100% Disk Usage and Occasional 100% CPU Usage

Question: 100% Disk Usage and Occasional 100% CPU Usage

Hello, I have been trying to overcome this issue of 100% disk and CPU usage for quite some time before but no solution has worked. It is especially bad when i start my laptop or when i turn it on after hibernation. I tried using this https://chaladi.me/2013/10/11/how-to-fix-windows-8-100-disk-usage-issue/and i have also resetted my laptop to factory version so now its empty, but it is still facing this issue. How can I stop this problem? Much thanks!!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Every 10-40 minutes, the application I'm currently working in [whither it be skype, L4D2, or firefox] becomes unresponsive, and after a minute or two, the window turns white, notifying me that it's not responding. This unresponsiveness quickly spreads to other open processes, rendering them frozen as well. I can still use the mouse, and it appears rainmeter still responds [updates, showing barely any CPU usage].

Steps I've taken to try and resolve this:
Using only one main program, still does it
turning the computer off and on again
Memtest is clean
chkdisk passes
MBAM/MSE scans return nothing
defragged
no memory overflows that I can see

While troubleshooting, I noticed that during the 'fit of unresponsiveness' the disk usage light on my tower is solid, but when I looked at the disk usage in the resource monitor, no processes whatsoever were using it [screenshot related]

If any more specifications are needed, I'll be happy to elaborate.
Thanks!

Answer:Frequent unresponsiveness, 100% hardware disk usage, 0% software usage

It could be indexing. What if you turn off indexing just as an experiment?

Hi guys, hope you can help me please. I'm not too computer savvy so sorry if I'm missing something important or I say something dumb. I'm really frustrated and I'm trying my best to learn and solve this problem.
So I bought this Vaio with Core i5-3210M, 4Gb Ram, Windows 8 64 bit. I had really high hopes for it, coming from an i3. For the first few weeks it worked fine, but then it started to freeze while watching movies. Then it started happening all the time, and the cooling fan became consistently noisy for working at full capacity.
I was used to opening task manager on older systems when this happened to see if there was a non-responding program and force it closed, so I noticed Task Manager offers some more features in Win 8. Here, I see that CPU usage is high, staying always around 70% and from time to time reaching 100. At this moment, the process taking the biggest slice is called VCS System Tray with 58%.
What's perhaps more concerning, is that Disk usage is almost constantly on 100%. And by this I mean it reaches 100 and stays there for long periods of time, perhaps up to 20 minutes, then it falls down a few seconds and up again to 100. During this time the computer is excruciatingly painful to use. To even open a program takes forever. When this happens, it seems that Chrome is at the top of the list of processes with most disk usage, with about 1-2Mbps, but this sometimes changes and the list can be led by System, Utorrent, Octoshape, VCS System Tray, Communication... Answer:100% CPU usage, 100% Disk usage, cooling fans full speed

Hi, welcome to the forums,
Go to Device manager(right click bottom left corner), uninstall the "VAIO care" driver, get the new driver from Sony support:Sony eSupport - Computers - Support
Install and see whether it helps, check your system for virus infections with Malwarebytes as well.

So on Saturday of last week my PC started to run slow. I open up task manager to check what was going on and I am greeted with it showing me that I have very high CPU usage, and constant capped-out disk usage.
Over the course of the past few days I have reinstalled Windows 10, updated drivers, completely formatted my previous hard-drive, and just today I received a new SSD. However, my problem STILL persists, and I'm all out of ideas on what I need to in order to solve this.

My Motherboard is an ASUS Z97-P with an Intel i5-4690K processor. If you need more specifications, or a program to be run, then I would be happy to do so.

For further information, the system ran normally when booting from a Windows 8.1 hard-drive, and did have a blip of normal performance on Windows 10, but resumed misbehaving when the computer was re-started.

Answer:Constant 100% Disk Usage, 60-80% CPU usage. Both happen when idle.

in Task Manager sort by CPU usage and see what apps are responsible.

hey all! ever since i upgraded my laptop's win8 to win10 im getting these usages... and the machine is runnig REALLY SLOW....
i saw that it's a common problem so i looked up some solutions and tried the following:

1- i changed the registry - ?HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management? and changed ?ClearPageFileAtShutDown? value to 1
2- adjusted windows 10 to "best performance" in system settings
3- i disabled many startup programs
4- i defragemented the C drive
5- uninstalled all the programs that i could
6- I disabled "Show me tips about Windows"
7- changed the power settings profile

NONE OF THOSE WORKED. PLEASE HELP!

Hi, In November I purchased a new Lenovo Y50. It's the non-touch 1080p version with the GTX960m. Recently, I've had issues with the fans spinning up while the laptop is idle. I opened task manager, and there are random spikes of 100% disk usage on startup and sometimes when I leave the machine idle or I'm using Chrome. Recently, I've noticed strange spikes in CPU usage too, with occasional bouts of 20% usage for seemingly no reason.  I contacted support, and they weren't able to find any issues, but had me install Lenovo Solution Center and do a full run of the tests, which didn't find anything wrong. They also had me disable all non essential startup programs and see if the problem happened again, and it does. However, cpu and disk temperatures were normal, so I was told to just monitor the problem and see if anything changes.   My system's definitely not functioning properly. Startup is notably slow considering it has the 8gb ssd and I never had issues with the fans coming on when I first got it. I've heard that there are issues with the hybrid 8gb ssd/1 tb hdd, so I need some input on this. Why is this happening? Is it a hardware issue? Firmware? My case number is 8006295558. I would greatly appreciate some help from a rep or anyone who can give me a hand with the issue.

