Thinkpad T430 Detection error on bootup?

Question: Thinkpad T430 Detection error on bootup?

Recently I was in the middle of using my laptop when it bluescreened and crashed. Now I'm not proud of this, but for some reason this is not an uncommon sight; I bought this off of eBay a couple months ago and it worked fine for a few days before randomly bluescreening often. Now I tried to change and install all the eight drivers, and while that solved most issues for awhile. But then I received a detection error 2100 main hdd0 on startup. Now I actually fixed it that time, and none of my files seemed to be damaged, which is strange given the nature of the error but I didn't question it. Now however the error is back seemingly inspired and I can't seen to get my laptop to simply boot. I ran the memory test and it passed and I don't even have an ssd so I don't know what the issue is or why it was fixed last time (I changed the SATA to compatability and then back to ahci and reset it). I think it might have to do with a faulty or corroded contact but I have not opened it to check. If it's anything like last time, I'm willing to bet that there is actually nothing wrong with my drive but something is again causing it not to be detected. I do have photos if that will help, but they need to be compressed so for now I hope this will be enough.

Preferred Solution: Thinkpad T430 Detection error on bootup?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I've had my T430 for about a year, and other than two Corsair RAM sticks failing my computer has been running smoothly. Last night, my computer suddenly froze up and now it won't recognize my SSD. I'm currently using my stock HDD, but now I can't access any of the data on my SSD. I've tried running the SSD firmware update from the Lenovo site, but it wouldn't show my SSD under the memory devices (I'm not sure if this particular SSD is supported by the firmware update either). I don't think lenovo customer support would help in this situation, since my stock HDD runs fine and I didn't buy the SSD from them, so any help would be appreciated.

I have the same problem that I ran into for no reason.  Does anyone have a solution for this?  Luckily I was able to login to safemode once and did my data back up after I could not login to safe mode.  The moment I connect to net work this problem happens.  On a side note I bought this T430S on ebay 3 months back with 16GB Memory, 500GB SSD which was running pretty good.

I got this error out of the blue the other day on startup, and now I get it every time I restart.  I have tried a number of solutions that I found in these forums (which I'll outline below) but it seems like my system just can't find the drive anymore.  Here's what I've done: 1. ran the ExpressCache program via Command Prompt (eccmd.exe -info) and got this error:  "**ERROR** ECCmd Request device is not available"2. unistalled the ExpressCache software, shut down, pulled the battery opened up the memory module slot cover, removed the mSATA drive and then re mounted it.3.  reinstalled ExpressCache4.  I'm trying to reformat the drive, but I am receiving similar errors     a.  When I try to format the drive (eccmd.exe -format) I get the following error:  HFS Volume is not mounted  **ERROR**  ECCmd Requested device is not available     b.  When I try to create a partition (eccmd.exe -partition) I get the following error:  0x10df (4319).  I looked this up and maybe there are system files missing? I have also tried this but it then says "There is NO mSATA detected, please check mSATA attached" http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/research/hints-or-tips/detail.page?DocID=HT073737 If anyone has any advice, please let me know.

Answer:2101 detection on HDD2 (mini sata) error on my T430

Hello and welcome,

None of the symptoms you describe sound to me like software issues. There is something wrong with the mSATA SSD, or the controller that accesses it - or it needs to be re-inserted in its socket.

Is this machine under warranty?  I'd suggest calling support and running this by them.  They may suggest re-seating the device in its socket, or may offer replacement or some other option.  I don't speak for Lenovo, just offering my personal suggestion.

My laptop is T430 of Lenovo. I have two drives installed on my computer, one is SSD (128 G, PLEXTOR), another is HDD (500 G, Samsung). Now I have encountered a serious issue that I could not find the HDD in my Windows 10. Almost two weeks ago, I found my laptop crash frequently. I think there is an extreme incompatibility between the Windows 10 and SSD. I even reinstalled my OS for several times. But it still crashed. Even I opened a simple word file, it does not respond. Two days ago, the issue got even more serious. When I boot my system, I found a problem with "2100: Detection error on HDD0 (Main HDD)". It suggests me to press the "ESC" button to enter into the OS. However, I could not find my HDD on my computer anymore. I have some paramount important data and files in this drive.  Could some friends provide some meaningful suggestions of recovering data and files for me, please?  I'm very anxious. Thank you very much!

Hello! First post on this forum but been browsing for some time. My machine: ThinkPad S430, type-model: 3364-5HG, Win 7 x64, 500 GB HGST HDD. My problem is notably similiar to this one: https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/ht082504.The problem occurs on very irregular basis, at times a couple of times a day but other times it goes weeks between the interrupts. It starts with some sort of short mechanical sound from the HDD, similar to the one when you turn the laptop of by pressing and holding the power button (only do this if I absolutely have to, it feels like choking someone with a pillow). After the sound, the screen freezes for a couple of seconds before the short bluescreen mentioned in the link occurs. The rest is as follows by the link above. Basically the only difference is the HDD brand (HGST in my S430 and Samsung in the link). After reboot (with power button during the automated reboot after bluescreen when the error code occurs), the laptop works fine.  It's getting quite annoying when this happens and also the suspension of not knowing when it will happen next is not good for my heart. What to do? Thanks in advance! Regards,Nicholas

Model: T450sEquiped as:Intel i54+4GB RAM256GB SSD (M.2) Configured as boot disk running Win 7 x64500GB HDD as additional storage Issue:Seemingly at random, approx once every one to two weeks while PC is on and at the desktop but not actively being used (meaning no user is sitting in front of it performing tasks) it will error and crash.  The error is a black screen with the following error: 2101: Detection error on SSD1 (M.2) Press Esc to continue. According to the user Esc does nothing and the only escape is to long press the physical power button until a power down occurs.  On reboot the system comes up without issue.  No user has actually seen the crash take place.   MY QUESTION(S):1st.  Is this most likely an issue with the T450s not being able to reliably boot from the m.2 slot or is this more likely an issue with the SSD installed in the m.2 slot?2nd.  Is this something altogether different?  Any (knowledgeable) advice or info appreciated.

