I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a Dell XPS 400 running XP (Home Media Edition) and all of a sudden this error message showed up on "the blue screen of death"

"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen,
restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow
these steps:
Disable or uninstall any anti-virus, disk defragmentation
or backup utilities. Check your hard drive configuration,
and check for any updated drivers. Run CHKDSK/F to check
for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

Technical information:
*** STOP: 0x00000024 (0x00190203,0x871A5D10,0C0000102,0x00000000)"

I tried booting in safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with command prompt, last known good configuration (tried this first) and even start windows normally, but it always end back at the blue screen with the error!

I have a windows xp disk for XP professional service pack 3 that someone gave me, but it won't even boot to that disk.

More than anything I want the pictures on this hard drive , anything else isn't of much value, but would be nice to have if can be saved.

What do I do next? I don't have any other pc to try this drive in, I'm using an iPad to post in this forum!

Any help is greatly appreciated!

I have a windows xp disk for XP professional service pack 3 that someone gave me

do you have a CoA label on the PC with the windows type and KEY on ?
is it also XP Pro ro XP home ?

did you change the boot order in the bios to boot from CD first

if you can borrow another PC with a DVD/CD writer - you can create a UBUNTU bootable DVD and run from the CD drive on the faulty drive and hopefully copy all your data off

UBUNTU Stand Alone CD

Note the latest version of UBUNTU needs a DVD to use and boot from

if you only have CDs then you can use an older version, version 10 or 11 from this archive list
Old Ubuntu Releases
It may be possible to boot from another Operating System
This will at least test the Hardware and also see if you can see the Harddrive and possibly get data off.

If you have another PC with a cdwriter and spare CD
goto The leading OS for PC, tablet, phone and cloud | Ubuntu and download the ISO Download Ubuntu Desktop | Download | Ubuntu

You can also run from a USB device now - if the Machine supports booting off a USB Stick
Download Ubuntu Desktop | Download | Ubuntu

full details are here (Note this is for version 9 - so the start up options are slightly different )

First i will describe the problem. My computer suddenly told me that it was infected with spyware, now i recognized it as a fake indicator because it kept trying to force me to download a certain "anti virus software" so i put 2 and 2 together and figure i had a virus. so I immediately used Avast! (my anti virus program) to run a full thorough scan of my system. It came up with multiple threats (it told me my startup/memory was infected and it was unsafe to continue using my computer) it recommended restarting and running scan on boot to delete threats. So i restart and i get a blue screen. Then the computer tries to restart and it just loops back into the blue screen every time. This is what i think the problem is. Something (virus/spyware/malware) is trying to boot up on startup. My computer is crashing because of this. The only way to delete is  to run a boot scan. but i cannot reboot in normal mode, only in safe mode. Avast requires a reboot to delete the files. (and yes ive tried manually delete the infested file it just reapears) (below is everything ive tried)Now heres what ive tried to do: - I started in smart mode. Ran avast there. it does the same, finds a threat asks me to reboot which brings me back to the blue screen. - I ran msconfig, disabled all startup things in the startup tab and then tried a success, (still got the blue screen)- so then in safemode i installed malwarebytes (recommended by a friend) and ran that, it found 20 thre... Win 7 Normal Mode won't start, will go past Starting up Screen and just hit a Black screen and will hit a Crash Dump (blue error screen)..... Its a new installation and worked fine last night and early this morning after separate boots. But as soon as I booted this afternoon it wouldn't load and would hit the blue error crash dump screen....

So any suggestions?

Last night I updated windows 8.1 from windows 8.
It got to the stage where it needs to restart so it done that started the configarations and once it reached 100% it restarted.

Since then what happens is when i press power on the samsung logo comes on the screen then the black screen with the windows picture then the bsod comes up for around half a second and it restarts. then it constantly does this.

The whole cycle only takes a few seconds.

Ive tried booting in safe mode but this isnt working so I downloaded kav rescue on another computer and saved it on a flash drive, But it wont boot off this either.

Any ideas?

Answer:Windows wont start after 8.1 update wont boot in safe mode

What does the BSOD state? Most times it is a driver issue with the Display drivers. Other times it is hardware.

Today I noticed that I could not open my start menu with neither the windows button, ctrl + esc, or a click of the mouse. I've also had a problem the last couple of days saving/opening files in one of the programs I used to make music. I tried to go into safe mode to do system restore, but the safe mode didn't boot. It scrolled all the system files on the screen but then just stopped and nothing happened.

So, I tried the other option (forget what it's called) that lets you perform various other system restoration tasks. I brought up the system restore screen from there, but got an error that said something about corrupt files so it could not perform the restore. I checked again, and all my restore points had been deleted.

