Building backwards, Monitor first

Question: Building backwards, Monitor first

Greetings, here is a quick story and then my question. I built my computer about 2 years ago and since upgraded a bit of it last year.

So I am gong to build an all new system. However. This time around I am going to get a VERY nice monitor first since that is what I am looking at. I was going to spend between 1200 and 3200 dollars to get one.

I asked over on the Stardock forums I was going to get a new monitor and asked what they felt was the best one available.

The CEO actually replied and said to wait till Display port 1.3 was readily available for the new 4K monitors. I wanted to size up to a 30" or thereabouts.

So, my question is twofold.

Should I wait for display port 1.3, and when will we see some monitors with it...?

and,

Should I just get a 4K monitor now if there is not much visual difference between display port 1.2 and 1.3?

I see my video card is going to need to be upgraded since it does not have a 1.3 port on it....sigh.

What I currently have:
Asrock Mobo Z77 Extreme 6
I5 3570K ( I have the hyper evo fan setup)
16g Gskill DDR3 ram (I forgot the timing, I upgraded from 8 to 16gigs.)
EVGA Geforce GTX 970, (Yea I knew about the ram issue when I bought the card last year.)
Evo 850 500 gig SSD (I was using Intel's cache drive method to speed up stuff, this was also part of my upgrade.)
Corsair 1 terrabyte storage drive
Corsair 850 watt Gold PSW.
Win 7 pro 64
Asus 27' Monitor. I am not helping you all by not remembering the model number my apologies.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Building backwards, Monitor first

I'm a little curious as to why you're planning to rebuild your system? From the looks of it, it's still a pretty solid machine. As far as I know, DisplayPort 1.3 is already out. It's been talk of another release already (DisplayPort 1.4a) is this what you were waiting for? If so, I wouldn't waste the time. As for 4K, what exactly do you do with your machine? Knowing this will make it easier for us to recommend suggestions. I personally wouldn't go for 4K right now, but that's just my opinion. There isn't enough content available and it's still expensive to facilitate. Dell has very good offerings when it comes to high-end displays. I'd personally go for either the

Dell UltraSharp U3014
or
Dell U3415W Black 34

I know there a few monitor guys in the community. Hopefully, one of them will see your post and provide you with more suggestions.

Been building a rig (takes me forver to save up for parts, so I've getting a part (gpu, psu, cpu, mobo, case, etc) a month on average).

The biggest and most expensive component is the monitor (at least for my build).

Considering.
ASUS VE248H
Newegg.com - Asus VE248H Black 24" 1920X1080 2ms Full HD HDMI LED Backlight LCD Monitor w/Speakers 250 cd/m2 10,000,000:1
I like it b/c price is decent, I like asus products, has triple versatility with ports (vga, dvi, hdmi), 2ms refresh and the like and has hdcp support. (do the ones below?)

I was orginally looking a the Viewsonic 2431
Newegg.com - ViewSonic VA2431WM Glossy Black 23.6" 5ms Widescreen Full HD 1080P LCD Monitor Built-in Speakers 300 cd/m2 DC 100,000:1(1000:1) Built-in Speakers

or 2450
Newegg.com - ViewSonic VX2450wm-LED Black 24" (23.6" Vis) LED Backlight LCD monitor

and because it was my first consideration, I was reluctant to peel away from the viewsonic. The price must be 160 to 210, but was also eyeing viewsonic VA2702, but which is outside that price range.

Most of my work is infront of a monitor, which is why for the past many months I have considered and reconsidered tons of monitors (I like sticking with asus or viewsonic though).

Answer:Building a Rig. Monitor.

Also, this GPU

Newegg.com - GIGABYTE GV-N440D3-1GI GeForce GT 440 (Fermi) 1GB 128-bit DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready Video Card

is what I was considering (mainly because of all three types of display ports) and low price. How will that hold up with games/moderate graphics processing (GIMP) and whatnot. I am pretty certain it will function and it looks very decent and great, just concerned b/c of low price compared to other gpus.

