Windows SMART check and System Check contradictory

Question: Windows SMART check and System Check contradictory

I have what I believe is a probably Hard Disk failiure; however, the Windows utility provides different output than the error codes provided by the System level check. The below is from my OS check:Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7601]Copyright (c) 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.C:\Users\user>wmicwmic:root\cli>diskdrive get statusStatusOKwmic:root\cli> It seems to indicate status as OK. However, the system level Hardware Test before booting shows the following:Failiure ID is: 9PMPKK-5B284T-XD002K-60QS03Product ID is XG809UA#ABA I assume the OS level SMART Test is less reliable, then? Thanks!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hey guys,

The company I'm working for has grown a lot and now I'm no longer the only programmer. We're looking for an app that lets us do code check-in/check-out that'll also store all the changes.

All the files we need monitored are plaintext, and we do most of our development in Notepad or Notepad++. The app must work in Server 2003.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Answer:Code Repository/Check-in/Check-out system

I think subversion should handle your needs...

The problem start with my wife's PC. It started a few weeks ago she told me. She can't open Outlook Express (doesn't start), access My Space or get updates at Windows Update. Also some images on sites do not load.

I then checked my PC and found, I couldn't access Windows Update, My Space, Thunderbird fails to retrieve emails. I have not noticed any issues with images.

Given this sounded like some of the behaviors I have heard of trojans doing I thought I would post my logs here and see if anyone sees anything out of place. Normally I wouldn't consider a cross contamination but about two weeks I temporarily set up a home network between our PCs to share a few files. The next day I disabled NetBIOS on my PC but as we are both behind a hardware firewall, I guessing if it happened it must have happened then.

Nothing jumps out at me but I wanted to get a second opinion.

Any help would be appreciated.

My HP 15 Notebook PC is showing this ,Smart hard disk error, smart hard disk check detected an imminent failure

Answer:Smart check: not available

> SMART hard disk error, SMART hard disk check detected an imminent failure. This is a very common question on this forum. For a definition of 'SMART', see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S.M.A.R.T. It is technology built-in to the disk-drive, to measure over 20 points about the "health" of your disk-drive.An example: overheating. Google-search for "download free SPECCY".Download, install, and run SPECCY, and expand the "Storage" section.Expand the "SMART" section to show all those measurements-- look for anything labelled WARNING or BAD.Tell us what you see. Your disk-drive is on its "last legs". Do not run "disk-intensive" tasks, such as "Disk Defragmenter". Before it completely fails, backup all your files onto an external disk-drive (or large-capacity USB memory-stick).Remember to include your "bookmarks" and your E-mail messages. Also, search on your computer for a program to create a "System Recovery Set".This "set" can be written to one 16GB USB memory-stick, or burnt to a few DVD-recordable disks. Or, did the manufacturer provide you this "set" on a few DVD disks? Take an inventory of what "free" programs are installed on your computer, e.g., Adobe Reader, Audacity, iTunes.Take an inventory of what "commercial" programs are installed on your computer, e.g., Microsoft Office, and find the "license-keys" for such software. Purchase a new disk-drive.Take your computer to a computer-store, for them to look at t... Hello,
I am tired of resetting my windows xp after GWSCANNING. I have been running everything under the sun to defend myself against this perpetrator. To no avail.
For most of these, I guess I can create a user and login to it under windows to be able to delete most of these, but there are a few entries that are a little complicated. Would this work?
It appears that this invasion is installed by something on the startup. I am about fried on this and normally would figure this thing out. I have been working on it for about 2 weeks now. It just got to the point to where it is bad enough to be a necessity fix. Can you please send me exact instructions on how to get rid of this from my hard drive and what software I should use to protect myself from this malicious attack.