Lastly, when I click computer, all the drives are blank with no names beside them, only the icons. I can still click them and they seem to be functioning normally, so I don't know if there is a relation to this. I don't know if some registry files were deleted or if there is some other problem. I didn't notice the start menu/safe mode/blank icon issues until I just recently installed the latest windows update.

Sorry if this seemed a little long winded, but I would appreciate help from anyone.

Ok, it all started when i was dloading a program to make windows setups.(.msi). Then i decided i didnt like it and uninstalled it. After tht was done. I decided i was going to stick with Inno Setup. I have used it before and liked it. But then i noticed all or most of my desktop icons were missing. And all the start menu ientries were missing. So i figured i had a virus. SO i went to do a system resotre. But found that i oculdnt find it...due to to missing folders. So i decided i would then try to boot into safe mode. When i tried to boot it said it cannot find a file(same with normal mode). Ubfortunely i dont remember what it said. I think it said windows cannot find NRDL press ctrl alt delete to reboot. or somthing like that. Any ways i tried a few more times and it all failied. SO then i tried the windows recovery console. Nothing. I really didnt know whre to go with it. Then i decied to go into the bios and reset. Or i thought i was resseting them. I seleteced. "fails proof settings". But then i rebooted and things got worse. My monitor is now getting no signal, it says it is ocnnected though..... So i cant see what i am doing. Please any ideas. I have a Programming project that i have been working on for months now. i dont wanna lose that. And a Lang arts project. I am very computer savvy but i have tried everything. and yes i tried a differ monitor. No Dice.

my pc wont start in normal mode i have to use safe mode networking how can i get it to start normally again

Answer:pc wont start normal mode have to use safe mode networking

That usually happens just after you've installed a driver that your system will not tolerate. Bear in mind that drivers are also installed with third-party firewalls, antivirus software & CD-burning software, so they can also cause the problem.Windows Safe Mode doesn't load any third-party drivers (except network driver if called for) which is why it is able to start in that mode, and that's how we know that a third-party driver or some software of the type described above is causing the problem. If you can remember recently installing a driver or some software of the type described above, uninstall it in Safe Mode then try starting Windows normally.

MALWARE issues!!!I was having trouble staying in SAFEMODE to try to do some cleanup on my Laptop. The malware prevented my getting into safe mode and would cause the pc to just reboot normally. Because of this, I went into the msconfig>system config utility > boot.ini> then placed a check in the safemode box. I rebooted. Now its worse because it is now stuck with the BLACK screen safe mode choices. But It still wont go into safe mode and wont even reboot normally to reg windows mode.It trys to reboot on its own after a countdown of 30 seconds. But a blue screen quickly flashes once. Then it tries to reboot over and over again no matter which option I pick (last known config, safe mode networking, safe mode, safe with command, etc), it just tries to reboot over and over again like a broken record.I can get into phoenix BIOS by pushing F10 (or F12 I think), but I dont know what I can do there. At this point, i just want my pc to be able to boot normally into Window, and I will see what I can do in reg windows mode as far as cleaning the malware off my pc.Please help in easy terms. Thanks for your help in advance...PS: Windows Home edition OEM sp2 IE7-HP pavillion 8100 laptop-I have the original sealed discs that came with my 4 or so year old Laptop.I just need to be walked step by step if I need to boot from them. Ok, so I'm helping someone can help me on here. I was origionally running Windows 7 but had to install Ubuntu alongside it. I was installing a game, then started playing it while it continued downloading (it was a streaming download.) It ran fine for about 10 min, and then the computer froze. I decided to restart it and now it wont boot back up. Everytime I try booting it into either safe mode or regular mode it gets to the windows loading screen and then goes to the bsod and restarts. When I try booting it in safe mode it will load all the drivers until it reaches aswrvrt, then bsod flashes and it restarts. I tried booting it into recovery mode but it will reach a gray screen and then hang. I can move the courser around but nothing loads. I installed Ubuntu on a sd card so I can try and fix the problem. I can access all the data on the hard drive, so I tried uninstalling avast and the game. I dont think it worked since I can still see the files.Does anyone know what I am talking about and can help me?

Answer:Windows 7 wont boot into safe mode or recovery mode

Your Windows installation has corrupted in some way. If you cannot enter the "Last Known Good" option from the recovery screen you should then be looking at booting from a repair disk and repairing your file system.
EDIT: that is a windows repair disk specific to your OS that I am talking about.

HP pavillion dv6000windows vistaok. so a few weeks ago my computer wouldnt  start in normal mode, only in safe mode. it is still under warranty so i called and sent in my laptop to get fixed. I get it back and they say they had to replace a "board".  it worked for about 4 days and then started doing the same problem.  It starts and gets to a loading screen with a timer bar and then the screen goes black and then the screen turns off. so i call the warranty place again and they tell me to do a system restore.  this worked for about 2-3 weeks and now its doing the same thing as before.  i tried doing a system restore again and it still doesnt work.  so now im clueless, cityassure sucks and will do anything to keep from replacing my laptop. so now im looking for help elsewhere.  if any one could give me some advice or help that would be great.

