Preferred Solution: Windows 10 major update keep fail.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My system is repeatedly trying to download W10 and fails every time. I must have 20 or more failed attempts in Windows Update since midnight the 28th of July.
Today I tried every path to achieve successful download I can see in this forum, yes every single recommendation and they all failed.
I tried the direct download path from Microsoft and this is what I get:

I have no idea what this means.
Is there a way to fix this?
My system specs:
Operating System: Windows 8.1 64 bit
Motherboard: Asus Sabertooth 990FX R2.0
CPU: AMD FX8320 8 Core CPU 3.5- 4.9Ghz
Graphics: Sapphire Radeon R9 280X
Memory: Team Zeus DDR3 16Gb
SSD: Samsung 850 Evo 500Gb
HDD: WD 1000Gb Black
External HDD: WD 1000Gb My Book
OD: Pioneer Blu-ray Drive combo.
PSU: EVGA 850W modular Gold certified
Thanks.

Edit:
Okay so I was using my original install disc to see if I could repair anything and I get this:

Of course I have Windows 8.1 installed from this very disc. As can be seen here:

So now my last option is to increase size of system reserved partition. I don't know how to do this. Which partition needs to be increased in size and where can I find instructions for this online? My disk management tool shows this:

Thanks

Answer:Windows 10 upgrade major fail

Did you reserve a copy using the Get Windows 10 icon in the system tray? If you open that now, what does it tell you about the compatibility of you computer?

Good evening all,

Just to flag that this has also been posted in W7 Support sub-forum here:

Other thread

Re. the instruction thread - the link to DSS doesn't seem to work, and GMER is for 32-bit only. If there's anything I can do to kick things off, please let me know and I'll do it!

I've googled extensively around the issues I am facing, and tried all proposed solutions, but none have worked thus far.

Symptoms:I have 1-2 minutes of freedom after booting, then I can no longer run new programmes. I also cannot close some programmes e.g. Skype. Tabs in Chrome spazz, flash player dies, and any new navigation ends up with an eternal hanging/loading problem.
Unable to restart/shutdown conventionally (I have to do it physically)
I get the error "Failure to display security and shut down options ..." when I try ALT+CTRL+DEL

Safe mode is absolutely fine, so I assume it's not anything hardware related (though please correct me if I'm being naive). My second drive which runs off XP, which I only use for storage now, boots fine and has no problems.

I have not installed any new drivers, programmes, or otherwise made any meaningful changes recently.

Solutions I've tried:Reset winsock.
Shut off all start-up programmes using MSCONFIG.
Run virus scan at boot-up, deleted 2 items (win32 installmate ... prob trojans? Was an .exe that I had downloaded but never ran).
Run Malwarebytes scan, deleted 1 fairly innocuous item.
Run full scan-disk check.
Run a SFC scan... Read more

I refurbished a Thinkpad T400 (2.2GHz dual core, 8GB memory, 320GB HDD) with Windows 7 x64, installing the OS, applying 150+ updates, then I installed ThinkVantage System Update 5.05 and allowed it to download and install updates for all the drivers in the system.  When I next went to Windows Update to download more updates, it did not allow me to do so, stating that the update service was not started.  Well, the update service and the RPC service on which it relies WERE started in the list of services.  Windows event files showed some errors, but I was unable to trace them back to Thinkvantage Update.  I tried the automated Windows Fixit and it did not solve the problem.  I also found I was unable to download anything with IE after running ThinkVantage update, so I had to download the Fixit on another computer, put it on a flash stick and then run it on the T400. Well, I could not leave the system as it was, so I reinstalled Windows 7 and immediately installed ThinkVantage System Update 5.05 again, then downloaded and installed all the drivers it found.  Same problem.  Windows Update would no longer update. Finally, I reinstalled Windows 7 again, updated the drivers with files I had downloaded previously from the Lenovo web site, and proceeded to finish off the complete Windows 7 install with all the Microsoft updates.  This time, I did not install and run ThinkVantage Update. I have previously used ThinkVantage System U... Hi,

This sounds familiar.  If you run TVSU again, don't allow it to install the Intel storage driver.  I've seen this several times.  For some reason a buggy (or maybe just inappropriate for the hardware) driver gets installed that breaks Windows Update.