Question: SMART Check Virus

Windows XP Home Edition Version2002 SP3. I am sending this from my laptop, although I do have internet access.
Not sure where to start, or if I am in the right Forum.
2 days ago I picked up something called SMART Check. It started with cascading error messages, and when clicked off, started a phoney scan of some sort. I logged off and shut down and upon rebooting my desktop was a blank grey screen. :cry
I Found a website with removal insructions (Malware Experts?) which seemed reasonable and proceeded. SMART seems to now be gone, but everything else was still hidden. I still had a blank grey desktop except for what was downloaded to remove it (Rkill & Malwarebytes) What was left showing was like an alternate computer with everything lost. Functional, but barren.

However by right clicking START and opening Explore all my files were still here (somewhere). I was able to go into Folder Options, and under the View Tab I checked "show hidden files and folders" and unchecked "hide protected operating system files". I now have a new re-arranged desktop, minus my background picture. All seems to be here, except my favorites in Yahoo are gone, and my desktop icons seem to be ghosty & transparent.
Is this the result of SMART Check, or something I did in removing it, and can it be repaired? Is it time to salvage what I can, while I can, and say goodbye?

Answer:SMART Check Virus

Hello,I am posting today in regards to another notebook.. This time it is a HP 15-f009ca, the OS installed is Windows 8.1. My issue is that when I start the laptop, it tells me that "the SMART disk check has detected an imminent failure, please backup contents immediately and run the disk check test in system diagnostics." The disk check test immediately fails, and it gives me a failure ID: M4H221-7A2859-MFPV7F-608G03.It attempts to do the automatic repair, and it fails. When I click enter to continue startup, it gets to another screen that says "Your PC needs to be repaired, A required device isn't connected or can't be accessed.Error Code: 0xc000000f" I do not have the recovery tools required as I bought this PC at Wal-Mart so it came with Windows 8.1 pre-installed.I also sometimes get the same screen telling me my PC needs to be repaired, but it says the system file or registry key is missing or damaged config\system32. All I want to do is get my pictures off of it, I don't even care if it gets fixed I just need my pictures, I mounted Windows 8.1 to a USB (since it has no DVD-Drive), I was able to get it to boot from the USB one time, but unfortunately when I went to use command prompt, it froze. Is there anything I can do? I've attempted to get it to boot from USB about 50 times, it simply won't work anymore. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi

I have a question about my hard drive - Samsung HM250JI. That's SATA 2.5" 5400RPM. Several years old, fine so far.
Lately it started to behave strange. It still works, but sometimes it makes loud click noises (it's like knocking on the table) Like it hit something but that makes no sense. Other times, there's a quiet sound that's like a beep - is there a beep speaker inside the hard drive?? Or it could be the motor too...

So far the drive works. But I'm worried so I'm making regular backups like several times a week.

Check out this screenshot. Do you think it's serious?

(I hope this drive can hold out)

Answer:HDD SMART Check alert

It's not a question of will it fail, only a question of when.

Answer:MALWARE - SMART CHECK REMOVAL

Hello and Welcome to Bleeping Computer!!My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems. I have put together somethings for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier and faster for both of usPlease do not run any tools unless instructed to do so.
We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability. Please do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.
Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. Also, attachments require us to download and open the reports when it is easier to just read the reports in your post. Please read every post completely before doing anything.
Pay special attention to the NOTE: lines, these entries identify an individual issue or important step in the cleanup process. Please provide feedback about your experience as we go.
A short statement describing how the computer is working helps us understand where to go next, for example: I am still getting redirected, the computer is running normally, etc. Please do not describe the computer as "the same", this requires the extra step of looking back at your previous post.NOTE:... This computer had problems with the hard drive which failed and the smart hard drive check notified me of this. I have since swapped the hard drive to a SanDisk SSD but the hard drive check is still failing even though the drive works perfectly well and I know this because I tested it on my Toshiba notebook computer (ancient machine). The SSD is not brand new, it used to be a permanent fixture inside a Toshiba notebook which was running Debian Linux. Anyway I swapped it out and put it inside the HP, but the smart disc check is still saying there are problems with the hard disc and I wondered if this was a problem with the SATA connector (or some other parts of the hardware), or simply because it was an operating system that the machine was not expecting.I am desperate to get some help on this matter so truly grateful for any suggestions that can be made.System born on: 14/12/2015BIOS vendor: insideBIOS version: F.80( hopefully this is posting in the correct place, please let me know if it isn't!)Thank you,Samuel