Well in the past 3 months I've been having great difficulites with my computer.

First off I get the occasional lag when my CPU usage goes to 100. For example it could happen at any time such as when i go to click on an Icon it will lag for 5 or 6 seconds then open.

Yes I did reformat and it came back gradually.

In Online games about every other minute or so I get the lag in game and recieve 4-5 frames per second pretty much freezing me for a second or two.

I check in my task manager to see what is taking up all this CPU usage and it basically tells me it is whatever program i am running at the time. Say i am running a game it will say the game is taking up 100% of my CPU or if i am using AIM it was that is using 100%.

Comp specs:
Pent 4 2.4ghz
80gb hd
1024 ddr ram
ti4200 g4

Any help or advice is welcome

p.s. I suck at the internet

Answer:Occasional Lag and CPU usage a one hundred

hello fitzy, thats a cracking rig btw..so your computer slows down at full load is it only happening when you are on-line? are you on dial up or broadband? if you are on dialup any game will lag online except chess or suchlike, even with broadband you will get lag. if you know how to check your ping rate the lower the number the less lag you get i:e ping=100m/s ping=1500m/s
this is the time it takes your computer to go to the game server and back again it's measured in milliseconds.. if you are having cpu problems offline do a couple of system checks. check for virus,
overheating. is the cpu overclocked from bios? if it is set it back to default frequency..overall thats a good computer setup, it may be something simple slowing it down
hope this is some help

I upgraded to Windows 10 near the beginning, no big issues.

Problem started about a week back. I came home to a BSOD. The computer also hangs and restarts more often now.

Ram usage is extremely high. I have 16GBs but usually only 50% is used, even with 40+ chrome tab and a running game. The ram doesn't seem to clear too - I'd close most running programs and ram usage will still be high. A restart would be required.

Now, even with nothing on, ram usage is almost maxed. As you can see in the attachment, it's windows services that are causing the cpu/ram spikes. Even task manager is using 10% cpu. since when did task manager use 10% cpu.

I've googled and some thought it was an nvidia drive issue. I've installed older drivers but it's still a problem.

Help?

Thanks

Hi,

I have recently noticed a bit of a performance issue on my HP laptop running Windows 10 Home.

What happens is, if I am not doing anything on the laptop, but am not putting it to sleep (i.e. idling), it stays at a low CPU usage. However, after a while (usually about a minute?), the CPU usage rockets up, and also affects my CPU temperatures (goes up from ~35'C to ~50'C).

The processes that are the culprit, as defined by the detailed tab of Task manager, are either "svchost.exe" or "System" - the latter is described as "NT Kernel and System" and is linked to ntoskrnl.exe.

Any way of controlling this would be greatly appreciated.

Note: the laptop came preinstalled with Windows 10 and doesn't have many programs installed.

New Y710 40542AU has cpu usage pegged at 100% several times in the first week since new.  May be associiated with Veriface or the camera, since camera is always "occupied" when this occurs.  The camera beomes available again and the cpu usage returns to normal when the user with the problem is logged off.  Anyone else have this problem or any advice?

Answer:Ideapad Y710 with occasional cpu usage pegged at 100%

Hi, Did you try opening up task manager to see which process was taking up all the CPU cycles? That might help to pin-point the problem. You could also turn off the camera with fn + esc to see if the problem is camera related.

Hi,

I spent a few painful hours at my inlaws house last night with no luck. Symptoms are as follows:
Occasional 100% CPU usage from two processes: rng.exe and NotifyAlert.exe (Might be unrelated, I uninstalled some Dell Support stuff and haven't seen this any longer)
Browsers (IE and FF) are redirecting search results to spam sites.

I'm out of the loop as far as good malware removal strategies since I thankfully haven't had any problems with any of my own PCs. I ran SUPERAntiSpyware and MalwareBytes, also installed Microsoft Security Essentials. Previously they had AVG 9 which was up to date, but didn't catch this. I've also tried rolling back to a previous restore point with no luck.

Here's the logs, any help would be appreciated!

Thanks,
-Brett.

The title says it all and i dont think it spyware btw because i frequently use SpbotSD and malwarebytes and it didnt see anything .. recently downloaded cccleaner it improved the pc's speed a little bit but the startup situtation stayed the same..

Answer:Slow Startups,100% cpu usage at task manager and occasional freezing at startup

have you tried stopping some of the applications from starting at boot up? they can really slow your pc down when starting. make sure to leave antivirus to run though. also, do you have enough ram (512mb minimum) for xp to run smoothly.

Hello,

This is my very first post on bleepingcomputer.com and it's for getting some information on possibly analyzing a hijackthis file.

Here's the situation:

My mother owns a Dell PC purchased last year with Windows Vista 32 bit, Avira Antivir is installed and I tell her to keep it up to date. She uses it just to send emails, chat with friends, send pictures around, use facebook and watch the occasional humorous video and she is certainly not a gamer.

Her last bill showed she used over 16gb for that month, 16GB! For email, pictures and facebook! I went through her PC, made sure she had her av updated, made sure her windows firewall rules were valid, made sure she didn't have anything suspicious installed... and still, I'm drawing a blank as to what could be causing her usage. I figure she's being possibly hacked into and blasting emails? I didn't notice any of that though..

Anyway, I read I'm not supposed to post the hijack this log until someone asks for it so I'll wait before doing so.

Thanks in advance.

