Computer won't turn on, no lights, black screen

Question: Computer won't turn on, no lights, black screen

Hi! I have a problem - my computer won't turn on and it shows a black screen all the time. It does not show any blinking lights at the front side, nothing. The only things that turns on when I press the power button are DVD RW and cooler. The computer is a little older, but still was functional until recently.Configuration:Zeus motherboard (I can't find the series number)Processor Intel Celeron e3300 2.5 GHzRAM 3x512 DDR2Graphic card Leadtek Winfast px9500gt 1 GB 128bit DDR2Please help!

Preferred Solution: Computer won't turn on, no lights, black screen

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello to you all, my Dell family!

So here is what the issue is:
1. Sounds buttons are flashing as follow - both left and right are blicking, while the midle one is stand still (just lighting).
2. Screen remains black
3. Hard-drive is ON (also chceck on HD tune - totally OK)
4. Change my cell primary battery - won´t do anything.
5. Can´t get to BIOS, can´t reach win - because of the black screen.

What should I do?

Thank you very much in advance.

I have a bit of a strange issue with my computer. Forgive me if I'm a little too descriptive, but I'm not sure which details are relevant and which are not for such a problem. First, the specs:

Model: eMachines T2984
Operating System: Windows XP Service Pack 2
Processor: Intel Celeron D Processor 340, 2.93 GHZ, 256K L2 Cache, 533 MHZ FSB
Power Supply Unit: Bestec Model: ATX-250-12E REV: P7
Motherboard: I can't tell, but it appears to be an Intel motherboard by the number of Intel labels on it
RAM: 512 MB DDR SD originally, added 1 GB a couple of months ago
Let me know if you need anything else...

Yesterday, I got home from shopping around 1PM, and I tried to start the computer. I pushed the power button, and nothing happened. I checked all of the cords, and they were all plugged in. Not knowing what else to do, I opened up the case to see if there was something obviously wrong. The only thing that I noticed (other than a bunch of dust) was that the power supply unit was still hot. I shut the computer down about 5 hours earlier after about 20 minutes of use, so it seemed strange that the power supply was still hot. I unplugged the computer just in case there was some sort of fire hazard.

At this point, I called a friend who suggested that the problem might be with the motherboard or the power supply unit.

A few hours later, I plugged it back in to try to get it to work. As soon as I plugged it in, the entire unit suddenly started "running" by itsel... Read more

Answer:Computer Doesn't Turn on, Fans and Some Lights Turn on Automatically

I would suspect that the Power Supply Unit (PSU) is going south. If you have a spare one laying around, install it and see if the problem goes away.
You can buy a new, better PSU from Newegg for about $40.00. I have used a Thermaltake 430 watt in one of my machines for some time now and it works well.
You will have to check the size of your PSU to be sure a new one will fit into the eMachine.
Here's the page with that PSU on it. It's the last one on the list.

I turn on my computer, it begans to start up, and then the moniter just goes black and won't show the desktop or anything. It has done this every day for the past week or more and it's getting harder and harder to get onto the computer. What I do is turn the moniter on/off until it shows me a glimpse of the desktop, and then I mess with the screen saver power options (while it continues to keep going black and I have to turn the moniter on and off to get glimpes of what i'm doing), and eventually it just stops going black and works for the whole rest of the day until the next morning. I checked the FAQs and I heard people with the same situation mention video cards, but I'm not that great with computers and frankly I don't even know what that is. Help?

My computer was dusty and may have been overheating. The fans were operating very loudly and i tried to turn on the screen but it is black. I cleaned the dust, and it still will not bring anything up on the screen. The fans work and i can hear the drives working. I tried changing the psu, cleaning the heatsink, and reseating everything. and removed the battery and put it back in to reset the bios. Nothing has worked so far. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated? Is it possible that i fried my motherboard or processor?

So I got a hp pavilion tx510us entertainment notebook (runs Vista) and it seems to turn on (like all the lights are on and it makes noises) but the screen is black/blank or whatever. And its not just a blank screen because then I would have been able to put my pass in and then hear the turn on music and stuff. The thing is this happened before when it was still under warranty so I sent it in for free and they sent it back and it turned on and it still had on all my stuff so it must have been an easy enough solution, but when I chatted with them again I guess they don't keep track of what they did to it and they want me to send it in again and that would cost a large sum of money because its no longer under warranty. I did a hard reset a few times and took out the memory module and put it back in agian but still nothing. So, anyone have any ideas?

My computer that i own isn't working properly. Firstly, its about 4-5 years old the power button gets stuck. I've been fiddling with it from the outside to come out all the way since if it goes in all the way and doesnt come out, it keeps restarting. When i wiggle it out, it starts and goes.

Now onto my problem now. When i start up my computer, a screen pops up allowing me to press F1 for setup. if i don't click F1, my computer goes to a black screen with a _ blinking in the top right. I can't do anything from that point and when i press keys too many times, it starts beeping after i hit any key again.

Anyways if you guys could help me, I would be very thankful!