If you're willing to give it a try, run TVSU and see if it's offering a storage driver.  Don't accept that one but let the others install and see if WU is still running correctly.  If thigs are OK, hide the storage driver.

I have an Acer Aspire Ethos laptop running Windows 7 Ultimate x64. SP1 is installed according to system properties (came installed).

Windows update was working fine until maybe June or May of this year.

I have tried a number of hotfixes, several microsoft fixit (automatic normal and aggressive runs), the sfc /scannow in admin CMD mode, and also uninstalled the last ten or so updates. I have also deleted the contents of the /Downloaded Installation Files/ within C:/Windows but that also did not fix the error.

Have also tried disabling my antivirus but that did not change anything, windows update will not self-update at all.

Nothing seems to work. Please help.

Below see a typical update attempt from the log (repeats almost every other day more or less the same.

I tried to update my BIOS on my T530 today.  Tried both 2.07 and 2.50 (I'm running 2.04).  I'm using the Windows app, not the BIOS CD.  With both 2.07 and 2.50, I get the following error message: "Fail to do module option. The utility process has not completed."  Can anyone help?  I saw one thread that indicated this may be because I chose the option to keep my custom start up image when presented with the option, but I was afraid to choose anything else.  FYI, now the Lenovo update utility doesn't even tell me there's a BIOS update available...it's listed in my installation history as a successful update! Thanks for any help you can offer.

Answer:BIOS Update fail on T530 - Fail to do module option

If you are on Windows 8 it is likely because you need to do a full shutdown. The default is hibernate shutdown for the next boot. Then there will be cold reboot after which if may finish the process. Windows 8 shutdowns are totally different process and the machine is never totally off.

Reloaded vista factory settings from HD as vista couldn't load [only to safe mode with a split screen!]

Checked HD and memory in diagnostics - all passed.

Got to this stage already last night with this laptop and it was gone haywire again this morning when I attempted to boot up?

So I need to know - What can I do now to avert this happening again?
Note:
I had installed updates from windows update last night and latest adobe version, norton
& chrome.

cheers

Answer:Want to avert another major fail!!

"Gone haywire" is a bit ambiguous. I take it the laptop doesn't boot up properly, and either hangs or aborts at some point. Have you had a trustworthy updated anti-virus program running on your computer? Did you visit any unusual / unexpected websites or view any e-mail attachments recently that caused some strange behavior?

When you checked the hard drive, what did you do? Did you run CHKDSK or a 3rd party diagnostic tool? Has it been defragmented? When a drive is old and beginning to suffer problems, bad sectors may appear and foul up system files, causing boot up to fail.

Booted up my computer this morning as normal. Was doing a little work when it froze completely. Had to shut it down manually. This is a dell xps 9100 with a dual raid 0 setup running windows 7 home premium.

So when I booted it back up it started running error check and has now run it repeatedly but has insufficent disk space to correct the errors. I've tried to cancel out on startup (by pressing a key as per the instruction but can't get in to backup my stuff). I get an error about .

When the disk check completes I get uspecified error 736463686b2e6378 79d.

As the system check runs and re-runs it seems to be finding more and more errors. This system is supposed to give me warning if a disk is failing in order to back it up. That function has worked correctly once with an external drive but this just came out of the blue.

My entire life is on this computer and I've been in the middle of a huge move so haven't been able to back it up. What should I do...let it keep running the file check over and over again? Take it into a shop? Is there any way to boot to safe mode to get in and save my stuff?

I don't know if this is a widows problem or a hardware problem. If anyone has any insight whatsoever I could really use some help.

Oh and also it gets through the first phase of file check no problem but goes awry in step 2 and 3

Answer:Please help - computer major fail.

