Compressed program files, windows will only work in safe mode

Question: Compressed program files, windows will only work in safe mode

Greetings my future hero,
I have recently compressed the Program Files(x86) folder(to save disk space). After the relog, I got the message "The User Profile Service failed the logon.User profile cannot be loaded.",which doesn't seem to get fixed by removing the ''.BAK' from the regedit folder(I also need to mention that I only had the .bak file, not 2 separate folders like I had seen in the tutorials)
Does anybody have any idea how to fix this?

Thank you in advance,Potasiu
ps:I tried a system restore from the Command Prompt, but it tells me that I don't have a restore point on the computer.

Preferred Solution: Compressed program files, windows will only work in safe mode

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello.I have reached the conclusion that I need to format my laptop: acer travelmate 2414wlmi.and reinstall windows xp, however I am not sure if this is possible as the os does not load in either normal mode or safe mode.I picked up a virus a few days ago that redirected me repeatedly to *Blocked Russian URL*, a problem I've seen that others have had. But now that I have access to an external hard drive to save my work, windows does not get past the welcome screen in normal mode, and is only usable for about a second in safe mode. Is there anything I can do to save my work?Any help would be great. ThanksEd

Answer:Windows does not load in safe mode or normal mode. Need to save work and format.

Depending on the type of hard drive you have you can use one of these adapters to connect to a friends computer and get your data off.  If you do make sure your friend runs a scan on your drive before removing any data.Good luck!Alan <><  [attachment deleted by admin]

After upgrading to SP2 about a month ago so I could take finals on my computer at school, i noticed that my computer wouldn't boot up in safe mode (i just get a blank dark screen and i can hear the computer doing something but giving it a reasonable amount of time it doesn't progress from that screen). It didn't concern me because normal mode was working and i was able to take my tests. But now I want to get to the bottom of this. I delayed getting sp2 because i had a feeling it would mess up my computer. (i've had other problems too with visual skins but i was able to resolve those). If it matters, i ran a scan of my system with spyware doctor and it said i had a trojan.dialer and needed to boot in safemode to get rid of it. When I tried, it wouldn't load. Oh, btw, any way to get rid of that trojan.dialer without using safemode?

Answer:Windows Xp Home, After Sp2, Safe Mode Doesn't Work, Normal Mode's Fine?

Try running Ewido online scan and post the results overhere.

I turned on my pc one morning and it froze will booting into windows 7. I booted into safe mode with networking and then tried rebooting normally but still had the same problem.
I?ve done a full restore with a windows installation disk but that froze at the ?installing updates? stage. I?ve also done an image restore with Macrium Reflect but that too freezes while windows boots up. I?ve done all the suggested fixes with the windows 7 WinRE and tried restoring the MBR.
The RAM is ok and tried a new hard drive but windows still freezes, changed pc battery and all USB?s are out.
Has anyone got any ideas as I am now out of them? Please help.
Thanks

Answer:Need help – windows 7 will only work in safe mode

If its still under Warranty, I suggest you return it. It sounds like a Bad Hard Drive

Hi.

I have a HP dx2400 PC, Intel Core 2 duo E7400 processor, 3.25GB ram, running XPSP3.

Until yesterday it appeared to be working perfectly. I installed nothing yesterday and noticed no unusual behaviour. When I booted up this morning the CAD drawing package that I use daily would not start and gave an error message saying that it could not find its security dongle. I tried to run Firefox, this started and then immediately froze, locking the pc so I had to restart from the power button. The same happens with Thunderbird and any other exe files I try. When I look in explorer at 'My Computer' I just get the egg timer and it will not show any files.

Everything works fine in safe mode, except the CAD software, however this uses a serial dongle on an expansion card so it may not work in safe mode anyway.

In safe mode I ran Malwarebytes and it found certain items which were removed. This made no difference. I have run full scans with stinger, spybot S&D and Avast antivirus, all report no errors.

I use the CAD software as a self employed designer so i am pretty desparate to get it up and running again. I would appreciate any help or advice please!!

Many thanks in advance,
Andy.

Answer:Windows XP programs will only work in safe mode

Okay, I have just been into MSCONFIG (in safe mode) and set it to Diagnostic Start Up and everything works fine in normal mode!!!

So I guess it is one of the 'turned off' startup items that is causing the problem.........

I'll try turning them on, one by one and restarting.

EDIT:-

It is not related to startup items, but is definitely related to Services. If I enable all services the problem is there, if I disable all services the problem is gone............

I'm tearing my hair out with this one. Suddenly, and for no apparent reason that I can see, Windows 7 won't load at all. Everything was working fine until today.

When Windows looks like it is starting, the "Windows is loading files..." message comes up. It then goes into Startup Repair, which either can't detect problem or "Startup Repair cannot repair this computer automatically". I have tried pressing F8 for the safe mode menu, but none of the options there work either as selecting any of them just ends up in Startup Repair again. Sadly I have no system restore point or system image to reload. I have run the Windows Memory Diagnostic, which found no problems. I know that reloading Windows is almost certain to fix this problem, but I have a handful of files that I really, really don't want to lose by doing this. Is there any way that I can save my files??

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Answer:Windows won't open; safe mode won't work

I would think that a check of the hard drive itself would be in order...as for saving files, you can remove the hard drive and attach it to a different system as a secondary drive...and then move data files (not programs) to another partition/drive or removeable media.

I am hoping someone here can help me with this...A couple of days ago, I attempted to install an expansion pack for Sims2. It advised me to back up my game files, so I tried to, but I tried to put them in a zip file on a cd, came back an hour later and it was still copying.  I assumed it must be stuck, cancelled out of it, and just tucked the zip file away on the hard drive instead.  I then tried to proceed with the installation, and opened a web browser so I could read email while waiting. After a couple of minutes nothing was happening, and I shut off the computer. Now, when Windows starts, I will get the XP logo followed by a blank screen.  The hard drive stops shortly after the blank screen appears. I turn the power off, turn it back on, then I will get the list of options for starting the computer.  The only options that work are the safe mode options.  I get nothing from starting normally or using the last good configuration.  Using safe mode, I have attempted to system restore to an earlier point, but it doesn't seem to make a difference. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can fix this? I tried the Microsoft support page but it was useless. Any help would be appreciated.Thank you.

Boot into safemode....go to Start/Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter.Have your Windows XP CD handy as it will ask for it.

When I boot the computer will sometimes freeze and stutter and it will always fail to open anything at all from Firefox to even just Notepad and such. From googling around and checking it out myself most answers point to Malware but I have tried a multitide of Scans and fixes suggested to me and none have managed to fix the problem at all, I'm beginning to think perhaps Malware is not the cause of the issue at all, I really have no idea. Booting in Safe Mode with networking has allowed me to come here and ask for help just fine. Does anyone know what could be causing the issue and what I could do to find and fix the problem?

Hello!

hope someone can help,

I dont know much at all about computer so I hope you will understand what I am saying!

