X220 boot from USB issue

Question: X220 boot from USB issue

Current I've several x220 laptops in my company, when I wish to reinstall windows from USB flash drive, I found that all laptops are failed to detect the drive in BIOS. I check the USB boot option was enabled and the drive and boot from other desktop or laptops I've also tried to update the BIOS to latest version but still in vain. But it can boot from some other USB flash drives (not all..?) Is there any I can solve it?

Preferred Solution: X220 boot from USB issue

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: X220 boot from USB issue

Current I've several x220 laptops in my company and a new Sandisk Extreme USB 3.0 64G (SDCZ80-064G)usb flash drive. When I wish to reinstall windows (or boot) from this USB flash drive, I found that all laptops are failed to detect the drive in BIOS. I check the USB boot option was enabled and it didn't include inside the list pressing F12. I've tested the flash drive can boot from other desktop or laptops but only failed in this combination. I've also tried to update the BIOS to latest version but still in vain. Is there any method that I can solve it? Besides, why I can't download the drivers according to the laptop P/N? My laptops' P/N are 4268-PE9. Thanks a lot

This has been widely reported in the BSD/Linux community for a few years, but unfortuately there is still no fix available with the latest BIOS update.  Are there plans to fix this? Thanks, Joseph

Not at all sure this is a Lenovo X220 issue (win 7- 64bit), but I'm having the following problem with my 1tb WD My Passport Essential SE USB 3.0 external drive: It works fine when plugged into the USB 3.0 port.  However, if I safely eject it, and use it in a USB 2.0 port, it will not be recognized if I go back to the USB 3.0 port.  I can usely get it working again in USB 3.0 mode if I reboot. (I have two of these external drives, and the behavior is identical for both of them). I've tried lots of different things, but still can't solve this issue.  Are there any newer USB 3.0 drivers for Windows 7, or for the X220, that I should be installing?  The only one I see for USB 3.0 on the Lenovo site is for the Nec controller. Again - not saying this is a Lenovo issue, but I don't have another computer with USB 3.0, so I was hoping people might be able to tell me about their experience with USB 3.0 and the X220.  Thank you.

Answer:X220 - USB 3.0 issue

I updated the USB 3 drivers from Lenovo - even tried a later version from Renesas, but no resolution of the issue. Would be interested if anyone else out there is running USB 3 external drives in their X220 - if so, have you ever used the same drive in a USB 2 port? Thanks.

I recently transferred a large amount of files from a USB3.0 capable portable HDD and a superspeed USB3.0 cable. When plugged into the USB3.0 slot on my notebook, the transfer rate was shown as only 48MB/s instead of the theoretical 5GB/s. I tried plugging into the 2.0 slot on my notebook, and the transfer rate was shown as 36MB/s. Any idea what could be the problem here?

Answer:X220 USB 3.0 speed issue

The theoretical speed is if both ends are able to sustain that speed. At best, a spinning hard drive will provide up to 60MB/s-120MB/s under sequential reads, and up to 0.5MB/s-1.1MB/s under random reads. Hence, the USB 3.0 bandwidth will not be fully saturated.

Use HD Tune's trial and run a benchmark on the drive while attached to the USB 3.0 port.

Answer:Another Bluetooth x220 issue?

Hi,

Could you please check whether Bluetooth is enabled in BIOS?

Tap F1 while starting the system to get into BIOS. Under security tab, select I/O port access. Enable Bluetooth and check if Bluetooth is showing up in device manager. Also, check if you are able to find Bluetooth radios in device manager.

Post back if issue persists!

Best regards,
Mithun.

Hello, I have been having an issue with my X220 freezing. This tends to happen relatively randomly, however I have noticed it more frequently under these specific circumstances:Plugging in the computerUnplugging the computerWhen there is a shift in the speed of the fanThis is not to say that the computer always freezes under these conditions, but this is when I tend to notice it most. To describe the issue further, when I mean that the computer freezes, the screen locks up and I cannot move the mouse with either thre trackpoint or pad. I cannot use the keyboard either, with neither esc, cntrl-alt-del or any other combination of buttons functioning to make the computer come back to normal. The only way I can "resolve" the issue is by doing a forced restart my holding down the power button. After it restarts, it is fine, at least until another freeze. Another issue that I've had that may be related is that for a while when I closed the lid of the computer to put it to sleep, the computer would shut down. I've checked all of my settings regarding power management and what the computer should do when the lid is closed, and it was always set to put the computer to sleep when the lid was closed, so that is not the issue. As a temporary solution I've now changed that setting to have the computer go into hibernation when the lid is closed, which does not cause shut downs, but it is obviously less desireable than just having the computer go to sleep. I called Lenov... hey mctagga9,just curious to know, have you done a full system update of your x220 ?if you have not, kindly do so. If you have updated your unit, could you access msconfig and use diagnostic startup.this mode will make windows load only windows driver. by doing so, you can check if the problem stems from a non-windows driver or something else.

Hello, I have a 802.11n issue that drives me crazy..My X220 with 6205n Wifi adapter cannot connect to the router in N mode. The router is a huawei HG655b, using WPA2-PSK/AES. All my other computers at home can connect in N mode, but the X200.It only connects in b and g modes, as soon as I swith the X220 adapter's N mode on from device manager, it disconnects. I have updated the Wifi driver to the last version from Lenovo site, I have changed Power options on both battery and Ac to maximum performance for Wifi...what else could it be? An incompatibility with the router?

My X220 doesn't seem to detect headphones properly.  Sound comes out of them instead of the internal speakers, but the audio mixer still shows the device connected as "speakers."  My old laptop could detect when headphones are plugged in and kept separate volume levels for headphones vs internal speakers, should the X220 be able to do this? I'm running Windows 7 on an i5-2520M with 8GB RAM.

Answer:X220 Headphone Detection issue

Actually this made me curious, so I checked out my X220, and indeed it worked like you described. However, I found a way to change that to provide the effect you're looking for. In Control Panel, click the Smart Audio icon. This will bring up the Smart Audio panel. Click Audio Director, one of the bottom icons. This brings up two choices, Classic & Multi-Stream. Changing to Multi-Stream recognizes the headphones when plugged in, and indeed maintains a different volume level. Hope that works for you!

My laptop screen has developed a vertical grey band about 10cm wide which starts very light but as I leave the laptop switched on gets increasingly dark and when dark I can see effectively a shadow of a previous image on the screen, making it very difficult to read. I'm concerned that it may not simply be a screen replacement issue as there seems some comment that it may be a connector cable issue.  Any ideas?

My manager uses the offline files feature quite a lot and now she has moved to an X220 with Win 7 Pro 64-bit, however some days when she logs in she notices the sync icon isn't in the tray. When you go into offline files it says its enable but not active a restart will activate it. However rebooting leads to the same thing, instead I go into the services page and find that although set to auto the offline file service is not running, I click start and it kicks back into life. Now I have viewed the event viewer from when the computer starts and the Offline file service first starts then gchanges state to auto (delayed) then changes back to auto before finally saying that the service has stopped. All of these are info events as opposed to error or warning events. I know some services don't run even when set to auto as they are not needed however without offfline files service running no syncing is done and you also lose the "Always available offline" option when you right click a folder/file. If anyone has any ideas as to whyt the service is stopping that would be great. Mark

It is caused by a bug in "RapidBoot" which is software that Lenovo preloads.  You can either (a) uninstall RapidBoot or (b) upgrade to the latest version which fixes this bug.  I recommend (a) - you won't miss RapidBoot by uninstalling it.  Sorry for your inconvenience.

