Change Device Icons with Custom Icons - Devices & Printers

Question: Change Device Icons with Custom Icons - Devices & Printers

Hi All,

Wondering if you can offer me some pointers here......

Brink put together an excellent tutorial on this process for Windows 7 (http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials...tom-icons.html) and with some adaption for the revisions to the Metadata Authoring Wizard contained in the Windows 10 Drivers Kit I have already customised my device icons and even provided some (limited) assistance to others grappling with the task (iPhone shown as Unspecified in Devices and Printers).

All that is, with a couple of pesky exceptions namely the main system icon which remains set at it's somewhat bland generic Windows 10 image and I am at a loss as to how to change it to a more representative custom image....

Secondly, the (ugly) generic icon representing the WiFi Gigabit Router (always shown under the custom name assigned to my network) is inaccessible ("greyed out") such that selecting properties (right click) and bring up the properties dialogue offers the usual "General", "Hardware" and "UPnP" tabs but the "Properties" button on the "Hardware" tab is "greyed out" and thus non of the required Hardware ID's can be accessed.

Returning to the "System" icon customisation I am able to access the Properties and from the Hardware Tab to select "ACPI x64-based PC" from a very comprehensive "System Devices" list and then to select the "Properties" button and from the resulting "Details" tab selecting the "Hardware ID" simply reveals just "acpiapic"

Using the Metadata Authoring Wizard and selecting "Device Only Metadata" for the "Package Type" (step 1) and then "Computeresktop" or "Computer:Tower" from the tree in "Device Categories" (step 2) produces the following error (see screen shot)...

choosing "Yes" reverts the selection in (step 1) to "Internal Devices" whilst selecting "No" simply deselects the chosen "Device Categories" (step 2).

Proceeding as an "Internal Device" to "Locales" (step 3) and selecting "English (United Kingdom) en-GB" from the tree allows proceeding to "Device Info" (step 4) into which under "Model Name" the following text string representing my Motherboard was inserted "Asus P6T7 WS SuperComputer 64 Bit Windows PC" along with the corresponding details for "Manufacturer", "Model Number", "Description 1" & "Description 2" together with a representative icon. See screenshot.

Proceeding to "Hardware Info" (step 5) and opting to add a Hardware ID offers the following choices which with the assistance of CPU-Z I completed with the representative entries on the following screenshot before generating the error message in the subsequent screenshot referring to two GUID's hardware for which I have been unable to identify in either the Windows directory or the Registry....

see here

Cancelling the error and proceeding to "App Info" (step 6) which I left unfilled (default?) then to "Windows Info" (step 7) in which all I did was to check the box for the item "Show the device when it is disconnected" moving finally to "Finish" which resulted in the error message displayed in the final screenshot below

For ease of reading the full text reads:

The following errors must be fixed before your metadata package can be created:

Hardware info
: Each OEM hardware ID must have associated SMBIOS information to successfully submit to the Windows Hardware Dev Center Dashboard. If you have a device manifest file (devicemanifest-ms), you should edit it instead of editing the device metadata file (devicemetadata-ms). Otherwise, you can enter the SMBIOS information on the Hardware Info page.

Hopefully, someone can identify exactly what I have omitted....

One final thought, is customising this item likely to have any influence on the "Digital Entitlement" held by MS's servers for automatic activation/re-activation?

All advice much appreciated as ever....

Thanks in advance,

PC Pilot

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi everybody.

Quick question.

Are the icons in the Devices and Printers window (Device Stage) replaced immediately upon any system update, or do they just show up and get replaced at random whenever Win7 feels like doing it?

I recently did a fresh install of Win7 on two different machines (Ultimate x64 on one machine and Enterprise x64 on another) and the devices listed show the stock icons even though the drivers for those peripheral units are installed... All "Update" settings are set to recommended and automatic on both machines.

Weird thing is before I re-installed Ultimate on the first machine, the true icons showed up in Devices and Printers for my monitor, keyboard (MS keyboard), Canon scanner, Brother printer... I didn't quite pay attention how/when that happened, but I was pleasantly surprised with the extra access I had by just clicking that life-like icon.

Now, since the re-install, all I get are the stock icons.

Funny thing is when I hit "Properties", say - for the keyboard, which is a Microsoft 3000 kbd, the info simply reads: "Unknown Manufacturer", "HID keyboard Device". The MS drivers are installed though.

Same thing for my monitors (Dell 2209WA). Windows downloaded the drivers, but the properties info shows the monitor as "uknown manufacturer". How weird is that?

Something I'm missing???? Or is this Device Stage fubared somehow?

Cheers
Steve

Answer:Devices and Printers icons (Device Stage)

Hello Steve,

You need to make sure that you have either step 3 or have Replace generic device icons with enhanced icons checked in step 5 in the tutorial below first to allow the icons to be changed. I have not noticed any pattern as to when it decides to update the icons. Usually after X times of running Windows Update.

Device Installation Settings

Hope this helps,

Hi all

I have a windows 7 machine and I have been having problems with setting up my wireless printer. I have been able to sort the problem by uninstalling and reinstalling it (at least 10 times in the same day) but my question here is why I cannot see it in the printers and devices folder(control panel). In fact no devices appear in this folder.

