I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Whenever I try to do a virus scan my computer reboots. I get the following message when I come back up:

''Windows has recovered from a serious error''

Problem caused by Intel Storage Driver (IdeChnDr.sys)

The problem was caused by Intel Storage Driver (IdeChnDr.sys). Intel Storage Driver (IdeChnDr.sys) was created by Intel Corporation. This product is no longer supported by the manufacturer.

For more information about Intel Storage Driver (IdeChnDr.sys), go online to the Intel Corporation website.

If you are unable to fix this problem and continue to receive errors, you can also remove Intel Storage Driver (IdeChnDr.sys).''

When i put on Speedfan while doing a virus or spyware scan, i get the message that my CPU is overheated. My normal temp is 29/30 degrees, but when the scan starts it goes up to 35/36 degrees and suddenly my computer restarts. System temp is 30 and is not causing problems.

I tried to put a big fan in my computer so the air flow is cool enough but it wont stop the problem. What should i do: more fans? I can't imagine it will stop the problem. How is it possible that my CPU is overheating and my system isn't?
Change my hard drive? Speedfan online analysis is saying my hard drive is doing ok. One question: is Intel Storage Driver something i can remove as a program or is it hardware that i need to remove by hand? As you might have noticed: i'm a newbee in this category

I've cleaned out the computer several times to the point where no infections or such show up. I also got a cooling fan for my comp because I thought overheating might be the problem. The thing is the comp will be fine for 2-3 days and then all of a sudden a blue pop up screen comes up. Something about IRQL_NOT_LESS_NOT_EQUAL.I have no idea how to get rid of it. Clean install of W10 and many updates are showing as 'Requiring a restart to finish installing'. Despite several restarts and full shut downs this situation remains. Windows update itself says it is up to date.

Answer:automatic restart showing a blue screen

* These crashes were caused by memory corruption (probably a driver).
Please run these two tests to verify your memory and find which driver is causing the problem.

If you are overclocking anything reset to default before running these tests.
In other words STOP!!!

1-Memtest.

Download a copy of Memtest86 and burn the ISO to a CD using Iso Recorder or another ISO burning program.

Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool
Boot from the CD, and leave it running for at least 5 or 6 passes.

Just remember, any time Memtest reports errors, it can be either bad RAM or a bad motherboard slot.

Test the sticks individually, and if you find a good one, test it in all slots.

Any errors are indicative of a memory problem.

If a known good stick fails in a motherboard slot it is probably the slot.

2-Driver verifier

Using Driver Verifier is an iffy proposition.
Most times it'll crash and it'll tell you what the driver is.
But sometimes it'll crash and won't tell you the driver.
Other times it'll crash before you can log in to Windows.
If you can't get to Safe Mode, then you'll have to resort to offline editing of the registry to disable Driver Verifier.

I'd suggest that you first backup your data and then make sure you've got access to another computer so you can contact us if problems arise.
Then make a System Restore point (so you can restore the system using the Vista/Win7 Startup Repair feature).

In Windows 7 you can make a Startup Repair disk by going to... Read more

hia strange issue happend to my Thinkpad E570 (core i7, 8GB, GTX 950m). when I was playing COD infinitie warfare I found my graphic card in stilll intel, I install driver on NVIDIA again (I even downloaded original driver from NVIDIA website) and it fixed problem, but each time I restart my computer this problem comes again. and I should install driver again. (each tome I install NVIDIA driver this shows me there is no 3D option installed for this graphic card) I read lots of forums to fix this problem, some of them said choose this program to run with NVIDIA by default, I did, but nothing happened, some of them said chose manually for this game to run with NVIDIA. but as you can see in picture, this option is turned off. some of them said disable intel graphic card from device manager, but when I did, NVIDIA card didn't work also. some of them said disable intel HD from BIOS. but there is no option to disable intel HD in BIOS . (can I do this from BIOS???)please help me...I thought maybe this issue is because of COD, I installed PES2018, but I have the same problem with any gamenoteif it can help) few days ago I bought ADATA SX8000 SSD PCIe and install windows 10 64bit on it, after that I have this problem.note: all my drivers is up to date. Hi, I'm still 3 days old to Windows 7 and i had this problem.
I installed the latest driver for Windows 7 for my display card ATI HD3870 and downloaded the driver from the official website.
My problem is, after installing the driver.
The installer didn't prompt me to restart the computer.
But since my notification area didn't appear any of ATI icon so i restart it.
But yet after restarting my pc i still don't see any icon and i went to check program files and i saw ati technologies but inside it i don't see a single item.
It's an empty folder.
So did i went to device manager and right click on my display driver and press update driver but it says I'm on the latest driver already.
This is so confusing! Anyone help me please??!

Answer:After installing ATI Driver, restart but shows nothing

i think i know why, maybe because i only downloaded the "Display Driver" but not the catalyst software suite, downloading now, hope it works !

Hey guys, I've read a bunch of posts of this happening to people too but it doesn't seem like there was a permanent solution to any of them. I just installed windows 7 on a dell dimension 3000 and im using the onboard video. Everytime i reboot it wants to automatically install the "Standard VGA Display Driver" even though I uninstall it and install the Intel Display Driver that works much better and actually plays movies. I even moved the display.inf out of the windows folder but now when i restart it still trys to install another driver over the one i have and just says that it cant find the driver for the device. And since I cant install the drivers then plug the device in, i'm kind of stuck in a rut right now. Any suggestions? I really appreciate it.

