I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, I'm trying to add the November, 2016 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB3197868) to out install.wim using DISM offline because the same install is failing using the Scheduled Updates process in Config Manager.
Some pertinent (I think) lines from the DISM.log include:
DISM Package Manager: PID=2868 Failed while processing command add-package. - CPackageManagerCLIHandler::ExecuteCmdLine(hr:0x8000ffff)
DISM.EXE: DISM Package Manager processed the command line but failed. HRESULT=8000FFFF
Anyone seen this problem before or had success adding the Security Monthly Quality Rollup updates either via DISM or Scheduled Updates?

Hi, I've had XP/Ubuntu on my system before, no problems, everything was fine.

I reformatted XP and reinstalled it again. (XP Pro, that is)

Now, it automatically boots to Windows without loading Grub to give me the option. I have a 40gb laptop HD, 30GB or so allocated for XP, and the rest for Ubunut's HD storage/swap (which should still be there).

How do I get Grub back up and running?

Answer:XP + Ubuntu... where is Grub?

You could try this:

Hello, this is my first post here!

I got hold of this Ubuntu 10.10/XP (FastTrak (Bios 1.00.0.37)
that was working but really slow, so I decided to format. Not having handled a dual system before, I followed a guide and erased the partitions from within XP interface, and then attempted to boot from the XP CD and attempt the formatting (wanted to format and install XP only) However, I got the GRUB error 22 message that everybody got. The real problem here, is that probably due to my partition involvement, neither the XP or the Ubuntu CD's can load, since it says there is no hard drive detected! Up until the partition deleting everything was fine, and in BIOS Primary IDE Master and Slave are not even detected.

Did I kill it?

Hi,I am planning on installing Ubuntu (using WUBI) but I still want Windows 7 as my default OS when i turn on the laptop but have the option to start into Ubuntu. How can I do thisThanks in advanceRyan

Answer:Windows 7, Ubuntu and Grub

You need a boot manager to fettle the Windows 7 bootloader. Check out:click here;jsessionid=E073896C23997AB59CBC0DEEA09B0E80I used this software in my marathon of sorting out an SSD (I will post this War and Peace epic when I?ve finished writing it up; a future treat for all forum members). It did crash a few times, but always seemed to make the required change, then crash. Also, I was getting myself into a right mess; doing something ?simple? like setting up a dual boot should not cause anywhere near as much grief. At least you can read about what you need to do from the link, even if you try other software.Skeletal

Answer:UBUNTU GRUB Error 21

Ross you would have been better sticking to the other thread click hereI didnt realise you where trying to dual boot from two drives.Im not sure how this is done, though going this way i think you would need to change the bios boot order, basically booting from the Linux drive to get access.Going to be a pain as you would need to change the bios everytime you wanted to boot into windows. There maybe a way around this by editing the boot menu within GRUB.Some of the real experts may help further, lookout for Octal / Lastchip / DieSse these guys know there way around Linux very well.Ive only tried dual booting from one drive and on all occassions its worked fine...well except my first attempt.

Hello everyone! I will list the points:
1) Win 8(installed first) and then Ubuntu 12.04, both on separate drives
2) If Ubuntu is 1st boot drive in Bios, I get GRUB at Startup
3) I can then start Ubuntu, but if I had chosen Win 8 from the GRUB list, Win will not start up, instead I am thrown back to GRUB menu, where I can start Ubuntu.
4) I have the Boot-Repair disk, and I see "Advance Options, Repair Windows", but I don't want to create more chaos!
5) Windows Boot Manager says: File:\boot\bcd , Status: 0xc00000f
"The Boot Configuration Data for your PC is missing or contains errors."

How can I successfully boot Win 8 from the GRUB menu? BTW, if I make Win 8 the 1st boot drive, then I will get a "Preparing Automatic Repair" message, and "Attemting repairs" appears with no further actions.

Thank you in advance for all your help!

Answer:Windows 8 BCD Ubuntu 12.04 Grub compatibility

We need to know what system you are on before we can provide troubleshooting steps. BIOS settings are different for some systems with Windows 8, especially if there is UEFI involved.

Hello so I just got the acer swift 3 and I managed to install ubuntu on it. However whenever I start up the computer goes straight to the acer screen and doesn't load the grub boot menu. Also when I hit f12 to change my boot setting the only thing that shows up is the HDD(SSD). Does anyone know how to get the grub boot menu on this computer?

Answer:Ubuntu Grub not showing up on boot

Here's what I did (I don't have your computer model). I went in to UEFI settings and created a supervisor password.I made sure secure boot was enabled.I added Grub (grubx64.efi) to the trusted secure boot settings. I've tried to help about 6 different people but am 0h for 6.  So am not sure if my suggestion will help.

My partition for ubuntu got deleted, and when i did that, the error "no such partition" came up. I am unable to boot from ANYTHING, which includes cd, usb, floppy, etc. I also cant type any commands at the post screen. i know this has to do with the MBR, but is there anything i can do?Puppy linux does not work either.

Answer:ubuntu and xp error: no such partition, grub

Partitions don't just "get deleted". There are steps that have to be taken for that to happen. How about explaining what you did & why?

Ok so I have W7 and Ubuntu desktop installed on my HDD. I used gparted and deleted my ubuntu partition and set it NTFS. But I forgot about the GRUB loader. Now when I boot up, I get the "error 22".

Anyways, how do I set it so I can just boot W7?

Also! I'm on a netbook so it has to be a USB method.

That's what the repair tools section on the 7 dvd are for correcting mbr entries and other things preventing Windows from a normal startup! In your case you have to load the 7 installer again from the usb source(external hard drive, usb key) that you used to see 7 installed for this.

Right when the installer finishes loading to the point where you select the language and location and you move on to the next screen for the "Install Now" button look down below that for the repair tools link. That will then go through the detection process for the installation you have on and bring you to a menu of options where you then simply click on the Startup Repair. Startup Repair

I just uninstalled ubuntu 10.10 and it worked fine but now when i rebooted I get an error saying:
error: no such partition

I know that you can fix this by using a windows 7 disk and booting from that but i don't have my windows 7 disk because it came on my computer.
Is there any way I can fix this error without a windows 7 disk?

