Thinkpad X1 Carbon sleep problem

Question: Thinkpad X1 Carbon sleep problem

I have 20A7, since I received it a couple of months ago, it had this problem. If I use sleep mode it never wakes up. Unless I disable usb3.0 mode in BIOS setup. In this case it goes to sleep and wakes up, but after waking it up the adaptive keys are gone and not functioning. It's speakers also doesn't work (mute) until the next reboot.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a bug that is fairly repeatable where when my laptop goes to sleep, the USB ports on the Thunderbolt 3 dock are not active when I wake the computer up. I can unplug the TB3 cable and plug it back in to regain access to the ports. Where can I report this issue?

Hi All. I have a Thinkpad X1 Carbon 2nd Gen 2014 (20A7/20A8),  Win10 64bit, all drivers updated. The problem is that the Adaptive Keyboard always went off automately everytime I resume the ThinkPad from sleep. And it remains off (black) until I reboot the ThinkPad. Or turn off and on the ThinkPad. I have tried to replace my Adaptive Keyboard with another new spare part. But this problem remain unresolved.Could anyone give me some advice? Over the past several years there are many posts of users experiencing variations on this problem with X1 Carbon and X1 Yoga of various generations, including the latest ones (I provide a list below). That is, the systems often cannot come out of sleep mode in some way, shape, or form. I had this problem on my own brand-new X1 Carbon 5th Generation, right out of the box. In my instance, I noticed this issue in the following two scenarios: -After having gone in to sleep mode, once I opened the lid, or press power button once:power light goes from blinking to solid onscreen stays blank/blackseems that if the machine is going to be in the frozen state, keyboard presses do not "unsleep" it (which they normally would). Closing the lid causes the power light to go to solid on, but then opening it again does nothing.in a couple of rarer instances, the machine actually did come out of sleep but then instantly the screen froze (but this was quite uncommon, mostly it just wouldn't come out of sleep at all)-After passing the initial boot screen of Lenovo, the next part shows the Lenovo logo but without the swirling dots and is frozen (the power light would show on)Under both conditions: The power light is solid onThe keyboard lights functionality works: backlighting, FnLock light, mute lightSometimes you can hear the fan workingPlugging in to external display does not display anything on itThe only way to rectify is to do a hard shutdown by holding the power key With... Hi lenanto!

The automatic forum SPAM filter moved your post aside, because it had so many links in it I think. With some help I was able to get it back. The other multiple posts on the same subject have been moved aside - it's just too hard to follow a discussion when it's splintered across threads.

I have had and still have several X1 Carbon's and X1 Yoga's and have not seen any of these problems. Do you have any thoughts on how to reproduce it?

