How do I force Win10 update to re-install Windows Media Player 12

Question: How do I force Win10 update to re-install Windows Media Player 12

Hi,

I'm not sure whether this issue should be listed under the Programs and Apps category. Perhaps you could put me right here.

I'm finding my WMP is not able to play my Audible .aa and .aax audiobooks, and will not import them. This has been a problem for the past 3-4 months, before that WMP (v12) worked OK. I've removed its library so that it can rebuild it suspecting a corrupt library, but when I point it to the area where my audiobooks are located, it does not recognize them. It's probably a DRM issue, and I was hoping that a re-install of WMP might help fix the problem. I believe this is best accomplished by letting a Win10 update to run, but perhaps this is wishful thinking. Alternatively, does WMP need to be authorized with Audible in order to play these files - if so, how do I do this?

I can't find WMP in the Programs and Features system tool, so can't remove it. I've tried installing WMP11 but this fails because the version in my system is a higher number (v12.0.14393.82). I've tried downloading WMP12 but the sites that claim they have it available, cause either my MacAfee or Malwarebytes Anti-Malware to block the download.

I would appreciate any suggestions you can offer me.

Paul.

Preferred Solution: How do I force Win10 update to re-install Windows Media Player 12

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: How do I force Win10 update to re-install Windows Media Player 12

I think MP12 is part of Windows. Go to Turn Windows features On/Off, deselect MP12, reboot, reselect it then reboot again. There are also 3 Troubleshooters for MP12 you can try.

Is there a way to force all sound from stereo to mono in Windows Media Player? I listen to various mp3's, cd's and most have stereo programming. However, at work, I'm only able to use one of my earbuds from my headphone set (to keep one ear free).

I would like to be able to force all stereo programming (cd's, mp3's) to mono output. Is there a plugin out there that will enable this?

Thank you

I have recently been getting a message to update to adobe flashplayer pro to view site and have been also getting a message to update the media player. I looked at the versions  I am running and they are the latest. I was told to do the Adobe while I was navigating to this page just a moment ago. When I am at some sites I have also gotten a box that says my media player is infected and needs to clean files. While in MSN.com home page I have gotten a poor pc performance box that comes up and it is kind of shaking when it appears. I don't know if this is an infection or what but am very wary of this type of stuff after fighting with other infections in the past. I posted this in another forum and was instructed to possibly try this one. Please let me now if you may need more information and I will reply. Thank you for your time and efforts. Jack Perrin.

Delete everything out of C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download
In Windows Updates, Click to search for updates, leave the window open but dont hit search yet
Open command prompt as Admin and type "wuauclt.exe /updatenow" but DONT HIT ENTER
In Windows Update, Click to search
While it is searching hit enter on the command prompt
You're now downloading W10

This is so you can force the update if your wave has been selected yet.

I have Windows XP Pro., sp2.

I use Windows Media Player 10 to listen to music files. I put all my files and folders in My Music. Media Player automatically adds albums (a folder and sub-folder, the sub-folder having the music files) to the library listed in Media Player.

But if I add a single file to an existing folder (album) it doesn't show up in the Media Player library. Is there a way to make it show up?

I am a music downloader.
It used to be that WMP12 would update the mp3 music folders to where the folder contents would read as follows:

01 'Track Name'
02 'Track Name'
03 'Track Name'

and so on...

This is no longer the case. WMP will not update my media library files, although it says it does. I have cleared the cache, cleared all .wmdb files, and have completely removed all 9000 plus songs and have them reloaded. I've also uninstalled and reinstalled WMP12 to no avail.

I can manually correct the files myself, but I shouldn't have to.
What setting am I missing that needs to be set so my media library will automatically update?

Thanks

Answer:Windows Media Player will not update media library

Do you have retrieve additional information from the internet checked in options ?

Starting Yesterday morning windows update has been trying to install an update called "Upgrade to Windows 10 Home". When i click on check for updates it says no updates are available & none of the recently installed updates had that name. When i looked at the update history it says it failed to install this update 8 times between yesterday morning & today. I tried uninstalling the updates that added the free upgrade to windows 10 thinking it would make it stop but it didn't because windows update tried installing windows 10 before it asked me to reinstall the updates that i uninstalled. I reinstalled the updates because removing them didn't solve my annoying problem. The update numbers are KB2990214 & KB3035583 I'll post a screenshot of the update info & hopefully somebody can help me solve this issue.