Answer:Hard Drive SMART Check: Failed

Hi, The 24 character error code does confirm a Smart failure and would indicate that the Hard Drive is failing and needs to be replaced. If your notebook is still under warranty, contact HP and arrange to have the drive replaced - If needed, you can check your warranty status Here. If you live in the US, contact HP Here. If you are in another part of the world, start Here. If you are out of warranty and would like a guide on replacing the Hard Drive yourself, please let me know. Regards, DP-K

Answer:Hard Drive Smart Check FAILED

The hard drive needs to be replaced. We need you to identify the model of the laptop for any further instructions or help. Are you under warranty?  On many models it is an easy removal and replacement and replacement hard drives are not terribly expensive...under $60US. Other models it is not so easy.

So, recently, while watching a few streams online on my laptop. My laptop suddenly decided to freeze, after rebooting it etc it gave me an error:  Boot Device Not FoundPlease install an operating system on your hard disk Hard disk (3F0) Shocked, but not surprised I decided to check the inside of my laptop, see if perhaps there is a loose wire. After opening my laptop and checking if there is a lose wire/reseating my hard drive, my computer still gave the same error. So I decided to run a few tests on my hard drive in the F2 HP PC config menu, with the HDD tests etc. After doing an extensive test it said: Smart Check: PassedLong Check: Failed Confused and all I decided to enter the bios and reset it, after a reset it told me to insert a valid boot drive and then press any key to continue. Even more confused I rebooted my laptop and ran another quick test/extensive test, this time it told me: Quick Test: Smart check: Not installedShort check: Not installed Extensive test Smart check: Not installedLong check: Not installed Any help is appreciated Kind Regards,Kirosaka

Answer:Smart check and Long/Short DST not installed

Whenever the Hard Disk Short DST test fails with an error "Hard disk [3F0]" that indicates that the Hard Disk Drive has failed and that requires a replacement to resolve the issue This issue could be due to Application or driver conflicts, virus issues, file corruptions due to incompatible applications, improper shutdowns, update failures due to conflicts, sudden power surges, if notebook is dropped etc.. HP will provide a replacement Hard Disk Drive if the Notebook warranty is Active, If not you need buy a SATA Hard Disk Drive from a retail shop nearby Please make sure you are getting at least equal capacity as the original one in order to use Recovery Disks. If you need you can buy a larger, but not smaller capacity Hard Disk Drive. For example if you have a 500GB Hard Disk Drive you can upgrade it to 750GB Hard Disk Drive but not 320GB Hard Disk Drive Please try the below shown troubleshooting steps once:Step 01. Remove the battery and unplug the AC/Power AdapterStep 02. Press and hold the Power button for more than 30 SecondsStep 03. Plug in the AC/Power Adapter (leave the Battery out for now)Step 04. Press the Power button and check if the Unit works normal If the above mentioned steps does not help, then you can try reseating the Hard Drive on your Notebook If the issue persists again please Contact HP if your HP Notebook is under warranty, HP would replace the Hard Disk Drive and provide you a Recovery media to restore facto... Good day,

I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit.

I was browsing the internet using internet explorer 8 and all of the sudden my applications closed and my background went black. All of my programs in my taskbar are gone. No programs on my Start menu as well. I can't see any folders on my drive: C as well.

And then there is a pop up program "SMART Check" telling me that my hard disk failed and giving me a lot of errors. It also added an icon on my desktop "Data_Recovery".

I searched the web on how I can remove this virus and I found one: http://malwaretips.com/blogs/how-to-remove-s-m-a-r-t-check/

I followed the instructions and the virus is still there when I tried to restart my computer.

Now, almost all of the time I'm getting redirected to a unknown website whenever I try searching on google.

