Computer with dual monitor setup showing black screen on game launch

Question: Computer with dual monitor setup showing black screen on game launch

Just purchased two Dell U2715H 27" monitors the other day and a Dell XPS8900 tower.

intel Core i7
16GB Ram
NVidia GTX 960
I am having an issue where when I launch two steam games I run into a crash. The games i'm trying to run are "Pure Pool" and "Pool Nation FX". Both games sometimes run without any issues, but occasionally when the game has ended the screen which I was gaming on will turn completely black, not even backlit, just black.

Also when I launch the games sometimes the monitor in which the game is running will be completely black, not even backlit, but i'll still be able to hear the sound.

What is really odd is that when I close the program such as the pool game, the black screen will still remain. (please note I can still use task manager on my other monitor).

Also, sometimes when I finish playing either game I won't get any black screen, but when I come to restart my computer one of my monitors will be black, not even backlit as before.

I can run DOTA 2 without any issues at all. This PC and monitors are both new purchased this week.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

One thing I also notice is that when running in Window mode it tends to perform better, but yesterday as I was playing Pure Pool, the screen just went randomly black even when in windowed mode.

Hey,
First off thanks for taking the time to help me on this. I just recently started using a dual monitor setup. The whole reason I wanted to run this was so that I could run a web page while i was running a game. It did not take me long to realize the inadequacies of my foresight in this quest for freedom from alt tab quirks, like the mouse not syncing with the game reticle (how is that word spelled!?) or color skewing, because the game locks the mouse inside the window the game is running in. So panning over is a no go. My question is whether or not there is a way that I can set up a dual mouse system. I have a custom built computer. My main monitor is plugged into my graphics card and my off monitor is just plugged into the HDMI port on my motherboard.

Answer:Dual screen dual mouse setup for Game and web page use

If anyone has any other ideas let me know. I have never seen the setup Willburforce is looking for.

You can plug multiple mice into a PC, and both will work, however, both will control the same single mouse pointer. Even if you had a mouse and a touchscreen, the mouse's pointer will immediately go to your finger the second you touched the screen.

Galactic Civ 3 and Dungeon of the Endless have the same issue. Black screen, but sound and mouse seem to work. (both through Steam)
I have an ASUS N550jk with a GTX 850m Nvidia card, i7, 16g RAM, and win 10 64bit.

Nvidia driver is up to date, intel integrated HD 4600 is an old driver, but the newest ASUS has available. I'm wondering if that is the issue, because it was for win 8.

Anyway, I've messed with compatibility settings, steam settings, ran as admin, changed nvidia settings for the program, screen resolution.... I'm out of ideas now. Reddit boards got no answers, and I'm waiting on support through the game, but wanted to try here because MG has some of the most helpful/knowledgeable people I've encountered. Thanks in advance!

Thank you for any and all help,
I have a home built Rig. Running Win7 RC 7100. Very happy with it. I just had a DVI/HDMI adapter, 15ft HDMI 1.3 cable and a 20ft coax cable delivered. MONOprice.com for the win on those(less than $20 delivered in less than a week)
Anywayz, I set up the cables and all to my Toshiba 37" LCD 37HL67 and the coax to my reciever. audio is working. And even the dual monitor set-up thru win7 works great. However, I am having a "desktop fitting the FULL screen" problem.
It is showing black barz top, bottom, left, and right. Not fitting the complete screen. My TV res is 1366x768. which i have win 7 set to. it seems to be the fullest on the entire screen. But not completely. It does not matter if i make it the main mont or not. Wont change. My GPU is a ASUS 4830 from Newegg(another winner ). I do have the latest drivers and even tried to play with the CCC and started seeing problems becasue i was doing a trial and error sesh and i stopped quickly. I am not PC inept but I am not the most savy creature either. This one is beyond me at this point. If anything is needed let me know and i will reply asap. Thank you in advance.

Hello, I running a dual monitor setup with the following specs:

E8400 Dual Core at 3.00Ghz
8 GB DDR2 Ram
Nvidia 8800GT
Vista 64 bit

I have been using a dual monitor setup with relative ease for over a year now, previously on another computer and now on this one. Today, for no reason at all my primary monitor went black secondary one worked just fine. I was not even using the computer at the time, so it was strange for me to see that happen as I was reading from my bed.

I quickly restarted the computer and tried the normal tricks, I found that I could still move my mouse over and click and drag windows from that monitor to my second one. Curious about this, I turned it off and back on and saw the display of the monitor flicker back on, clearly showing the desktop with no visible problems. The problem was, that the display would once again go black after about a second or two.

I thought it might be the cables, so I switched them, but alas the working monitor worked with no problems and the blank monitor stayed blank. I could still move the mouse over onto it and quickly turning the thing off and on allowed me to drag this internet window over to the visible monitor

Now, I consider myself pretty good when it comes to handling technical problems, but this is one I can't solve. I've gone into the display settings a dozen times and nothing makes this monitor display. Interesting enough, when I go into hibernate the monitor flicks on for a few seconds before no long... Answer:One Monitor in Dual Setup suddenly turned black.

Does the other monitor work in the primary port? Does a monitor work in the "broken" display port as a single monitor? I would propably try reinstalling your video drivers, might be nothing about the monitors. (don't try if you do not get video out of either of the ports with only one monitor plugged in, will be quite a pain to do with a black screen)

Hey guys, I currently have a dual monitor setup with the extended display setting on Windows 10 and it works perfectly. However, I recently bought a HDMI cable to plug in to my TV/computer so I could duplicate my main monitor on to the TV so my wife could watch me play games(she likes watching me game for some reason). The TV will duplicate the main monitor, but when I do that it disables my second monitor that has the extended display. Is there any way to have three monitors or screens where you duplicate the main monitor and the third monitor, then have the second monitor as an extended display? I have a Radeon r290 graphics card if that helps at all.

Alright I was playing through the walking dead game fine no problems then I had to go eat dinner so I paused the game (hit the esc key) and my monitor shut off and said no signal whenever I turned it back on. My mouse and keyboard also started shutting off and on and nothing I pressed (alt+F4, ctrl+alt+delete, etc) nothing got any response. So I shut off my computer booted it back up tried to play the same game again got the same issue. Then I tried to play something else and I got the same problem so whenever I launch any game my screen shuts off and computer essentially crashes. When Windows boots back up it says that it has recovered from a serious error similar to when you encounter a BSOD but doesn't ask you to send a report to MS.

