WIN7 Printing issues on server 2012 R2

Question: WIN7 Printing issues on server 2012 R2

Hi
We have a weird issue with Win7 users & connection to the print server (2012 R2)
Our print server crashed & was successfully reinstalled except with a few win7 machines that now cannot reinstall the drivers from the print server.
Another error messg : "A policy is in effect on your computer which prevents you from connecting to this print queue. Please contact your sys admin."
The weirdness comes into play where some win7 users can connect while others cant.
There is no domain or local policies that prevent the drivers being installed.
I have tried most of the stuff on the net so i am now totally out of ideas.
Anybody seen this before, please help.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a domain setup, we'll call it 123.local, server name is WINSVR1. AD promotion was setup which then setup DNS. Router is setup to hand out 1.4 as the DNS server.

DNS queries in the browser seem fast and fine but NSLOOKUP queries have issues and I also cannot locate the local server when I'm trying to join PCs to the domain.

Here's a nslookup I tested from a client, unvisited before.

I can ping 123.local and nslookup 123.local along with winsvr1.123.local FROM THE SERVER but I cannot ping or nslookup either from a client. I can ping WINSVR1 (not FQDN) but that's probably from WINS or something.

Clients should be getting the DNS from the server, especially if you want clients to connect/use the server, especially for logons, policies, etc.
Im guessing the .254.254 is a uverse/att device?
Turn off the DHCP on the .254 device *or* add your current router into the DMZ type zone
Server should be sending out DHCP info
192.168.1.4 as DNS
192.168.254.254 as gateway (or is you can do the DMZ mode use 192.168.1.1)
255.255.255.0 as subnet

Okay, I always had a simple VPN set up in RRAS on server 2003, using a policy to allow users in the 'VPN Users' group to log in and access the internet and other network resources.

I have set up the same in server 2012, and users in that group are able to connect, are given an IP address but cannot access any resources outside of that server.

I'm sure there is something I am missing; anybody know what I am doing wrong?

the above pictures shows windows 7 on installation give the option to repair, and automatically detects additional OS partitions/ boot sectors and repairs itself. however in windows 8/ server 2012 seems that function is completely gone as shown by picture below.

windows 8/server 2012 dont automatically detect OS boot sector anymore after restoring my image to a different partition and this is a headache, and worse once I get into that screen of 4 choices, I can no longer go back to windows installation unless a restart, boot from usb/disk again and it is quite annoying.

any solution to this?

More or less could use a few thoughts, I have temporarily fixed my issue, but ideas would be nice.

I am running two Server 2012 R2 systems, one is my AD/DC/DNS, and another is running WSUS and acting as a basic file-server.

I recently upgraded the SAS controller on my ESXi host (which is where the two servers are located) and lost my disks, just got done restoring most things then got to a network share that I randomly had spots with ZERO access to the share remotely, so restoring my files proved to be annoying for this share.

I then started to notice I had trust issues with my domain so I had to rejoin my networked machines to the domain, this included having the fileserver rejoin the domain before it's domain logon expired. All was perfectly fine till today when I started running into permissions issues.

For example; \\servername\Media1, I could access it locally on the server, and read/write just fine, but remotely, while I could access the share, I couldn't access something like \\servername\Media1\directory1\ask\, but COULD access \\servername\Media1\directory1\huh\

To further complicate things, yesterday while I was working in this shared folder, I had zero issues accessing \\servername\Media1\directory1\ask, but do now.

To further things, the security permissions are inherited by the parent directory, I checked, and double checked, both security, and sharing permissions was all set properly at the root directory, and all lower directories.

Now, on... Read more

That is weird though. Maybe try enforcing a deny permission first and confirming that works (i.e. blocks access correctly), then change to a permit.

Hey everyone,

I'm having an issue with setting up Remote Computer Management in Server 2012.

My setup is as follows:
2 identical physical hosts (1 Hyper-V Server 2012 and 1 ESXi 5.1)
1 Active Directory Domain Controller installed as a VM in the ESXi host

I have my Hyper-V host already joined to the local test domain on the DC VM, but am having issues accessing disk management for the Hyper-V host in Remote Computer Management. When I try to load the page and view the drives in the DC VM it says "Error RPC unavailable".

Has anyone successfully setup Remote Computer Management in a Server 2012 install to manage a physical Hyper-V Server 2012 host?
If anyone has any suggestions please let me know. I have tried these two methods but neither has worked:
http://www.petri.co.il/remotely-managing-windows-2008-server-core-firewall.htm#
http://publicjotting.blogspot.ca/2012/06/hyper-v-server-2012-and-remote-hyper-v.html

Answer:Issues setting up Remote Computer Management for Server 2012

On the machine or VM you want to RM, type in start "Allow" into Start, and click Allow a program through Windows Firewall. Scroll down till you see Windows Remote Management, then make sure Domain is checked. When you connect via RM you need to be connecting from a PC joined to that domain.

Network printing problem:

I have a home wireless network consisting of 3 computers.... an XP Desktop, VISTA Laptop and Windows 7 Laptop. The network works properly and I can view/update/change all files on any computer from any computer. Two printers are connected to the Desktop PC which I can see from both Laptops. However, I can only print from the VISTA Laptop.

From the Win7 Laptop I see the printers on the Desktop, but can not print. I tried adding a network printer through ?Devices & Printers?. Again, it shows me the printers on the Desktop, but when I ?click? on either printer?. the system tells me it can?t locate the drivers.

Up until yesterday? when I had to use the restore function, return to the original manufacture?s settings, re-install software and restore my backed up files? I?ve been printing from the Win7 Laptop for several months. The restore went fairly smoothly, and everything else appears normal?.. all files on any of the three systems are accessible from any computer.

Hey guys,

I have a Win7 machine, 64bit running Ultimate. I am trying to get it to print to a Canon iR C3220. I have the 64bit Canon iR C3220-C2 PCL5c driver installed which works fine on 4 other machine of the same specs.

On one machine though when printing anything, the document is sent to the printer but the user has to manually clear the message to "load more paper", and there is already full trays in there, so the document is printed. If there is more than one document to print the user has to stand by the machine and press the "load more paper" to print the next document.

Anyone know how to overcome this?

I've tried a couple of different drivers but the do not work at all.

