Slow slow slow laptop, is it a virus and how do I find it?

Question: Slow slow slow laptop, is it a virus and how do I find it?

Hello all!

My laptop is running really really REALLY slowly lately.  I haven't downloaded anything new but when I look at my task manager I see so many things running.  I don't want to go in and just start deleting things b/c I am sure I would end up deleting something important.  Tried to run windows update and it didn't run   Every time I try and do anything ( Especially online) pages don't load, pc freezes, it is really frustrating. Any help is appreciated

Preferred Solution: Slow slow slow laptop, is it a virus and how do I find it?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Thanks guys, I haven't done this in awhile so please bear with me...

After an older system of mine seemed to suddenly slow down and a current Symantec scan came up with nothing I ran Housecall on my system. Housecall found Adware_aeropopups and Adware_memwatcher before Housecall itself slowed down to nothing and died. I could not use Housecall to clean the malware/spyware cookies. I ran the Java Housecall plug-in; not the ActiveX. I then ran defrag and that helped some for the system so it seemed. However, the internet is stll quite slow on many occasions.

I ran Hijackthis and have pasted the log below along with a few system details. I only see GoogleDesktop in the log below as a potential problem. Please help! Everything else seems normal to my untrained eye. I will try adaware next if it is still free to use.

I'm running Windows XP Pro SP3 and IE 7.0.5730.11
I run Symantec Norton AV and have installed Avast in an effort to access another AV library. I know they will conflict from time to time and will remove one of them later.

Concurrent wil all this, something is resetting my trackpad settings back to default on every reboot. Solved this last summer by removing something from Logitech, but the problem is back now. Weird.

Internet MUCH slower than usual, responses sluggish on- and offline. System fans kick on within 2-3 minutes of startup. I've run all the usuals - McAfee, Ad-Aware, SpyBot, disk cleanup, and chkdsk. Hard boot after all that, then ran HijackThis:

Hello hello. Windows 7 Home Premium, 3GB RAM, Intel Core i7 on a Dell Studio 1457 laptop.Refer to the topic HERE for boopme's history on my malware checks from a few days ago and reinstallation of Avira 2012 as it stopped working with similar symptoms as described below. The problems that exist now are,Video files begin to lag at random during playback. One moment it's playing fine for a good while and suddenly, lagging. Same issue in Windows Media Player, Media Player Classic and VLC Media Player. Also, VLC takes an unbearably long time to execute.Photoshop takes too long to execute, then lags when I'm working on large files.Firefox slows down and freezes at random as well.I run Ccleaner regularly and defrag once a month. How do I get my programs running normally again?

Hello smart folks,

My Dell Inspiron 9300 laptop used to boot up in under a minute. Now, it takes several minutes and any time I run a program it takes a long time for them to boot up. And, heck, I see delays in programs while they're in use.

I just upgraded from 512MB to 2 GB of RAM hoping that would help. It didn't.

I've followed your steps and I think my computer is a lot safer now. Thank you.

I run Norton antivirus.

I feel like the biggest contributor to my laptop's slowness is Enterprise Office 2007. Some little searching magnifying glass seems to always be on and my computer's hard drive seems to grind a lot even when the computer should be sitting there idle.

If I open a Microsoft Office 2007 program like Word, Excel, or Outlook, they open REALLY slowly.

Also, can you please recommend a good registry scrubber? I like freeware, but I'll buy it if I must. That RegCure program seems like a scam. Below is my HiJack This log. I've also included the start up log below it since my start up is so slow.

Thank you.

So yeah, I've these problems for the past couple days. My browsers (Opera and Firefox) used to load pages quickly, but now they're painfully slow. Opera lags and freezes often; Firefox doesn't, but it still takes a very long time to load pages.

I'm also getting these occasional "invisible ads," even when I don't have a browser open. I can hear the ads but I can't see them.

Also, I sometimes get redirected to unwanted sites. This mostly happens when I click on a search result in Google.

Here are some things I've done:

-Ran SUPERantispyware (I can post the log(s) if needed)
-Defragged hard drive
-Cleaned cache, cookies, etc. on both browsers

Answer:Slow browser, slow internet, random audio ads: virus?

Hello and welcome to Computer Hope Forum. My name is Dave. I will be helping you out with your particular problem on your computer. 1. I will be working on your Malware issues. This may or may not solve other issues you have with your machine.2. The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.3. If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.4. Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans while I am helping you.5. It is important that you reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.6. Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.7. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear. If you can't access the internet with your infected computer you will have to download and transfer any programs to the computer you're using now and transfer them to the infected computer with a CD-RW or a USB storage device. I prefer a CD because a storage device can get infected. If you use a storage device hold the shift key down while inserting the USB storage device for about 10 secs. You will also have to transfer the logs you receive back to the good computer using the same method until we can get the computer back on-line. *********************************************************************Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your Desktop. Please close all open programs and internet browsers.Double click on a... Hi RoThiSePh, Our apologies for the delay. If you still require help, please post a new fresh log so I can see if anything has changed. If you have not done so already, please do the initial cleanup steps in the following instructions before posting your new log: Preparation Guide For Use Before Posting A Hijackthis LogI see a little on there that needs looking into and some of the programs you mention I agree need to be uninstalled. I just need to see what's changed since your post and if you include a list of installed programs I can assist you with that and it will possibly give some insight into removing some malware.Open HijackThis. If you still have the New Users Quickstart screen enabled, click Open Misc Tools Section. If you just have the regular opening screen, click the Config... button then the Misc Tools button. Now click the Open Uninstall Manager button, then the Save List button. Save the list somewhere convenient like My Documents and then the list will open in Notepad. Copy and Paste that list into your next reply to this post then we'll get started.