Answer:Windows 7 keeps installing its own driver restart

Answer:Blue screen frequently showing then forcing restart

I'm pretty sure there is damaged hardware at fault here, which may be caused by shipping issues or manufacturing flaws. This is a relatively common occurrence with PC hardware in comparison with other industry products, especially with cheaper brand items.

Anyways, you can first give us a JCGriff Report. If there's the possibility of drivers being cause, turn on DV as well.

For hardware tests, you can perform some of the following:

GPU: MemtestG80/CL
CPU: Prime95 (Torture Test; Large FFTs; 9+ hours)
RAM: Memtest86+ (7+ passes)

Also run HWInfo with Sensors only checked. Record two 30-minute logs: one during idle, and one during high load (gaming, benchmarks, etc.).

Hi,I have serious problem with my HP 8760W Elitebook.I have upgraded to Win10 and everything was OK, I was more satisfied as with Win7Pro. But first time after month and second time after 3 months win10 crashed to repair screen and nothing was possible to do only clear installation of win 7 with disk format.I use all new drivers and bios - F.62. So I decided to stay with Win7, but now I have problem with graphics (nvidia Quadro 4000M). When I install nvidia driver (I have tried several versions including 341.95) it needs restart and then I get black screen during start and sometimes blue screen and it restarts  again. Only thing that will help is to use F8, start windows in safe mode and remove nvidia driver. Then it  again automatically load standard vga graphics driver. It uses only 16MB of memory, allows to run in 1920x1080 mode, but nothing more. Windows experience index is 1 due to graphics. What can I do to start running my nvidia quadro 4000m? Thank you very much.

Hello Here's the problem: I have no audio. All devices are ok, and soundmax integrated digital HD audio shows fine in device manager. What I do is uninstall that driver, and reinstall. (I have win xp, and I'm using the one downloaded from lenovo directly named 7ka117ww Tried deleting first (when running setup) or directly reinstalling. Every time I install audio comes back, but then dissapears after rebooting. So I have some audio when I install (I'm being prompted to restart, and that time I hear audio ok).Next time the story starts over. For instance right now, in control panel > audio Is all grayed out (and no icon in tray) Can you please help me?

Answer:No audio again and again t61p (installing driver works just until I restart)

Sounds like you might have audio muted in a bios setting perhaps. I'd look through the settings and if you can't find any place it was disabled try pressing f9 key to load bios defaults, then f10 to save and exit bios. Since it works until you reboot that's the only thing I can think of offhand, but I've worked on over 100 T61 models and never seen this problem.

Hi,

I'm having a weird issue.

Every time I Restart my Laptop, the Lock Screen does not show the Welcome Screen and skips directly to the User Account login screen. Actually, it shows a darkish blue screen for a couple of seconds and then jumps to the user account login.

When I use the logout function or the shutdown (and I power it back on) everything works normally.

I have ran SFC / Scannow in windows (8.1 by the way).

Any suggestion ?

Thanks.

Answer:Welcome Screen (Lock Screen Pic) not showing on Restart

I may have misunderstood what you are asking but does this tutorial help?

In Windows 8 and 8.1 there are two "Lock" screens.
The user lock screen is the one that displays when a user locks the PC while still signed in to Windows, and when the user is selected on the sign in screen, times out, and returns to the lock screen. Each user is able to change their lock screen background image to an image of their choice. The default Lock screen image is the one that displays when there are no users currently signed in to Windows or selected on the sign in screen.

Hi all, as the thread title says, I am having trouble with my laptop. I just reformatted and did a fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate x64. I have installed all Windows Updates and installed all drivers in the order Dell specifies here: How to reinstall drivers in the correct order | Dell US EXCEPT for the video drivers. I should mention the video drivers I am trying to install are the Intel HD graphics drivers for my onboard graphics. This is because as soon as I do so and restart, Windows hangs on a black screen right after the "Starting Windows" screen and my laptop fan goes on full blast. The computer at this point is unresponsive, forcing me to do a hard power down. The only remedy after this is to either do a system restore to before the video drivers were installed, or boot into safe mode to uninstall the video drivers manually and run CCleaner. The laptop runs fine running on the default "standard VGA drivers" with the exception of poor resolution and unable to run anything graphics intensive. I've tried using drivers from both Dell and Intel's websites, via .exe installers and manually via .zip folders. I've attached my SF diagnostic .zip folder. Also forgot to mention I am running the most updated BIOS with default settings loaded. Please help and thank you in advance!

So i had to reinstall Windows 8 on my PC, and as usual i install Drivers and such first. Normally it worked, now after i restart the Computer to finish the Driver Updates, i get Black Screen after Windows 8 loading Screen. Can someone help?

Answer:AMD Driver Update. Black Screen after Restart.

If the harddrive is busy/active youll have to wait it out.

Sometimes theres allot to do and unfortunately its doing it while there is no display making you believe something's wrong.

If the harddrive is calm, and there is still no video, then you'll have to start the computer in safe mode.

Depending on your laptop this may be easy or difficult depending on how new your laptop is and the boot speed..

Get into safe mode and uninstall your video drivers, then reboot.

Safe mode is usually entered by repeatedly pressing F8 during boot, but on newer systems it moves too fast..

Others have has success wailing on the spacebar during boot causing windows to respond as if a boot error and gives you the diagnostics option and safemode.

Hi everybody, hope someone can figure this one out.

