Windows 7 Sound Stopped Working, All Diagnostics Fine

Question: Windows 7 Sound Stopped Working, All Diagnostics Fine

After installing a new Ethernet card, all audio output from my Dell desktop stopped working (front and back). I am using the factory installed Realtek High Definition Audio which is at Location 0 (Internal High Definition Audio Bus). Every diagnostic on the desktop, however, is showing no issues. This includes the volume mixer, the Realtek Audio Manager, Device Manger, the Control Panel's Sound tab and everything else I could find recommended in various online forums. These all show normally functioning audio. This means that when I play something on youtube, or invoke system sounds via Matlab, the mixer shows everything is good, but there is no actual audio output. I have a NVIDIA video card running two monitors, but they are DVI and their sound output is disabled.

Solutions tried:
-Restarting the computer
-Uninstalling driver and reinstalling driver
-Uninstalling driver and reinstalling latest Reaktek driver
-Sound troubleshooter (no issues)
-Fiddling with the Realtek Audio manager advanced settings, connector settings and speaker configuration
-Taking out the new Ethernet card
-Disabling and then re-enabling the reaktek driver
-Disabling and then re-enabling the NVIDIA sound driver
-Plugging into the front jacks
-Plugging into the back jacks
-Plugging into the monitors
-Connecting speakers to the above locations
-Connecting headphones to the above locations

We use this as an experimental machine in a research lab, and really need the audio for subject feedback.

Preferred Solution: Windows 7 Sound Stopped Working, All Diagnostics Fine

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

When I try to go to run and type dxdiag.exe Is tells me this. Also I have been trying to get a game to work. On my PC it will not work. I have been talking to EA sports about it for 4 days now. This is the only other thing they have told me to try was update direct x Now I did and it is doing this now. Here are both the directx message and the game error message.

This is the directx error

Here is what the game says when I try to play it after downloading. It says it completes the download. But then when I look at it.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the game 4 times. Now I tried to update directx and the first error message is what I am getting now.

Answer:directx Diagnostics tool stopped working?

Hmm... someone offered this solution:

Quote:
Run the game in windowed mode. In the shortcut add (space)-win at the end of the file location. And that should work. Annoying bug, but its been around since the beta and so has that fix.

Solved !!!!! -- "Please make sure you have DirectX 9.0 or higher installed.

I'm sure most of you will tell me it is not a necessary tool, but I'd at least like to know why I see this

Thank you.

Answer:Hardware Diagnostics tool has stopped working

So I'm guessing nobody knows why it happens or nobody cares? It did work fine before, but not now.

I am running Windows 8.1. The SDNH error keeps popping up and is really annoying. It doesn't seemed to be tied to anything and crashes randomly.

sfc /scannow came back with no problems. cmd was in administrator mode.

My apologies if this questions has been previously answered, but I have been unable to find a solution.
OS: Windows 10
Processor: Intel core i3 (4030U) CPU @ 1.90GHz 64 bit OS, x64 - based processor

I receive the error when at idle for a few minuets, and when troubleshooter of any type is run.
It also prevented me from changing from Ethernet to wireless.

I preformed a SFC which found no issues.

Please provide a suggested fix with step by step details.

Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thank you!!!

Hi I've been receiving this error message saying "Scripted Diagnostics Native Host has stopped working" for the past few weeks, and I have no idea what started this.
I've tried downloading this antivirus program called Avira to test whether or not my laptop has been infected but that doesn't seem to be the issue here?
Sorry I'm not too sure what information I need to post here in order to help you guys resolve this issue, but it'll be great if any of you could tell me what you need to know about my laptop or this problem in general in order to stop this message from occurring!

I keep getting this pop up message saying Sdnh has stopped working and windows will shut it down and notify me if there is a solution. They never notify me. Is this something that I should try to fix and if so, how.  I am completely in the dark as to what this is.  I would appreciate if someone could help me or answer my question on this. Thank you in advance.  bubblez2000

Answer:Scripted diagnostics native host has stopped working

Your description of the problem is lacking in detail so it is difficult to home in on a specific issue and/or solution. However, you may want to try the following:

Open an elevated command prompt and type the following message (without quotes): "sfc /scannow"  (note the space between the C and the / is required).

This will take some time to complete; however, if system corruption or errors are reported, try running this command to fix them:

(using an elevated command prompt again without quotes):   "Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth"  (note all spaces are required).

This error started popping up this morning. I have not installed or uninstalled any programs within the last several days, but I did do an Error Checking and Defrag via the Disk Management tool.I ran /sfc scannow and it returned some errors and stored them in the CBS log file. That file can be found here: https://merkd.com/ufo/cbs.logI scanned through it myself but didn't really know what I'm looking for. Is anything in this log file indicative of a problem that would cause this error? It happens automatically after starting my computer up even before I start any programs. The only bootable program I have is my Avast anti-virus. I did a total scan but it came up empty. I've also tried a clean-up and registry fix through CCleaner but again, no problems were detected and nothing was fixed.Any help is greatly appreciated, this error is very annoying.

Answer:hp pavilion 1503 stopped working...and was working fine

Its either failed to find your hard drive or failed to find the boot files on the drive.
Asuume this is a laptop?
What operating system are you using XP Vista or W7?
While in the BIOS (setup) has the machine found and recognised the hard drive?
Is the boot order set as CD rom first and HDD second?
Can you remove and refit the drive to remake the connections as that may well solve a missing drive problem?

OK so here's the down-low i have a certified data headset and mic it was working really well one day me and my friend were talking in skype no problems but the very next day we try and talk to each other my mic was giving off no sound and he couldn't hear me i have gone it to advanced properties and everything it might be because of my IDT audio 1 but it hadn't given me problems before is there something i might have missed or done?

