Adding Windows 10 Clients to Windows Server Essentials 2016

Question: Adding Windows 10 Clients to Windows Server Essentials 2016

I am trying to add Windows 10 clients to Windows Server essentials 2016. It seem that in order for the server to see the clients I must the clients join the server server Domain. (Currently they are in a workgroup).

It looks like one has to change the Windows10 clients to access the WSE-2016 DNS. So in windows 10 I go to networks, bring up the adaptor setting. Bring up "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IvP4) and instead of "Obtain the DNS address automatically" change it to always get the DNS address on the WSE-2016 (found with ipconfig).
Then within Windows I use ?System?, ?about?, and Join the server DOMAIN. It now works. The client can now see the Server domain.
I can then see the Server files and the server can see the Windows 10 shared files.
There are still problems however.
When I reboot the Windows 10 client. I have a brand new user screen with only some of my original desktop icons showing. Do I have to essentially rebuild up everything on my desktop again!
Question: Is there not a way to have my original desktop appear when I am joined to the Domain.
Second, since there will be times when the server is off I used the router static DNS IP address as the alternative address in the above dialog box of the Windows10 clients. Seems to work since the client can access the internet even with the WSE 2016 off.
Here is my second question. I have a few home laptops as well. If I force the DNS to the server what happens when I travel. Do I have to manually go into the laptop network adaptor settings and change things back to the ?Obtain DNS automatically? each time?
There has got to be a better way. Anybody have any ideas.

Preferred Solution: Adding Windows 10 Clients to Windows Server Essentials 2016

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer:Adding Windows 10 Clients to Windows Server Essentials 2016

When Windows client computers are not joined to a domain they use the local SAM database to authenticate to the client computer. When the computer is domain joined you are using an AD user account to log into the computer. These accounts are going to have different SIDs as well as local profiles on the system. If you log into the computer with an account that has local admin access, you can simply move or copy the data from the local user account folder into the domain account user folder. The user folders inherit permissions from the root C:\Users\<username> so they should automatically gain access to the newly copied data.

I have just succeeded in hooking my Windows 10 client to Windows Server Essentials 2016. To do this I had to switch the W10 from a Workgroup to Domain setup.
All works fine except most of the desktop items originally on the client icons disappeared. Worse when I launce things like Outlook, Word etc. I have to initialize it from scratch.
How does one get all the settings, desktop icons etc. to re-appear on this new account that is now chanced from a Workgroup to a Domain setting.
I am an administrator (and only user) on both the W10 and WSE-2016. I see under users my original name on the W10/Workgroup and a new name. The new name does not have many files in it. I assume that?s the problem. But when I copy stuff from the old name folder across the programs are still not initialized correctly.

A recent cumulative update for Exchange 2016 was intended to add support for Windows Server 2016. But, after numerous reported issues, Microsoft has acknowledged a problem exists.

According to the release notes?

If you attempt to run Microsoft Exchange 2016 CU3 on Windows Server 2016, you will experience errors in the IIS host process W3WP.exe. There is no workaround at this time. You should postpone deployment of Exchange 2016 CU3 on Windows Server 2016 until a supported fix is available.

Once again, Microsoft?s testing of its own patches seems to have taken a backseat to accelerated release deadlines.

We have found recently that our Windows 8.1 clients are unable to connect to Server 2012 R2 shares (SMB 3.02). When trying to browse to them in Explorer we get "Windows can't find <UNC path>". Windows 7 clients can still connect to these
shares, only our 8.1 clients are affected. Attempting to access using the IP address instead of the host name makes no difference.
The 8.1 clients can still connect to shares on 2008 R2 servers. Server 2012 R2 to Server 2012 R2 also works.
No changes have been made to the clients or to the group policies which control them that could readily explain this issue.
Any advice on where to start troubleshooting this would be appreciated.

Ugh and here we go again.

I get into the office and none of the computers are working "online". The network is up and running fine, I can ping all nodes, no issues in the event logs on either the clients or server.

We log in as a domain user, and we're prompted with "Offline Files - Working offline". I can ping the server though. If I browse to "\\sbs01" im greeted with 1 share, Users.

Now if I log in as a local user and I browse to "\\sbs01" I'm greeted with all the shares.

