Dell hardware support question- XPS 13

Question: Dell hardware support question- XPS 13

Hello, I bought the Dell XPS 9350 Intel core i5 model on Amazon less then a month ago and it worked perfectly until I started noticing a very annoying buzzing coming from the fan with little pressure on the internals. I contacted two different del support reps and they both suggested sending it to the Dell depot. I already shipped it and it is en route but my question is regarding their part replacement. In the notesI requested that they only use brand new parts in my system and not refurbished or used parts. I have a good amount of doubt that they will do that but I am wondering if there is a way I can tell if they put a refurb part in or not? And after reading the horror stories of the depot if my laptop continues to have issues what steps can I take to get a full refund or replacement? (Dell warranty is good for around a year still, Amazon return is not possible anymore)

Preferred Solution: Dell hardware support question- XPS 13

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Does anyone out there have a solution to obtaining Hardware service for Dell products that doesn't involve someone who doesn't, or barely does, speak English. My system (4600) has a noisy CPU fan. After a 48 min wait I spoke with a tech for some foreign galaxy, but couldn't understand him (her/it) and asked to speak to a supervisor and was refused. I can and might go ahead and order and pay for a fan just to get the prob resolved. But I have a service warranty and shouldn't have to do that. Is there a stateside telephone number that I can use to speak to someone who speaks english? I'm disgusted with Dell's service but love the products. HELP!

Answer:Dell hardware support.

I used chat online with a tech on their support page recently for a DVD reader. Got good response but did end up on the phone and as you say it can be difficult.
First chat, I was connected in 1-2 minutes. Second chat, the queue was about 15 - 20 minutes before connection.
Hardware was to me in 2 days and fixed problem.

Im looking to add the pixelview play tv pro pci card to my dell desktop computer but i have heard that dell computers will tend to not support upgrades and other enhancements that are not a dell product. I was hoping to know if this problem had occurred with anyone else and if someone has already installed this product on their dell desktop.

- Please refrain from double posting

Answer:do dell computers support this hardware

Well, Dell will not support it, but by this I mean if you call Tech support they might try to blame that card for whatever problem you have. Other than that, it will probably be fine unless you maxed the system out on options when you bought it.

Your specs in profile are a bit vague, if you'd post your specs or your service tag, I can tell you for sure whether your system would be able to support it as far as power requirements and such.

I'm just about to buy a new Computer from Dell.Is the 3 year Consumer Hardware support package worth having.OR does it mean hours of frustration dealing with Indian call centres and then THEM deciding whether to send an engineer or not.Wold it not be best just to have the 1 year Base Warranty and fend for myself after.Any quickish response to this would more than appreciated.

Answer:Dell 3 year Consumer Hardware Support

Only personal opinion, but if the PC works OK for a year it is likely to continue for some time onward.I have no idea where support for Dell is based, but the general rule appears to be outside the UK.Support on this site is at least as good as you would pay for with a warranty and with the exclusions used probably more comprehensive. The only other comment would be that I have seen posts that indicate Dell use hardware which is discrete to them and may not always be available from other sources.

As I need a fairly quick response to this I am doing it in this panel as well.I am about to buy a new computer from Dell.Is it worth taking on the Dell 3 Year Consumer Hardware Support Package and having to face hours of stressful Indian Call Centres OR its it best just to have the 1 Year Base Warranty and fend for myself after that ?Thanks

Answer:Dell 3 Year Consumer Hardware Support Package

If the package includes accidental damage, take it.If not, stick to one year. And there no need to duplicate your posts.

Hi, Sorry if Ive posted on the wrong forum but laptops looked like the closest option. Yesterday I clean installed the Dell factory image using reset PC.
All went well but when I checked Reliability History it showed an unsuccessful application reconfiguration warning for Dell Data Vault when Dell Support Assist was installed. During Dell Support Assist installation there was an earlier successful application installation and reconfiguration of Dell Data Vault (version but that was successfully removed 15 minutes later for Dell Data Vault (version ...this was when the unsuccessful application reconfiguration warning was flagged. At the same time  a successful application removal message for Dell data Vault (version is also shown. Im not sure if that means now that I don't have Dell Data Vault installed.
Is this anything to be concerned about? Im not even sure what Dell Data Vault does. Is there anything I need to do or will it successfully update itself later on?

Hi all, Ive followed the instructions given to me by Tech support and gone to the link listed under my Service Tag where there is the option to download my Windows 8.1 ISO image along with instructions which Ive printed off.
I will be installing from a USB flash drive and the instructions to create the bootable USB installation media are straight forward and easy to follow using Diskpart. Then simply Mount the image and copy all files over onto the USB flash drive.
Im a little confused though when reading the instructions under How to Reinstall Windows 8.1. there are two options PCs with BIOS boot mode and PCs with UEFI boot mode. I purchased my Inspiron laptop late 2015 so it has UEFI boot mode with Secure Boot. Under the UEFI boot instructions it talks about disabling Secure Boot and for USB installation media set Boot order to Internal ODD device. I don't understand..a USB flash drive isnt an Internal ODD device as far as im aware.
So without doing anything to System Setup Ive tried inserting a flash drive, tapping F12. It says UEFI boot mode and Secure Boot is enabled and the flash drive is listed second one down underneath my Toshiba hard disc. It seems to me that I have to follow the instructions for PCs with BIOS boot mode even though my system is UEFI boot mode!! Am I missing something here?

