Fingerprint reader stopped working immediately after Windows 10 Anniversary update (version 1607)

Question: Fingerprint reader stopped working immediately after Windows 10 Anniversary update (version 1607)

Hello. . .
I use the fingerprint reader to login to my Latitude E5550 every time. However, I was unable to do so after the latest Windows 10 update (version 1607).

It did still show in the Windows Device Manager (i.e., no "Unknown Device" listed)
I went into the DDP Console to try to register a new fingerprint (for troubleshooting), but it wasn't reading the swipes
I attempted to update to the latest firmware/drivers, but that only caused unknown devices to show up in the Device Manager (ControlVault Firmware v3.3.15.0 and ControlVault Drivers v3.3.14.68)
Switched back to the older driver (v3.0.48.26) and all devices were once again recognized

Any suggestions for how to get around this? It's not the end of the world, but I *really* like using the fingerprint reader (I paid extra for) to login. If I can provide additional helpful information, please let me know.
Thanks!

Preferred Solution: Fingerprint reader stopped working immediately after Windows 10 Anniversary update (version 1607)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi
Have seen several posts but no solutions. After a windows 10 update a couple of months ago, the fingerprint scanner stopped working. It recognises me but then says "your credentials could not be confirmed".
Microsoft have sent endless messages blaming the driver, the scanner etc etc. Finally they say it is an issue with the update, but they have not solution at this time. Good old Microsoft and their helpful updates, which you cannot avoid.
Anyone have the same problem and how did you fix it??
Thanks

Windows 10 Version 1607 driver signing changes - gHacks Tech News

(hit link ^^ for entire story, snippet below):

Microsoft announced recently that the upcoming version 1607 of Windows 10, known as the Anniversary Update, will only load kernel mode drivers that are digitally signed by Microsoft.

The change won't affect all systems however the company notes, as only new installations are affected in the beginning.

Starting with new installations of Windows 10, version 1607, the previously defined driver signing rules will be enforced by the Operating System, and Windows 10, version 1607 will not load any new kernel mode drivers which are not signed by the Dev Portal.

The list of exceptions to the new policy is long. Below is the most important information in regards to the new kernel mode drivers policy:
PCs upgraded to Windows 10 Build 1607 from a previous version of Windows (for instance Windows 10 version 1511) are not affected by the change.
PCs without Secure Boot functionality, or Secure Boot off, are not affected either.
All drivers signed with cross-signing certificates that were issued prior to July 29, 2015 will continue to work.
Boot drivers won't be blocked to prevent systems from failing to boot. They will be removed by the Program Compatibility Assistant however.
The change affects only Windows 10 Version... Read more

Answer:Windows 10 Version 1607 (Anniversary Update) driver signing changes

This is kind of old news in that this change was announced last year but got delayed. I'm not sure what the practical implications are in that anyone loading unsigned drivers probably doesn't have Secure boot on. This one is a non-issue.

Hello JRAllen72653 Welcome to the Ten Forums!

One advice I can provide here would be to try a different method for either update by upgrade or planned clean install which doesn't seem to be what you have been looking for. When the Redstone 1 update didn't even arrive here for 3 separate desktops as well as a recently new laptop where 10 came already on not seeing the update still lead to fail of the MC Tool to see the immediate online upgrade take place or create the usb media needed.

Twin solutions were then sought! The first in order to see all machines updated was to download the "windows.iso" by way of the MC Tool which equals both the 32bit and 64bit flavors for both the Home and Pro editions. We call that a "4 in 1" type of download that covers everyone.

The second item on the agenda did opt to use a 3rd party program not the Windows option to mount the iso downloaded onto each machine or run from a flash drive where the setup.exe main executable would be manually started to watch each upgrade install take place. Once all systems were set which included one desktop only lately being upgraded from 7 Home Premium to 10 Home and then still waiting for the update to go on before return to owner was to visit a MS download iso type page to grab both the 32bit and 64bit smaller Dual Edition iso downloads to keep onhand.

Hello all.
Running windows 10 pro 64 bit.
I've updated from Version 1511 to the anniversary update, 1607.
Or at least, I thought I did.
The update went well, no hiccups, no errors. Used windows update, let it downloaded and install and rebooted. Alas, system still shows OS Version 1511.
Used update again, same thing, rebooted, 1511.
Went to the windows site, downloaded the windows10upgrade9252.exe, ran it, same exact issue, rebooted, still showing version 1511.
Error logs show no issues. Disabled all external drives, turned off anti-virus, etc, repeated, rinsed, rebooted, still version 1511.
Only think I've not done is burned an ISO to DVD and updated from that.
Any clues as to what's going on?
Thanks!
Nelson Davis

Can you check to see what OS version you have? Check in settings > system > OS build. It should show something like 14393.5 or 14393.10