Answer:Turn on my computer, black screen

sounds like it may be time for an upgrade

have you made any hardware changes or installed new device drivers?

from what you describe it seems like the system is having some issues booting the operating system from the hard drive, or there could be another hardware fault causing the hangup... like the memory or motherboard itself. if you are able to view the POST screen upon startup (which displays all of the system information and keys to access BIOS etc...) then you may be able to boot from a CD-ROM to run repairs or possibly boot into safe mode by repeatedly striking the F8 key after the POST screen appears.

i am using my laptop to report this.cause i can't use the one with the black screen.HELP!!!!!! when it first comes on its like it tries to start but just stays black.can it be fixed or do i have to buy a new screen?(i'm not sure if its called the screen or the monitor.i just know that when i turn the tower on,there is no picture .

Answer:black screen after i turn my tower to my other computer on.r

If you do not see the message "No Signal" on the monitor screen, very likely it's the monitor itself which is faulty or "dead".To check if it is indeed the monitor which needs replacing, connect it to your laptop if possible (there should be a VGA port on one side of your laptop so you can connect the monitor using the same VGA cable that connects monitor to your PC). If the monitor does not work on your laptop either, you need a new monitor. However, if your tower is not starting up it won't be a faulty monitor. There is something wrong inside the tower. Get someone to check it over, maybe needs a new PSU (Power Supply Unit) which fits inside the tower.Do not rush out to buy a new monitor if the tower is not starting up as the problem will be inside the tower.message edited by phil22

HI,
My problem started back when i tried to install windows 7 on another disk, but it would not. Now i did this while my primary windows 7 hard drive was already istalled. after i gave up on trying to get windows to install onto this secondary hard drive, i rebooted the computer to find that my primary ssd would not load windows, and simple came to a black screen that said:

Remove disks or other media.
Press any key to restart

then i would press a key and it would say:

Reboot and select proper boot device
or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key.

I have no recovery disk and most definitely do not understand what remove disks or other media means because I removed the windows installer dis and tried again but nothing happened. Please help, i am so confused, thankyou.

My wifes laptop has developed a problem. On booting it starts with the "Windows starting " logo and then goes to a black screen and goes no further. It looks like the hard drive is still flashing away giving the impression that underneath it is still working but no picture. We want to use the repair disc that came with the laptop but because we cant see anything to shut the computer down via windows we are having to use the power button and therefore it prompts to start up again in safe mode because it was shut down unusually. We want to close it down completely and let the repair disc do its work on boot up from fresh start. Because we cant see anything on the screen to initiate shut down via windows is there another way of shutting down completely for the above reasons.
Also do I need to press f2 and tell the system boot from the cd (repair disc) or can I leave settings as is and it will do it automatically. Answers appreciated asap. Many thanks

Answer:How else do I turn off windows when computer has black screen.

On many laptops pressing and releasing the on/off button acts as a re-set but if you hold the power button down for 5 to 10 seconds the machine will turn off completely.

I was playing a game on my PC while it was storming out and the power surged. Before I could unplug my pc the power came back on and my computer started back up. After starting back up it said installing update do not turn off the computer. I waited until it was done then it brought me to a black screen with a Windows logo and a circular loading bar. I waited somewhere between 5-10minutes before holding down the power button until it turned off. Upon turning the computer back on all the fans would work and everything it would show the blue screen that says to press esc then brings me to a black screen where it would have a _ mark in the top left and beep non stop. It isnt a long beep or anything its just multiple beeps non stop until I turn it off. I have tried taking out the ram and putting it back in but it just keeps beeping. I did a mem test and it showed that nothin was wrong with the ram. The beeps are high pitched and very fast. I have a video showing what happens if there is a way to post it.

I've seen this problem posted a lot, but never with all of the same details as me.  I have Windows 8, but unsure if 64 or 32, I"m guessing 64.  I have a sealed battery, so I'm unable to remove the battery.   I rarely see my model number mentioned at all. I have turned the computer off and back on several times with peripherals removed.  Right now, it's on and open (so it's not asleep) and not plugged in.  All I can see and get is a black screen.  The caps light blinks now and again. I really would rather not reset and lose everthing, of course, who does?   What do I do?

I searched on the internet and it is probably a virus caught from a pen drive.
How can i clean my computer and the infected pen drive?

Hi Guys,

I got a virus this morning and moved it to chest and then I restarted it, when it began to boot, it froze for about a minute at the boot screen then proceeded to load after this, so I shut it down and turned it back on and had to wait about a minute on the boot screen to get past it, it so I went into the bios and clicked the reset to optimized defaults incase it had a problem, so I saved it and exited.

The computer then booted it as it would do when i turn it on but now the screen stays black?

Anyone have any suggestions what to do? as its just black and I can't see anything to get into the bios or such?

Thanks in advance

Answer:Turn Computer On Screen Is Black After Bios Change?

Try unplugging the PC and removing the CMOS battery from the motherboard for 30-45 minutes. This will clear the BIOS settings.

Hope this helps.