This is really getting to me, does anyone have any advice or ideas what the hell is happening?

I have configured Windows Server 2008 fax and can send faxes from the server and Vista clients. I am unable to send faxes from XP clients. I can connect to the shared fax printer from the XP clients, however when I try to print to it, it appears to be working, but I never get the window asking for the fax number.

I've added the 32 bit drivers, as suggested at and in an article here on Experts-Exchange, but it still isn't working.

Anyone ever done this? A guy is looking at me to help him get a NAS box using the built in directory server to host home folders for his users from a Synology unit. I looked at an open source client but was unable to get it to authenticate properly to the NAS. Any advice? Scratching my head...

/edit...i should clarify it as an LDAP service, basically, want to bind Windows 7 client to an LDAP directory hosted by a Synology Disk Station...

Answer:Using Linux as a directory server for Windows clients

Are you trying to have the Synology host the directory server, or just the home directories?

No clue on the first, but I doubt they do that, I've never worked with one.
However, you can simply install samba and edit a few config files within linux to act as a domain controller for Windows clients, they join the domain just like a Windows server was running Active Directory. You can configure the path to the home directories in Samba to point to the Synology share.
(Disclaimer - I have only done this in test environment, and have no production experience with it's reliability long-term)

If you're less experienced with Linux, I believe turnkey has a samba "directory server" prebuilt VM you can download and manage via web interface. Again, I've messed around with a few of their appliances in testing, but never run one in production, and I have not used this particular appliance at all.

Good luck, and let us know what you come up with!

What Win7 do you have - is it 64-bit or 32-bit?. If it is 64-bit your
application maybe uses some 16-bit utility to print, which only works
on 32-bit Windows. I till now had no issues with net use to networked
printers for DOS type printing. It works without issues on 32-bit and

I am baffled by this one, and hope someone can help. I've installed literally dozens of gmail accounts into Outlook for clients, but this one is giving me fits. Every time I try to enter the account into a new Outlook 2016, the program hangs and then gives me an error message about an IMAP error, saying "Your IMAP server wants to alert you to the following:" with an error number and a link to "answers" from Google. Now, I know Outlook and Google very well. The suggestions they give are the ones I have already done:

enabled less secure apps access to the account
double-checked that the password is correct and logged into the account online
enabled IMAP connection in Gmail settings
logged in through the CAPTCHA site suggested, though no CAPTCHA appeared
checked to be sure that two-step verification is NOT turned on
created a brand new profile through the Mail section of Control Panel
entered suggested Gmail server and port settings manually
My method is to create a profile without an email account so that I'll have a pst file to contain contacts and calendar. Then, I add the email account. This is just crazy, I've never seen anything like it. Ideas would be most welcome!

Heya. I have barely any experience hosting game servers; the last time I did it was many years ago.
I'm wondering whether it's possible to host a game server (e.g. Counter Strike Source, or The Hidden) with a GNU/Linux operating system (probably Ubuntu) and have Windows-based clients connect to the server to play online.
I tried researching the issue but it seems this is not a popular question. Search results seem to indicate that it's perfectly doable, but reliable confirmation would be sincerely appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Hi Everyone,

I am running a Domain from a Windows 2008 R2 Server. At the moment Windows Updates are not working on the Server, or the corresponding clients.

On the Server I see the following error message -

Notice above that the "Most recent check for updates" is listed as never, as is the "Updates were installed".

I don't honestly believe that updates have never worked on the Server despite what is shown above.

From one of my Windows 7 client computers I see the following -

Notice in this instance that the "Most recent check for updates" is listed as the 23/04/2013, and "Updates were installed", is listed as 10/04/2013.

I tried the "Answer" shown in this link -

Windows Update Error 80072efd

After resetting the Proxy settings on the Server I saw the following -

Furthermore I have tweaked various Group Policy settings related to updates and there has been no improvement.

There is no 3rd party Firewall on either my Server or the Clients, so there is nothing to configure on this front.

Finally when setting up new clients they are able to install updates on my network whilst they are not Domain members. However as soon as the new client becomes a Domain member it gets the infamous Error 80072efd message.

Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards,

Answer:Can't update Windows on Server or Clients (error 80072efd)

The 2efd error is often related to connection problems - check the firewalls, and any GPOs related to Windows Updates.