Is this a known fault with windows 7 or just something I have done?

I probably never would have noticed except when having communication problems and various troubleshooters referred me to the the printer properties.

Incidentially...

As you can see fromt he attachments. The icon for the webcam, monitor, Keyboard use to look like the real thing. now it shows some generic icons, how can I change it or restore it back to the better icons?

Also you can see I have two mice and keyboards showing up. This only happened when I installed the Logitech G15 keyboard software. Is is ok to leave them? I deleted them once and when I reboot they come back.

Answer:Devices and Printers Icons

Hello Customprofile

Those enhanced icons are usually downloaded by windows if you have it set to do so - Device Installation Settings
Its fine to leave the other icons, its just to show you have 2 different keyboards installed.

Hi guys,

I have noticed that half of the icons under Devices and Printers have vanished
http://imgur.com/fwThQ.png

I have the 'yes automatically' option clicked in this option screen http://www.sevenforums.com/attachmen...s-settings.jpg

Is there some way to force windows to download the icons again?

I would even be happy if i could get the default non enhanced icons back.

I want to be able to customize icons that appear in Devices and Printers. I also want to hide or reclassify some of the items appearing there.

I want to customize how icons appear without modifying the DDores.dll which holds all the generic device images. I am well aware of changing devices and printers Icons.. thread. Devices and Printers can download images for some of the devices. Where are those saved? How can I make use of this for the devices that do not get a download?

Also I have a Sidewinder Strategic Commander. This device is somewhat ancient but works fine (installing it is a bit tricky). This device appears as an "unspecified" device. I'd prefer to recategorize it as a gaming/input device.

Also the same device appears twice in Devices and Printers once as "Microsoft Sidewinder Strategic Commander" and second as a virtual "HID Keyboard Device". It is the same device so I wish it to appear once.

As per title.

This issue comes up time and time again with fresh Windows installs but I have yet to find a real solution other than reinstalling Windows again and hoping that it works.

So tell me, is there a way to force Windows to reset the folder's info/icons and download the nice ones?

I don't want to customise or do it manually - I just want Windows to do it the way it's supposed to.

Thanks

Answer:Devices and Printers Icons won't update

Bump

I'm also finding that the devices that aren't updating to the nice icons don't even have a folder and info in C:\Users\MyUserName\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Device Metadata\dmrccache\en-us

Really annoying and no one in the world seems to know why this happens or how to fix it.

I have a fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit Edition....after installing everything and running Windows Update over and over until everything was installed, I opened Devices and Printers, it asked me if I wanted Windows to download driver software and realistic icons for my devices....I chose Yes, do this automatically which was recommended. After doing this and rebooting from all of the Windows Updates installing earlier, it displayed incorrect icons and even renamed the model of my computer from a tower computer to a laptop computer...the icon changed to a laptop icon. My computer is definitely a tower computer. Dell XPS 420. Is there a way to change this back to what it was?

Answer:Devices and Printers not displaying correct icons...etc

I don't know, but it's harmless. This part of Windows has never worked perfectly for me either, and I built my own computer. So, it's just free entertainment provided by Microsoft.

Using Windows 7 Professional, Service pack 1, Pentium® Dual-Core CPU, E5200 @ 2.5Ghz, Installed Ram 5.00 Gb, 64 -bit Operating System,
I have two printer Samsung 2510 and Epson Artisan 810. If I do a file print while in a browser I can select either printer and print.
But if I wanted to share a printer and go to the Devices and Printers folder, that folder is empty?

I first noticed a problem when I inserted my SD card from my digital camera to edit the photos I had just taken, normally I insert the card and then Windows pops up a menu asking if I want to Open etc..
But this time that Window never popped open, I can go to another computer and see the SD card and pictures.

Hello
Ive managed to change all the icons on my system to custom ones apart from devices and printers and recorded tv on the right of the start menu.(the ones that appear over your user picture when you hover over them) Ive searched everywhere for their location in the registry but cant find them anywhere.(spent 3 hrs today searching the reg for them)
Please does anyone know the keys for these 2 items.Ill be suprised if no-one on here has a list of them all somewhere

Thankyou

Answer:change start menu icons "devices and printers" and "recorded tv"

Hello Danny,

The default icon for Devices and Printers is located at the registry locations below. This will also change the icon in all other locatations as well. For example in the Control Panel.

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{A8A91A66-3A7D-4424-8D24-04E180695C7A}\DefaultIcon

I have not found the Recorded TV one yet though.

I'm posting this in case it helps others encountering the same problem. I spent three or four days on this without success. Google searches on this forum and generally on the web and Microsoft came up with no working solution - although it appears to be a problem that has afflicted Windows 7 and Windows 8 users too. I finally solved the problem by comparing the services list of the PC with the problem to that of a PC that did not have the problem.

