Boot device not found Hard Disk 3F0

Question: Boot device not found Hard Disk 3F0

My initial problem was that the notebook wouldn't charge when switched on. I downloaded HP Support Assistant to try and analyse the battery status but when restarting, the display shows Boot Device Not Found. Have tried performing a hard reset but it has had no effect.Error code is 60APTG-73588K-MFGH61-60EB03

Preferred Solution: Boot device not found Hard Disk 3F0

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer:boot device not found hard disk 3f0 hp

Hello Silkaline, Welcome to the forum! Have you tried searching for the HDD in the Boot menu of the BIOS? If not, please do so by verifying the the hard drive is at the first priority boot device. If, by any chance it is not, you have tomanually set it on the first place. If you cannot see the drive listed as an available device, it probably has failed, but still you have to chech if that's the case. Open the laptop, if it's out of warranty and take out the drive to connect it on another place. You can use a SATA-USB adaptor. Good luck!

My laptop is hp Intel Centrino Wireless-N 2230, model: 2230BNHMW; Product nb: A3F49AAR and model: dv6t. In fact since I have upgraded windows 10 the last May, I am facing a lot of problems with my laptop. Knowing that I have called the hp center and they told me that it is a global problem with most hp users with windows 10. But the problem is that suddenly I got this message when starting up : Boot device not found please install an operating system on your hard disk hard disk (3F0) knowing that the laptop was turning to be very warm with an odor.I tried several solutions, finally loading the BIOS setup default settings was the only solution that worked. My question is that what could I do to ensure that my laptop will not show me this problem again or in another way could I avoid such a problem in the future?

Hello HP community,I have a HP 15-af137nr and I've been trying to get it to boot into a OS multiple times but it just won't boot. I tried Linux and Windows 10. They both work but after a reboot or two, it throws it right back at the same error screen. I've tried with a Hard drive and a SD card. Hard drive would boot but after a reboot, it goes right back to the error screen. Both OSes work flawlessly till a reboot. I've tried setting BIOS back to default settings, I've tried multiple hard drives and SD cards. The only thing that it will boot successfully to with no issues are USB devices. This all didn't happen until a month after my sister spilled apple juice and left it on for multiple nights, the hard drive that was orignally in there, died out. I put my own in there and it booted fine for about a week or two. That's when I started to recieve constant errors stating that my Boot device wasn't found even though my desktop could find it immediately. Would be glad if someone were to help ASAP.

Answer:"Boot Device Not Found, Hard Disk (3F0)

The only logical conclusion is that the spill damaged the motherboard. It can often be delayed as the liquid attracts dust that finally makes an electrical short. Sorry. Post back if you want more help.

Answer:boot device not found hard disk (3f0)

Hi,            Remove the Hard disk drive and then check if the Hard disk drive is detected in BIOS or not. If the HDD is detected, then run a test as mentioned in the below link http://support.hp.com/us-en/product/HP-Pavilion-g6-Notebook-PC-series/5330578/model/5354728/document... If the test passes, then you have to reinstall the OS and if the test fails, you have to replace the HDD and then reinstall the operating system. You can download the manual from the below link to know how to remove HDD http://support.hp.com/us-en/product/HP-Pavilion-g6-Notebook-PC-series/5330578/model/5354728/manuals

Hi,Many times this problem occurs when the hard drive has failed or is failing. However, it could also be a corrupted boot sector. To enable legacy mode and disable secure boot try crating a supervisor password in the Bios, you can disable the password later when you have changed the wanted settings (important, do not forget or loose the password). Now try going into recovery mode "Recovery when Windows 10 does not start correctly" https://support.hp.com/hk-en/document/c04758961 Try to perform a startup repair. Let me know if you need further help,David

Answer:Elitebook 8470P - Boot device not found - Hard Disk - (3F0) ...

Is your EliteBook 8470p notebook still in warranty?Check your warranty status Here.  It is indeed unusual for  an SSD to fail so quickly.Did you happen to have a habit of defragging your disk? That would cause a failure of the SSD. The SSD can be replaced without any cost if the warranty coverage is still in effect. Otherwise, it is time to purchase a SATA 2.5" format SSD, perthaps a Samsung 840 or 850EVO. and replace the failed SSSD with it. Once you have replaced the disk iit is time to use your recovery media to reinstall the operating system

Something fell on my keyboard and I got a black screen with this error. (Typing this on my tablet.) I do hear the hard drive soon. I'm on vacation so I don't have any OS disks. I have done everything the Support Assistant, forum posts, and other forms say to do.  1) Hard reset. After I did this, the laptop gives 20 rapid, low volume beeps whenever I turn power on. 2) Reset BIOS defaults. 3) Reseat hard drive twice.  (Now the one screw is stripped.)4) Looked under Boot Device Options.  Nothing there. 5) Tried hard drive check under UEFI. Both types say NOT INSTALLED. 6) Tried to go into HP Recovery Assistance (F11) but wouldn't come up. I get the Boot Device error again.  I also called Support - I can't believe how hard they make that - but they asked they were no help. I hope someone here can help.  I have work I have to get done. TIA!

