Question: System upgrade from win 7 to win 10 on X1 Carbon 2...

Hello All, I?ve received the Windows Downgrade Recovery Media for windows 10 Pro from Lenovo and I?ve followed all steps for the upgrade from windows 7 : -Bios and all driver update with ThinkVantage-changed in bios option ?OS Optimized defaults to enable?-reboot-press f12 and boot from usb key After that, a black screen with win10 Logo appearin 10 seconds it changes to a Lenovo Logo with a lifebeltI would expect a windows form for the selection languages , but my thinkpad x1 reboot and restart with windows 7.I tried also to modify from bios the boot order putting the highest priority to USB, but in this way start a loop.I think that the problem could be in the USB media that they have sent me.My upgrade to win10 pro is stuck, do you have any idea? Thanks

Preferred Solution: System upgrade from win 7 to win 10 on X1 Carbon 2...

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, Would like to know if the X1 Carbon 5th Gen (with i7 7th Gen) Ram can be upgraded by Lenovo Service Centres to 16GB. If Yes, what is the cost to upgrade? PS: It was rather disappointing that our sell only said there was an 8GB model.

Answer:X1 Carbon 5th Gen Ram Upgrade

Hello and welcome to the CommunityThe RAM is soldered to the systemboard in x1c gen5, there isn't sockets. The only way to get more memory capacity is very expensive - the systemboard replacement.

Hi, i am about to buy a Carbon X1 Gen 4, but since the 512 GB PCIe-NVMe takes 4 weeks to get shipped (and it is a little cheaper ) i was thinking of going for the 128 or 192 gb SATA3, buying the big drive separately and doing the upgrade by myself.  Is this in general possible, to upgrade from sata3 to PCIe-NVMe, or do you have to go for PCIe right from the start? if this is possible, is one of the following SSD compatible? and which one is to recommend?http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-950-512GB-PCIe-NVMe/dp/B01639694M/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1459726399&sr...http://www.amazon.com/Kingston-Digital-Predator-SHPM2280P2H-480G/dp/B00V01C6M8/ref=sr_1_3?s=pc&ie=UT... I know, there is a chance that this question has already been answered here in the forum, but I now spent quite some time and I only found the question answered for the third gen... Best and thanks a lot!S

I purchased my X1 Carbon with a 128GB SSD (SanDisk FRU 45N8297) that I'm trying to upgrade to a 256GB SSD (SanDisk FRU 45N8483). Before I started the upgrade process, I created another Rescue & Recovery Startup disk, backup my data, created an image using windows 7 and created a windows 7 startup disk. I installed the 256GB SSD, and thought that I would have to reformat the SSD, but when I tried to do so with the lenovo repair disk the option to "Format and repartition disks" the drive was not selectable (the checkbox was greyed out). the Lenovo repair disk stated: if you're unable to select an option above, installing the drivers for the disks you are restoring to might solve the problem" but couldn't find any and the Lenovo BIOS recognized the 256GB drive, so I'm not sure that is the issue. I not sure whether I should try installing & running (from the lenovo driver website):1)Drive Erase Utility for the Resetting the Cryptographic Key and the Erasing the Solid State Drive2)Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver Windows 7 (64-bit), Vista (64-bit), XP (64-bit) - ThinkPador something else I think this is the wrong path so I also tried the system repair disk:1) tried restoring to a previous image (from the 128GB) it tells me"The system image restore failed.Error details: Windows did not find any disk which it can use for recreating volumes present in backup. I just purchased a new X1 Carbon with a 512Gb PCIe-NVMe SSD.  I failed to follow my general rule of getting as much memory and disk as possible.  So, I'd like to upgrade this SSD but have three questions: 1)  What actual part do I have to order from Lenovo,2)  How do I install it, and3)  How do I copy the physical 512Gb SSD to the new 1Tb SSD, so I still have the Lenovo O/S and everything else I've installed on it? I have partitioned my SSD so there is: 1 - 260Mb of a simple EFI System partition1 - 1000Mb of a Recovery partition1 - 84Gb of a Windows 10 partition1 - 391Gb of an additional partition (defined as D:\) Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks,