Answer:turn on the computer and power light goes on but screen remains black

If this is a notebook PC, try connecting an external monitor to the VGA port. If the display comes up on the external monitor, it points to an issue with the screen.

If there is no display on an external monitor connected to a notebook PC, it points to an issue with the motherboard and will require a professional diagnosis.

Hope this helps.

I recently had to take my computer in to be fixed only to find out my GPU was fried but the guy there was going to way overcharge me to install a new GPU so I decided to do it myself as I have done so before. So I got a new video card, I installed it, I clicked the power button and the cpu fan spins for half a second and then nothing. I called the computer guy and he said when he had it there it was working fine with other video cards and would start up fine. So now I don't want to pay him yet again to try to figure out why it won't even turn on. I've try reseating the memory, reseating the GPU. The lights on the motherboard and the lights for the power inputs to my GPU are on and yet it still won't start. I don't know what to do next. I hope one of you fine people here can help

My specs in case it matters:
CPU: AMD FX-8350
GPU: ASUS STRIX GTX 980 OC
RAM: 12GB
PSU: 750W

Answer:Computer won't turn on but motherboard and GPU lights are on

What's the brand name and complete model number and revision number of the motherboard?

What's the brand name and complete model number of the 750W power supply?

Your "computer guy" doesn't sound like he's very reliable.

We have no way of knowing what he did to your computer and why it won't start and load Windows.

My computer recently refused to turn on. It had been working perfectly the evening before. I could not smell anything burning or hear anything irregular.

On the advice of Corsair, I bridged a green and black wire on the PSU's 24-pin connector to test whether it was at fault. Upon turning the PSU on with the two wires bridged, the fan began to rotate. So either this is not to blame, or the PSU only partially functions.

I cannot figure out what component is at fault, and replacing parts would be quite an expensive guessing game. The Corsair PSU has a 5 year warranty; however, they require me to mail it to California. Being in Australia, this is quite inconvenient and I would rather fork out for a new one. My motherboard, I assume, is out of warranty.

My specifications are as follows:
Gigabyte P35-DS3P Motherboard
Corsair HX-620 PSU
4xCorsair DDR2 6400C4 (4Gb)
Gigabyte 8800GTS 512Mb (G92)
Antec P182 Tower
Intel E6750 Core2Duo 2.66Ghz
Asus 1814BL 18xDVD+-RW IDE
Western Digital 320G SATAII 7200 rpm HDD(Primary)
Seagate 250Gb SATAII 7200 rpm HDD(Secondary)

I purchased/built it on the 19th of December in 2007

Thank you for any assistance.

Hello. I'm currently setting up a new T430s. I noticed that the Wifi and HDD activity lights are not on. However, wifi is working fine and obviously the HD works. Is this normal or is something wrong? Thanks!

Answer:T430s - Wi-fi and HDD Activity lights on the bottom of LCD screen are off. Does yours turn on?

That's not normal. I'd report this to Lenovo support. It could be a loose connection in the LED circuitry or a defective board.

Out of curiosity, do the other lights, e.g. for power and sleep, on the other side of the lid work properly?

I went to use my laptop and it wouldn't turn on, the only thing that was running was the fan and it was much louder than usual. When I returned to the laptop a few hours later, the fan was finally off and the computer was unresponsive, no lights or sounds at all. I tried the hard reset and that didn't work. I tried numerous outlets and still no power. What else can I possibly do?

Was troubleshooting a computer that won't start

Scenario:
Computer worked perfectly fine, underwent an update, and inexplicably crashed. Trying to turn it on won't so much as hint at a flicker of any light whatsoever on a motherboard, or screen, or even make a sound from a fan, or turn a fan on, etc. Absolutely dead.

Troubleshooting:
Tried a brand new PSU to no avail. Disconnected previous one, and connected new one exactly as the previous one had been connected. Flipped the switch in the back of the new PSU to 'On', and tried the 'On' button on the case. No peripherals were attached whatsoever at any time. No joy.

Under these circumstances, would the problem most likely lie in a tossed-out motherboard, or CPU, and why? I imagine these could be the only two culprits, unless a bad CPU fan could be a candidate? A fun note: this is a refurbished computer (I wonder why those are a bad idea?)

*Added* It was the windows 8.1 update that the crash happened under (but not necessarily caused by), and the computer is a Gateway DX4870 that had 8 installed already. This should be it: Newegg.com - Refurbished: Gateway DX Series DX4870-UB2B (DT.GEEAA.002) Desktop PC Intel Core i3 3240 (3.40GHz) 6GB DDR3 1TB HDD Capacity Windows 8 64-Bit

Thanks for any help!

hi,new here,I really hope someone around here can help me...

I have an HP Desktop that is about 3 years old, it has an AMD Athlon Processor, Windows Vista, 2GB Hard Drive and a very old Nvidia 6150 Card...

a couple of months ago the computer stopped working properly, it would turn on, but it would freeze or sometimes, it wouldn't start....I took it to a tech guy who had it for about a month and he couldn't find what the real problem was! then when I had lost all faith, I went into the HP website and saw that my pc's model had an alert from HP, in it it said that some of those models had a bad motherboard and that they would extend warranty and replace the motherboard for free...

