I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

X1 Carbon Gen4- Keep running into errors trying to dual boot on this computer. After trying for a few days, I found some guides and while not much I didn't know already came out of them, I was able to find a few useful suggestions. Still running into some issues, mainly GRUB related. Hard drive failed to recognize the new partition a few times, but mainly GRUB related. Anyone able to give their step-by-step guide, including BIOS changes to help me get this machine to dual-boot Win 10 Pro and Linux? Tired of having to run it from a flash drive and would rather not run it in a VM. I might be getting rid of the computer anyway and going back to a MacBook Pro. Used this computer 10 hours or less and had to send it in for repair. Got it back (new system board and CPU), same problems... sent out again and they replaced the fan. Still getting random 100% disk/CPU usage at times and the idle temps just aren't stable. Very disappointed that this was suppose to be one of the best business-class laptops around and I had to have it repaired twice in less than 2 weeks. I don't trust the Lenovo techs after this. I honestly just want my money back but I doubt that will happen.

Hi,
I loaded kali linux into my dell E5400 laptop. I did not know that windows 7 would be wiped away. I want to go back to windows 7 but dont have original window7 64 disk. I do however have another set of dell windows 7 disk that went to another computer of mine. The set of 3 disks are.... Dell drivers and utilities, (says on disk, "already installed on comp). Dell disk 2 says.. APPLICATION (already installed.....) cyberlink, power DVD and 3 windows 7. '
can I use these disks? will they work. (I cant afford new software right now). and also could I use a HD out of other computer that had the exact same windows 7 disks installed on?
Thank you in advance;
FRANK

Answer:loaded kali linux want to go back to windows 7

Usually Dell discs are customized version of Windows. Don't know if it would work on a regular PC. But if you have the Certificate of Authenticity with the Activation Key ( usually a sticker on the machine) , you can try that disc.

If it doesn't work, you can legally download the Windows ISO DVD image file for Windows 7 from here:

http://www.howtogeek.com/186775/how-to-download-windows-7-8-and-8.1-installation-media-legally/

Then you can burn the ISO image to a DVD using a program like Imgburn, a free utility, from here: http://www.imgburn.com/

A hard drive with Win 7 already installed will not work in another computer, that is because Windows is installed / customized to the CPU and motherboard chip set of that PC.

Hi all, I have a HP Zbook 15 G3:8Gb of RAM500 Gb HDD (Windows 10 Pro Os installed)500 Gb M.2 SSDIntel I7-6820HQ 64-bit OS I have been having so many problems with this process. I have read countless tutorials on installation, Bios setup, and Dual-booting. I just can't find out why this isn't working.  My preparations:Windows installed origanally Installed the 64-bit version of Kali linuxcreated a bootable usb with Rufus (even tried other programs)Actually booted from the USB and it would load the Kali linux installtion screenWent through the installation proccess (up to the last screen where it says to take out your installation disk) This is what I want, I want Kali linux to be on the M.2 SSD and Windows to stay on the HDD. I really don't care about the GRUB bootloader (if i can use it great please say how) as long as I can boot to both OS's in the boot options. Once the installation is installed on the M.2 SSD I can't boot to it, it comes up with a screen that says there isn't an OS on this drive. This is all done in Legacy mode, my USB won't boot from UEFI mode. I have read articles that have said I need to install Kali on UEFI (or Legacy) mode depending on the other OS, but they have to be on the same boot setting.  Can anyone help with this. Where did I mess up. Is this just an HP Zbook problem?  Thanks in advance for everyone's input!

Fellow ubergeeks, I have a t61p (6459 CTO, Penryn dual core 2.5GHz, NVIDIA Quadro FX570M 512MB, 1680x1050 monitor, 82801H (ICH8 family) audio controller, Intel 82566MM Gigabit & 4965AGN network adaptors, 3GB ram with Intel GM965 chipset). I am a physicist and do most of my computational/modeling work on GNU/Linux and would like to make the system dualboot with XP and any one of the standard GNU/Linux distros out there (I prefer a minimalistic system, preferably running Debian or its variants like Ubuntu). I am posting this to know the experiences of people who have walked this way before. I am a long time DELL (inspiron/other models) user and this is the first time I am using a thinkpad. So pardon my ignorance. Here goes: 1. What are the things I should know before proceeding? I would like to keep the XP (I think "thinkvantage" is really nice). I have read about the 'hidden' partition, would this be deleted if I use GRUB as the bootloader? 2. From your experience, which distro would best support the hardware? Do most of the things (e.g., s2ram, s2hdd, FN keys etc.) work out of the box?  I am aware of 'thinkwiki' and will read more in detail. Any nagging problems? Please advice. Thanks for your time and help.~rk