Hi Issue: Thinkpad X1 Carbon 5th Gen black screen / 'screen off' on resume from sleep I know this issue has been posted about several times regarding the X1 series but .... none of those threads seem to have any kind of answer to this problem. This seems like quite a horrendous issue for a +£1500 to have !! Constantly 'hard rebooting' and losing all my open work is seriously seriously annoying. Please note: My drivers are 100% up to date based on Lenovo's own update software. I have all official Windows 10 updates issued to date (21 aug 17). These are the patterns I've noticed: - It doesn't always replicate the same behaviour: after resume from sleep sometimes it's 'black' and other times it's fine. I'd say 66% of the 'lid openings' it's OK but 33% of cases it's not.- I've found that if I shut the lid again and reopen (often 3 or more times and waiting 30+ seconds on each open then 30+ seconds on each close) then I can eventually 'force' it to turn the screen on.- If I 'manually' set the unit to sleep from the start menu rather than just closing the lid, I'm pretty certain that it *does not* exhibit this problem. I'll be 100% certain once I've tried this a few more times.-  I've removed all USB devices from the laptop one-by-one and waited for the problem to reoccur thus ruling out any single or combination of USB devices.- I have the 'lock screen' shown when it does successfully resume from sleep. - The screen 'blackness' looks t... I'm trying to connect my X1 Carbon (4th Gen) to a monitor using HDMI. I have a Lenovo OnePlus dock, which has DisplayPort and VGA outputs but no HDMI. My monitor has VGA, HDMI, and DVI inputs but no DP. I've tried two DP to HDMI adapters (one passive, one active) but neither will work -- I get neither video nor audio. I've already tried updating the BIOS and the graphics driver. I tested this setup on an X230, which also has a DP output. That didn't work, either. I assumed the monitor's DVI input or the cable were bad -- until I tried setting the X230's BIOS display config to use DP during startup. Suddenly, the output worked -- until the boot sequence ended. Then it stopped. This indicates that the DP output on the X230 works, the HDMI input on the monitor works, and the cable and adapter work. So why can't I see video after the machine boots? I can't try this test on the X1. I was only able to get back into the X230's BIOS by connecting the monitor to an HDMI cable (my Pro Dock has an HDMI output). But the X1 and dock lack HDMI connections, so if I think I'll be unable to get back into the BIOS if I set the boot display to digital. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello, I have a ThinkPad X1 Carbon 3rd generation. Two days ago, I have updated the BIOS to the latest version 1.12. The installation went well and I successfully booted into Windows 10 with no issues. However, the fan was not working anymore. I did not notice this until the laptop was extremely hot (which is very unusual for this laptop under low/medium load). In particular, I was just running a "disk cleanup" using the native Windows tool and after 5 minutes I decided to kill the process (this operation usually takes 1-2 minutes). My feeling was that due to the temperature the cpu was in throttling. At that moment, I noticed that the fan was not active. After a shutdown, the fan was again working. However, I noticed that the fan kicks in much more often than it was used to. For this reason, I did two things:- I have downgraded the BIOS to 1.11: BIOS 1.12 updated the CPU microcode, I am not sure that the microcode was downgraded as well when I downgraded the BIOS. - I have run the "Intel® Processor Diagnostic Tool": I was afraid that the high temperatures may have damaged the cpu. The tool reported that the maximum temperature of the cpu during the benchmark was always safely within the expected threshold and all the tests were passed. Now, I still can see that the fan kicks in much more often than usual. I have noticed, using sensors under Ubuntu 15.10, that every time there is a very short burst/peak of... Read more

So I've delivered it to Support Company. Act number is 7630 (11.01.2016). Engineers said that the motherboard and some other stuff should be replaced. Now is 2nd of February 2016 and I have no any new info about new spare parts fpr my laptop. Engineers from tech support (Belmont group) said that LENOVO still did not reply on the delivery date. So I want to know when should I expect spare parts for my laptop?

My Thinkpad X1 Carbon 4th 20FB with Win10 was working fine with Photoshop when it had Intel HD Graphics Driver - 10 [64] V21.20.16.4550 Using the Lenovo Companion, I let it upgrade the graphics driver to V21.20.16.4718 back in late July.  Immediately after this upgrade, Photoshop no longer rendered images properly, making it useless.  Images that are opened do not appear on the screen and the UI is jumbled.  I reverted to driver v21.20.16.4550 through Companion as that version was still listed, and everything was fine again.  I noticed the other day upon opening Photoshop that I had the rendering problem again.  I checked my graphics driver version in Device Manager, and somehow it updated to v22.20.16.4785 (although I cannot figure out how, as Lenovo Companion does not show an update to this version in its history, and neither does Windows Update). All I want to do is rollback my graphics driver to v21.20.16.4550, which I know works.  But this is not an option any longer in Companion, and this version is not present on the Lenovo website either.  Obtaining this version through 3rd party websites is not Lenovo specific and refuses to install. Please provide me a link or a place to go where I can get Intel HD Graphics Driver - 10 [64] V21.20.16.4550

Answer:Thinkpad X1 Carbon 4th 20FB Graphics Driver Problem

You should still be able to revert to the older driver via Device Manager. Right-click on Start and select Device ManagerLeft-click on Display Adapters to expandRight-click on your Intel HD Graphics adapter and select PropertiesSelect the Driver tab and then select Update DriverSelect Browse my computer for driver softwareSelect Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computerSelect the older driver version, and then click Next to installBest of luck,