Hello all,

First off, I have been searching these forums for several days and have seen a number of people reporting slow wireless connections in Windows 7. Which was comforting, knowing I was not alone - but unfortunately I've yet to find the answer in any of the older posts, so I am hoping that making one of my own will help resolve this. Sorry to add to the noise, but I'm kind of out of ideas. Now for the problem:

Initially my wireless speed in Windows 7 was comparable to what I got under XP - mainly 54mbps but occasionally dropping lower, but nothing out of the ordinary. However, I've recently noticed that I am never going about 18mpbs now on my wireless connection, and the actual speed seems to be bottlenecked even slower than that. Example, here is a speed test I just ran.

Here is the results of my ipconfig /all

Answer:Slow Wireless Speeds - Laptop is fine, Desktop is SLOW

I almost don't believe it, because I could have sworn I had tried this in the past. I changed the broadcast channel from 10 to 1 after doing another WiFi channel search and seeing a new network broadcasting on 8. I was still getting good signal strength, but I figured it couldn't hurt. About 30 seconds later my wireless speed jumped back up to 54mbps and this is the speed test now.

Glad its fixed, but I almost don't trust that this will stay fixed. Going to leave this open for a day or two to see if anyone else has any suggestions that I might want to try.

hi all,

it's been a long time since I have had to post something about my problems in these forums. Well over a year as I have had my laptop for over a year now. This may seem like a similar thread to most that have been put up recently but I think it is quite different.

Ever since I have upgraded to IE8 I have noticed Vista be very slow. It could be to do with IE8 but I think that the slowness of my machine has been since before then...according to my wife. Has her facebook shennanegans broken the laptop???!

Here is a list of problems I am getting:
Long start up times. They aren't bothering me that much, just seem to be a bit longer than normal.
Very long time from when Vista has loaded and I can actually do somehting (15 minutes just now to access an mp3 on my desktop and it kept skipping for about 5 minutes before it stops skipping and playing the track normally)
Extremely slow at logging onto the internet. I mean that it takes minutes, literally minutes for IE8 to even display the very first internet page. After that it is slow, but not as bad...still frustrating though.
Changing between programs seems to take a few seconds.
Accessing my computer or my documents is like a game of russian roulette, will it let me or won't it.....900 on it won't!!!!
On mp3 tracks, if you go back to a certain point in the track it will take a few seconds to actually complete the task

I have about 26gig free on my hard drive. But about 80 gig is used up for phot... Read more

Yes I do regular maintenance and run virus/spyware/malware etc scans. Lately my computer has been ridiculously slow to the point where I sometimes can't log on and have to do a system restore in-order to use it. If I install Windows updates my computer just does not log on. all my scans com up negative every time ( except for tracking cookies). I have no explanation for this ( I did look at the slow pc list none of it seems to apply). What on earth is going on?

Any ideas on how i can solve thse problems?

Answer:Slow Laptop..slow starting up and loding internet pages

1. Software
a) Clear out all temporary files and folders -- use CCleaner http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download
b) Scan for malware spyware and viruses --Free Anti Spyware :-
Malwarebytes http://www.malwarebytes.org/
Superantispyware http://www.superantispyware.com/download.html
Free Antivirus software
MicroSoft Security Essentials http://www.microsoft.com/security/products/mse.aspx
Avast http://www.avast.com/en-gb/free-antivirus-download
c) Clean the registry -- Use the tool in Crap Cleaner its very safe and also allows you to back up the registry first.
d) Pagefile (Virtual Memory) -- Right click MY Computer - select properties - Advanced tab - Performance -
advanced tab - Virtual memory click change, you can put the page file on a different drive (if you have one), click
custom size and set Initial size to one and a half times the amount of memory you have fitted i.e. 512MB memory
= set to 768MB, set maximum to double your memory amount i.e. 512MB memory = 1024MB click ok.
If your hard drive is full and there is not enough room for the pagefile this can slow down, freeze or even cause the
PC to crash (restart).
e) Cut down on the programs that load at start up -- Start - Run type msconfig - start up tab- untick everything except for firewall, antivirus and antispyware
and the services that run in the background. http://www.blackviper.com/
2. Hardware

Hello,
Today, I was messing around with a PS2 emulator (PCSX2) on my computer, and when I decided to restart the computer to move some files (the file explorer was saying "this folder is in use by another program"), my computer took a whopping three minutes to boot! When I was finally in Windows, the file explorer was very slow (I had to refresh each time I moved something), the desktop had the same problem, the trash bin took about 5 minutes to respond, and the shut down button didn't work anymore. These problems all started at one moment, and haven't occured before. Other things like the internet and games worked just fine. Since, I've restarted a couple of times and come across to solutions for pretty much each individual problem. But I haven't come across a solution for all of these problems at once.
I built this system myself, about a month ago. My specs are: Intel i5-6500, Sapphire RX480 Nitro+ OC 4G, 8GB Crucial RAM, MSI B150M Mortar, Crucial BX200 240GB SSD (Windows is installed on this drive) and a 1TB WD Black Caviar HDD. If you need any other specs, I'm happy to provide. I am at a loss as to what to do!

