Typo Squatting - Fake FileHippo, Softpedia and more!

Question: Typo Squatting - Fake FileHippo, Softpedia and more!

Heads up about a string of blogs using familiar names like FileHippo and Softpedia in their URL, when searching for software downloads. I cannot guarantee their legitimacy, or safety to visit or download from these rip-off blogs.

Searching "avast 2017" in Google Search Engine crops up with many blogs using SEO techniques to distract users from the real FileHippo and Softpedia sites.

Preferred Solution: Typo Squatting - Fake FileHippo, Softpedia and more!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

So I decided to buy Windows 7 from eBay. I didn't trust the people selling product keys only, so I purchased a brand new retail package. When I shop on eBay, I always look for sellers that are really close to me so shipping is fast. So I found a seller, said to be located in Maryland (which is two states away from me), with a great price and great feedback for his W7 sells. I was pissed because when the guy sent me the tracking number, I found out that the item was coming from Beijing, China, not Maryland! But I figured, well at least he shipped it.

THEN, I get an email from eBay saying the listing for the item I just purchased because the copyright holder reported that the item may be a counterfeit. At first I was pissed at eBay because now I had to record of the transaction in my eBay account and could not contact the seller directly from within the item invoice, since eBay deleted. Plus, he had several other sells of this same item, all with positive feedback of the W7 package, and eBay did not remove the listings for them. So I was like, why me? Luckily, I had his email from paypal and contacted him. He assured me that he is the legal owner of the item and that he sent proof to eBay saying so. Still never got my records back.

Anyway, this prompted me to search counterfeit Windows 7 retail packages. I found some interesting info, but my package doesn't fit any of the counterfeit profiles Microsoft says to look out for. The top hologram is built onto the ... Read more

I mistyped a url earlier (I believe i typed 'radiosahck' instead of radioshack) and was redirected to a strange website (something about internet surveys I believe) I closed it right away and did a quick scan with malwarebytes to make sure nothing was wrong, and it came up empty. I'm probably being a bit paranoid here, but is this anything to really worry about?

Answer:Odd URL typo redirect...

Redirects can be something to worry about, as you have no idea what content is being hosted on the re-direct. Most popular anti virus programs, have real-time scanning, where it's constantly scanning your computer, and as soon as you're redirected to a bad website, it will block any content that's harmful to your computer. I use Eset and it does this.

Question: Microsoft Typo

Microsoft made a typo in their WinSAT application, How can we let them know about it?

Answer:Microsoft Typo

Hi Steven,

You can try contacting them by following the link below. Whether or not you will get a response I cannot say. I have managed to locate the error in the 'WinSAT.exe' file (notice the space between the letters), and you can edit it to replace the erroneous 'o' with an 'i', however by doing so you will probably cause it to fail an SFC scan. In my opinion, it is such a minor error that it is probably best left ignored.

Okay helping a friend via long distance phone calls and the random email. This is the only info I have, if someone could shed some light on this and help, we both would appreciate it. Here is the email she was able to send:

"Still messing with that damn trojan. AVG sees it and asks the usual, delete, heal, or move to vault. No matter how many times I choose delete, or heal or even move, it comes back again and again. This is what was causing my IE to try and dial out (at least, that's what I get from looking online for info on this damned thing) and share my info with the hacker. Avast does not seem to see...this file. It is saving itself (and apparently restoring itself) in my Windows folder as a dll file. prntsvr.dll to be exact.

The name AVG gives is PSW.Dumarin.C. The last thing I tried was to turn my

So I was browsing around in Windows Defender (Windows Settings > Update & Security > Windows Defender > Open Windows Defender Security Center > Virus & threat protection > Virus & threat protection settings, then scroll down to Controlled folder access.)

The sentence "Protect your files and folders from unauthorized changed by unfriendly applications" has a typo in it.
(Refer to the attached picture)

Either:
? The word "changed" has a typo in it and should be the word "changes" (with an 's' instead of a 'd'), or
? There is at least one missing word in between the words "unauthorized" & "changed"
Somebody should inform Microsoft about this typo.

But Also: I noticed that this is a new option, since the last time I was browsing around in there. What does this option exactly do? It was originally off, but I turned it On. Yet I must say that I have seen a few messages pop up in the right corner of the screen, stating that Windows Defender blocked some programs from making changes. One of them showed explorer.exe from modifying the Favorites folder without me doing anything with Favorites. Exactly what does this option do? Is it kind of like some sort of strict "Firewall"? Because if so, then I like that.

