I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My Laptop is not charging then the indicator of the laptop blinking white and orange.    See Video Below
then what the main problem the AC adaptor or the battery ?
need to identify the problem then i will find some parts for replacement

Answer:Plug in , not charging Dell inspiron 15 5558

Does the system correctly identify the AC adapter or does it show unknown?  F2 at powerup to check.
If the adapter IS recognized, replace the battery.
If the adapter IS NOT recognized, and is a non- Dell adapter, replace it with a Dell adapter.  If it's a Dell adapter and it's not recognized, replace it with a new Dell adapter first.  If that doesn't solve the problem, replace the DC jack in the system:
If that doesn't solve the issue, replace the mainboard.

Inspiron 5558, plugged in not charging with orginal dell charger that came with the laptop and 0.48 ghz instead of 2.4. I am 100% sure that the cords are 100% fine. The wierd thing is that it sometimes charges and sometimes it does not. But when is starts charging, it will not stop until I remove charger or battery. I found someone on reddit that had the exact problem with the exact things that happens to him and the exact model. I updated the bios and all other stuff on my pc up to high performance. Sometimes it will charge in 1 hour and sometimes it  automatically charges. Sometimes it take about 2 minutes to start. Once it took up to 5 hours. And Dell of course wants that easy money by not letting people buy cheap good chargers and letting them buy there <profanity> $60 chargers.

Since the past three days I am getting an error when I start my laptop that the AC power adapter wattage and type cannot be determined. I have had this laptop for more than a year now and this problem started 3 days ago.
The performance of the laptop is also affected and it cannot even play videos properly without hanging every 2 seconds. I tried resetting windows to factory settings but that didn't help at all.
Kindly advise a solution for this problem. I am an engineering student and I really cannot do anything without this laptop.
Thank you.

The charging light on the front left-hand side of my computer is blinking erratically when the battery is at 100% as well as when the battery is removed. I've had a few issues in the last couple of days where it hasn't been charging and I'm not sure if that is related.

Over the last 2 days I have been having a problem as indicated in the title of this post. The fault has rectified itself 3 times, but again today, it is back to "battery plugged in, not charging." As I am running the laptop (Windows Vista Home Premium; 32 bit) on the adapter without problems, I assume that the adapter itself may not be faulty.
I also have a Dell Inspiron 630M laptop running Windows 7.  Can I safely use that adapter with the Vista laptop, without causing damage to the Vista ?  If it is safe to do so, and the battery on the Vista starts charging, then it would indicate that the Vista adapter/charger has some kind of fault.
Hoping someone can give me some guidance. Thanks.

Answer:Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop. Battery plugged in not charging. Can I use adapter from a Dell Inspiron 630M laptop ?

If the adapter has the same plug and the same or higher power rating, you can swap them.
Check to see whether the 1545 recognizes the AC adapter or whether it shows unknown (F2 at powerup).  If it shows unknown with two different adapters, you have a bad power jack or a bad mainboard.

Make & Model : Dell Inspiron 1545

Problem : Unit does not charge reliably. Green LED on transformer unit does
not light up each time it connected to mains and laptop.

The green light flashes on and off on the charger when connected to the mains and laptop.

When the cable is plugged onto the ac adapter, the green light should always come on, regardless whether it is plugged onto the laptop or not.

The fact that the green light does not come on without it being plugged onto the laptop, tells me that the charger has gone and needs to be replaced!

I took out the battery and left the ac adapter plugged in, but it still would not power on, so I know that the problem is not with the battery because the laptop would have started to work!

I also took out the battery and left it without the ac adapter plugged in, pressed and held the power button down for 20 seconds, so the RAM gets cleared to perform a hardware reset, but that did not work either and it still did not power up, so I am also assuming that the system board or motherboard needs to be replaced!

Hi sergios,

Try to get your hands onto a spare AC adapter that's compatible with your computer and then test it on your computer. Please provide an update when you can, thank you.

Hello guys I need help... My Dell Inspiron 1420 laptop has a weird problem. the laptop does not recognize the power adaptor and hence it is not charging but when I remove the battery and keep plugged in, it shuts down. (That means battery is fine just not charging). I can not bypass the battery coz if I do, the laptop shuts down. I had to take the battery to another laptop and get it charged. When I return it back to my laptop and plug in, it displays 2500 hours remaining-not plugged in. when I remove the power adapter, it displays 2 hours remaining-not plugged in. Please help me!!!

Answer:dell inspiron Battery not charging

It might be worth it to buy another power adapter, like this

If that doesn't work, then the problem is on the soldered connection on the motherboard that the adapter plugs into.

Maybe one of the geeks here can tell you how to rest the socket before you spend money for an adapter that might not be needed.

You mentioned that you charged the battery on another laptop. If the power adapters are the same (carefully read all the specs posted on the adapter), try swapping out the adapter and see if it works on your Inspiron 1420.

When the laptop is plugged in, it does not charge the battery. The battery is new so surely the battery is not the issue. Unfortunately, the battery is at 1% now so when the adaptor is taken out, the laptop immediately shuts off. I have tried these steps to no avail:

- Shut Windows down
- remove ac adpater plug from computer
- remove battery
- Now hold down the power button on the laptop for 30 seconds
- Put the battery back in
- Plug the ac adapter back in
- Turn on computer

So I was wondering if anyone could help me eliminate some possibilities as to why it is not charging before i take it into the repair shop or purchase an external battery charger or turn it into a desktop. Thank you.

. My Dell Inspiron 5535 is charging only up to 66% and stops.
. I now have Windows 10, upgraded from Win 8.1 over a year ago.  It had been correctly recharging until about a few weeks ago, when it charged to 86%, and then to 68%, and now 66%.
. I have tried:  removing AC cord, re-booting, also removing battery and reseating.  I have uninstalled the Microsoft AC adapter file and the ACPI file, and they reinstalled when i powered on again.  My cords all appear in good condition.
.  computer starts and operates successfullly without the battery.
.  I tried to update the drivers, but the response was the drivers available are current.
I am "assuming" the battery is bad, but purchasing a new one might not fix this problem.
Any ideas or help please?  Thanks.

