System Update on X1 Carbon 20FB

Question: System Update on X1 Carbon 20FB

Hi, I've got an X1 Carbon 20FB (4th gen), and noticed it doesn't have Lenovo System Update on it, which I've found useful in the past. So I went to the Lenovo downloads site and found System Update, but it doesn't list the 20FB as one of the X1 Carbons it supports - it only goes up to 20BS, 20BT: http://support.lenovo.com/se/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-x-series-laptops/thinkpad-x1-... (See the "Note for ThinkPad X1 Carbon users") Should I avoid downloading System Update then? I've not noticed anything that's not functioning, but I figured it makes sense to keep things up to date from a security and features point of view. Why is it not included by default? Thanks for any advice!

Preferred Solution: System Update on X1 Carbon 20FB

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I'm setting up a new X1 Carbon with machine type 20FB. It came with a Samsung MZNTY256HDHP SSD. I noted there was a recent SSD firmware update package for this laptop model, so I downloaded and ran the updater. It reported there were no updates. However, after digging a bit deeper, I discovered that the SSD firmware updater for the X1 Carbon 20A7/20A8/etc. DOES have an update for the SSD in this machine. What is going on here? Does this firmware update somehow only apply when the SSD is installed in a 20A7? Or did this particular model of SSD just get missed when Lenovo was putting together the firmware update package for the 20FB?

We've purchased about 2 dozen 4th gen x1 carbons, machine type 20fb, and have been having some intermittent keyboard issues with multiple laptops.  At least 3 different units have had problems where the keyboard doesn't seem to work at all.  After power on, we press F12, F1, or Enter to try and access different functions, but they have no effect.  Once windows loads, we still can't type anything.   The first time my tech ran into this, he rebooted a few times and was still experiencing the same issue, he set the laptop aside for me to look at.  When I turned it on, they keyboard was functioning normally.  Later, after loading our image on the computer, he was preparing to deploy it to a user when the keyboard stopped working again. I fired up a new laptop this morning, fresh out of the box, and had the same issue, a non-functional keyboard.  In this case at least, the touchpoint/touchpad didn't work either.  I rebooted, tried to get into UEFI config, and after a couple of more reboots I tried pxe booting, but nothing I pressed on the keyboard seemed to help.  I turned the laptop off and put a note on it that it had a bad keyboard, but when my tech came in and turned it on a couple of hours later, they keyboard is working fine.   I've got one in front of me right now that was working this morning, but now the touchpad/point aren't responding.  Keyboard is working though.  L... Hi, does anyone know if there is a list of compatible embedded LTE chips that will work on a X1 Carbon 20FB?  The reason why I ask this is bec the current model, EM7455, only operates at some frequencies that some abroad contries do not support and the older models such as the EM7355 support those frequencies.  One being GSM.  I tired to install a EM7355 into my 20FB laptop but the bios isn't allowing it. Thanks!

Answer:X1 Carbon 20FB Embedded LTE Compatibility

EM7455 is versatile enough and supports a lot of 4G/LTE including LTE-A and 3G bands worldwide. It does not support 2G (GPRS/EDGE) access technology.

Hi, We are having an issue with our X1 Carbon's(20FB). The audio output via an HDMI cable works, we see the Epson speakers in the playback devices. After the user is logged on for a while, the speakers will no longer showup in the playback devices and the auidio will just come through the laptops speakers. After we restart the computer, the audio will again work and play to the speakers. Windows 7 X64 Any help or thoughts on this is greatly appreciated.  Thanks,John

I recently got a X1 carbon 4th gen (20FB), and I have been super happy with its performance. However, it seems like whenever I have the laptop closed, the keyboard is leaving a mark on the screen. I sent it to repair, and they changed the screen, but that didn't seem to fix it. I noticed that the body and the lid are not perfectly aligned - one of the corners of the lid seems to be jutting out a little bit with respect to the rest of the body. I've attached picture to show this. I'm not sure if this is a part of the general design of the Carbon.  Can anyone with a X1 carbon 4th gen confirm that this alignment feature is not present in their machine? Thank you ?

