T520 Battery Firmware Update Failed

Question: T520 Battery Firmware Update Failed

I tried to install a battery update on my Lenovo T520. The update fails with an "internal error" message being reported. The battery does not fully charge and now lasts only a few minutes once the charger is unplugged. The battery is a Lenovo replacement less then a year old.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

For Lenovo T520, Type 4242xxx an Update for the Intel ME Firmware is offered. There are to links to the update, with the same aim: http://pcsupport.lenovo.com/de/de/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-t-series-laptops/thinkpad-t...Gives the Link to package 83rf45ww.exe  The same file is linked here for T520https://support.lenovo.com/de/de/product_security/len-14963 It is described as Version 7.1.91.3272 in the download page for Intel Managmenent Engine FirmwareThe delivered Package 83rf45ww.exe starts an installer mentioning an earlier version 7.1.xx.1zzz, which should not solve the intel ME security issue (last number has to be bigger than 3000).The update does not work. Hi i have theEdge11 K3252545-A12 modelwith Battery 57wh model no : 42T4897 The Battery Monitor showing only 47.5wh overall capacity. This seems to be the same problem like the edge13 series. For these devices there is a battery firmware update but not for my battery.Again i know that batterys are getting worse after cycles but this seems to be bug because:1) the battery is 2 weeks old2) the battery shows in the energy manager as 47wh battery and not 57 battery. So the battery manager says "good" and no battery wastage.  Does Lenovo provide the upgrade also for my device and battery? see the links: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-75738 http://www.lenovoblogs.com/connections/2010/08/update-bios-and-battery-firmware-to-ensure-full-charg...

Answer:Solved: Edge 11 AMD K325 - Battery Problem need Battery Firmware update?

Hello mate, You don't have a problem with your battery. My T510 indicates the same with a 57wh. Under average usage patterns your ThinkPad battery maintains approximately 70% of its power capacity for the first year of operation. Average usage is defined as the number of recharge cycles. A cycle is defined as each time the battery discharges a total of 85% or more and is recharged it counts as one cycle.

Hi all,

After installing of Battery Firmware Update my brand new battery not recognized by notebook anymore.
It is completely dead.  I am fully upsert.

So, people, do not use this app if everything is fine. Application is not stable.

Battery Firmware Update Utility: 1.15 -Latest

Seems like internal battery memory was corrupted due to flashing interruption.
I assumed the root cause is internal software error.

I've tried the same on Windows 7/8/XP with all LnvBFU revisions (from v1.2 till v1.15) without any success.

But LnvBFU.exe still recognizes the battery, it still able to start flashing.
And I still have hope to install battery software correctly.

Dear Lenovo experts:
1. Please provide steps to correct this error.
2. Please advise how can I get logs of LnvBFU to figure out what's wrong.
3. Please fix this issue in the next LnvBFU revision.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Battery Firmware Update has killed Brand New E420 battery

Hi, I have a comparable problem over here. Got a brand new Lenovo Yoga 260 three weeks ago, worked completely fine until last wednesday. Processed some lenovo updates including Lenovo Solution Centre and Power Management and now my battery is dead. Everytime i turn on my Yoga 260 i get a battery error message after a few minutes that says the battery is not charging and it should be replaced due to a bad condition. When i open up Lenovo Settings and search for energymanagement it displays the same message telling me the battery is defect due to normal wear and it should be replaced. My problem is that the battery worked completely fine until the moment i installed some Lenovo software updates. I hope lenovo support can provide steps to correct this error instead of forcing me to return it and wait 2 -3 weeks. Thanks in advance.

I have a ThinkPad Edge 520, which I purchased with the higher capacity battery (42T4710). Recently when attempting to update the battery firmware, using the LenovoBatteryFirmwareUpdate  v1.13 it detects new firmware for the battery: Identifies the firmware: But then fails: Upon restarting the computer I get informed that the battery is invalid and will not be charged by the laptop. I have tried numerous combinations of updates (BIOS, power management driver, etc.), without any effect. Prior to this attempted update the battery worked fine. Appreciate any assistance.

Welcome to the Lenovo Community !

Sorry to hear of the problem you are having.  Are you sure you got a BIOS Update from Windows Update?  If you did, that is a scary thought.  Windows 10 is good for giving you OS and driver updates whether you want them or not. Giving a BIOS Update is kind of over stepping their bounds IMHO.

Have you tried this.....
1. Unplug the charger / adapter. 2. Press and hold the Power Button for 15 seconds. 3. Plug in and power up the system to see if the problem was resolved.

If that didn't correct the problem, can you access the BIOS Setup by repeatedly tapping the F1 key when you first power up the computer.  If you can access the BIOS Setup then your problem is most likely an operating system problem with a driver update Microsoft gave you.

Answer:"Error: Firmware update failed!!!"

Second line from the bottom says something about the AC not plugin. Updating the bios needs to have a steady supply of power thus you should plug the unit to ac. Then try again.

I have a 1TB Seagate Barracuda ST1000DM003-9YN162 like the one shown on this firmware update page:

Barracuda (1TB/disk platform) Firmware Update

Because i've been having problems waking from sleep mode I wanted to update the firmware on it from my version now CC9B to its current version of CC9D. I downloaded its windows update utility and ran it. Everything seemed ok, it shut down windows, restarted, ran the updater, then it said "FAILED" in big red letters then asked me to go back to Windows. I did, everything was ok nothing got messed up.

