Loud fan and unusual spikes in CPU temp

Question: Loud fan and unusual spikes in CPU temp

Brand new XPS 8910
Noticing spikes in idle temperature 50-70+ C with no load. Normal idle CPU temp is avg 38-40 C. Performed a quick scan and temp shot quickly to 80 C. In my opinion CPU should not have gotten that hot.
The fan will "take off" anywhere from 20 seconds to 2-3 minutes (with varying speed) and many times when the system is completely idle. I have done sound recording to support the sound and also screen captures of CPU & GPU temps. Been doing this from Day 1.
Anyone else experience this? Suggestions...

Preferred Solution: Loud fan and unusual spikes in CPU temp

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Loud fan and unusual spikes in CPU temp

Cheryl Awhen the system is completely idle
That doesn't rule out something running in the background that you don't see, such as anti-viral scans, Windows Indexing Service, or maybe apps phoning home to look for updates, or live tiles looking to update their content.
When the fan starts revving, open Task Manager and see what app or process is using CPU time, aside from System Idle. That might point you in the right direction
Do you have the latest version of BIOS (v1.0.9)? And the latest Intel chipset drivers, latest Intel video driver, and the latest video driver for your specific video card, etc? All listed on the Support page.

Usually while playing a game or downloading something my download / game will have a lag spike. This only happens on one laptop. They become more common while i'm using several programs at the same time, for an example while only updating a game, it will update at a steady pace while spiking occasionaly, but while using google and updating a game, the game will lag spike frequently and update at a lower speed.

This issue is quite annoying on online games where seconds matter, and i'm open to any suggestions to fix this issue. The first photo below is a photo while only updating the game. The second picture is with a game and google running at the same time.

Thanks!

HP ENVY 15 x360 PCModel: 15-u280nbother things on the bottomSN:5CD52805KBPN:L4F88EA#UUGWarranty:2y2y0yWindows 10 So recently my laptop has been making fan noises when it was operating. As soon as I turn on the device, the fan starts making its noise. (I don't think this noise was there when I first bought the laptpot 2 years ago) A few days ago the noises started to get much worse. After a while of being on (and not doing intensive stuff, just simple web browsing), the fan starts making a really loud noise. This noise sounds like the fan might be touching something else (but I haven't opened the laptop yet, I don't know if that's a good idea since I have never done that before). When I turn the laptop off (not forced, just via the shutdown button in the windows key)  as soon as the loud noise starts and I immediately start my laptop after it has been shut down; the loud noise is gone. Then after an undetermined amount of time it returns again. Anyone having the same problem or knowing how to resolve this? I am willing to open up my laptop but I'd like to know if there is a dissasembly guide I can follow.ThanksTom

Maybe someone can make sense of this. In the bios my CPU temp is 23C and when I am in windows it says it ranges anywhere from 25C to 128C overclocking or normal speed, it makes no difference. Should I be worried here or is that info inaccurate. From my limited knowledge I would think it is ready to melt down. Also aux temp is at a constant 22C whatever that means.

Just curious if its common for the 860's temps to spike suddenly under load, then fall off quickly when idle?
I was running a new WEI, and when it was under about 95% load, the temp jumped rapidly. (57c) Still within safe param's, but it seemed rather odd to me. (Then again, I AM slightly OC'd) So is this normal for the i7, or should I look at my Vtt/Bclk a little closer?

Dear Forum,

I have unfortunately been in ill health and not been in great spirits in the past two days.

Checked my email and a was informed that before I do a complete clean I should do some checks -

One being - %temp% folder - I found quite a bit in there - I was not too sure of the specifications - but being that I am running a clean install tomorrow - I thought it was interesting to show what may have been hampering my efforts.

I also was told by the Microsoft Community regarding my database enquiry - which is in an earlier thread - that it requires scanning for malware - it is a SQL Connector Server DB that appeared on my other computer.

On the up side. I still have a computer for use until tomorrow

I will be posting back on the other link regarding the clean boot. I did not realise I had so much data on my computer.

Thank you

Mel

Answer:Unusual Files in Temp Folder

Melissa, the temp folders are the scratch pad for almost every program on the computer. It can most times be cleaned out without any problems. sometimes a file will be open and you can't delete the temporary file from that program but just leave that file there and clean out the rest.

I checked with MSI Afterburner and found that there are periodic spikes in GPU temperature and usage with corresponding spikes in the core clock, memory clock, and memory usage. This is very weird since my laptop is idle and not running any programs. I checked for any unusual background processes and found nothing.

hi iliyat,

Consider using app monitoring softwares like Process Hacker to see process that's eating up system resources, debug software and detect malware in the system. This should also show hidden processes that the normal task manager can't show.

Hello,

My average CPU temps are 45 on idle and 75 when playing games. So what causes the fan being a bit more loud than usual although having normal temps? It's not that noisy and I could live with it, but I'm afraid that is something wrong with the fan.

Also, I checked PC Health Monitor and the fan speed is at 50% is ALWAYS on idle. It has been at 50% since the first day, but the noise is more noticeable now.

PD: Laptop is 1 month old.

