Preferred Solution: I have Jpeg images on a CD and my cd drive either doesn't detect the disc or does not read it.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

So is it my hardware problem?? ARG...

It sounds like a hardware issue. You could try to put it in another computer as a test, or look for updated firmware.

I painted my girlfriends grandma's house, and in return she gave me her old computer.
The computers operating system is Windows ME. Anyway, she had told me that the orginal cd-rw drive that came with the computer had failed, and she had a tech replace it with a new one.

Well, I've had the computer for nearly a year now, and now the new cd-rw drive doesn't read the disc. The light flashes, and I can hear the disc spinning, but nothing else happens. I get a:
'"Please insert disc into drive D:" response when clicking on drive D.

Recently, I had to re-install Windows due to a techinical issue, and afterwards is when I noticed this problem.

I though that the cd-rw was missing a driver and I needed to download and install it so the cd-rw would function properly. So I pulled the driver out and got the following info:
CDRW 52x24x52 OEM
Model Number: 52X24X52 CD-RW
P/N: 91.3ED37.025
S/N: 30306900JE E2

I did a search online I couldn't find any drivers for this specific model. I don't know for sure if this is in fact the problem because I'm not a tech, but usaully am able to fix quite a few things.

Anyways, I'm totally lost. Does anybody know what the problem is? Can anybody offer any knowledge about it?? Is the drive broken crap? (I know Acer isn't good)

Also, the reason that I need my cd drive at this very moment is that I just signed up for DSL
and have no way of installing the DSL software that is provided ... Read more

I have a brand new A300-1MC, only 5 days old so surely not malfunctioning already!

Yesterday I configured it to my printer and camera, no problems at all when reading the discs. However, tonight the CD drive just doesn't read any disc at all, have tried everything from a DVD to a music CD.

I am not too hot with computer stuff but hoping someone out there will be able to help and hoping it's something really simple! Have done a virus scan, just in case, but nothing showed up.
Many thanks in advance, Carol.

Do Windows recognize the drive and the BIOS also?

On the Toshiba website I have founded a firmware update for drives from Toshiba or Pioneer.

with nero what type of compilation are you using?:

Hi there,

Having a bit of an issue with an LG GSA-4163B DVD re-writer. Currently running Windows XP Media Centre Edition.

The drive seems to work fine for CD's, DVD movies, and burning, however when I insert a DVD-ROM (in this case a Sims 2 expansion pack) nothing much happens.
The icon label in "My Computer" changes from "DVD-RAM Drive" to "CD Drive" whilst the actual icon itself changes from the standard picture of an optical drive with a disc to a picture of a disc labeled DVD-ROM.

I have checked device manager and it isn't showing any conflicts or yellow ! signs, and I have tried both rolling back and updating the driver which haven't made any difference.

I have left clicked the icon once the disc has been inserted and clicked "Autoplay" - nothing. Also tried to start it manually by putting "D:\autorun.ini" in the run box and recieve a message saying that the disc is not formatted.
"Windows cannot read from this disc. The disc might be corrupted, or it could be using a format that is not compatible with windows."

Have tried to look at files on the disc using windows explorer but nothing shows, yet left clicking and looking at the disc properties shows no free space.

The disc itself is fine - have used it on another computer to check. Is it possible that my optical drive just can't decode the file system?

Any suggestions on how to get it working would be... Read more

I have a HP laptop running Vista Home Premium. I have a DVD+/- R/RW with Lightscribe drive.

After I burn any type of CD or DVD, either in iTunes or using the default program that came with my computer, no CD or DVD will be recognized by my computer until I restart the computer.

If I go to My Computer after inserting a disc it will show an icon for "CD-Rom" (i put in a audio cd) and if I double click on it will prompt with "Insert a Disc" and eject my drive.

The fact that if I restart and it works is alright, but it's stupidly annoying if I'm trying to back-up my computer and I have to restart every time I want to burn another CD.

What can I try to do to fix this?

I have a satellite pro and satellite a100. I have bought a microsoft disc to replace XP with windows 7 on the a100.

The a100 dvd drive will not recognise the w7 disc yet it plays sound and video discs fine.