I have the 2015 Carbon X1 and want to replace the existing 120GB SSD with the Samsung XP941 512GB. Can someone walk me through, or provide a link to the process of installing the Windows 7 on the new SSD? I know that the SSD is compatible, and know how to swap the drives.  Do I create a system recovery USB through Windows on the old SSD and boot from it with the new SSD installed, or do I need to clone the existing SSD to the new SSD. I currently have Windows 7 installed through downgrade rights in Windows 8.1.  All I want to do is have a "fresh" / "factory installed" version of Windows 7 on the new SSD. Thanks!

Answer:Upgrade SSD on 2015 X1 Carbon

You have the right idea: with the original M.2 stick still in the machine, create a recovery USB drive.  Then shutdown, swap the sticks, and boot the recovery USB drive you made; do a full re-install.  This will result in a from-factory configuration, complete with recovery and hibernate partitions on your new blazing-fast M.2 SSD. Note that it is very difficult to clone these PCIe-connected M.2 drives - you can't boot the originally installed drive as a USB drive, and you can't readily connect the PCIe M.2 SSD to a USB port.  (I have heard of a device to mount the PCIe M.2 drive to a USB port, but have never seen one in the wild.)  There are PCIe cards for desktop computers that can take the PCIe M.2 drives, so that's the alternate approach. -frank

Hello there.I recently purchased a Thinkpad X1 Carbon which came pre-installed with Windows 7 Pro, but also included a Windows 8 Pro upgrade DVD.Now, as you probably know, the X1 Carbon doesn't have an optical drive so I can't actually use this disc.My question is if there is any way for me to use this via a USB flash drive as I don't own a USB optical drive. The label on the DVD itself says"Operating System Recovery DiscWindows 8 Pro (OEM Activation 3.0 Required)"The files on the disc are not the usual files you'd see on a Windows installation disc.Does anyone have any experience with this? As of right now, it's basically cheaper to get the upgrade directly from Microsoft rather than buying a USB optical drive.

Answer:512 gb SSD upgrade options for 1st gen X1 Carbon

The x1 carbon gen 1 uses an SSD that is not the "normal" mSATA drive and is not M.2.  I have used an adapter like the one in your link (different brand) to allow the use of a different drive and it works fine.  The problem is that yours supports M.2 drives that are format 2242 (42mm long) but not the more common 2280 format cards.  I could find no adapters to work with 2280 drives, and it looks to me like there wouldn't be enough room anyway.  The only 512GB M.2 card I have seen in 2242 format is this one:
https://www.cdw.com/shop/products/Transcend-MTS400?-solid-state-drive-512-GB-SATA-6Gb-s/3861108.aspx...

I am not recommending a particular brand or seller.

That 1st-gen X1 uses a special small form factor SSD, not mSATA.  There's some discussion here that may help explain what it is:

Hey everyone, I bought an almost new second hand 2nd gen X1 carbon a few mths back.  I absolutely love the laptop, been looking for something slim, sleek and powerful, but I'm having some serious performance related problems with it.  I usually have a lot going on, many browser windows, excel sheets, work docs, outlook, pdfs, skype, photoshop, AVG AV, etc all running for my work simultaneously and the laptop just can't keep up.  It's extremely slugish, slow and freezes constantly.  My CPU, Memory and Disk is always maxed out when I check task manager (90-100%). My currently machine has 4GB ram (mistake #1) and equipped with the i5-4300U CPU (1.90GHz 2.49GHz). I'm trying to find a replacement, but I don't want to spend over 2K on a new laptop.  I'm trying to find some used Gen 4s for sale.  I believe a Gen 3 might also give me some issues.  I found a good deal on the below: X1 - 4th Gen Intel Core i7-4600U processor. 3.3 GHz Turbo Boost -Intel HD 4400 Graphics -Windows 10 Professional 64-bit -8GB DDR3 Memory -256GB Premium SSD Storage -14.0" 1600x900p display  I tried looking this up on the Lenovo site and I don't see this CPU offered on the 4th gen.  Is this a false advertisement ad or is it an actual Gen 4? Any suggestions on the above, or the Gen 3s? Is their any other Lenovos which are also slim and powerful which can handle my workload and is suggested? Thanks!Dan

Hi dannyddn1, and welcome to the Lenovo User Community!

