I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello all,     I am strongly considering purchasing a Flex 4.  This model in particular:https://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/en_US/pdp/Lenovo-Ideapad-Flex-4-1480-80VD-Signature-Editi...I know the processor supports virtualization, but I'm unsure if virtualization is enabled in the bios or if it is supported by the Motherboard.  Can anyone provide an answer so I can pull the trigger on this thing?  I need it as a lightweight mobile web development PC.

Laptop display turns off randomly, also sometimes the display fades to white, or the blacks on the display appear as red, or sometimes there are just weird line patters. The system is still on, occasionally putting the pc into sleep mode then waking it up can turn the display back on, but it usally just turns back off either immediately or after a few minutes.   In fact it just turned off the display and I am having to extend the display onto another monitor right now. This has been happening for months and putting it in tablet mode seemed to help, but recently it happens with such frequency that the computer is nearly unusable I have run diagnostics and it says everything is ok.all updates have been done as wellI have also tried disabling each of the graphics cards one at a time with no effect any ideas

Hello, I have had this Flex3 since March (6 months)I have had a few problems arise that have been addressed here. The latest problem is my screen flickering.I was watching a live service and the screen started to get darker and the edges had a green look to them and the battery, wifi, click etc on bottom right were broken lines  ( if that makes sense )It took 4 times to restart. I just kept restarting, but the same things were open.It FINALLY did restart and the programs closed, but I still have this flickering screen. It no longer has the tint to it but still flickering. Just wondering what I should try to get this to stop.

My brand new Flex 4 1480 won't start. After plugging in the AC power, the battery status indicator light next to the power jack turns on and stays solid white. But when I press the power button, the keyboard backlight turns on then off again and the power status indicator light next to the power button blinks for 5 seconds before turning off. The screen stays dark the whole time. I have tried plugging in the AC power and leaving it overnight but the story is the same when I try to turn the laptop on the next morning.

Answer:Flex 4 1480 80VD000AUS won't start

Hi Alikhlas99,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

The hardware manual does offer power checkout guidelines (page21) that you can review.
You are not required removing the battery as per in-warranty troubleshooting so that you can simply call in technical support for a recommendation. Same thing if you do not have tools to check the adapter functionality.

Just to isolate the issue, status indicators itself can be a good reference (page29) for the tech support team to assess the issue. Try to illuminate the screen with a flashlight and see if there are traceable display. If still none, then try powering the system using the Novo Button (item2 page 63) if you have the same on then off symptoms then most likely you may need in-warranty repair.

Is this a "feature" of the ELAN touch pad?  Is there any way to get rid of it?  The beeping is really annoying.

Answer:Two Finger Scroll Beeps on Flex 3 1480

Same problem.  Started when I had my bluetooth playing music from the laptop and I was doing other work.  So I shut the bluetooth off and now it does it from the computer speakers?  Very annoying beeping sound.   It seemed to go away when I unplugged it?  Did you have yours plugged in?  Did you find a fix for this?

I have a Flex 3 1480 that was purchased from Costco. with a 3 year warranty.I am having the same issues that alot of other people are having where the screen will go black out of nowhere.Yesterday alone it happened 12 times. (yes I wrote down everytime it happened) I have updated the bios and all other updates that were posted in a different post. The Flex is runnning the latest version of Windows 10 with all updates installed. I called tech support yesterday but got nowhere real fast. The lady did not speak very good english and what I did make out was her telling me to remove my ethernet card!! What can I do now? This laptop is useless now. Its only good for browising the net since I wont lose any work that way.I have lost to much work trying to use this laptop that I no longer trust it. Since Lenovo does not stand behind their products and come up with a fix I guess I will try to return it to costco. Hopfully a class action lawsuit arises as selling this junk is Fraud and I have been Scammed. I knew I should have stuck with Dell!

Ever since the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, our Flex 3 crashes every hour. Unfortunately, Lenovo's customer service is just a faint shadow of IBM's former service. Every rep comes up with a different idea, and then doesn't follow up on commitments.

Hello everyone!  In December I switched back to PC from Mac and purchased the Flex 4. Love the machine until a few months after purchase the screen started to flicker on and off without warning. Sometimes the screen just goes bright white or the color black on the screen is displayed as red. I downloaded the solution center and it keeps telling me everything is running as normal which is clearly not the case. A bit more about my machine: Windows 10Intel i7-750016GB RamAMD Radeon R5 M430 As far as I can tell, all my everything is up to date. Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated!

I can access my wi-fi at first, but after a few minutes it says I'm not connected.   Then I have to reboot to connect again.   What is going on?

Answer:Lenova Flex 3 1480 does not stay conneted to wi-fi

Try the following. Right-click on Start, select Run, type:   powercfg.cpl   and then press EnterLocate the active power plan on your Laptop, and then select Change Plan SettingsSelect Change Advanced Power SettingsLeft-click on the plus sign by wireless Adapter Setting to expand, and then do the same to expand Power Saving Mode and make sure it is set to Maximum PerformanceMake sure to do so for both the while plugged in, and while on batter power plans. If still having issue, do the following too. Right-click on StartSelect Device ManagerLeft-click on Network Adapters to expandRight-click on your WiFi Adapter and select PropertiesSelect the Power Management Tab, and de-select the option to "Allow the Computer to power off this device to save power".Updating the driver for you Wireless Adapter would also be a good idea if not up to date, but I do not see anything released recently posted by Lenovo on the support site for the Lenovo Flex 3 1480.    Good Luck,

Hi everyone, have a Lenovo Flex 3 1480 that is out of warranty (2 years old) and this week it started flickering when charging.  So I tried another charger, same thing, tried another battery... which actually is a higher charge and doesn't flicker from charging to not, but won't go above the % it was already on.  I've fiddled with tons of programs and googled the heck out of it.  Has anyone had a fix for this without replacing the entire motherboard? It also doesn't appear to charge when off. thanks!