I've now tried installing the Windows 10 Pro Creator's Update twice, and both times my fingerprint reader stopped working for Windows Hello. I just get "Your credentials could not be verified". I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the driver (and I'm on the latest), removing and re-registering my fingerprint, and I've also tried the trick I saw suggested elsewhere of switching to a local account, then back to a Microsoft account. That works temporarily but as soon as I switch back to my MS account, it breaks again. I've rooted around the BIOS but everything seems fine. I have the same fingerprint set on startup and that still works fine; Windows just doesn't recognize it, either when it's passed on from the BIOS or when I try to do it again manually. Has anyone had this problem and managed to fix it *without* reverting permanently to a local account? I don't see why that should be necessary and it definitely isn't supposed to be. I have reverted back to the Anniversary Update both times because of this issue.

Does anyone have an HP Pro 3515 Desktop that will take the new Windows 10 Anniversary Update Version 1607 ? My HP 3515 works fine with the previous windows 10 version 1511, but will not update to ver 1607. I notice that HP has not currently tested HP 3515 for the latest update. Any help, or comments ?

Answer:Window 10 Anniversary Update Version 1607

Hi,Firstly I'd like to clarify: I'm not working for any hardware or software vendor. Your printer/scanner had been working perfectly for few years or even decades and now it won't do anything or only few things because of a new Operating system.Microsoft, Apple will never say "Warning: Using this new product, your existing hardware may NOT work at all". They only say their new products will blah blah ....They promise everything then put all the unhappiness, blames to hardware vendors.I believe developing new products is much cheaper than supporting older products and each product must have a life cycle, it must die loudly or quietly and the Operating systems will kill our hardware quicker. Many people just upgrade for a sake of the "bleeding edge", never know and/or research what the existing investments at home will work or not.Just my 2 cents.

I can no longer use or enroll finger prints on my T430s laptop running Windows 8.1!ThinkVantage Fingerprint Software is 6.0.0.8102.Sensor: TouchChip Fingerprint Coprocessor (WBF advanced mode). Driver version: 1.6.2.352.  Symptom: when trying to enroll a fingerprint, I get the message: 'Use a longer stroke when scanning your fingerprint,' the sensor light turns from green to blinking orange (3 times), then back to green. Same happens when when trying to enroll from Windows PC Setting/ Sign-in Options/ Fingerprint (Add). What I tried: uninstalling ThinkVantage Fingerprint Software and Driver (to include selecting 'Delete the driver software for this device'), rebooting, using Lenovo System Update to re-install ThinkVantage Fingerprint Software, rebooting. Have also tried to manually install previous versions of the Fingerprint Software to no avail.  Note: I had this similar problem in the past, since upgrading from Windows 8 to 8.1, but the steps above usually resolved it.  Has anybody encountered this issue? Any ideas for a solution? Many thanks!

Answer:Fingerprint reader stopped working - T430s, Windows 8.1

Try rebooting into BIOS Setup (reboot and press F1 at the Lenovo/ThinkPad logo screen).  Then change to the Security menu, Fingerprint option, and choose the option about "Reset Fingerprint Data".  Then press F10 to save and exit and boot back into Windows.  Then try to enroll your finger again.

I looked around the forums and found a number of threads discussing this issue with workarounds about driver issues that were supposed to have been fixed by driver release 4.5.240.0. Sorry to hear that but on all my systems with the latest update on Face Book works and opens ok
Have you tried uninstalling it completely from your system including any folders from Programs or Programs x86 on C Drive then do a restart.
Once you have done a restart go to the store and reinstall Face Book again.
Why I am advising this as it seems somehow your Face Book App has a bug in it
Let us know how you get on

Hi all, I'm not sure if this is the right place to post but feel free to let me know if this needs to be re-directed. I've had an Elitebook 840 G2 for about 2 months with Windows 10 installed. I frequently used the fingerprint reader to log-in. However, as of yesterday, the fingerprint reader no longer seems to be working. I'm unable to log-in with the reader and when I try to set up a new fingerprint, the reader doesn't read it. I tried looking for the fingerprint reader driver but that's not listed for my model anywhere. Any guidance for what next steps are would be great. Thanks!

The fingerprint reader on my W541 laptop stopped working.  It's been working for more than a year, and worked last week.  Now it's not working - not illuminated & doesn't read my fingerprint.  Going into 'Settings' (Windows 10), 'Accounts', & 'Sign-In Options', it says "Windows Hello is not available on this device".I believe 'Windows Hello' is the software that runs the fingerpront reader.Any ideas of what to look for to get this working again? I have not loaded any new software since last week (when the fingerprint reader was working). The last system update installed was:"Intel Corporation - Bluetooth - 11/14/2016 12:00:00 AM - 19.30.1646.853" - installed on 2/1/17 (4 days ago). The fingerprint reader worked OK after that update.