Answer:T450s Thinkpad - ERROR 2101: Detection error on SSD1 (M.2)

It is hard to diagnose without seeing it, but my experience has been that the Gen4 and later CPUs (like yours) support a very low power state that is incompatible with some devices. (that would make it a problem with the card) Make sure you have the latest BIOS and power manager software installed. Look in the device manager and find the M.2 SSD. There should be a power management tab. Turn off the option to allow the system shut the device off to save energy.

Good morning! I bought some Lenovo T430 laptops to my company. I do this very often, and I usually put in a boot CD and install our company image on them. This always worked. However, with the last laptops I can't do it, since it appears as they're turned off (Driver appears on Windows, however doesn't read any CD/DVD). The driver doesn't even eject when I press the button. After a lot of checking, I managed to do one of them read the CD (No idea of how), which I presume it's not a hardware error on the machines. I noticed one of them appeared as "Drive Turned off", a common error in the forum. However, since my problem is with the drive before Windows boot, I'm not sure if the power manager can fix it. Is there something that could be done?

Hi, Recently bought a T430 (Without Optimus). All's good except the Laptop Temp. The left Palm rest seems to get un usually warm, no matter what OS I am on. Its a dual boot by the way, Win 7 + Ubuntu 12.04.2. With Ubuntu or CentOS or Scientific Linux, the laptop gets unusually warm...The temp monitoring utility (lm_sensors) says that its at about 45 C. I get the same temp reading on Win 7 too, but somehow, the laptop just feels more warm with Linux than Win 7.As of right now, I am on Win 7 (for past 4-5) hours.....did some browsing, MS Sec Essentials did a full disk scan, I saw some youtube vids and was toying with some Perl Scripts, and the temp is at 45C, and the left palm rest is quite warm. Its warm enough that I have to stop typing every few minutes  Has anyone else noticed this issue? Is there a work around to this issue? Is there something I should worry about ? Please let me know. I installed the new updates a month ago. This problem though, has been there since a while. I searched the forum and found that another user who had a similar issue was told to upgrade the BIOS from 1.6 something to 2.50. I am running at 2.52 as shown below. BIOS VendorLENOVOReleaseDate02-14-2013BIOSG1ET92WW (2.52 )SMBIOS VersionLENOVO - 2520Video cardIntel(R) HD Graphics 4000 Card memory2,112.00 MBProviderIntel CorporationCard version9.17.10.2843 08-21-2012Sound cardRealtek High Definition Audio Driver providerRealtekDriver version6.0.1.6710... Answer:Thinkpad T430 gets significantly warm on Win 7 as well as Linux. How about a fellow T430 user ?

In my experience, Linux isn't as good with power management as Windows. 45 degrees sounds about right for a current-gen Intel processor due to Turbo Boost causing temperature spikes as you use your system normally. As for the warm left palmrest, the hard drive sits under there, so maybe the drive just tends to produce more heat. Assuming you have a conventional hard drive, give it a defrag to reduce operating stress (and hence power consumption and heat output).

Hi, I bought my P50 like 4 months back and suddenly it has started to throw this error when the machine is starting up."2100: Detection error on SSD1 (M.2)". I have run the tests in BIOS mode and all the tests got passed. I have faced the error 2 times now and after keeping the machine down for few minutes and switching back on resolved the issue. But I can't be sure it will solve the issue next time.Just bit of a background to the error. I have started my machine this morning, and from Windows login screen machine sudddenly restarted saying "DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION". And on the restart I got the error. I do have a feeling that this not related to actual hardware, but firmware etc.  Any ideas would be highly appreciated. Thanks.Jaliya

Hi there, After about month of use I suddenly got an error: "2101: Drive detection error on hdd2 (mini sata)". Simply while browsing the internet system hung up and after reboot the error appeared.I've read that people here had same error just after mounting their SSD's - mine worked fine for few weeks. The problem appeared short time after auto-updating BIOS but not just after flash. 2 or 3 restarts gone smoothly.Strange is that now my BIOS version is still 1.16 when on the web since last Wednesday hangs ver. 1.17 - the update went on Saturday.Any ideas how to avoid sending anything (Laptop and SSD) to RMA? I have already RMA ticket from OCZ but want to save some time and don't want to lose the data.Besides I'm not sure if it isn't issue of the new BIOS from Lenovo. Thanks in advance for any help.Gootchio

Hello gootchio,
Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.

You should try and reseat the drive the computer is not detecting.  This should reset the code and hopefully correct the problem.

I have a Thinkpad Yoga which today was turned on while I was away (i.e. computer was not in use). When returning back the screen said "2100: Detection error on HDD0 (Main HDD)". Windows must have crashed (probably just another one of those faulty Lenovo drivers) and then the system couldn't boot up.
Everything seems alright after a hard reboot but I'm afraid my SSD drive has gone bad.

Found a support document of the error on Thinkpads with Samsung SSD, but mine have a LiteOn. Can anyone help me find out why this happened and if anything is wrong with my SSD?

I have the same problem on a Lenovo Thinkpad, it does it once a day One way to fix it: Once it boot up wrong, press esc and the in the menu select the "Lenovo diagnosis" or something like this, once you see your 2 drives, you can reboot and it will work. When I launched a usb key while having the 2100 error, only the liteon ssd was detected... Might be a Hard Drive problem? (my thinkpad is only 3 months old) I tried updating my Bios, and I reinstalled windows. No differrences, still having a bug once every 2 or 3 reboot I'm trying to fix it soon and if no way, i'm going to make the warranty work(Sorry for my english, not my native language)

After about 18 months of use, I am repeadedly receiving the following errors on my Thinkpad Twist S230U (Model #3347CTO): 2100: Detection error on HDD0 (Main HDD)Press Esc to continue. (On Startup) or   Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart. We're just collecting some error info, and then we'll restart for you. (0% complete)If you'd like to know more you can search online later for this error: CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED (Windows 8 BSOD when I am in Windows) I am periodically able to login, so on my last login I did a complete refresh ran all the disk utility options, and did a complete refresh.  I just finished installing the 150 or so updates, did another run through the disk utility applications, and it is still doing it.   Any thoughts? I'm worried that it will get to the point where it won't startup again (and it is a huge pain when I am working and it goes BSOD on me).  There was nothing installed or any physical shock to the machine that would have led to this happening when it did.