A rather nasty virus which was not recognized as such by anything but ASO's Startup/Autorun Manager necessitated a hd format and complete system re-install. I am quite pleased that, on the whole, everything is back up to snuff. All updates have been processed. When I attempt to re-install Windows Media Player 11, however, I repeatedly become frustrated by a "general access denied" error. There is only one user profile on my system and I cannot find/remember how to check and/or set access permissions. If anyone has any suggestions as to how I can manage to get WMP 11 to re-install, I would be extremely grateful. I use this computer in my work as a Sound Technician for a church and at a community theatre. I need to be able to use the features available in WMP 11 which are not found in WMP 10. Thanks in advance!

Like many another person, I too attempt to upgrade the DRM info only to get a "Can't Upgrade This Component".  But I also noticed something else.
When the process fails and I close IE, on my desktop is a folder.  What's odd about it is that it has non-english characters for a name, which look like kanji when viewed through Windows Explorer.  And when I click on the HDS file in it and it
goes out to the 'Net to tell me what an HDS file is, I get a message that there is no page for my language.

As far as I can tell, I'm not using any other language in IE (I use French when I use Chrome) or in Windows generally. I get the feeling that if I got the English version I'm supposed to be downloading all my problems would be solved.
Any suggestions why the page with the rights stuff on it thinks I'm not speaking English? (or more to the point, where can I download the right version)?
TIA

Hi JCD23 and welcome to TSF.

What Service Pack do you currently have? WMP11 requires XP to have Service Pack 2 as one of the minimum requirements.

To see what Service Pack you have go: Start>Control Panel>System. Under the General tab you should see which Service Pack you ave listed at the top.

Can you also read the Microsoft article here for more information that may help with the update as well as saving certain settings you may wish to keep.

Whenever I attempt to upgrade from WMP10 to WMP11 it freezes then stops during the Installation period. I have no clue why, and when using WMP10 to play movies, I often find that I have one or more CODECS missing required to play this movie, however, the moment WMP sends a request to recieve the right CODECS it says, "error downloading CODEC..." and it does this every single time. I'm finding I can't do anything Movie wise now because of this problem, any help would be appreciated if anyone can, thanks.

Thanks.

When in full screen mode there is a button up at the top left you can click on it to autohide the bars or show the bars. Autohide hides them in a few seconds if there is no mouse activity.

My aunt gave me her computer to "fix". It was very slow and very infected. It only had 256MB ram and the DVD Drive wouldnt open. I've cleaned it up, added ram (2gig), and a new dvd drive. Its running pretty good now but Im having an issue with Windows Media Player. To start, it has a Napster button that Id like to get rid of. Also, its WMP 10 and I would like to change to WMP 11. I have tried to do this with Windows update but it doesnt work. It completes the update process and asks me to restart but when I restart I still have WMP 10.

I tried uninstalling WMP 10 with Add/Remove Windows Components. It uninstalls fine. Then I tried installing WMP11 again but it still wont install. I get this error message:

It was not possible to complete setup; For more assistance, click Web Help.

It was not possible to complete setup; Windows Media Player 11 was not installed. Restart Windows and then run Windows Media Player Setup again.

So I had previously disabled the Media Features in Windows 7... I just didn't need them because I use k-Lite. But recently I found out that I cant play WMV files; they simply freeze in Media Player Classic. However, they play fine in the Zune software. I figure this is because I disabled WMP12... so I figured I would re-install it in the Windows Features section.

However, I instead get an undefined error and it doesn't install. Is there a service required to re-install WMP? Or is there a way for me to play WMV files in MPC?

Answer:Can't Re-install Windows Media Player 12...

You could try running sfc /scannow in an elevated command prompt, see if that fixes things.