Hi guys

I have two quick questions that I thought would be best served in one post

1. Does anyone know of any cheapish eBay switch(es) I could pickup which have full OpenFlow support?

2. I have a couple of Dell Power Connect 5524 switches and would like to hook up the 10GbE ports into my ESXi server and FreeNAS system, can I buy several of these:

along with the appropriate Brocade 1020 PCIe card (for the servers) and plug them straight into the Dell Power Connect 5524 (sorry I put PE in the subject title, I meant Power Connect!) or do I need SFPs for the Dell? Distance is less than 1M (same cabinet) - home lab for my own learning.

Ok I think I've set my mind on a HP ProCurve 3500yl, its about the cheapist switch I can find that has OpenFlow 1.3 support (and I can use it wiith HP VAN SDN Controller).

I wonder if anyone is using one of these switches in the lab?Click to expand...

The 3500yl is a great switch, very powerful. They are a little more affordable now that they are being replaced with the 3800 series. They run the same firmware as the 5400/8200 series switches as well.

After having been in touch with Dell support for nearly three months, I decided to recount my experiences here, mainly to provide insights for future Dell customers as to what their rights are, and to provide tips on how to effectively contact tech support.
I hope this guide can be of use for people struggling with their purchase as much as I did (and in fact, continue to).
Anyone having further insight to improve this article is welcome to leave notes here, and I will try to incorporate them in an update if deemed relevant.

I'm having some real issues with my Dell XPS 400 and I'm desperately seeking help. I'm running WinXP Pro and this pc
is only about 16 months old. It has the original factory installed ram (1 gig) , a 320 gig hard drive and the processor is an
Intel ViiV. I have been getting a blue error screen with ***Hardware Malfunction - Call your Hardware Vendor for Support - Parity Check
/ Memory Parity Error - System was halted*** that lasted for a few hours. I had to hold the power button in for several seconds each time
to shut it down. I ran both the Microsoft Windows Memory Diagnostic tests, as well as the Memtest 86 , each several times. The results were always
"no memory errors". I attempted a few times, unsucessfully, using the F11 key to reach the Acronis recovery partition. I booted using my XP
disk but was unable to re-install. Windows would begin to load and then the blue screen with the same error message would occur. Finally,
I was able to access the Acronis recovery manager and restore my pc but on reboot it began to run ChkDsk. Now it keeps rebooting and running
a new disk check over and over and over..........................I have tried to cancel the ChkDsk using the keyboard but it keeps running. I'm at a loss, as to what else,
if anything I can do, (besides ripping my hair out by the roots)

Answer:Solved: HELP? Hardware Malfunction - Call your Hardware Vendor for Support - Parity Check

UPDATE: I was waiting for the Dell hardware diagnostics test results to finish. It took several hours and basically the same result as the memory tests. No hardware failure, I'm thinking motherboard?

We are Dell resellers and had placed an order for 43 Laptops - Dell Latitude 3560 with Dell on 13th June, 2016. We delivered them to our customer on Friday 17th June, 2016. On Monday 20th June we discovered that all the Laptops are faulty and are not functioning properly. They have not been able to use a single system due to touchpad issues in the entire lot
We have made innumerable calls Dell to resolve the problem, but the team is unable to identify and rectify the problem.
We have spoken to our partner account manager, regional account manager, Service Specialist and Escalation Team, requesting them to provide us with a solution at the earliest as their work is getting hampered. Our customer has to deploy the same by 1st July however they do not have any Dell Laptops functioning correctly.
How do we escalate this to the Dell management and get a replacement ASAP

I shouldn't have to be jumping through so many hoops just to uninstall a program.  This is driving me crazy and I haven't found an answer online yet.

This is a General question regarding the end of support for XP. I realise at the end date the computer should be backed up in case you have to format the disc at any time after the end of the support period.

My question is does the built in Windows back up in XP when backing up the system include the installed updates? Or is it best to use third party software to do this.

Answer:[SOLVED] End ofThis is a general question regarding the end of support for XP support

I believe Windows just backs up your personal files and won't do the entire OS. You'll need a 3rd party program to do the entire HDD.

Also you really should think about upgrading to Windows 7. Staying on XP after the end support date is not recommended as you will lose security updates from Microsoft as well as patches.

My PSU is a 635W - this should be sufficient, yes??
So is the 1620 not compatible with this model?

