510-15ISK - Erratic mouse behavior

Question: 510-15ISK - Erratic mouse behavior

I have just purchased a brand new Ideapad 510-15 15K running W10 with no external mouse.

The pad mouse at times is extremely erratic.

Before I take the laptop back to the shop for repair or replacement is there a work around to solve this problem which makes the laptop nearly unusable?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Troubleshooting a fairly new HP laptop. Had been infected with a virus. Cleaned it all up but was experiencing erratic mouse behavior. The customer claimed the behavior started when he got hit with infection. While the pointer itself moves fine the left and right mouse buttons intermittently act like they are being held down causing the pointer to drag and highlight everything in site. At other times the buttons do nothing at all. At other times the left mouse button triggers a rightclick menu. And at other moments all mouse control is fine. This occurs equally on the touchpad or when using an external USB mouse. I tried disabling the touchpad completely but the problem still occurs when using the external mouse. I tried updating the sypatics touchpad driver but that made no difference either. I finally resorted to wiping and completely reinstalling windows but the problem still persists. For the hell of it I then updated the BIOS firmware but that made no difference either. All keyboard function work fine so I have been having to resort to using the arrow keys and alt tab and such to navigate around. I ran a Passmark Burn in Test and everything passed.
A couple of additional points. I ran the Hirens Boot CD which is similar to the Ultimate Boot CD. I then booted into the Mini Windows XP and the same erratic mouse behavior occured so this is clearly not an operating system issue. Also when I wiped and reloaded Windows I used the HP Recovery partition and ran thei... Read more

I have a Thinkpad Yoga 14 (bought from BestBuy) which I understand is identical to Thinkpad Yoga 460.  I have been using it for the last few weeks and everything was fine. In the past few days, the mouse has started behaving erratically.  Specifically: When I drag a window to move it, the mouse loses its grip half way through the motion, and then re-activates itself.  When it does that, the window I was moving stops, and the mouse clicks on (or selects) whatever happens to be below where the mouse cursor is at that moment. When I try to select some words or a paragraph in an editor, the mouse will reset itself and my selection gets reset.  I have try over and over again just to select some text (so I can do copy/paste, etc.).  Again, sometimes it will reactivate itself halpfway and select (or auto click on) random and unrelated stuff. Now, normally I am not moving the mouse very fast, or very slow.  I have varied the speed and movement but to no avail. I see this behavior with an external USB mouse (on different surrfaces), with the trackpad and trackpoint, as well as the touchscreen. It started recently and it is infuriating to say the least.  Lenovo Companion says everything is up to date and I haven't updated anything in the last couple of weeks. Has anyone seen this behavior?  I would be grateful for any recommendation to solve this issue. Thanks!

I strongly suspect malware since mouse problems began about same time pc was infected with malware and FakeHDD virus. Avira, Ad-aware, and Malwarebytes all report clean system now, however mouse still acts erratically (a simple click will often act as double-click opening multiple windows wherever the pointer was resting, drag and drop almost impossible to accomplish, etc).

I booted to safe mode, uninstalled mouse drivers, then using keyboard deleted mouclass.sys and mouhid.sys. I then scanned for hardware changes and allowed drivers to be reinstalled. Is this the correct way to reinstall the mouse drivers? Where is the system reinstalling the drivers from? The mouse behavior is still present, so, assuming malware is the culprit, I am not confident that I am performing the reinstall correctly.

fyi: mouse configuration doesn't seem to be connected with the erratic behavior.

Any input appreciated, Thks.

In the last 48 hours or so, my optical mouse is showing bizzare behavior, especially if I am playing free cell and I try to move cards by clicking on them. Also, when I click on certain menu buttons on some web sites, it also takes several attempts to open the menu with the mouse. Is this a hardware problem or is it in windows settings? Should I try replacing the mouse or could it be something else. Any help with this issue would be most appreciated. Thank you Kevin

Answer:Erratic Optical Mouse Behavior

Sounds like the mouse may be dying. Can you at least borrow a replacement to see if it's as simple as bad switches?

About a month, month and a half ago I started experiencing my Logitech G5 mouse just turn off and then after a random amount of time turn back on. Doesn't not make for a good scenario when gaming especially in clutch moments.

The mouse is five years old and the fabric around the cord has frayed away and some of the plastic sheathing has stripped away as well. I'm figuring the the cord had a short in it. So I order a new mouse.

My new mouse a Cyborg R.A.T. 5. I must have gamed with the mouse for about a week, week and a half and then it started exhibiting similar behavior. It would turn off and not turn back on. I'd have to unplug the USB plug and then wait a few seconds and plug it back in. Some times it would work, sometimes it would not.

I've done the following:

Full virus scan with nothing foundMove the mouse (both of them) to the other three ports on the back of the PC and even the front two ports. Same behavior.100% up to date drivers and softwareSearched fruitlessly for a solution

Any of the other devices plugged in act fine! And those devices would be a web cam (not in use), printer (not in use) and my keyboard.

I've attached my msinfo32 file. I had to pair down the windows errors and program hangs back to December. If you need the whole file just let me know.

msinfo32 .txt

I'm super grateful for any help! Cause this is really un-nerving!

I have these light colored circles in the upper to middle left part of the screen and my mouse keeps jumping to these dots and I have virtually no control of my mouse. Is there a real solution to this problem as I have already hundreds of posts about it but no apparent actual fix.

Extremely annoying mouse behavior.

Lenovo T520
8GB memory
W7 64
SSD by Intel
Wireless MS mouse
Wired MS keyboard
Wired HP 425 printer

Sometimes a wireless mouse will work just fine and then it will get erratic. Moving the mouse is very laggy (like you're playing an online game and the server is being hammered). Actually clicking something on a page is very difficult and very very annoying as it is so time consuming.

It doesn't happen all the time and I can't pinpoint anything that is taxing the system and making the CPU crawl.

At this point, I have a wired trackball and it appears to be working fine, but if history proves itself my wife will start working and it will staring messing up again.

Main applications that are run are
Adobe Acrobat X
Internet connection is wired...

Maybe some sort of driver problem? I have uninstalled and installed the mouse. This happens with ANY wireless mouse.
It's not happening right now w/this trackball...but I expect it to.

Answer:Erratic Mouse behavior / Lenovo T520

I would try re downloading the software for the mouse and reinstalling it that way and see what happens.

I have noticed this in the last few days. Mostly on FaceBook and reddit. When I am viewing a FB photo in an album and click the left or right arrow to advance to the next image, the next image displays. Then the mouse cursor flashes briefly and the folder advances to the next image. On reddit, when I click the plus sign on the box that expands the image, the image enlarges for a few seconds and then closes again.
I'm also noticing some strange activity in my browser ~ Chrome. I sometimes have to click the back button several times before the previous page will load. When viewing links at, I have to double click the back button to view the previous page. Single clicking only refreshes the same page.
I notice this only seems to be an issue with Chrome. I've updated to the most recent version and also updated Windows. I've disabled any plugins that might affect mouse functionality ~ as far as I know. I've also tried several different mice, both wired and wireless.
These are just a few issues I'm having right now. My system has been running very slow with long load times and strange surfing behavior. But the mouse problem is the most annoying. Not sure if this is a Chrome issue, a browser bug or an infection. I would love to have my system scanned to see if this or any other issues turn up.
I'm running Windows 7 SP1
Chrome Version 36.0.1985.143 m
4GB DDR2 (PC2-6400) Ram

Joe Rockhead here. I've tried anti-virus, anti-spyware, anti-perspirant... Whatever has got me won't even allow me to Restore to a previous date. The mouse pointer gets stuck in a corner or goes right when you want it to go left. All while opening, closing and disabling files and other applications. It is soooo frustrating. I wish I could just reformat the hard drive(s) but I have too many software apps. that I would not be able to replace or re-install. Help, please! It was attacking me while trying to post this distress call. I have attached a HijackThis Log file.