Hi there guys! First of all, it's my first time to post something here. Just recently purchased a Thinkpad Twist. However, after a few days, all of a sudden, I always get the error 2100: Detection Error on HDD0 (Main HD). I'm not sure what exactly is the problem though because after a few minutes, when I restart, it'll load Windows 8 back and eventually after a few browsing and use of computer, will force restart stating there's a problem encountered, etc. Once it restarts, it gives the same 2100 error again. Please help me guys as I'm really frustrated. I can't seem to use the computer normally without force restart due to error and loading windows 8 thereafter due to 2100 error.

Hi Lenovo Community,  around April/May I bought a T470 and since then my Notebook is crashing from time to time out of nothing with the apparently famous "2100: Detection error on HDD0 (Main HDD)" error.First this error screen shows up:     First error messageAnd it is shortly followed up by this one:Second error messageBefore starting this thread I had a look into the community and the older posts. This seems to be a problem which comes up often with all kind of Lenovo Notebooks (ThinkPads and also IdeaPads) however there was no thread for the T470 model yet and the suggested solutions (mostly only to update the drivers) didn't really solve my problem...!All my drivers are regularly updated via Lenovo Companion and yet the problem still comes out of nothing...Does anyone have an idea?Thank you.Best Regards,GT500M

After a windows update, the laptop started giving me this error. I attempted the quick fixes, such as going into diagnostic, the HDD isn't present there either. I've reseated the HDD, nothing is working. I believe this could be a chipset/IRST mismatch issue, I just need to know what to get and a suggestion on how to get it installed.  Ok yes it's an old laptop but I need to get it going even if only long enough to back up my data. I am desperate please any solution is a godsend at this point.

Hello everyone,
One fine evening while watching a movie, my laptop stopped responding and in frustration I switched off the laptop by holding the power button long enough to turn off. Next Morning it showed a blue screen and a message to recover my windows, which I failed to do and by the afternoon this message showed up. Detection Error on HDD0 (main HDD) and hence forth I've been unable to install windows from a USB drive since ( and I suppose) it is not able to read my HDD. I do not care about my data at all, I just want my laptop up and running. If I can have the data back it will be perfect otherwise I don't mind not getting my data back. I know for a fact that my Hard disk is fine because I went into command prompt, diskpart , and list disk, and saw the status of HDD as healthy, this is after the error (detection error on HDD). SO my question is: Why this error? IS there a problem in the motherboard? Why the error shows once and then doesn't show the next time and then comes up again.

Answer:2100: Detection Error on HDD0 (Main HDD); Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga

The error might be bad sectors, but I'm not sure. if my guessing is correct, you might have to get a new drive to replace. also you need to reinstall OS

When I dock the computer and press the power button on the dock it doesn't recognize my monitor as the main screen. I have to hit a key (Windows 10) and put in my password hoping that it's doing that and then the screen comes up. If I reboot after that ... THEN.... it recognizes my screen as the main monitor. How do I fix this? The only time this happens is when I use it off the dock and then put it back on. If it stays on the dock all the time it does just fine. Any fixes for this? Thanks...

As per the query we understood that you are looking for Palmrest part for your ThinkPad T430s.

It is not possible to replace the T430 palmrest to T430s, and for palmrest part number with and without finger print reader is 04W3495 - Keyboard Bezel ASM FPR, 04W3496 - Keyboard Bezel ASM no-FPR.

I try to use my T430 minidisplayport to connect with external display. But it is so unstable that the connection between laptop and display can lost anytime. That is so annoying. I use Nvidia control panel in Windows to force use NVS5400M instead of HD4000, but it seems doesn't change anything. I heard if I select the discrete graphic card in BIOS, then it may fix the display connection lost problem. Then I go to the BIOS and  set the "discrete", and disable "OS Detection for NVIDIA OPtimus" in BIOS Config Display (This is necessary otherwise the laptop will change it back to Optimus automatically.). But after I log into Windows, then no graphic card can be found, Why? How should I fix this problem? The external display issue in T430 is so annoying. The VGA suffers very serious noise while the minidisplay is so unstable. Even worse, there is no any lenovo staff stand out to help !!!!!!!!!!!!!!  If anyone has experience, please share that. Thank so much.

buddha1987,

Sorry to hear this has been a bit of a hassle for you.

Can we go over the basics?  Apologies if you have already been over all this and have elected to simply start a new thread, but we should cover this to help others who may have suggestions...

1) What version of Windows are you running?

2) Have you updated to the latest BIOS and video drivers?   I would recommend running system update if you haven't already, to get these.

3) What display model are you connecting to via DP?  Have you tried a different DP cable, or to connect to other displays?

Edit - it seems you are already getting help in this thread -> http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/W-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/W530-Mini-DisplayPort-to-HDMI-TV-Issue/td-p/1...

Please try to keep the conversation in one place rather than starting multiple related topics.  Thanks!

I currently have two IDE harddrives in my machine. However the second smaller one is failing so i brought myself a nice shiny 500gb SATA drive. However, if i plug in all the cables into the Sata Drive and then plug the other end into the Motherboard and PSU. When i turn the machine on it won't boot up. I get past the BIOS (Which has detected the new addition) and then the point where it should display the windows loading, i just get a blank screen.

If i switch the computer off and boot up again, i get the message saying "Windows did not boot up correctly" and if i pick safe mode or normal boot up, i still get the blank screen..

If i upplug the hard drive, i get normal operating computer.

Any ideas?

Answer:New Sata Drive detection and Windows Bootup

Yup, boot into Safe Mode, and download and install the SATA/RAID drivers for your particular board. Then, restart, and you should be fine.

You could do the same by unplugging the new HDD, and booting up normally, if you're not getting internet access with Safe Mode.