I need help for my laptop which earlier had windows 7 and Ubuntu 14.04 installed.
I wanted to install win 8.
So, I deleted both the drives and when I restarted the system, now I am seeing grub-rescue at boot.
Can anyone help how to overcome this issue asap.
I tried installing win 7 through USB, but the error pops up
" error: no such partition. Entering rescue mode... grub rescue>_"

Answer:After removing windows 7 and ubuntu, I am getting grub-rescue

Not sure exactly what you have done.
Did you delete the partitions from booting W8 Install setup (or other partition manager)?
Did you actually try to install W8 and the restart was part of that process?
=-=-=
Anyway, try Minitool Partition Wizard Bootable CD on a disc or USB drive and see if the Partition Recovery Wizard can get you back to normal.
I'm afraid I don't know the ins and outs of grub

Hi

Welcome to Seven Forums and Happy New Year.
Could you clarify the following?
Are both Ubuntu and Windows on the same HDD or are they on different HDD's?
What was the order of installation -was it Windows first then Ubuntu or the other way round?
Can you log into Ubuntu? Are you able to mount and access Windows from within Ubuntu?
Also have a look at this SF tutorial - Dual Boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu

If you want to revert to Windows altogether, then have a look at this tutorial - MBR - Restore Windows 7 Master Boot Record

Look forward to your advice and regards

Hi there,

My Samsung netbook failed on me today. Last time i used it was last night when i saw a nasty little trojan had infected my machine, so i turned off my wireless and let Sophos anti virus run. Turned off machine this morning (everything seemed ok at that point bar 23 iexplore windows open - guessing that was the trojans doing).

Anyhoo when i went to boot up the machine today it went to the grub menu without issue. So far so good. Ubuntu also boots without issue. So its not a complete HD failure then. The problems occur when i try to boot the windows partition. If i try to just boot all i get is a black screen with bugger all happening. If i boot to windows and then push F8 to get the windows boot menu up no matter what option I choose all that happens is that white progress bar appears at the bottom of the page, fills up about 1/5th of the way and stops and that is it?

Not really sure where to start here, did see a suggestion of using a windows recovery CD but my netbook doesnt have a cd drive :-( Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Answer:Black screen after Grub selection (safe mode fails too) - Ubuntu still works though

So, is your netbook a dual-boot Ubuntu / Win7(Starter)?

Re: Recovery CD... a usb cd will probably work.
It may also be possible to make your recovery "disk" a thumb drive.
BUT... the recovery cd needs to be made before disaster strikes.

Since your issue began with Malware, and
Since some "recovery tools" require a "virus free" drive to avoid completely "borking" an OS partition,
I would suggest that you start with the Virus and Malware Removal forum.
I don't know if they can help you, (working from Ubuntu), or not... but I do think it is the place to start.
Try posting a new thread there , with the same information.
See what they suggest.

Sorry I meant to write X2, not X

Hi all,

Im still gaming it up with my 3000+ OC'ed from 1.8ghz to 2.25ghz currently.. I can have it at 2.4ghz but thats the most I can push out of it with my current cooling..

I have seen a huuge price drops on the X2 3800+ and with my current set up it seems to be the only upgrade I can afford.. ($169 Canadian for the CPU)

Will I see a huge difference in gaming? I play mostly counterstrike: source and some others like HL2 lost coast, eps one, GRAW, and some others...

I also do a lot of photo editing (fairly large files) and some video editing..

The 3000+ is holding up just fine but I do notice some lags when i start up my photoshop and open multiple files while a few other things are running in the background.. thats why i thot a dual core would help fix that...

Would you guys say my 3800+ has some more life into it? Ive only had it for a year.. and Im expecting another half a years life... but at the current rate of these softwares being developed.. seems like thats not the case..

any insight/help/comment/advice would be much appreicated.

for more infO: i have 2 gb of 250mhz ram (OCZ gold XTC) 320GB on SATA... and a 7600GT

Answer:AMD64 3000+ to AMD64 X2 3800+ good upgrade?

Yes, that upgrade would be from single-core to dual-core; that in itself should make a pretty good difference. IMHO: GO FOR IT

My son (26) just returned a long term loan P8B67B Deluxe to me with Linux and Win 7 on it. I upgraded 7 successfully, but after updates installed last night the PC refuses to boot saying "error, no such partition, Entering rescue mode .. grub rescue>" Repeated boot attempts saw it fall into error 53 on the mobo lcd display. Removing one ram stick brought me back to booting to "error, no such partition, Entering rescue mode .. grub rescue>"

Trying to boot just one HDD either gives the above message, or "error, no such device : 521683dd-0417-4a66-b3fb-c6c67b9cc9fo grub rescue>"

I don't need the linux. That was my engineer son. What fixes are there to bring it to Win 10 alone? I don't know the new key or the old 7 key. Should have checked and written it down

Answer:linux grub bootloader failed after win 10 updates

grub rescue>set prefix=(hd0,msdos6)/boot/grub
grub rescue>insmod normal
error: no such partition.
grub rescue>

ls
(hd0) (hd0,msdos1)
grub rescue>set boot=(hd0,msdos1)
grub rescue>set prefix=(hd0,msdos1)/boot/grub
grub rescue>insmod normal
error: unknown filesystem.
grub rescue>

grub rescue>set boot=(hd0)
grub rescue>set prefix=(hd0)/boot/grub
grub rescue>insmod normal
error: no such partition.
grub rescue>

My limited linux knowledge got me nowhere there.

Tried:

At Rebuild Bcd it only found Windows.old

Hi i got a bit of a problem.

I've got Vista GamerEdition 64-bit OS. And a Toshiba - Satellite Pro U400-13G, system specs:

Core 2 duo P8400, 2.26 ghz
4 GB RAM
Intel HD 4500 Graphics
Conexant HD Audio

Now, when i try to install Toshiba Value Added Package, i get this error in the very end of the installation:

ID_ERR_NOTINSTALLTVALZ_MESSAGE

... and the setup fails.