I am no expert here, but it looks like the Update service is looking for a Recovery partition which may hold the WinRE tools.  On my current system, that would be partition 4 but it could be different on yours.  Running the command below in an administrative command prompt should show what partition is configured for the Tools.
reagentc /info
Have you made any changes to your drive configuration?  The reagentc info should show the same partition the Update Utility is looking for.

I got a DELL Inspiron 7559 in July 2017. The rear left corner is already pulling a part at the seam. It doesn't seem to be the hinge, but it does pull further a part when opening and closing the screen.
I called DELL support. Even though the computer is only 5 months old, this problem isn't covered under warranty.
Online, it looks like several other 7559 buyers have experienced the exact same problem. It seems unethical of DELL to have a recurring manufacturing problem and refuse to repair it.
Any suggestions on options to get the split repaired without spending $140?

Hi, I had a GPU fail in my Dell Vostro 1500 laptop. The card that failed was an NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS. The Vostro laptop actually can accept an NVIDIA 8600 GT card too. So I ordered the replacement part from Dell for the 8600 and they shipped me a refurbished unit.
The surgery to put in the new card took all night for hack like to do. I did not look carefully at the refurbished unit they shipped me as I was nervous handling the card (that I might break it).
But when I turned on the laptop after the installation, I did not get a pause at the BIOS saying “I see new hardware” like I did when I upgraded the RAM.
After the computer booted up I uninstalled the 8400 driver and then installed the 8600 driver. There was a snag at it’s possible that Windows automatically reinstalled the 8400 driver during one the required reboots but I KNOW that I wrote the 8600 driver over top at least (I had hoped to do a clean uninstall then reinstall but Windows tried to grab a driver for me).
So now when I right click on computers, properties device manager it shows the video as still the 8400 card. The 8400 card I removed has a sticker on it that says KU907 on it. The invoice for the 8600 that Dell sent for the 8600 says KU907 on it too.
I think I was sent the wrong part from Dell (I paid a higher price for the 8600 GPU) . Is it possible that a legacy driver is making the Vostro think it has the 8400 when the part IS an 8600. Or when I go to the Device Manager, does the computer physically c... Read more

Since a few weeks ago, my microphone has only been working when tilting the screen forward. I saw a previous discussion ( ) where people have reported similar problems. Although my laptop was still under warranty when I reported the problem to Dell, they proceeded to sending me an onsite technician with a repair microphone part who said that he could not replace just the microphone because I had a touchscreen (you would think Dell would have checked to send the right part), then a refurbished new screen that did not work at all on my computer, and then refused to solve the problem by arguing that my system was no longer under warranty (which it was not by the time they finally sent the non working screen and I called back to ask for another one to be sent—it was all problems from their side). Wondering if anyone has had a similar problem and if they were able to fix it themselves, as now my microphone is not working at all, not even when I tilt the screen.

I have also noticed the same problem for the touch screen. It only works when the screen is tilted forward, and I am afraid that, like the microphone, it will reach a point of no return. It seems to me that there is some faulty wiring from the screen components into the base. Any help would be much appreciated!

Dell Support "Assist" just ran without giving me an option to stop, pause, or control in anyway.  It was using nearly all computer resources (I could barely save the word document I had open at the time).  This isn't "assist" more like computer take over.

How can I control the S. "Assist"?  How can I adjust the time between it's runs (currently it looks like monthly)?  After finishing it's scan or whatever it finally closed (cuz it wouldn't close the 20 times or so I clicked the "X").  I then opened it, looking for some results of the scan, and found none.  How can I view results?

Right now, seems like worthless bloatware.

Also, there is not a [New Post] button on the Laptop Forum (at least for me).

My Dell N5050 laptop died and I tried moving the Harddisk into a old HP Deskpro. The disk boots fine but Windows 7 DELL OEM reboots as the windows picture comes up. It then allows me to do a repair but that doesn't help. The repair report doesn't give any clue to the problem.

I am guessing it is some fundamental driver that is Dell specific. Any idea how to sort it ?

The repair will allow me to get to a dos prompt.

Their is a excellent chance that the OEM/SLP key, drivers and a lot more are tied to the Laptop and will not work on the Desktop.

We have been working behind the scenes to optimize the [email protected] GPU client for the new NVIDIA GTX 4xx hardware. So far, it's been going well with us hitting some strong performance numbers. Question: Hardware support

I have a common rail injector tester, it has a atom based mother board. I need to replace it to install new update as this prosesser is very slow and does not support this new software update. I was told by the company to replace the mother board to Asus ht110 .but I have no idea how to do it, guys is there any way to by pass my old mother board and use my laptop instead?

Answer:Hardware support

I have a common rail injector testerClick to expand...

Is this a fuel injector tester?
Next replacing the motherboard and processor is not all that difficult. Really it is the pw connector, a few screws, hd connector and whatever case leads are used. If this tester uses a windows operating system, you are either going to have to clean install OR follow the procedure outlined at the top of the forum. If it uses linux, you should just be able to connect the drive and be done.