Question: ThinkPad T430

Hello all., just new to this forum. I have just ordered a T430 to replace my existing L412. The blurb from the supplier is: Lenovo T430 i5-3320M /4Gb/320-7/HD+/GC/MB/Wi/B/F/C/W7P-64, Mfr. Part Number: N1XG4UK. Just wondering what my upgrade options are : ) It comes with 1 x 4GB SODIMM, which I assume occupies the slot under the keyboard rather than the slot accessed via the back so would be feasible to install a 4 or 8GB module from Crucial to bring the memory to 8/12GB. Hard drive is just a 320-GB, so would like to speed up the system with a SSD driver of around 256GB, any suggestions? does the laptop take mSATA SSD and what are the options? It also states that it has an Enhanced Ultrabay not sure what this is and what the options are? I see the documentation states: The computer comes with either a PCI Express Mini Card for wireless WAN or an mSATA solid-state drive? Specification sheet below if it helps? Wireless technology: WWAN; PAN; LANInterface type: Communication Daughter Card (CDC); Mini-PCIeAntenna: Ultra Connect; UltraConnect IINumber of slots: 1 Smart Card + Express Card, 1 SIM Full Total=1, 1 Mini-PCIe Half, 1 Mini-PCIe Full, 1 4-in-1 Media Card Reader, 1 Express Card or Smart CardWireless transmission: Bluetooth: 1Mbps, --, 11a:54Mbps, 11b:11Mbps, 11g:54Mbps, 11n:exceeds 100Mbps Thank you for any advice in advance. Cheers, Neil.

Answer:ThinkPad T430

You should have no problem installing a second RAM module, be it 4GB or 8GB, or replace the 4GB module with a pair of 8GBs. Crucial's website will give you the specific part numbers for modules that are compatible with your T430.

While you're at the Crucial website they'll also suggest M4 model SSDs for your T430. Note that you need 7mm thick drives. The more common 9.5mm models are too thick. The T430 doesn't support mSATA SSDs.

You can replace the DVD drive with a 12.7mm Ultrabay Enhanced adapter to hold the SSD. A better approach IMO is to put the SSD in the standard drive bay in place of the 320GB HDD. Then, if you need the HDD you can put it in the Ultrabay adapter or in a separate USB connected HDD enclosure.

Has anyone found a way to successfully install intel wi-di on a t420 or t430 running windows 10? I have tried many driver combinations without success. From what I have read it seems that these machines used intel?s proprietary tech for wireless displays where the current gen is just miracast rebranded. Its seems intel is no longer developing for new operating systems for 4-year-old hardware.

Welcome to the forum.

Yes that SSD and Ultrabay adapter will work just fine.

A couple of comments.
1. While 64GB is enough for the OS and some apps it's a bit tight IMO. SSD prices have been falling. Consider a 120GB or even 240GB drive. That way you can run the T430 without the HDD in the Ultrabay if necessary. I do that when I travel so that there are no moving parts to get damaged by inadvertent shocks.
2. Another option to consider is an mSATA SSD to go into the WWAN socket. This would let you keep the existing HDD where it is and leave the Ultrabay available for the DVD or even another SSD/HDD.

Answer:ThinkPad T430 fingerprint

Hi Nkukuruzovic,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

As per the query we understood that you are facing issues with Fingerprint sensor on your ThinkPad T430.

Are you getting any LED indication on the fingerprint sensor? If yes, then try reinstalling the software from thinkvantage system update utility.

Hope this helps.

Best regards,
Hemanth Kumar

I just got a T430 from the Lenovo outlet.  The volume is not inaudible, but it's not loud enough when we are trying to watch a movie on DVD and even worse when watching a show online from a website.  We have to make sure the environment in the apartment is pretty quiet--AC is off, dishwasher is off, baby is happy, etc.  Any little extra noises make it very difficult to hear most dialogue even after using the buttons to adjust the volume to its highest.  I've been into the control panel to adjust the system volume, but this is already at its highest point when the volume buttons have been used to set the volume to its loudest setting.  It seems like there must be something else going on or there would be a lot of complaints about this computer in this regard, and I'm not finding any.  Are there some solutions for me apart from buying speakers or using headphones (because there are two people watching, not just one)?  Please "dumb down" your suggestions because I am not very tech savvy!  Thank you in advance!

Hi This issue has probably been really beaten up thoroughly, but I just thought I would summarise and and ask a few more questions just so that we can reach a conslusive answer: Well, about battery charging and discharging: The first time, once I get it from the maufacturer, I found the battery to be around 46%, and so, Charged it to 100% just to ensure it did work properly. I am told full charging each time is not only unnecessary, it is also harmful for the battery. Why? Is this true? I gueess, in modern laptops, there must be a circuit that also protects against overcharging? I am an engineering student and as such will have to use the thinkpad T430 for running some engineering software. What could be the practice I cam follow to have maximum life span for my battery? I was thinking of charging till say 90% each time, run it on battery with the AC power off and then letting it discharge till say 10% or so before charging again. I would be using up a lot of cycles then.. Or shall I just keep it plugged in most of the time, and unplug from AC power only when I need to? Will this do anything harmful to the Battery cycle? Or, since, I will have access. to AC power most of the time, and so, should I remove the battery after charging it to say 40% or so and just use AC power? So sorry for the barrage of questions. I am hearing so many things. Not sure what to do and follow. Thanks many for any help

Answer:Thinkpad T430 Battery

1) Overcharging you mentioned relating to safety is controlled by the battery controller. But the harmful effect is more related to wear and tear, which is only controlled to a certain extent, and can be managed by user and ThinkVantage Power Manager under custom charge mode. So basically the differences in how you set the battery charging threshold may mean the difference of using your battery for 2 years versus 4 years (an example). upper 90% or 95% sounds fine. Use your battery only when you think you need, everytime you use it will cause damage to it, as it is a consumable product. Battery is best stored between 40 to 60%, especially if you don't use it often. But i would use the battery once every 2 weeks, to maintain the cathode and anode, preventing them from degrading. Also, keeping the battery in the laptop also serves as UPS, and if you have 65 watts adapter, then you should have the battery plugged in, so that you can allow the CPU to operate at its maximum speed (without battery it will be throttled down).

I bought a refurbished t430 a while ago and it hasn't given me any major issues. But recently I put it to sleep and tried to power it back on and the only thing it does is light the power button for less than a second. I have a T430 with the Nvidia option, purchased last month. When doing anything intensive (playing a game, etc.) the laptop gets very hot. I've downloaded speedfan, and have seen my CPUs go over 80oC which is terrible for a laptop. Any chance Lenovo will fix this, or should I just return the laptop for a refund? I called support and was told to download updates... all drivers/bios/windows updates are at latest.Windows 7 64-bit Thanks

Answer:Thinkpad T430 heat issue

Why do you think is terrible? 80+oC on intensive tasks (CPU&GPU) doesn't look terrible to me. You're still far from the T-junction point. My T420s gets 90oC when I'm playing games but I think it's ok  as long as it doesn't throttle or shutdown (and does not burn my lap). It's a laptop after all, slim package, many watts to dissipate, especially in full load.