Answer:My mic was working fine then stopped the next day

The quickest test for this is to first try another mic. If you are quite certain that no settings have been changed then your mic has probably developed a fault.

Firefox 3.02 stopped working. I upgraded to 3.03, then tried a clean reinstall, then tried going back to Firefox 2. Tried running Firefox in Safe Mode. Also disabled Norton, and Windows Firewall. Also tried uninstalling Windows SP3. Nothing worked! IE and Outlook Express work fine. Before this happened I uninstalled the free Norton Corporate Edition which came with my new computer and installed my university's Symantec Antivirus 10.1.5.5000. I read somewhere that Norton uninstall can cause this problem, but don't know what to do.

Sound suddenly stopped working.  Device manager says everthing working OK.  Updated drivers - no change.  Using Logitech speakers for past 2 years with no problems.  Ran total system diagnostics - no problems.  System has audio jacks on from panel and rear panel -  reporting DEVICE NOT PLUGGED IN. Checked Logitech speakers and pair of Apple ear buds in my other HP desktop and Toshiba laptop and both work with no problem on each system.  Possible bus problem??  If so will buying a simple sound board solve the problem? Thanks for any help at all!!

Answer:sound stopped working - windows 10

Hi: A similar thing happened to me on my PC running W10 (upgraded from W7>W10). Sound was working fine but then I got the same message you did. What happened to me for some unknown reason, was that the default output got changed from the speakers to the headphone jack. So, I set the speakers as the default again, and hadn't had any problem since. So you may want to check the control panel>hardware and sound>manage audio devices and make sure the speakers are set as the default. That would be the only suggestion I can offer (besides buying a W10 compatible audio card as you mentioned).

Hi, recently I bought Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit) and decided to upgrade my HP Pavillion a1430n XP computer. Upon doing this, my sound stopped working and I got a red x over the audio symbol in the corner. So of course, I looked on the internet, and found that my Realtek ACL883 needed a new driver. Upon downloading it, I had sound again, and so I was happy for a few days, until a RAM chip broke, and I had to replace it. After taking out the old RAM chip and inserting a new one then hooking up my machine and starting it, the red x was back again.

No problem, I'll just re-download the drivers. Unfortunately this did not work, and so after 4 hours of trying everything I decided to revert back to XP to see if I could figure it out. After restoring to factory settings, my sound is still not working, it appears as if the soundcard isn't even being detected. After trying the drivers again, and downloading an updated BiOS from HP, still no luck.

I am now back in Windows 7, with no sound, and I was wondering what anyone of you would recommend. Obviously, I have no idea what I'm even doing anymore, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

System Specifications:

OS: Windows 7 Home Premium(64 bit)
Video Card: ATI Radeon HD3870
Processor: Athlon 64 X2 (T) 3800+ 2.0 GHz
Motherboard: Asus A8N-LA
Soundcard: Realtek ACL883

Thank you!

Tonight there was a lightning storm, I can't imagine how that could have had this effect, but I can't ignore the timing either. IE and Firefox just flat out quit loading anything

The address is not valid

Most likely causes:
There might be a typing error in the address.
If you clicked on a link, it may be out of date.

What you can try:
Retype the address.

Go back to the previous page.

But AOL explorer alone works beautifully......Though runs of speed tests are showing a shakey download/upload stream, although I'm still getting 8 megs/1 meg, and again IE and Firefox just flat won't work.

HELP please? Anyone?

Answer:IE just flat stopped working, but AOL explorer works fine

I have a toshiba a30 and all off a sudden my sound disappeared, drivers are intact and it says my sound card is working fine, the start up tune can be hear very faintly if the room is in total silence and you hold up your ear to it.

I recently restored my computer hoping this would fix the problem but unfortunately not....
can someone help me please?!

Answer:Satellite A30: sound disappeared - drivers & sound card is working fine

Hm, maybe you should try to turn the volume louder. Try this with the volumecontrol of Windows in the systemtray, with the control in the Mediaplayer or with the volumecontrol on your machine.
Try to connect a Hifi or at least headphones to your headphones connector, just to prove if your soundcard or your speakers are not faulty.
If the sound of your speaker is not the same like with your headphones than you have probably a hardware-failure which has to fixed by a technician or a servicepartner of Toshiba.

4) Restarting the computer
Edit: 5) Tried to switch playback options, There are only 2: 24 Bit: 48000 Hz, 16 Bit 48000 Hz (DVD quality)

Solution I want:

Hello

I have heard of this happening. One other thing to try:

Right click on the Volume tray icon and select Playback Devices
Select Speakers and Properties
Select the Advanced tab and try changing the bit depth and test. Mine's on Studio quality but CD quality is usually quite adequate.

For some reason changing this to something else and back again has been known to sort the problem out.

A friend of mine has a PC which is pre-installed with Windows7. The sound problem arised a few weeks back. He called me and told me that his computer has stopped emitting any sound. I went to his place to have a look at it and I was puzzled by wat I saw. According to Windows7, everything is as it should be and sound is supposed come out, but no sound it coming out the speakers. I've checked everything from the advanced volume control to device manager and everything is fine. He has Realtech HD installed and there's nothing wrong with it since its configurations application show that everything is fine. There are no error messages at all. The default audio device is set on "Speakers", which to my knowledge is it what its supposed to be. Changing it to High Definition didnt help either. Every media plays without any problems except that there's no sound. I've tried Driver Roll-back, updating drivers, System Restore to no avail. Sound Troubleshooter says everything is fine. I can here a bit of static when I plug and unplug the speakers and headphones from all audio jacks, also the computer can see wen I plug and unplug speakers meanin the audio jacks are workin properly. Am I missing something here? Is there anything that I havent done/tried? I'm not really a tech-savvy, but I sure know my way around a computer, both software and hardware. I wish I could give the system specs of the computer, but I'm not anywhere close to his place to check his computer. I'd appreciate any help ... Read more

So this happened before. I bring my computer over to a friends house for a couple days, then when bringing it back to my house and hooking it back up the mic does not want to work with skype or any program that records.