FWIW intel atom is pretty much junk. I have to use a tablet at work that uses one and it is a constant source of problems, "fixes" etc.

I hate to say this but it's possible that the modem burned out the motherboard as well. But don't get your hopes down. Try this, reseat your videocard and ram and then fire up your system and see if anything comes in the screen.

Try a spare videocard as well and see if that helps at all. Overall, im thinkin the modem took the motherboard to the grave with it.

Question: Hardware support

I need help. I know about computers and I try my best always to learn more. And honestly this sites is really good and I have learned so much, so thank you. But I am kind of puzzle over an issue.

i know i can get a definitive answer direct from hp, but for the time being i want to avoid sales people!

i've got a client that has an ml570 server (dual xeon 3ghz, 4gb memory, 2 hard drives in an raid 1 mirror), and for whatever reason when the previous support company sold them the hardware they didn't sell them a hardware support contract.

so, we're now in the situation that if the server craps out we have no leg to stand on from a hardware perspective. this causes me major concerns from a backup perspective because we cannot buy another server to restore to if this one does ever die.

can we buy them a hardware contract after the fact? (i am suspecting the answer is going to be 'within the 12 month warranty period, yes...outside of warranty, no!)

many thanks,

Answer:hp hardware support...

You kind of answered your question with the first line, only HP can give you a definitive answer. Most likely it will be no, once the warranty is already expired it's highly unlikely they will sell a support contract.

You just can't beat Microsoft hardware support. I called them because the Wireless Desktop 2000 I bought occasionally, randomly misses keystrokes. They offered to replace it with the 4000 model no questions asked. I don't even have to send the old one back to them. You'd think mean ole Microsoft was trying to out-nice Apple or something

Answer:Microsoft Hardware Support

Hm. Think I could get them to replace my original Natural Keyboard with one of the new black ones? The problem with this one? It's old! And dirty. "I need a new mouse!" (rep to the first point that gets that)

Howdy! I've recently come into possession of an older Lenovo M55e desktop. I'll get straight to the point:  Intel's GMA isn't going to cut it, and I'd like to stick something in there a little faster than a C2D E4300.  Now, I've heard that it's going to be nearly impossible to get a video card to work due to some sort of BIOS-level whitelist?  Nobody seems to agree on this, from what I've read in other posts... I can get a Radeon R7-240 for $40 right now, but I'm not wasting that money if it's just going to hang on boot.  Secondly, exactly which processors does this unit support?  Model is 9632-B57; I've read through the BIOS update notes, but "Added support for three processors" really doesn't help in any way.  A C2D E8600 would be great, if at all possible.  I've got 2G's of memory in there right now, which should be enough for the time being. Can someone please help verify what exactly this thing can support?Much appreciated.

Answer:M55e Hardware Support?

There is a BIOs whitelist to prevent higher powered cards from blowing the power supply. You have an economy corporate class machine, it really isn't up to gaming. Check the compatibility matrix HERE for officially supported cards. (3rd Tab, scroll down to your machine)

I have an older, quad-core HP Pavilion d4990y (desktop) that originally shipped with 32-bit Vista and 4 Gbytes RAM. After about a week of research I reasonably certain that I can run Win7 Pro, 64-bit with 4 x 2 Gbytes RAM (= 8 Gbytes). Given the anticipated performance increase, his seems like an upgrade worth doing to me, but I'd like more experienced and better informed people to give my plan a once-over.

1) HP shipped this model with 64-bit Vista, so 64-bit drivers are available, and I assume that if they work for Vista, they will also work for Win7.

HP Pavilion Ultimate d4990y CTO Desktop PC Drivers & Downloads | HP? Support

2) According the specs for this machine, it can take 8 Gbytes RAM:

Contact HP Support and Customer Service | HP?*Support

Maximum memory:
8 GB (4 x 2 GB) (64-bit OS)

I've also purchased a 2 Tbyte HD from NewEgg, and somewhere I read that the hard drive must be "formated" GPT, which I had never heard of before, so I went reading up on it:

At first I thought GPT was some sort of "upgrade" from NTFS because statements about it were phrased that you "format GPT", like you "format NTFS", but someone on another forum has told me that GPT is an alternative to MBR (Master Boot Record), and so I assume that you can have a NTFS-formatted hard drive that can either be formatted in... Read more

Answer:Does Older Hardware Not Support GPT?

You cannot install Windows OS on a GPT initialized drive unless your motherboard supports new UEFI Bios, and you are installing Windows 8.0 or 8.1. Which yours does not support. You can install a GPT initialized drive as a storage drive, just not as a bootable Windows drive.
A 2TB drive does not need to be Initialized GPT, it still can be MBR and Formatted NTFS. Anything larger the 2.2TB would need to be Initialized GPT.
According to your specs, you should be able to instal 8GB or RAM if you are running a Windows 64 bit OS

I have an ATi Radeon 2600XT and I am running Windows 7 Ultimate Edition 64 bit.

