I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

ok, i'm compute illiterate and shouldn't be messing with my pc - BUT I DID, can't afford to have someone else help me. our pc has a 133 mhz processor (dont laugh) so i took out the hard drive and put it in another tower i bought at the thrift store (again, dont laugh). i installed win xp from cd - computer would only start in safe mode. when i restarted it, the pc would freeze on the windows xp screen. i put in xp cd to reboot - chose "repair win xp" and when it asked me what section i wanted to repair, i took a guess (stupid) and put "1". it then asked for administrators password - not knowing what it was, crazy me guessed - not once, but three times - after the third wrong password entry, pc shut off and now it won't even turn back on - AT ALL. HELP!!!!

My cousin brought her computer over for me to check. I just got through playing with it. It's a HP pavillion elite e9220y. I can turn it on but can't get into BIOS or restore, safe mode etc. It will boot from windows 7 disk but gets to the place where it is getting into windows and just freezes there. If I don't try to boot anything I finally get a screen that says file:\boot\BCD status oxc000000f.
error occurred when trying to read boot CD. I tried using ultimate boot cd etc also. I also used a windows xp pro disk I had and it goes until it loads everything and then when going into windows it stops & I get the blue screen. I had a little problem with it showing sometimes on the screen and have that taken care of that with another video card I had. I have tried another hard drive and no different.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Recently my graphics card stuffed up, whenever I restarted my computer there would be three consecutive 'beeps' and the screen would stay black. I had it repaired and the person handing me back my hard drive (not the guy who repaired it) said that a new card was installed and it was apparently better for gaming.
I played games such as Age of Empires III and Civilization 4, however the games crashed occasionally. Age of Empires had never crashed when my old graphics card was installed (Nvidia Geforce graphics card) however my new card is an Asus, and during the play of civilization 4 the terrain details would disappear and black squares would emerge, then the whole screen goes into negative colours, bright yellows, purples and greens and then the computer shuts off restarts several times. This happened several times before and I would just restart. However it happened and my computer never started again. I cleaned out the iside of the hard drive and removed the dust.
The computer is 4 years old but it was well maintained, the power supply had been changed 2-3 years earlier, its brand is Hi-Tech.
I was wondering wether it is a graphics card issue, power supply issue or motherboard issue. Also I was wandering if replacing parts or buying a new hard drive is the best thing to do.

I was using my computer and everything was going great when all of a sudden, it shuts down. Totally shuts down, no power, can't turn it back on, when I press the start-up button on the front of the computer nothing happens. I run AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition and Wondows Firewall, and the last anti-virus scan that I did (one was done that day) showed no viruses and no problems.

When I plug a power cord into the back of the computer, a light underneath the outlet on the back of the computer flashes for a second and the CPU fan also turns on just for a second. I have tried two different power cords, same story, when I try to turn the computer on nothing happens.

Could it be the power supply in the computer, that it needs to be replaced? What do you guys think?

Thank you.

Answer:computer crashed, shut down all of sudden, won't turn back on

It is extremely unlikely that this problem can be solved on this forum.
Your analysis is more than likely correct.
It is either a power supply unit problem or another major hardware failure.
If the computer is NOT a laptop, the first thing to do is open the case, without the power connected and check if the fan to the CPU and other cooling fans are full of dust. Are the fins of the CPU cooling blocked. If so the processor may have fried.
I would urge caution, if you are going to attempt repair yourself, as I have known people buy a PSU to find that this was NOT the problem and then a processor to establish that the CPU was not the problem etc etc etc.
You need if possible to run tests, however that requires in most cases special euipment. Testing a PSU with a voltmeter is sometimes extremely unreliable, as some PSU`s do not output voltage until there is a load.

I simply do not want Windows 10.  But I have no way of explaining that to Microsoft.  I have two computers, both Windows 7.  In fact, one is relatively new and I bought it because it shipped with W7.   I've tried three different W10 computers.  That's three strikes.
Within the last week, Microsoft has violated both of my computers.  I have my Windows Update set to notify me of downloads and let me decide.  One morning I woke to a "you must restart your computer" screen,
Yesterday while booting up the other computer, Windows wouldn't load.  That set me in a panic as it's less than a year old.  Actually, that computer shipped with W10 but after an unsuccessful marriage with the new OS, I went back to W7.  After about fifteen minutes I got a 'windows wouldn't load repair' tool.  It got me back.  When my computer came back up, there was a large GWX10 inventory check list starring me in the face.
I don't know how this is legal.  Yes, I am borrowing Windows but because I am, I don't expect that I've forfeited my rights as a private person to not be infringed on with probes and spying.  I should read the fine print on my user agreement as I just may have signed away my soul to Bill Gates.
The business model has changed drastically over the past fifteen or so years.  We used to have a firm wall of privacy and now it's gone.  I use a Corel photo editing pr... Read more

