X230 Ultranav Trackpoint not scrolling with middle...

Question: X230 Ultranav Trackpoint not scrolling with middle...

Hello there, I have an issue with UltraNav TrackPoint while trying to scroll using the middle button. It seems Windows 10 are ignoring the middle button completely. Iīve tryied the solution I found here with the registry, but with no luck. I remember the scrolling worked only for like two days after I purchased this repassed X230 tablet. After all the automatic Windows updates it stopped working. I tried uninstalling the driver and downloading fresh lenovo new one, but nothing... can someone here please help me? This issue is really annoying, otherwise I love the X230 tablet!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Trackpoint + dragging is still not working with the Ultranav middle button as of 16.2.19.2 driver. It's an extremely important function for any 3D graphics program. With the Lenovo driver it's not possible to use the middle button + trackpoint to navigate in these programs! Lenovo, please fix this bug. It's working perfectly if I install the latest Synaptics driver. It's only happening with Lenovo's driver. Using Synaptics driver is not an option, because it has no guard against keyboard typing + touchpad accidental clicking. Test:Testing is very easy.1. Set your middle button behaviour to "None".2. Above an empty area of your desktop, click the middle button + try to move the mouse pointer with your trackpoint. The pointer isn't moving! It's the same thing what happens in any 3D graphics program! You cannot navigate your camera, unless you use an external mouse! Fix:Please fix it. Just don't stop the trackpoint pointer when someone clicks the middle button in "None" settings. System: Using a W520 for the reference.

Answer:Trackpoint + middle button dragging still not working in Ultranav 16.2.19.2 driver

I am not a professional CAD user, but I too want to be able to use the middle button as if it were a normal mouse. There is a lot of software that utilize the middle mouse button and can't handle the silly scroll feature. Did you find a work around? You mentioned something about Synaptics.

I'm using the ultranav middle button to scroll (I live for this feature which is why I've been buying thinkpads since time immemorial) However, on the t460, scolling with the middle button/nubbin is painfully slow in Word 2007, and Adobe Acrobat/Reader is a nightmare. In Word its just slow and you have to use a lot of pressure on the nubbin (there appears to be no setting to change this). In Acrobat, it's agonizingly slow (in both Reader and Pro) and will "stick" on if you try to go to fast and just scrolling for multiple seconds after you release the button.  Stragely, the trackpad scrolling works fine in Word, though it is still bad in Acrobat.  In addition, the middle button scrolling will frequently slip and stop scrolling, sending the pointer to the bottom of the page.  Nubbin/middle button scrolling works (oddly) extremely well in Microsoft Edge... Please help! Middle button scrollig with the nubbin is the best feature on these machines.  Using: T460 Windows 10 64-bit with the latest drivers.

Hello, Is there a way to have both - scrolling with trackpoint while holding the middle mouse button - and - being able do a middle click with the middle mouse button? I can accomplish this easily under Linux like it is described here. But under Windows it seems to be impossible. I can only have either middle clicking or trackpoint scrolling. I need both.  If anyone knows a solution to this please let me know. Walter (I have a X200s and Windows 7 x64 installed)

Answer:Trackpoint scrolling AND middle clicking

Yeah, this is easy in Linux can't we get some pressure to actually get this implemented properly in windows. Useability is the main reason i got a thinkpad it would be nice to know we could actually influence it in some way. (Bumping an old topic here)

I just want to report that the newest touchpad driver brakes native windows middle-click scrolling. What I'm talking is this:1. Swich off all advanced features in the TouchPoint setting to get back a middle button. BTW, how on earth it is possible that the default setting "steals" the middle button. Going for the Nr. 1. PC maker and forgetting a stupid default settings in a Synaptics driver is a joke.  2. Now, try scrolling in any native windows application like Chrome, Firefox, etc. The quick way of scrolling is to push the middle button while scrolling. It had always worked before. Now this way is broken. Now, the only way for scrolling is to the:1. push middle button to enter scolling mode2. move mouse3. push again to exit scrolling mode This scolling mode has never been a good way to scroll, but the quick way is broken with the latest driver. I'm using a W520 with Windows 7, 64-bit. Broken driver: Version 16.2.5.0

I have a similar problem as the OP: after today's update, my Touchpad is not functioning properly anymore. Scrolling of any sort on the Touchpad seems to have been disabled. As I do not have a mouse attached, I am forced to use the Trackpoint set's middle button and then move my cursor around to scroll. I checked my Control Panel settings and both two-finger and single-finger Touchpad scrolling are enabled via the settings. Also I don't know if this is relevant, but it seems like the option to double-tap to bring up Lenovo SimpleTap has also randomly been disabled... W530, Windows 7 x64.

Touchpad doesn't respond, and when I press trackpoint middle button it acts as a mouse wheel (opens links in a new tab, scrolls only if I press it on the empty space) or sometimes doesn't work at all. I had drivers for ps/2 mouse and keyboard installed , if I try to install drivers from lenovo site, I get an error : Synaptics device not found!

At certain relatively slow speeds the scrolling jumps huge leaps regularly (probably after evey page or so). It's very bad with Chrome and Windows explorer, not so bad but noticeable in Thunderbird. I have set the scrolling to 1 line. My Synaptics drivers are the newest 10/04/2015. Also the treshold to start scrolling with middle button and trackpoint is very high - can't be that hard to make it smooth, so you could scroll very slowly? Please fix this soon... it's impossible to live with.