Everything will be working perfectly fine in my laptop, until at some point my mouse starts acting wierd. I am able to move the curser around but I am unable to click and interact with everything on the screen. I am able to open the start menu, but I am not able to minimise it. I am able to maximise the various items stacked on my taskbar, but I am not able to minimise them again by clicking the minimise button (neither am I able to close it. The title bar turns a different color when I try clicking on any of the 3 buttons) and I am also not able to select anything in the start menu with my mouse. This does not happen every time I start my laptop though. Sometimes its like this and at other times its all OK. I tried connecting my wired logitech mouse in different port but the result is the same. When this happens both the mouse and the trackpad have the same issue, so I am guessing this is not a hardware issue. I usually come out of this situation by using my keyboard to put my system to sleep and usually when I come out of my sleep a minute later the problem would be temporarily solved (the issue may come back in a few minutes or it may not come back at all).

(I would also like to mention that all this problem started after I tried to tinker with some of the options under "Human Interface Devices" and "mice and other pointing devices" in the device manager. And this I did because I faced some problems with a new wireless mouse which I bought the other da... Read more

OK, I see there are a myraid of posts concerning this issue, but no fixes. Even the HP employee gave a link that does nothing and appears broken. I purchased and installed 8GB RAM and that didn't fix it. What a waste of money. And for HP to ignore all the posts about the problem is, frankly, disingenuine, reckless and bad business. There simply MUST be a fix or workaround for this.  IF I HAVE TO BUY A NEW COMPUTER, IT WILL NOT BE AN HP. Are you hearing me, HP? My statement says a lot. I have been computing for 21 years and only ever bought HP or Compaq. I use the computer for business and the state my computer is in currently is far from a shining example of streamlined productivity. Double, triple, quadruple clicking on single click stuff, no response clicking, clicks bring up multiple duplicate windows, click for new tab and 2 tabs pop up, insert or remove SD card nets low keyboard battery warning and on and on and on. What's going on? WHAT IS THE FIX? EDIT: as with most users, this all started with the Win10 upgrade last Fall.

I've had my laptop for a little over 4 months. I primarily use a wireless mouse with it...and every so often the mouse will take on a mind of its own. I can be typing or even trying to use the mouse and it will start jumping all over the screen on its own...selecting things...even switching/moving windows as if buttons are being pressed as well. At first I thought maybe it was interference with the I've tried both disabling the touchpad when the external mouse is plugged in...and disabling the touchpad altogether and the issue still occurs. So then I thought maybe the mouse is the issue, so at one point when it wents nuts on me, I turned it off and switched over to the touchpad...but the erratic behavior continued. The only thing I can do to fix it is to reboot...and then things are typically okay for several days before the issue starts up again. Any thoughts on what the issue maybe, or troubleshooting tips?

This worked  -  DELL  has  a terrible touchpad  - this is  a hardware issue ONLY that affects  the 3000 , 4000, 5000 and 7000 series .  I bought a screen protector from the dollar store for a dollar, this worked where all software solutions had failed.

Hi everyone!
Like you I have been having all the same touchpad issues. At first I thought it was ESD and troubleshot that for a few days. I finally concluded that it had nothing to do with ESD and moved on to possible driver issues. I installed every driver pack I could find, modified them, turned off driver signing in order to install the OEM drivers, used Windows 7, 8, 8.1, Ubuntu etc... but to no avail.
From the onset, some sort of physical problem seemed to be the most logical conclusion. The question was just what! I couldn't believe that synaptics could make such an aweful touchpad that was incapable of actually working. I made the assumption moving forward that the issue had to be caused by something small. During my last clean install of Windows 8.1 I noticed that the default windows driver caused the touchpad to be EXTREMELY sensitive. You'll notice that once you install Dell's latest driver the cursor movement calms down considerably. The touchpad is still extremely sensitive, the driver is just taking all that raw input and generalizing it into a more... Read more

Question: Erratic behavior

The last few days the computer has been very erratic. I'll try to explain what is happening but am not sure I will be able to adequately explain it.

First, and I don?t know this has anything to do with my problems, but every time I reboot the computer I get the following message or warning ? GarminLifetime.exe-.NET Framework Initialization error, and then goes on with other info. If I click OK it closes, so don?t know this has anything to do with the other problems I have been experiencing.

I burn DVDs all the time without any problems. A couple of days ago I was authoring a DVD and part way through the output received an error message stating the system was low on resources even though the only thing running was Outlook Express. There is 350 GB free on the hard drive and I have 4 GB of RAM. I rebooted the computer and didn?t start anything else, just the DVD authoring program however got the same error message.

Most of the time when I click on a link in an e-mail the IE window opens but it just sits there with the hour glass and the webpage never appears. If you try to close the window it won?t close. You have to use task manager to end the task. When you try to open a new IE window sometimes it goes to the home page, other times it just seems to hang and again you can?t close the window without using task manager.

The system seems to bog down with only a few windows open when in the past I have had two or three times as many windows open.

When I ran GMER the first... Read more

ok i'm freaking out here

First I get the NTLDR is missing one most of my drives with 2 that say NTLDR is compressed and use boot disk
Before I attempt to reinstall Windows XP Home SP2

It gets to Windows prompt
I type Exit
It asks me about autochk.exe path
So I tell it the path in system32
It tells me it cannot find it but its there

I try another drive
I get Windows on
After a few minutes whatever internet windows i have on closes down and erratic behavior goes on with XP menu opening and LOG OFF menu
So I check task manager and I use like 3-4 different virus scanners and spyware scanners and nothing is found on any of them

Ive used memory boosters and trying to check my ram and used chkdsk

I have 5 drives I have NTLDR is missing with discs that are legal and mine

Reinstalled Windows after partitioning and formatting them as well
First of all I thought it was the windows updates or internet exploder updates
So the second reinstall i didnt update
The same thing happened

What else could it be and how can i clear this up?

Chkdsk thorough found some bad clusters on 2722 and fixed them
But that didnt eliminate my issue

Hello there, my first post here

Ok let's get on with it.

I have seen this subject on a couple of other threads on other websites, but i haven't figured out a way to salvation yet.

I just bought a new PC...

I get erratic mouse movement and sound is choppy most of the time. At the same time, i noticed that it does that when my drive light (orange) blinks. Looks like it's doing something but it's hard to say. Booting up takes a little too much time i think, installing software also.

That blinking light thing doesn't always happen, but is mostly always triggered by opening or closing a window, software...etc. And when it does, it stays blinking for a good while.

When i watch the drive light, everytime i see it blink (even when idle, it blinks every 2 secs), i get a chop in sound, mouse movement, overall performance.

I remember having the same problem at work a while ago, and the tech guy had made it all better (to my amazement) in very little time and effort. Sadly I can't remember what it was. Maybe just a setting on the HD or a memory thing, i don't know.

I tried installing the video drivers and sound drivers.

Win XP professional 2002 SP2(french version)
Intel Pentium PD CPU 3.20GHz
(Supposedly a PD 945 LGA775 Dual-Core)

NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GS

ANY help would be appreciated,

Answer:Erratic behavior in XP

Sounds like you are having lots of trouble. Since you are saying the hard drive is always busy, and the system is laggy, I suspect the hard drive is the main problem here.

First, run a chkdisk (myComputer>(right-click the drive)>properties>tool>error checking
Also run a disk defragmentation.

The hard drive could be causing your system to be sluggish because windows relies on it for its virtual memory.

If the above steps don't work, try returning your pc to where you bought it from. Since you said it was new, I should still be under some type of a warrenty, so it can proboly be repaired for free.