Edit:
If this is the wrong forum, I apologize, I'll do better next time

Hi all,

I'm having a bit of trouble with Windows 8 on my laptop (I've named my laptop Romulus for future reference in this thread). First off, let me give you a brief history on Romulus' journey thus far:

1.) Bought pre-built from ACER with Windows 8 64-bit installed.
2.) After playing around with it for a bit, I formatted the C drive (deleting all partitions) and installed Windows 7.
3.) Hoping to test out the new Windows 8.1, I reinstalled Windows 8 (a clean install from Microsoft this time... not the original bundled version from ACER). I have yet to install 8.1.

This is where I've noticed a few problems. Specifically, my CPU and Disk usage keep spiking to 100% for no apparent reason. Literally right after booting Romulus, before running any programs/apps, I see these spikes. I boot up, go straight to the desktop, fire up Task Manager, and watch sadly as the performance graphs tease me with those tall lines. The CPU spikes only last for a second or two and usage generally stays pretty low, but I'd still like to know why it's jumping like that. Disk usage spikes to 99-100% more frequently and stays there a bit longer. I've noticed perhaps very slight performance problems and some mouse lag, but I haven't been able to prove a correlation here.

Regarding drivers, these problems arose without any drivers installed (straight Windows 8 installation). Thinking the obvious, I installed all of Romulus' drivers listed on the ACER web page for this model, but the problems persist... Read more

Hijack log below

Two weeks ago my Quark 7 stopped working - it will start and come up with the splash screen, but then will not go any further - a list of processes shows it's running at 50 cpu usage and 78944 memory usage. I have tried uninstalling reinstalling and have ran Norton's Antivirus, Spybot Search and Destroy and CCleaner to no avail. I have attached my HiJack log below.

The main programs that I use daily (and yes Quark is one of them) are the following

Adobe Photoshop CS3, ACDSee 9, Outlook express, Quark 7.0, Internet Explorer, Dreamweaver 8

I still suspect a memory problem though as I am unable to boot the system with 4 sticks installed unless I have the XMP profile already activated. 3 sticks is fine, 2 sticks is fine, 1 stick is fine, different ports are fine. I tried different sticks in different slots and no change.

Greetings,

I formatted my computer, and after installing windows 7 again, my physical memory in task manager is very high, and cpu keeps jumping up and down.

I looked at the processes tab, but noticed absolutely nothing taking abnormal memory (private working set.) Then moved on to performance tab> resource monitor, and found svchost (I think it was netsvcs in parenthesis,) hogging all the memory. After ending the process, I still have had high memory usage, and surprisingly, do not see a process anywhere in task manager with high numbers next to it, so I have no idea what's happening.

I have noticed that my windows 7 folder keeps increasing in size, currently about 26 gigs, and a helper told me that it's normal because the updates in windows 7 have a different compression method than windows 8 and after, however when I had previously installed windows 7, fully updated... my folder size was normal, so I assume it can be done?

I originally posted in the Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs section, however I did not find malware on my computer, so unless it's very new malware, I am certain windows 7 is causing this problem.

For antivirus, I am currently using a free trial of Norton.

Advice?

P.S. This is probably better for the hardware section, but can constant high physical memory, and cpu usage ruin my hardware? I am avoiding using things that take up high cpu and memory right now, and it's currently about 1.2 g... Read more

I still suspect a memory problem though as I am unable to boot the system with 4 sticks installed unless I have the XMP profile already activated. 3 sticks is fine, 2 sticks is fine, 1 stick is fine, different ports are fine. I tried different sticks in different slots and no change.

Hi all, hope you can help.

Every so often, when listening to online radio streams/playing games etc my computer just goes crazy. I get a lot of hard drive 'chatter' and lots of fan noise and everything slows to a crawl. My music will start jumping and skipping and there is a long delay between me clicking the mouse and the action happening. It happens when no other programs (for example, my AV/AS) are due to scan. When I look at my Task Manager the two biggest eaters of memory usage are fm.exe (game, it normally eats a load but makes no substantial difference to the comp speed) and ekrn.exe (something to do with my AV, not quite sure what it actually does though)

I am running Windows MCE SP3 and am using NOD32 anti-virus and Sunbelt CounterSpy anti-spyware. The definitions on both are updated daily and both scan daily. I have also defragged the comp and do so weekly. The other programs I use are CCleaner and Glary Utilities, both fairly regularly to clean up my comp when I was working as an internet researcher, but less often now.

I do not get any error messages/BSOD's or actual freezes. Everything just slows right down. Could I have picked up a form of malware/virus that my AV/AS isn't picking up? Could one of my previous spring cleans have been too aggressive? Or is it simply too much load for my comp (2 year old Dell)? It is 3MHz, 1G RAM, kinda your bog standard media comp from 2007.

Your thoughts and advice are greatly appreciated as it's starting ... Read more

One of the ways that malware tries to hide is to give itself the same name as a critical system file. However, it then places itself in a different location on your computer. Another techinique is for the process to alter the registry and add itself as a Startup program so that it can run automatically each time the computer is booted. Hi,
I have a i7 3770k at 3.9 ghz, so stock with turbo boost.
I tried oc'ing to 4.5 ghz, didnt fix the problem.
Basically, in some games i get high cpu usage and at the same time low gpu usage.
My system is i7 3770k, gtx1070, 16 gb ddr3 ram, corsair hx850i psu.
In witcher 3 novigrad, which is cpu heavy, i sometimes get gpu usage at like 70% which causes stutter, at the same time cpu usage is around 85%.
When i leave town i get 95-99% gpu usage again and my cpu usage drops.
Dying light same, if cpu usage is high my gpu usage drops.
Battlefield 1 is normally fine in 95-99% gpu usage, except st quentin, but others reported this too.
What can this be? My cpu shouldnt be bottlenecking. Like i said i trid overclocking, didn't help.