The satellite pro recognises the w7 disc so I think there may be a problem with the a100 dvd drive or its settings. Can anyone help please?

Answer:Satellite A100 - ODD doesn't read Win7 installation disc

There is nothing wrong with the settings because there are no special settings to read an disk.
If the optical disk drive does not read the inserted disk, then either the disk or the CD/DVD drive isn?t OK.

Since the disk works in connection with another optical disk drive, I guess that the drive?s laser lens cannot handle the Windows 7 medium.

From my experience such issues could appear due to dirty laser lens.
I would recommend you to clean the laser lens using cotton wool tip and alcohol fluid.

In many cases this simply workaround helped to get the disk recognized again.

Help! I have a Dell 4700 with a 16x DVD-ROM drive (no burner) and when I insert a blank CD in and I try to save a file to it, the screen says there is no disc in the drive.

Please help!

Answer:My Dvd-rom Drive Wont Detect My Disc

Unless you have a cd burner, you won't be able to move that file to cd. When you move a file to cd, that's what you are doing, burning it. Also, you may have to format the blank cd before moving files to it. But for that you need the appropriate software and cd burner anyway.

Recently I acquired an LCD multimedia display with built in jpeg reader. I used the flash card with jpeg images on it, from my camera, to test it and the display's reader worked fine. Then I downloaded jpeg's from my computer onto the same flash card and tried to view them and could not. I then put the card into the camera and it would not recognize those jpeg's either, only the images made by the camera. Both would, however, open another jpeg image made by an earlier camera. All the images work fine when viewed on the computer and I cannot tell them apart by any means that I know of to get info on them. I have reformatted some to no avail. I also downloaded images directly from the web and tried them, same problem - once on the flash card, neither camera or the display's reader sees them. Since I have always gone the other way, viewing and reviewing photo images after loading them onto my hard-drive, this problem is perplexing and, so far, I haven't run across it in on-line resources. Any
insight on this would be appreciated.

Answer:external jpeg viewer won't read some jpeg's

With reverse viewing on a camera, the resolution and file naming structure and location (folder on the card) usually has to be exact or the camera will ignore the image.

Unsure about the LCD display, but could be a resolution limitation.

If I have, for example, a music CD or whatever and I take it out and put another CD in my drive it will not recognize the new cd as another cd it will think it is the same exact CD. I go to my computer and look at the icons and my d: drive has the wrong cd listed.

Last time I took out a music cd and tried to play the sims and it would not recognize the sims cd instead it will show me an audio cd under the my computer thing.

It will eve think that the sims cd is a music cd and it will ask me if I wanna play it with medial player or open the folder to look at files its stupid wtf?

This happens with any combination of cd's and with my other drive as well ( my cd burner) it could be a windows mess up

I have an xp home system with an acer 56x cd rom my other drive is an hp cd writter plus 8200 (old but works fine)

I use Direct CD 5.0 for drag and drop file burning (I have cd's with stuff that used Direct CD 3 back in the day which is why i have to use direct cd )

To be able to use another cd i have to go into my computer and right click the drive and click eject cd, this sometimes works other times it does not work.

I am writing in because I think I've exhausted all means of trying to fix an issue with my drive.

As title states, I inserted a DVD into my LG GH24NS90 but Windows 7 is not detecting it.
Info about my computer :
GA-Z68XP-UD3 (rev. 1.0) - Gigabyte
1. Installed Windows 7 OS on IDE mode
2. Tried burning a DVD using ConvertXtoDVD but it burns very slowly (even though it was set at x16) and it freezes the computer when burning.

Hence, I tried to change it to AHCI mode as information on the internet says changing it to AHCI would solve the problem,

1. Update drive to latest firmware.
2. Changed to AHCI (in BIOS) and selected my SSD to boot with success!
3. Tried to insert DVD into drive but not detected!
What can I do!!!

Answer:Help! My Cd drive doesn't detect cd

First, it could be lint or trash has gotten into and covered laser. Second, it could be the drive motor not coming up to speed or not at all! My sugestion would be try a couple of short burst of canned air to make sure you dislodge any dust. Then try a Cd, when drawer closes with a Cd on it, put a finger or two on the face plate you should feel the motor strat up or attempt to do so. If nothing happens then you need to replace Cd player!