Please let me know how we can get rid of this virus and I appreciate the help in advance!

Thank you,

Test Logs show System [Q] and [F] failed with Failure ID: 9LHW7F-8B58JU-GXGK6K-608B03 on Hard Drive 1

Answer:Hard Drive SMART Check: Failed

@MisterEd7 Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums! Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but according to HP, that error message means that your primary storage drive (i.e., hard drive) is in imminent danger of failing. While it could last for several more days, it could also fail immediately! The more you use the drive, the less likely you'll be able to recover anything on it.So, there are four issues to address here:1) Data Recovery2) Drive replacement3) Recovery Media4) System restoration---------- Data Recovery ----------Your best bet for recovering data now is to do the following:1) Remove the hard drive from the PC2) Purchase a USB-to-Hard Driver adapter kit3) Download and install this utility on a working PC: http://www.majorgeeks.com/news/story/recover_data_in_3_steps_with_minitool_power_data_recovery_free_...4) Connect the old drive to the working PC5) Run the data recovery utility to see what can be retrieved from the old drive. If that tools does not find what you need, an alternative is Recuva: http://www.piriform.com/recuvaAnd, if that does not work well, the best tool out there is this one, but only the trial version is free: http://www.file-recovery.com/---------- Drive Replacement ----------The drive will need to be replaced. When you remove it, you will see that it is a 2 1/5 inch laptop SATA drive. You can replace this with any similar laptop drive of the same capacity or larger.---------- Recovery Media ----------Once you have the replacement ... Answer:HARD DRIVE SMART Check failed

If you are out of warranty and would like a guide on replacing the Hard Drive yourself, please let me know - include the full Model No. and Product No. of your notebook - see Here for a further explanation. Regards, DP-K

I have been using this computer almost daily, and the last few days I noticed that it had been running slowly and being rather noisy. This evening it would not boot and gave me some type of primary boot device error. I ran HP system diagnostics, and the machine is not recognizing that there is a hard drive installed.

How about identifying your notebook with its product name or product number?  That is what we need to see what the hardware configuration of your notebook is.   see the document at the following URLhttp://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c00033108 Check your warranty status Here.

hard drive smart check failed   failure ID  MBX2XW-7R689H-MFPV7F-60CP03 PROD  G6Q75VA#ABA

Answer:hard drive smart check failed

The electronics on the disk-drive have 'S.M.A.R.T'.SMART does real-time monitoring of many characteristics of the disk-drive, e.g.,* how many milli-seconds from "off" to "ready",* maximum temperature,* number of hours of usage,* number of "bad" sectors that have been mapped to some "spare" sectors,* and so on. So, a "SMART failure" is an indication that the "observed" values have exceeded the "normal" values, i.e., "out-of-range". Take the notice as a warning that your disk-drive is "dying". Google-search for 'download SPECCY free'.Download, install, and run it, to look at all the measurements in the SMART categories. Make a "backup" of your files/music/pictures/bookmarks onto an external disk-drive,or buy a brand-new disk-drive, connect it, and "clone" your current disk-drive onto the new disk-drive,and reconfigure your computer to boot from the new disk-drive. Is your disk-drive relatively "new", e.g., less than 2 years old?If so, it may still be warrantied by the manufacturer,i.e., ship them your disk-drive, and they will ship you an *EMPTY* replacement drive. You'll need to reinstall Windows, and reload your files from your "backup".