Hi, Problem occurs after waking from sleep or standby or hibernate, and alternatively  or right click on ultranav right button (it opens context menu). Then my left click is disabled. The cursor is either frozen or not. For the freeze there seems to be no rule, but the left click is always disabled. I have formatted the windows, installed new drivers and utility programs and also new bios. The same problem occurs every time.I have Windows 7 x64 I have seen many posts for issues with TP trackpoints and trackpads, but no resolution as of yet. On my L420, i had it set so i can move the mouse with my thumb and scroll with my index finger with the center trackpoint button.

However, the Ultranav options are different for the W541, so, (as far as i can tell) i can't find the option to replicate this.

See screenshots of my configuration.

Basically, i want my center trackpoint button to be always in "scroll" mode, without the need to press the middle button and scroll like on the L420.

I have an IBM T40 laptop. I have been having problems with the mouse properties. I opened up the advanced properties for the mouse and selected the UltraNav tab. I keep selecting the "Standard Scroll" option but it never stays. It keeps doing the smooth scrolling. For some reason, after my laptop has been on for a while, I can get the standard scroll option to stay. But then after a while longer it reverts back by itself. It usually happens when something disrupts my wireless internet connection. I have downloaded all the latest drivers that I could find from the IBM website. What is messing this up?

I just got a new T61p running Vista business and was configuring the look & feel of it related to the trackpoint.  I completed all of the normal 'first time setup' chores; registration, software & driver updates, user definition and savepoint. I went to the Control Panel,  Hardware & Sound, Mouse, Mouse Properties/UltraNav panel.  Once there, I played around with the TrackPoint by: clicking the TrackPoint Settings buttonselecting the Magnifying Glass optionclicking the Choose Scrolling or Magnifying Glass Function Settings buttonselecting the Large Size Magnifying Glass optionclicking the Ok buttonclicking the Apply button on TrackPoint Propertiesclicking the Ok button on TrackPoint Propertiesselecting the Use advanced features only - the Magnifying Glass feature didn't seem to work when the 'pointing device' option was enabledclicking the Apply button on UltraNav I was then able to use the TrackPoint as a roving Magnifying Glass, which was a 'neat' feature that quickly became unusable.  (Normal typing lead to frequent brushes of the TrackPoint which caused the Magnifying Glass to pop up when & where I didn't want it, etc.) I tried to undo the feature by resetting it to a Scrolling only with 'Use as pointing device with advanced features' setting - clicking Apply/Ok as needed - but to no avail.  The TrackPoint didn't resume it's 'pointing device' functionality. I then reset it to M... For some reason randomly when I turn on my computer after it gets done loading Windows XP (gets to the log in menu) my T60 ThinkPad Laptop's mouse will no longer work.  After I restart it then it seems to work fine.  I can't find any specific drivers for it to download to try and resolve this issue either.  Any ideas? Also, this laptop was used by someone before me and they formatted the harddrive so I lost my ThinkVantage restore stuff so I can't restore the laptop to its factory settings.  Is there a place I can download that or at least set it up by hand? I am hoping if I have that option it will fix the mouse issue as well.  Thanks!

Answer:T60 UltraNav and TrackPoint not working after boot up

Hello, please go to Lenovo support page. And download MS NET 2.0 and System Updater. First I would suggest to update only your ultranav driver, for trackpoint and touchpad. But donīt update all at once and be aware, also bios updates, which may be not necessary are offered there. If you are in warranty till now, try to call Lenovo hotline and they might send you the R&R discs for free.Otherwise you have to pay.  Message Edited by Agotthelf on 02-12-2008 08:16 AM

Got a strange one on my X201T.  For some reason I can't fathom, my laptop's Trackpoint, Touchpad and all their associated buttons do not work when I log into my laptop - they did before but in the last few days, they've stopped.  My external USB still works fine when connected. However, if, for example, I do 'ctrl-alt-del' and lock the laptop, they start working again until the moment I'm logged back in.  Also, If I log in on a Guest account, they all work fine!  This suggests it's not the hardware, I think. I've looked at the Control Panel / Mouse dialogue and the options under the UltraNav tab are all greyed out - but they are not on the Guest account.  Somehow, my user account on the laptop is not allowing me to use the Trackpoint, etc. My external USB mouse works fine in all accounts, btw. I'm running Windows 7 64-bit.  I've updated drivers through Lenovo update (though none seemed related to this problem). Any thoughts how I can fix this?

Hi, I just purchased a SL500 from Lenovo. The UltraNav (TrackPoint and TouchPad) is not working. I have installed the drivers via the Lenovo website but still not working. I have always done all the windows updates, and Thinkvantage system updates, but still no joy.  I also installed the UtraNav Utility (which does not even show up under Thinkvantge after installation). Fn+F8 brings up the Mouse properties box, but there is no tab for the UltraNav device etc. I want to try a possible resolution via this forum before contacting Lenovo support. Thanks for your assistance! ***lenovo SL500, Vista Business 32***

Answer:SL500 - UltraNav (TrackPoint and TouchPad) not working

Installing drivers from lenovo website was kind of tricky for me, initially. All I used to do was to run the setup.exe file; until someone told me that the drivers gets extracted in another folder in C:\. The installation instructions are given on lenovo website, make certain you are not making the same mistake like me:- http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-70341.html Else, I fancy the keyboard might have gone bad, contact lenovo in that case. Hope it helps.