I'm in a real mess since Lavasoft AdAware crashed my windows 7 home premium edit. 64bit after its 1st initial mandatory reboot. Everything is frozen, nothing can be clicked on or done in any way, shape or form. Even 'Esc' and 'Ctrl-Alt-Del wont work. PC must be shutdown manually. It also wont uninstall in safe mode. Once in safe mode the 1st time I got windows telling me that it cant uninstall this software in safe mode (this was done by its own uninstaller, and by the windows one, and by the Revo Pro uninstaller.) the 2nd time (reboot) it told me it wasnt installed properly. the 3d time it can't install in safe mode again. What now please? Anyone have an idea?

Thank you

Answer:Lavasoft AdAware crashed win7-Ctrl-alt-del wont work & it wont uninstall in safe mode

Sorry solved it. I'll write the answer should anyone need it someday. I believe my solution can help for other similar cases besides Ad-Aware.
A minute after I posted this a thought came to mind: Go into safe Mode and use msconfig.exe. So I ran it and unchecked everything to do with Ad-Aware. TO be even more sure I checked off not to run also other things that I knew would not be needed like anything to do with Apple, or Adobe. Afterwhich, doing a proper reboot Windows did actually start normally--no crash and I was able to uninstall it. Slowly I put back other services and start-up items and all is working fine now--so far at least ;-) Thanks for those who took a look and I hope it will help some people in the future.

Hello All

Thank you anyway. The problem was caused by a new Cannon pi6600D printer that is slow to initialize. I prevented windows from starting at all. Shut printer off normal boot goes fine. Then turned printer on and P&P finds it and all is ready to go.

Now I need to figure out why the Cannon is so slow.

I have been attempting to fix this for the last 2 days and not getting anywhere fast. I hope someone has some suggestions.

Xp will not boot past windows logo screen. If I just let it run it will reboot and try agian on its own.

All the Safe mode choices freeze while the text goes down the screen - doesnt even make to the logo screen.

Last known good configuration does the same thing as regular boot up -no load past windows logo.

I have attemted to reboot using the xp disk. (I am running Raid 0 and did install raid drivers with the F6 command) I am able to get the screen with options and have choosen all the option which would freeze. They both freeze when they begin to anylze the first hard drive.

My bios sees good good hard drives (I dont know if that really means anything)

Raid shows healthy drives as well.

If I reset my computer with the restart button after attempting to load the comptuer will freeze at the bios start up screen. If I power down the comptuer and the restart I have the same boot issues. Not sure if that gives any clue.

I have another computer with the exact same specs. I have swithced hard drives and get the same result. The hard drives from my other computer work fine in the busted computer so we can rule out motherboard, graphics, loose connection, etc....

I would usually run chkdsk or reload drivers using the windows disk but as you know from the info above i cannot get to that point. I have also tried to boot to Dos with a boot disk so I can ru... Read more

Hello there,
It seems like you did not perform a clean installation of Windows and that's why your system is acting up.
Follow the steps below to install a new copy of Windows:
1. To format your hard disk during Windows 7 installation you will need to start or boot your computer using the Windows 7 installation disc or USB flash drive. Insert your Windows 7 disc in your CD/DVD drive. Please note: will need to restart or turn on your system with the disc in the drive.
2. After turning on your system with the CD in the drive go ahead and press any key when prompted during your computer post routine and then follow the instructions presented on screen. If you don’t see this go back to step 1 to setup your BIOS to boot from CD or USB flash drive depending on your installation media.
3. On the Install Windows page simply enter your preferences and click next.
4. Accept the Windows license agreement.
5. On the “Which type of installation do you want” page go ahead and choose the “Custom” option.
6. Select Drive options (advanced) on the “Where do you want to install Windows” page.
7.  Select the partition that you want to change, choose the formatting option you want to perform and then follow the instructions.
When allocating space choosing the default MB size for your drive is typically the best for most users since you want to take full advantage of all your disk... Read more

I'm using Windows 10 on my laptop. Few days ago, I found a process in task manager (I forgot the name) which seemed suspicious. So I searched the internet for it and found out that it is a cryptocurrency mining app so I looked for up how to remove it. I downloaded Malwarebytes first it cleared some stuff. Then I downloaded HitmanPro after which all the problem started, I guess. It scanned my pc for a while without showing any result. After a minute it showed some files that were scanned and all of them were Firefox Browser's cache. But at the exact same time Windows Defender started showing virus detected notification. I panicked and stopped the HitmanPro scan and restarted my pc to remove stuff from Malwarebytes scan and this scan. After this restart, everytime I start my laptop, it shows the error "Your PC will automatically restart in one minute". Tried a lot pf fixes from the internet but to no avail. The final option I think I have is to reset my pc. But here's the problem. My laptop is only starting in safe mode due to "Your PC will automatically restart in one minute" error. I can't select the option of 'Keep my files and reset pc' from settings cause it isn't working in safe mode. I started the System recovery by F11 option while starting the pc and there's a reset option too. Please tell me will I get to keep my files if I reset my pc from there?
Also the salesperson already created a Recovery drive on the hard disk itself. I also have the Recovery CD with me.

