certain files fail to copy from cd to desktop harddrive... help pls

Question: certain files fail to copy from cd to desktop harddrive... help pls

Few years ago i stored some music/video files on blank discs.

Just recently i decided to copy the music files from those cds to my hard drive.

When i insert the cd into the computer, the procedure begins normally. some albums are copied to my desktop without a problem. The noise is normal when the cd drive goes to work.

But then a certain album might give problems. The cd drive will copy each track but then it will struggle to copy a certain file. The noise from the cd drive goes silent all of a sudden. Then there is no progress and applications might freeze if i try to use them. To cancel this i have to eject from the cd drive.

Anyone know whats going on here and how i can copy all the media files from the cds to my pc please?

The cds are not scratched. The files were saved to dvd+r discs.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I can only think of a dirty disk (finger prints?). Wash it with detergent and cotton cloth making movements from inside to the edge.

I was going to make a backup of some files. So i accidentally draggedthe folder i wanted to backup to my flash drive, there wouldn't be aproblem except in the process i watched it say it was copying then itwas done, but it couldn't move the folder the files were all originallyin. It gave me an option to retry and to cancel so i try retry a fewtimes and didn't work so i canceled. Now the original folder is stillthere with nothing in it and nothing is on the flash drive. Is there atemp folder or something that would still have those files? Thank you

Answer:File copy fail, now files gone?

First, your post makes no sense at all - copy or move - which? You can look in the recycle bin I guess, but without knowing exactly what you did it's impossible to say for sure.

I just installed a new harddrive onto my computer and i was wondering is there a way to move files without a copy leftover. Like i wanna move file a from harddrive one to harddrive two but whenever i do it just makes a copy of file a on harddrive two. I want it to just move the file without the copy. Is there a way to do this? I know i could just cut the file and move it but i wanted to just drag and drop.Thank in advance =]

Answer:Move files from one harddrive to another without copy

Open Windows Explorer twice, place them side by side and click and drag from one HD to the other.

I had a folder from my documents and i placed it into the director of my 2gb thumb/flash drive and it said it moved, then at the end it said that it couldn't move the folder. I just watched it move all these files to the drive that are now gone, just because the folder itself wouldn't move. Any help or ideas will be appreciated, Thank you.

Answer:File copy/move fail, now files gone?

It should have created a copy...I usually don't pay attention to such, but I think that's what happens.

The files are either moved, copied...or in one location or both.

They don't just disappear, unless one of your drives is defective.

Try running chkdsk /r on the flash drive.

I'm not sure which forum to put this in - so I apologize if wrong.

I have a laptop that I'm running Vista Home Premium 32. I installed SP1 (believe me that is malware)

Now I can't get into Windows. When I try to repair, it just stalls.

I can't even get it to boot from the Vista CD.

I did a hard drive diagnostics tests in the bio and it said the hard drive was okay. And when I try to get into safe mode, it runs thru the files, but then stalls.

With desktops I have piggy backed the hard drives to copy. Is there a way to do that with laptop hard drives?

I have also tried the boot from network, and it recognizes the network but says there is no boot filename received. Is there something I can do from that?

Also, I am trying to boot from a USB with recovery files. When I go into the bios there are three USB options. USB harddrive , USB with key and USB (as I recall these are the three options) I put these as the first three options, tried to reboot, but it didn't recognize the "disk" (The usb was in.)

any suggestions?

Answer:Copy files from corrupted laptop harddrive?

USB is not bootable unless the boot files and boot image exist on the drive. You can make it bootable with the HP Drive Key Boot Utility.

There are adapters for connecting laptop drives to desktops.

Another recovery option is the bootable UBCD4Win CD.

To boot from the network, there needs to exist a bootable XP installation to boot from, usually set up on a network drive (NAS).

I have this WD My Passport external portable harddrive which I have used for a couple of years. I was writing something to the drive one day when the USB connection seems to be somewhat loose and the drive disconnected momentarily and reconnected itself but the file I was trying to write ended prematurely...

Now when I try to use the Seagate Harddrive test tool for windows and do a Short Generic test and the result failed.. I am fear it might have been caused by the disconnection and might eventually corrupt the entire drive... I try to run chkdsk but there aren't any errors detected it seems and files seems to be accessible as normal... Is there a way to fix the harddrive without losing data in the drive or confirm the drive is indeed failing?

Answer:Seagate Harddrive test tool fail but harddrive data seems intact

Run the most thorough and extensive test available with the WD hard drive utilities.

If it fails the thorough test, you may have a warranty claim.

Or the Seagate tool. Whatever you have. Your title is confusing.

Time Laptop, 1600+, Windows XP, I have had a crash on my laptop whilst trying to load XP patches. Windows will not load on the laptop, I am unable to get onto my harddrive without reformating from the disks that came with it. I have presentations and other files I want to try and rescue before doing that so have a plan, can any body advise if you belive it will not work or give me any valuble tips.It is my intention to take the Harddrive out of the Laptop and connect it to my mates system as a slave (He is XP, my desktop in 98SE). I believe I will have to get an adaptor from maplins to be able to put the laptop hard disk on to a normal IDE cable(anybody know if this is true?) I will then access the laptop hard drive through my mates OS, copy the files required and burn them on to CD. Finally I will re install the XP with the provided disk. Anybody see any major floors in this or know it won't work?