Answer:dualbooting t61p (xp sp3 & GNU/Linux)

1. Make the recovery discs for XP before you do anything else. Make the first disc a cd and the rest can be either 2 dvd's or 7 cd's. Grub will allow you to get to the restore partition but you never know when something will go wrong and you will need the discs. 2. A lot of people here are having good results with Linux Mint which is a Ubuntu derivative. There are no Thinkvantage tools for Linux. Most other things can be made to work. Some are easy and some are not so easy. It depends on how much work you want to put into it to get a certain functionality. I have never had a lot of luck with hibernate in Windows or Linux . Suspend is OK in Windows and sometimes it is OK in Linux. I never bother with either one. The function keys work for the most part.

Hello everyone,

I have a rather unique Linux/XP situation going on, and I'm hoping someone can help me out. What I've got is a single 40GB IDE drive with XP installed on it. Then I have a 320GB SATA drive with Ubuntu installed, but this drive is connected to the motherboard through a PCI RAID card because the motherboard did not have any SATA ports. If I remember correctly, the card is a Rosewill card, but if it's all that important I can check the documentation later.

Anyway, my question is this: What do I need to do (basically, how do I need to edit my grub.conf) to make it so I can dualboot these drives (the Linux drive is currently disconnected) without destroying my MBR? I'm plenty comfortable in a terminal and with hand editing config files, so that's not a problem, I'm just looking for a push in the right direction.

Answer:Rather unique Linux/XP dualbooting situation

First of all, you need to boot to the Ubuntu install with the XP drive attached. You should be able to choose the boot order in the motherboard's BIOS options.

Then, you need to figure out the location of your XP install as Linux sees it (HDx,x), and follow relevant walkthroughs.

Feel free to hit us up if there's something not explained well enough in there.

Question: Kali linux on ARM

Anyone had success with Kali Linux on a Nexus device? I've tried a number of different ways to attempt install; automatic (installer), manual, manual with lower versions, sideload, etc...

Just want a great netpen device that I can tote around to various jobs.... grrr!
always end up with bootloops (typically at app optimizing) or straight hangs (at "google"). I go through the whole process to get stock roms loaded, rooted, unlocked bootloader, twrp/supersu/busybox, fresh fastboot image of kali, etc.

I have looked on Virtual box forums for the answer. I have a new Dell laptop with W10 64 bit. I followed the instructions for making a bootable usb with Kali Linux installed. I used Windows 32 disk manager to make the usb bootable. After the operation was completed a message box popped up to say that the usb was verified. I am trying to install Kali Linux on Virtual Box. When I plug in the usb there is a message pops up stating the disk needs formatted. Did the usb not get made properly

hi guys,

for those who doesn't know , Kali Linux (ex-Backtrack) is a powerful forensic distro based on Debian, but many of us use Ubuntu (or variants) because it is easier to handle.

so in this tutorial, i will show you how to proceed to add Kali repositories to get Kali tools in Ubuntu.

i am using Kubuntu Trusty personally so this tutorial will reflect it; you have to adjust the procedure slightly if you use Ubuntu, Lubuntu, Xubuntu or/and with an older kernel

1- open your Software Center/Manager, the application that allows you to pick various softwares (Muon Discover, etc..)

2- go to each link below, click on technical details , select your ubuntu version; important , Trusty is not available yet so you have to choose Raring instead.

Code:
https://launchpad.net/~wagungs/+archive/ubuntu/kali-linux

https://launchpad.net/~wagungs/+archive/ubuntu/kali-linux1

https://launchpad.net/~wagungs/+archive/ubuntu/kali-linux2
3- click on Source tab , then "add source"

Spoiler

4- copy the links below then add them one by one in order to the source (step 3).
For example for my Kubuntu Trusty 14.04 i have to use Raring

Code:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/wagungs/kali-linux/ubuntu raring main

Code:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/wagungs/kali-linux1/ubuntu raring main

Code:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/wagungs/kali-linux2/ubuntu raring main
5- close and relaunch your software center to see if the lines above are added.