"ActionType"=dword:00000000
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Synaptics\SynTPEnh\ZoneConfig\TouchPadPS2\Top Edge Pull]
"ActionType"=dword:00000000 just paste this to a notepad file and save it as something.reg and restart.I still don't know how to make the middle button close tabs, open new tabs and smooth scroll.

I have two users with X230 Tablets and recently the Ultranav would stop working - seemingly randomly and occasionally. I upgraded both users to the most recent version of the BIOS and UltraNav driver - version 16.2.19.13 - and the issue has actually become worse. I've disabled/enabled, uninstalled, reinstalled and the issues keep coming back. I can get the UltraNav working - but after undocking (following the proper undocking procedure), closing the lid, the tablet going to sleep and hibernating - the UltraNav TrackPoint and TouchPad both become disabled. Interestingly, before the user logs in - both the TrackPoint and TouchPad will both work, then disable again as soon as the user logs in and the options for UltraNav are completely greyed out until I uninstall and re-install the driver. I'm at a loss.

After some recent UltraNav driver updates I have lost cursor and use of the trackpad and trackpoint. The yellow triangle shows up in device manager as the drivers cannot identify the hardware. I've tried uninstall/reinstall and rolling back to older drivers to no avail. This happened originally after an update on 1/26. I had to uninstall drivers, cleaned registrty keys, ran windows update, ran TVSU to reinstall drivers and that worked for a week. Then another update pushed on 2/9 knocked out the Trackpad again.  The device in enabled in both the control panel and BIOS. Disable/Reboot/Enable did not work. Rollback of drivers to 2 or 3 previous versions did not work. Thankfully I have the touch screen or my 15 month old T440 would be entirely useless. Anyone have similar issues and/or solution??

Hi there, I have a weird problem. First, I am running Windows 7 beta (build 7100) on my T60 (type 2007), so that could be the reason, and I assume it's probably software related in any case. But anyway, in case some of you have experience with the problem, here goes. The other day the mouse buttons on my UltraNav, for no apparant reason, stopped functioning. The trackpoint is working fine as is the middle scroll-button and the touchpad. But I can't left or right-click. Both the buttons above and below the touchpad are gone. Pretty weird, as the upper mouse buttons are connected through the keyboard-connector-cable and the touchpad and the buttons below that are connected via a seperate cable. I've checked the settings in the UltraNav tab and they're ok, and I'm using the latest driver (9137), and have tried reinstalling it.No luck. Any ideas - besides reinstalling/downgrading Windows, which I'll probably do anyway if nothing else helps?

I have a Thinkpad X230 Tablet.  The trackpoint and touchpad have stopped working.  This just happened today, after about six months of use.  When I boot the machine, I can move the mouse cursor for a few seconds, but then it stops.  I don't see any error messages.  The Ultranav panel in the mouse control panel applet shows the controls for both trackpoint and touchpad greyed out--they can't be clicked on, and the "enabled" boxes are not checked.  The device manager says that the device is working.  If I try to update the driver, I'm told it is up to date.  If I uninstall the driver and reboot, the trackball and touchpad work, but they seem to be using generic drivers--the ultranav panel does not show in the mouse applet.  I'm told to reboot to complete installation.  However, if I do that, I'm back to square one, with the ultranav not working.  I checked the boot configuration, and it shows both the trackpoint and touchpad as enabled.

If that doesn't work then I would assume it's a hardware problem.

Hey so I have a new x230 tablet and both my mouse (red button) and the ultranav have disabled themselves and are greyed out in the control pannel-> mouse window. Only the pen works. I know that in the x220 this problem could be fixed by hitting FN + F8, but that is not an option in x230 where that controls brightness. What is the solution here? I grabbed the 5/2011 drivers for UltraNav from the Lenovo site and it appears that an option 'to disable the integrated pointing devices when an external pointing device is present' does not exist, or at the very least I can't easily find it.  Please please please please tell me I'm simply being dense and this behavior is very easy to enable. Seriously, the 5-year old Dell drivers I had with my old machine did that, and this is driving me BONKERS. Alternatively, if what I'm doing here is feature-requesting, I'd be like 50% there if I could Fn+F8 and have an option to kill both the touchpad and the trackpoint - alas, I can disable 1 or the other BUT NOT BOTH WITH THAT OPTION.  Can I really not disable both? Lenovo W520, Windows 7 Professional 64-bit.

Answer:Option to disable UltraNav (touchpad + trackpoint) when external mouse is connected

I've never seen such a feature with the UltraNav drivers. You could just max out the PalmCheck and then set it to touchpad only.

Hi all, I have a problem with my Thinkpad Edge S430. After reinstalling Windows 7, System update and all drivers, my trackpoint doesn't work. Itīs disabled and there is no way of getting it to work. I have unistalled, cleaned the registry and reinstalled the driver from the official driver web page, from within system update,... no way.  The other problem is with the SD Reader. I use a 32Gb SD card for backup purposes and a week ago simply itīs like the reader does not exist anymore. The devide administrator does have all drivers installed, but the reader is not working (of course, I have checked that the card is working and with all data in other PC). I have also unistalled and installed the driver, but again no way. Any help is really welcome. Thanks in advance,

Answer:Ultranav trackpoint not working, SD reader vanished. Thinkpad EDGE S430

Hi, petodow

For the TrackPoint issue, I would try installing the Synaptics driver from here. Synaptics is the company that makes UltraNav, so there shouldn't be any loss of functionality.