My PC is dell inspiron 1525. My battery was dying and my pc shut down before I could plug it in. When I tried to restart I got the annoying dell media center screen (I have trouble with this from the beggining, sometimes I cant get out and have to shut down the pc and restart)
and straight away the blue screen with the following message

Plug and play detected an error most likely caused by a faulty driver... etc

I pressed F8 as indicated but safe mode wont work

the error code is
0X000000CA (0X00000001, 0X82FD5620, 0X82FDOA68, 0X00000000)

The day it happened, I have dowloaded Divx and Jdowlnoader
I also have plugged in my HDMi cable from my Tv to watch a film.

can someone help!

thanks a lot

Answer:BSOD and safe mode won't work. Windows XP Home

0xCA: PNP_DETECTED_FATAL_ERROR
This indicates that the Plug and Play Manager encountered a severe error, probably as a result of a flawed Plug and Play driver.

What driver does it list on the Blue Screen? It will be under the error code.

So after (4) years with apparently too much time on my hands, I decide to update some 35-40 drivers -- thinking maybe, response time will improve.  I go to the Sony site and down load all the recommended drivers for my machine.  VGC-RA940GFollowing directions, I pretty much restart after each download.  The last driver I download, I restart and to my shere surprise, the machine doesnt!  (Restart, that is.)It hangs -- the Windows screen appears and thats it --- 5, 10, 30 minutes later its still there. So I restart, (Saying to myself, I can handle this.) I press f5 and get the safe mode screen.  I choose evey option available, and each one hangs; "Safe mode," "safe mode with networking" and "command prompt' scroll a screen of files then hangs right after the ____*.mup file.   "Last known configuration" brings me back to a hanging Windows screen as does "start windows normally." At this point I am getting a bit panicy.  Although I have an external hard drive, none of my data is backed up. (thump on the head) I start hitting any function key that wont give me the insideous safe mode screen and f10 gives me a "restore" with a warning telling me that all my #$%^ data will go away if I continue. (I am paraphrasing, as you may have guessed.) so I quietly and promplty exit that screen.I call Sony technical support (and begrudgingly pay my 29.99) and, what do you know, after doing eveyth... Answer:Windows hangs -safe mode options do not work --

You didn't need to buy the recovery disk. When you press F10 at boot up, you access your recovery partition, which will restore your computer back to factory settings. That's what all of that-You will loose all of your #@&^$ data- was about. You can place your hard drive in another computer in the slave position and recover all of your data. Then you can just put the drive back into your machine and press F10 at boot up to revert back to factory settings. That will format your hard drive and give you a new start. If you have an IDE hard drive you will want to give this tutorial a look.http://www.dtidata.com/resourcecenter/2007/04/23/how-to-slave-hard-drive/

I'm wondering if this is a virus problem and its preventing connection in windows. The IP address is aquired correctly and everything looks good but the internet just won't work. I checked all settings and it seems to be fine. When I go into Safe Mode with networking, it works. I'm using housecall now to scan for viruses but no luck yet. Any idea on what might be causing this? Thanks.

BTW, Its a dell running Windows XP Home SP2. When I tried "repairing" the connection, it gives me an error saying it can't clear the DNS cache. It does this in safe mode as well.

I have a Toshiba Satellite L300-1AS laptop and have got windows vista home premium service pack 1. I have recently had trouble with my computer when it restarts, it will load up to the point just before you have to input your password and then will come up with an error message saying 'Windows visual studio c++ 2005 has requested to be terminated in an unusual way' and then won't load any further. For some reason it seems to be linked to when i updated my iTunes when the version before the current one came out as I have tried loading it up in safe mode and for a while i managed to get my computer to work by system restoring it to a point before I updated iTunes. This was fine for a week or so but now the system restore doesn't go back far enough and so doesn't work, however i have not reinstalled iTunes since. I'm pretty stumped as to what else to try so I was wondering if anyone else has ever had a similar problem? Thanks

(sorry for the long post, but it's all relevant to the problem)

Okay, here's the deal: Two nights ago i was incredibly bored and I
downloaded an old DOS VGA version of The Oregon Trail from the-underdogs. I used VDMsound to run it, and everything seemed to work alright until i got sick of the game and tried to quit. It locked up, i used ctrl-alt-del a few times, got impatient and stupidly switched off the computer just as i was being dumped back to windows. When i turned the computer back on, i was given the "safe mode" prompt, so i chose to start in safe mode. It then showed that list of system files(?) it was loading until it gets to "d347bus.sys" and asks if i want to press escape to skip loading it. Regardless of whether i press esc or not, it moves on to "SPTD.sys" and asks the same question. After i press escape (or not), i get a black screen, then the computer restarts again back to the safe mode prompt. If i try to "start windows normally" i get to the Windows XP loading screen, the progress bar moves a bit then the whole thing restarts again.

Later, i tried repeatedly pressing F8 at startup and accessed a different safe mode menu with more options. When i chose to start windows normally, it gave me the option to start the Recovery Console, so i did. However, all i got was a blue screen with the following error messages:

UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

Hi disinfestator, welcome to TSF.

Do you have the Windows XP CD?

Place the CD in the CD-Rom and reboot the PC, to boot off the XP CD.
XP will present a screen for installing or setting up Windows XP. Choose 'R' for Recovery Console.

The Recovery Console Command Prompt will load. Type the following:

chkdsk /r
allow Check Disk to complete.
next
fixboot
next
fixmbr

Remove the XP CD and reboot.

Does Windows load?

How can I get it so my mouse and keyboard work in windows, safe mode, and the bios without denigrating the performance of my 20 3-8 TB USB 3.0 HD. I've seen out there that the performance of these devices is increased by disabling USB Legacy USB Support"

For example "Disable Legacy USB Support unless you need to use a USB keyboard in DOS, OS/2, or Linux"

However when I do disable Legacy USB support my USB mouse and keyboard don't work in safe mode at all.

Now, I did find an old post from 6 years ago recommending FRST, which I was able to run on my "Dead7". But now I'm not sure what to do because that thread went in a different direction than my issue. I do have the file FRST produced, but that's as far as I can go.

Can somebody PLEASE PLEASE ( i know, i'm begging...lol) help with this? This is not an "online" pc as I only use it for music, although it has been online recently but that was only for drivers..

I appreciate any and all comments and help..

Thank You...

Answer:Windows 7 won't boot, not even safe mode and repair doesn't work either

FRST is a tool used with malware situations...which is why it's not allowed or used in this forum.  We do not address malware issues.

If you want to post your FRST log in the proper forum because you suspect malware...then please post it in the Malware Removal Logs forum (link is in my signature).

The only useful data which you have provided thus far...is that your system won't boot.  There can be any number of reasons for this, ranging from hardware to O/S to malware issues.

If it were me...I would check the obvious suspect, the hard drive itself, by running the long generic test of SeaTools for Windows on said hard drive.  If nothing else, that should help eliminate something from consideration.