Best of luck,

Question: Erratic Behavior

I'd appreciate any help that anyone can provide:The problem started slowly, and gradually got worse. When I turn my computer on, it doesn't seem to do anything - the hard drive and CD lights come on, the fans come on, but the startup process doesn't seem to happen.  Then, after 5 - 20 minutes (if I'm lucky), it may begin the startup process (ie. the Windows XP loading screen).  However, the keyboard may or may not work, and if it does, it may only work for a while.I've tried new keyboards, mice, and monitors to rule them out (everything else like printers unplugged).  I've tried it in different outlets also to rule that out.  My laptop computer hooked up to my keyboard and monitor works in the same outlet.I took the computer in for repair, and they found nothing since it worked perfectly fine for them.So I took it to a friends house, where it didn't work at first, then did after a while.Still didn't work at home.Took it to another computer repair place, where it worked fine.Does anyone have any ideas?  Someone suggested the power supply ... but why would the computer only not work at my house and occasionally at my friends?(Pentium IV, 1.8 Ghz, 512 MB RAM, Win XP)Thanks in advance.

Answer:Erratic Behavior

Sounds like gremlins.Do you have anything to risk by a reformat? Something to think about. So it works fine everywhere else, but not at your house. And that is ALWAYS the case or it is intermittent even at your house?

Within the last 7-10 days I have been experiencing cursor movement without touching the mouse. It seems that it's becoming more and more extreme--traveling all over the screen at will.

My computer is a DELL Inspiron 8600 notebook running XP Pro. The mouse is a Logitech Optical mouse with cord (2 button mouse with scroll wheel). I have used the mouse for over one year and never before encountered the problems I am seeing with it now. One solution that I was told about was to go to "Run" and type "Control Mouse" and click "Pointer Options" and uncheck "Enhance Pointer precision" under "Motion." However, this action had no bearing on the problem whatever.

This comes at the most inconvenient time with an intense workload for the coming two weeks which requires much use of the computer. (I am sure many of you can identify with this kind of dilemma). Even now the cursor (without touching the mouse) is going nuts!

Any assistance that could be provided would be most gratefully appreciated.

I had that with a previous laptop too, the only way to solve that was to turn off the internal pointing device (touchpad). Perhaps (and if possible on a Dell laptop) this may help you too...

Alright I've got a rather annoying problem with my computer. What seems to be going on is that, every once in a while when i click on a link or any such thing the internet window (and only the window, not the internet itself) will close completely. At first this only happened with the internet but it now also seems to affect computer games... actually my computer dosent even bother to ask me if i want to send an error report as it usually does... i have already tried to stop this by getting rid of what i thoguht was the virus (msn virus) but it didnt quite work out as well as the person who u guys were assisting. I have a very remote user (South Africa) that is utilizing Vodafone wireless for internet connectivity. Bandwidth was passible for a long time until recently and they have been experiencing serious latency, even with all browser and programs closed. They are using Norton 360 (which I hate) and we had them run a full Malware Bytes scan and found nothing. I can't even setup a remote session as the bandwidth is so pegged I cannot connect. I had them send me some resource monitor stats and there is some strange network behavior going on. I had them run HijackThis and see a few strange things but I'm not really sure. If you see anything, appreciate any advice you can give.

Win XP sp2 on RAID0 drive

On boot the BIOS sometimes IDs the 2 drives on IDE1. C: drive almost always but D: only about half the time. Even when BIOS sees the D: drive it occasionally does not appear in My Computer once Windows loads. Rescanning (under "disk management") makes no difference. Sometimes on boot up I get the light blue screen telling me I need to check disk D: or cancel by hitting any key within 9 sec. Sometimes D; checks out fine and sometimes the check results are that all folders are unreadable. If I skip the disk check, sometimes D: is present in My Computer and sometimes it's not. When it's present, it performs fine and error checking finds no problems. Sometimes D: is present in My Computer upon initial boot but is not when I look later.

The 2 optical drives on IDE2 have never been a problem.

Once the boot order of the IDE1 disks was reversed in the BIOS for no apparent reason.

I just replaced the BIOS battery without helping the problem. I had a Gig of cheap memory that I replaced with expensive memory without helping either.

A perhaps related issue: occasionally the computer will begin to "hang" (become unresponsive) for a few seconds every minute or so. During the hangs the disk drive is active. Task Manager hangs too so I can't ID what process is executing. I tried using Task Manager to close processes sequentially but none made any difference. Rebooting eliminates the probl... Read more

Answer:Erratic behavior on boot

It sounds like either the RAID controller is going flakey for some reason or your array is pooched. It is also possible that drive D is defective, but I would put my efforts into the array first before trying to diagnose the HDD. For one, get your data off the drives and for another don't use RAID 0. It is unreliable and a bad idea for a home user. It doesn't give you any extra performance either unless you are transferring large files. There is a very good review on StorageReview that confirms this, with Anandtech backing it up with their own findings.

EDIT: Oh hang on a second.. I think I read that wrong. C is your array, D is a separate drive. Geez, I have to wake up for pete's sake. Then yeah, the drive is probably failing. Sorry about that.

could I please piggyback here; this is an issue I thought had gone away many Windows7 updates ago but apparently not. I have a HP/Compaq "p" minitower windows 7 PRO x64, up to date, using a "genuine" Microsoft optical mouse and pedestrian keyboard - both wire-attached to usb ports [and I have moved them from one port to another trying to debug].
It being a 'desktop' I have it set to non-hybrid, no-hibernate Power plan settings. The mouse is set, as you have indicated to "allow" or "enable" wakeup the computer.

the wake behavior is erratic. pressing the mouse left-button or the enter key of the keyboard seems to start the wake process ok, but the mouse is unreliable no matter which port it is in [front/hub or rear]. Sometimes it will resume operation ok. other times the tracking function never returns. System must be restarted. Since there is only one entry for 'mouse' as regards power settings, I'm clueless as to how to remedy but let me ask....
In BIOS settings are options for S5 [by itself] or S3/S4 power management, or neither [both disabled]. Should I go with both disabled or is this a non-issue?

is there any chance that the wrong chipset driver for the root hub device is loaded? In my experience the answer is no... an incorrect model [chipset] driver package from Intel would bail if it does not identify the intended bridge components, right?

I do not know if this is telling or not, but the SATA-connected DVD ODD seems to get ... Read more

Hi there,I just got my Yoga 460 5 days ago and tonight while I was drawing in SAI, my pen started to click on things while I was just hovering over the screen. I checked to see that hover click, the touch driver(palm rejection), and all that were off, I wasn't accidentally pressing any buttons, and the pen was charged. I tried rebooting the computer and that didn't help either. What do I need to do to fix this? Is it a defective pen or a problem with software? Thanks in advance,Jessica Wetli

I'm running Windows 7 and IE10 and my browser is behaving erratically. Often webpages will fail to load on a first click, but then after a few tries they'll work. Could this be a Malware issue? Or is there another fix I could try?

Appreciate any help in advance.

Welcome to the Malware Removal Forum.

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Please follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

**** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
Helpful Notes:

If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:

Starting your computer in Safe mode

If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Hello techspot, you all havent heard from me since i set out on building this machine about a year ago. Well everythings been gravy since this past saturday night. My system specs should be up at the top right of this post btw.

I was using this year-old machine as usual that night, not even gaming, when for the first time it shut off on its own. On an attempt to reboot, the machine didnt reach the loading screen for vista before it shut itself off again. Not a restart, a straight up shut off. After trying to boot it up a couple more times to no avail, I went to the first logical diagnosis-it was overheating.