Answer:Re: Normal CPU temp but fan is loud

I don?t think there is some problem with the cooling fan. It is controlled automatically. What you can try is to change settings for ?cooling method?.
You can find it in advanced power options > Toshiba power settings. Set it to ?Battery optimized?.
This should reduce cooling fan activity.

Please test it and post some feedback.

Hi,
I have a strange thing going on with my fan, she keeps making a loud noise despite the laptop is cool.

What is even stranger is when i play a game, the laptop become hotter of course and the fan start turning with high speed but with a normal noise, it almost disappears after 15min gaming or so..
and when i close the game the laptop starts to cool down and the fan starts to be loud.
btw, i opened the laptop, and i cleaned the every component, i disassembled the fan and cleaned it, it wasn't that dirty since the laptop is almost two years old, but i didn't renew the thermal paste in the cpu or the graphic card. but i dont think that matters since the laptop is cool when the fan is being noisy.

Hi ,

I have a strange thing going on with the fan, it makes a loud noise when the laptop is at cool temperature.

Other strange thing is when i open a demanding app like games, the laptop starts to be hotter of course and the fan became to her normal sound. when i close the game, the laptop gets cooler and the noise of the fan cameback.
i opened the laptop and i cleaned the components, such as the fan, and nothing has changed.
since the temperature is low i dont think i have to change the thermal paste in the cpu and the gpu.

tldr; loud strange noise of fan when laptop is cool, and a normal sound while opening a demanding app.

I have virtually no resources available on my vista 32 laptop, constant disk activity, and some unusual files lying around...

i don't know where to go from here. full mse scan is clean. i'm having resource trouble with almost everything i try to run.

The laptop idle upon boot using Realtemp, gives cpu core temps of 45-50c, and after just over half an hour idle, its just under 60c. Running multiple programs at once can bring it up to 70c or over if the machine has been on for a few hours, with its fan running at the max. If I attempt any cpu intensive tasks, such as 3d software, it can reach the 70s, but it rarely goes over 80c.
Speedfan on the other hand gives values of roughly 10c less for each core compared to Realtemp, and although I know it can be customized, Speedfan gives me the 'hot' icon by default for anything over 50c. I have heard that Realtemp may be giving the most accurate values, since Speedfan has not been calibrated for my particular system. After a Realtemp 10 minute sensor test, my cpu can state it is 100c or over (realtemp doesnt show values over 100, when the cpu is running at the max).
How common would anyone say these values were for a dual core bottom of the range laptop system, and would you be worried? No problems in running to date. Unfortunately I cannot be sure if the system has always given these temperatures or not, and how accurate. If the cpu really was over 100c in a Realtemp test, working the cpu to the max, I wonder how long the cpu would likely last. Thanks for any info if possible, esp if anyone has a laptop to compare temperatures. I will assume higher quality systems will never go over the 60c mark! >:0

So i listen to music on itunes and I put it on max volume, then like 20 min of me listening to music it suddenly freezes and makes a LOOOOOOOOUD sound that I can't exactly describe, its like a horn sound?? Well anyway's its very loud and the laptop gets frozen so there isn't anything I can do except press the off button to restart my laptop. Whats wrong with it? I barely got my laptop 4 months ago! And this problem only happens when I'm listening to music please help? :]]

Also I have enough ram because I barely install anything and I don't have many files like music and pictures saved on my laptop either :)

Answer:Whenever I play loud music, my laptop freezes and makes a LOUD sound??

Your computer may be overheating. Blow all the fans out with a can of compressed air. Consider a laptop cooler.
Does this happen if you listen to music through headphones?

Hi there,
When I use headphones with my Surface Pro (Win 8) I cant hear the voices in my videos - the background music/sound effects are just too loud.

How can I fix this? I have tried using the Win 8 Video player as well as VLC Player and I still get the same issue.

I have tried the headphones on my iPhone and have no problems.

It has been a long time since i've used a Windows computer (usually have a Mac) so sorry if this is a silly question.

Thanks in advance
Nathan

Answer:Voice not loud with headphones - background music too loud

You cou;d try using Winamp as it has an equalizer. Most DVDs the sound track and effects are pumped up compared to dialog. It drives me crazy, but short of demuxing, fixing the audio yourself then remuxing, trying to boost the voice frequencies is about all you can do.

I specifically bought the Toshiba Satellite (my fourth in a row) to take advantage of the lovely harmon/kardon speakers.

I find that the volume is going loud and soft all the time, specifically going softer when there appears to be something in the music (or whatever Im listening to) that would normally go louder. It's almost as if it is trying to 'normalise' the volume. Whatever is happening, it sounds terrible.

I've done a quick search on thee forums and I can't see a solution. I have seen on the greater internets (simply google Toshiba loud soft" and it pops up) someone else with the same problem.

I've messed around with the sound for hours at a time and had absolutely no luck.

I'm at my wits end. Can some please help me?