Ok. This is the furthest I've seen a computer go, and I don't have much hope left.

My brother has a laptop (~4 yrs old). The battery went bad a couple of years ago, and so it now need to be plugged in all of the time. The laptop was asleep when he unplugged it to move it, and when he opened the lid again, it had shut down (very likely because it died). Upon starting it, he got the BSOD and 0xc000021a error code.
The startup repair couldn't fix his problem. Two restore points he had on the system from installing DirectX a few days earlier didn't work. I tried entering safe mode, no luck. Now thinking I was at a last resort, I tried to refresh Windows, keeping his files but removing all the installed programs. I got a message at around 60% telling me Windows encountered a problem and couldn't complete the procedure. Same deal with the full reset. At this point, a reboot greeted me with "No operating system could be found".
I got a large USB and made it into a recovery drive, checking the box that said to include OS files or something (can't remember the exact wording). I tried again using startup repair, then reinstalling windows.

Shockingly, no luck. It failed once again.

A big thankyou in advance!

You need to reboot, keep tapping F8 until you get the extended safe mode menu, and select the option to 'disable automatic restart on system failure' - this should let you see at what point the boot-up is failing. Note down the message you see and post back."I've always been mad, I know I've been mad, like the most of us..."

This morning, after resetting my PC, I encountered the blue ': (' error screen. After trying to restore to a previous instance of the PC (there were two dates to choose from), the restore failed and the two dates are no longer available.

I am unable to reset, restore, start in safe mode, etc.

What should I do?

Okay.... Y'all get in a line, and I'll bend over so you can all give me a good hard kick in the butt. Why gimme a kick?? Ummm... well.. you read the title of this, right? Yep, I did it. It started fairly innocently - I have had a problem for a six months or so where I can't use Safe Mode, because it just re-boots me before I can get past the user login screen. I came across some info a couple days ago about a file I have in my system, sptd.sys, that has been associated with causing this problem. Sptd.sys is a virtual disk driver that DaemonTools virtual CD player program uses.I had uninstalled DaemonTools Lite and installed DT Pro/Standard right before I read this info about sptd.sys, so I promptly uninstalled the upgraded DT, disabled the sptd service, and deleted the file from system32\drivers folder. Unfortunately that didn't clear up my problem with Safe Mode rebooting Windows. I googled around some, and found references to two SafeBootKeyRepair programs - one by SubS, and one by Steelwerks. I came across the one by Steelwerks first and ran it, but it didn't fix the problem, so I kept looking and found another program for the same purpose by SubS, and ran that, but the problem persisted. In the course of looking for SafeBootKeyRepair I came across info about SubS' ComboFix program, and the fact that it would install the Recovery Console in XP Home. I had wanted to get the Recovery Console installed for a LONG time without being able... Read more

My idiot self put a password on my computer to protect it temporarially, then by gods sense of humor the computer shut down through loss of pwer. But the password didn't save correctly and now I can't get on my account. It's the only user, and whenever I try using safe mode with command prompt, it goes to the user log in screen, which defeats the purpose.

In short, I need to reset my passdword, while not being able to log on in any way through the username. I would rather not have to wipe my harddrive, I have no recovery disc, nor partition for some reason. If I have to I will wipe my harddrive then download win7 again, but I need to know how to do that first. Any help?

Hi there , i know that there are a few threads posted about this problem but OP's never post enough info on the problem , after fiddling with the startup options and the general recovery process im going to post here before trying a clean install , i need to get to the bottom of this!

A Quick overview :

I made a clean install for windows 8 through my USB (used the windows 7 tool for that) , installed windows 8 without a single problem , used it for 3 days straight without any problems (some minor freezes here and there) , games were working fine and 3D applications (Maya , Unity3D..etc) worked fine. I updated my Windows to the latest update (some drivers were included through the update) , the night before this nightmare started i turned it off and went to sleep , next morning i woke up turned it on but i had to leave so i turned it off on the lock screen (before logging in). turned it on later that night and this problem happend.

Problem :

"Automatic Repair" saying "Automatic Repair Couldn't Repair Your PC".
The file is "F:\WINDOWS\System32\Logfiles\Srt\SrtTrail.txt".

I went to advanced options and tried the following:

1- Restore from system point :

gave me an error that the system Protection service needs to be activated.