Answer:Rescue laptop harddrive files by useing Desktop

Have you tried simply installing XP over itself.Put the XP disk in the drive, boot the computer (you will need to ensure the first boot device in the BIOS is the CD/DVD drive) and then select to install the O/S. This will not overwrite your data only XP

I am trying to ask a question and it would be so much easie if I could copy/paste from my desktop the files I am referring to and peoplpe could see what I am talking about. But I cannot figure out how to do it. I can make them copy/ paste to Notepad or Word and such but not to this question sheet. So how do I do it? Any help would be appreciated.Thanx,Dick R.

Answer:How do you copy/paste files from the desktop?

It all depends on the files and exactly what you mean by copying a "file". You can't paste a picture for example, nor a program.Any "text" you have copied into NotePad can be highlighted then copy / pasted onto this forum.Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Scenarios:

I can copy/paste text between my local and remote hosts running Win8.1 BUT NOT FILESIf I enable Drives in the remote gateway policy I can copy/paste files but that breaks our security requirementIf I RDP to the gateway server and then RDP from there to my Win8.1 remote host I can copy/paste filesIf I connect to a Win7 remote host via the gateway server I can copy/paste files
It seems that we've isolated this down to Win8.1 but I can't find any setting that would impact whether I can copy files or not.

Yes...when you turn on "Disk Drives" for the local resources...in the Options of your RDC.

hello

Assume i have 1000 files on a DVD.
I drag all these files into desktop, suddenly I see it's 920 files.
So some files are missing.

What can this be?
There were no errors. I do not think something is wrong.
I first thought maybe hidden files are counted in the DVD but not on desktop?
Maybe something on desktop?

Anyone have any ideas? I tried to put on "Show hidden files" -- It's a Toshiba A100.

Answer:Satellite A100: some files are missing when copy from DVD to desktop

I just ran an antivirus scan on that folder and it scanned let's say 1500 files.
Haha. Antivirus though probably scanned all those Thumbs.db and desktop.ini etc.
..And maybe Windows Vista do now show those when you want to see number of files?

hello

im on a domain

we have a network share which i'll call H:

anyways i have a small folder on this share called backups with a few small files in it.

I opened command prompt H:> and typed:

copy .\backups c:\Desktop

the command was a success and it listed all the files that were transferred.

anyways... i thought the folder and corresponding files would appear on my Desktop but no go...

then after running a dir /A command on C: i realized at the root of C: there is a file called Desktop and not a directory.

Its gets more interesting. I ran a "my computer" search and could not find the folder name "backups" anywhere on the entire pc, or the files that were in it.

I even checked my profile \tatem\documents and settings\desktop and still... no go.

"totally stumped"

any ideas...?

i just hope it didnt append that data to the file called Desktop on c: \ root, as im assuming its there for some sort of administrative reason, condisering it has no file extention.

thanks.
***update: ran this command instead H:> copy .\backups "c:\Documents and Settings\tatem\Desktop" and it worked ok...
i was just thinking it would have placed the folder on my desktop and not just the contents... still trying to figure out where the original transfer went though... (senario above)

I received that message right now and then it launched "Intel Matrix Storage Console". So it says my C drive may fail. How does this happen? Is it because I only have 30 gigabytes left in my harddrive (out of a total of 250 gb)?
Also sometimes my computer just shuts down for no reason (i've had this problem once in a while). Is that due to overheating or leaving the computer on too long?

Answer:A harddrive in the system reports it may fail

Mechanical hard drives do fail, they do not last forever. I would back up your data and replace the drive ASAP.

Check your temperatures and post results. It could be heat or a faulty power supply.

i have a Q190 for 12 months, the harddrive fail last week.  right after the warranty expired oct 25. i install a new harddrive in it.i have usb key with win10 on it, as if i have to install window, better go with win10.  Now i need the window 8 key to install, as it doesnt have a label with win key anymore.on the menu it said win8 key is in BIOS, i couldnt find it.any help ??thanks

Answer:Q190 harddrive fail, how to retrieve win8 key to restore ??

hi enook,

Welcome to the Forums.

If you have a Windows 10 product key then you can install Windows 10 right away and use the product key to activate it.

However, if you don't have a Win10 product key and you're planning to upgrade using the WIn8.1 key to Windows 10, you should:
1. Follow this guide on how to download a Win8.1 ISO (see Option 1) then check this guide on how to create a bootable Win9.1 USB flashdrive.

2. Reinstall Windows on the Q190 using the bootable flashdrive that you've created on Step 1 (the installer should automatically detect the Win8 product key in the BIOS and will automatically activate Windows).

In case you get issues activating the OS, you should activate by phone.

3. Insert your Win10 USB flashdrive (or copy the contents into the Q180) and navigate to X:\Sources\Setup.exe (this is the path of the Win10 installation files) and follow the prompts to upgrade Windows 10.

