HP Envy 17 2nd HHD cable and caddy

Question: HP Envy 17 2nd HHD cable and caddy

Hello.I've owned this laptop for a couple of years now and it's been great. I've recently been thinking about upgrading the hdd to a ssd and was surprised to find out that this model has space for two drives. I've been looking for a caddy and cable to fit a 2nd drive to the laptop and for the life of me can't find any. I believe that HP called it a Hard Drive Hardware Kit or something. Can anyone let me know where I can purchase one from at all as I can't find one on the hp site (or any other retailer at that). Many thanks.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I purchased this laptop with an M.2 drive.  I wish to add a Smasung 850 Pro (1 TB) drive to the laptop.  I have opened the laptop and noted that since I did not purchae it with a "normal" drive, there is no caddy or cable in the hard drive area.  Where can I obtain the correct caddy and cables needed to attach an SSD? Thank you,

I have an apparent hard disk failure and I am planning to install a new disk, but I want to insert the failed disk into a disk caddy to attempt recovery of a few items of data which were not backed up.

There is however a clip which secures one of the cables onto the drive housing, and I have not encountered this type of clip in previous drive rescues. The clip is pictured in these linked images:

https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B5EglFQB3L3oWmFzcTFuZkJyR3M
https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B5EglFQB3L3oNHlWTnVoaDlCX0E

(The clip is the small metal protrusion at the very centre of each image)

I need to know how to remove this clip, please - preferable in a way so that it can be reinserted if I am in fact able to recover the drive. Any help much appreciated!

When I open and close the laptop the screen will flicker often.  It finally has gotten to the point where the screen only shows with corlorful lines and I lcannot see the screen at all. Sometimes when I play around with moving the screen up and down by closing it I can get the screen to display. I replaced the screen itself and it was working fine for about an hour or so until I decided to the close the laptop up and then the flickering began again. I searched a few boards and realized this particular model could have issues with the monitor cable and not the actual lcd monitor itself.   I am looking for a model#  to purchase the lcd cable to replace.  Can anyone assist me with this? HP ENVY 14-1260SE BEATS EDITION NOTEBOOK Product: XZ211UA#ABA

I know this is one that has been floating around the forums for a while but I have not been able to find anything that works in my situation. When I connect my laptop to my TV (Panasonic Viera Plasma) via an HDMI cable, I can get the video to show on the TV fine but there is no audio on the TV; it comes out of the laptop. (Split off from this thread.) I have to provide evidence of a receipt for an elecrical item under guarantee but the scanned details are on my seven-years old Compaq Presario CQ71-320SA Notebook PC.  I couldn't transfer it and others as the free (and forced) upgrade from Win7 to Win 10 had screwed it up. I bought a new laptop and the transfer of documents had to take a back seat. I'm thinking of simply copying all the docs from the Presario onto a stick and then saving to my new Envy from that. But S*d's Law has struck - the battery on my Presario is flat - I don't want to use the power cable that came with it because of an alert warning (mentioned in the other thread). Can I use the power cable that came with my HP ENVY NOTEBOOK 15   - AH151sa to power up the Presario?

Hi, Which HP Ultraslim Keyed Cable Lock Model will fit my Envy ultrabook (Envy 13 d010nf) ?Ordinateur portable HP ENVY - 13-d010nf (ENERGY STAR)Model : T8T27EA On the web, I see two potential  Ultraslim Keyed Cable Lock Models (H4D73AA and H4D73UT)  but they are often out of stock. Would it be possible to get the exact specification from HP before I try yet another blind buy on the net ? Since the Envy is new, it's not added to lists of compatible Notebooks on sales sitesand on the French HP Forum (I live in Paris) they gave me a link to the "dock station Cable lock" model.  I do not want to cable my ultrabook to a station. I want to be able to secure it directly from the slot on the left side and lock it to my desk at work. I have been proposed the solution of a circle metal disk (more like a two inches bump) to glue to the ultraportable which I find would break the elegance of the product. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide on this "not so interesting" question ;-)Have a nice anyhow. EnvyD010nf2016