Hello everyoneso a week ago I install fedora 18 on my lenovo Thinkpad and if you have done it before you know  that installing a linux requires a partitioning on your HDD in fedora 18 the installation process does that automatically. So I freed up some space on my HDD and left it for fedora to use. The problem starts when fedora installation was complete. After that my windows 8 boot loader was missing that the grub (Linux boot loader) found the windows OS but when I enter windows I get this error exactly:"windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause....File: \boot\BCDStatus: 0Xc0000225Info: The boot configuration data for your PC is missing or contains errors."so windows is not loading...Base on that error I think that fedora installation edit or deleted my boot partition on my laptop. There is a recovery partition on my HDD. But I don't have any way of loading a recovery panel or system or something. But in my Linux I have access to that partition which includes these file:So this is my recovery partition on my laptop. I am running a fedora Linux on my thinkpad.I want to recover my laptop to its factory setting and partition I am hoping that this recovery partition that includes a .WIM file does that for me.so that's the problem any idea about how I can save my laptop..Please help

After only a couple of months of use, some of the keys have become really squeaky, and some feel as if the spring is broken so they produce unpleasant sound. Normally, I would not pay much attention to it, but since my work involves a lot of typing and I purposedly bought this laptop for its praised keyboard, this have become quite annoying, another disappointment . I would like to remove those keys and try to see what is causing this sound. Has anyone tried to remove the keys on the new keyboard and is it possible without causing damage to the keyboard itself? Cheers, Srdjan

Answer:Removing a key on the new thinkpad keyboard (T430)

I have the same problem with my keyboard on T530 only after a couple of months of use, and I do very little of typing. The really squeky/noisy keys are the backspace and the arrow keys at the bottom right corner. This came as a huge surprise to me as well because the Thinkpad's keyboard is specifically advertised to be "military tested".

Hi, I recently found out that I couldn't completely shut down my ThinkPad T430 as whenever I clicked 'Shut down' from 'Power', the OS would go through normal shut down procedure, and the laptop seemed to be shut down, but the fingerprint reader still flashes with an interval of about 1 sec. Hi! I've owned a ThinkPad T430 for about one year now. Originally I was fairly impressed with the battery life (around 4.5 hours) but now after owning it for a year I am very unimpressed with it's short 3 hour life now. I have read that batteries should be expected to do this, although I have friends with a MacBook Pro which has lost maybe 20% of it's charge over three years not one year like my ThinkPad! My specs are listed below: OS: Windows 8 (upgraded from 7)Ram: 8GB (4*2 DIMM - came with 4GB and I upgrade it with 4 more)CPU: i5-3210M 2.5GHZHard Drive: Samsung 840 Pro 256GB SSD (upgraded from the 320GB 7200RPM HDD before...if I have got those specs right) I recently installed the new SSD and expected to see my battery life shoot up again (hopefully at least half an hour) but I really haven't noticed any such improvement. I use the battery frequently for school and run the battery down to about 20% maybe twice a week on school weeks? Is this kind of deterioration to be expected and should I simply purchase a new battery if I need that extra 1.5 hours? According to the Windows 8 battery report the original full charge capacity was: 49,286 mWh, now it is: 39,780 mWh. Thanks!

Hello,I bought ultrabay SILVERSTONE TS09 and HDD WESTERN DIGITAL HDD Mobile WD Blue, inserted in my Lenovo ThinkPad t430 and it is not recognized / detected. I don?t see it in BIOS either. When I plug it in my second Fujitsu notebook it?s working. I am using Linux Fedora 18, does anyone have idea how to make it work on ThinkPad?

Answer:Ultrabay HDD not detected Lenovo Thinkpad t430

I believe that adapter will not work in your machine. I have never used one, but I have read that it will work in a T400, but not in a T410 or newer. I know that the adapters that Lenovo sold for the T400 will not work in a T410, but the adapters for a T410 or later will work in a T400 also. (The optical drives for all the machines are electrically interchangeable. I have always intended to take them apart to see why they work that way. I would guess that one connection is not passed through to the drive and the T410 needs it and the T400 does not. (Everywhere I said T410, I really mean T410/T420/T430/T510, etc.)

perplexing. My pristine thinkpad T430's Realtek High Def audio seems installed right, no bangs, no obvious errors, but with version1709 build 16299.64 Pro, no sound emerges from speakers. Was good before now - very good in fact.
Using the built in test facilities, nothing appears to be wrong except there is no sound at all.

if I plug the headphones in, everything's good. With the Realtek driver [last updated May of 2015, windows Catalog], plugging and unplugging headphones shows no change in the control panel or popup: that is, there is no indication of the headphones in use, even when that is the case: still shows "speakers". If I switch the audio device to the Microsoft generic HD device, it will reflect the distinction between headphones/speakers, but speakers still not producing a peep. headphones ok.

is there some other bit of driver-ware that I need to be looking at? All help greatly appreciated.

Answer:Venerable Thinkpad T430 no speakers after 1709?

This is not an unheard of event, Microsoft sometimes makes a slight improvement to windows that affects the way that a driver has to be written to operate, this is not done often as they have rules that they follow to minimise these outages,

Although the Microsoft OEM partners are kept up to date the issue arrives when the hardware manufacturer does not re-write the driver for their hardware in time for the update to windows (most are reactive not proactive).