Hey everyone, I've had this laptop for a few years now and I know this hasn't always been a problem. In other topics regarding this issue, it's recommended to update your BIOS and drivers and everything. I've already done that. I think it might have been some update that started this issue. My temperature readings are reasonable in GPU-z. For some reason my laptop just starts spinning the fan really loudly, even if the room is cold. I've never felt my laptop get really hot or anything. The noise is just really loud now and it's embarassing to take it out in public. It doesn't sound BROKEN, it just sounds like when you turn on an older desktop.  My warranty has expired and I've already looked inside at the fans - they didn't appear to be damaged or dusty. I cleaned them, even used the cleaning app and the problem didn't improve at all. So basically I don't know what to do. If it's not a hardware problem, what else might it be? If it is a hardware problem, I guess I should look into getting a new laptop? The thing is, I've googled around and it seems other people have had this issue too. I haven't been hard on my laptop or anything, it just stays on my desk. Thanks

Answer:Lenovo Y40-70 Fan way too loud, quiet sometimes and suddenly gets loud

Assuming that your fans are clean and both working and the vents are clear, then you may have to simply clean the old grease, and then reapply the thermal silicone grease between the heat sink and the CPU.    I have seen where over time on laptops the heat sink compound or pad dries out and loosens, and then does not transfer heat efficiently to the heat sink; thus causing the fans to work harder to keep the CPU cool.     If you do decide to replace the compound, use a good high quality one like Artic Silver etc., make sure to clean off the old crud completely, and then just apply a nice thin layer over the entire CPU......Too much is not better.... Good Luck.

What does this mean:  C:\Users\Ted\AppData\Local\Temp\ScrC777.temp\_FRBatch.pac was not found, and how can I resolve it?
I usually see it on start up  after "sleep".
Thanks

Answer: C:\Users\Ted\AppData\Local\Temp\ScrC777.temp\_FRBatch.pac was not found

Hi TedRayWesty,
When your computer ?wake up? from ?sleep? mode, the RAM will be able to respond to a wake-up event and calling files for program. There might be a calling failure. I searched about your temp folder name and the temp file name and seems like it is not a system
file and it is called by some third party software.
Try following steps to resolve your issue
Please perform a clean boot and see if the issue still persist.
Check the other contents in ScrC777.temp folder see if you could identify the software.(seems like some Security Software or Anti-Spyware)
Uninstall it and delete the temp folder see what happens.

I know there are posts against and posts for this tweak for relocating the TMP and Temp files in Variables, but more posts say to relocate it OFF an SSD drive.

My Computer is fairly new running OS Windows 7 Premium 64Bit on a 220 gig SSD with 1 tet disk drive for data.

I created a folder on my D:\ [Disk] drive called D:\Windows Temp Files - then went to Advanced system Variables and edited the locations of both my TMP and Temp... Rebooted right away and now it's been over a month but nothing is vissable in the new folder?? [all Hidden and System files are enabled in view] My computer, updates, etc., etc., are running fine..

I checked the new Variable settings I edited and they are both still there: D:\Windows Temp Files
If I remember correctly I think the default use to be: %user profile%\appdata\local\temp < but I'm not possitive!

Can someone answer a quick question,
Thanks,
Bobkoz

Shouldn't I be seeing them in the new folder?

Is it safe to delete all the files in both the Windows TEMP folder and the tempory internet files/Contents IE5 folder?

Answer:Deleting Windows TEMP folder & Temp Int files/ IE5

Mostly yes- but sometimes those in the temp folder are in use at the current moment; reboot into safe mode and you can safely delete them all. Otherwise only delete those with a date earlier than the date of your last reboot.

Hi everybody, I would like some help!

I recently bought a new fan to help with cooling as the summer approaches. My new fan replaces my old chassis fan but is plugged in slightly differently as it is plugged into the 3 pin mother board connector (the old one was plugged into the molex and is now positioned as an intake fan at the front).

My problem is that since I've installed the new fan my computer is actually louder than before, Everest tells me that the revs for the new fan are 5114 rpm as I type this so it's clearly working too hard. I think it's working too hard because my processor fan is only idling by comparison at 1705 rpm. Which temperature does the chassis fan use to control it's speed and why has my CPU fan suddenly become lazy since I installed the new fan? Is there anything I can do to make the CPU fan work harder and take some of the burden off of the chassis fan?

Many thanks for any help!

My CPU temp is sitting at 27 deg. Celsius.

My Core temp is sitting at 57 deg. Celsius.

These are my idle temps.

The room is fairly cold.

I have a large exhaust fan, 1 intake fan from the top, one intake fan from the side, and a stock heatsink / fan on my processor.

I don't know what my base temps were before this started happening but under load my cpu comes up to about 45 - 55 and my core goes 75+.

They system freezes up when it idles at 75 for too long.

I tried cleaning off and replacing the thermal compound. Maybe needs more compound? But the CPU says that its cool....
ANY IDEAS!?!?