Answer:Slow boot, slow file explorer, slow trash bin and no shut down

Welcome to the TenForums.

If you could describe messing around. Were you dual booting to this emulator or did you visualize it within Windows?

If in Windows, assuming you have restore points enabled, I would perform a system restore to an earlier time.

Assuming that goes well I would look at Macrium Reflect to Image your system , at least your boot drive. You can run regularly so you versions of your boot drive.

If you were dual booting let the forum know.

Hey everyone.

So my PC began acting up and I have a feeling it started when I was looking for video editing software and came across a video editor called "softonicdownloader_for_Windows-live-movie-maker.exe" I'm sure it's a virus or something because problems with my PC began shortly after getting this.
I deleted and uninstalled what I could, went into safe mode and ran the latest updated version of malware bytes. It got 5 infected files that were deleted.

After doing so, I had little success. Here are still the issues with the PC

#1 Desktop and start menu programs won't respond. Can be clicked and the arrow with hourglass will show up, but with no response. Sometimes clicking on them will freeze and lock up. Sometimes they will, but it is only after several manual shut downs. If it does respond (such as clicking on internet explorer), upon closing out the program it will not respond again without a manual shut down.

#2 Boot up is a lot slower, will stay on "Loading your personal settings". Takes longer than it usually would.

#3 Shut down is slower or will freeze. All desktop items and desktop will be clear, leaving just background, as usual before a shut down, and will freeze leaving the arrow cursor still there. Sometimes it can get past this after a wait and get stuck on the blue "Windows is shutting down" screen. And never shut down. This requires a manual shut down by pressing the PC's button.

#4. Start menu ico... Read more

For some odd reason, in the past 4 weeks, my streaming video has become VERY slow, and I do not know why. I have a high-speed cable connection, the same I have had for the past 6 months. It is slow, sound-with-stil-images and/or constantly rebuffering, and this is true with WIndows Media, Winamp, Realplayer and even Flash videos (on YouTube for example). I cannot take it anymore. I tried this Hijackthis thing, and this is my log:

Hey, basically computer's been a bit slow and tried clearing some stuff and done other things, but still no luck, to make things worse internet's been a lot slow and when using either firefox and internet explorer. For example when going on youtube some videos would freeze in the middle and i would have to reload the page, and sometimes takes ages to load a page.

So here's my DDS log and hopefully the problem can be diagnosed, thank you.

You guys have been very helpful in the past so I thought I'd come to you preventatively this time. My Dell laptop is five years old and I won't be able to purchase a new one for another year or two. As far as I know, I don't have any major virus or problems, but gradually my computer has become very slow, and sometimes it freezes. Loading photos on Facebook is a common situation it freezes in, but it happens with other things too. It also starts up very slow, and it can take awhile for windows to open.

So far I have tried a number of fixes: System Restore, defragmenting, freeing up space on the hard drive, rearranging items on hard disk, deleting programs I know I don't use, scanning and removing spyware/viruses with Kaspersky/Spybot Search & Destroy/Ewido Anti-Malware/Spyware Blaster, and deleting temp files as suggested by a similar thread in this forum. I deleted Temp files from these locations:

Hi,
My laptop(Win7) takes a long time to bootup. First it takes me to the windows logo screen and then it goes to a black screen and stays there for atleast two minutes before it gives me the login screen and then it takes another two minutes or so to before the desktop is loaded up. Also when I scan the computer with bitdefender for viruses, it takes around a day to do a full system scan and did not find any viruses. I have downloaded iobit driver updater and updated all the drivers, but that did not fix the problem. I have also installed iobit malware fighter and malwarebytes anti-malware and both scan came back negetive, The iobit performance monitor shows that the ram useage is 61% or higher all the time.

Any suggestions to fix this would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

New to the forum. My usual tech forum has been off line since early yesterday evening so I thought I'd try here as I am pulling my hair out a little.
I've a laptop I'm trying to do up to sell. Hardly used it for a while as I have a slightly better one.
I was trying to sell it with WinXp 32 bit on it and then discovered that support ends for that soon. It ran fine with XP btw. Anyway, I got a genuine but cheap Win7 Pro SP1 64bit disc with unused COA from a seller on Amazon. It installed fine but I didn't finish the drivers install or updates, just checked that the COA would be verified. And it was fine.
Then I turned it on to finish it off and it started misbehaving. I ran memory and hard drive diags and the hard drive was on the blink. So I stuck in the drive from my newer laptop and formatted and fresh installed. No problems.
Went through all the updates and driver installs. And at then end of it the machine was painfully slow. I think its a driver issue and will play around a bit before I ask more about that. But when I was trying to find the problem I noticed that when in windows it reports that the installed memory is 4.00GB and then in brackets it says usable memory is only 2.98Gb. It says this whether I tell the BIOS to use 128 or 256 for the graphics. Googling I found a bit of advice to go into msconfig and then to the advanced boot options and make sure a check box called 'Maximum memory' was unchecked. I did this but on every reboot it rechecks.
The main BIOS screen... Read more

