Extremely high CPU usage from "system idle process" & "svchost.exe" processes

Question: Extremely high CPU usage from "system idle process" & "svchost.exe" processes

Hi there,
as the titles says, i am having an unusually high usage of cpu from those 2 processes (25-80%) on my quad core 4.3 Ghz processor, which i highly doubt is normal. another weird thing i noticed is that it's periodic, meaning it would be very high during the day, but during the night it's fine! i am afraid my device has been infected with a bitcoin miner or something!
I am using Bitdefender free antivirus, and i also scanned with malewarebytes antimaleware to no avail, so i went ahead and did a FRST scan, here are the results
any input is highly appreciated, thanks a lot.

Preferred Solution: Extremely high CPU usage from "system idle process" & "svchost.exe" processes

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

About a year ago, I noticed that my computer was running slow (both online and off) and that the explorer.exe process listed in the Windows Task Manager was usually running very high. Windows Explorer seemed to crash a lot as well. A few months ago, I attempted to install Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0 on my computer and before the install completed a warning window popped up saying something like 'there is already another instance of Kaspersky running' (which was not the case since this was the first time I had ever attempted to install Kaspersky software) and the install failed. When I rebooted my computer, I got the blue screen of death for a few seconds and then Windows booted with a message saying that Windows had recovered from a serious problem. Since recovering from whatever happened after the failed Kaspersky install, my computer is slower than ever and the Task Manager still shows a high CPU usage even though the System Idle Process is high and there isn't any processes listed that are using much CPU time at all.

I just scanned my system with the latest updated versions of AdAware, Spybot S&D, SuperAntiSpyware, and Avira AntiVir. All of them found nothing. I then cleaned my computer with CCleaner and ran HijackThis.

Here is the log:

After laptop is on for about 5-10 minutes I start getting insane lag doing anything.
Just trying to get screenshots and typing this in is taking 30 minutes.
Hopefully screenshots can explain better.

Answer:System Idle process high cpu usage

You want system idle process to be high. That means the processor is looking for work. 99 is better than 60. What is that 22% process--it is running at 0% on my PC.

Hi, yesterday I had a very bad lag while I'm playing, it was the 1st time to lag like that, it is not due to connection problem as I'm used to them and they are totally different (this one was with sound interruption). After I finished the game i restarted my pc, the restart took ~35 minutes!
The computer became too slow to be used for anything, I opened the task manager to see what is eating my process to find nothing, System idle process is at 99 usage, even when I run a program or try to play a video it stay over 80, I know system idle process means the computer has nothing important to do, and I think this is the problem.
I'm using windows 7 64 bits. My laptop is acer aspire4720 and there is a small green light which lights when it is precessing, after this problem began it is always green.
I had the same problem in the safe mode.
Opened msconfig but did not find anything new in the startup tab.
There is no new windows updates installed (the latest were before two days and the computer was fine).
No new programs installed, only updated skype.
Any suggestions?
As I'm not sure what is the problem I don't know if the title is correct or not.
Sorry for my bad English, it is not my native language.

Hello L_The_Legend & welcome to TSF

Have you scanned your computer for viruses lately?

Also, tap away at F10 as you start the PC to enter the BIOS menu. Under the Advanced or Diagnostic tab you should find the facility to run a test on the Hard Drive and Memory - run both test and post back with the results. Is the system overheating?

Though this topic is quite old, I would like to point out that everyone saying 100% CPU system idle process is normal...is CORRECT. With the task manager list, higher numbers could possibly indicate slower functioning. However, system idle process CPU means something different due to its nature, as others have already explained. This does not make sense to some, and I feel compelled to encourage people to ignore the negative voting scores on these entries; and kindly overlook system idle when searching for explanations of slow computers or programs. System Idle Process is not the culprit.

Hey all. So I upgraded to 8.1 from 7 and I faced this issue where I have the same exact programs opened that I had back on windows 7, but now they are generating alot more CPU usage. I can't find any solution to this, other than installing 7. That fixes
it. On win 7 with the same exact enviroment (same programs opened, same page on google chrome opened, same exact everything) I get 1-4% cpu usage which is great. On win 8.1 however, with again everything the same, I get 18-30% cpu usage.
And it's all caused by windows' processes and stuff. Can't really shut them down because things won't work then.
I kinda like win 8.1 so I don't wanna go back to 7, but since my performance is crippled, I might have to. Any suggestions are much appreciated! I've tried some things that I found on the internet, but nothing seems to fix it.

A friend of mine has the same mobo and cpu as me, but when I did a test and created the same exact enviroment as on my pc, the usage doesn't go above 5% when idle.
I dunno what to do at this point.
Here's some screenshots of my task manager:
http://i.imgur.com/K3le1cX.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/x0qxCaw.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/FfV6ZBH.jpg
On this last one you can notice that there's a misterious difference between the user cpu usage and the overall, idk what causes that.
I tried doing clean install and have absolutely nothing installed and it still stays at around 15%

Hi,
Its my first post here. Greetings to everybody.

I run a Windows XP SP3 based system with all updates and latest drivers installed, and the software maintained for optimal performance (stuff like a clean and defragged registry, defragged file system, minimal background processes and disabling of non-essential windows services, no malware/spyware, absence of junk files, etc etc). The hardware config consists of an Core2Duo E6750 CPU, Corsair XMS2 2GB memory, Gigabyte X-38 DS5 motherboard, Gigabyte 8800GT based GPU and a Seagate 320GB HDD.

Since a past few days, I've been noticing abnormally high CPU usage under idle conditions. The processes "System Idle Process" and "System" occupy anywhere from 40% to 70% CPU usage. I have the Enhanced Halt (C1E), Thermal monitor 2 and Enhanced Intel Speedstep Technology enabled in the BIOS - in case this information is relevant. Hardware Interrupts, Deferred Procedure Calls under System Idle Process seem to take up cpu cycles for most of the time, possibly indicating a driver bug. I have not installed/removed any software, hardware, nor updated any device drivers which would lead to such a problem suddenly. Normal workloads are not affected, however stuff like playing video with PowerDVD 10 and running the Milkdrop Visualization are badly throttled.

Please Advice.

Answer:Abnormally high CPU usage by System Idle Process

I'll think on your problem for a while, but I wanted to comment that Milkdrop is the best visualization software ever, and it can definitely take its toll on any processor or gfx card lol. Are any of your processes using more resources than normal? It would appear you have a firm grasp on what is usually running on your system, so is anything out of the ordinary?

