Preferred Solution: laptop hinge repair

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

It is bad enough that Dell makes a product with a defect affecting many of their unuts (bad hinge design/manufacture), but then makes a statement that part is specifically not covered under any of their warranties.
C/mon Dell.  You created the problem, man-up to it.

So my computer won't turn on now thanks to the infamous faulty hinge design which ended up breaking the plastic on the left side and one of the little bolts ended up causing the complete malfunction of the fan.The last message I got was that the computer had to shut down because due to the fact that the fan no longer worked. So now my question is, where can I get this fixed? How much does HP charge? It is out of warranty but still this shouldn't have happened, they should at least repair my computer for low cost. It really is a great computer but how much to get this fixed? Who can fix this fan and get it running again?I tried and can't get all the pieces taken apart at the keyboard. I need to replace the fan and maybe some of the other plastic pieces though I heard HP way overcharges. I would rather fix this excellent computer than have to buy a new one. Also where can someone find used parts for these dv7's?

I sent in my sl500 laptop to be repaired. The issue is that the left hinge between the base and the screen just started wiggling and seemed loose. It is my honest opinion that this is due to normal wear and use of the machine, which does nothing but sit on my desk. However, when the repair technician got the machine last week he has decided that it is a billable repair. I have now been waiting for four business days for any information as to how he comes to this conclusion. When these were IBM products and IBM service standards this would never have happened. My family has been employed with IBM since 1964 and we have never had such trouble with customer service. My laptop is now hostage at the service depot until the technician decides to provide me with photos that will apparantly show me how the issue is my fault and therefore not covered under the warranty which I purchased with the laptop a few years ago.To add, apparently when you call to talk with a supervisor they do not have one on duty during all the hours the service center is open for phone calls. One would think that that if you are open for business that st least a supervisor would also be on duty.

Answer:SL500 needs hinge repair - billable?

I have been raped by customer service.  after several days of waiting for checking, I finally received photos of the laptop which the repair technician says proves that the repair is billable.  Now it's my word against his and I am the one with the short end of the stick. I HAVE NEVER BEEN SO ANGRY BEFORE IN MY LIFE at the customer service I am receiving.  The machine in the photos looks NOTHING like what it did when I put it in the box.  There is absolutely NO way that I caused the damage that he claims I did. I am now at the mercy of whenever a supervisor wants to call me back to discuss the photos and for me to continue to plead my case.  This has been the absolute worst customer service I have every experienced in my life.  When Lenovo was IBM this would have never happened.  I have been an IBMer since 1969 with members of my family having worked there for 40+ years.

I just get a brief glimpse of the Windows 7 logo and it reboots. I've tried the repair option but that fails, with either the internal HD or by using the installation DVD.

I cannot boot into safe mode. The only drive I see with command prompt is x:\

I removed the battery and the HD and sent the laptop in for a repair to one of the hinges on the display. When I got it back, I put it all back together and voila... it won't boot. It won't repair. It won't boot to safe mode. I can't run chkdsk.

The only option I see right now is to remove the HD and see if I can pull off the data using an external drive enclosure. Then reinstall Windows7 and all the programs and data.

Any other options I have overlooked?

Answer:After repair to hinge, system won't start

Clearing the CMOS may be worth a shot. Remove the battery and power adapter then press and hold the power button for 15-20 seconds.

The magnesium rollcage on the left side of the display has broke when I tried closing the laptop. The hinge got somehow stuck, and I coulnd't close the lid, so I tried to apply a tiny bit of force. Unfortunately, being a very fragile and soft material, magnesium (along with the plastic part that holds the bottom left screw) broke. I have managed to get the left hinge moving again, but now the display is being held by only right hinge, which isn't enough to support a 15 inch screen. Oh and closing it is a pain. Lenovo say that they can't fix it for some odd reason, even though it's still on the warranty. (probably because they can't understand what i'm trying to explain). Though I didn't open it yet, I can conclude from looking at it that I'm going to need a new rollcage, new outer LCD shell (that black top lid), and a new set of hinges. I can replace it myself, fully understanding it'd void my warranty, as long as I get my laptop working again. I need it for work. Where can I get a new rollcage, outer shell and a pair of hinges? Thank you. This is a Thinkpad T500-2082 which still has 243 days of warranty.