Windows 10's message was typically IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, suspecting a driver issue I reformatted to 8.1 which I am on now. The message I'm getting now is PFN_LIST_CORRUPT.

Hi,

Just yesterday I realized that my computer was acting super slowly and I even received a blue screen of death out of nowhere. Upon checking my processes list,I found many suspicious processes that continued to multiply when I tried to end them. These included: PresentationHost.exe, msdtc.exe, dllhost.exe, prevhost.exe, cmd.exe, msiexec.exe, conhost.exe, and even a notepad.exe that seems to be invisible. A malware is most likely behind this, and is causing my computer to perform very slowly and be almost unusable, I have managed to run FRST, but Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is not even opening for me. In addition, this multiplying issue seems to only occur when I am connected to the internet. I would highly appreciate some help!

Recently my computer has been plagued by High CPU and general malware. I believe i've removed most of the malware. But I can't seem to fix the issue with the dllhost.exe and multiple explorer.exe running.

First i ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, then I ran Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit. Found lots of issues. all resolved. Ran them recently again and no malware was found. Still have the explorer.exe issue though.

Then I used combofix, but it changed nothing.

In the meanwhile i've just been ending the explorer.exe processes that take high CPU. This allows me to temporarily use my computer before they start popping up again.

Answer:dllhost.exe, multiple explorer.exe's, high CPU usage, and memory usage

I don't know what you need me to post. Hopefully this might provide some insight.

My friend, who has a very low income was given a Dell Optiplex GX240 running Win2K Pro. 512MB RAM

To help her out, I got rid of porn, viruses, and spyware using:

Ad-Aware, AVG spyware and AV free versions, Trend Micro House Call, Spybot

I checked the task manager, and has constant 100% CPU usage, avg memory usage

The system runs, but apps open slow, so I tried some freeware reg cleaners:

CCleaner, Eusing Free Registry Cleaner, Wise Registry cleaner

After hours of searching on web, the fixes I found don't work, so I give up. Can someone help. My friend doesn't have the money to pay someone to fix this, and she was so happy to get a new computer.

Can anyonre help???

Hi,

I just bought my brand new laptop and have loaded Vista Ultimate 32bit onto it for about 5 days. I noticed something unusual about Vista's CPU usage while idle in the task manager as well as the Resource monitor.

I have attached two pictures to show my problem. Notice that my CPU usage is always at about 40-60% on both of my cores. However, the average CPU usage per process shows that it should actually occupy about 15% to at most 20% (by adding up all the highest average CPU for processes in the first picture). The second picture I attached shows the current CPU usage sorted by max usage, and again it does not add up to 41%!

Although at 40-60% usage, I do not notice any major performance impacts, as both cores are not loaded to the max. However, I do notice Vista chewing up more battery than needed when I have my laptop running off batteries. Because the max frequency for the processor would always need to be raised to around 60% even when idle (instead of say... 10-20%).

I have searched online for various problems relating to high CPU usage, and most of the responses are about tracing down which process is the culprit. Well, this is where I'm stumped because it all does not add up! According to the process view, everything is normal but my system resources are still get constantly chewed up by something invisible it seems.

Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated at this point!

Answer:Vista Ultimate 32: high CPU usage does not correspond with process usage

Posting two more image to show this problem from the task manager...

Notice that the system idle process is 84, and yet CPU usage is 42? I always thought that:
CPU usage + idle process = 100?

Perhaps things are done differently with dual core processors? This is my first dual core so I'm not sure. The second image shows how both my cores are being used roughly equally, at around 50%.

Ok, I am literally KILLING myself over this!

I installed Windows 7 64Bit over XP around a month ago and it was so good that I recommended it to my brother who was previously on XP too. We got him a copy of the 32bit version as he has only 2gb of memory, and he installed it on his machine. However, he constantly had high CPU and RAM usage (Even though no programs were obviously taking it all up in his task manager) and it was making his computer sluggish and slow. Everything was freezing and hanging and it was a nightmare.

I spent a day looking all over the net to find out the problem, but could not fix it at all, no matter what the hell I tried. So he reverted back to Windows XP. (A nice waste of money on Windows 7.) His Windows XP now runs smoothly and is all as it was.

Suddenly today, after my brother connected to my Windows 7 homegroup (or workgroup rather) through his Windows XP machine, my computer got the EXACT same problem as he had ages ago! I have been browsing Google all day downloading s**t, changing things in my computer, trying EVERY possible fix that people have suggested and that sound legit. Nothing works!

So now all of a sudden, my computer is sluggish, games are jumpy and jittery, video rendering times are slooooooow.

Here is a picture of my resource monitor:
You can see the physical memory usage being at 45%. I've ordered the memory usage of each service in highest to lowest.
I just CANT see where the problem is!
(I've tried leaving my homegroup to see... Read more

Answer:Windows 7 random CPU usage and high physical memory usage!!!

I can tell you what is probably causing your problems. AVG.
When you are looking at memory, do not sort by Working set, sort by Hard faults.
Hard faults is what causes things to slow down. Plus you have plenty of memory not to worry about usage.

How can the actual exceed the max quota? I deleted all previous restore points, and did a disk cleanup, but nothing changes.