I've played youtube video w/ chromium on xubuntu 16.04, pressed pause while being in fullscreen mod and closed the lid as usually. When I opened it, everything ran very slowly, all animations were stuttering, exhaust air was pretty hot, fan spinned at full speed, but there was less than 8% CPU load and 1 GB of RAM used. What I tried already: rebooting, taking out and putting back the battery, loading previous kernel version from grub menu. Then I swapped ssd with another laptop in house, which had windows 7 and xubuntu dualboot. Both systems ran slowly on x220, and xubuntu from x220 ran good on other laptop, so my conclusion was: there's a hardware problem with x220. Then I turned off Intel SpeedStep and CPU power management features in bios and turned on again, nothing changed. I put back ssd with xubuntu in x220 and ran dmesg console utility, this is what output looks like: https://pastebin.com/YREFCZQZ but I can't make any decision from this data. What should I do next to deal with this problem?

Hi I recently flashed my BIOS (going from 1.26 -> 1.31) prior to installing Windows 7 x64 on a new SSD on my X220. The BIOS update seemed to work OK (I used the lenovo Windows utility to do it), but now I can't save any changes to any BIOS settings. I also cannot reset to defaults - I can't even select some options in the BIOS (e.g. anything to do with UEFI) - the cursor just skips over the lines on screen - and those I can select don't respond to any changes I try to make. I don't get any errors either in BIOS or in Windows, and my X220 boots OK, but obviously there's something wrong there. After updating the BIOS, I installed the SSD (a Samsung 830) and installed Windows on it - all this worked OK although I was planning to switch to UEFI for the new install and couldn't do so because the BIOS is now uneditable. Everything in Windows seems to work OK. I've tried re-running the BIOS utility but it reports that the BIOS is up to date and it won't re-apply the current update.  I've checked to see if anyone else has reported this issue here, and found a few reports with similar issues but different situations (e.g. people running Linux rather than Windows, or Wifi not working after the update) - but not this issue exactly. I'm wondering if this will fix itself when a new BIOS version is released and applied - if that's likely, I'm happy to wait until then (so long as nothing breaks in the meantime). I'd rather do that than pull the CMOS battery ... Read more

Hi, everybody! I have I strange problem. My ThinkVantage Fingerprint Software was working fine a few days ago until I had to uninstall the software. I had to uninstall it because my x200 had a motherboard problem and went to service. Meanwhile I used the HDD with another notebook. That's why I had to remove the fingerprint software. I got my x220 back and I tried to install the fingerprint (along with all other software and drivers) software, but I'm getting this message and the installation stops: You have currently installed another version of fingerprint software. Please, uninstall your existing software before running this installation. Actually, there's no sign left from the fingerprint software. I removed it via the Programs and Features menu, I entered BIOS, removed all the fingerprint data from the new motherboard (although I believe that was not quite necessary since it's a brand-new motherboard). All other drivers and software installed fine, without any problem. Has someone else encountered a similar problem? I'd appreciate it very much if you help me somehow. Thanks!

Hi, For few weeks now, I have been experiencing a very frustrating battery issue with my X220. Usually I put my laptop in hibernation while there is still a good battery capacity (70-80%) at night (or before going to work). On the next day, when restarting the laptop, both Power manager and the windows gauge are indicating close to the same percentage as just before it was stopped the night before. Then after a random time, ranging from few minutes to a hour or so, windows will notify me that the battery is at a critical level of charge (6%) while just before both Power manager and windows indicator were showing something like 60% remaining. At that point windows shows 6% while power manager still shows the previous level of charge (let say 60%). After few minutes, Power manager indicator goes all to 6% and then the PC hibernates.  I think that my issue appeared after I updated Power manager, I reinstalled it including its driver with no luck...I am now performing a battery reset to see if it helps. I read several other posts regarding similar issues on the lenovo forums, it was suggested that some battery cells might been faulty and that a battery swap might solve the problem. However, as far as I read, it seems that people who performed a battery swap were still experiencing the issue. I wanted to know if there were any know fix for this battery issue or at least what steps I should be taking to investigate/debug this issue? ... Answer:Battery issue (6-cells) with my X220

To get the obvious out of the way, when your battery life suddenly drops off, are you watching YouTube or surfing Flash-heavy web sites? Yeah, a sudden drop-off in indicated battery life sounds like a driver issue, so I dunno...maybe you could try rolling back the battery driver or Power Manager. (There's a way to roll back the driver via Windows Device Manager, right? Just make sure you don't uninstall the driver through Windows; there should be a button to click for "roll back driver.") I suggest making regular full-system-image backups of your X220 while you're working on the drivers. With my old x100e, I got myself into trouble after uninstalling AMD Catalyst Controller, and it just refused to reinstall. Do you think like...a battery calibration would work? Go into Power Manager, Advanced, then Global Settings. Go to the battery low/critical section and click the box that says "do nothing" for when low and critical are reached. Power Manager will force the computer to run, even though the battery will broadcast a 0% level remaining. (And just to be safe, run the calibration with everything closed, use Power Manager to set the CPU to "low," and set a video looping in WMP or something like that, at brightness 11 of 15.)  It's not too healthy for the battery (to deep discharge), but if you get 3-6 hours in that test, it'll be safe to say the problem's in the software, either something hogging CPU power or a driver issue. I've done it a bunch of times, but... I tried to download the adapter driver for my ethernet cable to work: http://support.lenovo.com/en_SE/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS019204 but for some reason, it does not install, or if it says it does install, the connection/ adapter still doesn't work (has the exclamation point in device manager).  I tried uninstalling the network connection adapter, then downloading and installing the driver, and then rebooting and it still does not work.  What can I do?  I have the X220 and have experienced many such problems, but this seems to be the most frustrating. Thanks very much.

Hi,i just think that fan pulsing issue maybe needs new thread here because some major problems  pointed here http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/X220-fan-constantly-on-revving-up-and-down/td-... are with new bios (1.16) solved. So, as many user may experience - thinkpad x220i (i3), but also other x220 series have this fan pulsing problem. If you put your ear at the fan area you could notice every 3-4 sec some sort of pulsing/beating. This pulsing is gone between 1954-1972 RPMs by my x220, but at all other RPMs i can hear it, or even feall it with my hand on keyboard.I uploaded the sound of this pulsing fan here:http://thinkpad-forum.de/threads/110463-X220-Serie?p=1092014&viewfull=1#post1092014 You can hear it with headphones an 100% Volume. Hi everyone,  I have a problem with the wi fi connection in my laptop, the computer doesent read the wirelees divise. when I click Fn F5 all I can see is the bluetooth adapter, no wifi adapter to turn on or off, this have been happening reacently, yesterday I downloaded the drivers and nothing, then I restarted the computer several times and it began to work again but after I put the laptop in stand by the problem came back again, now im using a datacard to connect to the internet. Thank you for your help.

Answer:Thinkpas X220 Wi Fi connectivity issue

Hi,it seems I have the similar issue with my x220 and wifi card Intel Centrino 1000 - sometimes after laptop resumes from sleep wifi card disapears not only from control window after Fn+F5 pressing, but from Device Manager.I think it's a power management driver related issue but can't explain why. Or some tool from Hotkey Features Integration package doesn't work properly. I've noticed several times at this moment monitor driver (in Device Manager too) didn't work also. But the biggest and the most trouble is laptop can't be rebooted or turned off correctly - every time when wifi adapter disapears after 5-7 minutes of tasks closing I get a BSOD with Power Management error message. Of course, wifi adapter works correctly after laptop turning on.And another one trouble - after I've deleted Access Connections wireless devices control window (after Fn+F5) can't be opened with error message. What I did?1. delete and reinstall Hotkey and PM driver manually. No effect.2. delete Hotkey and PM driver, reinstall them using System Update. No effect. These issues are very unpleasant but I don't want to revert laptop to the factory stage.x220, win7pro 64 bit, bios 1.19, drivers and OS updates are up to date.