Blocks access to your files and documents by unknown apps (malware/ransomware). It's off by default because not all 'good' apps are in it's 'trusted' list. It takes a bit of fiddling to get all your apps to work after you turn it on.

Hello everyone,

I am experiencing the red typo lines when there are no typos. This happens on occasion when I'm typing emails and posting or responding to forums. It seems to occur when there is an actually typo and I correct the error. After that the entire post/email from that point on will have the red typo lines.

For example it is happening now... I'll try to post a pic for a better understanding.

Has anyone experience this as well and most importantly does anyone know of a solutions to this?

My unit is new and I have yet to DL Office 365 so I don't have Word. Not sure if that will matter.

Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hi can someone please help clear up my concerns because I accidentally interned the wrong DNS address on my new router.
After entering this typo I almost immediately that my connection was unstable especially on Linux and yesterday evening when I logged back into my router the DNS settings were set to there defaults. But I was able to surf the web kinda in Windows though it timed out often and certain webpages wouldn't even open, and now when ever I enter the correct DNS settings it disconnects from the internet.

Here's what I entered

222.67.222.222
220.67.220.220

Instead of

208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

I'm really feeling uneasy and stressed about this, any advice?

Why does stuff like this happen whenever your in poor health or any other of life's trials and complications?

Answer:Open DNS typo on router

Two things you might check:

1. In Windows, do your Network Properties have a DNS Server entry(s) that point(s) to your router (probably 192.168.1.1 or close) or do they point to the published OpenDNS IP addresses? Easy check: From an Elevated Command Prompt: ipconfig /all

2. After you corrected the DNS router entries, did you have the router do a cold reboot?

I believe you shouldn't overly stress yourself over this if you didn't make any financial transactions. But new passwords could be needed.

The Good
The application worked smoothly on Windows 8.1 Pro during our tests, without causing the operating system to hang, crash or show error messages. It carried out scan jobs very fast, thanks to cloud assistance, and it was able to remove all detected threats in our tests. CPU and RAM consumption was normal.

It supports multiple UI languages and is wrapped in an attractive and easy-to-navigate interface. First-time users may proceed with the default configuration to run scans, while those more experienced can customize options when it comes to scheduled scans, quarantine manager, log files, and Windows Explorer shell integration.

The Bad
The tool does not come equipped with some advanced virus removal settings, such as multiple scan jobs.

The Truth
By combining HitmanPro with a powerful real-time protection module against incoming threats, users can ensure an extra security level to their computers. It is simple to use and delivers great results.

The new version of SUPERAntiSpyware wasreleased earlier today, marking the sixth iteration of the application. For those who don't have a clue about it, SUPERAntiSpyware is an advanced security program designed to ensure computer privacy and prevent intruders by blocking all popular forms of spyware. It can detect other forms of malware as well, such as adware, Trojans, worms, and rootkits, but this should be viewed as an extra safety measure only, since the app was not built as an all-round antivirus application.

The free edition of SUPERAntiSpyware 6 features a redesigned interface that aims to simplify navigation for inexperienced users, touch support for tablets running Windows 8.1, a new tool that investigates various parts of the system, as well as improvements regarding the scan speed, impact on system resources, the Help menu, and general app stability.

More features are available in the SUPERAntiSpyware Professional, such as scheduled scans, a new email notifications system for receiving results for scheduled scans, real-time spyware blocking, as well as automatic checkups for software and definition updates.

The Good

The application is compatible with all Windows versions from XP to 8 and 8.1 (32-bit and 64-bit). It features multiple scanning modes and many useful system tools. The new System Investigator offers thorough information about many parts of the computer, such as autostart entries, drivers, services, classes, and web browser plugins.

Spyware authors and phishing fraudsters yanked an old scam out of the playbook Wednesday by directing malicious code at Internet users who may be prone to typing or spelling deficiencies, according to security researchers.

Finnish security firm F-Secure said they discovered an attack aimed at Web surfers attempting to land on Google's (Quote, Chart) homepage, but who may have mistyped the Web address.

Internet users who punch in "Googkle.com" are treated to a host malicious code, as the computer gets slammed with a heap of the unwanted software that is automatically downloaded and installed. The malware includes: Trojan droppers, Trojan downloaders, backdoors, a proxy Trojan and a spying Trojan. A few adware-related files are also installed, the firm said.