Well that's confusing isn't it.

Lenovo has ThinkPad X1 Carbons, Gen 1 through Gen 5.

Then there are Intel Core processors, 1st Gen through 7th Gen.

X1 Carbon Gen 5 can be configured with either 6th gen or 7th Gen Core processors.
X1 Carbon Gen 4 is configured with 6th Gen Core processors.
X1 Carbon Gen 3 is configured with 5th Gen Core processors.
X1 Carbon Gen 2 is configured with 4th Gen Core processors.X1 Carbon Gen 1 is configured with 3rd Gen Core processors.

Got it?

The ad you are looking at is for a ThinkPad with an actual 4th Gen Intel Core processor. But it's a Lenovo X1 Carbon Gen 2.

Wow, who dreams this stuff up ?

Hi there, There is an earlier discussion about SSD upgrade for 1st generation x1 carbon, up to 256GB. Someone mentioned two specific models that has the proprietary SSF form factor on this machine. Hi, I have a 2nd gen X1 Carbon (Type 20A7) that I bought about 3 years ago. I bought it configured with a 256GB SSD, but I'm quickly running out of space and would like to upgrade the drive. I have a few questions about this: I believe this generation of the X1 Carbon came with a max SSD size of 256GB, but does the system/motherboard, etc. support larger sizes? Is there a limit? I'm aiming for either 512 GB, or possibly 1 TB.Will the size of a new drive I choose impact speed/performance in any way?Lenovo doesn't seem to sell a 512 GB drive or larger drive for this system. Can I use a non-Lenovo one (i.e. bought from Newegg, Amazon, etc.)? I searched around on the Lenovo forums and it sounds like it's a stanard M.2 drive in the 2nd gen X1 Carbon, so should I be fine as long as I get an M.2 drive?M.2 drives have a few different connector types: B, M, and B+M. Does anyone know which connector type I need to get for the 2nd gen X1 Carbon?I'm planning on cloning my current drive onto the new larger one. What kind of adaptors, etc. would I need to do this? Also, I've never cloned a drive before so please excuse me if this is a dumb question, but are there any issues cloning a smaller drive to a larger drive (i.e. the system only recognizing 256GB on the new larger drive)?Any other things I should keep in mind? Thanks in advance!

Answer:X1 Carbon Gen 2 (Type 20A7) SSD Upgrade

Lenovo lists 512GB drives as available, but there is no motherboard limit.  On that model, you need one that is described as SATA-3 (not NVMe) and size 2280.  Drives have B + M Key.  Not Lenovo drives should work, but I always suggest checking the seller's return policy in case of problems.

Hi, I am interested in getting the X1 Carbon with 256GB SSD, but too expensive to get it from Lenovo.Anyone have recommendation of one they've used? Amazon has one (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004W2JL2A?ie=UTF8&tag=9172218-20&linkCode=xm2&camp=1789&creativeAS... It is the 256GB Crucial M4 SSD and on sale today only for $156. If anyone know if that is compatible, that would be great. Thanks,

Answer:X1 Carbon Touch - SSD Upgrade (Recommendation??)

I'm pretty certain that the SSD is proprietary on the X1 Carbon and Touch model. I wouldn't count on being able to upgrade it at this time.