Ideally though, the "System Idle process" should be as high as possible, as that is where your excess cycles are going. So, the higher the number, the less resources your usual operations are using (so 99% idle process means 1% in use) (Also, that is my understanding of it, if I am incorrect in this assumption, somebody please correct me, I have not really ever thought about that process before).

I don't think your bios settings will interfere with that, but I could be wrong, again somebody correct me if I am wrong (making another assumption).

Are you using a laptop? Sometimes slower processing can mean the battery is going bad (Though not always)

Try running some form of monitor to find out if your processor is running up to par (cpu-z works alright for quick checks). But I think it is probably something else. Gfx card going bad or underclocked perhaps?

I am not really sure what could be causing it, you seem to sound like you already checked for abnormally running processes, so I am at a bit of a loss. Perhaps it could be hard drive slowing down or something? I am sure MoM will come in here and cor... Read more

So I have a fresh install of Win8.1 LEGAL copy (it's about 2 weeks old)

I noticed yesterday abnormally high CPU usage. ~40% in task manager when the computer is doing nothing.

After some investigation, most google searches are telling me it's a driver issue, run a trace this or that. It looks like the process is simply "SYSTEM".

Okay -- so a few more details. When I do a fresh reboot, the issue doesn't exist. Super low CPU usage 1 to 3%. Wifi works, everything is working as it should. If I don't do anything, i.e just let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes, CPU usage will spike to 70%, soon as I move the mouse it will fall down to 50% then to 40's. Another byproduct of this problem, is when I do a restart or shutdown, it will go to the restart screen with the rotating circle thing and sit there, not a hard crash, but will just sit there spinning forever. (I'm forced to do a hard reboot). This issue does NOT happen if I reboot in the first few minutes of starting windows, before this unknown process/thread takes root. Did a full virus scan, and malwear scan, even uninstalled Acronis.

I've disabled my wifi adapter, all the normal programs I use (dropbox, evernote, afterburner). Just reinstalled the latest video drivers.

Still confused as to why this is going on. I've used process explorer to poke around but still can't get to the root of what's causing it. There doesn't seem to be detailed instructions I could find... Read more

Okay, this is driving me crazy. Whenever my PC is left idle for some time, CPU usage by "System" will ramp up. I have no idea what is causing it. I had thought that there was something in Task Scheduler that would run itself whenever my system was left alone, but there is nothing of the sort. I've also tried using Process Explorer to get a more in-depth look at what the heck "System" is, but it's as equally vague as what Task Manager is telling me.

Has anyone run into this?

I've posted a thread regarding this a month ago here. I had scanned my PC with Malware bytes and turns out I had 4 malwares. Rebooted it and figured it was the end of it. The thing is this happens occasionally when I'm normally browsing Chrome, the memory usage goes up to 3,89GB out of 4GB out of nowhere. I go to the task manager/resource monitor and I can't find anything relevant I wouldn't normally have. Sure I have about 70 tasks but they're all small and shouldn't be causing trouble. Today it happened while I was installing Sniper Elite v2 - lengthy installation, it was using my whole RAM understandably, yet after it was finished I'm still left with about 80% of memory usage? Please help.

So, basically I upgraded to Windows 10, and it's been a huge nightmare.

To start with, I didn't enjoy the experience and tried to downgrade, but I was informed the backup was corrupted (it was using a different file structure or something) and was incompatible. So... no backup even though I could clearly SEE the backup.

An external backup did not work either, for some reason, still giving an issue with file structure and formatting (particularly "Windows can not be installed onto X file structure, reformat to NTFS" which I'd done five times, reformatting both full and quick, so who knows)

Now that I've accepted that I'm going to be dealing with this operating system now, I have some actual issues to work through. Number one being that, for whatever reason, if I'm running Chrome (or another browser), the computer slows to a halt.
Service Host: DCOM usually takes 15-50(!)% CPU with any kind of active internet running. This is just silly. I currently have 9 tabs open, (mostly text pages, not graphics pages), and am running around 20% CPU from Service Host: DCOM Server Process Launcher. It would be great if under that header, it explained WHAT was using so much CPU, but it doesn't (and drop down menus across the task manager don't show this anyway).

This does however, seemingly, cause Cortana (for example) to take 5-15 seconds to open up (when service host was at 55% it took cortana 5.5 minutes to open.), and the start menu will also take a while to open.

Lately, I've been getting alerts about high cpu usage. Checking Process Explorer, I see that spoolsv.exe is using about 49-50% and Systems Idle is using 45-50. I have no idea why this is happening. Only recent change has been the swapping out of a HP Photosmart printer for a Lexmark Pro 915 printer.

Answer:High CPU usage from spoolsv.exe and Systems Idle Process?

System Idle Process is not using anything, shows % of idle time, higher number = less processor use. At least 1 less thing to worry about.

Hi everyone, I'm having quite a hard time solving a problem that I have been having with an svchost process in Windows Vista (I've got service pack 2).

The main reason that I noticed this spike in cpu usage was because while playing games on the computer, I would get massive fps drops every 10-15 seconds. These fps drops seemed to occur whenever the specific svchost process spiked from 0% cpu usage to 30%. After monitoring the process for a little while using process explorer I was able to find out some info about it.

Here's a pic of the CPU usage in process explorer:

Also, using the graph feature you can see how it spikes up and down every few seconds:

The svchost in question has the services "DCOM Server Process Launcher" and "Plug and Play" under it. The following is what is shown when highlighting the svchost process and also the command line shown for each of them in the services tab:

After researching for solutions online, it seems as though there are quite a lot of other people experiencing this problem. One solution that some people talked about online was to go into the sound options, right click your specific device and go to properties. From there go into enhancements tab and check "disable all enhancements". Supposedly this would cause the dcom service from constantly checking hardware every few seconds, but doing this did not fix my problem and the process keeps spiking to 30% every few seconds ... Right click on the svchost.exe process and select the Threads tab. See if there's an entry with high Cycles Delta and let us know the Start Address

Then, in the Process Explorer main window there should be a couple of entries that are "children" to it (on my system it's unsecapp.exe and WmiPrvSE.exe). Right click on them and check their Threads tabs for the same info.

Hi Experts,
I have encountered a very high memory usage in one svchost.exe process on my win 7 64-bit. Attached screen shots of process associated with it. Some times it goes up about 300Mb too.

I have tried several suggestions already available for this issue. But No luck .
I've tried by updating Windows (ref), scanning PC by TREND officescan.
Also when I tried with only with Microsoft Services using Selective Startup option in msconfig as suggested here, issue remains same. (With that can I conclude that it is related with malware?)