Note:

You can find the Win8.1 product using tools discussed in this article.
You can only activate Win10 if you have upgraded from an activated copy of Win8.1 or if you have a retail Win10 product key.

Let me know if this works for you.

I recently bought a new Lenovo G780, as my old HP laptop failed on me. However, the harddrive from my HP was fine, so when I got the new computer I decided to just take the harddrive out of my HP and put it into my new Lenovo. I've got the drivers for everything else to work, except my wireless network adapter refuses to install drivers from any source I can find. The adapter is an Atheros AR9285. I've tried lenovo's online drivers, and have even bought Driver Manager and asked the support staff to find drivers that work for me. They said they found one that worked, but I tried installing it and it said that "This computer is not manufactured by Quanta Computers" and then didn't install it. I have them working on that right now. But seriously, if they don't find a solution, what could the problem be? And how do I get my network adapter working again?

Here is some additional important information:
-The harddrive they gave me came with windows 7 x64 home edition. I am using windows 7 x64 professional.
-The wireless network adapter works if I use the harddrive the computer came with
-I am a chemical engineering college student who needs internet to do his assignments, and this little netgear usb adapter my friend lent me isn't cutting it

Please help me. Let me know if you need any further information

Answer:Lenovo G780 replaced harddrive, network adapter drivers fail

Hello and welcome nitro Mate one thing I didn't see you mention is the Device Manager in Control Panel have you tried that yet? CP > Device manager > open it up like in pic right click the adaptor > it will ask you to look for updates - it may come back as the correct one or not. See pic first.

If not have a look at this thread Best Atheros AR 9285 Driver? - Tech Support Forum there maybe something in there.

Hi!
I just bought my first laptop, a Toshiba Satellite A-75-206(referbished) with WinXP. And, yes, I am waiting with baited breath for it to freeze up on me
A professional tech. set it up as part of a wireless router (D-link) network with another laptop and a desktop unit. I have not signed up with an ISP yet. I am leaning towards OneHop.com, not AOL. I plan to load Paintshop, Illustrator and a simple 3-d drafting program. Also all the Spybot,Ad-Aware, etc. that has been mentioned on this wonderful board!
Because I am a beginner, I am reading all the information that came with/on the computer. Now, my questions are.
1) should I make a copy of my hard drive at this point...in case I do something that freaks it out..or do I wait untill I load all the programs
2) how would I make a copy of my hard drive
3) how much of this preloaded stuff -Napster, AOL,MSN,etc. do I really need on my laptop
4) what other questions should I be asking
Thanks and any help you'all can give me will be sincerely appreciated.

Answer:Copy of XP on Harddrive?

System manufacturer and model?

Your owner's manual or the respective website of your system manufacturer...should contain the details for recovery/reinstallation of the system.

If such is on the hard drive, its intent is to return the system to the way it was when first purchased...installing all programs, O/S, etc.

If you have Nortons Ghost software, it will "Image" and copy the contents over as a fully working copy.

Otherwise visit the website of the new drive manufacturer. They usually have free software to copy over the contents, available to download.

Question: copy harddrive

My old 10 gig hard drive is getting a little full so I bought a 40 gig drive. I would like to make an exact copy of the 10 gig on the 40 gig. So far I've tried the utility provided by the harddrive company (Maxtor) and for some reason it doesn't recognize my file structure on my source disk so can't copy it. I then tried "clonemaxx" and "HDClone 2.0" and they both successfully copied the files and everything but they also copied the partition. So I'm stuck with an almost full partition instead of an almost full harddrive, this doesn't really help me much. I want the to copy the whole thing from the 10 gig partition to a 40 gig partition so I have the extra space. How can I do this?

Thanks.

Hi everyone

I tried to install SP1 last Thursday but I hit a problem right away I forgot what error code I got something to do with missing windows files so I followed the link to fix the error and downloaded (Windows6.1-KB947821-v10-x64.msu) 300mb file I ran this program then tried to install SP1 again. All seem to be going well it then asked me to put my copy of windows into the drive so I did then after about 15-20 mins the PC rebooted and the screen was blank/black but i could still hear the HDD was working it was like this for about 10 minutes then I got a message in the bottom right corner of the screen saying windows 7, build 7600, this copy of windows is not a genuine. YES IT IS!.
Could this be the cause of my problem.
About 5 months ago I had to replace the motherboard due to a failed component I didn't replace it with the same make I upgraded for a better board. When I turned the PC back on it asked for the windows 7 disc so in went the disc after a shot time (updating motherboard drivers) I had to activate windows again ok no problem I've still got a few more times that the disc can be used.

This will install an ActiveX app then will validate your copy of Windows 7. If that returns a files then you will need to contact Microsoft regarding the issue.

This stays that way until i start to copy files to anywhere from this drive. I start copying any big file or collection of files and windows starts by saying it needs about 3 minutes to finish. But after 1 minute the time starts going up to 45 minutes. If i then abort the copying and go back to hd tune, i check the transfer rate again and then it's 3.8MB/sec. This stays that way until i reboot.