When I go to hardware acceleration (Display > Resolution > Advanced - not sure of the exact steps but been there several times), the "Troubleshoot" button, from where the hardware acceleration settings can be modified, is greyed out.

This is a common problem it seems, but I cannot solve this. I am running the latest CCC drivers from ATi.

To make things even more confusing, I used to run VMWare Workstation 6.5 and Windows Server 2008 R2. I could happily adjust the hardware acceleration setttings (had not updated the ATi drivers but VMWare uses its own display drivers). I then got VMWare Workstation 7.0 and I could not adjust hardware acceleration.

Any ideas how I can resolve this?

Answer:Cannot edit hardware acceleration (no support)

Install the driver by using this method:

Install AGP Drivers for HD 3850, 3650, 2400 PRO

That's an AGP card you have, right? (Could be either, so I have to ask.)

I have two hard drives, and I use winxp on one. I only connect one hard drive at a time. When I disconnect my xp hard drive and connect my win98 hard drive everything is fine. I am just wondering one thing. I have an audigy sound card on my motherboard that is not supported by win98se. So it does not work when I boot win98se. It not being supported does'nt matter to me. What does is if I am damaging it because it is not being used by the o/s and I am leaving it connected while I use the o/s. This way I will know if I am harming hardware that is connected to the mobo but not in use (not supported in o/s) while I am using an o/s.

Answer:Is It Bad To Have Hardware Connected While Running An O/S That Does Not Support It?

Nope, you're fine. You are not damaging any hardware by leaving it connected.

For my computer, I have an Acer Aspire 5733z model. And I would like to know on how to install a driver to make it compatible with my computer hardware. Like my motherboard for example. My laptop has an HM55 chipset, and 4 GB of memory. I found an interesting article about how to hack a driver to support the hardware on the computer. If I find the article, I will let you know. But for now, that's about all I have to say. But anyway, just let me know on how to hack some of my drivers. So thank you very much for your time!

Answer:I would like to know on how to hack a driver to support my hardware

Not recommended! it could cause a lot of issues with your system cause conflict with other drivers, and BOSD'S. Go to the manufacture of your computer and look for a compatible drivers for your chipset, or the manufacture of your motherboard and download and install the chipset drivers for Windows 7 64bit. I believe hacking drivers is not possible also it is ill advised your system could become useless, and unusable. Why could you want a hacked and unstable drivers for your chipset when the manufacture of your laptop has a compatible drivers for laptop as a whole chipset, video, audio plus more for Windows 7?

Chipset drivers for your laptop Download and install.

We do not condone to hacking here at TSF!

I'm looking for some advice on installing windows 7 on to my network computers.
The computers themselves are quite old but are sufficient for what I use them for. They have this motherboard -
click here 1 512 MB RAM chip (BT-DD266-512M-T321 (92 pin)), 1.6 GHZ processor running Windows XP (32 bit). The motherboard has 2 DDR1 slots and 2 DDR2 slots. I am required to install Windows 7 due to support of XP stopping.
My question is, what hardware upgrades would I need to support Windows 7? I'm thinking I can upgrade the current RAM and just about run Windows and the programs I need. Can anyone recommend and specific RAM to buy for this motherboard?
Also, while I'm here, the server for this network runs Windows server 2003. Should I be looking to upgrade to 2008? The network has about 30 client machines.

Answer:Network hardware upgrade to support Windows 7

Thanks for that.
I would prefer to stick with XP but the powers above me are telling me to go to windows 7 but aren't will willing to provide new hardware to support it. The only other option I have is using what we have at the moment.

AMD Clarifies Driver Support on DX9 Only Hardware in Win7

On Wednesday we posted about DX9 only cards receiving legacy driver support status under Windows 7. AMD?s Terry Makedon sets the record straight and clarifies what exactly this means for DX9 only video cards under Windows 7.

WDDM1.1 (Windows Display Driver Model) is the driver architecture required to run Windows7. To meet the Microsoft dictated requirements, GPU?s must be DirectX10 and later level hardware. So as stated on our website, Windows 7 users with DirectX 9 AMD graphics hardware can use the legacy Windows Vista WDDM 1.0 drivers (as it is not possible for DirectX 9 hardware to support the WDDM 1.1 driver requirements). On a separate note the move to "legacy driver" status happen when we moved our DirectX 9 based hardware to a legacy support structure back in March 2009, and we were quite public about this. We?ve been providing updates to this driver on a quarterly basis - in fact we will be posting a new legacy driver in the next few days.
Summary: Windows7 users on DirectX9 can and should use the legacy Catalyst driver which will be updated quarterly.

Answer:AMD Clarifies Driver Support on DX9 Only Hardware in Win7

I would think that any one that is into Gaming would of upgraded there video cards to some thing DX10 compatable a long time ago.