I have an X1 carbon just purchased in January of 2016.  it came with Windows 10 and and all off the updates from Lenovo and Windows have been downloaded and installed.  the device manager says the fingerprint scanner driver is up to date. The fingerprint reader no longer works.  I receive messages such as " try using a longer stroke" or "move your finger to the right".  It worked in the beginning, then it would take several strokes before it registerd and now it does not work at all.  I have tried to register a new print with Windows and after about 20 trys it tells me the finger is already registered.  Then I tried a different finger and I just keep getting the messages refered to above.  How can I fix this?

Answer:fingerprint reader stopped working

Try clearing the fingerprint sensor from BIOS Setup:

1.  Reboot
2.  Press F1 to enter BIOS Setup
3.  Change to the Security page, and then select the Fingerprint item
4.  Choose the option to Reset Fingerprint Data, and then wait for it to finish
5.  Press F10 to save/exit and reboot to Windows 10
6.  Delete your fingerprints and try enrolling again, from the Settings -> Accounts -> Sign-in Options screen

My fingerprint reader has stopped working again. It started working after the last Windows 10 update, but after some time it just stopped working. I got a message saying to "swipe my finger slowly". Other times it said to "swipe finger more to the left" But no matter how many times I tried the reader just did not recognized my fingerprint. Now the reader's light is not even visible when I swipe my finger. I have not updated Windows again since I'm waiting for the latest update of Windows Creator to be available for my laptop.  All the other available updates for my laptop were supposedly installed on 4-17-17 Any help? You can use the vista driver if you install it in compatibility mode. to do this right click the installer>properties>compatibility mode>check vista. then install

Windows update caused this problem on 22-12-2008 and I noticed this error last week.

Problem with Video Driver :
NVIDIA GeForce Go 6150 Video Driver - 7.15.11.5682
This is the video driver version for my HP tablet(HP Website). But windows update installed the latest version(7.15.11.7770) from NVIDIA. From that time onwards, my touch screen stopped working.
I contacted HP care and they advised me to follow these steps.
1) Uninstall the latest driver and install the 7.15.11.5682 driver by giving the video driver (devicemanager ->display adapter -> Nvidia 6150 -> uninstall)
2) Bios Flash (they provided the software)
3) Calibrate
I am done with the first two steps but still my touch screen is not recognizing the pen. So I couldn't calibrate.
When I contacted the HP care again, they are telling it may be because of hardware failure. My notebook is working perfectly except this touchscreen problem.

Again they asked me to do the driver installation in safe mode.
(Add/Remove Programs -> Remove only display adapter)
Driver installed successfully but in device manager it is showing the latest version.
I tried two times, but couldn't help. I can't install the older driver. pls help.

Today I started up my laptop, signed in using the fingerprint scanner, then checked for updates.  After updating (Lenovo Fingerprint Manger - 7/8 [32,63] (Version 4.5.266.0) and Lenovo Solution Center - 7 [64] (Version 2.4.003)) and rebooting the scanner stopped working. Upon running the device manager, uninstalling the device, rescanning, my laptop attempts to install the device driver and fails. How can I either uninstall the updates OR load the driver? This is not a hardware issue, it is something jacked up with either update.

Answer:B570 Fingerprint reader stopped working - need help

dimmaemmy,

I split your message off from the other thread that was more of a general complaint rather than focused on getting help for the finger print reader.  While it seems like this has happened to at least one other person, the community doesn't seem to understand what is going on just yet.

Can you tell us a bit more about the situation?

How long have you had the B570?  Which model is it? (There is a type number on the bottom that should be 7 characters long - this will help us get more information).

Does it ever work?  Is it just buggy, or was it working fine and then just quit?

What have you tried already?

Generically, we'd suggest:

1) Check BIOS to see if there are any settings for FP enable / disable
2) Check device manager - does the fingerprint reader show up - would be under biometric devices (I think)
3) Have you downloaded and re-installed the drivers?

OK - assuming you've done those things we have some choices on next steps.

You could try to back up your data and then use one key recovery to restore system to factory state - this will wipe everything.  If something has become corrupt software wise, this should fix it.  If not, you just wasted some time and will have to reinstall your stuff.

You could call service, they could try some things over the phone, possibly offer to remote into your system and try to fix it, or arrange for you to send in for service.

My laptop is Thinkpad T430s I correctly downloaded and re-installed fingerprint drivers but had no effect. My Thinkvantage software reported that "Cannot find fingerprint device sensor"In Bios, when I accessed option of fingerprint, it reported that "There are no fingerprint readers attached on this computer"However, windows 8 still recognized the fingerprint via the presence of Touchip Fingerprint Coprocessor (WBF advanced mode) when I accessed device manager in windows 8.Now, I cannot start my laptop by using fingerptint function. What can I do? Does it relate to hardware or software.