Now since this is a liquid cooling system for the cpu, solving this overheating seemed relatively easy. There is a radiator on the front of the case with two 12" fans blowing into it, forming the intake of the airflow throughout the case. These two fans are covered from the outside by drive bay covers, each with a foam-type material to allow airflow. I pulled these drive bay covers to find a thick layer of dust on the inside of each. I cleaned all of the dust off of each and started the machine without replacing the drive bay covers to ensure the radiator fans were unrestricted. I immediately noticed that the liquid cooling pump started gurgling and this gave me hope. The machine booted up fine and once i got it to the desktop, i messed around online for a bit and called it a night, seeing as it was about 3 am at that point.

The following day i di... Read more

Sorry for the vague subject line but I'm having trouble finding the right words to describe this problem.

Sometimes when I open an application, I get two instances of the application.

Also, when I click the Start button or a menu item on my IE browser, I see the expected result for a split second then it disappears. Sometimes, I don't see the expected result at all and have to click several times to see it. For example, I may have to click the Start button several times before it opens up my Start menu and sometimes I'll see the Start menu for a split second before it disappears and I have to try again.

I'm running Norton SystemWorks 2003 and have the latest virus definitions loaded. A scan shows no virus present. I've done a ScanDisk and defragged but nothing seems to help.

Any other ideas what may be causing this? It's getting kind of nerve wracking.

Perhaps you have your double click set a little too fast? Check out the mouse settings in Control Panel. Or perhaps you have it set to single click?

Greetings, For the last 6 months, I've noticed that my cursor would not react to my directions, and wanted to pull up to the top right hand corner of the screen. Simultaneously the screen would flicker a bit, and when I would try to move the cursor to shutdown the computer, the desktop icons would also flicker when the cursor would roll over them.  This would occur randomly after my laptop would be on for about an hour or within the first 20 minutes of being turned on. The only way to get it to stop would be to hold the power button down until the laptop shut itself off.  I would turn it back on and all would be okay.  And this erratic behavior would only happen about a third of the time that I use it.  From 6 months ago, it seems to be happening more frequently.  I know that if I could conduct a system restore  procedure to an earlier time, it might solve the issue? Problem there is my restore only goes back to three months ago.   The other problem is I purchased this computer with a Windows 7 OS.  I then switched to a Windows 10 OS when it became available to the public.  I unfortunately never backed up my laptop after I switched to Windows 10.   As well, I deleted a few programs from my start up list hoping that it would help with a faster start up. My mistake was not noting what programs they were. So, my gues... Read more

Hi, Before performing any other recovery thingy. Try to check if you have the right drivers for your computer. Erratic mouse behaviour is fixed most of the time by going to hp support and download the driver for your mouse. I believe its synaptics. If that didnt fix the problem then update the BIOS version of your computer. Regards

Hi all,
My new XPS 13 9365 is suffering from erratic touch pad behavior. Moving the pointer with a single finger works fine.  Using two fingers to scroll up or down does not work with a consistent behavior.
In Edge or Chrome the vertical scrolling will often zoom in the page or cause a link to be clicked on the page, or the pointer can jump around. Trying to scroll in Windows Explorer is very bad.
All drivers and BIOS are up to date from Dell's site.
Some gestures mentioned in the online manual do not work.  For example; Circular Scroll, and One Finger Zoom.
I do not see any touch pad configuration application beyond what is included in the Windows 10 Settings.
This is the second 9365 we have purchased with this issue.
Has anyone else experienced this or have a fix?

Thank you!

4GB GDDR3 1600 RAM running in Dual Channel
ASUS ATI Radeon 5870 1GB
ASUS MotherBoard
Windows is installed on an older IDE drive.
Games and files are installed on a newer SATA2 Drive.

This is an issue that has been occurring shortly after my Windows 7 was fully installed. After leaving my computer on for about 24 or so hours it would start behaving strangely.

Flash videos won't play online, Firefox does not start, I cannot open the small shutdown menu on the Start Menu (Meaning I can only shut the computer down). Video playback does not function correctly, opening up games may or may not work.

Rebooting fixes this issue. I know that all my computer parts are compatible, therefore I have determined this to be a software issue. Updating Windows 7 does not seem to fix the issue either. This also seems to occur at the same time every day (around 6PM) if the computer has been on for a certain amount of time.

I've never encountered anything so strange. The computer runs cool, and has never had any heat issues over the summer. I've also attached a DXDiag file.

My browser began to act up last night. I can be on any web page, typing a message (or not) and suddenly, the cursor goes to the address bar at the top of IE and the drop-down box begins FLASHING rapidly. The only way to make this stop is to either hit the BACKSPACE key to erase whatever is in the address bar or to hit the TAB key to get the cursor out of the address bar. Using the mouse pointer has absolutely no effect, including clicking on the CLOSE button at the top right of the window.Additionally, the same thing is happening when I'm using the Windows Explorer window address bar or the SAVE TO dialog box.Other strange, random things from programs installed on my computer have also started popping up. For example, while playing Spider, the statistics box will randomly pop up and I cannot close it. The only way to close the game (I think) is to terminate it in Windows Task Manager.Strangely, I cannot type a capital letter 'C' by using the right SHIFT key; but it does work with the left SHIFT key or if I put the CAPS LOCK on. There is no other letter affected by this problem. I can still type 'c', no matter what, except when I hold down the right SHIFT key -- then absolutely nothing happens.I also used System Restore to revert my system to a restore point before I began to observe these behaviors. It had no effect.I have followed all the instructions in the forum Intro page. I frequently run SpyBot S&D, AdAware, and I run my NSW AntiVirus program every night. ... Read more

I have Windows XP, SP2 on a Compaq computer with a Logitech cordless keyboard/mouse. Whenever the room temperature drops below 55 degrees, it's near impossible to get the computer to start. It goes straight to the setup bios. Tpically the computer will start after 3 or 4 tries of exiting the bios and attempting to reboot. The computer will operate fine until the room temperature is around 60 degrees.... then internet explorer will "jump" from full screen to normal size very rapidly and repeatedly. Pressing CTRL and ALT at the same time seem to be the only way to make it stop temporarily. This only happens with internet explorer, no other programs and only at about 60 degrees in the room... at 62 everything is fine and between 55 and 59 degrees everything is fine. The computer has done this since the day it was new. Is this the cordless keyboard or do I have another issue?

Answer:Erratic computer behavior when cold

I highly doubt this involves the computer hardware itself and the temperature of the room. Ideally, temperatures should be as low as possible (not feezing, of course) in order to keep the system cool. One of my friends has his room turned down to the point of him wearing a jacket in-doors. His computer idles at 2 degrees Celcius. thus, I do not think that is the problem.
Now, it could be a problem involving the keyboard and mouse and possibly drivers. Honestly, I am unsure what it could be, but temperature does not seem like a causal factor in this. However, I am not experiencing it first-hand as you are.
Hope maybe some of this might help.

Installed Windows 10 plus all driver updates on Dell XPS laptop. Screen flickers and dances sometimes. Anyone experienced and fixed?

Answer:Windows 10, Erratic screen behavior

when it flickers it's because it probably is installing a newer version of your video driver. that happened to my dad's laptop and the intel driver.Hide Windows Updates or driver updates - Windows Help -
hide your video adapter thing with that troubleshooter and uninstall the driver you have now, then reinstall your driver you got from Dell site.
maybe that's the reason, just like with my dad's laptop.

When it rains, it pours. I just got laid off, and right when I need my pc the most to update my resume/website, this happens...

