Laptop keeps going back to the homescreen for no reason

Question: Laptop keeps going back to the homescreen for no reason

(I'm not sure if this belongs in maintenance or in bugs. Please tell me if you think I should move it.)
I have a year-old ASUS F555LA-AS51 Core i5 15.6-Inch Laptop. It's been running pretty smoothly, but within the last month, it's begun to randomly go back to the homescreen with all the apps. This doesn't seem to be on a fixed schedule--there's always a gap of at least 40 minutes, but sometimes it's longer. It doesn't matter what I have running. Sometimes I only have Word open, and sometimes I'll have Netflix or a videogame running and it still happens. Luckily, the apps or windows don't close; they just minimize for a second. It doesn't take any time to get back to what I was doing, but it is a nuisance. I have tried turning it off and on again, running antimalware programs, manually debugging, and changing the screen saver settings. I'm not sure what I can try to get this to stop happening.
If you have any ideas how to stop this glitch from happening, please let me know! Thanks!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Okay, I have this gateway and it was running fine until I turned it on and when i logged in on the login screen it took a some while before getting to the desktop and everything was back to it's factory settings as it was from day 1. My favorites in internet explorer are all gone, my files in my documents are gone as well but theyre all sent to the C: drive so their not really gone along with my desktop files. idk wut happen? it was working just fine. the computer technician who was fixing another computer told me it was probably hacked but i doubt it because prior to that i did not turn off the computer properly just off the switch. it seems that it doesnt load the settings i left that's why it takes a long time to startup when i log in. and everytime i turn the computer on a new "TEMP" folder adds on. and my "Owner" folder which should be the one that loads does not.

Question: Homescreen?

I used the windows insider app to try windows 10 for windows phone and there are three major bugs that i need a solution to instantly. 1. The home screen of the phone will not show up and it just says loading, 2 the directional hot bar at the bottom of the screen will go away when you swipe up but will not come back when you swipe again, and lastly when you pull down the notification center, you can not swipe it back up and you have to put it to sleep in order for it to go away!!! PLEASE HELP!!!!

Hard reset (using the Microsoft Recovery Tool downloaded to a pc if necessary) and don't restore from a backup (setup as a new device).
Not instant, but it will untangle it.

I always wondered how many tiles other people put on their frontpage.
Myself, I can only handle two screens worth of icons. That way I only need to swipe all the way up or down, and never miss any tiles in the middle.
Also, the tiles must form a pleasant irregular grid of big and small tiles, and while there shouldn't be too much custom colored tiles present at once, a delicate balance is required.
How do you manage your Startscreen?

Answer:How long is your Homescreen?

I usually group my apps in folder , weather,WPC are large tiles on my lumia 920. I don't even have to scroll ;)

Hey everyone, thanks for taking the time to read this. A few hours ago, I was on my computer, when I saw that curling was on. I went to go watch, and when I came back my computer was restarting. The odd part was that there were three of the green sliders that say Microsoft corporation under them (I use windows vista). Next, three of the windows logos appeared, and the homescreen showed up. This is where the real problem begins. The left half of the screen was covered in a checkerboard-like pattern, which covered the shortcuts to the programs. The computer continued to boot up normally, and programs like spotify and windows live Id came up like usual. I proceeded to try to open norton security, but before I could scan for viruses, a blue screen appeared, and the computer shut down. I repeated the process (restarting), and tried to open the Internet, but the same blue screen appeared. Any ideas? I would appreciate any help.

A little about my computer: it runs windows vista, and has had no problems like this before. I have norton, Which has done it's job in the past. The monitor and the computer itself are Dell.

On the current homescreen, the checkerboard pattern is a scrambled mix of the background and icons for the home screen programs. The sidebar is functional, but it is checkered as well.
Thanks again.

I'm trying to change my homescreen. Right now, for some crazy reason, I launch 2 tabs each of 2 different news sources.

Anyway, the problem is, when I go to the home page tab on Internet Properties, the "Use Current" options is gray. The other 2, "Use Default" and "New Tab" are normal., but I believe I need the "Use Current" to change and select new homepages.

Thanks for the help.

For the last month, I've been using an Acer 8473T travelmate laptop.

Even though it's old, it's brand new (was an ex-business laptop that was never unboxed).

It's worked perfectly until just now. Never dropped.

I was working a document, then put it to sleep. I woke it from sleep, and the screen won't come on. I took out the battery, plugged it into the power-but the screen still won't come on

It turns on (screen stays off) & the fans come to full power.

I've tried (nothing worked):
Plugging it to an external display (hdmi)
Discharging the capacitors power by pressing power off without the battery
Removing the ram, using in dif slot
Removing the hard drive
What's left to do?

Answer:New laptop died-no cause/reason

On most laptops, some of the function keys are used to switch to internal/external monitor amongst other things. Are you sure you haven't pressed one of those??
Also try the dim/brightness.

My laptop is setup like a desktop using a docking station. My laptop is plugged into the surge protector. After about half an hour to 45 minutes of use WHILE plugged in, the laptop gets hot and shuts down for no reason.

IF I have the laptop not plugged in, it will run until the battery dies without shutting off.

Obviously, I want to keep it plugged in, but not have it shut off. I have tried cleaning out the fan, I bought a new AC adapter.

The next thing I am going to try is one of those cooling mats, but I dont think that is going to solve it.