Memory corruption caused by an unknown driver. Please run memtest and driver verifier.

Download a copy of Memtest86 and burn the ISO to a CD using Iso Recorder or another ISO burning program.

Boot from the CD, and leave it running for at least 5 or 6 passes.

Just remember, any time Memtest reports errors, it can be either bad RAM or a bad motherboard slot.

Test the sticks individually, and if you find a good one, test it in all slots.

NAME: Googkle
ALIAS: Googkle.com

Summary

F-Secure staff has found a malicious website that utilizes a spelling error when typing the name of the popular search engine - 'Google.com'. If a user opens a malicious website, his/her computer gets hijacked - a lot of different malware gets automatically downloaded and installed: trojan droppers, trojan downloaders, backdoors, a proxy trojan and a spying trojan. Also a few adware-related files are installed.

The name of the malicious website is 'Googkle.com'. PLEASE DO NOT GO TO THIS WEBSITE! Otherwise your computer will get infected! We have reported the case to the authorities.

Detailed Description

Our investigation revealed that the whole infection starts from the 'googkle.com' website. This website, as well as a few related websites are owned by people with Russian names. Also several malicious files that are downloaded from these websites have Russian texts.

When the 'googkle.com' is opened in a browser, it shows 2 popup windows that are linked to the following websites:

www ntsearch.com
toolbarpartner.com

The 'ntsearch.com' website downloads and runs the 'pop.chm' file and the 'toolbarpartner.com' website downloads and runs the 'ddfs.chm' file. Hi,

When i type things like google.con instead of .com, i am redirected to a host of different search sites, including searchathand.com, and daplaces.com. I am pretty sure i must be infected with something, but i have ran several online and offline spyware and malware scanners and nothing seems to find a problem.

I am running Firefox version 1.5.0.6, but the problem also occurs in IE as well.

I don't like their software. I had Symantec AV Corporate Edition (from being in the military) when I ran Windows XP and it didn't work worth a crap. My parents had Norton 360 for a couple years and it was crap. It slowed their computer down to a crawl. I uninstalled it and put on MSE and they finally realized that it was Norton 360 slowing their computer down and that Windows Vista wasn't as bad as they thought with a less intrusive AV program.

Likewise, you can configure advanced settings for the mail and real-time guards. As for the firewall, you can create rules for each app, control their network access, and modify the working parameters for known networks. In addition, you can enable password protection, email notifications and a self-protection module, as well as study statistics and reports.

The real-time protection module performed excellently in our tests, as it immediately reacted while we extracted several thousands of virus samples from a password-protected archive. The scan time was very good (scanned all virus samples in roughly 5 minutes). As for the malware detection ratio, Dr.Web Anti-virus had a success rate of roughly 94.4% (identified 8951 virus samples out of 9002).

Comodo's flagship software removed from Windows software database due to licensing problems

As all our regular users know, programs awarded by Softpedia with the 100% Clean and 100% Free awards have been thoroughly checked by our team of editors and passed several tests. Aside the fact that all programs on Softpedia are scanned with world renowned security products, all awarded programs are installed by our team and checked for any spyware or adware components.

One of the concepts behind our 100% Clean award is the "click-away worry-free installation": users can click their way through a program?s setup routine without worrying that, in the end, undesired changes (such as default browser search engine) might have been made. When the installation process has ended, our editors run the program and, while taking screenshots, check the program for other income generating content such as banners or ads.

To make a long story short, we make sure the program doesn?t fall under any of the six cases mentioned on our adware definition page. Please be advised that this definition is our creation and has not been "borrowed" from an online or offline source. It was created by our team of specialists to ensure that it covers all cases that may result in the legitimate dissatisfaction of our users. Therefore, if we find adware in a program it will be listed accordingly, regardless of the license it?s listed under on the producer?s website.

I'm glad they stood by that decision, installing toolbars without permission is a big no-no! I don't have a big problem if they offer to install a toolbar during install, as long as you can opt out - as they need to make money from somewhere on a free product. But doing it by the backdoor isn't a good way to convert users.

Performance results in Softpedia tests
We put McAfee Stinger to the test on an Intel Core i5-3470 @CPU 3.20GHz with 12GB RAM, running Windows 8.1 Pro, in order to verify its virus detection capabilities, scan speed, as well as CPU and RAM consumption.