Had this happen last week then it just fixed itself. As of right now everything is plugged in the right spot, all the checks and green bars move when i talk into it in the windows settings. Even when I go to monitor mic option i can hear fine, it is working.

Just for some reason it is not working with any chat program. It is not working in skype, steam, and windows recording. WTF is going on here

Answer:Mic stopped working with programs, works fine with monitor check?!

Check that the device the mic is currently plugged into is set as the default device:

The level indicator and monitoring functions will still work for non default devices, but only the default device will be used with applications (unless the applications themselves have the option to override this).

Hello,

I've just encountered a strange problem:

The sound recording functionality of windows stopped working, this may sound like a strange description but I don't know how to express it any better.

First and probably most important bit of information: If I unmute the microphone in the sound Playback settings I can hear myself perfectly fine.

BUT: It doesnt seem to matter which recording device I select within the Recording settings of the volume panel, nothing works, not even "what u hear" (although im having music playing right now).

Specs:
- windows xp prof 64bit edition
- creative audigy 2 ZS soundcard

I can guarantee I havent changed anything within windows from yesterday (when everything worked fine!) to today. The only thing that has changed, is that I have installed another 4GB of memory to my pre-existant 4GB. I doubt that this is the origin of the problem though, I can't possibly spot any connection.

Here is what I did today already AFTER realizing that there was a problem:

- reinstalled sound drivers (now using SBAX_PCDRV_LB_2_18_0011.exe )
- ran DirectX webupdate

Ok hm.. whatelse is there to say... oh, I used the following programs for testing: teamspeak2, ventrilo and windows' sndrec32.

I also went to control panel - sound and audio devices - voice - test hardware, which presents you an equalizer of the recording source. Even if I switched the recording source to "what u hear" (while playing music in windows that ... Read more

So, I bought and set up my new computer a week ago a HP Pavilion p6204y. I used my already owned 2.1 speaker system that I used on my old computer. Everything was working great.

Last night, I noticed something odd with my speakers; each time I opened a new window a different high pitched sound would emanate from it. I had no clue what was causing it so I shut down the computer, unplugged all the wires possible, replaced them just as they were, and restarted the computer. Problem solved, no more high pitched noises.

Then I realized that NO noises were coming from them at all, all I could hear was a slight static noise when the speakers were turned to full volume.

I decided to investigate and found that my speakers were not even being recognized as being in my computer.

After searching (and reading through) several forums, I came across HP's support site for audio problems and did every single suggestion on the page. Each resulted in no improvement whatsoever, though now the playback devices has an added option (which is still of no use)

I am positive it is not the speakers themselves as plugging them straight into my zune or xbox results in perfect performance, and would really like to find a solution soon for this eight day old computer.

Answer:New computer windows 7, sound stopped working in a week

You mention you did everything that needed to be done, can you be more specific? The drivers come to mind right off the bat! If you are using older speakers this may be a problem with your new Windows 7 computer. It has nothing to do with the speakers, you will want to check for your sound card driver: Update a driver for hardware that isn't working properly.

Hello, basically i have been able to play the sims 2 on this same computer since the week it came out, as i brought it then, yesterday however, i was cleaning up the computer by uninstalling certian things that were making the computer slow.
I do not think i uninstalled anything relevant to the graphics card but im guessing i could have unknowingly done so. Im getting the same error that alot of people have but still havent been able to fix it.
The error says that it failed to find any directX 9.0c compatible graphics adapters in the system.
Helllllllllp pleaseee?

Also im using windows XP and my graphics card is fine as the Sims has been playing on it before alongside with various other games.
I have tried changing the hardware acceleration section but that was full anyway so i couldnt change it.

Did your ISP give you this router such as your leasing it etc? If so contact them for a replacement. If you own this router then I'd try factory reset button to set it back to factory default. If that doesn't cure this then buy a new router. They are pretty cheap these days.Your router could have been hacked, the access denied is strange!

Under Windows 7 64-bit (with latest updates), I'm trying to set advanced properties on the built-in SPDIF HD audio device (using the latest audio driver posted for my Socket 775 P5K-E/WIFI-AP motherboard, but it crashes every time.

I can set volume and select

'Speakers
SoundMAX Integraeted Digital HD Audio
Default Device'

...and I can use the 'Configure' button, but if I select it's Properties on this Sound page, it crashes with this message:

'Windows shell Common Dll has stopped working.
A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.
Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.'

Clicking on SoundMAX in Control Panel does nothing. No advanced options are displayed.

I need to be able to access the control panel installed along with the drivers for the card. The SPDIF goes straight to an AV AMP, which isn't reproducing Pro Logic Surround Sound in my 5.1 configuration at the moment, I think I just need to configure them through the special SoundMAX control panel which appears in the Windows Control Panel, but cannot be opened (clicking does nothing).

Answer:'Windows shell Common Dll has stopped working' - Sound Problem

Have you tried to install the driver in compatibility mode?

Asus suck a bit where P5 and W7 are concerned.
I know.. I am on one.

You may need to uninstall them and start over in order to get them to work correctly.