I have not been able to 'plug in' my AC adaptor properly for almost 6 months. It always slides out a little after plugging in. At first, it was just a tiny problem and I managed to wiggle it manually. But now I cannot even charge unless I wiggle it for a good 10-15 minutes to find a good 'spot' then physically hold the cord in place. I thought it was the AC, but having tried a new AC adaptor that changed nothing, I started to think it's the DC. Called Lenovo today,  but was told that DC is not covered by warranty (although my machine is still under warranty). I don't know why it's not under warranty, as quite a number of threads have reported this issue here. Anyway, Lenovo asked me to just find a local service provider if I want to have a check up and change the DC (not keen on sending in the machine), but would changing the DC affect my warranty? (If it requires opening up the machine..etc). p.s. Lenovo Switzerland is very unhelpful in this regard (called them 5 times and was passed around to different people), so I had to post the question here. Thanks in advance.

I purchased this unit June 2012, following update recommendations through Lenovo Solution Center since that date.  BIOS 1.33.  Recently installed Crucial 256gb mSATA SSD.  TrackPoint and TrackPad worked fine until yesterday.  I also use a Lenovo Bluetooth mouse, purchased three months ago, and all three forms of GUI cursor navigation worked fine until yesterday.  I used a wired USB mouse to navigate while (1) uninstalling and reinstalling the Bluetooth mouse drivers. (2) I found a thread on this site that spoke of disabling and re-enabling the TrackPoint and the TrackPad in the BIOS.  When both are enabled, neither works.  When the TrackPad is disabled, the TrackPoint works.  When the TrackPoint is enabled and the TrackPad remains enabled, nothing works.  I have uninstalled the UltraNav drivers and installed the current Synaptics driver (from their site), 16.2.21.0 dated 10/26/2012.  I then alternatively disabled and enabled TrackPoint and TrackPad in BIOS as above, and the result is the same. I've deleted the driver subdirectory that contains the UltraNav driver.  I did that before installing the Synaptics driver.  When I use Lenovo Solutions to search for updates, it asks me to download Synaptics UltraNav driver 16.2.5.0, which I then download and installed.  fn-f8, however, says that both TrackPoint and TrackPad must be enabled in the BIOS for UltraNav to work.  When I do that and press fn-f8, I am ... Hello,

I've purchased the Lenovo X220 laptop with the Premium HD IPS display and I do have a problem with it (see below).
Laptop was purchased something like month ago and I've spotted this after I've started to work with it more heavily but after 14 days, so I was not able to return it to the seller (http://www.lenovoonline.cz).

When you put backlight to maximum you see that the display is not evenly lighted and forming bright spots on the bottom of it. It's most noticable on the black background.

I've sent notebook for repair (http://www.pcnet.cz) with this description (translated to english):"With maximum brightness set and the black display/background (eg. BOOT screen) on the bottom edge of the display there are visible white spots/maps. Small but visible and not even with different sizes. It's most visible on black background and while limiting external light (darker room, working in the night). Spots highlights even more when you try to pull the display towards you into steeper angle."

The laptop has been in the repair for 2 weeks and the result was this description:
"This kind of display is very sensitive to any pressure, and it will result in the brightening the place. It is specific for this model line and it's not the reason to warranty repair. We recommend to lower the brightness level in the darker room. Check of the display frame has been done and no problem has been found."
Later they said they've re... Read more

Answer:X220 IPS display backlight issue (with photos)

Yes, at maximum brightness level the backlight bleeding is very visible but I use it at 5 or 6 level where it has excellent contrast ratio considering how crappy current notebook displays are in general. The uneven backlight is caused by fancy LED backlight which is still not able to deliver similar quality regarding uniformity as good old CCFL backlight (that's why professional LCD monitors still rely on W-CCFL backlight). But I agree that the top-left corner is way too much bad and might indicate that the panel is seated badly in the frame. On the other hand my old IPS panel in R51 also have backlight bleed at maximum brightness level. Major problem is that Lenovo is still not able to fix the stupid bug with brightness level always set to max in BIOS screen that the backlight bleeding is very visible and irritating everytime you boot your machine. IMHO, the X220 IPS panel is still much better than any ugly contrastless TN panel Lenovo puts into ThinkPads (except 15" FHD). I bet that you would hate the X220i TN panel more than this one  There are also two different revisions of the IPS panel, the second one fixes problems with image retention. As for comparison with Z60m, X220 display lid is much more fragile so the panel is not protected well against pressures and flexes. In any case panel flex should affect the backlight bleeding temporarily only. If it persists it is subject to repair (replace, reseat etc.). Unfortunately I don't have any good low-ligh... Read more

Hi,I tried to find an answer to what happened to my X220 last week end. Suddenly it stopped being able to wake from sleep. Power button "breathing" green ring present, but it was not waking up by opening the lid or by Fn key press. When powered off by long press of power button, it booted successfully. This behavior was reproducible always. I thought maybe BIOS reset could help and I did it. After this it did not POST and it beeped 1 3 3 1 pattern - which is, according to documentation, system board or RAM. Having known the RAM was fine, I did pull them out and tried both modules one by one with no luck. So I took them out and went for original, small module, the machine was bought with. And it POSTed successfully with it. But after removing this module and returning the old, big modules, it POSTed too. And waking problem disappeared. Should I be worried about system board? My machine was made between Sep and Dec 2011, could it be early manifestation of dead EEPROM? Is there any way to test it?

I wanted more capacity so foolishly replaced my trouble free 256gb Samsung 830 SSD with the 480GB Corsair Neutron GTX SSD on my Thinkpad X220 (should have stuck with Samsung) and whilst the Neutron GTX is hyper-fast, its giving me a problem. When i try to shut down Windows 7 (Pro 64 bit OEM), the notebook freezes at the "windows shutting down" screen (happens around 1 in 5 times) and i'm forced to remove the battery or hold down the power button to switch off the notebook. When i switch on the notebook again i get the message:"2100: Detection Error on HDD0 (Main HDD)"Pressing escape a few times does finally take me into Windows and everything works ok until i get the same issue again a few shutdowns later. I've formatted the SSD and re-installed Windows 7 again (in AHCI mode) but the problem still exists. This issue did NOT exist with the Samsung 830 SSD. The BIOS is up to date, ALL hardware drivers/firmware are up to date. I'm thinking perhaps the Corsair SSD is faulty so will test it in my desktop to see if i can replicate the issue. But before i do that, can anyone suggest other possible solutions?

Hello, I recently purchased a x220 and I am very happy with it. I turned off  "sleep when closed" for some reason and then accidently left it in my bag for like 15-20mins. It was hot but didn't really smell like burnt plastic or anything. However I feel as if the screen is harder to get at the right brightness. It feels as if I have to get a very precise angle to view the screen at the proper brightness/clarity. However it is hard for me to say if there is any difference to before as this happened only a week after using it. It could be acting just fine and I am just paranoid so my question is has there been any issues that have come up like this before? Has overheating in a bag or something ever caused the LCD screen to function just slightly improperly? Thank you,

Answer:x220 got hot, and now screen display clarity issue?