Thank you in advance for any help you can provide. I have an HP laptop dv9428nr with windows vista. Yesterday i was surfing and trend micro seemed to find something but i clicked the wrong button and dont think i prevented it from loading into my computer. After i rebooted that day i could no longer access the internet via IE of Firefox. I verified it was not an issue with my cable modem or router. When i am in safe mode with internet connection i can access the web (as i am doing now) but as soon as i boot normally i get the message that IE cant connect. I have downloaded and installed multiple applications that i have seen posted about in the forums and they each provide different results and then want a fee to remove the trojan. I now have spyware doctor, superanitspy, webroot antivirus, ccleaner, and registry mechanic and followed the directions for all but have not had any success even though some of them say i sucessfully cleaned the machine. One application stated i had Clicker.vb, Rootkit.tdss another found acnxoswmcr.exe adn mewmacsexo.exe (may be an N), and a host of other items.I was told to download and run hijackthis and post the log here for assistance. Please note that i am very new to anything technical and any step by step instructions would be most appreciated. NOTE - task manager is also disabled so is add remove programs.UPDATE: I posted this in the wrong forum and was given the directions to how do update the post correctly. I was able to run the requested... Read more

Soooooo,
i go to my friends today and shes starting up her windows and as soon as it starts the bar at the bottom i believe called explorer and all the desktop icons dissapear, all that works is the task manager.
Anyways, so we tried again and then i ran it in safe mode which worked till it actually tried running windows and there is that popup that i believe asks about restore point dissapears in a split second and then nothing loads.
So then i try a different safemode. same problem.
so then we restarted windows and then spy weep hada notification of infected computer. So we ran it and she said it froze last time it ran but this time it did so then it "quarentined" all the problems on the computer.
so then we restarted without internet, which had the explorer and desktop icons back. so i started up the web browsers up i needed and i got a few popups from spysweeper that things were trying to access the internet. some RUNDLL tried running and it was c:\windows\system32\asabmgev.dll.
so then we plugged the internet back in, the explorer disspeared and desktop items but i still had my browsers so i got on here. now we don't know what to do since we cant acess anything on the computer like this. also some weird processes are running on here if anyone knows what they are some dissapear after a second of popping up.
so there is ycommon.exe, hpqimzone.exe, motiveSB.exe, wuaudt.exe, vVX3000.exe, PCLient.exe, ehtray.exe, hpqimzone.exe, and all this othe... Read more

Machine was working but for some reason all of my icons were gone. I got it to allow me to install chrome. That icon stayed. But I had nothing else showing. I could shut down and reboot. Just all of my stuff was gone. Now it just hangs at the windows logo and never goes past that. I can get to the repair program though. Safe mode just hangs at the windows logo too.

I appreciate any help.

OK, so I got some kind of malware/virus where i kept getting the same "important security alert" pop-up every time I clicked on something. So, I ran a system restore thinking that it would take care of it. Well, it didnt. On top of that, after I completed the system restore, my internet browsers now only work in safe mode. I definitely have an internet connection and when I try to run the automatic troubleshooting it says there is nothing wrong with the connection. After that, I downloaded Super AV and malwarebytes and ran them. They found a ton of stuff and I got rid of it. Still, my internet browsers would only work in safe mode. So, I looked on this forum and read about a clean startup. So i used msconfig, hid all the microsoft processes and disabled all the remaining applications. Still, no internet browser. Then, I read having two anti virus applications can cause this problem. So, I uninstalled my Norton 360 that had long since expired. Nothing. Uninstalled Super AV and malwarebytes. Still nothing. I have no idea what it could be. If someone could give me some guidance I would really appreciate it. Ive surfed every forum I could find and tried everything that my level of computer expertise allowed. Now Im at the point that I don't want to screw anything up.

I shut off my computer earlier today and when I tried to turn it back on, it will not load beyond the blue login screen. I've tried starting it in safe mode but again, it won't go beyond the blue login screen. I've tried repairing it and it says that there is no problem. When I try to run the command prompt, it says hat it can not complete the task because a system repair is in process. Please help me, I have important files om there for clients.

Answer:Windows 7 won't boot, startup repair won't work, can't go into safe mode.

Welcome MahLiiSah

Sounds like you are in a rush and that you have an installation/repair disc.

I suggest you just boot to that and try running System Restore to a previous point (you will not lose any files, just perhaps a program or two you installed recently).

My son's HP laptop was giving him a strange message that he must pay $300 to the FBI and then would go to a black screen. I guessed that he had gotten a virus. A few days later I tried to get into safe mode to do a system restore, but all 3 options of safe mode take me to the windows login screen, and his password no longer works. Also, in looking for answers, I found others who were having the pc hang while loading classpnp. I did notice that this is also occurring just before it goes to the windows login screen.

Many of the suggestions I have found for fixing errors require you to either be logged in or in safe mode, which is not possible. My son's father bought him the laptop, so I don't know if there was ever an installation disk. I believe it came with windows 7 pre-installed. It was purchased new about a year ago. My son does not want me to wipe the hard drive or do anything to lose his music, games, etc., but I don't know if that is possible

At first I thought I just needed to know how to reset the windows password, but at this point, I think the problem is beyond my capability to figure out on my own.

Has anyone else heard of a similar issue and how to repair it with or without losing all of the data?

Answer:Windows 7 problems: cannot enter safe mode, windows password does not work

Hello,

Funnily enough I have just finished repairing a computer with this issue. What I did was a fresh install of windows 7. With the recovery disk.

Do you have the model number please?

Its not a good idea to put your email adress in forums, id suggest removing it. but sometimes window run & window openWhen you boot successfully try to run a check diskMy computer >. right click C:\ >> properties >> Tools >> check nowAlso try to disable startup items that do not need to be running at at startupStart >> Run >> Type Msconfig >> click on Start Up tab >> uncheck items you do not need to run with windows.if the OS requires a repair then this canot be achieved without the correct windows disk.

New Computer, I have a MacBookPro laptop with Dual OS - Leopard on Mac and Windows XP Professional, well two months of trying to get Windows to opperate correctly. Unbelievable! I've re-installed XP SP2 too many times to count, finally had it up and thought it was running fine for the last week, then I went over to the Mac OS tried accessing windows through boot camp, it shut down the Mac OS, then when I tried to go back to boot windows directly, I received the damning <windows root> \system32\hal.dll file is missing or corrupt - again.

I've gone through a bunch of posts, tried a number of the instructions, and now have a worse issue, my computer is now stuck at the User Log in Page in safe mode with Windows, I'd disabled everything for start up in Configuration Utility and "checked" start up in safe mode there too, so now I can't get it out of it, and since my mouse and keyboard won't opperate in safe mode, I get to the log in page to select user but the mouse just won't move and pressing "CTRL +ALT+DLT" no response.

In the Recovery Counsole when I rean CHKDSK /r this is what it came back with...
"The volume appears to contain or or more unrecoverable problems."
97638572 kilobytes total disk space.
90877508 kilobytes are available.

406 bytes in each allocation unit.

Answer:Help?? Windows Stuck in Safe Mode on Log on Page - mouse won't work - need my data...

You are going to need 'professional' assistance, from a good (damn good) PC/Mac shop, or a data recovery company.

Despite the fact you can install XP on that Mac, 98% of PC shops will turn you away and tell you to go to a Mac authorised dealer ... shame on them, cos they may actually be able to help, if they know how.

I would put your hard drive in to a PC, as a slave drive, and use something like Spinrite to "try" and recover your data.