Im planning to buy a HP Envy 13  to use for school, since this notebook is lightweight and thin and the battery life (from what I've read) is decent. I've noticed that there are 2 HP ENVYs available, both with the same specs, both with the same price ( ENVY 13-d120nd and ENVY 13-d010nd). The right hinge on my Envy 17 Touch Screen has failed, causing the case to become separated and the lid to be nearly impossible to close. This is the second Envy 17 to fail in this way. About a year ago my husband's broke and HP spent nearly three months attempting to repair it before finally just shipping him a new one. This appears to be a flaw in the construction of the hinge assembly, and we have noticed that the newer models, such as my husband's replacement, have a much improved design in comparison. We spent about $1,300 on this computer (it has an i7 Core and 16 GB of RAM) and hoped it would hold up for a while. The laptop was great, but now it has become difficult to use without fear of causing further damage. Thank you for any suggestions.

Recently noticed the notebook wasn't aligned to my desk. Thought the feet on the bottom were uneven. They're fine. The notebook seems to have a "bubble" on the keyboard where it's higher than the rest of the keyboard. Obviously it's impacting the entire notebook since it's no longer sitting level. I'm concerned it's going to impact the performance of the keyboard and the fact that it's not even and "rocks" when I'm typing is driving me crazy.   Can someone please direct me on how this can be repaired. The HP Envy 17t (2015 model) is no longer for sale at the HP Store so I am thinking of purchasing the HP Envy M7 n109dx from Best buy but I am noticing that there are some differences between that model and the one that originally was selling in the HP Store.  I have noticed the following about the Envy M7 vs the Envy 17t Weaker Processor- The Envy 17t had a Quad Core i7 6700 HQ vs the Dual Core i7 6500U on the M7Weaker Graphics Card- The Envy 17t touch had a Nvidia GeForce 950 GTX vs a 940 GT on the M7No fingerprint reader on the M7 like on the Envy 17Some websites mention that the M7 only has dual speakers and not quad speakers and a subwoofer like the 17t. Is there other features that the M7 is missing in comparison to the Envy 17t Touch? Bonus: Would I be able to upgrade it to have two HDD's in the future using a hard drive Caddy like in the Envy 17t or not.

Question: M58 HDD Caddy

Hi, I want to fit a second HDD to an M58p small form factor (or whatever these small ones are called!) in place of the optical drive. I assume that Lenovo do a bracket kit for this, but I can't seem to find any part numbers etc... Anyone out there shed any light on this? Many Thanks, Mike

Answer:M58 HDD Caddy

Fitting a HDD into an optical drive bay can be accomplished with an inexpensive 3.5"--> 5.25" conversion kit available anywhere (Like the one HERE). I think Lenovo has a bracket for that but it would be really expensive. The hole for the optical drive can only be covered up by a blank bezel, that's going to be the tough part to find, if it is an issue for you at all.

This is a IDE caddy that you put your Hard Drive into. click hereThe Jumper on your Drive as to be set to Master for it to work, you then just plug it into a USB port for it to load. Do not just pull it out when you have done as this can damage the drive. In lower Task Bard near clock you will see a Icon with a Green arrow right click on this to safely remove. If you have problems shutting it down, power your PC down then remove the plug before restarting PC

Hi everyone, I recently purchased the Z50-70 laptop and so far I love it! I feel it could be a little bit faster with a solid state drive, however.  I have a 250GB 840 Evo I can throw in (with a caddy for the 1TB HDD that's already installed), but from what I've researched I can't have a 1TB HDD in the CD drive slot, but I'd rather not put the SSD there, because it wouldn't perform at full speed and would completely defeat the purpose of that drive.  I guess what I'm asking for is the maximum capacity the CD drive slot will allow for a HDD caddy? Thanks!Gage Henry

Question: 8.1 from hd caddy

Hello all,

So I find myself in an odd situation. I upgraded form xp to windows 8.1 on an old laptop I had. Since then, this laptops video card has started to go. My question is this. How will Microsoft deal with the licensing in this situation. I attempted this and got a notification that I will need to reactivate windows, but does this count as a second pc in their eyes? Or can I make the call and just say that the hardware has changed.

another note, Ideally I would like to move between both computers without re licensing, but I'm assuming this might not be possible.

I want a second caddy for switching out the drives on occasion.   I believe quickstart (splashtop) requires the drive to be internal, not USB. Does the S10 share the caddy with another lenovo product, so that I can find it on ebay or elsewhere?