Answer:Problems with Win 7 laptop (RAM and slow boot/slow in general)

Well, I've been playing with the settings in msconfig. I seem to have partially solved the memory issue and got the startup time down a bit.
In msconfig I used selective startup with load system services and load startup items checked and use original boot config unchecked. In the advanced boot options I was then able to uncheck the max memory box and it then stays unchecked on reboot. Windows now reports 4.00gb installed memory and 3.73gb usable, which is correct considering the graphics memory. Boot time from pressing the power button to log on screen is 45s.
As I was typing the above I was still playing around with the machine. I ran the Windows assessment and it hard locked when running the direct 3d aero assessment. I had to use the power button to power off. Restarted, boot time seemed too long but I didn't time it. Got into windows, checked the msconfig settings and they hadn't changed. Choose to shutdown. It said it was installing an update, which is daft because I have had the wifi turned off through all of this and the NIC is not plugged in! Timed it when I turned it back on and boot time up to 59s. Shut down again. Upon startup boot time now at 49s. I'm going slightly mad.

Answer:Help! Slow Computer, Slow Internet. Slow, Slow, Slow!

Hi MaryJane,Sorry for the delay, this forum is really swamped right now. I don't see any positive signs of malware in your log, although there is one thing that I am unsure about. I'll get to that in a minute. Before we do rootkit scans and use some other tools to confirm that malware is not the problem, let's do a quick check of resources.Press <Ctrl>-<Alt>-<Del> to open Task Manager, then click on the Processes tab. Place a check next to Show processes from all users. Note the numbers at the bottom, CPU usage should be running at 0 to no more than five percent if your system is idle (no background tasks running). If that is not the case, scroll down and see if any of the processes is running at a high percentage of CPU usage. On a normal system at idle the System Idle Process should show about 98 percent, meaning nothing else is using the CPU. The next columns to the right, memory usage and peak memory usage, may also show something out of line if one process is using a large amount of memory. If you see anything showing high CPU usage or high Memory usage, make a note of it.Now, click the Performance tab. The key numbers here are in the Commit Charge box -- The Total and Peak figures; and in the Physical Memory box, the Total figure. Make a note of these three numbers. I would like to see them, but I can tell you what I'm looking for: basically, any time the Commit Charge exceeds the total physical memory, Windows will have to constantly swap d... Read more

Hello,
I've had this laptop for a year and a half now and for some time I've been having issues with performance. The wifi speed is really slow even when I'm on my school's wifi. My friend got something around 130mbps on his macbook and when I tested mine I barely got 20mbps. My disk usage used to be at 100% all the time, but right now that's not happening, and I don't know why. Usually webpages load at a decent speed but sometimes it gets pretty hung up and takes a good 10 seconds to load. I've gone on the product page for my laptop and made sure to install all of the latest drivers, but nothing seems to be helping anything. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the Atheros Wifi drivers many, many times and I have not seen anything fix the issue.

Here is a link to my laptop's product page
Satellite L55t-B5278 Support | Toshiba

Also, I'm using windows 10

I'm not an idiot with computers and I've solved countless problems on my own with my desktop, but I just can't seem to find any fix for this at all. Pretty desperate at this point, I would appreciate any help I can get.

Okay I'm going to do a full PC check but all my systems seem fine as of yesterday. A little background to help others help me I'm on a Windows Small Business Server 2003 environment with no other server connection but one machine, I have 3 shared drives created on the server and am running Shared Point Services 2.0 as well and all my computers on the network have a login script assigned to them when booting onto the network so their drives are automatically mapped. Oh and I have POS old Sony laptop running as a proxy using Winproxy 5.0, but it has about a gig of speed and 512 RAM and the connection goes: in from the outside, to the proxy, line directly to server, server assigns ISP's by DHCP internally.

My computer is a Dell Optiplex 2600
P4 2.0 gig

Here's a question to start from another thread I posted: About two months back or so I noticed if I put cd's into my PC at work I must have downloaded a rootkit or something because now I cannot play some cd's that I can play on my home computer and others in the office. Now in the future is is safer to burn MP3's on an external harddrive and listen that way or avoid Sony cd's?

Now to the problem, I put in a burned cd this morning it starts up WMP 10 fine and I'm listening to Back in Black then all of a sudden my computer freezes. Crashes my financial program which I think nothing of because I am using Master Builder 11.2 by ... Read more

Erm hi. Last night my PC was absolutely fine, and today it seems to be completely broken.

I turned the computer on today and received a "malware detected" message from Avast antivirus. I tried to move to chest/delete and the message kept popping up. I looked up NewDot malware on the internet (which is what Avast was detecting) and it said that NewDot prevents access to the internet, which seemed about right as i was having to use my laptop to access the internet as the time, because the other computer wasn't working properly. It said that i could get rid of it easily my going to Add/remove programs and uninstalling it, which i did.

After this i restarted the computer and the loading time was exceptionally slow, i thought it had frozen, but it was just taking 5-10minutes to load. When it finally did load i tried to access the internet through a number of different browsers, but none of them would load. I tried to open some other applications too, and they wouldn't load either. I went to msconfig and disabled the majority of my startup items, and then restarted the computer. Once again the loading time was slow, and no applications would start. I then tried to do a defrag, but the program didn't work. Then i tried system restore, and the application didn't load, i came back to the computer 5-10minutes later and it had loaded, but it came up with an error that said something along the lines of "system restore is unable to protect your computer, please restar... Answer:Slow boot, slow application loading, slow shutdown

I don't know if there's an edit option on this site, but i couldnt find it.