Answer:Bitmap images instead of jpeg images

What is the source of the images? Typically images sent over the internet are JPEG or GIF However you/we can only receive what is sent to us so I suspect the bitmaps are what are being sent. There is no way a jpeg sent can turn up as bitmap as far as I can see.

Hey all,

When booting my computer, i seem to get stuck at "Detecting IDE Drives". It completes the cycle every once in a while, maybe once every 3-5 restarts. As well, my computer CANNOT boot off of my CD drive, only my disk drive. When I do boot from my HDD, my computer doesn't detect my CD Drive. Additionally, the drive doesn't even open nor does it have a light - although on occassion, it will work fine; it will open and light up as usual.

Can anybody explain how to fix this in lamens terms?

Thanks in advance!

There are a few things you can try as in this guide:

However, because of the multiple problems you describe, in the end I think you will have to replace the drive with a new one.

For reasons best left to another thread, I took my machine apart, and now that it is back together the system won't recognize that the CD/DVD drive is installed.

When I originally unplugged the cables, I had two devices, one each, in Pri and Sec slots. I did not note which was HD and which was the CD/DVD drive (rookie mistake.)

When I reassembled it all, I put the CD/DVD in Primary, and the HD in Secondary. IIRC, the machine correctly identified both the devices in the BIOS, but wouldn't boot.

SO, following advice in another thread, I disconnected everything but the mobo. Then I put the HD in the primary slot. Voila - I booted.

Then, I put the CD/DVD in the Secondary slot. Now it still boots, but the BIOS doesn't see anything in the secondary slot.

Windows sees something, and calls it "Drive E:" but won't read from it.

I ran a program called "Unknown Devices" suggested in another thread, and it identifies the drive by name (LITE-ON COMBO LTC-48161H) but it is grayed out? The status report from that program reads:

Nice description but we need loadsmoreinformation.

Since you are referring to primary and secondary I assume your system is IDE or ATA.

Have you tried asking the BIOS to detect the drives, or just expected it to happen?
Tell us about the BIOS and system and we may be able to help more here.

Tell us also what jumper settings you have on your drives and what cable connector (middle or end) you are using to connect to the drives.

Finally tell us if there are any other drives present on the cables?

You might try looking for a 'reset defaults' or 'fail safe' setting in the BIOS and rebooting, as a quick and dirty fix.

Hi everyone, this is my first time here. I apologize if this question has already been asked but a couple days ago I was trying to install a new piece of software for my daughter and my CD ROM drive didn't start up automatically like usual. I could hear it wind up but then it would stop so I went to 'my computer' and my D drive wasn't even listed there. I haven't used my D drive for a couple of months, so who knows how long this has been a problem. I had the klez virus back in July but then got rid of it. I don't think that caused the problem because after I got rid of the virus I reinstalled Norton and it worked just fine then. A couple people have mentioned that it coule be a lost driver but I don't want to waste time downloading programs that I don't need. Any thoughts?

I had to change a dead DVD drive in my Equium A80 laptop a while back and am now having problems using the restore DVD to take my laptop back to factory settings. I've updated the BIOS with the current version available but the BIOS is still unable to see the DVD drive so won't start a restore. The DVD is fine once Windows had loaded and does work fine on another PC under BIOS. I've tried a different DVD drive on the laptop but it's unable to see that either.

Anyone have any ideas on anything I can try?

Answer:Equium A80 - BIOS doesn't detect new CD/DVD drive

Hi mate,

First of all the CD/DVD drive must be recognized in BIOS that you can boot from CD/DVD drive. Otherwise it?s not possible to boot from Toshiba recovery disk.

What is the type of the old/new CD/DVD drive?

The user manual contains a list of compatible drives. Is it listed there? The point is that not all drives are compatible with all notebooks.

