Preferred Solution: Error 0x00000005 Access is denied for printer using admin account.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

So I've been recently having issues with permissions or something related to it. I first noticed it when I would always get this security prompt when attempting to open a shortcut to Teamspeak 3. Now I'm just trying to install a program and it's saying that I don't have rights to the /Local/Temp/ folder!

Obviously the first thing I checked what whether or not my account was still an administrator:

Check!

Then I made sure UAC was turned off:

Check!

Then I went ahead and attempted to give myself Full Access permissions to the entire C:\ drive:

Then I get these Access Denied errors using this process and I have no idea why!

Which also says the same thing about Program Files.

(It did allow me to take ownership of the drive(s) though).

Of course I attempted to Google the issue and tried many methods including several from these forums:
Error applying security!!!!!!!!
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials...rmissions.html

I don't know what else to try thus why I'm here!
Thanks

Answer:Error 5: Access Denied while using Admin account

I was able to resolve the File Security prompt for opening shortcuts (i.e. Teamspeak 3) by enabling 'Launching applications and unsafe files' in Internet Options. BUT I'm still getting the permissions error and cannot give myself full access!

I've also noticed that there are about three updates that I cannot install. I'm sure this has to do with my permissions issue as well. If any of you are wondering my OS is installed on my primary SSD (C:\) which is one of the drives I'm trying to alter. The other drives seemed to work fairly OK with a few minor issues.

Hi

Ive stumbled across a problem that has been causing me grief for a few days now, every time I try to access my hard drive (C disk) it says, access is denied. Also, i cant edit permissions because I've lost admin rights. Ive tried many things including unlocking the system admin, this lets me access a few extra things like being able to use the sfc command in cmd, however, it doesn't allow me to access the C disk or change permission because it also has lost admin rights? I fear that this is a bad problem and I don't know how it happened. I have tried restoring to a previous date and that doesn't work either.

Any help and/or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Shimin4tor

I've got an XP Home machine with 4 user accounts on it, plus the built-in Administrator account under Safe Mode. Accounts "1A" and "2A" are Admin accounts.Accounts "3L" and "4L" are Limited Users. When logged in as "1A", I can access folders on accounts "2A", "3L" and "4L", as expected. When logged in as "2A", I can access folders on accounts "3L" and "4L", but I get an Access Denied message if I try to access folders owned by the "1A" account. When logged in as the Safe Mode Admin, I can access accounts "2A", "3L" and "4L", but I'm Denied Access to account "1A".What could be wrong(?) with the "1A" account such that no other Admin account can access it?TIA

Answer:Admin Account are Denied Access

From what I can guess, 1A's account has had it's folders protected so that only 1A can access them, whereas all of the other accounts do not have this protection and can be accessed by both of the admin accounts. To allow other accounts access to A1's documents, log in as A1, go to the documents that you want others to access (such as my documents in C:\Documents and settings.Right click on the folder, select sharing and security. From the options, untick the box "Make this folder private".This should make the folder avalible to all of the other users.Hope that this is what you are looking for!

Omg my comp is so screwy.
First thing I noticed was that my help and support didn't work, but i managed to reinstall some dll's and fixed it. My system restore doesn't work. It just says windows can not find <link tree> please type in name correctly and try again.

I could not fix that one.
Then I changed my SID with a SID generator to use a program. Then after that, my sister can not access her files in her account ne more. It just said access denied as soon as she logs in. Only recycle bin is on the desktop. Wallpaper reverted to original. All her icons on desktop is gone. I tried accessing her account through my own, whcih has full admin priviledges, but i got denied. (btw, i also get denied looking at d and e drives sometimes)
I tried making a new admin account but that one couldnt access my sisters account also. Then I read somewhere I should go into safe mode and make a new admin account. But when I tried, I couldnt even load into safe mode!!!

My comp loaded a bunch of what I assumed to be files or processes or sumthing, and then restarted, saying it failed to load. So now I had to load in normal mode and create an account here and type all this...

HELP ME I AM CRYING!!!!

Hello, I have encountered a rather odd problem that didn't turn up in forum search.

System: Win7 Home Premium 32-bit, fresh install+updates (with AVG 2012 Free and Google Chrome as only other installs)

I have (had) 2 users both with admin rights. One was my 'main' user that I was using just to learn Win7 and surf a l'il. The other was completely new: Created, logged into, back off, then not touched again. For the first few days, had no problems and was really liking Win7. However, today after logging off main user (I had just run a full clean scan with AVG, btw) and switching to the fresh one, IMMEDIATELY after entering my log-in password, I received a UAC prompt telling me that this user does not have access to this folder. The background was replaced with a black screen, the taskbar icons were replaced with the standard "new file" icon and did not function (no surprise there.) I opened Windows Explorer using "Start > Computer" and again was immediately told I had no access. Gave myself permission and attempted to investigate. I could not view/open any folder without giving myself permission first.

Having no success determining the problem, I decided to simply log off and delete this account. Performed a full delete (folders and all.) Then, I created a new account with admin rights. Logged into it without incident. Logged back onto main user and opened Windows Explorer. The user folder from the original 2nd account remained and ... Read more

Answer:Account(admin rights) denied all access IMMEDIATELY upon log-in

Does Safe Mode function normally?
That is to say if you boot in safe mode are you able to perform basic functions and use the system to some extent?