I posted a similar question earlier and people referred me to the Yoga (much appreciated).  However, I was interested in the 2.6 lb carbon version with touch screen capabilities.  Asus has a Spin 7 model that is very good at 2.65lb, but I miss the red mouse toggle in the middle of the keyboard and Asus's track pad was designed too large....causing unintended tapping.  The Yoga, while nice, is heavier than I was looking for.  The 14 inch screen is about 3.3lb? the 12 inch at 3? I thought that some of the earlier Thinkpad Carbons had touch screen and was hoping they would make a return soon.  Thanks,

I have installed Windows 7 Professional on my IBM Thinkpad t21. After installing, I got the latest drivers for my video card and my display. It has the latest BIOS revision (1.16). I also have the latest Power Management driver from Lenovo, which says it supports Windows 7.My problem is with sleep. My computer seems to go to sleep perfectly. When I wake it up, however, the screen stays blank and the hard drive LED stays on, although I can hear no activity from the hard drive. The only thing I can do at this point is shut the computer down with the power button, which prompts the safe mode startup configuration screen to show up the next time I boot. Two other things you may need to know. Very rarely when I wake out of sleep the Windows login screen comes up, but the hdd led is still on and I still need to cold boot. Second thing, when I type in "powercfg -lastwake" to the Command Prompt it says "Wake History Count - 0" This seems to indicate that my computer never actually came out of sleep at all.I was wondering what could be causing this problem and if there was any way to fix it.System specs:IBM Thinkpad t21 2647-TD2800 Mhz Intel Pentium 3 Processor512 MB RamS3 Graphics Savage IX/1014Thinkpad PM Driver 1.55BIOS Revision 1.16

The only way for it to work is for me to restart the computer by holding the power button. It doesn't matter if I'm on battery power or a/c power. And it doesn't matter if I manaully put it to sleep or close the laptop lid. However, if I go hibernate instead there is no issue. Does anyone know what could be causing this? Hi All, I understand there are other users on this forum with similar issues with this model, however Im creating another thread on this issue to highlight to lenovo this is a problem. We have very recently purchased approximatly 60 thinkpad yogas for our staff and thus far we have had 10 or so staff come to me saying the laptop cannot be woken up from sleep and at the same time the machine is very hot. The only way we can wake the machine and to stop it from continuing to boil is open the cover and remove the battery or use a paper clip to push the hard off switch.  We esculated the problem to lenovo via our vendor, and not long after we recieved a phone call from a tech in Lenovo Malaysia asking me to install a power management driver and to confirm the verson of firmware (ver 1.07). Although the driver was already loaded I re-installed it on one of the machines that had the problem and upgraded the firmware to version 1.09 however a couple of weeks later the problem re-occured on it. We would like to know if Lenovo is working on this problem or wether they acknowlede their is problem to start with. We have concerns that the machine may overheat and burn something down.

Since upgrading to Windows 10 , my X1 is having awful power management issues. It randomly powers off when the lid is closed and often times won't wake up from sleep. It does this power on , blinking green light power button , power off mode:  see video of issue here:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G0jd7fjxmJg The only way to get it out of this mode is plug in the power cord and press and hold the power button to force off then turn on. Even though the battery is at 90% + it won't power on without being plugged in.  I have type: 20BSCTO1WW , Bios N14ET32W , Windows 10 ProAll latest ThinkVantage and Lenovo Power Management updates installed  Any thoughts? Does it need to go back to Lenovo ?

I am having the exact same issue. After pressing power button the light flashes 8 times and there is then a pop from the speakers, this repeats 3 times. model:20BS0032USBIOS:N14ET32W This started for me after I ran Lenovo Updates on 10/8/15. I am able to get the laptop to eventually start by holding the power down for about 6 seconds and then powering the device back on. The start screen is a much different Lenovo splash page. I also had to roll back the wireless drivers as I could not connect to certain networks which previously had no issues.