Also whenever I come back from the error windows for some reason attempts and fails to re-install the wireless receiver for my 360 controller. However it works fine again once I unplug and plug it back in again.

So far here is what I've tried:
1. Uninstalling the game that started this.
2. Re-installing my video drivers.
3. Wiping my video drivers with driver cleaner in safe mode then re-installing my drivers.
4. Re-installing direct x using a setup file from a random steam game.
5. Doing a system restore from as far back as I had (April 25th)

hi,

I have been experiencing an issue with my monitor lately. It started when I was in-game (LoL). The screen would turn on and off by itself at random moments. It got worse over time and now I experience it often (mostly when I watch youtube videos on my 2nd monitor). I tried to look my problem up but didnt exactly find anything that described it the way it happens. I tried disabling the 2nd monitor, but still then I would sometimes (less often though) have the same issue. It also gives a message that says something about the screen that has been reset (pc is in dutch so I dont know exactly what the pop-up is in English). It only happens when running games.
I hope someone can help me out!

Thanks

Hi all,

Yesterday I turned my computer off and everything was fine. Today in the morning when I turned it on, my second monitor didn't display anything. I restarted the computer and nothing; I switched the cables positions and then the one that was fine went black and the other one started to work. Then I thought that it could be a defective video card, but when I connect only one monitor it doesn't matter where in the card I plug it.... It always works !

I'm running build 10122.

Ideas?

I,m a rookie with Vista so hear goesI'm playing music from the internet using iTuneAfter 30-40 minutes returned to the PC and the music was still playing and the screen saver was switched on .Moved the mouse and the screen went Black with the pointer still working and the music played on.pressed every key and mouse but nothing happened.Had to reluctantly switch off.On reboot it was back into black screen after about three steps. I placed the recover DVD and it came back to life. After reading the book (yes! If all fails read the book ) I checked the power site and I was on NO sleep actions etcMy question is :- What happened in the first placewhen the PC did not come back to me. I know its not advisable to switch off when working but I had no choiceSuggestions would be appreciated

Answer:Black monitor screen showing pointer only

Ive had this problem in the past and it is a power setting that causes this issue. These steps should sort out your problem; The screensaver comes on for awhile and then goes blank. This probably means that the power settings of your monitor are set to turn off the monitor at the same time or even before the screensaver is started. How to fix this:Go to the the screen saver tab of the display properties (found in the windows settings control panel)In the screensaver section you will see a "Wait" entry box. This is where you time the amount of time after which, the screensaver will start. Set this to 3 minutes.Lower, you will see the "Monitor Power" section. Hit the Power button to change the power saving settings of your monitor. In the "Turn off monitor" entry box, put a value that is greater than the "wait" value that you have put in the screensaver. Eg. 10 minutes. The next time you leave the computer without keyboard or mouse activity, the screensaver will start after 3 minutes and the power of the screen will be cut after 10 minutes. That will allow the screensaver to play for 7 minutes. Try the above and see how you get along.

Answer:Screen shuts off, computer Freezes at game launch/randomly

Hi,What you may be dealing with is an incompatible game and OS. Do you know whether the game is 16 or 32 Bit architecture? And the Bit depth of your OS is what? For example, the popular pinball game Space Cadet worked great on Windows XP, even though its a 16 Bit game, because Windows XP contained a mechanism to make a 16 Bit application appear as a 32 Bit app to the OS. But the same game often times won't work on Windows 7 systems because the OS has no means of converting a 16 Bit app to a 32 Bit compatible application. If its not a game issue then the two options that are most likely at cause are a memory chip gone bad or an OS that's been corrupted in some way. I recently had to reformat my hard drive and reinstall Windows 7 from scratch because a USB power surge corrupted some critical system files (fortunately, the files were self-healing once I found the proper ones).Check those things out and let me know how you fare.Regards,BearPup

I've been trying to use the laptop screen as secondary monitor in a dual-screen setup but I can not change it in the display properties. The option of selecting an external monitor as primary screen is grayed out. Only option is to use the external monitor as secondary screen or clone, but that's not what I want.
Things I have tried:
*Laptop in docking station
*Update videocard drivers
*Use UltraMon

Any thoughts on this?

I need help for my 2 monitors I'm not sure what's up with one of them.
On the left I use (DVI to VGA) and the right monitor, my main one I use (mini HDMI to HDMI)
This one, the main one displays 'no signal' I've been using it for a couple months no problem working fine and a couple of days ago while on my computer it just displayed 'no signal' while my monitor on the left (vga) stayed on working perfect.
But the computer recognized the monitor still being visible as I can move things to it and when I access it on 'chrome remote desktop' on my phone you can see that it's still being displayed (picture attached below) click here and the other pic below is what I see irl, sorry for the bad lighting it's late here.
Anyway I'll get the simple suggestions out of the way
-Yes it is selected as 'HDMI' on the monitor.
-Yes the HDMI cable works as it works with my PS4 and the PS4 Hdmi cable also tested on it with no results
-Yes the monitor works, I plugged in the VGA and it displays, I also plugged in the PS4 over hdmi and it displays my PS4 no problem
- And I also replaced the 'mini hdmi adapter' and that hasn't fixed it.
So any suggestions and help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks.

Hi, new user here!

I have an issue with one of my monitors and/or my graphics cards (and/or Windows 10, just to complicate things).

I have been happily using Windows 10 with a dual screen set up for months, and both my screens have been plugged into my external graphics card. At the beginning, the graphics drivers (Nvidia Geforce) conflicted with the stupid Windows 10 auto updates resulting in double black screen, but I was able to sort it out by plugging one of the monitors into the internal graphics display and have had a stable system for over a month.

Yesterday Windows 10 insisted on downloading an update and crashed the whole thing. No problem, I plugged the main monitor into the internal, uninstalled what the Windows graphic drivers and refreshed the system as I had done previously. The second monitor came on and I restarted the computer to allow me to replug the main monitor into the external graphics card.

No luck. The main monitor remained off, even though the second monitor was clearly working on the external graphics card. The device manager said all the graphics cards were working with no conflicts.