I have the following config-> Windows XP Professional SP2 which I have been using for the last 3 years.-> Updated Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 running for the last 1 year.-> No new software were installed in the last month that I can recall of.Suddenly I get this problem:1. I ran an application one day (it was winrar), and nothing starts.2. Task manager shows CPU usage as 50 (I have dual core), while memory usage remains at 84k3. After a few days vlcplayer.exe started giving the same problem-> So, I reinstalled windows (formatted my C drive and installed a fresh copy). -> Everything worked fine. I was using Irfanview.exe with no problems, but then one day again, IrfanView.exe did not start. Same problem : CPU usage was 50% while memory remained really low.-> I uninstalled it from C:/program files and installed a new copy in C:/program files --- this did not solve the problem-> I uninstalled it again from C:/program files and installed to D:/ Now it works fine...-> But now again I got the same problem with media player.exeI have tried a virus scan with Kaspersky (updated) and a scan with spybot. They both came out to be clean.Any ideas?I cant reinstall Windows as that did not solve the problem.

Answer:CPU usage increases to max (while memory usage doesnt) when I run a application

I dont know if this helps: I read somewhere about creating a drive image for easy backup. So I tried DriveImageXML, but it gave an error regarding CRC check which related to bad sectors i suppose. I ran a scan disk before installing a fresh copy of Windows. Obviously, this hasnt helped either.

Hi folks

I posted this problem at Spyware Specific forum, but was advised to post here.

Recently when I use RealProducer Plus v.10 to convert mpeg2 clips to rmvb, it takes a long time to do so. When I checked, RealProducer utilises over 90% CPU usage - as much as 94-95%, causing total CPU usage to be 95-98%. I have scanned with Norton and Adaware - all ok. Then I used Spy Sweeper - it found and cleared Csmin. Howveer, the problem still remains when I use RealProducer.

CPU usage without using RealProducer

CPU usage using RealProducer

Will my CPU will be damaged if CPU usage is so high?

Please help to take a look at my .exe processes. Are they OK?
What is PQV2iSvc.exe?

Please advise. Thanks a lot!

Answer:RealProducer utilises over 90% CPU usage? Will high CPU usage damage CPU?

To answer your question about PQV2iSvc.exe is part of Power Quest drive image and Norton Ghost drive backup software.

Converting video formats can be a resource intensive process. Unless your system temps are getting really high there shouldn't be any damage to the CPU.

For over about a month now my DSL internet has been dropping randomly. It disconnects completely for a few seconds to fifteen minutes, then picks back up. This happens usually every twenty or so minutes, it's very random, so this is just a mode. The speed itself is not affected (when it's on, it's fine). I've been able to determine that the reason is somewhere on my desktop.

It's a HP Envy with intel i7 3.40 GHz. About a year and three months old, and using windows 8. I typically use google chrome for browsing, only occasionally firefox. I am connected to my internet wirelessly, which is broadcasted from the router a floor beneath me. The router is plugged into a phone jack, shared with the house phone (no problems with the phone what-so-ever). Tbaytel is my provider, and I use Kaspersky antivirus. Network details; Speed-72.0 mbps. Sent-13,936,*** and counting. Received- 244,015,*** and counting. Security type is WPA2-Personal, Encryption type is AES and we have a security key set up (That we recently changed to see if it would help, and of course it didn't).

This is what's scary;

Processes under the task manager brought up nothing, but looking at the Wi-fi under the Performance tab showed that something is definitely going on. The amount of Wi-fi usage spikes HUGE amounts! But at the time I took this screenshot, I was only running an antivirus full scan (which turned up nothing), google chrome on this site, and had both the task ... Read more

Answer:Internet cutting out from MASSIVE usage, but usage not accounted for.

About your new router...
How long have you been using it or since when did you got it?
How long has it been opened? Have you tried powercycling it? (Turning it off and then on)

Also, Have you tried testing it while your laptop is directly plugged in on your router with an ethernet cable? (Try speedtest.net)

Does this happen to other of your computers or device?
Does Tbaytel do line testing when you called them?

HELP!My computer has become ridiculously slow, taking minutes to do nothing. The computer is quite old (4-5 years), but has had XP and MS Office installed fom Day 1. I have not added any other software which might explain the slowness. When the computer is slow, if I Ctrl:Alt:Delete, the CPU usage is sometimes very high (80%) or above, but not always, however, the Page file usage history is always at least 80/90% of capacity (value reads as nearly 400Mb).What is the page file usage history? Is this likely to be why my computer is slow and can any settings be changed, or do I have to bin the computer and buy one which works? Thanks

I have been having a big problem the last week with my computer. Everything is running incredibly slow. I opened the windows task manager, and it has shown very high CPU usage, often fluctuating between 80% and 100%, though sometimes staying between about 5-20%. The page file usage has been conistently high, the lowest being in the mid-600 kbs, while most often staying around 720 or 730 kbs. These patterns seem to be unaltered by the amount of programs I have running (the problem occurs even when there are absolutely no programs running) or whether I'm on the internet or not. I am very ignorant when it comes to computers, but I suspected it was some sort of spyware problem. However, after scanning with Norton 360, Spybot's Search and Destroy, Lavasoft Ad-Aware, and Microsoft Defender, only a few low-level threats showed up, and fixing them led to no improvement in my computer's performance. The slow functioning seems to be directly related to the times when the CPU usage is high.

My OS is Microsoft XP. My processor is 1.73 GHz. I have 504 MB of RAM. I will attach my HijackThis log below. I hope I haven't forgotten any necessary information, but I would appreciate any help you can offer. I'm becoming very frustrated.