Temporary internet folder and windows temp folder are they the same?I have noticed that i have something like 50mb of files in my temporary folder. Can i delete these files? If i delete them will that affect the performance of the computer? When i delete temporary internet files from the internet tools options menu. (The option to keep history for a certain amount of days is set to 0 days)it shows cleared. Will some of these files be staying else where. If so how can i find and delete them? like some clips and things downloaded from the internet will they lie at some other place on the pc? Is there some method to avoid this?CheersTHE SAINT

Answer:Temp internet and windows temp folder

THE_SAINTWhat are Temporary Internet Files?Temporary Internet Files are, in fact, the cache of the Internet Explorer. This means that when you load a web page with Internet Explorer, it is saved on your computer so that if you later decide to open the same page again, it will open a lot faster. Temporary Internet Files improve speed of web browsing and also make possible so called offline browsing, which gives you the ability to open the web pages from cache even when you are not connected to the Internet. Despite all these positive things about Temporary Internet Files, they have one big drawback: they compromise your privacy. Everyone with access to your computer can look into your Temporary Internet Files folder (location of this folder is discussed here) and see the sites that you have visited in the past. You can manually delete the contents of Temporary Internet Files folder (explained here) but this will not erase all traces of the pages because a special file called Index.dat is placed in this folder and it will still preserve the names and even the dates of your first visits to many pages. Windows temp folder.....http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000225.htmHope this helps you .dl65

Hi!

I have this problem with Asus p5q3 motherboard my system temp goes up to 60-70(celsius) and cpu (intel core 2 quad q9550) temp is low as 30-40(celsius).
So how can system temp be that high?

Answer:Help system temp high and CPU temp low?!

That can't be right - I'm guessing that the reported temperature is simply wrong.
What are you using to monitor these temperatures? I suggest trying Speedfan in Windows: SpeedFan - Access temperature sensor in your computer

Ok, so core temp shows both my cores as of now at: 42 celcius

Real Temp shows both my cores as 31 celcius

Which would you say would be the trusted source here?

Answer:Real Temp v Core Temp

I don't know too much about RealTemp...I do have CoreTemp and it seems pretty accurate, considering I'm using a MacBook. Idle is always between 54 and 60.

What hardware/cooling are you using?

Have Windows XP Home Ed (Serv Pack 2)

Have a number of "Temp" directories on the C root directory (Directory names such as: "Adobe Acrobat.temp" - "Console.temp" - "Display.temp" - "DLA Writing.temp" - "McAfee.temp" - "Intel chipset.temp").

Near as I can tell these directories were created when I installed these programs, but not completely sure.

I have learned the hard way that, "Not all temp directories can or should be deleted."

Have no problem keeping these directories in the C root directory IF THEY ARE NEEDED. Otherwise want to keep HD clean, lean, mean.

TWO QUESTIONS: 1. Are these directories needed after install?

2. If NOT needed, why don't these install programs clean the garbage off the HD after install, when no longer needed? Not cleaning-up after install seems like "Malicious Indifference" to the user's best interests, after that user paid for and installed that software mfg's program. It's malicious laziness and indifference.

Hello from my understanding of tempory files you do not need these after the program has been installed. I delete these on a regular basis my-self so you should be able to. Click start, run and type %temp% and press enter, this will take you to the tempory folder.

Hope this helps

Is it a good idea to run the %temp% and c:\windows\temp commands every month or so, even if your not having any problems, just as a matter of maintenance?

Answer:%temp% and c:\windows\temp questions

I'd advise you to use something like this utility, free, we use this a lot here >>> http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/files/file/187-tfc-temp-file-cleaner-by-oldtimer/

How often to use is up to you, I would think every week or two, based on how much the computer is used.....
On some I use it almost daily and especially on machines kids here use.

http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/files/file/187-tfc-temp-file-cleaner-by-oldtimer/

TFC only cleans temp folders. TFC will not clean URL history, prefetch, or cookies. Depending on how often someone cleans their temp folders, their system hardware, and how many accounts are present, it can take anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or more. TFC will completely clear all temp files where other temp file cleaners may fail. TFC requires a reboot immediately after running. Be sure to save any unsaved work before running TFC.Click to expand...

Download TFC by OldTimer to your desktop

Please double-click TFC.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
It will close all programs when run, so make sure you have saved all your work before you begin.
Click the Start button to begin the process. Depending on how often you clean temp files, execution time should be anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or two. Let it run uninterrupted to completion.
Once it's finished it should reboot your machine. If it does not, please manually reboot the machine yo... Read more

When I flashed my bios yesterday I noticed that my cpu was somehow overclocked. It was running at 3.3ghz and 1.5v. I went in the bios returned the temps back to the stock speeds. Before the bios flash my temps according to Everest (which is 100% accurate) were around 36-36-36. Now after this whole thing, they are 36-36-46. My CPU temp is 10C higher than the core temps. I'm sure that this is the case. I've checked bios settings, cpuz showings, everest showings. Everything is as it should be except for the 46 cpu temp. I know that these temps are good, and some people would say to just leave it alone, but I want to figure this out. I've been thinking, and I thought that maybe the bios before were wrong and the temps were wrong, so actualy the showings now are the correct ones(i think is highly unlikable).

Need some help with this issue.