I just upgraded my Windows XP Toshiba Satellite laptop to Windows 7 and now the sound card, and the wifi feature (where it looks for signals) does not work! Is there a way to fix this, or maybe even revert back to XP. I didn't make a back-up disc.. but if there is a way to do so, I'd like to. Thanks!

Answer:Sound card and wifi stopped working once I upgraded to Windows 7?

Update the drivers to run them. Go to computer>system properties>device manager and look for updates for the audio and network adapter drivers

When I access the context menu on Sound properties, it crashes, saying "Windows Shell Common DLL Stopped Working". I have Realtek HD audio and Intel Display Audio (HDMI out) audio devices. I can't access any function from the context menu, such as setting the highlighted audio device as default or testing the device. I tried both R2.79 drivers from Realtek website, as well as the drivers posted here in the Latest Realtek HD Audio Driver Version - Windows 10 Forums thread, but the issue persists. This happens with all tabs on Sound properties, such as Playback and Recording.

However, if I click the "Set default" button on the bottom it works, but on the other hard, cliking the arrow to open the drop-down list menu triggers the crash again.

I uninstalled the Intel Display Audio driver from Device Manager, leaving only the Realtek HD Audio device, and it stopped the crashing, as I'm able to access the context menu without crashing. Is this issue caused by Intel Display Audio or is a bug caused by Windows 10? Thanks in advance.

Answer:Windows Shell Common DLL Stopped Working on Sound Properties

I would think, based on your description, it is caused by the Intel Audio Driver. With the Intel Audio driver installed, you have 2 different drivers for the same audio device, which can cause driver conflicts. That is the way I see it.

My computer is working is working fine but there is no sound.

Answer:My XP is working fine and I need sound.

OK, so what do you want anyone here to do? You have given us absolutely nothing to go on. You may need to install (or reinstall) the sound drivers. Or you may have the volume turned down or muted. Or the speakers may be turned off. Or they may be plugged into the wrong port.

hello,
my computer has been saying that it has been low on ram for a while, but i would ignore it as i have just finished download call of duty modern warfare 2 (a large game) and have been wanting to play it. Suddenly, my sound ceased to work and windows media player wont play files, instead putting a red x next to them as if they cant find them. When my headphones are plugged in the jack it wont work, but when i take the sound jack out my computers speakers (which are coming from the monitor) make very strange noises. I have a windows vista 32 bit and i would appreciate some help. Thank you.

Answer:[SOLVED] Sound suddenly stopped working and windows media player wont recognise files

Windows requires considerable memory to run media player.
If it is out of memory it wont even start.

Try to disable some things and see if it will work.

I am becoming frustrated with this problem as my PC is no more than 2 months old.......(dell). i do not switch my PC off and each morning i get up and attempt to play media....say on bbc news......(picture and audio) it does not work. the media plays for a few seconds and then freezes and i never hear any sound. I have discovered that restarting the PC fixes this every time. It then works for the rest of the day.......

I am completely confused. Have looked at my drivers and it says they are all working fine plus i can see no problems with the sound under control panel....mind you i have basic knowledge. I have no different software on this new pc than i had on an older model and i never had such problems. i would appreciate some guidance as i have run out of ideas.......many many thanks

Answer:sound and media stops working and is fine after restart

I think you should carefully check you sound card drivers for the latest updates. As I understood you have a built-in sound card. That type of problem is rather common and the reason is in the poor software. Good luck in your search!

Hi I am new here and was wondering if anyone could help me. The sound on my windows 10 laptop is not working properly on apps. It is fine on videos eg Youtube or Netflix but when my children try to use their educational games the sound misses most of each word so you cannot work out what the instructions are. I have tried a different browser, I usually use Chrome but installed Firefox and this made no difference. I have also checked that i have the latest flash player update. Does anybody have any ideas as to what to try next?

Dell just saying it's a "possibility" the motherboard might need to be replace. No one can tell you that motherboard is definite "Fried" without first looking at the system.
What is the system model number and version of windows before upgrading to windows 10? Example: Dell Inspiron 3543, windows 10
You're able to boot into BIOS(F2 key) and diagnostic (F12 key) ?

I recently got a new laptop and I've been having a lot of trouble with the sound. It is the laptop seen here:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1218090329155

Sometime the audio works, but then if I pause a song and attempt to resume it a few minutes later, errors occur and the audio seems to be disabled.

"Windows Audio has stopped working" flashes quickly, followed by:

"Host Process for Windows Services stopped working and was closed
A problem caused the application to stop working correctly. Windows will notify you if a solution is available."

Then, if I right click on the small volume icon in the bottom right by the time, go to "Playback Devices" I get the following message:

"This computer cannot play audio because the Windows Audio Service is not enabled.

Would you like to enable the Windows Audio Service?"

I click yes and the audio works again, but even after this it still acts funny.

Things of note:Sometimes the Volume Up/Down/Off buttons on my keyboard work, and sometimes they do not.
After this problem occurs and I restart it by going to Playback Devices, the audio cannot be turned up/down in Windows Media Player. I must manually adjust my (external) speakers.
I'm using Windows Media Player because Songbird and iTunes seem to freeze up every time I try to play music through them

Hey, I need a bit of help

I'm running a Dell inspiron laptop, if this helps, but I recently had what I believe was a virus on here, my internet security (McAfee and Windows Defender) were both being turned off from time to time and I had to manually turn them back on.
Then my laptop started slowing down so much it took 3 hours to complete 12% of a scan with only that running. I decided to do a system restore to about 2 weeks ago, hoping to fix the problem.