I contacted them and they sent DHL to pick up my computer and I got it back 2 weeks later and it had been working great until today!

this is a family computer, but hasn't been used as much lately because now most family members have laptops, still it's used for about 5 hours a day...this morning someone turned it on for about an hour and then turned it off without a problem...3 hours later someone turns it on and this is what happens:

1. Computer makes noise, no beeps, only normal computer starting up noise.
2. The light that checks the cd drive turns on.
3. The fans are running.
4. Power button is on, but when I turn on the monitor it says "no signal" and it goes to sleep.

Have an HP laptop that shut down during a game on Facebook. Upon reboot, had an error message. Researched message on HP's site, found message was related to hard drive failure. Purchased exact hard drive again and replaced. Tried recovering with disks purchased originally for laptop from HP and got message, system recovery disk did not support this system. (Disk numbers did not match packaging). HP sent new disks, when inserted got message no bootable device found. Contacted HP tech support, was told to power on laptop and repeatedly hit the escape key. Nothing happened, just a black screen. Was then told to unplug laptop, pull battery and hold power button for 20 seconds, then to power on and hit escape repeatedly again. After this attempt the light beside the Caps Lock key and the light beside the Altec Lansing Logo were flashing about once a second and still had black screen. HP tech support then stated the motherboard was bad. Now can't even get into the Bios. I no longer have the original error message as I thought the new hard drive would fix the problem. Just wondered if HP was correct and the motherboard was bad... Have a HP desktop and was told by them it was the motherboard and it wasn't.

I've browsed around various threads and I still couldnt find an answer, so I'll try my luck by asking.

My hp dv5 laptop does not boot up straight away, all that happens a blank screen awith flashing keyboard lights. I can get it to start but only after repeatedly turning it on and off for an hour or two( many wasted hours -_-)
This all started as a minor issue where it would take about 3 or 4 restarts and then would proceed to boot up normally. As time went on it grew increasingly longer, so i looked around on various forums and I read a few problems people had with poorly applied thermal paste on heatsinks. I bought some paste and disassembled my laptop to the mother board( cleaned it out in the process) the previous thermopaste had cemented and so I removed it and applied the new paste. Once assembled, the problem still remained.
I'd appreciate any help as I don't have big mulah to spend on new laptops or expensive parts. Thanks in advance

Hey guys. I'm just trying to help out a friend. I think I know what the problem is but I just wanted to get a second opinion, and maybe a third and a fourth. I think the problem is the power supply but before I send this poor college student out to buy a new one I just wanted to make sure.

Any way, she has an old Packard Bell running with a Pentium 200MMX . It's an AT power supply. What happened is she turns the machine on and the power light blinks on, the cpu fan spins for about a half sec. and then nothing. No power, no beep codes. So, she brought it over, I plugged my cord into it and the same problem. I checked all connections in the computer and everything looks ok. Then, I disconnected the power supply from the motherboard and then connected it. Plugged it in with the same cord and the machine turned on with no problem. Booted up to Windows and everything. Even let it run and checked out some basic programs to make sure nothing happened. I thought it was just a funny glitch (keep in mind that no one has ever opened this machine since it was purchased) so I packed it up and sent her home with a extra power cord just in case. Of course I got a call and she was having the same problem. So, what's the verdict hardware guru's, power supply or serious problem?

It's hard to say what the problem is but I would try a new power supply first. AT power supplies are usually pretty cheap too. BOL

Hello, a week ago I had what I am now refering to as Major Disaster Number One. When I turned on my Laptop it didn't boot had a black screen and made loud beeping noises. This was eventually resolved by removing one of the memory cards as one of the slots was defective. In the meantime I had done quite a lot of fiddling with the system.

The PC had been working fine for a whole week until Major Disaster Number Two happened today. This time thankfully no loud beeping but black screen and flashing num/caps locks (twice). According to the HP website 2 flashes indicates a BIOS problem. I did what was recommended and took battery out and pressed power button for a minute. Tried this several times in different combinations but with no success. Tried reconnecting hard drive and swapping memory around again.

Actually something I should mention is that when I first turned it on today it came up with a white screen, totally white, and after waiting a minute I impatiently turned the computer off at which point it refused to turn on again.

I have looked on various forums including this one but don't know what the PC terminology "post" and "flash" mean with reference to boot up and bios.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I'm not sure if this is in the right area or not.

I had my laptop on and running fine for a few hours accumulatively (because I did put it in sleep mode ocasionally) last night and then one time I turned it off and when I turned it back on it lit up but nothing came up on the screen.

I turned it back off by holding down the power button and decided to let it cool down. Later I turned it back on and it was working fine seemingly and then it would "turn off" because the screen went black but the lights were still on. Then it would refuse to turn on for a while. I let it set overnight and I turned it on and it seemed to work again but then it did that thing I mentioned where the screen goes black but the lights are still on and it won't turn back on now. Well, it will turn on because the lights will be on but nothing will show on the screen.