So my problem is that now when I first start up my laptop, it starts up saying exactly:

"Hard Disk Error

Please run the Hard Disk Test in System Diagnostics.

Hard Disk 1 (3F1)

F2 System Diagnostics

For more information, please visit: www.hp.com/go/techcenter/startup"

I press F2 and everything works the same and I run though each test, doing the Hard Drive Check first. Firstly, I do a Quick Check and then it says:
"Testing Drive: 1
SMART Check : NOT AVAILABLE
Short DST : NOT AVAILABLE"Then goes to list another FMI (For more information) webside by HP. (If you hadn't guessed yet, my laptop is an HP. It also runs Windows 8 and I hadn't had the chance to upgrade to windows 10, although I have it downloaded. The model number is15-f111dx.) Anyways, I go back to the main menu then exit. and then it shows:

"Boot Device Not Found

Please install an operating system on your hard disk.

Hard Disk - (3F0)

F2 System Diagnostics

For more information, please visit: www.hp.com/go/techcenter/startup"

Then at that point I go back to System diagnostics and try the memory test, which then it says it'll take over half an hour. When it finishes, it shows it passed, so that's pretty much the only good thing that is going on. When I exit again, it shows the same thing as the last time, Boot Device Not Found.

Onto what I did that caused this;

I have a Dell XPS 15z laptop, spec. is i7-2640 processor, 8GB memory, 750GB hard drive. The problem is that it often freezes and when restarted it suggests no hard drive, "No boot device found". If I go into the BIOS there is no hard drive, if I boot into the diagnostics screen (F12) and run thr tests on the hard drive it comes up as passed, if I then restart the laptop it will boot into windows 7 Ultimate.
Evertime it freezes it won't boot after a restart unless I run diagnostics then it will start OK.
My thoughts are that it is hard drive, although all tests I have carried out on it suggest its OK, one of the times it booted into windows I ran the Seagate seatools and it was fine.
Anyone any suggestions as to the cause?

Sorry, message at start is "A disk read error occurred", not sure if that makes any difference to your thoughts.
I reformatted and reloaded the software to see if that made any difference but the problem still persists.

Hi,
My friend's laptop (Acer Aspire One 722 - Windows 7 x64) has been shut down after opening an email and Windows never started up again. When you attempt to start up the windows, it stays the black screen and says "No bootable Device Found"!

1- I inserted Windows Live Disk and loaded it (Windows XP Mini - Golden Edition). When I went to "My Computer", it did not show any local drive. I went to "Disk Management" and in there, there was also no unallocated or allocated space.

2- I even removed the HDD and plugged it back in. No thing happened. Then I removed the RAM card and inserted it back. Again, nothing happened! By the way, HDD had movements when laptop was on (I had removed the beneath panel).

3- I inserted Windows 7 Disk to install a fresh Windows 7. But when you get to the part where it asks you to choose the partition to install the operating Sustem, it shows one unallocated drive with 0 (Zero) capacity! The options to Delete and format are disable. Only the option "New" is active and it gives you (0) bite to partition!

What has happened? What should I check/do next?

Hi. I have formatted my hard drive and installed windows XP pro (SP3) on it. It got installed well. However, once I take out the OS cd after completion and restart the system for any reason, the system stays blank for long with a blinking cursor on top left corner and then after couple of minutes goes on to show the above error.

This doesnt happen when I keep the OS cd in the optical drive and then start the system as it goes on to show the "press any key to boot from cd..." thing and then load the OS normally. What could be the reason for this and how can I get my system to boot without the OS cd in it everytime (without having to format it again). Please help.

Answer:NO BOOTABLE DEVICE FOUND: Insert boot disk and press any key

Try a Repair Installation.

Try this.

This can be a number of reasons:

1: Your HDD has had it and needs replacing
2: It is trying to boot from another source, i.e. printer with memory card slots
3: A Memory card / usb stick which is in your PC.

It can be a number of things

First thing I always tell customers to do is:

1: Check in BIOS and make sure the HDD IS detected
2: Make sure the boot order seems OK, make sure the HDD is set to first boot device as a simple check.
3: Make sure no peripherals are pluggged in, i.e. printer (to rule out any 3rd booting options)

If everything seems OK, then that's when we'd try a system recovery, stick in the recovery CD / XP CD depending on the OS and recovery method.

If it boots into the recovery and we can do chkdsk /r - If that comes back OK, try and run the complete restore.
If it goes through OK and in to Windows then problem sorted just a software issue.

If it goes through OK but then comes up with the same issue, could be a fault with the HDD / Mobo (Not recognising a HDD is detected properly)

Hi all
wonder if anyone can help me, i turned on my hp pavilion laptop yesterday and was welcomed with this message ...