Why did it fail to update the firmware? Was it because I didn't have CC9C and it didn't want to skip from CC9B to CC9D? Do I need to update to CC9C first? What should I do?

The update utility says that it cant be run on "RAID Systems". My system is capable of RAID but I dont have a raid setup i use ACHI. Do I need to go into my BIOS and disable something that has to do with RAID? As far as I know I have nothing enabled that has to do with RAID. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I suspect that if your drive is not listed here: ALL FIRMWARE UPDATES - see here - Seagate Community Forums
Which I don't see, a firmware update is not needed nor compatible with the update.

My notebook is one of the first to come out of the assembly line and came with firmware 1.02.There's 1.08 BIOS that came out, so I tried to update it from Windows 7.  It took a long time, but it completed and the tool said to reboot.  That's all it said as far as I remember. Upon reboot, it started to give beep code.  I don't remember which it was, but it was something like 1-long 2-short or 2-long 2-short.  It kept at it for a while and I got tired of it, so I pressed and held the power button to kill it and then restarted it. This time, it got into BIOS, which said it was updating USB Type-C Controller Firmware from v12 to v13.  This FAILED and gave me the option to "reboot and try again."  I picked that, but it never retried. I didn't feel comfortable with this, so I flashed 1.08 BIOS again, this time from within the BIOS using a USB-stick (\Hewlett-Packard\BIOS\New\N73_0108.bin).  It went through much quicker than in Windows and at the end, it actually warned me that the machine may beep for a while after reboot.  Umm, thanks for the warning, now that it's too late.  Why didn't Windows update program give me the same helpful warning? Anyway, the machine rebooted, but it did nothing to try to update USB Type-C Controller Firmware.  I'm guessing it set a flag somewhere saying we're already at 1.08 so there's nothing new to do. When BIOS configuration is dumped using BiosConfigUtility.exe, it shows US... Hello Everyone! So here's the situation. I updated my m6-1045dx to Windows 8 Fresh Install. Among those that I applied was sp58572.exe found here which I will refer to as "patch". However, for some reason, the updater quit and now, my touchpad DOES NOT WORK. I think it's a firmware issue in the sense that I've already reinstalled Windows 8 TWICE and yet it still does not work. I think what needs to be done is to update the driver correctly and then use the patch to correct the firmware. The problem is that I tried restarting, shutting down multiple times, reinstalling the driver (both the one provided by HP for my model and the one on the synaptics website) to no avail.Everytime, I try to run the patch, I only get the error message "A synaptics pointing device driver is required for reflasing. Please install a synaptics driver version 15.1.6.0 or newer".The problem is that it doesn't work EVEN if I install a newer device driver. Any help you can give will be much appreciated. Thank you.

What is the status of the ODD in the device manager?
Are there any yellow exclamation marks?

I would recommend removing/deleting the ODD from the device manager.
Then start the registry and remove the upper and lower filters from registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

After that reboot the unit. Windows should recognize the ODD again.

Regarding the chipset driver;
The A10-1GW supports Intel mobile GM45 Express Chipset.
http://www.intel.com/products/notebook/chipsets/gm45/gm45-overview.htm

If you use the driver from Intel page then you should try to install the chipset in device manger. This will allows you to force Windows choosing the Intel driver

If your Surface Book, Surface Pro or Windows device fails to install a Firmware or Device Driver update, and which may be accompanied with a Blue Screen, then you may try this:
Open the C:\Windows\inf\setupapi.dev.log file.
Search for error Failed to install device instance among the recent entries.
Above this error you will see a remark saying which .inf file caused the failure. Let us say it is abc99.inf
Now open an elevated CMD, type the following and hit Enter: pnputil -d abc99.inf
Replace abc99.inf is the name of YOUR inf file.
PnPUtil (PnPUtil.exe) is a command line tool that lets an administrator perform the actions on driver packages. Here we are deleting the .inf file.
Now restart your computer and try to run Windows Update again.
Such corrupted Driver installs are being addressed in Windows 10 Redstone.

Had a notification that a Firmware Update was available, the download failed several times, then just seemed to "quit", but a bunch of other updates succeeded. When I look at my History I see that all the software updates succeeded, but the firmware update shows "failure" with error code 80200056. Searching I can't find any other info, checking for updates does not show the firmware update either. Suggestions on how to proceed, or to tell if I actually do have the latest firmware?

The Thinkvantage Toolbox is reporting that the battery is not holding charge (down to 32%).  It is less than a year old and has been configured for maximum battery life.  The warranty link brings up a firmware update that won't install successfully.  I've tried the full package, and doing one part at a time.  It always detects the battery, goes to the writing the firmware stage, goes directly to the second try writing n/1334 (I think that's the number) and then fails.  I've let it reboot and try again with the same result. The product is ThinkPad SL510, product id 28479YU, Bios version 6JET85WW(1.43). Any suggestions on how to proceed?  I've seen other posts that suggest that it may be a defective battery, but nothing on how to confirm that. Thanks, Andrew

Hello! I have an x250 notebook.Capacity of my internal battery flows down. Some time i opened lenovo power manager and checked battery. Internal battery is full charged with 12,18V, but external battery is full charged with 12.68V.It is very strange for me. As i know there is no li-ion battery with <4.2V full charge.I recalibrated the battery, no changes.Ok, It is possible that one li-ion battery has lower voltage then other two ones. I checked the voltage - 4.07. 4.07, 4.05 it is great result!Batteries are not charged fully, so capacity is lower then it should be. I found battery FW update for some lenovo notebooks, but i didn't find it for x250.Can you help me?