First off I would stop the checks.
Second, post if the drives are the ones in the raid and if possible which controller they are on
Third, do you have access to another 9100, spare HDD, USB you can use to boot from or swap components with?
Fourth, exactly how far along your boot are you getting? I assume the bios loads, watch carefully and post exactly what steps are successful.
That error is not unknown but not really helpful either. Often associated with a bad drive or bad driver.

So im at work and im looking at the nice Ubiquiti routers which i was dismayed to find were secured with the default password well i first change them to all less congested and different channels so the wireless will work better that works. Then i see a new one i did not see before like the other 4 it too was secured with the super secret default password. Well from this one i can see and access half of this isp's customers routers...ALL default passwords and user names on the routers... This serves anything from police stations to the hospital to individual homes... I feel sick at seeing so much fail 434 customers with their asses hanging in the wind waiting for anything to come along...

So what should i do call the local paper and tell them or just sit on my thumbs and forget what i saw...

Answer:Major fail is present with a local isp

What you did could be considered against the law, talking to the media or releasing the information even more illegal, depending on country.

Send them an email notifying them about the flaw and switch ISP's, imo.

Trying to install new free fonts for my adobe and windows software from the web.
Right click and install only gets me an error messege that says font appears to not be a valid font. They all have a tff extension...and I've tried different websights and fonts, but I get the same error message....Can anyone help me on this?

Answer:Installing Fonts Major Fail

Have you extracted the font first from a zipped environment?
Are you the system administrator?

These were suggestions from: here.

Another solution was to find a font converter and convert it to a tff extension. Even though its already a tff extension I guess in that case it was a malfunction of some sort. I know excel can do that with csv's that were improperly converted from .txt files. Hope this helps.

We've written before about Windows 10's new updating policy, and today we're seeing the real-world result for the first time. The Windows 10 Technical Preview, build 9849, is being updated to build 9860. That update will roll out automatically to members of the Windows Insider program, and it will be delivered through Windows Update.
The operating system upgrade is a little more heavyweight than a regular hotfix; systems will need to reboot to finish installation, and Microsoft says that the reboot will take longer than normal.
The major feature of the new build is that it contains the first iteration of Windows 10's notification center. At the moment, it's a simple collection of historic notifications. Microsoft says that future builds will add more capabilities to the notification center, such as the ability to take actions in response to notifications.

This is the part of building Windows that you usually don’t get to see, since we work hard to smooth these out before it typically gets to you. And they call this "slow" type updates? I'd not want to think what they'd be if these were on the fast track.

One thing to keep in mind, that is if one has the chance, if there's installed security in the place of Windows Defender, remove it before upgrades. Otherwise, and was the case with me, it wouldn't work anymore, wouldn't repair, uninstall, nor could I enable Windows Defender until it could be fixed (I have an image, but am not going to bother).

These early Technical Previews are the equivalent of Developer Previews of Windows 8 three years ago, which I knew existed, but never ran. I started on the Consumer Previews, and won't participate in the program anymore until these are available, hopefully by mid to late February.

Windows has a tool called Disk2vhd, this may be a good time to install VirtualBox & test any installed Technical Previews out further, while they're still in running condition. Remember for this tool to create VirtualBox bootable VM's, the vdhx box must be unchecked, it can only use vhd files to make bootable VM's. Only certain virtual software can use the vdhx files.

Hello.  first off - thank you for being here! I am stumped by computer problems. I see that the guide says to list only one problem.  However I have many and I don't know if they are tied in to each other.  I have a Windows 7 with service pack 1 installed.  It's a home premium version.  64 bit.  the problems go back a ways but seemed to have started when I began to explore other search engines and downloaded a few to try (slimjet, comodo, tor).  I cannot update windows.  I get an error 80072EE2.  I did some reading and tried a winsock reset.  I installed and ran a MS fixit tool which only fixed one of two problems, but the computer still cannot update.  I can't remember why I ran sfc /scannow - but there were no issues when I ran it.  the other problems that started are that I can't send an email with attachment in gmail. I can't upload pictures on facebook. videos won't play properly on facebook,  the computer is very very slow.  I have run Norton security scans which usually just show tracking cookies which I remove.  I have installed and have run tuneup utilities, malwarebytes, CC cleaner, I routinely run disk cleaner and clear history.