6- now ... Read more

Answer:[How To] add Kali Linux repositories in Ubuntu

I saw that a while ago on HF. I thought it was interesting, then one of my friend told me to not do that as I could "break my system". Apparently, doing that would basically apply Kernel patches for one Kernel to another and it could lead to system instability.

What would you recommend ?

Answer:I cant dual boot kali linux in my pc

Sure you can. The following tutorial explains how it can be done. Your notebook is a UEFI version with a GPT format hard disk volume. http://linuxbsdos.com/2015/01/14/how-to-dual-boot-kali-linux-1-0-9-and-windows-78-on-a-pc-with-uefi-... Just make sure that you have created a USB recovery media flash drive before you get started.  Use the HP Recovery Media creator to do that. It will tell you how much capacity the USB flash drive will need to be.

Hi There
Im a bit of a newbie so I made some silly big mistakes. I wanted to instal Kali Linux in my hard drive to work in my laptop thinking that I could choose which system (windows or linux) to go for at the beginning of each session. Instead of booting from a CD or installing a Virtual Machine I thought it would be smarter to avoid all the USD - Virtual Box hassle....Big Mistake!.
While installing Kali I "accepted"+"accepted" without reading through and now its all doomed. I checked around and I downloaded the Windows tool Creator but it doesnt work. I have a bootable USB that gives me access to Trouble shoot but nothing has worked so far - Diskpart-cleandisk-part1-etc.
Please Help
Chronological order of what is happening.

Drive 0 Partition 2 6.8 GB Free Space 6.8 GB

Answer:Kaos after installing Kali Linux

Are you wanting to wipe everything and start with a fresh Windows 10? If so, when you boot from the Windows 10 USB flash drive, at the first screen where it asks for languages, press shift + F10. Then run:

diskpart
select disk 0
clean <-This will ERASE the ENTIRE hard drive/ssd!
exit
exit

Then after you select the custom install option just highlight the unallocated space and click next to let Windows set everything up.

Answer:wifi not showing kali linux

Hello, Thank you for posting in the HP Support forum. Welcome! HP computers (most of them) are designed with Microsoft and Windows in mind. They do not officially support Linux due to lack of tests, HP propretiery and tested drivers, etc... As you probably know, Linux is different from Windows and FOSS drivers here come from the kernel itself. If wi-fi or sound adapter is not recognized OR if it does not function well, it may be due to lack of proper and tested drivers in the kernel. I can advice you try with different still supported Kernel versionsor post in the Linux community >> https://www.kali.org/community/ Kali is special Linux-based operating system not typically used by novice Linux users and not typically run on daily bases. You may also try the most common Linux-based OS Ubuntu or Linux Mint.

So, I was trying to dual boot my laptop Asus K42f with opertating system windows 7 and klai Linux. Unfortunately I formatted my Hard drive while installing Linux. And now I can not find my OS windows 7 and the datas on my hard drive. Does anyone have any idea, how to recover my hards drive and OS windows 7?

Answer:Recovering Hard Drive on Kali Linux

As for the data, you might recover it using recovery software. There are numerous free recovery programs. Recuva is one that is pretty popular. As for the operating system, you are going to have to clean install.

First rule. Data you do not backup is data you do not care about AND you should expect to lose said data. If you care about this data, you make multiple backups.

Second rule. Always make a backup image of the hard disk prior to doing any partitioning, dual booting, etc. If something goes wrong, it takes all of 5~10min to restore the image and you are right back where you started.

I decided to dual boot kali with my Win10 wich is my primary OS, I followed the neccesary procedure like creating a bootable kali pendrive, disabling secure boot, enabling Legacy mode, disabling the fast boot, creating a free partition and so on.....The installation went smooth and perfect but I was unable to boot into kali's GRUB after the restart, instead, my machine boot into win10 and not even the so called black screen appeared, I wiped the partitioned space i used for the installation and started the installation all over with different pendrives, sd cards and DVDs and even downloading another ISO image with the intention that either the pendrive or the image had been corrupted but the sha1 sum is still the same with the one on the official website. It is right there below setup.exe file
please help me

Answer:problem in installing kali linux ( win32 loader.ini)

If you were attempting to install Linux in a dual boot environment, it would appear that your Linux installation has corrupted the Windows boot loader. You may be able to resurrect your Windows environment
if this is the case using BootRec /RebuildBCD.
See the instructions here.