Boot device not found
please install an operating system on your hard disk.
Hard Disk-(3F0)

i've tried a few things i've found on internet, like changing legacy support to enabled from disabled in bios.
That didn't work.
tried system diagnostics fix..no luck
checked the hard drive cable but all solid and still the same.

I don't think the hard drive is shot because if i hit esc at startup go into boot options and select boot from laptop hard drive,
it then restarts and says please insert bootable disc..i've tried that and windows starts up only as far as the green line at the bottom then that disapears and i have a black screen with a pointer and that's it.
i have tried to repair the master boot record buy installing win 8 onto a usb and then booting from that, the hp logo appears and the spinning circle underneath appears then the screen goes black and thats it, i have left it for half an hour but nothing seems to be happening.
any ideas would be great.
cheers.

Answer:Boot device not found..hard disc-(3F0)

this issue is broad and not guaranteed to be resolved but as mentioned, whether a new hard drive is required is unknown as some folks have reported, marking the partition active where Windows 8+ is installed which has helped. but each pc is different

a few pointers from this point. even after fresh reinstalls the symptoms recur, which directs the issue towards a hardware problem. if it was under warranty its a good case for replacement.

it remains, (the question) is if the BIOS can't handle any HDD/SSD or is there a specific type/brand that does work with the BIOS/laptop? its unknown.. but when a neighbour installed SSD (OCZ series 4 Agility) as boot device in my PC (with an ASUS motherboard) the problem did not occur.

also going into bios and exiting again to continue with boot had worked but the issue returned again. it might help someone

the bios not to recognise a hdd could be due to seeing if HP.com has the latest BIOS update for your machine and try again. see if anything helps

Answer:Boot Device Not Found; Hard Disc 3F0

Ryan, welcome to the forum. The error message that you are receiving is telling you that the hard drive (HDD) has failed or is failing.  Since the computer won't boot it has most likely failed.  If you don't have a backup of your personal data you won't be able to retreive it without a lot of expense.  You can run the SMART test from the BIOS to see what it has to say.  If you replace the HDD you should buy one that is the same size or larger than the one being replaced.  This will assure that the Recovery media will work. Please click the Thumbs up + button if I have helped you and click Accept as Solution if your problem is solved.

I am writing here, asking for help, because I need to format my computer, there is nothing much useful on it, my parents put a big big load of viruses and there are so many that it would just take less time to format instead of getting rid of all them including other malwares.

The problem is that I cannot boot on any other device than my hard disk ! I have set my BIOS properly, I have tried to boot on a CD and a USB device, but it just stays maybe one minute with a white _ flashing, and then it boots normally.

I cannot get into safe mode either. I have never flashed my Bios, I don't understand what is going on. It used to be F8 to get into it and now it only gives me a boot menu for the boot device, I have tried all other keys but only F8 works.

I did reset my CMOS, and I still have the same problem. My BIOS is set properly, I can't find what's the problem at all. My last resort would have been to use floppy disks, but I don't have the material on my computer to do so.

Please, anyone help me, I'd really like my computer back, I can't find anyone else with my problem, everybody just didn't set their BIOS properly, unlike me...

Answer:No Boot device & no hard disk

If you have no hard disk, you can use an OS, such as Linux, that works right off a bootable CD-ROM.Get such an bootable Linux CD disk and boot to it. You can do anything with it and save your work to a removable media.CoolGuy

I have a HP DV6600 with a fresh HP factory install of Vista SP1. Newest Bios update, and virus free. When I boot up i see the HP screen with boot options down across the bottom(F2, F9, F10 etc) then it goes to a black screen with a blinking cursor in upper left corner. The hard drive lcd does not blink at all. If I reboot and press F9 to select boot options that menu comes up. The only option there is Internal Hard disk or Enter Setup. If I select Internal Hard disk it will boot every time and run great from there on out, untill I go to restart it again. Any suggestions?

Sounds like your hard drive...is not your first boot device...it should be.

Ok first off I want to say I've searched and searched and searched to no avail in trying to find a solution to this I've come to the conclusion it's software and not hardware based. Let me start from the top.

I've had an older computer (HP Pavilion a408x) out of commission for a while due to a 'sploded psu. I finally get around to ordering one, install it and everything is good. I bring it back to my office and hook it up to the internet and as expected there's updates. So I up date it and after the updates are installed the computer restarts automatically (weird yes) and as it's coming back on it detects errors and runs CHKDSK. So I let it run and it gets to part 2 of 3. At this point in time my partner is really needing to print sometime and all computers print through this computer. So after about 45 minutes CHKDSK is still on part 2 at only 15%. So I'm like "screw it" and manually shut down and restart. It's at this point I get a "primary master hard disk failure" at the boot screen. Letting start up continue I get a "Stop : c000021 unknown hard error \systemroot \system 32 \ntdll.dll" At this point I realize something is delectably wrong.