Try stopping and restarting the relevant services. In an elevated command prompt type:

net stop bits
net stop wuauserv

net start wuauserv
net start bits

Now check for updates again. You could also try restarting Windows which should have the same effect. You want a full start from cold so use 'Restart' (not 'Shut down' because that may use fast start up). If you still have problems, see this tutorial...

Hi allI had bought hp pavilion 2x1 detachable tablet/pc in US.After using it for few months I updated windows last month. While updating it said that there wasn't space to store previous version of Windows and asked me to choose a removable drive, since the memory of the pc is only 32gb. I had been using a 64gb sd card with it and chose it as the location for storing previous version. After a while I noticed that computer has restarted and the screen was showing "Restoring your previous version of Windows". I waited for a long time but it was the same. It keeps restarting and showing the same display.I'm a sailor and I have limited access to Internet onboard now. Please help me with this issue. Thanks in advance.

Hi, I have just signed up here as I'm having loads of trouble trying to install a windows update. The update is Windows 7 service pack 1 (KB976932) and I get the error code 8024200D. I have tried the System Update Readiness tool and it didnt help. Help please.

Answer:Windows update Fail

That error means that the system thinks the updated files the installer is attempting to update already exist at a newer version. As with all SP1 installation errors, please stop the Windows Update service, make another attempt to install SP1 (and reproduce the error), and then post your cbs.log file (%windir%\logs\cbs\) showing the failure. You can re-start the WU service at that point.

Hey guys. So, i seem to be having another problem with Windows 7 (#2 to be exact). Windows Update fails to install nearly EVERY SINGLE UPDATE!!! And each time it fails, it returns the same two error codes: 800B0100, and 800736B3. Regardless of what it is, whether it is Critical, Recommended, Optional, etc... it fails! I never had this problem with XP. Does anybody have experience with this problem? Thanks!

Hey all,

Windows is trying to do an update now for the past week or so and it keeps failing on me. When I shut the computer down it will install the new updates. When rebooting windows will start to initiate and fail, then revert changes and restart.

I'm not sure what update this is, there are 8 updates and it has just came out recently.

Is there a way to see what update this might be so that I can give you guys more info? And any quick tips to try get this working? It's a little annoying.

a quick and easy check is to look at the date/time/year on the pc and make sure it is correct, some updates will not work if you do not have the correct time. Also, if you have any malware/virus and or rootkit....updates will fail

Hi there,

I'm trying to update my windows 8 to windows 8.1 on a HP Pavilion g7-2261sb.

However, after numerous trials, every time, the installation stops and says "failed to install. error code 0xc0000374".
EDIT: I checked again and it comes after the "collecting data" part.

I've ran the update checker (compatibility), and that gave no problems or errors.

What is the problem here, and how could I solve it?

Thanks a bunch in advance!

Martin

Answer:Fail to update to windows 8.1

Jus a hunch but it could be some background process that is interfering with your attempted update so I would suggest the following:

Disable all startup programs via task manager and try your update again. Also unplug any peripherals (including the printer) and test again.

Good luck.

Hey,

My laptop running the Windows 8 RTM was booting into desktop in just under 7 seconds and then, last night I was prompted for Windows Update so I installed them, as requested.

Now, boot time is over 30 seconds - there is a 10 second delay between the boot screen dissapearing and the login screen appearing.

I've uninstalled all the updates and the issue no persists. Nothing else changed.

Dissapointed.

When you tried to update, did you get any error messages?
Changing major components, such as a motherboard you may have to re-activate XP with a phone call to Microsoft. Just explain what you did and have your activation key handy
To contact a Microsoft customer service representative to activate Windows by phone, follow these steps:

I have had my device just over two weeks. Windows 10 is trying to update, over and over and over. It always fails and gives me an error code. Is this a problem caused by Windows (a quick web search shows a LOT of people are having this problem on a lot of devices) or is it the device? Should I just become an Apple person? Do they have this same nonsense where brand new devices cannot update? Do Apple devices actually run smoother or are they just as bad and even brand new Apple devices have problems?