Hi all,
I purchased a Dell inspiron 7567 laptop in mid to late January of this year. After a couple months, I had an issue with the battery not charging. I contacted support and searched different solutions, and all of them said to remove the battery and restart the laptop, then reinstall the battery. This worked temporarily. I had the problem again not long after, but again the solution worked. Recently, however, the problem has resurfaced. I've tested every solution I can find, I've contacted support and tried their solution, and nothing has worked. When I boot up the system and look at the bios, the AC adapter is recognized and working. When I look at the battery in the Dell Power Manager, it is confirmed to be a Dell battery. The health of the battery states unknown, and I've read that this could mean that the battery itself is bad, but since this problem has occurred before saying the same thing and then later been resolved and since the system is only 6 months old, I have a difficult time believing that the battery is bad. There is a BIOS update I can download, but with the system at 0% there is no way to install it without risk to the laptop. Dell support has told me I will need to send it in for repairs and pay for any parts needed, but I require the laptop for classwork and such, and sending my laptop away for 2 weeks would only be detrimental. My question is is this a common problem with this system, and if so is there a solution I haven't found yet.... Read more

HelloI have a Dell Inspiron 3542 laptopwhen it is plugged into the charger, I have no power no LED indicator nothing ... just components that heat up in the motherboard.Maybe I have a short circuit in the motherboard.I disassembled my laptop. Answer:Dell Inspiron 15 3542 i3 no power no charging no led !!!!!

You've isolated it to a bad mainboard - which needs to be replaced.  Unless you've got several thousand dollars' worth of test/repair equipment handy,  this is a replacement - not a repair.
If you do have such equipment, and the troubleshooting skills - you can try a repair.

I have kept my laptop plugged in but recently, hovering the mouse over the battery icon at the bottom right corner of the screen gives "5% available (plugged in but not charging). Right click displays "Desktop mode battery charge". Click on this gives a form with tabs: Status, Battery Health,Desktop Mode, Longevity Mode.
The status tab shows:
Battery Capacity 4%. Battery charging disabled.
Enable Dell Intelligent Display in battery mode (unchecked)
Enable Dell Extended Battery Life (checked)
Remind me when Dell Intelligent Display or Dell extended Battery life is on (checked)
Settings - greyed out
The Battery Health tab shows a picture with a battery and a tick and "your battery is performing normally"
Option Desktop Mode is selected.
The other two tabs did not give useful info.
As an experiment I disconnected the battery supply. A warning picture of the battery showed briefly before the whole machine went dead.
Any ideas how I can resurrect the laptop?
Why was it not charging and stuck at 4-6%.

Answer:Dell Inspiron 3521 Battery not charging

Batteries not charging can be caused by a number of reasons but the three main ones will be a)Duff battery; b)Duff charger and c)Duff connector on the motherboard.
But in your comments you say that Battery Charging is Disabled. Is this a Dell Option that you can untick in Power Options?

I am having problems with the battery charging on a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop.
I bought this computer which had a charging issue. It only works on mains power the battery is not charging.
It was thought that the Charging jack board was faulty. This has now been replaced.
I am still having problems.
The mains adapter that came with the laptop was not original Dell.
I have replaced the adapter with an original Dell PA21. The end lead that plugs into the jack has a hexagonal end.
Does anyone know if this is the correct type for this model? Or should I have a round end type? Or does it make no difference?
I can only conclude that the problem lies in the adapter and/or the Dell battery that I think could be dead and may need replacing.
Thanks very much.

Answer:Dell inspiron 1545 charging adapter

Some systems were built with hexagonal connectors - if yours has one at the computer end, the adapter should fit it. If not, you need the round connector.
That said, if the AC adapter isn't recognized and you've already tried a new adapter and a new DC jack board, the problem is with the mainboard, not the battery.

I recently bought a new battery, thinking my old one which was a refurbished battery just packed up as it was on the way out. When i put new battery in the power meter reads 52%. The battery is not charging however! When the power plug is pulled out the battery light does not come on! The battery is a brand new 9cell, so im sure it is not the battery. I suspect this is why refurbished battery died, or has it? Any thoughts suggestions would be appreciated as im not so savvy at the tech stuff!

The battery charging light is flashing orange and green which according to the helpfile means that 'the battery is too hot to start charging'. The laptop is about 8 months old and battery use has been fairly light.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

I bought this laptop -new- (Inspiron 5555) from HHGregg (a mistake, because they are not in my area anymore so I cannot return it).A few weeks after buying it, with normal usage, normal charging, the battery STOPPED charging.I have read many forum posts and seen that this is a common issue with DELL. I read some forums that said buying a new charger would work, as the battery test in BIOS says that the Battery is performing as normal, as well as running my own Battery test (also normal). This worked for a few days, and then went back to normal.I read another forum post that says to go into your BIOS and change the charging setting from Adaptive to Standard. I did this, and it did not work, as well as changing it to all the other charging settings just to see it that made a difference.I cannot update the BIOS, even if there is one, which I dont think there is, because my battery wont charge to 10%. I am stuck on 0%. So even if I wanted to unplug it to move to my desk from the couch I could not.

I have screenshots of Dell Power Manager telling me that the power adapter cannot be determined, even says this with the ORIGINAL charger. - and the "Plugged in, not charging" warning down in the bottom right taskbar.Bought this not too long ago, only a few months, cannot return, and can't afford to just go out and spend another $600-$1000 on another laptop at the moment. Many people said NOT to send it in to Dell because they will replace the motherboard/battery... Answer:Dell Inspiron 5555 (Plugged in, Not charging).

Was this purchased as a new system?   It's not  a current one - you should check to verify whether it's in warranty or not (it will need to be registered with Dell to activate the warranty):
This is a 2015 model system so even if it's new to you, it may or may not have a remaining warranty.
If the system is OUT of warranty, go into Setup (F2 at powerup) and check to make sure the AC adapter is listed there -- if it shows "unknown", the battery will not charge.  In that case, the first thing to try is a new OEM Dell AC adapter.  If that doesn't solve the problem, the DC jack is next to replace:
And if that doesn't solve the problem, replace the mainboard.
If the adapter IS recognized, will the battery charge when the system is powered off?  If it will, but won't when operating, it may be a Windows driver problem or setting.
If the system WILL NOT charge when powered off and the adapter IS recognized, chances are it's a bad battery.