But the install has copied the files to my "C:\Program Files (x86)\TOSHIBA" folder, iv'e got:

Bluetooth Monitor
FlashCards
PCDiag
Power Saver
SMARTLogService
SmoothView
TBS
TOSHIBAValueAddedPackage
TVALZ
Utilities

... in my Toshiba folder, containing a total of 52,4mb. In the utility folder, i try to run "TACSPROP.exe" and is told that "Registry is missing or may be broken".

now... i know this problem most likely because i have a modded version of Vista, but does anyone have an idea as to how i can make Value Added Package run on my system?.

Answer:Value Added Package install failed...

I agree with you. You have modified Vista version. I presume that Toshiba software department create each tool and utility for Vista and of course test it properly.
None of offered versions is not designed to run with version you use.

VAP cannot be modified by everyone and there is nothing you can do. If you use some ?exotic? OS version either it works or not. Sorry but there is nothing you can do with VAP.

I got an update notice for an MSE Client Package to update to MSE V4 (KB2691905).
The update failed on Win7-x64 leaving no AV installed.

I tried to download MSE and I get a "Page cannot be found" at
Microsoft Security Essentials - Free Antivirus for Windows

I did find this page can download MSE, but I'm not sure what it would download/install...
Anti-Malware, Virus, Spyware Protection | Microsoft Security Essentials

If anyone knows more about this, I'd appreciate any info.

I re-booted the PC in Win7-x86 for now, using Avast ...

Not sure if this post should also be in "Windows Updates and Activation" subforum.
I don't want to duplicate a post...

Thanks,
David

Answer:MSE Client Update Package - V4 failed

I got the update notice yesterday and used your first link. When I clicked the Free* download button it showed an upgrade dialog box and the upgrade went smoothly. It's possible that you may have remnants of the old version of MSE that are preventing the new version from installing. This Microsoft KB article may help.

How to manually uninstall Microsoft Security Essentials 2.0.1963 if you cannot uninstall it by using the Add or Remove Programs item

I'd use the Fix it button first and then try to reinstall MSE. Remove Avast first through Programs and Features and then run the official Avast uninstaller to remove any Avast remnants.

avast! Uninstall Utility | Download aswClear for avast! Removal

If the Fix it button doesn't let you reinstall MSE then I'd try the "Let me fix it myself" steps.

Hi Everyone,

Thought I'd try Ubuntu for the first time.
Install to a PC running windows 7 and XP dual boot
It's a raid system with 4 HDD in 2 arrays.

Windows 7 was a nightmare to intall as it just wouldn't see my raid.

To my surprise and amazement the ubuntu installer (running from boot CD) saw it correctly straight away. Install went fine until it told me it couldn't install grub.

I was installing on my first raid array which consists of 2 sata HDD and has a windowx xp partition a windows 7 partition and about 300 gigs of unpartitioned space. I created a 20 gig ext4 partition from the unbuntu installer and a 2 gig partition for the swap file.

I apologise in advance for providing information you don't need and leaving out that which you do, and thank you in advance for your help.

I completed the installation without installing a bootloader as it was the only way I could complete it.

I now need to install a bootloader that lets me boot into my new ubuntu or my win 7 bootloader (which lets me boot into 7 and XP)

Any advice appriciated

Answer:Ubuntu install unable to install grub /dev/sda

I don't have much experience of RAID installations, but my thoughts in the first instance are its likey the MBR isn't being found, so its unable to install it.

I also believe it can be quite quirky to install it to a RAID as well. I would strongly suggest a search on the Ubuntu forums as its very likely your problem has been encountered before.

I am trying to update the BIOS (r06uj47w) on a Lenovo T460 (20FMS26R00). Am using the latest ThinInstaller ([Thin Installer build: 2016-07-05 Version: 1.2.0018]). When ThinInstaller processed the BIOS update package, it rejects the package because the CRC error for the package is wrong. I've manually applied the package successfully. Question for the Lenovo techicians, can you confirm this behaviour? And can this be corrected in the software catalog? Also can you possibly tell how the what kind of CRC ThinInstaller is calculating, so I can possibly generate it myself? Thanks in advance, Relevant output from thininstaller logs: Severe  2017-03-01 , 01:57:04              at Tvsu.GenericPackageInstaller.CmdInstaller.InstallUpdate()              Message: Package Signature Verification Failed, ID:r06uj47w Info       2017-03-01 , 01:57:04              at Tvsu.Engine.Process.PackageInstallerProcess.InstallNewUpdates()              Message: Update Thinkpad BIOS Update - 7 [32,64]/8.1/10 [64] installation failed

OneDrive on my laptop is showing that I am not signed in. I have verified that I am signed into my Microsoft account, and I can access OneDrive online and on my phone.

Answer:Why is OneDrive on my laptop showing as not signed in when I am signed in on all other devices?

I'm not 100% sure, but I believe you might have to sign in separately on your laptop for it.

Hi I am looking at Grub4dos since my recent foray into all things bootloaders. I am gaining a little footing with what I can and can't do (practically!) Although it was definitely trickier than I thought (or I just don't have the same time like I used to... ) Anyhow, I am looking at Grub because it sounds easier to learn the Grub2, and all my systems are pre EFI bios setups. I am looking for a 'Hoyle' maintainable setup. Therefore I decided to "initially" install W7 on C: and XP on D: (both on primary partitions)

But... also I have an existing XP image that was originally installed on C: Now I read somewhere, someone had a setup that would boot into a Master boot loader, presumably Grub, and then select one of two OSs and assign it C: and run it. and the other would become D: while leaving E,F,G, etc intact. That would really be a sweet setup for me because I could then use my existing XP image still since it would still think it is on C while running...