After 4 hours of it saying the same thing whilst trying to complete the restore (Windows is repairing the registry), I decided it was time for some intervention as it seemed to be stuck in some never ending loop.
I got the recovery CD and then turned my laptop off mid-restore, which it didn't like. Upon turning it back on I only got a blue screen and mouse, but I got it to boot from the CD and did a boot recovery and Disk Check. All is working fine, apart from I am left now with no sound.
(On a side note, the boot start isn't the same as before and it says that the Autochk is missing, Skipping Autocheck)

I've checked the device manager, which is telling me everything is working fine, apart from in sounds it cannot play a test sound.
I've run a Dell Support Center check, which told me everything was running fine apart from a PCI Family Bus Port 5 - 2495, which failed to run the test, but windows again was saying that this is working fine.
Apart from the fact that my laptop now has no sound, the only other thing pointing... Read more

Next run a secure file check (this can be done while still in safe mode as well)

I have a Vista Home Premium 32 bit OS.

Recently I found my old webcam to my old computer, but I didn't have the old disk for it. So, in order to make it work, I downloaded a driver for the webcam online. After it installed, I went to use it on MSN messenger and it worked fine. But then, I remember it asking me something about a microphone option, which I don't have. Ever since then, the sound on my computer does not work AT ALL (this lead me to believe my computer might still think there is a microphone plugged in but it can't find it). I went into my Audio adjust options and tested the speakers and the Realtek sound driver. The speakers test worked, but the Realtek didn't (the bars move and everything when I play music, but nothing comes out of the speakers). Even whenever I restart my computer, the log in sound is not there. I have done everything I can think of and it still won't work. I even deleted the webcam driver I downloaded and have messed with the audio options. Nothing.

Please help. I've asked other tech forums and have gotten no replies.

Answer:Sound Stopped Working.

Have you checked that there are no conflicts with devices in the device manager? Did you try and un-install the device and then re-boot and let Windows find it? Did you roll back or update drivers for the device? Did you go to the manufacturer's website and download the correct driver for your device? Have you tried to do a system restore to a point before this happened to see if it would fix the problem?

Hello tech guy forums, I've just recently had a problem with my ASUS G50v laptop computer where the fan has been making some nasty grinding noises, and was looking like it might stop working. So I opened up the bottom of the computer and poked at the fan with a vacuum, trying to see if there was some dust I could remove. I made sure to not mess with any of the other parts of the computer, and it did not seem like there was much dust on the fan, so I just closed the computer up again. Looks like I need to replace the fan.

However, when I turned the comp back on, the time on the computer was way off, saying it was 2009 and 4 in the morning instead of 5 in the afternoon and 2010. Also, far more problematic, I now have no sound, despite the system telling me that my sound is working. I tried downloading the latest driver off ASUS' website, and installing it, but it did not fix my new problem of no sound. If anybody knows what might be going on here, I'd be very happy to hear from you.
Thanks

Edit: I should probably also mention that, when I click on the volume adjuster button at the bottom right of the start bar, if I have a song or something going it definitely recognizes that there SHOULD be sound because the little green bar is bouncing up and down. There just isn't any actually coming out. I have tried using the built in audio from my laptop as well as my brand new headset, neither of which get anything.

Answer:Sound stopped working

Hi

Welcome to Seven Forums and Happy New Year
Have you tried reinstalling the drivers for your sound-card? It will help if you could rpovide more details about your hardware including the model, chipset etc?

If i remember correctly, devices marked with an "x" are those that have been disabled - have you tried enabling the device again and letting windows install the driver automatically?

Have a look at this SF tutorial - How to Install a Driver in Device Manager

My system is WIN ME, Audio: Creative Labs Sound Blaster 64 PCI. I use sound infrequently but it has always worked. Now it does not, the speakers are good, they work on my linked computer and alwayd worked on the one that is now not working. I have tried many approaches, downloaded and installed new drivers, but receive a message, no audio devices, supplied, no speakers installed, Audie.exe code 137, code 28 etc. The DELL SUPPORT and SOLUTIONS are of no help, I have tried all of their troubleshooting methods without help.
Coincidentally, SYSTEM RESTORE no longer functions, so that option is no longer aavailable to me.
Is there any hope to solve this problem?

Answer:Sound stopped working

I have posted this problem in 5 forums, and not got one reply, i don't understand why, either way i found a fix, and thought i had better post it here for any one else who has the same problem. The fix is for missing drive icons in my computer, but it is the same error code as the one i was getting, and it has worked, i now have sound working as normal.

I have now got the problem that my computer hangs on shut down, and i don't know if this fix caused that problem, because i had tried other fix's as well before i re booted.

I hope this does helps others, and then i will feel as though i have repaid some of the kindness i have received here on this forum, in the past.

There were other fix's for other problems on this web page, but the name of that forum is on the page, and i don't know if its bad manners to post that web page, and i don't want to be disloyal to a brilliant forum that has helped me in the past, if its allowed and some one lets me know here, i will post that web page here later.

The fix is as below.

To solve this Code 39 error, follow these instructions:

NOTE: After removing these registry keys and rebooting, it may be necessary to reinstall any CD or DVD recording applications.

I recently moved my pc to another room and my sound is no longer working. I'm pretty sure all cords are plugged into the same spots they always have been, so I can't figure out what is causing the issue. Whenever I troubleshoot my sound issues I get a list of all these issues, and it can't find any way to resolve the problems: https://snag.gy/oNrLce.jpg . My system tray also claims I have no speakers or headphones plugged in: https://snag.gy/aXbCcG.jpg . But when I go to playback devices it shows all the ones I do have plugged in, but options like set default are grayed out: https://snag.gy/xbnOKz.jpg . I have reinstalled my sound drivers and have tried a bunch of other random stuff I found on the internet, but I'm honestly out of ideas. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Since I don't know the root of the problem, I'll provide all that I can.