Found this thread, which didn't help much. At some point the c000021 error stops and I start getting "disk boot failure insert system disk and press enter" and I found this thread, which didn't help much either. I have also been searching other sites as well.

Here's what I found ou... Read more

Answer:Hard Drive not found "disk boot failure insert system disk and press enter"

Anything would be super helpful, even if it's bad news. I just need to know if I can get this remedied or not.

Another thing I noticed is that the HDD activity light on the front of the computer does not blink or show any activity.

Thanks!

Okkk. So I've searched pretty much everywhere and I can't figure out what to do if my laptop doesn't recognize my hard drive. I put the Vista disk in and the only thing I'm able to use is the command prompt because none of the others work since it doesn't recognize hard disk. When i try to do chkdsk/r it says
''the type of the file system is NTFS.
cannot lock current drive.
Windows cannot run disk checking on this volume because it is write protected.''
Is there any way to get past this?
Or some way to get my computer to recognize the drivers?
thanks in advance.

Hdwr: Dell Dimension 8200, WinXP Pro.
System failed with no warning or performance problems.
Can't recall a single warning sign.
Current situation: Can't get past BIOS setup. Drives are not recognized.
an't access CD Rom drive or Hard Drive so I can't use solutions that are CD based.
Attempted fixes:
- battery tested ok, but I replaced it anyway
-downloaded MS XP boot disk. It renamed the CD drive R: and I could read CD's, but it is in Win98 format (dos) and "could not create swap files" to access I386 files
- tried floppy boot with selected I386 files... no good.
- tried switching boot order.
- tried unplugging ribbon cables and power cables
-tried holding "on" button for 30 sec. to "reset"
The hard drive is spinning and the light is on
The CD drive starts, as if in auto run mode, but then stops without reading boot files
The CD drive will run from the Microsoft XP boot floppy, so the drive is ok
Someone a lot smarter than I must have the solution. (No, I don't want to buy a new box right now).
Thx.
Ed

Answer:?WinXP Pro: boot error "Primary hard disk drive not found"

Hi, Ed from San Diego,

A couple of things that might help.
You say "The CD drive starts, as if in auto run mode, but then stops without reading boot files. The CD drive will run from the Microsoft XP boot floppy, so the drive is ok.". This ain't necessarily so !  Just because the drive is spinning it doesn't mean it is reading. Can you borrow a drive and swap it for your own ?
It's not holding in the 'On' button for 30 seconds that resets it, it is turning the power off from the computer for 30+ seconds that does this. You can turn it off either at the wall or at the switch on the back of the computer's power supply, both have the same effect.

I will admit that I am as much in the dark as you are about what has caused your problem. I have had computers crash and / or just stop running for a number of reasons over the years, but never a time when the BIOS refused to recognise drives. I do have the situation on my own computer, where I have three HDDs two of which are the same model, and the BIOS occasionally has got confused about which is which. All this results in is a message at boot time 'No operating system found'. And all this entails is going into the BIOS and swapping the drive order around.

Best of luck,

Chris Cosgrove

I have been scouring Google for the last couple days looking for this, but I can not find a thing. I have a Dell Optiplex GX150 PIII 1 GHz, running windows 2000. I had a 20GB drive with my OS, and a 60GB drive for storage. Recently I upgraded to a 120GB drive for the OS, and kept the 60GB drive for storage. I had to re-install Windows 2000 on the 120GB drive, and everything worked fine.

The next day, I started up the computer and I got the message "Primary hard disk drive 1 not found", and the drive was missing in windows. Ok...so I restart and get into the BIOS settings, and the drive is there, and all settings look ok (it's on AUTO, so it's picking it up). I exited and continued to boot up. No error message, and the drive showed up in windows. I thought the problem was solved, but then it happened again the next day. As far as I can tell, if the computer is powered off for more than a couple hours, the drive is not found, but will be found on a immediate restart every time without fail. Windows boots up just fine, but that drive is always missing unless I restart. I’ve done this kind of stuff before, and I know the jumper settings on the drives are ok. Any ideas?

I have an old Western Digital drive that came with Dell Inspiron One 2305 and replaced it after 5 years. There are some files I need from it now and I'm trying to connect via usb to sata. The WD volume does not show up. I got to device manager and found it listed in in unknown devices and it needs a driver to install. Where do I go to find the driver. Western digital site basically said that I need to go to the manufactures webstie (dell) for the driver but once im on dell i see nothing that hints at a Western Digital Driver. Here is the Wester Digital info from there site

Background: clone the entire contents of the HDD to a SSD with the aim to replace the HDD, including the OS.

After having cloned a HDD with Windows 7 laptop to a SDD successfully, and replaced the HDD with the SDD, resulted in a smooth boot exactly the the same procedure failed with a 2007 laptop Vista 32bit.