If this is not a registry or av/security related problem the easiest fix would likely be SFC
SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Some more specific detail of the nature of the problem and less of what you have done may be of assistance too.
If this is a problem with admin priveldges you are honestly probably better off doing a repair install
Repair Install
Than digging around trying to find the one setting responsible for the problem.
Component services and other various admin tools can get down right annoying to work with and can cause further problems if the least bit thing is set wrong.

I am running on windows 10 and recently upgraded from windows 7. After having alot of problems with my files being read-only after the upgrade I decided to look at the security permissions and somehow accidentally removed myself as an owner to C:\ (I am the admin user) Clicking on C:\ results in access denied, going into advanced properties of the drive and trying to change any security setting results in the window freezing up for a while then saying access denied, no editor control.
I have tried going through command prompt in safe mode and entering NET USER Administrator /active:yes, NET STOP ProfSvc, access is still denied even in the command prompt on the new administrator user.
I have no idea what to do anymore, I've searched the internet for solutions and found nothing.

When I try to install a new printer driver, or change an existing driver, I'm getting "Cannot install Printer.  Access is denied".  There is no GPO applied to this machine, it's a member of a workgroup.  The Package Point and Print
GPO setting was set to disabled just in case.
The user in question is part of the Administrators group, but just to be safe, I logged on as administrator and got the same message.

Hi there,
Storage pool with two storage spaces created using Windows 8 Release Preview and then ported into Windows 8 RTM. I'm now trying to delete one of the storages spaces and getting this access is denied error message.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Answer:Unable to delete Storage Space "Access is Denied" 0x00000005

I solved the problem for me.
Again... No file lock on the storage pool and no application is doing anything with this virtual disk. But it's not possible to remove it from storage spaces. This has nothing to do with ownership of the drive, access rights or an access of a process. I
had a clean windows setup with no programs installed. I'd say that this is a bug of windows!

Anyway here is my solution:
* Opened an explorer with "Computer" open.
* Opened "computer managment" and selected the storage list.
* I selected the storage pool which I wanted to delete but wasn't able to.
* Right click -> format... I think I have chosen NTFS but it's not so important...
* Warning that the drive is in use (what a nonsense) -> yes yes ok
* waited a few seconds until the bar with the free space disappeared at the "Computer" folder for this drive (on the explorer).
* stopped the format process. some error msgs that this couldn't be canceled and then he said he couldn't finish... (wtf ;))
* then back to the storage spaces overview... manage storage spaces... delete storage pool... pool disappeared... finish

hope this helps someone

I'm trying to transfer the data from my administrator user account (C:\Documents and Settings\Owner) to a new administrator user account (C:\Documents and Settings\Erick). But, when I try to paste the data from the Owner folder to the Erick folder, I get an access-denied error for some folders during the transfer process. I tried using the XP Home Safe Mode Administrator account to perform this task, but same result. How do I complete the data-transfer process?

Most, if not all of the time, I'm logged into Win7 as a standard user. If I need to run a program as a Admin, I right click on the program and choose "run as administrator". I'm not getting prompt for the password, which is denying programs from installing even after rebooting.

Answer:Denied Admin Account Pass ?

Try the RUNAS cmd.

Eg.

Code:
c:\windows\system32\notepad.exe RUNAS /user:AdminAccount
Make sure you replace AdminAccount with the correct administrator account name.
You will be prompted for a password, so type it in and press Enter.

Hello All,
I'm delighted to have found you and after a long day of trying to help myself i am now requiring your much appreciated assistance please! I'm not a techy person at all and am hoping someone can help
Last week my husband purchased a new hp laptop which came with Windows 10
On setup i used my microsoft account to login with a pin, the account was setup as administrator (thinking i could change things later)
About 2 days later i added a standard user account for my husband with a microsoft account login with pin.
I wanted to make his the administrator account but thought i had better change mine to a standard account first! My mistake!!
Now i cannot change anything! i have tried to use the cmd prompt to run as administrator - it asks for administrator permission and does not allow me to enter a password or yes!
I have tried all suggestions to enable the hidden windows 10 account but all ask for the same permission.
I have tried to go to setup, recovery, troubleshoot, advanced option, system restore - it requests an administrator password and when i entered what i thought is mine it does not work! Feeling a little
Does anybody know anyway i can go back in time to start again or how do i access administrator rights as i really need to add programs etc
Thank you for any help given

I got the laptop as a gift, and one Account was set up as Admin and Local. There is no other account.

Today, I had to print a pdf file, and the computer wouldn't recognize the printer (HP 1102). It had previously set up the driver for the printer itself. Since I had a backup file of Printer driver on my laptop, I tried to use uninstall.exe file to uninstall the driver, and then reinstall it. However Windows doesn't allow the exe file to run with the message that it is a potentially dangerous file, and I need Admin access. That's when I noticed that Admin and Local are same. I don't much fiddle with these settings and am unaware of how to set these up. So I read a few threads here on MG. But I don't get the hang of how I separate the Admin and Local Accounts. I don't want to end up with two local accounts.

Also, while using Printer trouble shooter, I got a message saying I had a USB 3.0 and I needed 2.0. But yesterday I printed without any problems. So how do I resolve these two issues that seem interrelated at one level, and yet are different.

Answer:Local Account And Admin Account Same On Win10/ Hp Printer

Go to USER ACCOUNTS and investigate what is there. Presumably you do know the password for the Admin acc.