This laptop is less than a year old (OS: Windows 10) and is getting the "plugged in not charging error." The unknown AC watt error pops up when booting the laptop and I have to unplug the adapter just to get to the desktop. The AC adapter will sustain the battery although it obviously drains over time when being used, but slowly. The AC adapter and battery are those which came with the laptop. Also, the backlight for the screen and LED light on the laptop do work when I plug in the adapter.
I have tried the following:
- BIOS reset- BIOS update- BIOS Diagnostic Test & Dell Diagnostic Test- Blowing into DC Jack- Testing a new Dell brand/approved ac adapter- Testing a new Dell brand/approved battery- and basically anything else Dell has suggested through its troubleshoot suggestions
Any other thoughts here? Next step is to contact technical support as the laptop is under warranty.

Answer:Dell Inspiron 5559 (New) Plugged in Not Charging

Contact Dell for warranty support - one of three things is bad:  the adapter, the DC jack in the system, or the mainboard.   The warranty will cover the repair (assuming it's not due to a physically damaged adapter or DC jack).

We have a Dell Refurbished Inspiron M5010 for about a year. All of a sudden the battery is recognized but will not charge. It says it's plugged in and charging; but stays at 0%? Any suggestions?

Answer:Dell Inspiron M5010 battery in but not charging

Hi pgorney, Based on the description the issue appears to be related to hardware. Try to disconnect the battery from the computer and power on the with just the AC adapter connected. If the computer works powers up, follow the below mentioned steps to troubleshoot:

Disconnect the AC adapter and battery from the computer, then press the power button for 10-15 seconds to remove the residual power.
Power on the computer with only AC adapter connected to the computer and tap F2 key repeatedly at Dell logo to enter the BIOS.
Under Main Tab please check the AC adapter type (that is if it says 65W/90W or anything else).
Power off the computer and unplug the AC adapter from the wall, and from the computer.
Ensure that the AC adapter is unplugged long enough for the LED on the AC Adapter to go off.
Connect the adapter and the battery to the computer, and then power on the computer.
Check if the battery is getting charged.
If issue persists, power off the computer and check if the battery is getting charged.

Please post the results.

About a week ago I experienced issues with my Dell Inspiron M731R laptop.  There were several occasions where it refused to charge while powered on and would only charge when it was completely shut off.  This continued for around two days, then it gave me no trouble. Last night I had the issue again, so I shut off my laptop so it would charge. I had it plugged in for at least six hours, but when I powered it on this morning it said my laptop was at 6% and shut off quickly after everything booted up. I have tried several different chargers and the same thing keeps happening, and the chargers all work for my friends who have the same kind of laptop as me. The laptop will not even turn on now. It's completely shut off, yet the light that says that it's charging is on and flickers from time to time. I've had this laptop for about four years and I got a new battery for it around two months ago. The first two days when this began happening I checked everything on my laptop and it all said that my battery was working normally. I'm unsure of what the problem is, help?

Answer:Charging Issues With Dell Inspiron M731R

Unplug the system, remove the battery and hold the power button for 30 sec.  Verify that the LED on the AC adapter is ON before you connect the notebook to it.  If it's not, the adapter is bad.
If the adapter is OK, try powering up with no battery. If it will, but won't with the battery installed, the battery is bad.
If it still won't power up, the mainboard is bad -  given the age and low-end nature of the system, repair is likely not economically favorable.  Start shopping for a replacement system.

On this laptop, I have two old batteries that don't want to charge. The computer ran fine on the battery that still had remaining power, but even though the computer was plugged in, the battery kept discharging until there was no power left in the battery and the computer shut down. I can't run the laptop off of AC power with or without the battery inside. When there is no battery in and the AC is plugged in, the power and battery lights flicker green really quickly. When battery 1 is in and the AC is plugged in, the battery light remains steady orange than turns off. When the same battery is in but the AC is unplugged, the power and battery light, light up green for half a second, then battery light flashes orange slowly than stops. Now for battery 2, when the AC is plugged in, only the battery light flashes orange four times, then green and turns off, and when the AC unplugged, both the power and battery light up green for half a second, then the battery light flashes orange four times than green. No matter what I try, I can't get the computer to boot up.

I had the motherboard inspected and everything is fine, including the jack and there is power at the adapter jack. Is it normal for the laptop not be able to run without a battery that is capable of charging? Does the battery need to be replaced?

Answer:Solved: Dell Inspiron 5150 not charging

check out how much voltage you're getting from the power adapter. I had an old Hp Pavillion Z something that wasn't charging a newly installed battery. When tested, the voltage was normal (19.4V). When I tried another charger, the battery began to charge.

Answer:Dell Inspiron 14R SE charging only when laptop power is off

In descending order of probability:
Replace the AC adapter first.  Use a Dell OEM AC adapter ONLY - - NOT a third party adapter.
If that doesn't solve the problem, replace the DC power jack in the system:
And if that doesn't solve the problem, replace the mainboard.
If the AC adapter is unknown, the battery will not charge.