Hey, I'm new to the forum here and I have read other people's post about no signals on their monitors however none of the solutions posted actually worked for me. I suppose there must be some explanation to why I'm receiving no signal on my monitor; my computer specs are:

Intel E2160 Socket 775 Pentium Dual Core 2x1.8Ghz 800FSB
Antec Sonata III Piano Quiet Mid Tower Case With 500W EarthWatts PSU
OCZ 2GB Kit (2x1GB) DDR2 800MHz/PC2-6400 CL 4-4-4-15 PLATINUM XTC
ABIT IB9 iP965 Socket 775 DDR2 PCI-E 7.1 channel audio ATX
Pioneer DVR-112DBK 18x DVD±RW Dual Layer Internal IDE
BFG 8800 GTS OC 320MB DDR3 DVI PCI-E Graphics Card
Western Digital WD5000AAKS 500GB SATA II 7200RPM 16MB Cache

Several people have suggested to make sure my BIOS is set to boot my PCI first rather than the integrated card. However considering I cannot access the BIOS since my monitor has no signal, I can't exactly check that =x . I believe that my BIOS could be set to the integrated card because since I have no integrated card, no putput would be displayed then =/ The rest of my computer works fine, I see all the lights, all the fans move etc but I just cannot seem to get the monitor working. I have checked that my montor does indeed work on my other computer. Anyone know any solutions for my problem?

Thanks in advance.

I built my new PC and when I turn it on I get no signal to the monitor. Hooked up to my GeForce 8600GTS (DVI) using D-SUB to DVI converter. My Mobo does not have onboard video. Tried both converters in both ports on the video card. My monitor has no DVI input, only D-SUB so skipping the converter is not an option. Unfortunately I do not have a lot of parts to test with. There is no OS on the HD. I'm 100% sure my monitor is working, I was using it 2 hours ago on my old computer.

What can I do to fix this? Is the converter causing an issue? Does BIOs not recognize my videocard?

Answer:No Signal from monitor building new PC

are you 100% sure your graphics card is working? If you have a spare monitor, try plugging it into your newer pc.

Hey Guys!

I just finished putting together my computer today, it seemed to go smoothly, took me longer than expected, but when I turned it on and plugged in my monitor, there was no signal detected by my monitor...

What steps should I take to figure out what is wrong or what should I double check before worrying that the MB is busted?

Answer:After building and checking for fan operation, no signal to monitor

I double-checked a lot of things... is it possible that the motherboard I'm using doesn't support monitors through the VGA cable? I don't have a DVI cable atm...

Also could the SATA cables from the SSD HDD or DVD drives interfere with this if they are in the wrong SATA port?

I am not sure what else I should try at this point... and its frustrating to say the least

I've just put together my 1st comp with one of my friends who has built several. After connecting my finished computer to my monitor, and turning the power on, my monitor just reads no signal! i have tried using two different monitors, and i have tried using the onboard video as well as my video card. can anyone help me fix this?

Answer:No Input Signal on my monitor after jsut building my computer

What happens when you power on? Does the system start up? Does it make any sounds at all? Do you hear the CPU fan going?

Any of that info would really help the people here solve your problem

Depending on how recent your system is, you may have a P4 power connector on your motherboard, or an 8 pin version of it (no idea what the 8 pin version is called, maybe one of the gurus can help you here). Most motherboards won't post if this isn't plugged in. Sometimes you'll even have a situation where your power supply only has a P4 connector, but your motherboard needs the 8 pin version. If this is the case for you, read you motherboard manual and it'll tell you if you need to plug the P4 into the 8 pin socket, or if you need to buy an adapter. Luckily for me, my friend's machine was able to support a P4 in the 8 pin slot.

EDIT: OH! And make 100% sure you aren't plugging the main ATX 4 pin into the P4 connector. That will mess you up good I think! The main ATX 4 pin should be connected with the main 20 pin, so you shouldn't have this problem, but just make sure!

Hopefully that wasn't hard to understand. I'm just a beginner here myself. Hopefully this info is useful to you in some way. I know how stressful it is when you get a new machine that won't POST!

Hi,
I already have a desktop computer (specs are below) with Windows 7 installed in it and I was interested in upgrading it to a "Triple Monitor Gaming Setup" with a powerful "Graphic Video Card" (E.g: AMD Radeon R9 Series or NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 Ti) so that I'm able to play any recent Games on it! The sizes of PC Monitors I want to get are 27 inches!

Now, I have a few questions, here they're:
#1) With the Desktop Computer that I have at the moment, what "parts" do I need to upgrade in order to have a "Triple Monitor Gaming Setup"?
#2) What Monitor brand do you suggest?
#3)Concerning the Monitor, can you please explained to me what the "ms" mean and is it really important? (For example, some led TV are 5Ms and other are 2Ms!!)
#4) I have been told that with a "Triple Monitor Setup", it's not worth buying three monitors that have a higher resolution than 1080p (E.g: 2560x1440) due to the simple fact that most PC Games don't support such a high resolution! Is it actually true?
Thanks in advance and I would appreciate any suggestion,
Yannik; )

Here Are Some Upgrade Parts I Think I Will Need:
- Graphic Video Card:
AMD RADEON: (E.g: R9 SERIES: [R9 295X2], [R9 290X], [R9 280X] and [R9 270X])
----VS.----
NVIDIA GEFORCE: (E.g: GTX 780 Ti) OR (GTX TITAN, GTX TITAN Black and GTX TITAN Z)
- Triple Monitors Mount Stand - Up to 27" or 28"
- Three Monitors 27" or 28": Any Brand (Ac... Read more

Answer:Questions related to Building A "Triple Monitor Setup"?