Well, first of all, I hope you're talking about the basic, TN LCD display, not the upgraded "Premium HD" IPS LCD screen. Anyway, personally I feel like it's so easy to be paranoid about screen quality and possible minor screen damage or defects, but Lenovo has owned up to the "ghosting" issue, so things can really happen sometimes. In your case, I wouldn't worry. Provided you are indeed talking about the basic TN screen and not the IPS, it sounds like your screen's viewing angles are performing normally. For some extra confidence, the Notebookcheck review of the X220 says their test unit got so hot under the sun that the plastic began to warp and bow, and even then, they didn't mention any screen degredation. And for that matter, isn't the X220 Mil-spec tested for heat? http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Lenovo-ThinkPad-X220-IPS-Subnotebook.55639.0.html

Hello ThinkPad-Community, I have a sporadic issue with the brightness control, thats mean sometimes I start my laptop from standby and the control with "Fn+Pos1 or FN+END" doesn't work. There is no reaction and no on screen display progress bar. Also in the default Windows 7 energy settings is no control of the display brightness possible. If the issue exist, only a complete reboot of the ThinkPad solve the issue. I've also found some discussions about this in the internet but no solution helps realy. NOTE: My Laptop has a complete clean install of Windows 7 and all drivers was installed by Lenovo System Updater.Does anybody have the same issue? Thanks for your help

Answer:Brightness control issue on ThinkPad X220

This is an on & off issue that creeps up on various Thinkpads. It was very notorious on my X120e, but it doesn't happen on my X220 at all, and I sleep/resume it all the time...It's a bug they can't seem to correct.

I have updated to latest version 15.6.1 from 15.03.1000.163 (Windows 7 64 bit)http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS015011 I have disabled virtual wifi hosted network by 'netsh wlan set hostednetwork disallow' command that always worked for previous driver versions. This version installed two adapters 'Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter' and 'Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter #2'  that appear in Device Manager and disabling the hosted network no longer works. The netsh disallow command reports ok but 'netsh wlan show hostednetwork' always reports Allowed state. I have tried to remove the driver at all, restart and install it again but the issue persists. The only fix is to revert back to previous one 15.03.1000.163 I think this is a security issue that has to be resolved because the hosted network can not be safely disabled.

I recently purchased a Lenovo X220 and I am attempting to setup a dual monitor with it and a Samsung Syncmaster BX2331 monitor. When I change the setting to extended desktop on the secondary monitor the laptop monitor starts having issues. The useable space becomes bigger than the actual screen so I can scroll up and down while on the desktop. It will also scroll left and right and the desktop icons will move over onto the secondary monitor. The laptop has a resolution of 1366x768 and the monitor is 1920x1080. I am trying to explain the issue the best I can but it's a little hard to explain.

Answer:Dual monitor issue Lenovo x220

I know what you mean, it happened in XP when you set the screen resolution larger than what the screen was capable of. What cable are you using the connection to your secondary monitor? On the secondary monitor, press the auto calibrate button, or it's equivalent, and then unplug the VGA/HDMI cable and plug it back in see if that fixes your problem. it's also worth trying going into the settings and checking the button that says "hides modes not supported by this monitor" If you don't know where that is, right click on the desktop and click "screen resolution" then click advanced and at the bottom of that pop up you should see that check box. Those are the first things to check.

I've been having this awful issue with my X220 recently.  Whenever the microphone is active, whether in a skype call, recording audio with some random flash app, or just viewing the microphone settings it causes the audio output, whether from the spakers or headphones, to cut in and out in a really odd fashion.  It won't completely cut the audio off, but rather go in and out of playing the audio normally to this weird status of playing audio like it's somewhat muffled.  If I go into the audio devices and disable the microphone the problem goes away completely, but it only really occurs when something is using the microphone. All of the settings in skype and windows relating to letting applications control audio and reducing volume for calls have been disabled as well. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the audio drivers, and am up to date on bios and everything else.Windows 7 x64

I am fairly technical and usually able to troubleshoot most problems, but I am stumped.   I have had intermitted loss of internet connectivity since shortly after (maybe right away) I bought my X220 a few months ago.  The machine will lose internet connectivity and regain it randomly.  Other machines working through the same router will have internet connectivity and the X220 has no problem directly connecting to the router.  It does not appear to be a DNS issue since I try pinging 8.8.8.8 as a test.  I am able to log into my router just fine though.  It is very strange that the router connects to the internet, I connect to the router but the computer doesn't connect to the internet.  I assume this has some software component to the problem, but don't know what. The issue are worse when I am using mobile broadband, but still occurs at my house.  System ConfigurationX220 4286CTOCore i5-2410 2.3ghzWindows 7 64bit Home PremiumBios: 8DEET50WW 1.2 7/7/20114GBIntel Centrino Andavnced-N Wimax 6250- Intel Centrino Andavnced-N AGN Driver v14.0.1.2 12/21/2010- Intel Centrino WiMax 6250 Diver v6.2.1007.26 1/18/2011Other Network Adapters Installed- Blueooth PAN- Bluetoooth RFCOMM Protocol TD- Hamachi Network Interface- Intel 82568LM Gigagbit- MSFT Virtual WiFi Miniport Adaptner- PDANet Broadband AdapterHave Access Connections installed

Ok, I'm posting this as a separate thread, since it was so strange.Upon learning about how to get full power to the headphone jack, by clicking on the headphones in the SmartAudio control panel, I enabled it. I plugged in my 90watt ultraslim and the x220 started making a terrible microphonic whine, like it was screaming, almost. The sound was coming out of the back of the laptop. Also, the battery refused to charge. As soon as I disabled the headphone boost, the laptop accepted the 90watt ultraslim and started charging as normal.I'm holding on to the 90watt slim for now, since I only use it for charging, but now after this last find, I think I have to get more compatible adapter... Yes, JameZ, I will make a video displaying both isues for engineering.

There's a 48-page discussion on the backlight bleeding of the x220 on the Lenovo forums (http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/Faint-Ghosting-on-X220-IPS-screen/td-p/435201). There are also many smaller threads regarding problems with the x220 IPS screen and to a lesser extent the x230 screen. I recently purchased an x230 and experienced bleeding. Due to my onsite warranty IBM support came and replaced the screen- but the new one still had bleeding. Another engineer came out, brought a new back-panel (because the flex of the panel seemed to be causing it) and said "this isn't broken- I have seen lots of x220s and x230s with this problem- its a design default". Could I challenge Lenovo to provide me with an x230 IPS screen which does not bleed? I cannot believe Lenovo released/designed a laptop with such a glaring (no pun intended) fault. Has anyone here got an x230 (or x220) IPS screen where there is absolutely no backlight bleeding on a dark background?

Answer:All x220 and x230 IPS screens have backlight bleeding issue?

All X230 and X220 LG IPS will have some degree of bios bleed, it is just matter of severity.

I regularly use Lenovo update to check for any new drivers/updates. After an update to bios 1.25, my computer attempted to reboot, but it never really shut down. After 15 minutes of just black screen, I pulled the battery to force it off. When I attempted to reboot, no POST, just black screen. The Thinklight and green lights will flash, but nothing happens. So, I called Lenovo, and went through some basic troubleshooting which did not help. This all happened on Sunday, January 29th.  On Monday, January 30th, I called Lenovo again, and they said it would take about 2 weeks to :- send me the box- I send my laptop in- They fix it- They ship it back to me. I couldn't afford to wait 2 weeks, so Lenovo suggested me to find a Business partner locally. Lenovo site led me to Microserve in Burnaby, BC, Canada. I dropped it off on Monday, and they called me back on Tuesday to let me know that the mainboard needs to be replaced and ETA for the part is February 2nd, Thursday. Work will take 1-2 business days. So I waited. No update on Thursday, Friday or Monday (February 6th).  I called Microserve and they then told me that the part is not available, and they have no idea when it will come. They said they will look into it. So, I called Lenovo directly and asked them to follow up with this business partner about the part order. Today, I received a call from Microserve, telling me that the part MAY arrive in 2 weeks, and they will fix it WHENEVER the... Hi,

I want to report issue with Lenovo X220 and Lotus Notes 8.5.x.
Problem is that Lotus Notes has missing some of its buttons.
Example if you try to forward message send button is not visible untill you refresh screen by pressing F5
I think problem is with Intel display drivers.