I took it to Best Buy and Staples, but I refuse to pay more than $100 to fix this issue, as this laptop is only 2 years old and I spent $1500 on it.

Any suggestions as to how I can fix this without spending a lot of money?

Answer:My Laptop keeps shutting down for no reason

I think it could be related to overheating and heres why, depending on your settings, while plugged in the cpu has full voltage, on battery it reduces it, saving energy plus heat. While plugged in, try changing power optitions in control panel and see if that helps. ed

Before i Explain my problem regarding my Laptop, I'd like to let you know the specifications and available options right now with me so that you can consider it while you're answering my question.

I have a DELL INSPIRON 1525 Laptop.
Windows Vista Home Basic With Genuine License.
I have Recovery Drive which came with my Laptop(a 10GB space alloted for it specially)
I have Windows Vista Home Basic DVD i think.

I have a wierd problem. My system recently has experienced a problem. It restarts without reason. If the computer is IDLE for sometime or if nothing is performed on the computer or if i leave my computer with download on it, When i get back i see the computer restarted. I was burning a DVD & suddenly the Laptop restarted at 80% & my DVD wasted. I really got VERY annoyed looking at this.

Initially i thought it was because of overheating(as few people guessed it might be the problem). My Laptop Temp is arround 50-60 degrees now. I went to SAFE MODE & kept on nothing happened. So i came to know its NOT because of Overheating since I've Observed the Laptop restart after 20 min i started my laptop(Yes! its at a VERY VERY cool temperature).

I have seen few times, The Laptop gets a Blue Screen(Like error screen in windows XP) and in 1-2 seconds it restarts and DELL logo appears. So due to short span of time, I coudnt see the error code.(I dont have any USB's plugged in at that time). It happened 3-4 times... Read more

I am running Windows 10 build 11102, but it happened in earlier builds too.

My battery is old and I should replace it. But I have configured to do nothing when the battery level goes to critical, but the laptop is on AC power. What is more, when I remove the battery, the laptop also goes randomly in hibernation.

I do not want to disable hibernation altogether, because I am afraid that the laptop then will simply shutdown.

I also have Internet Explorer 8 and Outlook Express 6, and I suspect that there is a clash when it comes to trying unsuccessfully to print whole messages from O.E. I have Norton Internet Security 2012 and Utilities 15, which I keep checked and clean, though it's about 6 months since I did a defragmentation.
I use the laptop only for e-mails and surfing plus LibreOffice 3 for documents.
Recently, the laptop has been crashing occasionally - maybe once a week on average - for no apparent reason. It happens at any time, whether I'm surfing or on the screensaver. I either get vertical black / white lines or suddenly a blank black screen and have to force a closedown. When I start up again, all works normally until the next crash.
I am not an experienced computer user, so are there any easy ways I can check what is causing this problem?
Many thanks in advance,

Sometimes the antivirus can cause slowdowns (actually, often). I've heard AVG can be notorious for that. There are faster ones available, or you could use the built-in Defender antivirus instead, up to you. In addition, here are some ways to speed things up:
Optimize Performance of Windows 8
If it doesn't say outright, there are some programs that come with your computer that, if removed, you would experience a faster computer. Dells have all kinds of such programs with big important-sounding names that don't really benefit anything, in all truthfulness.

I was playing a DVD and it shut down right int he middle of it. For no reason, just a complete shut down. I can start it back up and sometimes it will work fine, other times it will shut down again. Any help would be awesome...

Answer:Help - my laptop shuts down for no reason!

Automatically log when and why shutdowns have occurred.
Love it or hate it, Windows XP is undeniably more stable than its predecessors. But it still crashes, and it still has occasional trouble shutting down. This registry hack logs all shutdown errors, telling you when, where, and why strange and annoying things have happened.
Some folks have the luxury of packing their buggy PC off to a help desk. But if you like to get your hands dirty, consider this essential tweakage.
Here's how to set up logging for unexpected system shutdowns:
1. Open RegEdit and browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
2. Set the ShutDownReasonUI data value to 1. (If this string doesn't exist, create it and set the value to 1.)
3. Exit RegEdit and reboot your PC.
To examine the log you've created, open up the Event Viewer, which you'll find by selecting Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer. Click on the System subheading and you'll see a massive list of system events. Errors will be marked with a red X or a yellow exclamation mark. Double-click on the error and you'll see details that may help you unravel the mystery.

Answer:HELP - My laptop keeps shutting down for no reason

I don't know much about laptops, but on a desktop, those symptoms would lead me to suspect overheating, esp. the processor. Does your CPU have thermal sensing/protection? My P4 will shut the system down if it gets too hot.

That's just an idea- wait for someone with more laptop smarts to show up.

Hello everyone,

Im not really that good at computers, but anyway I've tried everything i can with no satisfactory results and since I've heard this website is the best when it comes to solving computer problems, i've come to You.

Here's the deal: 2weeks ago I bought a brand new asus K53E laptop, installed the drivers that came with the CD and.. since then my cpu keeps rebooting for some reason I can't recognize. I did some research about what could be wrong and as far as I got was: its not over heating(the cpu doesnt feel warm and the temperature is never too high), its not power supply(i've tried it with battery only, with power plug only, with power plug and battery together). I might be wrong about those things, since im not a pro, but thats what my limited knowledge tells me.