1) Just your GPU unless you have something like a 500w PSU
2) Asus gets my vote every day of the week
3) Ms refers to the response time in terms of milliseconds. The lower the number the better.
4) Going higher than 1080p may cause you to run into the limitations of the GPU as it has to render 3 images at 1920x1080 for all intensive purposes thats the best part of 6k! But a 780ti 4gb will handle this fine, a 3gb version may struggle on the more demanding titles that are very Vram intensive.

So the president of our company just bought some new offices next to some other properties we own, we're going to be installing about 16 surveillance cameras that will require around 30mb/sec + network access so we can provide internet to the new building, heres a map from google earth

another

you will see that we own all the land in the green, and that is where we need to connect to, we also own the small property in yellow and there is a tiny little bridge which is owned by the city that goes over a drainage ditch between the yellow property and the one in blue which we need to connect to our network.....

does anyone know any companies that could do this sort of work for us? i would love to run dedicated fiber without paying time warner another service fee per month, oddly enough we have time warner in the green but just across the street in the blue is AT&T territory so thats a big hassle there, wifi might be an option if it can be dependable and fast, there are a few large oak trees in the way though , we cant just run wire across the city land either and im not even sure where to begin to get estimates and need some tips who to speak with, fyi this is in simi valley, california

I am the Pastor of a small church in Texas. I recently purchased a laptop to replace my desktop and plan on passing down my desktop to our treasurer. I just purchased a D-Link Extreme N Gigabit router and have networked the 2 computers to the DSL.

We recently purchased an all in one print/copy unit that has wireless capabilities that I would also like to incorprate into the network with the DSL and Other Computer.

We have our main Church building where my office is located, however; the copier and treasurers office are in our youth building behind the church. When I'm sitting at my desk I can sometimes get a low signal strength connection with the printer on the printers "network" in the other building.

With my Laptop I get great signal strength from the "DSL Network" just outside the building. The meter is around 4 bars and stays 48-54mbps. As soon as I step in the door, the signal is lost(it's a metal building).

The copier room is the first room inside the door and the next room is the Treasurers office. The room right above both is my Teen Classroom for Wednesday Night bible studies. These three rooms are really the only place in the building i'm needing to reach signal.

Currently in both machines I have one Intel A/B/G card and the other just is labled USB B/G Card. Would changing these cards to N enable me to pick up the signal inside the building? Is there a cheap meathod of bridging from building to building? This is all comin... Read more

Hello, I'm sorry if this comes out spoonfeedish, but I have been out of the tech advances for the last 5 years and I'm turning back into a noob.

Here's the thing, my wife's father has two apartment buildings in the same street and are within direct line of sight with no obstacles in between, the distance is between 100 and 120ft. This apartments are changing tenants constantly because it's close to a business district and most people only stay for a couple of months.

So onto my question, the plan is to have fiber to building A and share it to building B with an antenna and in each building there will be a cable running to each apartment from a main switch/router which will have it's max speed capped so every apartment has it's own WiFi. I need a lot of help here because I need to know what to buy, I can research how to configure each thing but the amount of products and selection that is available nowadays is overwhelming.

Short version.

-Building A and Building B are apartment buildings.
-Building A has fiber internet
-Need to connect Building A to Building B with an antenna.
-Each apartment in both buildings has to have it's own speed capped ethernet connection

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Answer:backwards itunes: HELP!