NB: Ignore that USB warning, USB 3 are back compatible with USB 2 sockets. But all laptops sold now usually have both USB 3 and USB 2 sockets.
If you look at the EXACT Laptop model specs on the manufacturer website it will tell you.

Hello All,

I just recently experienced a google chrome phenomena whereas the admin account could not change browser settings (greyed out)  because the browser would not connect because of some proxy/lan setting, but a newly established guest account could browse at will and change browser lan settings etc.

The puzzling variable came when i used IE on the admin account and it did the same thing. yet the guest account was connecting.

an AVG scan revealed nothing and a privoxy "starthelp.exe" popup started showing up recently asking for a click to initialize.

Is this a sign of an infection? are there any countermeasures establsihed for this ? I will browse BC and search the keywords while this topic is further analyzed.

The user is about to throw in the towel and aspire for a $___ OS install. So I wanted to check to see if that can be avoided.

I have been setting up my new PC for a few days, but I am running into all sorts of folders that I do not have access to (I am the dmin, only on other user). I can't get into My Pictures, I can't get into the User Accounts folders to find my Outlook folder, etc. Can I turn that off?

Answer:I am the Admin and my access is denied

Hello NootDoot,

I to ran into the same problem with Win7/64-Bit system I bought two months ago.
I turned off the UAC (security section in Control Panel) then you have to reboot. However, it is for your safety. Please investigate what clearances you have set, i.e., who can access what? I turned mine back on after making sure I had all rights. This too is confusing, took me a while. Use the Help section for Security and get your answers there.

I am sure very experienced members of this forum will be posting advice shortly as well.

Hey guys, here's the deal.
I upgraded my OS a few months ago to 64 bit with new components etc.
I kept all of the old system files and folders JUST for if it went wrong, now ive sorted them all out, the old system files, and adobe is locked for some reason? I keep trying to change all of the administration but it just jumps straight back to before, but hey, im in no hurry to change it, its only 15gb of useless copies! Its just niggling at me and i would like to get it sorted if theres any other way?
ie changing the admin account so i can change - everything-, as I'm not exactly new with computers, been studying them for years.

Thanks a lot for the assistance in advance guys Looking forward to some suggestions!

- Also, a little off topic if anyones got enough time to add some wisdom to the thread, ive just bought a super duper cooler for my CPU as when i run on normal settings on a game I play, LotrO, the manufacturers fan goes mad, and it really gets my goat making a loud whirring sound, would I be able to run on High-Ultra with a duel core amd athlon 2? with that fan I have "Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro Socket 775 CPU Cooler" it wouldnt make any sound as its made for being quiet and cool very well. i suppose the only sign of the strain is artifacts in-game? Thanks again

Answer:Access Denied on Admin Login?

You should right-click the folder, go to properties, click the Security tab, click the Advanced button, click the Owner tab, and then click the edit button. Select your account from the list, click to check the box labeled "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects", and then click the OK button to apply permissions. Exit out of the properties dialog, and (unless you also need to add yourself full control to the permissions on the properties / security tab) you should now be able to delete the folder.

I am assuming you run xp

This article describes how to take ownership of a file or a folder where you have been denied access.

Note You must be logged on to the computer with an account that has administrative credentials. If you are running Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, you must start the computer in safe mode, and then log on with an account that has Administrative rights to have access to the Security tab.

I'd give either cacls or Icacls a try. Just make sure you open the command prompt as an administrator.

Running windows 7 and attempted to change startup through msconfig and received an access denied you are not a security admin message , but I am a security admin

Answer:access denied - not a security admin

Try going into Cotnrol Panel > User Account > Change User Account Control settings and set the slider to the top. This should reset UAC so that everything requiring UAC to act normally.

ADMIN access denied ACL not cooperative

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Running XP Media Center W/ SP2 ver:2002

Unable to copy a specific file to another computer or to another folder within the same computer.

File attrbutes do not indicate read-only or hidden.

Encryption details show one of my old usernames for transparant access.
When I try to add the ADMINISTRATOR for transparant access the FIND USER button is greyed out.
System has been locking up on me and have determined malware is not a player. Decided to go ahead and reformat. Currently backing up files to keep prior to format but a few are giving me a problem.

So I can copy a few files.

Logged in as ADMINISTRATOR and get ACCESS IS DENIED. I can DELETE but not COPY. I can move it to another folder on my computer but still cannot copy or move to another computer afterwards.

Tried cacls xxxxx /F and did nothing

Tried modifying ACL.

ADMINISTRATOR has:
---full control permissions
---effective permissions are all checked
---changed owner to ADMINISTRATOR

Still no go.

What are my options here?

Thanks

Hello,

I posted this on Answers.microsoft but was told that this issue is a bit more complex than usual so.. here it goes.

I'm having an issue where I can't access my regular account which has full admin rights. At first I was having an issue where I could access this account but I didn't have access to C drive. I went to the forums and followed the Net User Administrator/Active:yes instructions... the Admin emerged but then it asked for a password, I tried my regular account password and nothing. Then I tried to log back into my regular account with my password and it's not working anymore. I can't log into safe mode or anything. I get some message that says "Windows cannot connect to SENS network."? I only have access to guest account which has little control. What do I do? I really need help, if there is anyone who can help I'd appreciate it.

Q.

P.S. I'm really trying to avoid a complete system restore/repair because all my school work is in that account and I'll be screwed.

Answer:Admin access denied: Complex

Flush your DNS cache and restore MS's Hosts file.

