Dual Pane Explorer -- PLEASE, PLEASE!

Question: Dual Pane Explorer -- PLEASE, PLEASE!

You know, I would really love a dual pane option for Explorer.Lots of times (most times) when managing my files, I want a source window and a destination window to drag the files between. It's such a bore having to open Explorer twice. Especially when you can't just click the Windows Explorer icon on the new Task Bar a second time, because that simply minimises the Explorer window you've just opened!Instead you have to right-click the icon and choose a different folder in the list. The new Explorer window pops up over the first one, so then you have to drag the second window clear before you can use them.So now you have this silly sequence: left-click; right-click, move-the-mouse, left-click; left-click-and-dragPLEASE give us some way of handling this better. Either:1/ An optional dual-pane view for Explorer (like Director Opus, et al, offers)2/ A single click way of opening two, non-overlapping Explorer windows (my preferred option)Is there any chance at all of this, do you think?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am not sure if I can describe this well.
When I drag and drop in Win7 to copy files I have two windows open. Each has two panes. The left is a hierarchical navigation pane and the right is pretty standard XP style. When I grab a folder and hesitate over the place I need to drop the file it pops open. Good stuff!
But the pane moves the files all over and next thing I am hovering over another folder which, if I am lucky, I notice and I hold off dropping. The next folder pops open relocating things yet again.
Is there a way to stop the file pop open from moving the files? Holding the folder position and dropping down its contents would be fine, but moving up from where I am hovering is a problem as I am now about to drop the file in the wrong place.

This is repeatable by opening two file windows, dragging the file to be moved to a fairly deep folder for its destination. A few things have to happen - left side pane used for your drop, left side window full (scroll bar showing), destination folder near bottom. When your destination folder is reached will pop open moving the destination folder up when its contents are shown and you can easily drop into a sub folder by accident.

I have received an e-mail response from the creator of Windows Double Explorer / Windows Dual Pane Explorer (names seem to be interchangeable) . My apologies for not knowing the proper terms, but I hope anyone will be able to understand what I’m about to describe.

According to information provided by the creator of WDE / WDPE one uninstalls the program by doing the following:

Navigate to C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs. There you should find a shortcut file (look for a file not a folder) named Windows Dual Pane Explorer. Select that shortcut file, options click and writedown the target path of the shortcut. Delete the shortcut. Navigate to the location the target path dictates. There you should find both a zipped and an unzipped folder of WDE / WDPE. Delete the folders and also any other shortcut files to WDE / WDPE that you may have created and you’re done.

Apparently WDE / WDPE is never actually installed. Instead WDE/WDPE initially downloads a folder named WDE Portable zipped. When this download folder is launched it unzips another folder named WDE Portable unzipped into the same directory. During the unzipping process a shortcut is created on the desktop that points back to the unzipped folder. Thusly WDE/WDPE never gets listed into Windows Control Panel’s Program Files & Features section. That’s why it can’t be uninstalled as one might ordinarily expe... Read more

When I open an instance of windows explorer, the navigation pane show little or nothing (no drives, folders, etc.). Also the preview pane does not show a preview for any selected files (See Capture1.JPG).
If I open a second (or higher) instance of windows explorer, the navigation pane functions properly (the preview still does not show) (See Capture2.JPG).
I have previews set to show (See Capture3.JPG).
Also occasionally, the file icons will be blank instead of showing the file type specific icon. When this happens, the address bar also seems to take a long time to load. The load bar will stop before reaching the end and won't finish (See Capture4.JPG).

Does anyone know what is going on or how to fix this?

FYI I am running 64 bit Windows 7 Pro.

Answer:Windows Explorer: Navigation Pane and Preview Pane Bug

Try Explorer++ and see if you get the same problem.

Need to enable "Folders" view.
If it works then you can rule out problems with system files and it's probably a buggy shell extension.

It's portable and runs without installation.

Is it possible to have no Nav Pane when opening a Desktop folder, but have Nav Pane when opening Win Explorer? Like it was in WinXp/Win98/Win95?
When I disable Nav Pane, it disappears for Desktop folders and Windows Explorer.

I think the answer was 'no' for Win7.

I installed Classic Start Menu hoping one of it's features could do it. If it does, I've not been able to enable it. Other than that, Classic Start Menu is a super improvement.