I also think there might be a chance there is a virus on it. My alert keeps popping up and telling me that there is but it says it's quarantined and infected or something. I don't really know how to explain it.

I decided to change the fan following the steps that I found on the lenovo website.I did everything the right way but when  I tried to boot the computer, I heard the sound saying that it is starting, however my screen was black and the lights are not flashing anymore.I also noticed that the fan does not start spining.I am totally desperate and hope that I can fin some help here! Pardon my english, not a native speaker.Thank you guys!

Answer:Black screen and no lights flashing on monitor on t410

Welcome to the forum!

Is the fan connector properly attached? And did you remove the battery when you were doing the fan swap?

If you have an external monitor you can try connecting it to to the T410 and check if you get video output there. Also check if the LCD cable is properly connected.

I have a Gateway M685-E laptop running XP and Ubuntu, this morning when pushed the power button nothing would load.

The AC LED stays on as well as the light under the power button, while the NumLock and the CapsLock flash on then off, which might be normal.

The screen stays black but you can tell it is getting power by the shade of black it changes when it powers up.

The last time I used it I shut it off by holding the power button.

So far I have tried:

Removing AC power and battery
Removing RAM
Removing CMOS battery (or whatever its called, it looks like a watch battery)
Removing Hard Drive

I'm praying that its not a fried Mother Board, could it be a corrupted BIOS?
Please help,
thanks

Hello Forum,

Summary: Weird burning smell for 2 or 3 boots --> Doesn't turn on, no sounds or lights from comp --> replaced power supply --> worked for a few boots --> back to completely nonresponsive state 15 mins later (details follow....)

I do not know the system specs and I can't find them out without posting this issue at this time. It may not be that necessary to know the details but I can find out soon if necessary. Let's just say it is NOT a new computer - the motherboard is large - I could tell you the model in a later post - the processor is 1.x GHz, something like 512 MB RAM, I have 2 HDs. I am running Win XP.

Old Power supply: Was pretty old, up to 10 years old but maybe a few years younger (300 or 350 W). I haven't seen the computer much for 3 years since I started using and it was upgraded in the meantime.

One day I turned on my computer and shortly afterwards the room started smelling like burning metal/rubber or something acridly foul. Opened the case and nothing seemed to be boiling or noticeably hot, though I didn't really touch around. The only thing that was reasonably warm was the P/S. I thought I noticed the smell coming from it but it was only slightly smellier in that area, at most. Didn't add anything special or change anything in comp recently beforehand. Played loud music on in the night before but the speakers have their own power supply.

So I decided to replace the P/S - I purchased an hec HP485D 485W ... Read more

Answer:Solved: Computer Won't Turn on, no lights, replaced power supply

It's extremely likey that when your PSU blew it damaged your mobo as well. If you have removed and replaced everything else and nothing works then it's either your mobo or cpu. In this case it's likely your mobo.

Problem description:
I built my computer in January 2008. When it is turned on, there is a blue light on the front panel next to the power button that burns steadily (Case is from Cooler Master).

Most nights I turn my computer off when I go to bed. Sometimes though I don't and leave it running all night. The longest I've ever had it on non-stop is probably about 72 hours. After about 30 minutes my monitor goes on standby and switches off. It wakes up and returns to desktop when I press a button or move the mouse.

Last night I kept it on. It had been off the previous night so it was probably now running for about 20 hours. When I returned to it this morning I moved the mouse and pressed some buttons and nothing happened.

I tried turning the monitor on and off but it remained on standby.
So I decided to restart the computer. I pressed the restart button on the front panel but nothing happened. I held down the main power button for 20 seconds and nothing happened. At this point I noticed that the blue light was flashing instead of steadily burning.
The only way I could turn it off was by turning off the psu power button at the back.

I can not get the POST screen to appear. In summary, I can not get my computer to boot up when I turn it on. I can only turn it off by disconnecting the power.

When I press the power button, the blue light flashes; and the numlock, capslock and third light on my keyboard flash as well. The monitor does not turn on and there are no beep... Read more

Context of the problem
Laptop model: L322XBIOS version: A08
I seem to be having virtually the exact same issue as this one.
http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/t/19522061.aspx
Except I am on A08.
Basically the laptop will not boot, I cannot even get into the bios because it never boots to the dell logo.  It started happening maybe a week ago, but after a few trials normally it would work again and boot into windows.  At this point though it will not boot at all.
I have tried his solution at the bottom of the page, but after 30 plus trials it still will not update the firmware to A09.
I am currently completely unable to boot to the dell logo, or windows, every time it tries to start it hangs with the keyboard lit up, and the screen fully black.  I can boot to the dos bios update utility as he explains in his post, but again it will not update the firmware ever.  Any idea what I should do?
Is there anyway I can force it to boot into the bios so I can try to change some settings?  I looked but could not find any jumpers in the documentation for resetting the bios.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

Answer:L322X Will not boot, keyboard lights up but screen stays black.