2- CMD :

tried SFC / scannow and it gave me the same error above "system Protection service could not be started" .
tried chkdsk and it said that no problems were found.

3- tried through advanced star... Read more

Answer:Win8 Stuck Repair Bootloop - No Safe Mode / Refresh/ Reset

same thing happened to me... I bought a new hard drive, installed from the USB, and when I tried to activate WIN 8 the upgrade key wouldn't work. now I've spent a very very long time waiting for tech support (after they auto-called me back indicating that I was at the head of the line) and finally give up. looks like I'll have to waste all the work I've done setting up WIN 8, reinstall Win 7 and then upgrade again. That will probably take less time than actually getting reasonable help from Microsoft. Why don't I switch to Apple?

A family member has come to me requesting help with a computer problem. Unfortunately, as she lives a few states away, I can't just pop in there to help. As of a few days ago, whenever she tries booting up her Windows Vista PC (an off-the-shelf HP desktop), she is greeted with the following screen:If the image doesn't show, it's a screen that shows an icon of a padlock, the words/logo "Windows Password-Reset", and a box that says:"Choose the userChoose the user whosepassword you want to reset:AdministratorGuestMy Relative's UsernameOkReboot"I was told that her account/username doesn't have a password, and that if she clicks on "Ok" she's prompted for some sort of authorization key. Choosing to reboot takes her back to that screen and she's not able to get to the OS.I tried directing her to get into safe mode via the F8 key, but she claims she can't; this screen pops up immediately as soon as she resets the computer or turns it on.Any ideas of what to do and where to start with this one? Thanks in advance.

So about an hour ago my computer decided to crap out on my, when on reset my ASUS informed me that there was a power surge and was prevented. But now all I can do is access my OS via Safe Mode even if I choose to "Start Windows Normally". If I do it simply forces it into Safe Mode again. I'm at a complete loss if this is a software problem (I'm hoping so). Or if my motherboard or something else internally has been compromised or damaged when said surge happened.

Any thoughts on this or possible solutions?

Answer:Power Surge detected upon reset, windows 7 only starts up in Safe Mode

Try unplugging the PC from the mains power for a minute or two. Also try loading defaults in BIOS.

XP Pro Wont Boot (Safe Mode with N/W will).

(1) Power interruption last night.
XP Pro wont get past the black loading screen with blue moving bar.

(2) Booted in "Safe Mode with Networking".
Can surf internet OK.
Can run a few sample programs OK.
Ran error checking on C drive - checks out OK.

(3) Restored to a few days ago (still in safe mode).
Rebooted with same problem.

(4) I just happen to have a dual boot with XP Home (a left over, not used anymore).
XP Home boots OK.

(5) I get the impression (with lots of stuff working in safe mode and disc checking out ok) that there's something "simple" happening under the covers that XP PRO gets stuck on.
Are there any other diagnostic tools to help?

(6) If not, is my next step to reinstall XP PRO (followed by SP2) ?
Will I have to reinstall all my applicatons (oh no) ?

Thanks in advance - Phill.

ok, so my computer hasnt been able to go into safe mode the last two times some bad thing has happened to it. i can easily get into the menu where you have to select how you want to start up, but when i select safe mode, it just sends a wall of text down, and stops at "mup.sys" each time. from there i have to reboot to get it to do anything.

now my main problem is that i disabled the graphics card i have installed in the pci and the motherboards default graphics card (i wanted to use the original one so i could transfer my graphics card to a different computer), so i cant really do much about getting into windows to change that, with out being able to run in safemode.

any solution would be great.

Yesterday when i logged on there was a little box in the middle of my screen from Norton. It said something, i dont remember what, but it would need to reboot. there was a yes and no choice. i clicked yes. My system rebooted and it came back in safe mode. i selected return to standard and it scrolled through about a page and a half of lines or comperter file info, then flashed a blue screen with writing on it but too fast to read it, then the windows screen appears and you think its going to open fine...then it flashes back to the safe mode. All choices on that safe mode screen bring the same results. you can get into bios but nothing there helps. also you can hit f8 and get what looks like the real safe mode screen...but none of those do anything but start the cycle all over again. I have put the OS disc in the CD but the computer cant or wont read it. Anyone having this prob, heard of it, or have a sulutioon?

I hope I have put this in the right section, forgive me if not.

I was wondering if anyone could help me with a problem I have been having.
My Dad's computer doesn't seem to want to start at the moment. It goes to start up, the initial screen comes up, and then the second screen that flashes up (the black screens with the white writing...I hope this is making sense!), and then after that it just beeps and then starts again.
Sometimes it goes onto the screen with the options of start windows normally, start windows in safe mode, safe mode with networking etc...but none of the options work, it just restarts again with the same result.
He had to borrow an XP home disc from my uncle as his computer is, well was, running that and he cannot find his own, but it wont boot from that disc. I have been into the bios to enable it to boot from disc first. He also has a back-up disc which he said had a repair function on it, and that works, yet after it apparently repairs things, there is no improvement. There isn't anything else useful on that disc. After exiting from the contents of the disc a black screen comes up with A:\> I tried typing D:\> but it said it was invalid. I then typed C:\> and the c promt came up, but everything I tried typing such as CHKDSK returned the message 'bad command or filename'.