I just bought a new X1 Carbon with Windows 10 and am having problems with it going to sleep mode and waking it up. I have the power button and closing the lid set to put Windows to sleep. Sometimes when I'm away for a while, the screen will go black like it should. But the power button is still solid green. Pressing and releasing the power button won't wake up the computer. The only way to wake it is to press and hold the power button, which reboots the computer. Also, is there a manual for this computer somewhere? All I got was a small pamphlet, and the only manual I can find online is from the 2nd gen model.

Answer:thinkpad x1 carbon

Hello and welcome,

Generally speaking, we're not supposed to be discussing password bypass.Other than reloading the OS you're probably out of luck.  I take it you didn't create recovery media?

Have you checked the usual: CAPSLOCK on (or off if on when creating the password), phantom NUMLOCK, etc?

I have started using the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 2 as my main work laptop this week, and have officially retired my ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 1 for backup purpose. So far this is what i feel are the major positives of the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 2 vs Gen 1.

Positives:

-Better TrackPad
The quality of the Thinkpad X1 Carbon Gen 1 trackpad is a definitively a plus compared to the old ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 2. The surface finish of the ThinkPad Carbon Gen 2 is smooth, compared to the rough rubberised surface of the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 1. Also, the trackpad left and right click is more precise, and is not as loud as the ThinkPad Yoga, which is the main convertible tablet i use nowadays.

-Build Quality

ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 1 that i got had some build quality issues, especially in the screen area and the TrackPad. Also, the overall fit and finish of the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 1 is lot worse than the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 2. I have to say that the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 2 fit and finish is top notch, it is the only ThinkPad that i can compare to the Macbook Air 13 that i got one year ago (yes i do have Macbook laptop).

Surface coating on the X1 Carbon Gen 2 is anodised hard layer over Magnesium Alloy for the main body chassis (i think the screen cover is CFRP, but i am not sure), rather than the more typical rubberised layer of the older ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 1.

Palmrest on the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 2 also resists fingerprint and pal... Read more

HI everyone, I have a question regarding SIM in x1 carbon. I am not very good with technology, so I don`t know if my x1 carbon has a working SIM slot. It has a slot for SIM card but when I put it on, it doesn`t respond anything, like `detecting` or something like that. My question is: does x1 Carbon (Model 20A8-S00600) has a working SIM card slot. If it does, how can I make it functional. If it doesn`t what do I need to do/buy to make it functional.  Thanks,Kushtrim

Answer:Thinkpad x1 carbon SIM

Hi and welcome, kushtrimYour laptop is "WWAN ready" only, i.e.has the SIM card holder, the SIM card reader and WWAN antennas installed. WWAN modem wasn't factory preinstalled, that's a cause you don't see anything once SIM card is installed. So, to use laptop WWAN capabilities, purchase and install WWAN modem - 3G or 3g/LTE.

I just got this great X1 Carbon Touch with i7 and Win 7 Pro.  When I close the lid or even manually triy to put it to sleep, it shuts the screen off, but the machine stays on the first time it did this I threw it in my bag and when I pulled it out 30 min or so later it was almost to hot to touch and the fan was screaming.  I had to manually shut it down.  It generally does not happen frist time after boot, it is generally the 3-4 th time or more. So very unpredictable.

I have a brand new X1 Carbon 3rd Gen laptop.  Am having intermittent (3 to 4x daily) wake-up-from-sleep issues.  When my screen is closed and I reopen it to continue working, the green light on the power button does not light up and no buttons will wake up the laptop so I hard-press the power button, which resets everything.  Called many times for support and was asked to return it for an exchange.  Just received my second laptop and it is behaving exactly the same.  I've done a ton of on-line research and tried a lot of things, including changing settings under power management.  What am I doing wrong??

Windows 10 RTM.X1 Carbon Gen 3 When going to sleep/suspend, many times the device will not actually enter sleep.  The lid LED remains on (not pulsing) and eventually it will bluescreen and create a memory.dmp file before shutting down entirely.  Booting up from this state is a clean boot, and any prior data is lost. I've updated everything recent from the Lenovo webiste as of 7/22 and the new Lenovo software updater for Windows 10, and no luck.