LENOVO Flex 3 - 1480 I recently uninstalled Lenovo Accelerator Application and now my device is slower and less efficient than usual.  Major Problems If my notebook's screen is not being used for more than two minutes, then my notebook glitches out (meaning that I cannot operate it) and takes another two minutes to un-glitch out (meaning that I can operate my notebook again). For example - leaving my mouse cursor on the desktop for two minutes  (malfunction example), watching a video or movie (non-malfunction example). A few other low end apps and games not downloaded from Windows Store either does not operate at all or is EXTREMELY slow. For example -  Broforce (a low end game that is now extremely slow), Adobe Flash Player (an application that does not work at all now). These problems weren't there before but now they are really bugging me. What I tried  I downloaded Adanced System Care Pro (the paid version) and OneKey Optimiser (by LENOVO).These aplications only heped me a little but the major problems are still there My Request Please give me a replacement application in place of LENOVO Accelerator  Application. Any other solution are also welcome A VERY BIG THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO HAVE, ARE AND WILL CONTRIBUTE TO THIS DISCUSSION

Answer:flex 4 1480 shuts down after 5 minutes when on battery

Hello SupernoveThanks for using the Lenovo forums. If this happens in the BIOS screen, then I believe this would indicate a hardware issue instead.

Try a static discharge for this, it may help to resolve the issue or at least get rid of any built up static on the motherboard.(If the battery is internal, please just skip the remove/replace battery steps.)1. Turn the unit off2. Remove the battery and the Mains adapter3. Press and hold the front power button for 30 seconds4. Replace the battery and the Mains adapter5. Turn the unit on as normal If that does not work, attempt a factory reset on the unit, this would confirm if this is a hardware issue with the unit.
Note: Please back up all your data as running this reset will delete any data on your machine1. Turn the machine off and press the recovery button which is located usually next to the power button. If you have a desktop machine you will need to power the machine back on and keep tapping the F2 key. 2. Use the arrow keys and press enter on system recovery. ( Desktop users can skip this) 3. Select ?restore from the initial backup? and then ?Next?. 4. Click ?start? and accept the warning messages. Length of time can vary depending on the speed of the machine.
If these steps do not work I would recommend, that you call your local Lenovo support line for a possible service. Below is the link to the phone list where you can find these numbers

My laptop will not charge. Well, the charging indicator flickers, and when I try to charge it and get it working, the percentage will stay at the percentage it was when it started charging.  I had it plugged in two nights ago, while using it, and I heard a pop and saw the charger move in the outlet. That's when the problem occurred. I can't even use it, which is a problem because I'm in a high school where one to one is a thing. My warranty is expired, so please help! Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Greetings all, I am having issues with my SD Card Reader. I have a Lenovo Flex 3-1480, running Win 10 x64. Recently, I downloaded and installed the Lenovo Companion, and have used it to install drivers. It installed a Card Reader Driver - 10 [64]  V.4.5.0.6. Now, when I try to use my SD reader, I get an Unknown Device pop up in my Device Manager. When I try to update this device, it automatically locates a Genesys Logic USB3.0 Card Reader which promptly indicates is not intended for this platform [Code 28]. I am unable to install the driver at all. I can no longer use my SD reader, for anything, it just isn't registered with the system now. Please help or advise, I need that reader to work, I store just about everything on those cards. I have tried running the Companion, and it does not locate any more drivers, and also indicates that the system is running good, no errors. I have also tried using Intel Driver Update Utility, and still get nowhere. Has anyone else experienced this?

I purchased a Lenovo Flex 4 1480 about a month ago and just recently made the transition from my old laptop. I love this laptop but I am encountering some speed issues with it. Some apps are taking a while to load, but what is the most frustrating is using the web. Web pages on all browsers are taking somewhere between 8-10 seconds to load, and with this machine running a Core i7 7500U processor with 8 GBs of ram, I know this is not right (my old laptop loads pages much faster than this!!!).  I was wondering if this is just some driver problem or I should bring it back to where I bought it since it is still under warranty. Any input would be great!

Make sure to reboot after an update on the unit.
Have you by any chance installed anything that could potentially be interfeering with the system operations? Recent update perhaps.

Is this a bad frame design? Do you think this will badly affect the screen in the long run? Thanks for any input.

Hi, I recently purchased a refurb Lenovo Flex 3 1480 model and I am starting to see problems with the display that others have noted on here.  It sometimes flickers on and off and occassionally completely turns off and will not come back on without a restart.   So in troubleshooting this issue I have upgraded my BIOS to version DCN32WW from DCN28WW.  This was more difficult than it sounds because for some reason the PC identified the older DCN28WW as the newer firmware.  I had to override the setting in the BIOS to allow it to install the "older"firmware DCN32WW.  Made no sense. The latest thing I am trying to do is update the Intel VGA 520 display driver to the latest version published on 7/16/16 ver. 20.19.15.4454.  I downloaded the installer from the Flex 3 1480 section of the suppport site. When I try to install it, however, it tells me it is not compatible with my device.  I have tried uninstalling the driver and then installing the newest one and it still won't install.  The driver currently on my machine is 20.19.15.4364.  Can someone explain why I cannot get the newest display driver to install on my laptop?