Hey, About a week ago I came back from vacation, Jan 20-29, and I installed a bunch of updates through the lenovo service center. A couple days later I noticed the fingerprint scanner had stopped working and a couple of days ago I noticed my usb ports weren't working either, with several usb drives that I had proven functional on a friends computer. After reinstalling some BIOS and usb drivers I have solved the usb problem, and I'm almost positive the fingerprint scanner is the result of some software. The timing is way too convenient to be anything else in my opinion. When trying to set up fingerprints through the "fingerprint enrollment" window it'll say "Cannot communicate with the sensor, please confirm the sensor is ready." Any and all suggestions are welcome. Morten Nissov

We've got about 2 dozen of the 4th gen x1 carbons, machine type 20FB, and have had a high number of display related issues with them.  At the moment, we have 3 sitting upstairs waiting for UPS to pick up for shipment to lenovo service, and one more on my desk that was just acting up.  I'm told that we have previously sent in at least another 3 or 4 laptops for similar issues.  I understand that those previous laptops had the displays replaced, and that we have yet to see a recurrence of the issues in one that has been repaired. The problems we've seen are intermittent, and generally fall into one of two categories:FlickeringVideo garbled, missing sections, or complete garbage.  The flickering is sometimes very faint, barely noticable, but other times it's more pronounced, bad enough that users complain of headaches and/or "it's going to cause seizures!" The garbage video issue is what I just saw with the laptop sitting on my desk.  It went to sleep, and when I woke it up, this was what I saw:? After a few moments, the laptop rebooted on it's own and the display was back to normal, but I don't want to send this out with a user now just to get a support call when it happens again. Is anyone else having this sort of issue?  Or did we just particularly unlucky?

Hi Team, I am getting an issue with PXE booting my X1 Carbon 20FB. I have plugged in the default 'PCI LAN' adapter that came with it. the option is called 'PCI LAN: IBA CL Slot 00FE v0106'. I have other options, but they're windows boot manager and the HDD.  I have turned off secure boot, and have legacy and UEFI boot enabled. i have also tried with either one on and off.  When booting from here, I get the DHCP request, and when i try to hit F12 to start building from network, it seems to not register me hitting F12 or it skips passed it? Please help.  Thanks,

Hi folks, We have several Lenovo X1 Carbon 20FB Windows 10 Pro laptops.  More than one of them experience WiFi connection issues. Specifically and consistently when we move from room to room on our floor.  Even if connect automatically is checked, when we get to the destination, we may get connected to the AP, but unable to access anything, until we disable/enable the WiFi adapter.  This happens everyday, everytime.  I've been in the habit of disconnecting before I move. All other WiFi devices, phones, do not experience this issue. Anyone hear about this?

Hi, trying to get a Windows 7 Install done on a Carbon X1 2016 20FB w/ Samsung950 Pro. Bios 1.14 (latest as of May 2016)Special issue is, I need to get it done in a Legacy mode (BIOS,MFT style). I was able to install Win7 based on a win7 image that got the 950pro drivers and the USB3 drivers infused through NTLITE, and then I build an image with Rufus 2.9 (both UEFI/GPT and UEFI/MFT) worked, with the X1 BIOS was set up to UEFI only with CSM.BUT I need to to run on the BIOS setting 'Legacy' and in MFT style, b'cause the special Win7 installer I need to use does not support anything else. I know, sounds weird, but..... . So- is there a fundamental limitation against booting / installing a Win7 on a Carbon X1 2016 20FB - Samsung950 Pro in Legacy 7 MFT mode?

Hello, I have this problem for month now :I close my X1 Carbon lid before going to bed, and in the morning, when I resume it from hibernation, the trackapd and trackpoint are totally unresponsive. Everything else work fine, I just have to wait, sometimes 20/30sec, sometimes a whole minute, to have the trackpad working. This is very frustrating to have a computer resuming so fast from hibernation but being unable to use it. I have the latest BIOS (1.15), latest UltraNav driver (19.0.17.98).Tried several drivers uninstallation/reinstallation, several fresh windows install, problem is still present. Actually on a fresh install of Windows 10 64bit (Anniversary update).

Will it be fixed? DON_

Answer:Extra hard drive for X1 Carbon 4th Gen (20FB)

The X1 Carbon 4th Gen doesn't have an mSATA slot. While it has an M.2 2242 slot for the WWAN card, you can't use this slot for an SSD.

If you just want to expand the storage of your device, I'd suggest to replace the 128 GB SSD with a larger M:2 2280 SSD.