Answer:Dell Inspiron 5458 pluged-in not charging

Based on your description, I would suspect a battery failure. The battery might have reached the end of its rechargeable cycle or might have failed. Since another battery is working fine on the system, I would suspect the battery on your machine with the fault.
Restart the system and press f2 key to enter BIOS - check the adapter status in BIOS with and without the adapter plugged in. Also, wiggle the adapter cable at the end and see if the status changes in BIOS at any point. Check the battery health in BIOS (if applicable).
Restart the system and press f12 key on startup - choose diagnostics. Let it run the diags and if you encounter any errors - make a note of the complete error and report the same to us. These are onboard diagnostics and they might possible pick some error if the hardware is not functional. Also, run an extended / thorough tests on the HDD and memory to check for any possible errors.
If the system is under warranty, Please click my DELL-username and write me a private conversation with the service tag and your contact details(Name, Phone#, Address and Email). If there is no warranty, then you could contact our team to get a quote for a paid service call -

I have purchased a new power adapter and battery, my issue is that the system continues to think that there is something wrong with it. When you bring the batt meter up it states that the sys is plugged in but not charging. Not sure if it is related but the only problems in device manager is associated to BASE SYSTEM DEVICE location PCI BUS2 device 9, function 2 & 3 w/a physical device object name:\device\NTPNP_PCI10023 & 24. I've read some have gone from a 60hz adapter to a 90hz, some say update bios, but I have tried everything that I can think of but the 90hz adapter. PLEASE IF ANYONE CAN ASSIST IN THE DIAGNOSIS WEATHER WANTED OR UNWANTED KNOWLEDGE IS GLADLY APPRECIATED

Answer:dell inspiron 1525 plugged in not charging

You mean 60 watt and 90 watt?

Only thing I can suggest other than updating the bios, is to reset the cmos, but on that model requires you to totally disassemble the laptop to remove the cmos battery, thanks Dell.

Resetting the bios with the battery and AC adapter unplugged may allow it to start charging again, a slim possibility.

Sometimes it is a defect with the motherboard.

Hi JoJo827, and welcome to TSG.

It sounds like you may have the same problem as this thread dealing with a different Dell model laptop. I don't know at this point if your model has a separate power jack cable or if the jack is directly attached to the motherboard.

EDIT: If you can give us the Service Tag number of your laptop, we can determine the full and exact model number and hopefully determine if your power jack is on a cable or directly on the motherboard.

I have a Dell Inspirion 3521 which is still under warranty and the battery is not charging for it. It is barely a year old and i need this computer for my studies at school. It is giving me messages such as the battery is not being charged and could cause a slower connection which has happened. It also says to use a 65W AC adaptor which it is.

Please help!

My dell inspiron3521 is not charging when I connect my AC adopter.  The AC adopter blue light automatically turns off  after a few seconds. But when I remove the battery then AC adopter works fine and facing no problem. I have done these methods but still I am unable to solve the problem
1) In setup its showing the AC adopter 90W and AC adopter error is also enabled but I am not getting any error relating to adopter. Its also showing battery is working fine.
2) I updated the BIOS version A14
3)  I also upgraded the chip-set drivers
but none of the above mentioned procedures rectified my problem.
I can use my laptop normal without battery by just plugin its AC adopter. Please help me out regarding this problem. Thanks!

Answer:RE: Dell Inspiron 3521 Battery not charging

Are you using an original Dell OEM Adapter? When you plug in the adapter to the system, does the adapter stay firm or does it fall off easily? Is the adapter frayed? Is there any damage on the system? Could you test with another power adapter if possible?
Restart the system and press f2 key to enter BIOS - check the adapter status in BIOS with and without the adapter plugged in. Also, wiggle the adapter cable at the end and see if the status changes in BIOS at any point.
Restart the system and press f12 key on startup - choose diagnostics. Let it run the diags and if you encounter any errors - make a note of the complete error and report the same to us. These are onboard diagnostics and they might possible pick some error if the hardware is not functional.
Based on your description, I would suspect a battery fault. If the adapter and dc port are fine, then test with another battery and check. If another battery works fine, replace the battery. If the other battery and adapter also exhibits the same behavior, then I would suspect a dc port or the motherboard.
If the dc port needs replacing, you would need this part -

i have recently updated my bios from A07 to A12. everything is working fine. except one and that is battery is not charging properly.
it is showing message "plugged in not charging". i have read lot of content but can't able to find the solution. i hope here i can find some good solution. my laptop battery and charger are fine.
now i am thinking about some options which i have thought after doing some search on this isssue
1. i should install windows 8 because mainly BIOS supports that OS. currently i am running windows 8.1 pro 64 bit
2. i should move from legacy to UEFI boot because in some videos when they update their BIOS they have UEFI already enabled.
here is the image of the situation

A week away because of log in problems (Which Continue) and I really needed you guys!!!!
Acquired a replacement charger board for an Inspiron 1545 from e-bay. Fitted no problem and the laptop works although the batter icon in the system tray says "x% available plugged in not charging" where the "x" started at zero and slowly, so slowly increased ??) to over "90% Not Charging" at which point I removed the power lead to prove that it was in fact working on battery.
Tried from device manager to uninstall the battery drivers but when the lappy rebooted and reinstalled them - no difference.
Having loosely reassembled the laptop can anyone give me a clue? Is this a software, hardware driver issue or is it in fact the wrong charger board?

Answer:Dell Inspiron Charger Board - "Not Charging)?

By the way, forgot to mention, I also changed the battery because I actually have a scrap Inspiron 1525 as well.

So, just under a year ago I had bought a Dell Inspiron 15-3552 laptop and it has mostly been a reliable and durable computer. However, I've had an issue with the charger (or charger jack) twice now. The first time was pretty straightforward. It was an issue with the jack (had to plug the charger in at a certain position, computer lagged with it in, "plugged in, not charging", etc.) and I got it repaired relatively quickly. But this time around, I had an identical problem (except now the charger has stopped working entirely) but the place that I usually go to for this kinda stuff was persistent about this being a charger issue. So like anyone would, I went to best buy and bought a charger. Despite the fact that the moron said that it would work with my computer, it didn't (and the dude didn't even allow me to return it). After that whole thing, I decided that I'd just look on the dell website for a compatible charger. However, as shown by this ( ), there was no option for an Inspiron 15 3552, leaving me very confused.TLDR, I need two answers.1) Is this an issue with the charger itself, or the charger jack?2) If it's the former, is there any way I can get a list of chargers compatible with this computer?

First things first, Dell Inspiron 1501 NOT 1505. Ok? Now, this computer is pretty used, and long lived somewhat at 3 years, one battery. Last year, it completely accpeted no charge. I am on it, using AC power. I wouldn't mind AC power too much, but the power cord providing AC power, is sooooo mucked up. (will it stay in long enough to post this message???) I COULD buy a new battery (100$!!?!?), yet my dad has no job ATM. Any suggestions? PLEASE!