Thanks,

Sean

Server OS Windows Server 2012 Essentials
Client OS: Windows 7 Professional

I recently upgraded from Home Server 2011 to Essentials 2012. This required me to create a Domain which I did, and the other PC's connect with no problem. Using the same procedure to connect my main machine, and it does not see any other computers that are in the domain when I go to network places, not even the server. I have checked that the primary DNS is pointing to 2012 Essentials server. I can connect to the other PCs by manually typing in the other PC names.

Another problem is that I cannot access the shared folders in the Dashboard. I log in as an administrator and have checked permissions. When I try to access these shared folders it gives me the access denied message.

Does anyone know what is going on with these two problems?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Answer:One client not seeing other computers in the Domain. Client OS Win7, Server OS 2012

I didn't use 2012 Essentials yet - only regular 2012 and domain is working without any problem.
Main thing is that client pc must have dns connected to server - on server you can set forwarding for external internet access.
If you have problems with domain you could try rejoin to domain on client PC - you'll verify then that everything is configured properly - I can recommend tool called Profile Wizard http://www.forensit.com/Profwiz/ It's great for rejoining to domain or when you want to switch to other domain without lose your profile.
Maybe Dasboard require for local administrator privileges to work properly ?

I have followed the simple guide on how to connect my printer to my PC via my BT Home Hub from here: Use your BT Home Hub - Use it as a print server - Windows Vista guide | Wallace IT, unfortunately regardless of what printer I try it with I am faced with 'Printer Busy or Error' even when it's not busy; the printer does not acknowledge that it has been asked to print. I have tried this on XP, Vista and 7 with the same response.

The only thing I can see that could possibly affect it would be my Airport Express router that is plugged into the Home Hub via Ethernet using DHCP (and its IP address from the Home Hub is fixed at 192.168.0.6).
The Airport Express's IP address is 192.168.1.1 and issues IP addresses using DHCP from 192.168.0.2 to 192.168.1.200.

The BT Home Hub however, for standard ethernet connections and WiFI connections, uses 192.168.0.1 as its IP Address and then issues them from 192.168.0.2 to 192.168.0.254 to other devices.

The printer IP port mentioned in the guide and the one I have found that corresponds to the my printer plugged into the USB socket on the back of the router is 192.168.1.253. Not a standard IP address for that router.

Any suggestions on what i should do?

Hi
I am working with windows 8 and I have installed SQL server 2007 and visual studio 2010. Now I want to upgrade these setups to SQL server 2012 and visual studio 2012. what is the advantages of what i want to do and how can i do it easily without corrupting the operating system? Please help.

Answer:Installation of sql server 2012 and visual studio 2012

SQL Server has an upgrade option that is pretty painless. Just run the setup file from your 2012 installation media and click the upgrade option. It will ask you what instance to upgrade, run some checks, and then upgrade it for you.

Visual Studio is a little different. If you install 2012 without uninstalling 2010 first, you will simply just have both versions to choose from. You can completely uninstall 2010 before installing 2012 by finding your 2010 installation file and adding the uninstall and force switches when running it(ex. "C:\vs_ultimate.exe /uninstall /force").

If you keep 2010, 2012 will ask you if you wish to import your settings and whatnot from 2010. If you uninstall 2010, 2012 will just have it all when you open it for the first time.

My school gives us server 2012 standard for free. I am wondering if it's possible to install it as 2012 essentials with the same features as essentials kind of like how win pro had every thing home had. Or are the features of server essentials not included in standard? (Features like full pc back up and the dashboard like whs 2011)

Answer:can you setup server 2012 standard as 2012 essentials?

Different media for the install, Server Standard and Datacenter use the same media. Essentials has it's own install disk and Foundation and Storage Server share the same media.

I'm redoing my whole network here and liberating one machine which I'll sell on c'list or ebay. The system I've been using as daily driver is an older P4 3.4ghz machine that gives excellent service but for my personal use I've moved to a netbook/notebook.
I want the old desktop, which has Ultimate x64 and as much disk as need be, to serve the whole network as file store/retrieve. I have a few questions:
- Power-saving. Will the system awake from sleep via a request from the LAN? is there anything I need to do to enable this or should it "just work"?
- Security: the way I imagine this will work is simply that that machine owns its own homegroup, and the others must join it by inputting the correct password. Otherwise, the network is a couple of dd-wrt routers bridged to form one common AP, with some clients cabled and others not. access to the routers is protected. What other security measures should I take?
- I should have first mentioned that the clients here are the usual mix: some xp home, [one actually], xpp, win7 home premium, and once in awhile a visiting Vista. a few cellphones/handsets thrown in for good measure
- I'm fuzzy as to how printing might work. I know how ignorant this sounds, but if I pop open a file that physically resides on the 'server's volume, edit it, and print, is the spooler handling the job the remote one and if so must all clients then have the particular printer driver loaded? is there a way to force the server to handle the pri... Wake On LAN support usually must be enabled via BIOS

Since you state further down that your network is a mix of XP, Vista, and 7... homegroups are out!

Hello, all!

I am preparing to get a Windows Server set up in the near future here at a mission school I just started working at.

Here's what I am planning on running:
Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V, under which I will run 3x virtual machines (Server 2012 Standard, pfSense, and Untangle).

Since I am needing to get this implemented as soon as possible, I am trying to decide what to do, considering Windows Server 2012 R2's release is just around the corner.

I'm wondering... Is 2012 R2 going to be a completely different OS, in that you need to purchase a separate license key to run it if you already have 2012? Or will it be more like a service pack?

Also, can the preview version be upgraded to release once it is released?

The reason I am asking is that I am needing to get this set up as soon as possible, and need to know how to proceed. Should I use Hyper-V preview and Standard preview (if there is one... Only seen datacenter so far) then upgrade to release and purchase licenses, or is there something else that would be preferable?

Thanks!

Answer:Windows Server 2012 to 2012 R2 Questions

2008 R2 and 2012 R2 are new operating systems that require you to purchase them. I believe 2012R2 has gone RTM recently, which means in a few months you should be able to get it.

There are a lot of VM improvements in 2012, and even more in 2012R2. If you're just running a basic setup it's not needed to hold out for, unless you're not under any time constraints, then why not. Here is a list of the major R2 features.