So my question is before I dive headlong into Grub. I know it would be the ideal bootloader for multi (pre EFI bios) But can it assign letters to partitions? so as to switch C and D like that while leaving other partitions assigns as they are? Just looking for a little confirmation and any tips. Here goes nothin'...

Answer:Dual Boot W7/XP using Grub - Can grub assign letters to partitions?

Why would you need to use Grub?

Hi Venkat_iv,
Where did you get the installlation package ?Is it a IEAK installation package ?Have the machines got the latest updates ?
"exit code 0x800F081E "means "The specified package is not applicable to this image".
We can download the installation package here .Pay attention to the 32bit and 64 bit architecture .
http://www.microsoft.com/en-hk/download/Internet-Explorer-11-for-Windows-7-details.aspx
We can try to install the package in a standalone machine to ensure the installation package can work well .
Best regards

Hi,
We have computers that haven?t been updated in years? So the KB 3125574 is the perfect thing for us.

OS: Windows 7 SP1 x86 English
Patch level is somewhere around March 2013 +IE11
If Windows Update is ran, it as around 190 necessary updates to do.

I did install the pre-req KB first with success.

Then I tried to install KB3125574. It ran for quite a while as computer performance is pretty poor.

After the restart, I see that it failed to change the installed state. Status: 0x80070020. In the event viewer.

1st try was done using WUSA /quiet /norestart pushed using SCCM package.
2nd try was done by manual execution. Went faster for the install time, and initiated the reboot manually.
3rd try I ran it with the /log option.

It failed with all try

Log is loaded with garbage.
I managed to get this info from it. (sorry for painfull display)

I've successfully installed Ubuntu alongside XP Pro on my laptop where, until today, it was quite happy. Now, perhaps as the result of an update, every time I open Ubuntu I get this message: "Internal error: HAL has failed to initialize".The most obvious effect of this is that my external HD and DVD writer are no longer recognized. I've tried reinstalling as many relevant packages as I can find but neither that nor command line prompts seem to cure the problemDoes Ubuntu have a version of System Restore? Can it be reinstalled, repaired or removed without wrecking XP?I'd like to keep it but in its present crippled state it's not much of an advance on XP.

OK, so.

I thought I would be clever and try a dual-boot with Vista/Ubuntu on my primary HDD.

lol. fail.

Anyways, I re-installed Vista on my primary and copied over stuff I wanted to keep from WIndows.old.

I think I had tried to put the storage portion of Ubuntu on one of my external drives (drive letter "I" in this case) and told it to leave a 400GB partition available for Unbuntu.

But now after getting rid of Ubuntu, that 400GB partition is still there, and I can't get rid of it. Inside of windows, it'll only let me format 531GB, it won't touch the remaining 400. In the DOS window, it says I have to have elevated mode or some such BS.

I tried GParted after browsing some of the threads on here, but that seems to be Linux based, and maybe not quite what I'm looking for.

Halp?

Answer:Formatting after failed Ubuntu install

GParted should do what you want. Just try to boot into it and see if you can do what you need to do

This laptop was purchased about 3 years ago by my nephew through an employee program and given to me. I recently tried to install a different version of Ubuntu than the one I had previously been using and about 3/4 of the way through the process "hung" and would not complete.  Now, when I try to access the boot options and the bios I am asked for a password. My passwords do not work. I have tried tapping enter 3 times to get the code mentioned in other posts of this nature but just get an "authentication failed" message.  Is there anything that can be done to get my laptop back to working order? Barbara

Hello @Nabashalam, We are sorry as there is no master password or generator for EliteBooks or ProBooks. HP Business Notebooks such as Probooks  or Elitebooks have more stringent security than consumer models infact they don't produce 'halt codes', the password cannot be derived from the Serial Number and the code is stored in non-volatile memory so removing the RTC cell will not reset the password in this case.  Please Contact HP Business Notebook support they should be able to send you a customized SMC.bin file which you can use at boot to reset the password.                                    When talking to the HP rep ask them to escalate your service request.   Hope this helps, for any further queries reply to the post and feel free to join us again !!  **Click the White Thumbs Up Button on the right to say Thanks**Make it easier for other people to find solutions by marking a Reply 'Accept as Solution' if it solves your problem. Thank You,GBL84I am not an HP Employee

Hey guys, here is the back story:

I tried to install Ubuntu onto my HD yesterday, and i ran into an issue during the install (i received a message that said the optical disk or hard drive had an error and that the instal would be aborted). So the Ubuntu install was aborted, and i tried to boot back into windows but received this message:

Load needed for kerenl:
ntoskrnl.dll
hal.dll
kdcom.dll Click to expand...

I have tried to boot into safe mood with no luck. So i tried to do a repair from the XP disk i have, but then i received this error message:

There are no storage devices attached to your system.Click to expand...

This is my first attempt at repairing anything like this, but here is what i am thinking i have to do.

1)re-install the hd drivers so that windows will recognize my disks.
2)try a repair from the XP disk

I am using two Seagate 7200.7 hd's in Raid 0. I think this is probably the cause of my problem during the Ubuntu instal, as it started to make a partition and i am guessing that it only partitioned one of the disks and that is where my data corruption took place. Any thoughts on this?

Now my questions:

1) With a repair, do i lose any data? (I know, I know...backups? none.)
2) Since the XP disk is not finding my hd, does this mean i have already lost data?

If anyone has any ideas for me to try, i would like to hear. I did not have much time to work on it last night, but will have time tonight. I would like to get back to my data in windows, bu... Read more

Answer:hal.dll, ntoskrnl.dll, kdcom.dll - failed ubuntu install

I have another question, i tried to find drivers for the Seagate hd but all the documentation i have read says there are none and that either the mobo manufacturer or windows will be able to take care of this. Am I missing something?

Hi,

I tried to install Ubuntu on my Lenovo y580 and things didn't go as planed. It is the first time I am dealing with Ubuntu and partitions so I'm quite lost. I have Windows 7 Home premium 64 bit.