I've tried several ways to solve this, all to no avail:

Off course, spyware and virus sweep: nothing
checked all cables :OK
checked defragmentation: OK
tried different connections on the Motherboard: nothing
used the devicemanager to remove the harddisks and let windows reinstall: nothing.
used the devicemanage to remove the sata controllers: nope
Tried to find another driver for the controllers:nope
Tried finding the same problem on google and forums: none found.
Tried finding any weird settings in the BIOS: seems ok

I also saw the same problem on my 250 gig drive (the WD). That would lead me to think it's not the drive itself that causes the problem. The 500gig drive is 2 months old.

Also, since the problem occurs some time into the copy operation, it kinda looks like a piec... Read more

Answer:Harddrive slowing down during copy

First, the Windows file copy estimate time is bollocks. Don't even look at it, ever.

The transfer speed dropping like that could be Windows switching the drive from DMA to PIO mode. This happens because of errors during data transfer, which can be caused by bad drivers, bad mobo, bad cable, bad drive..

I would start by going over all the SATA cables, making sure they are plugged in. Maybe swap the cable with the problematic drive and a good drive. Then run the manufacturer's diagnostics on the troublesome hard drive.

Had a friend ask this. He's got some concert DVD's (The Eagles, etc.) that he'd like to copy to his computer to watch. How would you go about doing this? Software?
I only know how to burn them.

Answer:Copy movie to harddrive...?

There are two ways to do this:

Either make a perfect bit-for-bit ISO of the disc and put that on the hard drive; VLC can play movies directly from ISOs, and doing so would be perfectly legit because you're not dealing with cracking the CSS encryption on retail DVDs. This is the recommended method, actually - at least by me.

The second involves software that I'm not going to name anymore and not even hint at because the name itself lends to the very process of cracking the encryption and that's something we're not supposed to discuss around here.

www.doom9.org or www.videohelp.com would be the two primary places online to get more info about doing what your friend wants done. Personally I'd just say use the first method above: he'd have a perfect copy (including the encryption which never gets cracked) on the drive, and VLC will treat that ISO as if it were the physical DVD in the optical drive with all the bells and whistles too.

Bought a new to me (used) HP TouchSmart tm2 laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium installed. However, after the first few uses upon start up I am getting messages telling me that hard drive failure is eminent. I did not get any back up or restore disks with the laptop so I would like to make an image or copy of the hard drive so I can install a new hard drive and copy the image on the new one.

What is the easiest, most economical way to go about this?

Thank you in advance and I apologize if this should be in another section!!

Immediately back up everything of value to a USB Flash Drive because your hard drive can crash at any second and recovery of info off of a crashed drive costs serious $.

Can you link us to this laptop? There are inexpensive ways to transfer/clone your hard drive.

hey, how,s it going, just have a quick question, how do i copy the entire contents from my harddrive to a cd. thanks alot.

Answer:how to copy information from harddrive to cd?

You should be able to use Windows Explorer to just drag and drop whatever files you want copied to the CD. I presume you're talking about data (documents, photos, etc.) since most executable programs copied this way wouldn't work if you tried to use the CD on another pc.

Equipment: HP Notebook G56-WM129 Operating system: Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium edition Issue: HDD Crashed, after 1 year and 1 month of use the hard drive up and quit working, the computer doesn't even recognize that it is installed.  Ran the test from BIOS and it confirmed that I have a dead drive.  Unplugged cleaned and repluged connection cable produced the same results. A dead Drive.  Now that we have determined that the drive is dead, inoperable, and unusable we'll move on to the part where my other issue lies. To replace the HDD I purchased a new 60Gb SSD. (More expensive than a HHD, but is supposed to be awesome on speed)  Went with the 60 Gig because it is costly and I didn't know at the time Windows 7 uses 25 Gb's of space (WOW). I never created any recovery disc, so I purchased a set from this website using my computers information.  I went ahead and decided to upgrade my ram at this time as well from 3 Gb/s to 8Gb/s.   All the stuff came in and I was excited to say the least.  New toys and all, just like Christmas.   I put the new SSD and RAM in, boot up the computer the BIOS recognized them both (Great).  I put in the 1st recover disk and proceeded to boot from it.  The program runs and wants me to reformat drive (enter no ends the program). So, I enter yes.  Reformatting goes quickly and moves on to the next phase of copying the files.  Then I ... Read more

Answer:Recovery Disk "Copy File Fail"

Usually replacing the hdd with one that is smaller than the original will cause Recovery to fail.A work-around that many use to replace with an SSD is to use Imaging software to make an Image of the hdd to restore to the SSD. The Imaging software must be one that has capabilty to shrink the image to a smaller hdd/partition. That is the one flaw in my favorite Imaging app,Macrium. I think Paragon Backup has the capabity to shrink, and possibly (not free) Acronis True Image. I have also used Disk Management in Windows 7 to shrink the C: partition before Imaging to allow it to be restored to a smaller hdd or partition. Any of these would require a working SATA hdd to install Win 7 on to do the Imaging. As for the alternate install of Windows 7, you can usually get it activated using your key and the phone activation method. Righty, I know a bit about how these things work so I went ahead and tried copying the pair of partitions related to my windows 7 operating system. A boot partition, and a System Reserved partition.
Went into Gparted and cleared/prepped the new SSD, then went and copy/pasted the entire partitions one by one, system reserved first, then the boot partition.

