How would I add an image to the background of the details pane? The ones highlighted in the screenshot I attached.
More repliesI recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.
I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)
How can I re-associate .mp4 files with video details displaying in the Details Pane? After installing the K-lite codecs pack, my mp4's all began displaying in the details pane as audio files (Album, Artist etc) and no longer displays the important video default details (size, frame height, bitrate etc). I assume it was because of incorrectly associating file types when installing the codecs (even though wmv's, avi's are still correct), so I uninstalled the codecs but the Details categories remain for typical audio files. I've exhausted The Google and I'm stumped... any help? (Win7, 32-bit with VLC as my default player) Thanks!

how can I get my search results to list the address as it exists, rather than with favoritism for the subfolder an item was found in,
e.g.,
I want

rather than being shown
"sub sub (c:\folder\sub folder)"
it makes things much easier to navigate.
Windows 7 now calls the useful style "Folder path". Right-click in the header row, choose "More", and choose "Folder path".
I would like to find one person who thinks the current "Folder" style used in Win7 is useful. It's totally stupid. Or to put it in a way a Win 7 programmer apparently likes: stupid (It's totally).
I can't believe no one provided an answer to your question in nine months. This problem was killing me, so after an hour of searches without finding the answer, and then finding the answer by myself, I thought I'd add this for others who find this through a google search.
I have found every change in Win7 to be a hindrance to my work.

I think you are asking Windows Explorer to do more than it is intended to do.Try using infranview to view the folder. Get infranview at the link below.http://www.irfanview.com/

A long story short is that my cat ran over my keyboard and now all my folders have a preview/details pane I can't get rid of. I read it could be removed by going to Folder Options, General, Use Classic View. Well guess what, there is no classic view! I included two screenshots to show my problem.

5 more repliesA fairly simple question:
Has anyone tried to (or found a third party app) that can put the details pane back to the bottom of the File Explorer windows, like it was in 7. It was of great use to me when reading tags and other information. In 8, it just takes needless width space from the windows.
Shell32.dll but modifyng it crashes windows 8 (at least in CP/RP), havent tried in RTM yet.
15 more repliesHow can I change the color of details pane in Windows Explorer? I'm trying to modify Soft7 visual style to suite my needs.. I've found allmost everything else, but I can't find the way to change this. Is it a bitmap in shellstyle.dll, msstyles, or something else?
I just did a reinstall of XP Pro and am having trouble with video files being "in use" when trying to move/delete them (only a several second lag, but it is annoying me). It has to do with a preview being generated in the details pane in the bottom left corner of Explorer. I eventually figured out how to turn off the preview option on my last install but have forgotten how I did it. Under folder options I have "do not cache thumbnails" unchecked. Is this the setting I need to change? Or is it somewhere else? It seems to me I need an option to not show a preview in the details pane.
Thanks for any suggestions.
I haven't done an XP install, but I have had problems like yours. Here is how I fix them without reinstalling, in case it may help? (The instructions may be different for XP.)
Thumbnails are used as icons when the folder is in Thumbnail view. This is usually not the problem, since they are usually cached after the first time. I turn them off by getting the Properties window for that folder. (I just go to the parent folder and right-click on the folder there, then choose Properties.) Then in one of the tabs, I find the Enable thumbnail view option and uncheck it. But, again, this is probably not the problem.
The preview thumbnail (actually, the whole details pane) can be turned off by unchecking View as Web Page in the View menu in one folder. Or, you can turn it off for all folders by going to View menu > Folder Options > General tab > choose Custom, then click the Settings button and in the View Web Content in Folders section, choose Only for folders where I select "as Web Page" [View menu]
If I want the details pane, but not the preview, I edit the HTML of the window. I don't know if you want to try this, it can be confusing, but here's what I do, just in case:
I right-click on the detail pane (or you can use the View menu), and click Customize this Folder... then choose create or edit HTML document. This allows me to customize that details pane. To remove only the worst case files from the preview, I see if I can find "var w... Read more

How to Customize the Details Pane in Windows 10
1 more repliesHello! I would like to somehow know how to move the details pane from bottom to the top, like this:
Thank you!
I have a video folder that I would like organize by genre (i.e.: action, drama, comedy, etc.) but Windows isn't allowing me to add or change existing file details.
I consulted this document and realized the following applies to my situation.