Answer:CPU temp higher than Core temp

I'd say don't worry about it.I have a Q6600 that has different temps for each of its 4 cores and the CPU temp is almost always 10 degrees lower. Although, a while back in my motherboard forum, there was a discussion about a new BIOS update that reports higher temps for my motherboard, so it might be possible that the new BIOS is modified to report different/more accurate temps.

Sometimes the room temp is 80-85f with the a/c on cause I live in the desert. My cpu temp is idling at about 57c and 62c under load. When the room was about 70f the cpu temp was about 7 degrees lower. I want to cut out a hole in the side of my case and install another fan to exhaust the hot air or maybe blow more room air in to get it cooler inside the case. I think the 6800xt video gpu is getting hot but I don't know how to monitor it's temp. I haven't tried thermal paste like arctic silver yet. I could cut out a hole in the top of the case too and add a fan. Any thoughts on the optimum way to lower the temps?

Answer:CPU temp versus room temp

you could start with the refreshing of your thermal paste cleaning everything as u do it (heatsink, etc). This is certainly a good start. I have a front inlet at the case front (120mm) with 2 x 120mm exhaust and this seems to maintain temps well (42C at the moment).

%TEMP% and TEMP are very different.%TEMP% is an environment variable that refers to your accounts temp folder. TEMP does not refer to an environment variable at all. Entering TEMP will locate a in your system path, probably c:\windows\temp.

Hi Guys,

Well I got a few questions that I need to get answers too, becuase a friend came over tonight and after talking about his PC woes, I got a bit worried myself, becuase of tempatures that cooked his PC, is what my PC runs at as standard. Plus it made me think about other weird issues, and maybe they are heat related.

First off, my processor! (P4 3.06Ghz - C1R, EM64T, HTT, 1MB L2, 533FSB)
Currently my computer is in the loungeroom in the corner, but it's having a issue every now and then, I could be playing a game, any for that matter, or just surfing on the internet, going along nice and smooth, then all of a sudden my screen freezes, including the mouse cursor, it's like a 'Print Screen' version of my desktop, it will stay in this state for around 3 seconds and upwards, but the average is about 5 seconds when it does happen, I start closing browser window, and any other application just to see what happens, but it doesn't appear to have any affect, It happened a few hours ago, I left my PC running after closing everything to see if it would fix itself, but it doesn't, to stop this problem, I have to physically hard restart my computer, then my PC is fine again. The only thing left I could think it could be, would be my CPU, becuase it runs at 51c on average.

Secondly, my mouse!
I have a Microsoft Basic Optical Mouse (USB) and sometimes when I turn my computer on, or do a hard restart, my mouse is not on, no power, no nothing, I have to... Read more

Now my hard drive has no more space left. I have deleted that folder several times in one day but theres no end to it filled up.

I have 3 trojans and viruses that I want to remove. My computer has been starting up really slow lately, so is the internet. It is making more sounds than ever before.

The three files are
C:\\Windows\Assembly\GAC_64\Desktop.ini
C:\\Windows\Assembly\temp\u\00000002.$ or @
C:\\Windows\Assembly\temp\u\[email protected]

Whenever BitDefender ''successfully'' removes them, they always come back.
If you need me to show you logs or something, please ask and I will do so.

Checking the Bios, My CPU is running at a Temp in the 44-50 C range and the Case temp seems to be around 36-40 C. I have a stock heat sink w/ fan and do not overlcock. I have a P4 630, an Asus P5GD2-Deluxe Mobo, and the Antec P160 case.

Any suggestions as to what I can do to lower the temps. I know they are not bad, but when just loading my machine and running the bios for 10 minutes, I don't think the CPU should be that hot.

I have 1 intake fan on the front of my case (120mm) and another out fan on the back (120 mm).

How much difference would better wire management make. (Right now Its a mess, although I tried to organize them somewhat out of the way!)

Thanks for the help.

Domer

Answer:CPU Temp and Case Temp

Well, the case temperature should not be more than 8-10C over the room temperature at idle. I prefer exhaust fans to intake fans as a rule, since they're generally more effective. I actually removed intake fans from two of my large tower systems and lowered the temperatures by 3-4C with no other changes. The indications I see are that your processor cooling is decent, but the case cooling is sub-standard.

If you remove the side cover, and the temperatures fall significantly, that's a clear indication that you need better case cooling.

Hi. I hope everyone had a Happy Easter.
This is weird and perplexes me and everyone I ask: My computer doesn't have anything that seems like a major performance problem, but it does one funny thing. I have SBC Yahoo DSL and use the modem and ethernet card they sent me, as well as a Linksys Ethernet Firewall Router. (I only have one computer; the router is just for security.) What's weird is that every time I boot my computer, there is a better-than 50% chance that there will be no Internet connection. When I look in Control Panel under Network Connections, there is no ethernet card listed except one called "1394 Connection". I don't know what that is, maybe something built in to the motherboard, but it's not my ethernet card. I have to shut down and reboot, maybe several times, before I see another item listed called: "Local Area Connection 6" or: "Local Area Connection 7". Then I can connect just fine. What's going on here? Bad ehternet card drivers was my first thought, but then I figured in that case the card would show up in the Control Panel or Hardware Manager but wouldn't work right, instead of not even showing up as if it's not there.
Thanks for any suggestions. It's a major pain to boot up, shut down, reboot again, then repeat as many times as necessary.