Personally I would leave the installed codecs alone and move away from k-lite to windows 7 codecs. Unlike k-lite, the author of win7 codecs states that he does not replace any codec already installed but simple augments and adds to them.

hi folks this one has me whipped so far and I've never seen it personally, although there are lots of hits on the web about similar issues.

i have a fresh install of Windows XP Media Center edition [supposedly] and SP3 of Win xp Pro. I've done a few updates since SP3 but I'm not a big fan of mass installing all that stuff. But I tried to install WMP 11, and it just failed with a message that something in Media Center needed updating. I honestly though Media Center was in the morgue? I cannot find the claimed Media Center SP2 Rollup anywhere on Microsoft's website.

I tried to install WMP 10 and had different results. The install seemed to go normal, I rebooted, and then went looking for it and its not there. just not.

I have other players, VLC and MPC, no issues with those.

Anyone have a clue about this?

Hello Keith and welcome to the forums

Windows Media Player is built in to Windows and cannot be uninstalled/reinstalled. I have written you a batch file to disable the WMP services and to check your system for problems, here is the code:

Code:
@ECHO ON

sc stop ehRecvr
sc config ehRecvr start= manual
sc stop ehSched
sc config ehSched start= manual
sc stop WMPNetworkSvc
sc config WMPNetworkSvc start= manual

sfc /scannow
Please download the attached batch file to your desktop and run it as an administrator

I'm trying to download the latest codecs for WMP 11 but I'm having a problem. After downloading the software and during the install, a screenpops up, the agreement and whatever. Well it will not show the "decline" or "accept" buttons at the bottom. Scrolling down will not show it either. Is there a screen adjustment that I need to do. This is the only thing thats keeping me from finishing.

I have a new win10 install, and tried the new splash player, but can't even start it because it crashes... Also tried the previous version 1.6 but neither that one does not work at all. (hasn't any problem under win7)
Image about problem
any idea what could be the problem?

Answer:Splash media player crashes immediately under Win10

Hi, I'm running the Anniversary edition - ok on that. What's your Windows build? (Windows key + R, winver)

Crash- have a look at your event log or your Reliability History and see what that tells you.

Was there a specific error message? Please be exact in the wording - you can then search using the error message.

Long story so ill give a quick summary.
My gfriends pc wouldnt connect to the net. the router was ok and the pc was detecting it and said connected 100mbps but int explorer couldnt connect to it. even the 192.16 etc. I tried everything scans etc but nothing so i restored windows ( XP home ed) to the day it was bought. after much pain i managed to get the internet back on but now Media player wont work. I updated everything i could think of (windows update etc) but when i updated to MP 11 I got an error message. I cant remember the exact message but it was something like DNIN50.exe failed?. I clicked ok to continue and it finished the installation but when its opened if you try and use it it freezes and cant be switched off. ive tried rolling it back and re-installing it but get errors every time.
P.S I ran scans with MG tools, combofix etc, as advised on MG, as i suspected the original problem might be a virus. Cant remember the name of the first scanner but it found 11 problems (nothing i recognised as serious) Combofix wouldnt run, so i continued as advised. after i ran MGtools i was able to scan with Combofix (dont have the logs to hand, will add later if needed) I restarted the pc and re scanned it ( nothing found ) but Media player still wont work. Thanks for reading.:confused

While using Overdrive Media Console to download audio books for
my Zune, I recently encountered a box stating I need to install Windows Media Player Security Update 2.5.0.1. I have tried to download this update from several sources including Microsoft and have not been able to do so. I called Microsoft and HP(I'm using a Pavillion running Windows 7), they were of no help at all. Any suggestions that could be offered to help install the update would be much appreciated. Thank you.

The update is not for Windows Media Player but for the Overdrive program. Updates may be accessed through the Tools menu.

Hello,

I recently clicked a prompt to update Windows Media Player 11 (the update that changes all your colourful circular media icons to a white and blue icon (that looks like a Mac media file icon), and makes the colour of the minimized player match the maximized one, which WMP11 didn't do before). Anyway, it was all working properly until I saw that there was a process called 'wmpnetwk.exe' using 10,492 K in the Task Manager. I read up on it and a process information site listed that it was non-essential and could be ended (down to user preference) (I always end pointless processes from task manager to squeeze extra performance out of my system). The process kept restarting itself everytime I ended it. At this point the Media Player still worked normally, despite fiddling with this process. I went into the 'Services' section of Window's 'Administrative Tools' and stopped the 'WMP network service' and changed it from automatic to manual start-up. Upon starting the computer the next day the media player shows a message that says "Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device", and saying that there "might not be a sound device installed on my computer, blah, blah, blah". This occurs every time I try to play a music file (video files play, but have no sound). There is no problem with my soundcard or drivers and I have full sound in all other programs.