Little green dots, the behavior of gwx is utterly unacceptable* but there are things you can do to stop it. I'm not sure if I remember you posting about problems with it before but did you see my advise for which update to refuse and remove and on setting updates so they would not automatically install. I'm not sure how your update settings would be violated like this, it shouldn't be possible, but you seem to indicate that it happened. Did you perhaps accidentally allow some sort of "Problem "fixing"" thing to run which set windows update back to default settings? To diagnose what happened I really need more details.
How is your work with linux going, perhaps it's time you tried booting up a live USB (but be warned it'll be painfully slow, you'll want to install it onto a large fast USb or an external hard-drive as soon as possible to get yourself a full linux OS. Make sure to deactivate "secure"boot first and to set your system to boot from USB before the internal hard-drive. You might want to take the internal hard-drive out during installation of linux to an external drive, if removing the internal HDD is relatively easy.
*Not only is it unacceptable but it also is, by ms's word, supposed to be over by now, it shouldn't be able to do anything now that the free upgrade period expired in summer. When did the most recent unwanted upgrade happen to a system of yours?

Microsoft Edge has taken over my .pdf files from Adobe. They now open with Edge and prevent me from using Adobe features such as merging files ( have to print out the files I want to merge and then scan them in as a new file). All of the files switched from having an Adobe link to that big E (I guess for Edge). It has even given me trouble in converting documents to .pdf. How can I exorcise Edge?

I have a Lenovo desktop with Windows 10.

Our company has purchased 10 Thinkpad Edge 15 (Model ID: 0301RB7). They are mainly used by developer for programming. Two of them are used by the management and Microsoft Office 2010 (Home and Business) is thus installed on that PC. It is reported that those thinkpad couldn't work well with Powerpoint and outlook. Recently it is happening more and more frequent (app crash). We find this problem common on this model but not all others (e.g. Thinkpad Edge E520 or other brands) notebook so we suspect it could be the issue on Thinkpad Edge 15. Any fix patch or upgrade we could use to solve the problem? Best regards,Ho

I have the Microsoft Internet Explorer installed and made it my main/default webbrowser.
My problem is with Microsoft Edge though. Everytime i press ctrl+L(locking computer) and sign back in, a Microsoft Edge page just opens up with some countries name on the searchbar. It asked if I would like to make it my default webbroweser but clicked
the ''dont ask me again'' option. I closed the microsoft Edge browser, I locked my pc and signed back in and the same page opened again. I tried to find a solution in settings but got no luck.
Any of you have any ideas how to disable this ? Uninstalling the Edge isn't a option since it's a computer from work

Hi, I love this site and you guys have helped me so much, so first of all, thank you!

Now the bad news.... I got the WIndows Vista Repair virus about a month ago on my Acer PC. At first, it ran all of those warning messages and then it shut down the computer and reloaded as what appeared to be a completely wiped computer. The only icon on the desktop was the Windows Vista Repair. I tried to find programs by searching for a few minutes before trying to shut down (which the virus had also made me incapable of doing), and resorting to popping out the battery to shut it down. I restarted in safe mode with networking and tried to get on this site, but even in safe mode my browser was auto-redirecting me to sales sites. By following instructions for removal on this site, and downloading programs onto a flash drive from a different computer, I was able to get my computer in working order again, although it would still, at times, randomly shut down my internet browser (and the process and amount of time I spent getting it just to that state of operation was ridiculous, much worse than any virus I've EVER had...I can explain what all happened and the steps I took if necessary). A couple of weeks later, I left my computer on while I went to a friend's house for the night, and when I came back in the morning I couldn't get it to unfreeze. I shut it down and for the next two days, every time I tried to turn it on it would just run on a loop, booting up part of the way bu... Read more

Hi, you are asking questions on a phone that hasn't yet been made.
It will probably depend on what OS (Windows 10 mobile, Windows 10 for ARM, etc) that runs on the device.

Hi,  I am new to this community. I have been given a computer that was once used by a business who had done something funny to it. There is no recovery partition and when I put in a CD or DVD the computer doesn't recognize. I am trying to recover the computer with a wipe and reload. It was pre-installed with Windows 8 but does not appear to be anywhere in the computer as the only located Windows install that came up in command prompt was the Windows 7 Enterprise installed by the business.  I have spoken to Lenovo on the phone who said that I require Win 8 64 bit. I have that and am trying to boot from the live USB but it doesn't work. It had worked, before I had changed things in diskpart, but I only went into that because when I tried to restore to factory settings the computer came up with the error "Reset the PC as the required partition is not available" I had found a solution to this on Youtube and copied the guy but stuffed something up and now I can't get back into Command Prompt to correct the problem. I am now completely stuck in Boot Menu/Application Menu page. I cannot enter Windows start up page and I cannot boot from any live USB. I am stuck. There is also NO novo button on my keyboard.  Please help! Thank you.