All went well, so I closed out of Gparted and booted the hard drive, however, it didn't make it past Bios. It went to a hardware info screen, like normal on boot, but right when it SHOULD have gone into a Windows 7 loading screen, it just sat there. Didn't look like it totally froze, the computer was functioning, it just didn't seem to know how to boot the drive any farther.

Where might I have gone wrong? Or would I be better off just re-installing 7 alltogether? (If I were to do that, I'd try dual booting again, but that frustrated me last time, never worked, and I found out I'd end up using windows most/all of the time anyway.

Answer:Solved: new SSD, copy boot partitions fail?

You actually need to clone the drive instead of copying partitions.
The copy process doesn't pickup the master boot record.
You should probably do a clean install with AHCI enabled in the bios.
That way AHCI will activate in windows and you should get full speed from the drive.

hi,

i am facing some problem copying movie files to my portable hard disk.

it said. 'cannot copy:the request could not be performed because of I/O device error' or something like that

the files were .avi .mpeg .wmv
i cn only move(cut) the file to my externalhdd

why is this happening to my computer?

Answer:Can't Copy File To External Harddrive

How large are the movie files? If they're over 4GB and the external drive is FAT32 file system, you will be unable to transfer the files to the drive, as that's beyond the maximum size for a file on FAT32. If this is the situation, unless you are happy to split the files, you'd need to change to NTFS as the file system on the external drive.

I am looking for a file copy program that will simply copy files without stopping to ask stupid questions or quitting in the middle of a job.

I use Windows Explorer now and drag and drop a bunch of folders from various computers to an external drive. Most of the time I am doing over 100,000 files and it takes 20minutes plus. The time is no problem because I just go off and do something else. The problem is when I come back after 20 minutes to see 5% done and a stupid question like ?xxx is a system file... are your sure you want to copy?. Why can?t I answer these questions up front rather than having to wait 5 minutes between questions?

What is worse is when it hits something like a long or invalid file name or my virus checker pops up to tell me that one of the files is adware. Explorer stops and tells me the problem but when I click OK the program simply stops leaving me with the problem with having to figure out what files it did and did not copy. Is there a program that will remember and continue where it left off?

Thanks

If i remember correctly DOS will allow you to copy all files from a directory without interruption m8

Hello everyone,so it all started when i tried to download Windows 8.1 yesterday. For some reason Windows could not update some updates required BEFORE 8.1 would become available in the Windows Store. One solution to fix this problem is to refresh windows. So I'm trying this only to find out that I need a recovery drive. Hence, I create one. However, the checkbox "copy recovery partition to hard drive" was disabled. I went ahead an created a recovery drive without a copy of the partition. When I then tried to refresh Windows, it tells me that the recovery media does not work. Long story short: I would like to copy my recovery partition to an external recovery drive. I applied the hotfix for the repartitioning of the harddrive when it came out. So now I am thinking that it might be an issue with the hotfix that windows is now unable to locate the recovery partition (which is still there). Maybe the issue is a different one.In either case, help is much appreciated!!

I have a computer with two physical drives, a 30G and a 160G. What I am attempting to do is to copy the Windows XP partition from the 30G drive to the 160G, make the 160G drive the bootdrive, then remove the 30G one. I am attempting to do this using Partition Magic 8.0 but so far I am having no luck. I copied the partition using Partition Magic, then swapped the drive letters of the two disks, made the new copy of the partition on the 160G HD Active, then rebooted and disabled the 30G drive in the BIOS. This did not work; the system hangs soon after the POST where it should begin showing the boot screen. I didn't really expect it do work, and I have since re-enabled the 30G in the BIOS and subsequently swapped the drive letters back to their original state. What I am wondering is, can you actually do what I am trying using Partition Magic 8? I only see the option to copy a partition. It makes no mention of creating a clone of an original drive so I am thinking that maybe i need a different piece of software to accomplish my goal? Thanks for any help in advance.

First of all, I want to point out that I have very little knowledge of technology.

I have a NTFS Seagate 2TB Go Flex Desk external hard disk drive. A couple months ago, I found that it had a problem where my laptop could detect it, but couldn't access it and needed to "reformat" it. I left it alone for a while.

Recently, I tried plugging it in again, and behold, it seemed to work okay and I could see all the files and so on. I tried chkdisk without the fixing part (/f). I didn't want to "fix" it until as last resort because it seems to imply some data will be lost. It said there were a lot of bad sectors.

I couldn't read some of the files (most of them were rar files) in my hard disk, and had "read error" and "data error (cyclic redundancy check)". So I basically moved all the files which were normal out of the disk as I couldn't move the others ("can't read from source file or disk") and now I'm left with the broken files, most of which are important. 40gb of 16,000 files.