Answer:Fingerprint reader stopped working after 3-week use

I've seen this one other time and it was caused by faulty hardware - the fingerprint sensor needed to be replaced.  I recommend calling the support phone number in your country and requesting warranty service.

Back in September 2015 I had a similar problem: Microsoft's LifeCam HD-3000 webcam stopped working when I 'upgraded' from Windows 7 to Win 10. However, a thread on Windows Ten Forums solved the problem.

So I've been a happy camper for the last 17 month. That is until the Windows 10 Anniversary Update. At least I am pretty sure that's when the LifeCam stopped working. The cam itself does not seem to be the problem--the little blue light comes on when it is engaged, the LifeCam software boots up fine, but, unfortunately, this is what I see:

The webcam is appropriately connected to a USB 2.0 port and, according to Windows, it is functioning properly:

The webcam also does not work via the Windows 10 Camera app, and on a video chat site (black screen on both).

I have detailed my attempts to fix this problem over on the Microsoft Support site: Need help troubleshooting Microsoft LifeCam HD-3000 Not Working

Can you all think of anything else I can do?

Many thanks,

Mark

Answer:LifeCam HD-3000 stopped working after Windows 10 Anniversary Update

Hi Mark.

I don't think I read it in your solutions, is the privacy setting for camera set properly under Privacy Settings.

Will the camera work in Safe mode (don't think I saw that mentioned, long MS thread.)

A few weeks ago the fingerprint scanner on my girlfriend's U460 stopped working. She was deep into a major project at the time so I wasn't able to really look into it until now. To the best of my knowledge no new software was installed around that time and the only updates would have come through Windows Update. The software does not recognize that the fingerprint scanner is connected. I uninstalled the software, restarted, and installed the latest version (5.9.3.6245) for Windows 7 64-bit from the lenovo download page. The problem seems to be that either Windows isn't detecting the hardware or that it's been given a generic driver and I can't find it. There's nothing in the device manager that appears to be the fingerprint reader. Normally with these symptoms I'd assume the hardware has gone bad, but looking for solutions there seem to be a lot of issues with Lenovo fingerprint readers. I just haven't seen anything about what I'm seeing specifically. Any ideas?

Answer:Ideapad U460 fingerprint reader stopped working

hey louiedog,is there anything in the device manager called "security devices" ?if there is, could you check if there is anything listed in it ?

I upgraded to Win10 last year. The fingerprint reader has been working fine since then. Recently it stopped. Device Manager says the device is working properly. SimplePass doesn'r report an issue. I'm still prompted for my fingerprint when logging into web sites. But the reader doesn't appear to be on. The light doesn't flash and my fingerprint isn't read. Device Manager lists the driver as: 1/7/20124.3.301.0 My SimplePass is: 6.0.100.276

Hi, I disabled the touchpad in the BIOS around September 2008. There was a few updates and my fingerprint reader stopped working. Also, when I look at the BIOS, the option to enable the touchpad back is not there anymore. I have updated my BIOS to the latest one and searched around but couldn't find a fix. I am not even sure if this is a hardware issue or is it just my BIOS? Note that the same problem exists in Linux as well. Also, I have my laptop on the dock most of the time but I tried to restart it undocked and without any mouse. The problem still exists. Hi,I am suspecting a hardware failure, but wanted to check the forums first anyway.I have an X230 Tablet running Windows 8.1 Update. Fingerprint software 6.0. Was working fine (i.e. swipe to power on and log on to Windows and the Lenovo Password Mgr) until this morning. No more green light on the sensor, no function. Windows says that the fingerprint sensor is not available. It was still showing up in Device Manager, I uninstalled it as part of some troubleshooting and it's not being detected anymore now.Any ideas other than hardware? Thanks,SA.

Answer:X230 Tablet fingerprint reader stopped working

It sounds like hardware failure but try one more thing:

Reboot into BIOS setup (by pressing F1 at the ThinkPad logo screen).
Go to the security -> fingerprint menu.
There's an option about clearing the fingerprint sensor storage (or something like that).
What happens?

I know many people have had this issue but I can't find the solution. One of the threads from 2014 has a "solved" reply but all it says is "this appears to have solved my problem." Left wondering what solved the problem... I've had this computer for a week. The fingerprint reader worked fine until yesterday. Not sure if it was a coincidence, but I connected an older DVD write drive to the USB port to try and install an old software. After that, the fingerprint reader will no longer light up or work. The driver seems to be working fine under Device Manager, but when I open the Fingerprint Reader app I get a message saying the reader is not connected. Is this a problem that has remained forever unresolved and unaddressed by Lenovo or is there a solution that someone can point me to? Any help will be much appreciated.