I got an LG 24x10x40 CD-R/RW drive installed as Drive "D" on my system. My old 52x cd drive is now drive "E".

The cdrw drive records great on CDRs and CDRW's.

The problem is this: Let's say I record a couple files on a CDRW and then delete one file or even just rename that one file and then take the cdrw out of the drive.

When I then put the cdrw disc back in ... Drive D then keeps saying it is not accessible, that the device is not ready .. like as if there is no disc in it. But if I then restart the system everything is fine. It's real annoying having to restart my system so often when doing lots of work on the cdrw.

It seems as if the drive just can't keep track of what's going on when deletions or changes are made to any of the files.

Has anyone ever encountered these problems with a CD-R/RW drive? I phoned the store back that installed my drive but they aren't any help at all, needless to say I won't be going back there anymore lol.

Any advice or suggestions you might have would be really appreciated, thanks for reading this !

EDIT 20/01/13: Okay so I have left it a while to see if I still ran into problems and unfortunately I am.

I THINK it must have something to do with my wifi driver or something as this is how it goes:
- Connected to internet
- Suddenly lose connection
-Computer tells e no networks are available, nothing i do changes this
-Restart computer
-Sticks on restart loading circle
-Blue screen

For the last two days when restarting my laptop (Aspire V3-571G) it hangs on the restarting spinning circle and then crashes to a blue screen saying to search online for DRIVER POWER STATE FAILURE for more info.

On successful boot I am greeted with a message asking if I want to send the info to microsoft troubleshoot and that a .dmp file hasbeen created in my mindump folder.

I have honestly no idea what could be causing this.

Can anyone offer me any help? I would really appreciate it.

I have ran the tool provided and hopefully the .zip file will help shed some light on my problem.

After restart i send the bug report to Microsoft. After that i am forward to the Microsoft webpage. It says, that this crash is a product of a failed driver in my system. But they can't tell me, which driver is the cause for the crash.

Has anybody else the same or similar problem? Can somebody help me?

Thanks and cheers,

Yanick

Answer:Satellite M50-181: OS crashes down and makes a restart when using Winrar

Hi

How about older versions of the WinRar?
Did you try to install other versions?

I have never heard about such problems. I use also a Winrar (Older versions) and all works properly.

Did a couple of Google searches and didn't come up with a solution that worked.

The problem is that when i plug in a hard drive the computer cuts off in a few seconds. The power led and hdd led stay on but everything else shuts off. I have to completely turn off the p/s by the switch to get it to start again. This had been happening for awhile but it would only do it once and then it would start and run fine. I bought a new hdd as an upgrade and i tried to run it but whenever it was plugged in it constantly made the computer turn off. I tried to use the old hdd but it does the same now. Whenever they are not plugged in the computer boots and posts fine. I figure this is the p/s, but I wanted to make sure there wasn't anything thing else i should check or worry about. So any suggestions would be appreciated. I don't want to get the wrong part. Thanks in advance--

Hi, let me make a list.

1) Bought a new C-Media 5.1 audio card.

2) Inserts into PCI-slot makes computer auto-start.

3) Windows does not auto install the card, but the drives on the CD works perfectly and the sound is fine. No problems in device manage.

4) But when I shutdown, the computer restats. Happens every time. Have to shutdown manually on the button.

5) Tried a different PCI-slot, but problem persists.

6) Tried temporarily removing the card and windows shuts down as intended.

Solution?

Whenever I connect to the internet at my brothers house (whether wirelessly or with a cord--its the same either way) I get a text box saying windows has encountered a critical error and will restart in one minute. It only happens at this location--its fine everywhere else. Only my computer has this problem--other laptops that usually use my home network are fine.

Anyone know what the problem could be?

Answer:Connecting to the internet at my brothers house makes computer restart

Please show the following for your PC connected at your house (or somewhere) and for one of the PCs connected at your brother's house. Be sure to specify which is which. Maybe we can find a clue in the output.

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt:
(For Vista or 7 type CMD in the Search box after Start)

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

This has just been occuring recently. I have only had this laptop for about 3 and 1/2 months and it was working fine before. I have been trying to convert to digital and import all of my CDs into my computer. After importing many CDs, I started having problems with my cd-rom.

I have been using I-tunes to import CDs, but this also happens after experimenting with Windows Media Player. The CD will import about half way, and then the speed will start going lower and lower. The cd-rom will sound like it is revving up and stopping, importing a little, and then repeating the process. Eventually it will stop importing, but continue to make this revving sound like it is trying to but can't. At this point I hit stop importing, but it keeps making the noise. After exiting the program the computer will continue to make this revving sound and the CD will not eject. I then have to restart/shut down the computer to stop this noise and get the CD out.

After this started happening, some CDs that would previously load would not even load. When I put some CDs in, the computer will just make a "blearp" noise and not even spin the CD. When I go to Computer and click the E drive it will say no CD is in, and then eject the CD that is in there and say to insert a CD.

Any help is appreciated. I have tried searching for this problem on google, but the symptoms other people were having seemed different. THANKS!

Hey guys. I'm exhausted! I've been trying to chase down this problem all day. Here's what I got.

I just moved over my old system into my wife's case. Everything worked fine in mine and moved over:

mobo: Gigabyte GA-7vt600 1394 w/ amd 3000 cpu and 2gb of ram
psu: Enermax ELT500awt (500 watts)
hd: new seagate 160gb ide w/ xp pro freshly installed.
and gpu: bfg 512mb 7600gs (which seems to be the issue)
(if I'm leaving out anything important, let me know)

Again, everything worked peachy in my machine, I essentially just switched cases minus her dvd drives and wireless card. But now, whenever I try to install the nvidia drivers, the screen goes blank.