Hi,Bought a G510 running w8.1 in May.  After 3 months of untroubled use I started getting all of the above error messages and problems. Restored to factory image. updated bios and updated drivers problems still persisted, all hardware tests were fine. Contacted Lenovo, laptop needed to be shipped to Germany, from UK as it appears there are no facilities in the UK??, to be examined.  The solution... Lenovo replaced the hard disk. Laptop was working fine again until a couple of weeks ago (about 3 months elapsed since original repair!!)  and exactly the same problems have returned.  The joke is I dont even use the laptop seriously as I dont trust it, and it spends 99.9% of its life as an expensive web browser machine. Surely the drive hasn't failed again, are they really that bad, or does the real problem lie somewhere else? Either way I'm totally unimpressed, no doubt having to send the laptop off for another 10 day holiday in Europe. :-( Anybody got any suggestions whats happening here?  Many thanks

I've recently been getting 100% CPU usage errors, and over the top memory usage, then my computer for the most part locks up. I've reinstalled WinXP, fixed IE settings back to origional settings. Ran antispyware programs and AVG. At first my problems started when I played games on Facebook, getting script errors. As I've been doing a lot of studying on these problems, I got to thinking maybe I need more memory. Then I start getting 100% CPU errors.

I've noticed in my task manager in Processes there are lots of svchost.exe listings, and a few other programs that are listed more than once. Im attaching a picture of this list, in idle mode. Wandering if anyone else sees anything that may look odd.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

So, it's exactly as the title says,
I downgraded back down to windows 8 after feeling some sluggishness with my windows 10 OS.
It started off fine, but once I started downloading and installing necessary windows update files, I noticed once again the sluggishness I felt before, except this time my System Disk which is also my SSD drive, was being used up to 100% while my CPU was completely fine

Can someone please help me out in this scenario.

I still can't find this thing. I need help. I got Hijack this, and then I realized I don't even know what I'm looking at. 26 instances of missing or lost files. And now it looks like there's a new drive (E) on my rig that I didn't put there with 99mb of space on it...

Every time I start my computer in the morning, my CPU usage and PF usage are very high, slowing down the system, for about 45 mins to 1 hour. I have included images of the Performance Tab and Processes tab of Task Manager. The image of the Performance Meter is not a totally accurate reflection of the issue, because usually the CPU usage bounces between 60% and 100%.I am using Windows XP Home EditionVersion 2002Service Pack 3Intel Pentium D CPU 2.80 GHz1.5 GB RAMI have already used CCLeaner and Uniblue. I have scanned with MS Defender and AVG Free version. That is the current AV software I am running. I am also using Norton Ghost to maintain a backup of my computer. Ok, so recently my desktop (a very NICE desktop) has been crashing and such. Even when I'm not in Maya or Photoshop, I see in the task manager the usage jumping around like crazy. I've noticed that svchost.exe sucks 100,000% or more of my usage and I can't load Counter Strike Source anymore without it crashing to the desktop or forcing me to restart my PC because of a blank screen. Question: 100% Disk Usage

A week ago I did a completely fresh install of Windows 8 64 bit and everything was working great. When I booted up my laptop on Wednesday I noticed it was running terribly slow. When I opened task manager I saw that disk usage was at 100% despite the combined total of data transfer being 0.8MB/s.

The problem occurs constantly if I set my laptop power mode to balanced but only occurs intermittently at high performance. I've run a chkdsk and everything is showing up fine and bizarrely there is no slowdown whatsoever on safe mode.

Any idea what I may have done wrong?

Question: disk usage

how do i see hard drive usage in a circle graph?

Answer:disk usage

If you mean how much space is being taken up, go to Computer, right click the disk and select properties.

If you mean Disk usage, type "resource monitor" without quotes into your start menu search, click it, and in the overview tab, find Disk. This is not a circle graph, but I wouldn't know why you would want a circle graph for something like this.

Hope this helps

hi guys

i ve this issue i can t solve:

my disk usage is blocked at 100/100 and pc is burning like hell and i don t find what is making it

i m adding some screenshots if someone can help me to find out the issue:

Answer:Disk usage at 100/100

Few things you can check:
go to: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Search\Data\Applications\Windows and look for the file
Windows.edb and check the size of this file. This is a database file associated with Windows Search feature. If it's too big, sometimes it can grow up to many GB's then it might cause high disk usage when Windows Search trying to rebuild the Search index. You can delete this file but first you need to disable the Windows Search service then re-enable after deletion.Run Task Manager->Startup and disable everything then reboot the PC to see if it fixes the problem then re-enable one by one, reboot until the problem occurs again, then that's the culprit.Run Task Manager->Details, then right click on the Title->Select Columns and put a check on I/O Reads, I/O Writes, I/O read bytes, I/O write bytes then click OK. Click on the Title to sort by I/O Read, I/O Write to find out which process utilizing the Disk I/O most and take appropriate action.

This just recently started happening to me. If anyone can give me any help or tools to use I would greatly appreciate it!

Thank you very much!

Question: 100% Disk Usage???

I have recently purchased an Alienware Alpha, and the first couple of days that I had it, it ran like a dream, however tonight I noticed that everything was going extremely slow and not responding, I was also having trouble uninstalling things. I googled the issue and found out that many of people have had the issue caused by Windows 8.1. I tried to disable Superfetch, as well as Windows Search but there was no change, it was still 100%. I also tried fixing the RAM, is there any other way to fix this? Please help, I make the rookie mistake of not purchasing a warranty and now I am freaking out.

Question: 100% disk usage.

As the title says my pc is bugged with the 100% disk usage issue.

The things I've tried so far are:
1. Disable BITS, Superfetch and Windows search services. Although BITS seems to gets enabled back on its own after a while.
2. Performed a chkdsk /f/r to fix the system errors.
3. Switched windows updates from automatic to manual (not sure if that helps much).

I've read through some other threads but could not find the correct solution. Is there something else that I'm missing which could possibly fix the issue? Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Answer:100% disk usage.