Answer:T450s brand new and fingerprint reader stopped working

It might be something got corrupted on the fingerprint sensor, or it might be the hardware went bad.
To rule out corruption:
1.  reboot and press F1 to enter BIOS setup
2.  change to the Security menu, and then pick the Fingerprint item
3.  choose the option to "Reset Fingerprint Data"
4.  BIOS setup will tell you the result - what does it say?
5.  if step #4 is OK, then reboot into Windows and try to enroll your fingerprint again

Thanks!

Or should I say they suddenly stopped working under windows. I am using windows xp sp2 and have been using this laptop on the same installation of Windows for about 6 months now.. no problems at all.. till now. This morning when i turned on my laptop, the first thing i noticed that the fingerprint reader was not working.. It was not giving me any response at all.. so i logged in with my password.. Then while using the internet the wifi got disconnected from the router and after that it refused to work no matter what I do.. It gets stuck on "acquiring network adress" but when i gave a static ip, like 192.168.1.232 it gets connected but i dont get any data from the router.. it shows offline mode.. also the wifi gets disabled and then enabled by itself multiple times.. I had to turn it off..  -The router is fine.. my acer aspir 5315 and my nokia connects with the router via wi fi without any problems... - Also I tried using the wifi under ubuntu linux and it works there.. meaning the net works wirelessly without any problems in ubuntu but it refuses to connect in windows xp.. I could not try the fingerprint reader in ubuntu since it is not supported by linux yet. I tried removing the drivers and reinstalling the software+drivers.. but that did not help... any ideas as to what may have caused this? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.. I dont want to do a re-install of windows.. Help

Half the time the fingerprint system wouldn't show up being replaced by the typed login. That was on Vista. On WIn 7 it doesn't work at all and Lenovo hasn't edited the driver yet.

Hello, fine people of the internet.

First thing, I apologize if this subject have been solved before.
I browsed through older threads for a while, and looked up on Google, but so far I didn't find a solution to my problem, or maybe I missed it.

I'm here because I'm encountering troubles since a couple days, when I installed the Windows 10 anniversary update.

Let me start from the beginning.

A month ago, I bought myself a new, quite powerful MSI laptop.
The main purpose of this laptop is musical production, using Cubase 8 and a couple of other programs.
For a few weeks, everything worked perfectly fine.
This new laptop allowed me to expand dramatically the possibilities of Cubase compared to my old system.
I could run big projects with 60+ tracks, heavy plug-ins and fancy virtual instruments super smoothly.

But a few days ago, the Windows 10 anniversary update installed itself, and since then, I'm having trouble with my programs.
For instance, Cubase shows heavy signs of CPU and RAM usage (called VST performances, in the program itself.
In the task manager, the CPU peaks at 20-25%) on another project I started a week ago or so, comprising 20 tracks, which used to run extremely smoothly (the said VST performances weren't reaching 2% before the update), but now performs super bad (VST performances now show a 20-25% resources usage when the project is loaded but idle, and the counter will suddenly ramp up to 100%, either if the project is idle or playing back, causing mass... Answer:CPU usage and Windows 10 anniversary update (AE 1607)

Sometimes some programs need updates as well. However, you mention several programs. You can check to see if other users of these specialised programs are experiencing similar difficulties.

There are some significant updates to the anniversary edition (which first came out in early August). It's possible those may help. However there have been hiccups downloading and installing those- two big ones have been withdrawn and replaced by MS!

You have 10 days from installing the AU to roll back- you may wish to consider doing that, and let things settle for a while and try again.

Meanwhile please post a screenshot of your task manager demonstrating high CPU use. Make sure you click the CPU tab so the column is organised with processes using most CPU time at the top.

Good evening, my fingerprint reader/simplepass stopped working after my computer received an update this past tuesday. Let me give you a timeline of event. I tried to reinstall simplepass- it would not let me do it because I was told to remove aunthentec driver. I wasn't able to remove authentec driver in the begining, so I used the instructions in another post and did it via the registry. I tried to reinstall simplepass, it would not allow me to do it, saying I already had a software that perform the same function. tried system restore, failed about 6 times. deleted all programs and restarted to download simplepass and it worked, however, It is not the one that uses fingerprint data. I tried to reinstall my old simplepass, and it work This is the error I get after I finally was able to reinstall simplepass "The truesuite engine failed to initialize properly. Restarting the application, restarting the computer, or reinstalling the application may fix this problem. The application must now exit" so, how can I find the truesuite engine? thanks

To stop onedrive.exe crashing (or any other applications you have set in the application protections list that are crashing) you need to toggle the security setting in EMET, which for some odd reason fixes it.  For example:
1) Turn 'Certificate Pinning' to the opposite of what you currently have it set to, or change the 'Block Untrusted Fonts' to one of the other settings other than what you have it currently set to.  That makes the Quick Profile Name change to 'Custom

After updating to Anniversary, the sensors responsible for the automatic switch between tablet mode and laptop mode stopped working.
On Device Manager, I have to enable "View Hidden Devices" in order to see the sensors. They appear greyed out and when selected an error message 45 appears: " This device is not connected to the computer".
There used to be 2 "Cole??o de Sensores HID V2", I uninstalled one to see if they would reappear and reinstall but they simply disappeared.
How do I enable them?