I have tried every combination possible now. I have deleted and reinstalled the graphics drivers several times. I have tried the main display in both the external graphics card ports, but it will only display (in terrible low resolution) on the internal graphics card. The second monitor works in every slot (in good resolution), the main monitor will only work on ... Read more

Windows XP (not sure if it's professional)
Nvidia 9400
2+ gbs of ram
500+ gbs of hard drive

currently i have done this to try to fix the problem (and have not yet figured out whats wrong):

Can anyone tell me what i have to do? i have spent $200+ trying to fix this and nothing works. I have tried to play other games such as Minecraft, DC universe online, WoW, and maplestory. I'm running dual monitors and I wanted the background to span across both screens. The only way I found that I was able to do this was to set my left screen as the primary monitor and set the background to "tile". I then moved the taskbar and all of the icons to the right screen because I wanted my real primary screen to be the right one. I'm running a Radeon HD 4870 made by Asus and my two monitors are both 24" 1900x1080 AOC 2436VH and 2436VW (one uses dvi input, the other hdmi). My operating system is Windows 7 64bit Professional.

So now that all of the technical stuff is out of the way, let me show you what the issue is:
http://royalty-ro.com/forums/uploads...1586543-U1.jpg
(link only because it's a rather large image)

So where the screen is split on the right side there are two small horizontal grey lines, I boxed them in red to make it easier to spot.

These two lines show up over anything I open on the computer including the browser I'm typing in right now. I know it's not the monitor because if I scale the screen-size using my graphics card the lines move with the screen scaling. I should also mention that if I make the right monitor the primary monitor these lines disappear (they don't show up on either monitor). Any ideas?

Answer:Double Monitor setup, two odd lines showing up on secondary screen (software related)

I would recommend trying out a program like Ultramon (not free) or DisplayFusion (free version for just different wallpapers: DisplayFusion: Multi-Monitor Taskbar, Multi-Monitor Screen Savers, HotKeys, Multi-Monitor Wallpaper, Windows Logon Changer and more...), where you can set each monitor to have its own wallpaper instead of tiling it across. Try that, and maybe that will solve your issues.

Since it's showing up in screenshots, it's definitely not something with your monitor, and not likely something with your graphics drivers.

Hi guys, I need a bigger viewing area becuase my little 15" laptop screen isn't cutting it so I want to get a cheap CRT. This refurbed 21" sony looks nice and for a good price:

http://www.accurateit.com/details.asp?iid=323

Now I need to know if I can use it with my computer. My display properties show this:

Since there are 2 monitor settings (the 1st one controlling the laptop screen) I assume my video card can handle 2 monitors, is this right or do I need to check something else? Also will the 2 monitors be able to run simutaniously?

Now the other problem that I'm not so sure about. When I had a desktop the monitor plug was big, I don't remember exactly what size it was but I don't think I have the same connector on my laptop. My only open connectors are 2 USBs, a PS2 and 15 pin. Will I be able to connect the monitor to my laptop?

Thanks

Answer:Dual monitor setup with laptop computer?

You'd have to find out specifically what kind of pin the monitor is. If it's a normal VGA adapter then yeah it'll work.

Also yes they will work simultaneously if you wanted, you can either have the bigger monitor display whats on the laptop or you could have one screen be the desktop and the second screen be your extended desktop.

Also you could plug a mouse and keyboard into the laptop and simply use the laptop with the lid closed as the computer and just use that monitor. Lots of options.

Hi everyone,

I recently uninstalled a program called Bumptop from my computer. It basically makes your desktop 3D - mostly a gimic, but it was fun for a while. While uninstalling it, a browser window opened and said "page not found". Then the uninstall process got hung up. About 5 minutes later a window opened that asked if i wanted to send an error report. Then the monitor went black. I rebooted and it's still black. I tried plugging in a different monitor, and it still doesn't work.

I have two monitors set up on this computer and the secondary monitor works fine, but I can't see any of the windows that open (like my video properties) because they all open on the primary screen. Im totally stuck here. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I am running a brand new alienware computer (win7 64 ult) with the new 23" LCD that it came with. It has an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580. (2 DVI outputs) with the most recent NVIDIA drivers
When I connect an old CRT using the DVI-VGA adapter as a second monitor everything works fine.

When I connect my old 17" LCD using the same DVI-VGA adapter, however, BOTH screens go black!!!!! the old 17" LCD says "OVERSIZE RECOMMAND 1280x1024"
(btw, it really is "recommand", not "recommend")

When I disconnect the old 17" LCD, after ~20 sec the new 23" LCD comes back on, and says (sometimes) that the display recovered from a crash.

(In the past, when installing windows on a different computer using the old 17" LCD, i have had to plug in a CRT and change the resolution/refresh rate, then switch back to the LCD)

I have tried doing a clean installation of the drivers. I tried lowering the resolution/refresh rate before plugging it in.

Is there anyway to set the default output resolution when you connect a new monitor? Why would it cause my other monitor to shut off?

I have a IBM Think Pad T42, the latest driver does not work properly when running dual monitors. My OS is Windows XP Professional. I'm using identical monitors, no matter which monitor I plug the DVI cable into the resolution goes off the screen (Scrolls)when selecting 1680 by 1050 (manufactureres recommended resolution) the display is streched too wide on all resolutions. If I reverse the cabling to the other monitor and use VGA resolution is fine. Envision says the problem is from the video adapter/driver. The Thinkpad T42 has "ATI Mobility Radeon 7500 IGP" adapter, ATI site does not have that driver nor do they say they support IBM or Lenovo. Will there be any new released drivers for this adapter? or is there anything I can do to force the resolution to fit the screen on the monitor where I'm trying to run DVI? That says it all - your hard disk drive is failing (S.M.A.R.T. = Self-Monitoring Analysis Reporting Technology).

I have two monitors I'm trying to set up on my old PC. My system is running two EVGA 560ti in SLI, with a mini-HDMI to HDMI going to the newer Viewsonic, and Mini-HDMI to DVI going to the older Dell monitor. I can get them to both display, but then if I let the system sleep, the primary monitor bugs out and goes black. Sometimes I can get the screen resolution window up on the secondary monitor, and when I can, I can usually get the problem resolved by changing the primary to portrait and back again, or changing the resolution. The other way the screen goes black is if one of the monitors is unplugged from the input, and I plug it back in, it will make the other monitor go black. What the heck is going on? I've reinstalled the video drivers twice.