I'm not sure how well pfSense and Untange will run in a Hyper-V VM. The Gen 2 VM and improved Linux support of R2 may be needed for better operation.

Hey there,

As often said...long time lurker. Recently installed a copy of WS2012 Datacenter I received to play with and learn more about. I have pretty much zero Windows Server background knowledge (I don't count WHS...which I have running as well).

So, my question...I created a Storage Pool, and then a couple Volumes, and then Shares.

My embarrassing noob question...how do I access these Shares?

I can locate the server on my network, and know the IP address of it.

I created a User account so that I don't need to use the Admin account for general use.

My goal:
Access the Share I created from my MacBook Air so that I can read/write files from it.

Thanks in advance for tolerating my WS "noobness."

Answer:Accessing Windows Server 2012 Server Pool Shares

Not sure how to access it from a mac, but on a windows box you can just run \\%servername%\%sharename% and it'll launch it in an explorer window. Should be some sort of network browser on the mac to allow you to type in the unc.

We run a web proxy server on our network for internet access.
On client machines (running Windows 2012 R2) I have configured the proxy server setting in Internet Explorer "Tools\Internet Settings\Connections\LAN Settings" to point at the designated web proxy server.
When attempting to browse websites from IE I receive the "The proxy server isn't responding" error.
Conversely, browsing the same sites via Google Chrome and Firefox (installed on the same client server) return web pages without error.
In addition, if I run Internet Explorer as administrator (Right Click\Run as Administrator), I am able to browse web sites without receiving the error.
It would appear that the issue is isolated to browsing via IE when not run in elevated mode.
Has anyone come across this issue?

Answer:Server 2012 R2 - Internet Explorer Proxy Server Issue

Hi Dicki,
First, please try to reset the Internet Explorer. Some plug-ins may affect the proxy.
If it doesn't work, please try to perform a network capture on the client.
Please check if the client send the http traffic to the proxy server at the correct port.
If the client has sent the http traffic to the proxy server, please check if there is any warning or error in the proxy server.

.. hoping I can get some help on this. Driving me nuts!

Since upgrading to Windows Server 2016, WOL doesn't work for me. I've ruled out network or router issues, since it works perfectly fine on my Windows 7 machine.

I have 3 NICs in a team, but that's irrelevant, since the WOL doesn't work even if I disabled the teaming. One thing I did notice is that when I shutdown my Windows 7 machine, the NICs remain lit. However, the NICs on my Windows Server 2016 completely turn off. I don't recall if that was the case when I was using 2012 on the same hardware, but it seems strange to me. If the NICs are completely off, I can't imagine there is a way for them to receive magic packets.

I checked the UEFI and all the necessary options are enabled for WOL. I also tried upgrading the NIC drivers on the server but that didn't help. I read that Windows 10 has a "fast startup" option that messes with WOL, so I disabled it in the Group Policy settings on the server, but that didn't work either.

If anyone has any ideas, I'd be grateful for the help.

Greetings,

We have a DL380 G4 with two dual-core Xeon processors clocked somewhere between 2.8 - 3.2 GHz, and 4GB DDR2-ECC RAM (two sticks). This is a relatively new installation and deployment of Windows 2008 R2 x64 with the latest updates and service packs. The Print Services/Manager role is installed.

When printing through the Windows server to a Lexmark X340 in the office, it takes an unacceptably long time to print the jobs. When printing directly to the Lexmark X340 (instead of a shared local queue that exists on the Windows server), print jobs happen fast and normal. The employees have been timing how long it takes to print through the Windows server:

2012/1/18 Wednesday, 11 invoices = 10 minutes
2012/1/19 Thursday, 17 invoices = 21 minutes
2012/1/20 Friday, 24 invoices = 3 minutes (when printing directly to the Lexmark instead of going to the Windows server)
2012/1/23 Monday, 19 invoices = 25 minutes

This symptom is applying to everything the employees print -- not just the invoices or print jobs generated by the business program that we use called Britannia.

In addition to printing through the Windows server, they have to press the green button on the printer to actually have it print the current job. If they print directly to the printer, it prints automatically without requiring the green button to be pressed. I have tried setting the print processor to RAW [FF Auto] but it did not resolve the problem, so I set it back to RAW. Both x64 and x86 drivers are inst... Read more

Sharing tab -> Render print jobs on the clients = checked
Advanced tab -> spool print documents so program finishes printing faster = start printing immediately

however try changing that to "print directly to the printer"

Currently my printer processors are set to RAW.

So Im finally putting my big boy pants on and setting up a real home server. There are going to be 3 main uses for this server

1) Home server - Mainly for streaming to all my raspberry pi's and other windows devices but also as a network drive for my ssd only pcs

2) Remote server - Grabbing files away from home, remote vnc etc

3) Web server - Been working on a small personal website for a while now that I want to be able to host myself once it goes live. This isn't my main use for the server and if it isnt going to jive well with my primary uses I can always build a seperate pc for that use.

So if cost wasnt a concern between home server 2011 and server 2012 which would you choose based on my planned usage? I plan on using drive pool or drive bender with whatever I choose. So I would also appreciate some recommendations on which application you would choose with your choice of operating systems. Also, I can't seem to find definitive differences between the server 2012
releases (standard, foundation, essentials) It seems to be more of a licensing thing, so furthermore, which version of server 2012 would you go with?

Sorry guys, Im a total noob at this

Answer:Home server 2011 or Server 2012?

Personally, I'm going with WHS2011. I'd rather start with an OS that has most of it's bugs worked out, over an unknown. Since you can get a license for ~$50, why not start there to get your feet wet, then upgrade to Server 2012 once the kinks have been worked out?

Hello, I own my own IT consultation and management company and I have a few clients whom I will be upgrading their Servers to Server 2012. I thought it a good idea to have a place on this website to talk about and gives tips about Windows Server 2012. Please Fill out the poll so the Moderators can see what kind of interest the community has in this suggestion. Thanks!

Answer:When are we going to start a Server 2012 (Server 8) Forum?

Not a lot of interest unfortunately. Let me think about it and I will see what we can do.

My boss wants to be able to print a copy of the email she sent out with ALL the addresses she sent it to including the Bcc's. Does anyone know how to get the Bcc addresses to print?