Hi,
I am wondering if anyone else is experiencing this problem after the Windows 10 Anniversary Update.
When restarting, my laptop takes 5 minutes (no, that's not a misprint) to bootup. More specifically, that's the time taken from pressing the On button to the time I get to the login screen. I have an SSD drive in the laptop. While I am waiting for this to happen, the drive light is permanently on with no flickering. That's a LOT of drive access / throughput.
From there (logging on), there are no issues. Laptop is fine.
Here's a very weird thing. If I run cmd as Administrator and then run chkdsk /f and then reboot, the laptop (after it does the disk check and reboots again) will start really fast. Like it should. If I then reboot after that, it's back to the five minute thing.
I have tried the following:

Turned EnableULPS off
Tried turning off Virtual Memory or adjusting it to the recommended settings
Turning off Fast Boot
Taken the battery out while machine is off
Updated the drivers from the Device Manager
Unfortunately boot logging c:\Windows\ntbtlog.txt does not show log times and so I cannot see where the delay is.
Nothing in the Event Viewer since the delay happens before that.

Any ideas? The E6540 is supposedly certified for Update 1607.
Many thanks.
Kind Regards
Nick

I recently downloaded from Toshiba and installed Fingerprint Utility V1.0.3.49 (tc00407400c.exe) and since then my fingerprint scanner has stopped working.

Have uninstalled and reinstalled several times and same result.

Device manager says device working ok.

Answer:Fingerprint scanner has stopped working after vV1.0.3.49 update

May I ask you what notebook model you have and what system you are using?

Probably you would need to delete the registered fingerprints and after the new reboot you should try to register the new fingerprints using the updated fingerprint software.

Did you try that?

I did not know the "Anniversary Update" would install, like, Windows 11. (may well have been)
I first had issues with the update error 'Can't yada, yada due to USB device.
I found a reg fix for that. Loaded the update and it took like forever.
OK, finally finished and last reboot. Up pops Windows 10 version 1607 which just almost destroyed many
of my settings and enhancements I had made to my preferences. Well this sucks.
I played with it for a while and then, totally disgusted, restored an image prior this update.
I installed show/hide updates. I also reinitialized the reg change I made making sure MS won't just sneak it in.
Good luck with that. I'm just venting. I'll be normal again tomorrow.

Answer:Windows 10 update to version 1607

Yep the way W10 updates is pretty frustrating, the best you can do is Defer feature updates, and it will take longer to update.

But the Anniversary is pretty good compared to the Creators update, IMO.

I would not go making a bunch of changes and customizations to W10, because you know it`s gonna update to a new version sooner or later.

I had that also with this update.
So here is what I did to get over it.
I restarted it then ran the Disc Clean Up app
Which cleared all traces from the Disc
Then let it download and install, which took some time
Then it installed to 30% then Restarted then finished at 100%
Which again sat there for some time then flashed up it had finished and now running all ok on all my systems
Hope that may hopefully help you with your problem

I'm seeing the same thing here - 2 latops with Pro and Defer Upgrades set have both started to download 1607 (or at least tried - I need to free up some disk space before it will succeed).

Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1607 for x64-based Systems (KB3194496)

Three days ago my desktop tried to update 1607 3 times. Each time on reboot it says failed to update and reverts. Each day it tries again at shutdown.

Yesterday my second(son's) computer updated and all I could see was a black screen with a circle. Had to do a repair and it reverted back 2 two updates. Note, this computer does not have integrated graphics - so that fix process would not work.

Now the wife's computer wants to update but I am not restarting it - if hers goes down it will be hell in my household.

I looked on the web and don't see much about this update getting fixed by Microsoft. Any ideas what I should do? My main computer is asking to try again and it will just fail or worse - black screen. I told the family not to shutdown the wife's but I know at some point it will try to do the update on its own.

This is the worst mess we have ever had, but all I see are web pages about the anniversary update - not this one.

Answer:Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1607 problems

Download microsofts wushowhide utility.Run it when connected to the internet and block the update thats
the source of the problem.

Should also create a drive image/system repair disk of a working win 10 install,so you can quickly recover if updates hose your system.

Hey, ???

I'm just getting a Windows update now (ca. 10:13 AM Brisbane Australia) - my laptop screen suddenly went black and when things reappeared, previously-open windows were misaligned and differently sized.

The Windows Settings box which had been showing downloads (I had hit "search for updates") was blank. I rebooted it and it shows "Feature update to Windows 10, version 1607" downloading. I'd researched 1607 and had understood it amounted only to a download in megabytes if you already had 1511 (which I do).