In short:

I deleted Ubuntu but windows doesn't boot. I have windows recovery dvd and Lenovo system recovery dvds. I tried bootup repair, but it says, it cannot repair. The errors are: 6.1.7600.16385, MissingOsLoader
I also tried different commands in cmd: bootrec.exe/FixBoot , bootrec.exe/FixMbr , bootrec.exe/RebuildMcd ,
I also cannot come to safe mode boot option.

Long description of what I did:

The laptop comes with 1Tb hard drive and small 32Gb ssd for caching and system. Since the system already had 4 partitions, I deleted the partition which is meant as a back up partition and I also shrank the storage partition -> got 2 pieces of undedicated space. Before that I made recovery discs and windows repair dvd. Sadly, didn't make a restore point.

Then I installed Ubuntu using LiveUsb. There was no option (in installation process) to install it alongside Windows, so I created new partition. Everything installed nicely but after that I could not boot Ubuntu. The computer booted straight to Windows. So I used Ubuntu boot repair. After that I could boot Ubuntu, but I couldn't boot windows. Than I used Ubuntu boot repair once more (I saw somewhere that it should help), but didn't help.

In the next step I deleted Ubuntu using Ubuntu os uninstaller and I also deleted the p... Read more

Answer:Failed ubuntu installation, windows won't boot

Hello,
From what I've read it sounds like the grub boot selector didn't come with Ubuntu. When I installed Ubuntu along windows it automatically came with a loader so you could select what one to boot,
Now to get this straight, were the two OS's on the same drive and separated by partitions, or are they on separate drives?

Heyyyy Seven Forums!
I'm back, but wait for more! I've been in 7 for a few days, went over to Ubuntu. I went to go back this evening and got a typical BSOD. The BSOD was telling me that the system was very mad about a Smart Defrag 2 driver. So, I restarted. Same thing. Well, no dismissing this one I guessed, so safe mode. Safe Mode = Backup Partition, so it went ahead and pretended to do something. Sure enough, reboot. Fail, nope nothing changed. Again at fixing, fail nothing happens. Restore Point, fail, nothing happens. Now, I have had this software on here for several reboots, and Ubuntu on here for a year and a half now. So, I went ahead and deleted the driver it complained about. Well, reboot. Nope, nothing again. So now how about that registry. That probably still had something in it. I cannot boot Windows, so no regedit. So, how about in Ubuntu? Nope, nothing. So, what do I do? I'm outta luck and I know I can fix this. Any ideas?

*Crossposted to the Open Ubuntu Forums*
Thank you for any help!

Answer:BSOD: Failed Drivers from Apps, and Ubuntu to Save It?

Okay, I have narrowed it down a bit more. Restore points won't work. The driver it does not like was deleted, by me to remove the issue. It did not remove the issue.
But, I have the command prompt. So, I figure I can use regedit and the program's uninstall exe. I don't remember, but how do I run a exe in safe mode to uninstall? Or can I?
The path is:
C:\Program Files (x86)\IObit\Smart Defrag 2\unins000.exe
So would I type that into the CP, and somehow it run? I have tired it, but it says it cannot locate "C:\", as if the drive is not mounted. Any ideas?

I purchased this laptop through an auction my Nephew's company holds when they upgrade their computers about 3 years ago. I downloaded Ubuntu 15.04 on it which worked great. Recently I decided to try a different version of Ubuntu (Lubuntu) instead of just upgrading to 16.04. After 6 months I decided I did not like it and tried to go back to regular Ubuntu, upgrading to 16.04.  During the installation, the process got hung up about 3/4 of the way through and refused to go any farther so I shut the system down and downloaded another USB copy of the U 16.04 OS from a different computer. When I tried to install the OS I was confronted with a request for passwords. The passwords I had on the machine would not work for the bios, the boot options or anything else. Have I turned my nice laptop into a big paperweight? Thank you in advance for any help you can give me. UncleWiggily195

because i need help so badly i'm going to give you a walk thought of exactly what i did:
ok first i rebooted the computer and booted from the ubuntu disk onto installation and when to the choose partition part. when i was there I noticed that all my free space was labelled unusable.

I then saw that at the top of the list there was a partition in my drive that was 1 mb big so i deleted it, when i deleted this partition all the free space that was unusable because usable and a created a partion from it that was a "ext4 journaling file system", 12 gb big and put the mount point as / solely because that what it said on the dual booting guide.

After that the installation went smoothly and ubuntu worked, however i rebooted the computer to find to my surprise 6 boot options these were :
- ubuntu, linux 2.6.31-14-generic
- ubuntu, linux 2.6.31-14-generic (recovery mode)
- Memory test (memtest86+)
- Memory test (memtest86+, serial console 115200)
- Windows vista (loader) (on /dev/sda2)
- Windows 7 (loader) (on /dev/sda3)

(This was surprising to me because windows vista has never been installed on this computer as I got it last christmas and came preinstalled with windows 7)

After seeing this i chose the windows 7 option because i wanted to check if it was ok and it came up with a message saying windows failed to start and gave me the option of either launching startup repair or trying to launch windows normally. Hello,

Very new to this sort of thing, hope I don't upset anyone. Basically what happened was I deleted the factory partitions on this laptop( HP Pavilion G6) using disk management down to two partitions and attempted to install Ubuntu on the other partition.

After a horrendously failed attempt to install Ubuntu, disk management will not recognize my hard drive even though I can see it and access it through windows. I just want to re-partition it so I can set up a recovery partition.

It wouldn't boot up after the failed install, saying I had no operating system, but I used a win7 repair disc and now it boots up fine, but disk management doesn't show my hd or any partitions.

any help would be appreciated.

Answer:Disk Manager Not Recognizing C: Drive after failed Ubuntu install

In a situation where you attempted the installation of another OS I would opt for the use of GParted Live for cd you can also see written to a small usb flash drive. You first remove the new, existing partitions in order to start off with a fresh C primary.

From the dropdown list of file systems you simply select "ntfs" in lower case letters not the default ext 2 when going to format it. This should also eliminate all traces of the Grub installer used by many distros that is automatically installed as well as replace the traces of VFat in favor of NTFS.
Hello originalspam Welcome to the SevenForums!