Although Apple?s iTunes program is very good at keeping a computer-based library synchronized to an iPod automatically, or for manually transferring tracks from your computer?s iTunes library onto your iPod, it provides extremely limited functionality for transferring information in the opposite direction?from your iPod back to your computer. One of the likely reasons for Apple to have taken such a restrictive approach to this is to combat piracy and thereby maintain good relations with the music labels that are currently selling their content via Apple?s iTunes Store. In reality, however, there are any number of legitimate reasons why a user may want to copy music from their iPod back to their computer, such as recovering from a catastrophic system failure, or easily transferring a large iTunes library over to a new computer. Before we get into the details of how to copy media content from the iPod back to your computer, it?s important to begin with a discussion of how that content is actually stored on the iPod. An understanding of how the iPod stores its content will make it more clear as to what the various recovery or copying options actually do, and help decide on what the best option is for a particular situation.Unlike many other portable media players, the iPod stores its content using a database methodology. iTunes copies the content itself to a hidden directory structure on the iPod and then updates a database stored on the iPod. I'm using IE6 to download an .ISO of Fedora 6. It's a big download (3.2gb) and I expected it to take some time, no biggie. But the weird thing is this: it started out at -200% or so (-223 or -232 or something) and then after awhile was at 624% (not negative) and now it's at 228% (I just now saw it drop to 227%).... what's up with that?!?!?! It started at a negative number, then jumped to 700% or so, and now it's counting down... it did NOT start at 0% and go up!!! If it was normal, I'd be at about 65% to 70% (I'm at about 2.38gb downloaded out of 3.2gb total with 2+ hrs remaining). Has anyone seen anything like this before? Am I wasting my time- will this download be OK???? It's also downloading really slow; at 110k +/- when I usually get 350k up to 700k (or more). This is just a standard download, not a torrent or a p2p thing, just a regular old download... weird. confused

Answer:IE6- Download % going backwards!!!

I cant help answer your question. But I can suggest you use a download program, I use Free Download Manager but there are others. I personally use Mozilla Firefox but no matter which browser you use I should imagine these kind of programs are much better than the normal built in downloaders. They split the file into bits like a torrent program would therefore speeding up the proccess and making it more efficient. And provide loads of other cool options too.

Hi, I have an odd problem. I have used transmit on my Mac many times to send large files to my friend's server.
I tried to send a 1.5 gb file using transmit on my Mac. My friend was watching the file come onto his server at about 300 jb's per second. It got about half way finished and the file started to diminish till it was about 55 kb.

I thought perhaps it is a Mavericks problem so I set up fireftp on my windows 8.1 machine. Exactly the same thing happened. I am not at my limit with my ISP, nowhere near it. Any ideas please?

Oh yes my router is an AirPort Extreme to which both computers are hard wired.

Sorry, that had to be said.

It gets better. I finally click "Home", figuring I'll come around the other side. Not! I get to their homepage, and click the Hotmail link. It takes me to a page where they want me to sign up for newsletters. Like I want that in my inbox. I click continue, and it wants me to sign in again!!!

While checking for solutions for some minor problems in my problems reports and solutions area microsoft suggested to me my system might be unstable and suggested going to ther microsoft update site. Soon after I clicked onto the site I encountered this message (the website has encountered a problem and can not display page there was also error# 80070002). Then it went on and offered various options. I tried turning off windows updater server then deleted all info. in the data store folder restarted server and still had the same problem. Another had me enter some text in command prompt. Also to no avail. I could not find that solution again so I can not relay that info. to you. The last one I tried had me remove netframe 1.1 and download and install netframe 1.1 redistribatable when I tried installing the download I received this message. (extracting file failed low memory or corrupted cabinet file). I ran the windows memory diagnostic tool and no problems were reported. In between trying these solutions I had tried at various times to access the microsoft forum that I am registered in each time I encountered there screen saying I am logged in but the the rest of the screen was totally white except for the word done at the bottom indicating it was done loading info. I also noticed that at serveral times durning the day I kept getting references for my problems from microso... Read more

I didn't see anything about this around the site, so here goes. All of a sudden on my laptop, it's started reverse organizing everything, but only when I'm opening a file. (File > Open) That's the only place. No matter how many times I reverse it around to A to Z, when I open the next folder, it's right back to Z to A. Sadly I'm not very well versed in being backwards. I also realize this is probably a pretty basic question I've looked around for a setting to switch, but I can't find it. Help. ;_;

It should work fine. You should just put in the sticks in alteration. 32, 27, 32, etc.

Hi,

I just upgraded my old 5500 to a 6600 and want to put the 5500 into another machine. The 5500 is an AGP 8X (I'm not sure if it's an 8x/4x) but I was told by someone here that no matter what it was, the AGP 8X would work in a 4x slot with a slight performance decrease. Well, here's the issue, my older machine has a 2x/4x slot and upon sticking in the card (which fit fine by the way, NO SHOVING REQUIRED! ) I commenced with booting. Upon booting, everything looked fine and the card was being picked up, but as soon as it got to the log-in screen, everything just started waving around on the screen like there was water inside... So, should/will an AGP 8x (maybe 4x/8x) card work in a 2x/4x slot?

Please help me!!!

My current wireless router setup is using 802.11b. I'm planning to get a new PCI wireless card, and I was wondering if I should get maybe an 802.11a or 802.11g card.