I'm on metred connection - is this going to happen all the time??

Don't know you're whole situation, but that wording and the size of ~3GB sounds an awful lot like the Anniversary Update download.

Normally, you check the Microsoft Update Catalog to grab stuff. But this is a cumulative update that's been superseded by a later update. Looks like MS is removing older cumulative updates when they post newer ones.

This is a brand new machine -- had it maybe 2 weeks.  Bought this configuration for games such as Rome Total War, Skyrim, etc. After the Microsoft -- Update for Windows 10 Version 1607 for x64-based Systems (KB3199986) on 11/08, the R7M440Graphics with 4 GB has stopped being recognized. The system now only uses the integrated R5 graphics which has limited memory.  Some games warned me and allow me to use main memory, others just lock up. The Radeon software shows it "Linked" to the R5 but it is not being used.Is there anyway to make the R7M440 the primary graphics?

After applying this update I found a number of problems.
The most disturbing was that all restore points had been deleted and that system protection had been turned off.
I also found that Microsoft Games for Windows 8 v1.2 no longer worked, not even after a reinstall.
I was extremely pissed off, but luckily I had taken a backup so I immediately restored my system.
Unfortunately I didn't check what else might have been affected.

Anyone else experienced problems?

Answer:Problems after Feature update to Windows 10, version 1607

The Features update to Windows 10, version 1607 is not like the cumulative updates. It doesn't patch the system, it is a full install of the revised OS. As such, you previous system has been archive in the windows.old folder should you wish to go back to the earlier build (this option is available for 10 days). This is exactly the same process as upgrading from Win7/8 to 10.

Your previous restore points were for the previous version of windows so do not apply to this new OS. In fact, they would probably break your system if there was any way to restore them!. They have been archived along with the old system and would be returned along with it if you had rolled back to the previous build. Some have reported that system protection was turned off after the upgrade to 1607, but this is easily turned back on again.

The Microsoft Games for Windows 8 were removed because (as with an upgrade from 8 to 10) they are deprecated features of Windows 8. Setup deletes all such deprecated features that it finds as part of the install of the new OS. You can't reinstall them because the hacks used by the 3rd-party sources to repackage these games and fool Windows 10 into installing them don't work in 1607. Apparently updated 'hacks' have been made, you'll need to download a new version. Be careful where you download them from, you may get more than you bargained for (malware may be an unwanted 'extra').

This update downloads and apparently installed yesterday but this morning started to download again. Then claimed there was not enough memory and I needed to insert memory stick or sd card. I have tried both but neither are recognised once the installation has gone ahead and the laptop restarts. Any help would be very welcome.
Thanks.

My computer keeps telling me I have an update which requires a restart. It is listed as ? Feature update to Windows 10, version 1607. (Is this what they are calling the "anniversary update"?) I don't know which build/version I currently have. The problem is, I have tried to let it update quite a few times, but it fails due to one or more components not able to be configured. This has been going on for many months now. Currently I have the "delay updates" checked so I do not have to let it try again. I keep hoping Microsoft would eventually have a fix for this, but so far I don't see one.

Any idea what I can to get the feature update to install?

Answer:• Feature update to Windows 10, version 1607. Problems

to find out the version that you currently have:

-right click on the start button
-go to "Run"
-type "winver" (no quotemarks) and hit [enter]
If I could provide any advice before installing a feature update;
it would be to update your drivers (special attention on Graphics and Chipset drivers)

I downloaded and installed the fingerprint reader software for my T61 (7659-D22) with Windows 7. At the login screen I see the "Scan your finger" option, but none of my fingerprints is recognized, so I log on with my password. In Windows I get the Fingerprint popup inviting me to enroll fingerprints. Three are shown as enrolled already (carry over form WinXP, no doubt), all of which I had tried unsuccessfully at the login screen. I tried enrolling additional fingerprints, but the scans do not register at all. How do I solve this problem?

Hello All,I recently upgraded to Windows 8, and I can't seem to be able to get the fingerprint reader to work. When I try to enroll a finger with the ThinkVantage Fingerprint Software, it says that:Error Code:         Error MessageE7210005           Cannot enroll user.E7210005           Cannot update passportE7210005           Cannot find fingerprint sensor When I open the Windows Biometric control panel, it says that the fingerprint reader is "Unavailable". I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the device in device manager, and I have also tried downloading the latest drivers from http://support.authentec.com/Downloads/Windows/Drivers.aspx#LiveTabsContent38993Neither one of which resolved the issue. When I first installed Windows 8, the fingerprint reader worked as it should, however, I have had my computer repaired since then (for an unrelated issue), and it quit functioning right after the first repair. They have replaced the motherboard and keyboard in my computer. Does anyone have any suggestions?

This one has to be the worst of them all. It has taken us back to '90s era when we had to do such stupid things such as take out USBs while installation, install drivers and do backups and all that stuff.