Around two or three days ago, my keyboard got messed up and stopped working. When I was messing around with the back of the tower to try to fix it, I somehow killed my sound off too. Eventually, I got a new keyboard, but after adjusting with the stuff on the back of the computer tower the sound still didn't work.

Since my sister's computer specs and mine are the same, I checked out the device manager on both of the PCs to see what was missing from mine. I found out that it was a "Realtek AC'97 Audio" listing. So of course, I google it up and download what I find. However, after installing it, it still doesn't work. It doesn't even show in the device manager! And to make matters more confusing, when I start up my computer, it says that I can press Shift+F10 to configure it. When I do that, a DOS-like menu pops up where I can change a few options but nothing I change will get the sound working.

When I go to Accessories --> Entertainment --> Volume Control, it says that there are no active mixer devices available.

I don't think it's related to viruses or spyware. I've scanned multiple times with TuneUp, Spybot, Ad-aware, Norton, and a few other programs. Nothing came up.

First time poster, so I will do what I can to follow the guidelines. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Problem: Two days ago I noticed that my sound began to sound really bad and was getting softer. At first I thought it was my speakers, so I put in a set of headphones. Same problem. I then put in a diffrent set, still bad. I then took out all sound equipment and tryed my on board (I have a laptop) speakers give it a go, thinking it could be just the outbound speaker connection. All this to no avail. It sounded as though my sound was coming from underwater it was muffled and staticy.

The following day the sound stopped working all together.

What I have tryed: The computer is not muted. I have checked all options on my comp for sound, from advanced ones, to the basic ones. I have tryed troubleshooting but that has come up with no avail (it was saying something abotu bios but I didn't want to tamper with them).

I have the feeling that my sound card has stopped working, but I wanted to come to you guys before i took any drastic measures.

I am running a Dell laptop with windows XP professional. Its about 1 1/2 years old. The soundcard is on board. If you need any other specs I would be more then happy to accomidate. Thank you in advance!!!

Answer:Sound Stopped Working

you may wanna check your device manager to see if they can detect and tell you the working status of your sound card.

The worst case scenario would be to change the sound card....to a better ones.

hi mhcanupp,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

Open Device Manager and Look under Sound and Gaming Controllers
Uninstall the Device under it. (Make sure to place a check under Delete Driver Software for this Device)

Now Open Support.lenovo.com downloads and categorize your system.
Download the Audio driver there based on your operating system and the name of your Sound device (Conexant , realtek)

Restart the system and check.

Today I turned on my computer and the sound just didn't work. I tried restarting and it didn't help. It's not on mute and the sound is turned up to the loudest. I checked all sound settings and it said that it's working properly. But there's absolutely no sound!

Answer:my sound stopped working

assuming you have not recently changed nor added any new hardware associated with sound.have a look at hardware/device manager and report any yellow exclamation or question marks. I assume we are dealing with external powered speakers here. Try another set of speakers plugged into the appropriate sound output jack. truenorth

Hi there,

There is something strange going on on my Laptop (acer aspire 5741g). Just now when I turned my computer on the sound stopped working. I tried to reinstall all my drivers, but to no extent. Also when I start my computer, and error is given that ePowerTray had stopped working. Also the computer tells me that I'm not connected to the internet, but I am. My laptop also gives me 2 messages that I should turn on windows defender and download an anti-virus program (which I have).

I'm not sure if this is a virus problem or software, though, I highly doubt it's a software problem.

Thanks in advance,

Ramy

Hi,

I turned on my computer this morning, an hour or so after my brother was using it, only to notice the speakers green cable thing was plugged in the front of my computer, in the headphones slot. I thought 'that's strange'. Once logged on, I noticed my brother had left me a message on the PC saying the sound isn't working when plugged in the back, so he plugged it in the front instead.

Anyway, the sound isn't working in either slot. I've tried the speakers with my laptop and their working fine on that, so that rules out the speakers being the problem.

When I plug the speakers in and out of the back slot, the following application pops up on my desktop, with the message 'what device did you plug in?':

I've provided some screenshots extra below of the sound mixer etc., if there any help.

Hi, not sure if this is the right forum but hopefully I can get some help.
The sound on my PC stopped working about a week ago, had been working fine up until that point. Hadn't installed anything in at least the few weeks before it stopped.

I decided to re format the PC a few days later thinking that it would be fine, which initially it was, oh by the way, am running XP professional. Windows did all its updates as per normal and the sound stopped again.

Reinstalled the PC yet again to try and get to the bottom of things and this time went through things a bit more slowly. Did it's first lot of updates, was fine after those. That was yesterday that they updated. Tonight installed Service Pack 2 and thats when it has stopped.

In the Sound and Audio Devices section of the Control Panel it is saying there is no audio device installed, yet I had installed it via the CD that came with the motherboard. Soundmax sound on an ASUS k8v SE deluxe motherboard.

Does anyone know why something like this may have happened, any help would be greatly appreciated

My sound was working fine for months. I shut my pc down to go to a lan party... got there... no sound... Booted to XP instead.... Sound works..

When I got home... no sound in Vista....

Driver says installed.
Its not muted.
No errors in event viewer.

I have the following symptoms (besides no sound):

"Test" on Default Format results in: Failed To Play Test Tone
Media Player results in : C00D11D2 (generic cant access file)?
"Test" on speaker conf. results in: Failed To Play Test Tone

I had the Realtek Hi Def 1.75 drivers..
tried reinstalling them...not fixed.
tried installing 1.74...not fixed.

tried new chipset drivers...not fixed
tried new video drivers...not fixed

Seems common on the web... yet not resolved yet?