I bought 2 batteries original Lenovo 4.4Ah for the tablet on ebay. The battery was sell as new. When I try to charge it just blink ornage and no charge. The seller refuse to take back the battery telling the price was low take as it is. He said all other batteries he sell where ok however this was the last one they sell and they where few years old. Then I did open the battery case and mesure the voltage all batteries was zero. I decide to charge evey single cell wit USB charger and a resistor. I was able to charge all the cell to 3.5-3.6V with a total voltage of 14V. However the pin of the battery show 0V. After reading on web I find out that the firmware is in Ram and consume some power. The for such long period of time drain the battery to 0V, very good design.... to sell battery. Only solution out of firmware update is buy a used working battery and replace with the one I have taking care to keep power during replacement (this is quite touchy). Hey.. so I just bought a surface 2.. like new but the battery has a red x and will not charge. I've tried cleaning contacts, uninstalled battery in device manager and most other things. I feel like if I could get the system firmware update it may solve the problem and I can force the windows updates by uninstalling the battery.. when it reboots to install the firmware it show the surface logo and the "please wait while updating" it almost instantly reboots and goes back into windows. Any ideas here? Also is the battery difficult to replace? $16 on Ebay and I may give it a shot.

I've been using my Dell XPS 15 9550 for a couple of months now and everything was fine, i decided to connect it to an external monitor P2715Q through a Dell WD15 Type-C docking station, which working fine except for having the Monitor at 30Hz versus 60Hz. i've been facing alot of Blue Screen Errors, and one day found there was a firmware update for the Docking Station, the Monitor went blank and found the firmware was updating usually when i startup my laptop and it's connected to the docking station it gives me a warning message about the power being less than 60W so i unplugged the Type C cable connecting the dock to  the Laptop mid installation, it rolled back and i then figured i shouldn't have disconnected it. This morning i connected my dock as usual but it wasn't being recognized it's as if the Type C wasn't reading the Dock, i connected a Type C to Display port cable direct to the monitor to check if it was the port but that worked instantly, please help what should i do?

Hi all,

After installing of Battery Firmware Update my brand new battery not recognized by notebook anymore.
It is completely dead.  I am fully upsert.

So, people, do not use this app if everything is fine. Application is not stable.

Facts:

BIOS: 8HET44WW(1.26) - Latest
Operating System: Windows 10.
Power Management Driver: 1.67.11.8 -Latest

Answer:Battery Firmware Update has killed Brand New E420 ...

Answer:ThinkPad Edge 13 - Battery Firmware update not working

Hi and welcome to the forum!

You need to have latest BIOS version (which is 1.20 6ZET...) and Power Management driver.

See below text:

"Lenovo has bundled the necessary dependencies and the battery firmware update into a common package. Customers who prefer to download a single file may download the appropriate package for their type of system. These "dependency wrapper" programs have the following basic procedure:

Check the Power Management driver version. Update if necesesary.
Get the current BIOS and embedded controller version.* This requires another driver, the Lenovo System Interface driver. If this driver is not present, version 1.02 (81vu13ww) will be installed. This driver is part of the "Hotkey Features Integration" package, but only the System Interface driver is installed.
If necessary, update BIOS to the minimum version supporting battery firmware update. A system reboot is required if the BIOS is updated. The battery firmware update will automatically continue after rebooting.
Update the battery firmware. A system shutdown is required after the battery firmware update. The system will not automatically turn back on after being shut down.

Please click here for more detailed operation of the dependency wrapper programs."

Hope this helps.

Hi to all ! Did anyone of you manage to run the fwdphb03.exe successfully on a T440 or any other T4XX, T5XX in an enterprise environment with Windows 7 / 64 bit ? In our production environment we can start the update process but a few seconds later an error log is created. The log includes following information: Version: 2.22.000Update result: 244Error description: Read back chip information failed The update never runs successfully in our environment. Lenovo was so far not able to give us more detailed information about the requirements to run the software successfully and we have not got any further information about the error or the possible trigger for the problem. The only solution in the moment is to update every single ProDock on a preinstalled T440 without installing any system updates before. But that could not be serious for a large amount of ProDocks ! many thanks,Gerhard

Get a messagebox saying "battery not detected" and it's not charging from mains. So laptop has now turned into a desktop... as needs plugging in continually... making it almost useless for purpose. This happened exactly after firmware update a few weeks ago. By coincidence the management software also kindly informed me that it could manage the battery better and stop it wearing out by only charging up to 90% - fair enough, but don't treat me like a muppet and disable it without any way to get it back. Tons of Windows 10 updates today (after not being able to use it for a few weeks) but still no battery. I tried F1 BIOS but nothing there to enable the battery (only to disable it). This is frankly a joke - timing shows it's due to the firmware update because the battery was fine and lasted a couple of hours right before. In 25 years of countless laptops, have never had this problem - batteries weaken gradually but don't suddenly lock up and require a paid replacement suddenly. How do we run down our original battery properly before polluting the planet? Phil