Dear Lenovo, I've noticed this issue many times already. The issue is I put my laptop into sleep, next morning it restore in hibernation mode meaning sometime during the night it woke up automatically, doing nothing until the battery runs to the hybernation threshold into hybernation mode. I'm running Windows 7 on ThinkPad X1 Carbon (3448). Please help.

Answer:X1 Carbon automatically wake up after sleep.

It could be caused by several things. AFAIK, try these settings that can help prevent the laptop while it's asleep. Go to your BIOS and make sure to replicate these pictures:  Also, the WiFi adapter can cause unwanted wake ups. You can try to prevent it by going to Device Manager -> Network Adapters -> Double Click on the name of your WiFi adapter. Then follow this picture: Make sure that "Wake on Magic Packet" and "Wake on Pattern Match" are both disabled. Hope this helps.

Hi Akjs,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

This kind of issue might also occur if the graphic driver version is incorrect. To verify it go to start and type ?Device Manager? and double click on that to open, expand graphic adapter and right click on it go properties, click on drivers tab to get the driver version.

To update the system drivers & application you can use ThinkVantage system update utility.

Hope this helps.

I manually put the system to sleep via the Start menu (or whatever it's called now).  Usually, when I come back and hit the power button, it resumes just fine.  But it seems that every now and then, it gets totally stuck.  The green light on the power button is blinking slowly, but the machine won't respond at all.  I press the power button, press the enter button, do everything I can think of, but it stays off.  This happens on battery and on AC.  It's not easily reproducible; it's done it maybe two or three times in the past week that I've had it.  I'm looking for some pattern but haven't found it.   The only resolution I've found is to hold down the power button until I get full power off.  Then I can boot from scratch, losing anything I had open at the time of the sleep.  Any ideas?

Answer:X1 Carbon 2015 won't wake from sleep

I've had this too...seems to me to be a Windows 8.1 issue.  Frustrating, especially coming from a MacBook Air which is pretty flawless in the reliability, dependability and battery life department.

Greetings, My X1 Carbon Thinkpad will not connect to wi-fi either several times a week, or at worst, several times a day. I can try to get online with the Thinkpad and the tiny orange symbol is lit on the wi-fi icon. Clicking on that, the wi-fi message says, "not connected."  Sitting in the same chair, I pick up my Samsung Note tablet, and it effortlessly connects to my home network. My phone connects and my Kindle connects. Everything connects except the Thinkpad. At this moment, the X1 Carbon Thinkpad is connected, and I am typing on it in this forum. But, in an hour, I could pick it up, and it will not be connected. The "Windows Network Diagnostics" will tell me "Problem found." The explanation will be "Problem with wireless adapter or access point."  Then it will explain: "Not fixed."   Any suggestions?   Best regards,Bill Phillips, Durham, North Carolina

Hi, Reposting this because the solution I thought I found turned out not to work. I have a Thinkpad X1 Carbon 3443 running Win 7 Pro 64 bit.  The Wi-Fi adapter (Intel N6205) is very flaky and just doesn't work right.  The main problem is that when resuming from sleep, it takes approximately a minute to come back on.  Nothing can be done - I just have to sit and wait.  The troubleshooter is of no help.  This has been the case for over a year.  I have given up waiting for a new device driver to be posted.  Any ideas? Thanks!

Hi, I am not very familiar with computer stuff so my description might be too simple and lack important information. Please feel free to let me know what I miss so I could update the missing part ASAP. I bought this 3rd generation X1 Carbon (win 8.1 installed) two months ago. Everything worked just fine until I installed AVAST 2015 antivirus software when I could no longer connect to any wireless network. Well, strictly speaking the laptop was connected to the wireless network but I couldn't open any webpage successfully. The strange thing about it was that the remote control that I previously set up between my laptop and my office PC actually worked. So every time I wanted to open up a webpage, I had to do so from my office PC using remote control. I am thinking if it is an issue caused by my installation of AVAST. And if so, how can I fix it? Thank you very much everybody for taking the time and effort to read this and give instructions. I really appreciate any help!