Also need to note that the WLAN AutoConfig service (wlansvc) associated with that svchost.exe make sense as I've encountered some problem uninstalling wireless router software.I feel that that has not been properly uninstalled. But I dont have any idea how to check/or rectify it.

HJT log is also attached.

i have a Dell 6400, running XP with SP3, which has been rock solid for 5 years even when running heavy load apps. Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) appeared about 3 months ago, and has been repeating almost daily since, and my sound is skippy/crappy.- system idle process is always high, typically 50-97% of CPU load, which is understandable if there are no other apps active HOWEVER when I intentionally open multiple heavy apps such as Photoshop, Maximizer and MS Access in quick succession, and the CPU use spikes to 90-95% capacity (as expected), system idle process still hogs the vast majority of the CPU use and leaves maybe 10-20% for all the other apps.- i opened my task manager and listened to a MP3 file. System idle process was always high (as per above) and the sound 'skipping' increased proportionally with CPU load, which was being hogged by the system idle process- i downloaded and ran the MS SDK debug program on the BSOD mini-dump file. This revealed ... "unable to load image ntoskrnl.exe", "Unable to load image portcls.sys", and "Unable to load image sthda.sys" Since the latter 2 are audio related I uninstalled my audio driver and re-installed the latest version- i updated my Bios to the latest version- i ran chkdsk and it was error free- my system is virus free - i run Norton scans frequently I've spent a couple of days googling to solve this. Hello,
I've run into a problem that I can't seem to diagnose; unsure whether it us malware related or not.
I'm running windows 7 home professional 64 bit. 8 gigs of ram.
Very recently, as in within the last couple days, applications have begun to hang and crash. Upon investigation, I found that one of the svchost.exe files is chewing up a huge amount of memory. The process usually sits between 15 to 25 percent cpu usage, but can spike up to 50 to 80; meanwhile the memory usage continues to rise. Eventually, the process closes (I think) and it causes a system restart.
I have a little experience dealing with computer infections, so I tried to do some investigating on my own initially (I know you guys don't like to hear that, sorry). Anyway, the specific svchost.exe that is seemingly causing problems was managing the Power service, the Plugplay service, and DCOMlaunch service. I split them up to try to identify the problem and it's the one managing DCOMlaunch. I looked at the threads in process explorer and, while I don't fully understand what they mean, it seems that there are several threads related to msvct.dll and ntoskml.exe.
I've done what I usually do when I run into problems; I ran MBAM, MBAR, and I did a scan with ESET, I did a scan with my regular antivirus Avira, but everything is coming up totally clean, so I'm stumped.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, this problem started several months ago. 1-3 times a day, I would notice a lot of hard disk seek activity when I didn't have programs open, nor were any maintenance/virus programs running in the background. Eventually, I noticed that while this was happening, my programs would open and run much more slowly, browser tabs would take forever to switch back and forth between, etc. It seemed the whole system was being tied up, and the HD would be read/writing like crazy.

I d-loaded process explorer a couple weeks ago, and also installed a trial version of Norton Antivirus. I found a suspicious svchost.exe process that on occasion will jump up to as much as 25% CPU usage and be using 1-1.5 GB of memory. Norton AV also reports to me that it is blocking certain activities of svchost.exe. I have posted a shot from process explorer below:

The auto-start location is: HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\nsi. I can't say for certain this is what's causing the system slowdown, but when it does happen, this process will usually be the only thing using more than 1% of the CPU. I ran a full scan with Norton, and it did find several spyware/virus items the first time, all of which it supposedly "fixed". When I ran it a 2nd and 3rd time, it came up with nothing, but the problem persists. Can anyone help me with this? thanks,

-Shannon

Like what I said above this virus infects processes with high CPU usage even if they are not meant to be.

It also creates multiple random letter processes with .exe files like rtqwb.exe or winltfr.exe which causes lag, and if I delete or end the task it just comes up with another file/process.

Please help me.

Thanks.

I Noticed that my CPU usage alarm flashes up alot.I also noticed that my system idle processes are bordrering around 80 -90 processes consistently. Is this normal, if not how do I 'edit'and trim down the system idle processes. If not, are there hidden processes that can be revealed, to explain my unusually high CPU usage in simple processes?

Answer:high number of system idle processes.

e system idle process is what is refered to as a sentinal process. It basically gives the CPU something to do when it does not have any other processes scheduled (this allows nicer code in the scheduler, since it does not have to have special cases when there are no runable/ready processes). Also, this process can be useful from an OS cleanup point of view (looks for deadlocks, etc.)It runs at the lowest priority, and so will get cycles when nothing else is requesting CPU attention. So if you are not doing anything, then it is perfectly normal for it to have high CPU usage.

Answer:System Idle Process Very High

You did not allow MGTools to run to completion. But based on the logs you provided, you do not have a malware issue.

System Idle process is exactly that....so if you are not doing anything, that process will be the largest. This is exactly how it should be.

Now I want you to do one thing. Please move ComboFix to your desktop ( NOTE: DO Not run it!!! )
It should not be here:
c:\users\jim\Downloads\ComboFix.exe
Otherwise it will not uninstall properly.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real-time protection. They are useful as backup scanners. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)

Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
"%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u

Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.

Hello, So I was copying a large group of files (400 gigs) to an external drive, it was about 150 gigs in when the PC crashed ( i believe due to MSI usb speed up), i've since removed the MSI program but CPU usage stays at 100% from the moment the PC turns on, however system idle process shows it's using most everything which is good, and PC perfomance is normal and unlike if CPU usage was actually 100%, but I can't figure out how to fix this, any suggestions or tips would be so helpful, I've attached screen shots showing 100% usage but every program running doesn't add up to near that and system idle showing everything mostly idle. Thanks!!!!!

Rightly so as I believe System Idle process is vital to the stability of Windows from my research. What I would like to know is, is there anyway of returning this process to using a lower amount of CPU as my laptop is really not functioning as quick as it should be.Also task manager reports to be running 94 processes! For some reason the system idle process is showing up in the CPU usage graph in task manager on Windows XP. Which means it always looks to be running at near maximum. So far the only way for me to fix it is to try restarting. Is there any other way?

Answer:System Idle Process showing in CPU usage

It is normal and good for the "System Idle Process" to show high CPU usage. This isn't a real process but more like a placeholder that shows the percentage of unused CPU time.

Alright, you're going to say..."It is suppose to be 100% on System Idle Process, your processor has to be running always so it moves to the System Idle Process."