Hi, I updated my X1 Carbon 4th gen to 1.17 BIOS, and since then, opening the lid won't wake the computer from hibernation, except when plugged.Bios changelog states Disabled the power button when the computer is in battery mode and the
computer lid is closedbut when I read "power button", I don't think "this is gonna break the behavior of the lid". And of course, no rollback is possible from 1.17, so I'm stuck with a computer wich won't wake from hibernation correctly. I just can advise you all to not upgrade bios, and see what's inside the next version...

Just got my brand new X1 Carbon (4gen 2016/20FB) with the 512 GB PCIe NVMe SSD (THNSN5512GPU7). Was expecting a blazing fast disk, but it felt sluggish something that AS SSD Benchmark confirms (see attachment). According to the specs this drive should offer up to 2400 Mb/s read and 1500 Mb/s write. But I get 1800 MB/s read and abysmal 113 MB/s write. The machine has all the latest updates from Lenovo (incl BIOS) and all the drivers for Windows 10. Anyone else tested their drives? Found a Dell XPS owner with the same drive that complained about the same issue. Turning off windows write cache buffer flushing does help, but that is not a good answer.

Hi all, I have the X1 Carbon 2016 (20FB) and it is running Windows 10 Enterprise. I have all the lastest Windows and Lenovo updates. It all works pretty well except when it comes to starting back from sleep mode. I have the laptop configured to go to sleep when I close the lid. However when I reopen the lid, the power button and keyboard lights come on but the display stays off. Opening and closing the several times doesn't help. The only way to get the display to turn on is to quickly press the power button. This puts the laptop to sleep. If I press the power button again the laptop comes back to life and the display works again. Anyone else have this issue? Any possible solutions? Thanks,Ian

I set the trackpoint speed in the mouse pointer options in control panel to max speed, and , then I also set the trackpoint to max speed in the synaptics specific driver.  This is great, the mouse is really responsive and i can scroll quickly and move the mouse from the left side to the right with very little pressure.  Recently though, I have noticed that the trackpoint has about halved in responsiveness and to move at full speed i have to apply maximum pressure against the trackpoint.  This is making my finger quite sore and is extremely annoying.... even my old t430 and T400 have way better trackpoint responsiveness.  I've tried reinstalling the trackpoint driver but no luck.   I noticed that there seems to be a fairly recent trackpoint driver update and was wondering if that was the problem.  But, lenovo do not publish the older drivers like they used to .    How do I fix this? I'm not even certain whether it is a software issue or hardware!!!

I have had my Dell 8700 for little over a year and have had problems from the beginning.  I am 72 years old, and I am at my wits end!!!

A hard drive was replaced in the summer of 2015, but I have still had problems with the computer shutting down and my having to refresh it to factory setting.

I thought updating to Windows 10 would solve some problems, and I did this in October, 2015.  Everything was fine until a couple of months ago.  The end result was when I tried to refresh the computer to factory defaults, it went back to 8.0 or 8.1, and I evidently lost something in the process.
Now, I cannot update to Windows 10 and when I tried to resinstall the Dell Operating System, I get for both:  "WE COULDN'T UPDATE THE SYSTEM RESERVED PARTITION."
I DO HAVE A SYSTEM BACKUP ON 20 CDS (MADE WHEN I HAD WINDOWS 10).  Could I reinstall the system with these backupdisks?  How do I do that?  I also have a Dell 2 Boot USP stick, I have a recovery stick, too, but it semed that when I used this, I received a message that not all files were recovered
What should I do at this point?

Answer:Error message when trying to update to Windows 10 or to reinstall operating system 8.1: We couldn't update the system reserved partition."

On MBR disk, Windows 10 requires a 500MB system reserved partition, while 100MB in Windows 7, so you can try to extend system reserved partition.
In disk management, you can only extend partition using the unallocated space next to its right side. so even if you shrink D: drive, the option to extend the efi partition is still grayed out. My suggestion is to use a third party software, AOMEI Partition Assistant, both the standard (free) or the Professional(paid) version can extend partition as long as there is unallocated space on that hard drive. to see more information read:

Hi, I have an X1 Carbon. I did an  automated Windows update today, it seemed to work fine initially but then my laptop got into a blue screen loop and kept restarting. The computer worked for a while after that and then gave a blue screen again. This time the keyboards flashed as well for a while, and then the computer turned off. I cannot start the laptop since then. I searched the forum and tried the hard reset, but it did not help. When I try powering on,  keyboard lights turn on for just a second and then they go off. The green power button light turns on  but the computers does not start. Can anyone help? I am traveling for work and looking forward to getting help. Thanks!