Evidently while the 7 install went all well something of the other OS is lingering that has to be removed. That little bit of Partition Table info is still Linux where Windows cannot see onto any Linux drives or partitions as a rule.

This would be one explanation why your drive isn't being seen in the DM even with a 7 install on the drive itself since it hasn't been initialized there yet. GParted is preferred as the best since it is cross platform and will insure the drive becomes all MS. The latest release in iso is 126.1mb in size found at GParted - Browse /gparted at SourceForge.net

The General Documentation for use is seen at GPARTED DOCUMENTATION - GENERALITIES Some additional screenshots can be viewed at GParted -- Screenshots

Before the use of the drive tools on the 7 dvd or for any other paritioning program to see a new C primary created you could also... Read more

I have had a perfectly configured PC running Home Premium like a dream for the last eight months. THis evening I decided to free up some space and install Ubuntu in a separate partiion, a process which aborted itself, completely screwing up my Vista installation into the bargain. No problem, I thought, it's a pain but I'll just have to reinstall Vista and all my apps. Fat chance.

The installation routine gives up at the disk partioning screen with the message that "Windows is unable to find a system volume that meets its criteria for installation". I've tried running chkdsk from an XP disk on it, but that just informs me that "The volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems" It can't be a hardware problem as everything was working perfectly until I tried to install Ubuntu, but I have absolutely no idea what to do about it.

Any and all advice gratefully received

SteveS

Answer:Vista will no longer install after failed attempt at installing Ubuntu

hmm, okay well the problem is vista is there and the other partition isn't empty so the installation disk can't find any empty partition/space.

As for fixing the actual problem(i'm assuming it's a missing bootloader/corrupt bootloader):
- You could try using BootIt NG (The trial version can be downloaded online[google] or go and buy it) to delete the data and partition you were installing ubuntu to.(there are a range of tutorials for BootIt NG in the support section of their site(google it)
- I believe Ubuntu is also a liveOS (it can run off of the disk). If you can manage to get it running then you can use that to restore a bootloader(yet again google the process)
- Or you could use the afforementionned BootItN NG to wipe both the ubuntu and vista partition and then install vista from scratch (like you were going to)

Cheers,
Jamey

Please help, I was trying to install ubuntu alongside windows 10 on my custom desktop. During installation I chose the "install ubuntu alongside windows 10 option". The next option was to select drive and allocate drive space. I chose the were Windows 10 was installed, and distributed the disk space equally for both windows and ubuntu. Later, I pressed continue, it started to process and it gave me a fail message which I can't remember which one. Later, it was late at night so I decided to try installation next day. Next day I booted my pc and windows was gone from the boot manager. This seemed strange as I never got to commence ubuntu installation, I assumed my boot manager was broken. I tried repair my pc option, I tried command prompts that can fix the boot manager that I found searching online, nothing fixed it. I took my pc to a repair shop and they told me my windows partition was deleted. This seemed so strange, how can I have deleted my windows partition if I never fully installed Ubuntu in the first place? I don't have Ubuntu installed on my computer. I chose the "install ubuntu alongside Windows" option which permits dual-boot. Did I actually deleted it and I have to reinstall it? What can I do? Please help

Answer:HELP Failed Ubuntu dual boot installation deleted windows

You should have gone into Disk Management in Windows 10 and created a second partition on the hard drive, then installed Ubuntu in that second partition.
It looks like you tried to install Ubuntu in the same partition that Windows 10 was installed in, and wiped it out.

My buddy has a computer with a problem and he?s asked me to see if I can retrieve the data documents from the computer. The subject computer is a COMPAQ PRESARIO SR5030NX with a Pentium 4 cpu, 3.2 GHz, 1 GB RAM, running Windows Vista Home Basic.

His goal was to create a dual boot computer ? UBUNTU and Vista. What he did was, one Saturday morning without reading directions, he installed UBUNTU, partitioning the computer in two partitions. The computer is now giving an error code of 21 when GRUB Loader starts up. Is there a restore disk or some kind of utility that can undo what was done to the computer. He has no backup disk.

I tried Recovery Commander Ver. 3 made by Avanquest but as their website indicates it?s for XP. They never updated it for Vista and Windows 7. Is there a utility that can undo some of the changes that were made to the machine when UBUNTU was installed, albeit, unsuccessfully.

I have an HP PC running XP professional and I was wondering if I take the hard drive out from the COMPAQ and rig it to my HP via a SATA/IDE to USB 2.0 Adapter device would I be able to see the contents of that COMPAQ computer that had Vista and now UBUNTU.

We?re just after the data files and not software programs. Thanks for any links or advice.

A friend, who is new to computers, came by with an old Compaq Presario Notebook (running Vista) to have me take a look at it and maybe install some software. We decided it might be fun to load up with Ubuntu. I have successfully loaded Ubuntu on other machines before.

So we decided to do a full install- getting rid of Vista completely. Unfortunately the system wouldn't let me load it - it simply hangs 90% through the Ubuntu install. I tried it multiple times using different install CDs- and it hung in same place each time. Of course in the process, Vista was wiped off the machine.

Unable to load Ubuntu, I decided to switch gears and install Window XP (I have an old MS Student version that has never been "activated"). It seemed as if the install is going along fine, until it too finally hangs- saying I don't have a hard drive, or the system can't find the hard drive. I was able to run the system diagnostics on the machine and of course it shows there is NO issues with the hard drive whatsoever.

Now my friend really needs his computer running, and i feel terrible that I screwed it up. If anyone out there knows what the heck might be going on, I can avoid digging up money out of my own pocket to bring it in to a shop to diagnose.

Some notes:
- System is Presario c700 notebook - bios version F.07 1.46 1024mb ram
- Vista was running just fine on it yesterday - no apparent issues except the fan runs continuously
- My friend belongs to a motorcycle c... Read more

Answer:Failed/aborted Ubuntu install-wiped out system. Now cant install Windows XP!