Hello, I'm working on my Thinkpad T41 with Windows XP Prof. SP3 (actual updates) since some years and it worked fine. Now the CD / DVD drive doesn't read any discs. Neither inside of Windows, nor at startup.- the drive is shown in the Windows XP device list- the Windows XP driver is installed without any errors- and it has a drive letter- the LED flashes, when I close the cd-drive case It seems, that the cd drive it  doesn't really start rotating fastly when I close the case. But if a cd drive realizes a disc inside, it starts rotating fastly. If I want to open the disc in the explorer it says that there's no cd inserted. It is a MAT**bleep**A UJDA765. First I tried to build the cd-drive in another Laptop - a newer Lenovo. And it worked fine there. So I thought there're some driver problems and I put the drive back in my T41.I tried some of my Backups (which I made with a bootable CD at a time when the drive worked fine). These are backups of the whole C:\-partition. So everthing must be in there. I had to use a bootable USB-Stick to start the backup programm. After recovery of several backups, the cd drive still wasn't working. Then I reinstalled the whole system. The problem didn't changed. Then - finally - I found something: I was searching a bit in the BIOS menu and the other IBM Utils on startup besides the recovery option. There I find the PC doctor 4.0. Welcome to the forum!
You're not missing a driver.
The chances are that the drive itself has gone bad.
Absent that, it could point to a loosening SouthBridge chip on the motherboard - have you experienced any problems with the hard drive or USB ports?

Answer:BIOS Doesn't Detect CD/DVD Drive? but HDD SATA

Greetings, pajajn289.

We need more information:

What is the make and model # of your machine, and the operating system version and Service Pack #?

Also, please download and run Free PC Audit, a stand-alone system information tool.

(If you get a Security Warning, don't worry about it - uncheck the 'Always ask before opening this file' box, and click 'Run').

When the scan completes, click File > Save As, name the file 'Report', and save to an easily found location, such as your Desktop.

Then attach that file to your next post per these instructions: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post.

Did the CD/DVD issue always exist, or did this just happen? If this is a new install, did the optical drive come with any installation disks?

Concerning the "hal.dll" message, check this:

Here's my hard drive:
Seagate Constellation ES ST3500514NS

I haven't been able to get Windows 7 installation to detect this drive for about two months now. I'm running on a Gigabyte GA-880GA-UD3H mobo, revision 2.1.

I recently found a list of drivers for my motherboard on Gigabyte, but I'm not sure if any of these will help me.
I also found some downloads for my hard drive.

Oh, and I can use this drive if I'm running Windows 7 on a different hard drive, but I just can't install Windows 7 on it.

Answer:Windows 7 Doesn't Detect My Hard Drive

Check if the new HDD is being detected in BIOS. Also, the HDD may be formatted as a file system not supported for Windows. Make sure it is formatted as NTFS.

I'm using a Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3R motherboard, and my hard drive is a seagate barracuda 500gb.

The system is brand new, built myself. No previous operating system on it.
I tried installing windows vista. I get past everything, until it asks me to select a drive to install to, and the list is empty. I tried every driver on the mobo's cd, and every driver on their website, none of them worked. I've tried different SATA modes, and ports on the mobo, and it doesn't work (I would dear say I've tried everything, except another OS because I don't have access to one).

However, when I select browse to search for drivers, when installing vista, I can select the local drive and search it for drivers. Does this mean it's there and it's something else, or is it just an option and what not? (there's a floppy there too, but I have none installed on the computer).

My bios sees the HD just fine. I'm out of ideas, and friggin fed up. I tried contacting Gigabyte but that was pointless.

Hi. My disk drive won't read DVD's. I bought a new game today that was a DVD, went to install and the disc drive wouldn't recognize it. I thought maybe it was just the disc so I tried 2 movie DVDs. It still wouldn't recognize. It can read CD's and such. Drivers are up to date as far as I can tell. I was talking to someone online and they said it's either a jumper issue or something about the setting of slave or primary. I didn't understand it much. Thank you!

The drive is a NEC DVD +RW ND-1100A

Answer:my cd/ dvd drive well not read disc

1. What type of DVD drive do you have (ie. a slimline drive with the laser mechanism in the tray, an open tray, slot-loading etc...)?2. Windows 2000 and Windows XP are separate operating systems. Distinguishing between them will be important if its a software problem. Go to your Start Menu, select Run, and enter "winver" (without quotation marks).3. Its a bad idea to post your email in a public forum. The only people who are likely to use it are spambots.