I have updated to SP2 for my XP Professional version and received all updates in between; however when I try to update to Media Player 10 or 11 it says I do not have a valid product key....Why would it give me its "biggie" which was SP2 and not Media Player? I bought this computer from an individual but as far as I know I am "valid". Was valid enough to get the SP2! Does anyone know the answer?

Answer:Windows Media Player Update..Invalid Key?

Hi Jaycolye !

Did you get the Windows licence from the guy who sold you the computer as well ? According to Microsoft's EULA a licence key can only be used for one computer, which means that when someone sells a computer on which Windows XP is still installed he has to give away the licence for it as well. Maybe the seller has used the same licence to install Windows on different computers. It's a bit weird that WGA let you install SP2 but won't let you update to WMP 11 but there still may be some legal issues.

With the original licence (could be on a sticker on the computer somewhere or in the XP CD box or manual) you can phone Microsoft to check that that key is valid and not used by anyone else. There should be some instructions on how to do that when WGA detects an invalid product key.

You can also give the Key update tool from Microsoft a try :

I am using Overdive Media Console, attempting to run Windows Security Update on Windows Media Player. I am running Windows 7X64 and have WMP12.

From what I've seen on the web, I am certainly not the first person to run into problems here. Yet any of the "fixes" I have found do not work for me.

When I open Overdrive, it tells me I need the security update for WMP. It also says that my version of security is 2.9.0.1, and to click here to update. When I do this, nothing happens. Absolutely nothing. I have used the Microsoft web link for the update;it tells me it is updating, then that the update has been successful. Yet when I go back to the Media Console, same message about update needed.

I have tried this in the "normal" mode, have also tried it as "administrator", both in Overdrive and also in IE. I have also gone to C: ProgramData/Microsoft/DRM and changed the name of the DRM file.( I do note that my DRM file is empty, so I can't imagine what magic this would work anyway.) I have modified Windows Firewall to allow Overdrive and all instances of WMP. I have disabled my adblocker. I have run sfc/ scannow with no problems found. I have emptied my internet cache.

All of this to no avail. And it's driving me nuts!
All I want to do is download a WMA file from my Public Library.

I would appreciate any help you might offer.
TIA,
Georgia

Answer:Windows Media Player 10 wont Install!

Hello and Welcome to TSF

Try using the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility. As long as you installed the application using the Windows Installer, this utility will remove all the folders, files, registry keys, and entries from your system and allow you to start over with a clean slate.

Download the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility
Locate and run msicuu2.exe to install the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility.
Locate and launch the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility on the Start menu.
From the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility window, locate the application in the list and click the Remove button.
Once the application has been removed, click the Exit button to close the utility.

Now try to reinstall the application

I have tried this numerous times and it just goes through the installation process, then after it has imported the media libray, the whole thing just goes off without giving an error message or that the installation was successful.

I have tried to uninstall it too but it only gives me the option to rollback. Even doing this won't work. No media plays through it, yet it's on my all programs list and gives me the option to open music/film with it but nothing happens.

Could it be that I need SP3 for XP as I've heard that messes your system up.

I just installed XP Home SP2 fresh on my new laptop and did all the Windows Updates, and I see that I have Windows Media Player 9. I had WMP 10 on my old laptop, and I want to go to that. I'm downloading WMP 10 right now from the Microsoft website, but I have some questions.1. Do I just double-click the WMP 10 .exe once I have it and it will install over WMP 9? Or is there something else I need to do first?2. I noticed that I had no sound in my .avi files in WMP 9 -- will installing WMP 10 correct that? (It said I was missing some kind of audio codec.) The files play fine with sound on my old laptop with WMP 10.3. I also noticed that WMP 9 keeps trying to connect to something (shown in ZA) every time I open it. WMP 10 did not cause this to happen on my old laptop. Is there some setting that I need to change to stop this? (It might just be trying to access something on my computer. I'm not sure... But I did uncheck all the boxes for the highest privacy in all those options that come up when you first open WMP 9.)Any help is appreciated -- thanks!