The interesting thing is that after i read somewhere, that drivers might be the problem, i tried to play with them (uninstalling some and then seeing if it works). Yesterday I got all the drivers that came with the CD installed except audio driver and it only rebooted twice(before that it used to happen much more often). Today I uninstalled all the audio devices in my computer and its working fine.

So I think the problem is somewhere in that section(i might be wrong again, since im not a pro at this).

I know You will need to know all of my computer specs and I dont really have a clue where to find them, so im going to attach the report card from the program called EVEREST, as i ... Read more

I know You will need to know all of my computer specs and I dont really have a clue where to find them, so im going... Read more

I have an old windows 7 toshiba laptop with a broken screen that is plugged into my monitor through vga and audio with 2 usb receivers plugged in, also it has no battery so it is always plugged in. it was working fine with only a few programs installed like war thunder, chrome and microsoft visual studio. It was working fine apart from one time i had to wipe the laptop and factory reset it to get it working but that was a while ago. I tried to go on it about 2 weeks ago and the fan would start up and the power and charging lights would turn on ,but not the num lock or cap locks keys even though they should have been and the screen wouldn't turn on. Also my monitor auto turns on when it detects an input like when you turn on your pc for example but when i turned my laptop on it didn't auto turn on. I kept trying and trying to get it on and i held down f8 and pressed it and mashed it on startup but it did the same thing, not working. finally I tried unplugging everything plugged into it and finally it started up like normal so i booted it into safe mode to be careful and deleted some things like war thunder and stuff and then turned off my computer thinking it was fixed in order to boot it in normal mode. Although it just did what it did before and didn't startup properly. Because this is my secondary computer behind my hp chromebook 14 i left it for about a week and started it up and it worked like normal and i used it for about 2 hours and then put it to sleep. Answer:Laptop shutdown with no reason or errors.

The max operating temp for your processor is 100 deg C. The temps you report are very close. I suspect that the symptoms that you describe are related to the processor shutting down due to high temp - the activities you describe are high CPU utilization activities.1) Use a vacuum to clean around the air intake and discharge.2) Clean the airways as best as you can. Remove any bottom panels that you are comfortable removing and clean away dirt and dust with a can of compressed air - clean the fan but stop it from overspinning.3) Always use a laptop on a clean, level, hard surface - never on a lap, bed, etc that may restrict air flo into the air intake.Best of luck.

I'm running a Dell Inspiron E1505 laptop running Windows Vista. Every evening, I shut my laptop's lid and put it into standby for the night. Recently, however, I have woken in the morning to find the computer on. Specifically, I first noticed this happening two days ago, but I had made no major software or hardware changes that would conceivably cause power management changes. I did install a new version of Tweak VI yesterday, but the problem started before that.

The laptop is plugged into an ethernet cable, but I have checked and made sure all settings related to "Wake on LAN" are disabled in the BIOS and Windows itself. I ran a virus check a few days ago (I run avast!), but I have no run one since the problem started. I have, however, run a few anti-spyware programs (Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D) and updated all my definitions.

I even went so far as to check the Event Viewer and look at the System events. Interestingly enough, it shows the laptop going into standby at 1:05:47 AM this morning (when I shut the laptop lid), but it never shows it waking up. The next standby-related event occurs at 10:09:01 AM, when I noticed the laptop was on and put it back into standby. There are a number of events between those times, but none that say the laptop came out of standby mode. In fact, the very next event after the first standby occurred at 10:08:23 AM, where a Plug and Play error was reported. Perhaps there are events missing from the log?

I have a Compaq Laptop and during use I have the problem that it shuts off for no apparent reason even though connected to the main power supply. I have disabled any sleep or hibernate function but still I get the same problem.
Thought it may be due to not having SP2 installed for windows. Any ideas? Could it be the BIOS acting up?

Please help.

Answer:My Laptop switches off for no apparent reason.

Lets rule out any dodgy files running on there that may be causing this:

go to , and download 'Hijack This!'.
Unzip, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log somewhere, and please copy & paste its contents to the forum.

It will possibly show other issues deserving our attention, but most of what it lists will be harmless or even required, so do NOT fix anything yet.
Someone here will be happy to help you analyze the results.

Also, what are you doing at the time it shuts down? What I mean is, are you using a certain type of application, or just wandered off and it happens?

Hi....My laptop is about a year and a half old and for about a year now, it's been just spontaneously turning off with no warning. It happens even though it is plugged into the wall and I have a fully charged battery. I can usually get several hours of use before this happens, but after it happens, if I don't wait a little while before starting it up again it will happen again right away.

Does anyone know why this would be happening or what I can do to make it stop doing this?

I have a 4 month old Asus G60Jx and, lately, it started freezing for no apparent reason. It freezes the most when I'm running a few applications together such as google chrome (with lots of tabs)+ powerpoint+winamp+adobe reader. However, it should not be the case of exhausting the memory (this laptop has 8Gb RAM).

Could you please help me out? I need my laptop to work...

My specs are:
Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit
Nvidia Geforce GTS 360M
i7 Q720 1.6GHz
8Gb Ram

Thanks in advance!

Answer:Laptop freezes for no apparent reason

Use this MSFT article to config your machine to generate Memory dumps on demand :
Windows feature lets you generate a memory dump file by using the keyboard
If your numlock remains responsive during the freeze, you will be able to do a CTRL +SCRL+SCRL to force a memory dump ( BSOD). Once complete upoload the file using forum instructions.