My DVD RW drive in my Toshiba laptop will not read a DVD+RW disc. It will read and record on a CD disc, though. It will not read a movie DVD or a blank DVD. The drive makes a small noise like it is trying to read, but that is the extent of it. CD's are fine, though. I have used a DVD laser lens cleaner, but that did not solve the problem. The DVD's used to work, but now does not. What should I do?

I put this in Windows 98 forum by accident but I do have XP....
The other day (Sunday) I bought four new CD's and started ripping them to iTunes to put on my iPod. Well I got three of them done and then when I try to get thew fourth done my disc drive wont load. I went back and put in the other CD's that I just got done ripping and they didn't work either. When I put the one that has yet to be ripped to my library the disc drive acts as if it is loading it but then it just stops. When I got My Computer and go to my e:/ drive it says "No disc in drive", this is also what I get from iTunes and WMP.

SO what went wrong? I've updated my drivers and everything but it still doesnt work

Answer:Disc Drive Won't Read Cd's...

Try another CD - maybe that one is bad.
Try playing a CD in the drive. Also, try accessing it using Windows Explorer

Go to Start...Run...type in "diskmgmt.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter - can you see the drive listed?

Go to Start...Run...type in "devmgmt.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter - do you see any red x's or yellow !'s there?

In Device Manager, locate the CD drive, right click on it and select "Uninstall". Click yes when it asks you if you're sure. Then reboot the system and let Windows re-detect and install it. Does it work now?

So i want to switch the HDD's of my 2 computers, i unplugged both drives, then i put one of the drives into the other computer attaching it exactly as it was (the master slave thingy) but the comp said it didn't detect and master or slave. So i took it out again and changed the master slave thingy so that it was the same as the HDD that i took out of the computer i was trying to get this HDD to work in.

Same thing happened, comp said it didn't detect any HDD at all.

Why can't it detect it?

Both drives are unformatted and have windows and stuff on them, i thought it'd be a simple switch a roo.

Does this mean that the HDD is not compatible in this other computer?

Or do i need to do something to make the computer detect the HDD?

My p10-304 hard drive recently failed.
I bought a new 60gb western digital 2.5" drive and installed it today.

On boot, the BIOS doesn't detect the drive, but it also doesn't detect the CDROM drive.
This makes me think it might not be the drive after all, perhaps the onboard IDE / Mainboard.

I'm a bit stuck, it's a brand new drive so should work fine, and I've no way to test the mainboard.

The only difference is that the insulation sleeve on the original drive had to be cut in half.
The important bit (the bottom, where circuits would otherwise touch metal) is still there, it's the
top bit i had to remove but that should not present any problem.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks, Stu.

What happen if the HDD is not connected to the motherboard? Do the BIOS recognize the CD/DVD drive correctly?

Did you buy the compatible HDD??? In my knowledge the notebook supports a HDD with enhanced IDE (ATA-5) interface.

But as you mentioned possibly the motherboard malfunctions and it would be advisable to contact the technician for a particular test

I had this SATA drive in an external drive for storage, but wanted to put it in my puter as the main drive due to the older drive was having intermittent problems. So I cloned the old drive to the SATA-no problem. Installed in pc and it works but in the BIOS it is not detected! I still have an IDE drive as the slave(has always been the slave). In disk management, it shows both drives and has the IDE as the master......What do I need to do to overcome this problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Why doesn't my computer BIOS detect my new SATA Drive?

You should probably set the IDE drive to either Master or Cable select, if it's the only drive on that ribbon cable. Is there a setting in your bios for SATA compatiblity mode/Native or something along those lines?

Purchased a SATA ultrabay HD adapter (P/N 26R9247) and a seagate SATA HD. Inserted the adapter in the notebook and it's not being detected. I went into the BIOS Setup and it's not detected there either. I happened to notice that the adapter doesn't have a connector for power to the HD. Is SATA self-powered? Just grasping at straws here. Any ideas?