Model CQ61 319WM This is a friend's computer.  Yes, it's old.  But, it was working fine until it went into sleep mode last night.  Hasn't come up since. Searches took me to this HP support page.  Win+B and Power on does not show the BIOS restore screen.  It just shows the same black screen.  It mentions trying more than once.  I tried at least a half dozen times.  Removed the battery and unplugged the power for a few seconds prior to some of the tries. The BIOS download (sp48895.exe) does not provide the option to format a USB drive as bootable.  I searched around and created my own bootable thumb drive.  Then, copied the BIOS files onto it. Unfortunately, that method also uses the Win+B and power on to bring up the boot order screen.  All I get is black. There are a bunch of "black screen" threads on here.  I've read several of them.  But, I haven't found any others that appear to apply to this model. Suggestions appreciated. Drake Christensen

After powering back on, the screen was lifeless -black like if the computer was off (no logo or anything -completely dead). Nothing was visible on the screen -There was no response from the hdd light either.I tried to press F1 to access Bios -I tried to press the blue Thinkvantage butten -no response. Then I tried to turn it off and on with the startup disk for Vista Business  -the CD/DVD drive sounded like it was trying to access the disc but after a while it gave up (the screen was lifeless all this time too)Itried leaving the computer off for about half an hour, but there is no change. I don't understand this -even if the hdd was unreadable I should at least be able to access Bios. Seems like the computer is totally dead. Hey guys.

Ok so the other day i was on my laptop and suddenly the screen went black, but the fan was still running and the lights were on. I restarted my laptop and the screen was still black yet everything else seemed to be running fine. I had a quick read on some forums and overheating was suggested. My laptop does get rather hot so i thought this could be the problem. I removed the heatsink and fans, removed all of the dust and put more heat paste onto the processor.
This time, the laptop turned on. The computer was running about 5-10mins, i had connected to the internet and windows live, then the computer restarted itself. After the restart, the same black screen problem occured. I decided to have another fiddle with the parts, and again, it started up. But this time, the computer went terribly slow on the windows loading screen. So slow that i thought it had frozen. It also sounded as if the fans had turned off.
I've been trying and fiddling round with components all day today. I found a post which said to remove things one at a time and try to start up the laptop to see what happens. The only thing which caused the laptop to turn on was the LAN card. As soon as the computer was restarted, it froze at the windows start up again.

I find it weird that it works sometimes and then others it just doesn't. If there is anyone out there with a solution it would be glady appreciated. I don't think it's an overheating problem as i've made sure it's cooled down propperly an... Read more

Answer:Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Pro v3515 - Black screen, lights on.

If the computer is still running then I think the screen issue may be caused by a bad connection for the backlighting system (or a bad inverter if it's a CCFL backlight). This is if the screen goes completely black, if it is black with some apparent light still I would guess a bad video connection. I think you may have made things worse with your attempted fix :/.

Hi everyone, I'd really like to get some help here.

My relatively new Satellite U920T-10G blacks out for no reason. I turned it on as tablet and when I pulled the keyboard, it just went black. At first, when I hid the keyboard the screen will just work again but now it is just not working anyway (eventhough I see its on!) Iam sure I must be missing something as this did not happen in the couple of months Ive been using it.

Thank you in advance!!!

Hi Claudia

I don?t have this machine and cannot say what the problem can be. Try to roll back OS to earlier time when it worked just to see if this will help. If not try to reinstall OS using recovery image installation and test it with ?factory settings?.

Everything works fine except for a little something that is just annoying.
I can deal with it, im just wondering why it would happen.
Im using an SSD to boot up. Everything works fine and fast except when it gets to the Windows Splash screen.
The monitor seems to lose signal and my g15 keyboard's LCD shuts off and i wait for about 6 seconds. After that i can hear the login sound my keyboard LCD turns back on while the monitor goes back to the DVI connection displaying the login screen
Anyone know why this would happen after the windows splash screen?
Is it drivers?
Using an asrock z77 extreme6 MOBO, SSD firmware is updated

Answer:Monitor loses signal, keyboard lights turn off after windows splash screen, long delay

It's probably loading the drivers for them. Try updating the drivers for video and your keyboard.

Hey all. Got windows 7 on my g555, with truecrypt on the drive, if it matters.  Last night, closed down the cover of my laptop before i fell asleep, like always, today it doesn't respond at all when I opened it back up.  Forced it to shut down, and haven't seen anything but a black screen since. The power light comes on, the fan comes on, and that's about it.  Can't get to the bios, can't do ANYTHING.  Tried unplugging it for a while, pressing power 10 times, holding power down for a minute, ran the battery entirely dry THEN discharged the caps, ...I've read many solutions where its the built up static charge that's the problem, but not here.  I've tried all versions of the solution I could find, all very similar, but none worked.  I took out my RAM and put it back in, and same for the hard drive.  No dice. The only lights I get at all are the power light, and the battery charging light next to it.  Can't get the CAPS LOCK, num lock, any of that to do anything.  Cannot boot by CD/DVD as I cannot change the bios, and can't get any response from any keys or key combos that I can think of (including the one-touch restore). Any advice?  What can I try here to get this sucker going again?