Hi,

Just wanted to determine my risk....  So I bought a Y40-80 laptop for my wife a little less than a year ago, and just from normal opening and closing, the left hinge has failed and eventually cause the cover to separate from the lcd.  I'm holding it in place using a big metal clip at the moment.

As far as I am concerned, this was the result of a manufacturing defect; I have owned many laptops over the years and have never had a hinge failure like this, let alone have it happen in less than a year.  It was not dropped, or abused in any way.  Looking on line I see a lot of complaints about this, e.g., on Y50 but not my specific model.

Anyway, when I chatted online with Lenovo support, after I sent them a picture, the guy warned me that it may not be covered under warranty since it is "physical damage"; I never knew that this sort of cop out language existed with respect to warranties on computers.  Accidental damage I agree, but this is clearly a defect in the product.

They sent me a box to mail it to the depot, and I just wanted to find out what would happen if they refused to fix it under warranty.  There is no way I am paying to fix this problem, but I'm concerned that they will hold my machine hostage if we reach an impasse.

Will Lenovo demand money from me to send the machine back?  If so, any idea what it will be?  I'm just trying to determine how much risk I'm willling to t... Read more

Answer:Y40-80 - Warranty repair for broken hinge

A little cart before horse here?  I think you're working yourself up about this when it probably isn't necessary.   They have to cover their asses and from a pic there's probably no way to tell if you sat on the thing when it was open.  If it's a design flaw (and I'm pretty positive it is), the tech will know it and your laptop will either be repaired or replaced.  I have many issues with Lenovo quality, but for a large corporation, their support has been alright.   Stop thinking about the laptop and it'll be back before you know it, keep obsessing on it like a pot of water that won't boil and it will feel like forever.  Good luck!

Its really annoying bc its doing it constantly. How can I fix this. Had this unit in for a warranty repair in January. At that time the right hinge was causing the case to seperate. It has made it to the beginning of April, and now the left side is starting to seperate. This unit never leaves the house, and has never been dropped, yet the excessive drag opening the unit normally creates seems to be causing issues. Clearly a design flaw.

Having recently bought pretty much the most expensive XPS 13 you can buy I was pretty disappointed when I dropped in on the carpet (gently) and the hinge broke - stuff happens. It's my primary computer so I just want to get it fixed as quick as possible - money is not really an issue.
After paying $300 for the repair I now find out, after over a week, that it's going to take ANOTHER 7 - 14 working days to fix it.
That's totally unacceptable for me and, despite being a loyal DELL business customer for over 15 years that's the last one I will buy. How DELL think that  3 - 4 week turnaround on a PAID repair for a computer under warranty is acceptable I don't know.

Yep, a total newbie here.  Use a T61P for desktop and portable... before a T40p (and I don't remember the one before that , LOL).  So, got my hands on a slightly damaged X24 from a corporate recylce pile, I would LOVE to put it to use as an internet surfboard, and possibly streaming music source.  It's an amazing little pad. I'm looking for hinge screws that fasten the hinge on to the LCD screen. I need the screws that hold the screen to part (2, the hinges) in the image here: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-39710 Where would I find out if that part (#2) includes the screws, or if the screws are available separately? Thank you.

Answer:Repair parts wanted... X24 hinge screws.

Lenovo sent me a whole bag full of screws for free two years ago.  I was unhappy with the Intel WiFi minicard that came with my X60 so I bought an Atheros card.  The Lenovo installation instructions say that you should not re-use the screws that were there originally.  So I called Lenovo/IBM customer service, and they sent me a bag full of screws.  Actually seven bags.  I would describe them as follows with the length of the threaded portions:1. black flat phillips head 1/8"2. black pan phillips head 3/16"3. black pan phillips head 1/4"4. black slotted head 1/8"5. silver phillips head 1/8"6. silver phillips flat head 1/4"7. silver jackscrews 1/4" It says on the outer bag FRU No. 41V9754You probably need to find the maintenance manual for the X24 and see what the FRU number is for the bag of screws. If you want to try some of these screws, and if this web site supports private messages, then send me a private message.