Hi,
Does anyone succeed in installing Kali Linux Network connection on Hyper-V VM using external switches? I tried so but the connection icon keeps rolling endlessly until it fails.

I have installed before Windows XP and it was quite easy. The problem may be that I'm not experienced with Linux platform, so your help is much appreciated.

As the Title suggests, I have an Acer ASPIRE ONE AO521-3530 Netbook that I purchased way back in August of 2010. This little Netbook is quite impressive, to me anyway, to this day. It still works good as new, with Windows 7 installed anyway...Here is a little more info on my Netbook before I begin... CPU: AMD Athlon II Neo K125 1.7GHzCHIPSET: AMD M880GBIOS VERSION: 1.03 (Currently Installed)SCREEN SIZE: 10.1 Inches, Widescreen, 1024 x 600 Resolution, LED BacklightGRAPHICS: ATi Radeon HD 4225, 384MB Dedicated MemoryMEMORY: 1x204 Pin DDR3 10600 SO-DIMM SLOT w/ a 4GB DDR3 Memory Stick Installed--(Mem Stick is actually a DDR3 PC12600 I had laying around, seems to work just fine on Windows 7)-- Alright. I have a laptop that dual boots Windows 7 and Kali 2016. This laptop has a 1.3GHz Dual Core w/ 2 GB of RAM. Besides being a little sluggish, it works great. So recently I decided I wanted to do the same thing with my Acer ASPIRE ONE Netbook. I currently have Windows 7 installed as well as Kali 2016 installed on my Netbook. Windows works flawlessly as it always did, Linux not so much. The keyboard as well as the touchpad does not work in Linux. I have to use a USB Keyboard and Mouse. I thought maybe it was just a driver error and a upgrade/update might fix the issue. I just spent a little more than 2 hours researching my problem without much help. I did however find out a few useful tidbits of information regarding Linux install and my AO521-3530. I also work in the f... Read more

I have a laptop with win 7 professional. I have a 500 gb hdd with four partitions, c,d,e,f. Windows was installed in c.
As i wanted to install linux kali i needed a partition. I used gparted tool in live linux to create a partition 'h' drive of e drive, as mentioned in tutorial for linux dual boot. Then i proceded for hdd installation of it. But when it came to partition whr to install there was no h drive over there. So i quit the installation an booted in windows. Even in windows h drive dint showed up. So i opend partition manager and it showed there as unallocated. So i formated it. And then it showed as a drive in my computer. So i restarted again and proceded with linux installation. And again this time when reached to install on a partition, h drive was missing. This time my f and c drive was also missing. It showed only two drives d and e. And some how e drive had the capaciy of both e and f drive. I closed the installation again and restarted .. and now i am stuck at the boot . Bothing happens. Only a black screen comes with a cursor blincking. Nothing happens after it.
Tried repairing win 7 with dvd, but nothing happened. In windows recovery option there is no os to select.

Kindly help.

Answer:Help need... Lost boot sector while partitioning for linux kali

Drive letters can change in boot mode, this is normal. Judge the partition by its size and any label you gave.

In this case however if you saw differently sized partitions during the install, something must have gone wrong with your partitioning using the Linux (not Windows) tool.

Now you need help recovering Windows, so let's use Windows tools.

Using Diskpart or Partition Wizard CD as shown in this tutorial confirm that the 100mb System Reserved (if you have it) or Windows 7 (if you don't) is Partition Marked Active.

Then run Startup Repair - Run 3 Separate Times until Win7 starts.

Next post back a screenshot of Disk Management - Post a Screen Capture Image telling us what you'd like to do, and so we can confirm the configuration.

If this fails post back a camera snap of Partition Wizard drive map showing all listings and what you think is installed on each partition.

Bought this on a whim after spending the better part of a night a few days back learning about wifi penetration testing / WPA2 / WPS attacks and having all kinds of trouble with my current adapters. Sadly, since getting it earlier today it's just more of the same.

I know the basics of how to use aircrack / etc to record a WPA2 handshake, but for the moment I'm using wifite to save on typing. In so far as I know it calls all the same tools anyway, just less typing for me.