Copy and paste these lines in Note pad.
@Echo on
pushd\windows\system32\drivers\etc
attrib -h -s -r hosts
echo 127.0.0.1 localhost>HOSTS
attrib +r +h +s hosts
popd
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns
netsh winsock reset all
netsh int ip reset all
shutdown -r -t 1
del %0

Save as flush.bat to your desktop. Right click to run as Administrator. Your computer will reboot itself.

Next, download DDS from one of these links:
Mirror 1 Mirror 2 Mirror 3
Disable any script blocking protection Double click the dds icon to run the tool. When done, DDS will open two (2) logs: DDS.txt Attach.txt <--this will be minimized in the task traySave both reports to your desktop.
Include the contents of both logs in your next reply.

Hi There

I am trying to troubleshoot a windows 8 Sony Vaio laptop.
I am not sure exactly what has happened but I cannot run anything on it.

For example when I open My Computer and the C:\ I get "C:\ is not Accessible access denied"
I can open cmd prompt but if I try to run as administrator I get and error saying cannot access.
The same for any admin program, compmgmt, MMC, msconfig. but it says windows cannot access this file. I cant event run Task manager. and cant check event viewer or anything.

I have tired a automatic repair, but it Diagnosis the PC but returns that it cant be repaired.
I also tried Repair and the same occurs.
I also tried give administrators ownership of the C:\ as it says "Unable to display current owner" but this will not allow ownership to change on pagefile.sys, hiberfil.sys and swapfile.sys. along with a mcafee install.

I think it is the ownership error that is causing this but cant seem to solve

Can anyone assist? I am pulling my hair out.

Thanks

Answer:Cannot run any Admin programs, Access Denied on C:\

I don't have a solution but I found a page with similar issues that may shed some light:
https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/d14731ec-4f0e-4ef8-9aac-028dd7104e0e/file-permissions-in-windows-7-take-ownership-reports-success-but-i-cant-access-my-files?forum=w7itprosecurity

Edit: By the way, it is noted on the utility that takes ownership via a Context Menu command, not to take ownership of C: in its entirety. You can do things like take ownership of C:\Program Files folder, if you are the only user on the system. But taking ownership of the entire C:\ partition causes problems.

I am trying to change my user account from guest to admin as many things aren't working right. I have tried cmd -> netplwiz and it asks me for an admin password, but gives me no box to type it in. Hello, when I go to install any device driver, I receive an "Access Denied" failure message. I checked the permissions on the source files and the existing files being replaced, and I have full control (logged in as local admin). I then removed it from its
OU(<ou#1>) and restarted to see if it was the group policy, and I was able to install the same source driver files. I did a gpresult on <ou#1> and looked through the group policy being applied, but could not find anything related to driver installation.
I'll gladly upload/share the group policy to be looked at, but I can't seem to post it with this message.
After putting it back in <ou#1>, I found that the driver store files at C:\windows\system32\driverstore\*.dat only had permissions for SYSTEM(but the admin group owned the files). Using SubInAcl, I added full control to these files for the admin group,
which then allowed me to install/update drivers. But when I restart the computer, the permissions for those 5 driver store files are reset back to SYSTEM=full control, owner=admin group.
How can I stop the permissions from being reset on these 5 files when the system is restarted? *Note that this is in an Enterprise environment

Answer:Access denied installing drivers as Admin

Hey, I just wanted to say thanks for the very relevant help, but I've figured out the problem. After sifting through my group policy, I found that it was the point and print restrictions in the group policy that was preventing me from installing
drivers.

Win 10 Problems
I?m having Constant Access is denied (and related problems?.
I have googled/searched a Lot for this problem, and find most solutions suggest use ?Run as Administrator? or change(manhandle ACL/premissions). Yes this sometimes provides a work around, but leads to an ultimately UnManagable nightmare ( and an Unreliable machine)!

I need (and have tried) to set up a workstation with following:
Win10 Pro x64, Office 2016 pro+, IIS, Sql Server 2016 and multiple versions or Visual Studio.
My Win 7 machines carry this basic Ms developer machine load Perfectly!!!
But I can?t get Win 10 Pro to even get started to run these products successfully?
( I have all these products, legally, and can/do clean load and install them repetitively until I either get it right or positively prove Win 10 is a Bust! So far it aint goin well?

So far I can get good clean installs of Win 10 pro & seen/active the LAN .

So I've been trying to modify my hosts file for a while now. On and off because I was fed up with searching and trying different things then always ending up failing.
So that is why I am posting on this forum, asking for help from you guys.

So far I have tried:
Unchecking Read-Only for the file and the 'etc' folder
Opening Notepad as administrator
Taking ownership
Activating the 'Hidden Admin Account'
Made sure I had all the right permissions for the file (right click 'hosts', properties, security, etc.)

I might or might not have forgotten something. Also, there is only one account on my laptop and it is me. And I am the admin.

Thank your for reading.

Answer:Hosts: always Access Denied or asking for Admin permissions

I was able to do it through notepad running as an administrator... What happened when you tried? Can you upload a screenshot?

Hi.

I am running windows 7 ultimate and I have only one account (admin).
I have no trouble installing programs, running programs or copying files from different locations on my hard drive, but if I try to save a file in a program, I get the message, that I do not have permission to save in that location and that I have to contact the administrator to get permisson - but am I not the administrator?