Thanks,
Sara

Answer:Outlook 2012 Printing who was bcc'd

Easy way is forward the message and copy the Bcc addresses and paste that into the body of the message and print the forwarded message. Complicated method is to design a custom form. See this link from msoutlook.info to do it.

Hello,
I created the following performance counter using logman.exe.

logman.exe create counter US_Triton_Perf_Log -b 9/23/2015 09:30:00 -e 9/30/2099 18:30:00 -r -s $server -si $frequence -cf $folder\$server.txt -f $logtype  -o C:\local\logs\Perfout_$Server --a -v mmddhhmm  -rf  $max_duration

When I do this across multiple servers specifically for Windows Servers 2008/2012, the counter is created to repeat and run everyday at 930PM and stops running everyday at 430PM. This works perfectly fine as intended. However, When I do this for a Windows
2003 server, my created counter is very different.
For example, in this case, I have set to the counters to start at 930AM and end at 1830PM, because I have set a maximum duration of 9 hours, the job terminates and begins on the next day, since I have the repeat option on. However, this does not apply to
our 2003 server; logman creates the job to run once a week in this case it would be on a Wednesday. In addiiton, I noticed that the job doesn't not even start at it's indented time. It actually does not start at all. I also notice that the jobs on all windows
2003 servers are created in a pending status, which then prevents me from removing the counter remotely.

I would like to know if windows 2003 is capable of working like my win 2008/2012 servers using logman, and if historically, the job has to be kicked off through scheduled task.

Both Jobs are using the same criteria, but a... Read more

Hi,

Today I was on a site I'd never been on before. Avg (free) popped up detecting consrv.dll as a virus, before i could quarantine the file a second instance of consrv.dll was detected. I attempted to quarantine both. I was successful on one but the other it said couldn't be found. Next thing I know I've been infected by Win7 security 2012.
I ended up doing a system restore. Should I have done this? Have I just complicated things for myself?
Ok so now I'm here looking for help. My computer appears to be running fine, no Win7, etc... however I know that doesn't mean that everything is fine.

I'm on Windows 7 64bit.

Welcome to the Malware Removal Forum.

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Pleases follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide
and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

**** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.
After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
Helpful Notes:
If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:

Starting your computer in Safe mode

If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using... Read more

Ok, so my computer got hacked by the Win7 Home Security virus. I was stupid and fell for it and paid the money to download it which apparently is what installed it. I noticed that the virus put a little symbol in the lower right corner of my computer. So I shut off my computer and haven't touched it until today. The little symbol in the lower right corner is gone and I can't find a trace of it anywhere. My computer is working like normal, my CPU is right where is should be. I've even ran 3 full system scans and they all came up clean. I don't know if I need to take my computer in to be fixed and stop using it until then or if the virus is gone...I need some advice from some very knowledgebale computer people!!!

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, or what logs I'm suppose to post, so I'm just going to explain my problem.
I became infected by Win7 Security a few days ago and removed it by following the instructions on this site. I thought I had it all gone but started noticing that whenever I search on search engines and click a link I am redirected to ads. I'm also getting pop-ups from time to time and have what I believe to be a fake adobe flash player downloader that keeps trying to automatically download something about every 20 minutes or so. About a day after I removed Win7 it came back. I removed it again by following the exact same steps as before, but this time I also scanned with Superantispyware and Ad-aware as opposed to just using Malwarebytes as before. TDSS Killer found nothing. Malwarebytes and the other scanners keep saying they're removing trojans but seemingly to no avail. I'm still being redirected and getting pop-ups and the flash player thing is still trying to download and I have no clue what to do. Thanks in advance for any help.

My Dad's computer picked up this nasty bit of rogue antivirus malware. I tried to follow along w/ the removal instructions (seen here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-win-7-antispyware-2012) in that i ran rkill and then MBAM, but it seems to have re-installed itself on restart.

I appreciate any help! Thanks!

Using Windows 7

I have the Win7 Antivirus 2012. I found another topic about this problem so I downloaded files to fix the problem. However I can't run anything. Can't open task manager, Regedit, Internet browser, etc. I also cannot run anything from the Start menu or command line. I can look at files when I boot in Safe mode command prompt. It looks like nothing is on drive C: when I'm at the command prompt but I see it with Windows explorer (explorer works kindof). With command prompt it looks like stuff is on a different drive letter. Maybe that's normal, I don't know. When I try to open anything I get the Open With... prompt and I can hit browse to look around. Can't do anything else however.

This computer has three users. User1 got the virus approx two weeks ago but User2 did not. While logged on to User2 I ran a virus scan and a bot scans. Trend Micro Housecall found three Trojans and deleted them. RUBotted says there is one bot that can't be deleted. Today User2 became infected. I do not know if User3 is infected because I haven't logged into it. User1 is the administrator.

Curious... A week ago I ran Hijackthis while logged on to User2 and just now I was able to open the log file. If that is helpful in diagnosing the problem I might be able to upload the text. I would have to save the file to a USB drive and transfer it to the computer I'm using now. If I would risk infecting my computer I'd rather pass on ... Read more

I have had much success using all the tools and advice from MG forums in the past, but I have currently run into an issue where I cannot download nor run ANY program. Any time I even open my browser I get this pop up for win7. The worst part was, an adobe update window popped up while I was checking my military email, that was when it all started. I cannot open regedit, go to any web page, run anything from a flash drive....I am still getting used to windows 7 and unsure how to boot into safe mode even to try running any programs that way. This window just keeps popping up telling me that everything I try to run or do is causing some time of trojan/virus etc to infect my computer. It has also seemed to have disabled my Avira. I am thoroughly confused.

Starting your computer in Safe mode

Also try this:

Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please download and run the below tool named Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) which may help allow other programs to run.
There are 4 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.

Vista and Win7 users need to right click and choose Run as Administrator

You only need to get one of them to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.

Rkill.exe
Rkill.com
Rkill.scr
Rkill.pif
Once you've gotten one of them to run then try to immediately run the following.

Now download and Run exeHelper

Please download exeHelper to your desktop.
Double-click on exeHelper.com to run the fix.
A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.
A log file named log.txt will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com
Attach the log.txt file to your next message.
Note: If the window shows a message that says "Error deleting file", please re-run the program before posting a log - and post the two logs together (they will both be in the one file).