About three days ago my Flex 3 1480 stopped charging its battery. This message appears above the taskbar battery icon:  ?0% available - plugged in, charging."  The computer now only comes on with the ac power adapter plugged in. I have used another adapter (identical specs) with the same negative result on my computer.  My adapter works fine on the other computer. These are fixes recommended at various internet sites that I have tried without success: System restore to a point several days before problem appeared.Uninstalled both battery drivers in Device Manager and restart reinstalled - three times. The battery is internal so I would like to fix without having to remove the battery if possible. Resetting the battery and resetting the bios are on-line recommendations that I don?t really know how to do safely. In searching the Lenovo site, I have been unable to find this problem addressed. The Lenovo Vantage Hardware Scan shows all in good order ? the battery itself is rated Good. The Flex 3 is 2 years old and is now out of warranty. Any help to correct and get the battery charging would be appreciated. Thank you, GB

My daughter has a Flex 4 1480.  She has been having intermittent display problems for a few weeks however failed to mention it to me until now.  Ironically her warranty expired two days ago!  The display will often go black after start up or if put in Flex mode.  At times she claims she'll get red, green, yellow on the display. I am unable to contact Lenovo support because its out of warranty.  Anyone have any suggestions to how I go about communicating/online chatting with support to id the problem?  Unsure if it's a hardware connection or not.

Answer:Flex 4-1480 Intermittent Display Problems

Hi sxenakis,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Since it was just two days for its warrnaty maybe you can try calling sales team 1-855-253-6686, option 2 Monday ? Friday 9am-9pm EST and check if post warranty extension can be considered.

Otherwise you may want to call technical support at 877-453-6686 to check if there is anything that they can extend on your behalf. Having an open communication with the tech team may provide you options for consideration. Everything can be worth a try before we start opening or loosening in the panels and screws.

Hope this helps.

I purchased a Flex 3 through the Lenovo site for a black friday special and have been having severe problems with it ever since. I'm really at my wits end with what to do with this machine. Sporatically, my physical keyboard and trackpad will stop working and the issue can't be reset until I let the unit battery drain and die. This is no way to use a laptop. I can not figure out a triggering issue for it, it happens randomly.  I have called the tech support hotline 3 times and tried chat twice and no one has been able to help me resolve this issue. The tech support personnel have been extremely unhelpful and have talked over me when I attempt to explain what is going on, and refused to transfer me to another associate or escalate my issue to a supervisor. I feel like I was sold a defective unit.  What can I do?

Answer:Ongoing issue with Flex 3 1480 Model 80R3

If it helps, when this happens, my fan runs constantly. The air coming out is not hot.

I just purchased the Lenovo Flex 3-1480 yesterday.  So far so good in my initial observation of this 2 in 1 laptop. Except for the wifi. We have the AT&T gigapower speed with the Pace router with 2.4 & 5 ghz wifi dual modes.  I checked with AT&T and they advised that different devices can have different speeds if the hardware or drivers are old or not up-to-date.  AT&T has stated that everyone won't get 1ghz speeds (disclaimer says up to 1ghz).  So, I have another Lenovo 540w laptop that I use for work and it is getting 330 mbps download speeds for the 5ghz wireless and 500+ mbps download when connected with the ethernet cable to the router.I connected the Flex 3 directly to the router with the ethernet cable and tested at speedtest.net and received 320 mbps download speed.I went to speedtest.net and ran a test on the wireless and the best I could get is 30 mpbs download speed.  I noticed that the flex 3 would only connect to 2.4ghz.  When I tried to connect with 5ghz, I received and error that it would not connect.  So I searched on the Lenovo website for updated wifi drivers and found newer drivers.  My current driver was for Intel AC-3165 dual band wireless adapter version 18.12.1.2 date 7/29/2015.  I dowloaded and installed version 19.10.0.9 date 9/28/2016, rebooted and saw some improvement. I was finally able to connect to 5ghz mode and the latest speed test was 89 mbps download speed.    So I started... Read more

Hello,I have had this problem ever since I purchased the laptop.  The screen will go black/blank, but the backlight will still be on.  Can't do anything and have to turn off and restart.  It happens about once an hour or so.  Originally it happened less frequently/more when the power supply was not connected.  Now it happens regardless if the power supply is connected.  I also have text distortion on the screen at times.  I have tried to update display drivers/downgrade drivers, nothing has worked for me.  Really starting to get annoying.  Any suggestions? Thanks, Ginger4

I recently brought a Lenovo Flex 3 1480 model (Windows 10, i7-6500U Processor). Everything worked fine except the Wifi which was extremely slow(2Mbps). The Dowload speed for my other HP laptop that was 20Mpbs!. However when i connected by flex 3 machine to the LAN cable, it was able to give me 20Mbps download speed. I decided to get my laptop replaced. I got my replacement laptop yesterday and it has the same exact Wifi problem.  Troubleshooting steps that I tried:1. Updated the network card drivers2. Uninstalled and reinstalled the atheros driver software Is anybody else facing this issue? Please let me know if there are any solutions for this problem.

Answer:Flex 3 1480 Wifi issue: Extremely slow! Please help

I'm having the same exact issue. I know it is a hardware issue because the problem persists after I reinstalled drivers, and even the OS. I ruled out router issues because my other wireless devices function just fine.

I have a Lenovo Flex 3 1480 with Intel I7.  I was getting a message that says "plugged in charging" but the battery charge was staying at 60% and not increasing. Lenovo techs said the battery must be bad so I ordered and installed a new, Lenovo brand battery.  I get the same condition... placing the cursor over the battery symbol gives a status message of "40% available, plugged in, charging" but the battery charge never increases, even after shutting off the computer down and leaving it plugged in overnight. The laptop was a year old and therefore out of warranty last November, 2016. HELP!