What may have happened is, the Mac & Windows partitions have cross-corrupted one another hence the error message. A little hard to explain.

Data recovery ain't cheap, and none will guarantee any success, how valuable is your data?

Sorry I can't help with a quick fix.

Is my hard drive dead? Here's what I've already tried:
Chkdsk /r (which did find some bad files)
Startup repair (which did not identify the issue)
Starting in safe mode - result was a partial start with list of drivers, then a blank screen
System restore to earlier date - tells me there is no restore point (?!)
Can't reinstall Vista bc I no longer have the cd
Fortunately, I have Carbonite, so probably haven't lost any important files. Before I head for the Apple store, I thought I'd see if anyone has additional ideas to get this PC to boot?
Thanks in advance, Rachel

Hi!

A few days ago, when I turned on my laptop, it said "Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause." I tried solving the problem via installation disc and Repair your computer, but Startup repair doesn't seem to do anything (ran it twice), System restore can't find a point from which to restore and Refresh your PC also doesn't do anything. By the way, every operation in Repair your computer takes really long, about one or two hours.

Also, I can't get into safe mode as pressing the f8 (or f5) button ends in beeping and command prompt starts with x:\sources instead of c:\windows so safeboot minimal/network doesn't work.

I've also tried using explorer.exe to copy the most urgent files to usb flash drive but it doesn't show the files from c:.

Any ideas?

Thanks and best regards.

Hello. This is my first post.
One day I was using my computer and a windows update notification popped up saying windows has updated what would you like to do and yo have 4 minutes until the computer will restart. I said restart later. Then I went away from my pc and it restarted because that popped up while I was away and I was away for more than 4 minutes. It restarted and now I have this menu that says windows has dected a problem with software or hardware what would you like to do. I first selected start windows normal The computer restarted and I did not see any of the windows boot screen. I chose safe mode It also restarted as well. I brought the pc as a HP pavillion but I upgraded the mother board, cpu and case so the recovery cd is useless and I also don't want to reinstall windows becasue I will lose lots of data and I have lost all of my backup dvd's. I have also found a windows xp cd but it is already installed on one pc. could I do this change the product key when it asks for it to the product key, I do not want to breach the Microsoft eula.
I think the only way to fix it is to boot to a linux live cd and send all my data by ftp to another pc on my home network but that might take a long time to send gigabytes of data over a 54 mbps wifi network. Then reinstall windows useing if I can somehow. I do not want to have to buy another windows xp cd.
bye

I was surfing the web last night and all of a sudden, the computer restarted. I walked away to get a drink of water, and when I came back, it was still restarting and it continued this over and over again.

I watched it go through the process and when it gets to the screen where it asks you to select Start Normally, Use Safe Mode, etc., the default is Start Normally. So I tried to select Safe Mode, but found that the keyboard doesn't work. This is odd, because the keyboard is fairly new and had been working just fine. Also, during one of the restarts, I entered the BIOS setup and the keyboard works fine there, but once I exit the BIOS setup, it stops working.

Any thoughts? Is it a Windows keyboard driver that is corrupt or something?

Windows XP PRO SP3 (WinNT 5.01.2600)
Hi
I need help and fast, within next two hours if it's possible. I'm doing something for printing and editing a film for friend, for his Academy.
I have a deadline. And I'm near brain meltdown, i've lost whole day trying to fix this.

I've installed SpeedUp MyPC and Driver scanner and did a driver backup then update. Before that i made Restore Point, and Tune Up Utillities did one automatically. There were 4 updates, for Graphics, Usb, Sound and I think Motherboard ( ATI, Nvdia).
I have backups of those still, so I can post the list.
During installation there was one error but it seemed ralated to some Thumbs.db file so I didn't really look into it (some error , zero something, sorry don't remember).
At second installation there was the prompt to restart to finish the installation after restart, that i didn't do. But the Driver scanner window said that the installation was finished,. I finished all 4 and restarted. Never got to Loggon screen, just went black, and nothing.
I've tried all kinds of Safe mode but it comes to Loggon and mouse and keyboard don't work.
Nothing does.
Reformat is not really an option.

Please help!!!!!!!!
Thanks.

Please do not post your Hijack this logs here. Due to Forum Rules we cannot assist in malware removal here. Have you tried a different browser (Chrome, Firefox etc)? When you say IE only works in Safe Mode with Networking, Do you mean you boot the computer normally and use IE (safe mode) or are you booting the computer into Safe Mode with Networking? In other words you can't boot normally?

I have tried to run IE7 in normal mode and I always get a "The address is not valid" window. I have a good internet connection and Firefox works flawlessly. I do not have connection problems. If I ran IE7 in Safe Mode with Networking, I can bring up webpages with no problems. I thought that upgrading to IE8 would cure the problem but I am still getting the exact same problem. I have tried checking many things and have tried many suggestions that I have found through web searches but nothing works. Please help!

Hi!

My 4-year old Gateway laptop (running Windows Vista Home Premium) just froze last night. Tried restarting it, and every time I get to the Windows icon I get a frozen mouse on the login screen or a blank screen. Sometimes, it makes a sound like someone is pressing one key on the keyboard with the Windows icon in the background. When I shut down and restart in safe mode, I am able to use both mouse and keypad. I am able to login in safe mode and safe mode with command prompt, but not safe mode with networking (same result as starting in normal mode).

I have used the install cd, and tried all of the options on the repair menu. Nothing has helped - neither startup repair, nor system restore. No memory errors were detected, either.

Acc. to the system restore menu, the last windows update was early last week (and I have been to use the computer without any issues until late last night). Also, I have McAfee AV, and it ran without detecting any issues 24-hours before the problems began.

Any ideas on what I should try to fix this problem, other than reformating the harddisk? I am not very tech-savvy, so if you want more info, I'd appreciate you walking me through the process. Thanks in advance.

Answer:Mouse and keypad frozen in normal mode, but work in safe mode

Hi Horan. Welcome to TSF!

Since you are able to boot into SAFE MODE with COMMAND PROMPT, do that and then at the prompt type "sfc /scannow" (without the quotation marks) and let it run. After it completes that, make a note of any messages and then reboot your system and see if that helps.

Also, what happens when you just use the touchpad and don't plug in a mouse? Any difference or does it still lock up?

Good day!

Mike

I just recovered from accidentally disabling my display adapter (*****). I logged into linux to get on the net and found the thread solved by Spike and also by glowingnissan07 on this issue and found that neither of these threads solved the problem exactly. Spikes solution finally ended up working with one change and I thought I would post it here in case anyone else had the same gut wrenching experience (thanks Microsoft).

Phenomena: accidentally disabled the display adapter and after the XP loading screen you get nothing. Dead monitor. Safe mode hangs each time and "VGA Mode" does nothing different.

Solution: Here is Spikes original solution (thanks Spike) with a note for step 5. Also beware of "found new hardware" wizard etc popping up at system startup interfereing with these instructions. I recommend pressing alt-f4 a few times after startup to make sure any startup programs get closed and then doing these instructions. Good Luck.

Log in. If you log in automatically, all well and good. if not...