As for the SD card reader, there is a BIOS update that was released five days ago that may help. The update can be found here.

Hope it helps,
Adam

Hi, If i move the bar all the way to Firm Touch the scrolling works just fine. But as soon as i put it on 3rd position or move it further more to the Light Touch, then the scrolling goes just too fast, it's really hard to control it, if you want to scroll like - half the page in google chrome. So my question is how to fix this? How to lower the sensitivity of the scroll?  If i change the number of lines to be scrolled with 1 scroll, nothing happens. Best regards.Tastro

Answer:How to lower the scroll speed for the middle UltraNav button? (X230t)

Hi, Tastro

Have you ensured that you are running the latest BIOS and version of the UltraNav driver? I just tested the scrolling with the TrackPoint on an X230 and didn't find controlling the speed too difficult. It could be that the driver is either out of date or could be having issues. In either case, I would recommend either an update or a reinstalltion, depending on the current version. Both the BIOS and the UltraNav driver can be found here.

Best,
Adam

I recently installed Windows 8 on my Thinkpad X220, and downloaded the latest Ultranav drivers from the Lenovo support website. In prior versions of these drivers (which I have used under Windows XP and Windows 7) it was possible to set the middle mouse button to do something other than scroll - I used to set it to act as a third mouse button as this is quite handy for tab management in web browsers. However, in the latest drivers, this option appears to be missing, I can only adjust sensitivity and set 'tap to click' options. I tried using the older driver which was intended for Windows 7 only, but this seemed to cause some problems with Windows 8 such as high CPU usage when the system was idle. Does anyone know how to get these options back with the new drivers?

Answer:Windows 8 Ultranav driver and middle mouse button settings

Ugh a thousand times this. In the previous version of the drivers on Windows 7, you could disable the scroll/zoom functions on the TrackPoint middle button so you could use it as Middle Mouse Click, but that option seems to have been removed in the latest version on Windows 8, which is EXTREMELY frustrating. At the moment I'm using the tap zones as a bit of a work-around, but I really want middle click back.

Hi,While docked yesterday, I downloaded the latest ThinkVantage Updates  using the System Update Utility for my T61 2009-AD1.  After applying the updates, the system rebooted and my TP stick was very SLOW as I keep it on the fastest settings to reduce hand stress.   When I went into the control panel --> mouse, it tells me: "Unable to connect to the Synaptics Pointing Device Driver"   If you have installed another PS/2 Pointing Device Driver, please uninstall the Synaptics driver by clicking on the Yes button.  You then need to reinstall your pointing device driver for the external device again.  Do you want to uninstall the Synaptics Driver Now? I had an external USB TrackPoint Keyboard connected to the dock and have never had any problems from the UltraNav or the Updates.   Generally, there were two UltraNav tabs in the Mouse Panel, one for the onboard TP and one for the Ultranav USB Keyboard.. Now there's only one "Synaptics" tab which is all hozed up.  I cannot change the sensitivity of the mouse etc.. I've tried to uninstall the Synaptics Drive via Add/Remove Programs - it will not uninstall, it just hangs the Thinkpad to 100% CPU and sits there.  I've tried rolling back the driver in device manager, it refuses to rollback. I've tried reinstalling the older Ultranav driver and it complains that a newer driver is installed, use add/remove programs to remove the newer dri... T510 4313-CTO, Windows 7 Pro, 128G SSD, 3G RamUltranav version 15.0.24.0, 06/23/2010 I have had the touchpad scrolling function working in the past, and turned it off a few months ago due to slightly erratic functioning, in that it would start scrolling at times I didn't want it to.Today I decided that I missed using it and went to re-enable it by cheching the box in Control Panel / Mouse / UltraNav / Touch Pad / Settings /  Scrolling / One Finger Scrolling. I then went to adjust the  Scrolling Region  but it is grayed out. I tried checking and unchecking the "Enable One Finger Scrolling" box, clicking "Apply", rebooting the PC, etc multiple times.A search on the forum only returned issues with scrolling not working with some programs, but nothing related to this. The Edge Motion region box is also greyed out. I then logged in as Administrator (I'm the only user on this PC) and  the scrolling region can be adjusted there, just like I used to be able to do when logged in as a standard user. Thanks in advance!

I just recently purchased a SL410 and am running Windows 7 Pro 32 Bit. I have a problem with one finger and two finger scrolling. I have updated the drivers for the Touchpad. But The scrolling works sometimes then sometimes it works and then stops working while scrolling. I have tried turning off single and/or two finger scrolling. But it does not work. I have even changed the Touchpad sensitivity but it does not work. I was thinking of trying the driver on the Synaptics site but did not know if that would work. If anyone has any other suggestions that would be great.

I have a T510 that I got a  couple of months ago, and I have been using the Trackpoint middle button for scrolling in Firefox, until a couple of days ago when this feature  inexplicably stopped working. I've tried restarting my computer, making sure the Trackpoint settings are set to enable scrolling, updating my drivers, but nothing seems to be able to bring it back. Has anyone else had problem like this (where the Trackpoint scrolling unexpectedly stops working) or know of any other reasons for why it would stop working?

Are the processes SynTPEnh.exe, SynTPHelper.exe, and SynTPLpr.exe running? Advanced UltraNav features fail to work if these aren't running. You may have disabled them in MSConfig or another startup program cleaner. Does hitting the middle button trigger the conventional middle mouse button?