I received a brand new Flex 3-1480 for Christmas and have had several technical issues with it. First, the touch screen only works about half of the time when I turn it on. When I restart the machine, it sometimes fixes the issue, but that's not my main concern. The biggest issue is that it will not wake up from sleep mode. This problem began back in February (6 months ago) and has not been resolved. I called Lenovo support on 6 or 7 different occasions, each answered by a different technician who assigned me new case numbers. They all tried various things (BIOS, hardware, screen brightness, drivers, etc.). These solutions all worked for a few days, maybe a week on occasion before the computer when back to not working properly.  The computer was sent to the repair depot back in April to be fixed. When I got it back, it worked properly for 2 days before reverting to the previous sleep issue. At that point, I called support again, tried more fixes (none of which worked). I got fed up and tired of those solutions at the end of May, when I called and told them I wanted this escalated. I was assigned Crystal as a case manager. She has been absolutely abysmal and non-responsive, but looking at this forum and online I see that she is always like this - I am surprised she still is employed and just goes to show how terrible of a company this really is. This is my first and last Lenovo machine and will recommend people NOT purchase Lenovo when they are looking for produ... Read more

My Flex 14 1480 is a week and a half old when the system update application prompted me to update my BIOS. As i recall it wanted to update my bios from 1.04 to 2.0 I clicked yes, and the bios update ran and initiated a restart of the computer. Unfortuatnply now my computer does not start up and i am greeted to LEDS being on but a black screen without a lenovo logo.  I then tried to go on the Lenovo website and for the bios version that i just installed, there is no 2.0 version listed, specifically 2SCN20WW. There are no bios updates period. Was this update pulled, and if so what can I do to recover it so it boots again.  http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/Laptops-and-netbooks/Flex-Series/flex-4-1480?tabName=Downlo...  thanks

I have a Flex 4 1480 Signature Edition ideapad 80VD0007US and I'm trying to update the BIOS via the System Update utility.  When I choose to install the suggested update for the BIOS I get a message stating that this BIOS is only for "510S14IKB 310S15IKB YOGA 510-14IKB YOGA 510-15IKB" - none of which is my machine I'm pretty sure.  What can one do to find the correct BIOS and update it if the System Update utility doesn't give you the correct one?

The Lenovo Settings utility says that my BIOS is currently: 2SCN23WWV2.03

Thanks for any help!

Answer:Flex 4 1480 - Incorrect BIOS in Lenovo System Update utility

Welcome to the Lenovo Community !

Sorry to hear of the difficulties you are experiencing.  The warning message you are receiving during the update is partially correct.  Your model should have been included in that warning since that BIOS update covers all the models listed.   Here is a full description from the BIOS update's README file....

Flash BIOS update - Flash from Operating System version for ideapad 510S-14IKB, 310S-14IKB, 310S-15IKB, Yoga 510-14IKB, Yoga 510-15IKB, Flex 4-1480, Flex 4-1580Version 2SCN25WW(V2.05)Applicable OS Win10

I would try the upgrade again and click to proceed.  Otherwise here is a direct download link to that BIOS upgrade from the Lenovo Download Library for your model....

I have a Flex 3 that is only 4 months old and notice that even when the laptop is totally off (powered down, no lights on, not hibernate or sleep) after a day or two the batter charge upon bootup has gone down significantly. I am talking a reduction of say 40%. I am under warranty and I have to run this "Battery gauge reset" routine and do a few other checks before they replace the battery.  Although I can't imagine how looking at windows power options can impact what the battery draw is while the unit is OFF and windows is not running....but guess they have to go through their script. Anyway my question is on this Battery Gauge reset.  I have read things where this takes all night or something and people have to turn sleep mode off on their laptop? That is not in the official instructions so for those that have had this issue or run the reset do you just "press the button" or do I need to make sure the laptop stays awake. Also, what is it actually doing?? Is this type of battery drain a known issue?  To me it sure seems like just a bad battery....Thanks,BJBBJB

I have a LeNovo Flex 3 1480 [80R3] for about a year with zero problems. The only modded thing is a Sandisk 480gb SSD drive, with a Windows 10 installation from scratch, installed in the very first day I bought this machine. I was running Windows 10 version 1607 normally, and really enjoying this machine, but since last week when I was booting up, the machine freezed at bootscreen (the one with the lenovo logo) and then restarted showing the message "Preparing Automatic Repair" that took almost a whole day to pass. The repair never happened and I had to use the option to reset windows maintaining my personal files. After this everytime I boot up, windows 10 take up to 10 minutes to boot, and my keyboard and touchpad won't work, leaving me with only the touchscreen option. I've been through a lot of different solutions attempts:- Upgraded BIOS to the latest version (Lenovo colored logo at bootscreen)- Uninstalled KB and Touchpad drivers manually and reinstalled with Lenovo provided drivers, and also repeated the procedure with Windows Update drivers.- Disabled the fast startup option- Done the 15s procedure with the power button- Deattached the battery plug for some minutes and reattached- Checked (unplug and replug) both KB and Touchpad flatwires- Reinstalled the latest Windows 10 version 1703 from scratch None of the solution mentioned above worked for me. KB works perfectly in BIOS, and even when booting up I can change de backlight settings usi... I have 8 Flex 4-1480s, and all of them are showing the same issue. Before the Windows 10 creators update, they were all great. However, after the upgrade to creators, and then confirmed again after fall creators, the SSD speeds have tanked. I have verified this through both hard drive speed tests, and specific applications are orders of magintude slower then other systems with similar specs. The easiest test for this is to download the latest Arduino IDE from the windows store, and compile an empty project. On a fully working system, this should take less then 10 seconds. However, on these systems specifically, this takes about 4 minutes. I can observe the same thing compiling a simple C++ program using Microsoft Visual Studio. I tried contacting support, and the only suggestion from them was to perform a refresh, which we have attempted multiple times, and this does not help. Has anyone else seen this issue, or have a suggested fix? Tried reinstalling from fresh, checking all the page file settings, making sure the hard drive does not shut off, and many other things. During this whole time, task manager shows disk usage as 0.1%, and I've never actually seen it go above that number in all my testing.