Hey guys, the right hinge on my Lenovo G570 is broken. Right now it's pretty much lifting the top casing of my computer and my monitor is sitting askew. I tried calling Lenovo to get an estimate, but they told me I had to send it in and pay for shipping as well as an $80 dollar processing fee. I'm just curious as to how much parts and labor might come out to. What have you guys recieved for estimates?

Answer:Lenovo G570 hinge repair estimate

hi yutxz,

Welcome to the Forums.

The repair cost will depend on the parts that are needed to be replaced. If for example, the hinge, and the plastic part that holds the hinge (base cover) are broken, the service centers to replace the following parts:

Base Cover (for models with HDMI)
Base Cover (for models without HDMI)
LCD Hinge

So say you have the hdmi base cover+hinge model+one hour labor (say $25), then you're probably looking at a $85 quote (shipping / taxes excluded). Note that this is just an example. The reason why the tech. ask you to send it in is because the person in charge of the repair needs to see the damage and quote the necessary parts for the repair.

Hope this gives you an idea.

Regards,
neokenchi

Hey guys,
After 6 months of use, the left hinge on my 7559 has decided to give up.
I've followed official manual to open the laptop and see what wrong.
Here's a photo and a video showing how 2 of the 3 screws holding the left hinge have failed:

drive.google.com/open
As you can see, the yellow copper thingies that hold the screws (not sure how they're properly called) have been pulled out of the bottom case. Only one screw that goes through fan and into palmrest is still holding up.
Could you give any advice on the best way to repair it? Would I need to get a replacement bottom case or is there way to just get new yellow copper thingies and put them in the sockets in the bottom case?

Cheers!

To any staff, Long story short, the hinge on my Thinkpad T61p were getting loose (it was moving back and forth) and upon a quick serach, apparently it was a known issue on these laptops. As my warranty was nearing its end, I quickly called Lenovo to have this repaired. Because I was promised that this repair is going to be finished within 5-7 business days, I decided to go ahead and send it away depite that my major requires it 24/7. I've received a box next day and I sent it away on Jan 9th, 2008. I called in today to see what's happening but this employee, who rather got really irritated that I called in, couldnt find my info for 30 mins. After finally finding my info, he mentioned that the hinge is backordered. I politely asked him when I can get the laptop back but he said it could take days.. weeks or possibly up to months.  The sole reason why I sent this laptop for a repair was because they said the turnaround repair would be fast and I believed his word. It's quite dissapointing to hear these kind of delays in repair process when I need this laptop ASAP. There are actually 2 ongoing cases regarding my laptop but none of them are being solved at the moment. The 6 cell battery, which just died a few days ago, was replaced by a 9 cell from Lenovo. I called about this issue as well and hopefully they can get this straightened out. How long does it take for a "back ordered" parts to arrive at the depot? It's really hard to imagine how the depo... Read more

I have two issues that I hope you can assist me with.  The first paragraph below is for the first issue.  The second paragraph below is for the second issue.  I appreciate any assistance you could provide.

On 4/2/2016, I placed an order for a new display back cover and a set of hinges in the HP Parts Store.  My HP [personal information removed].  Total order cost = $233.91 in US dollars.  I paid for the parts already via credit card and the parts were delivered to me.  A friend of mine repairs laptops as a full time occupation.  She was planning to help me repair the broken laptop hinge and replace the back cover so part of the replacement hinge would be protected when I transport the computer.  Unfortunately, my friend found out that her sister was diagnosed with terminal cancer after I received the parts from the HP Parts Store.  My friend has been spending lots of time caring for her ill sister and her elderly parents in their 80s.  She is unable to help me repair the right hinge and back cover of my laptop.  The parts have not been touched and they are still in the boxes.  I would like to return the parts and receive a credit applied to my charge account; however the HP return policy states that parts must be returned in 14 days.  The HP Parts Store also charges a restocking fee.  Can you assist with this return transaction?  I would prefer to not pay the restocking fee.