Heeey.I was at a LAN party once, and i accidently pulled out my power plug from the extension cable.  Comp shuts down (obvi), then i try to reboot it, nothing happens.  I let it sit there for about 30 minutes, then i try to boot it up again ,and it boots up.  Now, the comp is the slowest POS ever.  Like, performance is soo bad its horrible (i ran warcraft III on the lowest settings and i got about 15-40 fps.)So i formatted comp, reinstalled vista.  never been the same as it used to be.  Its a lot better now, but it still lags a lot for some reason.  For example, this game (dota) usually takes me 6 seconds to load in the loading screen, now it takes me 9 (its a big difference FYI).Sooo... any1 have any ideas on how to solve for this if there is a solution.  My rig isAMD Phenom II X4 9402x ATI Radeon 4870 X2 XFX in crossfire.4 gigs 1066 mhz ramDKA790GX Platinum mobo

I really don't think this is a malware booby trap; but, I sure would like to know if anyone can explain what this is and whether anyone else has run into it.

I was attempting a search on e-bay and got this:

Answer:Got an unusual pop-up on e-bay--what is this?

Apparently that happens when you ask it to sort by price + shipping. Is that what you did?

That's all I have found but it does appear to be legit.

Question: something unusual

I have just built a brand new computer ... installed XP pro and several applications on it and suddenly I am finding that the System32 folder is opening when the computer boots up ... I have checked the registry entries for any NULL entries such as "" or others and can find nothing like that .. anyone got any ideas why this might be happening ?? as I said it is a brand new computer and a brand new XP installation ..

Answer:something unusual

G'Day vampyr2005,

This might sound a bit strange doing this on a 'new' installation, but it is possible that some files may have 'misinstalled', so I suggest you try this....

Insert your Xp CD [Hold the Shift key to prevent it from starting].
Go Start > Run > type in sfc /scannow [Please note the space between the sfc and /], and let it run.
This is the System File Checker, it will ensure that all Windows? system files are in their right places, and if not, replace them from the CD. This procedure takes about 15-20 minutes to complete, and whilst its doing its thing, its advisable not to do any other work on the computer.
During the operation sfc might ask for the Xp CD; in this case, just hit 'retry' and leave it. Once finished, remove the CD and reboot the computer, and all should be back to normal.

If not, post back, and we'll delve deeper into it.

Have XP system. This question is twofold. First for Firefox.Often get spikes. Task MGR. shows it's from Firefox exe.though sometimes it's from ccSvcHst.exe. It also vacillates between System Idle as well. Any suggestions? Second, when I use Chrome, Task MGR. shows numerous chrome.exes even though I have only opened one page and tab. It, too, spikes in the same manner. Any suggestions? Please give specific steps. Thanks....Sleeper4

My problem is that certain games that seem to require a lot of processing power like crysis (btw, crysis 2 runs fine?!?!), arma 2, blacklight retribution, etc. run at low fps. The thing is, my system specs are a little sketchy. I have a semi-high-end video card, but also a weak processor:

OS Version: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium, Service Pack 1, 64 bit
Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) II X2 215 Processor, AMD64 Family 16 Model 6
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 550 Ti, 1024 Mb

Obviously, not every game should run at 60 fps maxed out settings with these specs. The thing is, while playing arma 2 for example, I never get above 30 fps and it's almost always around 20-22. I've heard that it's a poorly optimized game and requires a high end processor, so maybe that's just the problem (trying to narrow things down where I can). When I play blacklight, I'll sometimes get 50 fps solid, but depending where I'm looking sometimes it drops to 30-35. So basically games that do tend to lag, only really run a low fps depending what is going on in the game. So what's the bottleneck here? Is that most likely just my processor? Am I just going to have to deal with frequent low fps unless I get a new processor? Hopefully this isn't too silly of a question. Any help would be appreciated.

Oh and 1 more thing, some games I have the RECOMMENDED requirements for according to this tool

Question: Spikes in CPU

Hi everybody. This is my first post, generally I suffice with reading the forums and using the info I find to fix my problem. But this time is different. I tried many suggested solutions.

Basically, I bought a laptop 4 weeks ago- Dell Inspiron 15 5000 Series with i5 processor. Within couple of days I started noticing sudden spikes in cpu usage. Considering that the laptop had been with me only for couple of days and no dodgy websites opened, or programs downloaded, I dont believe this could be a virus issue. I even re-installed windows again (btw it is windows 10). but problem continued.
Then I figured out that this spike is driven by 'System' (NT Kernel and System). Furthermore, process explorer shows that it is specifically driven by ntoskrnl.exe!RtlSidHashInitialize+0x1450  (see photo)
I am not an IT guy, but I did my best trying to do what solutions were offered online, including disabling .NET frameworks, updating some of the drivers (network adapter driver for example), run Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth  etc. but nothing seems to be working.
Few more observations that may help you  with solution:
- Spikes in CPU results in lagging cursor/typing, or some weird noise while playing videos.
- I feel like this happens when I open few things at the same time (by this I mean few tabs in chrome and couple of apps, such as word/excel- nothing major). .
- After restarting the issue goes away for a while and then come... Read more

Hello techies, I have a question for all you there that are smarter than me when it comes to computers, I have a computer that I built about 3-4 years ago, it has a Athlon XP 1800+ CPU, 1Gb of ram, and a ATI Radeon 9200.