Only thing I can suggest is that you check with the manufacturer's site to see if they have a suitable replacement driver available, it will eventually be added to the windows catalogue but this may take a while.

you may have some luck trying the Realtek site for drivers as they write the base code for laptop manufacturers to use, modified, for their hardware

Happy New Year.  I'm typing this as a means to blow off some steam and to warn anyone considering the purchase of a Lenovo product.  Yesterday I unboxed a new ThinkPad T430 (2344BMU), my second.  A year ago I purchased my first T430 (23445GU) and have been nothing but happy with it since, however, given the chance to upgrade the processor I took advantage.  The first thing I noticed when I powered up the new laptop was that the fan sounds like a small turbine when it kicks in, with a distinct whirring sound as it winds up.  This was a major surprise as the fan on my first T430 rarely ever caught my attention, and then only when really pushing the CPU.  The second thing I noticed, as the two laptops sat side-by-side, was that the screen on the new T430, despite having the same 1600x900 resolution, was noticably less vibrant than the old laptop's screen, as if there's a fine coating of dust on it.  Barely a half hour of research later I learned that Lenovo has multiple contracts for fan and screen production, with a distinct difference in quality among the manufacturers, and that it basically comes down to luck regarding screen and fan quality on any given computer sold by Lenovo.  Call me picky, but when I spend $1500 on something I expect a certain level of quality.  Here Lenovo has failed miserably.  Given that my purchase wasn't directly with Lenovo but through a third party, it seems that I've no recourse other than to grin... Hello, I've recently purchased a ThinkPad T430, and while trying to play a few of my games, I've noticed that under display drivers instead of listing "Intel HD Graphics 4000" it just lists "Standard VGA Graphics Adapter". Now, I know all about the simpler fixes with the Standard VGA problem. I've tried all of the "solutions" I could find. I've downloaded the Intel HD driver from the lenovo website under my specific laptop model(T430). I installed it, and everything seemed to work fine. I restarted my laptop, and went back to see that nothing had changed. It still listed only the Standard VGA adapter. I manually installed the Intel HD 4000 driver from the list in the Device Manager update window, and it showed that everything installed correctly. I restart the laptop, and boom. Nothing. Still lists the Standard VGA Adapter. I'm completely clueless as to what the problem may be. I've even restored my system, and uninstalled the VGA Adapter driver in hopes that it would install the correct driver after a nice restart. I've updated windows and everything. Nothing seems to work. Any input is appreciated. Thanks.  **A few notes: I'm running Windows 7 Professional - 64bit with a 256GB SanDisk SSD and 6GB of Ram. i5-3320M

Hi,In the last few months or so (possibly after I updated the BIOS), when I put my T430 into sleep mode when plugged in, it does not wake up. If it is not pluged in and I put it to sleep (in both cases by closing the lid) then it wakes up fine. When plugged in, I changed the power settings so that it will hibernate when plugged in but it takes long to do this so I prefer if the sleep mode were to work again. I'm running Windows 7 Professional. BIOS Version/Date LENOVO G1ET94WW (2.54 ), 22/04/2013Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3520M CPU @ 2.90GHz, 2901 Mhz, 2 Core(s), 4 Logical Processor(s)BIOS Version/Date LENOVO G1ET94WW (2.54 ), 22/04/2013System Model 2344CTOIntel(R) HD Graphics 4000, Driver version 9.17.10.2843Display Driver: NVIDIA NVS 5400M, Driver version 9.18.13.697Network adapter: Intel 82579LM Gigabit Network Connection, Driver version 11.15.16.0Centrino-Advanced N6205, driver version 15.4.1.1 I looked in the forums and there are similar problems but can't find a solution. Thanks, Shafiq

Answer:ThinkPad T430 - Cannot wake up from sleep if plugged in

Hi, Shafiq

I have a few questions to gain more clarification about your issue: FIrstly, does the issue arise when you attempt to wake the system from sleep while plugged in, or is it an issue where if you put it to sleep while plugged in, you will not be able to wake the machine?

Also, do you use Windows for the power settings or are you using Lenovo Power Manager?

Thanks in advance,Adam

Hello everyone, Any recommendations for the ICC profile I can use with my ThinkPad? While I managed to get rid of the blue color cast to some point using color corrections within display driver and updating the monitor driver itself, I wonder if anyone can suggest some ICC profiles? I have a basic HD display (1366x786). I am occasionally into photo and video editing and while I know this display is not perfect for such tasks, I would like to get maximum out of it. Cheers and thanks, Srdjan

Answer:Best ICC profile/display setting for ThinkPad T430

How did you get rid of the "blue cast"? I have managed to partially fix it with the Windows 7 Display Color Calibration in Control Panel by reducing the "blue cast" by 30% on the "Adjust color balance" page. But I can still never get the gamma and the contrast the way it's shown in the sample pictures.

HiI've recently bought a T430 with a Nvidia NVS 5400M, it uses optimus to switch between the intel and nvidia graphics. Now with optimus turned on and idling and power management set to energy-saving (doing nothing just leaving it at desktop mode) i get 23 watts of power usage. My X220 got 8 watts when idling. Now when i turn of optimus and the Nvidia card in the bios i get 8 watts of power usage in the same scenario (just leaving at desktop mode, set to energy saving). Is there something wrong with the optimus driver??? i don't think it's normal that a graphics card draws power when it should be turned off.Anyone?

Answer:Thinkpad T430 Optimus power usage

The nVidia card should not be drawing power when you are not using it. Please enable "Display GPU Activity Icon in Notification Area" in the nVidia control panel as shown in the top part of the attached image. Then you should have the Optimus Icon, as shown in the bottom part of the image below.

When you hover your cursor hovered over the Optimus Icon, you can see if the nVidia card is on or off. In the image you can see that my nVidia card is on because 1 program and 1 display connection was using it. While the Icon does not tell you the specific program that is using the nVidia card, keeping an eye on it will let you know if a program is using the card or not.

If you want to force a program to run on the integrated Intel card (to save battery life) or the nVidia card (for max performance) then make sure you have "Add 'Run with graphics processor' to Context Menu" enabled in the nVidia Control panel. Then you can right click on the program's icon and choose which card it should run with.

Answer:Upgrading to SSD, putting HDD in Ultrabay in Thinkpad T430

You need:
1. An SSD. On the T430 this must be a 7.0mm thick model. Otherwise any capacity or SATA interface will work.
2. An Ultrabay Adapter. You can buy the OEM version from Lenovo or a much cheaper clone from eBay. Make sure you get an adapter that's 12.7mm thick.
3. Disk cloning software. I use Acronis True Image but there are other products available that will do the job.