Hello Folks,

I'm not sure if my issue is with hardware (possibly MB?) or graphics card, so please forgive me if I've posted in the wrong section. The first problem I was having was random blue screens of death that displayed graphic card driver issues. I was able to remedy that by updating my graphic drivers and have not had an issue since.

However, ever since then I have been running into another hardware or graphics-related issue that is random and completely stumping me. What is happening is, I will be on my computer, leave and turn my monitor off, and (randomly) when I come back to use my computer again, when I turn on the monitor there is no signal and a black screen (e.g. when I turn my monitor on my desktop will pop up and the light on my monitor will turn blue, when it doesn't turn on there will be a black screen and the light on the monitor stays yellow as if it is idle). I have tried swapping out the monitor to see if that was the issue and the same problem persists, so it does not appear to be my monitor or VGA cables.

The only way I can temporarily fix this issue is to reboot/restart my computer and viola! The monitor works again and I can see everything. This issue is very random. Sometimes I can go weeks without an incident, other times this is happening a couple times a week. I honestly don't know if it's my motherboard or video card or what. My PC isn't overheating, I'm not overclocking, and all of my drivers are updated.

I'm not sure what... Read more

I just put together my first computer 6 months ago. It abruply shutdow in the middle of writing a paper for school. I couldn't turn it back on right away. after trying a few times, it turned on. All the fans are working even the fan on the power supply, the motherboards lights are on. My graphic card in on the motherboard. I think it might be my power supply because when I first put it together I didn't plug in the smaller power connection to the motherboard and the same thing is happening, black screen. It's like my computer isn't giving my monitor any feed. I will have more info when I get home. I can't get in to bios or safe mode.

You can try a new  RAM stick. What you describe can be: Anything overloads the PSU, or a failing PSU Bad memory in the low region. BIOS  can't run without it. Bad CPU, or heat sink not in placeDisconnect the HDD and the DVD drive. (Power off, of course.)Power on. Does it  show the  BIOS?

Answer:Fans turn on, lights blink and then turn off/on repeatedly.

First, I would unplug everything that isn't necessary. Everything external except for the keyboard and monitor. Internally, just leave the CPU, RAM and video card installed. See if it turns on. If not, you might try and test the power button. Disconnect the power button from the mobo. If the pin headers allow for it, use the reset button as the power button. If not, you can use a flat head screwdriver to power on the computer (cross the two pins for the power button with the blade of the screwdriver). If you do this, just be very careful. Touch only the power button pins and nothing else! You could easily damage components by touching the screwdriver to the wrong thing.

Some motherboards have a power button right on the board that you can press to power on the computer. I looked at a pic of your board and didn't notice one.

If that doesn't do it, plug the power button back in. You might try and play around with the RAM. I don't know if you have 2 or 4 sticks of RAM, but try and boot the computer with only one stick of RAM at a time. If there's a bad stick, you'll find it through this process of elimination.

If none of the above works, then it might be a bad PSU.

Answer:Dell Inspiron 15R won't turn on ! No lights will turn on .

Hi PARTH511722,
What is the exact system model?
Are you using an original Dell OEM Adapter? When you plug in the adapter to the system, does the adapter stay firm or does it fall off easily? Is the adapter frayed? Is there any damage on the system? Could you test with another power adapter if possible? Could you try powering on with another battery?
Remove the memory and disconnect the HDD and try powering on the system with adapter only / battery only and check.
Does the adapter led stay on and stable or does it go off when connected to the system?
If the adapter led is stable when connected to the system and there are no signs of power, then the motherboard is suspected faulty.
Also, please click my DELL-username and write me a private conversation with the service tag and your Name for case records.
Let us know if you have any other queries.

Answer:My lenovo g510 shows black screen every time I power it on but the power lights are on .

Hi Anish1,

Welcome to the Forums

As per the query we understood that you are facing issue with black screen in your Lenovo G510 laptop.

As you have mentioned that black screen when turned on, can you hear the windows login sound?
Remove the battery and connect only adapter and check for the issue also connect only battery and check for the issue.

Connect an external monitor and check if the display appears in the external monitor then its a issue with the LCD, if there is no display in the external monitor then it might be issue with the motherboard, hence suggest you to visit the nearest authorised service centre.

Click here for the service centre and select your region.

I have a HP Probook 4710s. The screen remains black when I turn the computer on. The other lights work, like the power button and caps lock while turning on. It happened suddenly, the screen worked perfectly earlier. I tried unplugging the charger, taking out the battery and holding the power button etc but it did not work. What could be the problem and how can I solve it? Thank you

Answer:Black screen (won't turn on)

Shine a light on the screen and see if the image is there but just faint. If so, the backlight failed. Otherwise, I'd suspect a video issue (video chipset, cabling, screen).