I updated three Windows 8.1 PCs to Windows 10. All updates went fine but one PC had an annoying problem that (finally) I have now solved. This was a brand new Lenovo PC out of the box with Windows 8.1 pre-installed. My first step was to run the free upgrade to Windows 10. This appeared to work fine with one (at least so far) problem - all the following are related:

Do you know of there is a way to get the Devices and Printers listed in the right click of the W10 Start Menu? It would be much faster to look at a problem printer if I did not have to go to the Control Panel. It would also work almost like all of the other Start menus in the past.

Hi all,
Title pretty much says it all. For some reason on my latest build, I am not getting all of the enhanced icons for all of my devices.. more specifically my HP w2207 monitors and my HP C309g Printer. I have gone through the procedure of going into Devices
and Printers and right clicking on my computer and going into Device Installation Settings and changing the settings..to no avail. Anyone know of a way to force these items to update?

Answer:How to force a rescan of enhanced icons in Devices and Printers

Hi,

The device icon depends on the driver of manufacturer. You can update the drivers to the latest version.

If the device doesn?t change, you can also change it by yourself:
When you install a device, the device information will be created on
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Device Metadata\dmrccache

You can find may device information name such as
b3004f87-774a-4cc6-9c51-89264da4ed5a

In that folder, go to deviceinformation, and you will see the device icon. You can change the icon yourself.
Hope that helps.

When I open the device/printers tab from the start menu it shows all my devices currently connected to my PC...so far so good. My problem is that my printer icon for my installed printer, HP all-in-one Office-jet 5610v and is all updated, shows the icon for printer the doesn't remotely come close to what my printer looks like. I have found this article from MS that supposedly has a fix for this. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2403006

I've run this fix and it says that the fix has been applied but when I check the device/printer tab is shows the icon properly for about 1 sec and then goes back to the original non-conforming icon.

This problem occurs on all my PC's across my home network. Same result when trying to apply fix on all PC's.

If so I think you have the correct one. They don't use actual pictures of devices, just "realistic" icons. You can make an icon and install it I have heard. I ran the Fixit and no change.

This isn't a serious problem, but it is annoying since it has never happened before and I'm used to having a Win XP custom desktop.

Anyway, I can't think of anything new that I've done to my computer as of late except install Spybot and other spyware detecting programs (Hijack This!, etc.) but now, whenever I restart or turn off my computer, my custom icons revert to default windows icons.

By this I mean:

My Computer
My Documents
My Network Places
Recycle Bin (full)
Recycle Bin (empty)

I can normally customize these by clicking right clicking on the desktop > Properties > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Change Icon

But, just as of this week, they have begun to revert back to the boring default windows icons.

I'm sure this is a simple problem but I can't for the love of God figure out how to fix it.

Any suggestions would be incredibly appreciated.

This is a weird problem I've notice in two computers I have, both with Vista. I assigned custom icons to various folders (like on my pictures I have an .ico file picture of a camera and on my documents I have an .ico picture of garfield, etc....) On both computers (one a desktop and the other a laptop) after about 1 month, the folders .ico went back to default, they both went back to the plain manilla folder .ico picture. I can manually put the custom icons back but its kind of a hassle. I don't have any idea why both computers have done this? Must be something I can do to stop it?? Any ideas

Hi there

If you wish to create easily custom desktop Icons from images captured then you can use the LAST FREE VERSION of ICOFX (It Used to be freeware - everybody seems to be trying to Monetise every possible item now -but the last FREE version is still available and the paid version doesn't really have much to offer if you just want to create ICONS).

Last Freeware version: DiskDigger, Amic Email Backup, Mystic Thumbs, IcoFX, phpDesigner, Xinorbis

@Brink - I added a question in your tutorial about How to create the ICONS for Metro apps as you used Custom ZIP one in your example -- perhaps you could delete the remark or refer to the above program which does it easily

1) For Metro simply open the tile and press PRT SCREEN before the application starts
2) Paste to ms WORD / WORDPAD (Standard comes with Windows enter WORDPAD in the Start box)
3) Use Snipping tool to select a reasonable rectangle of the ICON and save as PNG file
4) Import into the ICOFX program - Will create Icon for you
5) Save as .ICO file
6) Now ready to use in Windows.

Has anyone figured out how to manually change device icons? It seems like there's only accurate icons for Microsoft hardware or more common things like iPods.

If so, has anyone started a sort of database of icons for specific models?

Answer:Manually Change Device Icons?

Can't remember where I read it, but there has been some 'looking into' of the subject. Apparently it is possible to change the device icon to one of your own, but as soon as you connect to the internet it will be overwritten, as the device icon cache is refreshed. So until that kink is worked out its really not worth it.

Icon Changing has been around for a while with XP.

Themexp.org has them, and im sure others do too. StyleXp is a good program for customizing your xp. Watch for viruses or spyware on themexp though, my virus scanner has acted up a few times on that site. It isnt the downloaded file, but it occurrs when you download. Downloading to the current/default folder without switching seems to avoid viruses however.

Hello! So I just signed up here because I'm desperate and don't know what to do.

So basically, I thought the windows 10 default folder icons were pretty bland and ugly so I decided to change them. I read that you could change your default icons by going into to registry and I did just that. Long story short, it didn't work so i deleted the registry folder that I had just created, like they said you could. I was very careful (or so I think) to not touch anything else

But now I'm worried I might have messed up somewhere because now I can't change icons for some of the folders I use. Not sure if this was a problem before that I didn't notice or if it's due to me messing around with things I don't understand.