Anyway, i've found a website dedicated to this newdot "foistware" as it is known: http://www.cexx.org/newnet.htm

It says that deleting the .dll will result in a broken internet connection. IT also mentions that sometimes uninstalling it will still leave errors in winsock.
This seems to be what has happened to me, so i'm going to try the LSP fix utility available for download on that site. The problem is that this laptop has no floppy disk drive, and i don't have a UBS storage device available.

I was just wondering, if and when i do repair the LSP problems, could that be what is causing my system to run slowly? I hope so.

Thanks again.

Hello.

Win XP Pro SP3
Pentium D CPU @ 3.00 GHz
1G ram

This machine is on a server-based network in a nonprofit. I am the "IT person" but frankly, I am not an IT professional... I'm in charge of it simply because I have some basic "do it yourself" skills!

The machine was running very slowly for the past week, with hangs that lasted from 30 seconds to a few minutes, but always did come back. Shut down was taking over 2 minutes; restart was taking nearly 5 minutes. Programs such as MS Word 2003 opened very slowly. Our employee who uses this didn't mention all this to me until...

During an MS auto update this past Wednesday, when XP rebooted to add 11 updates, the machine hung entirely. It took 6 hours before the first update was installed, then sat another 2 hours showing "2 of 11" and "do not turn off or restart your machine."

I contacted MS and after heehawing around for a while, the person said to go ahead and do a hard shut down. It rebooted, slightly faster, and did not hang again, so last night, I was able run Ccleaner, then Spybot Search and Destroy and Malwarebytes. No malware. The machine normally runs Vipre Enterprise (which will show as SBEAgent in the log below); the Vipre log for the past three days for the machine is clean.

I also scanned the disk for errors (none found) last night. And, I changed the page file size so that its virtual memory is now 2500 to 3048.

I then manually updated the remaining 9 OS up... Read more

Alright, so today i replaced my dad's powersupply and got an "Error Loading OS" Message for his system when it previously had XP on it. So i said forget messing with it ill just put vista on it and call it a day.

After putting the vista disk in it seemed to go pretty slow compaired to how it was on mine. But in the end it took about 1hr to 1hr and 1/2 to install completely. After installing it took forever to do the first boot up and after it booted i could not move the mouse more than one direction every 2 minutes or so. The system would apparently freeze or become completely bogged down for no reason.

So, this is a fresh install of Vista on a fairly good machine. Any reason why it is running as though it has the worst specs in the world?

PS: It runs fine in Safe Mode.....

The System configuration is as follows:

OS: Vista Ultimate 64bit
MoBo: Asus P5NSLI
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E6600
Graphics Cards: Nvidia 8600GT x2 SLI
Hard Drives: 3 various, one 80, one 200g, one 300g
RAM: 4gigs of corsair or something of the form.. namebrand to say the least

I Cant think of what else might help... it is doing this for NO REASON what so ever that i can find.

Running older PC Clone 2.0 Ghz Dual CPU Pentium, 1GB Ram Win XP Home Edition system.

While navigation on Internet Explorer or Google Chrome, system runs extrememly slow and/or crashes. When using applications such as Itunes, Email, or simply opening up Word and other applications, it runs very slow and almost seems to stop. The IE7 that was on the computer had changed to an operate with add-ons off as a result of the infection. I downloaded and reinstalled IE7 and this seems to have fixed that problem for the time being. MalwareBytes and SuperAntiSpy icons dissappeared from my desktop. When trying to use them from the Start / Menu options the programs no longer worked. I reinstalled them and they appear to work fine now. However, the system still seems to run very slow over all and its performance is greatly hindered.

Next, I ran free version of SuperAntiSpyware and all it detected was a couple Adware cookies. Secondly, I ran free version of Malware Bytes Anti-Malware and it detected PUP.GamePlayLab infections located in the Registry Key: HKLM\SOFTGWARE\Microsoft\Windows.... These files were removed and quarantined by MWB. Thirdly, I ran Old Timer's TFC and then rebooted the computer and it appeared to run a little faster, but still sluggish while using IE7. So, finally, I ran ESET Free Online Scanner, and it detected "Win32/Toolbar.Babylon and Win32/TopMedia.a" virus infections. Scan took about 2 1/2 hours. I set it to search the drives/ar... Read more

I have been following HIJACK THIS for a bit, and understand that after running a program such as Norton or AVAST or any other like it even after cleaning the system there may still be a problem. I still have a problem. My 7 Y/O son was on my wifes computer (COMPAQ) and ended up with a virus, I had to do a reinstall, which sucked. Now there seems to be the same virus on it. Whenever I run Avast (only anti on the computer) it finds something. I cannot find where it may be in the registry. See HIJACK this following. I have a Dell laptop 1505. Since my son started to install games and who knows what else, the time it takes to boot up and run is ridiculous. It will also freeze up. What can I do to bring it back to how it use to be. Also it will not restore to an earlier time.