Welcome to the forum. If you open task manager click at the top of disk it will sort it into order so you can then see what's using the disk it can be a short term thing while it builds it's index

Hello, i have been years reading in this forum, but i have never been a member, now i need your help!
I have a laptop (Lenovo z50-70) (Bought 2 years ago)
Specs:
Intel core i5 7200U 2.5GHz - 2.71GHz
RAM: 6 GB
64 bit windows 10 home
1000 gb Hard disk
Asus page drivers

The past weeks my computer has been getting slower, specially after turning it on or coming from hibernation, it takes about half an hour for the pc to get usable. Sometimes it doesnt get better and takes a lot to open programs and in certain cases it also freezes and gets unresponsive so i have to force shut down. And when the computer turns on it takes about 20 minutes to get to home screen, sometimes it enters the "scanning disk for errors" screen before home screen. Also in task manager the Disk is always at 100% even with no programs open.
I have tried:
-Disk defrag
-Chkdisk comand (No errors found)
-Disabling the services (Superfetch, etc... )
-Full System Scan with bitdefender

I?d like to add that in all users the computer is always at 100% disk usage and starts up and boots very slow, but the freezing only happens on my user. The administrator user is fine.

Thank you for your time!

On my computer (HP) there is this application that tells you how much of something you are usseing. I am wonderring what the Disk Usage (Bps) means? Sometime when I am doing nothing it will go into RED which is bad?

Answer:what doe's Disk Usage (Bps) mean?

It would be a speed measurement of "Block per Second", "bits per second" or "bytes per second".

I have no idea which right now
Well, hold on -- none of the above for HP apparently -- its "kilobytes per second"

Question: 100% Disk Usage

Hi there.
I upgraded recently to Windows 10. I don't know it this has anything to do with my problem or not. I hope you folks can tell me.

I run lots of large file for my hobby, Photography, which I've noticed is slowing my PC down to a walking pace.
My photos are one drive E. When I use Task Manager to check, it shows a usage of 100% on drive E while I access my photos.

I've tried compressing and defragging the drive.
Does anyone know why this should happen and what I can do about it?

See attached image

Answer:100% Disk Usage

What size is your E drive? Is it a physical hard drive or just a partition?

Windows needs at least 15% free space to run efficiently.

Have you tried moving some of your files to another drive/partition and defragging?

Question: 100% Disk usage

Fresh installation of Windows 10 and disk still running at 100%, honestly can say this is by far the worst laptop I have ever owned. I've built and upgraded a few PC's, laptops and Mac's and never had any issues. Would it be worth me upgrading the RAM? It only has 2GB. Its only used for surfing the web and hangs on that most of the time.

Question: 100% Disk Usage

Hi there,

Recently, my laptop keeps spiking to 100% disk usage.
I've tried disabling Superfetch and Windows Search, adjusting the virtual memory, checking if I have the AHCI controller, check disk, none of it worked.
The only thing I haven't tried is System Restore (since I only noticed this after the last update) - I tried it, but it didn't work because it said the drive might be corrupt, and it still didn't work after chkdsk.
Any other ideas?

Thanks

Answer:100% Disk Usage

Have you knocked the laptop while it was on / off because if you have then it may be corruption causing 100%, you know what that means an unrecoverable o.s, have you got a system recovery disk you could use ?

Also is it SSD or HDD ?

Question: 100% Disk Usage

For the past week or so my computer has begun acting increasingly odd. When opening programs my disk usage will spike up to 100% and my computer will freeze. sometimes I have to restart to be able to use it again. I've tried several things such as anti-malware and messing with executables that exacerbate disk usage. none of these things has helped

Answer:100% Disk Usage

Hi @Ecvalor!

One thing you can try in order to fix the 100% Disk Usage is to disable Superfetch (if you're using Windows 8 or 10). In order to do that you can follow the steps in this article:
http://www.technipages.com/windows-enable-disable-superfetch

If this doesn't help with the issue, then I'd suggest to make a backup of your most important data on another location and then run a diagnostic test on the HDD so you can see what its health is currently. You can use the manufacturers tool in case there is such available in the official manufacturers website since it's tuned to the specific firmware of the drive. For instance, if you have a WD drive download Data Lifeguard Diagnostics from here:
http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=3O5mw0

Once the results are ready feel free to upload some screenshots so I can take a look.

Answer:Disk usage 100%

Hi Thank you. So this suggests lots more stuff is loading in normal mode. I use the Piriform tools, and Ccleaner may very well help, as would Dfraggler. Then I get a more adventurous and use Sysinternals, which has lots of proggies that you dont need, but is small overall and wont be a burden.  AND you can delete it when you have finished with it. Ccleaner can look for duplicates, clear out cache and trash, uninstall stuff and (accept the backup for registry entries) tidy your registry. Sysinternals; Autoruns then Load Order and Pagedfrg are the primaries. If in doubt please ask.

Question: Disk Usage

Hello all, I have some disk problems it may seem very irrelevant, though I need the windows to be below 8GBs is at 8.6 now and with the removal of features and optimisation it will be there though I have questions about some folders to perhaps drive it down even further.