I bought my Flex 3 1480 last November, but had to ship it out to get it repaired for a faulty hard drive in early January. When I got it back in late January, it's worked fine up til now when out of the blue it started having problems playing video. If it's set on HD or higher quality, the video will stutter and the audio will not only stutter as well but produce extremely staticky clipping as well. This happens if I'm playing any video anywhere, be it on the internet on any browser on any site or just playing local videos from my hard drive. The audio clipping also occurs when I'm just playing my music on Groove Music. The audio and video clipping mostly happens when a page is loading or if I'm multitasking at the same time they're playing, it's almost as if the computer isn't utilizing all of its RAM, but I'm not sure.

In general, performance has degraded as well. Everything is a bit less snappy than before under situations where a lot of RAM is utilized. Gaming performance (not graphically intensive) takes a hit too, although not to the point where it's unplayable.

Help! Does anybody have this issue, and is there any way to fix it? Does this seem to be a hardware related problem or something I installed? I'd rather not do a factory reset since I just got this thing back from the repair depot and I just loaded all of my stuff back on it.

Hello.I guess neither Lenovo or Intel are going to do anything about it, just hope it may help someone.Bought Flex 2 15 and tried installing a new Intel 530 240gb SSD instead of the HDD - doesn't recognize it at all after reboot; after cold boot it sees the SSD, but everything comes out as zeroes (disk utilities show the drive as if it was not initialized, and any attempts to write to it fail). --- By the way, some tips for those who decide to replace HDD or RAM on these laptops:- It's not very hard, but you have to be patient and careful. HDD and RAM are not CRU, so if you damage anything in the process, the warrany will be void.- Read the HMM first.- I highly recommend to get special tools for opening plastic covers. Don't use metal objects like knives as they are much more likely to damage the plastic.- HMM says "loosen the keyboard with fingers" - it's impossible. Use plastic opening tool to carefully grab the top part of the keyboard. Try not to twist the keyboard too much, only apply the pressure in the places where it's attached.- Removing the back cover is relatively easy, but HMM is also confusing here: remove the screws mentioned on p. 38 *first* before removing all the screws from the back cover and opening it.- Use a spudger to pry open the plastic cover, it actually comes off easily after that. I started with the USB port near the DVD drive compartment.- You don't have to remove the battery screws, just detaching the connector b... Read more

So I was in this website (dashboard.zopim.com) for working purposes and whenever I get a chat request there's a sound and somehow my computer stopped with the sounds. I restarted the computer and there was a mute symbol in the audio, and I got really surprised when I tried to unmute it and got a message like "there is no audio installed" . I went to the system settings and saw that 2 icons - Intel High Definition DSP and Intel High definition display audio had a yellow mark. I went to Lenovo's website and downloaded the driver and it didn't work. Then I found some instructions on microsoft's website. It worked but then I had to use the site again and... Not working! I made it work again but now there's a delay. Sometimes there's no delay on the sound and sometimes there's about 5 sec. Please, help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I did that to my 3 year old z570 (max on the manual says 8 gb.... now it has $50 16 gb ram chips)..... Works flawlessly. It really depends on the ram you have.... is it soldered or is it removable. If removable, I would not wait till the warranty period is over. The USB contains BIOS downloaded from Lenovo https://download.lenovo.com/consumer/mobiles/93cn59ww(v9.9&v3.8).exe I extracted 93cn59ww.fd and used Andy's Phoenix Tool (from mydigitallife website) to find bios filename but Andy's Tool doesn't show what filename I should rename it to on USB.When I power on the laptop all that happens is the white power light comes on. However,If I hold fn+r while turning the laptop on the power light turns red and continues to blink. If I plugin or unplug the power cable the laptop beeps. I'm hopefull I can get this working if I can find out the filename. I've tried naming the file bios.bin, bios.fd, bios.wph, ect but I have had no luck. The original bios was InsydeH20 93cn55ww(v9.5).64bitPlease can anybody help me find the filename I need to rename 93cn59ww.fd to on the USB? My son only upgraded his 830 to Windows 10 on Tuesday, and has had a very negative experience, especially with battery life and text messaging.
Has anyone else had issues, and is there hope for resolution?

Answer:Ssds?

IMO, SSDs have gotten better over the pat two years. The caveat is that given brands and models still vary widely in quality and reliability.

The fact that the Samsung has good user reviews is a plus. Contrast this to the OCZ drive my dad bought about a month ago for his netbook. After two hours of beating his head against a wall trying to install Windows, he finally contacted OCZ tech support who informed him a firmware upgrade was required in order for the drive to work. confused:confused

Whatever you choose, I'd backup your data religiously and keep the old drive loaded with Windows and your software just in case the SSD tanks.

Question: SSDs

SSD's intrigue the hell out of me. i just read this article The SSD Anthology: Understanding SSDs and New Drives from OCZ - AnandTech :: Your Source for Hardware Analysis and News and now im not so sure I want to get one.

i would use it for my OS and programs only, i already have a 1TB drive for data

what are some of the best ssds out today? The intel X-25M sounds nice... but how does it compare to the oCZ vertex 2's and other drives?

have any of the problems from that article been solved now? That article was from march '09

Answer:SSDs

The Intel X25-M's are great drives and the new $120GB for around $240 is a good deal. Aside from those, the Vertex 2's are great and so is just about anything with the new Sandforce controllers.

I think most of the kinks have been worked out now and have experienced no problems whatsoever with my Intel X25 M.