Now, when I moved from Cali to washington I plugged it in and started her up, she booted fine, but when windows was running she idled at 8-11% system usage, and was acting very much like a computer that was plugged into a low power source(acting laggy for no aparent reason).

Well, since it was a backup computer I didnt think anything of it, left it be, well I moved into my new house built only a few years back and I plug her in and have the same problem...

I start up my World Of warcraft Game and the put me between 68-88% idle with game open then I would do an action in the game and the processor usage spikes down to 1% then comes back up, at the same time my game freezes for a second(enough to be annoying) and then the % goes back up to proper percentage. I think that my CPU is going bad, can anyone give me some insight on what my problem is?

When I run my computer, it usually works fine. If I use any kind of game, or watch a movie or TV show eventually I will experience spikes of audio and video stutter on my computer. It's very frustrating and once it begins it won't stop until I reboot. This is the only temporary solution I have.

The picture below is my resource monitor. The culprit process is "System" I have no idea what it does or why it's causing me trouble. Can anyone offer some insight?

Question: Lag spikes

Hi,

So I have two PC's in my house, both use the wireless internet from a router we have (and my laptop sometimes uses that internet too). It's a great internet rarely lags or dc's. Me and my brothers play games which are on both PC's, and when we play them on one, it always lags (all the games lag on that PC) whereas on the other there is never any lag.

The reason I'm writing here is to ask how I can perhaps stop this lag. They're using the same internet, (at this point I should say I'm NOT very computer literate) they both have 2GB Ram which may be a bit low but seems perfectly sufficient on one PC, but not the other.. so i'm not sure what the problem is. I think the slower PC does have a more powerful graphics card so not sure whether it needs something else to support that..

any help welcome thanks!

Question: Lag spikes

Hello. I've been noticing this for a few weeks now. When I play my java based game, at first it is pretty smooth, with a CPU usage of 60-70% with java using around 240,000kb of memory. Every 2 minutes or so, the CPU usage jumps to 80-100%.

Here are my observations:

At first, Java.exe is the only process consuming alot of cpu ( around 50-60 ) and all my other processes ( I usually have 69 processes ) consume around 0-10 cpu, mostly around 0. As the lag spike starts, I see some of my other processes start to gain cpu ( ccscvhost, google chrome, dwm )

Timeline:

Java.exe is using 50-60 cpu, the rest of the processes stay around 0-1. CPU usage stays at 60-70%.
When the lag starts, Java.exe loses around 10 or 20 CPU, and my other processes which are running at that time gains around 20 CPU each, adding up to 100% CPU usage.
The lag usually settles down after 1 minute and then starts over.

My System Info:

Hp Pavillion dv7 laptop
Windows vista 64bit SP1
4 gb ram
ATI radeon hd 3200
AMD Turion x2 dual-core CPU 2.1 GHZ
Default system BIOS

Things I have tried, but to no avial:

- I canceled all my startup programs ( msconfig )
- I used CC cleaner, it cleared up 4 GB
- I downloaded Malware-Byte's Anti-Malware and updated, then ran a quick scan
- I updated Windows Vista

Other info:

- This problem only happens when I run Java
- At the moment, I am only running AIM and Google Chrome: The CPU usage is at 2-10%

Could it possibly be the graphic card temperature?

Answer:Lag Spikes

Yes, can be the temp, most likely memory.
Take a memory test, using memtest86.
Check the temps with suitable software.

Ok heres my problem...my cpu usage is at 20-60% constant but the idle is at 99%...I know what the problem is...its my d-link wireless card.
If I touch the base of the antena the spike stops and I get 0-2 % cpu usage....if I take the antena off I get 0-2% cpu usages but I also get a awful signal...im guessing this has something to do with the antena being grounded or not grounded?...how would I fix this?

Question: CPU Spikes

Ok First off
Im running a P4 2.8ghz 533
with 2 256 sticks of pc3200 corsair ram
and 1 256 stick of pc 2700 corsair
Ive a old asus board im not sure of the number
a ati radeon 9800pro
a maxtor 40 gig hd
and a Audigy 2 zs
...the mother board ram speed is supposed to be a max of 2700 so that is one problem..but the computer runs.

So heres my problem.. I fire up my computer with windows xp and it runs fairly smooth with 0-7% cpu usage for about 3 minutes, then it jumps up to about 11-15% cpu usage , then up to 20-40 % cpu usage. All this time it says its idle is 99%
I have done virus scans, spyware scans, ic ran msconfig, ive checked for progams sucking up cpu usage, and ive updated all my drivers. Im running service pack 1, and I cant figure out what my problem is. Is it that im running pc3200 ram...or is there some other reason? Will someone please help, i'd love to get this computer fixed so it dosent crap out, I kinda need it for college.