Hi to all, i have a laptop running Windows 7 Professional. The problem is strange and havent had it on any other Windows 7 machine.

If i click the folder icon on the bottom tool bar (windows explorer) then in the left hand pane expand the C drive then right click on any folder it instantly displays a dialog saying Explorer has experienced a problem and needs to close, windows is
looking for a fix for this problem (cant remember exact wording) then Explorer.exe restarts. This happens on the local C drive and Network drives.
I though it could be a permissions problem so have taken ownership of all files & folders on the C drive which made no difference, i have removed the laptop from our server / domain and it is still the same / no change.
Can anyone shed any light on this problem or offer any ideas on fixing it? the laptop is only a few months old and is i5 / 4GB RAM Dell machine running Windows 7 Pro SP1 office 2003 Pro, checked for virus & adware & all clean.

Answer:Explorer.exe crashes when righ click on item in left pane on windows explorer nothing in system logs, explorer.exe restarts.

The faulting module (Fault Module Name: SHELL32.dll) shell32.dll is a Windows system file however the file that is actually causing the crash may be a third party file which from the symptoms
may be a third party context menu handler.
The following link has some info and a download to ShellExView which you can use to selectively disable third party context menu handlers to find out a problematic one:
You could try disabling all non-Microsoft context menu handlers and then, if the problem resolves, re-enable them one at a time to see which one was the problem.
BTW, the error should be logged in the Event Viewer Application log as a Application Error involving explorer.exe

Been grappling for some time to customizing the right pane of either Win7 or Win10 (not sure if they respond the same) to allow permanent column and column title arrangements. Ideally I would like to apply such attributes to a specific folder and all it's sub-folders. An example is below:
I would also love to be able to set these columns as fixed widths, but this is not as important as the specific columns themselves.

I am trying to tidy up my hard drives and seem to have a lot of duplication, some intentionally as backups but others not. I had been using Ultra Explorer to do this as I could look at 2 or more drives at the same time in dual-pane view and it gave you folder sizes which Windows Explorer doesn't do. Unfortunately, when I viewed my music folder in Ultra Explorer it gives some strange results, saying there is no content in a folder when I know it is there and I can no longer trust it.

Please can anyone recommend software which shows the breakdown of files and folders and allows you to do this in dual-pane view. I have tried Folder View by MindGems but this doesn't seem to have a dual-pane view. I am running Vista.

Thanks for any help.

Answer:Show folder size and dual-pane view?

Try xplorer˛ - lite, I've used it for years and I really like it.

It has dual panes and to show sub-folder size hit Ctrl+D.

They also have a paid version, but the free one does everything I need.

Anyone know how to do this or must I use Snap each time?

"Windows", as in an explorer window, should remember their last size. So if you resize the window to the size of the snap feature, the next time its open it should remember.

A fairly simple question:

Has anyone tried to (or found a third party app) that can put the details pane back to the bottom of the File Explorer windows, like it was in 7. It was of great use to me when reading tags and other information. In 8, it just takes needless width space from the windows.

Shell32.dll but modifyng it crashes windows 8 (at least in CP/RP), havent tried in RTM yet.

Hi, Wish you all good tidings. Have been using Win7 nearly 6 months with a recent sp1 update. In the explorer pane (LEFT) , as you move thru the folders , and click the thumbnail on a particular folder it opens the contents of the said folders on the RIGHT pane.Let me say that a particular folder is SNAPPED (can I have the exact terms please ).
Ok I have snapped DIFX and am trying to expand Alwil software. Image-1

Alwil software expands as expected. Image-2.

Next I snap ALwil software -Image -3

I try to expand the folder of Alwil software. It disgustingly goes and sits at the bottom. -Image -4

It happens everytime and if folder has still more folders it is still irritating. I have to compress the folder and expand it again , and only then it goes to the top. I have seen this behavior in Win 7 premium editions too.

Answer:Explorer Pane behavior.

Try this. Go to Organize-.Folder and search options and uncheck Automatically expand to current folder.

I have a problem with my explorer. On the left I see the folders but the right pane is completely blanc. And when I open the explorer, it can be shut down and explorer.exe uses 99% cpu.

The taskmanager is the only way to shut it down.

I've already scanned for viruses with my Norton Internet Security 2004 and did a online scan twice with McAfee and Trend Micro. But there are no viruses.