After installing Windows Service Pack 2 on our other computer, it started to freeze up, the screen would go black and it won't turn off. Control/alt/delete won't work, the power button won't shut if off, all we can do is pull the plug. We uninstalled ServicePack2 thinking that was the cause, but it still randomely does this. Sometimes it does it while playing various games and other times when just surfing the web. No warning of any kind, just a black screen and not being able to turn it off at all. I was wondering if system restore back to before we installed the Service Pack would work, or reinstsalling windows (a huge pain) or complete reformate (a bigger pain). Anyone have an easier suggsetion?

Answer:Black screen and won't turn off

There is no harm in trying system restore as it is reversible.

Then go into ControlPanel>Settings>Display and turn off your screensaver altogether. If your problem is solved, you can put the screensaver back on, altho I would choose a diff one that what you had first. If the problem stays gone, you could go back to the orig screensaver and see if it is ok.

I have a Compaq Notebook PC with Windows 7. I was using it the other night and i locked it as I always do, and I opened the lid the next morning and the screen was black. So I shut it down with the power button and turned it back on, but the screen was still black. I don't know what to do with it. I haven't even had it a year. I bought it February of 2010. I really need help, I have no clue what to do... Please help!!

Answer:My laptop will turn on, but the screen is black.

Well, you should of posted in Windows 7 forum, so I'll move it for you. But being it is less then a year old, and I've never heard of a laptop with less then a year of warranty, you should contact Compaq about getting it repaired. But things to check, is the brightness turned up? There should be a key on the keyboard that'll adjust the brightness levels. Also, most Windows laptops have an option to turn the screen off when connected to an external screen. Look for that button on the keyboard and cycle it a few times and see if your screen comes back to life. Also, find a monitor to plug into the video out port on the laptop and see if you get a picture on it.

I have a Dell Latitude C610, with Win2K. My hubby says he played a music CD he made recently & the laptop froze up. He says the CD played OK. He took it out, laptop still froze, turned it off for a few hours, & when he tried again, nothing would work. The CD plays OK in my desktop, so it seems that's not the cause, was just trying to accurately report what happened.

I come home, check it out, the screen is black, and it's still warm, & I can't turn it off. The on light is lit, the battery light is blinking. I tried unplugging it, but it stayed on using the battery. Nothing happens when I push the power button. I know a black screen isn't a good sign. I'd just like to turn it off & back on again, that works with my desktop.

What else should I try?

Answer:Black screen when I turn on Satellite M

Hello!

Have you connected an external monitor to the notebook? I ask this because at the moment it?s hard to say if it?s mainboard or monitor problem. Check this!!!

But I assume it?s something wrong with the hardware if this happens before Windows boot. Maybe it would be a good option if you go to an authorized service provider for help. They can check the notebook and tell you what the reason is for that.

Ok this is kind of weird. Ive recently installed a game and while playing I miss typed some keys (which are near the region of ESC, including that one, the one next to 1, and a sleep button). Somehow, a combination of miss typed keys lock my computer. It stops, then the screen goes black, and the CPU light starts to blink and the fan runs likes crazy.

Then nothing..., i cant turn the CPU off, cant restart it, cant press any key to do anything. The computer just wont turn off. The only way to restart the system is to pull the plug, but that has caused my some trouble already.

It has been happening to me sometimes (i think around four or five times) and i need to know what is happening to my computer and how to solve the problem without pulling the plug if this comes to happen again.

Thank you very much for the help (and sorry for my bad english)

Greetings all, so lately I've been having some problems with my Dell Vostro A860 that runs Windows Vista Home Basic 32-bit service pack 2. Anyway recently I've been having problems with my laptop. I often leave my laptop on while I'm around the house doing things, mainly it's downloading or running a virus check, but when I return the screen is off (which is good, I set my screen to turn off after a few minutes) but when I try to get the screen to turn on again by pressing a key on the keyboard or clicking the touchpad or moving it nothing happens. I can't get the screen to turn back on and so I am forced to hard reset my laptop which I really don't like to do. When I start up the computer again it works fine but I notice that not much of my downloads or scan have been completed like the computer froze pretty early on.

At first I thought it was a virus or something so I posted on the appropriate forums on here, here is the link to that topic:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic414131.html

Unfortunately it appears that this isn't the problem so now I'm here trying to find help to resolve this issue. I hope someone out there knows the cause of this problem and a way I can fix it. Thanks in advance!

For several months the monitor (LCD) turns black for about 3 seconds, returns to normal for about 3 seconds, then black for another 3 seconds and back again to normal. This can happen off or on line, there is no loss of connection or work. This can occur at anytime during PC activity ? in most cases it is just once and rarely twice in the session. At first I thought that it might be the monitor, but having just acquired a new Acer 19?, I am still confronted with the same problem, which leads me to think that it might be the PC.It is a Powerc built AMD Sempron 3000+ Athlon.OS XP Home.I would appreciate any comments from members has may have had a similar problem.Thank you.