Answer:Dual monitor issues, screen going black.

Hello all, I recently replaced my MB, and RAM.

I am running two monitors, each on its own video card (GEforce 8800). I am experiencing a couple different issues.

1)When I come out of the screensaver the main displays horizontal position is off. I need to use the auto adjust to fix it.

2) When I start up or reboot the system, the desktop will come up for about 10 seconds, then both screens will go black for about 60 seconds. While this is happening I hear the windows noise that occurs when you plug in a usb/hardware device. Then the monitors come back on and all is well. The other side effect of this is the gadgets on the desktop are scattered everywhere. All of the gadgets from the secondary display are moved to the primary, the other ones are relocated.

Finally, a side note, for a few months now my secondary display will take a long time to turn on when I start the system, It will eventually come up with a completely white screen. then if I turn it off and back on, it will start working correctly.

Any help appreciated, not finding much through searching.

Answer:Dual monitor issue - Black Screen

(2) and the side note may indicate that the secondary monitor is beginning to fail. I say that because of my recent experience ...

I'm using a laptop with a docking station (HP) and external monitor, and normally have the laptop lid closed. I was having a terrible time getting the external display to work when I turned everything on or brought the system out of hibernation. After much (wrongly directed) cussin' at HP and Windows 7 I isolated to the monitor--if I kept it on, or turned it on an hour or so before the rest of the system, there was no problem. Bought a new monitor and have no such problems now.

Hello.
I just set up a second monitor for my PC but it isn't working properly. I have 2 VGA ports on the back of the PC to which the monitors are plugged in. The second monitor isn't in the device and printers list, not recognised in the Change Screen Resolution settings and Detect doesn't find it. The current monitor that works is an LG and the one not working is an Asus. I connected the second monitor before booting the PC and it doesn't work.

Answer:Dual Monitor problems - Black screen and unrecognised

2 VGA ? Gfx cards don't usually have 2 VGA. I'm guessing you are plugging one monitor into the onboard VGA and the 2nd into the gfx card. The usual method for dual screen is to use 2 sockets on the card eg 2 * DVI, DVI + VGA, DVI + HDMI etc.

So I recently installed windows 8, and got some issues with a screen going black for 2-3 seconds pretty randomly. From what little pattern I've experienced, it occasionally occurs when closing and opening tabs in Opera, haven't tested with other browsers or other tab based software. Mostly because of the randomness of when it happens it will be sort of difficult. First I thought of graphic driver, which is why I posted this here, however there is one thing that have me slightly doubting that assumption. I run dual monitors, and only the one monitor, in which the browser was placed, had the black screen. The other screen is perfectly fine, on and not black. Surely a driver problem of the graphic card such as a restart of the driver would blank out both screens?

I'm wondering if it could be some metro interference or something like that? Anyone experienced anything similar with any idea how to sort it out? Its nothing more then annoying, but in the long run that will get bothersome.

PS: Yes, I have checked the wiring

I just installeded the latest version of lenovo "screen reading optimizer". However, my W520 frezes when playing a YouTube video in Full screen on my dual-monitor setup. (the video is scrambled and the audio continues to play) I have to reset my system using the on/off switch. I have un-installed "screen reading optimizer".  EDIT: oops - it happended again without "screen reading optimizer".   I suspect it is an Adobe Flash issue.

Answer:W520 freezes when playing Full screen Flash video on dual monitor setup

hey huberth, have you tried updating Adobe Flash?Since this is a dual monitor setup, what's your setup like ?laptop (primary) - monitor (secondary) ?laptop (secondary) - monitor (primary) ?laptop (primary) - monitor (secondary+extend from primary) ?laptop (primary) - monitor (secondary+mirror/clone from primary) ?no matter which configuration you have, could you try flipping it .. so that if currently, laptop screen is primary.. set external to primary.at the same time, drop by to http://support.lenovo.com and check if your graphic driver is up to date.

Change where they connect to the video card. To see if it makes the digital one intermittent. If it doesn't follow then I'd say your monitor is dying.

My computer is showing black screen with cursor blinking. I guess system is not booting. Problem is my cd rom is not working . But i have protable DVD writer available with me. How do i format my computer. As i wish to format it now.Pls advice.

Answer:My computer is showing black screen

Boot into Safe Mode, uninstall the current drivers and try using drivers that were released previously. If this doesn't work, uninstall the drivers totally, boot into Safe Mode with Networking and see if Microsoft offers drivers for the card during Windows Update. You'll see it on the left after it finishes searching to see what updates you need. It'll say something like "Hardware Optional".

Until yesterday my Windows Vista Fujitsu Siemens laptop was working fine.

Today I went to turn it on, and while the 1st load up screen appears (the one that says Fujitsu Siemens, and to press F2 or F12 to enter diagnostics or bios screen) the screen then just turns black; the Windows loading screen doesn't even show.
Pressing F2 or F12 on the first screen have the same effect

If you leave the laptop to try load up for a couple of mins, and then press the power button to enter standby mode; when resuming from standby mode the log on screen appears for a second, but then promptly returns back to the black screen of death.

Also the fan doesn't seem to working - could this be connected?

The only thing I can think of that's happened recently is Microsoft did install updates two days ago.

Anybody any ideas?

Answer:Computer loading up, but showing Black Screen of death!

Quick update:

I have connected laptop to tv and that works fine when working in safe mode. However if you try and start windows normally nothing appears on either screen.

Also the fan is working intermittently.

I'm having some serious troubles with my main PC, my gaming PC, and it's really messing things up for me.

I was just parusing around like usual on my computer, it runs Windows 7, and I allowed it to download the usual updates and restart itself. When it shut down and began restarting, I notice that it loads up the logo, briefly flashes what I think is called a Bios Post page, and then goes to a page that is nothing but a blinking "__" sign. It does nothing here, won't continue, and I can't enter or do anything. It just endlessly blinks, before disappearing and the computer screen shows nothing but black.

Can I get some help here? I'd really appreciate it. .___.

Answer:Computer won't get past black screen after showing PC brand logo.

Have you tried to start in "Safe Mode" to see what happens? (Pressing F8 repeatedly immediately upon booting).