I had the same problem with my dell inspiron 5010. The problem is most likely with the connector on the back of the laptop. There are 3 type of connectors, +19.5v, ground and sense.
I resolved it by bending the pins towards outside leaving the center pin (sense) free.

I have one of the newer model Dell Inspirion laptops. How do I turn off the light that accompanies the power button and the charge light on the front. I'm able to turn off my backlit keyboard, but these two other lights are quite bright and annoying when I'm trying to play movies in a dark room.

Answer:Laptop lights (power/charging) - Dell Inspiron

What is the exact system model?
The power led and the leds on front are also used as diagnostic indicators. If there is any hardware issue on the machine, these leds help isolate the source of the issue. Hence, there is no way to disable the leds from turning on, as they would be connected to a cable soldered to the motherboard.

Answer:Dell INspiron 13 5000 series Battery not charging

Hi JSuboh,Thanks for posting. How new is your Dell Inspiron?  A battery that won't charge can be due to several factors.  If the battery is over a year old, if the power adapter is not charging, or if the motherboard has a bad charging circuit. If you have a "new" system, best thing would be to run system diagnostics by pressing F12 at startup, make a note of any errors, then give Tech Support a call.  You can contact them at 1-800-624-9896 or 1-800-288-4410, or you can initiate a chat session at:

The flickering only occurs when the laptop is charging. It happens when I play games, and I have noticed it happen occasionally when I open the start menu. When playing games, it looks like the flickering may be changing the screen resolution. The flickering does not occur on a second screen when using an HDMI cable. I have installed all of the updates for the device and tried adjusting the screen refresh rate.
Could this be an issue with the power cord?

Answer:Dell Inspiron 5555 Screen flickering when charging

Hi there, Since the flickering is only local to the notebook and does not follow the HDMI connection (is that even when charging it?) this most likely is an issue with the screen itself or the cable attaching it. However, have you tried updating to the latest BIOS on the system? I know you mentioned updates, but that might be something worth trying first. Best,Brad

I've recently had a few problems with my Dell Inspiron Laptop. It is plugged in to the AC adapter, but when I check the battery status I get a message saying '4% available (plugged in, not charging)'. This means that I cannot work on my laptop unless it is plugged in. The battery light on my laptop flickers a dim blue colour. I also don't want to buy a new battery for it to not work in my laptop either.

It also seems to get really hot when it is plugged in, and occasionally it will switch off unexpectedly. I'm guessing the reason the battery won't charge may be something to do with the motherboard and over-heating.

Any suggestions on what I can do to fix this problem?
Probably my own fault for buying a Dell...Haha!

I'm coming through with this issue because I saw so many people (including dell tech support) struggling with this issue before.
The issue is as follows: you connect your laptop to the charger, the charging light goes on, windows says "charging", even the BIOS says charging, and yet, the battery's voltage just keeps going down no matter what you do about it..
Dell tech support usually try to guide you to reset the BIOS battery by removing the main battery and press the power button. but it's not the case here.
The solution I found was a very strange one, changing the RAM slot seemed to solve the issue completely.
Just taking the RAM card from one slot to the other. on one slot it's stopping your laptop from charging, on the other everything is good.
I honestly don't know why that is (and I'm a PC technician myself),  considering the laptop ships with two perfectly good RAM slots, but I thought the solution needs to be out there.
I'm hoping I managed to help some of you, (Even with my less then perfect English) Sapir.

Is there any way to change the colour of the led which glows white when charging and orange when battery low?

Answer:Change color of LED charging light in Dell Inspiron 15 7548

If you solder in a new LED, possibly.  Short of that, no.  Doing so will void your warranty if that's a consideration.

Well, the charger is plugged in, but it says not charging. This has happened twice. I would have thought bad battery or bad charger, except luckily the first time it occured right after buying a new hard drive. I did a hard reset on the battery and that worked.
Now, it has happened again. I tried the regular battery reset, but that did not work. I tried uninstalling device and reinstall..did not work either.
Oddly, what did work was the following:
I had about 38% battery left. I unplugged the power cord from both laptop and wall outlet.
I removed the batter. Computer went dead.
I wiped the battery connectors with a clean cloth several times.
I put the batter back in and turned the laptop on with battery only.
I plugged power cord into side of laptop, then into wall outlet.
Immediately, the laptop began charging again!
I am not sure why this worked. Maybe some techy out there may know. When I tried the battery reset, I turned the computer off before taking out the battery. Then took it out. Plugged in laptop with power cord and powered it. Then shut down and placed battery in. I turned back on..but nothing...
It may have to do with having the laptop already on when taking out the battery, or placing back the power cord, or could just be the wiping the battery with cloth????

Answer:Battery plugged in, not charging...(found the fix that worked for my Dell Inspiron

Hi thelights007,
Please share the system model and the operating system installed. The error 'plugged in not charging' can be caused due to various reasons such as faulty adapter or faulty charging board.
You may try below mentioned steps which may help in fixing the issue. Steps to perform Flea Power are:

Power off the system.
Disconnect any external peripherals (flash drives, printers, external hard drives) from the computer.
Disconnect the AC Adapter and remove the battery from it.
Press and hold the power button for 20 to 30 seconds to release the residual charge from the laptop.
Reconnect the battery and the AC Adapter.
Once the system is powered on and booted properly, re-seat the battery. Check if you still get the error or not.
Boot the system to BIOS, tapping the F2 key on the Dell logo screen when you power on the system.
Press F9 key to load BIOS defaults. Once done, press F10 key to save and exit. System will restart. Check if the error is still there.
Try and wiggle the AC Adapter cable and check if that makes a difference.

If it still doesn't work, parts replacement may be required.
Hope this helps. Please share the findings.