Hi,I would like to update BIOS for X1 Carbon 1st gen. When using the Utility tool for BIOS update downloaded from the support website,it prompts an alarm saying that it cannot do a BIOS update when the battery is low.The battery is not charging and has 0% charge.Actually this was the main reason why I wanted to do the BIOS update. Is there any way to ignore this (like not letting it check the battery or.. allowing a battery with 0%charge)?Could it be possible to force updating by using forceit? g6uj24us.exe/forceit?I read a posthttps://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-T61-and-prior-T-series/Updating-BIOS-on-Thinkpad-T60-no-batter...but I could not find the winpflash tool. Any help or ideas will be appreciated. Thanks in advance!!

Major issues after installing some updates this morning.  Now, although I cannot 100% prove it's related, I have lost: -ability to install drivers (to fix some issues), getting permission errors, and I am logged in as admin-scrolling on webpages...went into Mouse settings for UltraNav, I click the box for 1 and 2 finger scrolling, hit apply, and the box is unchecked.-opening LSC...saying "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file.  You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." Like I said, it may not be related, but nothing else has been changed in the past day or so.  The LSC updates were a lot--BIOS, drivers, etc. Running 8.1.

I just updated my laptop (the bios update) that was recommended by Lenovo, and I left it on to update as it told me not to touch anything or turn anything off. After the update, during its automatic restart, it went to this screen and just stayed there for about 12 hours. Since then, I've tried playing around with the BIOS menu and tried doing the F11 - Recovery, but it returns to the same windows logo screen, except it loads for about 3 seconds and says 'Preparing Automatic Repair' and freezes. P.S. I had Windows 8 (factory), but updated to Windows 10 (free upgrade) way back when they were offering the free upgrade. ?  I may just try taking it to a repair shop. I would like to be able to recover files before wiping the entire drive, but if needed, I am willing to lose everything in order to have my computer working again. Thanks in advance,

I do see the device in the boot list (as usb hdd) but selecting it as boot device just throws me back to the boot device selection. How do I install this from USB?

Hi all Since I installed Windows 10 Creators Update (someday in April) I am having an issue with the mouse cursor being very small in all citrix applications and on some parts of the screen in Word. This totally drives me nuts since i support most of my customers in citrix applications. After browsing the forums with no results whatsoever I decided to roll back to the previous version of windows and give the Creators Update another go in a year or so. Since I couldn't roll back to the previous Version of Windows in the Windows Update app (the option just doesn't show up),  I did a full restore by means of the function provided in the Lenovo BIOS. That did work fine but it just reinstalled with the current Version of Windwos (1703 wich is still Creators Update). So no joy there. How can I restore to the Windows-Version that the Notebook was shipped with? I can see a unmounted partition of 1 GB in size. That sounds promising although a bit small... Any ideas? Thank you Markus

Hello, I have searched the database for assistance with the following problem but did not actully come across a sloution, does anybody here know an answer to this problem: I run a X1 Carbon, Type 20A7, operating Win8 pro 64x I attempted to use the "Lenovo Settings" app to share my network connection via the hotspot function. However, what supposedly looks like the "share" button is just a grey button with no indication of its function. Pressing it effects an update prompt leading to  a file named "settingsdependencytp" being downloaded. I have downloaded and executed the file before restarting the machine. I have achieved no result. On restarting the appa the button is still grey and I am being prompted again to download an upgrade, which leads to "settingsdependencytp" being downloded again. Any suggestions? Thank you PAHS1

I found a work-around that works for me: open CMD as adminwrite the command:netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=SSID key=PASSWORDthis will create the hosted netwrokSSID stands for the name you want for your wireless network (the name you'll see on your wifi networks on your phone).PASSWORD is the network password you like to assign for your network.then, write the command:netsh wlan start hostednetworkthis will start the hosted networkthen go to control panel>network and internet>network and sharing center>change adapter settingsthere you will see your new hosted networkselect your connection (from which you get your internet access from), go to properties>sharing. and then check share this connection with other... and select your new hosted network.  If anybody gets the issue with the app solved - let me know, please!