Some properties can't be added or changed. In those cases, clicking next to the value won't change its appearance.
Is there a work-around? (e.g.:Additional software)
Hello,
Click Here to download abcAVI, save it to your desktop, once download is complete run installer => Open up abcAVI => On the top menu bar the first icon will let you select one movie file to edit, the second icon will allow you to select a whole directory to edit all movie files in it, once in the movie just go down to Genre and choose the one you would like or type in your own => Click Save once done

is there anyway i can display my details panel on the bottom ? like it used to on win 7?
because windows 10 shows it on right hand side, but it's just taking too much of the space on my screen, it's really inconvenient when you open 2 folders and snap to sides and modify files.
Was just thinking the same thing. Here is how my Win7 workstation looks (about perfect to me! Note Classic Explorer is also running).
...and in Win10. The preview thumbnail image in the details pane cannot be resized (larger).

Recently I was trying to add comments to movie folders so that i can keep a brief description about it when i click on it. It was easy to add comment then i had a bit trouble to get the comment getting displayed in the details pane...after playing with the registry for a while i got that solved as well.
Now I ended up with a problem where the comment being displayed eds with just some 3 or 4 words with the remaining given in dots (...) and I get a full display of it when i hover the mouse over it, which obviously goes way in 5 seconds or so.
So what i need is to find a way to expand what ever that is shown in the details pane so that it shows the entire content in consecutive lines without being restricted to one line (without having to hover a mouse)
You might get a picture of it if you have a small details pane on the right and make it show your processor details when you open thisPC.
This is what i mean, if no one gets it :P
1 more repliesHi,
please see my screenshot, my details pane is not showing any codec information.
I had to reinstall after a windows 10 update killed my computer (update loop bsod - I can't believe updates are stilling crashing computers).
before the details pane use to show codec info like:

how do I get it to show?
One way is to use this
File Metadata - Home
and use its file association manager to enable it for extensions you're interested in.

Hello.
I've been trying to re-organize my photo collection. Previously, I had been using Windows Live Photo Gallery to tag my photos, and admittedly it was convenient. Recently, though, the program has gone on the fritz to where thumbnails aren't loading so it's harder to differentiate photos simply by the file name in cases where I have a lot of photos of the same group or folder. While I've tried a lot of troubleshooting to get the thumbnails to load, and would gladly take advice on that issue, in the meantime I'm trying to accomplish the same thing using the details pane in explorer.
When I highlight a photo right now, most file types load the date stamp, tags, rating, author(s) and comments properties in the details pane. However, I'd like to edit the people properties so I can tag individuals in the photos. I have not seen a way to easily do that short of using other software (such as Photo Gallery).
Does anyone know if there's a way to do this through explorer or will it require a separate application?
You are talking about edit Exif data. There are programs out there that allow you to do that.
4 more repliesThe details pane used to show a thumbnail preview of the first page of Adobe Acrobat documents when I selected the file. This was extremely helpful to me due to the nature of how I file these documents, as I didn't have to open the files - I only had to select them. As of this morning, the details pane only shows the name of the document and does not display a thumbnail preview of the first page. How do I fix this? Thank you!!
Does anyone know how to edit the details that appear at the bottom of the screen when you select a file? I'm not talking about the details that you can change when you select view but the one at the very bottom of the screen.
Thank you
Try this:

Once installed, go to the details tab of a files properties, and you can edit them as you wish, which will also appear at the bottom of Windows Explorer.
Is there any way to permanently remove or disable all of the various "views" in the Windows 7 Navigation Pane *except* for Details? If a subdirectory contains audio files I *never* want to see "Album" or "Artist" or any of the rest of that garbage. If the subdirectory contains an image file I *never* want to see a thumbnail of images. If I need more information about a file I'll right click on it and select Properties, thankyewverymuch!
In short, when I click anywhere in the left or right panel in the Navigation Pane I never want to see *ANYTHING* except the file name, type, size, and date modified. If it isn't a file (e.g. Network, etc.) just show me a computer or device name, not some massive image of a router or other waste of my time.

I have this problem with the vista details pane and I have not been able to find any solution. I have Windows Vista 32 bit Home Premium version. The problem is that:
1. My details pane is missing a lot of properties/tags . Only ones that are appearing are file date, file name, dated created.
2. When I go into a MP3 folder, same thing happens as I described in 1. Just the 4 tags appear and I don?t get any other tags that used to be there like artist name, rating, title, etc.
3. I cannot edit any Tag in the details pane. When everthing was working fine, I could go in the MP3 folder , I could edit the title, ratings etc. and Save it. But now I can?t do anything, the save button does not appear and the tags don?t go in edit mode.
Up till now I have tried the following solutions:
1. I have reset all the folder options in Vista by going to Folders/tools/reset defaults. (did not work)
2. After resetting the folders, I have also turned on the details pane option under Organize/Layout and the details under the Views. (did not work)
3. Under View, in the tool bar, I went to Customize This Folder and chose the Music Folder Option, All Items etc. (did not work)
4. Then on the Microsoft site, I found this solution ? Open Documents by clicking the Start button , and then clicking Documents., and click a file to apply properties. Then In the Details pane at the bottom of the folder window, click the property that you want to change, type the new property in the Tags.? But it did not work ei... Read more