Is there any hope for me to recover those files? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Edit: after this, how would I deal with the bad sectors?

Answer:Disk read error for files in the harddrive, want to recover files.

OK! The bad sectors are always one of the killers of data on a hard drive. Thatís why we are always asked to back up our needed data at least on two separate drives. So, in the future, you should learn to keep at least two copies of your important data on separate drives or locations.
But, right now, since your drive still could be read on your computer, you could try to run some data recovery programs to take chances. Nowadays, many data recovery programs are developed to help people resolve these troubles.

But, if you are not sure, you could firstly try some drive data recovery freeware such as Recuva, TestDisk and iCare Data Recovery Free, etc.
But, if any data recovery software could not make a difference, you could consult a data recovery expert for help and prepare enough money for it.

Good luck!

Currently running Vista 64bit SP2. When running other Windows such as XP & 7, I copy back my desktop icons and folders (excluding system folders & icons) to the new desktop when I've reformatted. My HDD is partioned as C & D, D being where I keep files and programs to copy back or run again. I create a new folder called Desktop "Something or Another" and I don't copy the Desktop Folder currently running, only its contents. Whilst I can open my Desktop Folder using Windows 7 64bit, when I try to do the same in Vista, it just won't open and reverts back to the desktop I'm currently using, albeit losing a lot a stuff on the desktop before it's fine again. Trying to open the folder in Safe Mode or with the anti-virus/firewall turned off makes no difference. How can I fix this please?

I am in the process of "moving into" a new HP Win7 desktop computer and out of a winXP Gateway desktop. I have two 1GB portable drives to use for this process. What is the best freeware to use to transfer the files without copying files I already moved so as to not generate a gazillion duplicate files?? Does that freeware have the ability to have a decision tree to asses whether a particular file is different than the one already there, and how it is different: content change, modified date, ??

Thanks for your help... JDD 20140505

Answer:Transferring data files from one harddrive to another without duplicating files

I would use a file synchronisation program for this, such as Microsoft's SyncToy or SyncBack Free. You set up profiles for syncing folders and set the criteria to be used in the decision making process when two files of the same name exist in both source and destination drives. I haven't used SyncToy in many years, but do know it works well, and use SynvBack Free all the time.

SyncBack Free - http://www.2brightsparks.com/freeware/freeware-hub.html

Hi guys let me explain a little about my set up first. I'm not really good at this so i'll try explain as best i can.

I have a TP Link ADSL router set up feeding 24 ADSL ports 8 on each of our 3 floor building. This router can only be accessed by an external IP, this router also has a line going to an internal wireless router, which i think handles domain filtering/DHCP etc.

I have four external IPs avaliable:

ADSL Router XX.XX.XX.9
Wireless Router XX.XX.XX.11 / 192.168.1.1
SBS Server XX.XX.XX.14 / 192.168.1.2

The problem i'm havin is that recently i've made some changs to the phone lines and not kept record of hat i've been changing only after my desired result (which i achieved) but somewhere along the line i've managed to make it so that we can no longer RDP to the router - which forwards to my Bosses PC (Doh).

Strange thing is i set up a VNC server on my bosses PC and put a port forward on the router - this works but the RDP ports don't and neither does the port 80 forwarding which i've got set up going to the SBS.

Any Suggestions / Or if you can see why from this explanation tell me i'm an idiot and set me on my way!

Cheers!

I've posted about this before, but I'll try again. This time with more detail.

I have remote desktop set up on my desktop, server, and laptop. All work 99.9999% of the time... that is until I have a heavy CPU intensive task running. I have no anti-virus running, and windows defender and firewall are turned off. This issue has happened to me over three installations with varying hardware and with various CPU intensive tasks, but I'll included my specs anyway:

Relevent PC specs:
Windows 7 Ultimate x64
Intel Core i7 920 @ 4.0GHz
6GB DDR3-1600 RAM (Corrsair)
ASUS Rampage II Extreme (up to date BIOS)
WD Velociraptor 300GB

note: the cpu intensive tasks do not require network access

Upon connection I'm able to select the User, but once the session attempts to start it either freezes on the windows login or the screen goes black and the RDP session times out.

I've found out that after the first time this happens I am locked out of my computer locally and over RDP (meaning that I can't log back in even when I'm sitting at my desk).

This issue seems to be independent of the computer accessing remote desktop. It will happen over another Win 7 RDP client, and in Win XP.

I've attempted to and successfully remotely terminate and restart the RDP service as well as terminate the CPU intensive task, but the issue remains the same. If I view the task list over the network, every process seems to run fine. No memory leaks or anything else suspiciou... Read more

Answer:Windows 7 Remote Desktop Fail

I have found issues like this to be resolved by updating or changing video drivers on the host computer-- sometimes even checking the client (computer you are connecting from).

Hi All,

When I have turned my Dell 5150 pc on, it boots up and loads to the black screen saying 'We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this' etc.