My laptop has faulty memory. The memory is permanently fixed to the motherboard so it cannot be easily replaced by me. According to the warranty check, I have an active "HP Bundled Hardware Offsite Support" but I'm not quite sure what that means. I opened a case and explained the issue, and they got back to me claiming my laptop was out of warranty, and directed me to contact the HP sales team to purchase new memory. What I find staggering here is that HP's customer support doesn't even know their own products. How can I purchase new memory when I have no way to fit it? Can somebody please explain what "HP Bundled Hardware Offsite Support" actually covers? I am getting absolutely nowhere with HP's support. I spent a fortune on this laptop and I'm so very disappointed to find it has barely lasted just over a year and HP's support has so far been entirely unhelpful.

It's been helpful and everyone here seems quite knowledgeable, so I'm finally going to just ask for help and hope someone thinks they may be able to do something to assist. I build my own systems and have probably done a hundred or more Windows installs and nearly as many (K/X/L)ubuntu setups, and this is the first time I've ever felt like what I'm trying to troubleshoot is far above my pay grade.
All six of the PC's in my home are down for the count right now. Whatever I have going on either spread via USB device prior to showing its teeth, or via the home network. I didn't touch the settings. All I did was upgrade my graphics card drivers (which makes the secondary monitor turn on), but with the hardware, 10 isn't recognizing my monitor. The only thing that will is a direct connection, and I would like to know why it refuses to detect.

The hardware isn't that old (I would say about 2-3 years old).

I received a new Y510 and have had issues from day one.  Within an hour I was on the phone with the support center resetting to factory setting.  My biggest/recent issues have been with the wirelss connectivity and support.  My husband spent an hour with Symantec remoted into our machine, Time Warner came out and replaced our modem an ran tests, updated the driver from Intel, uninstalled Symantec, reset factory settings, and other laptops work perfectly fine on our home network. I pay for a new laptop and broadband, but my IdeaPad takes 5 minutes to load a page wirelessly....the help desk tells me they can't help and have not done one step in troubleshooting. As a work from home, research analyst (in tech & telcom of all spaces), this laptop is useless at this point. Can someone please help!!!??

What kind of security settings are on your home network? I had to reconfigure some network settings to allow my laptop to connect wirelessly to the network, so it might be a safe bet that it's not your laptop but your network.

Hello Everyone, I have spent a bit of time browsing these forums looking for answers to my solutions. All of these issues have cropped up in other posts and it appears none have really been solved. I will discuss what my issues are and what my current work-arounds are. 1: Sticky Touch Screen: The touch screen occasionally (once per week-ish) will get the sensor "stuck" in the top corner. At first it appeared similar to the Microsoft/Wacom-issue that no-one is in a hurry to fix. But first I changed my touch settings to show the dot where it is being pushed. Next time the issue happened, it took two restarts, but then I just disabled the touchscreen completely in device manager. Not a great solution since I bought this because it was a convertible.2: Bad WiFi Adapter: I have updated and re-installed drivers but the Wifi adapter is just plain crappy compared to other computers in my business and household. About 2 times a day the adapter will just turn off, or disable itself. Sometimes I can disable and reenable in device manager and sometimes I have to restart.  3: Occasional glitchy screen and less occasional random shutdown: Once a month (bought this in Aug 17) the computer will exhibit even more bizarre glitchy behavior like shut down, freeze or screen glitch.  To me it seems my issues are hardware related, since theres more than 1 issue, I am guessing motherboard (what are the chances of a good motherboard and bad ethernet adapter, touchscreen ... I have an existing batch job that calls an old executable to do a search and replace within a text file. The executable is named XCHANGE.EXE, and is one of the old Clay's Utilities from

It runs fine on Windows XP Home and XP Pro, but on a new computer running Windows 7 Pro 64 on Intel i7, the batch code works but the executable causes an error message telling me it can not run on the existing hardware.
I tried it on a computer running Vista 64 on Intel Core 2 Duo T9550 and get the same error message.

I'm looking for a solution. I figure there could be at least two ways to solve the problem:

1) Learn how to use batch code to do search and replace (is it possible?).

2) Find a newer search and replace utility that will run in command-line mode under Windows 7 on 64 bit hardware.

Surely there are other solutions, but those are the only ones I can think of at the moment.

Can batch code perform search and replace on text files? If so, can it handle moderately large files (some are about 40 megabytes, but most are only about 2 megabytes or less).

I mention the file size because the existing executable utility takes several seconds to operate on the larger files (like maybe 30 seconds running on a 2.4GHz CPU). So I'm afraid that batch code would take dramatically longer to do the same job. But even so, if it would work, perhaps I would use it.
Also, the executable is capable of replacing tab characters with space characters, removing... Read more

Hi JustAnotherDude,

you could use FINDSTR and the variable exchange, but imho its not the best way. Its verry slow and causes errors if the text contains special characters (e.g. <>|&%^).