E.g. I tried to save a document from word, but couldn't - I could only save it in my Documents folder... In some locations I got the message, that the client didn't have the neccesary rights to save the file in that location (I'm using danish language pack, so one of the pictures might not make much sense, but I've attached both messages anyway - the danish message says: C:\test.docx
The client is missing a neccesary right.)

I haven't had this problem all the time since I installed windows 7 ultimate, as far as I recall, so might be an update or something that is causing the problem, I don't know.

I have read some threads concerning admin rights, but haven't found anything that got rid of the problem, so hope someone can help me.. It is very frustrating not being able to save documents etc...

I upgraded to Windows 10, and now any time I create a new doc, new excel sheet, try to scan something in to folders I have spent moths setting up and organizing - all tell me "access denied", contact system Admin?

WTF... I am the sys admin, it's my freaking laptop...

Sorry, I have NO idea where to post this?

Hello, I am helping with some network printer issues at my school and we have been unable to resolve an access denied error with our printer.

The computers that have the issue are running windows 7 and all the computers on campus use a special print manager system that tracks the number of pages printed by each user. This print manager is maintained on a Windows Server 2003 OS.

Every student who logs in does so through their own unique account, these accounts are not able to print using the printer in the lab if it is set-up through the print manager. If the printer is setup directly, there are no issues, however we are unable to keep track of how much people print (we need to be able to do this). The status of the printer in the "devices and printers" folder says "Access Denied."

If we log in via the administrator account, we can print off the printer regardless of whether or not it is setup through print manager.

Things we have tried (in no particular order):
1. Using a new printer with updated drivers.
2. Re-installing the printer.
3. Checking driver authentication (passed).
4. Possibly a few other things that other techs have done, I would need to check with them later for the details.

If anyone has any possible solutions or knows of any major software incompatibilities, I would greatly appreciate your assistance with this issue.

Hello!
I've a card printer with a usb card programmer.
When I'm logged in as an Administrator everything works well, but when I'm logged in as a regular user the printer prints but holds the card when it comes to the programmer.

We have a GP saying that write/read access to removable disks is disabled but do you think this will also interupt with the programmer?

Anyone tried deleting a registry key in Windows 7?  Got "access denied" or "Error while deleting key"?
The usual response is, "You need to run regedit as an administrator".  but I *AM* logged in as Administrator, and running regedit as administrator, trying to assign administrator full permissions on that registry key in order to delete it!!
Am I mistaken, or isn't Administrator supposed to be able to administer and control all the settings on the computer, in order to set it up for the "Average Joe" user?
So, under the permissions menu of that key, go to advanced, change the owner from System to Administrator, and try again.  It's no longer saying "access denied", but "Cannot delete xxxxxx. Error while deleting key".

The scenario: Basically, the wireless has stopped working on a laptop. The device does not show up in Device Manager, but is in the registry, so the normal procedure is to delete the registry entry for the device in HKLM/System/CurrentControlSet (and /ControlSet001) /Enum/PCI    ,then attach the device or restart the computer, it finds the "new" hardware and reinstalls it. Easy!...

Not with permission restrictions on the administrator account it's not!  So I need to give myself permission, to give myself permission, to do a simple task like delete a single registry key!  Why, Microsoft, why???!!!  Please just make the Administrator accoun... Read more

A program I am trying to install needs access to the system32 folder and comcat.dll file, but I get an access denied error. When I initially installed Win 7 Pro 64bit, the first thing I did (before updates or any other installs) was give ownership at the root of C:\ to the administrators group (I made sure to check the option to apply the setting to subfolder and all files as well). I also made sure to give the administrators group full rights at the root level, making sure that it was applied to sub folders as well.

When the install failed due to access denied to the comcat.dll in the system32 folder, I set the permissions on that file, and on the system32 folder directly. Still, I get access denied error for this file.

I am at a loss here, all the permissions are set correctly, they look identical from the root of C:\ all the way down to the actual file. I tried installing the program as an administrator and as a user part of the administrators group. I also turned off the UAC completely, I also ran the .exe as an administrator and still I get access denied error.

One would think that since the admin group has ownership and full rights at the root level and even on the specific file, that I should have full access, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Anyone have any ideas or suggestions, please?!

Answer:Win 7 - Access denied errors, even after setting ownership and admin rights.

My Win 7 Ult C:\ is owned by TrustedInstaller. Seems changing the default ownership may not be a great idea. I would try changing the ownership back to TrustedInstaller and cascading that down if the name checks out when you try it.

Hello,
I have an external drive which I'm trying to reuse as a storage only medium. It's a usb drive on which at one point I managed to install a limited version of windows xp,to run on my first netbook (which I no longer use). I have put other stuff on the drive so I don't want to format it, but there are two files I can't get rid of.They are macromedia flash files. (ocx and exe). I tried taking ownership, running cmd adminstrator, going into safe mode with command prompt, and running admin powershell. I can see the attributes - A and R but I can't change them. I've also tried deleting them via filemenutools delete locked files, but that does not help me either. I want them gone, can anyone help me? I've read one other post where the OP had the same problem, but his problem was solved because his antivirus program eventually decided his file was a virus and got rid of it. So it is possible, but I can't find what to do. I guess it's not a big thing but it bothers me that I'm not able to remove these files no matter what I do. Help would be appreciated...