If you uninstall driver and use "standarg vga" all is working ok.
I have tested all Intel drivers that you can download on Lenovos site but everyone have same issue.

Also tested this with multiple computers and all have this same issue.

Any ideas?

My x220 tablet is haveing issues with the graphics card shutting off. I purchased my x220t about 3 months ago and I have begun to have a reacurring problem. I will be running CAD 2011, nothing 3D, and the screen will spontanneously go black. 5 seconds later, it will restart and an issue report will pop up in the bottom right and corner of the screen. This issue is a real problem since I bought this laptop for engineering and with an i5 processor, CAD sould be running fine. I did not expect the graphics card to be a limiting factor since I am only using 2D visualls right now. I have tried to find similar if others have had a similar issue but I can not find anything. What should I do? ps, I have a screen shot of the info but I am unable to post it.

Hi
I am facing a very weired problem with my lenovo x220. I have been using this laptop for few years and never faced any issues with my x220. But from last few weeks i am facing a problem that cannot be ractiifed. I have changed my laptop screen as it was shattered few weeks ago. Since that i have problem to power on my laptop. I have remove the battery and hold the power button 30 second  to reset the battery. Sometime it works and sometime it doesn't. I have changed the CMOS battery as it was identified as dead. After replacing the old CMOS battery with a new one i am still facing the same problem. Sometime the laptop did power on after removing the battery and hold the power on button for 30 seconds and put the battery back to power up but it is doesnt work all the time. Sometime i have to try few hours by removing the battery and hold the power button for 30 seconds. Once it power on it works fine and even if i shutdown the laptop it still manages to power on normally straight after but if the laptop didnt turned on for few hours it goes back to that stupid mode of not powering up. Can someone please help me/advice me regarding to this issues. Thank you in advnace.

Question: X220 can't boot

Hi,I'm currently struggling with my used X220.  Whenever I'm starting up the device i get past the ThinkPad page and into the Intel BootAgent. I see the message  Intel(R) Boot Agent PXE Base Code (PXE-2.1 build 087)Copyright (c) ---copyright info----PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cablePXE-M0F: Exiting Intel Boot Agent. and the device jumps into a Boot Menu with my hard drive and LAN adapter listed. When trying to boot from the hard drive the screen goes black for a second and goes back to the Boot Menu. I can run Linux ISO files, but even when installing a new linux system next to the windows system, it still gets stuck in the Boot Menu. Another weird thing is that my USB Stick only boots when a linux ISO is on it, not with a Windows7 Professional (the installed windows).  The recovery partition is still on the device, even tho trying to restore it by entering the menu and pressing F11 doesn't work (only options to go into bios, boot menu or power engine management (?)). I just updated the BIOS to 1.4, could this be the cause?I'm really scared that I ruined this laptop, since I just got it a while ago and don't have any warranties on it.

Question: X220 won't Boot

1. The power switch button is not working always.2. Have to clear CMOS by disconnecting CMOS battery. (before clear CMOS, laptop won't boot anyway)3. Then, plug in power cable, the laptop power on itself without press any button.4. CMOS error -- time and date need to be reset5. If I didn't reset CMOS, the laptop will turn off and turn on again, show same error information.6. Ignore the resetting requirement. The laptop will start Windows. You can use it. (power switch button still not working) Back to step 4, if I reset the date and time, then the laptop goes back to step 1.  I have replaced CMOS battery, still have the same issue.Do you have any suggestion? MOBO failed? Power switch button problem? Update CMOS?

Answer:X220 won't Boot

Ignore items 2-5. The machine will always do that if you pull the CMOS battery. I would try a different keyboard (power switch)

Good morning - This is mostly directed at Lenovo Support Staff, but also to those with a X220 Tablet or similar. After hours of troubleshooting, I finally found the cause of my Windows 7 Pro Shutdown issue. The Tablet would hang at Shutdown, then BSOD.  I systematically removed drivers until I found the cause. The current installed version of the Thinkpad Tablet Button Driver, Version 1.04.0.0 as installed by System Update was the culprit.  As soon as I uninstalled that driver, no more issues. I have yet to try the driver that is available from Windows Update - if I have a similar issue, I will go ahead and update this post. Hopefully this will provide some enlightenment to those few who've had to track down a similar issue, and let's hope Lenovo will respond. *Edit*I realize this is in the wrong forum.  Can the Moderator please move it to the X-Series Tablet Forum?  Thanks

We discovered this problem in early August with our new X220 tablets.  We have a 1-to-1 tablet pc program.  About 75% of our freshmen class has experienced this issue.  The tablets are running on battery power with the extended battery slice.  The units will spontaneously just power off.  Not a clean shutdown but just a power off.  The batteries are in various states when this happens, most of the time both batteries are almost fully charged.  I've witnessed this dozens of times with the students in my classes.  We found out that this also is affecting another high school in our consortium.  We bulk purchase our tablets with several other high schools.  The other high school that is experiencing this issue has the same model and the same manufacturer date 6-11-2012.  We estimate 200-300 units are affected between the two schools.  Lenovo product engineers are working on finding the source of the problem, but we currently have many frustrated students and parents.  Just curious if anyone else has seen this issue with X220 tablets and slices that were manufactured around the first part of June?

I ran into a strange situation where I am unable to boot from USB flash drives. I have 2 bootable flash drives containing live CD images. I know the drives are bootable because I tested both of them on 3 laptops ranging from 3 to 6 years old and they were able to boot from these drives. It is only with the X220 that I am unable to boot from them.Let me call the USB drives A and B. I was able to boot from A for a short amount of time. B I was able to get into the GRUB bootloader by pressing F10 at the boot diagnostic screen, but it does not load the live OS, instead it would hand and return a blank screen. However, today the X220 refused to boot the USB flash drives all together. It would still boot from external USB CD drives with a live CD, so it's unlikely to be a hardware fault. The BIOS does recognize the USB flash drives as USB HDD; however it would refuse to boot these drives. The X220 goes straight to booting the Windows 7 OS on the primary hard drive. I have no docking bay or anything attached. I have checked that all the relevant settings in the BIOS are correct:1. UEFI USB -> enabled. This enables USB devices to be booted.2. Starting several months ago, my X220 either goes into bootloop if docked, or it boots but doesn't recognize USB devices.  I've gone into BIOS and changed any setting i thouight might be related - boot order, USB setting UEFE/Legacy settings, etc.  UI've gone back to defaults, then tried other combinations.  No luck. If I boot untethered, all is well and it recognizes USB devices once docked. Anyomne have any ideas?

Question: X220 slow boot?

Hello- I have a X220 and I installed Windows 7 Pro using UEFI mode. The machine is taking a long time to boot: approx. 5 seconds for the screen backlight to lit up, another 5 seconds for the Thinkpad logo to appear, and the logo screen will stay there for like 10 seconds. It's pretty fast after that. I thought UEFI should boot faster than BIOS but on my W500 the entire POST process takes less than 5 seconds. Anybody knows what's going on? Thanks =)

Hello Everyone! I just recieved my new X220 by UPS this morning and I've been loving using it, Windows 7 is not as bad as I had expected it to be (I've usedOS X since '05.) and the keyboard is great, and the trackpoint too. Overall I'm very impressed with the hardware so far. I am wanting to install linux on this because I miss the comfort of the bash shell. So I loaded up my flash drive with UNetBootin as I usually would do for a USB install since this has no cd drive. When I get the thinkpad splash screen I hit F12 to go into boot options and I selected the correct USB drive, but when I hit enter to boot from it...the screen goes black for a second, then comes back to the boot menu. Any ideas as to why it might not be working?