In general this type of freeze should be handled by eliminating hardware, either one by one, or by starting with the minimum necessary set.
Also set your BIOS to the very basic defaults.

Hello fellas,
so 2-3 months ago i bought a new laptop:
Intel core i7 6700 hq
ram 16 gb
GeForce GTX 950M
256 SSD
Everything seemed fine but suddenly out of the blue it started to freeze, disabling mouse, keyboard and the fan increased its speed. After a couple of times i decided to use the option to return it in the first 7 days, so i got a new one.
I was only in my home country for a couple of days, since getting the laptop was the reason for returning. I got the new one and i went back to Germany, where i study and live now.
For a month everything was fine again, until a couple of weeks / lets say 2 / it started to have the same problem. I opened it, cleaned the fan and everything around it, although it didn't really seem to need it. I didn't see any damage to the ventilation pipes around the processor or video card.
I thought it could be a software problem, so i reinstalled everything, but the problem keeps occurring.
I've installed now a program for temperature tracking ( SpeedFan ) and tried a couple of tests on games, from really low to high demanding and the temperatures always seemed to get high, regardless of the game. As example - Counter strike 1.6, which is known to run even on the weakest computers, got my processor temperature to almost 70 degrees....
Running a scan on Windows defender gets it to around 80-85 degrees.
The freezing happens really often at around 60 degrees, sometimes it gets higher, but doesn't freeze. What i mean is that its not someth... Read more

Answer:Laptop crashing and freezing without a reason

Maybe your problem’s been solved, but if not, similar ones have been covered quite a lot before in these forums, so did you try a search?
Sounds to me like a software problem, in which case you could check it out yourself (wherever you are), and quite likely fix it. Maybe you’ve already scanned for malware, but it might be legitimate software getting out of hand.
Your posting rang a bell, as I’ve been there too, fairly recently, with identical symptoms, and randomness, and cumulative effect. It affected my capable desktop, as well as my laptop. In my case the main culprit (by a long chalk) turned out to be an additional (and superfluous) security program my bank’s website was pushing.
You’ve given plenty of helpful info, but if you need to post again, your Windows version would be good addition!

I'm not sure why this is happening, but seveal time throughout a normal working day my laptop will just shut down on me all by itself. Why is this happening? I have a Dell Inspiron 7000. Right now it will not run on battery power regardless of how long it's been plugged in. And there are even times when I'll only shift the computer slightly and it just shuts down. I'm assuming that has something to do with the power cord. The other occurences are happening without the computer being moved around at all.

Good evening,

I own an ACER Extensa 5620

OP Is Windows 7 Home Premium

the original installed OS on the system was Vista
full retail version?

I purchased this laptop from EBAY. It was cheap and I am starting to figure out why. It was working fine for a while, minus the CD Rom not working. All of a sudden a BSOD keeps on interupting me when I am working on line, or on word, when ever it feels like. I brought the laptop to a PC repair place and they installed a new version of windows 7 on my laptop. They said that should fix the problem with the screen. However this did not work. He did say to bring it back and he would look at it again, I am trying to fix the problem myself because I can not leave my laptop for more than a few days unless it is necessary. Attached is the reports that Sevenforum asked my to do. Please help with this problem.

First off, I'm a teenager. 17 to be exact. I got a job babysitting and saved my pay for 6 months to buy my laptop ( I write music on it. Long story. Irrelevant.) I have an HP Envy 17t (the black one with the sliver keys) and I was thrilled to bring it home even with windows 10 pre installed. Unfortunately, since the day that I brought it home from best buy on November 8th, 2015 it's... well.

It's had 12 BSOD screens from doing... nothing.
HP support has deleted my recovery drive, corrupted my windows store registry, and messed up mute key.
It can't handle a simple task like streaming video from youtube without having a bluescreen error and crashing.

It freezes at random and I have to reset it and I never know it is up to date or if some of these errors are because of a driver incompatibility or something because HP support disabled auto updates the same time they deleted my registry. Now as of today I can't go on youtube without the bluescreen. Before it was just freezing. Bad freezing... but now it just crashes. It really crushes me to know I spent $1065 for this. I LOVE my laptop... when it works, it's something I am proud to own but if it keeps this up I don't know how much longer I will have it. I have virus protection, It is set to defragment every 3 days, I don't pirate music or software (I actually pay for it) I scan it, I don't run more than 3-4 things at a time so the ram never reaches over 40% but somehow my disk linger... Laptop is a Lenovo Ideapad Z560. Yes, I know its circa 2010 and fully expect 90% of the responses to tell me to buy a new computer, downgrade to Windows 7, or both, but as the title says, this slowdown is very sudden and inexplicable. My specs are decidedly mediocre:

Intel Core i3 380M @ 2.53GHz (dual core w/ hyperthreading)
Intel integrated graphics w/ 1.3GB memory
300GB HDD @ 5400RPM

However, the thing ran fine until just after Halloween. And by fine, I mean it could do Photoshop in 4k, play Simcity 4, Runescape, and Cities XL 2011 at max settings, run multiple mp3 downloads, and have 15 tabs open in Firefox. Not all at once of course, but it did everything at a decent speed while never going above 75% processor. Then, the day after Halloween, it suddenly slowed down. Like, literally one minute it was a decent computer, the next it felt like it was a decade old.