I just got a Gateway laptop with Vista Home Prem. After using the Folders options to enable seeing all the system folders, I was attempting to copy my Firefox Profiles folder in Documents and Settings from my desktop to the laptop, when I first recognized that M'soft (in their infamous propensity not to leave well-enough alone) changed the convention they used in W2k and XP.  Fine, I found out which folders to go to thanks to a thread I left at another forum.  However, to my disgust and frustration, I found that even with Admin rights, I was still being denied access to these Program Data, and User folders where those profile folders are. So, I call Gateway Support in India (don't get me started) only to find out that they want me to run a complete Restoration procedure because it was their opinion that the permissions may have become corrupted.  This, despite the fact that I just bought this machine on 4/2, and the only major change that I've made (which was within warranty) was to use Vista's partitioning utility to divy up the HDD into several other partitions to protect my data.Call me stubborn or stupid, but I refuse to take such draconian measures based on such a flimsy, and frankly illogical basis.  So, I'm posting here, and to other geeky places to get informed opinions, rather than pat, sledgehammer answers.PLEASE HEP ME,GPL

Ran into an odd issue last night that I cannot fully understand. I will keep it short, but the basic jist is: I was trying to rename a local profile to [username].old so when they logged back into the domain, it rebuilt from scratch. However, even logged in as local admin to the PC, I kept getting access denied. At one point, I was getting a NTUSER error when trying to rename.

Was trying to rename through backdoor [\\[pcname]\c$, then going to doc&settings] as well as simply going to the C drive locally, no dice.

Tried rebooting twice, still no dice. This PC is in, what my job considers, a high security sec group, so maybe the GPOs being applied to the PC as it connects to the domain is tying up the local profiles?

Answer:[SOLVED] access denied to rename local profile, logged as admin

nm, just asked a coworker. says a reboot will usually kill anything tying up the profiles, if not, he uses a tool called LockHunter to find out what is accessing the profile and kills it from there.

I was recently at my friend's business and they have a really scary scenario. First they are setup in a workgroup, not domain on XP. They share files not only through explorer but through programs like Quicken, Word, etc.

Normally there are 3 users on their businesses wireless network sharing files, such as financial data, personal information, and other extremely confidential stuff. Recently as an effect of the hurricane, they had many 'students' move into the location since they were all displaced. There are now 25 different users connected wirelessly, and they are all capable of viewing, modifying, deleting this confidential information.

I suggested encrypting the wireless network, blocking off access to the students, but they have had threats from students saying they will leave if they can't get online to do their studies. The company can't really afford that, and have already had some people reset the router physically. Still, that wouldn't solve the serious security issue here...

I thought about creating password protected folders, but for some reason I can't set that up in their XP.

I am capable of making a hidden share (after turning off simple file sharing), but whenever I mapped it on the other computers and tried to access it, I got the "Access Denied". However, regular shares such as the information we're trying to secure from everyone else opens up fine.

There must be some way to totally secure this financi... Read more

So Im using Windows 7 and I made an account for my nephew so he can use without nagging me about entering in a password. But I wanted to make it so that he cannot download anything or edit any files on the C: Drive without a admin password.

Long story Short, I changed the security settings on C: so that it will not allow anyone who is not Admin to acces any files in the C: folder. My problem is that it locked everyone (Everyone!) out of C: ... Any UAC settings or account settings cant be done. My account is an admin and anytime it try to acces anything or run anything as administrator, It says Access Denied. (BTW I never get a prompt to put in an admin password).

Ok So I went on safe mode and made it so that the Built in admin would show and I logged on it. I opened an elevated cmd and tried to change the uac settings.. but all I get is an ACESS DENIED!! I dont know what to do and I do not want to have to reset the whole computer

Also: I cannot use system restore because it says acess denied.

Answer:Access Denied! On Administrator Account?

Well of course you are locked out you are part of the same group that you changed. You broke your computer attempting to do something you do not understand. You are going have to reinstall.

Now...get this. You CANNOT lock out people from accessing the system drive. If the user cannot access and read files from the system drive they cannot login. I don't know what you were trying to do but it was going to fail from the start.

HI. Need total help here. I have a Dell computer. Desktop. Windows 7 Ultimate. I have an administr account with a password. Then, like 2 years ago or a bit longer I created a guest account without password. I am using it since then. And have stored a bunch of important files. Now, I can't access that account. The message says: " THE GROUP POLICY CLIENT FAILED TO LOG IN. ACCESS IS DENIED"
And thats it. No more access since 10 days. The administrative account has access with the password. And I created a third account without password which also has access. The problem is that guest account. No way I can access anything. NO idea what to do!
All your help, with detailed steps will really really save be eternally appreciated!

THANKS!!!!

Answer:Guest account access denied.

Try adding a password to the guest account, such as "guest"

If that doesn't work try looking in the Group Policy Editor to change the policy. Something may have changed a Registry setting. GPE is just an editor that stores the info in the Registry.

How do i access the already built-in administrator account so i can make security/privilege changes so that i can change time servers using the command line. because every time i use the NET TIME command it gives me a "access denied" error; which tells me something, only Im not sure what needs to be changed. Also, it says I already am a administrator so why is it giving me a access denied message? This is in Windows 7 ultimate 64-bit.

Answer:administrator account/access denied message

Try using an Elevated Command Prompt to run it.