I have tried choosing every option to boot in safe mode, last known good configuration & start windows normally etc... but the pc restarts and then boots back to the same screen as mentioned above when I choose each option?

I have recently made a change to the software by installing the previous version of Windows Live Messenger. I had Live Essentials installed, but I did not agree with it, so I went back to Live Messenger 2010. Also, after installing the Messenger software and restarting the pc, it stuck on the login stage when selecting a user to log in with for around 15-20mins. So, I pressed the power down button on the front of the pc to turn the system off and start it up again, and this is when I first had the windows did not start successfully message.

Can anyone please help with this problem, as I havent backed up any of my data on the pc and i dont really want to spend out on a new pc if this one can be fixed?

Thanks very much for any help you can give, really appreciated!

Answer:netbook harddrive in a desktop

Do not try to boot from that hard drive. When you introduce a new hard drive in your system the BIOS assumes you want to make it the first boot device. Change that back to the drive that has been running Windows in your desktop. Then you should be able to see the files on the net book drive. You may need to take some action to access the files/folders. If that is the case look at the link below. If by chance, your desktop doesn't have any SATA drives installed other than the net book drive, you will need to install SATA controller drivers. Get those drivers from the manufacturer of your motherboard or computer. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421

Hello,

First time on this forum, so I hope I chose the right category to post my problem. I just got a new laptop, and it has Vista Home Premium.

My problem.. I use a program/application called "DVArchive" (aka: DVA) for archiving my tv shows on my PC (from my ReplayTV). This application worked just fine on XP, but of course, Vista is giving me all kinds of crap.

The application IS working.. It can see my ReplayTV unit, I can access my archived shows, etc. However, Vista is giving me error messages, which are interfering with it and making it crash.

The problem has to do specifically with the applications configuration (.XML) files. I'm pretty tech saavy, but I'm not a computer expert, so I'll just cut and paste the actual error messages below. The listed pathways are where DVArchive stores it's files...

Hi,I have an old, empty ATX case and a power supply with an on/off switch. The psu already has a sata power cable. If I buy a 3.5" internal sata harddrive, and maybe a $5 sata to usb cable (or sata to esata cable), can I basically use this old case as an external hard drive enclosure? Will other computers/laptops be able to recognize the hard drives as external harddrives if I just buy one of those cables? Also, would it be possible to place two HDDs in a RAID-1 configuration with the above setup (ie without a motherboard)? If so, what else would I need to buy? Thanks in advance.

Answer:Desktop case to External Harddrive

Ooof, yes I guess its 'dooable', but I'd have to question why you'd even want to? If you are going to the expense of buying a drive, either buy an external drive with USB connection or buy a drive and drive casing. Dragging a PC casing around that needs to be plugged in just so that you can connect it to other computers doesn't make sense. The RAID question needs an answer as to what you are trying to achieve. Are you thinking about using a RAID as a portable storage device? In a network? Or is this a science project? Either way, you'll probably end up spending way more than you really need to.

I have a Dell Inspiron 530 desktop with a Phoenix bios, 1.0.18, which does not seem to support placing a password on the harddrive (wdc wd5000aaks-75a7b0, driver 5.1.2535.0 7/1/2001) during setup. It only seems to have an option for a Supervisor pwd.

Is there any way to add a harddrive password to my desktop?

TIA

easy all

having a bit of trouble with my laptop - the power socket has failed so i'm unable to either charge the battery or run it from the mains. it's still under warranty so fixing it isn't a problem, but there's some data on the laptop's hard drive that i need to recover ASAP! if anyone can give me any help on how to do this quickly and easily i would be very grateful indeed, the attempts i've made so far have been unsuccessful.

we're using one of these:

http://www.span.com/catalog/product_...oducts_id=1055

with one of the pins bent out of the way to allow the connection to be made. the laptop is a fujitsu siemens amilo d series, not sure about the desktop as it's at my friends' house!

is there any way of doing this without messing around with IDE cables and whatnot? someone mentioned to me that there may be some kind of USB cradle device that i could plug the hard drive into then connect via USB.

hope this is in the right forum, i'm new round these parts!

cheers

james.

Answer:slaving a laptop harddrive to a desktop PC

Hi James

I've used one those adapters in the past serveral times (before USB 2.5in caddies became easily available!).

I know know about yours, but the ones I used to use never seemed to have pin 1 marked on one side so be careful connecting it up.

As far as connecting it to the desktop is concerned, I would advise you do the following :

Leave the desktops primary IDE channel alone (probably have just the main hard drive connected to it)

Disconnect any drives connected to the secondary controller - normally 1 or 2 CD or CDRW drives.

Connect the laptops hard drive to the secondary. This way you don't have to worry about configuring the drive to the correct master/slave setting. Make sure bios recognises it correctly.

Boot the desktop up in safe mode. This will allow you to transfer data from one drive to the other safely.

Don't understand though, what pin do you have to bend out of the way & why?

I deleted window.old and rebooted it would not start. I get past spinning wheel and the windows logo and then it goes black. I tried to reinstall and it doesn't even see my harddrive anymore. I'm seriously thinking of just buying a new HDD. Is there anyway to fix this?