Hello all, newbie here and competely lost. Here's the sad story. I was wiping the keyboard off with a dry napkin while having my eye's on the tv for a second. All of a sudden I hear the harddrive take off and things starting to happen. The last thing I seen on the screen was the word hibernate... in the middle of the screen, just before everything shutdown. I've never used hibernate in my life, not even sure how. Anyway, now my pc wont boot up, not even in safe mode. All I get is a black screen with white letters. It says:The last attempt to restart the system from it's previous location failed. Attempt to restart again? Delete restoration data and proceed to system boot menu. Continue with system restart. That's it, there's no cursor or nothing works. I've hit every key and rebooted a thousand times and I just get the same screen. I don't even know the easy things to do on these so I'm hoping this is just something simple that everybody knows about except me. So somebody tell me what key to hit to fix this please. Thanks

Hi... I have got myself into a problem... You see, i was fixing a computer that crashes all the time, when fault finding i pulled the hard drive (sata) out and put it into my system (ide) which WAS working perfectly fine to try and resolve this issue... I managed to fix the other computer, but now my computer kept loading windows, screen went black then starts up all over again, and again, etc...

So i booted into safe mode and run chkdsk...Ok, ran chkdsk /r... ok. So next option was to run windows repair... which i did... and upon restarting, still the same problem... Keeps rebooting... Now i can go into safe mode as it displays a message reading 'windows cant continue set up in safe mode, please reboot' Catch 22!!!

I was gonna use SeaTools program to check the drive next but coz i can log onto windows what can i do?

Iv also disconnected all other hardware to rule that out, found a faulty stick of ram too...

Any help?

I guess you're tapping the F8 key after you press the power button?
Some PC's will work tapping the F5 key.
Mine works using either one.

How to start Windows in Safe Mode

To use the System Configuration Utility method

1. Close all open programs.
2. Click Start, Run and type MSCONFIG in the box and click OK.
3. The System Configuration Utility appears, On the BOOT.INI tab,
Check the "/SAFEBOOT" option, and then click OK
4. Restart your computer when prompted.
5. The computer restarts in Safe mode.
6. Perform the troubleshooting steps for which you are using Safe Mode.
7. When you are finished with troubleshooting in Safe mode,
open MSCONFIG again, on the BOOT.INI tab, uncheck "/SAFEBOOT"
and click OK to restart your computer

I don't have an answer to this, but that screen, I believe, identifies the operating system version at the top and should proceed to "windows is starting up".

There may be an extended delay. How long are you giving it?

On the other hand, once you do enter Safe Mode, the screen may be black and say "Safe Mode" but you are at the desktop with a taskbar and start button.

Avira found a DIAL virus, still problems with IE google search affected and then Modzilla, AVG found nothing, Avira found it again, a microsoft product found nothing then Kaspersky found the nasties a rootkit (?) and another trojan. Instructed to do a system restore restart.
Now the laptop wont start up windows. It scrolls back to black screen safe mode restart. Safe mode doesnt work nor any of the start up options. Theres a flash of a blue instruction screen but that wont show up. Done the F8 key trick etc.
Other problem is the Win XP software was preloaded, no rescue disc.
Did a Sony Vaio F10 computer check which came up clear but am not progressing as worried about losing data if there is a better/another solution..
Any ideas?

Answer:XP wont start even in safe mode

There might be a partition on the drive that allows you to boot and restore to factory fresh conditions. What is the Sony model number?

I have Windows XP (Home SP2). My PC won't boot in Safe mode. It ignores the F8 key. I recently (with TechSupportForum help) cleaned out a trojan. I don't know if the failure to recognise the F8 key is a legacy of this process. It certainly used to do it, last time I tried, but that was some time ago. Can this be fixed? Or is there an alternative way of booting into Safe Mode?

I have a Sony Viao VGC-RA840G Windows XP Media Center Eddition. it was working fine all this time 2 yrs, till after a power outage, today. I try to start it, get to a screen where these option are given;
Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt

Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)

Start Windows Normally

But none is working. It restarts but keeps going to this same screen with these options.

i dont have a a-drive to use a boot disk. I dont have the cd cause this was of the shelve purchase. I can use F2 to get to the BIOS screen or F8 for startup options or f10 which will take me through a full systems restore to factory defaults but will erase all personal files, which defeats the whole purpose. I have tons of photos of my 15 month old boy on there which potentially will all be lost. Is there a way that i can restore windows only w/o having to do a complete restore. I spoke to the tech chat support at sony and they say the only solution is to do a full system recovery and i should work with a 3rd party (that they keep pushing - called drivesavers- to have a back up made and do a data recovery excercise) Is this truly the only solution or are there possibly other ways to accomplish this?