Answer:G560 laptop won't boot. Start up Repair Cannot Repair this automatically

hi lobe29,

Try the following:

1. On the system recovery option's command prompt, type:

bootrec.exe  /fixmbr
bootrec.exe  /fixboot
bootrec /scanos
bootrec.exe  /rebuildbcd

2,. After typing the above commands, close command prompt and perform a startup repair (1 or 2 times) until you get a message "Startup repair didn't find any errors" then reboot the PC (Windows should now startup loading).

3. If the problem persist, you may need to do a Repair Install on the OS (follow step 8-22). To do this, you will need to burn a Windows 7 ISO whicn you can get here or here.

Hope this helps

Answer:Unable to repair my laptop using installation/repair disc (.iso)

As you are at Sevenforums I suppose you're talking about Win 7.
Please give us more info about your hardware (Laptop) as brand, model, amount of memory etc.
Is your windows disk from the laptop manufacture?
Do you have a backup of all your data files?
If you're trying to do a clean install, don't you have a BIOS factory recovery option (beware, it formats your HDD)?

I am in major crisis mode because my laptop is stuck in startup mode and can't repair itself. I've tried a few command tricks but most of them require safe mode, which I can't access at all. Also, many threads have mentioned reinstalling windows 7, which would be fine if my disk drive hadn't burnt out recently. I am terrified of losing all my files so I don't want to toy around with anything. Thoughts?

Answer:Startup Repair on laptop cannot repair computer automatically.

Welcome DelaneyNicole.

Sounds like a shame that you do not have a backup of your files.

Some things you could try:
> Try accessing windows repair from boot (press F8 and select the recovery option),
> Borrow a disc drive from another system (maybe a friends?),
> Use a bootable USB drive with say some version of Linux on it to access your files.

Do you know what happens to cause this problem?

Regards
Stephen

Hello,
I had tried to send you a friend request a few days ago so that I could message you but I'm afraid you didn't see it. Anyways, I've been having problems with the hinge on my laptop and you had mentioned in http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/t/19622428?pi41097=4  (which is closed now so I can't reply to you there) that you could potentially help a group of other people that had the same exact issue.
Even though I'm a few months late to the party, I was hoping you might be able to help me out as well-I have the exact same problem as everyone else that posted in that thread.
Thank you very much!

Answer:Hinge problems on my laptop

Matt,
Do you have an Inspiron 5547 / 5548?   If so please reply with the symptoms that you have had with the notebook,  did you notice any sounds from the system, in creaks or pops especially when closing the lid? Is this something that was happening all of the time or something recent, are they any signs of damage on the system plastics by the hinge?  Have you contacted tech support in your area and if so where they able to help?

Question: G570 Laptop hinge

The hinge connecting my monitor to the main body suddenly decided to break off, so I called up the tech support line.I was greeted with loud noises and plenty of foreign language. You'd think that they were having a party in the office and not even doing their job properly at all. The person that I spoke to sounded confused to what I meant by laptop hinge and how my monitor is now sitting slightly askew, etc.  Fast forwarding the introductory phone talk with the representative. I was then told that my 7 month old laptop's warranty had apparently 'expired'.Becuase, apparently the warranty starts as the laptop leaves the manufactuter. So basically, who knows how long your laptop has been sitting at your reseller before you purchase it. Skipping a little more of the phone conversation, he proceeds to tell me that a box will be sent to my nominated address but doesn't supply much, if any other information that is useful, other than the fact that if I had been the one to damage it, I would have to pay. What I want to know is, in the event that I AM quoted for the repair of the laptop (which I see as highly unlikely) and I refuse to get it repaired, who's liable for the expense of the laptops return back to me? The last thing I want to know is, isn't there ANY certified lenovo repair centres in Melbourne? Couriering my laptop all the way to NSW just to repair a hinge sounds like more trouble than it's worth. Though, I think it's funny that another friend of m... Read more