I've also scanned my computer for spyware twice with spybot and adaware and everything seems to be fine.

In the "save mode" it all works fine, but in the normal mode my right pane stays blanc.

Can somebody help me? It started suddenly yesterday....

Question: Explorer Task Pane

At work we have Compaq D510 short forms with Windows XP Pro, SP3. One of my coworkers wants to be able to e-mail pictures from her 'My Pictures' folder by selecting the files and then clicking the 'email this file' in the Common Task Pane, when you do this Outlook Express comes up with the attached files but it won't send. It says it cant because of a socket error 11001 and that it cant find the SMTP server. I am thinking I need to reset the File properties in Tools>Folder Options >File types but I am not sure which one Explorer is invoking to Send Mail, I have looked in Google, no luck yet. My machine does this just fine but uses MS Outlook 2007 , which is why I think a File Type association is goofed up.

PS I have tried resetting the common task pain in My Computer >Properties.

I've searched quite a lot on this subject but have not been able to find a solution.

In Win 8 Windows Explorer, the preview pane seems to be able to display previews of all file types I really use except the type I use most-- eml email files. Is it possible to get the preview pane to show a preview of an eml file?

In searching the web I ran across reference to an old app named PreviewConfig that I believe was written for Vista, but apparently it does not work in Win 8, although I have not tried it-- kind of fear messing something up.

I have noticed that if I simply manually edit an eml file's extension from eml to mht-- it will be displayed in the preview pane.

I have hundreds if not thousands of eml files saved to disk. I really don't want to change all of them to mht because that eliminates email functionality of the file. Meaning, I would not be able to double-click the file, open it and respond to or forward it as an email message.

Thanks for any thoughts on this.

Answer:Display eml in Explorer Preview Pane

just a thought ,why not do a bit of a split screen with windows explorer and your .eml default email program . might take a little longer to preview each email ,,i use it like this with windows live mail to view my saved emails. like in the attachment , if need it just install windows live mail ,and set it to default for .eml files

I got a problem with the sidebar in windows explorer. Sometimes when i open it the only things that shows is the favorites, libraries and homegroup titles but non of the folders or links that are supposed to be there.

It stays like that for a while and then its back to normal (but only if/when i open a new explorer window). Im able to access e.g. the libraries when its like this but it looks like its searching for them but cant find them.

Help is very much appriciated

It can take a while to load everything on various machines, depending on hardware and configuration.

If you don't want it to load all folders, ( which takes time);

there are other tutorials there on this and similar matters.

By the way, that window is known as the "Explorer Navigation Pane", "Sidebar" refers to something else.

In Windows Explorer in the Desktop mode, there is a navigation pane on the left hand side. At the top, there is a spot for your favorite folders, so you can navigate directly to them easily. Below that are other sections, like "Homegroup" and "This PC." Whenever you open Windows Explorer, it automatically focuses on This PC in the navigation pane by default. Does anyone know of any way to get it to focus on Favorites by default, rather than This PC, without having to create a shortcut? I'd like it to do that even if I press Windows Key+E

I just installed a fresh version of Win 7 Ultimate. I enclose a screenshot of how my Explorer window and folder pane looks like. I am not happy with it.

There are two top level items, Favorites and Desktop. When I was running the RC I did not have a desktop item, instead all the items sorting under Desktop in (the screenshot below) were on the same level as Favorites. There were Favorites and then a white space and then my Libraries and then a white space and then my Profile and then a white space and then Computer and then a white space and so on.

1) Can I get the spacing in between items back somehow?
2) Can I remove the Homegroup and the Network icons?
3) Can I move the computer item upwards in the sort order?

Hello Gridsystems,

Q1) You might see if using either one of these below may be able to adjust your navigation pane to how you like it for this.Navigation Pane - Show All Folders
Navigation Pane - Automatically expand to current folder
Q3) Yes, you can remove Homegroup and Network from the navigation pane.Network - Add or Remove from Navigation Pane
Homegroup - Add or Remove from Navigation Pane
Q4) Sorry, but you cannot move the groups themselves in the navigation pane.

Hope this helps,

I don't know about the error dialog, but as far as I know, you can't modify the tag info with Explorer, regardless of which version of W7 is used. However, you should be able to edit it with some third party software. I know that Creative's MediaSource player can do this, so I'm sure that others can also. How those changes might appear in Explorer, I don't know.