Answer:Im stuck in the Boot Menu/Application Menu page when I turn on the computer. ThinkPad Edge E530.

:-oApologies if this is in wrong forum.

My old computer (XP) died and I am getting a replacement (Windows 7, Home). I pulled the old C Drive off and temporarily attached it to a laptop through a HDD Docking Caddy (not sure of terminology). I'm limping along on laptop accessing some critical data. My data is also backed up through Carbonite. I wonder about the following:

Install current C drive on new computer (as a slave drive?) and transfer data direct to new drive.

Download data from Carbonite (may take a long time-250 GB).

Use HDD caddy mentioned above and transfer data to new computer with USB.

Install C drive in a second desktop and use something like PC Mover to transfer data to new computer.

There may be more elegant ways of getting my ?stuff? onto the new computer. If so, lay it on me. I am reading the posts I can find which deal with this problem. Your suggestions, comments, and tips (especially about getting programs back) will be greatly appreciated. One post I read reminded me that any programs downloaded from the internet (and still available) could be unzipped and installed on the new machine using Windows 7.

I knew a lot about computers but alas, I forgot a lot.

Hi, I have a problem with windows XP. I use my laptop for school and, by keeping it on power saving mode, usually get through two school days without charging my laptop. Ever since I've downloaded Windows 10, (1) my computer doesn't shut off all the way when I close it, which drains the battery, and (2) every time I charge it, it turns off the power saving mode, which is really annoying. This is especially annoying when I don't notice it isn't on and my battery drains even faster. Is there any reason it won't turn off? Is there a setting I can use to keep the power saving mode on at all times?

Answer:Why won't my computer turn off all the way and why can't my computer stay on power saving mode?

Your system might have a virus, try to scan using Malwarebytes, Superspyware , Trojan-Killer. Restart your system then try to download Hitman Pro then Run it. Then optimize your system using Ccleaner. Hope this would help.

First of, my monitor exhibited signs of flickering during start-up, but only minor ones and would just stop at the 'Welcome' screen of windows so I didn't give it much thought. Iv'e been using it with the cpu the same time I bought the monitor.

But after some time, the flickering got worse. It went from 1-2 second interval flickers to a whole 10 seconds of blackness before it showed anything.

Now,Iv'e got a new cpu but still using the old monitor. After a day or so, the monitor exhibited the first symptoms of my first cpu, so I just dismissed it. But after a week, It got a hell worse, before I even start-up my computer, the monitor doesn't show Analog/Digital at the top-left corner of the screen. PLUS my cpu keeps restarting after I pushed the ON button after 10 seconds or so.

My question, Is the monitor responsible for the restart and what could be the reason for the flickering?

Thanks for a fast reply.

Welcome Pokeman5 to the windows 7 forums.

The graphics card might be your culprit. Please update your system configuration settings under user cp so that others can maybe help you.
Usually the monitor won't stop your machine from booting. The graphic card most likely be the cause.

There is also the possibility that your power supply could be defective or going bad. Lots of possibilities.

As the title said, my computer freezes during games. When it freezes the screen just stop at the last frame (so no black screen or anything like that) and I can hear the game for about a second before it turns to a low clicking sound. At which point I have to manually shut down the computer and restart it. Nothing else works. Then I get the usual question of how I want to start the computer, I always pick “start normally” and it’s like it never happened.

I think it’s because the GPU is overheating, because that’s the only component that’s really hot. When I check the temp while playing it’s usually building up to about 60C (24-30C on idle) and stays around that number. And it fells really hot when I touch it after it’s happened. The only problem with that theory is that I can play every game out there usually on the best setting (haven’t tried every powerful game out there) and not a single problem with lag or such. Then again, I’ve never had that problem with MW3, and the temp stays around 50C on that. Not to say that the GPU is really that great. It’s average at best, but I’m not a hardcore gamer or anything so figured I didn’t need the best.
I built the computer myself in June 2011. And it went fine without any problems until maybe 6 months ago, not really sure when it happened.

Here’s what I’ve done so far

Answer:Solved: computer beeping sounds when i turn on computer

There are three possibilities here, all related to your memory.

1) You have forgotten to fit your memory back in.
2) Your memory isn't properly seated in its slot(s)
3) You have killed your memory because of not following antistatic procedures.

I'm suspecting it is either 2 or 3.