I want you to run TDSSKiller so refer to the below for how to do so.

TDSSkiller - How to run

Has any of that helped you to run the programs in the R&R?

I got a Win7 Anti Virus 2012 on my computer and it says to install the anti virus software now. It is confirmed that this IS the virus....I did not purchase this but I did do their scan even though I also ran my Avast anti virus scan and it said there was no compromised files. However, I cant get on Internet Explorer when I try to open it the Win7 opens us and says there are 29 threats have been found and that I need to purchase this program. I dont know if I actually have the virus or not....I am guessing I do since I cant open the internet....My question is what antispyware program should I use to uninstall this....there is nothing listed for Win 7 2012....Thanks PselkeyEdit: Moved topic from Win 7 to the more appropriate forum. ~ Animal

Question: Server 2012

Hi everyone,

I have a big challenge. Our establishment is expanding next month from one location to two locations and on both locations we are going to use Server 2012. The intention is that a number of folders should be available in both locations. Users must login with the same credetials on both locations. Since I'm fairly new to networking, I do not know how to get started. I already searched on google but found nothing useful.

Does someone can tell me where to find usefull and easy explained information?

Thanks

Youtube. When I took my "Managing and Maintaining a Windows Server" course, nearly all the lecture material was on Youtube. I'll try and see if I can dig up the videos today. It sounds like you're going to want a simple domain with two domain controllers, and maybe some caching if the link between the two sites is slow.

Question: Server 2012 R2

Hello everyone,

I'm in the process of updating our environment to Server 2012 R2 and I've also added (2) Hyper-V clusters (2-nodes each) and all is going amazingly well honestly.

My one issue however, is that I've re-built our file server but I can't seem to figure out how to re-build the structure that I had for the user home drives.

A brief run-down, I have FILE\HOME\%username% - the file share that is setup for this has Domain User permissions on the file structure (I think, I'm assuming that's the Permissions tab in 2012) and for the Share permissions I have it set to Everyone (full).

I'm not sure what I'm missing although I know it's a permissions thing - I want to set it up so that each user has permissions to their folder only - right now, they are getting permissions to all folders - although they don't know this as they're only seeing their own folders but they could easily navigate to the other users if they knew how.

Can someone run down what permissions needs to be setup for Server 2012 (most of what I can find are for Server 08).

Answer:Server 2012 R2

There may be a few missing details because each environment is different.
Create a folder that will hold the user home drives
Edit the NTFS permissions for that folder (security tab) and go into advanced, disable inherit and convert to explicit.
Remove Users group permissions

Add principal Domain User (or another group all your users are in) and set this folder only then add permissions read, list, read permissions, read extended attributes
Go back to advanced sharing and share the folder and give Full Control to Everyone group
Add DFS Namespaces and Replication (optional) under file and storage services role
Create a domain DFS root named whatever you want then add the share into that root
Select all users in ADDS and edit home profile, then point <drive letter> to \\domain\dfs\share\%username%
When you do this it will automatically assign user permissions when you type in the home drive and hit OK. I add read to the top level folder just so users don't get errors if they try to back out of their folder. They can't read anything just see the folders (you can even set it to they cannot see the folders but it's more complicated).

This system also works good because you can change file servers in the future without having to edit users again. You just add a new share with the same name to DFS and replicate everything over, then remove the old share.

Fooling around with a free win2012 r2 server and must have messed something up since I can't see it on the network anymore. I just can access the network shares through typing in its ip address but typing in its name it doesn't come up anymore.

I have it setup as just a simple workgroup and was fooling around with vpn since I wanted to learn that, I installed it and uninstalled it and now I can't see it on any of my computers attached to the network.

I also cannot remote login into it anymore with either the name or the ip address.

Any ideas?

Boy I feel dumb.

Hello All,

I was infected with the fake removal tool Win7 Spyware 2012, and removed it with Spybot Search and destroy. After doing this, I noticed my harddrive was constantly being accessed, and my activity light on my motherboard's network controller was blinking like mad, even though as a test I went into taskmanager and shut down all programs. Also, my screen would black out momentarily, and then come back on with no apparent changes. I have Firefox set to not allow pop ups, and to warn on re-directs, but every so often, not every time I clicked a link, I would get re-directed in a new tab to some BS site for some product or another. I opened taskmanager, and 3 processes were listed as having no Username nor description. right clicking and selecting open location would not work. The three processes were; ATICLIEXX.EXE, CSRSS.EXE, and WINLOGON.EXE. I disabled the ATI executable, and when I ran in safe mode with networking, and opened task manager, CSRSS.EXE was listed with SYSTEM as the user, and I could open it's location folder. WINLOGON.EXE did not appear. Reboot in normal mode, and they were listed with no user and access was denied again. I ran McAfee, Super anti-spyware, and MalwareBytes, and only Malwarebytes found a problem, removing 2 trojans and 10 tracking cookies. Problem still persisted. I then ran Webroot, and it found and removed 2 trojans, but the problems still persisted. I then found and ran Hitman pro 3.5, and after it found and removed some hink... Read more

Hi, I seem to be hit pretty hard with the win7 2012 virus. After it first appeared, I followed the steps of the following guide:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-win-7-antispyware-2012

However, I've had to repeat this procedure for the last three days, with the same exact results. Every day at around 4:30, a pop-up for an Adobe Flash Player update appears, which I cannot close out of (it will just reappear again). Afterwards, win7 starts running and disables my other anti-virus programs. Malware Bytes will clean my machine after I run the scan in safe-mode, but I have to repeat the process every day, so something must still be there.

Here is my DDS log, (64-bit system)

Hello,

I am new to this forum as of today so apologies if I am posting at the wrong place or if my concern is totally obvious.

I am attempting to follow Automated Removal Instructions for Win 7 Antispyware 2012, which has worked for me before. I can't get past step three which is to run FixNCR.reg. The error message reads "Cannot import (then it lists the location of th FixNCR.reg file). Not all data was successfully written to the registry..."

Yes, I installed the program through a clean computer, and yes then I attemped "Run as administrator" as outlined in the bleepingcomputer instructions.