Procedure with support of the guidelines of the SSD Vendor (Sandisk):
1. Initialize SSD
2. Clone the entire HDD to the SSD
3. Replace the HDD with the SSD
4. Start the laptop.
5a. Result with a Win 7 laptop: OK
5b. Result with a Vista 32bit laptop: failed

Failure with Vista (I'm not that technical):

The BIOS indicates: no IDE device found.
When starting up, the message 'Operation System not found' appears

A major difference between the Win 7 and Vista laptop is the transfer mode of the (former) HDD and the new SSD: Win 7 had a SATA 300 installed, while the Vista has a SATA 150. The SSD is SATA 600.

What I did?
1) I created a ISO Vista 32bit file to get the laptop into the repair mode. This repair mode does not recognize a drive c: (checking out with the installed DOS).
So, i'm turning in circles. There is no way to get the internal SSD recognized.

2) When connecting the new SSD drive with USB to check the SSD status with the Computer Management/Disk Management tool, this is displayed:
The internal HDD (containing the system) shows: Healty (Boot, Page File, Crash Dump, Primary Partition). The USB connected SSD shows: Healty (Active, Primary Partition). Further, the ... Read more

My computer completely locked up while playing a game and I had to do a hard reboot. Now I continuously get the error:

"Reboot and select proper Boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key"

The only thing I can manage to pull up is the CMOS Setup Utility. Looking through the menu I found the Boot sequence menu; however, the only device listed is cd/dvd and I read that hard drive should be listed.

Any ideas on a possible problem?

I am thinking that my hard drive might be shot because I am almost positive it is not due to loose cables. On the other hand I was thinking that it could possibly be due to a virus because I had found a Trojan earlier with my virus scanner.

Appreciate any feedback I can get.

Hi all,

I am attempting to install Win7 in an Inspiron 1545 with a new SATA hard drive that was purchased. When i insert the drive, I get "Internal Hard Disk Drive Not Found." I have verified the drive is not showing in the BIOS, I've already attempted to reseat the drive several times. In addition, I've attempted to load the chipset drivers, SATA drivers, etc from Dells website, the drive still does not show in the OS install when booting to DVD or in bios.
I dont believe it to be an issue with the new drive, as I plugged the new drive into another model Dell laptop and it recognizes the drive fine in BIOS, also I can still boot to the previous hard drive in this laptop without issue when i plug it back in.
Is there a specific driver, etc that I need to use for the drive to be recognized or other thoughts people have?

Answer:Inspiron 1545- replacing hard drive, new SATA drive not found "Internal Hard Disk Drive Not Found

This is strange - either the new hard drive has a rare compatibility issue with your onboard controller (I use a 500Gbyte in my 1545 without probs)) or it is a mechanical problem.I would take a close look at the physical dimensions and compare your original hdd with the new one.Watch the video (even though it's about a 1525 (similar to an 1545) and an SSD hdd) -  go to 2:20

Answer:No bootable device found-please enter a new boot device

Try, removing the battery, unplug the device and holding the Power button down for at least 30 seconds. Re install the hard drive, making sure of proper connection. Replace battery and Power plug, go into bios and set optimized defaults. Then see if the hard drive is recognized. Try to listen and see if the hard drive is spinning up.

My company's computer needs to be patitioned and reformat. The system is still working well. I mean, nothing wrong with anything (weird huh?). Ok the hard disk just need to be 'split'. I mean, make drive C & D on the hard disk. I know how to do that... easy... Then the HD need to be formatted & reinstall windows XP. Ok, easy too..

But the main problem occured before I do anything (partition & format). I have my own bootable CD that I usually use for partitioning & formatting.

Ok, i insert the CD & restart.
I went to BIOS & changed the boot order (1st boot: CD-ROM, 2nd: HDD-0 & 3rd: Floppy). Then restart again.
Ok the bootable CD is excellently loaded.
I typed fdisk, then came the first problem. it says something like 'no fixed disk'. I exit fdisk.
Then I typed format c:, 2nd problem occured. it says something like, 'invalid drive'.
I forgot the error message because the pc is in my office right now. I'm currently at home 'begging for help' So the error message is not accurate. sorry..

I think, if I run the CD, the hard disk will not be loaded (or should I say, hard disk failure). & If I take off the CD & restart again, change the BIOS (1st boot: HDD-0) then windows will load! Weird right?

I don't think my CD is 'corrupted' nor broken because I tried to run the CD from another PC. Yes, I can access the C drive from that PC.

Does anyone have any idea of the ... Read more

Answer:Can't format hard-disk nor do partition when using boot disk. Hard-disk failure

It sounds like it might be the bootable CD you've created is not picking up the HDD's/partitions.
To eliminate this as a posibility travel to bootdisk and grab the WinME bootdisk and boot from there. If it picks up the HDD you can FDISK and Format from there.
The other option is to boot using the XP CD and let it handle the formatting/partitioning duties...