The target was a 590MB directory containing 2,000 virus sample files. To speed the scanning procedure, we tinkered with the default settings to skip the scan of processes, Windows registry, boot sectors, rootkits, subdirectories and archives content, and asked the application to directly remove identified threats. The GTI severity level was left to medium.

Our performance tests showed that McAfee Stinger had a 98.05% success ratio in detecting malware

The scan and removal job was over in 16 minutes and 13 seconds, and Stinger detected 1,961 infected files out of the 2,000 available. It immediately proceeded with their deletion, leaving behind 39 files. This means that it had a success ratio of 98.05%.

CPU and RAM consumption was low.

The Good
The software application worked smoothly on Windows 8.1 Pro during our evaluation, without hanging, crashing or popping up error messages. It is compatible with older Windows editions as well, including XP.

Wrapped in a simple-to-understand interface, McAfee Stinger enables even first-time users to easily run on-demand scans. By running the default settings, the tool looks for critical areas of the computer for malware, and it is possible to include custom locations in the search.... Read more

We're on a roll here at Softpedia when it comes to reviewing antivirus utilities. Yesterday we looked into the brand-new 2015 edition of Bitdefender Internet Security, and two days ago we tested and were pleasantly surprised by Baidu Antivirus 2014.

Today we're shifting our attention to another up-and-coming tool designed for preventing and removing malware, namely 360 Internet Security. Developed by Beijing-based company Qihoo 360, this antivirus solution uses three engines to detect and remove infected or suspicious files. Two of them belong to the developer (360 Cloud, QVM II), while the third belongs to Bitdefender. Just like Baidu, this app is packed in a pleasant and highly intuitive interface. It sports several layers of security made to prevent web-based attacks, in addition to a traces cleaner and sandbox for programs.

NOTE: 360 Internet Security was tested on 64-bit Windows 8.1 Pro.

Performance results

We tested 360 Internet Security on an Intel Core i5-3470 @CPU 3.20GHz with 12GB RAM and 500GB Seagate Barracuda ST500DM002 7200RPM, running Windows 8.1 Pro.

We submitted a collection of 8,502 virus samples (no zero-day threats) to find out how many of them are spotted and deleted by the app. Unfortunately, the real-time shield was mostly a disappointment. With default settings applied (medium protection level), the tool was completely unresponsive, even after accessing the files. We had to raise it to high level to see noteworthy response time but ... Monitoring currently running processes gives us an idea about what Windows is doing in the background and helps us spot resource-demanding applications to either change their priority or affinity, suspend them, or just terminate the ones which are not responding to regular commands. Normally, this is Windows Task Manager's job, but most skilled users do not find it resourceful enough to meet their requirements.

Developed by Sysinternals (which has been acquired by Microsoft), Process Explorer has been around for a pretty long time and has thankfully remained free along the years. Wrapped up in feather-light and portable package, this advanced task manager gives users the possibility to keep track of active processes and tweak their settings, as well as to view extensive information about CPU and RAM usage, among other components. For instance, it is possible to discover all resources used by a process which keep users from launching other programs or removing files.

NOTE: Process Explorer 16.02 was tested on 64-bit Windows 8.1 Pro.

The Good

The application worked smoothly on 64-bit Windows 8.1 Pro during our evaluation, without triggering the OS to hang, crash or pop up error messages. Owners of older operating systems may use Process Explorer as well (until Windows XP). CPU and RAM consumption was very low in our case.

Question: Filehippo

Hello everyone. I am a geriatric newbie struggling with PCs!
I used Filehippo to update software when I had XP. A hippo's head appeared in the notification area and its eyes opened on start up while it scanned for updates.

I have just updated to Windows 7. When I first install Filehippo, the icon appears in the notification area, However, when I switch off and reboot it is not there. I can, however, still run Filehippo manually from the desk top icon.
Any ideas how I can get the icon in the notification area to be visible and function even after rebooting?

Thanks

Cestode

Answer:Filehippo

Hi cestode, by default Windows 7 will hide all Icons that are not active at a time.

To get it working again try this:

Baidu Antivirus is becoming quite popular in the antivirus community, mostly thanks to its minimal impact on system performance. Last month, AV-Comparatives conducted a research to find out the most undemanding antivirus products concerning resources consumption available to date, and Baidu Antivirus scored some impressive points, gaining a top position alongside Bitdefender and Kaspersky.