In Windows 8.1, I want to customize the properties displayed in the Details Pane for ALL of my MP3s . (That is, I do not mean removing/modifying the properties on an individual MP3/music file. I mean choosing what gets displayed in the Details Pane for all music files.)
In XP (which I love and miss), I do believe the Details Pane could be customized easily, but I see no way to do that in 8.1. For example, I want to display Artist, Album, Year, Track #, Size, and Duration ONLY. How do I remove Rating, Genre, Title, etc.
Also, can I remove the "breadcrumbs" (...) and have the full line displayed? In XP, everything was displayed. Now you have to hover over something to see it. How is that better?
I miss XP's file manager!

I was wondering if you know if there is a way to improve Vista's Video Preview on the Details Pane.
The problem I see is that Vista shows the very 1st second of video, while Windows 7 shows the 4th. That's why many of the video previews on the details pane show a black screen on vista instead of actual video.
If anyone else has the answer, I will be really grateful.
I guess you could edit that through the registry, but believe me, lol, to be honest Idk...

Check that your files haven't suddenly become "Read-only".
Also try running CHKDSK to check the drive.
After I've used one of my external HDDs at TAFE, my PC claims that it is "Read-only" and it takes several CHKDSK commands to fix the problem.
Of course after CHKDSK is finished, it says that there weren't any problems.
I do not want to see a large space to the right of my photos & files in file explorer. I want to see the full space filled with them. I want to make some specific changes to the default Preview Details string for picture files in Windows Explorer. I have found an excellent write-up on how to edit that string using regedit, but the author was only interested in the specific around music. In the attached picture, I show the file properties/attributes that I am interested in placing in the Detail Pane. The current edited string is shown below.

As you can see, some work, others don't. Is there a comprehensive list of these properties and their syntax in the form

Hi,
I must apologize in advance for any forthcoming ignorance, as I am a forum newbie. Using Win8.1, I am trying to relocate the Details Pane in Explorer from the space wasting right side to the well fitting & familiar bottom.
Fix I found is here: How To Move Details Pane To The Bottom In Windows 8.1 File Explorer

It has some other features but the one you are searching for is one of them. It doesn't always make the hack but it is much safer than patching the shell32.dll
I would like to see more audio details in win10 file explorer preview pane, especially the channels and bitrate for movies in the *.mkv format. (I would like to see if they include DTS 5.1, languages, subtittles etc.)
Before the latest creators update, this information was shown in the preview pane (along other video-details). Now I can't get it back. Icaros doesn't seem to help in this case.
What can I do?
Try MediaTab (free)

Hi, I just re-installed windows 7 on my desktop pc and have a question about the settings of the details pane in windows explorer (the one that appears and the bottom when you select a file). Previously when I selected video files (.mp4, .avi and .mkv) I would get the details at the bottom, the video frame width and height, size of file etc.. but since I reinstalled I don't get these details when I select video files. I know its only a small problem but I work with video files a lot and have gotten used to seeing the resolution of files without having to open them. Does anyone know how I can get the details pane to show these details again? At the moment it only displays the video size, name and state.
Here is a screen-shot of the details pane for a selected .mkv video file on my laptop, this is what I want it to display on my pc.
Is the folder set as a "Video" type?
Look at the properties of the folder, and there you will see a drop down list for the type.
I googled the problem and NOTHING!!!!! many information NO LONGER is displayed in my details pane in Windows Explorer!!!!!! song length is one of them gone missing (& total length if multiple files are selected) and I use that frequently!!!!! it ONLY shows basic information now such as artist, title, album, and genre!!! but total length is GONE!!! also MANY UNRELATED INFORMATION is now in the details pane for media files!!!!!!! mood of music has been added (never heard of that tag), song rating, and composer now have been added!!!! it even displays ALL THIS SAME INFORMATION for WAV files when it used to be ONLY file size and length for WAV files!!!!!!! WAV is NOT capable of tags so I don't know why Windows Explorer shows this information for WAV files!!!!!!
HOW DO I GET MY DETAILS PANE BACK TO NORMAL???????
Can you post a screen shot of what you are seeing?