New to this forum, sadly my laptop won't boot....I'm hoping I can get some insight here.
I get the black screen with the following messages:
"PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel Boot Agent.
No boot device found. Press any key to reboot the machine."

I can get into BIOS and run diagnostics followed by the prompt: "Success, all tests pass.".....but system won't boot.
I searched and searched the internet and tried various things but no change.
I removed and reinstalled the hard drive twice, no change.
I made sure the HDD is first to boot order in BIOS...no change.
If anyone can point me in the right direction I would certainly appreciate it.
Thank you in advance.

Press F12 at powerup - boot to the Dell diagnostics and run an extended test on the hard drive - this will take a couple of hours (not just the 10 min or so the quick test did).  It'll likely show a bad drive.

Answer:my dell inspiron3135 series 3000 cant boot it replays no boot device found...so is my hdd dead and how can i repair it

Check to see if the hard drive shows up in the boot list (F2 at powerup).  If it doesn't, it's toast.
If it does show up, run a full diagnostic (F12 at powerup) on the drive -- if it fails it'll need to be replaced.  If the system is under warranty, call Dell with the error;  if not, any 2.5" 7 mm drive will work as a replacement.

Hi there guys,

Originally i had windows 7 installed on my laptop and i had four partitions on my computer.

C - Windows 7 installed system,primary parition
D - logical partition - where windows xp was installed
E - logical parition - where my documents word files and so on
K - 160gb for applications to be installed (primary partition, system)

i installed windows xp on drive D after formatting and everything was working but when i installed easybcd to add windows 7 to boot...i encountered a problem. I cannot have xp + win7 together in the boot due to windows xp installed on a logical partition and its boot file is in a unknown primary partition. I Decided to convert Drive K to Logical and Drive D(XP INSTALLED) to primary. After my computer restarted., it brought up a new error saying no boot device(S) FOUND...

i ran windows 7 setup cd to repair but no operating system was found....i ran cmd repair typed in bootrec.exe /scanos - it found windows 7 then i tried bootrec.exe /fixboot - not working, tried /rebuildmbr computer restarted but same error. I Ran windows XP CD it said no installation sources available/found that means no harddrive. however windows 7 setup repair option i saw all the drives but i can't install a freash copy of windows on any of partitions.

Can anyone help me with this problem. what i have done wrong and how can i fix a problem like this...
thanks in advance

Answer:windows 7 b& xp dual boot and no boot device found error

Sounds to me that you now have no system (boot) partition. If you can't fix this (mark one of the partitions "system" or "boot") with the Windows 7 installation DVD or the XP installation CD use a bootable partitioning program, such as GParted.

Answer:second hdd found in bios but not in Device manager or disk management

Likely a faulty HDD. If the drive was working properly, it would be properly recognized and identified by the BIOS. If the BIOS can't see it properly there is a fault.

Test in a different PC to verify.

Answer:boot disk not found...insert system disk

It does that when windows cannot boot off the hard drive, sometimes because: 1)someone has left a floppy in the diskette drive 2) a bootable cd is in the cd/dvd player. If those 2 aren't the issue, then it may be a good idea to test the hard drive itself. Download seatools from seagate and test the hard drive. If your hard drive is failing you may want to back up any important stuff. Do the long generic test.http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/su...This works on most any drive...does not have to be a seagate hard drive.

Windows XP sp2 wont boot from hard disk.

After much to do turns out my computer doesnt recognise the hard disk.

I have a seagate 500Gb SATA hard drive, its about a year old, the computer doesnt get hot in the slightest and it shouldnt be dead. I checked the wiring, as far as i can see, its all fine.

only conclusion i come to is that my hard disk is kaput which it shouldnt be. Can anyone give me any other possible solutions to try out before i cry and/or spend money on a new one? theres a lot of data on it i dont want to lose.

If not, ill plug it in to another computer to check, i havent done that yet because it will take me hours - i can only unscrew the hard drive from one side without rearranging the room.

ty!

Answer:Hard disk boot failure -> computer won't recognise hard disk

Is your Seagate the 7200.11 series?

We've been seeing a lot of harddrive issues layely that has nothing to do with the drive itself but bad SATA cables aas the cause. Do you have another one you can switch out?

When you say the computer doesn't recognize it we're talking the BIOS here, correct?

Another suggestion is what you have already suggested but I would "slave" it in antother system and see if you can access it that way.

My computer is getting owned by a virus and i cant find the c drive in my device manager or the disk management.
i had the maleware protection virus and got rid of that with malewarebytes, but was never able to do a full malewarebytes scan because
my computer retarts before the full scan finishes. I got rid of the virus from the quick scan, which was able to complete with no problem.
im assuming i have a rookit virus, but dont really know how to fix this or anything.