I just got X1 Carbon. Let's make it clear that this notebook is not worth the money. X230 is probably much better choice. You will get much better notebook with better hardware, better battery time, better size. It is not worth to buy X1 just because it is thin. Actually when you have X230 in your hands it feels much smaller than X1 Carbon!!! X1 Carbon Facts:No i7 with 8GB RAMNo 1000Gbps NIC (not even USB adapter with 1Gbps) I dont understand how business notebook does not have 1Gbps NIC. My 3.5 years old X61 has got 1Gbps NIC. Brand new X1 Carbond does not have it. I cannot believe it. Don't buy it. It is waist of money. Look at Toshiba or MacBook or X230. They are much better notebooks. I will look at Toshiba next after this bad experience. It is clear that Lenovo is not IBM and they started making compromizes. Thinkpad is not as it used to be. Have a good day.

Answer:X1 Carbon is the worst thinkpad I have ever had - think before you buy

"X230 is probably much better choice." - For many, including myself, the 12.5" screen is a deal breaker. Some of my colleagues use those and it's just too small for me. As for Mac, no thanks to running win on it.

Hello everybody, is there anybody that has upgraded his 3rd Gen X1 Carbon to a 1TB ssd? I'm running out of place and would like to have a bigger ssd and do not know which one I could use. I tried reading in the forums, but was not able to find out which SSD would work. Somehow NVMe is not supported, it has to be a PCIe SSD (I think), but I'm not too familiar with these things. 1. Correct2. Definitely can see it if I look closely, but very quickly got used to it3. No charging on the USB 3.0 dock.4. The dongle was an included item for early orderers (although they may have had to wait for it as there was a shortage).  When I ordered, the dongle was completely unavailable / not included.  Now, I believe the dongle is an optional add-on.

I received my Thinkpad X1 Carbon a week ago and it's been working fine both on battery power and on the AC adapter the entire time. This morning, I closed my laptop like usual (so it goes to sleep but doesn't shut down) and brought it to class with me. When I tried to wake it up though, nothing would work. It won't boot with the AC plugged in either. I'm pretty sure the battery is an integrated battery and I don't want to void my warranty by fiddling with it. Does anyone know what I can do about this problem? It's the only computer I have in college and I'm taking some computer science courses so my problem is pretty urgent. I also can't feasibly bring it to somewhere to repair since I'm in a pretty isolated town and I don't own a car. Also by reading the forums here, I'm under the impression that the Lenovo customer support line is simply terrible. Is that true? Once again, thanks for any possible insight!

'afternoon.
Welcome to the community.

Sorry you're having issues.
Have you tried the "reset" hole on the bottom of the laptop? I believe that it's unmarked, but you'd use a paper clip to trip the switch. I don't have an X1C, personally, so I can't describe it further. I'm mobile at the moment, so have limited search capability, but if you search the forum for a post by Mark_Lenovo, I believe there's a picture of it.

Regarding contacting Service, I've personally never had anything but good experiences. Please keep in mind that on open forums like these, the good reports seldom get posted.

Hello Support Forum: I performed that recent bios update to the X1 Carbon recently. The problem I'm experiencing, is the power button has a solid green light and it wont turn on when I press it. The only way to get my laptop to boot is to let the battery drain and die (I know this when the green light is out), plug the ac adapter in and turn it on that way. The problem will persist when I try to shut it down again.   Any thoughts? Thank you guys, I appreciate any help, I use my personal laptop for work.

After updating Windows 10 to the newest version today,And updating to the newest BIOS version using Lenovo System Updatemy Thinkpad X1 (4th gen) won't startup by opening the lid, like it used to.Lenovo Support says they can't help me. Going into stand-by and waking up by closing and opening the lid works fine. What doesn't work is powering up the Thinkpad (after shutdown) by opening the lid. Any ideas?