Procedure:
1. Install disk cloning software.
2. Replace the current HDD with the SSD and put the HDD in the Ultrabay Adpater.
3. Reboot from the HDD in the Ultrabay. You'll need to interrupt the boot using the ThinkVantage button in order to select a different boot device.
4. Run disk cloning software to copy the contents of HDD to SSD. You may want to adjust partition sizes if the SSD is larger or small than the HDD.
5. Reboot using the default boot device, i.e. the SSD in the standard drive bay.

Hi, My T430 suddenly powers off. It does not show any sort of warning, blue screen of death or anything else. It just powers off completly. And it does not turns on until the battery is removed and installed again. If it is running on AC power i.e without battery, the power cord has to be plugged out and again plugged in to make it work again. The time interval to turn off is completly random, sometimes 1 min, 1 hour, 10 sec etc. And it can happen after boot, in bios or anywhere else. I have confirmed that it is not a heating issue by running a stress test for more than an hour and it worked fine. I have also tried changing RAM, removing HDD, removing ultrabay disk drive, but doing these does not produce any difference.  I have also tried pressing the power button for 60 sec, but does not make any differnce.

Answer:ThinkPad (T430) battery compatibility issue

HelloThe batteries for T410/420 are not compatible with T430, even Lenovo genuine ones. Because of T430 features hardware authentification of the battery installed. The batteries for old laptops like T410/420 don't have such features (authentification chips inside). This chip missing causes the battery being installed in the T430 can't be charged. So, you have to purchase Lenovo original battery for T430.

UPD
Lenovo original batteries for T430 are backward compatible with T420

Hello,  we are trying to use our ThinkPad T430 to support an external microphone.  The microphone is coming in via a mixing desk.  Previously our laptops have had two input points - audio and microphone and we have connected via the microphone input. However, on this new laptop we only have one audio input option and now cannot hear any sound when we use this.  Is there another piece of kit we need (splitter?) or some changes to the settings on the laptop?  Thanks for your help.

Hello, just bought a T430 here and I'm loving it. The keyboard is comparable to any desktop and the portability and battery life fit my needs perfectly. With the old T420, you could adjust the settings so Fn + F3 would turn the screen off without putting the computer to sleep. However, with the new chicklet style keyboard (which is now 6 rows instead of 7), lenovo seems to have made Fn + F3 lock the computer. I can't seem to find any way to turn the screen off without affecting active downloads/music/etc. Any help would be appreciated.

Dear Community,I recently purchased a Thinkpad T430 with Windows7 Pro edition preinstalled.  I want to replace the installed SSD drive with a larger SSD drive (samsung 840 pro).  I have no files on the laptop yet.  After careful reading of several posts and the Thinkpad manual, I created a recovery medium (boot and data) using the Lenovo installed tools onto a 16GB USB flash drive.  I then removed the lenovo SSD drive and replaced it with the Samsung SSD drive.  I connected the flashdrive to the USB port and attempted to boot from this flash drive.  In the boot menu, both the Samsung drive and the USB drive show up, but if I select the USB drive nothing happens (the boot menu reloads).  After reading more posts, I went into the BIOS menu and tried some suggested changes but nothing seems to work.   I am an ordinary user, I am not an IT professional and embarked on this adventure thinking it should be straightforward enough.  Can someone help me please? Thanks in advance.

Answer:Thinkpad T430 Cannot Boot from Recovery disk

Hello and welcome,

Was the flash drive properly prepared before creating the recovery image?

New or used USB memory keys or USB flash drives require an active partition created from within Wind...

Sometimes a non-booting flash drive can be fixed by setting the partition active.   Use the instructions in the above link but don't clean, create, or format - or do anything that might corrupt the data.  Just select and set active.

If there's something else wrong with the drive prep (wrong format, for example), you may be able to get it working by doing the prep on a 2nd USB drive and copying the contents of the first drive.

You only get to make the recovery media once so if neither of these work you'll need to call support and request DVDs.  In a case like this where the recovery drive creation has failed they may or may not charge for the media.

Hello, I bought via my engineering school a T430 laptop without any OS installed. I'm planning to install a clean version of Windows 8, but when I went looking on Lenovo's website they only had tutorials to make the upgrade from Windows 7 to 8. So my question is: can I just install it right out of box without any problems ? PS: I'm not English, so sorry if I make some mistakes.

Answer:Thinkpad T430, Windows 8 clean install

Sure. Windows 8 will install all of the basic drivers. Thereafter you'll just install TVSU (ThinkVantageSystemUntilities) that will upgrade your drivers as required.

I got a used ThinkPad T430 a few days ago and it has been totally flawless except for this one issue. The night I got it, everything went fine. Then the next morning I went to a coffee shop near my house and it started freezing up. The freezes happen every 20 minutes or so and they last about 1 - 3 minutes. While it's happening, absolutely nothing responds. No mouse, no CTRL+ALT+DEL, no WinKey+L, nothing. Then once the freezing ends, the laptop registers all the key presses at once. At first I noticed that a couple rogue Windows processes involved with Windows Update were using 100% of my disk. I figured that was the cause of the freezing. I manually downloaded the 900MB update that was apparently stuck for some reason and installed it, and the disk usage went back to normal. Then I went back to the coffee shop the next morning and the freezing continued. I figured it had to be a disk issue regardless because it was the original hard drive with 300+ power-on days (despite the disk SMART health being seemingly fine) so I bought an SSD and replaced it. I reinstalled Windows and everything seemed a-okay. Well today I went back to the coffee shop again and used the laptop for a few hours without any problems. Then I noticed I was still on my home network, because it stretches to the coffee shop. Well, I switched to the coffee shop network and after about 10 minutes, the laptop froze once again. I think this is proof enough that the cause of the freezes are coming f... Read more

Hi all, I have just acquired a Thinkpad T430 running windows 7 professional 64bit, and recently restored to factory settings. The windows shows the drive as Windows7_OS (C 440GB and Lenovo Recovery (Q 13.6GB. I would like to resize the C: 440GB partition into C: 190GB and D: 250GB (approx), with D: for my data only. I have tried the Windows Disk Management, and shrinked the C: to 190GB. But when I tried to create simple volume on the Unallocated Space, the windows gives error and says "There is not enough space available on the disk(s) to complete this operation." I have searched online and discover that this maybe due to the 3 or 4 primary partitions limit I am having. The image shows the partition I am having now. My question is:1. What can I do in order to create the D: partition?2. My drive is shown to be Basic disk, will converting to Dynamic disk allow the above?3. Having converted to Dynamic disk, will the Recovery/Restore factory still work? Appreciate for any help.