That isn't the problem. My computer is giving 100% CPU usage on anything possible. It will switch to random programs..which I will end-task, then it will move to another one. It is doing it right now. But, I have end-tasked a lot of programs that it finally immigrated to the System Idle Process. I have a picture to prove to you.

This only happens some times. How I would fix it before..is...Unplug my power cord and let my computer sit for a while..then plug it back in..and it would work some times. But, now I have tried and can't fix it.

Lately, after the fact of this 100% CPU fiasco that started a couple months ago, my computer won't have a POST beep when I start it up. But, if I turn it off, and turn it back on, it will always work on the second time. IT's weird

I have AVG 8 and Spybot Search-and-Destroy, and i do scans with them very often...They either find one or two things...and I clean them up, or I find nothing. Nothing changes this fact.

Not only that, my computer, when it IS working...some-what. (No 100% CPU on random processes) I can't even play Hi-def videos on Youtube or Hulu. I can't even watch movies in 720 P on my computer. And I KNOW my computer is good enough to.

It has just been going down hill for my computer, I don't know what's up. Here... Read more

Hello,

I know it sounds a little bit strange, but:

When I open Task manager ->show process from all users, I notice that System Idle is uses about 95% of CPU.
But the overall cpu usage is lower than 20-30%. How is that possible? (windows 7)

Also, I have 2 os installed on the same computer. 7 and XP.
Windows XP 50%CPU load.-> Disable automatic updates=> Low CPU usage.
If I disable auto updating feature in Windows 7 too, and update it "on demand" weekly would that solve the issue?

Thank you in advance.

Answer:High System Idle CPU, but overall, low cpu usage

the easiest way to remove any resource hogs is to:
click start;
type run;
in run type msconfig;
hit enter;
click the startup tab;
untick everything non essential;
personally I untick everything (youd want to keep your virus scanner though)

I have noticed that whenever my computer is idle, i have no programs running whatsoever, the cpu usage is still at least at 10%. When I go to the task manager, it shows that the System process is taking up 9-11% of the cpu, but whenever I disable my LAN connection, my cpu usage goes back to normal. What about my LAN connection could be making it take up more cpu than it has to? or is it necessary? I used to be connected to the internet through my university's T1 connection, but now i connect through another computer in the apartment through a switch. I am currently running Windows XP. Could somebody please enlighten me as to what could be going on here? Let me know if you need any additional information . . .

Answer:System Process takes up suspiciously high cpu when idle

It sounds to me as though the device your connecting to is just checking the connection to your PC to make sure it is still alive.
If you think you have a Trojan or something, get a trojan scanner (www.google.com) and scan your PC.

Also, what OS are you using? It could have alot to do with it, also; your personal settings could be playing a roll. It just depends on how you have your PC configured and the components running.

Hi, a few days ago I guess I downloaded something that has since caused my computer to do the following: 1) random slowdowns, 2) outgoing connections to random IP addresses (found by MalwareBytes), 3) run a svchost process with significant memory usage (250,000 K and higher) 4) there's a strange process running: 3856804458:2513771802.exe. Occasionally, I have also had my search results or webtraffic re-directed.

I'm running Windows XP SP 3, Mozilla Firefox 7.0.1, and I've attached the DDS logs and GMER scripts described in the preparation guide. While running GMER, the program would quit suddenly after running the scan. There was a slight delay before it did so, but I was barely able to save the log. The first time I ran gmer.exe, I crashed to a BSOD saying "Page fault in non-paged area." Not sure if that last part's related or bad luck.

I've since downloaded, updated, and run: Spybot, MalwareBytes, Immunet, and AVGFree 2012. They all found several items, but no solution. MalwareBytes is routinely block IP outgoing IP address, but when I try to actually run it, it says I have the incorrect "device, path, or file."

Any help you fine folks can give me would be very appreciated!
Thanks,

Guys I need some guidance hunting the cause of high System Interrupts level on a freshly-installed notebook. This is a hp g4-1117dx, with amd llano/hudson, A4-3300m, 4gb, crucial ssd, etc. no external devices used at all.

at idle i have an unacceptably high level of system interrupts, around ~30% cpu utilization. I've checked drivers carefully, but as you know, just because its recent and sourced right is no guarantee of success :cry
I've tried disabling all USB hubs via Device Manager, no change whatsoever.
tried disabling and uninstalling WIFI, NIC, GPU... none of that had any noticable effect. tried uninstalling and reinstalling the IDT audio device. no effect.

I have never used Process Explorer 'til now so I dont' know what I'm doing with it. it shows the general problem but drilling down I can't find the item that is sourcing this flurry - but then I have no idea how to do so properly. I read about xperf but it looks more complicated. I have pretty decent skills so not afraid to give it a go but wanted some advice

I'm attaching one of my shots. this is pretty much the story despite many attempts

thanks

Hello,

Since the past 3-4 days the process called 'System' has been constantly using approximately 35% of my CPU. The usage is pretty much constant all the time. Below you can find screenshots from task manager, resource monitor and process explorer.
In the past I've never seen this, leaving the PC idle dropped the usage down to almost zero, now the CPU is running at full clock 24/7, heating it up ~55C, which is mildly undesirable.

Attempts done so far to fix the issue, none has worked:
- Waiting. I leave the PC to run overnight, but it does not seem to help it.
- Restarting, done multiple times, no effect whatsoever.
- sfc /scannow, nothing found.
- Full virus scan, nothing found.
- The update settings has been set already to not to receive from other pc's. All updates are installed what windows update has to offer.

After running my PC for a few hours, I often run into problems with CPU Usage. The "System" process will spike up once every few minutes once it gets going. This causes the screen and the audio on the PC to freeze momentarily. It will make a loud buzzing sound, because the audio freezes. It will recover after that, until the next spike. This makes watching videos/playing games pretty irritating.

I find that rebooting my PC usually pushes back the issue a first hours for whatever reason.

I'll give any information that is needed.

Answer:'System' process high CPU usage

Hi, you'll need to do some analysis e.g.
High CPU utilization by process

You can also try a process of elimination - does this happen after a clean boot/in safe mode?
If you can find a situation when it does not occur you may be able to work from there.

Hi, I recently got one of my company's old PC's, and HP d530 with XP Prof (& i installed SP 3). Here's a summary of the things i've done since getting it last week: IE 8, AVG 2012 Free, Zone Alarm free firewall, Open Office 3, Firefox, all the windows updates available, Java, 7-Zip, Adobe Flash, Adobe Reader X. I also ran CCleaner as part of my attempt to solve the problems described below.