I was doing some work and the laptop froze and rebooted displaying the windows recovery page but it was stuck at 0% for a long time so I forced shutdown using the on/off button. When I turned it back on it displayed an error message reading "boot device not found - please install operating system on hard drive 3f0" I firstly tried reseating the hard drive, then reset settings to default in bios, and ran memory test and hard drive test. Memory test passed but the hard drive test showed "smart check: not installed & long day: not installed". Despite all the aforementioned attempts, the problem persists. Please help

I'm not sure what the operating system is, but it is either Microsoft Windows 10 (32 or 64-bit). When I turned on my laptop on Friday, I got this following message: "Boot Device Not FoundPlease install an operating system on your hard disk.Hard Disk - (3F0)F2   System Diagnostics" I also did the quick and extensive hard drive tests and saw that it failed the Long DST Test. So I bought a hard disk drive replacement and replaced the hard drive with a Crucial MX200 2.5 Solid State Drive 500GB SATA 6Gb/s. It passed the quick test, the SMART check, and the Long DST Test, but oddly at default BIOS settings (Internal Network Adapter Boot disabled, Network Boot Protocol IPv4+IPv6 [UEFI], Legacy Support disabled, and Secure Boot enabled) it still says,"Boot Device Not FoundPlease install an operating system on your hard disk.Hard Disk - (3F0)F2   System Diagnostics"  And then, if I enable Legacy Support, I get a whole new setting: Internal Network Adapter Boot disabled, Network Boot Protocol IPv4 [ Legacy], Legacy Support enabled, and Secure Boot disabled. After saving it by pressing F10, I was taken to "Operating System Boot Mode Change" (021), where I enter the assigned four-digit code and press "Enter." After that, the computer restarted, and  I was taken to "Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key." I'm not quite sure what they mean here. I've tried everything I can thi... Read more

Hi, I recently installed a new hard drive in my laptop since my old one messed up, and now eveytime I turn on my computer it tells me that "Boot Device Not Found Please Install an operating system on your hard disk". I've also tried system recovery by hitting f11 but that doesn't work also. What should I do?

Answer:Boot device not found

Sfaisalshah Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!I read your post about not being able to boot and wanted to help -- but need more information. You said you "installed" a new drive in your laptop -- but that tells me nothing about the details.  Other than inserting the drive into the laptop, what else did you do? Please provide some details. Also, we need to know the detailed product number of the laptop, so please follow these directions: Finding Your HP Product Model Number | HP® Customer Support Also need to know what OS version you are using.  And, if it's Win10, did that come preinstalled on the laptop, or did you do the Win10 Upgrade? We can proceed once you provide the information. Thanks

Received the following message at start up:Boot device not found. Please install an operating system on your hard disk. Hard disk - (3FO)Upon running the hard drive tests, it passed the quick test, extensive test, smart check, short DST, and Long DST. It did not pass the Optimized DST test. (Failure ID: 9G9362-72K867-WPTV61-61SAO3)My question is: Where do I go from here? Is it too late to back up my files on an external hard drive? If not, how do I access those files since I can't log on and get past this start up message. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Answer:Boot device not found

I have a suggestion, you could download linux,  wary puppy would probably be the best option.  Make a linux live usb and boot into wary puppy then save all of your files.  The thing about a live usb is that you don't need to install linux to your hard drive it will just run from the flash drive.  Download here:  http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/.  Good luck

Can anybody help please? I have been having problems with my laptop for the past few months being really slow and locking up completely. I followed the instructions to do recovery back to the start and it failed big time. It's now coming up saying Boot Device Not Found. I have followed the instructions on the support to reset hard drive. I have tried to restore BIOS Settings but it comes back up with Boot Device Not Found.  I have also tested the hard drive with the diagnostics test and it comes up Smart Check passed but short DST failed. I still have the recovery disk but not sure if this will work and how to reinstall them.  In the testing screen it comes up failure id: 9CW0R1-6GU8HU-MFPX0K-60W703.

Answer:Re: boot device not found

DST: Fail means the hard drive has failed and will need to be replaced. If you are still in warranty HP will send a replacement. If not a retail laptop SATA hard drive can be used. Just be sure to get one of at least equal capacity as the original in order to use Recovery Discs. It can be larger, but not smaller capacity. For instance if you have a 500GB hdd you could use a 750GB hdd but not a 320GB hdd.

When requesting assistance, please provide the complete model name and product number (p/n) of the HP computer in question. HP/Compaq makes thousands of models of computers. Without this information it may be difficult or impossible to assist you in resolving your issue. The above requested information can be found on the bottom of your computer, inside the battery compartment or on the startup BIOS screen. Please see How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number? for more assistance locating this information. DO NOT include your serial number.  After you replaced the defective hard drive you need to install an operating system or use the HP Recovery Media you previously created. To use the installation or recovery media, you must insert the media in the computer and then turn the computer on. Next, immediate start tapping the "F9" key or the "ESC" key and then "F9". Now selelct the media from the Boot Selection screen. If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to ask. Please click the White KUDOS "Thumbs Up" to show your appreciation

Please be patient with me. I am absolutely ignorant when it comes to all things techie.