I have a Lenovo X1 Carbon i7, 8GB with 256GB SSD. I want to add some more storage to the laptop. I have a 128GB SSD card permanently installed in the SD card reader. This gives me an additional storage area. However, I need some more storage. Since the SSD is propetiery to Lenovo, its probably not possible to get something bigger than 256GB (also very expensive if you buy later on). I read on another thread that a secondary mSSD can be installed if WWAN card is taken out.  Has anyone replaced WWAN card with mSATA? Is this possible? I know it voids the warranty but I am not worried about warranty.  Thanks

PSREF for X1C 5th gen shows the following from Specification tab as it related to WWAN: WWAN (optional): Integrated Mobile Broadband 4G LTE-A, Qualcomm? Snapdragon? X7 LTE-A (Sierra Wireless EM7455)SIM CARD (opt): Micro-SIM card slot, opt Verizon LTE (US) or Lenovo? Connect (EMEA) SIM cardThis is different than the X1C 4th gen which also has a "WWAN Upgradable" entry, which means the antennas are pre-installed, and you just need to add the WWAN card itself.  Does this mean that all 5th gens ship with the antennas pre-installed, or does it mean they simply haven't produced WWAN Upgradable SKU's yet? NONE of the "US" models (20HR) in PSREF from pre-installed with the EM7455 card, so I can't even order a SKU that I know has all the components.  At the same time,  It seems highly unlikely to me that  they have no US models that have antennas pre-installed, so you can upgrade them after the fact.

X1 Carbon Yoga 1st GenModel number: 20FQCTO1WW It worked great since I received. One day I upgraded BIOS to the latest (it was v1.23 by the time), then I noticed the fan keeps running regardless the actual CPU usage. Very occasionally, fan will stop and start again soon. Often time, the fan will start to run as soon as the laptop is turned on. It's quite annoying because of the fan noise (even though it's not so loud), and I'm sure it will cause more battery consumption.  Recently I upgraded to the latest v1.24 BIOS, but the problem was still the same. Anybody has the same issue? A bug in recent BIOS firmware?

There is a new firmware release (FWNV15) for the NVMe SSD of the X1 Carbon 5th. I'm wondering if there is a way to perform the upgrade on a machine with no Windows installed on the internal SSD? I've installed Ubuntu on the NVMe SSD and have a external USB Drive with Windows 10. I tried to run the Firmware Update Utility on the "external" Windows 10 but no luck so far. Windows reboots and after it's up again the utility just shows some generic error message. Also, there doesn't seem to be a booteable ISO. Any recommendations on how to upgrade the firmware with my setup?

Gone deep into back pages for any subsantive clue as to what to do.Nothing concrete. Work sent me an X1 gen 4 i7 16 gig ram 500 gig SSD HD w 1040 screen. It's perfect for my mobile needs. Except I somehow got one with the 128 gig SSD which is quickly gettng eaten upbefore I even use it. So, I found a killer deal on a Samsung 950 Pro 512 gig PCIe NVMe SSD.Perfect. It's still wicked fast. Now I need to clone the proprietary software from the 128 gig sata M.2 SSDto the Samsung M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD.I downloaded Macrium Reflect andgot an M.2 enclosure. The Samsung won't go in the socket of the enclosure. It just does not slot in. I took the 128 gig drive out of the X1 and tried it in the enclosure. Answer:In UK - trying to find somebody to do the mod for me (Upgrade X1 carbon screen into my T430)

Hi,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

First, you will void your warranty. If you have a warranty, this could be a very bad plan. Also, I?m not pretty sure how compatible the X1 carbon screen will be with the T430. I doubt an authorized Lenovo technician will not be ready to do such a replacement. You may have to find a third party technician.

Best regards,
Mithun.

Hi all!  I just ordered the ThinkPax X1 Carbon 2nd Gen (20A70037US, i7, 8GB, 256GB, Touch).  The only thing I wanted and could not get with it is the WWAN Card. I already have the 2011 version of the X1 (1286-CTO) which comes with the Gobi 300-0 WWAN Card (Sierra Wireless MC8355 ? Gobi(TM) 3000).  I have been trawling the net and forums to check if I can pull out the Gobi 3000 from the older X1 and use it successfully in the X1 Carbon 2nd Gen.  Is the Gobi 3000 compatible with X1 Carbon 2nd Gen?  Will drivers or software be an issue?  Are the slots compatible? I welcome any and all advice.  Thanks!