The first issue was that I get this error: "The NVIDIA Setup program could not locate any drivers that are compatible with your current hardware. Setup will now exit." Which I didn't really mind because I wanted the latest driver anyway. So I went and downloaded 178.13 which just came out yesterday or something and everytime I try to install it, it eventually goes blank (though the rest of the computer still runs).

So then I have to boot into safe mode to uninstall it. Then I tried both 91.47 and 93.71 from suggestions off of some old posts and I get the same error.

I downloaded the latest 4-in-1 mobo chipsets and installed them. As well as the latest directx 9.0c and get the same result.

I've run a driver cleaner program and cleaned out the registry. I even tried... Read more

Prior to trying to install the graphics drivers, you did install all the mobo chipset drivers didn`t you?

If not, I suggest you do so.

hi, i just joined and this is my first post.

anyways, my computer is the HP Pavilion a6077c.

heres the specifications:

Driver update file:
196.21_desktop_win7_winvista_32bit_english_whql.exe

anyways, every time when i try to the latest Nvidia driver, whose file name is mentioned above, i immediately get the black screen and/or the monitor itself just closes in the middle of the install. surprisingly, if i hook up another monitor, the second monitor will work while the first one will stay black/closed, however the furthest it goes is to the desktop, which has no icon, no taskbar, only wallpaper shows, also right-clicking works but none of the options appeared in the right-click menu works.

after that, no matter how many time i reboot the computer, it stays the same although safe mode works flawlessly. i haven't tried uninstalling the driver in safe mode after it started black screening me since i didnt thought of it at the time and this is my 4th reformat. from last reformat, even though the driver provided by Nividia causes the black screen problems, the one provided by HP didnt cause any problem. and sicne the last few black screen problem and reformat, my computer stopped showing the HP's splash screen when turning on, it just stays black until to the login/welcome screen.

i also did some googling around, as far as i know, there isnt any solid fixes or wor... Read more

Friday April 27 I kept on hearing the Windows XP opening fanfare interwoven with my nightmares. At 9 AM I discovered that Windows had been stopping and restarting since 4 AM. The blue stop screen said:
Technical information:
***STOP: 0x0000008e (0xC0000005, 0xFAF3339E, 0xF9B2BAB4, 0x00000000)
I was only able to break the cycle by starting in safe mode, unistalling McAfee, restarting in normal mode with no protection, and downloading McAfee again from the web site. After that I thought I had the problem whipped, until next Friday morning when it started again at 4 AM.

Now I know that it starts when McAfee scans my computer for viruses, whether automatically or because I manually called for a scan.

I got help from McAfee's online chat technical support people. First they sent me MCPR.exe to do a better removal job than the Windows removal service. I ran this iteratively until after the run it had found nothing to remove. Also I removed all TEMP files, .TMP files, and Temporary Internet Files. I ran the McAfee Free Scan and it found nothing.

Usually after an error stop and restart Windows scans the directory structure of the disk. Almost always it names a McAfee file, says that the first allocation unit is not valid, and truncates the entry. Then there are lost chains that it converts into a file with a name Windows invents, FILE0000.CHK. One such file in \Windows\Prefetch was MCVSSHLD.EVE-1E6C14B0.pf and another was MCUIMGR.EXE-0E667E1B.pf. I saved the first f... Read more

Hello to everyone

My Operating System Crashes [Blue Screen of Death] after the Windows Intro Splash screen.

My Laptop Specs:
Model: Asus A8js
Video Card: NVIDIA 7700 GeForce Go 512mb
Processor: Intel Core2 Duo T7400
RAM: 2gb

Operating System: Windows XP/ Windows 7

I've recently installed my Operating System from Windows XP SP2 to Windows 7.

At first run everything seemed to be working well. But, after installing the NVIDIA driver downloaded straight from the NVIDIA website [179.48_notebook_vista32 *which was directed to me after choosing NVIDIA 7700 GeForce Go on the selection*] the computer crashes.

This is the Blue Screen of Death that happens right after the Windows 7 Splash Screen [Intro]

I also tried to reinstall back to Windows XP hoping for the problem would not be there.
But, I've discovered there are abnormal blue lines on the splash screen.

Blue Screen of death does not occur rather it displays blank screen.

Whenever I restart this is the view on the boot-up screen:

I've deduced that:
Crashing/ Blue Screen of Death only occurs when I install the NVIDIA Driver.
But, you can still be able to navigate in windows without any problem not until you install the NVIDIA driver.

The interface in the operating system is normal and functions well. But, available resolutions is only in 1024x768 [NVIDIA Driver not yet installed][Display Adaptor: Strandard VGA Display Adaptor] *Installing the driver would crash the system upon restartin... Read more

Did a clean/fresh install of W10 thinking it will solve all the issues I was having with it previously. Boy was I wrong!
As soon as I install Nvidia drivers, I get constant mouse/screen freeze for about 1-5 seconds constantly and randomly. This problem goes away when I uninstall the Nvidia drivers.

Have tried many different Nvidia drivers, always same thing happens. I use DDU in safe mode to clean all Nvidia drivers, to no success.

Anyone else experience this, anyone able to help me fix it. Thanks.