I have HP Desktop Tower Pavilion with windows 10, I had two HP S2031 monitors in dual mode, worked fine. One of them died, I got a good deal on a larger HP 27er monitor.  I hooked it up, they were both working fine ... it was using a default monitor
setting ... and then yesterday the computer downloaded some updates, and in doing so, it downloaded the driver for the HP 27er and installed.  The next thing that happens is the older HP S2031 starts to go dark ... like it is going into sleep mode, and
then it is totally black.  On reboot, it starts up with both monitors working, but within seconds of reboot the HP S2031 goes black again. The HP S2031's buttons do nothing, other than the power button, which turns it off and on, but that is it.
I have done all troubleshooting, I did not even have them set up to sleep, all settings are at NEVER.  In coming here, I have done all the fixes I can find for similar  that are posted for similar issues, the Windows Key + W... nothing.
The create new power plan ... nothing.  the device manger>display adapters>disable then enable ... nothing.  and lastly Start>Control Panel>System>Device Manager>display adapter>driver tap>update ... still nothing.  HOW
DO I GET THE HP S2031 MONITOR TO NOT BE IN SLEEP AND HAVE BLACK SCREEN.  I can not figure this out and am not finding any fix.

Hi!
I recently bought a DVI cable to plug my external LG monitor to my laptop to run nVidia's DualView (stretch format) across the two monitors. I'm using a beta driver (169.04 from laptopvideo2go.com), and when I enter nVidia control panel and go into the setup additional monitors tab, it only lets me choose "choose only ONE monitor". So I did that just to test that my monitor was plugged in right, and it worked. So I KNOW that my monitor is working and is being recognized by Vista. But when going into display settings byt right clicking on my desktop, it also only recognizes 1 monitor. Is it my beta display driver messing my Vista up? Or what could it be?
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thank you

Answer:Solved: Dual monitor in Vista not working. Only showing 1 monitor.

for drivers to work properly in vista i'm pretty sure you have to have signed drivers, since it's beta are you sure they are signed?

Hi all,

I have been running a dual monitor setup on a Windows 10 PC and ever since a windows update a few weeks ago I have been having the following issue..

When I boot up the PC initially I see the same display on both screens, all perfectly normal. However when I land on the PC login screen all i see is a black screen with a cursor.

Just before the PC loads up this screen, my 2nd monitor (which should display the password login screen) loses signal, so I know the PC is loading up fine, it's just not displaying on the monitor.

Strangely when I manually switch the PC off via the power button and then switch it back on again everything starts up fine, the 2nd monitor is posting/receiving a signal.

I have checked for updates on my graphics card but I have the most recent ones. The graphics card is quite old (roughly 7 year old Nvidia card.

I have looked at the display settings menu and the monitors appear to be configured correctly.

Does anyone have any ideas as to how this can be solved?

Thanks,

Chris

Hi,

I am using windows 10 pro with 3 monitors attached to a GTX770.
2xDell U2715H monitors (1440p) - work monitors
1xPhilips 1080p monitor - client monitor.

Two monitors are used all the time for work in a dual monitor setup. The third monitor is placed away from me facing clients. When I want to show stuff on the pc to the clients, I will open the display settings and select the duplicate one of the 1440p monitors to the 1080p monitors. The display of the 1440p will scale down to 1080p. When clients leave, I toggle back the settings. The third display is only on when clients need to see something as it is a hassle for clients to come see the stuff the other side of the desk.

Is there a way to automate this process? Maybe some sort of macro/hotkey which I can configure the commands so that I don't need to go adjust the settings every time. I would just like two macro/commands that turns duplication on and off.

Thanks

I am having troubles getting my dual monitors back.
Initially had a GeForce 8400GS 512MB PCI video card and was using the on board video (Biostar G41 M7 MB) for dual VGA monitor setup.

I've installed a Radeon HD 6670 1GB PCI-E video card with monitor one setup via DVI to VGA adapter on output one and 2nd monitor on VGA onboard video.
I cannot get the second monitor to detect in any configuration. Tried looking in BIOS of MB, using 2nd DVI (w/ vga adapter) on Radeon card.

Am at a loss and I hope I have provided enough information for some assistance.

I don't understand why you are using a combination of DVI (to VGA) out of your HD6670 to one monitor, and also using the VGA out of your motherboard to the other monitor.

Am I interpreting what you've done correctly? You are using just the DVI output from your HD6670 through a DVI-to-VGA adapter and on to your first monitor, and also using the VGA output from the onboard graphics of the motherboard to feed the second monitor? If so, this is very wrong.

Your new HD6670 has TWO video outputs of its own: one is DVI, and the other is VGA. You should connect your second analog monitor to the VGA output of the HD6670, not to the onboard graphics VGA output.

Also, if you can disable the onboard graphics in the BIOS that's definitely what you should do when you install an external video card as you've done. At the very least you should give priority to the new PCIe video over PCI (which was your old GeForce card, and probably o... Read more

Hello I basically need conformation that I'll need to buy a new monitor in order to have a dual monitor set up with my current system. I'm not super tech savvy so if you need any other info please let me know.

I have a Radeon HD 6670 with 3 ports, an HMID, VGA (which is my monitors type) and DVI. Each port has a stamp next to it that indicates what port type it is/supports (the VGA has a CRI stamp next to it though). My main VGA monitor works fine with the VGA/CRI port, but my second I have to use a VGA to DVI adapter and it's not working.

I've gone through a lot of forums, and found some conflicting information. So I really want to know is it possible to use a converter/adapter or will I need to just go out and buy a new monitor that has a DVI hook up?

I hope I don't need a new monitor, I'm on a very tight budget. (la sigh)

Answer:Radeon HD 6670 Dual Monitor setup not detecting 2nd monitor

I would try one of these before giving up on the monitor:

Rosewill 10ft. DVI-A (24+5) Male to HD15 VGA Male Analog Video Cable w/ Ferrites Cores, Model RCW-900 - Newegg.com

Forget adapters, you might not a have a compatible one, the DVI connector has many variants.

Look at that cable end and make sure it would fit on your video card's female DVI connector (it should), it's DVI-A (analog only) to VGA which is analog only....