The router I'm attacking is owned by me, so nothing illegal here. I'm just playing around out of curiosity. It's actually an old Linksys WRT54G I set up just for this purpose, and it's ~5 feet from the PC I'm using, so signal strength is very good -- reported around 86 dB. The client I'm using to connect to it and deauth is my phone, so it's similarly close.

The script runs without error, but when it gets to the point where it's deauthing and listening for the handshake it just loops indefinitely. The phone is kicked from the network and reconnects, so there is a handshake to listen for... it just never actually gets it. The WRT54G has WPS disabled so Pixie Dust and bruteforce WPS attacks aren't valid and I skip them when attacking it.

The adapter works otherwise -- it'll connect to my "real" router and to my phone if I set up tethering on it -- but it's almost like it's not actually switching modes or something? My understand... Read more

Answer:HP compaq Elite 8300 SFF to all

Hi: Your PC has a problem with the memory. To troubleshoot... 1.  Remove and firmly re-seat all of the memory modules. If that doesn't fix the problem... 2.  Test each memory module one at a time in the primary (black) memory slot. Keep testing until you find the one causing the PC to beep 5 times. Replace that memory module with a good one. If you have recently installed new memory modules, they may not be compatible if the PC beeps no matter what you do.

Hi, I have HP Compaq Elite 8300 SSF with Processor i5-3470 and 8GB RAM. The machine has 240 W power supplier and I just wonder if anybody actually upgraded this model with GPU above.I read many posts about this and I know 240W in theory is not enough for those cards, however somebody mentioned he successfully put GTC 750 Ti (of course low profile) and the PC was working without any problems. Could somebody share its experience with this configuration?

Answer:Hp Compaq Elite 8300 SSF + Nvidia GTX 750 Ti or AMD RX460

That is very unlikely. I get that you are trying to get a lot of bang for the buck, but using an entry-level small form factor PC is a poor choice to upgrade. You are not the first to consider trying it and I suspect, from experience that you won't be the last. Do a search in the forum with the words upgrade , SFF, PSU, and video card in it. You will be surprised at how many people were disappointed at perhaps their first try at upgrading with a SFF (small form factor) entry level productivity PC. The PC's case and proprietary PSU makes this a non-viable upgrade project. You should look at finding an entry-level PC that with a duo or quad core PC and a standard ATX case.

In my work I have been asked to provide five computers capable of editing video on Adobe Premiere PRO 5.x. What I have available are 8300's, with an i5 650 and 4 gb ram.  I'm looking into upgrading these to handle the task a bit better, however as an NGO we work with a very small budget, hence the recycled office computers.  What I was looking at was putting in a new graphics card and some more ram, it seems however that the supplied 240W PSU won't handle that. So my options are:Run a very low power, low profile GPU on the original PSU, such as http://www.palit.com/palit/vgapro.php?id=2392&lang=en&pn=NEAT7200HD46-2080H&tab=sporhttps://www.msi.com/Graphics-card/N730K-2GD5LPOCV1.html#hero-specification It might also be possible to run an energy-efficient full-size card and simply cut a hole in the lid of the computer, altough I have not yet found a good alternative. Another option I'm hoping for opinions on is upgrading the PSU itself. In the partsurfer I find that the 8200 SFF has a 320W PSU, PARTNO 613765-001Altough I don't care about it fitting IN the case, I need to verify that it works with the MB. Perhaps it's possible to run this (or another more powerful psu) along with a better graphics card.  Thanks for your thoughts and ideas! F

Recently I got one of these HP Compaq 8300 USDT from my company, and it is a great HTPC as it is, but when trying to play some 3D games, the integrated intel HD graphics struggles to get high fps. I checked the manuals and the recommended mxm VGA upgrade is the AMD Radeon HD 7650A with HP part number 687445-001. Anyway, I can not find this VGA at a reasonable price, but some retailers list the same card, with the same GPU  and memory (215-0803043)but a different HP part number  671864-002 as if it was the same (take this ebay seller as an example: http://www.ebay.com/itm/HP-671864-002-AMD-Radeon-HD-2GB-MXM-3-0-Video-687445-001-/391508255456?hash=... ). I imagine that they are different revisions of the same card. So my question is, if I purchase the HP part number 671864-002 will my motherboard recognize it and will I be able to use it in my HP Compaq 8300 USDT? Is the AMD Radeon HD 7650A the only VGA that I can install in this PC? Or will it be possible to install another MXM 3.0 type a VGA that cosnumes less than 33watt? As additional note, power requirements for the 671864-002 should not be a problem as I got the 180W PSU instead of the standard 135W one. Thank you in advance.