EDIT:

Think I may have fixed it. Installed latest, chipset and mouse drivers.

When I go to the Windows 10 update/restart menu the part that allows you to set a certain time to update/restart does not show for me. I've been to all the links that tell you how to do it but That section does't show up. I see the drop down box that says 'Notify to schedule restart" but I don't see the time slots to put in for the restart to happen.

Murphy's Law - my wife & I had just spent an hour or so checking out some Black Friday TV bargains & comparing three possible items. Just about to go ahead, clicked on 'Add to Basket' and the screen went black for several seconds. Then up came what appeared to be the usual MS message about installing a WU - don't touch the keyboard or words to that effect.

Made a coffee, looked at some TV and about an hour later when I looked again, my MS account sign-in screen (stage 2 - password) was showing. I thought it was the main WU Cumulative that failed earlier in the week but it wasn't. When I checked Update History there was nothing new added, my failed update was still showing and a check for updates brought up 'Up to Date.

Where can I look for details of this event please?

PS My first paragraph was for effect - I would have been in the deep doobies (a technical term) if the intrusion had caused my wife to lose the bargain - there were only two available. Fortunately there was one left when we got through again.

I just rebuilt my game pc and ever since I installed windows 7 64bit anytime I hit restart it says windows is shutting down, the screen goes black and stays black. I have to press the power button to force a shut down and then restart it. BUT, if I shut down windows with the shut down button the pc powers off normally and hitting the power button makes it boot just fine. So everything works perfect, except when I try to use the restart button on windows it hangs after it says shutting down windows.

I have every update available from windows update installed already, disc has service pack 1 on it already.

I am running windows 7 64 bit pro installed. (I did a clean install, no upgrades)

My hardware in it is...... (everything has the current drivers installed)

Gigabyte z170xp-sli motherboard that has the current bios installed.

Intel core i7 6700k 4.0ghz cpu.

Crucial mx300 SSD hard drive.

Evga gtx 1070 video card.

Sound blaster z sound card.

16gb corsair ddr4 ram.

Corsair 650 watt PSU.

27 inch samsung monitor connected via hdmi.

Hey guys, the title actually says it all. I installed the nvidia geforce 310m driver and everytime its enabled and I try to switch the notebook on theres only a black screen...

Ive looked for solutions but most of them are for computers where you can easily take graphics cards in and out, but I can't do that because im a newbie, i dont wanna open the laptop because I might mess something up

Please help!

Also sometimes it does work, but when the Nvidia driver IS enabled it goes laggy and i got this "MEMORY_MANAGEMENT" blue screen of death, help please!

Answer:Black screen after installing Nvidia GeForce 310M driver on my MSI CX623 notebook

Could be an unsupported driver. Uninstall the drivers and try using the version available from the laptop manufacturers website.

I have to update my Vaio Update software (version 3) to version 4. The instructions on the Sony website say:

1. Download the file to a temporary or download directory (Please note this directory for reference later).
2. Uninstall the existing VAIO Update and restart the unit.
3. After the unit has restarted, please go to the directory where the file was downloaded and double-click EP0000162589.exe.
4. Follow the instructions displayed in the installation wizard.
5. After installation is completed, please restart the computer.

All is clear to me, except that I don't know whether "unit" is another word for "computer", or something different altogether...? If they mean the same thing, then the same word should be used. Anyway, I don't know whether I have to reboot my computer after removing Vaio Update 3 or whether I can install version 4 directly after removing version 3. Sorry if this sounds silly.

Answer:Solved: Restart the unit=restart the computer? Didn't understand Vaio Update instruct

ok download the file to for example my docs next uninstall version3 and restart your comp next get the file from my docs double click the exe follow the wizard instructions when finished restart again hope this helps

Hi All,

I have read many, many other threads that address infinite reboot loops, but none of the solutions have resolved my issue. I am hoping the community might be able to help me identify this problem.

I have just recently replaced my CPU and MB with the items listed below. After installing hardware, I ran KillDisk on the HDD, which will zero out the entire drive. The computer boots normally and will load into windows installation without issue. However, once Windows reboots to start windows for the first time, it is unable to do so. The load windows logo screen will load, and approximately right before Windows would normally load my screen goes black, the system turns off, sits off for about 1-2 seconds, and then turns itself back on and repeats this boot process. It turns off and restarts at the same time every time.

Steps I have done so far in an attempt to resolve the issue but failed with no change in the rebooting behavior:

1) removed all non-essential hardware (CPU, 1 stick of RAM, DVD drive, and Video card were the only things left), and tried reinstalling windows.

2) Swapping out one of the 2 RAM sticks I have to make sure it wasn't defective.

3) Trying to install Windows on a new harddrive to rule out that the HDD was defective.

4) trying to boot from the CD (After the initial install had partially finished) to see if HDD was related in anyway.

5) Installed a very simple DVI video card to see if ATI card may be the cause.

6) Resetting CMOS and rein... Read more

Answer:One initial Install Restart, Windows gets stuck in a restart loop

Sorry you are having these problems. You have already done the most logical things. If it's not the memory, or the video card, or the hard drive, and the only things you have changed are the cpu and mobo, then you might wonder if there is a problem with one of the two. You could always boot a live CD of Ubuntu to see how your computer responds. Or XP installation sounds like a great idea for a test.