Will I be able to use either standards on a 802.11b router?

P/S: Any recommendation for said card?

Answer:802.11g backwards compatible?

From what i've read A spec is completely different, but dont quote me on that. However G spec is backwards compatible.

Any suggestions welcome. Thanks

PS. Think I am in the wrong forum as I have Windows XP, though senders have Windows Vista.

Answer:Backwards compatability

I'm not entirely sure but I think the only answer to your problem is for you to use Outlook 2007.

In fact you're lucky to even see them as text files as Microsoft rarely include any backwards compatibility in an attempt to wring as much cash from you as possible.

I'm wanting to upgrade my system, and it seemed to me that I could make a much nicer set up if I reused some of my old components (hard drive, ram, dvd rom) and only had to spend money on upgrading to core stuff (mb, gpu, cpu, psu). However, the motherboard I'm looking at supports ddr2 800 speed memory and what I have now is 667 speed. Also, my current hard drive is ultra ATA 133 and the new motherboard supports ATA100. Does this skrew up everything or will these older components still run in the new system??

Answer:backwards compatibility

I'd certainly keep your old hard drive, but get some new ddr2 (Corsair XMS2 is my personal preference).

I have two windows desktops and a mac mini all connected to a 16 port switch. All can ping each other just fine.

Both Windows machines are running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit - One machine I use as my file and media server, with file sharing turned on in Network & Sharing Center; the other is simply a workstation, I have file sharing turned off on that machine. They are in the same homegroup, and I have no trouble reading & writing from workstation to server. Mac mini is running Snow Leo 10.6.6. All machines can access other network resources (printer, Internet).

Using Mac, I can connect to the workstation (using Finder's Connect to Server), but I cannot connect to the server! This is backwards Macintosh!

I can access the user folder on the workstation from the Mac, and nothing else b/c file sharing is turned off on the workstation. But the Mac doesn't even connect to the server machine in Connect to Server. I get a Mac error saying check the IP address which leads me to think network related, but both computers can ping OK.

I have Norton 360 on the workstation and Windows Firewall on the server. Is this why? I wouldn't think Windows FW would block the Mac but allow the Windows workstation? Like I said, homegroup and even direct connecting to the share works from the workstation.

Just not the Mac.

Any ideas?
Thanks
SAM

Hi, this is my first post.

I've looked around the net, but sites seem to be giving me different messages about this, so I thought hey why not try here.

Anyway, the machine in question is a Compaq Deskpro EN, with a PIII 1GHz cpu, 256MB ram, and an AGP slot with an nVidia Riva TNT Pro 16MB video card in it. Oh, and it's dualbooting Windows XP Pro and Windows 98SE (the latter for some really old games and a few other older programs).

I thought I'd see what adding $20 of new life might do for it, by way of adding say, a GeForce2 MX400 64MB video card. Some games demand pretty much exactly that kind of card as a minimum, i.e. GeForce2 64MB or better.

So here's the question. The MX400 is 'AGP 4x'. I *think* the slot on the motherboard is 'AGP 1x'. Is that an incompatibility situation?

If it's not workable, what other options might I have, and which one would be best?

Answer:AGP 1x/2x/4x : backwards compatibility...?

Is there a way to use regedit on a drive that is not C:\ ?
I have compleatly rebuilt my computer,(MB CPU SATA) and I would like to retrieve some registry from the old drive which is now E:\. I have tried going to DOS prompt (thru start menu) and then E:\regedit. but this did not work.

Answer:Backwards regedit

Open regedit and click the File menu. Then, click on HKEY_USERS or HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. This will make the "Load hive" option in the File menu become available. Load the hive you want to examine. It will become a temporary sub-key of the major key you chose. Export the entries you want, and then be sure to unload the hive you loaded.

It's very hard to find ddr266 pc2100 ram for a reasonable price. Are the new ram speed such as pc2700, pc3200 compatible with mine?

Is it necassary to find the ram that matches your specs.

Answer:Is RAM backwards compatible?

some people had success with mixing RAM speeds such as DDR266 with DDR333. nonetheless, there are people who were unsuccessful. but most people would say that as long as your motherboard can support it (motherboard can support up to DDR400), it is ok to mix it a DDR266 but it will deafult to the lowest speed of the RAM's installed.

Yeah, I'm running Office 2000 (Pro) .

I'm currently running Windows XP but am planning to upgrade (with a new computer) to Windows 7 this year. My big problem is whether or not my Office will work. I have seen for myself that it works in Vista, but Microsoft's database says that Office 2000 doesn't work in 7.