This laptop originally came a/windows 8.1 and was since upgraded to windows 10. In a fit of rage, I smacked it with my hand in the area just above the hard drive. I noticed afterwards that the hard drive makes an adnormal clicking sound now and when I turn on the laptop it asks me to do a hard drive check. The results of the check:SMART Check : NOT INSTALLEDLong DST : NOT INSTALLEDAlso when I turn it on, I here a rapid succession of around 10 beeping sounds. After I do the hard drive check, I push F10 and in System Configuration when I click on: OS Boot Manager it says is not found. If I disable the Secure Boot, I can click on Reset to HP defaults, or something like that, and get it to boot up again. I tried this without reenabling the Secure Boot and I just now did it again with the Secure Boot enabled and I have arrived at the HP Recovery Manager screen. I tried the Minimized Image Recovery and it says: HP Recovery Manager failed. Error code = OxEFFFFFO8. I closed that box and it goes right back to where I started. Hard Disk ErrorPlease run the Hard Disk Test in System Diagnostics. So did I ruin the Hard Drive? Is there any hope that I have left to cling to here? Please advise.

Hi

XP Pro
Compaq nx6110 Laptop

Recently had this smart disk corrupt disk thing and proceeded to take steps to get rid of it:

Firstly ran the iexplorer.exe
As all my links were dud I had to log into my Admin account, update Malware bytes and run the process from there - did not have to go into safe mode with networking
This removed 3 files I think it was and from that I had to run the unhide process
Now the only thing I haven't done is restore my start menu items

Finally, apart from restoring my start menu, is there anything else I can do to check I am still not infected?

Thanks

Andrew

My laptop wouldn't restart after I updated it and a hard disk error came up so I ran a hardware diagnostic test and it said the smart check passed but the short DST failed. I don't know what to do now.

Answer:Passed smart check but failed short DST hardware diagnostic

Did you do the extensive Test? If so, and you got the same response: Failed. I'm afraid, you might need a new Hard Drive. If your PC is under warranty, call HP Support, they will fix it, but you will have to send it to them.  If out of warranty, you will have to purchase a Hard Drive and replace it or have someone install it for you, like a computer technician. Hope I've been of some help, I'm not a computer expert,  but the same thing happened to me a few weeks ago. HP Supporters are wonderful here. From what I've learned on here, I am just trying to help out another.  Hope it works out for you.

All of the sudden my laptop has this black screen with the above message. It also tells me to backup the content immediately and run the Hard Disk test in System Diagnostics. First how can I back up anything since I cannot get past the black screen? Second when I run the Hard Disk test (quick or extensive), it tells me Smart check and Short DST not available.  I am not an expert in computers, but when I bought this back in early 2013 the first thing I did was make a recovery disk, it only did the Repair disc and no others. Since it was newer than the one I had before that made 5, I thought is all I needed, but when I insert it does not work.  This is running Windows 7, not really sure if is a 32 or 64 bit sorry. It is an i7 and has an SSD. I went all out on this computer when I bought since I detest Windows 8. Spent a little over $1100.00, so I would appreciate any help.

Answer:"SMART hard disk check has detected an imminent failure"

Hi,  Thank you for posting your concern on the Support Forums and sorry about the issue you are having. F2 Test on HDD giving error message ? SMART Check not installed Short DST not installed means that the HDD is not getting detected by the computer you might want to go to BIOS by tapping F10 and check if you see HDD listed. If not then yes HDD is not getting detected at all by the unit. I?m not sure how comfortable you are tearing down the unit to reseat the parts. But if you are, you might want to reseat the HDD, if that works well and good, if not nothing much can be done as either the HDD or the cable connecting the HDD to the Motherboard has gone bad, or I?m sorry you mentioned its SSD so it brings us down to replacing the SSD itself. The recovery media is not going to work as the Hardware component on which the recovery media would install the operating system itself is not getting detected on the unit.  Please write us back in case you would need any further assistance we would be happy to help. Or if the unit is in warranty call HP Tech Support at 1-800-474-6836, they will guide you further. To check the warranty status here use this link-http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/weInput?cc=us&lc=en.Although I work for HP but I'm speaking for myself. Please click ?Accept as Solution? if you feel my post solved your issue, it will help others find the solution. Greetings,

Recently my computer acquired the System Check virus. I tried to get on the net and research what to do to remove it and had marginal luck. The virus has made it so that I cannot get on the net so I am using another pc. Here is the short version of what I did.