Just got the laptop and I am having some issues with the trackpad. I can not find any settings in the control panel for the trackpad itself. Under the mouse settings there are some generic settings but I am getting an error stating that the drivers are incompatible for the settings. I do not have a control panel link for the Ultranav. I tried downloading it from Lenovo and it would not let me install them. Any ideas? Thanks!

When I bought my ThinkPad X1 Carbon (3rd Gen) I had the option to buy a 512 GB PCIe SSD but didn't have the funds available for it at the time. Is it possible to send my laptop in (so I don't void the warranty by doing it myself) and have my 256GB SSD SATA_3 OPAL2 upgraded to the 512GB SSD PCIe? Also, at the time of ordering my computer, there was no option to have 16GB Memory so I had to get 8GB Memory. Is it possible to have the RAM upgraded now?

Answer:Upgrading SSD and RAM ThinkPad X1 Carbon (3rd Gen)

No RAM is soldered to the motherboard to replace ram would require you to pay for new motherboard and that will be really expensive since then you will be paying for same price as new laptop sort off and about SSD yes that you can change yourself it is screwed down with 1 screw under back cover remove the back cover and you will see a long ssd m.2 installed unscrew it and install your new one

Is there a fix for this?  I just ran the latest update as of 11/15/2015.   Prevoiusly on Windows 8.1, sleep worked fine. Now, all it does is try to boot, but shuts down and goes into a loop. So, the only way to get it back running again is to hold down the power button.  But what's the point of putting it in sleep mode if I have to do that each time?

Answer:2015 X1 Carbon with Windows 10 Pro won't wake up from sleep

Have you tried updating the drivers to the latest version? I had this problem Aswell but after I did drivers update it stopped and my x1 carbon could wake and sleep as normal again other wise it would sleep then wake after I open the lid but once I put in sleep again it would not wake up but after I did driver update it solved my problem

Every time I leave the PC for a while and it goes to sleep, when I come back and unlock it, I get a blue screen and have to reboot. Its veryfrustrating as this is a new (2months) PC, very high spec (i7, 16gb, 1TB SSD) expensive machine and I would not expect this to happen. I almost regret buying this now and not sticking with an apple machine. Anyone any advice before I wipe this thing and install linux on it.....DerekDere

Hi everyone, to describe my issue quite frankly: No matter whether I put my X1C into Sleep or Hibernate .... more often than note it keeps waking up. Not within the first half hour or so.....but if i leave it in hibernate in my bag for a few hours it's usually awake later one or the battery is drained because it was in hibernate too long.... Does anyone know a solution to this?

Answer:2014 X1 Carbon keeps waking up from Hibernate and Sleep

Since I updated the drivers and software through the Lenovo System Update last week the HDMI as well as the DisplayPort are not working properly anymore:Boot display on DisplayPort / HDMI not working anymore -- only laptop screen, despite numerous Bios setting attemptsafter sleep DisplayPort/HDMI not working -- I have to unplug/plug the display several times rapidly before the display connects again (WIN-P brings up the display fly-out on the right of the screen, but any selection other than "internal" says "cannot find any external display" (paraphrased)after the external screen turns of during inactivity it is not recognized anymore when mouse is moved // again unplug/plug several times is necessary.

I am using the Turtle Beach Micro II for USB sound. It worked fine on my previous Thinkpad machines. Now with my new Carbon X1, when power management puts the screen to sleep, the sound sutters. I have looked at power management. Disabled most power management options. Still happening when the screen goes to sleep. Any troubleshooting tips or recommendations?

Howdy folks, I did some quick searching and could not find an answers to my problem and thus am posting here. I have a X1 Carbon 3rd Gen (Type 20BS) with Windows 10 and over the past 2-3 months have noticed the following problem: Problem: After placing the computer into sleep mode via the start button and closing the lid the computer will randomly start back up. I will often open my pc after noticing how overheated it is and find that it came back on and for some reason the touchscreen has been typing and opening applications. Obviously this is very annoying and results in my computer draining its batter and random applications being opened. Any ideas on what may be causing this and how I can fix it?  Happy to provide driver details and any other diagnostics if you think it would help.  Thanks,Andy

Answer:Display Will Not Sleep on Battery - X1 Carbon 5th Generation

Hi Michael, and welcome to the Lenovo User Community!