Hi All, I foolishly ran the Lenovo software update tool and one of the updates that installed was battery firmware v1.13. The update failed part way through and ever since my battery is having an existential crisis - I know it's plugged in and 100% charged but it reads 0% (or sometimes a red X) and the machine shuts down when AC power is removed. Being out of warranty the phone line people just keep trying to sell me a new battery and have no ideas on how to fix the existing one. I've tried the firmware update multiple times but with no joy. Also tried sourcing previous versions of the firmware which doesn't work. My battery was not one of those listed for recall. Latest and best suggestion was that it may be a motherboard issue and I could confirm by plugging in a different battery to see if it works - with absolutely no suggestion who would let me borrow their battery and plug it into my possibly killer machine. Has anyone else had a similar problem and found a fix? Is anyone based in Perth, Western Australia and want to let me experiment with their battery? {you crazy fool!} Does anyone know how to contact an actual Lenovo person rather than the useless call centre (1800 041 267 from Australia, seemingly connecting to Malaysia or Thailand judging by the accents)? Consumer law in Australia would suggest these guys owe me a new battery regardless of warranty status but I don't know how I can force the issue if I can't even speak to them???&... This happened to me today. The solution is to restart the computer and enter the BIOS.  Then use the arrow keys to move to the config tab, then down to the power option, hit enter, scroll down to the disable built-in battery, hit enter, then follow dirctions on the right.  You will unplug the power cord to shut down the computer and when you plug it back in and turn it back on the battery will be recognized.  if not , try the process again as it took me two tries.  hope this helps.

Hello, I tried to upgrade to windows 8 and found that the touchpad became super sensitive and jumpy. Reading online I found a firmware that claimed to fix the issue and found it on HPs Support site. Mid install, it reported that it failed and forced a reboot on the laptop. When it was back up and running I found that the touchpad no longer worked. Its exactly the same issue as in these links: http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Software-and-How-To-Questions/Touchpad-Not-Working-After-Faile... http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Operating-System-and-Recovery/Touchpad-Firmware-Failed/td-p/23... I've tried to reflash and to get new drivers but they are not able to go through. The drivers install but don't fix anything. The flashing will quit saying I need drivers first even though I have them.  I've even reformated and put the factory windows 7 image back on but it still will not work. The solutions posted in the above links didnt work for me.  Does anyone have any idea on how I can fix this?

Hi guys,I am very happy user of Lenovo T520. I have upgraded to Intel 520 SSD disk and ram to crucial 2x4GB DDR3 and laptop is performing very well ! When I bought my T520, I bought one replacement battery- 9 cell battery(laptop came with 6-cell). I have used it about 10-30 times only and kept it always only 80% charged in cool place(actually at room temperature 22C approx). After one year of no-usage I wanted to start using this replacement battery again. I am very disappointed and confused. I have inserted my 9-cell battery with only 20 charging cycles and it has very low capacity and runtime. Please help me? What happned with my nearly 3 years old, but never used battery??? My 6 cell battery(about 200 cycles) is like new and performing very well(3 hours runtime and 95% capacity) See attached Many thanks for any useful advise

Hi All, I have a Thinkpad T520. It won't charge the battery (% charged stays at the same level) and it won't run from the battery only. If I turn off/remove AC power the computer dies immediately and it won't start up without the AC power plugged in. The battery is definitely good, it works in another computer. Is this a problem which I can fix myself? Can it be repaired? Will it be expensive? Will it require a new motherboard? It is not under warranty. Thanks, so much SV P.S. Any suggestions will need to be written in fairly simple terms, I'm no expert

Answer:Thinkpad T520 won't charge battery or run from battery power.

The problem is the charging circuit on the motherboard. It might be a fuse, but that is soldered to the motherboard, so unless you have a well-equipped repair place with a rework station (not a dealer) they cannot replace the fuse. If it isn't a fuse, it is probably a power transistor, and you are not likely to find someone to fix it. Probably, you will need a motherboard

Greetings everyone!I've got a Lenovo T520 running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit with Service Pack 1. Two days ago I upgraded Intel Management Engine Firmware to version 7.1.91.3272 via Lenovo System Update. Since then my laptop has lost the ability to sleep. When I press the Sleep key my laptop performs an emergency power-off and then asks me if I want to start Windows normally or in the safe mode when I power it up again. The hybrid sleep function still works, but it takes much longer than just dumping the current session into RAM. I tried everything: updated the BIOS firmware (1.46) and the Intel 3000 video card drivers (9.17.10.4229). I have the latest Lenovo Power Manager software (6.68.13) too.Is there a way to roll back the Intel Management Engine Firmware to an earlier version?

It seems like other folks have the same problem in Ideapad series.   When I plug in a charger, the laptop shows that battery is charing but, it never goes above 7% (w/ max battery life mode). According to Energy Management, battery status is fine.  After searching similar issues, I think it may be a problem with firmware, but I was not able to find a firmware update for IdeaPad series, Windows 8.1.... I have been using my laptop over a year, but never had this problem before. Can you please guide me through how to fix this issue?  Thanks for your help..!

After that reboot and install it back and see if there is a difference specially on the battery status. Also basing on your statement that the unit is with you for more than a year and you have not encountered any problem except recently it would seem that a battery replacement might be in order. Again before jumping into conclusion check the ac adapter and battery based on the procedure given in your hardware maintenance manual.

Hey, I own a Thinkpad E220 (5380-CTO) and the "Lenovo Thinkpad Toolbox" gives me daily alerts that I have a "critical battery issue". The link leads me to a page to download and update the battery firmware. "Battery Firmware Updates for Main and Slice (external) batteries - ThinkPad Edge E220s, Edge E420s, X1" http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?DocID=HT062049&AID=10429688&PID=3719336&CJURL=http%3A%2F... I've gone through all the steps to update the firmware numberous times, including doing the battery recalibration and I STILL get the daily "critical battery error message". Please help, the daily scans eat up RAM and it's annoying that I have to cancel it daily. The battery, from what I can tell, works otherwise. Thanks!