We have 2 x Server 2008 R2 domain controllers and 120+ Windows 7 x64 clients.
We have a print server which runs Server 2008 R2. We have several other servers which also run Server 2008 R2.
An issue occurs intermittently and apparently at random, whereby a client will be unable to resolve the host/computer name of the print server.
When the issue occurs, we have confirmed the following:
- The client has a valid IP address.
- The client?s DNS server addresses are correct.
- The client can ping the IP address of the print server.
- The client can resolve the IP address of the print server by using nslookup and the server?s FQDN.
- The client cannot resolve the IP address of the print server by using nslookup and the host/computer name of the print server.
- The issue can occur regardless of which domain controller the client used to log on.
- When the output of ?ipconfig /displaydns? is printed to a text file, many of the other servers in our domain are present in the DNS cache but the print server is not.
- After the ?ipconfig /flushdns? command is executed, the client can resolve the host/computer name of the print server immediately.
If anyone has any thoughts on the cause of this issue and how to resolve it, I would be very grateful.

Answer:Windows 7 clients intermittently unable to resolve host name of server

Hi Squelchy,

How many computers are having this issue? From your statement below, I see one.

whereby a client will be unable to resolve the host/computer name of the print server.

Have you tried updating the NIC's driver?

What if you are logged on as a different User from that PC, are you able to replicate the issue?

This may be a very stupid question, but can't think of the logical answer. Let's say I have a Win2k print server and both Windows and Unix clients that need to print to the HP printers.

Now would it be possible to have a unix print server as well? Or no, because the two print queues would not know about each other, so what would happen when a windows client prints to printer1 the same time a unix client does?

Or is there a way to set up the unix clients to print through the Windows print server?

We also have a samba server in our network if that changes things?

Answer:Unix and Windows clients printing to a Win2k Print Server?

If you run samba on the clients, you can send to Windows print queues. I don't have any links on hand, but check out for a how-to.

I support a network consisting of a Windows domain running off a Windows 2003 domain controller/file server/print server where most of the clients are running Windows XP (balance are Mac OS X machines). I've been experimenting lately with Windows 7 Professional, but am finding that any time I add a printer in Windows 7 and connect to one of the shared printers hosted on the Server 2003 machine, all other clients are unable to use the printer. The blocking happens gradulally; when the printer is first installed, the XP users will occasionally get an error when printing (complains that drivers aren't installed for the printer), but will usually be able to print. If after setting up that printer I actually print a page from the Win7 machine, that will ultimately block them completely. They'll get the missing drivers error any time they try to print or try to open the Properties window for that printer.

The printers in question are Kyocera Mita 3035 multi-purpose machines; all drivers are installed on the server, and this has worked well with all other client machines. The network is new within the last four years, with Cat.6 cabling and gigabit ethernet (copper) switches in between. The server is a Dell PowerEdge server running Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2, with all updates applied.

I'm hoping this is something that someone has seen before. For now I've built a workaround by setting up another shared printer on the server specifically for the Windows 7 mach... Read more

Are they picking other updates up still?
IIRC, WSUS only downloads a minimal SP - so that the clients have to be fully updated before they will see the SP offered (but I could be wrong - it's been a while)

could this be caused by network issues? They are using ATT DSL for internet access, with a ATT model, that is referred to as ""

They also have a zyxel smart switch, it seems that both ATT DSL and Zyxel switch are acting as DHCP, and both might be issuing IP addresses.

Another thing I noticed that they are using IP phones for all office phones.

If I manually start "C:\Windows\system32\Essentials\ClientDeploy.exe" -LaunchedFrom:resume -Server: the systems says "Your account is not a member of Administrators". The account I'm logged on with is __clientsetup__$.
Below is the log file, in the end it says "Add user to local admin group.". That clearly didn't happen (I checked).
Any suggestions?

Cheers, Hans

I have a WSE I use for backing up and stoaring data. I have like 10 hard drives connected to it 8 of which are running drive pool.

The Motherboard is toast, and well although it wasn't having any issues keeping up with some cameras and file storage and backups, I guess it might be time to replace it with my 4770k office PC (ex gaming rig) and upgrade that machine.