Hi, Usually repairing Internet Explorer fixes this issue.

Read the following, all the way down to the bottom!

If you have XP, there is another method: Since XP comes with IE 6, the entry for IE does not show in Add/Remove Programs, and you cannot run the repair utility from> try this:

Read about it first!

Start button>Run

Type in the run line this:[cmd] and hit Enter key once.

Type this next to the cursor in the black box:

sfc /scannow (one space after the c) and hit Enter key once again.

Let the System File Checker run, it will take awhile, then it will NOT give any messages...either it works, or it doesnt.

For other than XP, win2000, etc:

The IE Repair utility is available if you have upgraded Internet Explorer from the original installed version> take a look in Add/Remove Programs, and if you see this:

Microsoft Internet Explorer (someversion) and Internet Tools, just hit Add/Remove> we arent uninstalling anything, you will see 3 options then> hit "Repair this version of IE" and let the utility run to completion. You will see a message that tells you either it fixed something, or that you need to reinstall IE.

There are certain steps to reinstalling depending on what your version of Windows is> and if you have XP with SP2 or not.

Let us know what happens.

[Not sure question in right Forum.] Problem is with Win95 and when I right clik on something in My Computer to bring up Explore menu option, and then left clik on left side of window to display contents to the right, I am not able to get the right pane with the contents listed as always have.
Nothing comes up. I dragged the window from the right but the right pane was not hidden there. I get info in the bar above Start bar showing how many Objects and how much disk space is used and free. I've Re-started computer a couple of times to no avail. Never had this problem before.

I'm not sure what to do here...

After downloading Explorer 8 (and updating Windows) I am unable to type in any field below the top pane. (I can type text just fine in my google search field and the url field)

I un-installed Explorer 8 (which re-installed Explorer 7) with no improvement.

I noticed that after completing the Windows update (I have Service Pack 3) my Anti Virus (Zone Alarm) had been blown away. I had to re-install it. I've since learned that I should disable anti-virus software prior to doing Windows updates.

Is this a virus?

I do not have a folder pane (a folder tree with the Desktop, my Computer, the Network) in Explorer any more.
This is a rather annoiing and difficult problem, and have searched several times for hour with NO solution for Vista.

I do not know exactly when this started, since I'm not normally using Windows Explorer that much. Now when I open the Explorer, the place where the Folder pane should be is totally blank, as seen below. (My Layout is set to "Navigation Pane")

I can see contents of folders in the Right pane and navigate through them, but can't see any folder hierarchy in the Left Folder-pane -- it's just totally blank as shown above.

Does anyone have a solution? I'd rather not re-install Vista...

PS: The problem seemed to exists in W9x and ME too Windows Explorer-Left Pane Empty - Tech Support Guy Forums and has a fix from MS, to delete a part of the registry, but this does not work for Vista.

Thanks a lot in Advance,

PS: I've read Brink's information on resetting Folder View settings and tried this to, but it did not help.

I had a look at your problem just after you posted eary this morning. Was not sure that i understood what is going on.Thought you had got your Windows Explorer.exe confused with internet explorer.exe.I also considered you had poss a bad update of IE5 as it appears to only have one choice in the add/remove programs for it.Considered at some stage you may have had a virus, but you don't mention anything about a virus scan or any error messages.I would suggest that your problem is wide spread through-out your pc and i think you have issues with your registry and corrupt files within the windows installation."I could also be very wrong" You could go for a quick re-install of windows 98 over itself and see if that cures the problem. It may give you a chance to keep all software programs that are installed and running properly,if that be the case.If it was me, i would not hesitate to reformat and do a repeat clean install of windows.Unless someone can come up with a better idea.

Does that mean that SOME other pictures are not blocked?

I think personally that it is a real explorer bug.
The explorer is depending from too many applications (ie, windows mail applications, etc...). Some people having the same problem solved it through Outlook???? So maybe some registry keys are shared for this particular case.
I remember having a lot of problems of this type in XP, that is why i decided not to use anymore the explorer which i substitute with freecommander.

i currently can not access the available Wi-Fi networks menu. when i attempt to open the available networks pane from either the taskbar, or the settings charm, explorer restarts. i receive no error. I think the problem originated a couple of days ago. on that day, i logged on and the resolution was wrong; Windows had just completed installing an update. since then, i've reinstalled the graphic, network, and audio drivers. i've also uninstalled the latest Windows updates, as well as try and use system restore to go back about a month. no results. the only thing telling is i get an error in safe mode that says "The instruction at 0x389fac1c referenced memory at 0x0000000. The memory could not be written." i recieve this error when i attempt to open the Network connections menu from the taskbar like usual.

does anybody have any suggestions on how to fix this? i'm getting awful tired of re-installing Windows 8 over stupid crap. thanks.