Answer:X220: USB Boot Issues.

I'm not sure what the bios looks like on an x220 but there should be an option in there under config to enable or disable usb boot.  Make sure it's enabled.

I created a bootable Acronis agent on a spare SD card, and was hoping I could boot from it, like you can from USB sticks, since like most machines I assume the SD reader is connected internally on the USB bus. However, when I press F12 at startup to select another boot device, it does not recognize the SD card inserted, yet it does a USB stick. I currently have BIOS 1.16, I was wondering if those with BIOS 1.19 (which fixed the mSATA boot problem) could check if they insert a SD card, and press F12 during startup if its recognized as a boot device. Thanks

Answer:X220 - boot from SD slot?

The internal SD card reader is not a bootable device. It's connected to PCI-E bus (for better performance I think, it showed much higher speed than average external ones), which means BIOS could not access it like commom internal/USB drives (mSATA is a new category but basically internal drive with a new interface).Even the BIOS could recognize it, the on-card software needs driver for the card reader, or they will simply fail to load themselves because they cannot access their own media. If you have to use a bootable SD, use with a USB port card reader. The Mass Storage Device standard devices are commonly bootable.

I have a Lenovo X220 laptop with a 320GB Hitachi hard drive, and it works just fine. But I decided I needed more speed,so I bought a Samsung 830 SSD for it. I cloned the entireX220 hard drive to the SSD (using a USB external case andHDClone4), and everything looks fine on the SSD (when viewedwith Partition Wizard on another machine while the SSD is stillin the USB enclosure). But the SSD will not boot in the X220!It starts, and in fact it gets as far as saying "Starting Windows",and then moving the four color dots (of Windows 7) around alittle bit, and then it momentarily flashes the dreadedwhite-on-blue screen (so fast you cannot tell what it says),and then it enters the recovery-menu screen. Bummer!I called Lenovo tech support and they essentially told me toGET LOST because they "don't support" me installing an SSD(even though the X220 User's Guide shows exactly that).I've used HDClone4 several times in the past (to clone harddrives for my stable of Lenovo T60 laptops), and it seems toalways work just fine. So why is this not working for my X220and Samsung 830? Note that, while I don't expect Lenovo tocertify compatibility with every flea-bit SSD on the market, this Samsung 830 is highly regarded by many well-respectedreviewers (Tom's Hardware, my favorite, in particular).Has anyone here heard this song before? Is there somethingpeculiar about the X220 and/or the Samsung 830? I'd sureappreciate any helpful advice. Thanks.

I share your pain with same Intel WiFi Link 1000 bgn.  After many, many hours yesterday I am now solidly running Wireless N at 144 Mbps on a LinkSys E4200, 99% reception from 30 feet away.   Previous to yesterday I could not get 'N' to work at all. First, if you have a newer dual frequency Router, this Intel adapter only supports 2.4ghz.. 1. I am using Access Connections 5.85, Windows 7 2. Router: 2.4 Ghz Network Mode: Mixed 3. On my LinkSys router Channel: Auto NEVER worked for either  'G' or 'N'.  I picked channel 4 by chance and things got better.  No further experiments.  3. Channel Width: Auto (20mhz or 40mhz). 4. Earlier forums indicate WPA2-P and AES must be selected.  That's what I am running. 5. Hello Sorry for the following long post, but I want to mention every point that might be important concerning my problem. Preliminary note:I can't really affort to buy a new laptop right now and I need one quite urgently for a continuing education which starts this week. So, I soon need to know, how to proceed - whether I actually need a new laptop or can continue to use my current one. About 3 months ago my Laptop (Thinkpad X220 with Windows 7) suddenly stopped after a normal boot, short after Windows was running - maybe because of a power issue or a memory failure, I'm not sure what really caused it. Several trials to boot it again failed. A few days later, after I had removed and reconnected most parts 2 or 3 times, including the CMOS battary, the laptop finally started up. But the next time (after a regular shutdown) it again didn'st start up. I disconnected the CMOS battary again and and started up the laptop. Then I put it to sleep only but again couldn't start it normally. I tried the same with Hibernate without success. However, a direct restart from within Windows always worked without any problem. Before trying anything more, I downloaded and ran the Lenovo Quick Test software (Diagnostic Tool). At first I ran it online, where no error turned out. Then I ran it two times offline (with a USB stick) by chosing the full test. Have owned Think Pad X220 (NYD2SCX) since January , which worked perfectly till now. Following a completely normal shutdown, the system fails to boot completely. It seems that BIOS is not loading at all, attempts to go to BIOS setup lead to nothing. There is no screen activity at all. After pressing the power button, either the power goes immediately off (following the brief engagement of the hard drive) or stays on with Bluetooth light lit and the fan working, but no hard drive activity. Keyboard not responding to any commands. Not starting up from the Recovery CD either. On one occasion a triple beep was heard (RAM failure?). Please help!

Hey, I posted a question yesterday about USB installation. Since then I found out the following: The problem is not related to the USB, I tried 2 and they both worked on my PC.I tried several image files, they all yield the same results.Tired UEFI and/ or Legacy boot, the same were the results. In the end I did this, as I suspected that there is a problem with the USB controller:http://www.instructables.com/id/Install-Windows-7-without-USB-or-DVD-without-upgra/ But it did not work. Quite simply, in the same case, the directory boots up and then nothing happens. Every time, the installation begins but freezes on the Windows logo then restarts the system. Either from the HDD or the USB, does not matter. Boot settings are all in order, tried AHCI and Compatibility mode for the HDD, the same results. Any ideas what might cause the problem?Would I be able to install a new system with Hiren's boot? x220, i5-2520M Thanks in advance

Hi! So, I had my Lenovo x220 for exactly a week when it decided to stop working on me. It was working perfectly fine one minute, and then I left for a while and came back and pressed the power button because the laptop had gone to sleep... the laptop seemed to start up, but the password screen flickered for a second and then went blank. After trying to re-start the laptop, I decided to let it sit overnight but this morning it still doesn't come on. The backlight is on and the start up screen and password screen flicker on for a second and then go to a blank screen. All the lights flicker on when I start it up, and I think I can even log on! When I type in my password it makes all the starting-up beeps I would expect it to make. This is very aggravating especially as I have only been using the laptop for a week. Any help would be greatly appareciated! I am not tech-savvy at all so keep it simple please!  edit: whups, wrong section... mine is not a tablet...

Hi,I found out that the x220 is compatible with ENHANCED EXPERIENCE 2.0.With this technology (I thinks that are mainly tweaks) the t420s can boot in under 10 seconds (with SSD)Why does my x220 need ~ 20 seconds to boot? (Intel 320 120GB SSD)It doesn't mater if I install "rapidboot" or not. The time won't change. Will it come step by step or will it stay at 20seconds?(I know it is a very good time, but 10 seconds are quiet better )

Answer:Will the x220 ever be able to boot in 10 seconds? (as t420s)

I don't know the exact steps to make your computer boot in 10 seconds and if it's even possible, but to get EE 2.0 you need to use the pre-installed Windows from Lenovo and not a clean install. Also the Intel 320 SSD is SATA 2 unless i'm wrong. With a SATA 3 SSD i guess you should be able to enhance the boot time a bit further. Also there are some settings Intel recommend to turn off when using a Intel SSD. If you install the Intel SSD toolbox you can make this app do these changes for you. I'm also sure there are further Windows tweaks that can be done to make Windows boot faster.

You also have to remember that some applications will make you computer boot slower so a fresh Windows usually boot faster compared to when you have installed all the apps you use. Antivirus is one example that make the computer boot a bit slower and that might differ pretty much depending what antivirus software you use. Also i found some of the Lenovo applications to make the computer boot a bit slower like the fingerprint software. The boot time normally increase when you install applications, but of course some apps do not have any effect on the boot time while others do.