If I simply swap out the MB's are boot off the Hard drive with WSE be able to adapt to the new hardware? Can I at least recover the CD Key because I can't seem to find it anywhere.

I am currently having an issue were Windows 7 computers can not connect to Server 2016 (domain). Right away I get a "The logon attempt failed".
I know that user information is correct, because I can connect using any Windows 10 computer. I have tried this from multiple Windows 7 computers, they all give the same error. I don't have any problems at all with Windows 10.

So, this seems to be isolated to Windows 7.
Has anyone seen this or know how to get around this issue?

I appreciate your help!

I am a first time windows server essentials user and i recently added my computer into the server but there is a conflict due to some kind of registry error and i can't delete the registry file from my computer since there is no user found on the permission for drop box. How do i gain permission to delete the registry

Answer:Registry Problem in Windows Server 2012 essentials

what do you mean by "added my computer into the server" as it's not clear what you did.
and clarify "there is no user found on the permission for drop box"
it should list local accounts and possibly the SID of a deleted domain user (if you mean you added your computer to the domain that Server 2012 Essentials creates)

I have not tested this work-around yet, but probably will tonight.

Just bought new Spectre x360 convertible computer with Windows 2016. Left computer idle for a few minutes (15) and returned to screen saver.  Clicked on the enter button to get to password screen and entered password.  After entering it, the wheel of death started and kept spinning.  When I tried to turn the computer off, I may have accidentally hit stand by mode.  Then the screen started flashing.  I quickly unplugged everything.  It did come back on and I didn't lose anything.   What should I do so that this doesn't happen again?

Historically I've used the following syntax with NetMon to determine which switch/switchport each of my server interfaces are connected to:

nmcap.exe /network "<interfacename>" /DisableLocalOnly /capture SNAP.EtherType == 0x2000 /StopWhen /TimeAfter 2 min /file "<filename>.cap"

With MMA, I can just do a filter for LLDP, and get the same information, at least on my Windows 10 laptop that is.  When I run a capture either locally on a Windows 2016 server, or remotely against
a Windows 2016 server there are no LLDP packets captured.

Am I doing something wrong?

According the issue, I suspect that your machine created a new user profile in this case. The user profile path is stored in registry, here
is the path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList(check the picture).  Please check the value of ProfileImagePath.

Also, please take a screenshot of C:\Users and post is here.William Tan

We have an important LOB application (QuickBooks 2018) that requires that requires Internet Explorer 11 for QB to operate correctly.  Unfortunately our server runs Windows Server 2012 Essentials as an operating system (not R2).  From reviewing
various Microsoft documents, I realize that IE 11 is not supported on Server 2012.  However, we need to be able to run QuickBooks, which requires that version of IE.  Upgrading the server OS to 2012 R2 would take hours, because there is no in-place
upgrade option.  We would have to reinstall and configure the OS again from scratch.
Is there anything we can do to resolve this problem?
Thanks for any assistance you can offer.

Hello, I just finished installing Windows 2000 serv. I have NT4. What im trying to do is make 2000 available to my users. NT4 is currently my PDC. I want to make 2000 my BDC, but it wont work because 2000 wants a 2000 PDC. Should I make a new domain and make trust, or should I have my 2000 logon to the NT4 domain? I want to use 2000 for internet hosting. If 2000 access the NT4 Domain, can I set rights on items in the 2000 server? I also want to use Active Dir. What should I do? I dont want to convert NT4 into 2000 yet. should I make the NT4 my BDC and make the 2000 the PDC? or is there a way 2000 will work with NT4 as if 2000 was NT4. There has to be a way. Please HELP

Answer:Adding Windows 2000 SRV to NT Server

I don't know what kind of scale you're working on and whether you are going to upgrade more servers, but I'm doing the same thing on a large network at the moment.

I've decided the best way to do this so as to protect the current domain and systems is to create a new domain for all Windows 2000 machines and create a trust between these and the NT 4 machines. As we upgrade the NT4 machines to WIN2K they will in turn be added to the WIN2K domain and eventually we will end up with one domain (or more) of WIN2K machines.

That's the theory anyway.