Hi, My old nc6400 running Windows 10 is displaying a red screen while booting, but starts normally (maintaing the red color). Blue and light colors seem to be fine, but the rest of the colors are a mess. The quality of the display is also very poor. I did several things to see if I could solve the problem. I did a Windows 10 repair, which uninstalled all my applications and there was no change. I uninstall the video driver (Intel 945gm) and reinstall it and no change. After that I used a knoppix boot cd and the problem is there also... not in red, but the display quality is very poor. One of the things that is also happening is the fan speeding continuosly. Can I assume that if the problem exists with W10 and Linux that the video card is mal-functioning (hw problem)? Please, if you have any sugestion it would be helpful. I would like to keep this  notebook. Thanks. Rui

Answer:Red Display - HP Compaq nc6400 - Windows 10 and Linux

271058 Your assumption is most likely correct -- as Linux and Windows use totally different video drivers.  So, any video problem that is the same in both is either the video chipset, or the monitor, or both -- but in either case, it's most likely hardware, not software.

So, as the title suggests, I want to dual boot Ubuntu and Windows 8, but not sure how to do it if Ubuntu is installed first. I'm new to Ubuntu, but correct me if I'm wrong: I find a partitioning program, partition my drive, and "burn" the leaked RTM ISO to my USB drive and install. Yes? No?
Also, will Windows be able to detect a partion that was created by Ubuntu? Again, I'm very new to Linux, and don't know much other than basic OS X and Windows, and a tiny bit from my days when I used Jolly Cloud OS on my old netbook.

Any help would be awesome. I'm kind of excited to try out final Windows 8 since my installation of RP crapped out on me (thus, installed Ubuntu)

Thanks

I installed windows 7 yesterday and now cant boot into xp, first of all it said ntldr was missing so i copied that across from the xp cd onto the xp root drive (wouldnt let me do it in the recovery console for some reason so booted into 7 and copied it across like that) but now when i try to boot into xp it just restarts the computer again????

Any help would be great, neeeeed my computer for my uni course and dont want to put all my trust in 7 with a deadline coming up and with it being unstable.

So far though i love 7

Answer:Problems dualbooting into xp - windows 7

Make sure that ntldr, ntdetect.com, and boot.ini are in the root of both drives.

Then use VistabootPro or EasyBCD to add XP to 7's boot menu. If already there, remove it and make a new, correct entry.

Hey guys,

I recently built a new HTPC and am running Windows 7 64-bit on there. But I also have a Windows XP native installation, as I am also using it to record audio from S/PDIF (and Windows Vista and newer do not lock down the digital inputs like XP and previous)

I installed Windows 7 second, so that I could use the boot manager to select an OS. Using EasyBCD, I changed the options so they show "Windows XP" and "Windows 7" respectively. Windows 7 is the default that boots after 10 seconds of not selecting an OS.

Here is my question - is it possible to make an intelligent reboot script, so that if I'm running XP and select Restart, it will restart into XP and vice versa for 7? It would be really useful - especially if I could make it remember that preference after shutdown so it will just start what was previously running. In other words, the only way to change the OS is when it boots, to just select which one I want.

Answer:Windows 7/XP Dualbooting Question

I don't think this is possible, at least not without serious programming. Not a simple script. The problem is that the OS selection takes place very early in the boot process, long before any script can run. That means modifying the boot parameters before the reboot. That is not simple and open to a variety of issues which I wouldn't care to speculate on.

So, online, I bought a 320GB Sata HDD.The 80gb one had two partitions, a system recovery and the actual OS and files itself. Using DriveXML i took an image of the OS and files, putting it on my external, then put the new HDD in.I then installed Windows 7 RC.This is where I went wrongAccording to pretty much every resource I found online afterwards, I should have put the cloned OS on first. Never mind. I didn't do it in that order.Using the Windows Partition manager I made another two partitions on the 320GB drive, so 7 had two (the little 100mb one for its bootloader thing) and one for XP and one for files. Then, using EasyBCD 2.0 I made it so XP could be booted. However, XP would not boot past the welcome screen. This is because XP was confused, it had gone from a 2-partition drive to a 4-partition drive, also, from the first partition on the first to the third partition on the second.Online tutorials recommended that I erase the MountedDevices in XP's registry. So I did. No difference. At this point I tried three million and one online tutorials, ranging from setting new Disk ID's (which ruined both OS's) to downloading BartPE and XXclone. However, nothing worked. At this point, I found http://support.microsoft.com/kb/249321/ which seemed to outline my problem. ... Read more