Thank you for that very comprehensive description of your machine's situation. SInce you have only Windows 10 Enterprise and Google Chrome installed, and no other software, I would start by adding the Lenovo Power Management Driver.

Very frustrating... My X1 Carbon, using Windows 8.0 (due to corporate policy I am not allowed to upgrade to 8.1 nor downgrade to 7.0) which includes 4 Gigs of RAM, and an Intel SSD, if placed into sleep mode (either by closing the lid or pressing the FN-F4 button), will not wake from sleep mode if the machine has been in sleep mode for a while (guessing anything over an hour.)  Yes, Yes, I know pressing the FN key should bring the computer out of sleep-mode, but the FN key doesnt work.  The only thing that works is to completely shut-down the computer and turn the computer back on, which naturally causes the machine to completely reboot. Any and all help would be appreciated.

When 4th gen tries to go to sleep, the power light stays green, along with other lights like mic and mute. Display stays black and keyboard/input is locked up until I hard turn off the laptop by holding power button down (black screen hang). I think it started after the firmware for intel management engine was updated to 11.0.18.1002 but I can't downgrade it now. I tried uninstalling and downgrading drivers, but doesn't work. What eventually kind of works (for now, at least), is to downgrade the bios to 1.19 here: https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles/n1fuj13w.exe What's also weird is that the intel ME firmware was supposed to fix these symptoms but instead caused them for me (I believe);<11.0.18.1002>(N1CRG38W)

during power cycles.- (Fix) Fixed a number of security issues.
- (Fix) Fixed an issue where the ME might crash when resuming from sleep.
- (Fix) Fixed an issue where the system might hang after boot from G3 power
state.

unconditional power sequence might be misreported as an exit from sleep

I would report this directly to support but Lenovo it won't allow to me register my wife's X1 with my account inspite of the fact that I'm the one who ordered it. Ugh. Machine model: 20HRCT01WW My wife has 6 week old machine and it is much slower to wake from sleep than its predecessor (2nd Gen Carbon X1). I timed it this morning and it took in the range of 10 seconds. I just double checked the old, takes 4-5 seconds to wake up. (Having been asleep for several days). One would niavely assume, newer machine with faster CPU and SSD should wake faster. I have a pretty decent understanding of the various sleep states (S0 -> S4 - i.e. hibernate). I have spent a few minutes in the Event Viewer but can't find much useful logging of sleep state changes to figure out is going on. I have just time the time to wake from hibernate and its only marginally worse than sleep (~12 secs). (Full reboot is noticebly faster). How can I tweak the system so that wake from sleep is less painful? ThanksMark Levison

Answer:X1 Carbon: after opening the lid in sleep mode it does not wake up

Hi Asher,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I?m sorry to hear that your Lenovo ThinkPad X1 carbon doesn?t wake up from sleep properly.

I would suggest you to try installing the latest version of display drivers and Lenovo Power management driver and check if it resumes from sleep normally.

If the above said didn?t help, try the "reset" hole on the bottom of the laptop. You'd use a paper clip to trip the switch.

Hope this helps!

Best regards,
Mithun.

My x1 carbon is set to not doing anything when the laptop is closed. When I put the computer to sleep and open the laptop, the power button will continously blink, but nothing happens. Pressing the power button does not turn it on either. Sometimes closing the laptop & reopening will instantly reboot the computer, other times I have to hold the power button down for about 5-10 seconds. When the laptop does turn on after sleeping, I have to manually reconnect to the wifi. Sometimes I have to run the "troubleshoot problems" task because it will not connect to the wifi. This issues occurs on many of our laptops at work, all throughout various times of the day. Updating the drivers doesn't resolve the issue and we don't believe there is a problem with our network.

I see that the adaptive keyboard auto-dims after inactivity. I'd like to manually dim/sleep the adaptive keyboard so that the backlight doesn't distract in a dark room. Is there a way to do this? If not, I'd like to put in a feature request for it. Thanks!