We wanted to test Baidu Antivirus for ourselves to find out if it's impressive in other aspects as well, mostly malware detection ratio and scan speed. The antivirus utility puts emphasis on the fact that it will be always be free to users, and that it can run as the secondary line of defense against malware by pairing it with another av product, without software conflicts that trigger Windows stability issues. As far as the antivirus engine is concerned, Baidu uses its own av and cloud security engine, while also turning to Avira's antivirus engine for a helping hand.

NOTE: Baidu Antivirus 2014 was tested on 64-bit Windows 8.1 Pro and 64-bit Windows 7 Professional.

Performance results

We submitted 8,874 virus samples spread across 2.36GB to the test in order to evaluate Baidu's virus detection ratio. Default settings were applied. The testing machine was an Intel Core i5-3470 with CPU @3.20GHz and 12GB RAM, running Windows 8.1 Pro.

Is Softpedia a safe place to download drivers from? I have a scanner which is no longer supported by the manufacturer (HP Scanjet 4500c). I downloaded a driver for it from Softpedia and ran it through Virustotal. It got the all clear on every test except Comodo, which said "heur.suspicious". My guess is that this is a false positive, but I want to be sure before I try to install it.

Answer:Is Softpedia a safe place to download drivers from?

I always do a custom or an advanced install of anything I download from Softpedia, and from all other sources as well. I just now noticed you mentioned drivers -- it is best to get drivers directly from the manufacturers' or next best from the desktop/laptop's maker such as Dell, HP, Toshiba, Asus, Acer, etc.

The Good
The application worked smoothly on Windows 8.1 Pro during our evaluation, without hanging, crashing or popping up error messages. It contains help documentation and it is wrapped in a familiar, user-friendly interface.

It integrates a real-time guard, antivirus and antispyware, different scan modes, HIPS, enhanced exploit blocker, a self-defense mechanism against hijackers, password protection, web and email protection, along with scheduled tasks, notifications control and log files, among its notable features.

Advanced settings have the possibility to configure a rich range of scanning options to personalize the real-time guard and manual scan mode.

The Bad
We expected a better malware detection ratio from this particular program.

The Truth
With all things considered, the new version of ESET NOD32 Antivirus does not bring noteworthy changes as far as malware detection ratio is concerned. However, it brings powerful new features to the table to help users successfully fight off web-based attacks. Additional features can be explored in ESET Smart Security.

Is there a way to tell Microsoft Word to "guess" what I mean every time I make a typo? For example, I type "tsanding," and instead of changing it to "standing," it underlines it red. I know I can then right-click it, and select AutoCorrect > standing, so that, from now on, if the same exact typo arises in the future, in which I accidentally type "tsanding," it'll change it to "standing." I've thus far collected *hundreds* of specific typo corrections in this way. But that's very time-consuming, and is only a weak attempt at preventing typos I may be likely to make in the future (based on the fact that I made the exact typo at least once before). Is there any way to establish that I want Microsoft Word to go ahead and correct every single "underlined red" occurrence from now on, based on its best guess as to what I meant? (except in cases where the typo was so bad that it has no guess at all) That way, when it corrects something I *didn't* want corrected, I can then go back and add what I wanted to its dictionary, to tell it not to consider that word an accident from then on.

Answer:Is there a way to tell Microsoft Word to "guess" what I mean every time I make a typo?

Found this in the Word Help files. On the Tools menu, click AutoCorrect Options. In the Replace box, type a word or phrase that you often mistype or misspell ? for example, type usualy. In the With box, type the correct spelling of the word ? for example, type usually. Click Add. Is this what you're talking about?

The Good
It's available for Windows, Mac, Android and iOS devices. The interface blends well with the Windows 10 look and its options are easy to find. Any module can be disabled and tiles can be removed from the console.

The parental control and firewall components worked smoothly in our tests. The data shield immediately reacted when unknown programs tried to access the protected folders.

It has a comprehensive help manual that explains most parts of the program.