I went to install Windows Server 2016 on my Gigabyte 7PESH3 system, which is housed in a Supermicro 4U or pedestal SC747-1400B-TX chassis and I still cannot get an Operating System installed with this system. When I attempt to do so during create partition with the Windows installer after loading the driver by clicking load driver, browse, USB Drive(C, Windows 10 and Server 2016 Raid Driver Folder, starport64, and either Areca Starport-64 SATA RAID Host Adapter or Areca Virtual S/8I RAID Driver it still can't find the drives.

I have a similar problem with Linux except with Linux it's supposed to automatically find the driver on the USB flash drive for the most part and it can't because I don't know where to put it and no Linux distro tells you how or where to put it in the documentation, but instead just tells you how to do software RAID and that doesn't help. Also, everyone on here just tell me RAID just complicates things and that's not helping either. Therefore, basically I have about a 3000+ dollar 4U server that I can't use or get any use out of because I can't get a server operating system installed on it. Can anyone help or do I need to try Microsoft's forum about Windows Server 2016 and the appropriate Linux distro forum for help with the appropriate Linux distro.

Answer:Why can't Windows Server 2016 find the hard drives after loading RAID card driver?

Is it a nice new shiny driver from the manufacturers' website or off a disk that came in the box?

I have a very frustrating problem. I want to use Windows 2008 R2 Terminalserver with Outlook 2016.
Unfortunately every time a user starts Outlook, he installs the 64 bit Components. It seems there is one solution: Installing Windows Search Role and starting Outlook in Installation Mode.
Seems to work. With that solution, there is another problem: It is not possible to search in pst-files. Windows error log says event ID 3036. Looks like, Windows Search cannot index pst-files (in network). The possible solution to disable indexing for Outlook
does not work because the configuration change got reseted after relogin. This might happen because of our Roaming users.
As you can see, I have one problem. When Windows Search is installed, pst-files are not searchable. When Windows Search is not installed, Outlook 64 bit Components get installed every start of Outlook.

Is there anybody who has other ideas for a solution?

Thank you for your help.

I just upgraded to Windows 2003 server for my domain controller, and am in the process of adding users. But I am having a problem.

Whenever I try to complete the 'add a user' routine, I am told that their password doesn't meet the security policy settings. I've checked and double checked all the security policy settings for passwords (both locally and domain wide), and everything should be working. Do I have to reboot or something? That would be odd for a server....

Help please!

Answer:Adding a user in Windows 2003 Server

Windows 2003 Server employs the complex password policy, this means the password must be of a certain length (think its 6) and not based on the userís account name. It must contain three of the following:
Uppercase characters
Lowercase characters
Arabic numerals
Nonalphanumeric characters
Try this and see if this allows you to create a user, by default the strong password policy is disabled, so it may have been enabled somewhere along the line. If not post back!

Sorry if this is the wrong forum for this, but i couldnt see any obvious places for this.

anyway, i was just wondering if it was possible to add users in windows 2003 server automatically rather than having to add each one seperatly, i mean how to big businesses do it? i can think logically. i dont know alot about scripting, but my collegues know a fair but, so i dont know if that would be a solution.

basically im just trying to find out ways of cutting down the time when buiilding a Windows 2003 Server or windows 2003 Small business server. i realise most of this is waiting, so i dont know if any of u guys have had any luck.

thanks anyway, DT

You can try using the "net user /add" command. Used this in the past with a batch file to create a lot of user accounts.

I am troubleshooting KB3139398 right now. Its failing to install on 100+ machines on our network.

KB3139398 addresses a USB vulnerability. Many machines on our network have a Group Policy in place to prevent users installing USB devices. Only admins can as per the setup instructions below;

All machine with the above policy in place fail the update. All without the policy in place take the update.

I have tried the KB3139398 update from our WSUS and also as a standalone download from the Microsoft Download centre and get the same failure.

Microsoft - can you fix please?

Question: adding clients

I currently have a Home Phoneline Network. It runs at 10Mbps and works fine. I have 3 desktops and my three College kids with laptops connecting using USB Phoneline adapters, when they come home. I am limited only by my phone jacks, which luckily enough I have plenty thruout the house. I would like to implement a wireless solution so that the laptops have more mobility. I have only seen, predominantly, 4 port wireless Cable/Dsl Gateway Routers which would limit me to less connection that I now have. What would be the easiest way to increase my client capacity if I go wireless.