Sorry if this isn't a Windows 7 OS/Program issue, but this is kinda disturbing me,

So I was making my bed about 2 weeks ago, and I take my laptop and put it on my chair. When I was done with that I lightly toss my laptop onto my bed (like 2 inches above my bed), and when it lands I hear a loud CRACK. I pick up my laptop and look at it to see if its broken from somewhere, and I saw nothing wrong, so I continued using it. Later when I actually put it on my lap, the screen falls back, which it never ever does. I try putting it back to the way it was before and it didnt stay like it would. Kept falling back. I check both sides of the laptop and I see that one of the hinges was misplaced/broken, and the cover pieces next to the hinge were separated. I try putting them back together, but whenever I place the monitor back or move it back the cover pieces don't say together.

So uh, I can give pictures tomorrow if needed, but for now can anyone give me some solution to fix this?

Regards,
-Nide

Open and Administrative command prompt, type in "magic-powder-fixaroo" will instantly fix any physical problem with the hardware!

On a more serious note. You'll most likely need a replacement either the full screen assembly of just of the hing itself.

This issue is with any brand of notebook.Human tendency is to use our left hand to tilt the screen which working and the normal place whish we use to tilt is the left bottom corner of screen. The right place to use is the center top edge but we dont. Hence the issue is with all notebook and due to wrong handeling. You will have to take the unit to an authorized service center or call HP to setup a service.

Got the flex 2 14 recently, been using it for a couple days and its pretty great, but I feel like the hinge is a little too tight and that every time I open up the laptop there is a slight crackling noise.. Is this normal and how do i fix this? Thanks

Answer:Flex 2 14 laptop hinge

Hello there,
I bought it a month ago a Lenovo Flex 2 14 ". Computer is very good. Except I just found out I have a broken hinge! Knowing that I take great care of my computer! he never fell, it had no impact. I suspect the way back to the problem screen. hinge was dislocated in a first time and then returned to the user screen it made pressure which broke the corner. so I phoned Lenovo France who told me that the repairs would be at my expense ... This is my first Lenovo and I am very disappointed ...
Sorry for the google translation.

Bonjour,

Hi,
I hope I'm submitting this in the right place... The left hinge on my Dell Laptop seems to be sticking in the closed position. It's forced the case open at that corner.

I pried it further to take a look and saw that the post/hinge itself stays in the closed or near-closed position while the connecting piece rises with the lid of the laptop. This has caused the two screws that connect the hinge with the top to strip the holes, fall out, and now the whole works is just sloppy. It will not close all the way without forcing, which of course then means i have to force it open again. Not much force is needed but you can certainly hear and feel a bit of grinding when you work it.

Any suggestions??

So, my Dell Inspiron has had a broken latch for years, but I'd really like to fix it. However, the way it is broken, I do not know how to do so.

I am attaching pics, but basically it is completely broken off. In the pic where the lcd is seperated from the rest of the laptop, there is just a pice of metal sticking up, and the broken hinge can just fit down over it. It seems like it's not even right on the hinge, it's on the outside of the hinge. I'd think I'd need a whole new lcd holder/surround?

TIA,

Ryan

Question: Loose Laptop Hinge

I notice my left laptop hinge is loose, as the screen has become wobbly and it is starting to become harder to open or close it. I am scared if I do not fix this the continous stress on the hinge will eventually cause the lcd screen to fall off the hinge and that if I do not fix this the other hinge will wear out faster by having to do all the work of the loose hinge.  I have looked everywhere online and could not find a video of how to get to the screws on my laptop.  Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

I have had this laptop for a year now and recently the laptop hinges had begun to fall apart.I have taken great care of this laptop, and other than some screws missing to the cover (due to me losing them while installing an SSD) I dont see what could cause the hinges to become faulty. When opening or closing the laptop the casing comes apart and at times the actual hinge pops out of the case. I have it duct tapes into place, but I was looking to see if this would be covered by warranty? All i need repaired are the hinges, nothing else on the laptop.