I am having trouble with a 6 month old IBM R51 laptop - when I select TURN OFF COMPUTER from within Windows and the START button - the computer sometimes hangs and will not shut down. I have to press the power button to reset. Any idea what could be causing this?

Answer:Computer Hangs When Turn Off Computer Selected In Windows

Welcome to BC! There are many possible causes, however there is one common cause. Often XP's exit sound file gets corrupt and if it does not run then XP won't shut down. I am not sure based on what you have told us so far if this is the issue or not, but let's see:Go to:Start > Control Panel > Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices > Sounds and Audio Devices > Sounds tabUnder Program Events scroll down until you see Exit Windows. Highlight Exit Windows by clicking on it once. Then under Sounds choose None. Click Apply and finally OK. Reboot if possible, or shut down computer and restart manually. Once it is up and running, shut down computer by going to Start > Turn Off Computer. See if it will shut down on it's own now.If it does, the only difference will be that you will not longer hear the 2 seconds of music that XP usually plays as it shuts down.

Hi TheRealDanny.

The crash dump (a Stop 0x3B one) is not saying anything in detail about the probable cause of the BSOD).

Test your RAM modules for possible errors. How to Test and Diagnose RAM Issues with Memtest86+
Run memtest for at least 8 passes, preferably overnight.

If it start showing errors/red lines, stop testing. A single error is enough to determine that something is going bad there.
If it does not show any error, enable Driver Verifier to monitor the drivers. Driver Verifier - Enable and Disable
Run Driver Verifier for 24 hours or the occurrence of the next crash, whichever is earlier.

Why Driver Verifier:
It puts a stress on the drivers, ans so it makes the unstable drivers crash. Hopefully the driver that crashes is recorded in the memory dump.

How Can we know that DV is enabled:
It will make the system bit of slow, laggy.

Before enabling DV, make it sure that you have earlier System restore points made in your computer. You can check it easily by using CCleaner looking at Tools > System Restore.

If there is no points, make a System Restore Point manually before enabling DV.

Ok well, my computer is pretty old, but its not THAT old, it has always worked very well, and all of a sudden one day it froze and i tried turning it off but when i went to press the power button it wouldnt turn off, no matter how many times i pressed the power button. so i had to turn off the power switch in the back of the computer. it did this consistently so i decided to format my computer and delete the partition stuff like that, but it still did it, and i even virus checked and there were no viruses.

my computer freezes out of nowhere at random spots (startup, windows, my desktop, etc) and when i try to turn it off the power button doesnt work so i have to turn it off by turning off the switch at the back of the computer, please help me, i don't know whats going on!

Answer:URGENT PROBLEM: Computer freezes, but can not turn computer off

Try holding the power switch in for at least 4 seconds. There is a entry in BIOS for instant off and 4 second delay. Yours is probably set to 4 seconds. Delay is good as it prevents accidential power offs from hitting the switch by mistake.

If you are hiolding the switch in and it isn't powering down there are two possibilties. Switch is defective or connector has came off the header.

I just got this HP pavilion 762n last year. Now whenever I turn the computer on it won't respond(Goes to a Blank Black Screen) and the only way I can make the computer respond is to go to safe mode and UN-install the Graphic Card, then restart the computer back again. Once I've done that the computer would work, but I can't watch Videos or play Video Games on the computer. There also would be these little blue lines on the computer screen (Sometimes their would be alot of the lines and sometimes the lines would be made by the trail of my mouse).

I've tried lots of ways to fix the computer. I've tried:

- Un-installing and re-installing my graphic card (Nvidia Geforce4 MX420 graphics card with TV-Out) that came with the computer.

- Rolling Back My Graphic Card.

- Updating My Drive from Windows Update.

- I've tried using a program that test my computer and tells me whats wrong with it. It said I got a problem with something like the VIDEO MEMORY CARD and I don't know what that is.

Is the Only way I can fix this is to buy another Graphic Card. I do not want to waste $200.00. Please Help Me!

Thank You.

Hi all.
I moved out of a 14-year-old case (Gateway) and into an Ultra brand Gladiator mid-tower.

I have an EVGA nForce 650i Ultra Motherboard, and a "Power Up" brand 450-Watt power supply.

The setup worked fine in the old case, though Windows was freezing regularly after 15 minutes. I figured that was related to the hard-drive, since it wasn't tightly mounted, and I wasn't using enough cooling fans. So I got a new case and cannabalaized a fan from an old computer.

The power outlet and cord are good, and I swapped out the power supply with a 230 watt unit, and pulled the switch from the old case, but neither powered on the computer. Nothing seems out of the ordinary with the switch on the case I bought.

Did I buy a defective unit? Is there something I'm missing or should try again? Something else? Thanks for the help.