Hello,
I'm having problems with my WD blue 1TB HDD (which came originally with the laptop) being recognized using it in CD-ROM caddy.
I bought Dell Inspiron 17 5767 like a month ago, and of course I want to upgrade it with SSD (Samsung 850 EVO 256 GB), and then use original HDD instead of CD-ROM.
I already read the post: en.community.dell.com/.../19536697
I have Salcar caddy, which is proven good, already in previous 2 laptops, one HP and one Dell. Also the current one with this HDD was tested in older Dell and the disk is recognized and works superb. So from this I can conclude, the caddy and the disk are completely fine, something must be wrong on my new Dell side.
I upgraded BIOS (to 1.09), SATA and other drivers yesterday ... nothing changes.
The OS (on the SSD) is original as got from Dell, as the data was migrated with the Samsung utility from original HDD to SSD. Then HDD was formatted, currently has only one partition.
In BIOS I disabled Virtual machine and LAN boot settings, as they are not needed. Also, LPM is disabled, as suggested in other post. But still no change.
The HDD in caddy is not recognized in BIOS, nor Windows, nor Disk Management, nor CMD (diskpart).
I also tried to create smaller partition, about 850 GB, still not recognized. I didn't try with smaller than 750 GB, maybe should do this, but I don't believe this is a problem.
I bet there are other users out there with the same problems - did anyone got this worki... Read more

I've got one lying around somewhere... the CD drive caddy... in which you add an SSD and replace your CD drive.

Dumb question: what can I do with this?
Can I have another copy of the Windows?
Can I have Linux and multiple boots?

Thanks

Answer:SSD in caddy - what can I do?

Sure.
Just wondering why not install the ssd as an internal drive without the caddy?

I have been considering a HD caddy for use on the SATA interface of my Z70 and saw some for sale. But all don't have an OEM fit and require using the Optical drive face. I don't see a release for the DVD drive when I flipped the notebook over either like my ThinkPad has w/Ultrabay. I am not sure if its even supported properly by the bios and do want to be able to used the DVD drive as well. So its not a permanent solution I am looking for. Despite have ONE USB 3.0 port I still fine it quite slow moving data to 3.0 flash drives I have bought. SATA is sata and works without a fuss as fast as the drives can cache it and write. I miss ESATA port not on this notebook. It was a must have when I was looking for a notebook before and the T520 has it all but very poor screen and sound is horrible even for voice via Skype as a business system its bad and not solution for  it.

Then I might be able to figure out how the Sata Optical drive is configured. SATA III or not.

I've a couple of 3.5" HDD (SATA and IDE) taken from an old Desktop and a Samsung PVR. I also have suitable external USB enclosures. The question is which Jumper settings to use (or leave unused) when in a USB enclosure. One HDD (WD) has the Boot flag set (SATA) and the other Seagate (IDE) hasn't. Both are 200-300 GB sized. Any advice appreciated.

Seriously, I think it is brilliant the way some non English people can communicate in English - this isn't sarcasm - I really mean it.
When a person whose first language isn't English and they write an instruction manual in English about, let's say how to put together a flat pack table or cupboard. At worst it's annoying, at best it's a laugh. Especially when you're watching someone else struggling with it.
But I feel - in view of Health and Safety - there should be a limit as to what kind of instruction manual can be translated in this way. Putting a dowel in a hole where a screw should go, is one thing. Connecting a machine to the mains, then to a PC, when you're not sure if it's the right voltage or you've slid the switch in the correct direction; is a whole different thing altogether!
I think I can speak for most people when I say that seeing or hearing about someone blowing up their PC and being electrocuted in the process; would be just about as far away as anyone can get to being either funny or annoying.
So, before anything even close to this happens to me I'd just like to ask...Does anyone use an all in 1 HDD Docking Caddy? I have just bought one and for what good the 'English' manual is to me, they could have saved their time and money and written it in Chinese? However, the good thing is the manual isn't actually giving general instructions on how to use the caddy. It is in fact telling you how to 'Clone'. Which, luckily for me is not why I got the caddy. Why luc... Read more

An older 80GB Maxtor DiamondMax lus 9 ATA/133 HDD connects, with jumper at cable select.
The Seagate, using same jumper settings, audibly connects, and shows up in disk management as "Dynamic" and "Invalid" below, and doesn't assign a letter.