About a week ago, my girlfriend was using my pc when a window from popped up asking her if she wanted to install antivirus 2009. She clicked 'no' vs. killing the process in the task manager. After this, she showed me an alert from McAfee that stated GetModule32.exe was trying to access the internet. I denied permission. Almost instantly, I got the pop-up attack through IE. I use Firefox. I ran Spybot and it found malware at C:/ProgramFiles/GetModule/GetModule32.exe. I deleted that, but the problems still persist. When the pop-ups start, I kill IEXPLORE.EXE in the task manager, and then the pop-ups start occurring in Firefox. One of the sites it tries to visit: My RAM is at 50% with no user programs running. When I try to use any program, my pc starts limping.
I did a scan with McAfee, and it hasn't noticed any malware.
As I write this, new behavior is being noticed. The system tray went away and came back. My pc shut itself down. Spybot just told me a change to my registry was requested: System Startup Global Entry. I denied change.

Had a trojan last month, it was picked up by NOD32, needed SpySweeper to remove it. I haven't had a hit on the trojan for a month. However, I have noticed some strange behavior. Periodically the red security center icon will flash across my system tray, but it would go away so fast that I never had a chance to determine why it was showing. Going to Widows security center would always show normal with all protection activated and operational. Today the icon lasted a bit longer and I was able to determine that the Windows firewall was disabled. But shortly after I got the security center open, the firewall reactivated, and everything was back to normal. Is this normal? I have never seen it before. How can I log what is disabling the Windows firewall?

Welcome to Majorgeeks!

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.
Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThisMake sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.
When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:
AVG Antispyware log - ONLY IF NEEDED you were not able to run CounterSpy
Bitdefender - from step 6

How do I fix this problem on Thinkpad T42 (23734TU)..I assume it has something to do with the pressure from hands resting on the laptop while typing.Symptom: the cursor moves to a different location on the screen while typing.  Experienced by fast typers.Problem goes away if eraser head mouse gets turned off (which isn't any fun, not having that mouse functioning).I thought there was a softare or BIOS fix. Thanks,Joanne

Answer:erratic keyboard behavior on T42 laptop

Joanne, welcome to the forum, not an uncommon problem experienced by fast typers. Usually the TouchPad is responsible and adjusting the sensitivity or turning off the "tap" function usually solves this.If you are sure that the TrackPoint, "eraser head mouse", is causing the problem you might consider swapping the TrackPoint caps. Most ThinkPads have the flat "Top-Hat" cap attached from the factory, change this to the smaller Classic "hairy" cap as it presents a smaller target as peoples fingers wizz across the keyboard. You may want to also try the latest drivers found here. Hope this helps

In a nutshell: my Windows 8 laptop seemingly does not even attempt to connect to my network, while other devices are connected. I'll include everything I can remember along with some stuff that may or may not be relevant.

Prelude (may or may not be relevant): I moved recently and had to switch to spectrum, was weary because I hear nothing but complaints about them. Most of the other devices in my house haven't had any problems, and initially my laptop had no issues, but soon started to disconnect me at semi regular intervals (every 5 minutes to as little as every 10 seconds). Reconnecting always took two tries (first always fails, second time connects immediately). Sometimes I would get long stretches without issue, even through sleeping, and the speed was good when it was working so I tolerated this for the last week until this morning...

The Issue: This morning my laptop can't connect at all. Troubleshooter gave nothing and neither did unplugging the router, disabling wifi2, or restarting my comp, so the first bit of advice I read was to reset the SSID (which on my Windows 8 laptop, is the same thing as "forgetting the network" if I'm not mistaken). That did nothing so I went ahead and checked my IP. The Networking and Sharing Center is showing:

Access type: No network access (I guess this was obvious)
Connections: Local Area Connection (That's LAN right?)

Clicking on that takes me to the LAC properties tab to view IPv4 properties (is ... Read more

Homegroup and network -- now you see 'em now you don't. We have 5 computers, 4 of which have Win7 home premium (all 64bit), 1 runs Win7Pro 64 bit. We are using the Lynksys E2000 wireless n router (WPA2 mode). The desktop is directly wired through LAN. Each machine has Norton Internet Security 2011 installed, I have set up each system to 'full trust' (Norton's network map shows all machines on the network.
All workgroup names match. Each computer shows itself as having joined the homegroup. I made sure all libraries are shared and all pcs are discoverable. None of the computers see each other in Network and sharing center network map, or in network, or in homegroup. What's weird about it is sometimes I can get them all showing up and the next day (sometimes only an hour later) - gone. Sometimes one pc goes missing, or two, or all. Individually each machine can connect to the network and has internet access without a problem.
I have tried pinging all machines from each machine and some are reachable, some time out, some unreachable, it's different for each machine each time I do it.
Sometimes resetting the router works for all pcs, sometimes it doesn't. Today it worked on 2 of the machines but less than an hour later they were gone again. I have searched the forums for months and have tried every recommended fix I could find that seemed applicable.
Please, if anyone has any ideas to help me sort this out, I would be forever grateful. Thanks in advance for your time. Oh, and I h... Read more

Answer:Home network and sharing erratic behavior

Hi Louie. I too am experiencing what I think is the same problem - alas I have no solution (yet). I have a laptop and a printer, connected using WiFi to a router. Laptop and printer can see the internet, but not each other. But, on occasions they do, but then, they no longer do, with nothing I am aware of occurring in between.
I had Kaspersky AV installed on the laptop and have removed it just in case - that wasn't it. I will let you know if I have any success. I too have wasted hours on this!

I?ve just installed windows 7 on my wife?s HP Pavillion dv6000 laptop, and she is reporting that her keyboard is behaving very erratically. She says that while she is typing the cursor will jump to another part of the page, highlighting some text, then erasing what was highlighted with her further typing. She is getting very frustrated, especially after I promised her a better user experience after upgrading to Windows 7.

I suspected at first that she may be inadvertently hitting the mousepad, but after more testing, I?ve confirmed that this is not causing the issue.

Does anyone have a clue as to what may be causing this?

Answer:erratic keyboard behavior after installing windows 7

Welcome to the forum

There can be many reasons for your problem. Here are a few as presented in the MS forum.

The cursor jumps erratically while typing regardless of program.

The reasons would be the same for Vista or Windows 7

I am running Windows Vista Premium 32 bit O/S, with 2 GB of memory, Dual LCD monitors hooked to a new XFXForce ATI Radeon 4600 series dual monitor AGP 8x video card with 1GB of memory on board, it is a powered card hooked to a molex power connector.

Here is my problem, ever since I installed this card my scrolling, typing, mouse clicks, etc. have gotten completely erratic. My typing has gone into a lag behind mode, I am a very poor typist and I am out typing what shows on the screen by 3 fold.

I have went to XFX website and downloaded and installed the most up to date driver they have, I have removed my wireless scroll mouse and replaced it with a usb scroll mouse, I have adjusted ALL of the settings available in the scroll mouse settings menu, I have went into the BIOS and used ctrl + F1 to expose the hidden BIOS settings and increased the AGP aperture to 256mb (I was VERY dissappointed to see that was the max my MO would handle after buying a 1GB card!) but, all of these were to no avail. Nothing I did corrected the issue. While changing the settings in the scroll mouse menu did make a change in the movements it did not eliminate the issue.

ANY help or suggestions would be appreciated as just writing this thread is a super pain under these conditions!

I'm using old application named Jot Notes, developed for Windows in the 90s King Stairs Software.
It has worked flawlessly on all Windows versions through Windows 7.
On my specific Windows 8 laptop (Dell 3147) there is a serious issue.
When scrolling through a text note that is long, the keyboard repeat rate gets progressively slower as I advance through the note, so at the bottom
of the note, the repeat rate is very slow, for example when I hold down an arrow key to advance the note line by line the repeat rate is over 1-second.
A few key points. This issue doesn't happen in notepad, wordpad or MSword. Also, I tried an external USB keyboard and the problem still occurs. Interestingly, I tried a friend's Windows 8 laptop and this issue was absent (Jot Notes worked completely fine on my friend's Windows 8 lapop). I wonder if there is some Windows 8 setting that could be causing my issue. This is extremely annoying and I want to see if there is a way to troubleshoot and fix this issue. I would appreciate some guidance.