The Bad
As previously mentioned, Panda shows a notification message for the data shield module whenever an unknown application tries to access the protected directories, and it asks you what to do: allow or deny. However, although it doesn't inform you of this, it remembers the choice you make for that process, adds it to the permissions list, and sets its permission type. This means that it will automatically allow or deny access to that program whenever it tries to access the protected folders, until you go to the console panel to revert settings. In other words, Panda doesn't implement two options in the tray message for allowing/denying access only once and always.
The application control module worked well in our tests when denying access to programs that were on the list. However, it didn't prompt us for action whenever an unknown application tried to run, and it didn't deny access when we asked it to do this automatically, except in one case: when we tried opening Panda's vi... Panda's new Metro UI look

More and more antivirus developers have migrated to the cloud to keep their malware definitions up to date and scan computers directly from a remote server to reduce resource usage. Evidently, cloud technology has its pros and cons when it comes to security applications, but users have deemed them reliable overall.

Last week, Panda Security released version 3 for Panda Cloud Antivirus, bringing new features to the table compared to its previous edition (check out our review for Panda Cloud Antivirus 2.0). The interface has been revamped to blend in with the Metro UI look of Windows 8, tasks can be now scheduled to run automatically without user intervention, a rescue kit can be used in urgent scenarios triggered by malware infiltrations, while pen drives can be prevented from infecting PCs via autorun (previously available only in the Pro version of Panda Cloud Antivirus).

The package unwraps very quickly. However, since it is ad-supported, Panda gives users the possibility to install some browser components that it does not actually need to run normally, as well as to modify some browser settings. With minimal user intervention, these tools can be excluded from the setup.

As previously mentioned, Panda's interface has been rebuilt from scratch, favoring flat tiles with multiple colors. Thanks to an "Edit" button placed on the bottom of the frame, users may hide tiles and re-... Read more

Developer Symantec, best known for its premium antivirus products, has released a beta version yesterday for the highly-anticipated Norton Security 2015 and Norton Security 2015 with Backup. Users and testers are welcome to try out the new product before its official release and report any bugs, issues, or suggestions. The trial period lasts 7 days.

Before getting into the whole installation, however, we can notice that Symantec made some tweaks to the product names. Norton Internet Security has become Norton Security, while Norton 360 has turned into Norton Security with Backup. As for the setup pack, everything is pretty much still the same. Installation is carried out fast and users are not given the possibility to exclude components from the package.

Performance results

The moment of truth: Norton Security 2015 Beta is clearly cleaner, friendlier, and more attractive than before, putting special emphasis on adapting its features to novice users' requirements. Well, that's not really possible since the application comes bundled with numerous settings for advanced usage.

However, the part that interests us the most is performance, namely scan speed, real-time responsiveness, malware detection ratio, and impact on resource usage.

We submitted a collection of 8,502 virus samples worth 2.36GB, which did not include zero-day (dangerous) threats. The testing machine was an Intel Core i5-3470 with CPU @3.20GHz and 12GB RAM, running Windows 8.1 Pro. Default set... Read more

The Good
The tool is compatible with all popular Windows editions from XP to 8/8.1 (32- and 64-bit architecture type). It is very easy to initialize a scan job, regardless of the user's experience with virus removal tools.

Nevertheless, it is possible to adjust settings regarding the scan scope, severity, action on threat detection, and self-defense.

Virus detection ratio was excellent in our tests.

All program activity can be studied in log files.

Multiple languages are supported.

It is free to use.

The Bad
As previously mentioned in the section with performance results, we encountered multiple issues when attempting to conduct scan jobs on Windows 8.1 Pro. The app frequently popped up errors and crashed.

The estimated remaining time for scan jobs was not accurate.

RAM consumption was significant during scan tasks.

The scan job was very slow in our tests.

The Truth
Unless you're faced with a heavily malware-infected computer, Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool is a great tool to occasionally run scans, thanks to its terrific virus detection ratio results. Otherwise, you should probably look for something speedier.

Four months ago we reviewed Bitdefender Internet Security 2014. The developer has just released the 2015 version of the antivirus application, bringing in new features and improvements concerning usability. We had the opportunity to take a look at the new product a bit early and evaluate it for ourselves.
NOTE: Bitdefender Internet Security 2015 was tested on 64-bit Windows 8.1 Pro.