I am not a fan of the new "clickpad", I'm a long time ThinkPad user so my pointing device of choice is the Trackpoint (eraser).  I've set the control panel on this for "Trackpoint Only", and at least the virtual buttons are useable now.  HOWEVER... the "middle button" seems to be stuck in only the "scroll" mode.  The latest control panel doesn't seem to have an option to set it as "normal middle button" - it is just doing this scrolling thing.  I would like to set the middle click action to a regular "middle click", not scrolling.  Anyone know if there is a registry key or some other way to do this, and not the scrolling thing? Thanks!

Question: x230 trackpoint

Hey,sometimes when I move my pointer somwhere and then release trackpoint the pointer goes a little bit backwards. Can it be fixed?Regards

Answer:x230 trackpoint

TrackPoint drift has been happening as long as I can remember, at least back to the X31.  Release the trackpoint, and it may drift towards the top left.  If you let it drift, it stops after a few seconds and after that works properly.  At least for me this happens infrequently enough so as not to be a big deal.

I just got a T500 to replace my dead R51. One of the things I really liked about my old Thinkpad was that I could use the middle trackpoint button as a third mouse button, which is great for opening links in new tabs in Firefox or copy/pasting in console windows. However as far as I can tell the only options in the mouse configuration are "Scroll", "Zoom", and "Neither", and neither just disables the button entirely. I should mention I'm using Windows Vista. Does anybody know how to fix this?

Add this: ; iTunes*,*,itunes.exe,*,*,*,WheelStd,0,9 to the tp4table.dat file under the pass 0 section.  It's located in C:\Program Files\Synaptics.  Do the same for Lightroom, using whatever the .exe file is for Lightroom.

Hi,I am used from my t500 to click and hold middle button on the Ultranav and move up and down with the touchpad to scroll up and down. However, this does not work on my t510 anymore. At least it does work sometimes for some seconds in google chrome; but just for some short moments. The default behaviour is, that when i'm clicking the middle button the scroll symbol in form of a little scrollbar appears. I can then scroll by using the trackpoint, but not by using the touchpad. Using the touchpad has just the effekt, that the symbol disappears.Sometimes another symbol appears; its the symbol with the arrows pointing in all direktions. Only when this symbol appears i am able to scroll by moving on the touchpad. Now i am looking for a solution to my problem.by the way: when i use the trackpoint, the touchpad is locked for some seconds. Is there a way to disable this? Best Greets, matthias.

When using a wheel mouse with SketchUp, pressing the wheel allows to orbit the drawing. But when I use the trackpoint, pressing the middle button zooms in/out. How can I change the behavior to be like a wheel mouse? I found a software bug for synaptics driver.  I am using the latest: 18.0.7.40, 5/26/2014, windows 8.1. The bug is related to unreliable middle clicking (not to be confused with TpScroll ), when the user middle clicks on the trackpoint, the OS doesn't register it.  It is possible this is a settings issue, maybe it's a "feature".  If so, can someone provide instructions on how to change it. It seems the synaptics firmware will only pass a middle click to OS if the pointer moves at the same time.  I have not tried this on Linux. To reproduce errant behavior I (this will NOT register a middle click)1. make sure middle clicks are enabled in the mouse properties and TpScroll is off2. make sure you have an application that works with middle click or displays L/M/R click state received by the OS (I am using X-Mouse button control)3. with finger clear of trackpoint, middle click with thumb4. I usually use the trackpoint(red button on keyboard, I think it's called the trackpoint) to move the cursor, and use the buttons below it to click. When I first got the computer (An R60), the middle button below the spacebar was a great way to scroll, but then one day it stopped working. Whenever I would push the middle button, the trackpoint would freeze and only scroll (The buttons on either side of it still worked though.). The only way I could move the cursor was by the touchpad or by turning the computer off and starting it back up. I tried going into the mouse settings and fixing this, double-clicking the middle button when it froze to see if it would stop, but nothing worked. I finally gave up on it, but I thought I might ask here to see if anybody can help me. Does anyone have a solution to this?

The middle trackpoint button of my keyboard stopped to work (it has to be pressed very hard). I took picture of it showing what exactly was broken.   Notice that the black plastic part got separated from the base metal plate causing the middle button stopped to work.I just want to share it because it might be a quality issue. I contacted local Lenovo service and got a new keyboard replacement. Hi all, Since installing Windows 10 I am unable to change the sensitivity of the Trackpoint. I have to press insanely hard to get the cursor to move at a reasonable speed and it makes the machine rather useless for me. In Windows and 8.1 I had the options to change the sensitivity so the cursor would move on a light touch of the Trackpoint. Why has this function been removed? And is it coming back? X230 is officially supported for Windows 10 so you would say you at least get the options of changing the sensitivity. The latest drivers are installed using Lenovo System Update. At this point I'm seriously considering downgrading to 8.1 just to make the Trackpoint usable again. Thanks!

Hello, I have a Lenovo X230 and have a quick question, is it possible to disable the TrackPoint knob (the red knob) while keeping the buttons active? Disabling TrackPoint through the UltraNav driver results in having both the knob and the buttons disabled, the same thing goes for disabling it in the BIOS. Note that this model only has those two buttons build in while newer Lenovo models has two pairs of buttons (above and below the TrackPad). See: http://cdn.asia.cnet.com/story_media/62218216/1.jpg

Answer:X230 - Disable TrackPoint but not buttons?

you can in a way. Just select advanced feature only within the ultranav selection for the trackpoint. This way the trackpoint nib would only act as page scroller and won't move the pointer per se. Then you can switch the trackpoint sensitivity to firm touch. This is what i do for people whom can't use trackpoints.