Researched the topic
Downloaded Malwarebytes
Downloaded Rkill
Downloaded Unhide
Downloaded Avast
Downloaded SuperAntispyware

I ran them each seperately but Im not sure this is the correct way to do it from reading some of the previous examples of fixing the issue, but I didnt know this until after I ran them.

I can give a more accurate list of what was done if you wish. I have not been able to get rid of the virus. It was then today that I found your site here with a good thread on fixing this issue. My question to you is, what do I need to do to fix this? There are several sites that want you to download some kind of software but I am leary of them. There is one site that says I need to erase registry entries but I am not adept at doing anything with the registry. I feel that you are one of the only trustworthy sites. Another question is, should I go ahead and move all my files to a external drive before doing anything else?

Your help will be most appreciated.

Answer:HP Envy freezing at login. Hard drive smart check failed.

Hello @robwazzu,  Sorry to know !! Whenever the Hard Disk Short/Long DST test fails that indicates that the Hard Disk Drive has failed and that requires a replacement to resolve the issue HP will provide a replacement Hard Disk Drive if the Notebook warranty is Active, If not you need buy a SATA Hard Disk Drive from a retail shop nearby. Please Contact HP if your HP Notebook is under warranty, HP would replace the Hard Disk Drive and provide you a Recovery media to restore factory operating system after replacement (if you've not yet created Recovery Discs/USB Media) Note: Back up all the personal data to an external drive if it's possible. Otherwise you could connect the failed HDD via SATA to USB adapter with another PC or same PC after replacement of HDD & re-installation of OS and try copying /recovering the files. Answer:reinstall of windows 98 se hangs on system check

A low level format will remove all commpressed space on the drive. So suprised that after format you are having the problem.System check of course is not just limited to the HDD it may be a memory problem causing the hang.Have had to do several installs in the past to get by the same problem with 98 and ME.

My problem is pop-ups. I have used Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta, Ad-Aware SE, Spyware Sweeper 3.5, Spyware Doctor 3.2, Spybot 1.3 and Earthlink's Spy Audit. None of these were able to stop the pop-ups.

I have set Norton Internet Security 2005 to block pop-ups and have done the same for Internet Explorer. I've also tried MSN Toolbar, Earthlink Total Access. None of these have worked.

I have ran numerous virus scans without success. The pop-ups are for companies from Intel to Capital One.

Microsoft Auto-Scheduling Windows 10 Updates

Now, as we near the end of the free upgrade period, Microsoft?s malware-like upgrade system is becoming even more intrusive by autoscheduling upgrades to Windows 10. I noticed that the Windows 10 upgrade reminder pop-up on a Windows 7 PC was no longer asking me to upgrade; instead, it?s now informing me that it has already scheduled an update for May 17.Click to expand...

lol, just as people predicted, MS was going to force W10 updates even if you don't want it.

Answer:Check your Windows 7 system: MS is scheduling W10 updates, whether you want it or not

Wait, are you saying that if I have my computer configured to automatically install recommended updates, it automatically installs recommended updates!?

So a coworker has asked me to fix his computer. The "System Check" Malware has been installed and seems to have other stuff as well. I have ran my usual tools, Malwarebytes, SuperAntiSpyware, and while the "system check" window no longer shows up. I cant help but feel that there is more on this system. When I click the start orb, on the right side of the start menu where Computer, control panel, ect are supposed to be, there is nothing, just white space. And on the left side where the recent apps are supposed to be, again nothing just white. The only way that I can access computer is through searching for computer in the windows start menu. I can if need be have access to a boot cd.

Any help on this would be great!

Hi,

I'm new to this site and need some advice.

I have a Satellite C660 Laptop and when I recently turned it on I got this message.. HDD has a Smart Predict Failure Function, check drive.

I have done a HDD Recovery but still getting the same message.
Do I need to buy a new HDD and if so where is the best place to buy one.

I live in regional WA.