Answer:T61P doesn't detect hard drive in ultrabay

I have the same problem.  The drive in Ultra bay cannot be detected.  When reboot, BIOS will try to boot from this drive instead of primary, until you bypass the drive.  There has to be something wrong with the BIOS, as the drive is not defective - I am able to use the drive if using an USB casing.     Message Edited by fredfromsj on 06-23-2009 09:31 PM

Hi all,

I've looked all over the internet, contacted HP, and updated my Mobo BIOS, but to no avail. I have an HP Lightscribe DVD1070i optical drive that has one Serial ATA data connection, and one Serial ATA power connection. There are no jumpers for Master or Slave. I have an MSI K9N2G Neo Mobo with BIOS version 1.20. It is not detecting my SATA optical drive, but it is detecting my SATA HDD. The optical drive i have right now is an IDE drive which I would like to move to my secondary Desktop, but can't because it would leave my Main without a working Optical Drive. I was told by HP to install SATA controllers but I can't find anything like that for my Mobo on the internet. The MSI Live Update program doesn't even find anything for me. So, is there anyone who can help me with my dilemma?

My CD-RW/DVD drive is refusing to play DVDs, acting as though there is no disc in the drive no matter what I try. I haven't used the machine regularly in a while and have just started to discover this.

It also has a problem with burning to blank discs, if that's of any interest. I've bought a lens cleaner but it will not work as the laptop still doesn't recognise the disc. Also, I've never fiddled with the region control, and have already tried re-installing the driver, but to no avail.

It's a S1900-303, model number PS192E-00G1N-EN.
Any help anyone can give is very much appreciated, this is really inconvenient.

Thanks a lot.

Answer:My Drive wont read ANY disc!! PLEASE HELP!!

Hello, have you checked the BIOS chipset drivers yet ? Run free program of Speccy : Speccy - Download . Get free version, look at the motherboard information and take note of Bios information, you may need to go to the motherboard manufacture or the computer manufacture, get latest Bios chipset for your computer and motherboard type, and if needed , go ahead and install new ones, you may have a driver issue or you may not, I got my chipset from my computer manufacture, which would be my first choice. See if this helps out, failing the chipset drivers being bad, with all the other diagnostics you have done, it would seem as if the drive is having hardware issues.

I have tried a few different discs. both dvd as well as cd. It keeps coming up with a message saying that Windows can't read the disc at all. I have checked the device manager and it shows no problems at all with the device itself. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers just in case as well. Windows found the device no problem and reinstalled them. I have gone into the registry editor and looked for the lowfilter and highfilter values to see if that was the issue. there were several things listed under the registry value for the dvd+-r/rw 0000,0001 etc and the last section being properties. when I clicked on properties however it came up with a message saying that I could not view it because it was corrupted. I am unsure how to fix that issue, nor do I know what could of caused it. I tried the fix it tool I found on the microsoft website for dvd issues, however it didn't detect any problems. any ideas on where to go from here would be much appreciated.

I bought a used Compaq Presario, as my HP hardrive had died.
This is a 32 bit system with Windows XP SP3.

I put in my data from flash drives, and proceeded to put in the programs.
All went well until I put in Photosuite 4 and nothing happened. The dive flashed its green light and then stopped.
I waited and waited - nothing.
So I went to the next program...all went well and the next...all well.
Tried again with photosuite - still nothing.

Then I tried putting in AT&T voices Crystal and MIke.
This is a 2 disc affair. Crystal goes first and then Mike.
Crystal has the "engine" they call it. So it appeared to take Crystal and got to the window that said "Finish".
Next I'm to put in Mike - so I did and I get a Message saying that Windows cannot find Crystal!
Also retried this several times.

Does anyone know what the problem is here?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Only thing that comes to mind is you need to set it as first boot device in bios.....Assuming you're trying to do a clean install off of usb flash drive. Also check the usb settings in bios to make sure it can show up as a hard drive. Some pc's might not detect the drive if it's set an odd way in the bios.
Either way if you spam f1 before and during power on and enter bios does the first boot device option see the usb drive as a possibility? Also does it have the latest bios installed?

G'morning all,

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-FZ140E laptop that's about a year old or thereabouts. It came with, and has, Vista Home Premium 32-bit. I'm trying to install the 64-bit Windows 7 beta.