As things are now, I can change icons for folders that I created but the folders that came with the system (like documents, music, movies, downloads etc) I'm currently unable to change. The thing is, I was able to change the folder icons just a while ago, so I changed them all by right clicking on the folder, choosing properties and then changing the icon, and that worked fine. Then I decided to just use the default icons anyway but I was only able to switch back some of them, and some of those now had the wrong folder icon. My "downloads" folder is just a blank white space for example and I'm unable to change it.

Answer:Unable to change folder icons + folders showing the wrong icons

Hi, whenever you are about to make changes to your registry, back up beforehand. So you now know that and I'll show you an excellent way to rescue yourself in future.

First, do you have System Restore turned on (it's off by default in '10), and do you have any useful restore points?
Second, have you made a system image using Windows Backup and Restore or do you use disk imaging?

Either of those could let you restore your PC to a point before you made these changes- hopefully System Restore would protect enough to reverse your changes.

Please advise.

If you can't do that, and you are convinced there is a problem, then you may have two options, assuming you've not done some damage to the registry.

1. If you create a new user account for test purposes, do your folders look normal?

2. If not, I suggest you do an in-place upgrade repair install.
I will provide the instructions if necessary when you have replied.

Please post back and advise on these points.

I can also tell you how to achieve this quite easily and relatively safely:
Now here's the backup method we strongly recommend:
Creating disk images lets you restore Windows and all your disks and partitions to a previous working state, quickly and probably without technical help.

You can recover from:
- a failed disk drive (restore to a new one)
- ransomware (which encrypts your disk)
- user error
- unrecoverable problems from failed updates to problem programs
- unbootable PC (hardware faults aside)

I have two icons that I want to assign to two folders. Unfortunately, something has gone wrong. Let me explain what happened step by step:

1. I have two folders: "A" and "B".
2. I have two icons (.ico files): "A" and "B".
3. I place icon "A" in folder "A" and icon "B" in folder "B".
4. I assign icon "A" to folder "A" and icon "B" to folder "B".
5. I notice that I've switched the icons around.
6. I move icon "A" to folder "B" and icon "B" to folder "A".
7. I rename icon "A" to "B" and icon "B" to "A".
8. I assign icon "A" to folder "A" and icon "B" to folder "B".
9. I notice that I still get to see the switched-around icons that I assigned in step 4 in the large and extra large icon views. In the smaller views the folder icons are now correct.

Here's what I did to try solve this problem:

- Follow two tutorials: Icon Cache - Rebuild and Default File Associations - Restore in Windows 8 (for .ico files).
- Remove the icon cache using the Disk Cleanup utility.
- Run "sfc /scannow" and "chkdsk /f /r".
- Run CCleaner to cleanup the registry and manually remove some registry keys that I pinpointed by looking for the registry keys that change when I assign an icon to a folder.

To show an example (I'm sorry the text is in swedish I hope you can somewhat understand):

Google shows lots of malware possibilities, in form of trojan):Hi. I was troubleshooting delay in Windows 7 shut down and saw ASUS files maybe causing slow shut down, so uninstalled ASUS web storage and multiframe (which I don't remember why I had it) and now all my desktop icons of shortcuts and text files have a CLOCK icon (4:00 to be exact)! I am afraid some kind of schedule to delete my files has begun on my own machine, at 4:00! I can't change any icons to a different icon, it's a blue clock saying 4:00. To Asus support: I was about to restore program and start synching files too. I was having problems deselecting default file locations and setting up my own locations. Just help me assure that my files will be ok and this desktop icon change doesn't mean anything and is not a system-wide icon change, afraid to look, but I will.

You have now posted this on two different forums here, and it reads like a follow-up to some communication or other. The last bit on this one is addressed to Asus support. We are nothing whatever to do with them or any other company.Maybe you need to find whatever website you were communicating with. If you really did intended to ask for help on this forum then give us the background so that we properly understand it.EDIT:I see another helper has picked this up, so maybe that will help and/or I misunderstood this one.Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanksmessage edited by Derek

Can change folder and shortcut icons with XP features, but is there an XP feature or 3rd party software package (possibly freeware) that can change (all extension types) file icons ?
Am looking at shareware (about $20) 'IconChanger 3.7' but not sure what file extensions it can work with (have emailed IC tech support for that list, but have not yet heard back).
Any ideas ?

Answer:How to change file/s icons in addition to folder & shortcut icons ???

I've found a couple of free ones. There's the XP Transformation Pack which will make XP look like Vista (I think). I have another one, but I can't remember what it's called or where I downloaded it from. I think I have the info at home (I'm at work right know) and if I find it, I'll be sure to post it...

Edit: here's one I found whilst Googling. It's an icon pack for about 30 or 40 different extensions....
http://interfacelift.com/icons-win/details.php?id=1928 Their home page provides access to a bunch of other icons... check it out.. If you're interested in making your own icons, there's lots of tools out there. The free ones are OK but usually limited in features. IconCool is one of the better ones, but it's not free. I Googled "XP icons" and found lots of stuff...