Answer:Does Windows Media Player 10 Install Over The Top Of Vers. 9?

Yes it does but you can still re-install WMP 9 if you would like and yes .avi files do not have audio with out the proper codec which I could not get work properly but could work fine for you the best way to find out is to try.

Hello,

I am currently using Windows Media Player 11 and I am having issues with album information not displaying after I download music from amazon.com and after I rip a CD, it only shows the song title. I have to go through each song and select Find album information to get it. Another problem is that the music time does not display.

I've tried deleting my temporary internet files, deleting the WMP database from the Media Player folder from Start > run. I also resetting options from the Library and Privacy tab, and also resetting Internet Explorer settings from the control panel, and rebooting my machine.

I've been having this problem for several weeks now and I can't seem to figure out why . Can you help me? My OS is Windows XP and sometimes I connect to the internet through VPN and off VPN. My ISP is ATT.

I recently reformatted my hard drive for my Windows 7 computer. I made a backup of everything as reccommended. When it restarted I moved everything back to where it came from, including all my music back into the music folder. However, when I run Windows
Media Player, it will not automatically add my music into the Library, it will only add it if I play it. Even wiht it added, when i try to make a playlist It gives me an error message, saying "Windows Media Player encountered a problem while creating
or saving the playlist." I have looked on the forums to find a solution, tried all the ones that worked for others but to no avail. Is there anything I can do to fix this problem?

Answer:Windows Media Player won't rebuild or update automatically

Ok so all the libraries have their respective folder as a location and as the default save location. I restored the defaults in the music library. It create playlists fine now, but still wont update automatically, so do I just have to  play
each song to add it to my library?
I suggest that you try resetting the media library. First note that resetting the library will make you lose all current play counts, and possibly ratings too. Then, follow these steps:
- Reboot the PC.
- Go to Start, type services.msc in the Search field, and press Enter. In Services, find the
Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service. If its status is
Started, double-click the service and click
Stop.
- Go to Start, type %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft in the Search field, and press Enter. This folder will open up in Windows Explorer.
- In this folder, delete the Media Player folder. If you can't see the folder, then it's probably hidden. Set Explorer to show hidden files and folders, and to show protected system files.
- Start WMP, your library will have been reset and will be rebuilt. Check if the issue still occurs.

About 20 sec later, desktop blanks then recovers, but now with no icons near clock. 20 sec later this repeats; another 20 sec and Dr Watson message appears - 'needs to close etc'.This occurs for all users.I can now only run in safe mode.Have tried setting up a new user(administrator), but this does not work either.

Windows update KB2847077
causes Media Player 12.07601.17514 to lose track of all settings and libraries

Double clicking on a video media - opens a first time window that asks to use recommended or custom settings.

(this is catastrophic for me as I use Media Player's DLNA connectivity)

This has happened twice to me - first from a standard Windows Update (yesterday 12/11/2013) - I had to do a system restore to before the update, then figured out that it was KB2847077 - so updated everything else except for KB2847077 - my PC and media player were just fine after the restart.

Last night for some reason that update was installed again, from one of my vulnerability scans (despite me specifically hiding it in Windows Update) - so this morning my Media Player was messed up again - did another system restore before that module update, and everything is back to normal again.

I'm running Win10n 64 bit, Home built PC running 16g Ram etc.

My machine updated to windows 10 without me saying a word a while back.. And prior to having a forced lobotomy and upgrading to Win 10 - I had Media Player and all was happy in the world and everything worked..

I am now missing Windows Media Player... I also cant install it. I need it for a Garmin Mapping program I use.

Thinking that the 500,000,000,000 hits on google from poor suffering people like myself with this issue, they all say this fixes it, I though yea this is too easy eh...