Maximum PC had an article on how to create a bootable USB flash drive to install Windows 7 from. I followed the instructions to the letter, and the desktop listed in my sig will boot off this flash drive. I got all the way to the Windows 7 install screen before I cancelled, as I don't want to install it on my desktop.

However, for the life of me, my laptop REFUSES to pick up the flash drive. I've enabled the "External Drive Boot" option and moved all the USB drive options to the top of the boot order list, but it WILL NOT pick it up. This laptop has 3 USB ports and I tried all three.

This is the only flash drive I have laying around that's large enough, but I've got one at work somewhere and I'll try that too on Monday... Does anyone have any ideas why my laptop won't boot from the USB flash drive when my other computer will?

Thank you!

Answer:Laptop doesn't detect bootable flash drive containing Windows 7

try a BIOS update.

also check your BIOS some BIOS's have an option for additional boot device to treat as a floppy or treat as a hdd - choose hdd if you have such an option

Hi, I've never posted before, and I don't know if I'm in the right area, but you guys seem to know lots.

I recently got Bioshock as a gift - a legal copy from Best Buy. I tried putting in the disc, but neither of my 2 DVD burner drives can read it. They CAN however, read both CD's (game or audio) and DVD movies. I've tried several of each type.
I next tried loading the disc into some different computers. Boots up fine on both that I tried.
I then took out the DVD drive from a system that successfully loaded the disc, and installed that DVD drive it into my tower. Nothing. no change at all. So now I am confused.
I've tried running all kinds of anti spyware software, and registry fixing software to no avail. I also followed a promising sounding tech tip for the program hijackthis, which fixed some problems for me, but not that one. I am reaching the end of my tether, at least with trying to figure this out on my own.
I don't see how it could be a firmware issue since another disc drive which I know is capable of reading the disc, still can't read it when installed on my system.

I should have mentioned this part sooner.
My first disc drive barely tries to spin up the disc, but shows it as a cd-rom disc that is blank. no files on it.
the second drive seems to try and spin up the disc, but not the sound it normally makes when i've put in other dvd's, and it gives me an error message saying that &q... Read more

Answer:DVD game won't read, but it seems like it's the computer, not the disc drive

Welcome umyeahnstuff  to TechSpot

If other discs work in the drive and this one doesn't it must be the CD/DVD drive itself
If a known working CD/DVD drive, still does not work, (on one disc) then it must either be:

CD/DVD data cable - either faulty, or too long
Disc scratched or marked or non original
Computer Power Supply - Not giving enough voltage to the drive

Computer Configuration: Device manager - Confirm DMA set to on, in IDE/ATA controllers
Insufficient Memory: Paging File set too low
(the last 2 found in "System" in Control Panel

Also you may want to go to Device Manager and remove all Cd/DVD drives, restart, allow Windows to find and install them automatically.

We may need more details of your configuration too.

Howmany drives inside?
IDE/ATA or Sata ?
Windows Version?
Power Supply wattage?

Some of this information can be found by using System Specs.
Most of this information can be added to your Profile

This will help us diagnose the problem further.

Note: The best test is with a New CD/DVD drive.

I got a desktop PC from my neighbour. It's a Compaq, running XP. I had burnt a bunch of films onto a blank DVD+RW disc and tried to run it on this desktop. The drive whirls and the mouse cursor turns into a whirling CD icon but there is no auto run, no error message, no options. Nothing.

My 'D' drive cannot read it.The disc with the burnt films isn't even acknowledged on the D drive which just says "DVD Drive (D: )" The desktop drive is both a CD and DVD drive. I have also tried running this disc in my laptop and it auto runs just fine.
I have also tried running a normal DVD in my desktop and that works and normal computer program CDs work on it too. I can't seem to figure out what's wrong. The Device Manager shows there is no update needed etc.

I don't think there are any loose cables as the drive is internal and everything else works just fine. Any ideas? Need more details? Let me know.

Thanks in advance guys.

Answer:CD/DVD Drive won't read burnt films on disc

First off..... NEVER use re-writable disks for anything you really want to keep.
Those disks will usually read reliably on the same drive that created them, (even that is not guaranteed) but will seldom read reliably on other drives.