Answer:ThinkPad X1 Carbon WWAN Upgrade Question

Hi, VMarcoUnfortunately Gobi 3000 card you have isn't compatible with X1C Gen 2:- mechanically as it is in the mini pci-e formfactor vs new m.2 formfactor (formerly NGFF) new X1C supports;- logically as your card isn't approved by Lenovo to use in new X1C, it isn't whitelisted for that so as result laptop with that card will be blocked. There are several wwan options for X1C Gen 2 depend of the carrier you'll work with and the speed of wwan access you need:1. Ericsson N5321, HSPA+ 21Mbps:, FRU 04W38422. Gobi 5000 (Sierra Wireless em7355), LTE/EVDO/HSPA+, FRU 04W38012a. the same as item #2., with SIM sku, FRU 04X60383. Sierra Wireless em7345, LTE/HSPA+, FRU 04X6014IMHO the best choice is item #3:- supports both networks class 3g and LTE- supports frequency bands and network carriers almost worldwide, European as well as US (LTE Verizon, AT&T, Sprint)em7345 supports win8/8.1 natively w/o 3rd drivers. For win7 new drivers should be published soon officially. The only lack  there isn't a soluton for card activation within Verizon network yet. Lenovo and Verizon know about that and work for the solution.

Does anyone know what options are available for WiFi card upgrade? The X1 Carbon I have has slots for a HMC and one other slot. Is this other slot for SFF cards or maybe its a Mini PCIe card? What card will fit this other slot? Also, when I try to install WP2 HMC card the grey radio anttena is not long enough to reach, its short about a quarter of an inch. What am I supposed to do!! Samsung 950 pro will not work if you got x1 Carbon 1 gen to 3rd gen since 950 drive uses NVMe technology and PCie 3.0 which the laptops do not have gen 3 has got PCIe 2.0 and no NVMe support so answer would be no if you got one of these generations.

Last night there was an update from Windows that I didn't request and when it was completed there was a message on my screen that everything was the same as it had been before. The message stayed there so I assumed it was still doing something, so I left it and went to bed. This  morning it wasn't acting normal, so I ran a scan to make sure everything was ok. It said it was. About 10 minutes later the screen went black. It's still on because I can hear when emails come in, but there's nothing on the screen. I've done control/alt/delete a few times but nothing happens.  Everything I need to work on is on the desktop. I'm new to this laptop (got it for Christmas) so I don't know everything about it yet. My questions:1. Could I have done something to turn off the screen? If so, how do I get it back on?2. If I can't get it on, is there a way to get my documents off it?Help! Thanks,Nancy

Hi, I bought my Carbon Touch looking forward to activating with Verizon and replacing my current 3g ipad.  After hours trying to figure out how to enable broadband, I find out that apparently the "touch" models don't offer it.  Can someone at Lenovo explain how they can have promotional materials like the page at http://www.lenovo.com/products/us/laptop/thinkpad/x-series/x1-carbon-touch/ that says "ThinkPad X1 Carbon Touch" and "Embedded 3G Connectivity" while not offering it at all? Then, I thought I'd return the Touch and get the regular Carbon, but I'm seeing now that, despite all of the reviews and promo materials that say otherwise, it doesn't support Verizon either.  How can this be true?  Just about every review that I read about these laptops is flat wrong on these topics.  What's the scoop? I tried calling technical support a couple of times and they were of no help.

Answer:X1 Carbon Touch WWAN (Carbon does not support Verizon and Carbon Touch has no 3G at all)

jprny,

Welcome to the Support Forums! I can definitely understand your confusion and I know you must be frustrated. I can clarify that the WWAN is optional in the X1 Carbon, from the same link you provided you can open the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Touch Ultrabook Specs it states there is Optional 3G WWAN.