Edit #2: if you have seen icons already on your PC that you'd like to extract for personal use, use IconSnatcher. It will look inside EXE files and DLL files (and lots of others) http://www.snapfiles.com/get/iconsnatcher.html

Hello, when i first got my compute i installed a custom theme changing basically evrything about my computer and its apearence on the desktop. This includes the icons as well. When i tried to revert back to the original windows 7 icons it seems that this theme (which is third party I should mention has changed their icons to the default ones) has made the their icons the default. I was wondering if their is a way to get the original windows 7 icons back.

hi there

i start to get really weird problem lately...

the Explorer toolbar of windows 7 sometimes show me different icons only in progrems that use admin rights, relate to windows, use..java? o_O

it show the icons of the last progrem i used, like if i will enter to Utorrent window, then i will see it icon on the next progrem i will try to launch like Windows defender.. (only in progrems that use admin rights, relate to windows, and use Java, games and etc not effect by that).

however when i restart my pc the problem is fixed.. till i open progrems like Jdownloader or progrem that use Java (i think... i not test it many times yet..), or wait really alot of time when the pc is on... there is a small chance that it come from some filters or codecs because i watch animes really alot and use CCCP codec pack...

this problem happend to me long time ago and was fixed by itself.. i also format since then so i thought it was gone for good...

anyone know how to fix it? O_o

*i attach two pics , and btw i have Hebrew language OS so don't panic when you see the desktop from right to left instead of left to right ^^

Hi all,
I try to set the following setting ("Replace generic device icons with enhanced icons") we can found in "Device Installation Settings". To be more clear, the configuration window can be found by typing "device installation"
in the Start menu.
So I know how to find the option, but not how to change it silently. We can change the setting to automatically install or always install or never install or... by using the following:
 - Registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\DriverSearching
The GPO seems to me to not allow the same level of granularity in settings, I only have found these interresting
- GPO: Administrative Templates\System\Driver Installation\ Turn off Windows Update device driver search prompt in conjonction with Administrative Templates\System\Internet Communication Management\Internet Communication settings\Turn off Windows Update
device driver searching.
Does anyone of you know a method to set the option silently by registry or GPO ?
Thanks and regards

Answer:"Replace generic device icons with enhanced icons" - How to set silently

Hi Thierry,

We could set it through registry entry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Device Metadata
PreventDeviceMetadataFromNetwork

Set this value to 0 to enable it and set this value to 1 to disable it. This has the same effect as explicitly enabling or disabling it in the Control panel.Karen Hu

How to change icon in devices and printers ?

Answer:How to change icon in devices and printers

Are you talking about these icons?
If so they are in the DDORes.dll in both C:\Windows\System32 and C:\Windows\SysWOW64 for 64-bit
You should work on copies of the .dll on your desktop using a resource hacker of some kind. After you have made your changes you will need to take ownership and give yourself permission so you can rename the old .dll and replace it with the new one

I've been tinkering with the look of my whole system recently. I didn't like the default theme or the folder icons. Now with the help of SevenForums article How to change default folder icons: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials...lder-icon.html. It was a very handy article that got me quite far and the same principles applied to Win10 as it did on 7

I've been able to change only a few of the default folders. Now as I'm fairly average at tinkering I've done what the article said on my 10 machine with some success as shown below:

However the live folders do not update despite editing both the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Shell Icons AND the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Shell Icons Registry locations. This met with the above result after a restart. Below you can see what I did to the registry:

As you can see from the registry paths I replaced 3, 4, 5 (back), 6 (front) and 162 (full). But 5, 6 and 162 have not updated at all.

So Am I missing something or is there no way to alter these types of folders? Including but not limited to such as the Fonts folder icon, live folders, full folders or folders containing data of one form or another for example:

Question: Custom Icons

I'm not having any sucess in making my own custom icons as I have in previous versions of Windows. For example, I draw a blue circle with a white background (32 bits square), and save it as a bmp format with an ico extension (as instructed by Windows XP help). When I select this file as the custom icon the white background shows as black. If I set the background to transparent (I use PaintShop Pro) I get the same result. How can I get the background to be transparent so the Windows desktop background shows through?

does anyone know how i can make a folder in my usb appear with one of my custom icons??

it seems to always display the default icon and never my one, so when plaugged into another computer i want my custom one to appear

any software or anything to help me do this

Answer:custom icons on usb

You mean an icon for the usb drive itself?

yes you can, first you need the icon you want, use this wesite to make a favicon from any picture, use this favicon in the next steps. http://www.html-kit.com/favicon/

there should be a autorun.inf file on the root of your flash drive, right click on it and select "open with" then select notepad. Once the file is open edit it, add the entry

Icon=xxxx.ico

xxxx is the name of your favicon file you made earlier, save changes to the inf file when you close it.

Copy your favicon file to the root of your flash drive, you are done, it will now display that icon when you plug it into any windows pc.