Although I already reported this as a bug in Chrome , I am pretty confident now that this is a bug in the ElanTech UltraNav driver. Whenever I press Ctrl (and release it) and scroll on a website in Chrome with either the TrackPoint or the Touchpad, Chrome zooms in and out of the page as if Ctrl was still being pressed. This does not happen with a mouse or any other Laptops. To stop this 'zoom mode', I have to switch to another window with Alt-Tab or press Shift once. I already disabled all options in the UltraNav preferences (e.g., zoom function), but the behavior didn't change. Read all the details here: https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=254545 . Basically, my problem is in the title. It feels fine when I just idle a finger on it, but if I tilt it diagonally, I start to feel some heat after a few minutes of use. Its like I'm touching a a hot surface of a cheap laptop under load. I thought it might have been because the CPU was under load, but this happened to me while browsing the internet and writting a paper in wordpad. Is this normal?

Answer:x230 TrackPoint (chiclet) feels extremely hot

how and why do you tilt a trackpoint diagonally for a few minutes?

Is it just me, or do the X230's trackpoint buttons seem really low? They don't seem to have a bump in the front that makes them easy to press. This in addition to how slippery and low the point is compared to the one on my X201 makes pointing and clicking a miserable experience.

Hello, Prior to getting my X230, I had an X201, and the X201's trackpoint was very maneuverable: I was very precise with it and could control it how I wanted to. My X230 does not work this way: The trackpoint doesn't travel how I want it to. It requires more force to move it small distances. In Control Panel: Mouse, I have the pointer speed set to max and the trackpoint settings set to Light Touch. Enhanced Pointer Precision is on (I want it on).  There is definitely something wrong with my machine: I've tried out other X230's, and their trackpoints function the same as my X201's: easy to maneuver. My drivers are all updated.

Answer:X230: Unsatisfactory trackpoint sensitivity/movability

I see no reason not to have Lenovo send u a new keyboard if u are still on warrantee. Keyboards are customer replaceable units and are easy to replace. I would give Lenovo support a call.

As the title suggests, the newest UltraNav driver has reversed the direction for two finger scrolling, and has not given an (obvious) option to change this default behaviour. Is there anything I can do to correct this?Computer details in sig...

Since somehow the compatibility has been fixed with UltraNav drivers and TwoFingerScroll (Windows 8), I have reverted back to using it, as it is the better of the two options.

The latest system update installed UltraNav driver 16.1.1.0 of 4/6/2012.  This apparently implements smooth scrolling which is very nice to use BUT it significantly reduces my battery life.  I'd like to optimise battery life and return to my previous scrolling functionality.  I'd appreciate advice on how to determine which version of the driver I was running before this update, and how can I restore that version of the driver.  (I tried using the roll-back function in Windows Device Manager but that installed version 7.5.27.24 of 7/6/2007 which disbaled scrolling altogether.) T617658CTO Windows XP SP3

Answer:Restoring previous UltraNav driver to disable smooth scrolling

I stumbled onto the Fn-F8 facility for managing UltraNav and realise that I was confusing the smooth-scrolling function introduced in recent versions of FireFox with the EdgeMotion function in UltraNav which was presumable introduced on my system when I upgraded UltraNav from 7.5.17.24 to 16.1.1.0.  I have disabled smooth-scrolling in FireFox but enabled EdgeMotion in UltraNav which seems like a nice compromise between convenience and power consumption. I still have minor quibbles with UltraNav, specifically, when I try to scroll within drop-down boxes in my usual Web applications (like Redmine, for example) the drop-down pane immediately disappears.  I have to drag the pane control on the right (sorry, don't know the correct name for this) to find the option to select.  Before the upgrade I could scroll within dropdowns on the trackpad.  I also have a little block with up and down marks appearing to the left of the pointer arrow when I scroll which wasn't there before.  I'd appreciate any advice about addressing these issues.

I have a T61 that is having a problem with the trackpoint scrolling feature occasionally.  What happens is when I push the middle button, and try to scroll, the window scrolls like its supposed to, but the pointer also moves.  Then when the pointer reaches the edge of the area I'm scrolling, the scrolling stops, and I have to move the pointer back in before I can scroll again.  I have the scrollign settings configured for standard (ie, not smooth or auto-detect).  I have also set the touchpad to be for scrolling and tap zones only (I don't know whether this has anything to do with the problem).  The latest driver (7.5.17.27) is installed.  Any ideas about what else I can try? Thanks,Justin

Answer:Trackpoint scrolling problem

I remember seeing this option in the mouse settings, advanced, where it had check box to use one or the other or both in re to touchpad or the red tip mouse.. I had no issue with it, I tried to recreate your issue but am not willing to screw this one up, sorry. Try that area and also see if the mouse driver is selecting the correct one, and if there is a post bios setting for the mouse functions. Now days with usb mouse, PS2, trackpoint, touchpad, infrared, wireless, we need things simple like a carnival ring toss on to coke bottles.

I have a t430 2342CTO with the latest ultranav drivers installed. I have seen screenshots of older versions of the driver where you can select smooth scrolling for the trackpoint. I was wondering if there is any way to enable this behavior in the current driver. Also, is there any way I can change the amount of lines scrolled by the trackpoint? Changing the windows setting only seems to affect the touchpad, not the trackpoint. Perhaps there is a registry setting or something?