The hard drive thrashed, Runescape played like a slideshow on minimum settings, photoshop wouldn't even open, forget any local games except Runescape, and I could almost take a nap in the time it took for Firefox to open. And once it did, it would scroll choppily and crash with more than 4 tabs open. And the whole time, the cooling fan was whining so loud I could hear it, even with nothing open.

Now at this point, you might be thinking "virus!" Well, so was I. So, after running every maintenance program (Ccleaner, Disk Cleanup, Disk Checker, Defraggler, and boot time Defraggler, in that o... Read more

In a few posts over the last few months, I mentioned that my laptop (which runs Windows 8 DP) would regularly freeze every few hours without warning. Because this started happening almost immediately after I made the switch from Windows 7 to Windows 8, I assumed that it was a bug in Windows 8 and that I would eventually see a fix.

Recently, I decided to put Windows 7 back on my machine just to make sure it wasn't a hardware issue. My 3 year black tie warranty was expiring in May and I wanted to get it replaced if necessary while the warranty was still good. After a few days of sporadic use of Windows 7 again, it happened. My laptop froze exactly as it had done in Win8.

Then, after rebooting and continuing what I was doing, it did it again. In a way, this is a good thing. It's good because it shows that the OS may not have been at fault and because I may end up with a free upgraded laptop out of the deal. Best Buy says that if they can't repair the device in a cost effective way, they will offer me a more current computer (with similar specs). I never thought that warranty services ever did that. I assumed that they would always have a replacement laptop of identical make ready. I am glad I opted for the 3 year warranty. Looks like it will be worth it....

Answer:Hmm...maybe Windows 8 wasn't the reason my laptop was freezing

AH, be careful of the "with similar specs". Leaves room for much vagueness. For example a duo core and dual core are similar except that the latter has ~30 % better performance. Before you let them switch and sign on the dotted line get it in writing.

A few weeks ago, my laptop began randomly shutting off while I have been in the middle of using it.  It never sends an error code or gives any warning.  It just goes completely black and then after a few seconds begins to reboot.  When it is on again, it gives no indication or error report that it had encountered any problems that caused a reboot.  I have no idea what may have caused it.  Sometimes it is while I am actively typing, other times while I am reading things on the internet but not touching the computer at all, other times when it is just sitting in front of me and I am not doing anything with it.  I was worried it might be an overheating issue so I have kept it under a fan most of the time and raised it half up so it had ample airflow.  That being said, it rarely gets warm to the touch anyways.  None of these attempts have affected the frequency of restarting occurance.  In fact, I believe it is getting more frequent as time goes on. I have had my computer for just a month and a half.  I have only used it for very basic Word, Excel, Powerpoint and internet usage.  I have downloaded or installed very little.  There was a large windows 10 update not too long ago.  I don't think the problem started until after the update. The entire time my computer has been covered by McAfee antivirus.

Hey, I recently got a new Dell Laptop. It's nearly a month old and I've been having issues with the system randomly shutting down on me and automatically rebooting up again after its shut down, Which I suppose is more like a restart.

Anyone have any idea why it's doing this, up to a few times a day since my laptop is on for at least 12 hours. It could be overheating, but it doesn't feel that hot at the time it restarts. Is there a possible setting that may be turned on or something that makes it automatically restart every now and then that I should look for or change? I wouldn't be surprised since it's new that there may be automatic settings that need changing or something.

It doesn't put up a warning or anything before it restarts it just does it at anytime, which is particularly annoying if i'm in the middle of something and it dies, so I'm constantly having to save work.

I've got a few years warranty on it if I need to take it back for repairs. But it'd be much easier if i can figure it out here and now rather than wait for it to be put in for repairs for a few weeks and then get it back =S.

Answer:New Dell laptop is shutting down for no obvious reason?

It sounds like a heat issue. heat will make a system shut down fast. Make sure you are running this on a hard surface; not on the carpet, on the bed, or other soft surfaces. Get a cooling pad and tell us if the issue persists. Check the vents to make sure there is no dust build-up.

Answer:packard bell laptop shuted down for no reason

You MUST take the laptop back to the vendor. The longer you wait, you may go beyond the warranty or refund privileges that apply in your country. The retail refund rule is not the same as the warranty of the manufacturing. The retail warranty maybe be very short, but gives you greater power to ask nor a full refund.

Hello, I have an Acer Aspire 3000 laptop running Windows XP that runs painfully slow - not all the time, but at least 75% of the time. 5 minute waits for a window to open is not uncommon. I have run a full virus scan (Kaspersky 2010) - 13 hours later and nothing found. I have defragmented the C: drive (Piriform Defraggler) - 10 hours later there's no improvement. I have run Autoruns and found nothing suspicious. It just seems like it's always doing something else, something I can't see.

The hard drive is divided into 2 partitions, each a little over 17 GB. C: is 80% full (about 3 GB free) and D: is mostly empty. I have moved files over to D: and deleted unnecessary files wherever possible, to no effect.

I have run out of ideas here, and I would greatly appreciate any help or ideas. Thanks in advance

Answer:Painfully slow laptop - no obvious reason

Slowness and performance issues as you describe are not uncommon, especially with older computers. Since we're not finding any malware, please refer to Slow Computer/Browser? Check here first; it may not be malware. There are reasons for slowness and poor performance besides malware - i.e. disk fragmentation, disk errors, corrupt system files, too many startup programs, unnecessary services running, too many browser Add-ons/toolbars, failure to clear browser cache, not enough RAM, dirty hardware components, etc. As you use your system it becomes filled with more files/programs and has a natural tendency to slow down so cleaning and regular maintenance is essential. when i use it for a while i experience sudden shutdown, what could be the problem?