If there is no autorun.inf file you can create one, make a new text file and name it autorun, open the text file and add this text at the top [Autorun] then add the text Icon=xxxx.ico below the autorun text. save changes when you close it, then change the txt file extension to inf
Custom icons for a folder are stored on each PC, and may not be available when plugged into different PC's

Question: Custom Icons

I am working on an icon package that is going to have a lot of common and uncommon hardware and software icons in it.

I was inspired by the lack of icons for things I need icons for.

What I would like to know is are there any hardware/software icons anyone needs? Be specific if you can.

I will include any and all icons I can in a package and get it uploaded with a link once it's finished.

Here is an example of a volume icon I made for my SoundBlaster X-Fi Fatal1ty audio card:

These are the types of things I want to include in the package. I know there are quite a few other people out there running the same audio card that I am and with win7 displaying an icon for audio hardware in the volume slider I figured this could be a nice addition.

I like to place folders on my desktop, instead of individual icons. Since I have a lot of apps I frequent, I prefer to group them into folders based on category. To be brought up in Windows Explorer.

Problem is ... the icons for every folder looks exactly the same ... like this:

Is there any way I can take any image file that has small enough in terms of pixel dimensions (possibly even create one of my own), and map it to a folder or any other app or file I might want to map it to? That way, I would have a unique icon for ...

"Games" shortcuts
"Emulator" shortcuts,
"Word Documents" shortcuts,

And so forth?

Answer:Can I have custom icons?

Right-click the folder that you want to change, and then click Properties.

In the Properties dialog box, click the Customize tab.

Windows 7's Windows Update device driver update settings can be configured in Control Panel - Devices and Printers - Device installation settings:

What is the difference between the first two 'No, let me choose what to do' options: 'Always install the best driver software from Windows Update' and 'Install driver from Windows Update if it is not found in my computer.'? Will both settings install drivers from Windows Update, if Windows Update has a more updated version than the one found in the computer?

Answer:Ctrl Panel-Devices & Printers-Device Inst.:Difference between settings

as far as i know in the first case, the system will first look for the relivent driver in the microsoft's driver databae and then compare it to the one on your system(if any present) and install the same. While in the later case, the system will look for drivers online only if it can't find any on the net.
I would personally recommend you to set to the later option cause it wastes a lot of time serching the net for drivers when set to always. Besides, if there is a newer version of the driver it is automatically added to the optional updates in "Windows update".

Hope it helps you out

Hi

I have a win XP home OS. I have different user accounts set up.
Children accounts are restricted. I run McAfeee security suite.
Last week I noticed that while on a Parent account( admin rights) I was informed that I could not access a site due to restrictions of a certain child account. I thought it strange, but I am running a MS OS so no biggie? Wrong!

The next day I logged in and noticed my sytray was void of network icons etc. There were only a few oldies. McAfee, Clock and two others. When looking in control panel network etc. there was nothing. Also later I discovered the same for printers. I tried running a scan with McAfee but it starts up and then disappears. I then tried installing other demo's from AV fame, but then got told that I have no admin rights. I ran a Kaspersky online and no viri were found. When looking at user accounts In both normal and safe mode , I and the Admin accnt. has admin rights, but everything else behaves like a severely restricted account. I can still access Inet and some url blocking by McAfee is still observable. However I fear compromise of my data and pesrsonal info and logins while using the internet.

I suspect malware or malfunction of Win XP.

I have run Norman_Malware_Cleaner.exe form MG but the problem still pervails.

I do not have experience with keeping the system & data in tackt and removing such deviant software. :confused

If you have a customized icon on your web page for when people add your site to their favorites is it normal for the icon to disappear if you clean out your temp internet folder and delete history?
Or would the disappearing icon be because you have' no cache ' written in your script?

is there a way to apply a custom icon to this program? i hate seeing the ugly default program icon that shows when there isnt an icon.

Answer:Custom Program Icons?

Hello CR4CK3RW0LF,

You could create a shortcut from the program's exe file, then change the shortcut's icon to what you like for this.

Hope this helps,

Custom Icons for This PC 'Folders'
----- I first posted this as a reply to a tutorial but then I noticed it is better suited here -----

First of all, thanks for this guide and all other guides that eliminate the junk that's just useless and irritating.

I don't need the Musik, Video or Desktop folder so I've already removed the Musik folder; the Desktop folder will also get removed after I tidy up the files there (img 1).
img 1
But I would like to have a folder for Star Wars Battlefront II (a quite old game, but I still like playing it; especially with different mods/maps so I have quite a lot of files there that I would like to access quickly and easily).

For that I've simply renamed the Videos folder (img 1).

But as I am quite a perfectionist I would like to change the Videos icon for a Star Wars icon.
And this is where it gets a bit more complicated.

Firstly there are 2 different Properties tabs for the folder: one for My PC (img 2/left) and one for Users/Jippiee (img 2/right).

img 2
As you can tell, the properties window for Users/Jippiee (img 2/right) has the option for a Folder Icon but this only affects the folder in Users/Jippiee (img 3) (sadly ).

img 3

The Option 'Folder pictures' (img 2) had only affected the Users/Jippiee (again ) and this only when set to at least medium icons (or maybe that was just the file inside ).