1, use the up and down arrow keys to go to your user, and hit enter to select. if you normally have to enter a password, then do it now, and hit enter again.

2, press and hold the windows key, and tap 'R' (this is the keyboard shortcut to the run box)

3, type "devmgmt.msc" (without the quotes) and hit Enter (this opens device manager)

4, wait a few moments to make sure device manager is open, and then hit the TAB... Read more

Not sure what I have stumbled upon here. Was trying to download some music from SugarSync that I had from another PC, realized I did not have a music player installed and tried to download VLC and that's when things went bad.

I had run my Anti-Virus (Avast ) and it found nothing,
I just now opened it (in safe mode) to obtain the official name/version and found it to display a large red banner declaring I am unprotected and the Avast service turned off.
None of those controls on that panel work

Am assuming some infection did this as I did not turn it off!
When I clicked Scan it displays "Unable to start scan. There are no more endpoints available from the endpoint mapper"

This is an Asus G73JW Laptop
Windows 7 SP1
I use
Avast Internet Security
Spybot S&D
CCleaner

Any Idea as to what I have run into here?

Thanks,

Answer:Fine in Safe mode, but in normal mode, icons and Startmenu don't work

Have you performed a System Restore recently?

Download your version of Avast, but don't install it yet.

With the computer offline use the Avast uninstall utility to uninstall your current installation.

Once you have uninstalled the old version, install the version you downloaded.

Hi All: I've been smashing my head against the wall with this one. I have uninstalled ALL unnecessary applications I could find. Basically all that is left is Windows XP, Drivers and Patches in Add/Remove Programs. I have removed the wireless driver, downloaded a newer one and installed it, still nothing. I have tried it using no Wireless Security on the AP, and also using WPA, and wouldn't work with either in Normal Mode, but worked with both in Safe Mode. I ran a virus and spyware check (before uninstalling Norton), and it came out clean. The weirest thing is, sometimes it does connect and get an IP in Normal Mode, but when I run a ping to my local gateway, half the packets are lost (timeout), and the ones that do reply I see a response time ranging from 2ms to 5000ms with no other traffic. I have no idea what can be causing this. Any help would be greatly appreciated. If all else fails, I will resort to formatting it and installing WinXP from scratch, since I doubt it's hardware.

I was working with Adobe After Effects CS3 on my Windows XP and it exported my movie as a 1GB big swf file for some reason. I figured, hey, After Effects has done worse, so I opened it. That completely locked up my computer and I had to hard reset it. I tried to restart it, but it gave me a blue screen STOP error so fast that I couldn't read it, then it reverted back to restarting. Now whenever I try to boot my computer, it immediately sends me to the Windows Advanced Options Menu where I can pick a number of booting options. NONE of the options I can choose from work. Not even Safe Mode or Last Known Good Configuration. They ALL start booting as a computer normally should, then it flashes the blue screen STOP error and starts restarting again, sending me back to the Windows Advanced Options Menu.

NONE of the options work! I cant get to the desktop no matter what, not even in Safe Mode. What can I do??

I have search all over the internet and other people have had the same problem, but no one seems to be solving it fully. I hope I can find the genius that can do this.

Hi
I have Thinkpad T43, with windows XP professional.

Since few days whenever i launched my ATI catalyst control center I would get BSOD and laptop will boot automatically and then everything would be fine.

Then while browsing my wife downloaded some media player exe, and since then my IE was redirecting to unknown sites (xalab etc) not to mention various ad pop-ups. One of the online video sites gave a message that I have TROJ/Rustok-N. (Also I would like to mention since couple of months my System Restore was not working although everything else was working fine)

I ran spybot, malawarebytes, trojanremover and removed whatever was reported. But the problem persisted, so I renewed my Norton Internet Security (actually got Norton 360), ran scans but it couldnt find anything.

Then I booted in safe mode and ran all these again, last thing I remember trojanremover prompted to remove something like sv~.exe and i did, when i restarted the system in normal mode I got BSOD and laptop rebooted, I disabled automatic restart on failure but it keeps on doing that.

I then went to Access IBM and restored by configuration which brings back the system files to previous state (the most latest point available was 07/2006)
I still got the BSOD while booting into normal mode, but safe mode was working fine.

I then went into safe mode and disabled couple of services on startup, then my laptop booted fine in normal mode, I found that now windows xp was reset to SP2, so i ran windows update w... Read more

The other day I booted up my notebook in the morning and was reading the news when my browser froze, then the entire system locked up. Now it takes an absurd amount of time to boot up and once I'm in, the system once again freezes if I try to do anything. I am able to get into Safe Mode and it runs fine with no problems. Hi guys,

I'm having an issue with my system that I hope someone will be able to help me with.

Basically I am stuck on a 'Startup Repair' loop. I am running Windows 7 64bit and did not have any startup / booting issues up until a few days ago.

When I was last using my system it was working perfectly. I left it for an hour or so and when I returned I was bemused to be greeted with a message from Startup Repair saying that it could not fix problems with my computer. Obviously it had crashed in my absence and upon automatically restarting began the startup repair process.

So I restarted it myself, and before having the option to hit F8 and open Advanced Startup Options (such as safe mode, I usually suspect dodgy drivers in such circumstances) I was instead greeted by "Windows is Loading Files ... " followed by Windows immediately attempting a startup repair that it fails. It said it was 'Attempting Repairs' but ultimately was unsuccessful in the end.

So I read up on the following threads here ...

Windows stuck at loading files, can`t run repair
Windows 7 crashes on startup. Can't restore, repair or repair install

... along with some other similar ones and tried the solutions.

I tried using my Windows 7 installation disc to use CMD to run bootrec /FixMBR /FixBoot /FixBCD. When I used /ScanOS it said "0 Windows installation found". After trying this a few times I was eventually presented with the "The Windows Boot Configuration Data file is miss... Read more

Answer:Stuck on Startup Repair Loop (Windows is Loading Files ; no safe mode)

The more I think about it, the more I suspect this could be related to a dodgy Windows update having installed itself on my system.

A - when I left the system the system prior to the first crash it was scheduled to install a group of updates, which I suspect it did followed by an automatic restart which led to the Startup Repair loop that I arrived back to.

B - when I shut down the system last night it was installing the latest updates again (after installing a few hundred during the day) to bring it back up to date - and when I restarted the system this morning I was greeted by the Startup Repair loop. I have a feeling that a Windows update released in the last week or so is causing the issue.

Does anyone know how I can go about finding a list of Windows updates and uninstall them via command prompt?

(EDIT: In the meantime I have run sfc /ScanNow twice via command prompt. Both times it reports that it found and fixed issues, but the Startup Repair loop continues upon restart.)

I have a computer running Windows XP Home. In normal mode no web pages will open, it gives me the option to run the Network Diagnostic Tool. Yahoo messenger will work and I can ping web sites successfully. In safe mode, I can view any web page. The computer recently had ad/spy/mal ware infections which I used Malware Bytes, Spybot, and Super Antispyware to clean off. I have re-ran all three programs and they don't find anything. I have windows firewall turned off right now so that is not blocking anything. I have also followed the steps in the link www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic290560.html. The computer still won't connect. When the option comes up to run the Network Diagnostic Tool, I run it and it says it did not detect any problems with Internet Explorer. I have checked and there are no proxy servers set in the LAN settings for IE. What else can I try to do to get the computer to work on the internet in safe mode? Thank you.