I have an HP Pavilion TouchSmart with windows 8. Model number 14-b109wm. Yesterday my laptop was working perfectly. This morning when I tried to turn it on I got a message saying, "Boot device not found. Please install an operating system on your hard disk." I clicked F2 for system diagnostics and ran two tests for the hard drive. The "quick test" said "passed." So I ran the "extensive" test and it said "not installed." I dont know what any of this means or how to fix it. I called HP and the lady barely spoke english. She said the hard drive needs to be re-seated. Again, dont know what that means. The F8 and F12 keys dont work either. Can someone tell me what is wrong with my laptop and how to go about fixing it. I would be happy to supply any other information you may need.

I have the same problem that everyone has experienced for the last 8 years.  There was an update yesterday and then my computer just comes up with the same message.  I have tried doing the diagnostics - short and long tests - which pass but do not solve the problem.  Pressing F8 does nothing to get into safe mode; F2 and F12 to change boot does not work either.  I have now exhausted all advice on all threads and it appears that for the last 8 years Dell have continued to sell laptops with a hard drive issues and never got around to solving them ever.  Should have bought an HP

Answer:No boot device found

Angelique Cassam,

Disconnect all usb devices and then restart the computer. If a usb device is attached, you could get this error.

If the system still does not start, restart the computer and press F12 at startup and run the full diagnostics. Report back any error codes.

I am having this problem and my hard drive has passed the UEFI test . do i need to open my laptop and check my hard drive connection . as i have tried all the steps and none of them is working

Answer:Boot device not found

sudhanshukumar Since the PC passed the UEFI test, the drive should be OK -- which implies this is a Windows problem. You will need access to a working PC for this step in order to create the media needed to repair your PC boot loader.Once you have that, please download and create Win10 install media from this link: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/media-creation-tool-install?ocid=ms_wol_win10Yes ... I know that is for Win10, but it uses the same generation boot loader as Win8x, so it can be used to do boot loader repairs for Win8x as well as for Win10.Boot from the media you created, and follow the directions in this link:  http://www.windowswally.com/how-to-fix-error-code-0xc0000185/You will probably have to run Startup Repair three times for it to fix all the boot loader problems. When done, your PC should boot OK. Good Luck========================================================================I am a volunteer and I do not work for, nor do I represent, HP.---------------------------------------------------------------If my posts helped you, please click the Thumbs-Up symbol on my post to say thanks. If my posts solved your problem please click "Accept As Solution".========================================================================

I need help with Boot Device Not Found. I've looked at the www.hp.com/go/techcenter/startup and it didn't help me one bit. I went to the find my computer then I went to troubleshooting then to Startup and Shut down then clicked the Startup option. I found the hyperlink that said Boot Device Not Found and I tried all of the steps. For the first step I tried to force restart and I did all of the steps and it didn't work for me. It always came back to the black screen with Boot Device Not Found on it. The second one is just setting the BIOS back to normal settings and I did that and guess what. Nothing happened. The one after that which is testing the hard drive using the HP PC Hardrive Diagnostics UEFI. So I followed the video and it says to turn off your computer then turn it back on and click F2 repeatedly, so I did. I see text in the bottom left that says F2...PC Diags or something like that. So that looked promising so I waited and it brought me back to the black screen with Boot Device Not Found on it and when I clicked F2 again at that screen it doesn't bring me to the right thing. Then I was off to do Step 4 which is reseat the hard drive. I did that and nothing happened. So now I had only one more option and that was Step 5 System Recovery. I watched the video and I did as it says, which is turn off computer and then turn it back on and when you turn it on click the F11 button repeatedly. I did as told and it did the same thing as when I clicked F2, it took me back to t... Read more

My desktop computer is experiencing some kind of boot up issue. I have a Dell Inspiron 3650 with Windows 10 that I just bought in March.
I'm not a tech savvy person at all, and I have no idea how to fix this issue.
My computer was working perfectly normal beforehand, and I was about to update and shut down my PC while I left the house for a bit. I came back home about 3 hours later and I saw my computer was stuck on 3% updating. This is where I'm sure I messed up because I know you're not supposed to force shut down a computer while it's updating because it can cause data loss. But foolishly I did it anyways because it just seemed really strange that it was stuck while updating, because it had never done that before.
I tried turning my computer back on but was met with the Dell Support Assist screen telling me "No Boot Device Found"... No matter how many times I tried restarting, it was that same screen showing up. I tried looking around to fix the issue myself and I read that I should run diagnostics to check if everything is working correctly. I ran diagnostics 2 times (I waited a couple hours) and it said "All tests passed" every time.
At this point I have no idea what to do. After looking around, I've been given the options of reinstalling Windows... but I don't have a Windows installation CD and I don't have another computer to download an installer to a USB. Im not sure what to do anymore... is my hard drive dead? Do I hav... Read more