Hello,
I have a Compaq computer that came with a System Recovery feature. My Dad decided to enable the feature which wiped out most of my Win XP Home OS settings. All the user accounts were deleted, leaving me with the default Owner and Administrator. I need to access the folders for the old user accounts that were deleted. When logged on as Administrator, under Documents and Setting there are folders for the deleted user accounts. However, I am NOT able to access the folders for the users accounts that required a password to logon. I get a "Access Denied" message. I checked the ownership of this folder, and it is the Administrator. I have ran "control userpasswords2" and no accounts exist except the Owner and Administrator. I can't access this folder and really need to recover that data. Is there any way I can get to this data? It has a NTFS partition. Thanks for any input!

Answer:cannot access admin account

I've encounter this problem in win xp not in vista yet. But I believe the solution maybe about the same. Do you now using guest profile, normal user profile or admin profile? Because you say that the pc has 4 accounts that has password protected as well as admin. I suggest you read:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947215

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/1...-failed-logon-user-profile-cannot-loaded.html

make sure that you read carefully instruction on both of the website. If you can try to obtain at least one admin account to do this fix. Have you try to boot in safe mode to delete the account?? I believe that maybe that the admin account that you want to access is corrupted. well good luck

Hi guys, fairly new to win 8 but I do remember 3:11 quite fondly and everything else leading up to this leadbelly software.
Ok, first and last bitch. My son decided to give my mother his new (then) PC...She has a slow dial up and in the transition of adding her as admin and deleting him the network failed long enough to not allow her admin status to take effect but oddly enough allowing him to be deleted as admin....no big deal I thought (clueless as to the throttling grip MS has added to 8)...to date,I have tried everything to resolve this issue but foiled at every turn.
Problem is the YES button is never highlighted in every event to add an admin password.
I have followed pretty much most "solutions" only to be be mocked at the finish line with no YES button.
ANY assistance would be welcomed.
Thanks
Rob.

Hi Guys,

This is driving me crazy (again!) I am trying to fix my friends laptop as I believe possibly some malware is around. He has set himself up a a standard user which was not the smartest of moves. I cannot run any applications without UAC blocking my every move. When I try to open the command prompt (run) and run as administrator it asks me to contimue, "type an administrator password and then click OK". BUT BUT there is nowhere to type this password and indeed the last time I opened up the hidden admin account I was granted access in through ...no probs....this time nope!! I read somewhere that this could be a high level malware attack which takes control of UAC apart from this the PC "seem" to be operating ok.

Any ideas??

Many Thanks

Hi,I must have downloaded a particularly nasty piece of malware on my home PC (running XP Home edition) because now I can't access things like the 'run' command, Control Panel, My Computer (they have all disappeared when clicking the Start button). Also if I press the Windows + E keys to get into Explorer I get the message 'This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator' I also get the 'Virus Alert!' message next to the clock in the system tray. I am able to get into safe mode I can also get into the 'Family' account (which has admin rights) and this works fine with access to everything I would expect. My concern, apart from the obvious lack of access, is that I cannot access my main profile from any account ('access denied') so no documents, firefox bookmarks or ability to copy my mail file. This would be a concern if I had to rebuild. From the 'Family' account I've run AV, spybot, Adaware as well as SDfix with no success in terms of fixing the access issues. They have found and cleaned some malware.I would greatly appreciate it if someone could help me with this problem as it's driving me mentalLogfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2Scan saved at 19:59:02, on 02/10/2008Platform: Windows XP SP3 (WinNT 5.01.2600)MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.6000.16544)Boot mode: NormalRunning processes:C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exeC:\WINDOWS... So... after many years having this problem, I decided to post for some help. I've been using this computer (Acer Aspire with Windows 7 Home premium x64 on an Administrator account) without issues for quite a while. One day, like two years ago, I noticed something weird while using Calibre (the virtual library software): the program was not able to save or edit files because it was not run as administrator. This was odd, because it was not supposed to work that way, and it worked fine without admin privileges before, but then I got used to using it as administrator. After that, I noticed that other programs were having this issue as well (Steam, Spotify, many others) and I gradually integrated into my workflow the use of programs as administrator... until I got fed up recently.

I've been looking for help and answers but it seems no one or almost no one has this exact problem, so I thought I'd better ask for help.

Just to be clear, this has nothing to do with UAC. It is just that if, for example, Spotify is running without admin privileges and it wants to update, the update fails. I have to restart the program as administrator and then it can install whatever it wants. Every installation I do has to be done through rightclick->run as administrator, as an unelevated installation file will fail.

I've recently tried to take ownership of my C:\ drive, to no use. I also tried resetting the files and folder permission to default with the use of

I have seen many threads similar to my issue but all have been able to rectify but myself within XP. Boot sector died and had the XP CD rebuild it.  Verified the boot.ini file but still no good. Can not boot in Safe Mode. Recovery Console does not recognize my Admin password used for my Admin account. I tried a non-destructive reinstall with no joy. I also tried varies data recovery tools on bootable CD's but none can get in "Documents and Settings" becuase access is denied.  Long story short....tryied everything. I can slave my drive to a good PC and view the files in Explorer but "access is denied" to all of my files within "Documents and Settings". How can I get to my protected files without loggin into the drive, which is unbootable. I'm unable to change the Simple File Sharing on this drive because I can not log into the NTFS file system as administrator or in safe mode, only view the files as specified above. Ideas?

My wife's user account (set up as administrator) on our Dell laptop cannot access any internet sites via Internet Explorer. Each time it returns an error message: Access Denied (policy_denied) and a direction to contact the network administrator.... unfortunately, I guess that's me....