There have been a couple issues that i've seemingly fixed, such as it asking me to reactivate XP (good thing the sticker with the key is still on the tower), AVG not recognizing the license (or something similar... had to reinstall). There are also 21 updates that keep failing to install for some reason. I've also tried the "patches" that are supposed to fix the common svchost.exe usage problem (WindowsXP-KB927891-v3-x86-ENU, & windowsupdateagent30-x86), but i get an error message telling me they're unnecessary b/c my current SP is more recent.

The main issue at this point is frequent freezes, seeming coinciding with svchost.exe using the majority, if not all, of my CPU Usage capacity, usually when I'm using either Firefox or IE. The first thing to freeze up is always bottom taskbar & start menu. I can usually still type things in my browser, open desktop folders, etc for a little while when this happens, but when i drag my cursor over the taskbar, i just see an "i-beam" cursor... can't actually select anything ... I've noticed that a lot of the time the 'NT Kernal & System' process in the Task Manager goes on overdrive. It always happens when my Internet connection cuts out. It must be related because normally it's on (or close to) 0%. I then have to restart the PC sometimes every 10 - 15 minutes (unless I'm not using the Internet). It's driving me mad.
I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate, 8GB RAM, 500GB HDD. This problem has been going on for over a week now and I've tried all kinds of things.... uninstall/reinstall my Network card, update my Network card driver, virus/spyware/adware/malware scans, reinstalled Windows 7 (as an upgrade so I keep my files and programs. I'm stuck to just restarting my PC. I don't know what's causing it or how to fix it.

Every three to five minutes the computer bogs down, task manager shows the System process at over 95 CPU, the other 5 CPU swapping between the other processes running, but the amount of free RAM stays at around 60%, about 300MB. The PF Usage barely goes above 200MB even when it's bogging down. This happens even when nothing is going on, all programs are shut down, and the busy light on the front of the tower won't even flicker, nor do I hear the usual 'thinking' sounds a computer makes when it given to much to compute. Then occasionally I get a stroke of good luck and the computer runs perfectly for awhile. A friend told me it might be inadequate RAM for XP so I have minimized XP appearances to basic, everything geared for the best performance, I have restored my HDD, erased my HDD, defragged my HDD, and am about to blow up my HDD. I use Advanced System Care, SmartRAM, HijackThis, CCleaner, and TrendMicro Online Scan religiously, but other than some tracking cookies, nothing comes up. I really need a fully working computer in a very short amount of time so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi everyone,
in Task Manager, the "System" sometimes starts eating 14~20% CPU and that persists until a reboot.
"System interrupts" (which is a pseudo process?) seems to do the same.

It doesn't happen from boot, and I don't know what triggers it.

Google searches suggest a driver may be buggy.

But which one?

How can I find it out?

Could I debug the system process using a tool to see what function a thread is in, for example? Somehow?

thanks

Hi All--

I've got an unusual high CPU issue issue I can't seem to pinpoint. I'm hoping someone has some additional ideas. This problem happens every couple days. The only way to resolve is to reboot (not that big a deal but still annoying). When it occurs the SYSTEM process uses an entire core (25% of CPU). I've tried stopping all software and services that I can but the problem still occurs.

I've scanned my computer for viruses, spyware, etc. I use Microsoft Security Essentials, Spybot, and HijackThis!. I even downloading and scanned my computer with Sophos Anti-Rootkit. All of them turn up nothing!

My PC is a MSI laptop running Windows 7 Home Edition 64 Bit.

Windows Update is current. My drivers are current but it doesn't appear to be a driver issue (IMO).

Any thoughts? Any steps I could take to dig further? Anything?

Answer:Intermittent high CPU usage by SYSTEM process

That is the NT Kernel that is causing the spike. That is a essential part of Windows. It is what drives Windows. While yes yours is high, it is also something that is mandatory to run the system. So either you got a nasty rootkit installed that isnt being detected or your system is corrupted by something else.

Have you run the scans in Safe Mode?

I've got a Port?g? Z930.
A process called "System" appears on the task manager when I unplug the PC from the AC.

I'd like to know why is it using high CPU (from 9% to 18%) and keeping my temps above 70?C.
It's very annoying, not only because of the temperature that hits the PC itself, but also because of the battery life, that can't go above 1 hour and 30 min because of this process.

It's not a virus, already CHECKED, don't ask.
Also, I don't know when it started or why, so please don't ask.

Thanks in advance,

This problem began yesterday. I noticed my CPU was at 90C constantly with very high CPU usage (>50%). I had no major programs running. I rebooted several times and the program persisted.

1. I went into safe mode and everything was normal. So this rules out hardware issues.
2. I reformatted and everything was normal..but then after installing these few programs, the problem began again.

Hello. First off, having utorrent effectively craps you out on this forum since it has a bad rep. Suggest you remove it and come back, start a new thread. That said, if you're familiar with Task Manager, check the CPU percentage on the processes tab (click CPU column to sort). This may help pinpoint which app(s) are whack.

When I don't touch my computer for a while, I get CPU 100% (or CPU 50% on this dual core). As soon as I touch the mouse, in one second the culprit escapes. I know it's something under svchost.exe and I know I could see which svchost with Process Explorer or Svchost Viewer. But since the whole process disappears as soon as I touch mouse, it's pretty difficult to pinpoint. Svchost Viewer doesn't list all the processes in one screen, scrolling is needed. So it's basically always hidden and I can't scroll to it as that kills the process.

How do I find out what exact process inside svchost.exe is eating my CPU during idle? My goal is to prevent the offending process altogether from starting.

By the way, which settings of Windows Defender can cause this CPU 100% on idle problem, I didn't yet try shutting down all the settings there.

I've owned this i7 X220T for about 3-4 months now and even from the get-go it ran pretty hot (refused to go below 45C on idle when I was outside in 30F weather) but now the idle temps are getting to levels that border on unsafe! I'm currently at 71-75C idle and all I have running on my computer is Firefox and Speccy. Would contacting a Lenovo tech and getting him to replace the TIM help significantly??? I know these chips are known to run hot, but there is no way anything was ever designed to run at 70C idle... I have thoroughly cleaned the exhaust ports on this unit (although at 3-4 months old it shouldn't have a dust problem anyway) and run it with the battery inserted + AC power on the "balanced" setting, meaning the chip isn't overclocking itself at all. ::edit::Also, I forgot to mention that it is normally resting on my hardwood computer desk that is practically dust free and it has plenty of room for air to vent.