Answer:Changed computer cases, now computer won't turn on

Have you considered that going from a 450 psu to only a 230 might have something to do with it?

Is the motherboard shortening out by any part of it touching the case?

Question: Computer crashed

My computer has been crash dumping since I deleted a antivirus software that I guess sent viruses with it so I factory reset and that didn't work then I was told to try the adwcleaner from tech support that did help clean off and show me what viruses were which and even made my computer run extremely faster however this whole crash dump thing is driving me insane someone please help me!!!
I cant attach my minidumps because it keeps saying I need to contact the owner or give permission but where do I do that at I've already set myself as the administrator of this computer when I logged in

Jordan, I strongly suggest you start your own thread. Give us the name of the antivirus you deleted and the one you replaced it with. Also, download and run WhoCrashed and give us only the error code and any drivers it cited.

My computer crashed and I had to do a format and reinstall on Win7-64. I had a complete backup on an external drive. I've reinstalled Live Mail, but wonder where my contacts and mail folders are located in the backup. If I remember correctly, they're someplace in Users/App Data - but don't know where. Also, when I find them, can I simply move them to the same place on the reformatted drive and have them appear correctly? Thanks.

I created this thread about a week ago, and came to find out that my PSU was starting to fail me. While playing the first level of 'Sniper: Ghost Warrior' today, I heard a loud popping sound inside my CPU and instantly sensed a burning smell.

I immediately assumed it was my generic 550w PSU and took it out of my case. The money is tight lately, so I went on eBay to search for another, and bought this one. Was this a deadly crash? Can I still use my harddrive at some point? What about my other components? Are they toast? Was buying this 650w PSU a mistake? Can I just plug this PSU in and pick up where I left off? Lots of questions, thanks in advance.

Answer:Think my computer crashed.

i can understand if money is tight, but replacing a crappy psu with another crappy psu wasn't the best of ideas. just because it's a "gold" psu doesn't make good either... those ebay tricksters XD

i don't think there's any way to tell if the psu took anything out until you install another psu and test it.

it looks like that psu you bought has almost all the connections you need, except for your gfx card. does your gfx card require a pci-e connection? if it does then you're gonna have to get an adapter because that psu does not have one.

I have just completed building my first computer from a barebones package, AMD Athlon 64 3800, 512mb, Nvidia NForce motherboard together with a Creative Labs sound card and Asus Extreme AX300SE graphics card and XP Pro. I then put on Zone alarm, Spybot and AVG and then went on the internet to update everything when ZA said that it had discovered the Sasser worm. This was then quarantined but shortly afterwards the computer crashed to a blue screen saying -"it had closed windows to prevent any damage. My Computer Crashed On Me For No Reason
My computer I bought resently crashed on me for no apparently reason. When i plug the power in, it turns on but gets no signal from the monitor, and the power button does not work anymore when i try to turn it off. I have tried many things to fix this problem. I even switch parts by parts to my other computers and all the parts seem to work like RAM, HD, CD drives, and all other things. I reconnected the Panel 1 to make sure it was not the problem. I cleared the CMOS jumper. I cleaned out all dusts. I tried a new power box. So the only thing left is the motherboard.
This is the specifications for my computer
It is a Emachine T2825
CPU: AMD Athlon™ XP 2800+ Processor (2.083 GHz) with QuantiSpeed™ architecture
Operating System: Microsoft® Windows® XP Home Edition
Chipset: NVIDIA® nForce™2
Memory: 512 MB DDR (PC 2700)
Hard Drive: 120 GB HDD 2
Video: NVIDIA® GeForce4™ MX graphics (AGP 8X slot available)
Sound: nForce™ 6-channel Audio

I have searched on other forums and saw that there are others experiencing the same problem as mine.

Hi, my grandson's computer crashed. It's a Compaq Presario 5000, Windows Me, 128 MB memory, 20 GB hard drive, 56k modem, AMD Duron processer. The last time I was able to run a disk scan it had over 400 trojans and spyware in it.
Everytime I try to do anything with it, it gives this message"Another program is currently using this file". I can't do a disk clean up or defrag. I can't download anything that can get rid of all this. Is there any help for this mess?
I don't have any disks or recovery cd, it has had about 3 owners so far.