KB930883 seems slightly relevant, except I do not have duplicate entried on the default format option.

My PC is as follows:

Intel E6600
4GB DDR2 800
1.14TB HDD Space
Vista Home Premium x64
Foxconn 8800GTX
Mainboard EVGA i680 SLI

Any ideas?

I am getting quite annoyed with the 64bit version of Vista.
Since I have installed it, I have had this happen and also at one point all 32bit applications were crashing (IE, Outlook, Everything). I had to do a repair install to fix that.

Answer:Sound Stopped Working

Quick Update...

Received KB930883 from Microsoft this morning.

It did NOT fix the missing sound.

I was on Hulu today watching the latest Family Guy episode (on my Toshiba laptop) and the screen when black. Thinking it just went into sleep mode, I moved the mouse and the screen didnt come back but the sound of Family Guy was still going. I had to hold the power button to shut it down and when it rebooted, I had no sound. Ive checked all the sound levels and made sure that its not muted. And I also uninstalled and reinstalled the sound driver (even though it said that the device was working properly.) So what do I do now? Thanks

Could any one please help, i have a computer with a winfast N15235 Motherboard, it has on board sound, and the sound has stopped working, i think it maybe the drivers that have been deleted or corrupted. I cannot find the installation disc for the Motherboard, and i would like to find out what the problem is.

Could any one tell me how i check if it is the drivers that are the problem, and how i can tell which sound driver i need, or any other advice.

So far I have looked in Device manager, and there is an exclamation mark at the side of Microsoft kernel wave audio mixer.

When i check the Microsoft kernel wave audio mixer properties i get the error message below.

"Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)"

I have tried to find a new driver by clicking the update driver button, it searches the Internet, but then i get the message saying that
"the wizard could not find a better match for my hardware than the software i have already"

When i click the driver "details button" i get the message.
"no driver files are required are have been loaded for this device"

Thanks in advance.

A couple days ago, about halfway through listening to a song, the sound simply disappeared. I fiddled with the volume, tried youtube instead of iTunes, restarted my computer, tested my sound and unplugged my speakers before plugging them back in. Nothing changed.
I don't think it's my speakers, because when I turn the knob to turn them on, they make the customary crackle and the blue light appears. I tried plugging headphones into the front of my computer and they hummed, but didn't play sound either.
I checked out this thread: http://forums.techguy.org/windows-xp/757597-no-sound-computer-2.html
but none of my devices have a question mark or exclamation point over them.
Under 'sound, video and game controllers' these things are listed: Audio codecs, legacy audio drivers, legacy video capture devices, media control devices, realtek AC'97 Audio, sound blaster live! 24-bit, and video codecs.
I'm not really sure what any of those are (I got the computer third hand) except I believe that the realtek is the sound card?
I have an XP, version 5.1 and I'd really like to be able to listen to music again, so any help you could provide would be helpful. Thank you!

Do you have external speakers that don't work? Or are you talking about internal speakers?

There are a number of things it could be, but I need to know the hardware configuration before giving you any recommendations.

Hey, today I used auslogics to speed up my computer and it apparently cleaned up my computer, and while it is a lot faster, my sound has stopped working. When I click play on itunes, the song doesn't play, it's not just that there is no sound, the little arrow doesn't start moving on the timer either, so it seems like its not just as simple as a problem with my speakers. No sounds on the internet work either. When i start up my computer, it says there is new hardware found (even though i haven't recently installed any new hardware) called "IDT High Definition Audio CODEC"... I click to install it but it says it can't be installed & there's errors, compatibility errors etc.Anyway I'm useless when it comes to computers so any help would be appreciated, since i was actually planning to start mixing songs starting tomorrow but that obviously won't be possible now  Thanks!

Have you tried rolling back the changes Auslogics made to your PC?

My sound was working fine before I brought my computer home and no damage was caused in transport I know that for sure. But when I hooked up my system again when I got home I had no sound. I checked all the cables and sound levels. nothing was on mute. And I had everything turned up. I have onboard sound and a soundcard my Onboard sound stopped working a while ago so i got this soundcard because we couldnt fix the onboard. this sound card has been working fine for the past 3 or 4 months now and all of a sudden it seems to have stopped. I checked for new versions for my sounds drivers and even updated them but to no avail. I rebooted my computer a few times to test and see if it was a start up error. and it wasn't I'm getting at wits end here. Somebody make my day and tell me its not my soundcard just dying. any help is appreciated thanks!

I had a long drawn out spyware problem a month ago. All is now well with my computer except the sound doesn't work.

I have a Dell XPS400 with Windows XP, SP3 and I use windows update and all my files are up to date.

My sound device is Sigmatel High Definition Audio CODEC. I have tried to update the driver which caused it not to work. The device rollback didn't work either so I did a system restore back to yesterday. The device now shows it is working but still no sound. (I have tried walking through the windows help to make sure that all my settings are correct)

I then went to Dell and downloaded their version of the driver but that appears to be the same one I have and it still doesn't work.

My spyware problem was truly awful and I even had to change a BIOS setting to get things back. I mention this because I wonder if that is the problem.

I recently lost audio playback on my pc. It runs Windows XP and uses Creative SB Audigy Sound Device. It worked just fine until recently. I booted the pc up for the day and discovered no sound. Under "Device Manager" the device is listed as working properly with up-to-date driver. It is the only audio device that can be "un-installed" or "enabled/disabled" other than some "UniModem half duplex audio device" that is disabled. Under "sounds and audio device properties", "Audio Tab" the default playback device is listed as "modem line #3 playback". I tried to change the audio playback to the "Creative SB Audigy", but their is no other option than the "Modem #3 Line Playback". In the same, "Sounds and Audio Device Properties", under the "Volume" tab, it says "No Audio Device". That is all I know and have no clue what the problem is or how to correct it. I have searched the Internet and found nothing but similar, yet different stories on this site. Can anyone please advise?