Greetings,
First of all, I'm a complete noob at customizing, so please bear with me.
I've been searching for a way to change the Windows Explorer navigation (folder) pane background colour, the panel that (by default) can be found on the left and shows things like Favourites, Libraries etc. The default colour is white, and lately it has started to hurt my eyes more and faster than it did before. That's why I would like to change it to grey.
I've 'already' managed to do this for the reading pane by editing the shellstyle.dll file (C:\Windows\Resources\Themes\Aero\Shell\NormalColor), but I cannot find any information on how to do this for the navigation pane. That is, I found some topics but most of the time the answers point towards downloading/buying a program that can do it, or needing to send some files to a helpful person who can change it him/herself, and by doing so probably avoid a lot of explaining, which of course I can understand. However, I would like to do this myself so that in the future I'll no longer have to rely on someone else to change that colour. Furthermore, I'm not interested in any other scheme than the standard Aero (yet...) so I would like to do this without downloading/buying any program (which I'll most likely never use again after I changed that one colour - but you never know, of course).
So, where can I find the code for the background colour? Can it be found in the shellstyle.dll file as well? Do I need to look somewhere else? It doesn... Read more

Hello, I was wondering about the possibility to increase the images thumbnail size on the details pane in file explorer, and to make the panel maller than allowed by default. Is it possible?
Thank you for your help
There seems to be a minimum size which is pre-defined, you cannot make it smaller. The preview and details pane size is set by the DetailsContainerSizer binary value in the Registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Modules\GlobalSettings\Sizer
I do not know of way to make the thumbnail larger in the details pane. It is larger in the preview pane.

Background: I've had this computer for almost a year, and have never experienced a problem with it before yesterday.
My Specs: i5-4670 @ 3.4GHz, Adata XPG V2 8GB DDR3 1600, Gigabyte GA-Z87-HD3, Thermaltake Smart Series 750w PSU, NVIDIA GTX 760 2GB, and I run Windows 7.
Note: The main problem at this point is that when I load my computer, the only thing that shows is my desktop wallpaper and nothing else - icons, taskbar, etc. don't load. When I try to Ctrl+Alt+Del, the screen goes black and I hit either spacebar or Enter to get back to the unresponsive desktop wallpaper screen once again.
The problem all started when I attempted to boot up the computer one morning, the lights turned on for a split second and immediately turned off once again. After searching Google thoroughly, it appeared as if this was the computer attempting to stop from short circuiting. I personally have no experience with computer hardware whatsoever, so I was baffled as to what to do, as the computer would not start up anymore. My father simply unplugged everything, took a look inside of the computer, switched on something that appeared to be an alternate on/off thinger, and hooked it up once again. This time, the computer loaded up.

Your BIOS and/or graphics card is interferring or incompatible with the Windows Updates. Roll back (uninstall) to before the Windows updates and disable windows automatic download and install udpates. Try updating your graphics card and display drivers.
If Ctrl_alt+Del doesnt work, try hitting the shift key five times, if not try booting in safe mode with networking and do a malware bytes scan.
If you can get a program to start, try this Prevx fix
Enter the command: ”C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe” “
Hey,
I have a question about the details pane.
Can I add a few more parameters to the little preview window on the right? (For music like BPM, Publisher etc)

Having decided to use Vista's Mail/Contacts/Calendar, I was quite excited to see that when I hovered the mouse over the Extra Large Icon of a contact, all of his details appeared in the right hand side preview panel ...... for a moment!
Now that capability has disappeared altogether!
I have checked under Organize x Layout that the Preview Panel is checked but it remains blank all the time!
What have I (it) done to remove this handy feature?
........... but there's more ................. the contact's name comes up say michael smith.contact but I only want Michael Smith to show (not the word "contact").
When I try to rename it to a straight Michael Smith, Vista gets all upset and starts tellimg me that it probably won't work anymore if I persist!!
There's gotta be a way to rename these contacts!
File "Description" data fields etc. no longer appear in the Windows Explorer "Details" pane. Please see attachment.
Operating system is Windows Vista Home Premium, Version 6.0.6002, Service Pack 2, Build 6002.
ID3 tag data can be edited using MP3Tag editor, but is no longer available for edit in the Windows Explorer "Details" pane.
Any advice about how to restore the data fields in the Windows Explorer "Details" pane would be appreciated.
I had to manually find all related files to OE6 to delete it so it would reinstall. Then the updates. Now nothing shows up on the preview pane or when I open the email. I can use Outlook instead but what is wrong? The only view of the message is in properties: details: message source.
1. With Outlook Express closed, go to Start>Run
2. Type in: regsvr32 inetcomm.dll (with the space after "regsvr32")
3. Click OK (or press the Enter key)
4. Open OE and see if things are fixed
When I open an instance of windows explorer, the navigation pane show little or nothing (no drives, folders, etc.). Also the preview pane does not show a preview for any selected files (See Capture1.JPG).
If I open a second (or higher) instance of windows explorer, the navigation pane functions properly (the preview still does not show) (See Capture2.JPG).
I have previews set to show (See Capture3.JPG).
Also occasionally, the file icons will be blank instead of showing the file type specific icon. When this happens, the address bar also seems to take a long time to load. The load bar will stop before reaching the end and won't finish (See Capture4.JPG).
Does anyone know what is going on or how to fix this?
FYI I am running 64 bit Windows 7 Pro.
Try Explorer++ and see if you get the same problem.
Need to enable "Folders" view.
If it works then you can rule out problems with system files and it's probably a buggy shell extension.