This started happenning a few days a ago after I have updated the ThinkVantage Toolbox system; and it is already driving me crazy... Does anyone from Lenovo ever read these community blogs??? Answer:Ideapad Z-500 - Battery firmware updated but still battery not charging

hi Aledef,

If you have the Lenovo Energy Management installed, can you check the following:

1. For Windows 7:
Ensure that Maximum Battery Life is selected

For Windows 8:
Ensure that Conservation Mode is disabled.

2. Uninstall the Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method under the Device Manager > Battery
   - Link to picture

When finished, reboot the machine and observe if the battery is now charing above 59%. If the problem remains, try charging the battery while the computer (about 30mins) and see if it goes pass the 59% mark.

If the problem persists, I recommend you contact lenovo on how to go about getting a replacement battery.

Hi all, i have read only once somewhere of my problem but have not found a solution:with a new T520 (4242-W18) equipped with a Core i5-2520M i have only 800 MHz and no means to increase this, if i work with AC plugged in and without battery (to preserve its capacity). All tests show no abnormalities and i found out, that the processor runs with normal speed (2.5 GHz and more) if AC is plugged in and also the battery is inserted. I have all the newest drivers installed, BIOS 1.27, the Lenovo Win7 professional system etc. and have previously also tried to do a complete clean install of a Win7 ultimate but nothing changed this. At present i work on AC with battery but that is not satisfying me. Has anybody encountered such a problem and/or has anybody an idea what might be the problem? Best regardsStefan

Answer:T520 Core i5 only 800 MHz on AC without battery, on AC WITH battery 2.5 GHz

This is intentional behavior. You can set a charging threshold on the battery through Power Manager to prevent it from charging fully. This will extend the lifespan of the battery considerably.

Question: T520 Battery

My ThinkPad t520's  battery shows 100% charged, yet if I unplug, my computer immediately shuts down as if there is no battery at all.  This was a sudden problem, but I can't associate it with any specific problems like computer being bumped or dropped, etc.  The battery almost feels a little loose (although it may be the same as always and just didn't notice this before there was a problem).  I cleaned the connectors but that didn't make any difference.  When right clicking on the battery icon and choosing "launch power manager" , nothing happens. Through the control panel I chose "power options" to find out any information I could there, but neither the "power manager" or the "battery information" bring up anything when choosing those options.  All other links on that control panel page work. Has anyone else had this issue or have any advice on how to fix it?  Do I need a new battery or is it a connection issue, or a problem within the computer?

My T520 originally came with a Lenovo utility that sat next to the tray and gave a nice indication of battery status. I had to buy a new hard drive and installed Win 8.1. Now the utility isn't there. How can I get it? TIA, Bill

Answer:Battery utility for T520 on Win 8.1

Good day and welcome to the community.

Presuming that your T520 came pre-installed with Windows 7, that battery indicator was part of the ThinkVantage Power Manager application. That application is not supported in Windows 8, 8.1 or 10.

Hope this helps to clarify.

Hi,Yesterday I've got my new shiny T520, with 9 cell battery.According to the spec  sheet, this battery should be good for 12-14 hrs.Today, after charging the battery to 100%, I've disconnected the AC only to find out that according to the battery meter I have ~5.5 hours left, with a 100% battery. How is that possible? Why is the battery time so low? Is there any specific action I need to take in order to allow for longer battery life? Thanks!

Answer:Battery life on T520

Most people are getting around 9 hours out of the battery, instead of the advertised 12-14. Even then, 5.5 hours seems very poor.Set it to Maximum Battery Life in Power Manager and see what happens.Do you have the integrated only model, or the Optimus one? What kind of programs have you installed?

Hey everyone, I updated my T520 a few days ago in an attempt to clear up some USB port issues (still apparently unresolved) and a new issue has suddenly appeared (or rather, something has disappeared): my battery is no longer recognized by my system. Where the battery icon should be in my taskbar is only a grey symbol that reads "Battery not installed" when hovering over it with my cursor. Interestingly, if I remove the power cord the device continues to run. The smaller Power Plan battery level indicator on the taskbar continues to read the power level just fine, though. I'm not sure what to make of this, or whether or not the issues are related, but I'm having strange issues trying to charge external devices (like my Kindle) too. The USB ports simply aren't recognized by the computer sometimes. As of this writing, my laptop just started to recognize the Kindle (after about 15 minutes of no recognition), but it won't charge the device. My specifications:Windows 7 Home Premium x64-bitIntel i7-2760QM @ 2.40Ghz8 GB RAMBIOS Version/Date: LENOVO 8AET55WW (1.5), 11/24/2011 P.S. I included the BIOS info, because I've read some things indicating that it needs to be updated, but I've not yet done it because I'm a little unsure of the need to do so. Thanks, in advance!

I guess this is a very old thread, but I am having the same problem with my ThinkPad T520.
The battery is fine, but it will not power the laptop. I'm thinking it may be a pico fuse on the motherboard.
Turning the laptop off for a few minutes as suggested does not work. Taking the battery out and pushing the power button for 30 seconds does not work. Buying a new battery just because Lenovo says my old one is dead does not work for me.
Anyone else having similar problems?