Thanks

Hi
I'm helping my sister with her painfully slow laptop. I was able to get it to speed up some by running malware removal tools like Malwarebytes but it appears something still exists since MS essentials gets turned off.
Let me know what logs are needed. I recently installed AVG 2013 but it didn't find anything.
Thanks!
Jim

I have a Toshiba Laptop, windows 7 OS. During the past 2 days my computer suddenly got incredibly slow, can barely open folders without them freezing.
When i open task manager on the whole it says its barely using memory, and cpu stays under 25%, except for the occasional spike. Iv gone through the prgrams running and dont see anything suspicous.

I ran malwarebytes and kaspersky scans, with nothing.(by the way i have kaspersky as my virus protection.) Then i ran rkill, and it stops the virus. Temporarily. After a restart things get slow, then slower, then back to where i started. Same with combofix, my computer was great and then it slowed and slowed untill it was a slug.
Now, the first time i ran rkill a window popped up saying Pev.exe has stopped working. When i ran rkill later i didn't get that message, i haven't seen it since.
And a really odd thing happens, when the computers really slow, and i open a folder there a application call " pev ". After rkill does its thing its gone. i have seen it in 2 folders so far, but when i go back its gone. Also, the date there created is minutes before i open the folder.
request the combofix log and ill post it.
Any ideas would be much appreciated, i have never seen anything like this.

Answer:Pev.exe virus? slow computer,cant find/kill it

pev.exe
rkill.reg
ncmd.cfxxe

These three files are temporary files that are created every time you run rkill.exe. They only last as long as the program runs and are used to search and kill malware processes. This is the reason they are created for only a few minutes and then disappear.

Hi and thank you for taking an interest in my problem.

I have a lenovo ideapad y560 0646, lately my PC have been slowly down drastically, but now after I done a few things I realized it is impossible to do anything past 5 minute using the computer. It can't even close any applications much less open anything, mouse works fine but everything will stop responding.

PC info
win 7 64-bit
intel i7
not sure what else to list that's necessary.

Currently I have tried many things
1) updated all my drivers including bios etc
2) tested for over heating since it is very hot these days, cleaned dust changed thermal paste. Now only going at about 50~60c idle, it is pretty hot outside still.
3) did virus scans with malwarebytes and avast, MSE, Trend HouseMicro, and ESET online
4) went in safe mode and used Rkill then checked with ESET and avast.

So far everything came up negative and my computer is pretty much in a permanent state of lock down, but fortunately the safe mode still works so I can post this message. Please help with this problem. I am not new to viruses and I really don't want to reinstall my PC again but I simply can't find a way to solve this. Thank You!

Hi there,my name is Marius and I will assist you with your malware related problems. Before we move on, please read the following points carefully.First, read my instructions completely. If there is anything that you do not understand kindly ask before proceeding.Perform everything in the correct order. Sometimes one step requires the previous one.If you have any problems while following my instructions, Stop there and tell me the exact nature of your problem.Do not run any other scans without instruction or add/remove software unless I tell you to do so. This would change the output of our tools and could be confusing for me.Post all logfiles as a reply rather than as an attachment unless I specifically ask you. If you can not post all logfiles in one reply, feel free to use more posts. If I don't hear from you within 3 days from this initial or any subsequent post, then this thread will be closed.Stay with me. Hey guys, thanks for any suggestions ahead of time.

This issue is regarding my wife's Dell Inspiron E1705 laptop...running Vista. It has been running slower and slower over the past few months and I can't figure out what is causing it.

We have a subscription for McCaffee but I can't get it to update for some odd reason.

Mcaffee, Superantispyware, and Malwarebytes havent found any issues.

Outside of the computer running fairly slow and just seeming to be bogged down...I have noticed:
1. The icons on the desktop are spaced out quite a bit. Normally when you organize them, they form into rows and columns...now they are doing that...with large gaps between them. for example...the top row has two icons...a gap which would fit one icon...another two icons / shortcuts...a gap...another two, gap...and then finally three. The gap also takes place between the rows.
2. Also with the icons /shortcuts...there is a white exclamation point within a red circle on about half of them...never used to be on there before.
3. Im getting a error message when i go to any website, and i think its java related...the error message says: Exc in ev handl: TypeError: oSAPlg.Root.log is not a function. I've also seen it say something else, but havent been able to catch it to write it down.

I didn't see anything in the 'before you post' thread about hijackthis logs....but I figured it couldnt hurt:

Hello people on tenforums, I am losing my mind, and I am deferring to your expertise. About a year and a half ago I got my mother a Dell Inspiron 15 7569 2-in-1. This computer, being a typical Dell, started showing issues as soon as I told the Dell where they can sell their extended warranty. It was subtle at first, a few crackles in the audio, excessive slow down under load, didn't bother my mother. Eventually all sound coming through the internal speakers sounded like it was going at one half speed, and filled with static, the computer was slowing down. The slowing down wasn't bothering her, the audio interfered with her work so she bought an external portable speaker set, and they worked, until the computer reached an even slower stage and the audio started having issues with audio from the 3.5mm port. At this point I reinstalled Windows, I first used the Windows refresh function to keep the data, still having the same issues, so I did a completely clean install. Still the same issue. I decided it's the hardware, the hinges broke anyways so those had to be replaced regardless. Bought a new motherboard because that would get the motherboard, audio card, and CPU all at once (and of course a back cover with hinges and a new antenna). Replaced them all, same issues. Replaced the RAM, same issues. I put her SSD in my laptop (since its an M.2 Sata III SSD) and no issues. I couldn't test another drive in her computer because the only other M.2 Drive I have is NVMe and her laptop ... Read more

Answer:Slow Slow Slow Browser, Applications Failing

How long has it been since Windows was installed? Have you done any regular file maintenance, like deleting old files you don't need anymore, deleting temp files, uninstalling programs you don't use anymore, deleting months-old system restore points, etc, and then running scandisk, and lastly, running defrag? Maybe it's not a virus. You may just be running out of room on your hdd.