Answer:windows.old crashed my harddrive on my desktop

Is there an error when installing, or just nothing? Do you have a USB or DVD listed as a boot device before the hard drive?

I needed help in setting up my computer for a GPS system. I have read that I need to set up the computer so it will copy all files & folders including hidden and system files.

How do I have Windows set to copy all files & folders including hidden & sys. files?

Can someone help me? I do not know how to set this up.

After a virus messing up my computer, the only solution to fixing it is to reinstall windows, however i have many files that i would like to copy to a CD so i don't lose them, the problem is that since the virus i can't copy or paste, i can't drag files, so i can't move them, and i can't use windows explorer or nero to burn files to a cd, as none of these work anymore. (reinstalling nero also didn't work)

Could anyone suggest a program or something that i could download so that i can burn my files to cd?

I've been using Teracopy since Win7 and when it encounters file conflicts, it gives you the option to overwrite older files automatically or with the press of a button. The Win 8 copy dialog allows you to compare files and skip those with the same date and size. There is copy and replace option but I do not see one to replace if file is newer or skip if file is older
1) Is there an option similar to the Overwrite older or do you just have to compare files individually?
2) When it says same "date" does it just mean the day or is the time accounted for as well for example if I had a file that was updated a few hours after the original, but on the same day, would it recognize that as a difference?

PS: Has anyone done a side-by-side comparison of Win 8 copy vs Teracopy?

Answer:Copy Files Conflict: Overwrite Older Files ala Teracopy

In Teracopy, when it detects one or more dupe files that are in the destination, a dialogue box will pop up giving you a choice to either copy over or rename and for a single instance or multiple instances. I usually tell it to "Skip All". It checks the files for Names and Sizes, and if a file is exactly the same in name and size and date, usually Teracopy skips it by default. This is because you can resume a huge copy process started in Teracopy if it gets interrupted: You can resume such a copy process by just dragging the whole folder over the half-copied destination, then Teracopy checks all the files and blanks out the ones that are already copied.

In the case of what you showed up in your pic, I think Teracopy may have skipped that file by default, only copying the ones that are not already there. But if it gives you a dialog box, just choose "Skip All". I'll have to check it's behaviour.

Teracopy is better for copying a folder with a bunch of sub folders from one drive to another. I use it to copy a Data Set that's about 500 GB in size: Working with a file set of that size, Teracopy is the best way to do it. If you want to not use Teracopy for local copying of a few files, right click on the folder to be copied and drag it over to the destination. then release the mouse and in the selection popup, choose "Copy" and not Teracopy. There will also be a "Move" and Teramove selection as well.

By default, Teracopy takes over the re... Read more

Can someone help me figure this out?
I cannot move or copy files, folders, or pictures when using the XP files & folders task manager LINKS on the left side of window. These links will no longer move or copy files to new locations. I just get instant hangup when I click these links provided in XP view. When I try to close the hungup window it shows that it is not responding. I find no alerts in control panel/administrative tools/event viewer.
PS
I am still able to copy/paste the files and also able to drag & drop. This is a slight inconvenience & hopefully fixable?

Ouch! Welcome to TenForums.

You don't need to install 7 again then upgrade it, you can go straight to a clean install of Windows 10.

When you upgraded from 7 to 10 a Digital Licence was recorded on Microsoft's activation servers linked to the hardware of your PC. The unique hardware ID for your PC does not include the hard drive, so you are free to change this for a new one. Provided you install the same edition, Home or Pro, as you had before this will activate automatically.

Download the install media from Microsoft using their Media Creation Tool. Run the MCT and take the 'make media for another PC' option. If you are doing this from the Acer use the 'defaults for this PC' setting, otherwise you'll need to select the architecture (32bit or 64bit) appropriate for the Acer. You can make an ISO file or a USB, my preference is to use the USB. Boot your PC from the USB and do a clean install, making sure you select Home or Pro to match what you had before. When asked for a key, skip this by clicking the 'I don't have one' option. As soon as the install has finished and Windows 10 can connect to the activation servers it should activate automatically.

My home network has 4 wired computers (all Win 7 Pro) which I access using Remote Desktop Connection when I'm going to be out of my office for extended periods. I have done this before, but it's been a while. The steps I take to get it running are:
1. Go to control panel - System - Remote Settings and click on the radio button to allow connections.
2. In windows firewall a create a rule for allow inbound connections on a port other than the default port
3. I change the RDP port in the registry to the same value set in 2.
4. I set up port forwarding rules in my dsl router to forward incoming connections to the correct ports.

I have verified that the above works connecting to one of the computers from outside my home network. Inside my home network I am able to connect using RDP to 3 or the four computers. For some reason one of them isn't working; I just never get a response from it. What else can it be?

Answer:Remote Desktop Fail Inside Home Network

That sounds like a lot of steps to get that working. You do that each time when you are going to be out of the office?

I would prefer to use something like TeamViewer to access my home computers while I'm out. TeamViewer is free and works very well.