My Dell Inspiron Keyboard has been acting up for a month now. I ordered a new keyboard, received it today from FEDEX: Installed the new Keyboard; but the situation has not improved. I'll be typing an email...and the cursor jumps elsewhere on the screen...most times 2 or 3 lines about the current line.

Could this be a SOFTWARE Problem with VISTA ?

Installed keyboard sometimes only types 5 or 6 letters then behaves as if the control key was held.  Any new key selected would jump to the shortcut if applicable.  If I then select the print shortcut and close the print window, I can type five more letters/numbers.  Sometimes I can type a whole sentence before it does this. I have replaced the HDD, reset the bios to default.  All drivers are up to date, and there are no viruses.  However I could not load the 2010 Bios update because of an admin lock.

Our PC has been showing erratic behavior, including problems booting up. Our most recent blue screen of death was a "SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION" error. MBAM is detecting svchost.exe attempting to regularly hit various IP addresses. Re-booting after the MBAM check does not fix the problem.

Here are the specs on the machine:

Intel Core i5-2410M

This is my fourth Acer laptop.  I purchased the Aspire V5 572P because my 2-year-old Windows 7 Aspire was stolen during a house break-in.  It's bad enough putting up with Windows 8.1, but this new touchpad is absolutely infuriating.  I've loved my previous three Acers, but I can't tell you how many times I've had to count to 10 before chucking this hateful product across the room.  I get it...  a smart phone has a small screen and has severe limitations, therefore requiring all the swiping and telescoping touch technology to get by.  Ladies and gentlemen - THIS IS A LAPTOP!  It doesn't need all those bloody stupid contortions in order to work.  The existing touchpad technology did everything quite well.  This little demon operates erratically.  Sometimes it leaps three screens at a time and sometimes the little bugger won't move at all.  I gently scroll up with my two fingers instead of using the scroll bar and end up selecting the whole web page.  At other times the page "bounces" as if the content were made of rubber and the top of the screen were made of brick.  Mind you, I'm not some poor sap who doesn't approve of change or doesn't adapt well to new technology.  I'm the IT go-to guy at work.  I always have been wherever I go.  I HATE this touchpad and I HATE this Acer.  Someone please reassure me that it will get better with time.  It's been four days now - I don't get ang... This is not a rant about the touchpad design - I'm actually not too bothered by it. I'm having major issues using the touchpad even with the latest W540 drivers on Win 8.1. I have v18.0.7.57 which is the latest available as per Lenovo's downloads site. The cursor movement locks up for several seconds, then starts highlighting text I haven't selected, scrolls when I'm not using 2 fingers etc. Overall, it's very annoying. I have disable 'tap to click' and this helps a bit, but I still have the locking issues. Also, 'Synaptics touchpad 64 bit enhancements' is one of the top CPU consumers on the system, especially during the lockups - I can't imagine why an app that handles input should be consuming so much CPU! I have uninstalled, reinstalled (rinse, repeat) several times and haven't found any improvement.

Hi W540_tp,
Welcome to Lenovo Community!
As per the query we understood that you are facing the issue with Touchpad on your ThinkPad W540.
Uninstall the current driver and check with Microsoft generic driver.
Hope this helps.

I managed to give UAC rights to a malicious program that promptly installed a bunch of malware without my knowledge or approval. I'm having some trouble removing the malware in question, as none of the free anti-viruses I've tried have been able to detect it. I believe that I have tracked down and gotten rid of a lot of it, but every once in a while audio ads will begin playing for no readily apparent reason and when I look at the audio mixer I will see a (presumably virtual) audio device called "Name Not available" responsible for playing the audio. I haven't been able to remove it on my own.
I have also noticed that my computer has been behaving erratically on occasion. It will slow down  and all of my programs and even windows explorer will experience stuttering. I suspect that this is the fault of malware because my computer is both brand new and vastly overqualified for the tasks being presented to it. Looking at my task manager, nothing is running at above 30% while this stuttering is occurring and yet it takes more than entire second to switch between browser tabs and multiple seconds to open a new explorer window. A reboot usually temporarily solves these issues.
One of the things I suspect of being a virus is a program listed in the task manager as "Media Dashboard V2". Google has given extremely contradictory results as to what this program is, but it works in the background and occasionally starts eating an enormous amount of RAM for reasons... Read more

It is unclear exactly when the problem began, but there was a windows 10 update, then a bios update shortly before I noticed the problem.   The touchpad behaves erratically, selecting/unselecting or inserting text at a rate that does not allow control of intended tapping actions.  Pointer features seem to work fine, erratic behavior involves tapping only.  I believe the bios is the most current version, and I have updated the touchpad driver.  It is not clear to me whether there is an issue with the bios or touchpad driver installation or software, or if the touchpad has failed.  Looking for help to figure out how to resolve the issue.

Our corporate PowerPoint 2003 template makes extensive use of picture placeholders. Someone came to me with the attached slides and the complaint that after placing pictures and saving the file, the next time they open it, the pictures are not visible or have changed positions seemingly at random.
The missing pictures are in fact hidden behind other pictures, in the case of the second slide all three are in that first position. First thing I tried was right click, Reset Slide. That causes the pictures to jump into the three positions, but when you save and re-open, they are stacked again. When I reset the first slide, I'm seeing the three images, but also the placeholder with "click icon to add picture" in one case on top of the picture, which I've never seen.
Is the problem the fact that the placeholders are overlapping on the slide, so PowerPoint can't keep them straight? When I recreated this same layout in a fresh presentation, it behaves fine. Is this file somehow corrupt? Or are picture placeholders just unreliable? Any suggestions for a workaround or fix?

I have a weird problem that has been plaguing my Dell Studio 1555 for the last couple months. Most of my web browsing seems to work just fine, but i have certain links or pages (or elements within a page) that don't work. I have tested these sites on IE, FF (my default) and Chrome, and the same thing happens in each browser. I also don't think this is a router issue, i have another desktop on the same network (wired, while my laptop is on wifi) and it works just fine.
Bing image or video results usually just show a gray rectangle thumbnail, or on Bing, where it shows the thumbnails for trending searches, the thumbs are just "pipes (|)".
On my facebook home feed, lots of the links to external pages don't work and give me an error screen like i'm not connected to the internet. This has led me to believe that i might have a dns issue, but i don't really understand why some stuff would work and other stuff doesn't.

Answer:Erratic browser behavior (links not working) - DNS problems?

Welcome to the Seven Forums.

Do you have another computer on your network that you can test these sites with?

Another member with a thread like this found out that the tech support at their ISP had the same issues with the same web pages. So - if you could test with another computer, or call your ISP's tech support - that would rule that out.

Another member had this same issue - but only when using a PPPoE type of connection to the NET. Do you happen to use that type of connectivity?

If it is neither of those - perhaps the default HOST file has been changed. Maybe it is blocking stuff. Here is a link to putting that file back to normal: How can I reset the Hosts file back to the default?

Getting further away from likely causes - you can try this:
How to reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

You can also scan your computer with Malwarebytes, MSE and WDO.

So the computer boots normally. Windows loads. The sign-in screen comes up fine. Once I sign in, I get a black screen and the mouse arrow. The arrow responds fine.

Eventually (several minutes) explorer sort of half-loads.The taskbar is visible, but when I hover over it the arrow turns to the blue "loading" arrow. The taskbar does not respond to clicks. Desktop icons do not come up, and the desktop background doesn't come up either.

CTRL-ALT-DEL works. When I try to open task manager, it takes a good 3-5 minutes to come up, and responds very slowly when it does (eg when changing tabs). Looks like there are no processes using CPU.