Answer:CPU Spikes

Are you sure it is cpu usage, and not memory usage? Since you said that SYSTEM IDLE is at 99%, I can't see that the cpu is using much. That idle basically states that you have cpu power for other apps/services....

At this point i have been trying to find the cause for my cpu spikes for a month and a half now and no no avail. There is nothing out of the ordinary going on in the task manager processes. The only thing with a high cpu usages is the System Idle Process. on top of it all it only seems to happen in Windows and not Linux(dual boot system) and it only happens when the wireless is on. The spikes go away temporarly when i reinstall the wireless driver. Im at a loss here, any help will be greatly appreciated.

-Acer Aspire 4730Z laptop
-Intel Pentium Dual Core CPU T3400 2.16GHz
-2 GB of DDR2 667 MHz memory
-Mobile Intel® GL40 Express Chipset with integrated 3D graphics
-Ralink 802.11n Wireless LAN Card

Thank you in advance

Answer:Need help with CPU Spikes

Spikes are normal in any system as processes start and stop. Is this causing some sort of problem?

Slow down the refresh rate in Task Manager to have more time to observe changes. System Idle Process should always be as high as possible, of course.

Question: Lag spikes.

I get these lag spikes lasting 10-20 seconds, about every 20 min.

I did a scan with AVG, and it detects a Trojan, and then it tells me it fixed the problem and I just need to reboot. Doesn't remove the problem though, and I can keep scanning and it keeps showing up.

Whenever I'm watching a movie on Hulu, ABC.com or NBC.com my CPU usage will spike to 100% for about 15-20 seconds and it will happen every minute or so. It causes the video but NOT the audio to lag severely. This only happens when the videos are playing in full screen mode, or when opened and maximized in a separate window. The problem does not accrue when playing videos using Windows Media Player or VLC.
The only other instance where this happens consistently is while playing games, most recent game i've experienced it with is with Dragon Age: Origins, even when the gfx settings are set at bare minimum.
When I open task manager, if i'm watching a movie via internet it will be the browser using 95-99% of the CPU, this is consistent with I.E. Firefox, and Google Chrome. If I'm playing a game it will be the game using 95-99% of CPU usage, consistent with a variety of games, with Diablo II being the only exception.

System Information:
HP Pavilion dv4
Windows Vista x64
AMD Turion X2 Ultra x64
ATI Radeon HD 3200
4 Gigs Ram

Recently updated Catalyst Drivers (made no difference)
All windows updates to date are installed.

I have been looking all over forums for weeks trying to find a solution to this issue and have had no success. So please if anyone knows how to solve this issue or can direct me to a thread with a resolution I would be forever grateful.

Answer:100% CPU Spikes, Please help me.

Update: I downloaded Process Explorer, learned that "fmodex.dll" is the file which is causing the spikes in CPU usage? Any idea's on how to reslove this?

Answer:Lag spikes...

Re: WireLess networking lag spikes

Check to see if there's a firmware upgrade for your router, and driver updates for your wireless nic.

Cat5 cable can go up to 100m (~330ft) without major attenuation.

Good luck,

-K

Hi ivxx420 From what I can see, your Opera browser is taking all your CPU. Is it possible to check the Show processes from all users at the bottom of the Task Manager, then click once on the CPU column to order the CPU usage of the processes from highest to lowest? Once done, take a screenshot and post it here. In addition, I would like you to follow the instructions below please.MiniToolBoxDownload MiniToolBox and move the executable file to your Desktop;Execute MiniToolBox and check the following options:List Installed Programs;List Last 10 Event Viewer Errors;List Devices - Only Problems;List Users, Partitions and Memory size;Once this is done, click on Go and wait for the scan to complete;Once the scan is complete, a log will open. Please copy/paste the content of the output log in your next reply;Speccy - Publish a snapshotFollow the instructions below to download and install Speccy, then to publish a snapshot of your system information:Download and install Speccy from Piriform (the download will start automatically a few seconds after clicking on the Speccy link);Note: You can opt-out the Google Toolbar installation if you want;Once Speccy is installed, launch the program and give it a good minute to load all your system information; After that, click on the File menu in the top left corner, and select Publish Snapshot;A window will appear asking you to confirm your decision to publish a snapshot. Hello all, Sorry if this is the wrong section to post this in,

I need some help with my Wireless Network. So, whenever I'm using my WiFi, and I'm playing a game, (like e.g. Call of Duty 4) I'm getting lag spikes every 60 seconds or so. When I use my LAN Ethernet Cable, everything just works fine.
I'm sure it is not my PC, but my router or something that has to do with my router, because, when I'm at home, and I use my WiFi there, everything works fine and I get no lag spikes at all.
My router is a NETGEAR WNR3500. I have checked other wireless networks in the area, to see if they are interfering with my network. I saw this one wireless network that is on channel 6, like mine, so I changed the channel to 11, and the problem still occurs. Provider is Comcast.

What could be wrong?
Thanks