Thanks in advance

Answer:adding clients

You might need to buy something like this. I searched google for a while to find anything close to what might work for you. I cant find to much.

Hi, i've recently been doing work with an internet cafe and we need a solution for re-imaging. I have an image created with ghost but I have no software to use to distribute it and the client PC's only have CD-R/RW and the image is 4.3GB.

I tried to use Ghost recovery disk to map the network drive where I have the image but the recovery disk didn't couldn't detect my network card (I'm guessing it didn't support the specific NIC of the client PC's)
I need a software solution that will let me re-image any computer from a centralized location (server) over the network. We have about 40-50 client PC's. So far we have been doing manual installs (The entire server crashed and took all the old software with it so we're starting from scratch)

If anyone could help, we could open this business a lot sooner than expected with software that can do this!

Answer:Need: Server-based re-imaging application (Remotely Re-image clients from server)

A free solution would clonezilla or even RIS or WDS
EDIT: You also might want to look into Steady State

I implement Point of Sale systems. Currently our POS network may have a mix of Windows platforms, mostly 7 Pro and 8.1. Windows updates need to be installed, but we handle this process manually, with the setting "download updates but let me choose
when to install them". I'm looking for a way that our clients can sit down periodically on the main computer and install updates (during non-business hours), and also push them out to the other computers in the workgroup (which may be on a different OS).
Is this possible?

I have a new pc. Dell Inspiron 3650
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6700 CPU @ 3.40GHz 3.41 GHz
16.0 GB (RAM)
64-Bit Op. Sys. x64 based processor
I installed the office pro plus 2016 with a key from seller.
It installed fine on 12 7 16 then today 12 8 16 none of the office programs will open.
The home and Student 2016 also does the same thing. I installed the pro and the home and student does the same thing.
The pc came with Win10 home I purchased from Dell Win10 pro. I called Dell support and they helped me to install pro from the usb.
One thing I never activated the home and student before downloading the purchased office pro. the office pro key worked so I didn't think I needed it.
After all the trouble with the pro I uninstalled pro and tried to use the home and student. the product key worked on it also. but the same thing happens
I get the error box
Microsoft Word has stopped working
windows is checking for a solution to the problem
then it changes to
Microsoft Word has stopped working
A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.
Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.
needless to say I have heard nothing.
Does anyone out there have any suggestions?
Thank you.
Dell user since my first 266.

Answer:Home and Student 2016, and Office Pro Plus 2016 won't work in windows 10 pro

I have a 20+ Windows XP SP3 workstations all joined to a Windows 2000 domain. 10 at site A, 10 at site B, joined together via an IPSec VPN tunnel with Cisco routers. Site A is where the domain controllers reside, and all machines on that side of the network work fine and do not exhibit any issues.

The problem is at site B, there is no DC on that side of the network so all machines just VPN back to site A.

This is what happens at site B...

I power up the computers, they do not apply group policy, slow log on (DNS issue?), but it joined the domain just fine, my guess is with NetBios. The log on screen comes up like normal, I enter in my username and password and log on into the domain. The log on box disappears but then things just sit at a standstill, at a blank blue screen and it will never load the user's profile unless I unplug the computer's network cable or power down the DCs back at site A.

Machines back at Site A work fine. They log on, apply GPOs, run scripts, and map shares all under and the user has a good desktop within 10 seconds.

This boggles me... I tried removing the roaming profile of the user on the machines at site B (all machines exhibit the same issue) thinking that the issue was a profile/NTUSER.DAT corruption.

But the issue still persists once I log in again. Then I went into Active Directory and created a new user called 'test' with default user groups. I log in with that account and the profile loads fine, still... Read more

Answer:Windows XP SP3 clients hang at wallpaper after logon to Windows 2000 domain

2k domain hmmm, the memory cells are grinding....

if a unknown user can connect and authenticate but on restart it cant, sounds like its using open encryption for the unknown user and switching to closed, which would cache and would be lost over time or restart. Kerberos would be trying to establish on UDP through the vpn. If the Kerberos couldn't establish via UDP it could have that effect. check the event logs on the client for kerberos errors

if it is you could try forcing TCP for kerebos
create a DWORD value "MaxPacketSize" and set it to decimal "1"
restart the box

Any other errors in evetlogs at either end which could give a clue?