I will try again with posting this. I dont see anything against terms or rules in my post. I would like some advice and opinions on this issue and if my grievance is reasonable?
I purchased this laptop in early December 2014. I would like to add that this laptop cost me close to £1000 when purchased. Purchase was direct from Dell.
2 days ago, the laptop developed a fault where it would not longer accept any charge from the charger.
No notifications or messages on the laptop informing me of any faults with battery or charger.
I use this laptop for work and i am self employed- this is a very important tool for me and my business will come to a halt without it.
I contacted customer support and through diagnosis they inform me that the motherboard needs replacing. The charger when plugged in, has the green light come on but when plugged into the laptop the green light on the charger flickers and turns off. I am told the motherboard is sending a current back and causing the fault, preventing the laptop from charging.
Dell are asking me for £600-700 which is nearly the cost of the laptop new. An engineer will come out and replace the board.
This is completely and wholly unacceptable. The laptop is just over 2 years this month- It is a £1000 machine and was a high spec, premium multimedia laptop from the 7000 series which is supposed to built and made to a high level.
This is not an entry level budget laptop. I would expect a battery or charger to fail after this p... Read more

Last week, it became apparent that the battery in my Dell Inspiron 6000 was not charging: The battery light flashes yellow intermittently while the computer is plugged in (both while it is on and while it is off), and flashes orange if I unplug the AC Adapter. Here is what I've done:

1. Checked the Dell Quickset Battery Metter -- all the fields (total battery charge, primary, and secondary) were grayed out)
2. Checked my Power Management settings. It's set to activate a low battery "text only" alarm at 10% and to go into hybernation at the critical battery charge of 3%.
3. Checked the Power Meter -- The total power remaining is "Unknown." Under the batteries available, it says "not present."
4. Pressed the status button on the battery -- all lights lit up.
5. Ran Dell Diagnostic Express Test -- got the "Error Code 0F00:136C - IDE device failed. Blank media or no media is present in optical drive."
6. Ran Dell Diagnostic Symptom Tree and chose the symptom "System will not run off battery" -- All tests passed.
7. Ran the Dell Diagnostic Custom Test for the battery and the sensors -- All tests passed.
8. Downloaded the Inspiron 6000 BIOSFlash A09 and tried to run it -- Got the message "AC Adapter and battery must be plugged in before the system BIOS can be flashed" over and over again.

I have removed the battery, replaced it, etc. I don't want to buy another battery if it's not necessary. And I do... Read more

I have had my Dell Inspiron 5520 Laptop since late 2012. It has been a great computer, and although I have recently upgraded to a new Dell laptop, I still use my 5520 for writing and entertainment purposes. The only reason I upgraded at all was because I had a hard drive go bad and didn't realize that it was only the hard drive at the time. I restored the computer with a different version of Windows 7 after I replaced the drive and everything is working great - except the battery charging. It is sporadic. What happens is I plug in the charging cord at times, the computer detects it for a second or two, and then it no longer charges. I ran a complete PC health check and it showed everything is working properly and the battery is healthy, but it did not detect it being plugged in even when it was. I also flashed the BIOS, and it had no real affect on the charging issue. WHAT DID WORK was shutting down the computer, removing the battery, and pressing the power button for 30 seconds and reinstalling the battery. After I do that, it does detect the charging cord is connected and the battery charges properly - but only for a week or two, and then I usually have to do it all over again. Any thoughts? Is my battery going? Charging cord? Any other thoughts? It's not a HUGE deal that this is happening. I love this computer. If I can correct the problem, I will. Thanks!

I tried update my bios, adjust power plan, update my nvidia, adjust screen frequency from 60 hz to 48 hz, but there is nothing happened. The problem is still there.

So I ran into the old plugged in, not charging problem with my laptop about a month back. I hoped it was the charger, but upon getting a replacement 65-watt charger, the problem persisted. I assumed the fiddly bits on the inside of the laptop had given up the ghost, as I've had that issue before, but when a friend plugged in his 90-watt dell charger it worked like a charm. I'd rather not have to go buy a new 90-watt charger, but I will if I have to.
Also, I suppose I should mention that I'm using a 5759 with no modifications. Also, I used to get an error message every time I plugged in a 65-watt charger though it doesn't show up anymore for whatever reason and I can't remember exactly what it said. Something about it not being recognized or somesuch. Same error message with 3 different 65-watt chargers.

I have had my Dell laptop for almost two years now. I replaced the battery before the warranty expired (1 year?). The battery was working fine, but I was starting to have to jerry-rig the angle of the power cord in the socket to charge the battery. I purchased a knock-off AC adapter replacement. I started getting error messages almost immediately when booting up that cord might not be compatible with the laptop. As it was working, I didn't worry about it. The power light start flashing in a particular pattern then, which it has been doing for months (three fast orange flashes and one long white flash). Historically, a white light has meant "charged" and an orange light has meant low power. The AC adapter became increasingly less efficient in charging the battery until it ceased to charge it at all. I purchased the Dell AC adapter recommended for the newest version of my laptop model. There was no noticeable change. (I understand from Dell that the problem may have been that I purchased a 90W adapter, compatible with newer versions of this model, but that I should have purchased a 65W adapter as my laptop is older.) I returned that adapter to Dell and then purchased a re-furbished Dell 65W AC adapter through Amazon. Again, no noticeable change. The battery is taking absolutely no charge from these cords. As I remove the power cord from the socket, the computer instantly shuts down.

When I hover over the battery icon, it says the battery is 0% charged and that ... Read more

My Dell Laptop (N5110) is charging extremely slow (about only 1% rise in 24 hours continous charging). The battery health shows that battery is performing normally.
My battery is about 4 years old
Some how i managed to charged upto 16% but when i unplug charger, the battery level goes down very fast.
Do i need to change my battery or my problem is something else?
Is the message "battery is performing normally" fake?
Thanks for help in advance.