Few days back i decided to install the Annversary Update ie. 1607 update as people said it had many new and improved features. But unfortunately it turned out to be my worst ever Windows experience EVER. Even worse than the Windows 98!

Following unsolved issues which i have been facing so far:-

1) Initially it refused to update and i had to download the HUGE update again and again and again. Subsequently i realised that like old old days i had to remove the wireless receiver of my mouse/keyboard to complete the installation.

2) Even though the installation is complete, 6 out of 10 times windows gets stuck on the black screen and process ONLY if i remove the wireless usb receiver.

3) Cold boot and resuming from hibernation now takes AGES! Prior to the 'much awaited' update a cold boot took around 50 seconds and resuming from hibernation tool hardly 15-20 seconds. Now cold boot takes around 2-3 minutes and resuming from hibernation takes around 1.5-2 minutes. It always gets stuck on the login screen and processes the entered password as if it is negotiating from servers situated on Pluto!

4) My reliable tp link wireless adpater automatically gets unplugged every 2-3 hours or so. I have to unplug replug to make it work everytime.

I did a clean install of 1607 on a separate partition and encountered wifi and graphic issues. Unsuccessful searched for appropriate drivers which may be found with further searching.

However, my 3 year old Toshiba is running great on build 1511. Updates to 1511 were received this past Tuesday. And personally, for my needs, 1607 does not bring that much to the table. I did try the new Edge extensions but found the speed performance lacking.

Will older builds continue to receive updates ?

my laptop has been trying for many times for the anniversary update of win 10,
but i always stuck at the 30%, and the laptop just crush there and remain 30% for all time.
I have tried to reset the computer but still fail.

What can I do???

Answer:cant finish the anniversary update for the win 10 (1607)

How are you doing the update?

If you are doing it through Windows Update, I suggest using the Media Creation Tool do download the .ISO. Mount the .ISO (Win 10 can do that), and run the update from that.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...load/windows10

It may not work better, but at least you'll only download the .ISO once. You'll still have it if there is something that you need to fix before the update will complete.

You may ultimately have to do a clean install. It's a fair bit of work, and requires you to re-install all of your programs.

Clean Install Windows 10

If you have to do that, I recommend waiting a few weeks until Win 10 1703 (Creator's edition) is released.

Hello, I am the owner of a small laptop, an Acer Switch 10, which only have 32GB of SSD memory inside. I also have a microSD *always* in of 128GB, and a normal 500GB HDD on the keyboard, if plugged, of course.

The internal memory has 6GB free right now, and I can't free anymore as windows folder has over 12GB and total usable space is about 19-21GB.

When I try to launch 1607 update with the upgrade tools, it tells me that I need 16GB free, and doesn't give me the option to choose any other device to store the installation.

If I use media download tool it tells me that it needs 8GB and also doesn't give me the option to select another storage.

Is there a way to install this update? Is it impossible? Am I missing something?

Thanks in advance!

Answer:Not enough space for anniversary update (1607)

Hello, whilst you can manually download an iso and create a bootable medium from it (mounting it would not be a viable option for you given your constraints) bear in mind a copy of much of your Windows folder will be created as Windows.old on your disk.. for possible rollback recovery. That will be there unless you delete it manually for 10 days from the upgrade.

Now people with 100s of Gb spare on C are also getting this message. One possibility is that (I believe) some 450Mb of unallocated space is needed on the disk. I had a quick read around on this and causes seem obscure 'MS is working on it'

However you are tightly constrained.. and one thing you don't want happening is partitions which are part of the Windows environment being created on a different physical disk.

The iso is about 3.08Gb if I recall.

So
a. Manually download an iso and create a bootable medium
b. Research space issues
c. Create a disk image of your working PC for security (Macrium Reflect (free) + its boot medium + external storage
d. Attempt the upgrade.

Note that for 64 bits, MS states 2GbRam + 20Gb hard disk min. Well, my C: is just over 40Gb, no Windows.old, and I have programs installed on D: not C: and data mostly NOT on C: so 20Gb seems very optimistic.

Answer:Anniversary Update 1607 Mandatory/Necessary ?

Hi, don't expect 1511 to be supported in parallel indefinitely. There has to be some overlap, as some editions allow upgrades to be deferred. But the point is deferral can't be indefinite. That's not MS's policy.

Good you know your PC isn't supported, but doesn't mean it may not run it as you know. One possible problem with doing such upgrades is that thermal management may not be effective due to low level AHCI driver incompatibilities.

The upgrade does resolve a few longstanding bugs, introduces one text positioning bug (I have a workaround).
The Edge extensions are limited to those from Store. I use Firefox, and don't use the apps or Edge in general - and in particular not the Win 10 start menu(!!).

Your laptop has a limited life, so if it runs on 1511, and does what you want- great.