So my computer had been running fine until I got a BSOD (Windows 10) with 'attempted to write to read only memory' message. After the computer restarted, my monitor was suddenly no longer getting a signal.
I hadn't touched any of the hardware and the computer was working fine before so I'm really unsure as to what the problem is

Answer:Monitor showing no signal after PC restart (BSOD)

First step: Turn everything off and unplug the lot. Plug into the mains again, after a couple of minutes, and reboot the whole system.
While this will not a cure something serious that has gone wrong, it sometimes solves the problem and costs nothing but time!

I am having an issue with a Seagate external USB hard drive that I have connected to my Windows 7 PC. It is powered on when I start my computer. When I go to "my computer" to look for the drive, it is not there. I disconnect power to the drive and hear the Windows hardware disconnect sound, leading me to believe that Windows did acknowledge that is was indeed connected. I plug the hard drive back in and suddenly the drive shows up and all is well. Why is this happening and what can I do to make it work normally?

I'll also add that when I start my computer with the drive turned off, when I do power up the drive...nothing. It only seems to work when the drive is on when Windows is started. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Kevin

Built my own PC almost 2 years ago and has been down since around Christmas with the same issue. Every time I install Nvidia drivers for my graphics card and it either reboots during install or it will get stuck in the restart loop after I reboot to complete installation. I thought it was my Graphics Card so I sent it in to be replaced came back with same issue, Thought it was the hard drive so I replaced it but no luck having same issues. I have been messing with this for almost 6 months and would just like my PC back. If someone could help I would be forever grateful. attached file to help with trouble shooting.

Tried to boot from win7 usb, same message. Also in bios i don't have the option to disable secure boot, the only option is uefi (greyed out). Help needed .

I presume the HDD is somehow not visible for your system.
When you enter BIOS is HDD listed and detected properly?
Try to set BIOS to default settings and check it again.

NOTE:
The hide inactive icons in the notification area is unchecked for all users::::::::

The best way I can describe this issue which is the first time I have ever encountered in a p.c. since 1986 is to say if you do a shut down and then boot the computer it will show only three to four icons in the notification area. However if you do a restart from the same boot that shows the limited icons, all icons show up when the p.c. comes back from the "restart" command. I have wracked my rather impressive knowlege base and the net and I am not finding any that sounds remotely similar.

You are usually always the reference material for some of the more unusual situations that have arisen in the past and i am sincerely mystified by this one so I am praying that I articulated this well enough for the situation to be understood.

Thanks so much to all for any and all help and/or guidance.
Cheers!

I've edited your post for language. Even in the form of an acronym, it's not appropriate for our family friendly site so please be more careful in the future.

As for your problem, unfortunately, I'm still not understanding it fully. Are you saying sometimes when you reboot there are only a few icons in the notification area and other times there are several? Also, I'm not sure what you mean by "limited icons".

I have an old Dell 4500s desktop PC with the following config:
CPU Type: Intel Pentium 4, 1.7 GHz
RAM: 1280 MB (256mb dell ram) + (PC3200 DDR SDRAM kingston)
Video Adapter Intel(R) 82845G/GL Graphics Controller

I am having a frequent restart whenever I open a video file.
When I play a movie using window media player , VLC and others , it became black screen for 2 second then resizes the monitor resolution to 640480 and displays everything in 4 colors 16 bit.

My problem started on a day where I frequently open a .mkv file video file before the ffdshow being load up.Upon that ialmrnt5 display error everything turn into 640480 resolution and 16 bit and since then it shows frequently the ialmrnt5 display error whenever I open .avi some stream .wmv video file and even full screen games. It only happen when I open a video files and high resolution game.

I had try and reinstall the ffdcode and install dell driver from the provided dell cd an old driver but didn't help a bit.
I did not try the new dell intel GMA driver because I scare it'll cause more problem.
The weird thing where at dell driver website , they have 4 types of video adapter driver where my dell cd only have one driver 'Intel(R) 82845G/GL'

THe hard drive lights solildy for a while then goes out and a clicking can be heard.I have tested all the hardware/ memory/ processors everything passes. If i press the power button and hold the PC turns off and when power button pressed again reboots no problem.I know I should just never use restart just the turn off button, but I would like to make my PC better.I did a windows scan and it asked for them to be replaced but I have a recovery drive not a CD and there was no option to point it to there. Although it did sat it could be because it was a different type of windows.I have Win XP Media Centre.I have searched everywhere and it appears I am the only one with this issueHopefully somebody knows.

I've been noticing it for a little while now, but wasn't always sure it was a problem.  Sometimes, I'd be gone for a few days and come home and notice my computer was off or had restarted.  As this sometimes happens at work with software updates, I didn't pay it much attention.  However, there have been a couple of times where I'd be asleep and wake to a bright light and notice my computer restarted itself, after being in sleep mode for a few hours.Earlier this evening, I woke my computer up to look up an address, and while writing something down, my computer monitor went black, then bluescreened, then restarted.  At that point I came here and went through the beginning processes located here: http://www.computerhope.com/forum/index.php/topic,46313.0.htmlNow the end of that page is a little contradictory about copy/pasting logs or attaching them, so I'm not sure what method you'd prefer.  I'm going to attach them for now.  I apologize if I misread the instructions.[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]

i keep encounter this auto restart error therefore i decided to uncheck the automatic restart checkbox in system properties to get a BSOD so that i know what happen, but even if i uncheck it, my cpu still auto restart without generating a BSOD

i also checked my windows folder but there are no \Windows\Minidump in it

Answer:Auto restart even if uncheck automatic restart

Upload Dump Files:
Please go to C:\Windows\Minidump and zip up the contents of the folder. Then upload/attach the .zip file with your next post.
Left click on the first minidump file.
Hold down the "Shift" key and left click on the last minidump file.
Right click on the blue highlighted area and select "Send to"
Select "Compressed (zipped) folder" and note where the folder is saved.
Upload that .zip file with your next post.