Here is the the X1 Carbon Personal Systems Reference (You will find the X1 Carbon Touch on the very bottom)
This shows the different models of the X1 Carbon and what specifications are included. Unfortunately, I only see AT&T as the 3G provider on the standard models. From the Parts List it looks like there are other options to choose from that would make it a configured to order machine. You may want to contact Verizon to see if any of the WWAN cards work with their network.

I would recommend contacting the after sales team:

This is what always happened when I booted up the computer: First time when I pressed the power button, the computer was on for just 2-3 seconds showing the "Lenovo" logo, and then automatically went back to power-off with nothing happened further. And then I pressed the power button again, the computer booted and loaded the operating system without any problem. Even though I'm able to start the computer in this way eventually, it is very annoying.  It happens every time when I cold started the system (no such a problem if I simply restart the computer).  Anyone knows why I have to push the power button twice to boot the system?  I suspect it's something related to the rapid start technology, but cannot locate the exact reason.  Anyone else has the similar problem?  I have a Windows 8.1 now, but the problem existed when I was still using Windows 8.  After I upgraded to 8.1, the problem still exists.

When the system resumes from sleep or from the screen being turned off, the keyboard backlight doesn't resume to its previous setting. VERY annoying when you're trying to work. In this thread they talk about a potential BIOS limitation causing the backlight to not resume after a restart, but what about after sleep?https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-P-and-W-Series-Mobile/W540-Backlit-keyboard-always-on/td-p/151... By contrast, the X1 Yoga Gen 2, does resume the backlight state after screen off, sleep and even restart! Surely the Carbon should have the same feature set as its brother.

Hi, I'm new here, so please be gentle. I have a Carbon X1 Lenovo laptop which I have used for a few days, made some changes on it and realized just now that it would be good to have a recovery media just in case. The question is - if I decide to create the recovery media at this moment, will using it allow me to restore the laptop to its factory settings or to the current state? Thanks in advance for any help!

Answer:Carbon X1 - creating factory defaults recovery media after making changes in the system.

Hello and welcome,

Recovery media restores to factory state.  Backups restore to the state of the machine at the time of the backup.

I was considering getting this laptop , probably leaning toward the touch version.  But display quality is really important to me, I do much software evelopment so i stare at thescreen a lot of course  I know this is not IPS panel, but more like the TN panel used in MacBook.   How does it compare to Macbook dispay (non retina). is it, worse, the same, or better?

Answer:Display quality of X1 carbon / X1 carbon touch

I haven't spent much time on a newer MBP, but it's very equivalent to a MBP a few generations back, but is brighter. It's for sure usable, and while IPS would be prefered, I can easily live with it daily.

I used the 1st gen X1 Carbon for a while and found out that it's very robust and the touch feeling is very good. I guessed that all sides (A+B+C+D) of it are made by carbon fiber. Correct me if I'm wrong. But when I use my X1 Yoga 1st gen, which has only carbon fiber on A side (the cover behind screen) and uses "Super Magnesium" on C+D sides (the cover around keyboard and behind the keyboard), this design bring several problems: 1. " Super Magnesium" is still metal, if you crash it by accident, you may leave a scrath on it permanently, this happens more on edges;2. what's more, the paint at the edge of " Super Magnesium" will be rubbed away with time goes on, and you will see the white metal not the ThinkPad black;3. metal will suffer from deformation by force;4. the D side of my X1 yoga feels loose when you hold it with one hand, which make you feel cheap of this $1500 machine. Thus I hope the next gen of X1 Yoga or X1 Carbon can provide a pure carbon fiber version, for better build quality and user experience. How do you guys think about it?

Answer:Pure carbon fiber for X1 Yoga and X1 Carbon?

HelloThe small carrections about the case materials, according to the laptop specs.x1c gen1Display cover: Carbon Fiber;Bottom: Magnesium/Aluminumx1 yoga gen1Carbon-Fiber HybridSo, IMO the question isn't material itself related only, but the case parts painting quality.