Installing a new Dell T130, 2016 Essentials in a small office to join a current domain and replace a 2008 server.
I have 21 days grace time from joining the domain I believe to make it the Primary Domain Controller.

Didn't even get to that point yet though. Just out of the box I booted it up, and hit Cancel when it got to
the auto config wizard as you are supposed to do when joining it to a current domain.

So that's all I did, didn't even rename the server or set a static IP yet, none of that.
Just hit cancel on that first config wizard.

The server went into some background configuration thing and disk usage is pegged.
The HD activity LED is solid green and the HDs (RAID-1) are just full on chattering away.

I just remoted in.... 12 hours after powering up and it still says it's running configuration when I try to open the
Dashboard to start configuring things. It won't let me.

Have setup a ton of servers going back to 2000 server. My first 2016 server, but I've never seen this kind of thing
before, anybody else seen this?

Hi guys,

I'm using Windows 8 under VMWare Fusion on a Mac to access Windows 7 machine which acts as a file server. Both are part of Workgroup. The problem I experience is that after every reboot Windows 8 forgets the credentials despite checking the box "remember". Anybody else have this problem? How did you resolve it?

Answer:Windows 8 Clients forgets credentials to Windows 7 after restart

Found the problem. Apparently, it happens to Windows 7 users too.

One needs to go to Control Panel -> User Accounts and Family Safety -> Credential Manager -> Windows Credentials and add a Windows Credential. If done this way, it will be saved and assigned Persistence: "Enterprise", whereas if done after reboot it will be "login only", last only current session and won't be saved in the system.

Visio files are received as attachments in Outlook 2016. Visio Viewer 2016 and IE11 are also installed on Windows 10 (1607).
Previewing the Visio file (VSD in this case) is successful. However, when you try to open the Visio file, IE11 attempts to open it (as expected) but only displays a blank page.
Does anyone know if there is a fix for this issue?   Other articles suggest that Visio Viewer 2016 does not support IE11.

.. hoping I can get some help on this. Driving me nuts!

Since upgrading to Windows Server 2016, WOL doesn't work for me. I've ruled out network or router issues, since it works perfectly fine on my Windows 7 machine.

I have 3 NICs in a team, but that's irrelevant, since the WOL doesn't work even if I disabled the teaming. One thing I did notice is that when I shutdown my Windows 7 machine, the NICs remain lit. However, the NICs on my Windows Server 2016 completely turn off. I don't recall if that was the case when I was using 2012 on the same hardware, but it seems strange to me. If the NICs are completely off, I can't imagine there is a way for them to receive magic packets.

I checked the UEFI and all the necessary options are enabled for WOL. I also tried upgrading the NIC drivers on the server but that didn't help. I read that Windows 10 has a "fast startup" option that messes with WOL, so I disabled it in the Group Policy settings on the server, but that didn't work either.

If anyone has any ideas, I'd be grateful for the help.

"Patch Tuesday" broke our install of Outlook 365. It was working fine on Monday and on Tuesday it was hanging on "Processing." So I restored back to the last restore point before the update and it worked great after that. Yesterday it re-installed the updates, and again Outlook didn't load. Restoring again today "fixed" it. Now it wants to update again, so I will disable updates until the problem is fixed. I don't know which particular "patch" is causing the problem; there were about 22 of them that installed.

i am retiring a DC which holds the DHCP role for my domain.

i moved my DHCP database from one 2k3 DC (old) to another 2k3 DC (new) following the instructions from

i have also authorized the new server and everything looks fine. i had no problems during the database move other than having to specify DNS dynamic updates registration credentials on the new DC. i used the domain admin because from what i read it just needed an account that can authenticate. the old DC / DHCP server did not have anything in there.

my problem is that when i stop DHCP on the old server and try to test with renewing the IP on a client, the clients are not seeing the new server and they are unable to pull a DHCP address. i have done a lot of searching and reading but i cannot find anything relating to the issue or how to see what is happening behind the scenes in order to diagnose.

any suggestions?

thank you!