The plan is to have a copy of Windows 7 on two drives, one is used for games and I won't be too concerned about viruses, security etc. The other drive will be kept more secure and be used for online banking etc. I would like to be able to use the bios boot menu to select the drive to boot from. I've had pretty much the same thing working with XP for years, but Windows 7 seems to be different for some reason. I've loaded Windows 7 Home Premium on a 320GB HD, loaded updates and then cloned the drive using Clonezilla to another drive of the same model. If I then remove either drive they will both boot perfectly fine. If I leave both drives in the computer, it will blue screen during startup and boot to Windows Startup Recovery on the following boot. Blue screen error is 0x0000007B Inaccessible boot device. I have tried both letting windows create the Windows System Recovery partition, and using an ubuntu disk to format the drive NTFS and force windows to install without the recovery partition. The results are the same either way. Both drives are now encrypted with Truecrypt full disk encryption, but the results were the same before encrypting. Does anyone have any thoughts on what I'm doing wrong? I did search the forums, but wasn't able to find anything similar. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I am trying to dual boot Kali with Windows 8.1 and I keep getting three errors at the installation menu. I also carefully checked that I have followed the installation instructions correctly and I have. Here are the three errors:

1.) "Empty Security Header"
2.) "error:/live/vmlinuz has invalid signature" (I double checked other sources and the grub.cfg file I have saved was/is written correctly)
3.) "error: you need to load the kernel first"
I understand this question may not be for this forum. I'm taking a shot on this in hopes that someone smart and savvy enough has the know how to help me with this and also since my OS is Windows 8.1, I'm assuming this can still be a question relevant to the forum.

Answer:Dual booting Kali in Windows 8.1 error help

This does not answer your question exactly.

I use YUMI from PenDriveLinux to boot into various Linux distros, like Kali, Tails and MINT, as well as rescue media, like Acronis, Hiren's, F-Secure, etc. Maybe a dozen or so boot time selectable distros and ISOs.

These are not installations, more like Live CDs.

However, I did not encounter any issues with Kali running on my machine and I didn't do anything special to make it start up.

From those error messages is it something to do with Secure Boot? I don't run that.

Good Morning,

Everyday, I learn something new about linux, and I try to use this forum as sounding board while I search the subject in parallel.

Problem: Compaq N410C, uploaded fresh with Ubuntu 9.10, trying to project the screen onto video out from the back of the box. Fn F4 when pressed creates momentary lines on the screen and no solid video. I know FnF10 with arrow up and down works fine, so I am guessing the keyboard is configured correctly.
Q: Not familiar with Linux enough to goof around with video setting, how do I check, my setting and would it be capable to do video out?
anyother recommendations most appreciated.

Thanks
jk

Answer:Linux 9.1 - compaq N410C video output

I believe those hot keys only work in windows.
To get an external monitor to display try this: switch display modes through system/preferences/display.

I have two identically configured compaq proliant 3000 P3 servers running mandrake 9.2 (kernel 2.4), both servers are updated at the same time so for all intents and purposes these machines are identical. HOWEVER...

One server, every other day or so, loses internet connectivity, that is to say the ethernet card seems to shut right off. Once off the card will not turn back on except when I completely cycle the power to the server, software attempts to get the card going are useless.

I took the ethernet cards out of both servers and swapped them and I still get the same problem on the same machine, it only started happening in the last month or so.

I have done a search on the web for info but I get so any responses to my search that are not applicable it is hard to sift through them all to find an answer.

Any thoughts?

Thank You!

Answer:Linux, Compaq Proliant connectivity problem.

What brand NICs are they? Is the link speed autonegotiated? Do you use a spanning tree algorithm on the switch? What happens if you swap the cables going into the servers (if physically possible?) Have you tried updating the system BIOS? Do you have the latest kernel for those Mandrakes?

I'm dualbooting Windows XP Pro

I found 64bit nvidia drivers and 64bit drivers for my Soundblaster Live! Value

My only problem is with the via 4in1's...I downloaded the package specifically for my K8T800 chipset and I get an error saying that the specified hardware can't be found...any ideas?