Taking one thing at a time:

(this will only disable the indexing but you will still be able to search in explorer).

OR

Disable or rebuild the Search Index via Control Panel> Indexing Options> Advanced Button> Rebuild Button.

If either one of the above works, let me know and I'll have a crack at another one of your many issues.

Hello,
I hope I'm posting this in the correct forum.
I have about 100 PCs not able to install some updates successfully. Most of them ended up failing and most of them are failing at different updates. It only happens in two OUs. All the PCs are domain joined.  All the rest of the PC in different OUs
are able to download and install fine.
Should I check for a missing update? It seems like it started to happen when Microsoft decided to do a roll up update.
We have Win 7 Enterprise.

Yesterday I went ahead and ran the update on my computer. Everything looked ok until I rebooted the pc to finish the upgrade. It did reboot but I could not access the internet. External drives were fine, just no internet. Checked all setting, restarted my router, no help. Ran onboard diagnostics, nothing wrong. OK, so I figure the issue is in the update so I did a system restore to before the update. Big mistake! Now the computer won't boot, AT ALL! I'm in the endless boot cycle. At first my thought was a bad hard drive, but the system was working fine Thursday! Now the computer comes to the login screen, but won't accept my password, just cycles.

I tried F8 to do a factory reset, but I can't get there. Won't boot, so can't reset W10 that way either. Not sure what to do now!

Hi I bought 5 B50-30's last year for friends and family. SInce i bought them and i seem to be the guy to go to to fix/keep them up to date... I have come across this recurring problem that is causing me great problems. There appears to be an update that is corrupting the machines and causing them to go to a mode to prompt a restore. The only way forward is to carry out the restore (and keep files) but this has happened on all the machines and it is becoming quite frustrating. Has anyone else had this issue?

When I update my computer or when it does it automatically, the Definition Update for Windows Defender always comes back as failed. why is that? and do i need it if i have AVG and ZoneAlarm?

Answer:Windows Defender Update Fail

I would get rid of both AVG and ZoneAlarm, and install Microsoft Security Essentials. It will disable Windows Defender when you install it. It does a great job of anti-virus and anti-spyware, and you don't need a separate firewall if the Windows one is turned on.

Hi all, how do you remove all of windows update from a pc then install it. I have just fired up an old Vista PC after 18 months and I get the following message. "Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer"
However, Services, local and extended both show Windows update as automatic (Delayed) SATUS, STARTED.
Windows own fixit tool can not repair it nor offer any suggestions, I have followed cmd prompts offered online but the pc does not have the programmes.
Any useful advice, no I do not want to upgrade this pc as it is not Win 8 compatible, will be greatly received.
Thanks

Hi,

I've been experiencing a problem that several others have previously reported however each fix I try seems to unearth another problem. The problem started when Windows started spontaneously re-booting during startup. I eventually fixed that by booting of the original CD and using WIndows Recovery Console. However that seemed to trigger downloading of several updates.

Basically with Automatic Updates switched on, all updates downloaded fail to install. With Automatic Updates switched off, running Windows Update results in the message:
"The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view"

I'm running SP3 on Windows XP Home Version 2002. I've tried various Microsoft Fix It solutions but they don't seem to fix anything. ONe problem I've unearthed is that Cryptographic Service are not started and any attempt to start them fails with an error of 193: 0xc1.

My repair attempts are a bit scattergun - I hope someone can guide me through a more logical sequence.

Yesterday I got infected with Malware and then removed with SUPERAntiSpyware + Malbytes.

Here is the original forum post I made -- but now it's no longer a malware issue (I don't think), but rather a software/setup issue (I think).

I'm still having an issue where my Avira Antivirus won't update/work and Windows Update won't update/work either.
Avira simply fails at accessing the Internet.
The windows update error I get says it is prevented from accessing the Internet. However, it is able to get to 35% before FAIL. Hmmm.