Then I started playing around with the desktop.ini file but with no luck.

The top two (img 4) are older backups, the... Read more

Hi, your screenshots haven't worked- use the icon to the left of the video icon above your post text.

You need to be very careful. You can easily end up with problems you really don't want.
I hope you are using disk imaging routinely to protect your PC and your data. (Macrium Reflect (free) ).

If you really want to modify dll resources, try Resource Hacker (free). (Easy to find).

I use a couple of programs to quickly modify about 80 icons in imageres.dll, so when this is overwritten - e.g. by SFC /SCANNOW or a major upgrade- it's quite quick to redo the change. Bear that in mind when planning changes like this.

Other than that, I'm very concerned that you will do something that will have a detrimental effect and lead to problems. Be cautious. Rather than randomly trying multiple things focus on one, make sure you have a backup (see disk imaging, above), try the change for a while, if ok, try another.

Be disciplined and do enough research to be confident. Consider whether risking breaking your PC is worth what you're attempting.

Hi

I`ve done a Flash movie file my self and I created a new custom icon for it.

I`ve looked for something (an aplication or a tutorial) that could help me, but I found a video on YouTube that spoke of a small site called Converticon and explained how to work with it, but I forgot the web site and my browser History was cleaned a couple of days ago.

How can I convert this file on a usable .ico file?

Can anyone help me here? Any advices please?

Answer:Help with custom file icons

A Flash movie cannot be converted to an ico file. Icons are not animated.

Hello, i'm new here.
I was trying various ways of customizing default icons. I ended uop modifying both shell32.dll and imageres.dll. Anyway i was planning to make a .bat installer, and i had the doubt that using the same shell32 and imageres in different computers could cause problems. Then i decided to move in the registry way of doing things. But i can't find out how to customize many icons from imageres.dll, they seem to be completely random.

Change Windows 8 icons trough registery - OS Customization, Tips and Tweaks - Neowin Forums
I took starting code from here, i've put CURRENT_USER instead of USER.
I know that in this part:

Code:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Icons]
"3"="C:\\Folder.ico,0"
"4"="C:\\Folder.ico,0"
"livefolder_back"="C:\\livefolder_back.ico,0"
"livefolder_front"="C:\\livefolder_front.ico,0"
"29"="C:\\Shortcut-arrow.ico,0"
"34"="C:\\Desktop.ico,0"
"15"="C:\\Computer.ico,0"

The numbers refer to the iconsets contained inside shell32.dll, so it's easy to find out what number to use for other icons. Instead i don't understand how to know which icon from imageres.dll is referred from which code. In particular, apart for the fact that i'd like to change everything, in the page i linked the taskbar Explorer.exe icon is missing (http://windowstips.ru/wp-cont... Read more

Question: Custom File Icons?

I've got a program that creates various file types; some of these are associated with the program and display its icon. Is it possible to keep the file association, but change the icons for some of the associated types so they stand out in a listing?

If so, then ideally I'd like to extract the icon from the exe, make three slightly different versions, and make these display (at all scales) for the three main file types. Any suggestions for tools to do this? I have Photoshop CS5.

Answer:custom website icons?

From the website side of things just create an icon (.ico), store it on your website somewhere, and then put the line:
Code:
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="http://www.yourwebsite.com/youricon.ico" />
I can't say as I know how to do it from the browser side of things, but you could get a new theme with a different default page icon.

OK, I hate the default icons. They are nuggin' fasty. So I want to change the icons. Problem is, the icons don't change unless you refresh the desktop.

I use a blank icon for when the bin is empty. All you see is "Recycle Bin", looks like there's no icon there. The full icon is a full moon. Which means there's stuff in the bin.

I know that you have to run regedit and get into the Registry. Then you have to navigate to the correct keys to slightly modify. I've done it before on XP. Problem is, I can't remember just where you need to go into the Registry. If memory serves, 1 key has to be edited and a zero put on the end. The other one is the same but with a 1.

Please take pity on me and help. I've had a real nasty week. 15hrs trying to repair because an update to hwinfo hosed my system. Had to take it to the shop. $200 later, it's working.

Won't go into details unless someone asks. Trust me, it was a full blown nightmare. Word to the wise. Run as fast as you can, do not walk from Best Buy. Do not pass Go and don't collect $200.

Answer:Custom icons for Recycle Bin

OK.
I wanted to use custom icons for full & empty recycle bin.
Finally, someone here enlightened me.
The icons need to be in a .dll file.
He made me a .dll file with the needed icons in it.
I am very grateful to him since I find doing something like that a bit over my head.
I have Microangelo & Resource Hacker.
I tried adding icons to existing .dll files & failed.
Creating a .dll file made my tiny brain hurt.
Just stupid I guess.

And I get this message when trying to use Display to change Desktop icons.
I Googled it & tried all suggestions to fix it & failed-

But with Microangelo on Display I can change the icons-

This is a bit complicated so I hope someone can help you with it further.