Two questions:

a) Will it work in XP Compatibility mode?
b) If not, will it work with Windows XP Mode?

Thanks,
Wasila

Answer:2000 Backwards Compatibility

Not sure who is having a problem with MS Office 2000 in Win 7, albeit I have been using it with my laptop which is running on Win 7 32 bit.

A) yes
B) yes

After reading your post I loaded up Office 2000 into XP mode and it worked just fine. Also, loaded up in VMware's Workstation running XP and it worked without any problems.

Hope this helps, and BTW "Welcome to the Seven Forums."

Now if you can still download MS Office 2010 beta I would recommend that you do, and test it out, it is an excellent upgrade to 2007, 2003, and 2000. There is a compatibility mode so you can convert either forward or backwards.

Answer:PrintKey2000 - Printing backwards

start
setttings/control panel
printers and faxes
right click on the printer in question
click properties

Somewhere within properties look for settings for like mirrors, transfers, etc.. most likely to fix the problem you will just need to nose around the properties for a bit until you find a check box option that fixes the problem.

If the printer came with its' own software, not including drivers, it could be in the software.

This only happens on my laptop, so lucky I have my wifes to write this, otherwise it is not possible. I noticed this morning that when I tried to write an email, the cursor would automatically move back in front of what I had already written. When I continue writing, the script goes back to the beginning and pushes everything else down, or inserts elsewhere randomly. This I noticed first in Firefox, but this also happens in IE and in Word. So it is not just an internet problem. I believe it is a script issue with Java, and I have tried downloading a newer version, but this has not solved the problem.

Is it just my perception but does Vista lack alot of the backwards compatibility that XP and its predecessors had?

Usually in the relm of drivers you have a large base that just gets larger with the new release. It almost looks as though some of the XP okay devices just no longer work. Where when XP was released alot of the 98/NT/2000 stuff was all incorporated into it.

In the realm of games you had all the compatiblity modes that really helped older games. Now with vista some of the games not more than a couple years old that work fine in XP no longer function in Vista even under these compatibiilty modes.

In the realm of Apllications there are quite a few XP built applications that just no longer function and have to be revamped to work as well.

I know Vista has alot of improvements but so has every other OS prior but they still managed to hold onto the fact that you could use alot of older software as well.

What are your thoughts on Vista and its apparent disregard for existing platforms and media that is currently released?

I keep wanting to go to Vista on my home machine (i have it set to dual boot) but I keep finding a ton of reasons I have to boot back into the Windows XP disk. This really never happened to me on prior releases at all and I am a little shocked at this transition.

Answer:Is it just me? Vista and backwards compatibility.

Yes, there are a lot of hardware and software that will not work with Vista. The hardware issue is that the OEM's have elected NOT to support the not so old hardware, that is NOT a Microsoft problem. The same goes for some of the software, but with the security changes and the way programs can not make changes to the protected system as they could before, you are going to need a new version of that game and/or program.

Games are hit real hard as they were always messing with the system, but most useful programs will run under the compatibility mode.

Example, when G came out it was built with B compatibility. But when the next standard comes out will they have backwards compatibility as well? Theoretically N will just be MIMO G, so my guess is that the support should be there. If so will they only support G, or will they be kind enough to include B in it as well?

My guess is maybe. But a reason not could possibly be regarding better security.

Answer:When 802.11n (or next standard) comes out, will there be backwards compatibility?

Yes it already does, G and B work fine. MIMO is currently known as "Pre-N"...see the "pre"..because it's not officially ratified yet.

1. What operating system and service pack level are you using; e.g. Windows XP Home Edition SP2?2. Boot into Safe Mode, which loads a basic set of drivers, to see how it performs. Safe Mode also disables much of the software scheduled to load at startup (so there's less exposure to virus/malware activity). As you power up your system, tap the F8 key about once per second or faster. Hopefully you'll see a startup menu with an option to boot into Safe Mode. Use the up/down arrows of the key to select an item. Select Safe Mode item and hit Enter key.3. Try a different keyboard.4. Run a malware scan.

Yeah so I got this movie on my computer, and when I play it on Windows Media, the video looks like a mirror reflection.

It's flipped upside down and then even if you looked at it upside down the letters and pictures and everything are backwards. Anyone help how to fix this?