Hi ben_jminw,

You should be able to change those settings under control panel > mousepad > unltranav.

If you're using this driver then try using a previous version.

One of the more persistent (of several) problems plaguing my P50 (20EN) is the spastic, herky-jerky scrolling when using the TrackPoint with middle button. This is far and away the worst trackpoint I have ever used, and I've used a lot of trackpoints over the last 20 years. There are only two TrackPoint settings on this machine, and neither is relevant to this issue:? The 'ThinkPad' tab in the Windows 10 'Mouse Properties' panel has a checkbox to enable and disable TrackPoint globally and radio buttons to select the middle button function.? The Synaptics Control Panel has a slider for controlling the TrackPoint scrolling speed. TrackPoint has always stood out on my list of reasons for buying ThinkPads in the first place, so this is issue particularly poignant for me, and, frankly, I'm close to my wit's end on this one. Please, someone tell me there exists a solution.

Hi!First: this is no problem-request but a solution for everybody with the same problem. I had the problem, that TrackPoint scrolling did not work in some programs. There are some posts available about correcting this issue, but there seems to be a change in the driver, so there needs to be done some changes. I mainly will refer to this post from Elad Karako, because it has a list of programs, where scrolling does not work. This post, the same as others, recommends to edit the file TP4table.dat in the C:\Program Files\Synaptics\SynTP directory. I just updated my T540p with a 3-button touchpad and had the problem, that in some applications the TrackPoint scrolling does not work (Notepad++, Total Commander, ...)Unfortunately the rules did not work. But in newer drivers there is a further option available. The flags has been updated with the option16 Rule indicate the apply this to IBM Stick Scrolling when ScrollMethood is Synaptics. This means, that if the rule should apply to the scrolling done with TrackPoint, the flag needs to be increased by 16. I also had the problem, that the listed option WheelStd did not work in my case. After playing around I found out that Standard worked. So I updated the rules to the following and added them to the upper part of the file TP4table.dat: ; Process Explorer
*,*,*,*,*,PROCEXPL,Standard,0,25
; Notepad++ and Notepad2
*,*,*,*,*,Scintilla,Standard,0,25
*,*,*,*,*,Notepad2U,Standard,0,25
*,*,*,*,*,Notepad++,Standard,... Read more

Answer:TrackPoint scrolling not working

Excellent detective work both here and with one line scrolling; the TP4table.dat compatibility listing doesn't seem to have been updated for a long time.

If you need to reinstall the Trackpoint driver for your unit, here is the link below: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-4KMUYL Download and save this file to the desktop and the open the folder and run the setup.exe file You might also need the Trackpoint Accessibility Driver, which can be found here: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-4Z9QVD See if installing these two drivers will help you. If the drivers are installed correctly and you are still having problems with the trackpoint scrolling, it could possibly be a mechancial issue and the part would need replacement. Let me know if this helps you any. Mark

I am using MS Office 2007 on my Lenovo X60 with 2GB RAM and Win XP Proffesional.  I cannot scroll pages in MS Word 2007 using the standard scrolling type setting in the mouse properties dialog box in the control panel.  When I change the scrolling type setting to auto-select I am able to scroll but the scrolling is so fast that I cannot control it. Moreover, the scrolling does not work at all in either standard or auto-select mode in some of the MS Office dialog boxes.  I have upgraded to the latest trackpoint driver, but that does not seem to improve the situation.  Does anyone have a solution to this problem?

Answer:Trackpoint scrolling speed on X60

I think that when you set the scrolling type in mouse properties to auto, you simply use the standard mouse-wheel click auto-scrolling feature of Office. Check if you can find any Office setting that allows you to adjust the auto-scrolling speed.

I prefer to use my trackpoint stick rather than the touchpad because I can leave my hands in typing position.  Trouble is my X230 stick feels much harder to move than my other current and former  Thinkpads.  Even using the stick for just a couple minutes makes my finger sore.  I have adjusted the Wndows control panel -> mouse ultranav -> trackpoint -> settings -> trakcpoint stick -> sensitivity to light touch.  But I use other thinkpads (T430, x120e) stick with sensitivity set in the middle and they are much easier to start movement with.  All Lenovo drivers are current. Seems that the X230 stick is different and requires much more pressure to get going compared to other models. Any suggestions or other adjustments I could try? Thanks.

since i've gotten my x201 i've been pretty happy with it. the only problem i've had with it is scrolling. on some applications such as itunes and AIM the program doesn't scroll. i've read a few entries saying that i have to modify the tp4table.dat file and it does work.my question is why is this necessary when other laptops don't need to do this. is this because synaptics drivers do not support scrolling in those applications yet? also how often does lenovo release new drivers to update support for more programs

Answer:scrolling problem with touchpad/trackpoint

Hello keviinf, modify the tp4table.dat file is the one way, updating the ultra nav drivers could help also. Please reboot your system after editing the tp4table.dat file.Otherwise it wonīt work.I did some tweaks on my both systems too. Like enabling horizontal scrolling in Firefox.