The SSD Anthology: Understanding SSDs and New Drives from OCZ

The Prelude

I spent about three weeks working on my review of Intel?s X25-M SSD. Most of that was research and writing and re-writing to not only review the product but also to talk about the rest of the SSDs in the marketplace and their deficiencies. Truth be told, I spent more time working on SSDs that weren?t the X25-M than the Intel drive itself. The Intel drive just worked as it should, the rest of them didn?t.
If you read the article, you know I was pretty harsh on some of the SSDs out at the time and if you?ve ever used any of those SSDs, you know why. Needless to say, there was some definite fallout from that review. I?m used to negative manufacturer response after a GPU review, but I?m always a bit surprised when it happens in any other segment.
I took a day or two off after that review went live, I think it was a day. Afterwards, I immediately started working on a follow-up. There was a strange phenomenon a few people noticed, something I unfortunately picked up on after the review went live; if you filled the X25-M up and re-benchmarked it, it got slower. And I had no idea why.
A few weeks later, I had it figured out. But then Nehalem was right around the corner. I?d tackle it after that. But then a new batch of SSDs from OCZ and other vendors were almost ready. I told myself I?d do them all at the same time. Then CES happened.

I saw in a post that you can "convert" the 2.5 inch bay into a dual M.2.  Is that true? If so, can it be wired to be PCIe?  Or does it *have* to be SATA?  If so, does it require a cable, a special request, or something?

Question: SSDs Losing MFT?

OK, so on two different Windows 8 machines, that are clean installed probably every 3-4 months or so, I had both SSDs lose their MFT in the same week.

I saw they lose their MFT but that's a guess. Both systems just randomly stopped booting one day. One of them worked fine. I powered it off, and then it wouldn't boot again. I attempted repairs in Command Prompt from a bootable USB and the Windows 8 partitions both showed up as RAW. Since it says RAW, I believe there is little I can do to fix this.

Why is this happening? What can I do to prevent it? For one of the systems, I back up the SSD weekly with an Acronis True Image schedule. So I was able to restore it easily. The other system doesn't have anything that isn't on the cloud so no biggie.

Answer:SSDs Losing MFT?

Google Search found some pages about converting/restoring HDDs from RAW to NTFS, should find help there:

I have 5 drives installed on my PC (1 HDD and 4 SSDs, the rest are just partitions). I am just wondering what does CF means on 2 of the SSDs. Does it stand for "compact flash"? How to fix this? Or should I just leave it alone?

Answer:SSDs detected as CF?

Hi Robot!

I just installed a 240 GB SSD today and have installed Windows 10 on it.

I looked at the Disk Manager and found nothing out of the ordinary . . . well, maybe I did . . . I don't see anything telling me I have an SSD drive!

I think I'm still using the old BIOS, rather than UEFI.

I just bought a new ultrabook...an HP Envy 4t. I'm looking for a thin 7mm SSD to put in it, and I've narrowed my choices down to 2. I understand one comes with a data transfer kit and one doesn't, and there's a slight difference in capacity. That being said, and "stated drive performance numbers" taken with a grain of salt, which drive would you go with? Hibernation is very bad for SSD life expectancy so I'm a bit alarmed after cloning my laptop's 8.1 from HDD to SSD to find that hiberfil.sys is in use, 2.5GB of data uselessly being written to my new SSD every session. I've reviewed all the advanced power settings and nowhere is the hibernation option selected. I've also tried deleting hiberfil.sys with a boot disk (Windows won't let me delete it), but it's recreated at next boot. Fastboot is also turned off.

ATM I'm thinking I had better remove the SSD and reinstate the HDD until I can find an answer to this problem and in the meantime I'm not shutting it down.

Anyone?

Question: Hybrid Ssds

I'm considering replacing the 7200 RPM HDDs in my Dell Latitude E6400 with either SSDs or Hybrid SSDs (I may eventually replace my USB enclosure HDDs as well).

Any thoughts on which I should use? Brand(s)? Reliability?

I found Seagate hybrids on Amazon in the capacities I want (1 TB, 500 GB) at reasonable prices if bought used but, I'd like more information so I can make a better informed decision.

Thanks.

Answer:Hybrid Ssds

Hi mdonah

I would normally say out of the box, go SSD and the Samsung 840/850s have been reliable for me, however the cost difference is quite a bit from $100-+/- for a Seagate SSHD to a Samsung Evo 850 (1TB) at $282 +/- so the cost per MB is excessive for what is a 6+yr old laptop. SSDs while great they start getting expensive over 500GB and if you only have 1 drive slot then you really need storage over speed, if a desktop then you could get away with a smaller SSD then have either 1TB+ HDD/SSHD as storage.

When I was looking at the same idea of SSHD I did a bit of looking at reviews and some video tests on youtube as to real world setup and boot and reboot and the difference between SSHD and SSD was not that much but I guess this could also be reliant on what solid state cache the drive has as they are generally 8/32/64MB so the 32/64MB would be the ideal one on a 1TB drive, I could also see that even 8GB SSD cache could take some of the heavy lifting of data and speed up your laptop.

I know makers are Seagate, Toshiba and Western Digital from who I can remember, I likely would opt for Seagate as they are the makers from the outset that didn't go down the pure SSD development route (do have some enterprise ones though) but stuck developing SSHD, so they have alot of experience with these drives IMHO.

So I'm planning on buying a solid state drive for my OS and main non-game program files: Planning on buying SSD for OS - require advise on fresh-installs etc.

I'm pretty confident that I can do alright with that, but I want to make sure that my SSD lasts as long as possible while maintaining decent performance.

I came across this in a review on the SSD I want to buy: Corsair Force 3 120GB SSD review

I understand it is telling me to disable a few things in order to keep the SSD performing well.

I am also worried about things such as power loss. Where I live, power cuts are rare, but they do happen maybe twice or three times a year. I understand about getting a UPS but I don't know much about them and they are surprisingly hard to find. My PSU is a 750W one (which doesn't normally consume that much if you look at what is in my system).

So before I ask for a list of how to maintain SSDs, I have a few worries or unknowns in my head that I'd like busted. Does that make sense? :P

1. I read someone about SSD's continuing to consume power when the system is powered down? If true, what happens if you unplug the PC from the wall? Or remove the motherboard battery? Maybe I'm just paranoid but I'd love to know.