Hi, so, got my X1 a few weeks ago, love(d) it. The other day Win10 updates were applied, didn't think anything of it until the system had an "Upgrading Windows" display like it was doing an installation. I ignored it, assuming all was well. Boy was I wrong. When it finished, the system came up, I decided to try to change a theme. I tried to access the themes setting and the screen would flicker and then come back. I tried installing a new themepack (yes direct from Microsoft, yes Win10 compatible) and the window that usually pops up after the install completes never appeared. I called Lenovo Support, they eventually routed me to Microsoft Support, who talked me through a few more things and then we discovered that Control Panel would not open. I also noticed a new folder in the root of the HD, "Windows.old" - what's that doing there? This was a brand new machine, not an upgrade, and I know that folder wasn't there before. MSFT told me to open System Restore and it was turned off. At this point MSFT told me I had a virus and had to restore the PC. Stupid me assumed that doing so meant that the machine would be reset to factory specs, uhm, no. (I know at some point factory resets were "baked in" to the OS at some point and figured Lenovo had done something similar.) Of course doing to wiped my preload and now that system is on its way back for a replacement (thankfully this happened within the first 30 days I had it.) Well here is where it gets interesting. I still have my... Read more

Yes that's correct you need a USB stick with copy of windows on it that you can boot into and install usually laptops without a optical drive would have a partition or program that will let you create a recovery media to a USB stick, secondly program you mentioned can generate a full copy of ssd onto a external HDD so you can restore everything later and i mean then it will backup everything, OS, Programs, documents, pictures all of it will be backed up via program you mentioned.

Hello, I have a ThinkPad X1 Carbon 3rd generation. Two days ago, I have updated the BIOS to the latest version 1.12. The installation went well and I successfully booted into Windows 10 with no issues. However, the fan was not working anymore. I did not notice this until the laptop was extremely hot (which is very unusual for this laptop under low/medium load). In particular, I was just running a "disk cleanup" using the native Windows tool and after 5 minutes I decided to kill the process (this operation usually takes 1-2 minutes). My feeling was that due to the temperature the cpu was in throttling. At that moment, I noticed that the fan was not active. After a shutdown, the fan was again working. However, I noticed that the fan kicks in much more often than it was used to. For this reason, I did two things:- I have downgraded the BIOS to 1.11: BIOS 1.12 updated the CPU microcode, I am not sure that the microcode was downgraded as well when I downgraded the BIOS. - I have run the "Intel® Processor Diagnostic Tool": I was afraid that the high temperatures may have damaged the cpu. The tool reported that the maximum temperature of the cpu during the benchmark was always safely within the expected threshold and all the tests were passed. Now, I still can see that the fan kicks in much more often than usual. I have noticed, using sensors under Ubuntu 15.10, that every time there is a very short burst/peak of... Read more

Yesterday I installed the firmware update for the 20BS Carbon X1 2015 and ran into a number of issues: 1) The BCD Store for the Windows Boot Manager is corrupted causing BitLocker to fail with "System cannot find the path specified" error on the last step trying to enable Bitlocker. Resuming BitLocker on an existing drive fails too. Tried a number of things already to fix it, but so far haven't found any solution except to turn off bitlocker drive encryption (Windows 8.1 Pro) Any hints towards sovind this are helpful. Reinstalling the update recreated the same problem. For now, I've simply hidden the update, to avoid the issue, but I wonder if anyone else has had this issue or whether this issue is specific to my machine, purchased in early Sept -- obviously before the update referred to above.

Answer:X1 Carbon screen blacks out w/ graphics driver update

Hey there mcvan2012,

I am uncertain of why that specific update would cause the symptom for you. However, there is a driver update for the Intel HD Graphics 4000 via lenovo's support site. This is version 9.17.10.2843, and was released on Dec 7, 2012. Thought this may help to bypass that other update altogether.

You can find the driver here.

Hope this removes the issue altogether, Good Luck and let me know how it goes.

Hello, I just recently performed the 26-Jul BIOS update to 1.14, for my Thinkpad Carbon X1 (20BS) with windows 10.The update went ok, but afterwards, Windows is crashing when booting. Using a bootable Windows 10 installation disk also crashes when booting. The recovery environment also crashes when booting. Using detailed logs, it seems to crash when activating the ACPI microcontroller. I would assume that has something to do with the UEFI update, that I have disabled in the BIOS. Enabling it does not recognise the disk, as it is not a GPT partition. I tried to rollback the BIOS, but it does not allow it.  Do you have any suggestion on how to proceeed? Thanks,Pedro