Running Virus scan and cumputer crashed. Restarted computer adn it could not detect the hard drive. I shut it down inspected the cables and found no issue. Hooked it up to a new power cord from power supply and and restarted and it detected the hard drive. Ran fine for awhile but then crashed again about 30 minutes later. I am running windows xp on a pentium 4. 1 gb ram and no viruses found with spybot or Ad-aware. I'm thinking it's a power supply but maybe a cable. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Answer:Computer Has Crashed

I may have an solution, but it could take upto 1 hour, or possibly longer depending on your hard drive space quota.1. Press "Start", on the very bottom left of your screen.2. Click "My Computer".3. Right Click "Properties" on "Local Disk". (If not local disk, your current harddrive.)4. Click "Tools" at the top of your Harddrive properties, with other tabs.5. "Error-checking" ... "Check Now".. click that and tick all boxes and click start, and now restart. It'll take time, but it'll help, or it should do.

Question: computer crashed

I have a no-name computer that stopped working when I moved the monitor just an inch yesterday (???). The monitor works fine now, but the computer tries to boot to the Nvidia Boot Agent, and I can't get into the BIOS. I don't have the original startup disk for Win XP, just a CD with someone's writing on it that it's a WinXP disk with SP2 on it. When I try to boot from it, it says I can reinstall Windows or use the Recovery Console, but the RC is not installed so it goes to the C: prompt. How can I install the Recovery Console and try to figure out what happened? There is no floppy drive on the computer, but I have a flash drive.

I hauled in my laptop from home, so I'm using that to seek help. thanks for any assistance!

Answer:computer crashed

I'm not sure what the Nvidia Boot Agent is but the C: prompt is the recovery console. The C: prompt allows you to enter commands to carry out certain functions while the system is running in DOS and it is called the recovery console.

Have you got any disks in the CD/DVD drive by any chance? or a flash drive plugged in?

Do you know if you have a Recovery Partition on your harddrive?

I have an emachine--model #W2646, windows xp home edition. I only had it for almost 2yrs. Let me explain what happened-- My computer wasn't even turned on, all I did was unplug my pc, because i needed to use the outlet for something else. When I plugged it back in, it turned on by itself, but my screen stayed blank. I tried turning it off by the power button, but it won't turn off. The only way I can get it to shut down, is by keeping it unplugged. I tried plugging it into a different outlet, but I'm still having the same problem, the power button will light up, and stay lit as long as its plugged. I tried pressing and holding the power button, to get it to shut down or reboot, still no luck. I haven't had any problems with my pc, before now--someone please help. I don't know whats wrong with it.

Question: Computer Crashed

My computer crashed about 2 weeks ago and I'm slowly reloading everything, to try and get back to how our computer was originally working. I don't really know much about computers, so it's been a real task for me!

When I purchased the computer [18 months ago] they asked if the kids played alot of games and video files etc, and they recommended a different motherboard. The kids are now complaining that their games and avi files are running out of sync [avi files have voice running faster than video - I watched one and it seems to me that the video is running slower than the audio]

I've reinstalled Windows XP and Nero [they use to use Showtime to watch things] but I have two other disks that came with the computer - SiS Chipset Motherboard Utilities CD and GIGABYTE Tech. Graphics Accelerator Driver CD. Should I be installing these as well? Could this be why their games and videos are running out of sync and slow?

Thanks for any help.

Answer:Computer Crashed

Lola - before you install any software, you have to install all the drivers, load up these cds and you will be able to install drivers, otherwise system will crash.

In future, once windows xp is install, make sure you have all the original cds which came with your computer handy, and then you install the drivers.

Once that has done, you can then update windows xp.

Answer:Computer Crashed.

I think that you may require a repair install. A Vista DVD is needed. This can be bought for cost from the manufcaturer of your computer.
Repair Install For Vista[11]=Performance Maintenance

We can try an SFC, (if possible) but I think that the above will be required.

Hello , I have a desktop PC -- Windows 7 -- i5 -- it will not boot up -- it starts and stops and starts and stops -- someone looked at it and thought it needs a new motherboard -- I might buy a refurbished desktop:
Dell Optiplex 780 SF Windows 10 Home Core 2 Duo 2.93 Ghz 8 GB
I have a solid state HD plus a 500 GB HD in the one that crashed.
Could I put my two hard drives into the new computer, replacing the smaller HD in the new computer and still use the Windows 10? Dave

Try booting to the Recovery Console and using - chkdsk /r - and see if it will come back to the desktop. You can add the command - fixboot - just for good measure, after you run chkdsk.

Grab your handy dandy XP disc and change your boot order in BIOS to boot from the CD. Get into the recovery console by hitting 'R' when prompted to. Once in the command prompt, type "fixmbr" without the quotation marks. Exit out, and change your boot order back to the HDD first.

Hey all,

I've found this really useful tool you can use when your pc BSOD's and you want to figure out why (it runs on x86 AND x64)

It's called Whocrashed Home edition (there's also a pro edition) and you can download it here: Resplendence Software - WhoCrashed, automatic crash dump analyzer

Tell me what you think about it

Answer:Who crashed your computer?