2. If there is a power cut and my SSD is not writing anything, will be fine?
2.1 If there is a power cut and my SSD is writing, is it likely to corrupt everything?

Answer:I need some reassuring on SSDs

im going to put this simple BUY ONE NOW!! NO WAIT GET 2!!

i have a corsair force 3 120gb in my gaming rig and its been amazing. I have done nothing special or changed any settings other than from IDE to AHCI in the Bios.

The failure rate of an SSD is a lot lower than a mechanical drive as there isnt any moving parts, and the life expectancy of an SSD is like 30years of nonstop use lol.

I cant see how an SSD can consume power on an off computer as there is no power being sent along the 12v rails, when its off its off. It doesnt need power to keep its memory, its just like a giant flash stick.

As for a power cut.. id worry about that if and when, i cant see it having any worse effect on a computer with a normal hard drive or an SSD.

If you buy a smaller SSD (60gb) you can enable fast cache, in conjunction with another larger mechanical drive, allowing the instand speed of an ssd but with the size of a larger drive, however it wont be as fast, and if on fails i think both set of data will be lost (might be wring on that)

i have only an SSD in my gaming rig, and im soon to add another, im that impressed id rather buy 2-3 SSD than add on mechanical drive.

and i think your paranoid. seek help in the form of retail therapy and get your butt on ebuyer and order an SSD!

Question: SSDs in RAID 0?

I bought a 2.5" 50gb SSD earlier this year (just before they became popular ) - at the time it was top of the line for 2.5 inchers.

Unfortunately I am almost out of space on the SSD, and I'm considering buying another identical one and setting it up in RAID 0. I like the security of RAID, but my previous setup I had two and a half years ago was a headache when things went wrong - it was a six 400gb RAID 0, and I had to replace THREE of the drives over the course of the 2.5 years. Western Digital replaced them under warranty... makes me wonder if they lost all of their profits from the six drives I bought after giving me three more...

Anyways, the biggest question is whether I will actually get doubled speed on RAID 0. I'm currently getting about 350mb/s read and write on my SSD. A couple months ago, I had to replace my motherboard with an ASUS (I believe it is a P6T - I physically broke my previous 680i ) - although I have not run RAID on this board, the RAID on my previous 680i was NOT double the speed. I was only getting about 170mb/s on SIX 400gb drives in RAID 0. Individually they earned 79mb/s. Funny thing is, when I ran them as externals in Windows RAID (via disk management with the SSD as C:\ - the six drives were non bootable) I was running exactly six times the speed.

I am interested in some of the higher end SSDs, however I do not want to run PCI-e storage, and the 3.5" disks are in the same performance ring as what I already have. I will be... Read more

I have read that defragging a solid state drive (SSD) is a very BAD idea, and will not only slow down the access speeds, but could potentially cause data loss or drive damage. I have also read that "Defragger Brand X" is optimized for use with SSDs, which kind of negates the thought that defragging a sold state drive is not a good idea. So what's up? Is defragging really a bad idea for a solid state drive? If so, why?

Answer:Another question about SSDs

Defragging an SSD is a very bad idea, it will accelerate it's death.

Buy an SSD that supports the 'Trim' command, or at least, has some Garbage Collection firmware builtin.

SSD's access data so much faster than HDD's that defragging is pointless; SSD's have a limited 'write' cycle.

Question: SSDs in RAID 0

I'm thinking about setting up some SSD's in RAID 0 and I had a few questions.

So am I to understand that if a Crucial M4 reads at 415 MB/s that if you RAID them that it would theoretically equal 830 MB/s? Or are there safeguards put in place where you can't just put ten of them in RAID 0 and have the drives reading at a blazing 4.15 GB/s?

Also how is TRIM support for RAID 0? Would I have any issues there? Another thing I wanted to ask was what are the advantages of running RAID off a PCI-e card versus running it through your motherboard's onboard SATA ports?

Thanks.

Answer:SSDs in RAID 0

1. you cannot just add it up. You loose some in the raid control - about 10%.
2. there is no Trim in Raid0
3. if you think that will speed up your OS, it is not going to happen. For the OS the R/W speed is pretty irrelevant. It is the access time that counts and that is the same in Raid or single SSD.
4. PCI-4x has a throughput of 10Gb/sec versus 3 or 6Gb/sec for the Sata ports.
5. A 10-fold Raid will be limited by the max. capability of the ports - about 300 or 600MB/sec for Sata.

Question: ComboFix and SSDs

Hello,

I'm not sure if this is the right place but I have a Dell Mobile Precision M4500 and was wondering if ComboFix can be used on Windows 7 Professional 64bit located on a Samsung PM800 64GB SSD. I also have a 500GB Toshiba HDD built in as a storage drive. Both are non-RAID.

Does ComboFix work if the OS drive is an SSD? Any issues unique to using ComboFix on SSDs?

Thanks

Answer:ComboFix and SSDs

Hi GWT1,Welcome to BleepingComputer! As a general policy, Bleeping Computer does not offer advice on how to run ComboFix unless we asked someone to run it or if there is a problem with the computer caused by running the tool. This is because people should not be using ComboFix without being advised to do so by a trained expert (i.e. Malware Response Team) who is assisting a member deal a malware issue on that system. When issues arise due to complex malware infections, possible false detections, problems running ComboFix or with other security tools causing conflicts, experts are usually aware of them and can advise what should or should not be done while providing individual assistance. When false detections are identified, experts have access to the developer and can report them so he can investigate, confirm and make corrections. Those attempting to use ComboFix on their own do not have such information and are at risk when running the tool in an unsupervised environment. Further, using ComboFix is only one part of the disinfection process. Preliminary scans from other tools like DDS, RSIT and GMER should be used first because they provide comprehensive logs with specific details about files, folders and registry keys which may have been modified by malware infection. Analysis of those logs allows planning an strategy for effective disinfection and a determination if using ComboFix is necessary. ComboFix was never meant to be used as a general purpose... I'm SSD illiterate. I want to swap over my cdrive on my win7 64 desktop PC to an SSD. Are they all alike? Is there a 'quality' brand etc?