I've been running a multi-monitor setup for a while now, with an ASUS VG248QE 144Hz monitor as my main, and one or more spare monitors as secondary displays. I've set the ASUS monitor to 144Hz without issue in the past, while the other monitors stay at 60Hz.

The other night, Windows wanted to update. I figured it was the usual patch session, so I let it do its thing. However, after restarting my computer, I noticed that my ASUS monitor would only operate at 144Hz if it was the only monitor plugged into the system. When I try to set it higher in the Nvidia control panel, it just reverts back to 60Hz after applying changes. I updated my graphics drivers (though I was only one version behind) and even sought a special ASUS driver for the monitor to resolve the issue, but nothing has helped.

Did Windows recently add a forced refresh rate sync between all monitors recently? If so, that really sucks because I only own one 144Hz monitor.

Answer:Dual monitor setup locks 144Hz monitor at 60Hz

Are you sure the other monitors are independent (dual or multiple mode) rather than cloning the main monitor? If they clone the main monitor, then this explains the 60Hz refresh rate, as all settings (resolution, color depth, refresh rate) should be common for all monitors and the others can only do 60Hz.

Running dual monitors in Win 10 and when going through the Color calibration steps on monitor #2 (Control panel / Display / Calibrate color) the settings stick as long as the 2nd monitor is active.

If I switch to single display (Windows Key + P / PC Screen only) then the 2nd monitor loses its color calibration. Also anytime I reboot my PC (Even if I have both monitors active) the 2nd monitor loses my calibration.

The 2nd monitor has a fairly strong bias for the color Green so I can always tell right away.

I'm probably overlooking something and was hoping someone might of dealt with this before

I am not really an expert here, but I am wondering do you set the default calibration as well as the current calibration? I have always done that so I can't tell you whether it will cause your problems if you don't set it, but I can tell you that I have never had the issue you are having.

You could get a better AMD processor if it is a socket 939 and then there would be no need for a new motherboard, a Skt 939 Athlon X2 would be good, if you dont wanna upgrade ur mobo.

The issue started yesterday, I had torun to the store. When I got back I moved the mouse and the screen went black. Turned the tower off and back on, it flashed the vista boot up screen then went black. However I know the computer was running because I heard skype log in. I fixed it by pressing f8 during the boot up screen.

Well the problem happened again this morning, woke up, moved the mouse, black screen. However this time f8 didn't help at all. I have no idea what's wrong or how to fix this. I have windows vista.

Hi
anyone know anything about why my monitor just turns off and I get the orange light instead of the green one, and the computer is still running/
I had 3 different video cards replaced. Also my son took it home and we tried different size monitors.
It has all the correct setting at on all the time, no stand by mode is on.
I would appreciate any advise.
Do ya think it couild be the cpu or power supply?

Answer:computer monitor shuts down get black screen

i have never seen a cpu shut down for heat before but i know some motherboards do have this option to save them. that might be the cause

First of all, hello! And thanks for your time!

I am running a dual monitor setup with my TV hooked up via HDMI to my laptop.

Everything was working fine before, I always had the laptop as my main display yet I could play a video or a game fullscreen on the TV.

Since a couple of days, as soon as I put something in fullscreen, it immediately goes on my laptop, regardless if it's open on my TV or my laptop.

I don't remember changing/installing anything that could've changed that...

I checked a bit in the AMD vision software and the Windows control pannel but I can't seem to solve my problem without switching my TV as the main display.

I also made a quick search on google as well as here but the problems were mainly with Flash, which isn't in cause here.

Here are my system specs:

Toshiba Satellite L75D
Windows 7 home premium 64-bit
AMD Radeon 6520G

Thanks!

Djoulz.

Answer:Dual monitor setup - fullscreen goes on wrong monitor

My desktop has my LCD monitor through Display Port and my TV through DVI. What I do is have my multiple monitors set to "Extend these displays" and make the LCD the primary display. Ive included two pictures of what my settings look like, first is with the LCD(1) selected and the second is the TV(2).

I will say that sometimes the program you are using forces the fullscreen to go to the primary screen, I have had this trouble with Everquest a number of years ago. There was a program that you could run with the game that allowed you to put the game window into boxes, different screens and a bunch of other things.

I primarily use my TV for watching movies/tv, Media Player Classic does a great job of being able to open to fullscreen in either monitor, regardless of how the monitors are setup.

I have the 2nd setup through a vga to hdmi cable but it just sits there black with "check signal cable."

2nd monitor is an lg2241

Tried:

- multiple re-boots
- downloaded a driver from LG but don't see that it did any kind of install. Double clicking it's zip file opened it and clicking on the three files did nothing but open gibberish code.
- at screen resolution I see multiple displays and I have it set on extended.
- Clicked detect and identify
- #2 says display device on vga
- tried unplugging and reconnecting the cable (hdmi to vga)

I'm lost. SOS!

lol!

Thx,
Dave

Answer:Dual monitor setup hdmi to vga on 2nd monitor shows nothing

Dave welcome to the Seven Forums.

That cable won't work unless the VGA port on the computer/laptop supports digital (highly unlikely), as VGA is an analogue signal and HDMI is digital. To get it to work you would need some kind of converter not an adapter, which that cable essentially is.

Assuming this is your monitor,

LG E2241V-BN: 22" Full HD LED LCD Monitor | LG USA

is says it has a VGA port on it. If it does then just use a plain old VGA cable.

Have a large screen tv on wall connected with HDMI to computer. Have a Samsung monitor on my desktop. Cannot make the desktop my primary monitor no matter what I do. (although have had this working before). We had a break-in and monitor was stolen. So replaced with new but cannot make it primary.....always defaults to samsung tv on wall. I have tried all normal solutions.... unplugged all....began with desktop monitor....added tv, etc. Have spent way too many hours and am sure answer is simple. HELP PLEASE!

Answer:wrong primary monitor in dual monitor setup

Right click on your desktop, select Screen Resolution, then click on the screen you want to make primary. Select Multiple Displays, and it should be there!

Need help with dual monitor setup. First time trying to do it.

2 Problems
1.
Second monitor does turn on, but is only showing native resolution (1024 x 768) but it has the ability to go up to 1280x1024.
I want to to be able to set it to 1280x1024.