Answer:Dell Laptop Inspiron N5110 Charging Extremely Slow

As long as the AC adapter is recognized and the battery does charge, it's a batter on its way out due to old age.  Four years is a good long run for a battery - if you must use the system on battery, it's time for a new one.

hi all, just been given a Dell Inspiron 1545, problem is, when i plug in the charger, with the battery in place, all i get is a constant flashing orange light at the charge indicator, no green / white lights?
The battery is completely flat so it won't start on battery only and i've tried removing battery, holding power switch down for 10 seconds to drain the circuit, connecting charger, without the battery, but it won't switch on, just the same flashing orange light.
I'm sure the battery is fine and the charger has the blue led illuminated on it. Can i assume the charge circuit on the motherboard is away?
Any suggestions, thanks in advance.

Answer:Dell Inspiron 1545 Not Charging [constantly flashes orange]

With the battery out and the charger connected, do you get any lights? It's not unknown for the connections in the plug to fail with all the flexing that it gets, so the led on the charger is not a sure check that all is well.

Hello, I don't know if this is the right place to post this, but if it's the wrong place, I'd really appreciate some direction in where to post it.
A little less than a week ago my house was struck by lightning. In addition to many other electronic devices dying, my Dell Inspiron 3543 laptop has been affected by this as well. It was plugged in and charging at the time of the strike. Ever since the strike, whenever I plug in my charger (or any other Dell charger that fits for that matter), I get a message saying this:
The AC power adapter type cannot be determined.
Your system will operate slower and battery will not charge. The problem might be solved by:
-Ensure the plug is inserted completely for best system operation
-Connect a Dell 65W AC adapter or higher.
The computer, when plugged in, doesn't lose power, but doesn't charge either. It just stays at the same % battery life. As the message indicated, my system is running slower. I am capable of making this post, as well as other simple tasks, but things like playing video games are out of the question (I've tried). I've also found frame skips in YouTube videos as well as buttons lagging when I click / move my cursor over them.
I'm sure this is directly related to the lightning strike, but what I want to know is whether or not it is fixable, and if so, how? Is my situation an anomaly? I appreciate any replies or suggestions, Thank you

Hello to all of the Dell Community!
In our hands we have a Dell Inspiron 7520, to which the battery does not stay in the charging port and is loose, to which it often falls out and the computer switches off.
In retaliation to this, i have ordered a new charging port, but also have noticed that, their is originally a small rubber ring which is missing, which is normally in front of the charging port, on the laptops casing and looks like it keeps the charger in the port, preventing it from sliding out so easily.
Where in gods name can i find this small little piece :D it has been the hardest thing to look for and find, an can not seem to get it anywhere! or know of the proper name for it.

Answer:Dell inspiron 7520: Loose charging port, missing rubber ring insert

Thank you for writing to us!
Can you please confirm when you say charging port you are talking about the battery not staying in its slot and keep falling off.
This small rubber ring that you are talking about if it is from the adapter end would be a part of the adapter and not a stand alone/separate part and if its on the system then it would be a part of the panel .
Kindly private message the service tag and email address.
We would also like to know the system was dropped or damaged in any way.

Just bought this model a month ago. At first, I thought there isn't any LED Indicator in this model for charging/ HDD activity modulation but later when I saw the guide, I noticed an indicator just below the touchpad. But, the catch is that it isn't glowing at all. Even while charging, I tried the hotkey combination (Fn + H) to toggle that light but to no avail. Any idea as to how to activate this light?

It was a bitter experience with Dell. I have been using my laptop with utmost care and never hit anywhere or physically damaged, as per your words.

To know more, visit this link.
Before buying laptop, Dell store person told that I will get express service and the person will visit home if there is any issue. But now there is no one to help even when I called 8 times since morning.

Dell is asking for 8k+ to repair one hinge.

Answer:Dell Inspiron 5558 3 months old and hinge is broken, poor plastics used by Dell

Hi nanaiahkp,
Please private message me the pictures showing the hinge issue, service tag, owner's name we can check what best can be done to address your concern.

Can someone help me with this problem? So I just received my brand new Dell Inspiron 15 3000 and the battery is not charging. It says it's "Plugged In, Charging" but it never goes up and stays at 0%. At first I thought I just need to plug it in for several hours but it's been 5 hours now and still the battery stays at 0%. I tried running the BIOS Diagnostics just to see if there are problems and there's none. The battery status says everything is running normally and the Battery State says it's Idle. I tried draining the flea power several times, removing and reattaching the battery, but to no avail. I'm getting really frustrated and I'm really close to throwing this laptop back to Dell.
I read somewhere that I have to update the BIOS but it won't update unless the battery is charged at least 10%. Someone also suggested that Windows 8.1 is causing the problem. I haven't even started using this laptop and it's already giving me a *** ton of problems. Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks guys! :)

Hello, I have a brand new Dell Inspiron 5558 with Windows 8.1 64b installed. I can't use touchpad gestures, no scroll, no pinch to zoom, etc. I have installed the latest drivers from here but after install (which says it is succesfull) nothing is showing up in my taskbar or control panel or program files.

Answer:Dell Touchpad gestures not working on Dell Inspiron 5558

I found the fix here. Install Synaptics 19.15.2 Windows 10 64 Bit  even tough you have Windows 8.1.
Install like this:
1) Extract the files to another folder
2) Open the folder with extracted files copy the path of the x64 drivers
3) Go to Control Panel>Device Manager>Mice and other pointing devices
4) Right click mice and other pointing devices, select Update Driver>From Hard-Disk
5) Add the x64 drivers path
6) Select Dell Touchpad
7)  Install drivers
8) Restart

i have dell inspiron n4050
3 days ago when i plugged in charger my laptop is not charging. when i put mouse on battery symbol it says "plugged in not charging"
when i shutdown my laptop sometime it getting charged(1,2 times a day).
when i start it same problems occurs.  a notification appears" The AC power adapter type cannot be determined"

Answer:Dell Inspiron N4050 "Plugged in not Charging"

Hi waqas189,
I’d suggest that you follow the steps mentioned below and check for issue resolution.

Switch off the computer.
Disconnect the AC adapter from the system.
Remove the battery from the computer.
Press and hold down the power button for 15 seconds.
Then connect back all the peripherals and check for issue resolution.