How was the usage of your XCHANGE.EXE? Which parameters and options worked for you? Maybe I could write a small VBScript for you (you could call it using batch).

I found out this really cool hack and there is a way to hack any of my drivers in my Device Manager. I would really like to try this out, but I have to make an Inf file in order to do this. But I am not sure at all on how to do this because this is complicated stuff. I also think that I have to go into my Registry editor and edit some changes there. Because I found this hack from this website. Here I will give you the link. it's here: The obsessions of an electronics freak: How To: Hack a driver to support your hardware. That is the link right there.

So I read this web page very well, but I couldn't understand on how to do this process at all! So can you please help me figure out on how to do this? Because I really want to see how cool this will work. Well anyway, check out that web page that I gave you, because it's a pretty interesting article, I must say. And also, don't forget to get back to me as soon as possible, when you can. Because I really would like to know much more about this important stuff. And I also would like to know on how to make an Inf file (Information system) file, that is. So I will be waiting for my response from you very soon as possible. So thank you very much now!

Answer:How do I hack a driver to support my hardware in my Device Manager?

First off, I would strongly suggest that you back up any files that you plan on editing. Perhaps create a system restore point as well.

I took a quick glance at the site you linked, and it looks like you just have to edit the .inf file in question. If that is the case, you can just edit it with Wordpad or Notepad.

Why don't you give the process a try and let us know how it works out. Feel free to post back with most specific questions.

I have a warranty on my Thinkpad T530 that includes next-day, on-site support. I have been trying to contact Lenovo about getting my failing hard drive replaced (also need a USB port and DELETE key replacement), but I've been unable to get through. I don't have access to a phone right now, so I have been trying to place a support request online. Lenovo's chat support said no representatives were available. I've tried twice to submit an electronic support request through the IBM website, and both requests were mysteriously canceled. Can someone please help? Any support people on this forum? Thanks!

I continue to struggle on with almost minimal hardware requirements and don't often have any issues, I don't do gaming or anything really resource intensive.

I decided that my screenshots are a bit boring and thought I may be able to change them.

Like the title bar/border in the screenshots here;

It seems that the only way I can change these colours is if I change to Windows Classic view. Not possible, as far as I can see, in Windows 7 themes.

Anyone know if there's a workaround please?

Answer:[SOLVED] Hardware doesn't support Aero so can't change colours

Hi Dave

I can not see the images you are referring too. I get a message 'Access denied"

Can you post a screenshot of way you would like the views here? also post your current view.

Are you trying to turn on Aero?

I have an asrock 775i65g mobo and originally I had a P4 3.06 GHZ LGA 775 installed but then I installed a C2D E4500 because the mobo supports C2D's. However, I starting to find that a lot of the games I play Lineage 2: The Kamael, and Half-Life 2: Lost Coast are getting much lower fpses like 21 and under when I had much better framerates with my P4 oced to 4 ghz.

Is it because the dual core isn't being used because I've already tried different methods of fixing the dual core. Another problem is that when I set affinity I get a blue screen of death saying INVALID_AFFINITY_SET.
Can anyone please help me? Thanks in advance

Answer:Satellite R630-12G: Chipset and Bios support hardware virtualisation

Notebook support the Mobile Intel HM55 Express Chipset and Intel Core i5-450M processor.

The virtualization depends on the CPU.
If the CPU support Intel VT then the virtualization should be possible.

According to the Intel page the Intel Virtualization Technology (VT-x) is possible

I have a Gateway still under warranty, so occasionally I give their online tech support a shot while it's still free. I have a Gateway 840GM, which uses a Pentium D 830. Everest and Speedfan have been reporting idle CPU temps between 58-67, with temperature on sustained 50% load reaching 73. I'd like to cool it down, but I feel like my options are limited due to the "unique" case architecture. Here's a photo of my BTX case with strange ducting:

This case only uses two big fans. One sucks air in the front and pushes it through the ducting to the CPU. The rear fan blows out exhaust. That's it. No CPU fan. Probably no space to mount one due to the ducting. I asked the Gateway tech what I could's his advice:

Brady_GWPR174 says:
Please hold while I check on this.

Brady_GWPR174 says:
Ryan, you can direct the fan of the computer to the powersupply.

Brady_GWPR174 says:
You can plug the fan of the computer directly to the powersuply so the fan would not stop while you are using the computer.

Brady_GWPR174 says:
You need to check on the black and red wire from the fan.

Brady_GWPR174 says:
There will be a converter plug which can fit in two wires. You can plug the fan wire here and it will be directed to the powersupply.

I thought the fans were already connected to the PSU...confusing.