2.
Second monitor will not boot up along with computer.
I shut down my PC, the monitor is still plugged in, and it doesn't wake up automatically.
Things I've tried
- Updating drivers, obviously. (Nvidia, etc.)
- Uninstalling default driver of second monitor in Device Manager then rebooting computer, then plugging out and replugging the monitor back in (so it reinstalls) because it doesn't boot up on its own.
- My Power Options is set to "High Performance" so that's not the reason why my 2nd monitor isn't booting up with my PC.
- I have tried plugging in the VGA cord of my second monitor into the mother board but it didn't come up.
General Information
- The second monitor is an HP Compaq LE1711
- The second monitor is plugged into my GPU? via a VGA cord into an HDMI to VGA Pigtail Adapter (company: ATIVA), into an HDMI port.
- The main monitor (1920x1080) is plugged into my GPU?, via a VGA cord into VGA to DVI-I Dual Link Adapter, into a DVI-I port.

Picture of what I'm seeing:

I'm pretty sure I've got some of the terminology wrong (I'm not a computer expert).

Any help is appreciated!

I have a dual monitor setup, where the laptop is hooked to a 2nd monitor (TV) thru an HDMI . I primarily use the 2nd monitor. Can I blank screen the 1st (laptop screen) monitor, yet continue to use the 2nd monitor with the lid open for access to the keyboard?(I noticed with changed settings in Win7 control panel, I can close the lid without cutting off [sleep, hibernate or shut-off] the computer and had to reduce the 2nd monitor display to fit the visible screen. But to use the keyboard one has to open the laptop lid, which kicks in the 1st screen)Thank you

I recently purchased a dual head ATI video card and have started using it's ability to display to my TV. This has given me the opportunity to watch movies while my wife is still surfing and I love it.

However

My current setup has the TV set up as monitor 2 and in "theater mode" so that it catches any video signal from the main monitor and duplicates it. The TV is across the room and doesn't need to benefit in any way from the mouse or as an extended desktop in this mode, and in fact the mouse pointer goes missing if it drifts into the second monitor when movies are playing anyway.

Right now my only real "solution" has been to set up monitor 2 in the upper left corner of the main monitor so that only the very tip of the screen shoots the mouse pointer across the room. This almost works. What I am looking for is a solution that keeps the mouse pointer contained so that it doesn't leave unless I let it out.

The solution I'm looking for is probably not from ATI, but more likely another multi monitor control program or some cute utility that doesn't let the mouse go to certain places on the screen.

Can anyone recommend a better mouse trap? My mouse is trying to escape.

upgraded to 9.1 on Win7 64bit, but each time I launch ITunes, I keep getting the setup screen.

"Please wait while Windows configures ITunes."

Once it goes through the process ITunes works, but each time I open ITunes, I get the same routine.

I went back to an older version and I'm having the same issue. Each time I open ITunes, it goes through the configuration screen and setup. It creates another ITunes icon briefly on the desktop and than the new icon disappears and than ITunes opens like usual and works, but each time I open ITunes, I keep getting the same problem.

I don't understand what is going on. All other applications are working fine.

Any ideas?

Answer:ITunes 9.1 setup screen after each launch

After looking into the issue and rereading my post, I solved the problem.

It's a shortcut issue on the desktop. ITunes icon wasn't pointing to anything. No target or start in.

I recreated the shortcut from "C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes" and problem solved.

Hi,

I have a PC which has a dual monitor setup. I have obtained a third backup screen. I was wondering if this screen could be a mirror screen for one of the monitors. I have students which come to my room all the time, so it is easier if I can hook the monitor near the desk rather than they stretch their heads or come over cramping the space there.

The monitor has to be mirrored as I can see what I'm doing on my side and they can see on their side.

When I launch certain games from Steam (not sure if it's steam only games or what), games like Counterstrike: GO, Daksiders II, Saints Row The Third, my computer gets a blue screen, and then reboots. The blue screen says something about BIOS. I guess this information would be of use to you:

Processor: AMD FX(tm)-6100 Six-Core Processor
Manufacturer: AMD
Speed: 3.3 GHz
Number of Cores: 6
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560
Manufacturer: NVIDIA
Chipset: GeForce GTX 560

Total Memory: 4.0 GB
Memory: 8.2 GB
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Edition Service Pack 1 (build 7601), 64-bit
Service Pack: 1
Size: 64 Bit
Edition: Home Premium

Just note that I can play games, I can play games like Arma 2, Dota 2, Team Fortress 2, Red Orchestra 2(funny how all of these games end in 2, maybe i can only play games with 2 in them lol) even games not purchased from Steam like World of Warcraft.

I do not know if I need to fix the Motherboard, the videocard, some people say it's the DirectX, i honestly don't know too much about computers and all the technical stuff. Thanks for reading, I could use all the help I can get.

Hi and welcome to TSG.

Is this a prebuild, branded PC like a HP, Dell, Acer etc? If so, what is the exact make and model number?

What is the exact make, model and wattage of the PSU?

Have you ever changed or upgraded any hardware since you got the machine?

Is Windows and all your drivers fully patched and up to date?

Could be drivers, PSU, graphics card, RAM or something else at this stage

Hello,
I have a computer that will sometimes give me the Blue Screen of Death when I try launching a game. Before, it would only happen sometimes, but now it seems to happen almost every time. It happens when I launch any of the games on Steam (Half-Life 2, Garry's Mod, etc.), BioShock, Crysis, and Call of Duty 2. The computer quickly restarts, so I can never have time to write down any of the details on the screen.

My computer is:
AMD X2 4400+
1GB RAM
Radeon X1900XT 512MB Card
ASUS A8R32-MVP Deluxe
Windows XP SP2

All of my drivers are up to date, and I am just confused on what to do. I don't know if this will help too much, but I included a HiJackThis log in case it can help. So what could I do to fix this problem?

Thanks in advance

I have a dual monitor set up through HDMI. My laptop works just fine but the second monitor went black during a gaming session and hasn't worked since. I have restarted, verified its on HDMI setting, updated drivers, checked refresh rates.

The Second monitor is still connected. I can move things there (cant see it) because it is black. When I right click and click screen resolution I can see the screen pop up.