This looks like a Content Advisor problem, but it's not enabled on her account and it's set to the most permissive settings in any event. This message occurs for even the most basic requests, e.g. www.google.com

Other user accounts on the laptop are able to get to their home pages.

We recently converted to Comcast Cable internet access and noted this issue thereafter. I found some discussions regarding Comcast branding IE, which it did, so I removed their branding, but this didn't solve the problem. The laptop is wirelessly connected to a Linksys router and then to the Comcast modem. We also have a desktop which isn't having any internet connectivity problems. We're running Windows XP Home edition on both computers.

I can't detect any differences in her user account settings (Tools/Internet Options....) but maybe I'm missing something.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I cannot access the guest account because it is switched off.

I have windows 10 home installed installed on two machines. One main and one server. they are both set up to login with Microsoft my account (not local)

I do not have access to add or copy in my server folders.

Both machines under user account have my username twice. What I assume is the local account (icon to the left of user name is a person in front of a monitor) has groups HomeUsers; Administrators. The other account (icon to the left is a person in front of a globe) only has group HomeUsers. The local account is highlighted but I can't make any changes. everything is grayed out.

When I logout and try to switch accounts, I don't have any options but one account.

How can I make my microsoft account an administrator account? I don't want to mess with accounts and lose access to my files permanently.

If I convert back to a local account, will windows convert the "homeusers" only account to local or switch me to the local account with HomeUsers; Administrator privileges? I started the process but it is changing the username and I don't want to make it any worse.

Answer:Windows 10 can't access my admin account

If you only created or logged in with one account on a Windows 8 or 10 machine (Microsoft account or local), it should be an Administrator. I think ever since Windows 7 the "real" Administrator account, named Administrator is disabled by default. I log into my Win10 box with my Microsoft Account but I also enabled the built in local Administrator account just in case and gave it a nice solid password.

To enable the built in Administrator account, start an elevated command prompt and type in:

net user administrator /active:yes

Then log into it and set a password.

If we only could bring his files over from his to mine there would be no problem but as i said we can't do anything. Can somebody help please? Thanks

Answer:Deleted admin account and can't access to anything

Not exactly sure what you mean if you get his over to yours. Do you also have account on machine? Are you an admin? If so don't read further, just post back.

This tutorial will show you how to enable the built in Admin. It involves changing registry values so done incorrectly will be disastrous for your system. You may not be able to start windows. Warning issued.

Backup the registry. If possible with your account create restore point.

I was thinking Option Four.

Administrator account - Enable or Disable in Windows 10

Assuming you get this resolved create another Admin account that no one uses for just such emergencies. Also disable built admin. For that I think you can just use commands rather than regedit but you can cross that bridge when you get there.

If you have secondary computer and drive bay you could copy data off laptop drive. Of course you would have to remove laptop drive, some are very easy.

Others may have better idea.

I have a user with no admin rights that cannot access nor print to a networked printer on the network. However ALL other users can and in addition to that this particular user is able to install and connect and print to any other networked printer on the domain.

However, when I dial into his computer with my domain admin credentials, I can add, connect and print tot he printer just fine but once I log off and have him log back on with his limited account, he still cannot print to the printer as it says " Access Denied" IT always complains that he does not have sufficient priveledges to access the printer but he's under the same doamin groups as everyone else and can print to any other networked printer just fine..

Is there something we are missing here? Why can he print to any other printer except this one even though everyone else can print to it just fine and also when I log in as admin I can print just fine......Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!!!

My best friend's problem.'Hey, I've come across a major problem with our home computer. A week ago, a missing system32 file caused us to be unable to access winlogon.exe and lsass.exe, meaning we couldn't logon. At all. Not even in safe mode. So we tried everything, and in the end safely reinstalling windows XP was the only solution. We also found our documents from the previous accounts safe and in their places, still taking up 188Gb of our HDD.But the admin account, my boyfriend's, is now saying 'Access Denied' when we try to access it from the current admin. Mine, being a limited account is still accessible. I've tried the above solution, among other things like running DIR in MSDOS and Safe Mode, but nothing works. Our only solution now is to attempt recovery console. Thanks for reading.Could you please reply on here or by emailing [email protected]'EMail Addy removed to prevent Spam...

I cannot find the solution to this anywhere for months now. I've had to do a clean reinstall of my win xp HE. My old user account has dissapeared from user accounts. its still in win explorer is "documents and settings" but every time i try to access it, it says access is denied. Also tried doing so in dos, and with other various programs. I've managed to get the files from within the folder using "getdataback for ntfs".
Would appreciate it if you could help me.

I recently had some problems with my desktop reconfiguring each time I logged in and deleting all my files. Nothing I found on online and fix this problem. So this is the approach I took.
1. Created a temporary administrator account "mine".
2. Deleted my account "Robert".
3. Rebooted the machine, to be doubly sure that all changes had taken effect.
4. Recreated my account "Robert" configured as administrator.
5. Deleted temporary account "mine"

The This seemed to work, I had a stable desktop and I was able to reload all my data files from a backup.

Now we come to the situation that I am hoping someone can help me with. A lot of three files and folders on the system will not give me an immediate access any longer as I have to use UAC. This as affected my backup program SyncBackFree and all so free download manager,

There are now two user accounts that appear to be mirrored, "Robert" & "Robert.machinename"the latter I have never seen before until now and there are no other users on the machine except for myself.

Can someone tell me how I can get it back to be able to the way it should do with out having to do a reinstall.
Thanks, Robert