You might want to consider updating to 8.1 update1.

Or run this batch file which runs sfc & dism commands.
It might take 2 hours or so to finish.
Then reboot.

After downloading it right click it & click Properties & Unblock it if necessary.
It might help fix things.

I've tried everything but Homegroup keeps rearing it's ugly head in Explorer's nav pane.
I went in to Change PC settings and Network and Homegroup, but since a Homegroup doesn't exist there is no Leave Homegroup option.
I even did a registry tweek to remove it and double checked the Attributes setting and it is correct to hide Homegroup.

I restored a clean image, like I do ever so often, and after the initial restore Home Group is hidden.
But, after installing some Windows updates it show back up again.

Any ideas what is going on.
I don't want, don't need, and don't want to have anything to do with Homegroup.

Answer:Unable to FRemove Homegroup From Explorer Nav Pane

Since you don't have homegroup setup, therefore no option to leave the home group.
Open Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Services
Then stop 2 services if they are running: HomeGroup Listener, HomeGroup Provider then double click on each and disable.

Homegroup should disappear from Nav Pane.

I'll use the explorer preview pane regularly. I have multiple installs of windows 10 on different machines. On one in particular, I cannot get the preview image to resize/scale up when I drag the preview pane to be bigger. The default space it takes is fairly narrow, which is fine if you just want a rough idea. However, sometimes, I need to see the preview image in a bigger size. In most other installs, the default behavior is that dragging the preview pane border to the left makes the pane itself bigger, and the image being displayed inside scales up to fit the space (in almost all cases. Some exceptions). On this particular install, no matter what the size of the preview pane, the source image remains the same size. I can have the preview pane taking up 3/4 of the explorer window, and the preview image will still be the tiny size it was at default. I've seen this on other installs before, but in those cases, it was (oddly) only jpeg images that had this issue. Other formats resized. This has persisted across multiple builds of win 10, so not just a bug in the build (another machine with the same build doesn't have the issue). In fact, I just had the latest build update. Any ideas out there? It's particularly important to me because I have ridiculous amounts of images where there may be what appears to be an identical shot 20+ times at a glance, but with important differences I could tell them apart with if the preview was bigger.

Answer:Explorer Preview pane image will not resize

Here is a screen shot of what I mean. If I drag the preview pane as far right as possible to minimum size, that preview image will be basically exactly the same size

I'm a 5 day Win 8 new-bee leaning new stuff every day.
The latest thing to have me stumped is the Navigation Pane in explorer.
I don't want them all to look the same. I have folders on my desktop, in which all I want to see is the short cuts to apps. I went into View/Navigation Pane, and deselected Navigation Pane. I got the look I wanted, but it applied to all folders that I opened. Whenever I click on Windows Explorer, the Navigation pane was missing. If I restored it, it again applied to all folders. I am NOT clicking on Apply to All Folders in View/Options. So why can't I get what I want?

Answer:Windows Explorer Navigation Pane - What am I doing wrong?

Hello Jeff, and welcome to Eight Forums.

In File Explorer (renamed Windows Explorer), the navigation pane turn on or off setting is a universal setting for all folders and libraries windows. It can't be turned on or off for some and not others.

It was this way in Vista and Windows 7 as well.

Hello everyone,

My fiance just got her first Windows 10 laptop recently, and the behaviour of Explorer is driving her nuts. The navigation pane on the left will not scroll horizontally (neither with a horizontal scrollbar nor auto-scrolling as it did in previous versions of Windows), or at least we can't find the right option to enable either:

This is pretty unusable as it is, so I'm hoping that someone can suggest something. She will switch to an alternate file manager (we've seen recommendations for Classic Shell and xplorer2) if necessary, but would prefer to stick with the Windows 10 file explorer if possible.

Thanks to everyone!

