user-created folders are. How can I get them to behave normally? Assistance is greatly appreciated.

I have been searching around to see if there is a way to keep the setting within the About:Config enabled in Firefox for the Diffie-Hellman. I have some servers that are vunverable to the 'Log Jam' hack, but I have not controll over the systems servers to fix that since I am not responsible for them. I have been using Chrome to help rememdy this as this shows me the warning page before I proceed to the server's wbpage. This used to be the case in Fireofx before update 39, but that does not show me the ability of the warning page anymore and just tells me that this site is vulnerable to 'Log Jam'. I understand that the risk, but alow me to proceed to webste.
Has anyone found it so that you do not have to disable the settings in About:Config, or there is no workaround at the moment? Hoping Mozlla works on this, brings back the warning page for situations such as this.

Here is the means to fix it but only through disabling the setting in about:config, but wanted the means to get to the webpage: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1065417

we already do something simmilar by running a batch script that runs a .reg file to disable the back and forward buttons on ie6. is there a registry value that controls the scroll wheel functionality too? Id rather not do it by 3rd party software as I wouldn't be able to get it approved.

If you choose edit on it it will open in notepad and show you what it put in but it is most likely this one.

Subkey: HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Gwx
DWORD value: DisableGwx = 1

This one I believe is only off GPO on a domain (that's how i'm using it on 2008 R2 server)
Subkey: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate
DWORD value: DisableOSUpgrade = 1

Change the values of the ones you do have to 0 and reboot then you should get the prompt in a bit to do it.

So I've had this on going problem that I've had a quick solution to but I can't seem to be rid of it for good. It started out as me being blocked by something telling me that the administrator wasn't allowing me to access task manager or the registry editor. However, I came across away to fix this by downloading hijackthis and fixing an HKCU registry item that had set DisableRegedit = 1. But when I tried to run regedit.exe it still gave me the error. So I went back to hijackthis and did yet another scan, the file appeared again.. So this time as soon as I deleted it I quickly ran regedit.exe and was able to get the registry editor open before the malware had a chance to disable my access to it again. Once I was into the registry I navigated to HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System and found two REG_DWORD files there. One was called DisableTskMgr, the other was DisableRegistryTools. So I deleted both of them and tried to open up my task manager, but it still said no access. So I clicked on another folder within the registry and then back to the system folder again (to refresh the list), and to my surprise, the same two files had returned. So i tried setting their values to 0, the files quickly reset them back to 1. I tried renaming them, two new ones were created in their stead. Finally I just went into permissions for this folder and denied "Read" access to the "Administrators". Once I ... Read more

I am not any newbie when it comes to reg files. I use them, view them, edit them etc. a few I used in torrents for activation etc. I used the disable libraries reg file and it would work flawlessly on every Windows 7 machine I had. ...until I got one with 64-bit. I go here to obtain the file because the one on my external drive wasn't working. I assumed that there is something new that needed to be done because of some MS update. I search around for more information and found additional steps here about taking ownership of the registry key. but still that didn't work. I then searched this forum with no dice. I opened the reg file using the 'edit' context menu option just to see if I could figure out how to manually accomplish this task. still no dice. I am wondering if there is something else I need to do on a 64-bit based machine that isn't covered. or a better manual way of doing so. the registry hacks on the internet only disable them from the start menu, task bar, and some other open windows but windows like 'save file', 'open file', 'file upload' etc. in various applications including windows explorer itself still show the libraries. The 'include in library' is still present in all windows explorer folders. Now it's just harder to access libraries unless an app is trying to save or open a file. I want it removed completely. it seems only partially removed and only partially for several months. I could never figure out how to remove it completely. Please help direct me to... Read more

Do I just add MaintainServerList key? or do I have to also add Parameters subkey, and put MaintainServerList in that?

Answer:Registry Hack to DISABLE Master Browser

Hey tzr916,
I wouldn't just add those sub keys (there are other sub keys under Browser > Security & TriggerInfo) without checking to see if SMBv1 has been uninstalled. To check go to Control Panel > Programs and Features > Turn Windows Features On or Off ... Scroll down to SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support and see what's checked or unchecked.