Answer:Reversed and Backwards movie

Where did you get the movie? If you created this, you probably have to recreate it properly.

i started a thread earlier about mouse problems. here's the link:

http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=71758

my problems appear much more severe.

i am typing this thread on a different computer because the one that was having what i thought were just mouse problems is now unusable.

the mouse now "sticks" everywhere-just absolutley freezes.

and when i type, everything is backwards. if i type "red" it shows "der."

if i even try to click on an icon on the desktop, (in those few moments before everything freezes, it selects a different icon than the one i chose.
(seems to pick the one at the opposite end of whatever row im in.)

as i said in the other thread, i ran all of the virus type scans that were laid out int the "sticky" in the virus forum, and came up clean.

the computer is a dell xps, windows xp, serv pk 2, pentium 4, 3.2 speed, and 2 gig ram.

i first started noticing mouse lag and having to repeatedly click on something to get a response, a few days ago. also, the mouse would "auto" highlight text, and would spontaeneously enable other functions, too.

now this.

does anyone have any idea what is going on here?

any help would be MOST appreciated, and is desperately needed.

thanks.

p.s. all of the progress that i thought i had made, and posted at the end of the other thread, has not been made, and in fact, EVERYTHING is much worse now.

I have bought a AGP Card off the web and when it fits into the AGP Slot the housing for the monitor cable has to pass through and the casing and be seated inside the tower case. Am i being daft or is there more than 1 type of card?

Answer:AGP Card only fits backwards!!!

Yes - there are 2 types depending upon the speed of the card - and the commensurate voltage. If you have a 4x or 8x the voltage is different and, as a safeguard, the blocking slot is in a different place. Some mobos, and some AGP cards are multi-speed and have no slots but if you cannot fit the card in the right way round, the card is not compatible with your mobo.

There is an old thread out there dating back to 2007, and the responses on Page 4 said to start a new thread rather than beat a dead horse, so here goes. My wife?s HP laptop was working fine yesterday, no issues at all. My wife was using outlook to send some work emails when suddenly anything she types is backwards. The curser moves to the left of any character that is typed. It is doing this with web browsers and when it is not hooked to the internet ( The Wife uses IE). If we reboot it works for a little bit and suddenly it goes back to the issue at hand. The left arrow is not stuck. I have tried using a new external mouse (as suggested in 2007) no help. The problem even occurs when there is no mouse attached. Are there any suggestions on the software to help detect and fix the problem, or should I take it to an expert. Any help is appreciated.

Answer:HP Laptop now typing backwards

I've found Office 2013 too unstable in Excel and Outlook and intend to revert back to Office 2010 with which I had no issues.

However my question concerns the .pst files, will they transfer back OK? In O'2013 I have noted that they are in a different location, so is it just a case of doing the usual export/import operation?

Answer:Outlook backwards compatibility

yup, there won't be any issues in downgrading your office version. Just need to point Outlook 2010 the location to your pst files. I'm presuming your term pst files = archive files.

Once you have uninstalled office 2013, open up Control Panel > Mail > Data files.

If you don't see your pst files there, you can click on "Add" to tell Outlook where your pst files are.

Hi

Previous posts here about IE8 speed complain about general speed problems. My issue is different.

I have a new pc and this is my first time with W7 x64. I am pleased with the speed at which IE8 x64 opens (almost instant), and browsing forwards to new pages is fast too, but when I browse back to a previous page there is an annoying delay of 2-4 seconds. This is especially annoying when I am trying to read an online newspaper and have to keep returning to the front page in order to read the next story!

Does anyone have any ideas?

Many thanks.

Answer:IE8 - moving backwards is so slow

Interestingly, I have just discovered that this problem does not appear when browsing backwards here on this site - it is instant!

I've sort of gotten accustomed to dealing with this issue so it isn't a high priority but I thought I would post for those who enjoy a challenge.

I have one computer where every so often, for reasons I know not, the cursor begins to move backwards and the only way I can cure the issue is to reboot.

I can't for the life of me figure out what would be causing it.

Memory is new, tested and good. Temps are fine.

To describe it as best I can I will be surfing or such and attempt to input some keywords into the box and the characters will show backwards with the cursor continually returning to the far left margin.

If you happen to be composing a post/reply and you are a couple of paragraphs into it when this occurs the cursor will suddenly begin to travel on its own from wherever it is one space at a time toward the top left of the page until it gets to where there is nowhere left to go.

If you click and put it back where it was it will merrily continue on it's journey toward the left.

Anyone ever see such weirdness before?

I have naturally scanned for viruses, trojans etc., even though I was fairly confident that there aren't any as I'm quite careful, and the scans all come up clean.

The machine runs fine and crunchers nonstop without any errors it just has this one annoying habit.