I believe not getting through this step is keeping me from continuing with the removal process.

Any help?

-Freducator

Answer:Win7 Antispyware 2012 solution not working

Hello, First I moved thia from WIN7 to Am I Infected.Did you attempt this?If you do not have any removable media or another clean computer that you can download the FixNCR.reg file onto, you can try and download it to your infected computer using another method. On the infected computer, right click on the Internet Explorer's icon, or any other browser's icon, and select Run As or Run as Administrator. If you are using Windows XP, you will be prompted to select a user and enter its password. It is suggested that you attempt to login as the Administrator user. For Windows 7 or Windows Vista, you will be prompted to enter your Administrator account password.Once you enter the password, your browser will start and you can download the above FixNCR.reg file. When saving it, make sure you save it to a folder that can be accessed by your normal account. Remember, that you will be launching the browser as another user, so if you save it to a My Documents folder, it will not be your normal My Documents folder that it is downloaded into. Instead it will be the My Documents folder that belongs to the user you ran the browser as. Once the download has finished, close your browser and find the FixNCR.reg file that you downloaded. Now double-click on it and allow the data to be merged. You should now be able to run your normal executable programs and can proceed to the next step.

I was infected with the Win7 Security 2012 and System Check simultaneously. I used your guides to try and combat both infections and both seemed to have gone.. Shortly after I was getting audio ads playing when no windows were open... I actually DELETED Internet Explorer from my system (I use Firefox anyways) This stopped that problem.. Everything was fine until I updated my virus definitions with AVG 2012... Now I have had to disable it entirely because every ten seconds it pops up a found virus. Computer is very sluggish now and quite glitchy...Please Help!!!

AVG has been working smoothly until the last few days when I started getting the following message.

"Windows Defender. This program is turned off. If you are using another program that checks for harmful or unwanted software use the Action Center to check that program's status. If you would like to use this program click here to turn it on."

I've tried so many things I'm running out of patience. There seems to be nothing in Action Center that is relevant and I can't uninstall Defender as there's no option so I went to Services and disabled it. Still I get the message. I've tried a Command Prompt that should have disabled it, but no luck. I went to the AVG forum which is definitely not user friendly. I rang the free phone number only to find that a) I couldn't hear the operator and she couldn't hear me and b) it's only the phone call that's free - the service isn't.

If I close the error message box it returns. I'm at a loss to know what to do next. I now know why I uninstalled AVG last time because of constant error messages so if this can't be solved I shall uninstall AVG again and return to Avast which doesn't seem so prone to problems.

I have Win7, Malware Bytes and run AVG free 2012 on my Dell Inspiron laptop. Can anyone help please?

I've heard it's possible to do some tweaking to essentially turn Server 2012 into Windows 8. I've searched but didn't find anything. Anyone know how to do this or where to look for the info?

Answer:server 2012 to windows 8

Probably very similar to the instructions for Server 2008 to a Workstation.

Doable, but why? You don't gain a whole lot, if anything.

I just installed Server 2012 Standard on my machine and of course forgot that MSE doesn't work on Server.

Anybody know of a good, hopefully free, AV that works on Server 2012?

Answer:AV for Windows Server 2012?

Most of the free av doesn't run on server. As far as paid av for the most part you generally need to use the business version of the software which also generally starts in 5 packs.

To my knowledge ms fixed it so you can't run mse on 2012 as it would install on 08.

Hi there,

Long time lurker. Recently acquired a copy of Server 2012 but I'm unsure what exactly I should be doing with it. NOW I REALIZE THAT SOUNDS CRAZY FROM SOMEONE WHO LURKS ON [H]...but I've never had a need for a server OS in the past.

My home currently consists of a WHS2011 machine, a desktop running W7Pro, wife's laptop on W7HP, and my MacBook Air, as well as a few iOS devices around the house. The WHS stores all my media (approx 11TB worth) as well as handle computer backups of the Windows machines.

I've been debating, and looking, at Synology NAS systems for easy media streaming (i.e. Plex) as well as having an FTP option and iTunes server. Not sure if this is a machine that will really provide me any significant improvement so I've yet to pull the trigger on a NAS.

So, anyone willing to provide some suggestions on what might be my best use for my copy of Server2012? I have an old box lying around with a Q6600(?) and 8GB RAM doing nothing right and I'm hoping that would be a sufficient box to run Server2012 should I find a use for it.

Thoughts, comments, suggestions, etc would be appreciated!

Answer:What to do with my copy of Server 2012?

You can make sweet love to it.

In all honesty Server 2012 is an overpowered over complicated piece of software for home usage. Unless you want MS cert.

Hey!
I have a Precision 490 Workstation Server with a Intel Xeon 5120, 4GB of EEC RAM (DDR2,) a 750w PSU, and ATI FireGL V7200 video card. Should I upgrade from Windows 7 Ultimate 64x to Server 2012? Or to Windows 8...

Or don't upgrade at all? I need to host one remote connection, that's it. So maybe I should stick to 7?

Thanks

Setting up my first 2012R2 RDS server, is there a way to configure one desktop so that its the same for all users. On 2008R2, what ever shortcuts or modifications you made to the admin desktop were seen by all RDS users when they logged in, doesn't seem to be that way for 2012R2.

Answer:Server 2012 R2 RDS question

On 2008R2, what ever shortcuts or modifications you made to the admin desktop were seen by all RDS users when they logged in, doesn't seem to be that way for 2012R2.Click to expand...

That's actually not the case. This aspect hasn't changed between 2008 R2 and 2012 R2.

You want to talk this two different ways:
1. If you want icons to appear on the desktop, you can place them on the all users desktop.
2. You'll want to create a default profile so when new users log into the machine, they receive the profile that you created for them.

We are trying to install an application and for some reason when we double click the exe nothing happens at all on the screen.

We go to the even viewer and an event_id = 1000 is captured.

At first we tried to install an app made by CA, so we thought it was due to the version not being compatible, as the exe opens in 2008.

Today we attempted to install a different program all together and same exact thing is happening.

The CA tool is packaged using InstallAnywhere
This next exe is packaged using InstallJammer

Is there anything within the Server 2012 OS that could prevent these from launching? Or a workaround?