My Asus laptop is a few months old and the screen hinge seems to be getting looser and looser. Hiya, I've had this laptop approximately 3-4 years or so and never had any real problems, however about 3/4 of a year ago one of the hinges became quite badly damaged. I normally use my laptop to connect to other monitors so it's never been a significant issue as of yet and I didn't want to fork out for a repair cost (unfortunately, it's no longer under warranty). However my usage is changing and I do need to be more mobile with it. I did a fair bit of Googling and I've noticed a number of people had a similar problem to me, however I didn't manage to find a fix for the problem. Because of the damage I literally cannot move the laptop up or down without fear of it snapping, and even then the hinge is completely out ofn place. I can push it back in - which I do - however it almost instantly pops back out again. Does anyone know what the best idea would be to go about fixing this? Is it a do-it-yourself problem, or would it be best to get it repaired?  Any advice is appreciated. I can also post a picture of the hinge if it's helpful. Cheers,Adam

My HP ENVY Sleekbook 6-1010us has a broken hinge on the left side, the hinge used for opening the screen. Now, whenever I open the laptop, the screen becomes detached from the bottom and is held together by some wires and god knows what else. I then have to "re-assemble it", essentially. This worries me because it seems that it may break at any given moment. The damage is very surprising given that this occurred only through simple wear and tear from general use. I currently have a one year factory warranty on my sleekbook, and am wondering what I can do to get it repaired. Thanks.

Answer:Laptop "hinge" is broken and needs replacement

Hi, The chances of it being repaired under warranty by HP are slim, considering the type of damage. It certainly wouldn't hurt to ask. You can also  have it repaired by a HP authorized notebook shop. If you feel confident enough and willing to accept the risk of damaging your sleekbook, then you can repair it yourself. -erico

Hello,My HP Envy laptop is experiancing a problem with the left hinge/fan. The hinge is very loose and now I can't even open it properly. This laptop was NEVER dropped or mishandled as it sat on my desk at home almost all the time. Their is a gap in the casing now and it is interfering with the fan. This laptop is barely a year old and has software from my college installed on it. I can't afford expensive repairs. This laptop worked perfectly fine before this hinge started coming apart. This appears to be from a defective design, I'm surprised their hasn't been a recall. It seems other people on the forums have experienced a similar problem and was wondering if an HP Rep. could reach out to me.

Hi! I have an HP Protect Smart (Touch Smart) Envy laptop and the right hinge is broken. This occurred without dropping or damaging the laptop in any way. The warranty is already expired and I am inquiring about having it repaired at no cost as this seems to be a common problem with HP Envy laptops.  The model # is E0K83UA#ABA. I would appreciate any assistance you can provide. Hope to hear from you soon!Patricia

My Envy laptop is not under waranty any more and has alway worked fine until this fall when I opened it and the hinge on the left side of the screen popped and broke.  I have not figured out what I will do to fix it yet but just wanted to put it out there that you can add my name to the growing list of hinges that have broken,  Seems odd that there are so many of us.

Hello!
I own an Inspiron 15R i5 laptop, purchased through my school in Aug. 2011.
When I lift the lid to open the computer, there is a creaking noise.  It sounds like it might be on the verge of breaking.
I have taken great care of my computer, never dropped it or damaged it in anyway, always use a padded case when transporting it to school and back and do not move the screen back and forth very much.
Does someone know if this can be fixed or if the warranty covers a new computer?

Answer:Inspiron 15R i5 Laptop hinge is creaking

Hi
This could be the issue with the hinges of the system, please provide me the Service tag or the Express Service code of the system in a private message so that I can check the warranty status of the system and help you further.
Please reply if you have any further questions.