These are my top usages above 12mb:

Blue: To be optimised, just a cleanup of unneeded files/folders to remain. (ignore)
Red: To be deleted, no need for these.
Orange: To be or all ready symlinked.
Purple: Proposed to be symlinked, if you think my decision is bad tell me.
Green: Nothing to be done
Grey: Need more information

Assembly folder - Can I symlink this, is used to store .net assemblies for shared applications... would moving this cause a slow down?
IME - I know I can optimise this by deleting the help files they're imagedisk files are these easy to move or is it best to leave it? And by best I mean will it cause error to symlink.
Microsoft.net - Can this be moved safely is the framework but updating to all the revisions for backward compatibility purposes takes a lot of memory (I have yet to update this copy of windows) so if the whole folder can't be symlinked can only the not often used versions be moved?
INF - is this safe to move, this would be ideal to move for me for streamline purposes will it cause problems?
Config - Some things look moveable, others don't can this folder be symlinked safely without performance loss?
Note: WinSxS - I know this folder is deceiving with regards to size. M... Read more

Question: Disk usage

i am facing 100% disk usage even when the laptop is idlechecked it with the hp hardware diagnostics tool, everything seems fineand if i update win 10 to the latest it's more issue with it thete, so i had to format it and use an older version.

Answer:Disk usage

I would start by following the directions in this thread about removing the Upgrade stuff to see if that helps: http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/2066-windows-old-folder-delete-windows-10-a.html  Method 1: refer to the link below to troubleshoot some common reasons for Windows freezing. Windows hangs or freezeshttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/2681286 Follow all the steps given and check if the issue is resolved. Method 2: Optimize the hard disk Optimizing the hard disk usually clears up such issues. Refer to the link below to learn how to optimize the hard disk. Improve performance by optimizing your hard drivehttp://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/improve-performance-optimizing-hard-drive Further reference: Optimize your hard drivehttp://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/optimize-hard-drive#1TC=t1  Final option : Try to use CCleaner, this program removes unnecessary application/programmes/files from your local drive. You can download it from : https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download Hope this helps, for any further queries reply to the post and feel free to join us again  **Click the White Thumbs Up Button on the right to say Thanks**Make it easier for other people to find solutions by marking a Reply 'Accept as Solution' if it solves your problem. Thank You,GBL84I am not an HP Employee

Question: Disk Usage

I have a laptop computer running Windows XP. I recently had a disk usage error that stated I had used up my free disk space. I deleted some files to get it back to where I could use the computer. When I check the properties on my C drive, it shows that I have used 129 of 142GB. However, when I check each individual folder in the C drive, it shows that I am using maybe 25 to 30 GB. What could be taking up all of the disk space?

Answer:Disk Usage

Probably a hibernation file or something similar. 129 is extremely large though even including the hibernation files and possible restore points.

My first suggestion would be to do a disk cleanup and defragmentation. After that see if you are still supposedly using 129 or really anything beyond say 40 gb. If you are start looking at other causes like a possible virus or error within windows.

Question: 100% Disk usage!

My disk usage always goes to 100% because of this process "wsappx" with a very high disk usage at startup with  10-30+ mb/s but after 10-15 minutes it lowers down to 0 mb/s and then after a few minutes it goes up again.

Answer:100% Disk usage!

That file's not part of Windows 7.  However you neglected to mention what version you're running or the make and model of your computer.  You could run Malwarebytes and your antivirus program in Safe Mode if you don't know what this thing is.

Answer:100% Disk Usage

Hi,

What type of hard drive is it standard or solid state? Does it sit at 100% all the time or during a particular operation? In task manager what is the name of the process that seems to to be utilizing most of the hard disks resources if any?

On a side note could be that your hard disk is reaching end of life do you know how old it is?

Thanks

I have always had performance issues on my low-end laptop (core i3, 4GB RAM, 320GB HDD, Windows 8.1).
As a heavy browser (+20 tabs on two browsers at any given moment), I've always blamed my laptop "freezes" on high RAM usage, I was wrong. Even with 30 or 40 tabs, RAM usage is rarely above 60 or 70%, while I have recurrent 100% disk usage peaks (especially after boot-ups).
My real-time AV is Avast Internet Security with hardened aggressive mode enabled, whenever I have a slowdown, I see Avast processes causing 100% disk usage. I've just disabled hardened aggressive mode, and it looks like things are a little better now.
I've looked it up on Google, I found many lists of AVs ranked by RAM usage, but only a few topics with conflicting feedback about disk usage. Some said WD had a very low disk usage, others claimed Bitdefender, Avast, Avira, Webroot, Norton, NOD32 etc. had a low disk usage.
How does Avast compare to other AVs in disk usage department? Was the hardened aggressive mode the cause
of high disk usage? And if so, is Avast without hardened aggressive mode worth it? What's the internet security solution with the lightest disk usage?

Answer:AVs with low disk usage?

if u want a av with low disk usage go with webroot. But i would go with SecureAPlus. Whitelisting software+12 av engine in the cloud.

Answer:100% usage on disk

Hi, you have a lot going on there.
1. Tiworker.exe is triggered by Windows update, so it seems possible a Windows update is being applied.
2. Norton (n360.exe) is clearly active.
3. Edge is using a huge amount of resources.
4. SearchUI.exe is part of Cortana, and is also active.

Then you have svchost.exe - perhaps related to one of the above.

1. Before you downloaded this game, was your system behaving normally? I.e. could you be confident CPU and disk use was low?
If so, do you have a system restore point available set before your game was installed?

If you do, I suggest you try using it.

If not, first try uninstalling that game, and enable services you have disabled.

Then please post a screenshot of your task manager
(Screenshots are most helpfully posted using the 'Insert Image' icon above your post to the left of the video icon).

Also then please post a screenshot of your task manager in Safe Mode for reference if you still have problems in normal mode.

Note: to organise the columns of the task manager, click the tab at the head of a column so items with greatest resource use are at the top.

Please also post a screenshot of your Update History (Settings, Update and... , Update History