Answer:How to get horiz scrolling in Navigation Pane in Win 10 Explorer

linuxgarou said:

Welcome to TenForums @linuxgarou

One suggestion would be to hover the mouse over the dividing line between the navigation pane and the list of files (it's the right-hand edge of the navigation pane's vertical scroll bar). When the pointer becomes a double-headed arrow you can click-and-drag to make the navigation pane wider.

I have mine set to about twice the width of the one in your screenshot.

Edit: and so apparently does Ztrucker in the following post.

Maybe this has been discussed before, but I'm noticing that the navigation pane in Windows Explorer doesn't automatically scroll left and right anymore in the latest builds. Nor is there a horizontal scroll bar on that pane, like there was on XP. So if you have folders that are nested more than four or five deep, the only way to see the deeper levels is to drag that pane wider.

This is happening in both 7048 and 7057. Are others seeing this? Is this a bug or are they changing the way horizontal scrolling works and it's just not finished?

Answer:Windows Explorer Navigation Pane Autoscroll

I couldn't say about the navigation pane as I always disable all the extra windows options for the explorer windows. As for the horizontal scroll - if I understand you correctly, that is still there but you have to scale the window horizontally until there is less than one tiles worth of space. Otherwise the icons just auto tile themselves.

Hello SevenForums, I am having a particularly annoying problem with my favorites shortcuts in my navigation pane. I have no idea what I actually did but I know I accidentally altered the "Links" file in C:/(Users)/(MyUser)/Links. Ever since then my "Favorites" shortcuts in the navigation pane are completely empty. I cannot add new links either.

I have tried everything from the simple "restore favorite links" option to manually editing the registry value to be sure in included the "IsShortcut" entry. I have tried the techniques from several different threads on this very website. I have tried every single option from each one of these tutorials:

Favorites Empty in Navigation Pane - Fix
Favorites - Restore Default Favorite Links in Navigation Pane
User Folders - Restore Default Location
Default File Type Associations - Restore

Nothing has fixed the problem.

In addition to this all the sections in the navigation pane that used to independent (IE - Libraries, Computer, Network, ETC) are all now contained under the "Desktop" category. This is a recent issue and not nearly as maddening as the favorites issue I described above.

So priority one for me is to fix the favorites links. If anyone can shed some light on the situation I would greatly appreciate it.

Answer:Windows Explorer Navigation Pane Problems

Hello brewersomething, and welcome to Seven Forums.

All of your default Favorites are there in the right pane when you have Favorites selected. It appears that you need to expand open Favorites in the navigation pane by clicking on the small white outlined triangle just to the left of Favorites.

It looks like you have your navigation pane set to "show all folders". Unchecking this option using the method in the tutorial below will have your navigation pane show in separate groups again.

Navigation Pane - Show All Folders

Hope this helps for now,

When opening Excel files off our DFS while having Windows Explorer Preview Pane enabled our users will get the "open in read-only" notification about 60% of the time. This forces them to open the file in read-only mode...or close out, cross
their fingers, and try opening again.
I applied the reg keys listed in this support article, rebooted the Win7 Pro x64 test client, and we still get the File Lock notices when the preview pane is enabled. Anybody else figure out a solid solution for this
issue besides disabling the preview pane?

Answer:Explorer Preview Pane causes File Lock

Thanks for the link Alex. The client is Win7 SP1 and I've tried adding the OpLock registry keys and rebooting but no change. At the moment we're not pushing out Office patches so I may run a full update for grins.

I noticed one of the suggestions in the technet post you provided is to disable the preview pane - which is allowing the file open process to run as expected for us. Luckily there are very few people that have explorer setup with preview
pane so there's only been one report so far.

Good day to all,

I'm trying to fix a small annoyance of mine with Windows Explorer. I would like the "Computer" to be permanently expanded. Here are some images that will clarify what I am trying to accomplish. The 1st image is what my navigation pane currently looks like, the 2nd is what I would like for it to look like

I would also like to remove certain items in the Navigation pane that I don't use such as "Network" and/or "Control Panel" if possible. I have tried a program that was suggested in another post which was suggested by the user mickey megabyte and can be found [URL="[/URL] . However sadly, this program did not remove any of these unwanted items.

I wasn't certain which forum to post this question in so I went with General Discussion. As per my usual etiquette, if anyone can help me reach a solution I will update my post with a clear guideline on how to fix the problem so that future users won't have to ask the same question.