My problem:

I got the XP Security 2012 virus the other day and went through a process to fix it found here. http://deletemalware.blogspot.com/2011/06/remove-xp-antispyware-2012-xp-internet.html

I removed the virus using those steps and also used Malware and STOPZilla to remove any/all spyware/malware but now I have the following problems:

A PC that sits at 50-55% CPU usage while idling. I went to task manager and sorted by processes and the only thing running is System Idle Process at 98% or so. There are no apparent services running that are using up the CPU
Restarting takes several minutes (used to take 15 secs max) and is slower to shutdown than it is to start up.

When my computer sleeps after shutting the lid, it does not awake when i open the screen nor when i press the power button to awake it.

Hey there. My name is Josh and I hope you guys can help me.

For some reason or another, my computer will randomly slow down and start eating away at my disk and cpu.
I can't pinpoint a particular program that causes it, but I'm usually running Firefox when it happens (I almost always have Firefox open) although it's happened even when Firefox isn't running.
When I check my Task Manger/Resource Monitor it shows a constant 99% CPU usage, but combined the programs only show using up to 3% of the CPU (Not counting System Idle Process of course)
The slowdown stutters back and forth, so sometimes I can move the mouse and click, but then 5 seconds later it's frozen up again.
During this time, Resource Monitor shows spiking Disk usage on my HDD and it's always (when it's there at all) from pagefile.sys.
It has some read I/O activity that's usually below 40,000 B/min, but the write I/O activity can regularly show between 50,000,000 and 100,000,000 B/min.

Hi,

I just bought my brand new laptop and have loaded Vista Ultimate 32bit onto it for about 5 days. I noticed something unusual about Vista's CPU usage while idle in the task manager as well as the Resource monitor.

I have attached two pictures to show my problem. Notice that my CPU usage is always at about 40-60% on both of my cores. However, the average CPU usage per process shows that it should actually occupy about 15% to at most 20% (by adding up all the highest average CPU for processes in the first picture). The second picture I attached shows the current CPU usage sorted by max usage, and again it does not add up to 41%!

Although at 40-60% usage, I do not notice any major performance impacts, as both cores are not loaded to the max. However, I do notice Vista chewing up more battery than needed when I have my laptop running off batteries. Because the max frequency for the processor would always need to be raised to around 60% even when idle (instead of say... 10-20%).

I have searched online for various problems relating to high CPU usage, and most of the responses are about tracing down which process is the culprit. Well, this is where I'm stumped because it all does not add up! According to the process view, everything is normal but my system resources are still get constantly chewed up by something invisible it seems.

Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated at this point!

Answer:Vista Ultimate 32: high CPU usage does not correspond with process usage

Posting two more image to show this problem from the task manager...

Notice that the system idle process is 84, and yet CPU usage is 42? I always thought that:
CPU usage + idle process = 100?

Perhaps things are done differently with dual core processors? This is my first dual core so I'm not sure. The second image shows how both my cores are being used roughly equally, at around 50%.

This is freaking driving me crazy. This is the SECOND Windows 7 system I've had this issue on and it completely cripples the computer.

Basically, whenever I downloaded anything, be it via uTorrent, Firebox, even speed tests, my CPU usage goes to 100% and nothing responded until the download it stopped or it finished on it's own.

Both computers lasted about a month before this started, both computers were TOTALLY different hardware. In fact one was a laptop and one was a desktop. Then just one day, poof, 100% cpu when downloading.

I've tested all types of downloads as mentioned above, uTorrent, speed tests, general file downloading, Windows updates, anything that causes bandwidth usage makes the process "System" sky rocket to 100%.

I've tried the normal things. Updating AV software, full system scan. Updated and ran Malwarebytes and ran a full scan. Ran defrag, ran check disc. I've posted HiJackThis logs else where, no ones sees anything out of the norm...

Now if I just format the problems solved for about a month or so then it will just come right back.

This only seems to happen to me with Windows 7. The laptop did it 3 times, each time I got about a month into the Windows 7 install and finally I went back to Windows XP on the laptop, problem solved.

Now my new desktop is running W7, month or so into the install SAME EXACT problem.

PLEASE can anyone tell me anything I haven't thought to try? I don't want to run an OS that requires 12 fresh installs a year.

Answer:High CPU usage by process "System" when downloading

It would be very difficult to know what the problem is precisely, but I would suspect that the problem is caused by some program that you commonly use (not PE), that is related to internet activity, or more specifically downloading. I would create a list of such programs, disable them all, and see what happens. If the downloads can then be performed normally, reinable each of those programs, one by one, until the culprit is found.

So lately, I've noticed an immense amount of CPU usage when my PC is idle. This happened very suddenly and after some research I've found the two culpurets! PlugPlay and AudioEndPointBuilder. Since this is more of a Windows 7 problem than anything, I'm worried that if I try to stop either of those 2 proccesses something can really go wrong. I actualy tried the "stop process" option but both Process would keep running normally. I'm pretty sure that it's not a virus/malware problem. At this point I'm not sure as to what I can do more.

I am having system performance issues on my desktop machine. I have traced the cause to one of the instances of svchost.exe, which is typically taking more than 80% of the CPU and frequently up to 100%. I have a process monitor app (System Explorer) which shows that when this problem occurs, the instance of svchose.exe that is causing the problem invariably is hosting two executables that are part of the Windows Mouse & Keyboard Center. As shown by the process monitor, the relevant fragment of the process tree is as shown below:

svchost.exe -k netsvcs
taskeng.exe { very long alpanumeric string. A class ID?}
ipoint.exe
itype.exe
The excessive CPU load is attributed the svchost.exe. The "children" typically show zero load.

I also have a laptop, and when I examine the process tree on that machine, I also find the same svchost.exe as the parent of the same children, but the CPU loading on that machine shows zero CPU load for the entire stack, except for times when I am moving the mouse around, when ipoint.exe shows a few flashes of non-zero load (typically 0.1%, which is neglibible).

So, something is clearly amiss on the desktop. The question is what, and what can be done to remedy the problem?

Just got a new laptop... HP G62-224CA

Athlon II P920 2.1GHz
3GB DDR3-1066
Integrated Radeon HD 4250
Windows 7 Ultimate

So, my problem is, I was going to install Norton Internet Security, but something urgent (non-computer related) came up and I left the PC connected to the Internet. Came back later and installed Norton. But a little while later the Task Manager showed the CPU usage at around 40%, with the "System" process taking up the majority of that. That's pretty much all the info I can give; sorry if it's not a lot to work on. What are some possible causes of this problem? Since I got this computer and don't have anything worth backing up, would it be worth it to do a complete system reinstall, or would this be a fairly easy problem to tackle?

Hi -

Nice to see you in these parts, but of course not under these circumstances.