Answer:Any reason for gateway laptop sudden shutdown

It could be heat. If this is a laptop, try it on a hard surface, laptop really does not do well on laps or beds. You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane. If all else fails, read instructions.

I need your help again. About a week ago, my laptop started beeping intermittently for no apparent reason. Also I just got the XP SP2 update disk, and I wanted to do a thorough system cleaning before installing this.

I am not sure if the "beeping" problem is Malware related or if it is a hardware issue.

I ran the "README FIRST..." sticky steps as follows:

System Restore is on.
Ran CCleaner, MS Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool, Ad-Aware, SypBot, CounterSpy in Safe Mode.
Ran Bitdefender and Panda ActiveScan in Safe Mode with Networking Support.
CounterSpy detected 3 malware issues. One of the them relates to the JMail component (from DIMAC) that I have been using for my custom built applications, and I did not quarantine this component, since I really need it. Is there any way that CounterSpy may have misinterpreted this component as being malware? None of the other programs had an issue with this component.
Also I noticed numerous registry entries related to Logitech, and I wonder if this normal, and if there is a way to clean my registry.
Also I just notice a Destop.ini file on my desktop with the following entry:
Windows Media [email protected]:\WINDOWS\inf\unregmp2.exe,-4
Is this normal?

Attach you will find the various log files, including the CounterSpy log with malware issues referred to above.

The HJT log will follow next.

Thanks in advance for your help!

I have an asus u46e laptop running windows 7 and the monitor goes blank at irregular intervals for no apparent reason. Sometimes I can be doing something on the computer and at other times it is while viewing a video. Moving the mouse restores the screen, but only for a short time until it happens again. I have changed the power settings and screen saver settings to no avail. The screen just keeps going blank randomly. Can anybody help.

Thanks...Pete Burns

Answer:Music/sounds coming from my laptop 4 no reason...

This individual had the problem and here if what he did to clean up.

I came across a forum posts describing files called "rootkits." A rootkit installs itself on your system and accesses your administrator privileges. This way, it can control parts of your system (e.g., hide from your anti-virus software and disable new anti-virus software that might kill it). Rootkits are hard to find... most people suggest reformatting your entire hard drive to get rid of them, but I'm in Madrid, Spain right now and without all my files I'm screwed so I had to find another way. It took me several hours to figure out how.

It is, indeed, a pain to remove, but after a few trial-and-error steps I manged to clean up my machine.

Here's what I did:

Absolutely first, make sure you TURN OFF SYSTEM RESTORE. Otherwise the nasty little digital bloodsuckers will keep coming back to life. You can turn it back on when your machine is clean.

1) Downloaded Malware Bytes' Anti-Virus, a super and easy-to-use little tool that turned out to be way better than my Spyware Doctor even. Here's a link: Malwarebytes : Malwarebytes Anti-Malware PRO removes malware including viruses, spyware, worms and trojans, plus it protects your computer. Download, and try and install and run it. If you get away with it good for you, you might be able to save yourself some hassle. If not, don't worry, it just confirms that you're probably dealing with a rootkit. (Now that it sees Malwarebytes it knows it's... Read more

My girlfriend bought an Asus 15634 Laptop back in early October, and recently the computer has been rebooting for no apparent reason. It's happened three or four times in the past week or so (two times were within an hour of each other). She'll be doing some work and right in the middle of it the computer will restart. Note, my username says Windows 7 but as it is my gf's computer... she is using Windows 8.

It just happened this morning so I looked at the Event Logs to see if there was an explanation. There was a Kernal-Power event-ID 41, which basically says the system rebooted incorrectly but doesn't specify why ("The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.") There aren't any other critical or warning events that I can see leading up to it, but maybe there's something there I'm missing.

I don't think it's the battery as it has restarted while being plugged in, and she never downloads anything off the internet so I don't think it's malware. I don't think there have been any major system changes recently either, this is her first Windows computer and frankly I don't think she has any clue how to change anything manually anyway. Are there any diagnostic tests I can run to try to narrow down the problem? Thanks a lot.

My Mum bought a Toshiba Satellite Pro from Ideal World. I set it up for her but she didn't use it as my dad was in hospital. When he came out I turned it on to show my dad and the screen was cracked. We contacted Toshiba who just say, "We accept that your mother did nothing but the screen isn't covered by the warranty". We then contacted Ideal World, who took it back and then returned it saying, "No inherent fault". My mum is 79 years old and honest. She could have returned the laptop to Ideal World as they have a 30 day money back guarantee- she could have claimed that any damage occurred in the return transit. She didn't because a) she's honest and B) she knew that she had done nothing to the laptop so believed in the integrity of the companies she was dealing with! Now she is left with a useless laptop, which she will need to spend money on to use. Before we work out what our next move is I wondered if anybody else had a similar problem at all? Thanks!

Answer:Anybody else have a Toshiba Laptop where the screen has cracked for no reason?