Answer:new DHCP server not seen by clients

you are starting the DHCP service on the new server? No firewalls? The clinets can ping the server? Get wireshark on it and see whats going on, make it simple, cut it down to a basic network, 1 host, the DHCP server and 1 switch

I normally just move the data bases and it works.

At work, we have replaced our old server (Win2000 Server) with a newer, much faster one (on Server 2003). It's used for authentication as well as running our databases.

Why would all the other computers on the domain run way slower now? This occurs when they boot up, someone logs on, and when simply running progs. and accessing data. Most of them are on Win2K, one is on Win98.

The new server has a different name than the older one, so could they still be trying to access the previous machine? Or... is there something they're all looking for which used to be on the older one but wasn't copied/installed on the new one?

I really feel like they're looking or waiting for something, but I don't know what.

Answer:New server, now clients run slower

Hello, I am in the IT dept in my company, and I am having trouble figuring out how to fix a printer issue. One of our locations recently had their Ricoh printer swapped out for a newer Ricoh, and now nobody can print to it. If they try to print from an application, it will crash the application, and a test print will fail as well. I am however able to print a test page from the server that the printer is shared from.
I have tried the following so far:
- Removing the printer from a client PC and adding it again
- Manually removing the print driver and reinstalling it
- Reinstalling the drivers on the server using an updated Universal Print driver from Ricoh's website

Thanks in advance for any suggestions anyone has.

Hey all.

Anyone out there using Software Update Server to distribute patches to their clients?

I'm having a hell of a time to get it to work.

Here's what I've done so far:

I installed SUS1.0 SP1 on a patched and updated Windows 2003 Server.

I sync'd the server with the windows servers to receive all the updates and created the settings file to include all pertinent info.

I installed the latest WUAU template with the four options and created a new GPO to force the settings out to each client:

Auto Updating: Option 4 (Auto download and schedule installation) at 1pm every day (it's a test setup).

I've set up the GPO to point to the intranet server.

Rescheduling is enabled to wait 5 minutes after system startup.

No auto-restart is enabled.

The client is an XP Pro machine with SP1 installed. It has been added to the AD Domain and I've checked its effective settings and it is receiving the GPO changes.

But nothing happens at 1pm. It's pissing me off...

Anyone have any suggestions?

Answer:MS SUS Server not updating clients.

This website has been a great source

Ok, I have a small domain (less than 30 clients). For security reasons I am not using DHCP. All servers are running Windows Server 2003 and all clients are XP.

I am a network admin by trade, but have worked with Windows since the beginning, so I have a pretty fair understanding of how the domain works. I understand that DNS is the backbone and that all sorts of problems will pop up if the DNS isn't working correctly. When I check the DNS on the domain controller I only see the servers and one client when I know damn well that there are at least 10 clients currently running.

My first question is this: if DHCP is not running, do I need to build the DNS records manually? Does DNS require DHCP in order to authenticate the clients and create their records dynamically?

All of the clients are placed in Active Directory and their suffixes match the DNS servers.

I'm pinning my hopes on DNS being the source of my problems, as I am getting really weird issues - systems refusing to allow any user except admins sign on, print servers refusing to allow anyone other than a local admin to map to their printer, despite "everyone" having full rights in the security tab, etc, etc. The problems are driving me nuts.

I have a small office network with about 15 clients, the server is running Win 2K3, XP clients. It has been running great for about a year. Tonight I tried to add a VPN server role (I keep asking myself why I wanted to do that). So, I shut down the Windows Firewall/ICS service, and started up the VPN role. Never even tried to use it.

Then, I found that my network was running slowly, but still works, including running applications from the clients that are located on the server. But, when I try to browse to the server from any of the clients, the server does not show up when I browse through Microsoft Windows Network to the domain. But all the other clients are there. When I go to the server, and try to browse the same way, none of the clients show up. Well, that's weird, so I removed the VPN server role, and restarted Firewall/ICS service, rebooted the server. I can ping using IP addresses both ways. I can even use the server to control the clients with remote desktop connection. But still, they don't show up in explorer. Clients are still using the server as DHCP server and domain controller. But things are noticeably slower, and I can't browse to it. Any ideas???

Thanks to all in advance for any help!!