What my plan is, is to remove Desktop from the Navigation Pane maybe using a Registry Hack but I think if it did, it would remove the others too since they expand from Desktop. I never use Desktop from Navigation Pane and just find it to be a nuisance to always have it collapsed and just remove it instead. Is there any method of doing this please?

Example below:

I have already removed Favourites and if I can get Desktop to be removed I will remove the Homegroup and Network from that too using Brink's already made Tutorials.

If I expand a folder that's down towards the bottom and there's a lot of subfolders, then everything moves up to make room for the subfolder list. That's as it should be. But about the time I go to click on one of the subfolders, the whole list moves down again and you have to scroll back down to get where you want. After that, it stays put. It's an bug/annoyance that I hope someone gets fixed.
Just my 2 cents worth.

Does anyone know how to edit the details that appear at the bottom of the screen when you select a file? I'm not talking about the details that you can change when you select view but the one at the very bottom of the screen.
Thank you

Hi all,
This might be a really dumb question, but in Windows 7 (Home Premium, no 3rd-party modifications), is there an easy way to get the tree pane on the left of an Explorer window to update to the current folder location?

For instance, if I navigate through folders using the folder icons on the right and the address bar at the top, the tree pane on the left still only shows the roots of each of the system's drives. How can I get the tree pane to expand to show my current location, without having to drill down through the tree manually, one level at a time?

Thanks for any help.

Answer:Getting tree pane in Explorer to update automatically?

it's quite simple, fortunately.

hit the 'Alt' button in windows explorer, this will make a menu bar appear - then press tools >> folder options

now tick the bottom box

I am wanting to to the folders into links like in XP so that by clicking the name of the folder it will expand. Windows 7 seems to have gone to a little triangle symbol next to the name for this purpose, but it is annoying spending time trying to hit that small symbol. Is there any way to make the listings into links? Thanks.

I just reformated my hard drive and reloaded XP Home. The problem I'm having, is that when I open Windows Explorer, (not Internet Explorer) the left pane (tree) does not cascade automatic to show all the folders. It just shows Documents, My Computer and the + sign beside each one to expand to the folders. It used to do this automatically in the past. I've tried all the view options on the tool bars, all property settings and nothing works. I'm running active desktop like I always do. Any ideas?

Thanks, Steve

Is there a way to add 'Download' folder located in the user profile folder to the explorer pane without using 'Favorites'?

Answer:Adding 'Downloads' folder to explorer pane.

Hello Asdf123,

That's what the Favorites folder is for, but I suppose that you could create and use a Download Library instead to accomplish this. Other than this, it's already added to at the C:\Users\(user-name)\Downloads location, but you have to open and expand your way down to that location under the Computer group in the navigation pane.

Hope this helps,

Yes this has been answered before (in 2001, I think) but the solution as provided via Rollin' Rog:

@="Explorer Band"

failed to work. Maybe because IE is version 6?

The symptoms are the same - blank, b'ground-coloured left pane. The above was entered (I also tried 'shdocvw.dll' but no dice.

Any further possible solutions, please?

I have just installed Windows 2000 server on a Dell Poweredge 2450, when entering windows explorer the lft pane is grayed out. I am running IE6 and have removed all security patches for windows to no avail.

Please Help !

Answer:[Resolved] Windows Explorer pane grayed out

Welcome to TSG, tthulen.

Run regedit and navigate to the following key:

With that key highlighted, click File (or Registry) > Export, name and save the key to the desktop.

With the .reg file on the desktop, Right click on it and rename it with a .txt extension

Now upload it here as an attachement so we can see what is there. There is a possible fix for this, but it may vary somewhat in Win2k

In the navigation pane on the left, win explorer shows only actual folders, not aliases to folders. How can I make it show an alias as well?

I noticed some threads on the same issue on 98 and me systems.

In the Windows Explorer Window the left pane is blank (gray, only the little cross to close the pane) when the folder view is selected. The search and history folder do work though.

Is there someone who can help me please?

Happy 2003,

We have a Dell desktop that has Windows 2000. When we open My Computer or Windows Explorer it is blank besides a small box with a dot in the upper left corner. I have switched views and it still is blank. The All folders pane shows the folder in Explorer. There are a couple of folder that can be selected and they will display file in the left pane but most will not. I need help. Thanks!