Answer:Are all SSDs alike?

Like all things there are good ones & not so good ones. Generally speaking you get what you pay for, so a cheap one will probably be less reliable in the long term.

Samsung are probably amongst the best, so shop around for the best price. Big Gb capacity SSD's are still very expensive, but you can get some reasonable prices on 128 & 256 Gb ones.

My P50 is on the way, and I got it with the 2.5" 256GB SSD. I also have ordered the Mobile Workstation Storage Kit needed to add hard drives.  I have gone on sites like Best Buy looking for SSDs, and the drive interfaces they have there are: SATA, Other, Mini-SATA, USB 3.0 and Serial ATA. I'm also confused about the NVMe vs PCIe vs M2. What are the exact specifications of any M2 SSD that will work with the P50? Both in terms of the things above, and also physical size. Also, would this one work?

I've been in the habit of going into the "defragment and optimize drives" menu and noticing that it will say something like "20 days since last run" even though it's scheduled for weekly.. Not sure why.. so I always click "optimize" and do it manually for both "Windows (C: )" and "Recovery Image" (both are SSD). The other two things in the list say "never run" and "needs optimization" but nothing happens when I click optimize. Anyway, I just came upon a blog post that says you're not supposed to optimize SSDs and this shortens their lifespan. So is what I've been doing bad? Should I stop doing this?

Answer:Optimizing SSDs is bad?

Yes.. you don't need to optimize or defrag an SSD. The extra writes that are performed can shorten the life of the SSD.

Question: SSDs in Thinkpads

I can't seem to find much information on the SSDs being used. All I know is that Lenovo uses Samsung drives and most likely they are SLCs. Is that true? On the web I cannot find any reviews on the Samsung 128gb drives, only on the 64gb SLCs. Can I assume that the 128gb drives perform better than these early drives? How do the lenovo SSDs compare to the Intel X25-M? Would it be wiser to order without SSD and buy one of these on the internet? I could live with the capacity and on ebay they go for $400 bucks.

Hello All,   I just order a P50 workstation with a single SSD (225Gb) option with Windows Pro.  I will be ordering a Samsung EVO SSD and M.2 dock to mount the Samsung drive in the laptop.  I would like to keep windows on the factory SSD and install a few different Linux OSs on the Samsung drive.  What would be the recommended way to choose which OS boots when I start the computer?  Is this possible?  Currently I have a desktop and I just remove the drive with the OS I don't want to run.  Is the scenario I portaryed possible with two seperate harddrives running multiple SSDs? Thanks!Popsickle

The following are my views based on my own research. Sensible comments and discussion are welcomed.

The truth about SSDs
Pros
•Increased start up speed
•Increased application/game launching
•File fragmentation is negligible
•Consistent read rates
•Silent
•Lower power consumption and heat
•Increased reliability
•Small size and weight
•Less prone to failures (due to lack of moving parts)

Cons
•Expensive dollar per gigabyte
•Lower storage capacity (for now at least)

Random Read Rates:
SSDs outperform HDDs in this area by a wide margin (up to 100x faster than a typical HDD)

Sequential Read Rates:
SSDs can read sequentially at an average of around 200MB/s (almost twice as fast as most HDDs)

Random Writes & Flushes:
These rates, although generally much slower than read rates, are hardly noticeable in real world performance. (I recommend this article for more info)

Performance Degradation:
In Windows 7, if an SSD reports it supports TRIM, the file system can erase the relevant blocks without having to mix data that are subsequently written to that block which, in turn, reduces wear. Trim is also integrated with partition- and volume-level commands, truncating and compression, and with System Restore.

FAQs

Answer:The Truth About SSDs

Nice summary. I would add "less heat" to the pros. That is one reason I will put an SSD into one of my laptops that runs very hot. And here is an extract to support your last point (since this is always subject of lengthy debates):

Should the pagefile be placed on SSDs?
Yes. Most pagefile operations are small random reads or larger sequential writes, both of which are types of operations that SSDs handle well.

In looking at telemetry data from thousands of traces and focusing on pagefile reads and writes, we find thatPagefile.sys reads outnumber pagefile.sys writes by about 40 to 1,
Pagefile.sys read sizes are typically quite small, with 67% less than or equal to 4 KB, and 88% less than 16 KB.
Pagefile.sys writes are relatively large, with 62% greater than or equal to 128 KB and 45% being exactly 1 MB in size.
In fact, given typical pagefile reference patterns and the favorable performance characteristics SSDs have on those patterns, there are few files better than the pagefile to place on an SSD.

Question: SSDs in RAID 0

I have a 120gb and and another 128gb and, One made my Samsung and another made by SanDisk and I was wondering if it would be possible to run them in a raid 0

thanks in advance

Answer:SSDs in RAID 0

It would probably be possible (depending on the controller) to combine these drives in RAID 0 but not normally recommended. RAID 0 works best with matched drives. Only 120 GB on the larger drive could be used.

RAID 0 improves performance by increasing transfer rate. In theory this would be near double but even benchmarks do not reach that. But modern SSDs already have a transfer rate such that they do not materially limit performance.

RAID 0 makes things more complicated and has a number of other serious downsides. One being that if one drive fails you loose everything. Backups are always important but even more so with RAID 0.

In this case you would have all the disadvantages of RAID 0 with little performance gain.

Better to use one drive for the OS and the other for important applications.