So I've gone and installed
"The Media Feature Pack for N and KN versions of Windows 10 will install Media Player and related technologies on a computer running Windows 10 N or Windows 10 KN editions.
For further information, please see http://support.microsoft.com and query the Knowledge Base for the article number KB3010081."
https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/down....aspx?id=48231

But after the install which should installed Windows Media Player etc - it doesn't.
It appears to work fine - it appears to stall. But not everything installs.

Shutdown... wait few mins, reboot... and it will all work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

FAIL..............

When I go to the C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Media Player folder, and compare with my other machine on the desk here, there are no files in the Windows Media Player root directory.

If I try and just copy from 1 machine to the other, then run either the setup_wm.exe or wmplayer... Read more

Wow! Five hundred billion hits, this Windows 10 must really be crap thinking that each and every of 7 billion people on earth have posted over 70 times about how Windows sucks!

No fan of this Windows 10 garbage.

This garbage, as 499,999,991,396 other of those Google hits you found about non-functioning Windows 10 is a typical user error caused by yourself, user not bothering to read details and instructions before downloading, installing or trying a feature.

Let's have a look of the wrong Media Feature Pack for Windows N Editions download page which I bet my shirt you used to download the pack:

(Click to enlarge, read the highlighted part.)
The "garbage" as you put it is there clearly to see. You have downloaded wrong Media Feature Pack, KB3010081. That pack only works with Windows 10 prior to November 2015 update, the correct pack for Windows 10 version 1511 and later (build 10586 and later) being KB3099229. Link on that wrong outdated page takes you directly to correct download: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3099229

I think that in your case, to avoid again a wrong download, it is important to remind you that you should select the KB3099229_x64.msu file for your 64 b... Read more

Well, I know this is an old problem and I overcame it once before but like the ignoramus I sometimes am I failed to bookmark or otherwise save the solution. I know it involves either creating or copying a folder from C\Program Files x86\Mozilla (Mozilla Firefox?), perhaps a plugin folder, and then copying that folder into "Browser" but I can't seem to do it. It may also involve a missing wmp dll file if I recall but I'm not certain. I saw the solution once on one of Interoperability Bridges' webpages but I can't find it now. I've been to the Mozilla Forums to no avail. I've searched this forum and couldn't find any answers. Does anyone have the solution?

Thank you in advance for your time and any assistance provided. If I fail to quickly acknowledge your replies it's because I'm currently in China, 12 hours ahead of Eastern Standard time U.S.A., and when you're awake I'm, in all probability, sleeping.

Help please, from a Technoramus!!!

Hi All,

Hope you are having a splendid day. I work for the Gov'ment in SA on a PC that does not give us 'administrator rights'. Quite rationale, but not all of us are fools. The guy who had the PC before me made himself an administrator and taught me the basics before he left for OZ - PS his name was not Jake...

Anyways, I tried to install Windows Media Player 11, but then sound died ( an me sole) and troubleshooting shot out error message: C00D11B1 Tried fixits suggeted with no luck. What now????????????????

Jakes

Post moved to it`s own thread.

Answer:install Windows Media Player 11, but then sound died

If you can log onto Windows under administrator, get into the Control Panel, System, Hardware, Device Manager and look for a yellow mark in the sound devices list. Uninstall this "yellow" device and reboot your computer. See if your sound returns

Are Windows 8.1 playlists created in Media Player automatically imported into the Windows 10 music player?

Answer:are media player playlists imported into windows 10 install

No, as Groove is a separate music player. Playlists from Xbox Music would be imported, not Media Player.

Recently I was obliged to update my media player (to run Netflix direct). Prior to this I had the oldest version that was compatible with most stuff. It was set not to update, not to brag to the world about nothing, not to check on me or the internet or under my toes or sniff my ass or broadcast my address or let salesman know my breakfast preferences. All that appears to have come to an end.

I am getting spammed - by my own email address - with a whole slew of crap... but only recently.

Maybe it wasn't the media player update. Maybe I gave the wrong vendor my real address (tough to order online without it). Maybe an old vendor decided to sell it to spam-r-us.

Anyone else had this happen to them with the latest media player update?

Answer:Fresh Spam with Latest Windows Media Player Update?

Spammed by your own e-mail address? Sounds more like spyware/malware/virus to me. I've never seen an increase in spam with updating any WMP update or any software update for that matter.