My motherboard died on my X1 Carbon Gen 1.  I sent it to lenovo and the repair estimate was ~$750.  I decided to replace it myself but the part for my system FRU 04X0495 (W8P,i7-3667U,8G,F,AMT,TPM,MT) new are quite expensive.  I found a new systemboard FRU 04Y1988 (W8P,i7-3667U,8G,F,AMT,TPM) at a much more reasonable price and installed that.  I now have a working machine (new machine type 3448-3Y2) but no touchscreen (I assume the MT stands for touch monitor or something).Question, and I think I know the answer, Is there any way to convert or add to my new systemboard the touch screen capability?  I assume it is not just the driver?thanks,

Hi, I bought my Carbon Touch looking forward to activating with Verizon and replacing my current 3g ipad.  After hours trying to figure out how to enable broadband, I find out that apparently the "touch" models don't offer it.  Can someone at Lenovo explain how they can have promotional materials like the page at http://www.lenovo.com/products/us/laptop/thinkpad/x-series/x1-carbon-touch/ that says "ThinkPad X1 Carbon Touch" and "Embedded 3G Connectivity" while not offering it at all? Then, I thought I'd return the Touch and get the regular Carbon, but I'm seeing now that, despite all of the reviews and promo materials that say otherwise, it doesn't support Verizon either.  How can this be true?  Just about every review that I read about these laptops is flat wrong on these topics.  What's the scoop? I tried calling technical support a couple of times and they were of no help.

Answer:X1 Carbon Touch WWAN (Carbon does not support Verizon and Carbon Touch has no 3G at all)

jprny,

Welcome to the Support Forums! I can definitely understand your confusion and I know you must be frustrated. I can clarify that the WWAN is optional in the X1 Carbon, from the same link you provided you can open the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Touch Ultrabook Specs it states there is Optional 3G WWAN.

Here is the the X1 Carbon Personal Systems Reference (You will find the X1 Carbon Touch on the very bottom)
This shows the different models of the X1 Carbon and what specifications are included. Unfortunately, I only see AT&T as the 3G provider on the standard models. From the Parts List it looks like there are other options to choose from that would make it a configured to order machine. You may want to contact Verizon to see if any of the WWAN cards work with their network.

I would recommend contacting the after sales team:

I really do understand your frustration, I hope you found this helpful.

Last night there was an update from Windows that I didn't request and when it was completed there was a message on my screen that everything was the same as it had been before. The message stayed there so I assumed it was still doing something, so I left it and went to bed. This  morning it wasn't acting normal, so I ran a scan to make sure everything was ok. It said it was. About 10 minutes later the screen went black. It's still on because I can hear when emails come in, but there's nothing on the screen. I've done control/alt/delete a few times but nothing happens.  Everything I need to work on is on the desktop. I'm new to this laptop (got it for Christmas) so I don't know everything about it yet. My questions:1. Could I have done something to turn off the screen? If so, how do I get it back on?2. If I can't get it on, is there a way to get my documents off it?Help! Thanks,Nancy

Answer:New X1 Carbon screen is black after Windows 10 update (not upgrade) last night

you could try closing lid and let it go to sleep then open the lid and see if display lights up again but before you do anything of this get a torch or any kind of lamp/light aimt it on screen and look closley if it's clear black/grey screen is off but if it still display a picture in dark display then backlight is glitched out or broken so then try first thing i mention if laptop screen still remains black then try pressing brightness buttons if wont work do fn + keys for backlight for screen and see if anything happens

As subject title, did a recent Lenovo "System Update" on BIOS and other drivers, and since then sleep and hibernate no longer works, when i close the lid, it turns on by itself after 2 seconds. When i select Sleep or Hibernate in Windows 8.1 with lid open, it just behaves like a Restart command. Need this fixed! Any ideas?

Hi all,I recently restored my X1 Carbon (4th Gen, type 20FB, Windows 10 home) to factory setting. After the resetting I found that the brightness control didn't work and I could not adjust brightness, so I went to update the Intel HD Graphics 520 driver, and black screen occured right after the update was installed. Now I'm using my laptop with the graphics driver disabled, and I still can't adjust brightness. Any thoughts? Any engineer plz check it!

Anyone else seeing this?  I'm connected to a Onlink Pro dock.  After upgrading to the latest BIOS version I am no longer able to put the system to sleep by closing the laptop.  The monitors connected to my dock continue to display and the laptop does not enter sleep mode.