I just spent an hour on the phone with Dell and he's telling me I need to do a clean install of my original operating system in order to get my system back up to speed. No way I'm doing that, and I know you guys can help get things back to normal. So it is a windows problem that is making system run very, excrutiatingly slow - I mean frustratingly slow.

What should I do first? Would a hi-jack log be helpful? I am running one now to paste onto this email.

For a year, my computer has had no taskbar, desktop icons, and has been a real pain to deal with. I haven't gotten it fixed because i'm constantly typing papers and Word still works so i haven't had the time to get someone to look at it.

So for a year, I have been living with the computer in its taskbar-less state, constantly hitting control alt delete and the new task bar to do my business. Now the damned thing won't let me install files, programs are acting up, and everything is very slow. When I open the install file, it appears in the processes list then instantly disappear. SpyBot and McAffee scans are ineffective, and i can't download and install the programs that the tutorials say too. Any help would be wonderful. I really don't want to nuke my harddrive and lose countless files. Also, my harddrive is divided into the C drive and D drive. The C drive only gets 20 Gb, while the D drive gets 140gb . The C drive is full of stuff, and I though I had deleted all the useless stuff but it is still full. Is there anyway to get more space alloted to the C drive? HELP!

Answer:No Taskbar, Can't Install Anything, Programs Won't Run, Slow Slow Slow

Try using the "chkdsk /f" in the run box to fix problems first. It can see if that is where you have a problem.

I'm running XP Pro with 512MB memory, but all seems to have slowed to a crawl. I'm also running AdAware, SpyBot and MS anti-Virus programmes as well as AVG Virus scan--I've been told that having a number of these programmes loaded isn't a problem as long as I don't run them simultaneously, but could that be my problem.

I'd be grateful if one of the experts on forum could have a look at the log below and let me know if there's an answer within.

Many thanks

I'm running Windows XP with an AMD Sempron 2.0 ghz Processor with 700MB Ram.

Firefox takes up all this computer power(I know that this is more common with the updated Firefox's but in my case it's still to an extreme). Firefox will stay open after I close it and I will have to use Windows Task Manager to fully close. I've switched to Google Chrome and it is quicker.

Any Java usage slows the computer down incredibly. Even in Chrome it's slow. I can't switch between programs nearly as smoothly as before. Basically everything takes forever now and my computer seems to strain under the workload of what use to be basic usage.

I found two Trojans with Kaspersky Trial scan and I thought that fixed the problem(I eventually got rid of Kaspersky because it was making my slow computer even slower.) Unfortunately I never wrote down their names because my parent dropped me on my head frequently when I was a child.

I've run all the scans and nothing has come up(to my basic and infantile computer knowledge). One problem with the scans was the MGtools would open briefly and the window would only just flash and then dissapear and nothing would run. I blame mostly Jesus for this but Buddha in his infinite wisdom and humbleness has also taken some of the blame.

Hi there,
I am new here. I am also relatively new to Vista. I love XP SP2 but I got vista business with my new tablet (1GB RAM, T7250).
I have a huge problem with vista's explorer. When I use desktop search on XP and select a pdf file, it appears INSTANTLY in the preview - which is btw fully equipped adobe reader, so you can further search the file, copy from it etc.
Now in vista, when I click the file, my computer hangs for about 3 minutes, and then the file appears.
I hope this is not normal. What can be possibly wrong? I updated adobe reader but it didn't help.
So, why is it so slow? This makes the system useless for me.
Also, can I change the appearance of the reader in the preview pane so that it offers full interface, just like in XP?
Can anyone help me, please?
Thanks, skl

Answer:preview pane painfully SLOW SLOW SLOW

I'm not an expert, but 1GB is not a lot to be running Vista with.
Have you thought of upgrading with more RAM Memory?
I think i saw here recently that Vista can easily take up to 3GB of RAM Memory.

I have followed ALL of the step-by-step instructions, as advised, before posting. Here are my specs: Win XP Media Center Edition; Version 2002; SP 2; AMD Athlon 64 processor; 3400+; 2.39 Ghz; 896 MB of RAM (anyone want to also tell me why this is when the front of my pc says "1024 MB RAM"??). My problems are my pc is ridiculously slow - this includes web browsing and just generally doing anything on here; super-slow startups and shutdowns. I ran pc-cillin, no viruses or malware; ran lavasoft, had a couple of cookies I removed; spybot picked up nothing; panda picked up 3 instances of spyware but I didn't know what to do about it as it wanted me to buy it to remove them and I couldn't tell where they originated; etrust online scanner picked up nothing; windows defender picked up nothing. Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program. Reboot/logoff when prompted.