Have you tried connecting it directly to your machine via SATA cable? Using another machine? It could also be a defective drive, I have experienced this in the past and it ended up being a defective HDD.

Neighbour's son's laptop died. He had games he liked to play. I suggested a caddy which she bought and connected to her PC. All the files and folders can be seen, but games won't run. Thoughts, please.

Answer:HDD in a caddy - am I missing something?

Yes, I'm afraid you are missing something.
The games would need to be installed from the original disk onto her PC in order to run. She wouldn't be able to run MS Word from the disk-in-a-caddy either. If there are documents on that drive, they'd be openable, but would use the software installed on the host machine.

Hi, I bought a Z51 (as a christmas present for my mother).I have replaced the DVD RW with a caddy (I don't know if I can post the link here). I have set up a new SSD instead of the HDD, and installed the HDD into the caddy. I have been consistently able to boot from the original HDD (in the caddy), but only after a restart. (each time: first try, does not boot, does not appear in the boot menu. Then restart, and it works fine.) Windows 10 is now installed on the SSD and can perfectly boot (without the need of restarting), but the HDD appears neither in Windows nor in the BIOS. In fact, I have been able to mount it only once, after I launched the BIOS from the windows recovery options. Then it was recognized both in the bios and in the disk partition manager of windows 10. But I am not able to reproduce this. As this behaviour is quite strange, I was wondering if: it is a BIOS issue, a driver issue, or a caddy issue... Could you please provide me some advice ?

Question: W510 HDD Caddy

Ok, so I have a W510, and ordered a HDD Caddy.  The box that the unit came in has 43N3412 written on it, but the actual Caddy has art number 43N3429.  It's not that big of a deal if they are the same part, but here's my issue... 1.  There is a HUGE gap at the top and bottom of the caddy which makes it look like it was never meant to be installed on this model. 2.  Whenever I carry my laptop sideways with the Bay facing down (going between meeting rooms, etc) the drive disconnects.  In order to see the drive again, I have to put pressure on it as if I am inserting the caddy into my laptop again. So, either this is not the correct caddy that was sent to me, or I have an issue with the case on my laptop in which the "catches" are not doing their job. (This does not happen with the DVD RW that came with the unit). Does anyone have one of these caddies working, and staying connected when you laptop is on its side?  If so, can you verify my part number against yours?  Cheers,Josh

Answer:W510 HDD Caddy

Hi same2you, The 43N3412 is the Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter III (Ultrabay Slim 9.5mm) and it's listed under accessories for the W510, but the W510 actually got a bay with the height of 12.7mm. So this would fit perfectly for the W500 that got a bay with the height of 9.5mm, but for the W510 there will be a gap like you describe. I believe the 43N3429 is the sparepart number of the same product. I cannot find a 12.7mm drive bay adapter from Lenovo and i don't think Lenovo ever offered a full-height 12.7mm bay adapter. If they will offer a 12.7mm drive bay adapter because of the new thinkpad models in the close future i don't know. I have seen 12.7mm drive bay adapters from ebay and other places for the T510/W510, but never seen any from Lenovo. If you google for something like "T510 drive bay adapter 12.7mm" you should find it. Whether or not the disconnect issue you describe is correct or not i don't know, but i find it hard to believe that's the way it should work. Since it's listed under accessories for the W510 i would except that it at least work fine with the gap, but i also find it strange that Lenovo doesn't offer a drive bay adapter that fit with the new Thinkpads. Maybe someone else can provide some more info about your disconnect problem, but i don't think Lenovo currently got a 12.7mm drive bay adapter. -gan

I am waiting for my new HDD drive to arrive for my laptop. The old drive is still working but not too reliable, but good enough for using as a temp storage device. If I put this old HDD into a USB caddy is it possible to copy all the data from this drive to the new drive including the Vista OS, enabling me to run Vista on the new HDD instead of the old drive. I have the recovery discs for the old drive but have been told these will not operate on the new HDD because I didn't purchase from the manufacturer. Any help appreciated.