Note: SMBv1 has been deprecated, so if you are running FCU (1709), it could be that SMBv1 got uninstalled and since the Master Browser is tied to SMBv1 those registry sub keys under Browser were removed as well.

Windows 7 provides a interesting feature which is called ?Aero Snap?. Users can move a window toward the top of the screen to maximize the window to fill the screen automatically or drag the window to the edges of the screen to resize and expand the window vertically instantly.
But some users don?t like it and want to disable it, so here is the tutorial to do it: 1. Type ?regedit? in run or start menu search box. 2. Go to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop 3. In the right side pane, double-click on ?WindowArrangementActive?. 4. Type ?0? in the ?Value Data? box and click on the ?OK? button.
That?s it. Now restart you computer and Aero Snap will be disabled. You can also use this registry script to do it.
If you want to re-enable it in future, just repeat the above steps and type ?1? instead in Step 4. Source

At times, you may need to find the Group Policy Registry location or the Registry key for corresponding Group Policy setting. If your edition of Windows 10 does not ship with the Group Policy Editor, you can make the changes, provided you know the corresponding Registry key.
If you need to find this, you have a few options:
1] Use the Group Policy Search (GPS) service. It enables you to search for registry-based Group Policy settings used in Windows operating systems.
2] Download the Group Policy Settings Reference Guide which lists the Group Policy setting agains its corresponding registry key. It has been updated for Windows 10 v1607 too.
3] Visit this MSDN link.
4] Use SysInternals Process Manager.
In this way, you can find out which Registry key a Group Policy setting modifies.

Hey all,

I have a question concerning windows xp pro and its default browser. Where does windows store this information (assuming it's in the registry). my goal is to set the default browser, for all users, to internet explorer wether the account is local or roaming. so in otherwords is there a way to set the defaul browser to IE and have that setting overide other settings that involve local/roaming accounts?

Thank you,
Jon

Answer:Default Browser Registry Setting? WinXP Pro

Yes, use gpedit.msc and set group user policies or computer policies. You can get the computer pretty tight that way. Without getting into the *whole Policy class* just type gpedit.msc into the start/ run and do some reading before making any major changes.

good luck

I want to provide a way to easily update the Sound Scheme to No Sounds in HKCU without having to navigate.
Why? Because I support several small business networks (from five to 50 users) where the constant cacophony of Windows sounds from computers in close quarters can become somewhat disconcerting, and stations where enabling of Windows sounds is appropriate
or required tends to be in the minority, so I prefer to configure each user to No Sounds by default and then let the user pick a sound scheme if appropriate for the workstation. Currently, this requires that I log on as the user, navigate to the Control
Panel  -> Sound and pick the No Sounds scheme.
I can handle creating a .reg file to be run once at initial logon, but I cannot see a way to get all sounds disabled in a .reg file without disabling each one individually. That is, while I can already see that HKCU\AppEvents\Schemes has a Default entry
that represents the current scheme, changing that value alone from .Default (or Afternoon, Calligraphy, etc) to .None in the registry does not affect the active sounds; that is, if I change .Default to .None, all Windows Default sounds are still active in
Control Panel -> Sounds, even though the No Sounds scheme does not natively include them.
Is there any way to do this without clearing the value of .Current from for each individual sound from HKCU\AppEvents\Schemes\Apps\.Default\.Default\.Current ? I can see how doing that could be a problem i... Read more

Answer:Registry setting for No Sounds Sound Scheme

Hi,
You can create a reg file to disable it. Just copy the registry code then apply it during the logon process.

It's confusing to me that I need to make this adjustment in the registry to get the option to work but even more so that all the threads I've read to enable about enabling the option has lead to folders that do not have the key that needs adjusting.  Anyone know what I should be doing?

Hi.  Anyone able to help?  I looked through the settings for the Synaptics app and even though the option for double tap context menu is selected nothing happens.  Single tap for selecting works though

I am looking for a way to remove the Navigation Pane from Explorer.  There is nothing in GPO that allows it and I have been unable to locate it in the registry.