The left hinge of my 17 inch touchscreen laptop broke. This happened years ago with another HP laptop that I had, also. I did not have that one fixed, and ended up replacing it with this new laptop a coupe years ago, and it broke again! Please let me know if this is covered and/or what I can do to have this fixed. I see there are quite a few similar searches from other people who encountered this issue. It is disappointing because I take great care of my laptop and it is in overall great condition other than the broken hinge.

Q: The onsite technician said that the hinges are a manufacturing defect?A: An onsite technician cannot make a Dell policy decision nor define a "manufacturing defect". All he can do is replace the parts we tell him to replace.
Q: I bought the Accidental Damage/Complete Care warranty. Dell should fix these hinges!A: Hinges are not covered in the Accidental Damage/Complete Care warrantyCovered =* Liquid spilled on or in unit* Drops, falls, and other collisions* Electrical surge

I bought my Inspiron 15 5000 online from the Dell and I was quite happy with it. I seldom use my laptop until quite recently in the past couple of weeks or so. My concern right now is the hinge of my Dell. Last night when I close it, I heard a clacking sound. Later I found this morning that it starting to make a gap around the hinge plastic component.  I read the Dell's hinge policy.
My question is, where should we go from there? I am around Melbourne, VIC and I don't know where to find help to fix it and how much would it cost.

Answer:DELL Laptop Hinge Polciy

Hi enjoneer,
Please click my DELL-username and send me a Private Message with the Dell Service Tag number, picture of the hinges and your email address, so that we can check on this for you.

Hello. I have a Hp Envy m6-1105dx laptop that I've had for around 3 years now. I've always taken care of it and never drop it but a few months ago I noticed a crack on the bottom of the left hinge that has slowly gotten worse. Now the screen is barely holding on the left hinge and my screen is starting to glitch out. My warrenty is well over but I've looked it up and saw that many other people have had this same issue. Classes are going to start next week so I'm not sure what I can do, as getting it repaired is too expensive for me right now. Like I said it just started falling apart out of nowhere and the plastic has cracked and fallen apart. What should I do?

Hinge failure, left side at on/off switch and system fan.  Internal plastic components that receive the hinge screws have failed.  Apparently, the plastic cannot repeatedly sustain the forces created by the tight hinge and its screws.  Plastic chips loose in the $700 product.  Product is just shy of three years old.  Not under warranty. It is clear from this forum and other sources that HP is aware of hinge failures at least as far back as 2009.  Why would you continue to sell the suspect design?  What equitable resolution is available? Temp solution has a screwdriver inserted thru the lock port into hinge end to resist hinge movement when closing the screen.  Otherwise, it is quite an ugly scene as you are well aware. In addition, I have recently twice experienced HP printhead issues that were resolved equitably, but the HP grind is getting quite old. Thank you for your time and expert assistance.

I just received the Latitude 5480 a mere two days ago and the bottom of the lid "scrapes" on the body in the center when opening and closing. Obviously the hinges are misaligned and I am going to get such a hassle trying to get this fixed.

Answer:Hinge Issue on Brand New Laptop

There's no point in repairing a system that's defective out of the box.  Contact Dell and have the system replaced as defective on arrival.

I have cut and pasted this so I don't get it wrong !!
Surely the first statement of 'it would be covered under the additional ACCIDENTAL DAMAGE/COMPLETE CARE POLICY is contradicted by question 3 in which HINGES are listed as NOT COVERED !!!!!!!!
Because a hinge is under the "Normal wear and tear" policy, it is not covered by the default limited hardware warranty. It would be covered under the additional "Accidental Damage/Complete Care" warranty. If you did not purchase the additional "Accidental Damage/Complete Care" warranty, you will need to pay for the repair using our "Support Service for Expired Warranties" offering.

The left hinge on my HP Envy 15 just broke.  I purchased this laptop on 11/27/2013.  It seems strange it would just break from opening and closing the laptop.  Would this be covered by HP?thanks