I need a new notebook for business use.  Main use will be MS Office (Word, Excel, Access) and general web surfing.  No gaming, CAD, or movie watching.  I'm very interested in all day battery life, as I don't want to carry a charger moving around the office or going to the courthouse for property searches.  I can keep a spare battery in the car for when I need it.  I'm looking at the T420 or T520.  Here are a few random questions:If I order the 55++ 9 cell instead of the 55+ 6 cell, does the 9 cell "stick out" on the back of the computer?I've considered getting the 55+ 6 cell model, and ordering an optional 27++ 9 cell slice to be able to add on when I need it.  Can the slice be charged separately, i.e., without being attached to the notebook?  If fully charged and not attached to the notebook, will it hold its charge til I need it?I've also considered getting the 55+ 6 cell model, and ordering a spare 55++ 9 cell to be able to switch out when I need extended life.  Same question, if fully charged, will the spare battery hold its charge til I need it?Will increasing RAM increase battery life?  If I order with 4GBx1 and decide to increase to 4GBx2 in the future, can I utilize the original 4GBx1 and simply add another 4GBx1 (of the same specs), or do I need to replace both with the same brand?Given my uses, am I ok with the integrated graphics, or do I need to spring for the Optimus NVIDIA switchable graphics optio... Answer:T420 or T520-Battery & Other Questions

Alright:1.) Yes, the slice battery can be charged separately, but you're going to need the external battery charger (http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-61244.html).2.) Yes, the 9-cell battery does stick out of the back of the notebook. 6-cell sits flush.3.) Yes, spare batteries will hold their charge.4.) You'll probably be fine with Integrated (the Intel graphics are better this time than in the T410/510). Also, Integrated graphics will get you better battery life than Optimus will.5.) Increasing RAM will not change your battery life.6.) Yes, it can be any brand. Also, you probably won't need more than 4GB anyways. If you need even more life (or don't want the 9-cell battery sticking out of the notebook), you can go with the Ultrabay battery- it goes in where the DVD drive is and gives you extra battery life (though that can't be charged outside the notebook unless you have a dock.)

T520 i7The Problem: Machine will not turn on when button is pushed.Steps Taken: New motherboard installed. Machine started up just fine. Turned it off and it would not power up when button was pushed. I unplugged the CMOS battery(the little watch battery) and plugged it back in and the power button works once again. Turn it off again and again it will not power up. If I leave the CMOS battery unplugged, then I can restart the machine, but only after I unplug the power cord and plug it back in; kind of like a reset between each poweroff/power on cycle. If laptop battery is inserted, it will not power on no matter what I do. It will only power on with the power cord. Laptop Battery checks out fine. I tried a new CMOS battery as well.Solution???

I have a HP Pavilion dv6t-7000 CTO. Today I decided to upgrade to windows 8.I downloaded HP's touch pad Firmware update and after running it, it says there's a problem while reflashing the firmware. And now, as you can guess, my touchpad is no longer working. I have the Synaptics device driver 16.2.15.0 installed. When I try to run the Firmware update again I get the Synaptics Reflash Error:"A Synaptics Pointing device driver is required for reflashing. Please install a Synaptics driver version v15.1.6.0 or newer"The touchpad doesn't show up in Device Manager, however, there's a Unknown Device and a PCI device listed in the Other devices section.I've tried to reinstall the driver and all but nothing worked thus far.Help anyone? Thanks in advance! Any suggestion appreciated.

Answer:Touchpad Firmware Failed

I actually solved this problem just several minuntes after this post. All I did was go to windows' mouse pointer settings and a pop up box appear offering me to uninstall the Synaptics driver. I have no idea how this differ from manually uninstalling the driver but click yes at this check box actually solved the problem while the manual methods didn't.

Hi, I have Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E330. few months ago I have got a few messages like "Battery Error" (I don't remember the exact text). From that time nothing changed with battery run time, if I remember well. However ,after some time the battery suddenly went from 5ish hours run time to one hour or less. I would guess the problem could be something like this https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/ht001086 but I haven't find any reliable tool from Lenovo to check the battery. Lenovo solution displays "Health: Fair" in the battery status tab. I have also tried to update battery firmware (http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds001322), but it didn't help. My Notebook is still in warranty. Is there any solution for this problem, or should I try reclamation? ThanksJan

Hi,I have this weird problem with my battery indicator. It doesn't work, shows gray battery and three dashes inside instead of the remaining time. The system (Windows 7) built-in indicator works properly however. When I open the Power Manager, it shows some random, impossibly high number of watts used. Each time I open the power manager, the value is completely different.  I haven't installed/updated anything recently, yet a few days ago when I've started the system, the battery indicator stopped working. Restarting the system doesn't help. What do I do now?

Hi,  I've looked through the forum but didn't find anything related.  I've bougth my T520 in April in US. It has a 6-cell 55++ battery. It's capacity should be 57Wh at 10.8V (that's what is written on it) but my Power Manager reports only 47.7Wh and It's been like this since I've bought it.  design charge: 47.52 Whdesign voltage: 10.8 V Full charge: 47.70 WhRemaining charge: 47.70 Whvoltage: 12.21 VFRU part number: 42T4791 Serial number: 22793 Cycle count: 7Bar code number: 1ZHFH13JLXPManufacturer: SANYO   I've discharged it and fully charged it twice already and nothing changed.  Also it can only achieve 4h runtime on battery. All Win updates installed, all Lenovo apps are up to date, newest BIOS.