I would suggest you to update the BIOS on the computer. Please enter your service tag # on the link below, then download the BIOS required onto the system and install it.
Also, we will need to determine if the issue is with the AC adapter or Battery. We will have to check the status of the adapter in BIOS; if the adapter is not detected properly the system will continue to receive power but will not charge the battery. Please follow the steps mentioned below to check if the adapter is detected properly.

Start the computer by pressing the power button
Press the F2 key 2-3 times you will now be on the BIOS screen.
Under the Main Tab look for the option that says AC Adapter Type If the Adapter Type says Unknown or None with the adapter plugged in.
Reconnect the adapter to the machine and if the status now shows as Unknown then the AC Adapter needs to be replaced.
Also, I would suggest you to run a thorough test on the battery. You can download Support assist from the link below and run the PC CHECKUP on Battery to check for issues

Please let me know the findings.

This new Dell Inspiron 11 3147 just arrived today.
The AC Adapter is "plugged in" but the battery is "not charging."
I've looked all over for help for this, Dell Diagnostic has found no problem, and I've had trouble getting a hold of customer service. The most commonly suggested idea has been to uninstall and reinstall the Microsoft ACPI Complian Control Method Battery driver, which I have done.
The only thing I haven't messed with is the battery itself, which doesn't seem to be accessible without damaging the back, which is screwed on and secured well.
Any idea what's wrong?

Answer:Dell Inspiron 11 3147 Battery "Not Charging"

Update to my below post:
One day later, after the battery fully charged and all was well, I come back and it is back to the message "plugged in, not charging". I might see if reflashing the bios and rebooting will work again.
My original post on Dec 8, 2014:
I had this problem until this morning. In short, I updated the bios to Version A03,A03 (released Dec 2, 2014). Before that I did all the googling and messing about without success. Here's what to do:
1. Run "My Dell". You can access this by type Ctrl-Esc and then type in "My Dell" and clicking on the "My Dell" icon that comes up.
2. Click on the green "Drivers and Updates" panel. This should open a product support browser window.
3. Scroll down to the bottom beneath the section that says "These drivers match your selections" and click on the arrow next to "Bios"
4. Click on "Download file". Close all your other applications and run the file and follow the prompts. It will reboot for you at the end and the problem should be solved.
Good luck!
Version A03,A03

Good evening all!
I just got my dell inspiron 5558 in the mail today. Loving it so far, but have a question about the touch pad. On my old laptop I was able to "scroll" through pages using the touch pad. I haven't been able to figure out how to do that with this new laptop. I'm stuck using the actual webpage's scroll bar. I will eventually be getting a wireless mouse, but want to learn how to scroll for the times I won't have mouse with me.
Thanks in advance!Marly

Hi, I have a Dell Inspiron 15 5558 Signature edition laptop which runs windows 10. I've only had this laptop for 4 months. I've noticed that the laptop will go off for no apparent reason. I've checked the sleep settings and changed them to no avail. It goes off while I'm reading or watching a movie...just randomly. The only good thing is that when I turn it back on, it returns to whatever I was doing. If I was watching a movie when it went off, if I press the power button I will hear the audio continue while I'm unlocking the lock screen. It's a random thing that happens and it's very frustrating especially as this is a new laptop. Please help

I'll start off by saying I bought my laptop back in Oct of 2015 and I've been using my Inspiron 15 daily, and most part it gets the job done. I'm able to use my Wacom Bamboo easily and Adobe Flash works well enough but takes a minute to open. I've noticed the HDD is starting to show its age already. Bootup takes minutes now, and the Disk is constantly running at 100% when only Chrome is open. I'm no tech expert but seems to be early signs of hard drive failure even though it barely leaves my desk and has about 870GB/1TB free.
So I hopped on Amazon to get a replacement SSD, a SATA 3.0 USB connector, and a 16GB thumbdrive for backup & recovery.

This is my first upgrade, I've been looking up videos but just don't wanna mess anything up when I take the 1TB HDD out and put the SSD in there. Will I be safe making a backup of Windows 10 to the 16GB thumbdrive, then proceeding to replace the HDD for a clean install of Windows?

Does anyone have any idea what will be the cost of Dell inspiron 5558 lcd screen? My screen got damaged and need to be replaced. So please guys help me find out the price of it.

Answer:Dell Inspiron 5558 LCD Screen Price

The part should run somewhere between $100-200 depending on resolution and whether or not it's a touchscreen (the higher the resolution, the higher the price;  $200 would be ballpark for a touch panel).
Add an hour's labor cost to replace it with a local shop - whatever that is in your area.

I've already updated the bios, yet the processor fan is still not working. I've run a diagnostic previously and the processor fan speed is 0 rpm. Also the processor thermistor says its 106 degrees. What should I do?

Answer:Dell Inspiron 5558 processor fan not working

First thing to try would be replacing the fan.  If you need help choosing the correct part we'll need to know whether the system as integrated or hybrid video.

Just received my Dell Inspiron 15 5000 (5558) yesterday and I'm thinking of upgrading the Hard Drive to an SSD and wonder what problems if any I would encounter?
Any Bios Settings to change? The SSD will have a smaller capacity than the 1gb HDD it came with.
I would prefer to use the current Licenced version of Windows 8.1 that’s already installed on the Hard Drive that came with the laptop, I know there's cloning software out there but would prefer a clean install. I've made the Dell recovery media using a USB stick would this be all I need to reinstall Windows 8.1 on the SSD?

Answer:Dell Inspiron 15 5000 (5558) SSD upgrade

If you have already created a recovery media onto a USB key, That should take care of the licensing issue with 8.1 as the product key is injected into the motherboard, not the hard drive.
Please disable "Secure boot" and ensure the USB boot is enabled in BIOS before booting from the USB key to reinstall Windows.
Thank you

Upon resuming from hibernation the laptop started disk check and repair. Then desktop loaded but it became sluggish and eventually unresponsive. After a Hard boot (long press power key) it takes 20 mins or so to boot and eventually doesn't reach login screen or when it does it seems to hang at random stages. Sometimes I'm able to do a login after being patient but the desktop screen  is highly unresponsive invariably requires hard boot.  Please suggest things i can try. Thanks