If you have issues with "Access Denied" errors, try copying the files to your desktop and zipping them up from there. If it still won't let you zip them up, post back for further advice.

If you don't have anything in that folder, please check in C:\Windows for a file named MEMORY.DMP. If you find it, zip it up and upload it to a free file hosting service - then post the link to it.
Then, follow the directions here to set your system for Minidumps (much smaller than the MEMORY.DMP file): Set MiniDump

So, I've been trying out Windows 7, and I've been pleasantly surprised for the most part. However, I've been getting several BSODs, including some 0x124 ones that I didn't have on this same computer using XP. The only new hardware I've installed is a hard drive. Anyways, the non-0x124 ones happen seemingly randomly, and they force the computer to reboot even though I have automatically reboot on error disabled in the system options, so I'm not sure what they are.

The 0x124 stop has only happened twice, but the other ones are more frequent. I'm looking over this thread for help with the 0x124 stops, but I would really appreciate some help with the others! Here are the only two dumps in my minidump folder, which I'm guessing are the 0x124 ones, but I'll post them anyway.

Answer:BSOD, forces restart but have auto restart off

Yes, it contains 1 STOP 0x124 error message. The only possible issue that I could see is with hamachi.sys dated Feb of 2009 and amdxdata.sys dated May of 2009. Beyond that you're stuck with the advice in the STOP 0x124 thread.

Good morning all,

Last night I was tooling around on The Elder Scrolls Online when my computer suddenly turned itself off and back on. Shrugged it off, got back in, tried to log back into the game, and shut down again. Updated vid drivers, ran registry cleaner, repaired game launcher and launched again. At launch, the comp crashed and reset again. Two more times as I tried running as admin to isolate the problem. Finally gave up on the game (figured it was due to the update) and swapped over to a different game. Upon launch of that game, the computer reset again. However this time it wouldn't even let me log into windows. Either after the password screen, or before it even gets there (but always during Windows startup) it resets.

Ran in safe mode + networking. No problems. Tried watching some you-tube videos on some repair options...computer reset again. Ran memtest86 on 4 passes. No errors. Woke up, got back on, same issues. Tried to watch videos in safe mode....and at random time it resets computer again. No other actions have been able to replicate the shut down.

The first shutdown produced an error when i restarted stating that d3dx9_42.dll was missing. I clicked OK on the screen, and it reset again.

Hey guys,
im posting on behalf of my brother who gets frustrated and just wants to give up

Basically what was happening was during game play his PC would randomly shut off. It got worse as time progressed, more fequent restarts and then not even being able to power the system up.

Now he has been getting a message after the post screen saying:
Windows did not start up please choose from a start up option (somethingto that extent) then you can choose from safe mode or regular start up.

The problem here is that you cant select anything,no keyboard response and then windows automatically tries to load (windows load screen) and then a BSOD appears very briefly and the system restarts.

Originally I thought his problem was cooling, with the random restarts. But then it started restarting after about a minute that the PC was on. So I thought a dieing PSU. But the windows restarting has got me thinking a bad hard drive or something as an extra bonus to bad power/cooling.

Hello
I've been directed here by Reid (from the HijackThis Help section.
"Hi debell,

These errors appear to be software related. My suggestion is for you to post in the Windows XP section of the forum, giving them all the detail and explanations you've given me, and let the experts there give you a hand with this."

Here are the 'event' logs. Plus some event that might shed some light on the problem.
A little while ago i had to power off. Upon restarting (after more than 2 hours) the display would 'disappear' while still in the boot-up process. I shut down with the 'power' button on the PC & restarted in Safe mode. That worked. But again a 're-start' from there would go through the whole process but before the 'windows is starting' screen the display disappeared. In fact the monitor seemed to be dis-connected from the source - it has power-supply and 'indicator showed interface with comp - then abruptly the connection itself was gone. Finally after few more tries with the same results, i Chose 'Enable VGA mode' from the startup options screen (where Safe Mode etc are offered as options) That worked. I saw your mail & replying accordingly.
Thanks very much.

I don't think those a really errors, only warnings. Windows is just telling you about all the things that can't be started in safe-mode. I'm 50% sure that if you boot into safe-mode on any computer you'll see a whole bunch of those warnings in the event viewer.

ok, follow these easy steps to make aero work on your fx5200-based system

the wddm1.0 driver that DOES work with this card is the last forceware release that included the FX series, wich is the 96.85 release.

you can do a google search for it or download it from here:
FX 5200 Vista Driver - Software Driver Download

after installing this driver you will not see any new effects, so just go to the
"theme" settings and change the theme to any theme with 'aero' effects (I chose 'Architecture', you can choose another one), and VOILA!!, aero comes to win7 with your FX5200 card.

CHEERS!