Performance results
A collection of 8,502 virus samples was submitted to the test, in order to verify Bitdefender's threat detection ratio. The test machine was an Intel Core i5-3470 @CPU 3.20GHz with 12GB RAM and 500GB Seagate Barracuda ST500DM002 7200RPM, running Windows 8.1 Pro. Default settings were applied. The collection did not include zero-day threats. The real-time guard was excellent! As soon as we triggered the extraction procedure of the 8,502 virus samples from the password-protected archive, Bitdefender immediately picked up on it and started eliminating files while remaining completely silent (no kind of notifications were shown). In the end, it left behind only 225 files.

In the next step, we proceeded with a contextual scan to find out whether the tool was capable of detecting and removing more files, and we were right. It detected and eliminated 207 extra files, leaving behind only 30 items. Overall, Bitdefender had a success rate of 99.6%.

The stable edition of Bitdefender Adware Removal Tool has just arrived on the market and in the Softpedia database, so users can easily download it and test it for themselves. It targets PUPs, (potentially unwanted programs), hijackers (like apps that changed the browser homepage), browser toolbar and add-ons.

This type of threats are commonly bundled in installers which should be labelled "ad-supported" and are set up on the computer along with or without user's permission. Some of their makers go to great lengths to trick users into unwillingly installing these third-party applications for the purpose of generating revenue.

Those familiar to Bitdefender are aware of its highly acclaimed antivirus lineup, so it wouldn't be a surprise for them to find out that the adware removal program is just as effective and easy to use. Actually, it's significantly simpler to handle because it doesn't contain more features than necessary: scan for adware, choose the apps to keep, and remove the unwanted files.

No installation required
The software utility is not wrapped in an installer. It consists of a single executable file that permits users to launch Bitdefender from any location on the disk or mass storage device. Unlike most antivirus programs, it does not create extra files on the disk or modify Windows registry settings, thus leaving no traces behind after removing it.

The main advantage of portable tools is that they can be kept on a pen drive in... Read more

avast! continues its series of updates and enhanced antivirus software solutions by delivering streamlined GUIs and several brand-new protection features. avast! Free Antivirus 2015 is one of the products from the antivirus editions (Pro, Internet Security and Premier) that comes with an updated interface and fresh features.

It gives you control over your home network security, supports HTTPS scans for malware and threats, as well as lets you activate a smart scan which looks for threats, updates and other issues.

The Software Updater now automatically pre-downloads software updates in the background without interfering with your work. Plus, it grabs the updates from its own servers, so the process is basically much faster.

Recover deleted files with the new edition of EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard Pro
Last year we reviewed the professional edition of EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard, a highly intuitive application designed to identify and recover deleted files, regardless of the deletion method applied: emptied Recycle Bin / Shift+Delete combo, quick or normal format, lost partition, lost partition, or damaged boot manager.

It looked quite promising but failed to meet our expectations when it came to tricky deletions, from normal format and upward. Last month the developers launched a new version for EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard, which includes a complete redesign toward looks, structure and some features, while ensuring improvements concerning the scan speed and identified files, among other aspects.

In terms of trial limitations, price and installation, version 8 remains the same. There is no expiration date attached to the trial edition, but users can only search for files and preview them. To unlock this restriction, they have to purchase the full package $69.95 / ?59.05.

The installer is fast and simple, since there are no customization settings involved. Worth mentioning is that if users plan on recovering files from the primary drive C, they should install Data Recover Wizard in another location, in order to prevent further file damage.

New interface and features

EaseUS has polished the interface and gave it a completely new look to match Windows 8 systems, thanks to elegant lines and... Read more

Hello
Has anyone noticed that this program scans and reports that Recuva 64 byte is in need of upgrading yet when I check the program it is the same version as the recommended one.
I have uninstalled it but it does the same thing.
It appears the program is not functioning as it should.
Shy of installing another update program, what should I do to rectify or check up on this?
Thank you

Answer:Filehippo Update Checker

Re: Filehippo Update Checker

I stopped using the File Hippo Update Checker a while ago; because the program does not actually scan for as many programs as some others available out there (such as Secunia, for example). Another HUGE negative was when I discovered that the Update Checker will only check programs available for download from FileHippo.com. Other than that, another (somewhat minor) problem that I had with this app was that the "Settings" link is only available while the scan runs. And finally, I also had problems with the number of false positives such as the one you experienced with Recuva.

Anyway like I said earlier, I used to use that Update Checker program; but I more recently switched to Secunia Personal Software Inspector.