Hi all i'm new here so i hope i'm in the right section.
i could do with a little advice/help if poss i'm making a data disc for my cousin and i wish to have a customised folder icon for her, i have made the icon and changed the properties of the folder to display it, that's not the problem, the problem is that when i burn the folder to dvd and then reload on another pc the customised icon reverts to the default windows folder icon, i have tried putting the .ico file in the folder and pointing the folder to that file then burning but still the result is the same, i can bring up the customised icon in computer in place of dvd drive icon by using autorun and pointing to the .ico file both of which i burned in the root of the dvd.
however this is not exactly what i want to do, it is the folder from the disc which i would like to appear customised, i've been on this for over a day now and am about as far as i can go with my knowledge, i hope someone may be able to help me forward a little.
i'm running 32 bit vista premium. many thanks for any help you may be able to give.

Here's my problem:

I chose a couple of nice icons for 2 of my desktop folders (movies and homework), but whenever I put something into the folder, the icon resets back to the default empty folder. When I go to properties it still shows the custom icon as the one selected, but I have to reapply it every time. Anyone know why this is happening or how I can get the icons to lock?

Thanks

(Ps. Using Windows 7 Home)

Answer:Custom Icons Keep Resetting

Hello Crosby, and welcome to Seven Forums.

If these folders are not shortcuts, then try this:Move the folders to a different location in one of your other user folders.
Right click on the folder, and click on Send To and Desktop (create shortcut).
Now change the icon of the shortcut on the desktop.
Changing the icon of a shortcut of the folder usually works better than trying to change the icon of the folder itself.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Hi all,

I am looking for a bunch of free custom folder icons so I can change around some folders for fun. I was hoping to find a set a folder icons that are the exact same as mine in W7 only different colors. Anyone know of any free(safe) websites that has stuff like that? Does MG have anything like that.

Below is a pic of the folder icon I want......................Even is you can't find an exact match, I still want to know about some site that have this. I'm sure they are out there somewhere, I just can't find any right now.

Answer:Custom folder icons?

I have a folder of colored folders. It has been many years since I put them together so I am a bit fuzzy on the method I used. And there is something tricky about making new ones.

So, for what is worth here is my method...

Copy the Original Grey folder so you are working with a copy. Go to Control Panel>Folder Options and under the View tab>tick Show Hidden Files and also untick Hide system Files.

Now in your copy of the grey folder are two files one is an .ico that is the design of your folder and the other is desktop.ini which must remain. (The tricky part was for some reason you have to copy the whole folder rather then just copying the desktop.ini into a regular Windows folder you want to change.)

Now once you find a safe site that has some .ico files that are different color folders they will work if you use the method above.

I did just see this site that looks like it is reputable enough and has a free version which may be just what you need for basic colored folders. (It was probably a program like this that gave me my original grey folder and then I used my method above to get different designs.

When I create an Icon for a new web site it often has a custom design. THe custom icon replaces the standard windows icon on the desktop. That custom icon remains there until I reboot and then it goes away. It is replaced by the old standard icon. As an aside, this does not happen on my notebook computer.

Anyone know why this is happening?

Question: Lost Custom Icons

I am running XP Professional. My browser is Internet Explorer. To the left of most of the entries in my “favorites” has what I describe as a customized icon. For example Google has a blue “G”, ESPN has a red “E” and so on. Some web sites do not have one and in those cases there is the “e” for EXPLORER. My problem is the custom icons occasionally just go away and are replaced by the “e” EXPLORER icon. If I access that web site again, I can add it to my favorites and the custom icon appears again but only stays there for a few minutes. I am guessing that a temporary internet file is created which establishes it and then the file is removed or expires. How do I keep these customized icons from disappearing?

Ive downloaded an icon pack to change the folder icons in c:\users\swarfega but I cant seem to change Contacts and Desktop since the Customise tab is missing. Is there a way to change those two?

Also are there any dynamic icons that change according to the folder's contents like what the current yellow folder icons do?

Answer:Custom folder icons

You have to edit the registry to get the customize tab back:

(OPTION TWO) User Folders - Change Default Icon

For the contacts folder it is key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FolderDescriptions\{56784854-C6CB-462B-8169-88E350ACB882}\PropertyBag

In that key you should see a NoCustomize Dword with a value of 1, change to a 0 and you can now get the customize tab.

The Desktop folder properties are here:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FolderDescriptions\{B4BFCC3A-DB2C-424C-B029-7FE99A87C641}\PropertyBag

Edit the registry at your own risk

My ad agency is creating custom USB drives with explanatory files for a client.

We want each folder in the USB drive to have a custom icon which we designed.

No problem for Macs—the icon resource is embedded in the folder metadata.

For Windows, however, the custom icon is not embedding into the folder on the USB drive. The folders are drawing the .ico resource from the local PC. We tried putting all the .ico files on the USB drive, hiding them, and then making sure that the thumb drive's folders were looking to the .ico file on the drive itself.

However, this doesn't work reliably. When we put the USB drive into another Windows machine, the icons are defaulting to generic icons.

Whatever solution we come up with has to work on a variety of Windows platforms, from XP, Vista, to 7.

I've read sites that recommend putting an auto run file on the drive, but that only addresses a custom icon for the thumb drive itself, not folders on the drive.

Can anyone help? We're up against a deadline. Thank you!