I've tried to run as Amin, run in compatibility mode, and not success.

This is what i'm getting for both in the event viewer:
Exception Code: 0xc0000005
EventID: 1000
Application Error

At this point now idea what to do

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks in advance

Hi, I?m having a hellish time with Win7 clients and Server 2012 RDS (and PCI!!)

I have disabled TLS 1.0 on the server;
DisabledByDefault=0x00000001
Enabled=0x00000000

Win10/8.1 connect (I?m guessing these don't even try TLS 1.0)

Win7 RDP is latest (v8), I have tried KB3140245 but really unsure what a ?DWORD Bitmap? is ?!? i first thought 32-bit DWORD but it doesn?t seem to want to take the value given, either 0x00000A00 or 0x00000200 ? so that I think is my first hurdle?

Do I need to run KB3140245/Reg keys on both Win7 and Server 2012? (that was a little unclear)

I don?t want to make too many changes to the Server 2012, as I need to revert back etc. so the client can work etc. (busy company with little offline time)

Hey All - I wrote 3 weeks ago about my Win 8 experience, so I thought I'd share my experience moving my two 2008 R2 test lab boxes to 2012 and my thoughts about this new OS.

First of all I always value the quality in the Server product line. Like any OS keep it simple stupid is the key to success. Don’t get me wrong, each has deficiencies, but you can usually bet the next OS will fill in the gaps.

My 2008 R2 lab was a 2 Standard hosts both with AD and DNS. I decided to take a different route than I could have – instead of transferring the roles, reinstalling one with 2012, transferring the roles back, and then installing the second 2012, I decided to bring up a fresh 2012 VM (in ESX), give it the roles, and then install both 2012’s at the same time.

The Modern UI works as well as it does on 8 – it’s better initially because they don’t clutter the screen with apps. Like I said in my Win 8 experience thread, the simpler the initial Modern UI screen is the more manageable the interface is. Try to use “All Apps” on 8/2012 – it can be a cluster fuck.

True Failover DHCP servers is a nice perk. How many times have you seen 2 servers with split scopes and half of the scopes excluded? Yep, no more of that craziness. I tested this in a lab scenario as well. I had a Win 8 client with an IP assigned from Server1, so I took 1 offline, refreshed the client IP and Server2 showed the IP assignment instead. How many times will DHCP go offline and then a client happen to go ... Read more

Question: Server 2012 Bsod

Our Windows Server 2012 is crashing, and our hosting company is telling us it's software and the OS needs to be reloaded. Which I think is bogus, I suspect it either may be a hard drive or a RAID controller. Any insights anyone has would be appreciated. Dump is attached. Thanks.

Answer:Server 2012 Bsod

It's probably a driver/filter but continue your quest as suggested elsewhere, they're much more experienced with Server issues.

Hi, some time ago I deployed two servers for a small RDS environment.  They are both physical servers, session-based RDS.
I want to now get USB Redirection to work on them to enable the use of WebCams.  Looking through all the literature and articles, I get the impression that I need Hyper-V installed.  Is this true?  Was my initial deployment setup incorrect
or can I just add the Hyper-V feature now?   I am worried if I install that role that it will change the architecture of my setup.
Can someone please advise.
Many thanks

Hello Guys,

So basicly I have a Windows Server 2012 Hypervisor and it recently gets a lot of BSODs. I have run some programs and made a few searches to see if I could find a solution, but got nothing so I decided to try getting help from TechSupport FORUM.

From what I've it can be CPU or RAM but I don't really know and don't want to waste money without being sure. I have gone through the minidump but don't really understand it.

Can you guys check it, see if you find something?

Thanks in advance, hope you guys can help, I'm desperate

I've been looking at these little tiny computers, and considering using one for a DNS, DHCP, and AD DC computer running Server 2012 R2. I might want to run other things on it too, as I go along.

What I'm reading though, in reviews, is that they aren't particularly reliable, and some seem to die. Are there any that do better than others that you would recommend for such a purpose? Any particular processor that is better?

Thanks!

Hello 8forums,

Really great forum here and I'm glad to join. If I posted this in the wrong section I apologize.

Okay now here's my problem. I'm currently trying to setup Windows Server 2012 for my dad. The main thing it will be used for is storage of movies, photos and backing up Excel documents for work. This is a copy a friend burned him onto a disk and is currently NOT activated. He wanted to check it out before purchasing the license. I have installed it onto an old HP Pavilion a1640n and everything went fine with installation but, now that it is installed I cannot connect his Win8 computer to it. I have Googled this and found a method but, it doesn't work. I'm told to open a browser and enter in the address bar " HTTP://Server-name/connect " (Server-name replaced with then name of his server) and I should get a connector software download page. I do not get this software download page I just get a server not found page. I have tried entering other possibilities into the address bar, too (192.168.0.xxx/connect, adding .com etc.) nothing works. If I can get any help with this it would be appreciated.

I have tried:

Completely reinstalled Windows Server 2012
Reinstalled Ethernet drivers on the WS2012 box

Things they may be causing the problem:

As I said the Windows Server 2012 is not activated.
The WS2012 box is stuck on public network type and the W8 box is stuck on private network type.
The WS2012 box does not show up on my network on the W8 box but,... Read more

What version of server 2012 do you have? Also what client operating systems do you have? Windows 7 Home premium, professional, ultimate?

This can affect what services you can offer to clients.

so I configured my home server to run Server 2012, I had a few questions before I get to far down this road.

if I set up my home to use AD and my server takes a dump, how hard will it be to access the files and what not, will it just be a matter of starting up a server trial vm in my copy of workstation on my desk top and attaching the storage and taking ownership? or would it be even easier then that.

or might I totaly lock my self out of my own data? I am really new to using AD.

secondly I wanted to know if I could run a hyper-v VM of pfsense on my server? maybe vmware player would be better?

it is a supermicro atom d510 with 4gb ram, pfsense will only be used for 4-8 devices and the server has dual intel nics? I am running storage spaces so there is some cpu overhead, but I figure a 32 bit copy of pfsense should hardly effect my overhead... ( vm will be stored on a mostly dedicated drive not in any storage pool)

Thanks for any info.