Neither of my CD-ROM drives will work (actually, both are DVD/CD I believe). But they do work in safe mode, perfectly.

Dell actually came and replaced the drives but they still didn't work so they put the old ones back in. Hours on the phone with Dell, their final suggested solution was to reinstall the OS. Frankly, I don't have time for this; I have to use my computer every single day and can't afford the downtime and the potential for not being able to reinstall some of my programs, do the configurations of the programs, etc.

We (me and the Dell guy) updated the drivers, including "firmware" (whatever that is).

This all seemed to happen after installing XP Service Pack 3, so we (me and the Dell guy) tried to do a system restore; that didn't work; uninstalled SP3; that didn't work.

I found a suggested fix by Googling, but that didn't work either -- checking the Device Manager for conflicts. I saw no yellow conflict flags (is that what I'm looking for there?)

I also went to the RUN prompt and typed sfc /scannow because someone suggested that to see if there is a driver conflict. Nothing came up (it appeared to be running through its paces for a while and then finished up and closed; not sure if that definitely means no problems?).

The computer is a Dell Vostro 400 (desktop) with Windows XP Service Pack 2 (was 3). I bought it new from Dell December 2007. I run AVG antivirus.

I have been using Pixarra Twisted Brush for almost a year. Art program. One day I clicked on it and the start image appeared and then was gone. No matter what I did it wouldn't start so deleted it and downloaded again. Same problem. Was advised from TB to start in safe mode and see if program would start, it did which, I guess, means I have a conflict but how do I know what to do next. I have deleted the program several times but when I go to reinstall it says it already exists do I want to install. I click yes. I backed my computer up a month and tried that but no luck. I am not, obviously, computer savvy. Can anyone help me so I can understand.

I'm running Vista Premium Home 32 and have 141.3 GB on my hard drive.

Thanks, Charlotte

Answer:Program won't start except in safe mode

Hello Charlotte,

Please try the following, install free Revo Uninstaller - Uninstall or remove programs, which you cannot uninstall, once more install the Pixarra and uninstall it with the Revo, which should get rid of all traces of the Pixarra from your computer.
When done, try to install your Pixarra again as the administrator. I mean, right click the setup and select Run As Administrator. Also you can try to run this software as the administrator, perhaps your antivirus or Window Defender block this application from running.

Guess, it's helpful...

Cheers...

An old windows program only runs in safe mode in Win 7, but worked fine in XP. The start up exe file looks for a set of files in a sub-directory, but it seems as if something in Win 7 is directing it to another directory. There is no ini file as far as I can see, and it works just fine in Win 7 safe mode. Could Win 7 be forcing the exe file to look at some other default directory which does not happen in safe mode? Is there any TRACE that could show me where the program is looking so I can move the files there?
Thanks.

Hi. I'm new to the forum, so I hope that someone can help.... (Thanks in advance...)

I'm running Vista SP1 on an Acer 4330 laptop. I can't uninstall Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007 (Trialware), no matter what I do!

When I tried to uninstall it (from an admin account), I got the message "The language of this installation package is not supported by your system"

I would like to uninstall the program because I already use Office 2003, and don't want to purchase 2007.

Icouldn't do anything from my admin account, so I went to Safe Mode, but got the same result.
How can I get rid of this program?

Not sure what's going on but unless I'm in safe mode I can't open any programs. All the usual programs I have that start when I boot up just didn't open including AVG. I try to open firefox, IE, WoW, WMP, but nothing happens. I am running on Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit edition.

Answer:I can't open any program unless I'm in safe mode

The SFC may be of some use too. Click Start/ All Programs/ Accessories
Right click on the Command Prompt option, on the drop down menu which appears, click on the Run as Administrator option
If you haven?t disabled User Account Control (and you shouldn?t!) you will be asked for authorization. Click the Continue button if you are the administrator or insert the administrator password.

Start the System File Checker

In the Command Prompt window, type: sfc /scannow, press Enter
You?ll see ?the system scan will begin?.

The scan may take some time and windows will repair/replace any corrupt or missing files. You will be asked to insert your Vista DVD if it?s needed.

Close the Command Prompt Window when the job is finished.

Hey guys, my graphics card has packed it in so I can only access my desktop in safe mode at the moment. There is a music program I have that I am having trouble opening. When I double click on the program icon the program doesnt open, so if I click on it again an error pops up saying the program is already open. When I open task manager the program does not appear under the application header but it does appear under the processes header. Would anyone have any idea how I can actually get the program to open up? Thanks a lot

Answer:Cant access program in Safe Mode

It sounds like the program is just not designed to run in safe mode.

When running in safe mode Windows loads the minimal amount of generic drivers. In this case it sounds like all drivers\components required by the program are being loaded. There probably is not a work around.

Hi all!
I have a program on my W7 computer called Family tree maker 2005. Up to abt. 6 months ago it would start within seconds when I clicked the icon. In the last 2 or 3 months it takes about a minute for the hour glass to stop and for the program to come up. Any idea what I might do to get it back working the way it used to.

Answer:W7 program slow to start except in safe mode

You can do a clean boot and open a few startup programs and services at a time, relaunching Family Tree each time you add a few items. This would narrow down the process or service.

Edit: Because the program launches in Safe Mode I believe you have a conflict. Perhaps your security suite or some other program that starts at boot.

I recently installed a program that at first I thought was cool but then gave me grief. SnoopFree Privacy Shield. It allowed me to whitelist my screenshot programs, but then it went on and crippled them. Very unacceptable behavior for software. Then I lost the ability to use my Start Menu (except the Start Button) and the vertical portion of my Quick Launch. If I do use them they freeze and won't get off the screen and the taskbar freezes as well.

I have not been able to uninstall all traces of SnoopFree Privacy Shield in normal mode, because my uninstaller programs keep on showing it in their lineup after supposedly removing it. I can use 2 out of my 3 screenshot programs in Safe Mode. Should I run my uninstallers there instead?

Here's the problem. Without installing as a service, how can I get the compiled script to run automatically when the machine reboots into safe mode with command prompt? Which startup locations does safe mode with command prompt allow to run?
I know, it's probably pretty simple. But, I'm a bit sick of googling.

This is for a anti-virus/anti-spyware/anti-malware tool/macro/script I'm creating.

This is the general idea and flowchart, the order may change a bit: The main script will be compiled as a exe.

1: Write to the registry to make the next boot safe mode:

Code:

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
"Shell"="Cmd.exe"

3. Shutdown and reboot using the cmd: SHUTDOWN -r -t 01
To allow command prompt only.

4. Start the windows installer service: using SafeMSI

5. Autorun a script which will mirror scripts from a ftp site using wget for windows into a temp directory. The tool will then create a txt file of the newly moved script files using the command dir > dir.txt , This it will use to create a chain of scripts/macros to run one after another, The scripts will use a command line bittorent client, and wget for windows to download other tools. Then the scripts will automate the installers, grab updates, and scan with them.
6. The tool will add a entry to the run-once registry key to start the last part of the tool when the machine reboots.