Any suggestions would be helpful THANKS in advance

I recently got a virus that I can get rid of and normally I would use safe mode to help get rid of it but cpu restarts everytime I try safe mode.

Other problems include sound wont work unless I unplug and then plug speakers back in, also wont find wireless internet, yahoo bad request everytime i start firefox (no big deal, but still annoying and means something wrong), and some advertising spyware everytime I google something. Avira wont start either.

Im assuming these are all related somehow.

Ran SuperAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes, and Avira boot cd and problems persist.

Not sure where to go from here

Help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Answer:Solved: wont go into safe mode

Hi hoopdawg61,

Look at post#7 at the thread below for a way to avoid having to tap F8 to get into SM:
A shortcut method to get into Safe Mode

I have it implemented in my boot.ini file, and it also allows you to get to the Advanced Options menu by tapping F8 once before the default timeout period located on your msconfig window display.

A reboot will be required to get the selection menu it brings up, but you will never have to keep on tapping F8 wondering if you will ever be able to get into Safe Mode again.

Before you try it, however, you may want to try running, if you don't like modifying boot.ini:
and click on the Startup tab, and check the Safe Mode box - another way to get into SM.

Hope someone can help me.

I start my computer and it goes to the screen that lists "start in safe mode", etc. I have tried all choices and it tries to start but then loops back to the same "start in safe mode", etc. screen. I have tried F8 F10 F12 and trying to boot up from the Windows XP cd. It just keeps looping back. I have called Geek Squad and they can't come check it for a week. I hope I can fix it on my own. Is there a way to get around the loop and boot up or is it toast.

I know a bit about computers but i ain't the best an ain't bragging.
But i know a problem when i have one.
I wanted to get into safe mode in windows but cant.
I press f8 then select my operating system then the drivers start to load windows in safe mode.

The problem i get is it hangs on one driver, so I'm thinking this driver could be missing or is corrupt.
I have run chkdsk an have use the options to fix all errors but windows still wont start in safe mode.

I checked for Virus and Spy-ware but still no joy.
Also if this driver is missing or corrupt i cant replace it because i cant get into safe mode.

I have also tried the sfc /scannow in cmd but keep getting the message please insert windows xp disk in CD drive D:
The disk is in there i put it in ???? ????

Also don't ask me to do a restore as i have no restore points to go back to as i cleaned up the comp a few days ago.

Any suggestions as to whats going on??

Thanks in advanced

I have a Dell Studio XPS8100 running with Windows7 Home Premium Service Pack1, 64-bit OS.When I purchased it I also had Dell put in a Tv card (Hauppauge WinTv HVR-1250) figuring I might be able to watch some of the Tv Channels from the area where my family lives.

Anyway here are the list of issues I have been having over the past couple years. The first issue I noticed was when I went into Windows Media Center and clicked the Internet TV feature or the program, the Windows Media Center program would shut down. So I called Dell and they worked on the issue for a couple of sessions that included numerous hours of my time and might I add the difficulties in understanding the tech, but the end result was that the issue was never fixed and so I just gave up on the tv feature all together and started using the computer to do Cad drawings which is the main reason I had purchased the unit.

Over the next couple of years working with the unit I noticed that once in a while Explorer would stop working and restart itself once in a while, Then the other day I installed a new Cad program and the program would starts itself to the part of the program where I would start using it and then just dissapears of the screen.

In the same fashion that Media Center did. So in trying to figure out if I could fix the issue, thinking that perhaps another program might be conflicting with the Cad program, I decided to start the computer in Safe Mode, when I do that the computer boots in safe mode ... Read more

To anyone who can help:

I just bought my computer about 30 days ago off tiger direct. My friend put windows xp pro. on it and it worked for about two weeks. Now when I start it up it goes through the system checks and then goes to the selction screen for safe mode. No matter what I pick, it says windows failed to start because file is corrupt WINDOWS\system32\drivers\ntfs.sys. It then says insert start up disc and press r at first screen. I tried putting in a startup disc for xp home to reinstall but it goes to the same screen and reboots whenever I press a button.

So you can't even use the Recovery Console at all? If you can, try the following:

Put your Win XP cd in and boot, goto the recovery console, then get to the c prompt, pressuming thats your system drive! and type the following.

if that dont work goto recovery point again and type fixboot.

If i hit f8 i can go into some things but then it says it cant find any problems in the start up and there is no recovery point. I also do not have the repair discs. HELP!!!! If anyone can help me out with this it would be much appreciated.