Hello, I recently corrected an issue with our software where when run on Vista, the address fields would be displayed backwards. The software is written in a Visual RPG product, and the offending fields had the RightToLeft Property set to True. This should only have had an effect on the IO field if a language pack such as Japanese was installed - at least this is the case on XP, which displayed the address correctly. Changing the property to false corrected the backwards address. I am now finding that the arrow keys behave backwards - right arrow key goes left, left arrow key goes right. Even the space bar seems to misbehave in these fields. I have compared similar fileds on the same UI that do not exhibit this behaivor, and do not see any other differences. I have tried to delete the text, update the database, and re-add it to no avail. A search of this forum and Google have not revealed anything helpful. Can anyone offer a suggestion? Thanks!

Answer:words typed backwards

Hello -

This doesn't seem like it would be something malware caused to me, and I see no active malware in the logs. When does it happen? Only using Firefox? Or using any text editor/word processing application? If only Firefox, try clearing the Private Data in Firefox. Ctrl + Shift + Del

We do also need to see a log from GMER rootkit scanner.

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here or here. Extract the contents of the zipped file to desktop.
Double click GMER.exe. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent .
If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO.

Click the image to enlarge it

In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ... Sections
IAT/EAT
Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
Show All (don't miss this one)

Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in reply.

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

I am using Windows XP Professional on a P4 2.6 machine.

If I browse my computer using windows explorer everything is fine. The files are listed in alphabetical order.

However, if I run a program that needs to open/save a file (like Word or Photoshop) then all of my files are listed in reverse order (Z to A). I tried right-clicking on the folder and displaying the files by name. But that is only temporary, the next program I open reverts to the problem.

So, I figured this was spyware or a virus. I've run my Ad-Aware, Spy Bot, Spy Sweeper, the new MS Beta program, Hi-Jack this, Trend Micro House Call, and Norton and I'm not finding anything.

I'm thinking that somewhere in my settings, there is a flag of some sort that was switched? I'm just not sure.

Any suggestions or comments? If I need to re-explain for clarity, please let me know.

Answer:Files are Listed Backwards (Help Please)

Does anyone know of any software that will either play avi videos backwards or save them to a new file so I can open then in WMP and they will play backwards? If there is no such software does anyone know any software that will export the frames to Jpegs so i can put them into Animation shop?Hope that makes senseChris

Answer:Playing AVIs backwards

Not really :-)I cannot see a reason why someone would require a video to play backwards, but each to their own.I have used Pinnacle Studio to grab still frames from a vid file, then converted the jpegs to gif to animate them for amusement.I only grabbed about a dozen, but its possible to grab as many as you require.Manually though,I dont know of any software that would batch process the jpeg production.

First, an apology: this is my first post and it's not obvious whether this ought to be in Security, Win7 or Vista message boards. here is my issue-

I'm slightly at a loss here and hoping someone can lend me a hand. I have a bitlocked external HD that I locked with bitlocker in Win7. It's my only external HD and serves as my backup. I have no problems using it on my Win7 machine however, I'd like to use it to copy some data from my friends Vista machine.

He has a version of Vista that has bitlocker installed. Going to bitlocker manager, it sees the drive and it is marked as locked, clicking unlock gets the following message: "Error recovering disk D: There is no recovery password on this volume. The volume cannot be unlocked."

Using bitlocker-to-go-reader I get the following message: "Bitlocker To Go Reader could not find any devices to unlock. Please insert a bitlocker enabled drive"

Taking it back to my machine, everything works fine. Am I missing the obvious or attempting the impossible? It seems like this should be able to work.

Thanks for any help or suggestions.

EDIT 1: It is locked with a password, (not a usb key/smart card/TPM) I have a copy of the recovery file on a usb, with me.
EDIT 2: using command prompt returns same as first error from Bitlocker manager.
EDIT 3: Forget about bitlocker-to-go. It is made for usb flash FAT32 file systems and not the NTFS system of my external HD.
EDIT 4: There's a lot of Microsoft m... Read more

Answer:Bitlocker backwards compatibility

Your problem is caused by the fact that Bitlocker-To-Go (which isn't just for FAT32 usb flash drives, it's also for FAT32 external hard drives) is the only way to access a Windows 7 bitlocked drive on Windows Vista on a different PC. But it doesn't work because NTFS is not supported by Bitlocker-To-Go (you got that bit right).

There is no known workaround for this. It requires a bit of forward planning on your part. If you think you might need to access your bitlocked data on a Windows Vista or Windows XP machine, make sure the partition is a FAT32 one.

Does anyone how to take a MS Money 2003 file and open it in MS Money 2002?

Answer:MS Money & Backwards Compatibility

Dont think it can be done, just like access, you can only open it in a later version not a previous one. Its like putting in a USB2 scanner, that wont go back to USB1, the PC will just not recognise it.