I've found a similar bug from last year. Same thing, capacity reported was lower than actual. Fix for the issue was to reflash the battery's firmware.Unfortunatelly my battery is not listed for this fix.  EDIT:this battery was made by SANYO. Same problem may occur to anyone having 9-cell SANYO battery (42T4799). Read this thread for more details: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?p=596638

This is the thinkpad t520 combo that is supposed to get you 24 hours of battery life. From my experience it's completely possible providing you don't do much, and keep the screen at lowest brightness (only good for me in dark areas). Fortunately I don't need a full 24 hours of use, so I can run it at full blast(screen brightness still set kinda low though) with my music apps and get 12+ hours. I bought a samsung 470 low power ssd and didn't see much difference in batt-life from the 250gb lowest option harddrive. I've seen some posts about similar problems but nothing with this specific model.  I just recieved my T520 from Lenovo and noticed a significant wobble in the battery (factory 6-cell).  It moves in all directions, effectively pivoting about the center (where the contacts mate). The total range of motion of the battery is about 2-3mm.  By pushing down in on one end of the battery from the back of the laptop, you can make the other end stick out of the laptop's profile by about 1mm.  The system works and the battery is always engaged with the contacts. I've contacted support and I'll probably have someone look at it, but I'd love some feedback.  Is it worth getting support and possibly being out my laptop a few days, or do all T520s have this chacteristic (am I likely to have the same problem after the depot is finished)?

Answer:T520 6-Cell Battery Wobbles/Loose

Eh... I'd stuff a bit of paper in there to reduce the wobble. I'd avoid completely eliminating the wobble because it gives a bit of extra flexibility in case the laptop takes a drop on the battery side.

Hi All, I have a Lenovo ThinkPad T520 with Windows Professional. My laptop's 9 cell battery is just over a year old. A couple of weeks ago it suddenly jumped from the typical ~3hrs of running time on battery power to much less. The problem began with the battery draining at the normal pace to ~80%, then jumping straight to <10% and shutting off soon after. Now it can only run for <1min on the battery. Since this was not a gradual decline, I assume the problem is not with the battery, or at least I would like to try all other possible solutions. I would hate to buy a new battery and have the same problem because, actually, something else all together is causing the issue. I updated to Lenovo Power Manager 6.38, ran all Windows Professional updates, performed a single battery gauge reset (since it's harmful, I won't do it again), and tried JDay's suggestion to select "always fully charge" in the power manager. Nothing seems to have any affect on the performance. I also removed the battery and plugged in the laptop and it operated just fine, proving that the motherboard is operating correctly. I would like to update the battery's firmware to see if that would solve my problem, but the firmware I found (http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS001322) does not include my T520 model. Does anyone know where I may find the appropriate firmware? Any other possible solutions? Thanks!

Answer:T520 Battery Power Sudden Drop

Did You try option of "Perform Reset" in "Batery Maintenance"/ "Battery section"/"Power Manager" software? If there is that option in Your version of Power Manager, U should use it, after checking "Design Capacity", "Full Charge Capacity" and "Remaining Capacity" of course laptop should be wroking without power supply when You want to check that battery infos. In case of no effect - You should contact Lenovos "party-line" (service infoline ).

Hi all, the T520 with Nvidia Optimus technology is supposed to have a battery life between 4-7 hours with a 6-cell battery. My personal experience with my T520 is completely different: The battery life of my T520 is never longer than 2-3 hours (power consumption typically between 14-18 watts when WIFI on, LCD brightness 2-4, using only Firefox or office applications like Word 2010). I already played around with the Lenovo energy manager to find a way to get a better battery performance. After disabling "detect Optimus.. by OS" I saw improvements from 2 to 2,5-3.0 hours. The BIOS setting "Display..." is set to "NVIDIA Optimus".  Do you think I have a hardware issue? Are 4-7 hours really feasible with 6-cells? The motherboard was already fully replaced by a new one due to problems with the external VGA connector (the system crashed after 3-10 minutes when a projector/ external display was connected to the vga output). I would be grateful for any comment! My configuration:- Windows 7, 64- NVIDIA nvs 4200m- BIOS and all system drivers are up to date (including NVIDIA driver) - 500 GB HDD- Display 1600x900- Battery: 6-cell, 56 cycles, maximum capacity 56.62 Wh, date of first use: 4/2011 Thanks, Tobias

Hello,

Im having problems with my laptop. Before booting IDE#1 error occurs and it wont recognise the CD/DVD rom Drive. It wont even read a disc. recently a friend updated the firmware of the hardware and i think that it had the wrong update. Is there any solution to this or will my CD/DVD rom drive still work after this?

Hi, I've been a long time Thinkpad user and am thinking of buying a new one now. I am considering the T520 with a dual core and a quad core. I do have some questions regarding the quad-core: 1) Can I simply disable the discrete graphics on the quad core? I absoutely don't need anything but the integrated graphics. 2) How is battery life of the T520 with the 2720QM processor in comparison to the 2620M ? Thanks,Alex

Answer:T520 2720QM battery life and graphics question

Before you purchase a laptop can you tell us a little bit of what you want to use it for?you can get the T520 with only integrated GPU, also the price of a T520 with quad core CPU sometimes can cost as much as the entry level W520 with the same CPU.

I have a W510 at work and it has a 9-cell battery.  This battery sticks out the back of unit...and it is kind of ugly. I was thinking of getting a T520 for my personal use, I would really like the extra battery life that a 9 cell brings. Does the T520 9-cell battery stick out the rear like the W510?  I see that the new U46 and u56 from ASUS have a 8-cell battery and it is completely enclosed; the machines use the same Sandy Bridge Processor as the T520.

they should use the same battery and have the same case format, so the answer is yes.