When Lenovo demonstrate a boot in 10 seconds i guess they install Windows with required drivers only and not software that can slow down the boot and maybe they even did a few tweaks. I really don't know and just guessing.

I guess you where hoping for easy fix, but i don't think there is a easy and simple a... Read more

Hello everybody, this will be a confusing post ;-)  Introduction I just got my new X220 4290-W4H with 8GB of RAM and an additional UMTS-card and tried to install an OS on it. Installing Linux using an USB key worked but it wasn't able to boot with grub not beeing able to load stage 2. But since I guess Lenovo will only support you when you are using Windows I continued with the experiments with a Windows 7 x86-64 with SP1 from the MSDN-AA. I also tried using USB sticks instead of a DVD and different variations in the BIOS (UEFI only, legacy only, both, SATA, compatible, ...) but for this post I reset everything to the default.  Preparation To have a clean starting point I reset the BIOS to the defaults by using the corresponding load-function in the last screen. In addition I attached the internal harddrive to another Linux computer and nulled the first and the last GB of the HDD. So nothing of interest (no mbr, no partition table, no gpt) is on it.  First boot with "new" HDD To have some kind of reference, I first started the computer with the HDD inserted only filled with zeros and the lenovo external DVD writer attached by USB. There the aforementioned Windows 7 x86-64 SP1 DVD was inserted. A new CMOS battery would certainly be a cheap fix and is worth a try, but normally if the CMOS batters dies it just will not save the BIOS settings, however, I have heard people who said a dead CMOS battery prevented their system from booting up until they replaced it, and described having no problem with Start >> Shutdown >> Restarts, while turning the system off and back on failed similar to what you describe.    The "Me is in recovery state" is also BIOS related (corruption) so I would follow the advice on replacing the CMOS battery if I were you. If you have a multimeter, you could also check the battery for voltage, which should be 3v DC when new, and any battery reading less the 2v DC probably should be replaced. .     It is very unlikely that RAM is the issue, and I doubt that your system board has gone bad since it was booting intermittently just fine until you left it off for an extended period. Good Luck,

Hello, I have a Lenovo X220 that won't boot from USB Flash Drive. Have tried multiple USB sticks, prepared as bootable in multiple ways. They boot on other PCs, including a T400. But won't even show on F12 boot list on the X220. arneu,1. be sure usb driver is up to date and usb ports work within OS2. try to make Lenovo Recovery media from Advanced mode of Lenovo Rescue & Recovery tool. You'll get bootable stick with WinPE environment. Test the boot process. Or you can make Recovery stick from OS3. you can make bootable media in Lenovo Factory Disks application. It'll consist WinRE environment. Test with that.4. there is a scenario to force bootable stick preparation using diskpart command. Let to tell about that later.

gacksen, welcome to the forum,

did you image the SSD with it inserted in your X220 or attached to another system externally or internally before inserting it into your X220?

If the answer is that it wasn't inserted in the X220 when you imaged it, please try again with it inserted.

You may want to re-think imaging the drive and opt for a clean install; see here and here.

Hello, i spilled water on my keyboard. at first my x220 continued working without any issues but i took the opportunity to take off all the keys and whipe it clean. my computer was in standby at this time. after reinstalling all the keys i intended to start my system and it refuses to boot.  while reinstalling the keys i noticed that the display "flashed up"  once what apperead to me as if the computer was switching from standby to hibernating mode. it did this as i was applying pressure to put the left shift key, being just above the vga slot. when i know press the power button it starts blinking a few times but the screen stays black, no further reaction. if i take out and replace the battery and press the power button, the screen flashes up shortley as it did while replacing the keys of the keyboard and it does so showing a few colored vertical stripes. what can be the problem here? will it be due to possibly entered water (are they not supposed to be spill resistant) or might i have squeezed the graphics adapter or other sort of hardware when reinstalling the keys? is there anything i can do now? hooking the x220 up to an external monitor doesnt help either. the external screen stays black and the system still does not boot; thanks for any help. unfortunately i will not be close to any lenovo dealership for support for the next few weeks as there arent any in northern chile.

Hi there Lenovo SMEs! My wife's X220 is having an intermittent problem that recently has become much more frequent. After hitting the power button, the system seems to boot fine (showing the Lenovo & then windows screens)...but then the system will only show a black screen. We used to be able to simply hit the power button to fix the issue, but that workaround is not seeming to work as well. We have tried hitting the ThinkVantage button and running the system diagnostic, but it doesn't find any known issues. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Hello, It's my first post, so welcome . I've been a lenovo thinkpad user for a month - X220 with SSD, W7 Professional, umts module and extended battery (if more information is needed I can send the full description) - and a strange bug occurs to my new laptop sometimes. After pressing the power button most of controls (camera, speaker mute, microphone mute) always make a flash. Next, most of the times (80-90%) the thinkpad logo shows up and the Windows 7 boots - that's ok. Unfortunately, about one in ten trials end in getting a black screen just after the flashes of the controls. The screen is enabled - it is just black. I must disable laptop (I don't have to keep the power button long - simple pressing is enough), and then, the second trial always succeed. It only occurs during the fresh, full boot - I didn't notice it after restarts, back from sleep or hibernation. I use docking stations, but it occurs in both ways - with or without docking station. It's not a huge problem to ignore that issue, but I'm worried that it may result in a more serious problem in the future. Any ideas and help will be appreciated. --Best regards,Krzysztof

Answer:X220 Tablet 4296-2YU Performance issue with strange Event viewer warning

Lenovo 42962WU upgraded to 8gb of RAM here, Hi, I have experienced the same general slowness; very annoying. Thank you for checking the Event Viewer, didn't think of it.I have the exact same event listed; I googled it ("kernel processor power event 37", first result), turns out it's got to do with which power plan you're on; one that favourites too low of a performance bottlenecks the CPU, resulting in horribly low performance. The problem seems to completely go away when on a high performance power plan. I am fairly sure of which specific power settings to change, wouldn't mind confirmation though.Go to Power Manager in Advanced mode, to your favourite power saving plan and toggle System settings > System performance & CPU Deeper Sleep.

This is driving me crazy! I have an X220 with Windows 8 and UEFI boot installed. It all started when I first installed Windows 8 a few months ago which required me to update my BIOS to the latest version. The installation process often got stuck when booting from the Installation CD (the round circle stopped spinning, the display was at full brightness). Eventually I managed to boot into the Installer (when the boot logo doesn't get stuck, the display is then dimmed to minimum). I was quite happy to have a superfast lightweight OS which booted in an instant.. When suddenly it started to get stuck when booting (same issue with the boot logo not spinning anymore). This happens quite randomly, but I often manage to boot (maybe 2-3 times a week, I don't boot often though..). Now, the booting hangs are less of an issue for me but more often that that it fails to resume from sleep. The LEDs flash and then it instantly drops to sleep mode again (well at least the sleep/moon LED is active). This happens quite often as I sleep/resume up to 5-10 times a day (changing lecture rooms, meeting rooms, save battery when the lectures are boring, ...) Now after researching and spending hours in debugging this issue, it seems that I'm not the only one having this (or a similar) issue, but often without any definitive solution being specified. This is what I have already tried:* Upgrade BIOS and SSD firmware to latest* Install/update latest drivers* Mess around with BIOS opti... Answer:X220 resume from sleep and boot issues

Hi, Fabio

If you haven't already, I would try doing a refresh of Windows 8. This is a function new to Windows 8 that will repair and refresh the operating system without affecting files. It may be able to find this problem and fix it. To do this, open the Charms Bar, and select Settings. At the bottom of this window, you will see something that says Change PC Settings. It doesn't look like a link, but it is. From here, go to General and scroll all the way to the bottom to find Refresh.