Hi, I have a Thinkpad T430 with Windows 8.1 pro (8.1 update installed). The problem keeps bore me is the touchpad is not working properly on Win 8 gestures. For example, the finger slides in from left and right ride of the touchpad, which suppose to pop current running Win 8 apps and search & settings respectively. But when I do that, it gives me nothing. The situation is that everytime if I boot/reboot the laptop, the touchpad will work smoothly for a while. But if I hiberbate the laptop (folding the screen back down) and turn it back on the next day for a few days, the touchpad won't work on the gestures anymore. So I am wondering how to fix the issues. I have also intalled the drivers for touchpad and pointing device through ThinkVantage centre, but it did not help. cheers

Hi all, First of all I would like to take a moment and write my history with this experience. Last year I had a Dell Precision M4500 (i7-720QM and nVidia Quadro FX880M) which it had to be my eGPU machine. But using FL Studio alot, the cpu didn't kept the pace so I had to make a change. My research got to my Thinkpad T430 because Ivy Bridge platform can get you up to 90% of peak performance of your eGPU solution. When I had my Dell M4500, I have ordered the EXP GDC V8 Expresscard solution at a pretty fair and decent price (Christmas sales) from Banggood. Shipping to Romania was quite long, almost 2 months. In the meantime bought from a local guy, a Dell DA-2 220W power adapter which I heard it is plug'n'play. After arrival, I found out that I don't have the PCI-E power adapter for the graphic card, in my case a Gigabyte Radeon 6850 OC 1GB. That's the only card I have so, I was aware that I might need a display monitor. After another months of searching, found out on Banggood the holy PCI-E adapter specialy for EXP GDC solution. To be assured , bought 2 cables (just in case ) because the shipping was 1 month and 2 weeks (long, I know!). Well, last night I was dying to fire it up, so I put my Panasonic TV ( don't have a display monitor, lame, I know...) and put all cables and adapters together, the expresscard in T430 and fire it. My specs :i7-3610QM, 16GB HyperX Impact CL9, 1600x900, Intel HD4000 iGPU, Windows 7 64bit.After Windows loaded, my Radeon 6850 was found in D... Hello! Im having a little problem with my docking station. ThinkPad Mini Dock Series 3. Seems like the DisplayPort does not work. I use dual 1440p monitors from Phillips and want to connect both with DP as the DVI is single-link only. I have one of the monitors plugged in the MiniDP on the side of T430 so i got that working wich is nice.  Is there some kind of firmware or something i need to install to get the DP working on the docking station? Cant remember i have ever done this and as far as i know it ha never worked... Always used it with a single 24" monitor with VGA. Thanks.

Answer:T430 with ThinkPad Mini dock series 3 DisplayPort ...

This issue is driving me crazy!  I bought new DisplayPort Monitors for T430s ThinkPads using the Mini Dock Series 3 dock.  I have 4 identical laptops.  Same software and drivers with two Monitors.  One on the Dock DisplayPort and the other Monitor on the PC Mini DisplayPort.   Three laptops work perfectly.  The forth one blinks! I do have a newer T430s with the Invidia Graphics card that has the same symptoms, but I have come to the conclusion that Lenovo does not support multiple monitors with that version.  Lenovo, Please tell me there is a firmware update for the Type 4337 Mini Dock Series 3 dock.  I saw the link for the T540 dock firmware update.  Will it work on the Series 3 dock?

Hello, I have a very annoying problem. Sometimes when I open up my laptop, I will not be able to listen to anything on the internet because the audio is not working. However, start up sounds can be heard from the speakers when I first open my laptop, so I know the speakers work. The volume is up and it is not muted. Restarting the computer does not work. Jacking in headphones does not do anything either. However, other times I can open up my laptop and the audio works correctly as if nothing happened at all. I do not understand how the problem can exist at one point and go away during another. I would like an answer once and for all so that I know what to do when it occurs! Right now, when it occurs I just hope that it works at some later point in the day. Thanks in advance.

I got a ThinkPad T430 yesterday and have been enjoying setting everything up, installing all of my software, and tweaking every last setting to my personal preference. I've got almost everything set up the way I like it, but there's one big problem left. I cannot for the life of me find the option to enable right-click or middle-click using the touchpad. In my experience, when using standard laptop touchpads, you're generally able to right-click and middle-click using a two finger tap or three finger tap. Neither of these options work on my laptop. I have downloaded the Lenovo System Update software, which in turn updated all of my drivers. This includes my touchpad driver, so everything seems to be in order in that regard. However, I've gone through every option in the touchpad settings and can't seem to find what I'm looking for. I've included a screenshot of the touchpad settings, so if any of you can point me towards which option I'll need to explore in order to enable right-click and middle-click taps, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hello, and thank you in advance for any help.  As I've researched the Lenovo ThinkPad T430, and it's various configuration options, I've found specific information on the differences between the HD (1366 x 768) display and the HD+ (1600 x 900) display to be rather lacking.  Everything I've read boils down to "go with the HD+ if possible" but I was hoping for more information.  I'd be using the laptop for reading documents and web pages, as well as viewing movies, so I was wondering if more knowledgeable people than I would pipe in with their opinions, especially when it comes to watching movies on the laptop (in a dark room with the laptop at the foot of the bed and using headphones).  Thanks again for your time; I really appreciate it.

Answer:Thinkpad T430 Display: HD (1366 x 768) vs. HD+ (1600 x 900) Specifics

Hi,I bought my t530i with the HD (1366x768) display. I am absolutely disappointed in it. The viewing angle is horrible, the colors are whitey, pallid, the black color is not black, it is rather dark gray, because the backlight is so strong. I would like to sell it, because it is useless for me, but nobody wants it. I don't know if this applies to the 430 series, so I suggest You to check it out personally, before You buy it.Gellert