WARNING - CleanUp! will delete all files and folders contained within Temporary Directories. If you knowingly have items you would like to keep that are stored in these locations; Move Them Now!!!

sorry, if this not the right place please move. I did many google searches cant seem to find the issue Im having, or maybe lack of the right key searches. You guys are my last hope.
I will try to explain my problem as clearly as I can. And so sorry about my bad grammar and spelling, trying to post this asap.

first off give small history of my PC. I bought my PC new Sept 2001. A HP Pavilion with 1.3 ghz, 256ram, and a 55gig hard-drive originally came with WinMe, since then I upgraded to XP. I kept my PC case clean, didn't try to install programs my PC couldn't handle, didn't go to any sites that knew were bad with viruses and such also had Malwareytes/spybot/avast/hijackthis to use, didnt install any toolbars, and tried not to have many programs open at the same time. I basically kept my PC simple with use.

Anyways around June I noticed some odd slowdowns
While playing Winamp and running a torrent with speeds of more than 400+ the audio would become choppy. This also happen when I would open FF, IE or any program while running Winamp, the audio would be choppy.

Extracting 700mb files from Winrar would take around 8mins

Playing Youtube, WMP, of VLC videos would be slow and choppy.

Transferring files from one PC to another over a crossover cable would take much longer. 4gigs of files would take about 20mins or so.

Virus scanners, Avast, Malwarebytes, and Spybot would also take much longer than usual.

So, about 2 weeks ago while my brother was on Youtube my... Read more

Hi there I've tried all your suggestions in http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/87058/slow-computerbrowser-check-here-first;-it-may-not-be-malware/ SSD didn't find anything with high threat.
Laptop is still very slow especially explorer based processes but also browsing (chrome).
I would appreciate if you could have a look at the logs and suggest what might be wrong.
Kind regards
Ivan

I have a Dell Precision M4600 laptop
OS is WIndows 7 Professional

As with other posts my system slowly started to under perform over the course of time.  There wa s no instance that i can recall that started it.  I have not run any backup.
All i have done is run Malwarebites anti Malware program and quarantined all items listed.  Still no improvments shown.
Not sure if the follwing is helpful but.

In Task  manager under Physical Memory it shows
Total     8750
Cached  488
Avail     7316
Free   6833
This is when operating under safe mode w/ networking.
Safe mode is the only way system operates well enough to post try to fix.

Thanks

Hi all,

I have a gateway 7405GX running Win XP home SP2, 80 gig HD with 9 free, 512 meg RAM, ATI Radeon Mobil 9600 card.

It is very slow to boot, taking perhaps two minutes to the desktop. It also runs very slow and choppy, it is not unusual for it to take 15 seconds just to populate the Control Panel window. This slow behavior continues throughout all applications. There seems to be more HD activity than I would expect.

I have run Ad-Aware and got a Adware.Gdown hit, I have also run AVG anti-spyware, and AVG anti virusand cleaned some small issues...
I have turned EVERYTHING on in msconfig and rebooted to run HJT. The log is posted below.... I have noticed a reference to Lexmark ... which I no longer have, and also Google Updater - which I am sure I do not want!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks to all

Answer:Slow Laptop think I have a virus

I see you have 9 Chrome tasks in that list you posted.  Sometimes Chrome gets hung up on my computer when I have a lot of tabs running with it.  In my case I think it's some of the Adobe add-ins (extensions) that do it.   What happens if you X out of Chrome?  Does the problem go away?  One thing I do when something like this happens is to do a C-A-D and start Task Manager.  From there I look to see what's using the most CPU and RAM.  I didn't see how much RAM you have, but if you're doing excessive paging, you could probably add more; it's cheap enough.

Good luck.

On June 3, 2015, I posted a thread called "Laptop running slow as molasses; could I have a virus?"  Broni helped me with many suggestions and it seemed to run a bit better.  Lately it is almost too slow to use.  The Task Manager screen shows that my memory (4 gigs) is not being used up but that 100% of my processor is in use all the time.  Hence the slowing down.  If I close the internet, it runs better but with Chrome, all the processor is taken up.  A lot of times it seems to be SvcHost or multiple Chrome.exe files running.

Hi everyone. Ok. So I have been having an issue with the speed of my laptop. It's mostly the internet that gets very slow. About like two weeks ago, my laptop got very slow. The next day I found that I had some updates for my computer. I updated my computer and it seemed fine. Then this past week, it got slow again! I did a disk cleanup, ran defrag, ran AVG and even installed another program called Ad-Aware and when that didnt bring anything up, I downloaded Malwarebytes. The only thing I've found is MyWebSearch stuff that looked fishy, but I guess Malwarebytes took care of it. I am a student who takes online classes and is using my laptop constantly everyday. I really need it to run smoothly like it always has before. I was thinking, well maybe it got slow over time from too much use, but in the past like 2 weeks I actually started noticing a dramatic change. I cant even watch a Youtube vid without having to pause it a few times for it to load. I wont even mention what it does to Hulu! Also, when a page loads, the pictures sometimes look all pixelated. Is that possibly a clue to what is wrong? Does anyone know what may be wrong with my laptop and if there is anything I can do? I've done some research and its like I've done just about everything that people have mentioned.

Also, my operating system is Vista and I have a Toshiba laptop. If anyone knows of anything I could do, I would appreciate it very much.