After updating the BIOS to 1.13 the X1 refuses to boot . After several attempts to diagnose the problem (trying to boot under legacy and uefi with various rescue pen drives) I doing a restore with the recovery media (created using the inbuilt software) but that didn't help, it just wiped my partitions and reinstalled windows (I'm assuming since I have no way to check at this point) but still refuses to boot. I can boot the windows rescue thumb drive under legacy though. After the update the screen was also corrupted, picture here http://i.imgur.com/ScfD1Uz.jpg.At this point I'm not sure what to do anymore, it seems that the BIOS update failed in some way or somehow broke something.

Answer:X1 carbon 20A7 won't boot after 1.13 BIOS update, ecreen also corrupted.

this seems to have caused uneven lighting in the LED display, very strange problem. You may need to get warranty service on it.

Beware! if you have bitlocker enabled on your C drive and do an Firmware update on your X1 Carbon make sure you have stored the recovery key. After doing the Firmware update Windows no longer unlocks the drive automatically, it will require the 8*6 number recovery key. If you did not save or have lost your key you no longer have access to your data.

Answer:Warning Bitlocker key lost after update Firmware X1 Carbon 20A8

That is quite normal. Any change to configuration/hardware will make bitlocker prompt for recovery key.

My attempts to update the firmware on Ericsson H5321 gw fail with the following message:    This version of the Mobile Broadband Updater does not support your device [303]. I did disable the radios for the firmware update using the hardware switch. The card works fine on Windows 7 (to which I downgraded to check if it's okay). I'm now planning to perform an in-place upgrade to Windows 8 and try updating firmware from there. The machine did not originally include the WWAN module and came with Win8 preinstalled. I confess I bought the card off ebay, however, I had first checked if it is supported. A doc named "Upgrading the Ericsson H5321 mobile broadband mini-card firmware for Windows 8" in the Solutions section and the readme file for the firmware updater both mention my machine and the card model as compatible. Can anyone suggest where do I go from here? I would certainly like to move to Windows 8 for the touch functionality.

Answer:H5321 gw WWAN Card Firmware Update Fails on X1 Carbon 34xx

Eventually I managed to get the WWAN card working by installing it on Windows 7 and then upgrading the OS in-place, first to Win8 and then 8.1. Firmware update was not successful though, neither under Win8 nor under Win8.1, with the error given in the previous message. The details are as follows. Card specs:Model: Ericsson H5321 GWFRU: 60Y3297Product Number: KRD 131 21/821Revision: R1G/1FW Product: CXC 173 1944/1FW Version: R1C08FW Build Date/Time: Oct 1 2011 18:09:28 Machine specs:ThinkPad X1 Carbon Type 34xx (May 2014)BIOS G6ETA7WW (2.67)Windows 8 Pro preinstalled The steps:1. Install Win7.2. Install the card drivers for Win7 from Lenovo Downloads.3. Run Windows Update: another H5321 GW version was pulled and installed from WU. Not sure if it's essential.4. Upgrade to Win8 and run Windows Update twice to satisfy the requirements for the subsequent 8.1 upgrade.5. Upgrade to 8.1 from the Store.

A few days ago I was prompted to install an urgent BIOS update.  I followed the screen prompts and the system rebooted and flashed the BIOS.  Our company laptops all have Sophos encryption, which requires a separate login prior to booting the OS (Win7).  I've always been able to enter user ID and password information on that screen using the USB keyboard connected to my OneLink+ dock (which is connected to the laptop). Following this BIOS update, I can no longer use the keyboard or mouse (also USB) connected to the OneLink+ dock until the OS boots.  I have to open my laptop, enter my Sophos ID and password on the laptop keyboard, then close the laptop.  Once the OS (Win7) boots, I can use both the USB devices fine.  Interestingly enough, the monitor attached to the OneLink+ dock functions just fine before the OS boots up. I checked BIOS settings and couldn't see anything there that looked odd or out of place.  I also checed Device Manager to see if there were any warnings or issues, and didn't see anything. I tried to downgrade the BIOS to an earlier version, but once you are above 1.23 that is not possible.  I did flash to the latest release - 1.27 - but that did not fix the issue. So I'm stuck with a rather awkward login process which was not an issue until this BIOS version was installed a few days ago.  I've reviewed other post for similar issues but have not found anything that points at a solution thus far... Hi, I installed the BIOS/UEFI update to version 2.03. Secure Boot was enabled in UEFI but is reported not working in Windows 8 RTM. Update: The UEFI secure boot settings have to be changed. To really enable it you have to manually load factory keys in setup. Regards,-Jan