This is an impossible one to advise on really... you probably know that.
Normally screens crack for a reason... tight hinges and being twisted when opened etc, or pressure or weight on the lid (screen) having been applied at some point... which you say hasn't happened. Or the lid closed on some object left on the keypad etc.
I can only think of two courses of action...
If you are certain nothing has happened to the laptop then be prepared to seek an independent inspection with a company that would put in writing their findings... which you will have to pay for. That may reveal if there was some problem such as an incorrectly fitted screen (under mechanical stress etc). And before you do that notify the company whom your contract of sale is with... that's Ideal World, not Toshiba, telling them what you are doing and that based on the results of the inspection you are prepared to take proceedings against them. If you are 100% certain that the screen failed due to a manufacturing defect you have to tough it out... and prove it.
And secondly, before you do anything perhaps seek professional advise from somewhere first. Although you have rights you may be asked to prove the fault was present from new... which it wasn't.
Ultimately it's very unusual for a screen to just crack... that's not to say it can't happen... but I guess it would be the one in a million that had. Which it might have done :)
Good luck and let us know how you get on.

With everything plugged in, I switch a laptop on today, and although the light on the power supply, and the light on the actual laptop itself both come on (just above the keyboard), nothing happens at all-the hard drive makes no sound, I get a blank black screen. After waiting for what seems like forever, I slide out the battery block to force a switch off. After restarting, no issues, everything works as normal. Its not an old system, around 2008, and as far as I know I was the last to use it, so was switched off correctly the night before. Could this be the first sign of a failing msi power supply, or (at worst) failing hard drive? Everything is backed up, but if it continues to work, was an odd occurance... ;( what do you think would be best to do? thanks

Answer:most likely reason laptop doesnt switch on, yet with all the lights functioning-hd or psu?

I've had the same problem with my Evesham laptop.
I think the poor old thing just gets confused (like me!) and I really can't be bothered trying to sort it out. It's only happened a couple of times in six years so I'm not too worried about it.

I'm at a complete loss to explain this one and it is incredibly frustrating. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I own a Sony Vaio laptop and after 6 1/2 years use and plenty of installations/uninstalliations, malware issues, running all the major registry/malware/virus cleaners, it came to the point where it was taking 12-15 minutes to start-up and open an internet page and it would frequently get overloaded if several things were running at the same time...would freeze...then crash. (at least that seemed logical!)

So I finally got around to a reformat...following the textbook advice of online forums. I saved the necessary files (scanning them before they went), I downloaded the XP service packs +AVG +Spybot +ZoneAlarms Firewall. Then I disconnected from the internet and used the Vaio disks to reformat. (It only prompted me to use 3 of the 4 discs, not sure if that is of any relevance.)

Before reconnecting the internet I installed just AVG and the service packs, set the Windows Firewall and rebooted. I then immediately ran AutoUpdate and installed 31 of the recommended 32 packs (leaving out IE7 update and downloading Firefox instead). Everything was going smoothly, start-up now taking less than a minute, a whole lot quicker and able to run video sites etc.

Then, with no warning, no freezing of the mouse cursor, no dramatic slowdown of the programmes, no manically noisy running or rapidly blinking hard drive just crashed. I turned it back on and thi... Read more

Answer:newly reformatted laptop crashing for no apparent reason

Eliminating software issue would be the first thing I do. Do another reinstall, if the computer shuts down during the reinstallation of OS would indicate a definite hardware problem. If this is the case, I would recommend downloading a diagnostic CD to test hard drive and RAM;, and see if it comes up with any errors.

Answer:newly reformatted laptop crashing for no apparent reason

Considering that your Sony VAIO(you didn't mention the model number) is 6-1/2 years old, using the 4-CD recovery/restore kit isn't the way that I would've started over because it reverted your laptop back to a very outdated condition.

I would've used an actual Windows XP SP2 CD to format the hard drive and then do a fresh install of the operating system and then update from that point.

And I would've first obtained the current driver versions for the display adapter, sound device, network adapters(wired and wireless) and burned them off to a CD-R before starting.

Also considering that it's 6-1/2 years old and it suddenly crashed without any warning, it's possible that the hard drive has crapped out.

What happened to you sort of parallels what happened to me with my HP Pavilion N5495 laptop a few years ago when the hard drive crapped out when it was about 3-1/2 years old and shortly after I formatted and did a fresh install.

My situation is a little bit hard to explain but I'll try to tell you the best I can; about 3 days ago my father cut the power to the house too replace a bathroom light without getting electrocuted. Ever since then my laptop has been playing up in all sorts of ways, most notably the poor internet connection (hence why I put this thread in the network area because I'm not too sure what's going on with it at all).

To sum up it's problems quickly: certain things tend to take a lot of time on it. Plugging in memory sticks, opening up new Windows, even the Internet. I do know that it isn't my family's wifi that is the problem, all our other devices work and my laptop has the same trouble with my school's Internet (also because it isn't only my wifi being effected). I also know that it's not memory or CPU related.

It pretty much turned from a pretty decent laptop of it's age to the slowest computer in the world within an hour.

Anyone what the problem is, or do I need to give anymore detail?

Answer:Limited access to wifi and more for unknown reason (laptop)

Ok, now the Internet has fully stopped working and some apps crash when opened.

My recent post about this unit running hot and the screen graying out or going black has reoccurred and is frustrating. I ran the the laptop for over 50 hours non-stop, using it, running videos, playing music practically and after applying thermo compound the unit was running at only 47-49 degrees celsius. It never shut off, grayed or anything. All HDD diagnostics performed indicated a good hard drive, nothing wrong. In a word, it was running perfect. Power options all set not to shut off.