OS: XP/Pro Version 2002 SP2
Hardware: HP Pavillion a1132n with standard sound card (Realtek AC'97)

The system has been been stable for several years without problems of any sort. One morning I logged onto my computer and I had no sound!

When I go to "Sounds and Audio Device Properties" on the Control panel, it says "No Audio Device" and everything on the Volume, Audio and Voice tabs are grayed out.

When I go to the Device manager, it says that all of my devices are working properly and the Drivers are working. The Hardware tab in Sounds and Audio Device Properties also shows that everything is working properly. There are no hardware conflicts of any sort.

I've tried reinstalling the driver with no effect and I have uninstalled the driver and let the OS find and install a new driver. It chooses the built-in MS driver which is what was installed in the first place but still nothing works.

Nothing in the hardware or software has changed recently. No new software has been installed and no new hardware has been installed.

I run virus scans every night and nothing has been found (Symantec antivirus). I ran a manual scan and ran a spyware scanner and nothing was found by either of them.

I did a search on this forum for similar problems and found one but no solution was posted with it.

Hi,

I have a quite odd problem. I have an Abit AB9 Pro mobo with a Realtek sound chip on it. Earlier today I rebooted my machine and when it came back up Windows told me I didn't have a sound card installed.

I went into device manager and I saw that under "Sound, video and game controllers" that there were 5 NVIDIA Sound devices listed with the exclamation point icon.

I then deleted all of them and had device manager re-scan for hardware changes. It then failed to properly install the drivers. I then rebooted and disabled the audio on the mobo , deleted the devices from device manager, rebooted enabled the audio & let it reinstall. Still nothing working, but now it does show "High definition audio device" instead of the NVIDIA device.

Any ideas on how I can go about fixing this? Thanks for all input!

I'm using a Intel Atom inside notebook with Windows 7 starter.

Midway through a skype call the sound on my laptop stopped working. There is no sound through the speakers or headphones (the headphones definitely work). It is definitely not muted and when I go through the control panel to the devices and find my speakers it says "This device is working properly". When I open up the speakers control slider in the corner of the screen, the line which tells you how loud it is moves up and down as the video plays, so the computer seems to "think" that the volume still works. Any ideas what to do to fix it? Thanks.

Answer:Sound stopped working

i was going to suggest that you plug in your headphones into the microphone jack and set the mic jack as a headphone but that might also not work because your saying that the audio isnt working on the built in speakers, but still worth a try other then that i would say that your sound card is toast or needs updating driver/reinstalling

Hello,

I've got a Dell laptop here that isn't functioning properly. I can't get this to work for the life of me! I am currently using this laptop with a different hard drive, it's the install on the SSD that doesn't work. I know that the quick fix would be to simply reload windows, but I don't want the quick fix.

Basically, laptop works with Windows 7 install on a hard drive, no issues. On the SSD, where the ONLY applications loaded are Office 2013 and Firefox (and all the latest updates), the internet does not work (I can ping yahoo.com and get a response, so DNS is fine). The problem persists on IE and Firefox. I have no AV software other than MSE, and the problem persists in Safe Mode w/ networking. The hosts file is clean. The internet worked on the computer just fine when I loaded it, I hadn't used the SSD in a while and when I popped it in, the internet wasn't working. I believe something is getting in the way of port 80, but I can't figure out what. I have disabled all startup applications and all nonwindows services. The computer does not have bonjour. I have cleared history/cookies to no avail. I can't find anything suspicious in the running processes. I can't seem to turn off the windows antimalware process to test that, though.

Any ideas?

Answer:Internet not working, windows update, ping, DNS, etc. working fine

I decided to run hijack this and found two BHO's. It's funny that on my new install that I used a handful of times, I have adware, but on this install that's been going for years, I have nothing. Oh well. So I had "Crossrider" and "Coupon Companion". I removed all traces of both, yet still no go. It looks like this managed to install itself on 12/2... which had to be damn close to the date that I bought the SSD, however, I had internet activity as recent as 12/26. It was working one day, and then the next it wasn't. I've tried all the common fixes, like checking to see if everything is plugged in correctly, looking in Device Manager to make sure the volume is up and there are no "mute" boxes checked. Device Manager says the card is in working order. All of that, but I'm getting no sound. I know the speakers work because I'm running the sound through a Pioneer receiver and when I set it on "tuner" I can hear sound. So that's not the issue.

I'm thinking it's some kind of driver conflict or something, but I haven't added any software lately, so I don't know why things would've changed.

The bottom line is, any help you could give me would be appreciated much.

Answer:Sound on my PC stopped working suddenly

It would be useful to know brand, model, OS, and age of computer.
Have you looked in the device manager for red, yellow, or black flags indicating a driver problem?
If you have driven your computer to high volume for very long you may have "burned out" the sound components. In that case, if you have on-board sound, you will need to install a PCI sound card.

I used to listen a lot to music.

Two weeks ago the sound started to be distorted, now the is no sound at all.

The sound card status in device manager says everything is fine.
I've checked with headphones, external loudspeakers. Mute is not enabled.

I've tried to reinstall the driver- no help.

Should I replace the soundcard ?
How should I do that ?

Hi

You cannot replace the sound card because it?s a part of the motherboard.
In your case I would recommend removing the sound card from device manager list.
Then reboot the notebook and after the notebook has rebooted the sound card should be recognized again.

If this will not help, try the Recovery disk from Toshiba and set it to factory settings.