Any advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Ange

Answer:Satellite C660 - message: HDD Smart Predict Failure Function - check drive

Hi

This looks like the HDD is going bad and in this case the recover procedure isn?t a real solution.
I think you have to replace the HDD in order to fix this problem.

The notebook supports the 2.5? SATA HDD and I think that you should find some good online offers in your region.

By the way: after the HDD replacement you should be able to recover the notebook again using the recovery disk.

Hi there im having problem with my windows 10 Pro 64 bit I get a notification to restart my computer to repair disk errors every time I restart my system it fails to run disk repair. So I run a check disk scan first, Run as Administrator command by typing chkdsk C: /scan with no problems I?ve got some repairs to be fixed offline. So I use the command chkdsk C: /spotfix and I get Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N) Y This volume will be checked the next time the system restarts.
Whenever I schedule a disk check and restart the computer, absolutely nothing happens my system simply boots up as it normally does. So I Open registry and browse to key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager
?BootExecute? The registry value for BootExecute reads: autocheck autochk /p \??\C: autocheck autochk *
My file System is NTFS and my Disk is FUJITSU_MHZ2320BJ_G2 please help me to solve this issue.

Answer:Windows 10 Scheduled Disk Check Won't Run on system startup

Hi, I'd suggest running chkdsk C: /F from a boot disk, then when that's ok, boot up and run sfc /Scannow from an elevated command prompt.

Once all clear, you can try a scheduled chkdsk again to see if that works.

Note: I like a utility called 'chkdsk assist'. There's also ChdskGUI - not tried it.

Hi all,
Here is my problem in a nutshell: I'm trying to run ComboFix in safe mode (the computer crashes after a few minutes in normal mode), and ComboFix is telling me that TrendMicro antivirus and Windows Security Center are running, even they don't appear to be (I disabled Windows Security Center as indicated on the tutorials on this site, and Task Manager doesn't show any Trend Micro processes or services to be running). My first question is whether it is safe to run ComboFix at this point (is it possible that the programs really aren't running); if not, how do I disable these programs even though they both appear to be disabled? The full version of my problem is below.

My Windows 7 PC was infected with the System Check virus. I ran MalwareBytes and then a root killer (that didn't find anything) and unhid all hidden icons, etc. At first, the computer seemed to be running normally; then, it started crashing - I'd get a BSOD with a Windows stop error. I tried doing a system restore, but that didn't help. Now, if I boot into normal mode, I get the BSOD/stop error after a few minutes, even if I don't do anything on the computer. One of the computer techs at my university recommended that I run ComboFix (I have the tutorial open on my laptop), then MalwareBytes, then a full anti-virus scan (all in safe mode). My question is whether you would suggest this route or another, and how do I safely run ComboFix with the problem noted above? ... Read more

Well, after using OS X for a while, I must say the feature I enjoy the most is the system wide spell checking feature. Other features of OS X annoy me and while it's a pretty good/stable operating system, it's just not for me since most of the software I need is for Windows and I have a lot of software/classes that require Windows. Plus, I just prefer the Linux and Window GUIs over OS X's (though I do fancy the dock).

Anyway, just as the thread title suggests, I want to know of some system-wide spell checkers for both Windows and Linux.

I've heard of As-U-Type and am trying it out now. Unfortunately I cannot try out the corrections list (like when you right click on a work to fix it in MS Word) unless I pay $30, plus it's a time-base trial anyway.

Does anyone know of a good system-wide spell checker that works in Windows and is free? What about Linux? Does it also work in Opera(For some reason, most spell checkers seem to not work in opera... At least from what I've heard).

Thanks!

I ran Combofix to try and solve my issues, as my computer would not connect to the internet. DHCP was not started but this was resolved after combofix was run. Now it is two days later and the System Check virus popped up so I ran the Combofix and it solves the problem, but then I had to shut down and I was back to square one. Did combofix again and I can get online. Also my Windows Defender does not seem to be working or system restore. Thank you so much in advance. I hope something can be done!