Is it possible to have no Nav Pane when opening a Desktop folder, but have Nav Pane when opening Win Explorer? Like it was in WinXp/Win98/Win95?
When I disable Nav Pane, it disappears for Desktop folders and Windows Explorer.
I think the answer was 'no' for Win7.
I installed Classic Start Menu hoping one of it's features could do it. If it does, I've not been able to enable it. Other than that, Classic Start Menu is a super improvement.

I have filled in the wrong details setting up my internet details, can I clear and start again
More repliesFor Windows 7, is there a list of the 'Details' available in the Windows Explorer folder view called 'Details' which has an explanation for each of them? Most of them are simple but some leave me scratching my head.
The "Details" which are available are those you see when a list of files is in "Details" view (as opposed to "Icons" or "Tiles" views. In "Details" view, depending on which column categories you have enabled, you are shown such things as filesize, file-date, filetype etc. If you then right-click any column header, you can choose to hide or show more information columns.I can't see how any of that can leave you scratching your head as it's no different to previous versions of Windows in that respect.

Sometimes it works, but after the first time it started up it barely ever works.
I tried starting it with the battery, without it, with the cord, and without that.
What’s going on, and how can I fix it?
I need a little help with something that seems simple. I am using Windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit. I have changed the columns in Details view in a folder. However Windows is not populating those columns, so what am I missing? This holds true on both my network drives and my local drives, so I checked my indexing options and they are set to index my local drives, so I assumed that should have at least worked. Any help would be very much appreciated.
Welcome to Seven Forums JLH1. Try this:
Right click an empty area in that folder> Sort by> More
Scroll down the list and make sure the categories you want are checked> OK

I have the following
Win 2k3 - Game Server
Ubuntu - Web Site + Admin Stuff for Game Server
WHS - File Storage + Back-UP + other stuff (don't have yet, but want/will get)
6 Total PCs - Gaming on some, Basics on others + 1 HTPC
Extra Comps - PFSense or Untangle or Router software
Few Switches - couple 10/100 and couple 10/100/1000
Couple Routers - WRT54G, Netgear N

What I would like to accomplish
I NEED to have the Game Server with the external IP address for it do act as I want.
Since I don't have net access at home I haven't had a chance to test things.
Can 2k3 have the net say... pass throught it? or atleast allow it to forward things efficiently? I don't want it to slow down the traffic for the other servers in times of higher traffic loads.
Would a switch after the server be enough for evertything or would a nix router -> switch be better to properly forward the ports to the other servers and handle firewall duties.
Can 2k3 basically handle all these above jobs with the effectiveness of say PFSense? I've heard PF does really well at QoS (would that even make a difference in this enviroment?)

For a Windows server...(or any server for that matter...but ESPECIALLY for a Windows server) you want to protect it behind a NAT firewall. Since high performance and online gaming are of concern...a high performance router would be desired...PFSense would fit the bill.
You open/forward the ports necessary for your games and other services which you wish to make available to the public...example, port 27960 for quake engine based games.
Sticking a Windows Server directly on a public IP address without hardware firewall protection..heh, you'll be formatting and reinstalling it on a weekly basis due to it being hacked into.
Advantage of being behind a NAT firewall...can just run servers with a single NIC.
Are there any opinions on what the best or most efficient case fan is? Brand/type?
I'm a new to this and am trying to make the most of a limited fan arrangment. Thanks in advance.
Coolermaster have worked out really well for me. I used to use Antec but they seem to fail early.
Motherboard: ASUS M3A78-EM.
RAM: 2x2GB Corsair XMS2 DDR2 @ 800MHz.
Just thinking at loud here.
I've been wondering...
What would be the ideal arrangement for my 2 sticks of RAM?
Ideal meaning, getting the most out of them (what would be the fastest setup).
Right now I have them as it follows:
Slot 1 (first yellow DIMM): Empty.
Slot 2 (second yellow DIMM): Stick #1 (2GB)
Slot 3 (first black DIMM): Empty.
Slot 4 (second black DIMM): Stick #2 (2GB).
Thoughts?
Looking at system using AMD 64 or FX CPU and incorporating PCI and SLI technology. Are there any motherboards, chipsets and graphics cards to support this arrangement? Is SLI only available to nVidia cards and is this likely to change? Can you use different makes/models of cards? Can a second card be purchased at a later date and converted to SLI (if others components configured at time) ? Can existing technology (eg monitors or even the current cpus ) cope?
You will need an SLI enable motherboard.I believe Asus have one out at the moment. Check it out on their website. As long as the motherboard supports the CPU then there shouldn't be any compatability problems.I am not sure if you can use cards from two different manufacturers, best to check on this.click hereAlso you can just run one Nvidia card initially then when that one begins to struggle you can by another card...hopefully cheaper because of depreciation and just pop that in to give ur PC a bit more zest.SLI is an Nvidia only technology and yes is only available on Nvidia cards that support the technology (6x00 series I think).ATI are working on a similar technology that apparently doesn't need the little bridging PCB that connects the two cards together. This will prob be available mid 2005.Any more Qs I'd be glad to try and answer them.