Answer:server 2012, AD, and Hyper-V

You want to have 2 ADs, they don't take up much RAM or HD space, like 15GB HD and 1GB RAM is enough and since they need to be the DNS server even with cached credentials that would work just fine with the AD down you'd have to access all your servers by IP which can be a pain, stick one on your server and one on your desktop.

Hi, I would like to connect my Server 2012 machine to a new, second network which will only be used for local file sharing with no internet access passing through this second network. My main network is 192.168.1.x/255.255.255.0. The second network will run on a second NIC on the machine with IP 192.168.2.1/255.255.255.0.

This second network is really just one other Windows Server 2012 machine which also has two NIC's; setup the same as above, but with .1.2 and .2.2 and same masks.

The .1.x network works fine, and I can ping between the two machines in the .2.x network. However, file sharing does not work. I think it is because Windows detects this network as Public and Unidentified.

Can someone help me with a solution to this?

The reason why I am doing this is because the NIC's in the .2.x network are infiniband cards that I would like to utilize for a high speed connection between the two machines for backup purposes.

Much appreciated!

Hello all,

I know this is a forum dedicated to Windows 8/8.1, however Im having some issues with Server 2012 R2. I know it is very similar to 8.1 so maybe someone here can help me or at least give me some good ideas. Im having a hard time finding solutions online. If someone knows of a better place or forum to go to for this, please let me know.

Anytime I download software to install on the server I get this error message:

It happens with just about any software I download, doesnt matter what it is. Also, when trying to download something in Firefox, a lot of times it will tell me that the download failed almost immediately. The account Im using is a member of the administrators group. Ive tried restarting, running as administrator, etc. The only thing that seems to work is shift+right click -> run as a different user and running it as the built in admin account. Then most of the time it will allow me to install software or download software with Firefox.

Anyone have any ideas?

EDIT:

Something I forgot to add was if I do get it to download to my own user downloads folder, everytime something is downloaded the permissions are automatically set so I dont have permission to execute the file. This is what Im seeing in the security tab and permissions dialogs:

I have windows server 2012 installed on my vmware running ad, dhcp and dns.
after that I installed the client running windows 8.1.
but when I try to join the domain it says that the domain could not be found.
so I hit ipconfig in my cmd on the windows 8 and it didnt recieve any ip from my dhcp its ip address is169.254.153.23. so basicly my dhcp didnt give me any ip adress since my server is on 192.168.7.128 network subnetmask 255.255.255.192.
in the virtual machine setting I have both network adpters set on bridged: connected directly to the physical network.
when I open the dhcp on my server I have a red arrow pointing down on the ipv4 and ipv6 option but since I cannot ping my server at all I dont think its my dhcp but my vmware network.
does somebody know how to fix this?

sorry for my bad english

Like Windows 8, Windows Server 2012 too has been released to manufacturing today. That means the final code is complete and we are delivering it to our hardware and software vendor partners this week. We will also make the software available to our volume licensing customers in the next couple of weeks.

Hey everyone,

I am trying to write some scripts to change the zone transfer and notify servers for around 1000 internal zones but the Microsoft technet articles on these commands are lacking a lot on the syntax.

I was hoping that someone could point out how to do the spacing on the IP addresses in these commands so on each zone the zone transfer and notify servers are updated

Set-DnsServerPrimaryZone -Name “mydomain.com” –Notify Notifyservers –notifyservers “172.30.4.244 172.30.5.66 172.30.6.38 172.30.36.127 172.30.37.93 172.30.38.167" -SecondaryServers “172.30.4.244,172.30.5.66,172.30.6.38,172.30.36.127,172.30.37.93,172.30.38.167”

I have tried spaces, spaces with commas, and commas directly with no results.

I set up server 2012 this weekend and I'd like to add the VPN role so I can get to my home network from work. I use a pci Intel nic in it for the internal network. Would it be better to use the onboard nic for the vpn and a second ip address? Or does it matter since I have to use port forwarding on my router?

Answer:VPN access w/ server 2012

I would say a single NIC and then let your router handle everything else, unless the server is doing some intense throughput that you need the second NIC for.

Single Instance Store for the backups
Ability to install non-domain (Essentials = a big no on this one )

Hello,

I would like to enlist your help because I've tried everything on my own and I'm stuck. My computer was infected with the Win7 Antivirus 2012 rogueware. I followed the removal instructions from this site and thought my problem was fixed. Everything seems normal on my "administrator" account and I wasn't aware that anything was amiss until I logged into another account and noticed I couldn't open any programs. I get pop up that says the file has no programs associated with it and to go into Control Panel Default Programs and set it up. I went in and I'm still not really sure how to do this. I tried to uninstall and reinstall programs but that has not worked. I thought deleting those accounts and creating new ones would solve the problem but the issue still persists. I don't know if the virus damaged my files or if my computer is still infected. I don't know what else to do but ask for help from the experts.

I have numerous Server 2012 R2 servers running and over the last month i have noticed randomly that my user profile settings are not saving when i RDC into them after a random amount of time.

I know Vista had a bug with saving folder view settings, so maybe this isnt the same after all.

This just happened on 2 brand new Server 2012 R2 standard servers I did as AD/DC/DNS, i set all the shortcuts on the task bar, disable server manager from starting and that is usually it.

I log in 2 days later and it is as if it is a new profile, the server manager opens (which i disable off the bat) and all my shortcuts are gone.

I am not using roaming profiles, and this has happened in Virtual Machines as well as physical.

Anyone else experience this so far?

Answer:Server 2012 R2 plagued by the same bug Vista Had?

No.

Configuration Manager says I have 126 Server 2012 R2 machines and I haven't noticed it. I've got similar setups to what you described on my 20 node Hyper-V cluster, and my shortcuts stay pinned.

Check the event log the next time you log in and see if it's loading the profile or using a temporary.

I have a Synology NAS that I am planning on using as storage for our Windows Server 2012 backups and have a couple questions:

1) I thought I remembered reading that if you are going to use the built in Server 2012 backup that connecting the NAS as an iscsi lun was the way to go, correct?

2) If I create a iscsi target on my NAS, it has to be created separate from the main volume on the NAS? Meaning that I cannot just use all the space and allocate it to the main volume because that would leave no storage space for the iscsi target.

I think that is what I could use some clarification on for now, thanks.