So my two questions are,
(1) Does this sound like a solution, or nonsense?
(2) What other cooling o... Read more

Okay, I'm buying a new hard drive and I'm looking for the best deal I can find. I have a K8V special edition motherboard and a 120 GB hard drive (Maxtor, not sure if SATA or not). My motherboard can support 2 SATAs but beyond that I don't know how many hard drives I can support. What I'm looking at is a 300GB hard drive "Maxtor 300GB 7200RPG Ultra16 PATA Internal Hard Drive" with 133MB/sec transfer speed. For the same price ($149) I can get a 200GB SATA with 150MB/sec speed. Three questions:

1) What's PATA, and can my motherboard support it?
2) Which hard drive am I better off getting, assuming I can use both?

Next, I recently tried upgrading my Windows (from XP to XP <_< there was a problem with getting SP2). I made it to the point where you have to reset your computer and go from there, but when I did the Windows setup ran into a missing file and couldn't go further. I restarted and had the option of choosing whether I wanna start up in normal XP or in the XP setup, so my original Windows is intact. But now I get that choice whenever I turn my computer on, and I'd like to know how to remove the XP setup as an option for starting up. Thanks for the help guys.

Answer:Buying hardware question, also Windows question <_<

It's been a while since the release of the Y410 and they now have the Santa rosa refresh processors. I was wondering if Lenovo will provide a bios update to be able to enable "Intel VT" support. I am currently using a y410 with T7300, 4GB ram. I believe the chipset and processor supports the use of Intel VT (hardware Virtualization) option. I use my personal laptop to run Virtual PCs. One Major reason for my choice of the y410 is that I use a ThinkCentre 8811 with Intel VT option and had a chance to use a T61p (A month with a Nvidia Quadro. =) ) again with Intel VT enabled. Note: I learned my lesson. Always check the Bios aside from the OS setup. I was pondering an XPS 1330 but ended up with the Y410 as I was able to buy a 19 LCD TV with the saved money. Still wishing a bios upgrade in sight as I don't want to think of it as a bad choice. I saw the XPS 1330 and it had an "Intel VT" option. *SOB* ='/Message Edited by jojo_b2 on 05-05-2008 02:28 AM

Answer:Lenovo 3000 Y410 enable "Intel VT" support in Bios (Hardware Virtualization)

Since no one replied to my post. I just replied to my self. lol! =) Anyway. I found good news. I just flashed my Bios due to a Critical Bios Patch posting on the Lenovo Support site. My Lenovo Y410 was on of the affected systems. After patching, I went back to work on my Virtual Server. I support Sharepoint Servers 2003-2007 and have scaled down copies on my laptop. For some unknown reason, I can now enable the "Enable Hardware Assisted Virtualization" check box on the Virtual PC 2007. Eureka! In my excitement I tried looking at the bios by restarting my PC. But in amazement there was no change on the BIOS GUI. everything was the same no option was there to enable Intel VT. I then went back to windows and checked my VPC and the check box was still there and still modifieable. I don't know who to thank be this might only be a glitch on the patch. But, Thank you! I am proud to say I can now fully utilize my laptop for Play and WORK! As I use VPCs any performance gain is a real bonus for me. =) Note:I am using a Lenovo Y410 with Model 7757-35A: Intel T7300, 4GB, 160 GB, Nvidia 8400M GS. I am not sure if Intel VT will be enabled on other Y410 models. I guess only Lenovo can answer this one. But if this is the case for the Y410 with T8300 processors and Nvidia 8600M VC. This would be another good reason to buy these systems. =) **Intel VT is only available for some T2xxx, and T7xxx series processors and above (e.g. T2300, T710... Read more

I am picking up the XPS 15 this week and currently have two P2815Q monitors I am using with the Microsoft Surface Book.  Currently these are connected to the Surface Book via a single mini-display port cable with the 2rd 4K connected to the first via mini-display port.
So my question is how do I connect these monitors to the XPS 15.  I understand the XPS has Thunderbolt and a single HDMI 1.4 port.  While HDMI 1.4 is not capable of driving 4K at 60hz, I'm also wondering what the new Dell Dock is going to bring to the game here.
Would love some help, so thanks in advance.

Question: Dell Support

Not exactly within the rules I suppose but this sub forum is the most active for this subject besides the Virtualization forum of course.

Anyway all day I haven't been able to download the Dell OpenManage offline bundle for VMware ESXi 4.1. I've tried at work and at home with no luck. Anyone else having issues with Dell's support site downloading anything? Would anyone be kind enough to put it up on an FTP for me? I would greatly appreciate it. This is a free download from Dell's site.

Question: DELL Support :P

Is this the way DELL Support generally works?
I raised a complaint that my under warranty laptop has some issue. Forget about right action, even after a week I am getting lot of emails saying we will call you to diagnose your issue.

How did you contact Dell? Are you sure you actually contacted Dell? Many scams are in placed using fake web sites that will be looking to take your money. If you call or do an on-line Chat with Dell, they will help diagnose the problem at that time. If you e-mail, it's going to take more time.