I've done quite a few searches on Google in addition to these forums on the topic of desktop icon arrangement.
Basically, I want Windows to auto arrange my icons on the right side of my screen by default rather than the left. I want to avoid using a 3rd party program, because those usually are just "trial" versions and keep annoying me to buy the whole program.
Thanks!

2 more repliesI'm thinking of buying a U31-70 laptop (I'm in the USA), but the online photos at http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/lenovo/u-series/u31 show that the [\] and [Enter] keys are reversed from their normal positions. The [Enter] key should be larger and below the [\] key, but in the photo they are the opposite. Are the keys really arranged this way? Why would you do that?
Hi foompah,
The Keyboard is laptop Compact keyboard
By it's look, It will seem like you'll be prone to pressing the \ instead the enter,
But when you placed you hand into it and try reaching the Enter, it is normal, This layout is like this,
Where the Enter is in the Third line when you reach it, Try looking for a keyboard where the enter goes from 3rd to 4th row and try reaching for it. Youll see that you'll touch the enter on the third line.
This is I believe due to compact keyboard size vs regular normal hands size.

Hi. I'm not really sure if this is the right forum for this. :$ If it isn't, I apologize.
Anyway, I've been having a problem that started quite a while ago. It isn't a major one and the truth is that I can deal with it if I have to, but I find it somewhat irritating and I was hoping someone might actually have a solution for it.
When I click on the Open tab for any media player or image viewer, the files/folders appear arranged alphabetically from Z to A. I remember that it didn't use to be like that, and I found the correct A to Z arrangement much easier to deal with. Might anyone have any idea how to tweak things to fix it?
Thanks so much.
Is this within a Windows Explorer window or an application window? Sometimes if you click on the 'Name' bar it will resort your files.
I have a folder with over 100 pictures in it. I want to add an ending slide to it, but it keeps putting it in the middle of the folder, I want it on the end. How do I get it to stay at the end of the files?
Have you disabled Auto Arrange?
Open the folder right click on a blank space and uncheck Auto Arrange.
I"m pretty new to Windows XP having come from an IMac and I need advice on my computers folders setup. When I open up my Windows Explorer the icons I see are Desktop,My computer, my network places, the recycle bin and unused desktop shortcuts. My documents icon when I open it shows folders of all the files I have created. When I open up "My computer" icon it show my drives etc and it also shows a folder I created that I named "budlous documents" which when opened shows exactly the same folders in it that I have in the "My documents" folder. Have I somehow duplicated all my folders ? If so which one would be the correct folder to keep ?
I have 18 items on my desktop and would like to separate certain ones from the left side of the page to the right side of the page. When I drag the icons to the right they revert back to the left after I leave the page. I used to be able to do this but it no longer works. Is there a way to accomplish this. Thanks, Micromos
Right-click on the Desktop > View and make sure 'Auto arrange icons' is not ticked.
Hello
Hopefully help can be found here. I'll try to make this brief. Bought 9 disk German audio set. Ripped to PC. Each disk has 10 to 12 lesions numbered 1 through 10. Problem. When added to WMP library, They are ordered by track number on each disk. By that I mean the first track on WMP is track 1 disc 1, but then it goes to Track 1 disk 2, track 1 disk 3. So the first track is number 1 on 1, but then the next lesion (track) is 14.. which is track 1 on disk 2. Can I have it arranged so it goes disk 1 tracks 1-14 , then disc 2.. 1-14, disc 3 .. 1-14 etc.. etc. HELP!!! The other problem is that they are arranging the same way on my Zune.