After a pretty fairly prompt scan of my 1TB computer systems, a link then appears next to each item in the list which allows me quick access the available to either 'direct' updates, or I can simply go to the program itself (or the developers website) in order to to update them individually; which is my preferred method, actually. I also like the fact that the Secunia program can be set to sit in the taskbar and either run each time the computer starts or whenever I want to run it (occasionally, I mean).

Good Luck! -- COMP

What is it?
The Update Checker will scan your computer for installed software, check the versions and then send this information to FileHippo.com to see if there are any newer releases. These are then neatly displayed in your browser for you to download. Please note that not all programs are supported.

But it gets better...
The client is FREE, just over 200kb to download and only takes seconds to run! In fact on our test machines the process is complete in under 2 seconds!

What are the requirements?
The Update Checker works on any PC running Windows 8, 7, Vista, XP, 2012, 2008, 2003, 2000, ME or 98.
It requires that the Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 is installed, which you may download directly from here, or the installer will prompt and download it automatically.

Hello
This app seems not to work well with Win 10 even though I tried to make it compatible with Windows 7.
I think most higher level users do not use these 3rd party apps and check program updates individually.
I would not be able to find flash and other apps so it helps to have these.
I have Secunia which is basically for vulnerabilities and need a replacement for FileHippo which checks for out dated apps.
I have read the alternatives but find it confusing due to the caveats. SUMo lite sounds good but there is a spyware issue
.
FileHippo Update Checker is shaky but does work - it takes 2 tries then detects the outdated programs. I don't know if that is doing the PC any harm.. What is your opinion of using it?
TQ
Peter

Sumo (nork) - no relevant knowledge if I recall - is free of adware - you just have to be careful to download the right one.

The most comprehensive checker I know of. But I wouldn't want its paid-for automatic update and install feature.

Filehippo used to be ok, but limited.. now it seems to be commercially oriented displaying an ad in its GUI and doesn't connect reliably. I think you'll find Windows manages flash updates in Win 10.

Hello
Win 10 is not made for this program but being backwards compatible I thought it would be OK. I know most high level techs prefer to check each program without a 3rd party app, but I find using Secunia and the above that I stayed up to date. Since Windows Ten I gt an error, 404.
I have read about the SUMO and the caveats.
Ninite seems to be OK but some reviews were negative, regarding false positives.

Could you tell me, if you are a File Hippo Update Checker user, if you have trouble with it on Win 10?
TQ
Peter

For the update checker:
http://filehippo.com/updatechecker/

This website is one of the hidden gems of the Internet. It's an archive of all the free software with download links to the most up-to-date versions. The update checker scans your system and tells you what needs to be updated.

I run the checker about once a week or so just to stay on the cutting edge.

Answer:How many here use FileHippo and its update checker?

I do & its quite good.

OS X has a similar app, too - http://metaquark.de/appfresh/
It even recognizes games.

Is there such a thing for Windows games (other than Steam-like platforms)?

I've used the filehippo app manager without any problems for around 2 years until now, since about a week ago I get the message: "Communication Failure-check connection and settings." I have checked both using the Windows help service but without success; they tell me to re-fresh my PC but I really don't wish to do this unless it is absolutely vital, as I have so many apps and I would have to re-download W8.1. If there is an easier solution I would be grateful to hear it.

I've had the update checker for some time now with no problems. Today when I started up there was no Filehippo icon in the toolbar so I tried to check the app. but could not get it to open.  The only thing I can think of that may have affected things is the fact that yesterday I updated my browser to Firefox 13 (on the prompting of Filehippo).  Could this have suppressed the update checker somehow?   Advice appreciated.

Answer:Filehippo update checker

FileHippo is a commercial service that makes money giving people what is available for free. Why not ask them what the problem is?Here are this forum the general view is that you do not need commercial programs to do what you get for free.Do you have already in place a proven backup play? If so, this might be a goo time to use it.

I've been using Filehippo for a long time with no problems. For a few months now it's been showing AMD Catalyst Drivers 12.6 XP as an update.Trouble is, although I update it and it tells me that the update is complete, it remains in the Filehippo box....as a waiting update. Can anyone advise please?

Answer:Update remaining on Filehippo

Yes, I have the same here. But if you check the driver you actually have installed you'll find it hasn't updated - I've run it several times with the same result. In fact you don't really need it for XP and if everything is running well I wouldn't worry.
Why it won't install I don't know.