Other keyboard shortcuts do not work (eg WINDOWS+R). I tried to see if I could run a program using "run new task..." in task manager. I was able to get the command line to open (after a lengthy wait), and that pretty much it. I can't use file explorer (constantly displays "working on it..."). When I try to type in a program's path manually, the program will not run (just blue "loading" mouse cursor forever).

I have no idea what could be causing this issue. I have tried multiple things, including:

- System restore (made no difference at all)
- Reset PC keeping files (got an error message, PC could not be restored)
- Booting into the various safe modes (made no difference at all)

Hi there!
I wish I had more info to offer, but I don't have many specifics to go on myself, or else I would put more research into them before posting here. However, I'm stumped and not sure where to look for help.
My Acer Aspire laptop (5742-6798 - Intel Core i5-430M, 15.6 HD LED, 4 GB DDR3) with Windows 7 Home Premium is suffering some very erratic behavior.
First I was experiencing random shutdowns, usually when using music software like Winamp or MixMeister Fusion. I thought perhaps overheating was the problem. I've since blown out the vents and the computer doesn't seem overly dusty.
Lately VLC Player is running in a very glitchy way - 10 s-1 min of video and then freezing, then starting, stopping, etc.
Sometimes other software is quite slow when it wasn't before. I'm decent at basic computer maintenance like defragging so I don't imagine this is the problem.
I see that MsMpEng.exe is often using a lot of resources, but when I look up info about turning it off, I get a message saying I've already disabled Defender. I can't end the process through task manager.
And now sometimes during a reboot, my computer goes into a Startup Repair loop and just sits there doing nothing.
I tried running TDDSKiller and it seemed to find at least one issue, but then I ran into the reboot problem.
Anyway, here is DDS.txt below and attach.txt is attached.

Hi there,my name is Marius and I will be assisting you with your Malware related problems. Before we move on, please read the following points carefully. First, read my instructions completely. If there is anything that you do not understand kindly ask before proceeding. Perform everything in the correct order. Sometimes one step requires the previous one. If you have any problems while you are follow my instructions, Stop there and tell me the exact nature of your problem. Do not run any other scans without instruction or Add/ Remove Software unless I tell you to do so. This would change the output of our tools and could be confusing for me. Post all Logfiles as a reply rather than as an attachment unless I specifically ask you. If you can not post all logfiles in one reply, feel free to use more posts. If I don't hear from you within 3 days from this initial or any subsequent post, then this thread will be closed. Stay with me. I will give you some advice about prevention after the cleanup process. Absence of symptoms does not always mean the computer is clean. My first language is not english. So please do not use slang or idioms. It could be hard for me to read. Thanks for your understanding.   Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here or here. When I'm in the middle of anything - typing in Word or just browsing with the mouse, the Start menu pops up, IE closes, apps start opening and closing (i.e., control panel, printer, etc.). It's crazy to watch - like someone has taken control of my computer.

I was given this Dimension 4500 PC recently. The problem started occurring after I received it (even though it never occurred during the years that I used it at my sister's company). I checked for viruses but found none. I reformatted the hard drive, reinstalled Win XP Pro and straight away - it started happening again.

I have:

Verizon DSL w/ a DLink router using WEP.
Windows XP Pro w/ sp2 & Firewall enabled

I've upgraded to the latest bios version, chipset, firmware, drivers, etc. I've looked in the event log - there are no errors.

Someone on the Dell msg bd suggested that I may have speech recognition enabled. It didn't appear to be installed but I renamed "sapisvr.exe" just to be sure.

Has anyone ever heard of this before. I have a few holiday projects that I need to get done and I'm desperate. The computer is super fast but unusable with this random (annoying!) behavior.

Thank you!

Answer:Erratic Behavior In Xp Pro - Windows Apps & Start Menu Open And Close Automatically.

sounds like the symptoms of some type of virus. wiping the hard drive generally should do the trick. i suppose unless a virus has deeply affected the hard drive that a regular format wont did you format? did you run a utility that writes zeros on the drive?which deletes all existing partitions?then create a new one? or, did you simply do format c:?if you did format c: at the command prompt, the problem could be a lurking virus on that partition.delete the partition and create a new one either using a startup floppy and the fdisk command at the prompt,or a utility that writes zeros to the drive....for that i use powermax, works with maxtor, WD, and quantum drives, not sure about other brands, a full low level format and reinstallation of windows is what i the full low level format.then use the setup cd, that guides tou through creating a new partition andformattinng it for windows{xp} not sure if you can do this with other OS, you made need to create your new partition using a startup floppy and fdisk.

Question: Erratic Mouse

I'm not sure what kind of issue this may be. I have tried replacing my mouse Marble Logitech with a new wireless Logitech one but the issue is still there.
While playing games on facebook the mouse pointer has shifted(you have to move the pointer around to slightly below or slightly to the side to click what you want-Some games I cannot even open because of this -Its also hard to close game windows since the "X" doesn't work where it should you have to move the mouse around and find the area that works to close it.I am using windowx XP and google Chrome as my browser.
Yesterday I posted on Major Geeks Facebook page and they told me this "Get SlimDrivers from our driver section and update your drivers. Odds are the USB drivers are out of date compared to the mice you are using." I did download it and it said the drivers was out of date I fixed it and rebooted and the issue remains .I posted on the wall 2x's but noone seems to be answering so I came here.
Hope you can guide me in the right direction

Answer:Erratic Mouse

What Windows Service Pack is your XP at?
What is the exact model of your Logitech mouse? (generally the wireless mice form Logitech are called Wireless Mouse Mxxx where xxx is the model number)
Are you using a Desktop, Laptop, Netbook?

Have you uninstalled any software or driver that was installed for your old mouse? what I would do is uninstall all software and drivers linked to the mice and then reboot and install the latest mouse's drivers.

Reason I ask about laptop/netbook is maybe disable the touchpad.

What surface are you using the mouse on, try a different surface to what you are using now, different mouse mat, or a dull none shiny surface.

Question: Very erratic mouse

Ok well I just finished reading all of the mouse threads I could and nothing seems to help my problem. This happens when I am on the internet usually, but it will occasionally happen off of it also. The mouse will sometimes lag for a moment when I am moving it around. It just stops then goes again, kind of like its stalling. Occasionally this will happen 3 or 4 times in a row. Also from time to time it will not recover from this lag and freezes totally. When this happens I am sometimes able to use my keyboard to restart normally. Other times the keyboard dies too. I've tried settind down my graphics accelleration, cleaning and tightening the inside of my computer, reinstalling the mouse drivers, and restoring my computer. Question: Erratic mouse

I've got a mouse problem that has developed independently on two different computers, one Win98, the other Win ME.

The mouse works OK when it is moved slowly, but behaves erratically when moved quickly. For example, if the pointer is in the middle of the screen and the mouse is moved quickly to the left, then the pointer will typically move crazily about in the middle third of the screen and usually end up on the right.

Drivers and mice have both been changed to no effect. The ME computer now has an optical mouse, so it can't be a mechanical problem.

The Win98 mouse is on COM1, the ME mouse is a PS/2.

I've fiddled about endlessly with the port settings on the Win98, changed ports etc. No effect whatsoever.

Any ideas?

Answer:Erratic mouse

I am not sure this will help, but it is something to look at.

You didn't specify the mouse brand, but usually most come with software to adjust the mouse.

What you want to do is look for the mouse speed and acceleration. Be sure the speed is set to medium...and that acceleration is set to low. It sounds like the acceleration may be set too fast, causing the mouse to act erratically

Hope that is helpful

Question: Erratic Mouse!!!