Hello TVZ, welcome to Seven Forums.

Am having this problem on 1 of my 4 computers. It's a Toshiba running XP Pro & I.E. 6, all available updates applied. Norton Anti-Virus is up-to-date and the latest AdAware SE Professional reports no problems. The IE toolbars revert to a set arrangement even though I unlock them, rearrange, relock, quit the browser & start IE up again. Nothing is there I don't want to be there, but they're not arranged the way I want, as they are on the other 3 computers. Have done a lot of registry editing & audits as suggested by a Microsoft guy on the MS community forums, but he finally ran out of ideas & said to try you guys. I do have a hijackthis log which I can upload if you wish. I really don't think I've been hijacked by anything; I think it's more of a Microsoft problem. I even vaguely remember it happening before, but can't remember what a different MS guy told me to do to fix it. Any ideas?
Have you tried uninstalling/reinstalling the toolbar?
Hi all,
Not sure if this is the type of question for these particular forums, as it's more of a general hardware query, but the community here has been very helpful in the past!
I've got a fairly old W7 Ultimate Q6600 PC with a 500w GX Lite PSU and recently ordered an cheap VTX 7870 graphics card. I've been thinking about doing it for some time, but thought now is the perfect time to add more cooling to my PC to mitigate the extra noise from the card.
I've attached some photos of my case - I've got a standard 120mm fan at the back of the case, and there is a vent which looks like it would fit a fan at the front which has screw holes 75mm and 85mm apart (but the vent itself is 90mm across, see photo 'front vent'). However since I got the PC about 6/7 years ago, the HDD bays have been attached to the bottom, which would obscure a front case fan (see photo 'bays'). This photo also shows two spare bays below my two optical drives so I think I should simply be able to move the HDD bay up to the two empty bays and create space for the air to be sucked into the case.
I've also got a vent on the removable panel on the side of the case (see photo - this funnel extends to over the stock CPU cooler). I assume I can't fit a fan to this as the panel needs to be removed!
So what would you guys recommend as the best solution:
1. Moving the HDDs and adding the front vent fan (would this be a 90mm or 85mm fan because I can't see 85mm fans on scan etc)
2. Getting a VGA coole... Read more
You have a couple of options.
1. You could buy a new case with better air flow. Antec makes some nice cases that aren't too expensive.
2. You can install a 90mm fan in the front (90mm fans have 85mm mounting holes, I believe). If you do that, moving the drives would be a good idea. If those are 3.5" bays above, you won't need adapters to do it. If they're 5.25" bays, you'll need adapters to mount the drives.
3. An extra GPU fan isn't practical in your case. There's nowhere to put it.
4. You could consider an aftermarket heatsink for your CPU for better cooling. This is a good one:
Cooler Master: Hyper 212 EVO
There are always options, though it can be difficult to cool an older case. My best suggestion would be to see if a newer case with better ventilation is in your budget, and if your components would fit in it.
Hey guys...I am currently trying to organize my music. I have however encountered a slight (yet to myself major) issue. It appears as though each folder has their own settings for what information will be displayed (album artist/ contributing artists/title/name/track#/etc...). Is there any way to make it so that all my folders containing music only display "Name - Track # - Artist - Contributing Artist - Album"??? Organizing my music is tedious enough, I really don't need this slowing me down (such a hassle to fix each artist/album folder to have that information :S)
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Hello Opi8,
You can set the folder view to how you want it, then use the Apply to all folders option to apply it to all folders with the same folder template (ex: Music).
Hope this helps,
Shawn
Alright, here is the problem, I use Internet explorer, and if I open like more than three window at a time, the things at the bottom, what ever they are called, go into a column that I have to sort through to move to the different window. I find that very annoying as opposed to windows 98 that would line them side by side. Is there anyway to stop that column stacking?

C: for system (15 GB)
D: for Data (30 GB)
Now my C: has become critical and I would like to shrink D to allocate more space to C. Is it possible?
Yes it is. Check out the tutorial.
That will have you delete your D: drive, and extend it to C:
In the future, I would get a bigger drive than 50 gigs. Vista requires about 20 minimum.