There might be some left over files left on the hard drive which might be causing the installation issues of either one of the Operating System's.

I would try wiping out the hard drive completely with a 3rd party program. I prefer DBAN, a link is available in my signature.

There are many people here that prefer KillDisk also - whichever one will do the same thing for you.

Hello!
Sorry for refresh this old question, but...
Finally i've got solution in my situation! =)
I have Windows 2008 Server R2 SP1.
When i tried to install IE10, i've got this error in CBS.log:
Failed to find file: amd64_microsoft-windows-scripting-vbscript_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600.21238_none_a51187a7608a895d\vbscript.dll
Steps to correct this error:
1. Download this: "Security Update for Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 Edition (KB2706045)"
2. Don't try to install, it wouldn't =)
3. Extract all files:
AMD64-all-windows6.1-kb2706045-x64_ffc82084794531c27bd4a670408d2c4a4d038ad8.msu /extract:.
4. Run this:
dism.exe /online /add-package /packagepath:Windows6.1-KB2706045-x64.cab
5. Now you can try to install IE10.

P.S. I think with IE11 problem will be solve in this way too . =)

Hello, I am trying to create a FreeDOS USB stick that will boot my 2014 X1 Carbon.  I am trying to boot it from the USB stick so that I can run the Thinkpad Drive Erase Utility before selling my machine for parts (the keyboard is loosing its mind and randomly sending keystrokes that make it mostly unusable). I have tried doing the following: 1) Used UNetbootin to download FreeDOS (version 1.0) and apply it to the USB stick.  But weirdly enough, the files it downloads don't at all look like a FreeDOS install.  It has files named things like: ldlinux.c32ldlinux.syslibcom32.c32syslinux.cfg etc. In any case, the USB stick will not boot the machine. I actively choose the USB as a boot device, but it just keeps returning immediately to the same screen asking me which device to boot from. 2) Downloaded FreeDOS directly from the FreeDOS website and installed that onto a FAT32 formatted USB stick (I have tried the same stick as before as well as a new one). This looks more like an actual FreeDOS install as far as I can tell.  It has files named like: AUTOEXEC.BATCOMMAND.COMFD12LITE.ZipFDCONFIG.SYSKERNEL.SYSSETUP.BAT and a folder named: FDSETUP  But again, it won't actually boot from this USB stick. Same as above.  I select the USB stick from the boot menu (the one you get if you choose F12 on startup), but all it does is have the screen go blank for a split second and then it returns to the boot menu.... Ok so I have Vista 64 bit and I wanted to be able to dual boot Vista and Freedos. I used Vista to make a partition roughly 30 gigs in size(I know way too big for freedos but whatever) and called it drive E. I left it unformatted, since the only format option was NTFS, and freedos needs FAT32 or FAT16. So, it is a raw partition. Now when I go to install freedos, it only gives me the option of installing onto drive C. I want to leave my Vista on drive C and install Freedos onto the new partition I made, drive E. However, I am having a lot of trouble doing that. Is there any way to do that?

Thanks for any help.

Answer:Dual booting freedos

Use GParted LiveCD to format that partition as FAT32, then you should be able to install it.

But since FreeDos doesn't require that much in resources, you may be better off just running it from Vista in a virtual machine like vmware.

I just got as new gateway laptop MSI and after the gateway logo goes away when you turn it on it goes to a black screen saying "loading freedos no kernel sys". I dont know what the problem is and I don't know much about the technical stuff in computers. Can someone please help?

Answer:loading freedos no kernel sys

FreeDos is a type of Operating System Like Windows, Linux MAC, etc.. Seems to me FreeDos OS is corrupted.
What do you mean by new? New directly from Gateway which would have a preinstalled OS which would be Windows. Or did you buy it from a friend or pc shop 2nd hand?

You might have to purchase and install WIndows. If Windows is installed on the laptop you might have to access a boot menu to select it. Try pressing F8 during reboot and the Gateway logo.

Questions is what is the specs of the laptop?

CPU
RAM
Video adapter
make and model of the laptop?

I can see BIOS update available for my laptop but currently i have Linux installed hence i cannot run HP software / Tools to apply the update. I have downloaded the executable and i have bootable FreeDOS USB. My doubt is "Can we update BIOS by executing the downloaded exe file in FreeDOS" If yes what would be the steps and should i take any precautions.

Answer:Can we update BIOS from FreeDos

Hi: You can only flash the BIOS using the supported Windows Based BIOS flash for the supported Windows Operating system. There are no DOS flash files you can install independent of the Windows installer. Bottom line:  If you want to flash the BIOS you must install Windows 7.

Hi kvg and welcome to TSF !

Freedos is used by several bootable CD's and floppies, make sure there's no floppy in the floppy drive and no CD in the CD drive.

Are you multi-booting different operating systems on that computer ?

What's the brand and model of the computer and the exact version of the operating system (XP home, pro, media center, what service pack) ? Do you have the XP CD ?

Answer:Lenovo g580 freedos

Hi dragas,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

As the Lenovo G580 that you have purchased which is installed DOS (Disk Operating System), below are the steps to change the settings in BIOS and then install the OS (Operating System) after formatting the Hard Drive:

Turn ON the computer, before Lenovo LOGO is displayed on the screen. Keep tapping on ?F2? Key to enter BIOS menu - Note: To check how the BIOS menu looks and to explore its options Click Here.
Then in ?Configuration? tab click on ?SATA Controller Mode? and select ?Compatible? option.
Now in ?Boot? Tab click on ?UEFI Boot? and Disable it.
Now Click on ?F10? Key to save the changes that are done in BIOS and the computer will automatically restart.
Insert the Windows 7 OS Disc and it will initialize the process of installation.

Here are the steps to create a Partition with the Windows 7 Installation DVD; you can create a partition with the Windows 7 installation DVD:

Boot from the DVD
Click Install Now
At the setup screen, click Custom (Advanced)
Click Drive Options
Here you can create and format partitions
Setup the disk as you want it and make all your partitions now - NOTE: you should make the Windows 7 partition at least 30GB
Continue with install.