My PC: ASUS A8N-SLI Premium, AMD 3800+ 64X2, 2 Nvidia 7800 GT SLI.
Here's the thing... I built it with 64 bit XP PRO on a striped pair of WD 250G SATAII drives using the onboard NVIDIA RAID controller. This works well, but a lot of games (lot'a everything) doesn't like 64 bit XP... so
I created a second Primary partition and installed 32 bit XP Pro. Install went OK, and I tried a couple versions of 32 bit NVIDIA RAID drivers (6.66, 6.70) but after an apparently normal install, 32bit XP won't boot. I get Windows logo and progress bar for aboth 20 seconds, then a blue screen for about 1/10000 of a second (to fast to read or anything) then a hardware restart. No boot option (safe, command line) works better, and logged boot will not produce a log file. Boot Manager works ok and 64bit XP still works fine. Since I can't even get a boot log I assume the OS has a problem working with the RAID. I have removed all cards but 1 vidio card, but no help. I am guessing the OS does not recognize the RAID and load the RAID driver.

I am using original BIOS, which I assume includes RAID controler code. At boot up NVIDIA RAID says it's version 4.81. I don't know BIOS version since it either does not show or flys past too fast during boot. I know that a BIOS update is a reasonable thing to try, but... the mechanics get sticky. ASUS web site has a bunch of BIOS update instructions which seem to talk about every MOBO but the A8N. The ASUS upda... Read more

"A double click on Super Fast Shutdown and Windows closes in a fraction of a second.
With the freeware SuperFast Shutdown you can close or restart Windows 2000 or XP within a fraction of a second. Make sure you close all documents before using the SuperFast Shutdown tool, otherwise you run the risk of loosing your data. The free tool takes no consideration of running programs and will not ask if you want to continue or not!
Superfast Shutdown is extremely powerful! Use at your own risk! Although it has never been reported, regular usage could possibly cause disk corruption." SuperFast Shutdown - Freeware - EN - Download.CHIP.eu
From program's home page: SuperFast Shutdown Gone Forever
Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7
Supports 32 and 64 bit versions.

Answer:SuperFast Shutdown makes Windows shutdown and restart instantly

I'd probably avoid such fast shutdowns:

To REALLY reduce your shutdown time. Start Regedit. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE / SYSTEM / CurrentControlSet / Control. Click on the “Control” Folder. Select “WaitToKillServiceTimeout” Right click on it and select Modify. The default value is 20000. Setting it to a lower 4 digit value, (say 5000) will make your PC shutdown faster, but you could end up losing data or cause possible disk corruption, so use this tweak judiciously. Remember, Windows does not in any case, recognize a 3-digit numeral here.

Hello

My Thinkpad Helix is now about 1 month old and is having several issues. Several of the drivers have become disfunctional and I am not capable of updating the ones where the problems exsist. They get about 3/4 of the way through the installation and then freeze. More importantly, I have a restart issue where once my computer displays the "Restarting..." screen, it just remains there until the BSOD appears displaying the error as a "driver power state failure". This is a big reason I cannot fix the drivers, because the computer wont restart or shut down properly.

I am so exhausted with trying to fix this that I have decided just to reset my computer to factory settings but alas, in the process of doing so, the computer freezes indefinitely.

HELP!

Hello allAfter a bit of advice. I have just bought a Western Digital USB2 hard drive and after installing it I reformatted it to NTFS. Unfortunately now I cannot start my computer if the drive is switched on. Alright not a huge problem as I only have to switch the drive off when fully shutting the computer down. But I hate niggles like this and would like to be able to leave it on. I think the problem is that the computer is looking at this drive first and trying to install the system from it (if that makes sense).Anyhow any help greatly appreciated.ThanksJADA

Answer:After installing USB drive I cannot restart XP

Ckeck your boot order in the bios, and make sure your boot drive is listed first, and no priority is given to external devices.

I've just finished reinstalling Windows on my laptop in order to install SP2. All went well until I installed GoBack, which I had on the machine before installing SP2. The computer wouldn't start Windows. Finally managed to restart by selecting "last known configuration that worked" after disabling GoBack from the start up splash screen. I'd like to re-enable GoBack if I could first identify the problem.Has anyone else had this problem, and got it sorted?

Answer:can't restart after installing Go Back

I suspect that windows restore is conflicting with GoBack. Disable Windows System Restore and all should be fine hopefully.click here=

Users with AMD processors that have been trying to install Windows XP Service Pack 3 might be greeted with a bluescreen error message after rebooting their computer that begins with STOP: 0?0000007E (0xC0000005 and contains the error text SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED. The computer restarts and the bluescreen error is displayed again. This is an endless cycle but thankfully though HP has found out about the cause for this problem and is presenting a solution on their website.
Service Pack 3 for Windows XP apparently copies an Intel power management driver to the computer that was not there before which is the cause for the restart bug. Things like these can happen but I?m wondering why non of the public beta testers have encountered this error before.
You can only use the following information if you use a non-Intel processor and encounter the previously mentioned restart bug after installing Windows XP Service Pack 3. I?m going to list two possible solutions, one from Microsoft and the other from HP.
HP solution for XP SP3 Restart Bug:Boot Computer in Safe Mode
Use Windows Explorer to browse to C:\Windows\System32\Drivers
Right-click intelppm.sys and rename it to XXXintelppm.syx
Restart Windows
If the computer is unable to boot into safe mode do the following:Press F8 during startup and load the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console
Type the number that corresponds to your Windows installation
Log in as an administrator
Type cd c:\windows\system32\drivers at the command p... Read more

Say you reformat your pc. As you reload the drivers, should you restart the pc each time it tells you too or just load all the drivers and then restart once?

Answer:Restart after installing drivers

It's best to restart the machine one at a time, as the driver udpates may affect other driver updates you perform.