Anyway, for the last few weeks my computer had started running weird. Suddenly and frequently freezing up (especially while loading games), and also music would skip quite a bit. Two days this problem became much worse as games were almost completely unplayable due to excessive skipping, the same day I downloaded and installed a new windows XP update and then rebooted. Right after rebooting on startup i was brought to the startup selection screen (Start in Safe mode, last good config, start normally, etc) and no matter which selection i choose im brought to the Windows XP loading screen for about 10 seconds and then right back to that first startup selection screen and it just cycles like this forever. I would like to fix this without formatting my harddrive if possible as i have some schoolwork on there that i need.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thankyou

Greetings NovemberWhiskey, Welcome to TSF!

How to perform a Repair Installation of Windows? XP.

(The Windows? XP CD will be required for this procedure.)

Please Note: Performing a "Repair Installation" in this manner does not delete any Personal Files, it just 'repairs' the core of the installation.

Restart the computer and as soon as it starts to 'fire up' continually tap the Delete key so that access can be made into the BIOS...once in here, reset the boot order this way...CD/DVD
HDD (or IDE0)
Floppy/Other device (if you don't have a floppy).
Insert the Windows? XP SP2 CD in the Drive; then, Save and Exit the BIOS.

Reboot the computer; a screen will appear, that says... Boot from CD.... Press any key to Boot from CD...follow the will then progress to a Blue screen and load the basic drivers.

A prompt will appear to press r to enter the Recovery Console...PLEASE DO NOT DO THIS, as another option will come up to allow the option to 'Repair' the installation, and select the partition that needs repairing... please select this option.
Once that's done, it will continue to load; then, it will want to reboot, so just let it!
The computer will then be returned to the previous "Black Screen" saying Press any key to boot from the CD... this time, DON'T...just let it reboot itself and it will then go to the next phase of the 'Repair Installation' where you will need to press F8 to agre... Read more

Hi All,

I have again been given a friends PC to fix...but again the repair is beyond me so i am here asking for help

The PC is custom built with XP installed on it.
The PC wont start or even go into Safe Mode, it just crashes and starts the entire routine again, this continues over and over.

I do get a screen before the boot starts which says the following:

We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this.

If you computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was automatically shut down to protect your files and folders, choose Last Known Food Configuration to revert to the most recent settings that worked.

If a previous startup attempt was interrupted due to a power failure or because the Power or Reset button was pressed, or if you arent sure what caused the problem, choose Start Windows Normally.

Then the normal options are displayed, with Safe Mode and so on. None of the options work and the PC just keeps coming back to this screen.

I have spoken to the guy who the PC belongs to and he said there were no recent hardware changes but is not sure about software.

Is there anything that can be done to fix and get the PC working again?

Thanks in advance

I am using an emachines M8605 laptop with Windows XP 64-bit. Now my computer freezes everytime I unplug the powercord. Also, it completely pauses and shuts off the hard disks after 3 minutes or so of inactivity, and I have to use the mouse or keyboard to make it start again. The computer wont shut down properly, but in safe mode none of these problems exist. It shuts down, stays running no matter how long im away, and the power cord can be taken out at will. Can anyone give me some insight as to what might be the problem? Thanks.

I don't know when it happened, but I started getting a constant request to reboot from CA Security Suite after an update. It returns everytime I reboot. I checked with CA Support, and the Tech wanted me to boot in Safe Mode with Networking. The process gets to a certain point, and then reboots itself having never gone into Safe Mode.

I have since done a Windows Repair from the CD. I even performed the process offered by that is supposed to fix all Windows problems to no avail. I have just completed the Windows XP Cleaning Procedure from this site, and the situation remains the same. Please do the following:Get a look at the error message presented by the BSOD (blue screen of death) ....Start tapping the F8 key after you press the ON button, and continue tapping until you are presented with the "Windows Advanced Options Menu" screen.
Use the UP/DOWN arrow keys to select "Disable automatic restart on system failure" and press the <ENTER> key.Your system will attempt to restart normally, but when it crashes, it will not re-start: Instead, you will see a BSOD with error message.
Record the error message details (contained in the areas outlined in red, in the above example image), and post in your reply.

Last week, I was unable to install Microsoft updates. They failed every time. I overcame this by doing a system restore to an earlier date before the previous updates. They then installed. However I was left with Microsoft Net framework 3.5 Service pack 1 which failed to install. I went to Microsoft download site and downloaded from there.
The my troubles started, in that now on opening my machine it tries to configure these updates and says on screen "configuring 3 of 3" gets to 87% then closes automatically and restarts the process overagain.
I tried to open in "safemode" but exactly the same thing happens. Is there anything I can do to stop this, or am I forced in to doing a restore to factory settings, or I note that I have another option of "last known good configuration (advanced)". As I am not advanced this causes me concern. Any suggestions are most welcome.