I would remove NIS/ N360 and see if CPU calms down.

NIS/ N360 removal --> http://jcgriff2.com/NRT_N360_Removal.html

Per link at end, try MSE.

Hi

I have an issue with my CPU where CPU1 will stay at 60-100 % work rate when idle, and CPU2 is staying at around 20-60%. The rest are staying low at around 0-10% with a few minor spikes here and there.

I have unparked all my cores to try and get the latter ones to take some of the work away from number 1 and 2, but it doesn't seem to help much. I'm wondering what could be causing this. Im gonna give you a picture showing how this doesnt add up from my point of view, and i'll write my specs down.

Fyi my main problem is when i try to run games like Arma 3 (which has pretty horrible single threaded CPU usage as i understand it) and it doesnt have any juice to work with as it's only using my already overworked CPU1 and maybe a bit of CPU2.

Another odd thing to note is that the game runs smooth sometimes, and other times the FPS is so low when i enter the game and throughout the game that it's basically unplayable.

Specs:
- Intel Core i7-2600K CPU @3.40GHz
- 16 GB ram, 1600mhz
- 2x AMD Radeon HD 6900 crossfired
- 800W Cooler Master silent pro gold
64 bit windows

Answer:High (idle) CPU usage

First....I see you are using MSI afterburner, turn that off and see what happens. Next...I see you have and AMD 6900 series GPU and you're running the Crimson driver package for it (is that the BETA driver)....not possible as those 4xxx, 5xxx and 6xxx series GPU have been labeled as Legacy cards and no further support is available and the last known driver for them is the 15.7.1 package. That might be your issue right there.

I'd start off with turning off AfterBurner and then installing the correct GPU driver and then check your results.

Hey guys, recently my W10 PC seems to be using a fair bit of CPU. I noticed this because my Battlefield 1 fps appeared to have dropped. First thing I did was roll back my nvidia drivers to the previous version, but then I noticed my cpu usage. I seem to be using 35-45% cpu usage at idle. I've never seen it go below 35% (In safe mode its around 2-3%).

Things i've tried:
- Sfc scannow at boot (it found & fixed a few things)
- chkdsk /f at boot

Hopefully someone will be able to point me in the right direction!

Hi, wsappax is related to Store apps (universal apps).

I'm wondering why explorer is using so much CPU time.

System and Compressed memory should normally be using negligible CPU time.

Presumably Defender (Antimalware) is active 'cos of other activity.

2-3% CPU use in Safe Mode is high... can you post a screenshot of your task manager in Safe Mode?

wsappax:
If you expand the selection, one, two or even three Windows services are listed: Windows Store Service (WSService), Client License Service (ClipSVC) and AppX Deployment Service (AppXSVC).

AppX Deployment Service (AppXSVC)
Provides infrastructure support for deploying Store applications. This service is started on demand and if disabled Store applications will not be deployed to the system, and may not function properly.

Hi all, have this problem for a while now. I have 16GB of ram and usage is extremely high while PC is in idle. 99% ram usage and 70-80% quite often. When i start the computer it's fine and then it starts slowly to increase to as i said 70-80 and finally 99%. Computer doesn't lag or lacks of performance even when 99% of the ram is used ?! If you know how to fix that s..t pls aa and that happens in win 10 and win 7 also
I checked task manager to see which process uses that much memory but nothing appeared to be out of order. Could it be some kind of virus ?

What the hell? How does that happen?

Answer:High CPU usage despite Idle at 99%?

Are you on a dual core machine? Or something with more than one core or CPU? If so, bring up Task Manager, click the Performance tab, click View on the menu bar, select CPU History and make sure "One Graph Per CPU" is selected. That way you get to see all your cores. This is the most common reason Task Manager will show conflicting CPU usage reports just like yours.

If you're not on a dual core machine/dual CPU, then something is seriously wrong. Try running System File Checker from the Run box: Start - Run - sfc /scannow (press Enter). If any files are corrupt in your machine, it'll need the XP CD to restore them to original digitally signed states.

Hope this helps...

Hello,
Basically I noticed that my PC has a lot of RAM used but no program is using the RAM - see attached screenshots. Obviously it doesnt really affect me until I launch a game: eg GTA 5 which before ran happily at 60 and is now stuck on less than 1 FPS when I get into the game (even after spending like 20 minutes in lag hell to try to reduce all the settings to the lowest)
However Rainbow Six Siege runs at 120 FPS with no issues, so GTA may be an isolated incident.

You might also want to post a screenshot of your start ups.

Cortana seems to be using a lot of memory for just being idle. If this is not being used, perhaps you might want to disable that. Your CPU also seems high for just being idle. I don't know if this 'jumped' while you took the screen image, but to me it appears that in these three images, your CPU load ranged between 15 - 36%, which seems high for your processor during basically idle time. You might want to boot into SafeMode and see what things look like. See HERE.

I would think you should see a noticeable drop in resource usage while in SafeMode. If that is the case, then it might be some software conflict.

You might have to disable one start up at a time, then test your system. If no change, go back and enable it, then disable the next one in line.

You might also be experiencing some memory leak some place, that might be the cause. However, you would have to identify which program or application. If you recently installed something just before the problem began, that might be a place to begin.

There is something that might help, at least until you get this sorted out. There's a free program called CleanMem.

I have used it for years, and I do have it on my Win-10 machine as well, although it does not indicate that it's compatible with win-10 (yet).

It will force the release of unused memory every 'X' amount of time. It's defaulted to every 15 minutes, but I have mine set for every five minutes. When... Read more

Hello Crew!!! I have been using a ThinkPad Z60t, running the OS WinXP Pro that came bundled with the Thinkvantage Software. I have had no problems with my computer for the two years I have been using it. I use it as much if not more then a traditional desktop, covering all aspects of my life, from business to gaming (although it is not a gaming comp, it does me fine). Recently, within the last week or so, I noticed a huge lag-like spike every minute or less, including when the system is idle and isn't playing anything. I ran McAfee as well as AdAware and found no issues out of the ordinary. After reading a few forumn posts, on other websites, I ran a processes check, with Microsoft based software "Sysinternals" and found that over 50-80% of my processor was being used by Deffered Procedure Calls (DPC's) and Hardware interrupts. I chose to reinitialize my entire system, back to factory settings, wiped it all. Guess what it is still doing it!!!!   I have completely updated my OS, and other forumns suggest that there is a hardware issue, or intermittent signal with the CPU or Motherboard, what can I do to test this theory or to find solutions, please help me!!!!!