I think the color scheme may have changed during the gaming session and that might be the culprit. It was an old game - 2009

Question: Dual monitor setup

I am setting up a new HP computer for dual monitors
I want to installed a3DFuxion GForce MX4000 PCI graphics card and use the CD card for the primary monitor and the stock (on motherboard) card for the secondary monitor.
Both monitors are VGA

Will this work?
The 3D Fuzion card requires me to uninstall the current display driver using Add/remove programs. the current system uses ATI video. I am hesitant to uninstall the current video unless I am sure the new setup will work.
any help is appreciated

Answer:Dual monitor setup

I think that's going to depend on how the MB graphics controller is handled by the BIOS. I believe some will be automatically disabled if you have a second video card.

I don't think the PCI bus is the best choice for video, doesn't that machine have an AGP slot?

Question: Dual Monitor Setup

I recently purchased a HP Pavilion Desktop - 510-p020 thnking that the advertised "multiple display capable" meant I could use the normal VGA to DVI connections.  However, this tower only has VGA and HDMI connections.  How can I setup 2 monitors for dual monitor access using VGA and HDMI connections?  Do I need to now buy a monitor with HDMI connection?  If, so how would I set the monitors up for dual access.  I just want to make sure if another purchase is necessary that I purchase the right accessories.

Answer:Dual Monitor Setup

@Dman2015?, welcome to the forum. Here is a guide that will help you understand what can be done with adapters.  If you already have two monitors, you can use adapters to connect them; HDMI (digital) to VGA (analog) or VGA to HDMI or DVI (digital), etc.  If you want to buy a new monitor, I suggest getting one with a HDMI connector.  You will get a far better picture with digital than you will with analog. Please click the Thumbs up + button if I have helped you and click Accept as Solution if your problem is solved.

Question: Dual-Monitor Setup

Hi,

I have integrated Intel GMA 4500 with a DVI and VGA output from my motherboard. Would it be possible to run dual monitors from both outputs? Any thoughts are greatly appreciated as always!

Thanks,
James

Answer:Dual-Monitor Setup

I'm not sure, since I haven't heard of dual monitor configurations directly from a motherboard with both type ports. Anyway, can you get, or borrow, a second monitor to test it? If it doesn't work, then you'll have clear evidence that you'll have to buy a video card in order to use two monitors.

Question: Dual monitor setup

I have a question about the usage of dual monitors. I have 2 Lenovo widescreen monitors I would like to use but can only seem to get one of them to work at a time.  Each Monitor has a ports for DVI and VGA. I am using a Graphics card with only DVI and HDMI. I have one monitor connected to the DVI input on the GPU and the VGA of the other monitor connected directed to the  CPU. Is there a way to get these to both work or must they both run on the GPU. I would need to buy and VGA- HDMI adapter to use both ports on the GPU.  Lenovo Thnkcentre 9196Windows 7 (64b)ATI Radeon 4350 512mb

Answer:Dual monitor setup

I believe you can not have hybrid setup in M57p. So you'll have to drive both monitors from discrete graphic card (Radeon). You will either need HDMI->VGA adapter or HDMI->DVI adapter / cable for second monitor ...

Question: Dual monitor setup

Is it worth setting up two monitors. I have an opportunity to get a brand new gateway 19" monitor for $100, still in the box. How hard is it to set up and what would the main benefits of dual monitor setup? Most of all would I really like it if I did a dual set up. Any body else have a dual set up, do you like it. Thanks.

Answer:Dual monitor setup

Hello Bassfisher,

If your graphics card as a secondary output on it, then your good to go with just connecting the monitor to the secondary connector on the card and installing the monitor's driver (if it has one). Pretty much that simple.

It really depends on your needs, but it makes having multiple windows opened a lot easier to see and organize by dragging some of them over to the second monitor.

I like it.

Question: dual monitor setup

hi all, can someone give me basic instructions on setting up dual monitors
thanx

Answer:dual monitor setup

You need a graphic adapter with two outputs; connect each monitor to each output. For example most lower priced video cards will usually have a DVI and VGA out connectors, most monitors will have a DVI and VGA input connectors. Whatever configuration you choose, just make sure your monitors have the right connectors to hook up with the video adapter.

Question: Dual Monitor Setup

Hi, I have just bought 2 new graphics cards in the hope that i'll be able to run some kind of dual monitor system.

In the AGP slot I have a 128MB GeForce4 MX 4000
In the PCI slot I have a 64MB GeForce4 MX 4000

I have spent today trying to get it working... to no avail.

Every time I set one monitor as primary (or install it first), as soon as I apply changes to 'extend my desktop on to the secondary monitor' the screen just freezes and shuts down before having to restart windows from 'last known good configaration'

Another thing that is quite weird, when setting primary VGA device in the BIOS, it only gives the option of 'onboard VGA' or 'AGP VGA' nothing about the PCI device.

Yet if I only have the PCI card plugged in and take out the AGP card, the PCI card outputs as default monitor when the BIOS is set to boot from 'onboard VGA'!

*confused*

Answer:Dual Monitor Setup

Never tried it in WinXP but did in Win 98SE. THe PCI Graphics run as the primary monitor. If you are trying this in Win XP try designating the monitor connected to the PCI Video Card as primary monitor.

I am using Windows 7...
I have two monitors which mirror each-other currently but they are not independent of each-other.
I am trying to get the mouse to move to the next screen when scrolling, currently moves on both.
Also I would like to have a full screen up watching a movie for example while keeping my email in full view on the other screen.

I right clicked and selected "screen resolution" but that is when I get lost.

I also want to note I currently have an HDMI splitter, HDMI cable from my computer goes into splitter, with HDMI output 1 going to screen 1 and HDMI output 2 going to screen 2. Maybe the splitter is the wrong set-up for my needs?

I like the HDMI cables but I saw a video on youtube which says to connect the DVI from computer to monitor, then take VGA (blue cord) and connect from the main monitor to the secondary monitor but I tried doing that first before going the HDMI route and no luck. In fact, only time I got both screens to display is with the HDMI splitter.

Also...I tested the VGA and DVI on both monitors and got a picture when testing cable from computer to each monitor indepently, just can't get a connection frm monitor to monitor with the VGA cord, only get a display with HDMI splitter.

So...do I have the wrong cables, does a HDMI splitter not help get independent screens?
Or...maybe I did the setup wrong in the screen resolution page from the picture below. I tried several methods from drop down including restarting computer but... Read more