For two days now, the Trust Optical Wireless Mouse that I use has been playing up (I have an Acer Aspire 5105 laptop, and generally use this mouse rather than the built-in touchpad). This 'misbehaviour' seems to be limited to those occasions when I'm using Windows components, such as regedit, msconfig etc, and have to choose options from drop-down menus; I scroll down, release the mouse and the menu returns to the beginning, as if there were a spring there. Same thing when I use the bottom scroll bar; if I drag the bar towards the right with the mouse, when I let go of the mouse, the scroll bar returns to the left. I end up having to use the keyboard arrows or the touchpad to choose menu options. The only real change to my pc, apart from the usual Microsoft updates, has been the removal of Comodo Firewall and AVG antispy ware.Florio

Answer:Erratic Mouse

When a wireless mouse starts getting erratic,it is usually a low battery problem. Best to use rechargables, if you haven't already done so.Erratic movements can also be caused by 'fluff' etc on the ball rollers. Unscrew bottom of mouse cover, remove ball and clean.

Everything was fine until this morning. When I fired up my laptop running XP, my mouse was behaving badly. It now double clicks on its own, refuses to move windows, and fails to drag anything including text and files. I am a massive halo fanatic and my itch to play will soon turn into a full blown psychotic episode if I can't fix it soon!! So for my comps sake (not to mention the unfortunate people around me) please help!

So far I have ran every antivirus and spyware check possible. I have even uninstalled the mouse driver to no avail. Im running XP Pro so it automatically reinstalled it for me on reboot. I have also tried scolding my naughty little mouse. I even raised my hand in an attempt to horrify it but it merely sat there unflinching! Well anyways I tried the mouse on my sisters comp and it works fine. The only thing that I did out of the ordinary last night was defrag my system before I went to bed! I cant think of any other solutions so anything anyone might suggest could help! Thank you!

Question: Erratic mouse

Ive just joined this forum and would welcome some help please.
My mouse jumps all over the screen, opens up programmes and drop down boxes on the desktop without me even touchin it, sometimes the pointer disappears totally. I can sometimes cure this by ctrl/alt/del and then just close the task mgr box, other times I have to reboot. I'm positive this is not a hardware problem, but a virus type thing. I've actually changed the mouse and no difference. I did have the same problem some time ago, got help from another forum, had to run various programmes, including Hijack, posted logs etc and after deleting files as advised, the problem was solved. Unfortunately the person who helped is no longer on that forum, and nobody else seems able to help. I run XP, semperon 3000, 1 gig ram.

Question: erratic mouse

Just after start up my mouse becomes erratic with a mind of its own. It clicks on things opening and highlighting everything it touches. It becomes totally unworkable and I have to close down and reboot. Often it is still the same when I start up again. I have been told by one department at microsoft that it is a microsoft problem but they want me to pay to sort it. Is there anything I can do myself. Would appreciate some help with this annoying problem. Thankyou

Answer:erratic mouse

I would only guess one of a few things could cause that. Try a restore point to a time when it worked maybe for the first try. See help and support for restore point. It should allow you to go back in time when the mouse did work. I guess you could get a new mouse too and try it.1/3 of highway deaths are caused by drunks. Intermittently, mouse pointer disappears, but drops to quick launch toolbar and opens every program that invisible pointer sits on. Invisible pointer moves left to right as mouse is moved opening all programs it passes over. Programs are opened more than once. Alt/ctrl/del to open task manager stops error most times. Rundll32.exe has been running on the times it didn't stop. Rundll32.exe checked ok for errors & viruses etc.
No viruses. Registry checked ok. Can anyone help please. This is most frustrating and can last 2 - 3 minutes.

Question: erratic mouse

actually a trackball, Microsoft Explorer 1.0 that is. Running on Win2k, SP4, Dell Precision 360 PC, usb converted to PS2 connection.

I have gone thru the Spyware Trojan Removal process at thru step 4. HAve not completed Step 5, did run Hijack This and saw nothing out of the ordinary. Ran Bitdefender, ADS Spy, adn maybe another from the list after Step 6. No issues. Windows Update has been run, but am wary of removing MS Java since a work product definitely uses JAVA and I don't want to break it.

Problem is: the mouse (trackball), at times, jerks around, even gets stuck in a spot, but then eventually recovers. Acts as if something is so taking up the CPU time that there's no extra for the mouse to use/move.

I had this problem a few months ago and was sure I had some nasty infection, so I used it as a motivator to rebuild the system from scratch (SW). Even wiped the boot sector (cause a rebuild w/out that step had the same problem show up). WOrked for a while, and now, it's baa-ack.

A regular mouse, Dell/Microsoft Intellimouse 1.3A works fine. THe previous iteration of this problem had the regular mouse also going to erratic behavior eventually.

Tried uninstalling and reinstalling the mouse driver. Same w/video (nvidia) driver (since the mouse started acting funky after an upgrade to the video driver - I think but am not 100% positive).

Question: Erratic mouse

I installed Windows 10 on day one or two of the upgrade and have been using it since on my Toshiba 64 bit laptop. It was an upgrade from 8.1. A note that this laptop is a touch screen that I cracked, disabling the touch function a year or so ago. No problems on Windows 8.

I use Chrome as my browser and initially could not open any tabs on Chrome. That quickly resolved with some uninstalls and reinstalls I think, but no longer an issue.

From the beginning however I've had problems with what I call "erratic mouse". I've been looking but have not seen others id this as a problem. It was a frequent problem in the beginning but seems to be resolving, maybe?

It is an all of a sudden problem. The mouse will not stay where it is. It jumps to the top of the screen and starts clicking on other tabs or, seems to right click on the url setting up boundaries with big tear drops then bringing up cut and paste windows. Difficult to explain what is going on. This has happened on many occasions. The mouse continues these activities (on it's own). The more I try to interfere, the worse it gets. If I walk away and leave it for a while, it might slow down enough so I can direct the PC, via the mouse to a restart. Usually I just unplug to restart. Seems to be running a day or two now before this problem starts.

I just happened again. I pressed and held the "Windows Button" on the PC and the problem resolved.

It's now 8/16. Occurrences seem to be diminishi... Read more

Answer:Erratic mouse

I'm replying to my own post to update it and to document for later reference what is going on. Since I've had no replies on my original post, I assume this is an original problem.

On 8/18, the "erratic mouse" happened again on a couple of occasions. I can confirm that the "Windows Button" does NOT resolve the problems as I originally thought, I needed to unplug the laptop to reboot it a couple of times. I also think I can cause the problem to repeat. When I shut the lid to put the laptop to sleep, the failure occurs within a couple of minutes of bringing awake. I was able to repeat it 3X already.

Trying to explain the erratic mouse a little better .... as I said earlier, the mouse starts doing it's own thing. Many time it "brackets" a section of text in the URL on a web page with what I will call "bubble sliders". They look like bubble type markers with points on the top that delineate a section of text to copy or cut. After the delineation occurs, a small rectangular box appears with grids containing copy, cut and paste sections to click. I have never seen anything like it in any application or app. Other things and clicks occur also, just cannot get control of the machine back needing to power down.

I also looked in the event log log for items around the time of failure and am seeing nothing giving me any clues.

Question: erratic mouse

erratic mouse I have an H-P desktop running W 7 (64) which is a little over a year old. As of today my Microsoft optical mouse has gone all flaky on me. It moves jerkily and if I happen to get it to a place I want it and click, nothing happens. I can't get the Start menu to open. I have
1. changed the batteries
2. changed the USB port
3. unplugged it and installed a wired mouse
4. rebooted
5. hit the reset button on the optical receiver

and nothing has changed. I have read all the previous questions and answers on this topic and I don't know where to go from here. It doesn't seem to me that a new mouse is the answer or the wired mouse should have worked. If it is a software problem, I don't know how to get to anything.