Hi all,

I've got a problem with my PC - I've searched high and low but can't find a solution - any help would be really appreciated.

When it's idle I noticed that my CPU usage was hovering around the 20% mark (I only noticed as I could hear my CPU fan speed up). As soon as I move the mouse to turn the (blank screen) screensaver off, the CPU goes back to 0% usage.

I'm trying to track down the offending process using Process Monitor (in particular the Event Profiling option). The process that is affecting my CPU is svchost.exe - which I know is the host for a number of services. I checked the PID and using Task Manager, checked what processes this particular one was hosting:

UxSms
UmRdpService
TrkWks
SysMain
PcaSvc
Netman
IPBusEnum
hidserv
AudioEndpointBuilder

I also filtered my Process Monitor log to see events that were logged to that svchost.exe. What I found was an entry for every single directory on my C and D drives - see the following extract:

Don't know what the logged events mean, but I think you may have a scheduled task that is set up to run when the computer is idle. If you can find that task you may be able to solve it. I don't know a way to find tasks that run when idle except to open every task and check its conditions and that's too difficult. But if you open a command prompt (cmd.exe) and run this you'll get a list of all running tasks:

schtasks /query | find "Running"

But chances are that when you run it after the computer is in idle, the task will stop. Put the code below in a text file and save it as .bat When you run it it will list all running tasks every 30 seconds, and it will include a time stamp too.

Code:
@ECHO OFF
:LOOP
TIME /T
schtasks /query | find "Running"
TIMEOUT /T 30
GOTO LOOP
And try Process Explorer, also from Sysinternals, instead of Task Manager. It's much better!

Hi guys,
When I open Windows Task Manager the numbers in CPU never seem to add up to the 50% that it says it's being using, so I'm not sure what process is hogging it. Once I open Chrome, it can go up to 80-90%.
Also when I'm in chrome and I enter an url it seems to take longer than usual and even not going to the address just staying in the blank page.

I got told that I should include screenshots from both task manager and process explorer.

PS: I'm a new user but I'm a bit tech savy and my most fear is that it is the beginning of hard disk failure.

Hello FrekkonYour Kaspersky is running very high. Uninstall and re install it. Have your product key handy. Some errors might occur when removing Kaspersky Lab products via the Start Menu or Control Panel. As a result the application may not remove correctly or remnants of the application may remain in the system. To fully remove the installed Kaspersky Lab product, use the Kavremover utility. Note that the utility deletes all activation data and you will need to activate your product after reinstalling.

Hi guys! I'm Pig and I'm new!

I got my pc 3 years ago. It's a windows xp sp3. Three days ago I reformatted my computer because of some silly driver glitch. (I couldn't seem to finish installation of my printer's driver and my wireless internet card driver for some reason)

Now with all updated drivers and such, usually my cpu usage ranges between 3% to 9 %. But it's jumping between 27% to 55% with no running program. I thought it was simply dust so I cleared them completely off, no dice.

My system is:
Windows XP sp3 Professional
AMD Athlon Processor LE 1640
2.59Ghz, 3.25 GB of ram (which I swore I though I threw 4gb of ram in my computer)

I dun know much about computers aside from playing games and Microsoft Word/Mozilla for schoolwork. Please tell me what other info is needed to solve this annoying problem. Thanks so much! Onegaishimasu!

Hello Everyone,

Firstly, please forgive me if any of the below requests are ignorant, I am new to the world of troubleshooting Windows 7 this thoroughly.

Overview:

I have had a perpetual issue with CPU Usage and have tried several different methods of eradicating the issue without much success. After a lot of trial and error I do believe the issue lies with open services/processes that I am not confident of disabling. Could someone please help me understand or locate the resource hog.

Specs:

I currently have a new system: AS ROCK Z77 OC Formula Motherboard, Intel Core i7-3770 Ivy Bridge, 2 x Velociraptor 10000 RPM HDDs, 1 x Seagate 1TB 5400 RPM HDD, 1 x 160GB Seagate 5400 RPM HDD, 16GB DDR3 RAM, Nvidia GTX 670 GPU (4GB Version).

Core Issue:

When I first installed Windows my CPU usage was 0 at idle, now its 15%-25% at idle, and I can’t seem to find out why. Some may say around 20% isn't that bad but this is how it started with my previous system and then towards the end i had it at 90%+ and i had NO way to resolve that, so i want to address this problem before it gets out of hand.

CoreTemp manifests the following:

Core 0: 46-49C
Core 1: 49-53C
Core 2: 46-49C
Core 3: 43-46C

Processes:

I have 83 processes running and my memory usage is 2.46GB.

Here are screenshots of my Process view:

I have no viruses detected and either way my PC is hardly 3 days old.

In Conclusion:

I immensely appreciate any help and if necessary am willing to ... Read more

Hi there,

I found this forum when my laptop was infected by qvo6, and I've removed that hijacker successfully using the instructions here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-qvo6.com-browser-hijacker), thanks very much to all the volunteers!

Not sure if I'm being more sensitive to my laptop's changes because of the qvo6 incident, but recently I've found that my CPU usage is always high - at least 50% even when I'm not running any programs.

When I open Windows Task Manager the numbers in CPU never add up to 50%, so I'm not sure what process is hogging it. Once I open Chrome, it can go up to 80-90%, which hasn't really happened before (I usually can use Chrome, Firefox, iTunes, Microsoft Word simultaneously without any problems).

Would someone be able to help me with this? As mentioned, when my laptop was infected with qvo6, I ran iExplore, adwcleaner, malwarebytes and the scans are clear except for a "##### C:\Users\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\XX_clean\prefs.js"

Appreciate any advice, thanks in advance!

ETA: First time user here, so please let me know if it's not the right forum for this issue.

Please post a screenshot of Task Manager...which reflects this high usage.

Hi All,

Newby Randy here with an old issue that I need help with. I have a 9 year old Compaq 2590 P-4 laptop and lately CPU usage is always very high at idle. Painfully slow with XP-Pro and a gig of ram (max for this old machine).

I suspect I've been hijacked so I ran Hijack This and below is the log file. I'm prepared to reformat to fix this but maybe one of you gurus can advise further. Thanks Much.

Answer:High RAM usage in idle ?

You might have the problem I had earlier in the year. BC helped me fix it with the microsoft link. The other link is my post last feb. Looking in task manager you should be able to find whatever it is that is hogging the memory.http://www.computerhope.com/forum/index.php/topic,153868.0.htmlhttps://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2889748However its very odd that the issue affects Windows 10 as well on same system. Guessing you scanned for virus's and its clean.