Nice but note

WhoCrashed relies on the Windows Debugging Package (WinDbg) from Microsoft. If this is not installed, WhoCrashed will download and extract this package automatically for you.

So what is the point you could ask. Some benefits in getting a quick overview of many dumps I guess. If all features in Pro version were in free it would be cool, now just nice

Pro features:
Crash dump analysis on remote computers on the network
Crash dump analysis of a local dump directory of your choice
More detailed analysis of crash dumps
License not limited to use at home only

Question: Computer Crashed

Hope I'm in the right forum. My Wife's computer basically locked up 2 days ago. It's a 5 year old machine but worked like a charm up to that point. It's running XP SP3. Our kids do use the machine so that's always a concern. She first noticed that she lost her internet connection. I know the signals getting to her machine based on my modem indicators. The lights are flashing on the ethernet card for whatever that's worth.

I can't seem to get anything to work. I wanted to check Mcafee to make sure I didn't let it expire and allow a virus issue. Wouldn't open. Rebooted several times with no change. The lower Taskbar is off the screen and I can't seem to get it back, so no start button to access programs not on the desktop. I can open " my computer " but it won't tell me If I have an internet connection. I think I must have connectivity.

The unit will open up documents and such but it won't do anything that involves a process. Mozilla opens to a non-selected page with no function. Of course outlook express is dead as well. I tried System Restore, but when I hit the OK to get the process rolling, it just bounces out of the screen.

If it's puked this PC doesn't owe us anything. I just figured I'd bounce this off you guys because I'm no trouble-shooter. I wish I could better explain how it's behaving but I'm an intermediate user at best. Any input would be much appreciated.

Huge problem, when I go to start up my Windows XP, where there should be a welcome screen it reads:

Unable to Locate Component
This application has failed to start becayse SHLWAPI.dll was not found. Re installing the application may fix the problem.

Does anyone at all know how to fix this?!

Answer:HELP! crashed computer!

If you have an XP CD try this:

To Extract a file using the Recovery Console

Insert your Windows XP CD and restart the computer.
At the prompt 'Press any key to boot from CD', press Enter.
Windows Setup will load. This takes a few minutes.

After Setup loads, press R on your keyboard to enter the Recovery Console.
At the prompt to select 'Which Windows installation would you like to log onto', on your keyboard press the number of the installation. This will usually be 1 unless you are dual-booting.
You will get to a prompt C:\WINDOWS

You now have to locate your CD drive. The CD drive letter will depend on if/how your hard drive is partitioned and the number of CD drives. To do this:

Type D: and press Enter
If there is a valid D: drive type in dir

You are looking for a listing of files that will look something like this:

If D: doesn't give this result try typing in E: followed by dir
If E: doesn't give this result try typing in F: followed by dir

When you have located the CD drive type in the following:

expand i386\shlwapi.dl_ C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 /y

(Note the spaces: after expand; before C: and before /y
and that's a letter i in front of 386
and that's an underscore after dl)

Press the Enter key.
You should get a confirmation that the file was expanded.

Restart the computer by pressing the power button, remove the CD, and boot up normally.

Question: Computer Crashed

Hi, My computer crashed and when I turn it on all I get is a black screen that says insert diskette. I originally had ME on but upgraded to XP. I tried to put the upgrade disc in and would go as far as Windows setup then I can try to do a repair when I do a Repair comes up on C prompt but not sure what to do from here. If I try to do a reinstall it asks for Original OS and all I have are the system restoration disc of Windows ME which the comp does not recognize and the XP upgrade.

Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:Computer Crashed

Not to sure but it possibly sounds like a problem in the Boot Sector. If it is this and from the experience ive had the command "FIXBOOT" at that repair section you mentioned will rebuild the boot sector and should allow you to boot windows again.

Question: Computer crashed

Windows XP SP2

My computer crashed after I uninstalled Cheetah DVD Burner 2.44. After it restarted, a screen popped up that said:

"We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this..."

and it gave me the option of booting in Safe Mode, Last Known Good Configuration, or Start Windows Normally. None of these worked. The computer simply restarted when the Windows screen popped up. I used my sister's computer to find help and came upon this article:

and followed the steps. But when I got to the part where I'm supposed to copy the system, software, sam, security, and default files from the repair folder, I couldn't continue because the system file was missing. So, I copied the system.bak file I'd just created:

copy c:\windows\tmp\system.bak c:\windows\system32\config\system

and typed EXIT. When I restarted the computer I got the same "We apologize for the inconvenience," message. So, I went back to the Recovery Console, but now I can't log on to it because it needs my Administrator's Password. My computer doesn't have one. I just pressed ENTER the last time, but now it won't accept that. I used a program (loginrecovery) to see if I had an Administrator's Password, but it couldn't find one. What do I do?