7. The tool will then add to the registry t... Read more

Answer:Run program automatically upon safe mode reboot

Got it.

The answer was to use a freeware application to set the compiled script as a service, then using regmon find the keys that changed and create a reg file to enter the specific info into the registry under the HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot subkeys. The interesting thing is that I can use one reg script to remove the keys and then rewrite them with another, that way I delete any virus that will run as a service at safe mode, I fix safe boot if a virus has deleted those keys, I get my auto-run protection in safe mode, and I may be able to prevent some root kits from activating so it's easier to detect and remove them.

I am trying to make a program automatically load along with the basic drivers and files windows loads in safe mode.
I've seen several people doing it, so how can I do it?

Answer:Automatic program load in safe mode

You should have a complete backup of your system so that you can re-image it in case you brick the computer.

The steps that you need to take depend on what the program is and how the program works. What is the program that you want to automatically run while in the safe mode?

If the program that you want to add to the safe mode is a service, then this info might help:

I am running a fresh install of XP Pro. When I log into safe mode and then log out and restart it pops up a box that says End Program Sample and then the progress bar fills up and then the button says end now when its finished. It never ends automatically. Upon inspection I can't find a program called sample running in the task monitor. I have no spyware or viruses I know this for a fact, cause I did a update of both and then ran them and nothing turned up. What is this sample program end dialog box? I can set it to auto end all end dialog boxes but I'd like to remove or fix the problem instead.

Not sure where the problem is. My PC will only run in Safe Mode at the moment.

I can run Vista normally but it freezes up every few minutes and it is impossible to perform any tasks in normal mode.

I have run Malwarebytes but nothing, so I think there must be a root problem.

What can I do apart from READ & RUN ME FIRST thread, as I cannot turn off UAC?

Answer:Can only work in Safe Mode

To disable UAC via Command Prompt:

Try this:
Go to start > type in cmd
Click on cmd.exe > and paste in the following:

C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe /k %windir%\System32\reg.exe ADD HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v EnableLUA /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /fClick to expand...

After you enable or disable UAC, you will have to reboot your computer for the changes to take effect.

You should receive a success message saying: "The operation completed successfully"

Mod Edit:Moved from XP to the Am I Infected forum... boopme

I caught the "disk antivirus professional" bug on 2-17. It was as described by Mr. Abrams in his front cover article. Fortunately I found this website (chrome wouldn't work, but IE did) and Mr. Abrams described how I could get into safe mode. I was frustrated trying to figure it out and didn't have access to help files.

It worked out that I was able to do a successfull system restore to 2-16 while in safe mode. With the computer freed up, I was then able to do a scan, I used microsoft essentials, that located the offending files. 3 were in the recycle bin and the major one in a restorer file which I guess would be used if I wanted to reverse the restore. I was able to remove them completely then.

My questions are why did safe mode work? And can safe mode be compromised by an attacker?

Answer:Why does safe mode work?

Safe Mode runs a minimum amount of applications which makes it good platform for running scans as you have.  This isn't true with all security software.

You should be aware that there is no single software which will catch all of the possible types of infections.  For this reason I will request that this topic be moved to the Am I Infected forum where members and staff who are best qualified to address this can help you.

I have gone through the Maleware process in another thread and was recommended to come here next.

http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?p=1774319#post1774319

The issue is constant freezing in normal mode, meaning I can only use my PC in Safe Mode.

I have had a few Nvstor32.sys blue screens recently and I changed the NVIDIA driver to the Standard Dual and it has still happened a couple of times.

My base unit has been making a continuous whirring noise every time I view a video online or on my desktop, so I'm not sure if it is a software or hardware issue. Around the same time I have been getting an error message everytime I download or use a video saying 'Failed to load ffmpeg.dll!' but I have no idea if any of these things are connected.

Any help would be really appreciated.

Answer:Can only work in Safe Mode

Greetings, Kasem1975...

Try this: run <msconfig>, and in the Startup section disable anything that's not critical (which should be just about everything - if your antivirus is listed, you can disable that also as long as you don't access the 'net while troubleshooting). Reboot and see if your symptoms change - if so, then you can repeat the process and selectively re-enable the startups until you find the culprit(s).

As far as the blue screens, if you'll navigate to C: > Windows > Minidump, grab a few of the more recent files, zip them and attach them to your next post, then someone might be able to look at them and give some direction.

Hi, Hope someone can help and hope I'm in right forum?

Whenever my friend's pc has a problem, I'm called into help. This morning she phoned to say, she'd decided to update her AVG6 to AVG 7 (running xp), when she came to restart it, she couldn't log onto any users, it would log on for a couple of seconds, then logged off to main login page. I visited and started it in safe mode, deleted avg 7 and restarted.

Downloaded avg again, after installation it recognised a virus and said it would have to do a restart to heal. After the restart, same problem occurred. Initially, even the safe mode page would not load. Managed to do a sytem restore via 'msconfig'. Ran avg which detected Worm Funner.A in 9 files, (rundll.32 and some Dc22.exe), it said it had healed them but had to do a restart. After this, nothing can be logged onto even in safe mode, it logs off straight away. All I can think off is a clean install, though this seems drastic measure. Is there anything else I can do to get in and cure?

Thanks!

Hi,

I'm having major problems will my dell celeron lap top, its windows vista home basic.I had to get the hard drive replaced last year and bought new memory but up to the last 2 months it has been working fine.
This week windows keep loading but won't open up, it works on safe mode, twice I restored to a previous time and it would restart and reopen but it appears you can only use a previous date once.
i'm now at restore point day of today and I fear it won't open as it should again. I've done virus checks nothing shows up, i've optimised the disk drive using the mechanic tool i purchased off dell and i'll done disk check but nothing seems to be working.

Can anyone help me.

thanks

Answer:lap top will only work in safe mode.

Hi
Welcome to Dell Community
You can try this step as it could be possibility that one or more installed application may block the window to load up in normal mode. You can try the following steps
1. Go on run and type msconfig and hit enter
2. Then choose the startup option in tab and disable all application and restart the computer, if it boot normally then there is one or more application may be blocking to go on the normal mode.
3. Then if it works you need to check one by one which possible application is blocking the way. and you need to uninstall the particular application from the system
Hope it will resolve your issue

My old laptop picked up the dreaded antivirus soft today. Did some research and pretty much the beginning step in each tutorial was to restart the computer. Before windows opens up you are supposed to hit F8 until you can select the Safe Networking mode. Problem is that computer never goes into safe mode. It just keeps circeling back to the same sceen and if you select any one of the three safe modes it just keeps coming back and coming back. Is there a work around or another way to go about getting rid of this nasty malware?Moved from "Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs" forum as no log posted