Hi all, I pretty much always use my Trackpoint to scroll (with the middle button). But several sites I visit see horizontal scrolls as triggers to change page. So, I'll be reading a page, scrolling down via the Trackpoint -- and at some point I'll have deviated enough from vertical to trigger the horizontal behavior -- and I'll then be shuttled off to a page I don't mean to be on. Is there any way to configure the Trackpoint scroll to ONLY scroll vertically? If not, is there perhaps a way to get Google Chrome to stop listening to the horizontal scroll? Thanks, it's actually quite a PITA for some sites I visit.

Answer:Is it possible to prevent the Trackpoint from scrolling horizontally?

This happens to me all the time on DeviantArt >.>Never figured out a solution for it. One might be able to write a Greasemonkey script to disable that behavior though.

Hello, everyone! I'm having an issue with zooming inside autocad using the center mouse button on the laptop and the trackpoint. Whenever I try to zoom using the trackpoint, my drawing disappears and the entire autocad window seems to move up or down. Using the mousewheel on a USB mouse works just fine. Research about this issue reveals that it has been common for thinkpads since at least the T60, but all such questions go unanswered. Please tell me if there is a way to use the trackpoint to zoom and pan. I'd really like to enjoy the benefit of not having to take my hands off the keyboard to use the mouse.

Answer:X220 autocad trackpoint scrolling

Is there any solution to this problem out there? This is reasonably important for me.

Hi, I'm on a X61t and my trackpoint+middle-button scrolling doesn't work in a few applications like iTunes, GIMP, and MatLab.  I downloaded the latest drivers and they fixed Office 07, but I didn't notice any other changes. It appears that older drivers had an easy way to go in and change settings for individual applications, per http://www.lvlolvlo.net/2007/02/11/office-2007-on-a-thinkpad-ultranav-support-for-scrolling-fix/.  I don't have the folders and files they refer to. How can I fix this? Thanks,Neal

Hi guys, I'm Alex, newly subscribed user to your Thinkpad forum, and here to ask for your help (if possible) ! Here is what I'm facing right now on my old (but still working like a charm) W510 :Quite happy to move away from Windows 8, I recently accepted to make the upgrade to the newest Microsoft OS : windows 10 64bits. It didn't take long to get used to it and I haven't had any issues with the programs I am using daily. But... I am having troubles with my trackpoint scrolling method. On both Chrome and Edge browsers installed on my computer, scrolling is buggy/laggy/not smooth at all. Web pages seem to "stick" a bit to much which makes jumps every time you try to scroll with the trackpoint. On the touchpad it is better but not so good either. It is really not a big issue but it can drive you a bit crazy after some time... Surprinsingly, scrolling is great on the OS. The issue is only happening on some programs. After looking around on the web, I am pretty sure that the issue is coming from the UltraNav driver. Since everything was working great on 8.1, I decided to reinstall the old driver (UltraNav 16.2.19.14). And as expected, it worked ! Scroll was back to what it was before, but not working on Microsoft Edge. I am using Chrome so I didn't pay much attention to that anyway. But since Windows 10 doesn't let you choose the updates that are installed , the issue came back when Windows Updates automatically installed the supposedly "newest a... Hi, I am attempting to fix a problem with scrolling in Windows 10 (also applicable to Win 8/8.1). Everything works as it should within non-Windows programs, but "apps" and Windows OS screens do not allow scrolling. I am using the most recent (Windows 7) Lenovo driver. I have tried installing the Ultranav version (updated for Windows 8) but it will not allow it. Any ideas on how to get a working driver installed on this machine? Everything else seems to be working flawlessly.

Hello everyone, I searched a bit both these forums and others but haven't found the solution to this problem I'm experiencing. I recently bought a used T430 and I've been using it for the last couple of days, trying to get used to trackpoint and all. I performed a clean windows install and installed a Win 10 education my university provides. I followed the advice on Lenovo webpage about letting Windows update do its thing first and then run the Lenovo System Update utility to update drivers as necessary. Everything's working nicely other than some issues with the trackpoint buttons (the 3 buttons just below the space bar are called the trackpoint buttons I guess?)  Anyway, the issue is that before I did a fresh install, the middle button when pushed entered the scroll mode which then let me scroll using the trackpoint. Now it still enters the scroll mode but also does a right-click when I let go. This leads to an issue where a right-click is performed at every scroll step(if that makes sense) which leads to wonky scrolling. One other issue is that the right button does nothing at all. I expected the middle button to only have scroll functionality and the right button to simply right-click.  Things I've tried so far: - Manually removed the pointer device and ran Lenovo system update again to update the UltraNav drive, and also disabled auto-driver installation of windows update. The driver version installed by System Update is 19.0.17.115.&nb... Read more

When scrolling with the trackpoint, I find that the pages don't roll as smooth as the older Thinkpads did. My T410 scrolls much more smoothly than my X250, and I'm thinking that it is a driver issue. I have the latest Synaptics driver, which would be 18.1.27.14. I've tried rolling back the drivers, and it still doesn't improve the scrolling issue. Did anyone else experience this problem? Has anyone fixed it? Also, as an aside, I've found that I could not play FPS games with trackpoint. The left and right buttons don't click immediately after typing. I always get killed right after sprinting because I'm standing there, unable to shoot. Other than that, the trackpoint is suprisingly easy to use for games.

I've noticed something similar running the same 18.1.27.14 driver on my W520.Does trying to two-finger scroll on the touchpad temporarily make the TrackPoint scroll better? Are you on Windows 7 or 8.x?I played a good few months of BF3 on TrackPoint only when my proper mouse died, and it works very well for following a moving target.