Also, windows update keeps telling my I need to be logged in as administrator for it to work. I am logged in as admin AND I chose RUN AS, then used the admin account...weird...but I guess that's why it's a beta

Answer:Dualbooting (not what you think...)

Cool!
I downloaded 64 off MSDN... I just don't have an Athlon or Itanium

Hi

I have XP on my pc, and wanted to have 98 also to run some games. so I ran fdisk and made the second partition on my hdd active, and installed win 98 on that. now both work alright after making the corresponding partition active using fdisk but i want to get 98 in XP boot menu.
I added an entry in boot.ini to point to the other partition, it just hangs.. someone said I need to extract the boot sector of that partition and make it available inthe C drive, I did that too, but it doesnt boot up to 98.
How can I setup the boot menu in XP to start win 98 setup in this way? or is there a different way of doing it?

thanks
murali

Please suggest how to Patition my 750GB Hard drive to Dual boot Win 7 & Xp to allow use of older Software etc. I'm Using a Packard Bell Easynote TE. Thanks

Answer:partitioning my HDD for dualbooting

If you have only one partition on the whole disk, you'd better make it two. so you can install two systems on separate partitions. you can use the free easeus partition manager to create some unallocated space, and make it another partition.
It might take you sometime depending on the size of the data. And do a disk backup before doing this.

Hey Guys..!
You're not gonna believe what my big question today is... Well, it's not that much of a big deal, just a lil challenge with dualbooting Vista and XP on a HP 530. I know a lot of CPU's today come pre-installed with Vista and are, consequently, not compatible with XP in many ways (Sound cards, modems and the likes). I also know that HP 530 happens to be one of these 'new generation laptops'. I currently have a 530 with Vista pre-installed and I want to add XP to the OS list on another partition. I'm quite familiar with the theory of multibooting but this is kinda like a different scenario. I've read about the 530 and a couple of people think one would have to get XP's SATA drivers for a 530 plus the sound card drivers but I think there may be more to it. My question is this: Can I get a complete guide to multibooting XP and Vista on a HP 530 that already has Vista installed such that both OSes run perfectly well with no incompabilities or reduced functionalities??? Useful comments, suggestions and link to useful articles are very much welcome. Thanks a lot in anticipation...!

Answer:Dualbooting Vista & XP on a HP 530

There's no quick and easy solution for this. Check out this post for what you've got to do to locate a driver for XP: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ind...st&p=976715We can take you through it, but it's gonna take a while. The first step is to install XP without hosing your Vista installation. I'm not real familiar with that, so I'll have to sit that part out. There are a bunch of different HP 530's on this page: http://h20180.www2.hp.com/apps/Lookup?h_la...&submit.y=0Which one is yours?Once we know that, we can use the procedure in the first link to help find the SATA drivers to get you started.

Question: Dualbooting issue.

I'll keep it short. I've been trying to install linux kali alongside  my Windows 8.1 for the last 6 hours and I'm very close to giving up.I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. Here's what I've been doing:1. Downloaded original linux image off their website.2. Extracted contents and copied them into a plain USB drive.3. Opened up Windows PC settings and set to 'Advanced Startup'.4. In the advanced startup options, I chose 'Boot from EFI USB' (or something along those lines).5. A black screen appeared, followed by a lenovo loading screen.6. Error message: "System doesn't have a boot from USB option". I restarted the laptop again, went into the BIOS by pressing F2 and checked to see if Boot from USB was enabled or not and it was enabled. Should I change the mode from UEFI to legacy? Because I've heard that can ruin my Windows 8 installation. Not sure what I'm doing wrong, hoping someone can clear this up.

Answer:Dualbooting issue.

Anyone?

I have XP Pro installed now. If I create two more partitions, can I install Vista RC1 to one of them, and Linux to another (which version to you recommend? Ive used Redhat once before.) and have a boot menu when I start the computer asking which Id like to start? Any tutorials on this?

Answer:Dualbooting or Tribooting

You can triple boot XP, Vista, and Linux (I suggest Xandros OCE). There are tons of tutorials, just google "dualbooting."

Although it has a limited selection, try: http://www.zegeniestudios.net/ldc/ Usually sets you up with a good distro that would fit your needs/knowledge.