I bought a T520 (4240) a few months ago and, like most people around here had the same issues with pulsing fans and, on applying BIOS 1.28, CPU throttling issues. I'm not sure if the latter one is fixed properly yet, but I also have a problem with the battery charging thresholds that has me stumped. I have the 55++ and 27++ 9-cell main and "slice" batteries. For a while I let them charge up to 100% whenever connected to AC, but then I read that a 100% charge level is not recommended for day-to-day operation. I use Fedora 15 Linux 99.9% of the time on my T520. I wanted to set the battery charge thresholds to avoid the 100% charge level, but the "tp_smapi" Linux driver doesn't work for the T520 (yet). I read somewhere that if I were to set the charge thresholds with the Lenovo Power Manager in Windows 7, that they would work in Linux as long as the laptop was not completely powered down when switching from Windows to Linux (i.e., use a warm boot). Well, it worked. In fact it worked really well: I could even power down and remove the batteries and something, somewhere would still remember that I wanted to start charging the slice battery when it dropped below 35% and stop charging it at 80%, even when running Fedora 15. Having used the machine for a few weeks, I found that I used it on battery power a lot and liked to "top up" the batteries over night. The 35/80 thresholds didn't really suit my working pattern. So, back in the Power Manageer in Windows, I changed ... Read more

Answer:T520: Slice battery charging thresholds stuck

A quick update on this: today it seems that the primary battery has also decided that 80% is enough, even though the threshold I set was 88%. This is under Linux, where I believe the embedded controller (EC) enforces the thresholds written to it by Power Manager under Windows. The third post on this page about work on a driver to set battery charge thresholds on Linux mentions that the EC might ignore writes to the battery charge threshold registers if bit 7 (somewhere) is not set. Is Power Manager writing the information to the EC incorrectly? Is that why my charge thresholds appear to be stuck? It worked the first time, but I've updated Power Manager a few times since then and now I cannot change the thresholds.

Drive Region Locked: Yes
Region Setting Status: Not Permanent
Number of User Changes Left: 4
Number Of Manufactor Reset Left: 4
Current Region Code: 1

That test is with no disk in the drive.

Also, I had a blue error screen when it rebooted but it went away as I was trying to write down the info and it auto loaded to desktop.
Is there any possible way I can still backup my files to disk or is the drive shot? Checking google regarding the driver region lock it offered some software to bypass but I don't want to install anything else that could potentially harm the drive further. I purchased this Dell E520 directly from Dell summer 07 and the hardware warranty has since expired. Any feedback is much appreciated. Thanks

Dear all My battery pack (42T4506) has worked well for the last two years. Until last Thursday (13 May 2010), battery lifespan was degraded to 1.5h hours -- which was accetably to me. Last Friday (14 May 2010), when I was sitting in a train trying to restart my laptop, the battery symbol was blinking with message mentioned in the subject above -- and the battery refusing from being active (although 100% loaded). I wonder how such a sudden failure can occur -- IBM's thinkpad battery never failed like that... Would anyone mind me giving the full address of Lenovo support? Thanks Lukas

Does anyone has the file for it, or know where I can get it? Any help will be very appreciated. Thanks!

Answer:Edge 13 Battery Firmware

Hi Mosheke,

Welcome to the community.

As per your concern battery is not charging,  If your battery has much lesser capacity or does not charge at certain level any longer, you may want to perform a gauge reset on the battery.

Double-click the green "Power Manager" battery icon near the Windows' system clock, usually at the lower-right corner of the screen. If you cannot find this icon, click "Start," "All Programs," "Access IBM" and "Power Manager."Click the "Battery Information" tab at the top.Click "Battery Maintenance."Click "Perform Reset," and then click "Continue" on the confirmation dialog box. This procedure will take more time to complete, and you should not use your ThinkPad during that time. You will be prompted when the battery reset is complete.

Note: make sure AC adapter plug in when performing gauge reset.

Afterwards, please check whether the issue get resolved.

Regards,
Sameer

Hi, i had been a bit disappointed by the performance offered of the dedicated GPU/NVidia Optimus. By accident i discovered, the GPU provides MUCH more performance if a battery is plugged in! Let me describe my setup:Thinkpad T520 with a Quadro 4200M (NVidia Optimus setup) and a default 55+ battery, which i normally unplug while on dock. (Yes, the battery management is nice, but temperature increases the battery aging rate, too. My last laptop died before my batteries even reasonable weared out ..., however, back to topic).Docked but WITHOUT battery, i get poor framerates of about less than 30 fps while running a rather simple game on 1024x768px with least possible quality. High quality settings lead to about 10-15 fps.Now the interesting part: Docked and WITH battery, i get 120-130 fps by using the highest quality settings possible. I discovered  this behaviour on each game/benchmark i ran, and noticed the same results, not depending on the battery state while booting (plugged/unplugged). In fact, it can even be observed if i  plug in the battery while running a game/benchmark, the fps increase instantly. But things get even more interesting: If i do not use the dock and connect the AC power supply directly to the laptop itself, nothing described above happens! It just runs smooth and fast like desired, independent from the battery state. So i am curious: If you own the same hardware setup like me (T520 with NVidia Optimus and Mini Dock Seri... Read more

Answer:[T520 + Mini Dock Series 3] NVidia GPU throttled while running docked without battery?

Confirmed.  It's well known and was discussed often when these machines came out.