Answer:USB Caddy to HDD copy

I never heard that a new drive would by design stop the old cd/dvd's from recovering the system. It may be that the disks simply use data on the drive that is hidden in a partition..Most new drives come with clone software. You put the new disk in the caddy and then clone it over. Then swap it. Hello to all,I hope someone can help me:I have an HP laptop 15-ay 035nl and I bought a Samsung SSD 850 evo and a caddy to replace DVD reader with the HDD mounted on the laptop. What have I done:- SSD has been put in place of the HDD, caddy was not in. I installed Windows 10 and everything was great - I replaced the DVD  with caddy with inside the HDD and here the problems started because: beginning the disk was not recognized, then I mounted again and had to wait a lifetime before it could be recognized by windows. When it was recognized I tried to format it from windows but I could just delete partitions.  I had 500 gb of unallocated space. - At this point, I swapped the two hard drives putting the SSD in the caddy and the HDD inside the laptop. Windows did not start, not only appeared a blue screen saying there was a hardware failure. When I put the SSD within the pc windows it had been corrupted and I had to reinstall windows  again. Same problem happened also when I disconnected the HDD from the motherboard and there was just SSD in the  caddy. - At this point I put the SSD in the laptop and the HDD again in the caddy.  I could not get  to format the HDD neither instal windows on SSD getting the error 80300024. Once I removed the caddy I was able to install windows on the SSD Now I am very confused because I do not know if the problem is the caddy itself or the DVD controller on the motherboard. Hello,I would like to ask for support with following issue. I bought new SSD HDD and wanted to use it as drive with system. So I removed the original HDD (with installed Windows 10 and more partitions) and installed the SSD. After that I installed OS Windows 10. This system works fine on the SSD. I placed my original HDD to a caddy and connected it instead of optical drive. I disabled booting from CD/DVD and USB in BIOS.  After restart, the drive was recognized in BIOS (displayed in boot order), but the laptop won't boot. It got stuck with HP logo and did not boot. I realized that when I disconnect the caddy, Windows boots from SSD. When I connect the caddy again, after a while hdd is visible in My Computer (all partitions, but without correct labels), but none of the partitions is accessible. I thought it can be because there is still instaled OS on the caddy drive. So I booted GParted from USB, removed all partitions and created one with NTFS. After that the drive is not visible in BIOS boot order, but if I connect it after Windows starts, I can see it in Disk Management.Because I'm lost with this issue, I tried some procedures with GParted and TestDisk which caused the drive was in RAW data format. Finally I removed the one partition in GParted and after boot, the drive is marked as Uninitialized and it asks me for initialize where  I can select MBR or GPT format. I tried GPT, but it failed because IO errors. My questions:1. is it even possible to ... Read more

Answer:B50-80 hdd upgrade and caddy

Hi Vendra,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

This caddy should do fine
http://hddcaddy.com/en/lenovo-ibm-hdd-caddy/1040-lenovo-b50-hdd-caddy.html

A 9mm caddy should work as your system supports that type of ODD drive

This manual list the ODD support at page 27

Al long as you don't induce any damage while you do the upgrade, your warranty is still valid.

Hope this helps
Cheers!

I bought this HDD Caddy from NewModeUS to put an additional drive in the UltraBay adapter. There is a clear plastic layer with a tab on the end over the side of the caddy that has the perforated holes in it. Usually I've seen this tab to help pull the hard drive out of it's slot in a computer but I haven't seen it completely cover the perforated holes of the caddy before.  Anyone know if I should leave the plastic layer on the caddy or not? Will it effect the temp of the drive? Thanks,

While I can't speak directly to your question, It is clear that hot-swappability of this 4th drive is not a design feature of the P70.  It is a shame that the nod to manufacturing simplification (read: cost & maintenance requirements reduction) had eliminated a very useful feature. With my W700, I can and do swap-out the optical drive for an HDD often to make speedy backups or access archived data.  It is very convenient and helpful. Alas, some would argue that USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt attachment provides adequate support for these things -- I'd still prefer a unit with the easy swap option--a workstation is supposed to be all about power and flexibility.   By way of example, Samsung realized its design error in eliminating some features and re-introduced user-removable storage to its latest line of phones.