Hope it helps,Adam

I recently bought an x220 i5-2520 and installed an intel 310 80GB ssd.I cloned C: using the intel Acronis tools, updated all drivers and firmware and all works well. However, my boot times are over 1 minute - much less than the 20-40 seconds I see posted on the web.I have cleaned out a lot of unnecessary items from startup using msconfig, but no major difference. It seems to me that most of the slowdown is happening after the login. It takes around 30 seconds after that to get to the desktop. Why are my boots 2-3x slower than others?

Answer:x220 with Intel 310 ssd slow boot times

From my experience, you are always going to get the best results from doing a fresh install.  I put a fresh copy of  Win7pro 64 on my Vertex2 SSD and my boot times are <15 seconds.  There must be some conflicting service, program etc. that is taking a long time to load or maybe the cloan messed something up.  It is tough to say for certain what it is but a fresh install is always good measure.  You can check Task manager and see if anything is using up a lot of processing power / memory as a start. ~Novak

Hey everyone.Recently had some fan errors, so I followed advice on here actually to replace it. Today I replaced the fan and took care in reassembling the rest of the laptop. However, now when I boot it up the screen stays as black and backlit as if it was perpetually loading windows. I can hear windows 7 boot up, as well as a few Apps start. I can also change the brightness of this backlit screen with function keys and such.I checked the connections where I had previously disconnected the display several times and they're sound. Any one have any tips? The fan works fine now, but I created another problem in solving my first one.thanks!

Answer:X220: Blank, backlit screen on boot

Hi Dodecalypse,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

Did you check with connecting External display & reseating the RAM?
Check performing power drain by removing the AC power adapter & battery after that hold the power button for 30 seconds perform this step for 2 or more times.

Hope this helps.

Best regards,
Hemanth Kumar

Everybody--New to this foruml, so I don't know if this solution was already mentioned, but..... My x220 wouldn't boot this morning; it kept going to the prompt indicating the the drive isn't working or wasn't recognized (I forget the wording).  But I read somewhere that the SSD may just be loose.  So, I flipped the laptop over, removed the one screw holding the plastic cover for drives then the cover itself, slid out the SSD then slid it back in again firmly.  It booted right up like nothing ever happened!  And here I was planning to bring it to a repair place and possibly having to replace the whole machine! Hope this helps anybody else with this or a similar boot problem. Cheers,GeraldoX220

Lenovo came and replaced my mother board (great service, btw). The problem returnde however. Sometimes when I reboot, the system completely hangs. The lights go on, the hard drive starts to spin and then stops. The screen is completely blank though you can see it is backlit. Nothing is happening.

The culprit? Motorola DROID plugged into any of the USB ports. As soon as I unplug the DROID the boot sequence moves along just fine.

No offence but seriously, you called for a motherboard-replacement before even trying to unplug any periferal that could be interfering?

I have Lenovo X220 and whenever I try booting it up with my external harddrive attached, it does not get past the initial bootup screen.  When I turn off the computer, unplug the drive, and turn the computer back on, it works perfectly.  I've tried plugging the external HD back in after the computer is on and it works perfectly too.  I've tried going into the BIOS and putting the internal hitachi drive as first in the boot priority, but it still does not work. I have noticed though that sometimes it does allow me to boot with the external HD attached, only if the computer was shut down previously with the external HD attached. Is there any way for me to boot the laptop with the external HD attached even if it was not attached prior to the previous shutdown?

Answer:X220 Won't Boot with External Harddrive Connected

Try the following:

Start BIOS-setup
select Startup - Boot
deactivate "USB-HDD" as boot device  with the key "x"
save changes and exit.

Maybe it might help.

We have ran into the same recurring issue with the x220 and x230's. We are running windows 7 pro 64bit, and on a consistent  basis we have boot up issues, were windows gets stuck after the bios. The computer needs to be rebooted several times for it to fully boot up. Our users do have docking stations as well, anyone else having this issue?

I have a two month old X220 with SSD i7, and to my shock, the laptop 2 days ago after the lid was closed in the bag and I pulled it out, there was only a flsh of light and the figerprint sensor that turn on but nothing boots up on the screen. After leaving it on the power adapter for an hour it booted up fine.  But the unexpected happened today and the latptop no longer even boots up or lights up anyore.  Completely dead!! The main question I have is did anyone experience the same and what was done to fix this?  But more importantly to Lenovo what kind of image and reputation are you building for yourself in trying to produce such laptops with such incredible fault that seems to be a major hardware issue for the most expensive lineup of your Thinkpads??

I just planned to buy x220. It's ideal for my purposes, except one thing...
I'm not using Windows or any DRM-based system and I don't like Linuxes,...but  anyway I realy need secure booting. I prefer eSATAp stick, for OS installation. It fast and it's easy to change the drive... My plan was to buy ExpressCard eSATAp converter, interfaced to PCIe bus, but...
I've read some treads on this forum and found that it's impossible to boot from anything on lenovo's laptop or even server %((( I'm very disappointed!!! I've found one more debilism (aka DRM) from Lenovo - it's device white-listing, so one want to ask somebody from lenovo's stuff - what do you think you do?

Answer:Boot Option for PCIe (PCI Express) Card on X220?

Hello,

It looks like the X220 model with the i7-2620M CPU also comes with USB 3.0 support; you might want to consider using that instead of eSATAp.  I know the W510 has an eSATAp power, but it is a much larger system than the X220.

Hi, some weeks ago, there was a bios update coming, that fixed the boot time of the X220 in combination with msata-ssds in the umts-port (in my case a Intel 310). When I'm starting the laptop itself, this issue is fixed for me. But if it is connected to the docking station, it still takes ages to boot. Is there anything I can do? Or is this still a known issue (and does Lenovo know about it)? Thanks,Martin

Answer:X220 with docking station and Intel 310 still takes ages to boot

hey uwcct, curious to know, when you have the x220 connected to the docking station; is there any peripherals added to it? such as an external harddrive, mouse, keyboard, etc ?if there is, could you remove all of those and try again. For we believe it is this added peripherals that is connected to the docking station is causing the slow down.why? it is because windows is busy loading up the drivers for the devices that is connected to it.

Hello - Whenever I try to boot my X220 tablet when an external hard drive is plugged in, it won't boot. It gives the lenovo screen and then just goes to a blank screen. I have installed the latest bios update but still no luck. This seems pretty silly to me. I need this to work. Any thoughts or help would be appreciated! THanks! Scott

Answer:X220 Tablet won't boot when external hard drive is plugged in

Try hitting F12 at the ThinkPad BIOS splash screen and choosing the internal drive (HDD0?). If this works, then go into BIOS and move the internal drive's boot priority above USB HDD.Also, does your external drive happen to have a bootloader on it?

EDIT: I assume you want the system to boot into the internal drive with the external attached, rather than boot onto a system on the external drive.

I have X220 and Ultrabase 3. External USB HDD (WD Passport) is connect to one of Ultrabase USB ports. When I reboot and press F12 to get the boot menu there are two strange click (or scratch) noises coming out of the external HDD. One click before the menu appears and second after boot device (CD drive) is selected. I tried different HDD with the same result. It loooks like a short power drop or so but it happens with the boot menu only. The first external HDD I used for three years is damaged now, don't know whether it is connected with this issue. BIOS version 1.38, no USB 3 port. I found the issue is specific to Ultrabase USB ports. When the same external HDD is connected directly to notebook USB port, it is fine. I use the Ultrabase setup for booting from Acronis TrueImage bootable CD to create backups. Anyone has similar issue ? Is possible to use the notebook USB port when it is docked in Ultrabase ?