A couple nights ago I left my pc on to complete a download and set it to shutdown when it completed. I have done this many times without issue. But since waking up that day, I can not get Windows to start. I have run the start up repair and it is unable to fix my computer. It returns the system files integrity check and repair 0x490 error. I did a system restore from less than a week before and it didn't fix the problem. I have been able to start Windows in safe mode, but that hasn't helped in fixing the issue either.

I recently moved and left my install disk somewhere at home so I am trying to find a way to fix this without having to reinstall Windows. Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:Hard Drive Short DST Check : WARNING and Optimized DST Check...

Yes you need to replace the hard drive. Since you have upgraded to Windows 10 it is very easy to get recovery media directly from the Microsoft Media Creation Tool. For most people, the problem is not physically swapping out the hard drive, but restoring the operating system since they do not have recovery disks. Post back if you want a service manual and/or video showing the replacement, purchase options for a new hard drive and step-by-step for restoring Windows 10. We would need the full model...g6-????

Is verifying files by check sum / content after transferring (copying, moving) indeed unreliable?

Since "ever" I - if I checked files at all - checked files by content or check sum after transferring them, so this information sounds very astonishing to me now, I hadn't had any clue about what I read here: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/oldnewthing/archive/2012/09/19/10350645.aspx

Obviously meaning in many cases checking files by content / check sum checks the data in the buffer, if I see it right.

So, is it like that? Does it refer to all of the synchronizing / backup / copying, check sum, etc. programs?

And what is the best / easiest way to (automatically) check files after transferring. E.g. when copying all of the files of a 4TB drive to another one.

Answer:Verifying files by check sum / content after transferring unreliable - how to check?

Kletus...

I'm not in my league with this, but could this make sense?

I think the article is referring to times when you are seeking to verify data across a network span between two systems (operating systems), where system b (copy destination) requests a checksum from system a (file original location). I believe the author is saying that in that particular situation checksums would be created from the cache/buffer on both computers. In the case of you copying to a secondary disk connected to a single computer I think the checksum should work fine. Sounds like one of those programmer's dilemmas to me.

Sorry if I am off on this. I know you are looking for some programming expertise. I'll just say that reading this, it made sense to me about the author's comments:

This really sounds like you're overthinking it.

First, what possible reason would there be for giving someone write access but not read access to a certain location? That's screwed up on so many different levels...

Second, you're right that having the sender compute a checksum of the destination file is a bad idea for all the reasons mentioned. But why did you even think of doing that in the first place?!? If I was implementing a system like that, I'd have the *destination* system compute the checksum on the file it received and send it back to the sender for verificati... Read more

I'm working on a friends Inspiron 3646, and it's infested with malware and viruses to the point that it wasn't worth fighting and I thought I would just back up their data and recover the machine back to factory.
When I started, the computer was running Windows 10, the recovery partition apparently puts it back to Windows 8.1, which isn't a problem in and of itself, but I noticed that when asking Windows Updates to check for updates, it would just spin, forever.  I tried waiting 8+ hours.
After banging my head against this problem for a day or more and trying dozens of fixes, I assumed maybe my fixes made the problem worse, and tried another recovery, but nope.  Same problem.
So it looks like the copy of Windows 8.1 on the recovery partition doesn't want to play nice with Microsoft, and so here we are.  Things I've tried:

Two full system recoveries, obviously
Dell Backup and Recovery tools to analyze the disk, etc, no errors found

She has unplugged and replugged the video cable several times... any ideas why this is?

That suggests that the computer is not booting, or if it is, there is no video output.

A simple check to see if the computer is booting is to try the CAPS Lock key. Pressing it will toggle the CAP light on and off each press, if the PC is running.

Hi all

I have been trying to create an Excel macro that deletes only the check mark inside the check box albeit with no success. Is there a way to do this?? I have plenty of check boxes and it is taking me a lot of time to go into each one and delete only the check marks. It would be would be pretty neat to create a macro to delete the check marks in every single check box. If someone out there has figured out how to do it, it would be a great help.

Thanks

Mario