Files within a folder are not arranged in logical order, i.e... a file named 01121-4587 will come after one named 12-14528.jpeg. How can I get the files to be arranged in logical order by first number of the file meaning all the 0's then all the 1's down to ABC's.i.e... A45-62547.jpeg, not even paying attention to the - mark within the file?
You can't. "-" is ascii 45 and "0"-"9" are ascii 48-57. The files are sorted using your locale. You can rename the files, or build your own file manager.
Hello, everyone,
I am in the middle of an assembly right now. Should have thought things over... but...
I'm using the Antec 900 case with a Corsair TX750W PSU. The case comes with two front intake fans, a top exhaust fan, and a rear exhaust fan. The PSU is situated at the bottom/back of the case. The two intake fans take up 1/3 of the case each from the front.
My problem is that the TX750 comes with so many frigging cables, that I don't know where to put them. By default, the case places its two front-facing fans on the bottom 2/3's of the case. I'm wondering if it would work out okay if I moved the fans to take up the top 2/3s of the case and have the TX750 wires shoved into the bottom compartment, where they won't impede airflow.
Is that a good idea? Was there a purpose that one of the forward fans is placed at the bottom of the case?
Thanks for your help!
No point putting intake fans in front so close to the exhaust on top.
I'd vote leave it.
Hi, I've got thousands of photos on my computer. It took me days to manually arrange all my photos. I'll be getting a new computer, I will be transferring all my photos over to it. I don't want to spend days re arranging all my photos. Is there a program that can save the arrangement of all the thumbnails so that I don't have to spend days manually arranging them? any info is greatly appreciated
Thumbnails? Why not just get a good image-viewing program. Picasa? Faststone? Lightroom?
I think the thumbs/files will be arranged however you arrange it (by name, by date, etc...) so wouldn't it be a matter of using that same organization scheme on the new computer?
I was looking for a slim keyboard whose arrangement of buttons is similar to what we can find in some laptops - wihout numeric keypad, having Delete, Insert, Home, End, PgUp and PgDn buttons close to one another in a 2x3 group. The only option found so far is the model 31P9490 made by Lenovo:
However, I didn't want a keyboard with a touchpad.
Given so many constraints, does anybody know if the keyboard I want really exists ?

Other than that i dont think you will find it. Might have to hack one off a Laptop and convert it.
Here's something a bit baffling.
I've a ******** of images in a folder and they're arranged in order of modification, from oldest to newest. Right, when clicking on an image and opening it in the Windows picture viewer, when I go to scroll through the images they seem to have been placed in alphabetical order despite the folder not being set for this. I'd like to get them back to being viewed in order of 'last modified' and simply setting the files to be shown in this way isn't doing the trick.
Any ideas?
If you are in detailed view, you can click where it says "Date Modified" and it will sort the images by the date modified.
Is this what you have done? I have never seen it not work before.
I was wondering why some program shortcuts appear before folders and other items on the desktop and other shortcuts appear after the folders? This is the case no matter how I arrange desktop items. I did not know some programs even had desktop shortcuts until I looked at the desktop folder (I have a lot of folders on my desktop so some stuff is offscreen). Even in the windows explorer view of the desktop, changing the sorting option to type still arranges certain desktop shortcuts above the folders and others after the folders and a few different file types. The type of both say "shortcut" and I right clicked the properties of shortcuts from both sets and I did not see any different settings or ticked off boxes that suggest why they are treated differently.
I've been meaning to prune down the folders and files on the desktop, but I would still like all of my program shortcuts (including ones I create like "Safely Remove Hardware" when that icon sometimes does not show up at all on my toolbar) to all appear before the folders.
Hello,
I have Win7 Pro running on a dell PC, operating in administrator mode.
My monitor looks best if I set to 1024 x 768 (4 by 3 ratio LCD old). After setting that resolution and re-arranging some icons, I log off and shut down. on restart and login, the previous 1280 x 768 comes up with the old arrangement of icons. Why doesn't the PC remember the settings?

I really haven't kept up with Win 8 but I'm getting free licenses thru school/ACM and I'm probably buying a second 830 SSD soon so I figured I'd toss Win 8 on it and slowly migrate my stuff. I'm wondering how it partitions the drive by default tho.
Win 7 used to do the recovery partition but I'd avoid it (by deleting it during setup) just because it wasn't all that useful (beyond Bitlocker & System Restore) and it needlessly complicated my drive image backups. Has any of that changed?
I'd start the install and just check for myself but I haven't bought the spare drive yet and my Win 8 copy is downloading maddeningly slow so it'll be a while...
You can do the same setup in win8 as win7. Delete away.

More repliesI love the windows auto arrangement function when moved to the edge of the screen, however there is one that is very annoying, that is bottom edge.
I have one of my monitor in portrait mode, and sometimes I want to view two windows, one on the top and the other on the bottom. But I can not cover the all the area down the bottom because once I go near the bottom edge, Windows maximizes it.
Now I know in the "Make the mouse easier to use" page, I can "prevent" it all, but I just want to disable the bottom edge and leave the top, left and right edge as the way they are. How can I do that?
Thanks.