A friend of mine has a Win 7 PC (upgraded from XP). She calls me a couple days ago and says all she sees is black screen. I go over there and noticed Win 10 logo during boot then it freezes. I asked her if she updated and she said every time it asked she said no. I assume it auto updated her outdated machine and now it cant run it.
How do I remove this to go back to 7? F8 does not work.

i think i saw a few other links in the forums here for removing and stop the win 10 Auto update thing from windows update , so check the other posts as well so it does not happen again after you roll it back

its highly possible that since her system shipped with XP that the vid chip wont boot to the Win 10 OS ,,trying to get in safe mode is a pain with Win 10 , MS should have made it easier

After factory resetting my laptop I had to start again with the windows updates. After installing many of them the past 2-3 days, I now get a fail message with these specific five.

Updates that fail with Code 80073712:

I ran the sfc /scannow command and it says that it found corrupt files but was unable to fix them.
Τhe log is pretty big (that can't be good) and it cannot be attached here unfortunately. So I'm giving a dropbox link (I hope this is OK) for it:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/stuug5snusw0m0g/CBS.zip?dl=0

I also ran the SUR tool, but I couldn't get it to install or work. I read that you have to wait for it, but it was on for about 3-4 hours installing a Hotfix and the bar did not even begin to get full.

Any help would be appreciated as I lost much of my time these past few days with formatting and trying to make my laptop as it was before.

Try disabling you anti-virus and run the SUR tool again

I am running Windows 7 64bit. I have 15 updates that continue to fail. YES, I KNOW THE IMAGE SHOWS "1" - that's because I wanted to see if could actually perform one SMALL update. They're just a bunch of Security Updates for MS Office programs. DO NOT tell me to download these updates manually. THAT IS NOT A SOLUTION to a problem that will continue on forever.
I clicked "Get help with this error" which brought me to the window's help as seen in the second half of the image. These errors have NOTHING to do with the problem I am having. I have searched google and NO solution helps me.
YES, I have disabled my antivirus program already and they still fail.
YES, I am logged in as the administrator and I have all the necessary privileges.
YES, I have used Windows' crappy troubleshooter.
YES, I used Window's crappy automatic "fixer" or whatever that junk is called.
About a week ago my computer was running EXTREMELY slowly and opening just about any program that was part of office was EXTREMELY laggy. I ran disk defrag, disk clean up, and I went through a bunch of services and start up programs that I didn't need and disabled them. This increased my computer's performance and MS Office no longer lags. Could the laggyness I experienced related?

Answer:Windows update installations continue to fail

Sometimes the inability to install updates could be malware related. I'd run a full scan with the free Malwarebytes. It seems to find things other programs miss. This link compares the free version to the paid version with downloads to each.

Malwarebytes : Malwarebytes Anti-Malware PRO removes malware including viruses, spyware, worms and trojans, plus it protects your computer

Another reason for failed updates could be due to damaged or corrupt system files. You could run the System File Checker scan from an elevated command prompt (Option Two this tutorial.) If any problems are noted run the scan 3 times rebooting in between each scan. More than one scan is usually required due to system file dependencies.

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

If these two suggestions don't solve your update issue, you might want to troubleshoot using a Clean Startup (also called a Clean Boot.)

I was trying to upgrade to windows 8 Pro on my Lenovo G580, as I got my student license from my University. There started the problem, when trying to upgrade from the DVD (burnt ISO) the upgrade immediately sends "Setup failed to initialize the startup folder" error.

So after few searches, I found on lenovo website that I need to install all important updates first. That's where I found another problem, which is my thread about. I tried so many methods until I found this forum.

Few other problems I ran through while trying to fix it alone:
Updating seems like stuck at 0KB total, 0%, and returns the same error after a while.
Can't enter safe mode from F8, it gets stuck at some CPNP file while loading. However, I can enter the safe mode by choosing Safe Boot from Msconfig and restarting the system.
Running CHKDSK from CMD [Admin] gave "F Parameter not specified, running in read-only mode", and then runs normally.
Tried to download and install updates alone, they all fail when trying to install.
One of the times where the update readiness tool was running, my pc encountered BSoD. And once when I was scanning with malwarebytes.
SFC Scannow command scan returns that no violations in integrations where found.
Note: I just ran the SURT, it said installation successful after a while of running it!