I took the computer this afternoon to the owner's house. She sets the unit on a hard counter top that is cool and away from any humidity or heat. We turned it on and it was running perfectly. Then, an hour or so later, I get a call that the unit is doing the same thing all over again. As I have mentioned, here in my house it runs perfectly. Started last night, my 1 year 2 month old M5 suddenly started typing iiiii almost as if the key had stuck down, but its not physically stuck (that I can see). Problem persists even after a reboot. I'm hoping its just a "stuck" key. Anyone else experienced / heard of this and can it be cleared with a blast of cleaning air or is a keyboard off job (or even something more sinister like a virus; checkers and firewall all up to date and active though)? Laptop is running XP.

Thanks in advance

Then don't bother with this topic. I want to FIX my problem, not hear about how your laptop with a half-eaten apple printed on the side is so powerful and fast you could take over Russia with it.Okay, so I got my laptop in Sept 2011 (specs below). Today's date is March 3, 2012. In between now and when I first got my laptop, I have experienced this problem twice (and a few minor times that weren't as bad). What will happen, is I boot up my laptop one night and it runs PERFECTLY - super fast, smooth, and quiet (it doesn't make a bunch of "loading" sounds). The very next day, I will boot up my laptop, and (for no logical reasoning) it takes FOREVER to boot up; then once it boots up it lags (typing lags, frame rates lag, etc.) and it sounds like it's trying to have a baby (loud "loading noises", etc.). This "slow-mode" will go on for a random period, then eventually speed up again. Since everything is so random, it's hard to determine what's going on. A good way to describe my slow-mode is that my laptop acts like someone took out ALL my RAM and it's trying to move along but ... Read more

I had been working on the computer for about 3 hours in the lab and there were no issues untill now.  I checked  the power outlet  and it was plugged in. I tried another outlet and it began to charge again. Later that day the same thing happened. The computer battery was draining even though the laptop was plugged in. I continued on my report trying to finish it for the day before it drained the battery. Just as I finished and closed the report, a battery power warning came up and the laptop eventually died. Dear all, Before you consider getting lenovo laptop, pls read my experience before you proceed to 'happily get' one. On 26th Dec 2010, I bought a laptop for my boyfriend for his work/entertainment purpose. To our horror, exactly 1 month later, which is today, the LED panel cracked internally leaving a long line from the top left all the way to the right. The line is like a big 'C'. We took the day off to the service centre, only to be rejected by the staff there that LED panel is not covered under warranty n as such, we are being dismissed by the person who handled our case. Only when I insisted that he help to escalate this to Lenovo that he took out a form n filled in some details like serial number and brief description ' LED crack'. He further implied that we had damaged the laptop n insisted that it is manufacture fault. And said that he often encounter such cases. We had left the laptop on a table, unused for 2 days. How would we do damage to a laptop when we are not using it, n left it on table? We have no children or pets. So can't suspect 3rd party damage from that aspect. We was at the service centre at around 11am, n only at 5pm did we receive a call from the customer service department ( from Malaysia) that the management had reviewed n declined support to my unit. When I request to speak with someone else higher up the chain, I was told that she is the person assigned to handle my case, n no management will speak with me. Decision is final. Can you take a photo of the damage? Once before I saw an LCD that arrived truly internally cracked. The ink was in a perfect circle, writing off any user fault. In the worst case situation, it might be worthwhile to call Lenovo and purchase a new screen. If you purchase one through them, you can get warranty support for the new screen. I realize that is a terrible alternative, as you should not have to invest more money, but it is the cheapest route to get a functioning LCD.

I have projectors that connect with VGA port only.
I purchased hdmi to vga adapters and when I connect to the laptop the image will jump from the laptop to the projector and jump back to the laptop and it will continue to do this over and over.
There are no error messages. on either. These are working projectors. These are new hdmi/vga adapters.
I have tried to change resolution to lower settings and I have tried to lower refresh rates. The projector can support all of what resolutions the laptop has for settings thus the image does show for a second on the projector. These are smartboard/projector 600 series. I have also tried swapping our the adapters that didn't work either. I have also tried making the resolution settings shutting down laptop , connect the hdmi/vga adapter and turn the laptop back on and the issue is still the same. I can't find any posts/forums on this issue to date.

Answer:HDMI to VGA adapter connected to laptop to a project image jumps from laptop to projector and back and forth

I am not aware of any issues with the 17r using external monitors.   I would suggest trying to narrow down the problem and go from there.   I certainly understand that you may not have all the devices present but if you do I would try to verify if this is problem with HDMI on the notebook, a problem with the adapters, or the monitors.
Basic steps, try running the notebook under power saving or high performance in the Nvidia control panel. The system is  an optimus and it would be interesting to find if the problem only occurs with the integrated Intel GPU (power saving) or the Nvidia GPU (high performance).  If you aren't familiar with configuring Optimus the following document may help.
Uninstall and reinstall video drivers.  Download the latest Intel and Nvidia video drivers for your model of notebook from Download the drivers and save them to the desktop, please don't install them yet.  Uninstall the Intel and Nvidia driver and software from the system and reboot.  Now install the drivers, with the Intel driver first, followed by the Nvidia driver.
If possible connect the notebook to a HDMI monitor, something that doesn't require the use of any adapters and see if the problem continues.  Verify if the HDMI ports is working at all on the notebook.
If it looks like video is working fine on the notebook, and HDMI works well. Test the HDMI to VGA adapters.  If possible try them on ... Read more