Hope this helps!!!

Do post us back if the issue still persists.

Best Regards

Answer:FreeDOS boot on windows HELP

You do not install FreeDOS to your C: drive. If you boot from a USB Stick or CD with FreeDOS on it, the DOS OS is on the removable device. If you remove the removable device, or choose not to boot from it, it will boot into Windows.

With the Firmware configured as follows, will installing Windows automatically format the Hard Disk Drive with a GPT (GUID Partition Table) and remove the FreeDOS which I don't need?

Firmware Configuration (UEFI)
UEFI/Legacy Boot: UEFI Only
CSM: Disabled
Boot Mode: Diagnostics (Deactivates Quick mode)
Secure Boot: Disabled

Hi: There can be one of several different wireless cards that HP could have installed in your notebook. Go to the device manager and please post the hardware ID for the device you see listed there called a Network Controller.  Then I will post the link to the driver you need. The Network Controller is the wireless card that needs the driver installed. To find the hardware ID, click on the Network Controller device. Then click on the Details tab at the top of the Network Controller device window. Now you will see a Property drop down list and it will be set to Device Description. Drop down on that list and select the 2nd item (Hardware ID's). Post the top string of characters that you see in the window. Here is the link to the USB driver you need... This package contains the Intel USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller Driver for supported notebook models running a supported operating system. http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp74501-75000/sp74851.exe

(this model does not have DVDwr and I have already tried to plug in the ethernet cable yet it did not connect to network either. I would appreciate If any of you ppl had a similar hassle and somehow figured it out. Peace

Hi!

After installing the INF drivers for my ASUS P5PL2-E, I got the following message after or during) boot up:

Loading FreeDOS FAT KERNEL Go!

There isn't any problem but I'm just wondering about it.

Have any ideas?

Answer:Just wondering - Loading FreeDOS FAT KERNEL Go!

it must be a driver that your motherboard requires to boot. Can probably turn off displaying it in the BIOS somewhere.

How do I...install xp in a presario cq 61-303sv laptop that comes with freedos

Answer:how to install xp on laptop running FreeDOS

First make sure, the computer starts from CDROM.You might have to change the boot sequence in your system bios. Then use the windows xp installation cd and boot your computer with it.At the point, where you get asked on which partition to use, to install windows, you get a list of the already used partitions. If your laptop has come with only freedos and there is no other date, you might need further more, best choice is, to delete all the existing partitions by highlighting the partition and press D to delete the partition. You'll get another screen, where you have to press L to confirm deletion.Back on the first screen, you get listed only the unpartitioned space on that hard drive.I would suggest to make 2 partitions on the drive, one for the windows installation and another to store your data like pictures, music, documents a.s.o.Therefore, you have to press C to create a new partition. Now you must enter the size of the windows partition. Normally 30 or 40 Gigabytes is more that enough. So to simplify, enter 30000 to create a 30 Gigabyte partition and press enter.Back on the list, highlight the unpartitioned space and press C again. Now the whole rest will shown up and you simply can press enter. After that choose the C partition and install windows xp.The original poster should always write the last response !!!Let us know, if the problem is solved !!!

So i have a new laptop, HP that doesnt have widnows installed and has something called freedos.
I got the iso and used a program called rufus to install it in a USB drive and make it bootable.
But when i connected it to the laptop and chose to boot from that US drive(lexar) nothing happened and it send me to the usual freedos window.
I tried to go from bios and put USB prive as first boot priority but nothing happened either, i ve never really done this so i have absolutely no idea how it works exactly or what i am doing wrong.http://imgur.com/a/PWgTr
Here are the options i am seeing.

Answer:How do i install windows in a freedos laptop?

It could be that the USB drive is not bootable.  Have you tried it on another machine?

This may not work as you may need drivers from HP to get everything working.

If this works as advertised, then it will be a very cool feature.

Sounds awesome.
Unfortunately, the average mobile hasn't got that high specs.

Hello everyone! I've bought a Lenovo z580 (FreeDos), I wanted naturally to wipe the HDD and partition the 1To to install windows and some linux distros. What I've noticed is there are 4 partitions already there: first one sda1 has boot, lba flags, /dev/sda2 lba flag, a huge unallocated space (expected) and then an ntfs parition /dev/sda4 LENOVO_PART with a "diag" flag, I assume that it's for recovery, can I just wipe them and start from scratch? (the fat32 doesn't contain any EFI related info) and if not, which ones should I keep? Thank you very much! EDIT:here's the output of fdisk -l through a live medium:  Disk /dev/sda: 1000.2 GB, 1000204886016 bytes255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 121601 cylinders, total 1953525168 sectorsUnits = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytesSector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 4096 bytesI/O size (minimum/optimal): 4096 bytes / 4096 bytesDisk identifier: 0xc3ffc3ff   Device Boot      Start         End      Blocks   Id  System/dev/sda1   *          63    61448624    30724281    c  W95 FAT32 (LBA)Partition 1 does not start on physical sector boundary./dev/sda2        61448625   122897249    30724312+   c  W95 FAT32 (LBA)Partition 2 do... Answer:Questions regarding z580's partitions (FreeDos version)

hi Acid_Rain,

Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.

Most computers that are sold without an OS shouldn't have a LENOVO_PART on them as it should just be the  /dev/sda2 created by FreeDos. Try to check if you have a Windows sticker on the front or back part of the unit.

If you have a Windows Sticker, try to:
1. Press the One Key Recovery button to restore the original OS.
2. Create a Gparted Live CD or USB and set the LENOVO_PART as active and restart the PC to boot from the recovery drive.

If the recovery attempt fails, you can just wipe all partitions and install a fresh copy of Windows on an unallocated or NTFS formatted drive.

Hope this helps.

The best possible way is to create the USB by the Windows 7 USB download tool. It will include all necessary drivers in the image.https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/windows-usb-dvd-download-toolYou also have to use the retail version of Windows (buy the licence) not OEM that you download from the internet.