Thanks in advance,

Rahmani

HI,I have a yoga2 pro, with Bios 76CN27WW running Windown 10. I'm trying to update to the latest version, 76CN43WW. However upon running the installer, after the command for InsydeFlash64, I get an error message that no ROM are available in the folder. There clearly is a ROM, since I simply extracted the Lenovo bios files and that went normally. Tried with administrator mode, redownloading, and I always get this error.  I read on some HP forum that seems to use the same BIOS update tool that this is caused by the new bios not recognizing the very old one I have installed, and not letting me upgrade. However, I can't find any links of 'intermedidate' versions on the lenovo site that I could use as a step to bring this to the latest.  Any ideas? Thanks

I did a clean install of W7 Professional a couple of days ago.
For the record, I have used the same disc on this same laptop previously with success.
After this instal, I repeatedly ran Windows Update to capture all relevant fixes, SPs etc.

It reached installing SP1, but only a few KBs after that, I got an error.
I followed Microsoft's recommended 'Fix It' instructions, read several online forum threads, phones MS support, used MS live chat.

2 days later, my WU still does not work.

Microsoft's stance, is that my purchase of W7 is only covered by warranty/support for 90 days after purchase.

I wonder how this would stand with the UK's SOGA, where is states that any product must last a 'reasonable' length of time.
Is 90 days 'reasonable' for an OS ?

I realize that in many IT situations, the infinite combinations of hardware, software and customizations on user's machine, make a good case for 'whos fault it is'.
However, this is a Sony Vaio, clean install with a formatted HDD.
Surely W7 should be 'fit for purpose' and should still work for at least a year or 2 !!??

Has anyone got any insight as to legal case involving things such as this ?
I know you will laugh, but I was thinking small claims court. (wish me luck).

Answer:Windows Update Fail. Consumer Rights in the UK ?

When I'm using the PC Settings app (Update and recovery) it seems almost all my Windows Updates fail with error 80200011. However, if I go to the desktop Windows Update and do the update from there, it succeeds.

Stranger still, if I check the update history from within the Desktop Windows Update, it shows every attempt to update and shows them failing. If I check the Update History from within the Metro app, it says the last update performed was on December 15th.

I have a Surface Pro 2 and I know that I installed the Firmware update from Microsoft around December 13th, so that might be related. Anyone have any idea what's going on?

Answer:Windows Updates fail from within Update App in Metro

hi, are you running windows 8.1 or windows 8? You may need to install pre-requisite updates through the windows 8 update software before you can use the metro update app. You could try and reinstall the operating system and see how that goes or if it still troubles you, contact the Microsoft helpdesk!

i tried to update my machine... i used windows update, it failed on 7 of the 8 critical updates. i tried it again, it happened again.

i'm guessing i have some kind of virus. that goodoo shit i had keeps popping up, and i dont know where it comes from, so i dont know how to get rid of it.

when i hit netstat -a... all the ports that say "listening" and would normally have the foreign address be the name of the computer you're on... they all say 00.goodoo.ru.
suggestions?

Ok so I recently updated my graphics card, which was an amd. Not sure exactly what kind and don't care. I updated it, and resettrs the pc. I notice the startup was slow, but it made it all the way to the home screen, and then the problems began.

My comp began going very slow, and was laggy. I decided to uninstall everything that came with that amd update. I was close to getting it finished, the screen went black and all I saw was the mouse pointer. I tried my best to give it some time but It took forever, so I force resetted. Probably my mistake, and should be waited longer.

After force restarting, of course I'm met with the error message that something has gone wrong. I've tried to reset the pc, which worked before, but now after going through the whole process, it tells me it failed to do it. That was my only hope. I can't enter safe mode for some odd reason, and can't get the choice to reset my pc. I was able to backup my files with my USB drive so that's a good thing.