If using CD's, then use the CD-R and when using DVD's, use DVD+R
and just forget about using the RW disks.

Good Luck and Happy Holidays!

I tried to install Ubuntu and failed. i removed it using the ubuntu boot-repair so i will at least have my windows 7 back. now i get the message "Bootmgr is missing", and the windows repair (the one from the installation disc) doesn't even recognize my hard drive. when i'm loading the ubuntu installation or boot-repair it does recognize my hard drive.

i backed up all my files in case i need to format and install windows 7 again, but right now i can't do that because the installation disc doesn't detect my hard drive.

any suggestions?

Answer:Bootmgr is missing, startup repair doesn't detect hard drive

Just curious, why are you still running ubuntu's installation or boot repair? I appreciate the fact you may just be testing things, but I would suggest leaving well enough alone.

I backup photos from my phone to Google Photos which then automatically syncs them to my hard drive to a folder in Google Drive. The folder containing these images in Google Drive has been included in the Pictures library, but the Photos app doesn't see them and says "No readable photos, videos or folders found." I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the Photos app. The pictures show up fine in Windows Photo Gallery. Does anyone know if the Photos app has always ignored images in Google Drive or is this a recent development? Is there any way to fix it? Thanks.

Answer:Photos app doesn't see images located in Google Drive folders

Have you also set up the Sources for the images in the Photo App Settings? You can click add a folder and make sure the Google Drive locations are included as well.

I did it to myself.

First, the only problem I had on my PC laptop recently was that it would go into standby and never come out. I would get a dark blue screen after touching the keys. I would have to reboot the computer about 4 times for everything to load properly. So I figured I'd restore to an earlier point.
That solved the issue.
Until...I realized a whole bunch of pictures I had transfered from my camera to my computer were now missing. (I have a back up external drive but these pics didn't make the last back up).So I do a system restore undo. Dumb Dumb

THe laptop worked fine for one day.....I let it go into standby by accident. And now it won't start up me disc read error... hit CTL ALT DLT...but that does not help.

The doozy is that recently my cd/dvd drive stopped reading discs and I was planning on buying another cd/dvd drive, but didn't yet.

So.....I can't run a XP disc to try recovery....and I don't even have the original XP disc anymore either.

Cleaned up some horrible malware on my laptop last month. Ever since then this has all happened. It's a dell latitude, a hand-me-down from an ibm exec. Had it since 2004.

The computer also needs a memory upgrade. Add it all together. Memory. new disc , possibly hardware, someone fixing it......
Should I just buy a new computer????

I'm writing this post from my other Dell laptop computer.

Any thoughts?????:confused

you need to supply a bunch of detail before you can get an answer.
drive model, operating system

when it happens, how has worked before.

Disc Drive HL-DT-ST DVDRWBD CH30N on XPS8900 refuses to recognize discs.
The drive itself is recognized as indicated by CD/DVD Capabilities Viewer and CD Identifier from bustrace.  CD Identifier notes, however "No Disc" in drive.  This is any disc, including discs that were previously recognized.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled the driver to no effect.
Any suggestions?

Thank you.

Answer:Disc Drive HL-DT-ST DVDRWBD CH30N will not read discs

Make sure the drive has a region set and make sure that sata operation is INTEL RST AHCI and that the proper driver is installed.  You could also try F12 Booting a Live Linux DVD.  If it sees the drive then the drive is fine but if it doesn't then windows is hozed.

I am trying to install Windows 7 onto my laptop as I want to do a clean install to wipe off everything and have windows freshly put on.

My cd/dvd drive cannot read the disc. You can here the drive attempting to load up the disc but to know success.
I have tried Microsoft Fix, does not work (however, it has in the past as well as booting from disc at startup-that too has worked in the past), I have tried booting from the cd/dvd drive on bootup, I have attempted to go into the registry and delete lowers installers I think its called (I didnt do this on previously installation attempts and I installed fine).

I have all correct drivers according to my laptop, plus Ive gone into the packard bell website to download the correct drivers and I have used windows update too in case im missing anything.

Nothing is working.

Any help would be appreciated.