Answer:Safe mode will not work

Let's try to take care of this in normal mode then we'll check safe mode afterward.First, Download rkill.com to your desktop.Double-click on the rkill.com in order to automatically attempt to stop any processes associated with Rogue programs. Please be patient while the program looks for various malware programs and ends them. When it has finished, the black window will automatically close and you can continue with the next step. If you get a message that rkill is an infection, do not be concerned. This message is just a fake warning given by these Rogue programs when it terminates programs that may potentially remove it. If you run into these infections warnings that close Rkill, a trick is to leave the warning on the screen and then run Rkill again. By not closing the warning, this typically will allow you to bypass the malware trying to protect itself so that rkill can terminate these Rogue Programs. So, please try running Rkill until malware is no longer running. You will then be able to proceed with the rest of the instructions.Check your Proxy settings in Internet Explorer to make sure malware did not alter them. If so, that can affect your ability to browse or download tools required for disinfection: * Open Internet Explorer > click Tools > Internet Options > Connections tab. * Click the LAN Settings... button and uncheck Use a proxy server for your LAN or change the settings to the proxy you normally use if you previously reconfigured it. * Remove any ... When I boot with F8 and select Safe Mode the screen boots showing a full page of drivers in \Windows\Sytem 32 and does not go any further. From there, I can do nothing. The only way out is to turn computer off with switch. I want to get to Safe Mode.

Windows XP Pro, SP2, all relevant patches.

The computer is working A-OK on a day-to-day basis. However, I discovered something recently when I tried booting into safe mode: My computer crashes before it completes booting.

It seemingly gets to the login-screen. The available accounts shows up, but the disk keeps spinning and spinning and the mouse pointer is moving very sluggish. I never get as far as to select an account and enter a password, because out of the blue the computer suddenly reboots. This happens every time I try to boot in safe mode.

I find this a bit weird since I can boot in normal mode just fine. I have checked the event viewer for any clues, without finding any.

Any clues about how to continue debugging this problem would be appreciated. Also please say so if you need any more specific information about hardware, installed software, setup etc.

Sorry. Re-install Windows on top of it, or re-install it from scratch.

When trying to reboot my computer it won't work unless I am in Safe mode.

I ran Ccleaner
I couldn't download the SuperAntiSpyware, even after checking to make sure my Disabled Windows Installer was not configured
I ran spybot
I ran MalwareBytes and attached the log
and I couldn't run combofix because I am in Safe Mode and I couldn't figure out if my Norton was running or not, combofix said it was and I couldn't figure how to turn it off.

Obviously I am not sure what to do can someone help??

1. If you have the XP cd, you can try a repair install:

2. Or repair the registry:

I have read multiple other posts that are similar to this issue but seem to be a different issue. Here is what I have done thus far.

Reinstall windows
Disable all startup items before and after the reinstall
start in safe mode
The only way that I am able to do anything with the computer (Laptop) is to have it in safe mode. Otherwise it is so slow that I can't even click on the start menu. When I press CTRL + ALT + DEL it will wait a moment and then bring up the screen to select shutdown, restart, task manager and some other things or cancel. If i select task manager it will bring it up and I can click on performance and see no unusual memory or CPU usage however; when I look at the CPU indicator light it is almost 100% solid. Another thing that I noticed is that the time is wrong. This tells me that there is a BIOS issue. Not sure if it would tell you the same thing. I went over the BIOS and saw nothing that appeared to be out of place. So my thinking is it could be a BIOS virus. I have read that there are a few of those now that impact windows 7. Essentially a rootkit for windows. One last thing I wanted to add is that it works fine in safemode with networking. That is actually how I am posting right now.

Again this is just where I have gotten on my own, any thoughts on what it could be? All help is appreciated.

I have an existing hard drive, that I have run in this computer. I have taken the hard drive out,..it was not working in the laptop. I got it to run on my desktop computer. The harddive works outside of the laptop. I have put the hard drive back in my laptop but the software does not boot up, it shuts down.

I tried to get into the safe mode, but again the computer trys... but it shuts down. (it goes to a screen that quickly flashes then shuts down)

What should I do to correct this problem? How do I get the windows program to engage?

I guess I need to give a little history, I started to put a wireless mouse on the laptop, I could not get the program to work, and the computer starting acting up, i.e. like not booting up. I think I removed the program, but it now is acting like this, not booting, and not going into safemode.

Answer:Lap top safe mode does not work

What did you put on the laptop hard drive while it was connected to the desktop computer? Did you install Windows on it? If so, you're going to have problems now that the drive is in the laptop.

Hi Guys

I am trying to fix my partners laptop which has window vista - she bought it new in May 2010....Acer Aspire 5738G - 500Gb.

Apparently just yesterday she cannot log in via an admin user profile to access her desktop....it also has fingerprint system, so she used it as an alternative (fingerprint has been set up and confirmed before)to access her desktop but was denied too.

There is NO other user profile either...as guest or hidden admin.

So I went in to try the safe mode to find out what is wrong or to set up another user profile but the safe mode won't load either....any idea how to solve the problem?

Thank you for your time in advance

Answer:Safe Mode does not work

Any advice please....

I installed IE8 on my laptop with Windows Vista Home Premium. The only way I can get IE8 to open is to run it in safe mode with add-ons disabled. If I run it in normal mode it just gets stuck at connecting. I did not have any problems running IE7.

Answer:IE8 will only work in safe mode

It simply means that there is some issue with the Add -ons installed on the computer .
open the internet explorer , and check the addons by follwing this path
Tools > internet options > Programs > Manage Adons .
and check the adons installed on your computer .

I am trying to clean my colllege sons computer from a Virtumundo virus, and I know I will eventually get there thanks to this great forum. However, many procedures call for executing things from the safe mode. On his computer there is a problem with safe mode. It just shows up as a black screen with "safe mode" in the 4 corners. I can call up the task manager, but other then that this screen is dead wihout anything on it. I saw 1 or 2 references on this forum to a situation like it, but not indication of what the problem/solution is. Any ideas? Thanks,

Karst

this is a many faceted and increasing in facets issue (ill try to make it as short as possible);

backstory:
the male side of my video cable connection (the part on the motherboard) had bent pins; the pins were unbent and the cable was able to fit back in, BUT

problems:
the picture was garbled--wrong colors, moving lines, etc. the people at a tech store told me the video cable was pinched and knowing that it had been jammed in the hinge for a while, i believed it extremely feasible. I finally ordered a new video cable but replaced it, and to no avail. the picture may have been slightly better--but not significantly if so; additionally (and im not sure if it was this way the first time as well) the computer was displaying at the size of the external.

i restarted, and reazlied that the laptop screen displayed nothing at startup, until logged in--exactly like the external. i figured that at least a portion of what was going on was the computer was sending the external screen signal to the laptop.

things i've tried:

-reseating both ends of the new video cable MANY times
-turning the computer off, taking out battery, holding start button, putitng battery back in, restarting
-every variation of screen resolution/external monitor setting
-pluggin in the external, putting laptop to sleep, unpluggnig external
-reinstalling video/image drivers
function key combinations

when i tried to put in safe mode via F8, the screen went blue or light gray and stayed that w... Read more

Answer:stuck booting safe mode, which doesnt work; stuck in external monitor mode?

i managed to change the safe mode option, unfortunately the laptop screen still isnt working correctly (the external is)