Answer:Computer crashed

How to recover from a corrupted registry that prevents Windows XP from starting
Warning Do not use the procedure that is described in this article if your computer has an OEM-installed operating system. The system hive on OEM installations creates passwords and user accounts that did not exist previously. If you use the procedure that is described in this article, you may not be able to log back into the recovery console to restore the original registry hives.

You now need to continue the "off-line System Restore" using another system to do the task.
Using another system, makes the task easier, simpler and more direct (and it avoids the OEM problem that you have encountered).
The "other system" could be another computer to which you connect the problematic hard drive.
The "other system" could be a LIVE CD, such as one of the Linux versions or UBCD4Win or BartPE etc. Do not install: Simply run the system LIVE, loaded into memory from the CD.

If you have an XP installation CD, I would recommend that you use BartPE or UBCD4Win to create a bootable disk:

Otherwise, choose a Linux version:
Puppy Linux (at only 105MB download size, it is the smallest)

Linux Mint 7 (My personal recommendation because not only is it GOOD, it is BEAUTIFUL !!!) Read more

Question: Computer crashed

Hi, we have a problem with our computer and it seems pretty major and I was wondering if any of you could help. It's my mom's computer, a HP pavillion, a few years old.

A few years ago I had an emachines computer that just crashed one day - it had never worked very well so I just let it go and got a Dell. My brother took the emachines, and seemed to get it to work but it just crashed again. So he took out the hard drive, some RAM, a dvd drive and an nvidia video card out of it and installed it on my mom's HP. Everything seemed to work fine, he played a lot of games and stuff. But tonight the HP crashed. We didn't find out or know until after he left, but it turns out he was leaving for the weekend, and he was going to take 'his' hard drive out and take it with him to play the games. But something went on with the video (we don't know exactly what - I think maybe the video card software was on the drive he was taking so there wasn't any video when he took it out?) and he put everything back in and back together, said everything was fine and he checked his email, and he left. But when my mom went to get on after he was gone, the computer was off, and she always leaves it on during the day.

So the problem is, windows won't load, or it won't last very long - it goes to a blue error screen that says there has been a problem and windows has closed to protect the computer from damage. It gives some suggestions, like making sure the... Read more

Question: Computer Crashed

I have a desktop running Windows XP SP3 and it has been crashing lately. It has a 1.80GHZ Processor and 1GB of RAM.

It will lock up and dump memory. I have included a link to the minidump file to this thread, Also I tried to read it in a debugger but apparently do not have needed symbols.

Thanks for the help.

Please do not post messages saying try this or try that. I appreciate your efforts but I would rather have someone pinpoint this problem by reading the mindump rather than advising to update all ram, run memtest, chkdsk, etc...

Answer:Computer Crashed

Please carry out the following steps and I will have a look at the information and see if I can shed some light on your BSOD issue. Download the following 2 files and save both to the My Documents folder:BSOD_XP_v1.3_jcgriff2_PROD_.exe - a system file collection application provided by jcgriff2 autoruns.exe - an application provided by Microsoft SysInternals. Go to the My Documents folder and run #1 (BSOD_XP_v1.3_jcgriff2_PROD_.exe). (That will also run #2.)It will take a little time to complete: Please be patient and wait for it to finish.A new folder named TSF_XP_Support will be created in My Documents. Zip up the newly created TSF_XP_Support folder.Right-click on the TSF_XP_Support folder > Send to ... > Compressed (zipped) Folder. The newly created zip file will be located in the My Documents folder. Please upload the zip file to a file sharing website of your choice and and post a link to it in this thread so that we can access your uploaded zip file. Please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy, and post a link to it in this thread. It is a convenient and accurate way of providing us with details of your computer specifications.Interesting minidump! I'd like to have a look at some more. WinDbg txt is attached for your interest.

Question: Computer Crashed

Recently, for whatever reason once I turned my computer off it wouldn't turn back on normally. It's stuck on the loading screen.

However, it seems to be working on Safe Mode + Networking.

So, tried to go to System Recovery but evidently it's "Turned off." The system restore is off. It showed me how to turn it on but when I went to Systems, "System protection" wasn't there to click to turn it back on.

So, I really don't know what ot do at ths point. Repairing the computer didn't see to work.

Well the computer is back up. The virus was Win32:Rootkit-gen [Rtk] and when Avast quarantined it it removed some critical Windows files with the virus. I can at least use the system but the print spooler will not start. It is set to automatic but when I try to start it it says Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified.

Also the sound card will not work. There is a yellow ! on the card in device manager and under properties it says, This device cannot start. (code 10)