I have no repair disk and had to order one on Amazon. Only option I have left right now is the chkdsk which is going to take almost 2 hours to complete, but I doubt it's going to solve anything.

My main question is if there is any way to resolve this problem maybe via command prompt? Or maybe just get a way to enter safe mode. I feel if I can at least get safe mode, I can uninstall that driver. I know me force shutting down my laptop most likely corrupted the process, or maybe it just froze up.... Read more

Need to know if I resolve the issue via command prompt

- there won't be one magic 'Fix my computer' command that will solve all your problems, I suspect.

If you boot from Win 10 install medium (DVD/flash drive) you can navigate to an option to start in Safe Mode.

You can also boot from Win 10 install medium to a command prompt, discover the drive letter now allocated to your system disk/partition and then run
chkdsk x: /F
- where x is the drive letter allocated (almost certainly not C).

You can also get this and create a CD/flash drive (flash drive - use Rufus, freeware).
Windows 10 Recovery Tools - Bootable Rescue Disk - Windows 10 Forums
Check the SMART parameters of your presumed HD using one of the utilities.

We need to be sure your disk is ok before proceeding.

Heads up and an apology, but this is long, and may be confusing.First up; My O/S is Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bitPreface:Alright cool. So I've built this machine myself and have had it since Jul 07 with minimal problems, but none really with Vista itself. Come a few months ago, I decided to install Service pack 2 beta, and soon after that, upgraded my memory. Suddenly I'm getting graphical problems, and no amount of tinkering with drivers or uninstalling or reinstalling the video card fixes them. I chalk it up to the possibility of SP2 beta might be the problem. I try uninstalling, it won't.So, that leads me to now, where I've reformatted my system drive, and reinstalled Vista three times, two being with the help of Microsoft on the phone, and every time leads to dead ends and my main problem now: windows update won't update properly. First go, I have like 74 updates, and with them all selected I install them, the vast majority fail, maybe two succeed, I'm prompted to restart, I do, then I still get 74 updates available. I decided to try and nip this in the butt, and install each update one by one, starting with all the 'important' ones first. I get about 20 installed, which they all fail the first go, then install fine; until one just won't install no matter what I do (clearing windows\softwaredistribution\download\, stopping and starting the update service).I've tried installing service pack 1 with the standalone installer, but it gives me an "intern... Answer:Windows Update installs continously fail

If you've reinstalled Vista 3 times (and have made sure that all your drivers are installed), then the problem is probably not with Windows.2 possibilities that I can think of are:- a boot sector virus (this presumes that you just reformatted the partition that Windows is on - and not the entire drive)- failing hardwareSince you've tested the memory and it passed, the next suggestion would be to run a bootable diagnostic utility on your hard drive.I always recommend the utility from the manufacturer of your hard drive (rather than generic utilities) - as the manufacturer sometimes uses additional tests that are specific for their hardware. There's a list of the most common one's here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/28744/hard-drive-installation-and-diagnostic-tools/I'd also try some scans to see if there's any evidence of a boot sector virus. Here's a link to some free, online scans. The reason for the online scans is that they'll detect stuff that may have gotten "behind" your current protection. http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/blogs/usas...?showentry=1252Once all that's done (please let us know the results of the tests), also please let us know your system specifications. Please include the make and model of your motherboard so we can do a bit more research.

Hi Garyalbert,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

I?m sorry to hear that you are facing the issue with No POST on ThinkPad X240.

To resolve the issue I suggest you to perform power drain, to go with power drain option please removing power adapter and battery. Hold the power button for 30 second and then connect only power adapter and try to switch on the system. If the system is switching ON then connect battery and check it once.

Hope this helps!

Now spent over 8 hours on this and still no resolution. Tried SFC online and offline, Windows Update Troubleshooter, In-place install -- these all fail. I've checked TrustedInstaller, ran half dozen anti-malware apps -- nothing. System Restore, no change.

I do not want to do a clean install because I have old programs I need that no longer have install media. Any more ideas would be greatly appreciated!
